- 0:00And so in Matthew 21, which is the reason for
- 0:05Palm Sunday, arrangements were made. Jesus found
- 0:12a donkey. Verse 4, all this was done that it
- 0:15might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the prophet
- 0:19Joel. Tell the daughter of Zion, behold, your
- 0:23king is coming to you lowly and sitting on a
- 0:29donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey. And we
- 0:35know that then this happened. And as they came
- 0:40in, they waved the palm branches and they threw
- 0:44them down and they threw their cloaks as well
- 0:47on the ground. And they were preparing a way
- 0:51for this king that was coming. A few moments
- 0:56later, and I think this is perhaps the picture
- 1:00most people have of God. Jesus went into the
- 1:03temple and he flipped over the tables and he...
- 1:08he was reclaiming the temple as the house of
- 1:12the Lord. And we remember the moments that Jesus
- 1:18is tough and strong and him shaking his fist
- 1:23in the face of the Pharisees saying, you whitewashed
- 1:27tombs. How many of you remember all those moments
- 1:31of Jesus? And surely he is the soon -and -coming
- 1:36king. The second time he comes, he's not going
- 1:40to be riding on a donkey. He's going to be riding
- 1:42on a white stallion with fire in his eyes, the
- 1:46judge of the whole world. That is true. That
- 1:50is true. And we see his boldness. so many different
- 1:55situations. This week we'll be looking at the
- 1:58moments of the cross and Pontius Pilate, he looks
- 2:04at Pontius Pilate with all the calm and all the
- 2:07reserve and he says, you would have no authority
- 2:11over me if it were not granted you from above.
- 2:16And Jesus, can I just... side note that's not
- 2:20in my notes. Jesus is not insecure. Jesus is
- 2:27not insecure. If you have parts of your personality,
- 2:31and this is oftentimes compartmentalized in our
- 2:34lives, there's things that we are insecure about.
- 2:38You know, you hang out with Jesus, and you're
- 2:41going to get secure like he is. Amen? And that's
- 2:46good. Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. But here,
- 2:49Jesus does not come in a grand fashion. He comes
- 2:59lowly. In fact, some of your translations say
- 3:03gentle. Gentle. The Greek word is translated
- 3:09meek. Meek. And it's found, this exact word,
- 3:17although derivatives of it are more often in
- 3:20Scripture, the fruit of the Spirit, one of the
- 3:22fruits of the Spirit is gentleness, right? But
- 3:26this exact word, four times in the Scriptures,
- 3:29Matthew 5 .5, blessed are the meek, the gentle,
- 3:34for they shall inherit the earth. Matthew 11
- 3:37.29, take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
- 3:41for I am gentle. Gentle. 1 Peter 3, 3 and 4.
- 3:48Speaking of women's attire, do not let your adornment
- 3:55be merely outward, arranging of the hair, wearing
- 3:59of the gold, or putting on fine apparel, but
- 4:01let it be the hidden person of the heart with
- 4:04the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and a quiet.
- 4:10So those three times and then also this one.
- 4:14Behold, your king comes gentle riding on a donkey.
- 4:20Gentleness, a quality that Jesus embodies. And
- 4:26I believe wants us to embody as well the spirit
- 4:32of gentleness. Jesus got this. DNA of gentleness
- 4:42from his father. Gentleness is a quality that
- 4:52the father has. It was this quality that David
- 4:59often wrote about. One of the, probably the most
- 5:04famous psalm in all of the Bible. Shepherd. And
- 5:11David understood the fierceness that a shepherd
- 5:14had to have towards the enemies of the sheep.
- 5:18But David understood the gentleness that the
- 5:24shepherd had to give to the sheep. He was gentle
- 5:29with them and he knew the Lord as somebody that
- 5:33was my shepherd that was gentle with me. Gentleness.
- 5:39The Lord is my shepherd. Psalm 1835 says, you
- 5:44have given me the shield of your salvation. Your
- 5:49right hand has held me up. Your gentleness has
- 5:54made me great. David wrote that. Let's all just
- 5:59say that together. Your gentleness has made me
- 6:04great. I love that. That's a powerful, promise.
- 6:10The gentle father. The gentle father. Can you
- 6:14imagine with as much power as God has if he did
- 6:19not also have gentleness? If he did not somehow
- 6:24was able to contain all of that power and kind
- 6:28of just hold it back, hold it back, hold it back
- 6:32so that he could relate with you and me. Can
- 6:37you imagine if every time we related with the
- 6:40Father, if He unleashed all of His power upon
- 6:45us? We would not be able to take it. There's
- 6:49nobody that can stand in His presence except
- 6:52that He's gentle. God is a gentle God. Isaiah
- 7:01prophesies of the gentleness of God. He will
- 7:07feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather
- 7:11the lambs with his arm and carry them in his
- 7:14bosom and gently lead those who are with young.
- 7:21Hallelujah. Praise the Lord. Some verses that
- 7:26remind me of God's gentleness. 2 Peter 3 .9 The
- 7:32Lord is not slack concerning his promise. as
- 7:36some count slackness, but as long -suffering.
- 7:40That's a quality that goes with gentleness. Patience.
- 7:46Long -suffering. Not willing that any should
- 7:50perish, but that all should come to repentance.
- 7:57Ezekiel 33, 11 says this. Say to them, as I live,
- 8:01says the Lord, says the Lord God, I have no pleasure.
- 8:05in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked
- 8:08turn from their wicked ways and live. Wow. Turn.
- 8:15Turn from your evil ways. And so his gentleness
- 8:21calls them to repentance. Jesus tells a parable
- 8:29that speaks of the gentleness of the Father.
- 8:33If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them
- 8:35goes astray, does he not leave the 99 and go
- 8:39to the mountains to seek the one that is straying?
- 8:43And if he should find it, assuredly I say to
- 8:47you, he rejoices more over that sheep than the
- 8:5299 that did not go astray. Even so, it is the
- 8:57will of your Father who is in heaven that...
- 9:00that not one of these little ones should perish.
- 9:06Amen? Now when you have gone astray, aren't you
- 9:11glad that the Father did not respond with harshness?
- 9:16Think about your own life. Think about when you
- 9:20went astray. The two of you in here that went
- 9:25astray. You know who you are. No, we all have
- 9:34a tendency to wander, don't we? Even as believers,
- 9:40hopefully in lesser and lesser ways, the longer
- 9:45we live for the Lord, hopefully we start learning
- 9:48a thing or two, right? But we still have a tendency
- 9:52to wander. Sometimes we don't like the path that
- 9:58God has placed us on. And so how many of you
- 10:01have tried to cut your own path? You've tried
- 10:06to make things happen and force them down a certain
- 10:11road and make them happen. It does not work.
- 10:16And do you know what leads us back to repentance?
- 10:19What the New Testament says? The New Testament
- 10:22doesn't use the word gentle. The New Testament
- 10:26uses the word kindness. It is your kindness,
- 10:30Lord, that leads us to repentance. And because
- 10:36Jesus is gentle with you, he leads you back from
- 10:42your place of straying. Praise the Lord. Praise
- 10:46the Lord. His gentleness. Glory to God. Glory
- 10:52to God. The Father is in this room right now.
- 10:59And He is gentle. And I want to speak just for
- 11:04a moment to the fathers in the room. Fathers
- 11:10in the room. It is important. That amidst all
- 11:15of the other responsibilities that we have as
- 11:18fathers, that we reflect our heavenly Father.
- 11:23And that this quality of gentleness be something
- 11:27that our children experience. Amen? Let me read
- 11:32a couple verses to fathers. And you fathers,
- 11:36do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring
- 11:42them up. In the training and the admonition of
- 11:46the Lord. Can you feel the gentleness, the gentle
- 11:50heart of the Father in that instruction? Do not
- 11:55provoke your children to wrath. Now, I have been
- 11:59known to be provoking. I must confess. I must
- 12:09confess. Are there any other provokers out there?
- 12:15Yeah, we got some honesty going on now. Now,
- 12:19the Bible doesn't say don't ever provoke them.
- 12:24But you gotta know when to stop. Don't provoke
- 12:28them to wrath. I believe in the fun of a family,
- 12:33amen? But do not provoke them to wrath. Gentleness,
- 12:40bring them up. In the training and the admonition
- 12:45of the Lord. Here's another one. Fathers says
- 12:48it twice. Paul said it to the Ephesians. That
- 12:51first verse was Ephesians 6 .4. He says it again
- 12:54to the church of Colossians 3 .21. Fathers, do
- 13:01not provoke your children. Lest they become discouraged.
- 13:09And so. we have to be careful even in correction.
- 13:14Amen? Correction can lead to discouragement if
- 13:20it's not coupled with gentleness and encouragement.
- 13:25Amen? Reflect the heart of gentleness. Thank
- 13:32you, Lord. Your fellowship with the Holy Spirit
- 13:37will make you gentle. Your fellowship with the
- 13:42Holy Spirit will make you gentle. It is true
- 13:48that the company that you keep is who you become
- 13:54like. That's why we've got to be careful who
- 13:58we're friends with, right? Friendship with the
- 14:01world is enmity with God. But friendship with
- 14:06God is life forevermore. And when you hang out,
- 14:10when you fellowship, when you regularly are connecting
- 14:14with the Holy Spirit, gentleness becomes a quality
- 14:18that grows in you. I already said that it was
- 14:21a fruit of the Spirit. Let me read it to you.
- 14:23Galatians 5 .22. The fruit of the Spirit is love,
- 14:27joy, peace, long -suffering, kindness, goodness,
- 14:30faithfulness, gentleness, self -control. Self
- 14:37-control. Against such things, there is no law.
- 14:40I believe that we as Christians should become
- 14:44more and more gentle the longer that we walk
- 14:50with Jesus. Praise God. Praise God. Gentleness
- 14:57affects how we treat each other. Have you ever
- 15:02seen somebody that you know is going the wrong
- 15:05direction? Yeah. People in your life that have
- 15:12gone the wrong direction. Paul says that when
- 15:18we see people go the wrong direction, we have
- 15:21a responsibility to go after them. Well, I don't
- 15:28want to do that, Pastor. I'm a peacemaker. It
- 15:34will cause ruffles. No, it will express your
- 15:40love for them and your desire to see them in
- 15:45heaven and your desire to not see the enemy snatch
- 15:48away what God has placed in their life. You have
- 15:54a responsibility to go after them. Listen to
- 15:59what Paul told the Galatian church. Brethren,
- 16:03If a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who
- 16:08are spiritual, now this is not equivalent with
- 16:12arrogance, please. We are not saying we are better
- 16:16than you. You who are spiritual, restore such
- 16:21a one in a spirit of gentleness. Considering
- 16:28yourself, lest you also be tempted. That means
- 16:33we can't come with pride. We can't come with
- 16:36arrogance. In fact, you need to spend a moment
- 16:38in prayer and you need to say, God, before I
- 16:41go and talk to my brother and sister, clothe
- 16:44me with gentleness. Make me more like you, Jesus.
- 16:52Make me more like you. Gentleness is a part of
- 16:56who we are. What does the gentleness of Christ
- 17:00mean? The gentleness of Christ means that when
- 17:07you are at your lowest, Jesus will not crush
- 17:12you. Hallelujah. That's good news, friends. When
- 17:18you are at your lowest, Jesus will not crush
- 17:21you. Matthew 12, 9 says this, Jesus will not
- 17:26quarrel nor cry out. nor will anyone hear his
- 17:31voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will
- 17:36not break, and a smoking flax he will not quench.
- 17:43So if you are a bruised reed or a smoking flax,
- 17:48if that's the season of life that you are in
- 17:51right now, that's the way that you feel about
- 17:54your life. I'm just bruised and a smoldering
- 17:59wick that's not even producing any flame. It's
- 18:03just smoldering and smoking and making the room
- 18:07smell foul. That's the way my life feels right
- 18:12now. Jesus will not break you. And Jesus will
- 18:17not snuff you out. But rather, He comes alongside
- 18:23of you until you receive justice, until He brings
- 18:29you forth to victory in Jesus' name. He wants
- 18:35you on the team, even though you're hurting.
- 18:41The gentleness of God means that when you are
- 18:45at your lowest, Jesus will not crush you. You
- 18:50can turn to him. Secondly, it means the gentleness
- 18:57of God means that God is knowable. Isaiah 55
- 19:06says of the Lord, for my thoughts are not your
- 19:11thoughts. Nor are your ways my ways, says the
- 19:15Lord, for as the heavens are higher than the
- 19:17earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and
- 19:21my thoughts than your thoughts. Imagine if God
- 19:28stayed in that place, never revealed anything
- 19:32to us. What if he never gave us any revelation
- 19:37about who he is? What if he never taught us?
- 19:44But because he's gentle, God is knowable. He
- 19:50makes it so that you and I can have relationship
- 19:54with him. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Glory to God.
- 20:02He lowers himself. And Jesus did this. He humbled
- 20:09himself. Philippians says he did not consider
- 20:11equality with God something to be grasped, but
- 20:15he humbled himself, made himself nothing, became
- 20:19obedient even unto death. Why? So that you and
- 20:25I could know him. Amen? God's gentleness means
- 20:30that he is knowable. And finally this morning,
- 20:36some of you cannot believe that I'm already to
- 20:38my last point. And it's not even 1130. Oh, hallelujah.
- 20:46Finally, the gentleness of God makes him approachable.
- 20:53Makes him approachable. Hallelujah. Hebrews says
- 20:58that we should come before him with boldness.
- 21:03Come into his throne room with boldness that
- 21:05we might find help in our time of need. And it
- 21:11is Jesus. You remember when the disciples were
- 21:15telling the kids, get out of here, don't bother
- 21:17the teacher. And what did the gentleness of Christ
- 21:21compel him to do? Let the children come to me.
- 21:26Let them come to me. I know I'm a rabbi. I know
- 21:30this isn't normal for rabbis. But I want the
- 21:34kids to come around me. I want to touch them.
- 21:37I want to bless them. And the kids had no qualms
- 21:41at all about approaching the King of Kings and
- 21:45the Lord of Lords because He was approachable
- 21:49by everybody. You think that Jesus is only knowable
- 21:55and only approachable by the religious people.
- 21:58It is not the truth. He's humble. And he invites
- 22:04you to come. And I read, I quoted a part from
- 22:07Matthew 11, but I want to read verse 29. I want
- 22:12to read it to us. I'll back up. Come to me, verse
- 22:1728. All who labor. and are heavy laden, and I
- 22:25will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and
- 22:30learn from me. There he is, knowable, knowable.
- 22:36Learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart,
- 22:42and you will find rest for your souls. For my
- 22:50yoke is easy and my burden is light. I want to
- 22:57just take a moment this morning and I want to
- 23:01thank God for his gentleness. I want to thank
- 23:07God for his humility. I want to thank God for
- 23:17his patience. I want to thank God for this soft
- 23:23side that He has that makes it so that we can
- 23:29come to Him. When I was an assistant pastor in
- 23:35Galesburg, I got it over and over and over again
- 23:38from our young people. They were afraid of me.
- 23:43I kind of liked it. I don't know. But I realized,
- 23:50They don't want to come and talk to me because
- 23:52they're afraid of me. And I don't know if it
- 23:55was the position or what or the way I carried
- 23:58myself then. I don't know what it was, but they
- 24:02had this fear. I wasn't very approachable. I
- 24:09don't want to be like that. And I remember not
- 24:11just one of them, many of them were like, I don't
- 24:19want to be like that. I hope that you don't want
- 24:22to be like that. Jesus is not like that. Now
- 24:29there are times when he reveals himself that
- 24:31all we can do is tremble and fall down at his
- 24:35feet as though dead. In all of his glory and
- 24:39splendor. But there are so many times when he
- 24:44just says, come to me. I am meek. And I am lowly.
- 24:55And you can come. You can come. So Jesus, we
- 25:03thank you this morning, even as we just pause
- 25:07here for a moment here in your presence. And
- 25:11we just recognize your humility. We recognize
- 25:16your compassion. We recognize your gentleness.
- 25:22And we ask God that you would do two things this
- 25:27morning. One, that you would help us to experience
- 25:29your gentleness. You would help us to experience
- 25:34who you are, more of who you are. You are gentle.
- 25:41God, when we are like a bruised reed, When we
- 25:47don't understand what is happening in our lives
- 25:50and we respond in a way that draws back, I thank
- 25:55You that You do not draw away from us. You do
- 25:58not cut us off. You do not say, I don't want
- 26:02You. Lord, even when we fail, even when we sin,
- 26:07You don't turn away. We become like that one
- 26:10wandering sheep that has gone astray. But Lord,
- 26:15it is your gentleness that comes after us. It
- 26:19is your kindness that leads us to conviction
- 26:22and repentance. And we turn back. And so Lord,
- 26:29I pray that your gentleness will just hover over.
- 26:31Lord, it's the secret place that Pastor Cammie
- 26:35has been talking about through this whole season.
- 26:37It is the secret place we find refuge under your
- 26:41wing. It is a place of gentleness. God, I pray
- 26:50that somebody, even just one in here, will experience
- 26:54the gentleness of Christ. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
- 27:00Would you come and play He Loves How He Loves?
- 27:03Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Lord. We thank you
- 27:09for your gentleness. We thank you for your touch
- 27:13in this room right now. We look to you, Jesus.
- 27:23God, the second thing I want to pray is that
- 27:27you would just keep working on me. Keep working
- 27:34on us. God, I just, in preparing this message
- 27:38and in preaching this message, see so many rough
- 27:41edges in me. And I want to clothe myself in gentleness,
- 27:46and I want to clothe myself in humility. God,
- 27:52I want to be like you. I want to be like you
- 27:57to the people around me, to my family. I want
- 28:05to be like you. Jesus, transform my life. Transform
- 28:17my life. Make me like Jesus. God, I just freely
- 28:30confess my need. I just sense repentance just
- 28:37happening around the room right now. Sometimes
- 28:41we don't like what we see when we look at our
- 28:44own personalities and our own lives. God, we
- 28:49just come before you and we lay our lives on
- 28:53the altar. We say, God, have your way. Make me
- 29:03like Jesus. Make me like Jesus.
