- 0:04Welcome back to the Remodel Report, brought to
- 0:07you by USA Cabinet Store. I am Chris, and today
- 0:11we are tackling the one decision that makes or
- 0:13breaks a kitchen remodel, the cabinets. With
- 0:17me, as always, is our resident cabinet expert,
- 0:20Jessica. Jessica, why do cabinets matter this
- 0:24much? Hey Chris, so here's the thing. Cabinets
- 0:28are usually the single biggest line item in a
- 0:30kitchen, and they are the part you live with
- 0:32the longest. Get the box, the door, and the construction
- 0:35right, and everything else in the room has something
- 0:38to lean on. Get them wrong, and honestly, no
- 0:41countertop or backsplash is going to save the
- 0:43look. No pressure then. Okay, let us start simple.
- 0:47When someone walks into a showroom, what are
- 0:50the actual options? There are four ways cabinets
- 0:53are sold, and they trade price against flexibility.
- 0:56Ready to assemble, or RTA, ships flat, and is
- 0:59the fastest and cheapest way to get a quality
- 1:01box. Then stock, which is pre -built in fixed
- 1:05sizes. Then semi -custom, where you modify sizes
- 1:09and finishes, and that is where most remodels
- 1:11land. And finally, full custom, built to order
- 1:14for odd layouts or a real statement kitchen.
- 1:17So RTA on one end, custom on the other. But before
- 1:20you even pick a brand, you told me there is a
- 1:22bigger question people skip. Yes, and this is
- 1:26the one I wish everybody knew. Framed versus
- 1:29frameless. A framed cabinet has a face frame
- 1:31on the front, which gives you rock -solid door
- 1:34alignment and lets you do inset and traditional
- 1:36looks. Frameless, also called Full Access or
- 1:40European, has no face frame, so you get a wider
- 1:43opening, more drawer space, and that clean modern
- 1:46line. Want inset and traditional? Go framed.
- 1:51Want slab doors and maximum storage in a small
- 1:54kitchen? Go frameless. Love it. Now here's what
- 1:58I always wonder. Two cabinets can look identical
- 2:01in the showroom. How do I know which one actually
- 2:04lasts? You ask two questions. Is the box plywood,
- 2:08and are the drawer boxes dovetail? Plywood is
- 2:12strong, light, and it shrugs off moisture better
- 2:15than particle board. Dovetail joints interlock
- 2:18instead of relying on staples, so heavily loaded
- 2:21drawers stay square. That said, it is not only
- 2:24the material. Panel thickness, edge sealing,
- 2:28the glide rating, and the quality of the install
- 2:31all matter too. But if a salesperson dodges the
- 2:35box question, that tells you something. Okay,
- 2:38let us talk style. What are people actually choosing
- 2:40in 2026? The cold, all -gray, all -white kitchen
- 2:43is on its way out. The National Kitchen and Bath
- 2:46Association surveyed over 600 designers for their
- 2:492026 report. Neutrals still lead, but they are
- 2:54warm now. Think cream, taupe, and mushroom. Green
- 2:57is the standout accent color at 86%. Natural
- 3:02wood is surging, especially white oak. And two
- 3:05-tone kitchens, like a green or navy island against
- 3:08lighter cabinets, are just normal now. Warm and
- 3:11natural. I am here for it. Now the question everybody's
- 3:15really thinking, what does this cost? Fair. Nationally,
- 3:21cabinets can run anywhere from about $5 ,000
- 3:23for a DIY stock job up past $40 ,000 for custom
- 3:27installed. At USA Cabinet Store as installed
- 3:30projects, the value in stock lines land around
- 3:33$15 ,000 to $27 ,000. Semi -custom is roughly
- 3:37$40 ,000 to $78 ,000. And semi -custom to full
- 3:41-custom runs about $78 ,000, up to $155 ,000
- 3:44for large high -end kitchens. Okay, that is a
- 3:47real range. And speaking of money, we hear some
- 3:50horror stories from listeners about the buying
- 3:52process itself. We do. And Reddit is full of
- 3:56them. The biggest one is high pressure sales.
- 3:59Somebody gets quoted $38 ,000, then it magically
- 4:02drops to $24 ,000 if they sign today. The best
- 4:05advice I saw was simple. If you get a bad feeling,
- 4:09walk away. A real quote still makes sense tomorrow.
- 4:14The other big one is reface versus replace. Refacing
- 4:17keeps your boxes and swaps the doors, which is
- 4:20great if the boxes are solid. But if they are
- 4:22sagging particle board, you are just dressing
- 4:24up a failing frame. So trust your gut and know
- 4:28what problem you are actually solving. Now, USA
- 4:31Cabinet Store does something a little different
- 4:33here, right? Right. Most stores sell one or two
- 4:36brands and bend your kitchen to fit them. USA
- 4:40Cabinet Store carries nine lines. everything
- 4:42from that locally stocked RTA up to German engineered
- 4:46frameless. So a designer can price your exact
- 4:49kitchen across value, semi -custom, and custom
- 4:52in one sitting. And design, measure, and installation
- 4:56are part of the service. It means the cabinet
- 4:59fits the project, not the other way around. That
- 5:02is the part I really like. Okay, Jessica, give
- 5:04me the takeaways. If someone is starting this
- 5:06week, what do they need to remember? Four things.
- 5:10One, Pick framed or frameless before you pick
- 5:12a brand. Two, insist on a plywood box and dovetail
- 5:17drawers. Three, chase warm color and texture
- 5:20over a trendy shade you will regret. And four,
- 5:24get it priced as an installed project, with modifications
- 5:27included, so you are comparing apples to apples.
- 5:30Perfect. If you want the full written guide,
- 5:33it is on the USA cabinet store website, and you
- 5:37can book a free design consultation. at any of
- 5:39their 14 -plus showrooms across Virginia, Maryland,
- 5:43the Carolinas, Texas, and beyond. Jessica, thanks
- 5:48as always. Anytime, Chris. Happy remodeling,
- 5:51everyone. Go build the kitchen you actually want.
