- 2:36Speaker 3: Literary Hey, everyone.
- 2:43Speaker 1: This is your girl, SCBookGal843. And how are you tonight? Okay, okay. Well,
- 2:55Speaker 1: you know what? First of all, I just want to say,
- 2:59Speaker 1: South Carolina, y'all doing your thing. Do y'all know that
- 3:03Speaker 1: right now, South Carolina... has exceeded itself in early voting.
- 3:08Speaker 1: This is the largest early voting turnout they have ever had.
- 3:14Speaker 1: So let's keep going. Let's turn South Carolina blue, and
- 3:19Speaker 1: let's make those changes, okay? For me, you guys, so
- 3:25Speaker 1: I'm out here in Columbia, and I am at the
- 3:30Speaker 1: South Carolina Library Association Conference. And I just did a presentation.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Happy that it's over. You would think that me doing
- 3:45Speaker 1: this for you guys next year would be year five,
- 3:48Speaker 1: that I would be used to public speaking. No. I
- 3:52Speaker 1: had like three breakdowns today crying because I knew I
- 3:54Speaker 1: would speak in front of people. So I'm glad this
- 3:58Speaker 1: is over with, and I'm so happy to be ready
- 4:01Speaker 1: to go home to my baby on Thursday. But, you
- 4:07Speaker 1: will have to bring a new book and a new author. Tonight,
- 4:13Speaker 1: you guys, I get to interview Patrice. No, not me.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Her name is Patrice. She has a book that is entitled,
- 4:27Speaker 1: I Am Patrice. I am going to be welcoming and
- 4:31Speaker 1: bringing up author Patrice Williams. Richardson. Come on up, girly.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Come on up. Hi.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Hey, girly.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Hi.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Welcome to SC Book Gals and Friends. We are glad
- 4:50Speaker 1: to have you tonight.
- 4:52Speaker 3: I'm happy to be here.
- 4:55Speaker 1: So, from Patrice to Patrice, tell me a little bit
- 4:59Speaker 1: about yourself.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Well, I am.
- 5:06Speaker 3: As they say, I'm a trade of a lot of
- 5:12Speaker 3: things to none, basically, as they say a little bit.
- 5:17Speaker 3: I'm from Mobile, Alabama. Originally, my parents still live there.
- 5:21Speaker 3: I am the second youngest sibling. I have an older sister.
- 5:25Speaker 3: And right now I live in multiple states. And I
- 5:32Speaker 3: work in health care as well as federal government.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Oh, you got two stressful jobs.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Yes.
- 5:45Speaker 1: How did you find time to write with those two
- 5:48Speaker 1: professions in your life?
- 5:50Speaker 3: I didn't have the federal government at the time. And
- 5:53Speaker 3: so I just took my time. And it took me
- 5:56Speaker 3: over three years to write the book. And I wasn't
- 6:02Speaker 3: going to release the book. That's what the issue was,
- 6:06Speaker 3: is that I wasn't going to release the book because
- 6:08Speaker 3: I cared about the people in the book. But I
- 6:12Speaker 3: didn't add names in the book. So my characters don't
- 6:15Speaker 3: even have names in the book. Okay.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Now that's a first for me. You got to tell
- 6:24Speaker 1: me about this. None of the characters in your book
- 6:28Speaker 1: have names? No. No.
- 6:30Speaker 3: None of the characters have names, and the reason why
- 6:33Speaker 3: I did that is to protect people's identity. And the
- 6:37Speaker 3: craziness that happened, I didn't want anybody to look down
- 6:43Speaker 3: on those people, so I did not add any names
- 6:45Speaker 3: to anyone.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Okay, that's wonderful to protect. Okay, I see it. I
- 6:53Speaker 1: see it. So, what made you want to become... An
- 7:00Speaker 1: author with those two careers. Why an author?
- 7:06Speaker 3: It's I wanted my story to be told, but not
- 7:11Speaker 3: only I wanted my story to be told, but I
- 7:13Speaker 3: wanted to share the book because you never know when
- 7:17Speaker 3: people are going through things. And we especially as African-Americans,
- 7:21Speaker 3: we go through things silently and we don't want people
- 7:24Speaker 3: to know that we're going through things. So this book
- 7:28Speaker 3: is to show them you can have everything in the
- 7:30Speaker 3: world or you can be this person, but that doesn't
- 7:32Speaker 3: mean you don't go through anything. And so now I
- 7:34Speaker 3: am Patrice is not only a book, but it's a movement.
- 7:38Speaker 3: So it it supports women that are homeless, women that
- 7:43Speaker 3: are going through bad relationships or just going through some things.
- 7:47Speaker 3: And so I wanted to share my story so they
- 7:52Speaker 3: know that that's not your end game. You want to
- 7:54Speaker 3: move past that. You need to grow past that. So
- 7:57Speaker 3: that's just your situation right now. But you can grow
- 7:59Speaker 3: past the situation and become so much more because I
- 8:02Speaker 3: became so much more after the book.
- 8:10Speaker 1: You came so much more after the book. So your
- 8:16Speaker 1: book showed you yourself and you place yourself in the book.
- 8:23Speaker 1: And you gain the benefits of the book.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Yes.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Now, I like that. You're going to have to tell
- 8:32Speaker 1: me a little bit about that. How does it feel
- 8:34Speaker 1: to gain from your own book? Because some authors, once
- 8:39Speaker 1: they write the book, they just put it on the
- 8:40Speaker 1: shelf or they sell it. But you gain from your
- 8:44Speaker 1: own book. So how does that feel?
- 8:48Speaker 3: It feels, it's a huge blessing. Sometimes I get emotional
- 8:53Speaker 3: because to see how far I've become in my life
- 8:57Speaker 3: and then the woman that I became in my life,
- 9:00Speaker 3: it just shocks me. And to see my book blessing
- 9:05Speaker 3: people and families and I get messages saying, hey, can
- 9:09Speaker 3: you talk to this person? Or when you're in this state,
- 9:11Speaker 3: can you talk to this person? And I love that
- 9:15Speaker 3: because they do see me as that motivator that's going
- 9:18Speaker 3: to help somebody themselves or want to do better in
- 9:23Speaker 3: their life and then show them different things for them
- 9:26Speaker 3: to grow as well because I'm all about growth.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Growth. That's a big word and people don't realize how
- 9:37Speaker 1: much weight is in the word growth.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 9:43Speaker 1: So my next question is what is the biggest benefit
- 9:47Speaker 1: that you gain from writing your book I Am Patrice?
- 9:57Speaker 3: Uh, more so just giving back. I give more than
- 10:01Speaker 3: what I receive. And so now that I'm global, I'm
- 10:05Speaker 3: not only in the United States, but I'm in every country.
- 10:08Speaker 3: So my book is everywhere. And so I, I like
- 10:13Speaker 3: giving back and I, uh, that's something I'm going to
- 10:16Speaker 3: continue to do is giving back, uh, to women, to men,
- 10:20Speaker 3: because my book is just not about women. It's to
- 10:23Speaker 3: help a woman, but it's all about entrepreneurs because people
- 10:27Speaker 3: think you got to be rich to be an entrepreneur.
- 10:29Speaker 3: You don't. I started with $ 10. I had $ 10 and
- 10:33Speaker 3: I was like, I didn't want to be broke anymore.
- 10:35Speaker 3: And so that was one of the things how all
- 10:38Speaker 3: of my companies grew because I started with $ 10. And
- 10:42Speaker 3: a lot of people don't realize that. I just went
- 10:44Speaker 3: and got my business license and I made it do
- 10:46Speaker 3: what it do. And it has manifest. All of my
- 10:49Speaker 3: companies are moving, shaking and growing all at the same time.
- 10:54Speaker 3: So it's just that is the benefit for me and
- 10:57Speaker 3: for me to give back to people that are in
- 11:00Speaker 3: need or even just giving them a word of encouragement.
- 11:03Speaker 3: That's what I love to see. And that's what I
- 11:06Speaker 3: get back from the book is just being able to
- 11:09Speaker 3: help somebody else in their life.
- 11:13Speaker 1: So you published this beautiful book that you guys will
- 11:17Speaker 1: see in a moment. Not yet. I'll show you all
- 11:19Speaker 1: the cover in a moment. How did it feel to
- 11:22Speaker 1: have your baby, your book? Because your book is your baby.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Yes.
- 11:27Speaker 1: When you first had it in your hands.
- 11:31Speaker 3: I was in the airport and it came the day
- 11:34Speaker 3: I was leaving to go on a trip. And it
- 11:39Speaker 3: came and I was like, I'm all in the holding
- 11:44Speaker 3: my book up, taking pictures with my book in the airport.
- 11:50Speaker 3: It was exciting, emotional, and I celebrated that moment. I
- 11:56Speaker 3: loved it. It was like I really birthed this baby
- 12:00Speaker 3: right here. It amazes me to see how far I
- 12:06Speaker 3: became with writing the book and then now my second book.
- 12:12Speaker 1: All right, you guys. I know y'all saying, okay, Treece,
- 12:15Speaker 1: we don't talk about this book. We don't talk about
- 12:17Speaker 1: her being an author. We want to look at this book. Y'all,
- 12:21Speaker 1: when I tell you diva, this cover is diva. So,
- 12:28Speaker 1: we are about to bring up the cover of I
- 12:31Speaker 1: Am Pretty Treece. Y'all look at this.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Yes.
- 12:39Speaker 1: What's the inspiration to this.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Cover yes it's bold elegant and it tells you a
- 12:49Speaker 3: story without you even opening the book.
- 12:56Speaker 1: I'm getting sister girl I got this and if I
- 12:59Speaker 1: don't have this I'm about to have this it's giving
- 13:04Speaker 1: watching me grow just Just why that cover? It's crazy.
- 13:14Speaker 1: It's simple. Just why that cover?
- 13:19Speaker 3: I chose that cover because I wanted to signify myself.
- 13:24Speaker 3: I wanted it to be about not taking anything away
- 13:29Speaker 3: from anybody. It's just I am Patrice. It's just that
- 13:32Speaker 3: one person. And you, I, anybody else could be a Patrice.
- 13:38Speaker 3: So and that's why it's a movement. So I wanted
- 13:40Speaker 3: to be just elegant, but just something classy to show
- 13:46Speaker 3: that you can be homeless for three years. But then
- 13:50Speaker 3: this is what you look like after the fact. So
- 13:53Speaker 3: you can look like what you want to look like.
- 13:55Speaker 3: But just know I went through the hard times. I
- 13:58Speaker 3: went through all the struggles. And this is what I
- 14:00Speaker 3: came out looking like.
- 14:03Speaker 1: So now here's the time for you to tell us
- 14:07Speaker 1: about the book. We already talked about the cover. We
- 14:10Speaker 1: already talked about you becoming an author. Now it's time
- 14:13Speaker 1: for you to tell us a little bit about the book,
- 14:17Speaker 1: I Am Patrice.
- 14:19Speaker 3: So the book is a true story book. It is
- 14:23Speaker 3: based off of my life when I was much younger,
- 14:26Speaker 3: in my 20s. And the book takes you through me
- 14:33Speaker 3: moving to California to be with a family member. And
- 14:35Speaker 3: the family member was going through a traumatic experience. separation
- 14:39Speaker 3: and divorce. And she put me out, but she dropped
- 14:43Speaker 3: me off at a homeless shelter. And I stayed homeless
- 14:47Speaker 3: for three years in Long Beach, California. And literally I
- 14:53Speaker 3: worked every day, but I lived in a homeless shelter.
- 14:56Speaker 3: And it takes you through what I endured in a
- 15:01Speaker 3: homeless shelter coming, how I became out of the homeless
- 15:05Speaker 3: shelter and as well as the growth after that. And
- 15:08Speaker 3: then when I got saved, I got saved while I
- 15:11Speaker 3: was homeless. So it talks about my spirituality and it
- 15:14Speaker 3: talks about my growth once I accepted God in my life.
- 15:26Speaker 1: That's amazing. How did you keep Patrice alive? When going
- 15:34Speaker 1: through all of this. That you were going through.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Faith and a bunch of angels. Faith in God. And
- 15:41Speaker 3: I never lost faith. I just knew I needed to
- 15:44Speaker 3: be back in church. And that was something I wasn't doing.
- 15:48Speaker 3: And not only that. But now. I talked to God
- 15:52Speaker 3: multiple times. During the day. Then I wasn't even thinking
- 15:55Speaker 3: about God. Me being honest. And so now I am.
- 16:02Speaker 3: seeing myself in a whole nother light when I got
- 16:04Speaker 3: saved on the street corner. And so with that being said,
- 16:08Speaker 3: it is, it's just a whole nother tone for me.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Like I could conquer the world now. And before they
- 16:16Speaker 3: say that, you know, the rich people are happy. I
- 16:19Speaker 3: was happy or poor to be honest. I had a
- 16:23Speaker 3: better life. I didn't stress. I didn't worry. I didn't have,
- 16:27Speaker 3: I didn't think about who the president was. I, I
- 16:30Speaker 3: just lived every day with no thought, no care, no
- 16:32Speaker 3: stress in my life. And I know that's crazy to say,
- 16:35Speaker 3: but I was more peaceful homeless than I am having
- 16:39Speaker 3: a beautiful home, jobs, cars, all of those things. Because
- 16:43Speaker 3: we let those things control us. We don't allow God
- 16:47Speaker 3: to lead us. That's the biggest difference in this situation.
- 16:52Speaker 1: So when God was giving you all the insights for
- 16:57Speaker 1: this book, What were you saying? You're like, hold up, Lord.
- 17:02Speaker 1: You want me to do what?
- 17:03Speaker 3: The crazy thing. This is the craziest story because I
- 17:10Speaker 3: decided I wasn't writing a book. And a friend of
- 17:13Speaker 3: mine connected me with a prophet. And I had never
- 17:16Speaker 3: discussed writing a book with anyone. But this prophet that
- 17:20Speaker 3: she connected me to, we talked. And he said, ooh.
- 17:26Speaker 3: God gave me a word for you. And I was like,
- 17:28Speaker 3: what is it? And he said, God told me to
- 17:30Speaker 3: tell you to go ahead and write the book. And
- 17:33Speaker 3: I was like, whoa, like that was confirmation. And I
- 17:37Speaker 3: still didn't write the book after that. It took me
- 17:40Speaker 3: another two years after that to write the book.
- 17:46Speaker 1: So in other words, you were being hard headed.
- 17:49Speaker 3: Yes. And God will show enough, put you down and
- 17:53Speaker 3: make you, but I did like, I started looking for
- 17:59Speaker 3: publishing companies. I was just winging it on my own,
- 18:02Speaker 3: trying to figure out, okay, how do you get a
- 18:04Speaker 3: book out? Because you see people that are self-publishing and
- 18:07Speaker 3: then you see published. And there are two different things. Self-published,
- 18:12Speaker 3: it's going to be on Amazon. For me, I am
- 18:16Speaker 3: published through a publishing company. And so I had all
- 18:22Speaker 3: these different type of things that were accessible to me
- 18:26Speaker 3: through the publishing company. So it helped me to grow
- 18:29Speaker 3: a little bit stronger and faster when the book came
- 18:33Speaker 3: out Christmas day.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Christmas day.
- 18:37Speaker 3: The book came out Christmas day.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Oh, so being with a publishing company was more beneficial
- 18:46Speaker 1: to you.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Yes.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Okay. I interviewed authors who have done the indie route
- 18:54Speaker 1: and have, authors that have done the self-published route. So
- 18:57Speaker 1: it's great to see how some work for some and
- 19:00Speaker 1: some work for others. That's why I tell a lot
- 19:03Speaker 1: of people that publishing a book is not stone on
- 19:10Speaker 1: how to do it. Right. There's so many ways. You
- 19:14Speaker 1: just have to figure out which one works best for you.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Yes.
- 19:20Speaker 1: If you had to give the readers one take away,
- 19:24Speaker 1: from I Am Patrice. What would that takeaway be?
- 19:29Speaker 3: Don't give up on your dreams. Don't give up on
- 19:31Speaker 3: something you believe in. Go for it. Don't never let
- 19:35Speaker 3: anything hold you back. Go for whatever it is that
- 19:38Speaker 3: you want in your life.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Okay, so you guys got that. So remember I told
- 19:44Speaker 1: you that there was a session of this show that
- 19:49Speaker 1: I really couldn't tell you about, but you will see
- 19:51Speaker 1: later on? Yes. Are you ready?
- 19:55Speaker 3: I am ready.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Okay.
- 19:57Speaker 3: I am ready.
- 19:59Speaker 1: I call it the fun question, so I'm about to
- 20:01Speaker 1: put you back in the hot seat with me. Okay.
- 20:03Speaker 1: So let's roll on back over here to the hot seat. Okay.
- 20:09Speaker 1: You know the biggest thing right now is a lot
- 20:12Speaker 1: of authors are getting their books on television, okay? I
- 20:17Speaker 1: always used to do this spiel where I asked authors
- 20:21Speaker 1: who would do this and who would do that. We're
- 20:23Speaker 1: going to do that. But I've noticed looking at BET,
- 20:29Speaker 1: BET +, Paramount, Tubi, especially Tubi. Tubi is very creative. Yeah,
- 20:37Speaker 1: very creative. So a lot of authors are taking their
- 20:40Speaker 1: books and they're having them into movies. So guess what?
- 20:46Speaker 1: That's Paramount. Paramount is, they at your door there say,
- 20:51Speaker 1: you know what, we love the book I Am Patrice.
- 20:53Speaker 1: It's giving us deeper vibes, okay? We want to make
- 20:58Speaker 1: this into a movie. We have to cast some characters.
- 21:03Speaker 1: But we want you to help us out with this casting.
- 21:06Speaker 1: But we just want you to help us out with
- 21:08Speaker 1: one character. And that is you, Patrice. You get the
- 21:14Speaker 1: honor of playing you in the movie, I Am Patrice.
- 21:21Speaker 3: I would say Taraji P. Henson.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Okay, so why Taraji?
- 21:25Speaker 3: Because her energy, just her ambition alone. And then I've
- 21:32Speaker 3: met her before. So I feel like she would play
- 21:36Speaker 3: the part to the T. Like she would be amazing.
- 21:40Speaker 3: At the part. And she just gave me a whole
- 21:43Speaker 3: lot of life on. Why did I get married.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Again.
- 21:47Speaker 3: Because she. She just set the tone. And I could
- 21:51Speaker 3: see all of me in her. But I think she
- 21:53Speaker 3: could definitely play the role. Alright.
- 21:56Speaker 1: So we have Taraji P. Henson. So now. Authors do collaborate.
- 22:04Speaker 1: So they was like. We're going to have somebody to
- 22:05Speaker 1: help you out. Because we know this is your first one.
- 22:08Speaker 1: And we want you to feel comfortable. What author would
- 22:11Speaker 1: you want to collaborate with you on the movie? I
- 22:16Speaker 1: am Patrice. Any author. Who would you choose and why?
- 22:23Speaker 3: I would choose probably Jermaine Jermaine Brooks and he's a
- 22:36Speaker 3: fellow author and we're actually getting ready to do a
- 22:40Speaker 3: book signing at Barnes and Nobles on November the 7th
- 22:42Speaker 3: in Mobile, Alabama together and I would choose him because
- 22:46Speaker 3: I've read his book and I think he can fill
- 22:51Speaker 3: me into expressing what I Am Patrice is all about.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Alright so we have Jermaine Brooks as collaborating author Taraji P.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Ensign is going to play you but you know it
- 23:08Speaker 1: every single movie has to have that title soundtrack. Yes.
- 23:14Speaker 1: What does your title soundtrack mean?
- 23:23Speaker 3: Donnie McCurklin, We Fall Down But We Get Up.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Listen here, that song right there. Listen. Have y'all really,
- 23:32Speaker 1: really listened to the words of that song? I have.
- 23:36Speaker 1: That song will make you buckle.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Yes.
- 23:41Speaker 1: I don't care who you are.
- 23:42Speaker 3: That's a song I got saved on.
- 23:45Speaker 1: What?
- 23:47Speaker 3: The choir was singing that song that day. And I
- 23:50Speaker 3: was standing outside on the corner.
- 23:52Speaker 1: That song will make you buckle. All right. So we
- 23:58Speaker 1: got Taraji P. Harrison playing you. Jermaine Brooks is going
- 24:02Speaker 1: to assist you. And Donnie McClurkin, We Fall Down. Girl,
- 24:08Speaker 1: that's a movie to watch out for. Yes. You can't
- 24:15Speaker 1: touch that, Tyler.
