- 0:01Speaker 1: Well the radio from hell Xpole. So on Monday, Bill
- 0:06Speaker 1: wasn't here.
- 0:06Speaker 2: But our boner winner was a guy that was finally
- 0:11Speaker 2: caught in one of these scams that involve kids calling
- 0:16Speaker 2: grandparents Grandma, I'm in jail. I need bail money quick,
- 0:20Speaker 2: and apparently like thirty million dollars this guy had managed
- 0:25Speaker 2: to scam out of out of old people. So and
- 0:29Speaker 2: as we were doing the boner voting, we got lots
- 0:31Speaker 2: of text from people saying I fell for that or
- 0:34Speaker 2: my grandma fell for that, And so we had so
- 0:36Speaker 2: many people texting we decided to make that our ex
- 0:38Speaker 2: pole question.
- 0:39Speaker 3: So you've ever been scammed? Or in catfish? Is another
- 0:42Speaker 3: kind of another one? Yeah, I was scammed once I
- 0:46Speaker 3: was talked to investing I think it was five hundred
- 0:49Speaker 3: dollars or something into a product a friend of mine
- 0:51Speaker 3: was sure was going to be the next big thing,
- 0:54Speaker 3: and it wasn't.
- 0:55Speaker 1: I won't go into the details.
- 0:57Speaker 4: But will you tell me off?
- 0:58Speaker 1: I want to know, Well it's it's not. Was that now?
- 1:01Speaker 1: Is that a scam? Or is that just a bad investment?
- 1:03Speaker 1: I think it was. I think scam.
- 1:05Speaker 4: Is there misrepresentative?
- 1:07Speaker 3: I think it was a scam because the product was
- 1:10Speaker 3: not whoever. He didn't invent the product, but he was.
- 1:14Speaker 3: He was convinced by somebody that it was a good,
- 1:17Speaker 3: good thing.
- 1:18Speaker 4: And I so he was scammed and he brought you into.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Yeah, he convinced me, so I was. I fell for
- 1:24Speaker 1: it too.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Well, let's begin. Good friend of the program, Alison Sabo
- 1:28Speaker 4: is here. Hi Allison.
- 1:29Speaker 5: Oh hello, so we're everyone scammed by insurance. But that's
- 1:33Speaker 5: another story. Yeah, all right, my god. So I actually
- 1:38Speaker 5: knew a guy that got catfished pretty hard. I was
- 1:41Speaker 5: at lunch of them. He was an elderly guy, and
- 1:44Speaker 5: he showed me this picture and I was like, in
- 1:47Speaker 5: my head, I was like, this guy's he's getting catfished,
- 1:50Speaker 5: And like, next thing I knew, he had texted me
- 1:53Speaker 5: said all of my money's gone and my family won't
- 1:56Speaker 5: talk to me, and I ghosted him. He didn't know
- 2:00Speaker 5: what to do, and then then turns out he ended
- 2:03Speaker 5: up passing away shortly after that. But I was like,
- 2:06Speaker 5: oh my god, this that has taught me that I
- 2:10Speaker 5: need to be more diligent with non tech savvy people.
- 2:14Speaker 1: All right, thanks Ellis, thank you, Alice.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Thanks.
- 2:17Speaker 4: All right, let's go to that poor guy.
- 2:20Speaker 1: He got catfished and ghosted.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Yeah, Jen is here, Hi Jen?
- 2:25Speaker 1: Hello, Hi, what's your story?
- 2:28Speaker 6: Hey? So, yeah, I had a friend on Facebook post
- 2:31Speaker 6: that like her sister in law had passed away and
- 2:34Speaker 6: her brother was moving to an old folks home and
- 2:36Speaker 6: she listed a bunch of stuff that they were selling,
- 2:39Speaker 6: and so I started dming her and she was like
- 2:43Speaker 6: telling me the prices and they were like great prices,
- 2:46Speaker 6: and they're like just put fifty percent down. And I
- 2:49Speaker 6: actually tried to venmo this person, and Venmo actually blocked it,
- 2:55Speaker 6: so like I only got saved because Veno blocks me
- 2:58Speaker 6: trying to.
- 2:59Speaker 4: Be smarter than you or or they they ran into
- 3:03Speaker 4: this person before.
- 3:05Speaker 7: Yeah, it sounded so legit and just like her, and I.
- 3:09Speaker 6: Was just like, oh cool, yeah, okay, thank you, thank you.
- 3:13Speaker 4: That's a great example. Let's go to Leo.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Hello, Leo. Hi, who got scammed? And how?
- 3:22Speaker 8: All right?
- 3:23Speaker 9: So this is part of a larger saga involving my
- 3:25Speaker 9: mom and getting scammed on Facebook. But two years ago,
- 3:30Speaker 9: my parents and I were looking for a new rental
- 3:31Speaker 9: home and my mom has very particular needs about where
- 3:36Speaker 9: she lives, and someone on Facebook offered her a rental
- 3:42Speaker 9: home that they owned and all that she needed to
- 3:44Speaker 9: do was pay for the utilities, which told to about
- 3:48Speaker 9: twelve thousand dollars, which she ended up spending in euros.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Oh oh geez, oh my god. I never got it back.
- 3:59Speaker 4: It was gone forever.
- 4:01Speaker 10: Wow in and help get the So what your dad
- 4:11Speaker 10: threatened to beat somebody up? Uh?
- 4:15Speaker 3: Hopefully?
- 4:16Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 4:17Speaker 1: All right, thanks Leo, Thank you Leo.
- 4:20Speaker 4: All right, here's some texts coming in. Both my wife
- 4:23Speaker 4: and son almost got took by the jury duty scam.
- 4:27Speaker 4: I don't know what that scam. See, this is why
- 4:29Speaker 4: we need you to call in so you can tell
- 4:30Speaker 4: us what the jury duty scam is.
- 4:32Speaker 1: I don't believe you.
- 4:33Speaker 4: I work for a credit union and people get scammed
- 4:36Speaker 4: so easy. We will never call you and ask for
- 4:39Speaker 4: a credit card number, account number or secure address code.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Let's see, the biggest scam of them all is marriage.
- 4:48Speaker 4: Look tell your therapist. Sorry, yeah, I wish I knew
- 4:53Speaker 4: what the jury duty scam we got?
- 4:56Speaker 3: We got line one the card? What this is? Randy? Randy?
- 5:01Speaker 1: What is the car decal scam?
- 5:04Speaker 11: So once upon a time you would get a notification
- 5:08Speaker 11: or an email. I actually saw them like advertised and
- 5:12Speaker 11: actually indeed zip recruiter all the places, and they would
- 5:16Speaker 11: pay you five hundred dollars a week just to have
- 5:19Speaker 11: an advertisement decal put on your windshield or your back
- 5:23Speaker 11: window and you drive around with it and they pay
- 5:26Speaker 11: you for that.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:27Speaker 11: Well the scam part was they send you a check
- 5:31Speaker 11: for you to take your car to get this decal
- 5:33Speaker 11: put on, because you know they pay for the decal.
- 5:36Speaker 11: Yeah yeah, well no, they send you the check, you
- 5:39Speaker 11: put it in your bank account, then they have you
- 5:41Speaker 11: venmo or PayPal that money to.
- 5:45Speaker 7: Whoever this was.
- 5:46Speaker 11: It's supposed to put the decal on. That money goes through,
- 5:50Speaker 11: but those checks were not even real checks. So the
- 5:54Speaker 11: hole I ended up, bank accounts closed, they lost my car.
- 5:59Speaker 12: It was a good fun.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Wow.
- 6:00Speaker 11: Yeah, it was a good one.
- 6:02Speaker 1: A learning experience.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Wow.
- 6:05Speaker 11: That's the only way I can look at it is
- 6:06Speaker 11: at least I learned a less.
- 6:10Speaker 9: As again.
- 6:14Speaker 11: Have a good day, guys.
- 6:16Speaker 4: All right, thanks. The jury duty scams they claim you
- 6:18Speaker 4: failed to appear for jury duty and you have to
- 6:20Speaker 4: pay this person so a warrant doesn't get issue.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Okay, okay, all right? Scams? What did you fall for?
- 6:27Speaker 1: Who did you fall for? What? What? What are you?
- 6:29Speaker 1: What were you prayed on, We've got a lot of phone.
- 6:35Speaker 12: Hi, HELLOSU.
- 6:38Speaker 5: Hi.
- 6:38Speaker 12: What's so I fell?
- 6:40Speaker 13: Sorry?
- 6:40Speaker 1: Good? Yeah, go on.
- 6:43Speaker 12: I fell for a scam that John Oliver actually did
- 6:46Speaker 12: a story on, uh and it's called pig slaughtering, And
- 6:50Speaker 12: it entails like I got a random text from a girl.
- 6:55Speaker 12: We ended up, you know, kind of chatting, you know.
- 6:57Speaker 12: I was like, you know, whatever, and and it just
- 7:00Speaker 12: kind of built up to where it never really was
- 7:02Speaker 12: like a relationship, like a you know, you know, feelings
- 7:08Speaker 12: type thing, but it was. She she started showing me
- 7:10Speaker 12: how she was investing in making money, and so I'm like,
- 7:14Speaker 12: there's no way I'm sending this person money. And then
- 7:17Speaker 12: she finally talked to me, and I invested like a
- 7:18Speaker 12: little bit, you know, like a thousand dollars and then
- 7:21Speaker 12: you know, I'm seeing this grow. And the scam is
- 7:24Speaker 12: where they start. They allow you to withdraw some of
- 7:27Speaker 12: this money, so you think it's real. Yeah, And I
- 7:30Speaker 12: was having Venmo calls with this girl, so everything seemed
- 7:33Speaker 12: like like this is an actual, real person and this
- 7:35Speaker 12: is a real thing. And so after I was able
- 7:38Speaker 12: to start withdrawing the money, I thought, Okay, this is legit.
- 7:41Speaker 12: And then I started putting in the bigger funds and
- 7:44Speaker 12: then it just all of a sudden became unavailable for
- 7:47Speaker 12: me to withdraw.
- 7:48Speaker 1: How much money did you lose?
- 7:52Speaker 4: You don't have to say, you know.
- 7:53Speaker 12: I mean, luckily for me, I didn't have a lot available,
- 7:59Speaker 12: but it was it was probably about twenty grand.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Oh a lot of money.
- 8:04Speaker 1: I hope, I hope. Well, well listen, I hope, I
- 8:09Speaker 1: hope when you see this girl you give her a
- 8:11Speaker 1: piece of your mind.
- 8:13Speaker 12: Well that's the thing, is like, so on the John
- 8:15Speaker 12: Oliver story, they talk about these these people. So she
- 8:18Speaker 12: was Taiwanese, and they say that the scam it's like
- 8:21Speaker 12: they round up like kind of like like slave people,
- 8:25Speaker 12: you know, like China. Well they said it was in China.
- 8:27Speaker 1: They would just basically.
- 8:28Speaker 12: Take these people and lock them up and then make
- 8:31Speaker 12: them do these things. So it makes you can't necessarily
- 8:35Speaker 12: get mad at the person that's scamming you, because they
- 8:39Speaker 12: may have their family locked up, or they may be
- 8:41Speaker 12: locked up themselves. Yeah, and so yeah, so it's like
- 8:46Speaker 12: and the crazy thing was for me is I still
- 8:49Speaker 12: thought it was legit and I just couldn't get my
- 8:52Speaker 12: money and tell I saw the John Oliver story and
- 8:54Speaker 12: I saw him lay out step by step every single
- 8:57Speaker 12: little thing that hey, I'm like, oh that that actually
- 9:02Speaker 12: was thanks.
- 9:04Speaker 4: We gotta go uh tony, Hi, go ahead.
- 9:12Speaker 14: Okay, So this my brother in law did not get scammed,
- 9:17Speaker 14: but almost scammed. So there was like a a I
- 9:20Speaker 14: sing that had my sister's voice.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 9:23Speaker 14: And my sister in law called my brother in law
- 9:27Speaker 14: on a like a number that was blocked, and he
- 9:30Speaker 14: answered it, and she was begging money because.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Finn was like abusing.
- 9:35Speaker 14: Her what was said. But luckily she called my husband.
- 9:41Speaker 14: And I lived really close to my sister a lot.
- 9:43Speaker 14: We went right down to her house, like what's going on.
- 9:46Speaker 14: She's like nothing, yea, but it was close.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 9:54Speaker 2: That's similar to the grandparents saying I need my bail money.
- 9:57Speaker 1: It's a similar thing.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Hayley, Hello, Haley, Yes, hello.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Well it's your story. Go ahead.
- 10:05Speaker 9: So it actually.
- 10:06Speaker 7: Happened last week. I got a notification from American Express
- 10:12Speaker 7: that I had a thirty five hundred dollars charge that
- 10:14Speaker 7: they blocked. So I called them and it was from
- 10:18Speaker 7: Mint Mobile and they said, we stopped it and we
- 10:21Speaker 7: got our cards, you know, reissued all that. So we
- 10:24Speaker 7: thought that was the end of it. And then the
- 10:27Speaker 7: next morning, we got a package on our porch and
- 10:29Speaker 7: my husband went right out and got it and it
- 10:31Speaker 7: was from FedEx and it was from Mint Mobile and
- 10:33Speaker 7: it was two cell phones and we we were like
- 10:38Speaker 7: so confused. I thought did I click something? Like what
- 10:40Speaker 7: did I do? And he called them and like two
- 10:46Speaker 7: minutes later a guy showed up to our porch trying
- 10:48Speaker 7: to pack it. Yeah, and so that we missed him.
- 10:52Speaker 7: And then another guy came maybe three minutes later, and
- 10:56Speaker 7: we went out and we're like, what are you? What
- 10:57Speaker 7: is going on? And he's like, I'm just an uber.
- 11:00Speaker 7: I was told to pick up a package for Nikki
- 11:03Speaker 7: and we're like really, so I got a picture of
- 11:05Speaker 7: his license. Anyways, that part didn't really transpire, but I
- 11:08Speaker 7: called the police and we talked to him and they
- 11:10Speaker 7: said he said this actually happened to his parents with jewelry.
- 11:13Speaker 7: But they they ordered they hack your account, they have
- 11:16Speaker 7: all your information, so it looks legit. They send it
- 11:19Speaker 7: to your house, but they have the tracking code so
- 11:21Speaker 7: as soon as it gets dropped off, they'd.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Bay and pick it up.
- 11:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:25Speaker 7: Yeah, so anyways, we still have the phones. A guy
- 11:28Speaker 7: called my husband like twenty minutes later and was like,
- 11:32Speaker 7: did you we might have sent you the phones to
- 11:34Speaker 7: the wrong area.
- 11:35Speaker 5: Can you mel them?
- 11:36Speaker 7: And he's like, he said, oh, I let the police know.
- 11:38Speaker 7: Said we're dealing with a scam. And he said, no,
- 11:41Speaker 7: this is not a scam and he.
- 11:42Speaker 15: Hung up later, thank you.
- 11:45Speaker 4: Hey, we're getting.
- 11:46Speaker 7: Ready to send it back to mint Mobile because they
- 11:49Speaker 7: are their phones.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Glad you got it. Thanks, All right, let's go to
- 11:53Speaker 4: lane Hello Lane.
- 11:56Speaker 13: So the deal is on. The lady called about that's
- 12:00Speaker 13: the detal that they put on your car when and
- 12:03Speaker 13: it was a freedom Way and it comes. So the
- 12:05Speaker 13: check comes in the mail for six hundred dollars and
- 12:09Speaker 13: it's on like Freedom Away, Dallas, Texas. So everything looks legit.
- 12:13Speaker 13: And I was gonna go put it in my credit
- 12:14Speaker 13: union and I said, you know what where else? Parvo
- 12:17Speaker 13: the bank is drawn on. It is right across the street.
- 12:19Speaker 13: All this over, didn't get the cash. Well, the guy
- 12:22Speaker 13: was going to cash it. The cash sture was and
- 12:25Speaker 13: to tell her whatever you want to call him and uh,
- 12:27Speaker 13: he was going to catch it. And the lady come over.
- 12:29Speaker 13: She goes, oh, no, whack can she stamped that thing
- 12:31Speaker 13: And it was bogus, and so I caught it. Just
- 12:36Speaker 13: take the take the check to the bank that it's
- 12:39Speaker 13: drawn off, will just drop it in your account.
- 12:41Speaker 1: All right, thank you, thank you. Let's go to Cliff.
- 12:46Speaker 8: Hello Cliff, Hey, lord and lady, thanks for letting me listen.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Go ahead.
- 12:52Speaker 8: Mike Uh signed up to be a contractor on like
- 12:56Speaker 8: one of those home service sites like Angie and what not.
- 12:59Speaker 8: Accepted a job and I gave him my quote. They
- 13:03Speaker 8: offered double what I was asking, which I thought was interesting.
- 13:08Speaker 8: Accepted the job, but my wife the whole time, God
- 13:11Speaker 8: bless her, was like, this doesn't fill right, doesn't fill right.
- 13:15Speaker 8: So then I got a check in the mail through
- 13:18Speaker 8: a legit bank, and my wife said, just double check,
- 13:22Speaker 8: double check. So I called the banks and the name,
- 13:26Speaker 8: like the actual name on the account was a legit account. However,
- 13:30Speaker 8: because it was a cashiers check and I had asked
- 13:33Speaker 8: for a cashiers check as a form of payment because
- 13:35Speaker 8: they refuse electronic payment anyway, they the routing number and
- 13:41Speaker 8: the beginning numbers on the cashiers check was different than
- 13:44Speaker 8: what that bank used.
- 13:45Speaker 15: So they said the account number the cus you.
- 13:48Speaker 8: Know, the name on the account was real, but the
- 13:50Speaker 8: cashiers check was wrong, and so thankfully my wife and
- 13:54Speaker 8: her you know, ability to see through the muck and
- 13:57Speaker 8: Murray was able to help me name that avoid I.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Wonder why she ever married you.
- 14:03Speaker 12: Oh, Bill got the short stick.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Well that's quite a confession place. All right, talk to
- 14:15Speaker 4: you later. Cameron is here. Last call Cameron.
- 14:20Speaker 15: Hey, how's it going good?
- 14:22Speaker 1: Go ahead? Uh?
- 14:23Speaker 15: Contractor fraud. So I got hit for sixty thousand dollars
- 14:30Speaker 15: pretty much. You can check TOPP will make sure they're
- 14:32Speaker 15: a real contractor. But it's kind of a Ponzi scheme
- 14:34Speaker 15: where they'll take your deposit to start working on someone's project.
- 14:37Speaker 15: They already started. They'll do the demo and then they'll
- 14:40Speaker 15: never come back after they're like, we need to order materials. Yeah,
- 14:43Speaker 15: it's really common in Utah. There's no tea for novel,
- 14:46Speaker 15: so they just get an eight hundred dollars fine and
- 14:47Speaker 15: they do it, you know, one hundred times before they
- 14:49Speaker 15: finally get caught.
- 14:50Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 14:50Speaker 4: I know people that have had that happen to them.
- 14:53Speaker 1: All right, Thanks, thanks Carol,
