- 0:08SPEAKER_02: Hi everyone, I'm Dr.
- 0:10SPEAKER_02: Patty Ferris, Board Certified Dermatologist, and your host for this episode of the Science of Skin Podcast.
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: We are three and a half weeks away from the Science of Skin Summit.
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: So just as a reminder to everybody, we're in Austin, Texas again this year, and we'll be at the Fairmont Hotel, the beautiful Fairmont Hotel.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: It's been such a great venue for us.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: Our dates are September 17th through the 20th, and we've got a really expanded educational platform this year.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: And so my guests today are Dr.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: Dustin Portella.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: I probably don't need to introduce Dustin to anybody that's listening to this podcast, but he's a uh social media creator and educator supreme.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: And he's joined by Mimi Banks, who is the principal of Mimi Banks Social and has also been involved with the summit for a number of years.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: And we're really excited to talk to you all today about the umderm Influencer Track, as I like to call it, but also called Derm Fluencer University.
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: And this we started, Mimi, you've got to remind me, was it 2022 or 2023 we started this uh this initiative?
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: And we were we want to give a shout out to Evan, who's been our sponsor from the very beginning.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: But kind of take us back to that, Mimi, when we started this uh so many years ago and how big it has grown and how exciting uh our response has been to it.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was it's it's really great.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: It's we're in our third year coming.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: The first year we did a series of presentations, and people were so hungry for it.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: We decided to kick it off in the morning as the summit started.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: And do you remember, Patty, there was standing room only.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: We could not fit everybody in the room.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: It was so great.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: We had a great lineup of the top medical creators.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Dustin has been there since the beginning.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: We had your friend, our friend Mamina, Jenny, Lindsay, um, just the rock stars in the room.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: And now we've grown it to be two days, a three-hour masterclass plus a hands-on workshop.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: So we're super excited, really grateful to Even for creating this program, leading the program, and really being an ambassador and commitment to education, science-backed content, and combating skincare misinformation, which has really been the core and the mission of Derm Fluencer University.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: And Dustin, I know you can speak to that as the sort of sane voice in the room often, especially when things are getting crazy like they are now on social media with misinformation about sunscreens and skin cancer.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: And I mean, we could go on and on.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: But I think you would agree how important it is for the derms to be out in front of this.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the thing that I've been passionate about from the very beginning, even when I took heat from being one of the early dermatologists on TikTok, is I really believe as physicians, we need to be in those places where the conversations are happening.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: And there's so many places online where we can participate and steer the conversation to accurate information, which serves our patients, serves the consumers, and it helps to bolster the brands who are also partners with us in skin health.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: And so the more people that we can encourage and equip to do it effectively, the better outcomes for everybody.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 100%.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: And I think you spoke to it, Mimi.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: We were standing room only that first year.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: So it shows that there really is a need for education in creating meaningful content.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: And you two do such a great job at that.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: So let's speak to that a little bit for those who might be interested.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: So the the first day is really a masterclass, and it's understanding everything from looking at what your responsibility is as a Durham Fluencer, diving into content that works, understanding how partnerships um work, and also the unfiltered reality of what it means to be a creator.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: So it's more than just posting and what the reality is.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: And we're excited to have Marin Locke with us, who will be on the panel.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: Um so Nira Nathan also really going to share about that.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: So they're introducing that concept this year, and they're the first time joining us on stage.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: And we then have a second day with like practical tools.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: So you take the information you learned on day one, and now day two, you have a chance to really practice and learn from the best of the best.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: So Dustin leads a great workshop on camera presence.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: We have one, a new one on branding.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: We have using tools.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: So, how do you use that microphone or a light and also content creation, looking at hooks?
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: So everything that Lindsay taught on day one, building that into day two, creating and doing it in a way that's repeatable and scalable.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: So you walk out with a really repeatable framework.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: So it's not just three theory, it's things that you could put into action.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and that that was also super popular last year, that session.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: Dustin, I think one of the things a lot of derms out there are thinking is, you know, how do I get the time to do this?
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: You know, we're in clinic, we're busy, we're seeing so many patients, and you know, how how that how does the average board certified derm out there, you know, in their office really make time to create meaningful content?
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: Is it time consuming?
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: I guess is a question.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: It is very time consuming, but we really focus on this through our podcast, and we try to teach this at Derm Fluencer University and through Med Creator 101, is we we have the best and the brightest.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: We have the smartest people.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: And so learning how to do this is not a challenge.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: The challenge really is time because everybody's wearing a lot of different hats.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: And we really feel that we have come up with systems and formats to really remove as many barriers as possible for physician creators and creators in in other areas of health, our NPs, our PAs, our aestheticians, because we need them out there.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: And so if we can help to create systems for them, which is batching their content, improving the ease of editing that content, scripting it in ways that make it repeatable so you can find formats that are working for your audience and repeat those when you can sit down to batch, record.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: We really understand the obstacles to content creation.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: As a physician myself, a practice owner.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: I'm wearing all those same hats, uh, a father, a husband, and we feel that we're uh more well equipped than any Instagram guru out there to speak to the med fluencers and help them be as efficient as possible because it is doable and great things can happen as a result, whether that's from your own benefit and getting brand deals and creating extra income, which is not the most important thing, but really helping the consumer and improving the health of the people that we're talking to, bringing more people into the clinics that we have across the country.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: And also democratizing um information and education, so making it more accessible to the people who don't have dermatologists near them or who might have different challenges and now can learn from these experts.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: But I really want to I want to underscore what Dustin is sharing is that we really spend time, and this is what we talk about in the unfiltered reality section in the masterclass of how can you do it?
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: What do you do?
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: What are your hacks?
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: What are your tips?
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: Like Dustin said, batch recording.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: But batch recording, it's okay if you do it in one take and we give you tips how to do it in one take.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: It doesn't mean perfection.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: You don't have to be perfect.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: And as a physician, you're trained on perfection and diligence and doing it always right.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: And content is about getting started and getting it out there.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, keeping it real too.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: You know, not not too perfect because you want to be relatable, certainly.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: Talk a little bit about Med Creator.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: We mentioned it, Dustin, but I think many may not know what that is.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: This really came from a need that we saw when we attended the 2024 AAD in San Diego.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: As Mimi and I went around, I'd been getting questions from fellow physicians online for years.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: People would message me or text me or just pull me aside at a meeting and ask me all these questions of how do I get started?
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: How do I create better content?
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: And I spent hours on the phone and in conversation with dozens and dozens of other physicians.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: And Mimi saw that firsthand when she attended the AAD with me.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: And we sat down and decided there needs to be a better way to get this information to all the people that are asking it.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: And we started with a podcast of our own, the Med Creator 101 Podcast, to just have those conversations with creators that we're having one-on-one, because we know that social media is really to the masses, and we wanted to get our information to the masses.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: So we started with the podcast that gives pretty much gives away all the secrets that we have to share.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: And we know, again, because time is limited, some people may not be able to go through our entire backlog of podcast episodes.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: And that led to the creation of the Med Creator 101 course, where we really distill down the most actionable steps that a physician can take at their own pace to become masters in content creation to serve whatever their goals are with social media.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: And so, and the the course is actually there's eight modules, everything from legal and keeping your code of ethics and what you do with HIPAA to those content frameworks that we'll talk about at Dermfluencer University.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: So for the people who can't go to Dermfluencer University, if you want to check out MedCreator 101, and we also have a Substack.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: So if you're not a podcast person, you know, I'm not sure about a course, we have a weekly Substack that has more long form.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: It still has those tips, tricks, and hacks.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: We would love you to subscribe or just to share what your challenges are.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: So you two are not only committed to good medical information, but you're can uh committed to good creative information.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: And I love that because we do need creators and the creators need advice.
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: It's funny as you're talking, Dustin, about people calling you for advice on creating.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: People used to call me all the time, how do I learn about skincare, Patty?
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: Finally, I did the same like I surrender, and we started the meeting, which was the science of skincare, as you remember when we started.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: But it's so much easier to educate a group than it is to, you know, do these onesies, one-on-ones, I guess I should say, which were extremely time-consuming for me as well.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: Listen, uh, we appreciate you all being here with us.
- 10:31SPEAKER_02: We're so excited about Durin Fluencer University this year.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: Everybody who's coming to the meeting, it's kind of exciting.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: We've got new groups who have an NPPA track on Thursday.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: We also have our ever-famous and super popular aesthetician track.
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: And I love that these people will be exposed also to Durmfluencer University as well as the workshop.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: And I know you all put tons of time into this.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: We are most grateful, eternally grateful for you sharing your expertise and look forward to seeing both of you in Austin.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: We're excited to be a part of such an amazing meeting once again.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, super grateful.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for having us, Patty.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: Yes, and thanks again to Event for sponsoring, and we hope to see everybody in Austin.
