- 0:02This is an unspoiled network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering one piece
- 0:12episodes three ninety five and three ninety six time limit. The human auction begins
- 0:20and the fist explodes destroy the auction. In these episodes, we've got a
- 0:29slave market, kiddos, a slave market that is depicted simultaneously as horrible as
- 0:37anyone would imagine a slave market to be, but also a lot more colorful,
- 0:44lively, and more like an entertainment than I was ever expecting. Welcome
- 0:52to spoil Me. Welcome to the show everyone. I am Natasha. Thank
- 1:14you very much to Florian for commissioning this episode. What's up Florian, if
- 1:18you're here, thank you very much. I am y'all really caught off guard
- 1:26by the way this episode like, so this was for those who aren't aware.
- 1:30Commissioned as a voyeur, which means that I watched the episode while on
- 1:34camera and everybody gets to see my reactions to what happens, and I went
- 1:41into it. I think it was sarahim who like asked what I was thinking,
- 1:45why I was commissioned for this particular couple of episodes, And they asked,
- 1:49do you think it's gonna be like fist punch victory moment. Do you
- 1:53think it's gonna be something really sad? Like? Are you what are you
- 1:57guessing? And I thought it was going to be a victory thing, but
- 2:04not like you know, finishing an arc type victory, but like there would
- 2:07be something very satisfying. And it's funny because that's what it wound up being.
- 2:15But it comes so late. It's literally like the last thing to happen
- 2:21right before the credits is the satisfying thing. And I had literally the whole
- 2:27episode just been like, somebody kill this guy. Somebody just fucking do something
- 2:30to this fucking guy. Like I was ready to snap because I hated this
- 2:37character so much. What is his name? Guys Saint Something, because they
- 2:42they're like holy beings or that's the story they're telling everybody, right, so
- 2:49he everybody is going by Saint Something, which really, can you imagine being
- 2:57amongst people who believed themselves to truly like to occupy a place of a god?
- 3:05Basically I can't. You know, I know that they're actual people out
- 3:09there, but they're usually somewhat guarded in saying it out loud because they understand
- 3:15how that would be perceived. And these folks just really are being what they
- 3:23are right out in the open, and I keep being surprised. Saint Charles,
- 3:30Okay, thank you, Sarah Fums has punched the rich. Indeed,
- 3:37Sarah fhim. Indeed, so I just realized, I'm like on camera only
- 3:43just now realizing my nails match my top almost completely, exactly perfectly. Nobody
- 3:49who's listening cares, but I promise the effect is very, very pleasing.
- 3:53I like it. Sarah Fums says worthless, inbred, entitled, asshole or
- 4:00any other such descriptions are also valid. Yeah, this dude, and I
- 4:04said this while watching. They really knocked it out of the park making somebody
- 4:15so hateful, And I mean, it's really interesting after going through the number
- 4:24of villains that we have for this show. Every arc has its own batties
- 4:28and it's got its own particular like focus on one batty, and there have
- 4:32been plenty that I have not liked. But when I really hate somebody,
- 4:41I kind of feel like, okay, Oda has zeroed in on the particularly
- 4:46worst type of person, and that was what I thought, like with sandom
- 4:54and I'm realizing now that there are like a lot more types of worse person
- 5:00then I really am prepared to admit to myself because I don't like thinking about
- 5:06what that means for the state of the world, you know, knowing that,
- 5:11like there are just so many varieties of complete asshole piece of shit,
- 5:17and this dude just I think was it was spandom right, not sandom to
- 5:25say spandom. I don't remember what I said, but you know how I'm
- 5:27talking about. I really hated him because of his sadism there, you know,
- 5:33and I said a couple of times that it felt like there was like
- 5:35a sexual edge to the way that Robin was being treated. Even if the
- 5:40show couldn't really go there, it felt like it was definitely in the air.
- 5:46That's also how it feels with Kamy, like, let's just be completely
- 5:49real. They're like the fact that Kamy is a mermaid, it's almost like
- 5:58nobody is really treat that as what it is. Like there's still a feeling
- 6:02of like, well, we're going to raper though, even though she's a
- 6:04mermaid and that's like possible, I guess, like in a way, but
- 6:13not you know what I'm talking about, Like that, it's just a really
- 6:16weird thing how they managed to tow that line where they never get explicit about
- 6:23what the threat is, but we all fucking can tell because of the visual
- 6:28cues and just because of the like male gaziness of this series in general.
- 6:35It's just there and it's not. I don't think it's going away, but
- 6:42um, the thing with Charlis is that he is He's a really different type
- 6:51to me. Like Spandam was was he was desperately trying to prove something,
- 7:00whereas Charles doesn't feel the need to really prove anything. His power is self
- 7:06evident, and Spandam felt extremely insecure, like all of his viciousness and his
- 7:15cruelty seemed to come from a place of wanting everyone else to acknowledge how powerful
- 7:21he was. And it was really a bizarre thing to watch because he was
- 7:27surrounded by people who had all kinds of power, whether just being highly trained
- 7:30or having eaten devil fruits, but he himself never really wanted those fruits for
- 7:38himself. He just wanted to employ the people who had those abilities. And
- 7:46I was always just sort of surprised by it that it was like he would
- 7:48rather be the manager. But in a way, it does make some sense
- 7:53that it's almost like him acknowledging I wouldn't put this devil fruit to as good
- 7:58use as these dudes who are already amazing fighters probably would. With Charles,
- 8:05it's there's a real sense of y'all know already. I don't have to prove
- 8:13anything to you. You have to prove you're worth talking to to me.
- 8:18You have to prove your worth keeping alive to me, And anything that I
- 8:26do is purely for my own entertainment and to like there's a real energy for
- 8:33me of to keep away the boredom. It feels all the time like he's
- 8:39on the verge of being bored enough that he will summon somebody in and just
- 8:43have them beaten for entertainment. There's nothing about it that seems like I'm trying
- 8:50to exercise power over you, because I enjoy the feeling of the power.
- 8:56It's the power is taken so for granted and it is so like completely part
- 9:03of who he is, and it's unquestioned that he deserves it and will always
- 9:09have it. That the edge of almost desperation. I think that Spandom had
- 9:16he doesn't have, and that complacency is what is so galling to watch.
- 9:26There's no moment where he seems to really think he's going to suffer any kind
- 9:31of consequence and even if he were to, like you know, I am
- 9:37really wondering, what's gonna happen to lose me? Now? He threw a
- 9:39punch and it is very satisfying to watch. Don't get me wrong, I'm
- 9:43really glad. But on the other hand, what's going to happen now?
- 9:48You know what is what is the cost that we now have to pay for
- 9:52the pleasure of this very brief moment of punching this guy? U Sarah F
- 10:00M says, really span him and Charlis are the same type of so funny,
- 10:05so if from saying the exact opposite of what I'm saying, just one
- 10:07has actual power and they want the other only has a little power and wants
- 10:11to kiss enough ass to get more while abusing what little amount of it he
- 10:16has. Yeah, see, I don't feel like they're the same type.
- 10:20Like, I get what you're saying. But because Charlis was born with this
- 10:24power, it has turned him into a really like his A person in Spana's
- 10:30position who actually has a lot of power and gains it doing what Spannham has
- 10:35done is going to have a different energy than somebody like born into it and
- 10:41the whole like charlis just taking it for granted, not only that nothing's gonna
- 10:46fucking happen to him, that he be treated like a god. Everybody out
- 10:52here is literally falling on their faces when they see him. The fact that
- 10:56somebody was walking past him with a fucking they there was a person on the
- 11:05edge of death, and he expected all of these like EMTs basically to still
- 11:13take the time to kneel and put their entire lives on hold, just because
- 11:16he happened to be walking by, And really was I think genuinely outraged that
- 11:24they didn't do it. What is that like? What is it like to
- 11:30really feel like you have the right to not only ask, but expect that
- 11:39of people. And I'm not I'm not going to try in front with everybody
- 11:45and pretend that I don't have my own problems with entitlement. I do.
- 11:50And they'll sneak up on me sometimes and I'll notice and be like, whoa,
- 11:54oh, what is that? Sometimes not in time to have stopped the
- 12:00aavier. I may not notice for years. But there are certain types of
- 12:05entitlement that I have never felt, because I have never been in the position
- 12:09of certain people and watching from the outside, it's a wild experience to really
- 12:16see how differently people can live their lives, how differently we can move through
- 12:22the world depending on what we have been taught. Is our due, you
- 12:26know, So let's let's I'm talking about this like all in hypotheticals, and
- 12:35I haven't really like gotten into the meat of the episode because we have a
- 12:39lot of stuff going on here. The beginning of the Human Auction begins starts
- 12:46off with the Vice Admiral Lufy's grandfather who is having tea and cookies with I
- 12:54think it's cookies with some dude like a marine officer, and he is telling
- 13:01him about how the guy, what is his name is it? I keep
- 13:07wanting to say Hadley, but he goes by Dark King and it's the woman's
- 13:13husband that they were just talking to, who she says is like a hundred
- 13:16times stronger than Lufy. The thing that the Admiral is guessing is going on
- 13:22here. He thinks that this dude wrecked up some gambling debts and sold himself
- 13:31into slavery to pay them off, which he says this in such a way
- 13:37that you know, it feels like this happens a lot, And I can't
- 13:43imagine being as of being that powerful and feeling like and this is me kind
- 13:52of telling on myself, but honestly, in a world like this where ross
- 13:58strength can mean so much, if you have that kind of power and you
- 14:03wind up getting into gambling debt, I feel like you've got some very brute
- 14:07strength means of getting out of that debt. So if he is not taking
- 14:13those options, there's a sort of ethics to him that's interesting. You know,
- 14:20he feels like he should pay it back. I don't know. And
- 14:26he says for this officer not to tell anybody that he's there. Raley,
- 14:37that's his name. He says. He may be older. But even if
- 14:41we don't like come at him kind of carefully, we're gonna lose so many
- 14:46dudes, so we're not going to handle it that way. And I I'm
- 14:56trying to remember the name of the series. The writer was Mark Lawrence and
- 15:00I covered this for spoil me. It was such a wild series. But
- 15:05the first line of the first book is something like, and I'm paraphrasing here,
- 15:11but it's something like, when attempting to kill a nun, it is
- 15:20important to bring with you an army of sufficient size. That's the first line,
- 15:26which I have got to say, I think is the best opening line
- 15:31of anything I have ever read, because it makes you ask thirty questions immediately.
- 15:39You want to kill a nun and you need to bring it an arm
- 15:43Did you say army? Is that right? That can't be right? And
- 15:48you know, as you go through the series you start to be like,
- 15:50oh, yeah, no, that makes that makes sense actually, But yeah,
- 15:58this whole thing is so the proportions of what we're looking at in terms
- 16:03of our I don't even want to say like adversaries, because really isn't against
- 16:11our crew, at least not yet. But we're dealing with levels of power
- 16:17here that are a completely different echelon than anything that we have seen so far.
- 16:25And the tricky thing about the way that we're ramping things up here,
- 16:33and I'm just gonna like kind of be honest with you guys about this,
- 16:38even though I recognize that to a degree, I have got to suspend my
- 16:41disbelief on certain things. So you know, I'm willing to do that,
- 16:45and I will do that, but I do want to make it clear where
- 16:51I'm coming from. I feel like you start to get very tricky when somebody
- 16:56is supposed to be so bad at and then they get defeated by our people
- 17:04who have only seemed to level up a little bit, like and that was
- 17:10sort of the brilliant thing that they did with Maria, because he basically over
- 17:15extended himself. So even though he was really powerful and probably could have done
- 17:22some serious damage and ruined their lives, then he goes too far and it's
- 17:27self defeating instead, which is a really neat get out of jail free trick.
- 17:33And then we've got that weird dude who shows up and instead of having
- 17:38to fight him, all Zoro has to do is make a deal with him.
- 17:45So we've got two very tricksy ways to have people who are allegedly unthinkable
- 17:53high powered adversaries, and they both are treated in such a way that we
- 17:59can sort of step around that, and we don't really have to confront that
- 18:04with Raley because it doesn't look like we're going to have a confrontation with him
- 18:10or going to be dealing with other people. We still may be able to
- 18:14get around that, you know. But I am really curious because there has
- 18:19been a sort of a weird treatment of what Lufy's leveling up has been you
- 18:29know, we've talked about like first gear, second gear, third gear in
- 18:34very abstract terms. It's never really made clear at all what that means,
- 18:42where he learned it, how he figured out how to do any of this
- 18:47stuff. He pulls things out as if he's used them before, and it's
- 18:52a surprise to us, But there's a sort of energy to it, as
- 18:56if there were fights we haven't seen where he was like practicing this technique and
- 19:00it's not. I don't believe that's the case, unless it was happening during
- 19:06one of the filler episodes that I haven't watched yet. I've watched a few
- 19:11of them, by the way, I just wanted to mention that here.
- 19:14But I'm really curious if we're leveling up on so many of the outside players.
- 19:22Our friends have got to progress in order for me to believe it at
- 19:26all that they're coming out victorious ever, And I really hope if we do
- 19:33that, they are going to be better at explaining how that's happening than they
- 19:40have been. And I don't know if maybe it's just me who gives a
- 19:45shit about that and that's why they didn't bother doing it with Lufy. I
- 19:48think that you guys have been talking about how I think when I shared my
- 19:53sort of feelings on the whole thing with his jumping into like second gear or
- 19:59whatever was he did, some of you mentioned it might have been Dragon ball
- 20:03Z, but you were talking about how like there's some series where it's tons
- 20:10of training montages and that Oda doesn't have the same interest in depicting that kind
- 20:15of thing, which I really do understand, I mean to a degree,
- 20:21like how do you make that interesting? But if you don't want it to
- 20:25be through training, if you want it to be like a happenstance that he
- 20:27discovers there's a new thing he can do, I would at least like that.
- 20:32I would at least like to see Lufy stumble on being able to progress
- 20:36to doing something new and being like, Wow, what's this? How did
- 20:38this happen? Instead of him just busting it out in the middle of a
- 20:42battle like it's an established thing. And that's sort of what they did with
- 20:47Sanji. You know, he gets so angry when he finds out that this
- 20:51guy's going to try and forcibly marry Nami. He burst into flames. And
- 20:55now from then on. It sort of seems like he's just able to do
- 20:59that and able to incorporate fire into his fighting technique. Is it a great
- 21:06explanation? Not really, but it's an explanation. I'll take it. It's
- 21:10definitely something, you know, it feels like we've gotten origin here with Lufy
- 21:15because he's the main character. It's particularly peculiar to do it the way it's
- 21:22been done. So I am just gonna put that out there that I have
- 21:26my reservations on how this has been handled so far, and I really hope
- 21:30it's not just more of that because it's very unsatisfying to me. And like
- 21:36I said, we don't need there to be tons of training, you know,
- 21:38I don't need to have the Rocky theme playing while Lufy turns himself into
- 21:44a hot water bottle successfully and unsuccessfully. By turns, it's not a requirement
- 21:48to handle it that way. But I just don't want to feel like I
- 21:52missed an episode or something when it happens. Let's see Garps rice Crackers says
- 22:00Gus rice Crackers. Okay, I think he's drinking green tea as well,
- 22:04though that is very green green tea. But nevertheless, Sarah fhim says,
- 22:08Plus, it's made pretty clear Maria has been a lazy bum the last decade
- 22:12or so and not really keeping himself in peak shape. I didn't realize that,
- 22:18Sarah him. I'll be honest, because you're saying it's made pretty clear.
- 22:22I don't think I noticed that. Like I know that he's shallot shaped,
- 22:26but I assumed that was just his shape. You know, the using
- 22:30fire started back in and his lobby with diablade Jombay did it, I don't
- 22:37remember. Odah's explanation is simply that it's an expression of the heat of his
- 22:41passionate heart. Oh with um with Sanji right, not loofy when in his
- 22:48hot water bottle technique. I don't remember it at and his lobby, but
- 22:52I believe you and his lobby. Sanji is just out of it for so
- 22:57much of the time that I've kind of forgotten what role he played. I'm
- 23:00going to be straight with y'all. He you know, winds up running off
- 23:06and doing some other crucial stuff. But I the main players for that fight
- 23:11that I'm thinking of, Sanji isn't one of them. No offense Sanji,
- 23:17so this like starting things off. I was wondering if we were going to
- 23:22get the Marines dealing with really in these two episodes, but it does not
- 23:27happen yet. We do get eventually an announcement that starts circulating through all of
- 23:34the different groves that Ace is going to be executed. And it's a really
- 23:42weird thing because I think they're doing, like, correct me if I'm wrong,
- 23:49guys, Is Ace's execution happening here or is it simply that the news
- 23:56is traveling from another play too here. I felt like it was the way
- 24:03that it was being talked about. It seemed like it was going to be
- 24:06happening on one of the groves here, And I don't know if that's incorrect,
- 24:14but it's kind of funny if Lufy was sort of like Ace wouldn't want
- 24:17me to save him. Ace will be fine to then accidentally find himself in
- 24:22the middle of the exact space that's his brother is going to be executed.
- 24:30But yeah, so let's go to the Human Auction. It's a very big,
- 24:37sort of stadium like building. It kind of looks like a temple from
- 24:41the outside, and inside it really looks like a huge theater, like an
- 24:49amphitheater. It's a sunken stage and all of these seats, and there is
- 24:56the master of ceremonies. For this is a guy named Disco who he is
- 25:06a real He's called mister Disco. He's got very long white hair with bangs
- 25:11which do not become him. You shouldn't have gone with the bangs. He
- 25:15is wearing a long skirt and coat and they are purple with like green sort
- 25:25of scallop patterns, a very roundy sort of yellow hat with big orange flowers
- 25:33on it. The only thing that's like vaguely disco like is his star shaped
- 25:40sunglasses. But for somebody named mister Disco, he really isn't giving disco at
- 25:45all. I when I heard his name was mister Disco, I was sort
- 25:48of expecting the camera to pull back and get at least like one of those
- 25:53seventies prom tuxes with the like ruffled front or something. At best, I
- 26:00would have liked a bell bottom type fitting outfit, you know, like something
- 26:07kind of approaching, maybe an Elvis impersonator outfit. Or you could have even
- 26:12done like one of those high waisted black pants with the shirt tucked in but
- 26:17unbuttoned all the way down, like a Saturday night fever kind of look at
- 26:21a pompadour. But yeah, this mister disco is really to me, Like
- 26:27the vibe I'm getting off him is hippie much more so. So let's see
- 26:38they're saying it. They don't think it's specified. Gus says, there's a
- 26:41movie, so it's not Cannon where Lufi discovers Gear two by something falling on
- 26:47him and it compressing his legs in the same way. I'm not sure how
- 26:49he actually discovered it, though. With Gear three, I could totally see
- 26:52him just coming up with it on the spot, like, lo, what
- 26:56if I just blow up my hand like a balloon and it makes my punch
- 27:00or something like that. Yeah, and see this is the thing. It
- 27:03is believable, but it's not done. And that's what I think is so
- 27:08strange. There's a million ways that you could have Lufy figure out how to
- 27:11do these other gears and having him just be like, hah, what if
- 27:17I did this thing? I would be down to hear him sort of be
- 27:21like, you know what, I'm gonna try something new and just goof around
- 27:23and he comes up with this like really effective new technique. I would actually
- 27:30enjoy spending a little bit more time with Lufy when he's like fucking around in
- 27:33that sense, because I think it would be it would suit his character a
- 27:40lot. But it's just a thing that's already here and ready to go.
- 27:47The thing with the movie. It's interesting that they felt, Okay, we're
- 27:52going to do a movie, and at least whoever's writing this does believe we
- 27:56should explain it somehow, somebody out there felt like it was worth focusing on
- 28:03all bit So anyway, this is when we get the introduction of how this
- 28:12whole ceremony is going to go. All of the different slaves are being like
- 28:17focused on, and there is a real vibe to this of we are going
- 28:25to rub it in the audience's face as much as possible, how utterly awful
- 28:33all these people are that are bidding. There's a couple in the audience.
- 28:38This guy's talking about how he's going to get more eye candy for his collection.
- 28:41This lady talking about how the male slaves she had broke down after only
- 28:48ten months and she wants somebody that's going to be more reliable. And all
- 28:52of it is punctuated by people like discussing every person who's brought onto the stage
- 29:00in very dehumanizing terms. Mister Disco discusses each of them by calling them it
- 29:07and you know, occasionally he's using like regular pronouns, but there's a lot
- 29:12of like, oh, this is an item that's coming up for auction,
- 29:17you know, and each of the different people who comes up. We've got
- 29:22this guy who is his name is Byron, and he's very brooding and has
- 29:34like long curling hair, and there's just a very like clear Lord Byron thing
- 29:40that we're doing here, which is really funny because I read somewhere that Lord
- 29:44Byron was actually not very attractive, and he had his portraits like redone and
- 29:52then circulated his favorites so that people who didn't meet him would think him a
- 29:57lot more beautiful than he really was, which in a time where selfies weren't
- 30:03a thing, that sounds like a pretty great way to go. Why not
- 30:07just catfish everybody who cares? And so the bidding begins, all of these
- 30:15people like start throwing their money around. Eventually there are some folks who were
- 30:19like, ah, why did I go with that one? I should have
- 30:22waited because apparently, like they get a little program that tells them what's on
- 30:26the docket, but I don't think that all of them read it. Sanji
- 30:32gets it, so he knows that some things are coming, but they also
- 30:34aren't accompanied by photos and stuff. So if you think you're gonna like one
- 30:38person better, and then they bring out somebody who's like, maybe hotter,
- 30:42you're just kind of shit out of luck. And so we get a bidding
- 30:47more that's happening here, and eventually the camera pulls away and we get inside
- 30:52mister Disco's head and find out that he has got some plants in the audience
- 31:00that are artificially driving up the prices of things by bidding on them excessively,
- 31:06which is like, as you guys know, this is not an unheard of
- 31:10tactic at all, but it is a very risky proposition because if that person
- 31:15can't match you, you are putting yourself in the position of having to pay
- 31:22for it unexpectedly yourself, which really sucks. Maybe you can recoup your losses
- 31:30behind closed doors when that person approaches you later and it's like, look,
- 31:33I really would like to take that off your hands, but yeah, let's
- 31:38see, sorry, guys, Saraphim says. He mentions that he figured out
- 31:44GEAR two by watching CP nine US shave. He's pretty much doing the same
- 31:48thing they do to get a quick burst of speed, but because his body
- 31:52is rubber, his heart and blood vessels can withstand the increased blood pressure without
- 31:56exploding like a normal humans would if they use it for more than a second
- 32:00or two. I don't remember that at all. I'm going to be straight
- 32:07up with you, Sarah Fim. That feels like complete news to me.
- 32:13Gus is saying, Sarah f M, he figured out how to move very
- 32:16quickly while in Gear two by imitating shave, But Gear two itself is not
- 32:21based on anything that CP nine is doing at all. It's something he can
- 32:23only can do because he has a rubber body. Oh that makes more sense,
- 32:30because, yeah, Sarah Fim, your explanation. I was like very
- 32:35hungry for and searching for an explanation, and so this not ringing any bells
- 32:42at all was surprising me. But I think what Gus is saying makes some
- 32:45sense, because otherwise I really feel like I would have retained that information since
- 32:52I wanted it and I was asking the question a lot when that episode first
- 32:54happened, and nobody offered that explanation. So I, yeah, I think
- 33:00Gus is right on this one. But anyway, so as all of this
- 33:07is happening, our friends are trying to rush to get to the auction before
- 33:13Kami gets put on the block. And it's a very funny sequence because Zoro
- 33:20is unknowingly heading in the correct direction because he thinks that everybody is going to
- 33:24be at Grove one, So even though he has struck off by himself,
- 33:29he is still like on the job and just doesn't realize it. The problem
- 33:35is that eventually he like, despite being at Grove two and us, thinking
- 33:39that he is one hundred percent almost there, this is going to be perfect.
- 33:45He then finds himself at like Grove twelve unexpectedly, and he thinks that
- 33:51some people gave him bad directions. But I maintain that they gave him perfectly
- 33:54fine directions and he just went the wrong way. I don't know. They
- 34:00did act very sketchy when they saw him, and he asks why, and
- 34:04they're like, because you beat the shit out of us, And I think
- 34:06that's probably true, you know. But what winds up happening with him is
- 34:10that Lufy is passing above and spots him and just grabs him up with his
- 34:16rubber arm and pulls Zoro onto the flying fish that he is riding, which
- 34:22Zoro is like annoyed by, but I was just sort of like, dude,
- 34:25he's doing you a favor because everybody knows you don't know where you're going.
- 34:30You yourself have just admitted that, like you're basically lost, So yeah,
- 34:36let him give you a quick uber. It's fine. And Zoro there
- 34:40was like an almost confrontation with some guys and they are about to fight him,
- 34:49and this dude, he's like, do you know where Grove one is?
- 34:52We'll tell y'all right, but I don't think you're getting there. Your
- 34:57bounty is mine. And this guy lifts his sword and Zoro just raises his
- 35:02eyes and looks at him, and the guy backs up and drops his sword,
- 35:07and everybody else in the circle surrounding him also backs up. And I
- 35:14really really enjoyed this moment. I am going to continue making my comparisons to
- 35:19Cradle, but what I felt from this scene was like, this is the
- 35:23vibe of when you unveil your spirit and let somebody know that you're like under
- 35:27a lord level. This is a moment of Look, I was trying to
- 35:30be play, but if you want to know who you're fucking with, I
- 35:34will gladly tell you because none of us wants this. I can't, I
- 35:37don't have time. So so all of this, you know, we've got
- 35:44Oosop going off and figuring out who it was that captured Kamy. That's when
- 35:50they find out that it was Peterman. Just it's he's so clearly Peter pan
- 35:55Peterman, come on, that is really funny. And Sanji is riding with
- 36:04I can't remember his name now, pretty boy, and that dude seemed to
- 36:08know where they were heading from the beginning. And so even though Sanji is
- 36:12frustrated over the fact that they are traveling a lot slower than everybody else because
- 36:16they were heading in the right direction since the beginning, this dude is very
- 36:21confident they're going to be the first ones to arrive. But it turns out
- 36:25that Chopper is already there, so sorry about it. Sanji is unreasonably mad
- 36:31at him. And it makes sense that he would know, because Sanji says,
- 36:38like, oh, kidnapper intuition, and I was sort of like,
- 36:42well, they were planning on selling Kamie, so yeah, I guess he
- 36:45would know probably where the human auction is going to be, so the crew
- 36:54that we have that wind up going inside the auction house. We've got Frankie
- 37:00Sangi Chopper in a sort of like in his larger form, Nami, and
- 37:12there is like a weird little humpty dumpty looking guard outside, really really strange
- 37:17looking dude. And of course we have Hatchie and the Starfish and the whole
- 37:29like what they're planning on doing going in here once they realize that there's really
- 37:37no force that they can use, because it's Frankie's instinct to do the equivalent
- 37:45of pulling a gun, and Hatchie has to be like, dude, you
- 37:47are going to ruin us if you do that. You can't not only are
- 37:52you going to get in so much trouble if you fuck with any of these
- 37:57celestial beings. All so, it's very good odds that inside Camy has one
- 38:02of those exploding collars on her, so you'll be doing more harm than good.
- 38:07It's potentially like what you're doing could kill her. So he does back
- 38:12off, but Nami is the one who's like, all right, look what
- 38:19we've got to do is beat them at their own game. They're selling her,
- 38:23right, fine, We're going to buy her and they do have like
- 38:30a fair amount of money, so this looks like it's gonna work. It's
- 38:36seeming like this is a good plan. We have a really quick like I'm
- 38:42not going to dwell on this because you know, I have limited time here.
- 38:45But there is a pirate captain named La Cuba who he's got a very
- 38:51sort of when I picture the pirate Blackbeard, this is the look that I
- 38:57was imagining. And he's pulled away and he is really really distraught, like
- 39:04every nobody wants to be here, but a lot of them are sort of
- 39:08suffering in silence, and they're angry and clearly, you know, you can
- 39:13see it all over their faces that they would murder every person here if they
- 39:16could. But he is the one that's expressing the most outright fear and genuinely
- 39:22like, please don't do this. I can't like that. I just can't
- 39:28do it. And once he's brought out on stage, his distress is really
- 39:32like he's animated in such a way that I was like, oh my god,
- 39:36this is really sad, and he ends up bleeding and collapsing, and
- 39:43eventually Sanji explains that he bit off his own tongue so that he would bleed
- 39:53to death and not have to die as a slave, which I think I
- 39:59asked whether or not that works, and people in the comments assured me that
- 40:02it does, which I really like. It's a really fascinating thing to me,
- 40:08how and it's morbid, you know, but like the kind of the
- 40:16kind of desperation you would have to feel to do that. If you're going
- 40:22to kill yourself, there's a lot of different ways to accomplish that, and
- 40:27there are means that are much more like requiring of a certain type of willpower
- 40:32than others. There are some where, you know, if you're just going
- 40:37to pull a trigger or drink something, but it's a kind of like you
- 40:42do it really quickly. There's no immediate pain necessarily. It's either over before
- 40:47you know it, or it's the it sets in after and you could potentially
- 40:54undo it, depending And then they're like, other way is that I have?
- 41:00The one that I always think of is Elliott Smith who stabbed himself in
- 41:05the heart, which is just a truly like I can't imagine that kind of
- 41:10suicide, Like there are just so many simpler ways, and to do it
- 41:15that way is just there's a viciousness to it that I'm like, wow,
- 41:22and biting your own tongue off the way you've got to psych yourself up to
- 41:29even be able to physically do that, that is really scary to imagine being
- 41:38in the headspace where you can even pull that off. It's just so unthinkable
- 41:44to me, you know, And I mean, I'm grateful that it's unthinkable,
- 41:49but I really was just startled that this is even a thing, and
- 41:52I shouldn't be because that people have been forced to like endure horrific shit,
- 42:00And it makes sense that some people have figured out a way, you know,
- 42:04when you're bound and you don't have access to like weapons or anything,
- 42:08you don't have the freedom of movement, finding a way to do it,
- 42:14but that is just so hideous, Like you're attempting to cause this rapid bleeding,
- 42:22maybe choke on your own blood and potentially die that way, choke on
- 42:25your tongue that's loosen your throat, maybe just blood loss, like there's a
- 42:30few ways that could happen. I mean, oh my god, you guys,
- 42:35that really got to me. That was awful. So the whole way
- 42:43that this like winds up going down, our friends have gathered around to try
- 42:49and buy it Kami, and I really appreciated that. Hatchie and Starfish,
- 42:57they both are so touched at the fact that the crew is going to give
- 43:00all of their money up, like at whatever it takes. Nami is essentially
- 43:07like money is no object. She's a friend. We're gonna do what we
- 43:10fucking need to do. And these guys are just deeply, deeply grateful,
- 43:16and there's a real assumption that she that we may not even need to spend
- 43:24all of that, that that should be more than enough. And there's I
- 43:30won't say like a complacency about it, but there is a certainty, you
- 43:32know. And then here comes fucking Charless and he's arrived really late because his
- 43:42slave was walking too slowly. Everybody has to avert their eyes and be really
- 43:47like, you know, in awe of him, and he sits down.
- 43:53They unveil Camy and he immediately bids five hundred million berries and it is just
- 44:04just so out of their price range. For lack of a better way of
- 44:09saying it, I mean, they all are stunned because the bid it's not
- 44:20even like they could potentially raise this in any amount of time. It's more
- 44:24than double all they have, and it was nothing for him. Charlos is
- 44:32just excited because she's a mermaid and now he has one, and it's just
- 44:37I acquired this new toy. And we find out, just to add to
- 44:45the gross out factor of what he's doing here, that the tank he would
- 44:51store her in is filled with piranhas and he plans to put her in there
- 45:00and watch her attempt to escape them, and his like bodyguard, I think,
- 45:08says something about how you know she's not going to last long, and
- 45:13he replies, it'll be fun to watch her try. I mean truly,
- 45:22you guys, that is so I know that it's all emphasised, like exaggerated
- 45:30to make us hate him even more. But this isn't a thing. That
- 45:36isn't real. You know, people just like throwing away ridiculous sums of money
- 45:40to demean someone else for a very temporary enjoyment. That is not you know.
- 45:46I just I really didn't think I could hate him more than I did,
- 45:52and I do. And that's his that's an opening bid. This mister
- 46:00Disco says, what's open with a starting bid of and he interrupts to say
- 46:07five hundred million, and even mister Disco is unprepared. Is truly not really
- 46:12sure what to say, because he had not thought this was going to go
- 46:15this way at all. There's no moment where anybody is even considering outbidding him.
- 46:22I don't know that anybody would even have the money to try, So
- 46:27he winds up with Kami. There's a long sequence of like the gavel falling,
- 46:32and it almost feeling as if maybe we're going to have a moment of
- 46:37intervention where somebody is going to jump in and say no, wait, and
- 46:43he won't have the chance to like drop the gavel all the way, and
- 46:47that will mean the sale isn't official. It does drop, though it is
- 46:53official. And as this is all like going on, we've got the other,
- 47:01like you know, formidable captains in the audience. Some of them are
- 47:07taking off. I think it's kid who finally gets up and leaves. I'm
- 47:12trying to remember the name of the one that's got the really short hair,
- 47:17and I think he's dressed in a lot of black and white. I can't
- 47:20remember, but he's the one that kind of like looks the most normal.
- 47:24Honestly, he looks like the kind of dude that works at a skate shop
- 47:29or something. And all of them are sort of looking around for Lufy,
- 47:36and there's a sense of like maybe we're waiting to start some shit, but
- 47:40I don't know why they would. And at this point Lufy crashes through the
- 47:50wall on the Flying Fish with Zoro, and we find out here that Zoro
- 47:55is not like he has no idea what's going on, because he still thinks
- 48:04we're going into Grove one, which is where the ship is. We're just
- 48:07going back to the ship, and he has not caught onto the fact that,
- 48:12like, we have a whole other emergency happening here. Sir oh Gust
- 48:17says Trafalgar law. That's right, And I'm looking at him now, you
- 48:22guys. So he's got that little like chin beard, double pierced ears,
- 48:27really long sideburns. He's got like that hat that's almost like a kangle hat
- 48:32or almost like a bucket hat. I don't know, tattoos. And I'm
- 48:37realizing who he's reminding me of. And he's giving a little bit Trent from
- 48:43Daria, who I don't know of anybody attracted to men who was my age
- 48:51when that show was airing, who did not have a crush on Trent.
- 48:54Now I can see him for the like loser he is, but I thought
- 49:00Trent was the hottest and was like, just you know, for Trent.
- 49:06So this arrival with Lufy, this is when we see kid like turn and
- 49:12be like, oh, well, here he is. And I don't think
- 49:15they fully appreciate what focus Lufy has on his objective, because he just starts
- 49:22sprinting down the stairs and it's like Kmie, I've been looking for you everywhere,
- 49:27and he's attempting to interfere, and as he does, Hatchie runs after
- 49:34him and tries to stop him, grabbing him by both his shoulders, and
- 49:39it's not enough. Lufi is continuing to run and just dragging Hatchie behind him,
- 49:45and as he continues to run, Hotchie gets kind of desperate and without
- 49:53considering what's going on here, his other arms come out from underneath is big,
- 50:00like he's wearing most of what looks like a letter jacket and grabs Lufy
- 50:06to slow him, and somebody spots it and is like, oh my god,
- 50:08he's a fishman. And as Lufi continues to run, Hochi stops and
- 50:15is like, oh shit, I've completely given myself away. Lufy, for
- 50:22his part, is absolutely not noticing any of this happening. All he's thinking
- 50:28about is Kmie, and he is just continuing to sprint flat out, while
- 50:31poor Hatchie is just sort of like fumbling standing on the stairs, looking around
- 50:37and panic, not really knowing what he's going to do, and all of
- 50:44these guards are coming to block Lufy from getting on the stage, while the
- 50:47people in the audience are accusing Hachie of like carrying diseases or being here just
- 50:57to like stir up trouble, go back to see you freak get out of
- 51:01here already. We don't want you here, and everybody starts throwing shit at
- 51:06him. It's a very like I Am not an animal kind of moment,
- 51:10except he is a little bit of an animal. The Starfish runs down and
- 51:16is like, dude, you really have got to get the fuck out of
- 51:19here, to which Hatchie is like, I'm not leaving without Kamie. Why
- 51:22would I do that? And I had forgotten. Sanji doesn't know about the
- 51:28whole like, you know, discrimination against the fish people, So he's up
- 51:34there going why are they reacting like this? What's the deal? And Chopper
- 51:39says, why are they like that? They're no different from us, which
- 51:45is really funny because like they are different from you, but that's fine,
- 51:49except that they aren't that different from Chopper because he's also partially an animal.
- 51:53But yeah, it's all of this is like really quickly brought to a halt
- 52:00by somebody pulling the trigger of a gun and we see all of this blood
- 52:07and Hatchie goes down and it turns out that it's this fucking asshole, Saint
- 52:15Charles, who shot him, and he apparently does not think Hatchie is dead
- 52:22because he's very jubilant that he's now got another slave that was totally free,
- 52:32and also that he was able to like apprehend this guy himself. This wasn't
- 52:38somebody caught by a slave catcher. This is somebody who he managed to shoot
- 52:45himself, which is like a lot more of a trophy. And he begins
- 52:50just prancing about talking about how he did it. He did it, he
- 52:54took down a fishman, and some lady in the audience says, thank goodness,
- 53:00someone shot it. It's just really, guys, it's awful. I
- 53:07hate this. And poor Kamie, of course, is like she's in this
- 53:13tank that looks like a giant Christmas ornament, really and she's just pounding on
- 53:17the glass like there's nothing to be done. She's just sitting there watching them
- 53:22shoot her friend. You know, like I just I really felt for her
- 53:28in this moment because she's being forced to witness at all and she is utterly
- 53:32helpless. So this is when fucking Charlie says, I shot it myself.
- 53:39It's free. That means I can have it for free. An octopus for
- 53:44me, an octopus for free. And he is so excited that he is
- 53:52not noticing the expression on Lufy's face as he approached. And Lufy is stopped
- 54:01by Hotchi, who is still alive, and there's this monologue that was really
- 54:10really well delivered by the voice actor. I was really impressed by this,
- 54:17you guys, because like, there are a lot of moments in this show
- 54:22where the soft music begins to play and somebody is saying something that's supposed to
- 54:27be like really moving or kind of profound, and sometimes it works and sometimes
- 54:35it really doesn't. And that's the tricky part of like using that kind of
- 54:39music is that I'll find myself getting resentful, feeling like I'm being manipulated by
- 54:45the music, and I'll just be like stop it, knock it off with
- 54:47this, It'll be more profound if you didn't underline it so hard. But
- 54:52this moment where Hatchi is talking to him, because this voice actor just not
- 55:00it out of the park so bad, I was like, this is really
- 55:01hitting, and he basically is like, first of all, don't forget that
- 55:07you promised me you were not going to fuck with the celestial dragons, even
- 55:14if they killed somebody. So just that's my number one. Remember that.
- 55:21Secondly, I have done some fucked up things in my life and I agreed
- 55:27to help you all because I wanted to make things right with Nami. But
- 55:32I kind of deserve what I'm getting. I didn't really face the consequences of
- 55:40all of the horrible things I've done. I was trying to make amends with
- 55:45Nami. It wasn't much, but I just thought I could do what I
- 55:50could do, And at this point I fucked that up and I'm sorry about
- 55:58it. And he says I wanted to do something right for once and show
- 56:05Nami how sorry I am, and Nami starts to get really emotional because she
- 56:10didn't realize this was such a motivating factor for me for him. For me,
- 56:15that feels like a real Freudian slip. But I'm not going to examine
- 56:19that at all. And he says all I've ever done in my life is
- 56:23cause trouble. And I really felt for him on this, you guys,
- 56:30like I just truly that there was something about this that hit really hard,
- 56:37the feeling of just I know, I fucked up. I'm trying to make
- 56:40it right, and even in doing that, I fuck up and make things
- 56:44worse. Like Jesus Christ, I should probably just check out. I'm not
- 56:49making it better. I'm not helping. What's the point. Of course Charles
- 56:52has to chime in here and say, oh my god, shut the fuck
- 56:58up. And he pulls his gun and is like, I'm going to shoot
- 57:01you again, and Lufy tells him to back the fuck off, and he's
- 57:06like, well, I guess I'll just shoot you since you're talking to me
- 57:09like that, because how fucking dare you? And Lufie begins to climb the
- 57:15stairs again. Even after this like heart to heart with Hotchie, where Hotchie's
- 57:21like, you remember your promise, Lufy is kind of going, yeah,
- 57:23you know what fuck promises. He's closing the gap between him and Charlus as
- 57:31everybody is realizing who he is and that he is dead ass serious about doing
- 57:37this thing, and Charlos pulls the trigger two more times and Lufy just dodges
- 57:43it. It's nothing you barely even notice, you know, like, and
- 57:49then Lufy punches Charlos in the face, and the punch is such that the
- 58:00animation style goes from full color line drawings to this very like sketchy sort of
- 58:08style in black and white. It honestly looks, hello, dope. I
- 58:15really really liked this. It's also funny because, like Lufy in his regular
- 58:21animation, occasionally he'll be portrayed with maybe like a six pack or something,
- 58:28but they never really make him super muscular. He's rangy and lanky, and
- 58:34his whole thing is how much he can stretch. Muscles aren't much of a
- 58:38thing unless he's eating a hundred shadows. But in the animation, where it's
- 58:45like this sketch drawing, he is jacked all to hell, like he's so
- 58:51ripped, and when his fist makes contact, this guy's face basically caves in
- 58:59entirely, and Lufy's face the like growl that he is making. This is
- 59:07a level of rage from him that I don't feel we have ever seen,
- 59:13and I may be wrong. There may be a point you could bring back
- 59:16to and you're like, no, here's another point. This just hits different.
- 59:22And I mean that in the punniest way possible. It feels like this
- 59:28guy hit a particular button and Lufy has lost his entire mind, and Homeboy
- 59:37just goes fucking flying. There's smoke, Lufy takes a moment to just stare
- 59:45after him and then to be continued, and that is the end of the
- 59:49episode. And I was just like, oh shit, I don't know what
- 59:55happens now, you know, like it feels like this was a mistake,
- 1:00:00but it was very satisfying mistakes, so I can't really be too upset about
- 1:00:05it, you know what I'm saying. Sarah him says the most satisfying punch
- 1:00:09in anime truly. Like I just it's like the charless thing. It's not
- 1:00:16just his attitude either. His animation is the like he is first of all,
- 1:00:24very fat, but fat in a very slovenly sort of way. There's
- 1:00:30you know, different ways that you can go when you draw somebody fat,
- 1:00:35and the way that it's done with him is he's like very sloppy. He
- 1:00:40has the running nose, he's got like five o'clock shadow. There's a sense
- 1:00:45of like, I don't know if it's animated this way, but I imagine
- 1:00:49him having stains on his clothes kind of thing. And there's just a feeling
- 1:00:53of somebody who any sense of hygiene coming from servants who wash him because he
- 1:01:01doesn't lift a finger to do any of it himself, and combined with his
- 1:01:06facial expressions where he has this really like I'm going to lift my eyebrows but
- 1:01:09barely open my eyes because i am going to look supercilious, but I'm not
- 1:01:15going to put that much effort into it. The whole the lazy is not
- 1:01:22like an adequate word for what this guy is like. It's he is truly
- 1:01:31so slovenly. And I just the way that he is like demanding things of
- 1:01:40everyone around him when he could barely be bothered to keep breathing. It's really
- 1:01:45remarkable. And yeah, Sarah Fhimsays writing animation voice, the fucking voice actor
- 1:01:53does such a good job with him, so good. And I've mentioned in
- 1:01:58the last episode how there's a moment where he's just making like mouth noises,
- 1:02:04but it's all like and a lot of times those little mouth noises for different
- 1:02:10characters. It feels kind of like I don't see them making these weird noises.
- 1:02:15But okay, I guess you have to put something there with him.
- 1:02:19I'm like, no, this is a dude who's making fucking noise all the
- 1:02:22time. He doesn't shut up every like, anything happens and you're going to
- 1:02:27know about it. I bet he was the loudest child like So anyway,
- 1:02:34I really hope Luf he has just caved his face in, but I don't
- 1:02:37think that's happened. I think he's just going to have been punched. But
- 1:02:40I would like for it to be punched into a paste, that is what
- 1:02:45I would like, and for him to never ever stand up again. But
- 1:02:52I don't think I'm getting my wish. Sorry about it, all right,
- 1:02:59kids, I'm gonna rapp up. But thank you again Florian for commissioning this.
- 1:03:01I didn't see Florian here, so I think he wasn't able to attend,
- 1:03:05But we missed your bud And until next time to loom motherfucker's That was
