- 0:45Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast.
- 0:49I'm Curtis Wilson, I'm Brian Siegel buddy, we are a only
- 0:53Monday afternoon only perfect fall Monday afternoon.
- 1:00I stepped outside is like 66 degrees a little breeze.
- 1:04The leaves are turning its fall, whether it's perfect.
- 1:08This is what we live for. This is what we live.
- 1:11Oh, it's so true. It this week's going to be like
- 1:13great and I think the next few weeks are going to be great.
- 1:15Like that little delayed this week guys, with Halloween Brown
- 1:21was out of town and I really didn't get kind of settled down
- 1:26until about 9:15 last night. So We made a call like yeah,
- 1:32we're not gonna be able to do this on Halloween night.
- 1:35Yeah shout out my wife who said y'all sure y'all can pull this
- 1:39off on Halloween night like yeah, we got it.
- 1:43She's been good. We don't got it.
- 1:46All worked out, gave us a little time to review the Georgia Tech
- 1:51game again and how was trick-or-treating Brian
- 1:55approximately. How many pounds did your your
- 1:58kiddo bring home? Probably a good two to three,
- 2:02man. I didn't I didn't put the scale
- 2:03on it but he made a good. We had a good lap around my
- 2:07in-laws neighborhood. They had a lot of fire pits out
- 2:14last night so that a lot of people sitting out in the
- 2:16driveway with the fire pits. Just watching the kids run
- 2:19around. It was a good time.
- 2:21It was a good time and we did not we knocked it out in about
- 2:23an hour and then we headed on home.
- 2:26Bye. You guys.
- 2:27Very nice. I would say somewhere between
- 2:29five and six Did a little something here at the house with
- 2:33the neighbors and walked around the neighborhood to a point.
- 2:36And I told Brian, we were getting down this bigger Street
- 2:39in our neighborhood, and we hit like four houses consecutive.
- 2:42There were like no candy. We're out.
- 2:45We're out. So clearly, what covid did was
- 2:48throw people into thinking, they could buy one bag of candy in a
- 2:53big neighborhood. Nope, so definite failure there,
- 2:58but we've got enough candy. D2 easily last us until next
- 3:02Halloween which is always the goal putting the candy bin.
- 3:05And yeah is that other courts still doing like kind of like
- 3:10the pre trick-or-treat stuff anymore or is that they didn't
- 3:14this year whenever they're looking for the corn maze, they
- 3:17did not have it this year but you know, it's a change in
- 3:21Dynamic. You came over a few years ago
- 3:24and it was their kids were a little younger and now their
- 3:27kids are getting a little older. So, It's an ever-changing
- 3:32Dynamic, but we had a great time with our folks and had some
- 3:36pizza and some drinks and then all went out together, strong,
- 3:40that about 100 100 yards long from one end to the other.
- 3:44There you go. All right.
- 3:45Well, Brian we snap the streak, buddy.
- 3:50We did, dude. Hokies that one won.
- 3:54We won. We won 11.
- 3:57Brown was right about Georgia Tech.
- 4:00Again, Brian is now like, two for two on Georgia Tech calls in
- 4:05the last. Here we go, here we go.
- 4:07Um, but yeah 26:17 when I was getting out of getting out of a
- 4:13little baseball as the game was ending and had people like, oh,
- 4:17not and I looked at it, nine-point lie about three
- 4:20minutes left, and you just kind of look like again, seriously,
- 4:25it's going to happen again, but it didn't the Guys held on 4 and
- 4:324. Now you know 2 and 2 2 and 2 in
- 4:37the ACC get to into in the ACC Coastal not completely, the ACC
- 4:43Championship game, which is going to be whoever's in there.
- 4:47It's going to be a show, let's just sit, this is going to be
- 4:51the weirdest year overall man because especially when they
- 4:55like Atlantic. It's not looking great.
- 4:57Other than Wake Forest Lake Forest has had a couple.
- 5:00Cares even in there and you know, obviously Clemson it in,
- 5:06who we thought they'd be this year.
- 5:08They're not. You look at you.
- 5:09Look at the coastal. You know, you got UNC who
- 5:14definitely isn't who we thought they were.
- 5:16Oh no, you got Miami starting to Surge a little bit after kind of
- 5:21falling behind. Yeah.
- 5:23And then you got pit finally taking a loss in the in the
- 5:27coastal there. You know, what can they do?
- 5:30Due to right? The ship to make sure they keep
- 5:32the advantage, they have. Oh yeah, it's going to be the
- 5:35next month and that's where we're sitting at.
- 5:37We're sitting at one month away from, you know, essentially the
- 5:42end of the regular season it's going to be wild.
- 5:44Again, this it's more and more looking like 2007, another top
- 5:4810 team goes down, who was in the running for the Big 10 in
- 5:51Iowa. Not only did they go down, they
- 5:53got absolutely white by Wisconsin.
- 5:56Yeah, drug. That's Wisconsin's looked all
- 5:58year. It is.
- 5:59So it's like this. Get it's every week, it happens.
- 6:02It's a little more 2007, so can't I can't wait to see the
- 6:07next month. Especially me.
- 6:08And Brian are kind of doing love our kids playing sports and
- 6:12everything, but it's kind of like it's over very soon.
- 6:17We two games two games, two games, one game.
- 6:21All right, well let's start here, Brian.
- 6:23Let's start, let's look at the offensive performance because
- 6:25once again, we know the deal, just a Wednesday's been in that
- 6:28room more and more over the last couple weeks.
- 6:30Weeks. And what do we say last week?
- 6:34What do we say that? The number one point of this
- 6:37version, that we were going to, what had to be done.
- 6:40Feed the beast, and did they ever Feed the Bees between
- 6:44Malachi Thomas and He-Man 39 carries 186 yards. 4.8 per
- 6:50carry, not the five, we like, but a heck of a lot better than
- 6:54the 3.7 we've been averaging and Brian.
- 6:58Would you see out of Malachi man?
- 7:00That like like that makes you think he's the real deal.
- 7:05I tell you the thing that impresses me most about him is
- 7:08that he goes out there and there's not really a negative
- 7:11play in his game, he's always getting yardage.
- 7:14He has good Vision. Between the tackles when he gets
- 7:18to the second level, he can make guys mess and he just does a
- 7:21good job of not getting you behind the sticks.
- 7:25He's not going to dance the backfield.
- 7:27He's not going to you know search for the whole he's going
- 7:30to find. What's their get upfield?
- 7:32Get north and south and then try to To make a guy Miss.
- 7:37So and think that's the big thing and some of it is rubbing
- 7:40off on on him. His yards per carry the last two
- 7:46games are significantly better than his yards per carry for the
- 7:49season. He was like 5.8 on Saturday and
- 7:53I mean he had that big, you know, 25 + yd run that set up
- 7:58some things. He caught a couple passes for a
- 8:00few yards that again. Even if they don't go anywhere,
- 8:04it's that element of you. Must defend this with Rahim and
- 8:09you know, you got your, you've got to meet, you got your 12 and
- 8:13you got your want to have some diversity and it again I think
- 8:18we still want to see what both of them on the field.
- 8:19At the same time, I saw a play that was used with with the
- 8:25Wayne Loft and it caught my eye. I don't know if you caught this
- 8:27was on one of the runs they motioned to Wayne into the back
- 8:31Field behind the running back, snap the ball.
- 8:34It's a Old triple option plays what it is, except you're using
- 8:38a wide receiver, basically read it Braxton.
- 8:42Let It Go, but he pulled it and had the option to go to a little
- 8:44power option, right? And if you tell me, you put
- 8:47Rahim on the field and line them up wide and then motion him,
- 8:50it's even more diversity because if you're doing that, you're
- 8:54probably in a two tight end set. You know, you're in some sort of
- 8:59set where you're getting potentially a linebacker on him
- 9:03and to say, you're going to try to chase the edge with that.
- 9:05I'd love to see that play ran, let me ask this Prime because,
- 9:09you know, we're getting better. We're seeing the runs.
- 9:13Is there anything else we need to see from this room or any one
- 9:17else. We need to see from this room to
- 9:18maybe make it a perfect complementary room.
- 9:23I think at this point, the thing I'd like to see is maybe more
- 9:26targeting the running back in the passing game on passes that
- 9:29aren't screens. So, we know the screen games
- 9:34there. Yes, it's had had success here
- 9:37and there, not not unanimous success, right?
- 9:40It's had some, some negative plays and things like that based
- 9:44on when the, when the calls were made and things like that, but I
- 9:49want to see the running backs get involved in the actual
- 9:52passing game and some of that is putting some of those damned
- 9:55check Downs in this offense, where they can get the ball in
- 9:59space when the primary and secondary.
- 10:02Secondary options are covered and let them try to break a
- 10:07tackle, get up field, get the first down, maybe bust a big
- 10:09play. We haven't really seen that.
- 10:12There was some of that early in the season.
- 10:16We haven't really seen them. Put those elements back in the
- 10:19offense since then. But if we can get some of that
- 10:23in there where we can get these guys in space a little bit more,
- 10:26I think that would pay some dividends but I tell you one
- 10:30thing that has been put back Into the offense a little bit is
- 10:34some actual quarterback reads. Yes, there were numerous read
- 10:38options on Saturday and that definitely helped open up the
- 10:43offense, especially inside the tackles for Raheem and Malachi
- 10:49and you know, be behaving solid running game on Saturday 48
- 10:52yards on 11 carries. So you know right at four and a
- 10:55half a carry that's adjusted he did take a few sacks that might
- 10:59not have been great and There were a couple times he pulled it
- 11:03when he should have. Let it go the most and I think,
- 11:07the reason he let it go, cuz he thought he could wiggle away
- 11:10from the defensive end that was late in the third quarter.
- 11:12I think he doesn't pull it holds it and the guys like right right
- 11:17in front of him, and you see him wiggle and the guy just like
- 11:20stands. Like, you know, I'm not buying
- 11:22into the not taking that fake. Got about six yard loss and I
- 11:26tell you between that and then the scrambles, which we had seen
- 11:31earlier. In the season and you talked
- 11:33about Brian the whole time the offense.
- 11:36Is not doing the best because of Braxton, but the all sense is
- 11:40also not doing the worst because of Braxton and we're seeing it
- 11:44more and more and, you know, for him he had a pretty solid game.
- 11:49You know, close to 250 yard, passing couple, touchdowns, 64%
- 11:53completions but let's talk about the offensive line before we get
- 11:57into the passing game, I did not know this.
- 12:00I have not seen anything, it had not been any buzz, but Luke to
- 12:03Noodle was out on Saturday. I never heard the Reasonings or
- 12:08read the reasoning, but he was out and they had to get Nick.
- 12:11He got nicked against Syracuse, okay?
- 12:13But I didn't think you. It was one report isn't a game.
- 12:16Yeah. I didn't think was a missing a
- 12:18start situation so but you know, Silas filled in did a pretty
- 12:23admirable job there. But the person I was more
- 12:26impressed with was Parker Clements starting at right.
- 12:31Tackle probably had his best game of his career.
- 12:33I know it's still a young career.
- 12:35Here it is. But getting him on the field and
- 12:38actually having a game you know fish and be damned here, having
- 12:42a having a game where he looks like you know if he keeps
- 12:47progressing that he could be that guy at least at right
- 12:50tackle right now. If not you know potentially left
- 12:54tackle some time in the future that that's that's a good thing.
- 12:58Getting a guy out there and getting them some quality snaps
- 13:01and seeing them show it on the field.
- 13:04Yet that that's a positive take. Way, you know, outside of the
- 13:07outcome that you had getting the win.
- 13:10Exactly. Oh, the other thing is, you
- 13:12might be the only offensive line than that has ever got called
- 13:15for holding when he himself was being held on the screen pass.
- 13:19Like like there's not that that happened to me against
- 13:22Bridgewater back in 2004. So if that's the second
- 13:27documented time, ever second document of time a offensive
- 13:30lineman is literally getting held so they can't set up a
- 13:33screens. So the Defensive players,
- 13:37essentially is defensive holding in some way and he gets called
- 13:41it sets us back, 10 yards. But yeah.
- 13:46Let me ask this problem. Obviously, there were some
- 13:48changes if Luke comes back next week.
- 13:52Do you do you think it's Parker it right?
- 13:54Or do you think, do you think Vice sticks to his or going to
- 13:58continue to rotate? That's hard to say because
- 14:01obviously, you know, Silas did fairly well as well, you know,
- 14:06there were, there were some, I'd say Silas didn't do any worse
- 14:11and I've seen two new to do most of the Season, okay?
- 14:14So I think not seeing a drop off, there is a positive
- 14:17outcome. Again, we weren't playing the
- 14:20level of competition. At the defensive line that we
- 14:24probably played throughout the year.
- 14:26Very true. So you got to take some of this
- 14:29with a grain of salt but You still got to play who's in front
- 14:35of you. And if you go out there and
- 14:36handle your business regardless of who it's against, I'll say
- 14:39this, they look better than they looked against Middle,
- 14:43Tennessee, and Richmond. So, and I think Georgia Tech
- 14:47brings more to the table than Middle Tennessee and Richmond.
- 14:51So I'll take that, I'll take that.
- 14:54I will too. I still goes back.
- 14:56I still go back to what you always say, put your best five
- 14:59out there and the way we've seen Parker play the last few weeks.
- 15:02He, He might be one of the better 5, all the changing
- 15:06inside that offensive room. You're kind of saying we're
- 15:10seeing more positive than we are - we're seeing the line.
- 15:13Play with more fire. We're seeing them play better as
- 15:16a unit. You know, there have been times
- 15:19it felt like early in the season where we were, was it looked
- 15:22like this side of the line, felt the plate.
- 15:26This side of the line did feel the play and the next thing, you
- 15:29know, something bad happens. So yep.
- 15:32But again, in a positive direction on the line, now let's
- 15:35flip over to the passing game in Lowndes.
- 15:39Big part down. We gave up a couple sacks in
- 15:42Bryant and you've been preaching it.
- 15:44You've been slamming your hand on the table.
- 15:46We finally got it. We had some short.
- 15:48We had some good intermediate routes, we have some screens and
- 15:51then we sprinkled in some down field passes.
- 15:53That actually worked. How shocked were you that?
- 15:57Like what you've been banging? They finally did.
- 16:00And we saw every, I mean, what did Peter?
- 16:03But twice, maybe three times when we moved the ball, just
- 16:06about every yeah. Yeah, we were moving the ball.
- 16:09Every Drive, even in the second half.
- 16:11We only got six points but we were still having success.
- 16:14We just a lot of times either shot ourselves in the foot,
- 16:17whether it was a player with the penalty or whether it was, you
- 16:21know, a bad call at a bad time. We really only had one one
- 16:25series, I think in the second half that was truly awful and
- 16:30we'll address that here shortly. But yeah, it was definitely a
- 16:36more focused attempt at getting the passing game going.
- 16:42So I like that that that that's that's another positive, take
- 16:45away from this when they focused effort to get The Passing game
- 16:48going and the big beneficiary of that was Trey Turner.
- 16:53Oh my God was he man his career day. 74, 187 and a touch throw
- 16:59in the Ville Jet Sweep, egapp 194 One total yards from
- 17:03scrimmage and the display. And the first one was mostly
- 17:08him. It was him, it wasn't, it was a
- 17:11good design. Yeah.
- 17:13Go back and watch, and if you watch what it is, it's a it's a
- 17:18combo screen. Post will route, Caleb and him.
- 17:23Look like they're going to go into stock block.
- 17:26And essentially, if the guys lay off which they did or, they
- 17:29actually came up, they run their routes very well.
- 17:32Design concept Braxton. Put it short.
- 17:35If he puts it on the money Trail runs down, the sideline doesn't
- 17:38have to make any moves. He put it to him short which we
- 17:42know is a big problem, you know, one of his bad-looking passes of
- 17:47the day that worked out. But tail on that run, man.
- 17:53So many elements. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:58I mean he broke a tackle, he dragged got in the end zone.
- 18:01I mean it was, it was a big, big play for him.
- 18:04And then that kind of really got the kind of got everything going
- 18:08right. Like from that point on yeah, in
- 18:10the first half the offense was pretty much clicking and really
- 18:15only got stopped at one time where there was a couple of
- 18:18penalties set us back into a long down and situation.
- 18:22It's true. Yeah.
- 18:24And you you already said it a little bit but Extend having one
- 18:29of his better days throwing the ball in terms of statistics, but
- 18:35a lot of the routine throws are still looking a little wonky,
- 18:38right? What the ones that look wonky or
- 18:41is the ones that are getting about 20 yards downfield, right?
- 18:45Trace pass. The one that I remember was the
- 18:49first three and out where it was like a little comeback route
- 18:51about 15 yards and he put it short and you're sitting there
- 18:55because it was a really good design.
- 18:57In a really good call and he puts it short.
- 19:00Batavia on Robinson. Touchdown that ball wobbled and
- 19:04took forever kid. Get there.
- 19:06I know it was a rollout so I don't expect it to be perfect.
- 19:10But you know, that's one of those things.
- 19:12You feel like a middle school quarterback to make a better
- 19:15looking faster than that. At least a high school
- 19:19quarterback, most of them, at least somebody.
- 19:23Yeah, it's going to be interesting to see how this goes
- 19:26forward and I think a lot of that's going to depend on how
- 19:32the next couple games go. Absolutely.
- 19:35Because I think at the next couple games don't go, well, I
- 19:38think we see Tosh you have to and then we'll see how that
- 19:44goes. You know, thankfully one of
- 19:47those games, the coming up and we're going to talk about that
- 19:50more on Wednesday but we're playing a team that doesn't put
- 19:54up a ton of points so we did More than likely knock on wood,
- 20:02it shouldn't eat a ton of points for that to be a w but we'll
- 20:05see. Well say we know how things
- 20:07break how crazy it is. The one thing that sort of drove
- 20:11me and you crazy Brian and continues to drive us.
- 20:14Crazy is some of the third down calls because they literally
- 20:21look like a coin flip call. It's okay, you know there's been
- 20:26times we criticized for being concerned. - yeah, we're going
- 20:28to criticize for that, but then there's times where being hyper
- 20:36aggressive is idiotic, especially the way we're running
- 20:39the ball. Well, there's being aggressive
- 20:43then there's being unnecessarily, aggressive or
- 20:46recklessly aggressive, right? I'm going to point out, we
- 20:50always talk about calculated risk.
- 20:51We don't, we don't talk about going out there and, you know,
- 20:54just throwing balls to the wall and and seeing what happens when
- 20:57you talk about taking calculated risk, understanding the
- 21:01situation and where risk-taking is beneficial for your team or
- 21:06where Ben are taking a risk. Doesn't necessarily hurt you if
- 21:09you don't get it. Yep.
- 21:11And Talk about third down in one after a team, just cuts it 2-1
- 21:16score and you're taking a 30-yard shot.
- 21:20Downfield with the quarterback that has struggled to throw
- 21:24routine balls all game. Yep, it just it didn't seem
- 21:29like, the right time you had had success, you know, in that 10 to
- 21:3415, yard range, most of the game, even when Braxton's not
- 21:40exactly throwing the Is spiral the ball.
- 21:42Still getting there in that range?
- 21:44Why are we taking not just the risk with the ball potentially
- 21:50but the risk of giving the team that has a little bit of
- 21:54momentum now giving the ball back after after a quick three
- 21:58and out. Right?
- 21:59Absolutely. And that's why I called them.
- 22:01That's why I put it on here, coin flips, because you don't
- 22:04know what you're going to get in that situation.
- 22:05Third and one, especially after they scored, is you want to slow
- 22:08that momentum. And the way we had ran the ball
- 22:10with Braxton. Malachi with Rahim, even ranging
- 22:13running the jet Suite, we were getting positive plays, we were
- 22:18getting positive place so it's one of those.
- 22:19Why not run it? Where I got more frustrated with
- 22:22it. Brian is there were some plays
- 22:23like third and 14, you know, we're we're running inside, you
- 22:30know, inside zone or run a QB draw versus okay.
- 22:35That is the plate. Take the risk.
- 22:37That is the place. Go downfield.
- 22:39If you miss it. Oh, well, we're putting anyway.
- 22:40If you hit it. Great, if you if they pick it
- 22:43well you're probably going to put it about where they'd get
- 22:46the ball but then but then there's this whole side where
- 22:50there were some plays where it was stirred and you know, 10 12,
- 22:53we ran like some quick slant, some quick passes one screen
- 22:58where it was like I like that call there.
- 23:02Yeah I like that call there because you're getting in your
- 23:05playmaker somewhere between five and eight yards, if there is
- 23:10one, missed tackle. Like, it's the, it's the, it's
- 23:14the Taylor Robinson Mastery of the inside screen.
- 23:20Yeah. And we talked about all the
- 23:22time, right? So, if you're going to throw the
- 23:25ball short of the line to game, it's got to be a ball.
- 23:29That gets your guys in space, right?
- 23:31You can't, you can't just be something where, you know,
- 23:34you're slamming, slamming the ball against the line of
- 23:37scrimmage, and hoping that it squirts out on the other side
- 23:39for a big game. Uh-huh.
- 23:42Again it's this whole it's literally he's taking the coin,
- 23:45he's flipping it on starting 15. I'm just going to run the ball
- 23:48here. All its third and one let me go
- 23:50deep. I like logic with my play
- 23:53calling, not just this might work here and in my logic
- 23:59doesn't mean predictable logic just means.
- 24:02Okay, this makes sense given the risk reward of the of the moment
- 24:06of the down and distance of the situation.
- 24:08Third, and one, if you tell me, we're going to pass the ball,
- 24:11we're going to run. A three yard out.
- 24:13We're going to run a little fake inside Zone and on a 3-yard out,
- 24:16we're going to try to put it front shoulder to catch the
- 24:18ball, perfect sense. It's a quick developing play or
- 24:22think about the Gallo play that he dropped a couple days ago.
- 24:25That was quick run. He went and hooked up what?
- 24:27Three and a half yards on the third and two play.
- 24:29He dropped it. Unfortunately, but that's okay.
- 24:32That logic makes sense. Yeah.
- 24:34All right, let's roll on how he was.
- 24:38We're special teams Saturday to winning that game and I mean, I
- 24:43mean, especially Parker Roma. I mean, and he's, he's really
- 24:47getting to the point where I mean, he is an absolute weapon
- 24:50for us is, you know, short short of the, the to missed short ones
- 24:56chip chip shots early in the season, which he's correct.
- 25:00Yeah, he's grumpy, he's been absolute money.
- 25:03And, you know, I'm not going to knock him for missing, the one
- 25:08he missed because he had, he had Plus 50 had the leg slightly to
- 25:13the left. So can I mean I'll take it and
- 25:17you can knock the call to take the kick there to take the
- 25:20points more than you. Do him missing it and he and you
- 25:25don't knock it to Bunch because he's shown, he's got the leg and
- 25:27he's more or less. Got the accuracy to make it from
- 25:30there. It's just, I mean that's that's
- 25:32a coin flip call that you gotta, you know, note take that take
- 25:35the risk if you want the points or take the risk, if you don't
- 25:38get the points, you're giving up the field position and you know
- 25:40what it is. Spots to the 48-yard urchin in
- 25:43the first half, you know, playing Tempo getting in range
- 25:47and then kicking it through like, that, that takes some
- 25:51nerves. So, yeah, he's one of those
- 25:53guys, you feel, if you get in a situation late, the way he's
- 25:55been kicking. It can work.
- 25:57Yeah. Peter Moore again, you know, I'm
- 26:00team. He's got boom.
- 26:04He's got touch when I say touch. If you he's trying to pin, you
- 26:08he puts the wedge. If he gets the distant control,
- 26:11Right? And it lands on the one.
- 26:12It's coming back. So it's not rolling into the end
- 26:14zone and the accuracy to the sideline.
- 26:17I mean, he's 18 and if he can envelop, you get bigger and get
- 26:21his leg even stronger than what it is.
- 26:23He's going to be on an NFL team and for 25 years, without a
- 26:27towel. Yeah, he's already at where most
- 26:30second-year kickers are the real good.
- 26:32Second York. Yes.
- 26:34So if he can continue that trajectory that's going to be
- 26:37big for him, that's going to put him in NFL conversations.
- 26:42So that's going to be huge and I like to see it.
- 26:45I like out the gate that, you know, special teams.
- 26:48We had two big question marks coming into the season in the
- 26:51kicking game. And both of those have been,
- 26:54definitely more more assets than they've been liabilities the
- 26:56whole year abso-freakin'-lutely, and we always talk about hidden
- 27:01yardage. We talk about it with Romo, 10
- 27:04yardage there because you're getting the points.
- 27:05When you're not expected more, pending people deep Taylor
- 27:08Robinson is another, just he He eats into net punting average is
- 27:12anytime. He gets his hands on the ball
- 27:15and this week, he had 31 total yards.
- 27:18He had a little seven yard run that.
- 27:19I think he started like at the 24.
- 27:22He got it over the 30 and then he had the big 24-yard run that
- 27:26really helped with field position.
- 27:29It would not surprise me if the next month would not surprise
- 27:33me. Is if they said just don't kick
- 27:36it to him, he's a risk to take it to the house.
- 27:38He always eats into our net punt.
- 27:41You know, aim at 10 to 12 yards, short, and angle.
- 27:44It will deal. Will will will will control the
- 27:47outcome of the situation. Yeah.
- 27:49Where he can't get the ball in his hand to potentially make a
- 27:51big one. Absolutely.
- 27:54Absolutely. Yeah.
- 27:54He's definitely out there, helping us maintain that field
- 27:59position. So now we got Pretty good
- 28:02returns. We've had pretty good returns
- 28:04all year. I know King was doing a lot
- 28:06better when he was healthy, get them.
- 28:07But the return game has been been good in the kickoffs.
- 28:11Tay Rob has been excellent on punt return, especially for a
- 28:15unit that last year was played by Bluffs.
- 28:18Off my hand and not really able to find a guy that could be a
- 28:22constant back there, to Rob has stepped up this year and not
- 28:25just eliminated that aspect of it but become a big asset in
- 28:31terms. Of helping with field position
- 28:34and yet the kicker's doing their thing, man.
- 28:37I mean, it's been a, it's been a solid effort on special teams.
- 28:40So shout out to the our coordinator Chavez there and
- 28:45just doing a good job. Absolutely.
- 28:47Get these guys are ready for game day.
- 28:49Absolutely. All right, Brian before we turn
- 28:51it over to the defensive side of the ball.
- 28:53We are going to take a quick pause for a message from our
- 28:56digital partners. As we take a quick break, we'd

- 29:15Grassroots digital studio.com forward slash free Dash website,
- 29:20Dash report. Now back to the episode All
- 29:25right. Brian a tale.
- 29:27As old as time for any Virginia Tech defense, running
- 29:31quarterbacks. And all those Sims didn't quite
- 29:34do what Schrader did, we're what the guy for Notre Dame?
- 29:39Did he still had a solid day? 11 carries 60-yard.
- 29:43We've been sacked him a couple times into that.
- 29:44So he's probably true. Carrie was probably probably
- 29:49closer to 80. So let me ask this.
- 29:53Is it the linebackers and the secondary or is it are we having
- 29:57missing tackles or we haven't defensive line integrity?
- 30:00And I got to see this yesterday with the Niners and Camera,
- 30:03who's calling the game, but he showed in the first half how we
- 30:07weren't in the right spots? So we were leaving, Justin
- 30:10filled gaps to run through and then he showed the adjustments.
- 30:13And it's like, there's nowhere for him to go because they're
- 30:16keeping sound quality. What is it for this team right
- 30:19now? While it's a little bit of both,
- 30:22it's more of the former than the latter.
- 30:25The D line is more or less doing what they need to do that where
- 30:30they're struggling is actually on backside contain more than
- 30:33they are on necessarily Gap Integrity.
- 30:37Okay, A lot of times on with backside contain is that they're
- 30:41they're relinquishing that leverage to the quarterbacks
- 30:45quicker than they need to and then you know, the quarterbacks
- 30:49got a little bit more To get to the edge than they do to meet
- 30:52them there. So that's a little bit of a
- 30:55problem, but I think the bigger problem is some of those missing
- 30:58tackles and some of the safety fits that we've had the last few
- 31:03weeks, they haven't been awful. The problem is that when they
- 31:07have happened, it's very much like last year where it's when I
- 31:12want to stay if he doesn't get where they need to be, that's
- 31:14that's when you get those big plays coming up.
- 31:17It's really hard to stop. Way for going from going less
- 31:22than 20, if the safety misses, the tackle in the fit.
- 31:25All right upside. Probably for the next month
- 31:29until we get to UVA. We're not going to have guys who
- 31:32are super Fleet of foot. Another got dudes, got a little
- 31:35bit of athleticism, but whoever we see a b c does not and
- 31:40Miami's to indict, similar to the kid at do a little bit of
- 31:44athleticism, but none of that crap to be worried about. let me
- 31:50ask this, all right, if I told you that gives was going to have
- 31:56100 plus on less than 15 carries, close to 50 yards,
- 32:00receiving But how would you have felt on Saturday at 11:55?
- 32:12Yardage, I wouldn't have felt really good about their.
- 32:14Like, that's probably, that's probably a bad day for us.
- 32:17But when I slipped in no touchdowns Feel much better, but
- 32:23much better. And and it it was a couple
- 32:26things. I mean I think overall we did a
- 32:28good job of being where we needed to be a lot of times.
- 32:33I think the big thing that we had trouble with was was getting
- 32:37guys to the ground. Consistently.
- 32:38I mean the last few weeks we have become a questionable
- 32:42tackling team we've reverted that's a little class earning
- 32:48and we'll see if that Trend continues or if that tight.
- 32:51Ends up a little bit. I don't know if it is just a
- 32:54season wearing on and some, you know, technique going out the
- 32:56window a little bit or what it may be, but we've definitely
- 33:01struggled with getting guys to the turf consistently and I mean
- 33:04one was like, I can't remember if it was if it was Sims or or
- 33:11Gibbs. But we had one, we missed like
- 33:13three tackles and one of those was like should have been
- 33:17routine should have been yes, get him on the ground and then
- 33:19all of a sudden he squirts out Breaks another tackle and next
- 33:22thing, you know, he's in the Red Zone.
- 33:24Yeah. And we got bailed out a couple
- 33:27times. There was two big plays that
- 33:28gives had they got called back for.
- 33:31I think one was definitely holding.
- 33:33I think the other was a block in the back.
- 33:35Yeah. What was a block in the back?
- 33:36They talked about that was like, it, was that borderline call?
- 33:40But hey, sometimes they go your way.
- 33:43Sometimes they don't, right? Yeah, yes.
- 33:45I mean, we got bailed out on the, like I said, one of those
- 33:47went for a touchdown. Long touchdown.
- 33:50Yep. Dead ended up getting put back.
- 33:53I think it like the 35-yard line or something like that.
- 33:56So it was still, you know, he cut still cut the field in half
- 33:59but it wasn't the huge, you know, 60 plus yard touchdown
- 34:02that it was initially there, exactly.
- 34:06I think the way we have to look at it especially with him is the
- 34:09way Gibbs, how highly regarded was me again.
- 34:12He was a top 50 player, a top five running back coming out
- 34:15just, you know, two years ago. Did you have to feel okay?
- 34:19Because He had 11 and he had 100 plus.
- 34:22But once you take that 60-plus yarder that he ran later in the
- 34:25second half out, we were getting to the ground.
- 34:29We were meeting at the point of attack.
- 34:32And that's what you and I and I found when our defensive line is
- 34:36getting there. We do a pretty good job of
- 34:39getting guys to the ground. It's when things when gaps are
- 34:43there, when the holes are there, when the safeties have to come
- 34:46up and the gaps a little bit bigger than you like?
- 34:48And they've got to make that tackle in space and there's
- 34:51still some wiggle room. Yeah, that's when things get a
- 34:54little dicey and that's true with postings.
- 34:57I mean, those are, those are just generally harder tackles to
- 35:00make Make but you still got a big sure that you're getting
- 35:04guys to the turf and if you're able to fit them up, you got to
- 35:07get them to the ground. It's true.
- 35:09Now one guy who did have a good day Brian statistic wise was
- 35:13Alan Tisdale 12 total tackles two and a half for lost even had
- 35:16a quarterback hurry and I know he had some missteps here and
- 35:20there but is this one of these things where is this like is
- 35:24this just had a really good day was it the type of scheme we're
- 35:27playing or is it one of those things where airs you saw a few
- 35:31weeks ago? He's clean them up.
- 35:33Well he's cleaned them up where they're not as they're not as
- 35:36penal as they were before. Yeah.
- 35:40I mean that's really hard to say I think we need.
- 35:42You know the jury is still out at this point.
- 35:44I think I need a little bit more more tape to see if this is a
- 35:49positive trend. Whether this is something scheme
- 35:53wise that they did differently or if this is something that was
- 35:57just kind of a kind of a one-off, you know.
- 36:01Hopefully we're building on something going forward.
- 36:04I didn't see it. I didn't see anything overtly
- 36:06that said they changed how they were deploying him or anything
- 36:10like that. Yeah, I think the only person
- 36:13they that they deployed a little bit differently which actually
- 36:16helped with one of the things we talked about last week was
- 36:19seeing bar no stand up a whole lot more This week and I think
- 36:24that that helped with his overall conditioning and play to
- 36:28his strengths, a little bit more as well.
- 36:29But when we do at Tisdale, like I said, I think the jury is
- 36:33still out on whether, you know, this is going to be something of
- 36:37a trend or whether it's just a one-off good day for him.
- 36:40But either way, you know, he did pretty well there was like, you
- 36:43know, like everybody there's a play here, play there that you
- 36:47did, make that you could have. But in terms of his overall
- 36:50game, probably, One of the better games.
- 36:52He's played all season. Yeah, good for you, hopefully
- 36:55build upon it, especially going up to the stretch run here.
- 36:59All right, Brian. Something that we had harked on
- 37:01and against the Syracuse game of how bad we were on the money
- 37:04Downs, on third, and fourth down.
- 37:06Well, this week significantly better on those two downs,
- 37:09combine 4415 for Georgia Tech, definitely hurt them.
- 37:14Now, one of those for was the touchdown where tomorrow Connor
- 37:17did get sort of burned by McGowan and McGowan we know is
- 37:22probably their best overall wide receiver but you know, just
- 37:27looking at it is the field like was just just a game Flow.
- 37:31Like we got a head so it hurt them or was it something
- 37:35different? Where even when they were they
- 37:38had managerial situations, they didn't know what was coming from
- 37:41us in those situations. Probably a little bit of both.
- 37:47I think we've been better on third down this year
- 37:56significantly compared to last year but fourth down has been
- 38:00awful. Yes.
- 38:02And I think this is just kind of a.
- 38:05We finally put that Trend in place for a full four quarters.
- 38:09At least on third down. I think third down was probably
- 38:13that was probably our best third down.
- 38:15Yeah, performance, all year 33 for 12.
- 38:18I mean, yeah, I'll take that every day.
- 38:22Yeah, I'll take 5412 every day. Yeah, so, I mean, they'll on
- 38:28third down, I mean, there's not a lot to complain about, you
- 38:32know, I think we put them in situations where they felt like
- 38:35they needed to get first downs because they were playing a
- 38:39little bit of catch-up. Especially as we went further
- 38:42into the the second quarter and Third quarter, but I think we
- 38:48did it. We just did a good job of Taking
- 38:52what they were giving us and kind of understanding, all
- 38:55right, well, if we get them to the ground here will get off the
- 38:59field understanding that down and distance.
- 39:01And I think we did a good job of understanding that down in
- 39:02distance and not giving them any more than we could allow, but
- 39:06still doing a pretty consistent job of getting them to the turf.
- 39:10All right. Well, something else we got to
- 39:12do. We haven't seen too many of we
- 39:13it was a fourth down, but we got a red zone stop.
- 39:18You mentioned to me, you thought Collins was chasing points.
- 39:21yeah, I mean, but isn't that sort of beneficial if a guy's
- 39:26trying to chase points because they're down, you know, the way
- 39:32we had played all year, you almost feel like if you look
- 39:35statistically it, what we had done on fourth down and what we
- 39:38had done in the Red Zone, you want to taking the same risk,
- 39:43He's chasing points there and I say that only because of how
- 39:47much time was left on the clock, but I get your point.
- 39:50If you look at historically this season on fourth down and Red
- 39:55Zone that was better than a coin flip, right more than enough
- 39:58coin, flip significantly better than a coin flip and especially
- 40:02you know, when you when you put the Red Zone factor in there.
- 40:05So finally getting a actual true Red Zone.
- 40:08Stop that wasn't a turnover and it was The turnover in terms of
- 40:14forced turnover. Not a turnover on downs and
- 40:17getting them off the field. They're obviously you saved
- 40:20three, you gave your defense of confidence and the defense more
- 40:25or less played well in the second half and really the whole
- 40:27game. Overall, you know, missed
- 40:31tackles the side. That's really the biggest
- 40:33complaint I've got about the defense, I knew that their
- 40:38tandem in the backfield we're going to put up some yards and
- 40:41they did but we did a good job. Stop, you know, that one
- 40:44touchdown on fourth and one aside fourth.
- 40:48I forget what it was fourth and whatever that when Connor got
- 40:51beat, that play is side, we did a good job.
- 40:55The whole game in the secondary covering those wideouts.
- 41:01Yep. Definitely, you know you only
- 41:03have 180 our past and I know we talked about it.
- 41:06They're primarily a run days team but they were still two top
- 41:0960 ranked in both passing. And running the ball so you know
- 41:15you're going to see more Ron but you knew they could be
- 41:17successful throwing the ball. So I think that was a such a big
- 41:20key and again. There were two guys.
- 41:24There were two guys on the field.
- 41:26That could really beat us. Jeff Sims and Gibbs.
- 41:31They didn't beat us, they didn't beat us.
- 41:33And if you told me, we're sitting here talking about loss
- 41:36today, I'd say maybe Sims has 20 30 more yards and gives has one
- 41:44or two more touchdowns but we held last piece KRON4, we take a
- 41:49look at the pickles and wrap this thing up this afternoon.
- 41:53What about the play of Jalen Griffin, man?
- 41:58Yeah. I mean, he played well, he was
- 41:59in that second line of that. Defensive end plate.
- 42:01Played really well, you know, I don't know if this was kind of a
- 42:07boost, his brother for the Griffin, the Griffin Bowl.
- 42:11Yeah. Whether it was just a little
- 42:15bit, lighter competition or whether it was something where
- 42:18he's, you know, putting pieces together and starting to
- 42:21starting to turn the corner there.
- 42:23But that strip sack was a big moment in the game because that
- 42:25set us up for one of the two field goals.
- 42:27As we got to the second half that ended up being key and
- 42:30closing this one out. So big shout out to Jaylin Griff
- 42:34and that was a good game for him.
- 42:35Hopefully see, see more of that against BC coming up this week.
- 42:39It's true. And he should have had the
- 42:40second sack because the that was a soft roughing the passer call
- 42:45that he took her some supermodel, soft Charmin, soft
- 42:49taking down Sims, that would have put them in like I think
- 42:53forth and 26, or something insane.
- 42:56Like, you know, But for him seeing just hymns take a step
- 43:02and again with the Hope becomes it's not only with the second
- 43:05line is some mixing and matching with the first team guys, to
- 43:09give them extra breathers. We've talked about it.
- 43:12We talked about Cole Nelson coming on.
- 43:15I think Jalen has the skill set. You just have to deploy him at
- 43:19the right time. I don't think just looking at
- 43:21his size, you can't expect him to go into a lot of running
- 43:25downs but When it's those second and long chances, let him go in.
- 43:32And then, you know, put Garbodor barno out and then flip them
- 43:35back in if he becomes third and short.
- 43:38Like let's be wise with how we rotate him, because I think he
- 43:41can become that guy. We need to give them those
- 43:44breath. So when we get in those tight
- 43:45games late, they're not done for the day.
- 43:49Yeah, I mean he's the ideal guy to give bar know a blow their
- 43:52he's the ideal guy to come in opposite Cole Nelson.
- 43:56I think the problem that we were having early on is that our
- 43:59second line was pairing him with Eli and and then that that
- 44:05that's that's the way to undersized to be something that
- 44:07you can roll for more than to place a few Downs of a series.
- 44:12So I think that's the big problem in so having cold
- 44:17Nelson, come on, I think maybe You something that's helping
- 44:20Griffin really utilize his talents a little bit more
- 44:23because he's got a bigger body opposite him that can do some of
- 44:29those things to help out in the running game.
- 44:31Where yeah you can still run at Jalen maybe but you know you'll
- 44:36he's got somebody on the backside of that can kind of
- 44:38clean some of that up and it can't run both directions.
- 44:42Absolutely. Well, Brian prediction wise I
- 44:46think Georgia Tech completely wrong.
- 44:48Glad to Be wrong. You went for jigna Tech and we
- 44:51did nine not 3. So you know super shocked me
- 44:57only marginally shocked you this week.
- 45:00Yeah only marginally. I think the thing here is that
- 45:04you know I think some of this was pessimism was fully setting
- 45:09in. Yes.
- 45:10Still in and it's still in and and I think the thing that we
- 45:14need to realize here is that because pessimism is set in we
- 45:18can't Overreact to this outcome either can't because this is an
- 45:22expected outcome at best, right? Like we expect to win by more
- 45:27than a touchdown against this type of Georgia Tech Team every
- 45:30year. So let's not beat our chest.
- 45:34We can be happy with the with the wind, which we are very
- 45:36happy with the win super happy. But let's not recalibrate based
- 45:41on this win. We still need to do other things
- 45:45against better competition before we start saying.
- 45:48All right. Right.
- 45:50We're making a turn here. Exactly, exactly.
- 45:54So so grain of salt, but good, good, wind players played hard,
- 45:58you love that and they play hard.
- 46:01Every game Win, Lose execution, errors, coaching errors, all
- 46:05that. I mean they've been putting it
- 46:07all out there. So as you respect them for that,
- 46:09you absolutely have to respect him for that, especially what
- 46:12happened in three of the four games prior.
- 46:15So super, super shout out to them.
- 46:17And actually for the five games For that.
- 46:20All right Ron, you almost did it.
- 46:24So glorify his brother closed Circle was 9:00 and 1:00 and I
- 46:32want to read down. Just so y'all know what he got,
- 46:34Miami pit. He took mommy in the points.
- 46:36Miami wins out. Right?
- 46:38Syracuse at home. He laid the six Syracuse.
- 46:40Won by two touchdowns. Took wait, wait!
- 46:43Blows the doors off Duke. Could have what?
- 46:46You probably could have laid 33 in that one so Good doubled it
- 46:49up, is he say comes back, handles Louisville, Notre Dame.
- 46:53Runs away from UNC late B, why you not only covers the two and
- 46:59a half, almost hang 70 on UVA. In Provo, billing API, are they
- 47:05easily be Texas state line else? Forty five to seven was the
- 47:10final anyone who gave took Ohio state, land, 80 and a half
- 47:16points has not watched any of their Games.
- 47:19They were coming in hot, they had played trash.
- 47:23Bronwyn Penn State. And then the big matchup of the
- 47:26day he tooks party in the points.
- 47:28Sparty wins out, right? And probably even the way we
- 47:34regardless of that game for you were probably going to cover
- 47:36that. Yep.
- 47:37So 330, Florida, State, Clemson. There's about 12 seconds left on
- 47:45the clock, Florida, State's down in stages down three, and it's
- 47:50the ultimate bad beat. Ultimate bad beat since Lee.
- 47:56There was a it was a fumble scoop and score scoop and score
- 48:00with 3 seconds left. To draw.
- 48:06We got it at 10. We did not get it at nine and a
- 48:08half. I don't think we would have
- 48:09changed either at nine and a half from FSU, and it doesn't
- 48:14really change a ton in the, in our, in our matchups either
- 48:17because we both went with with FSU here.
- 48:20So no, don't change it. It will just move the draw into
- 48:24the into the loss column for both of us.
- 48:26Yeah. But what this week did do is, we
- 48:31are going to have a race down the home stretch.
- 48:35Even as crazy. And as bad as my weekend,
- 48:37started a huge ACC Perfection for me 63 and one to keep a
- 48:44one-game lead Brian's at 5140 and one.
- 48:49I'm at 52:39 and one. So made it three games this week
- 48:55Made Up 3 games this week, which I want to do like that myself on
- 48:59the back for you. Going - enough.
- 49:02I didn't lose them. Yeah.
- 49:06You at least were better than the the coin flip to keep the
- 49:09lead. I was better.
- 49:12Hey, I was two out of three. I mean I don't trust PC anymore
- 49:16so I will pick them to beat us because that's been my Mo don't
- 49:22trust them. They're beating us then.
- 49:25But yeah, it was, it was a fun thing to watch it.
- 49:27When I woke up on Sunday morning and started looking, I woke up.
- 49:32Like, in the middle of the night and I rolled over and I looked
- 49:35at the phone and I saw it was like 45-42 UVA and that's why I
- 49:40mean we lost that one. Didn't pay attention to how much
- 49:43time was left. Turn it over, turn it over
- 49:45again. When I wake up five hours later
- 49:4866 245, how much time was left in that game to scored for three
- 49:54touchdowns and a field goal? It's like, oh yeah, I was
- 49:56looking like early third quarter here.
- 49:59It was like 2:00 in the morning. It felt like I don't It was man.
