- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:27All right, this is coach Brian Marshall from Del Valley High
- 0:30School. And today we're going to talk
- 0:31about change the culture, change the athlete.
- 0:35One of the things that that we can all agree on is that track
- 0:40is is hard. Track is a a very difficult
- 0:44sport, from the running events to the field events and it takes
- 0:50a lot of discipline, time, hard work.
- 0:55As a matter of fact, I always quote Austin Reagan coach Paul
- 0:59Darby when he said, hey, we don't practice track, we train
- 1:03to win championships. And so it it kind of takes the
- 1:08the look of practicing for track in a whole other light.
- 1:13So when I thought about doing this segment about changing the
- 1:19culture, it had directly to do with my current situation here
- 1:25coming into a new school where they've had some success in the
- 1:30past, not as much lately, but the school and the district and
- 1:37the students, we're ready for a, a push.
- 1:43One thing I can say about the Dell Valley students here is
- 1:46that, you know, they, they want to be coached.
- 1:49They want to be successful and then they're just waiting for
- 1:54somebody to come and help guide them.
- 1:57And so one of the things when I talked about kind of changing
- 1:59the culture here, first thing is belief, your belief system,
- 2:05because culture is a part of that culture is your beliefs,
- 2:08your values, your morals. That's the way that you do
- 2:11things can sometimes even include material objects within
- 2:16your culture. But belief is a huge part of
- 2:20changing anything. You know, my beliefs are
- 2:24different because I'm also FCA Fellowship of Christian Athletes
- 2:28coach and so my beliefs a lot are faith-based and I, you know,
- 2:33I, I talked to my student athletes about that.
- 2:37I don't ever push or force anything on them.
- 2:39Their beliefs are their own. But when it comes to to matters
- 2:45dealing with track and me as a coach, that's just who I am.
- 2:48A lot of my stuff is faith-based because I'm just a vessel.
- 2:54God has just blessed me to put me in a position to where I have
- 2:58impact in young lives, to where I can help the youth and mold
- 3:03them. But if it wasn't me, it'd be
- 3:05somebody else. So it's not anything special
- 3:07that I'm doing other than being obedient to what God called me
- 3:10to do. But you talk about, you know,
- 3:14changing the belief in a culture in a school and the specifically
- 3:17an athletic program. You think about faith because
- 3:21the whole concept of believing in Christ is is faith.
- 3:26You know, several scriptures talk about it, you know, Hebrews
- 3:3011 and one says faith is the substance of things hoped for
- 3:33and the evidence of things not seen.
- 3:35So, so having that faith in the belief of something that you
- 3:40can't tangibly see yet, but you know, it is out there.
- 3:46You know, Isaiah 40 and eight says those who hope in the Lord
- 3:50shall renew their strength, their mountable wing like
- 3:53eagles, they will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow
- 3:56faint. Even you think about the, the,
- 4:01the concept of salvation. You know, how do you get saved
- 4:05through Jesus Christ? It's a belief.
- 4:07You believe that he is the son of God.
- 4:09He died on the cross for our sins and and God rose through
- 4:11the dead. So even the gift of salvation
- 4:14comes from that belief. And so one of the things in the
- 4:17athletic program, specifically with my girls track team is just
- 4:20changing the belief, changing the expectations, changing the
- 4:25the, the work ethic, changing how we do things, how we look,
- 4:29you know, not just just talking about it, but actually walking
- 4:34that and doing it, You know, getting them all to look uniform
- 4:40and present, getting them into a routine and practice, getting
- 4:43them to understand why we take so long to warm up, you know,
- 4:48and, and, and having them have the ability to buy into that
- 4:52belief and start believing, Hey, this is the way things should
- 4:55be. And then you translate it onto
- 4:57the track. And when they start to see those
- 5:00times drive for, you know, those distances go up, you see them,
- 5:05you know, start to understand that the work is paying off and
- 5:08why they're doing things, especially when they're they're
- 5:11bought in. You know, that's a concept of
- 5:13sports that we talk about all the time, if we can get buy in
- 5:16from the kids. But once you get that, once you
- 5:20do that, then they see the fruits of their labor and their
- 5:22results. And, you know, you can take it
- 5:25to a whole different place. And that's one of the things
- 5:30that I've noticed here just this past year, you know, coming from
- 5:34where we started to now doing the things that the that that
- 5:43championship teams do, trying to make sure that we have
- 5:48everything that we need. And the kids know what it is
- 5:51that they're trying to do while they're doing it to accomplish
- 5:55those goals. You know, training math is
- 5:59training, training matters. Let's let's get that out there
- 6:03now for, for especially for track training matters.
- 6:07The way that you do, the methods, the things that you do
- 6:10as a coach, going through your cycles and your progressions.
- 6:14And we all know that a lot of the good things in our
- 6:17profession are stolen or derived from other great coaches.
- 6:21Even if you've created workouts or different workout template, a
- 6:24lot of it is you picked and choose ideas from several other
- 6:29great coaches. And I know I'm speaking from
- 6:31experience because I, I was blessed to be under some really,
- 6:35really great coaches throughout my career And I picked their
- 6:41brain, all of them. And then, you know, I pick and
- 6:45choose a lot of the stuff, understanding why they did
- 6:48things and then molded kind of my own format of, you know, hey,
- 6:51this is the way that I'm going to do things as far as training
- 6:55methods, right? But you know, it goes back to
- 6:58the belief because when you, when you believe or your, your
- 7:03kids believe that they're doing something for a purpose, the
- 7:07intensity in those training methods grows up.
- 7:11It goes up, right? So they start running harder at
- 7:14practice, they're working harder at drills.
- 7:17And we as coaches know that leads to improvement.
- 7:20They start believing that they can do things they start
- 7:23believing in and the way that they're competing.
- 7:27And we know as coaches that helps to improve things.
- 7:32The discipline and the focus from your young people is also a
- 7:37part of, you know, that culture and, and, and trying to change,
- 7:42you know what that looks like. You know, and I know for me,
- 7:47like I said, our kids were, were ready to start competing and
- 7:52being on the elite level and, and trying to go out there and,
- 7:57and do their very, very best. And, you know, we're in a
- 8:01pretty, pretty tough district when it comes to things.
- 8:05You know, we have, you know, Westlake, Lake Travis Driven
- 8:07Springs. And so we have some, some very
- 8:12well established programs that we're competing against.
- 8:15And one of the things that tell the girls is that you have to
- 8:19start expecting and believing that you deserve to be here.
- 8:24OK? It's not just going to be, you
- 8:27know, by happenstance. You put in the work, you know,
- 8:30you, you did the things that you need to do.
- 8:33You deserve to be here. And I don't need you to be here.
- 8:35You deserve to be successful. And and you know, that's that's
- 8:40The thing is getting that mindset to switch like, you
- 8:44know, you know what? Yeah, it doesn't matter if
- 8:47that's big time so and so I worked hard.
- 8:50I deserve to be here. And and that's one of the things
- 8:54that I've noticed from our group this year, especially because
- 8:59they they they've shown that they're starting to believe just
- 9:04had district won a four by two. We were district champs in a
- 9:08four by two. And and you know, the girls
- 9:12expected it. You know, it wasn't just, you
- 9:15know, we're just glad to make it and we're glad our times are
- 9:18dropping. You know, they expected to go
- 9:20out there and win that. And and that's kind of been the
- 9:25change as far as this season. And that comes from each
- 9:30individual athlete because, you know, track is considered an
- 9:36individual sport, but it's it's really a team sport.
- 9:38I mean, they on paper, it's individual.
- 9:40So, but it's a team sport and that like any other team sport,
- 9:47is if you change the individual and you strengthen the
- 9:51individual, then the team as a whole gets stronger and changing
- 9:56the culture in each one of those young ladies minds from, you
- 9:59know, your JV kids to your varsity kids to those seniors
- 10:02that have been there for four years and you know, they're on
- 10:05their third coach. You know, it it, it's, it's
- 10:09still about changing that individual mindset to change the
- 10:13collective. And another big thing about
- 10:19about changing the the culture of any program and changing that
- 10:23athlete. And I don't think it's brought
- 10:27up enough, but kids liking and believing in their coaches helps
- 10:34play a huge role. These are all teenage kids.
- 10:37We know that they'll go harder for a coach they like or feel
- 10:42like a coach that relates to them, or if the coach that they
- 10:47believe in that coach, you know, they'll, they'll do that extra.
- 10:51And you know, in an ideal world, they, they wouldn't have to
- 10:55because they'd be going 100% all the time.
- 10:58But when you're dealing with teenagers, we all know that's
- 11:00not the case. So them getting that buy in
- 11:05because they believe in what you're selling them and then buy
- 11:09in because they know that you love them and you care about
- 11:11them and, and they're starting to feel the same way.
- 11:16And the other thing is meeting them where they are right.
- 11:19You know, development is, is crucial.
- 11:25I won't say development over talent, because when you have,
- 11:28you know, raw talent, that's always a good thing.
- 11:31If you got to, you know, if you going back to four by two, if
- 11:34you got 6 girls that are all running 20 fours, now your only
- 11:37problem is to pick which 4 go on, which 2 are alternates.
- 11:40And, and how am I going to, to order my legs and, and how am I
- 11:44going to do these handoffs? You know, but you know, getting
- 11:47the development when you've got 4 girls running 27.
- 11:51OK, now I got to get their speed down.
- 11:53I got to get, I got to get those, those down 1st and, you
- 11:57know, then get them believing in each other, knowing that they
- 12:00can depend on each other. Then, then you go to, you know,
- 12:03ordering your legs or, or working your handoffs or
- 12:06anything like that. So meeting the kids where they
- 12:09are and then developing that, you know that bringing that out
- 12:12of them. And I think when you're talking
- 12:14about just coaching in general, I think that's, that's that's
- 12:17the the greatest measure of, of a coach is seeing what you can
- 12:24bring out of your athletes from the time you have them to the
- 12:27time they leave you. You know, because if we're
- 12:29completely honest with ourselves, a lot of times
- 12:32situations can dictate wins and losses and championships and all
- 12:37that other stuff a lot more than, you know, the coaching
- 12:41ability can. You can have some really, really
- 12:43great coaches that just don't have enough of the firepower to
- 12:46go up against the big guns. And then, you know, you have
- 12:50some of those, you know, Cinderella stories where, you
- 12:53know, the underdog takes it, you know, but that's a few and far
- 12:57between. But, you know, sitting there
- 12:59looking at your individual athletes and saying, OK, where
- 13:02did I get this person? And and when they left me, you
- 13:05know, how much better or how much did they improve or not
- 13:12improve? And then I think that's kind of
- 13:13how you can measure yourself as a coach by the development stage
- 13:21again, But you know it. I think when you establish your
- 13:26belief system, you establish your priorities, how things are
- 13:29going to be done, how you want to, to change your programs, how
- 13:37you want to change what the expectations are.
- 13:42I think that once you get that and you get your athletes to to
- 13:47buy in and to believe in that, I truly believe that can change
- 13:53that athlete for the better. Doesn't matter how good they
- 13:56are, what level they are, where they are as an athlete.
- 13:59We're just talking about improvement and change.
- 14:03I believe that changing that that culture around that athlete
- 14:07can definitely change that athlete for the better.
- 14:11And all of these things, you know, that we're talking about
- 14:17from training, discipline, focus, belief systems,
- 14:21everything else. I mean, you know, they're all
- 14:24things that we're already doing as as coaches, right?
- 14:27But I just don't think that anybody has thought about how
- 14:29much has shift and changing culture can change that
- 14:33individual student athlete. And so I just wanted to get on
- 14:38here and, and, and kind of just share my $0.02.
