- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Delving Deeper with Holiander Hawthorne and Delphina Lendra.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: That was very unsmooth.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Very unsmooth.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Very unsmooth.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: But that's us.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Delving Deeper is our metagame discussions for our um campaign where we talk about anything in the sessions, uh, our characters, their thoughts, their feelings, their suspicions, or generally ask each other what the hells were you thinking?
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: So today we are talking about fantastical beasts and where to avoid them.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: And we are talking about all the fantastical beasts we ran into in the Dwarven Mines.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Yes, we're a lot of episodes.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: And there was a fight every session.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: There was a combat with some sort of a monster or other.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: So we ran into a lot down there.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: So I have a cat trying to get my attention down here.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: What beasts did we find?
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: We had the rigomerols.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: The remoris.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: We Ramoi Remoris?
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: Like eels?
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Is that what they're actually?
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: No, they were like, that's that's kind of re moraz.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: There's like an H in there.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Don't come at us for pronunciation.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Rigamar.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Giant centipede things.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: And then we had rovers.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: And we we had a mimic.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: We had a mimic.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we had a couple mimics.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: We had Yetis and we had some beholders, which are not our friends.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: And we had um statues with those cottage dog spell monsters.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: But they're still, I feel like they fall under fantastical beasts.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Anyways.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: They do.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: And then in the end, we did encounter a dragon, which will leave to a whole extra thing.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: A whole other fight.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: All another discussion with that dragon.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: So in these dwarven mines, this was this was super cool because it was really, it's it's not just, I mean, I don't know what mines are really supposed to look like.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Are they a giant maze inside all the time?
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Because that's what ours was, and it was pretty great.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Well, he had said before we go in there that it is sort of like enchanted and some corridors could move and change.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: And clearly every s inch of this place was infected with um the corrupted ink.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: And the doors themselves had not been able to successfully go into the mines in a very long time.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Um, or at least if they did, they did not come out, which is why they needed somebody else to come in and save their dragon.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: And I mean, did they always have all these beasties in there, or did they just kind of make their way out?
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: I think the Remoras, um, they, the Remaraz, however you say that, Rigamaroles.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: It was stated that that's sort of a natural habitat for them.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: They were always kind of this was something the dwarves probably dealt with on a regular basis.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: The Yetis, well, it's because they live up north, so maybe the Yetis got in there from another outside source because they were coming from a cave below.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: There was that implication that they actually came from outside from a hole behind the city.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: And they made a lair kind of underneath it all.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: The beholders.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Beholders come from where wherever the fuck beholders want to come from, basically.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Beholders go wherever the fuck they want to go.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're um, they are no longer my friend.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: I thought that they were interesting and um they No, okay.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Well, in the essence that I thought that they were.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Well, they're they're literally balls of death.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: I, yeah, you're right, they are.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: But balls of death was not a deterrent for Oleander uh originally.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Oh, they're a deterrent now.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: They really, really are now.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: I think the ones that most, aside from the beholders, the ones that were most like causing stress was the remoraz, because they we could hear them in the walls chittering and following us, and we'd go up one hallway and we'd hear them up there, and then we turn around from that because we got scared and we'd find like their lair, and then there they like lit we realized they were following us, hid in a storeroom, and literally that was the episode they came from came from the walls.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was they all descended.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: It was fun because they would just kind of taunt and follow, and you just you knew that there was no way of avoiding them because we kept trying to go to different areas thinking that you know it'll be fine, we'll just we'll go over there, they'll stay there.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Uh they would not, and didn't so then we had to prepare ourselves because we knew that there was just no avoiding an encounter with them.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Well, and didn't Draken think that because Delphine's um knowledge check was, you know, these are creatures that naturally live here, and he's like, oh maybe they'll just not bother us.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: They're still predators.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm pretty sure.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: They're still probably hunting us.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: There was a few minutes.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: There's not a lot of living things here.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Um we're probably gonna have to deal with them at some point.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: So that was that was me.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: I didn't turn off my my notifications, so now I'm on mute.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: We are dressed pretty because um our ladies Chris Astra DD game are going out for a ladies' night tonight.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: So drinks and bowling in fancy get ups.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then we're going to a literal speakeasy after that, and it's really fun.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: It's great.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Uh take your DD group out for a night out of non-D, but still creative fun.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: This is your this is your sign to do.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: We play this game online, um, and only four of the five of us live within the vicinity of the city.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: The one who's come has driven from seven to eight hours away to come visit us for the weekend, and we're going out.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: We are just under the assumption that almost everybody has multiple games going on.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: I think a lot of people would love to have multiple games going on.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Ideally, you've got multiple games going on, and you can take all of your characters and get really, really into every single one of them individually.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: So Fantastical Beasts and where to avoid them.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Um, I know that some people may want to find them.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Maybe you are doing some sort of, you know, study and you want to learn all about these fantastical beasts.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Maybe you're a monster hunter.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, maybe you're just an academic.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: But when you're just jumpy, I might avoid them.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: My character's an academic.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: No, I think that the academics should maybe avoid these monsters because we got our asses kicked and handed to us many, many times.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Over and over again.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: And it was only by the good graces of our DM that we were allowed a long rest when I was pretty sure we would not get any long rest, but we were we got our asses kicked after the Ramores.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Two of us got swallowed.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah! Oh yeah! Drax got swallowed.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then we're gonna be able to get the Draken got like not unconscious swallowed.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Drax switched places with his echo, who was outside.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: And yeah, two of us got fully swallowed swallowed when we finally did fight them.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, that was not a good thing.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: How did how did Druken get out?
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: I can't remember.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: I hit it with chain lightning that did enough damage that caused it to him.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I remember thinking that Binar swooped in and like grabbed his body and shoved a health potion down his broke.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Because you know, like shit's gone wrong when your cleric is down, and you're just left with like your backup healer, and then that's all the stress.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Um, and I was actively trying to hide, I think, behind Roll.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: This is like the only time Rold actually actively protected her, and she still had a rampers in there.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: We're all like, oh, look at Roll.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: There's it.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, I don't think he's actually trying to help.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I think he was doing everything he could to protect me because I was doing some concentration spell that was necessary.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: I don't remember.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: I can't remember what I was doing.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: I was doing some hypnotic patterns.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: You do that.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes, I think that was because one in the ceiling, one from the floor, a couple from the walls, and they all had the ink leechlings with them.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: So it wasn't just them.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: I just remember doing something, and Rold actually actively trying to protect me, which seemed so out of character.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: It was very out of character.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Um he'll he's gonna be like, What do you mean out of character?
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he'll say, I always protect that with that.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Well, have you been paying attention?
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: But it was an interesting moment, and uh, so I can't say that Roll has never uh done something for me.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then like outside from them, we had the beholders, which obviously went spoiler alert, kind of really bad for at least someone here.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I may have died.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: May have super bad.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, super bad.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: And then like we all fought over her dust.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: But but yeah, there was at least one more beholder than we thought in that room.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: We were all like, yeah, we're ready, we're gonna do this.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: It just they were the last monsters that we had to see.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: It appeared that we were doing way too well.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: That was our last fight.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Don't get cocky, never get cocky.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Just because you guys are going in and getting hits and taking things down when you've got three beholders and one of them just drops super, super fast, and then the second one is like half dead.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: You uh don't assume that that means you're winning.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: It just takes one or three really bad saving throws for things to do horribly wrong.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: And it didn't help that they were doing not only were we dealing with the magical suppression barrier that was- Yeah, so we couldn't do shit.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: They they had the most part.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: The fun thing though, the fun thing about these ones, fun for me, is that the the beholder's central eye has the anti-magic cone.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: Well, the anti-magic cone of the beholder's eye was actually negating the anti-magic barrier in the room.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: So if the beholder was looking at you, you could actually cast your spells normally, which was very misleading.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: It was the trap that got someone to forget to take cover.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: I I ran right in there because I'm like, yay, I can cast.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: And then I was right in front of the beholder and could not cast.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Now you fed me that fight too, right?
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: I did.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: That was the one and only time that Delphine.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: I didn't let you feed off me.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: I dripped it into a vial.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Semantics.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Delphine won't let doesn't trust Ventor.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Especially at that point, Ventor was free.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: You just didn't want me to lick you.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: No, because that's weird.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: That's weird and gross.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: And Delphine.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: And she has to deal with it in person, anyways.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: She licked me once when I was covered in bugs spray, sweat, and sunscreen, and the instant regret.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: We've got photographic evidence of like the stages of it.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: The regret as I tasted the I like that we're gonna give this to you completely out of context, too.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna explain why I was covered in sweat, sunscreen, and bugs spray, and she was licking me.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Because it's more fun that way.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: It's yeah, it is always more fun without context.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: So I want to know what battles you guys have had.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: What fantastical beasts have you guys managed to avoid or not avoid?
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: How have you guys fought them?
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: What is the most epic or interesting battle that you guys have come across or casually avoided by creative means?
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we've avoided in a different game a fight entirely by playing charades.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: That was freaking hilarious.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: That was a good time.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: That was a really good one.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: That was a good time.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: I didn't know it was supposed to be a fight.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: We were just talking about these.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Uh, you guys were about to get your ass handed to you.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: I know, but then we made friends.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you did make friends.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: That's why you play with ladies.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Um have you guys made friends with any of the fantastical beasts?
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: Or tamed a monster.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: If you guys have tamed a monster, I want to hear about it because that's amazing.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: Should we love that?
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: Anyways, uh, if you have any questions for us, then drop them in the context.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: Yes, but I do want to hear about your guys' fantastical beast battles.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: And thank you very much for joining Oleander Hawthorne and Delphine Alandra for delving deeper, and we will see you soon.
