- 0:01Speaker 1: I am following the river down the highway through the
- 0:06Speaker 1: cradle of.
- 0:06Speaker 2: The Civil War.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I'm going to Graceland, Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee. I'm going
- 0:14Speaker 1: to Graceland.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Some prefer the Paul Simon version. But it's hard to
- 0:21Speaker 3: say Willie Nelson's ever done.
- 0:23Speaker 2: A bad version of anything. including going to Graceland there.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Of course, we hear from the iconic Willie Nelson at
- 0:29Speaker 3: 3 o'clock hour every Tuesday. And on this Texan Tuesday
- 0:34Speaker 3: in the 3 o'clock hour, we visit with Greg Tepper,
- 0:36Speaker 3: the editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, who the
- 0:41Speaker 3: impression I got from you, Tim, between over the weekend
- 0:44Speaker 3: and what we've done this week is that you are
- 0:48Speaker 3: definitely ensconced. Not only are we knee-deep into the football
- 0:53Speaker 3: season now with the NFL two weeks in and obviously
- 0:56Speaker 3: what's happened with college football and high school football, all
- 1:00Speaker 3: this stuff kind of comes at you in a tidal
- 1:02Speaker 3: wave right now, a rush with it, with everything you got,
- 1:04Speaker 3: your daily responsibilities, calling your game on Friday night, all
- 1:09Speaker 3: this kind of stuff, right?
- 1:11Speaker 1: Yeah, it comes in waves, right?
- 1:15Speaker 4: One of the things that I think is fun and
- 1:18Speaker 4: also terrifying about this job is that there's almost no
- 1:22Speaker 4: opportunity to sit back and reflect on what you just saw.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Because now, that time has become truncated. Basically, by Tuesday morning,
- 1:33Speaker 4: you need to be on to the next week because
- 1:35Speaker 4: it's coming fast and furious. We got games on Thursday
- 1:37Speaker 4: and whether it's in the college ranks or the high
- 1:39Speaker 4: school ranks coming. So you've got to get all your
- 1:42Speaker 4: stuff done, get all of it out of your system
- 1:44Speaker 4: by Monday. Because then on Tuesday, it's got to be
- 1:47Speaker 4: on to the next one because it just comes fast
- 1:49Speaker 4: and furious. And especially when you're covering the state holistically
- 1:54Speaker 4: from widespread. Any opportunity to sit back and look back
- 1:59Speaker 4: too far, I think you're just like, you're losing time
- 2:03Speaker 4: because there's so much on the horizon that's coming. You
- 2:06Speaker 4: got to be moving forward even when you're looking back.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Here's where I am reminded weekly of the scope and
- 2:16Speaker 3: the expanse of the state of Texas. And I know
- 2:18Speaker 3: you would appreciate this. Because sometimes you catch part of
- 2:21Speaker 3: our broadcasts, the Texas Longhorn broadcasts. And one of the
- 2:25Speaker 3: things that, and we started this a few years ago
- 2:28Speaker 3: with our studio anchor, because here's a little bit of
- 2:31Speaker 3: inside stuff behind the curtain stuff. Our studio anchor is
- 2:33Speaker 3: not in the state of Texas. He's in the state
- 2:36Speaker 3: of North Carolina. That's where the network studios are, where
- 2:38Speaker 3: it all goes into that. So we have a new
- 2:41Speaker 3: studio anchor this year, and Jeff Marson, who's really sharp
- 2:44Speaker 3: and for years had been the studio anchor for Mississippi State.
- 2:47Speaker 3: So he knows the SEC inside out. He's very, very
- 2:49Speaker 3: good on that. But he needed a little bit of
- 2:53Speaker 3: education on some of the other colleges in the state
- 2:56Speaker 3: of Texas. And I started doing this even with the
- 2:59Speaker 3: guy we had before him, who had been the Vanderbilt
- 3:02Speaker 3: studio anchor before he was ours.
- 3:04Speaker 2: And that was to acquaint them on.
- 3:07Speaker 3: The large scale of scope of colleges and college football
- 3:11Speaker 3: programs in the state of Texas. This was an idea
- 3:14Speaker 3: I got once when I was driving from Manhattan, Kansas,
- 3:17Speaker 3: back to Kansas City after Texas had a day game
- 3:20Speaker 3: at K-State. And I'm listening to their scoreboard show. And
- 3:24Speaker 3: that dude is knee-deep in JUCO scores. Because, you know,
- 3:28Speaker 3: JUCOs are big in Kansas. Yeah, Butler County, Cloud, all
- 3:32Speaker 3: of those, Coffeyville, all those. And so I got to thinking,
- 3:36Speaker 3: I thought, you know, we don't have to go to
- 3:38Speaker 3: the JUCO level, like Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine dives
- 3:42Speaker 3: that deep into it. However, we could do at least
- 3:45Speaker 3: a Division II and Division III in addition to the
- 3:47Speaker 3: FBS and FCS scores. So what I then drew up
- 3:52Speaker 3: the following week, and we've done it ever since– is
- 3:56Speaker 3: to have like a scoreboard thing, and it's usually like
- 4:00Speaker 3: the last one he does.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Like in the case of the other night, pretty late.
- 4:03Speaker 3: In the evening, and we're still waiting to visit with Sark,
- 4:07Speaker 3: or we just finished with him, and we were done
- 4:09Speaker 3: with the player interviews.
- 4:10Speaker 2: We've got a couple more segments we've got to fill.
- 4:12Speaker 3: So what I do is I have him do all
- 4:16Speaker 3: the SEC score. Well, in the state of Texas, there's
- 4:19Speaker 3: only one other SEC team. You'll recap what happened with
- 4:21Speaker 3: A & M, which was a doozy last Saturday. Then
- 4:24Speaker 3: the other P4s, in that case, the Big 12 with TCU, Baylor,
- 4:27Speaker 3: and Tech, the ACC with SMU. Then I have him
- 4:30Speaker 3: go to the other FBS G6 schools, so the other
- 4:38Speaker 3: American conference schools.
- 4:41Speaker 2: And then beyond that, then I have him go FCS.
- 4:43Speaker 3: So he goes Southland Conference and then United Athletic Conference,
- 4:47Speaker 3: him do that. then Division II with Lone Star Conference.
- 4:51Speaker 3: And by the time he gets down to Division III
- 4:53Speaker 3: and he's doing American Southwest and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association,
- 4:57Speaker 3: some folks may be saying.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Where exactly is Schreiner?
- 5:02Speaker 3: Where exactly is Southwestern University?
- 5:05Speaker 2: That kind of thing.
- 5:06Speaker 3: But that's always a weekly reminder of the scope because
- 5:09Speaker 3: there's college football going on at all levels in this state.
- 5:13Speaker 4: What's so fascinating to me is that basically as you
- 5:15Speaker 4: were going through that, you took a tour of our magazine.
- 5:19Speaker 4: Like that is exactly, if you go and you look
- 5:21Speaker 4: at the way that our magazine is laid out, we start,
- 5:23Speaker 4: it used to be forever and ever, we started with
- 5:25Speaker 4: the Southwest Conference. Then Southwest Conference goes by the wayside.
- 5:28Speaker 4: The Big 12 became the conference of record in the state.
- 5:31Speaker 4: And now we start with the SEC. The SEC is
- 5:34Speaker 4: the biggest conference that the Texas team's playing. We do
- 5:36Speaker 4: that one, move on to the Big 12, et cetera.
- 5:38Speaker 4: You actually flow perfectly through the magazine, but you're right.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Like that's the thing. There's now, I think like one
- 5:45Speaker 1: of the things whenever.
- 5:45Speaker 4: I do like, I'll do like some public speaking. One
- 5:49Speaker 4: of the things I'll lead with is I think people
- 5:51Speaker 4: know it's like 1,500 high schools across the state. I'll
- 5:54Speaker 4: tell people there's 50 colleges, college football teams in Texas,
- 5:57Speaker 4: and that catches them almost.
- 5:59Speaker 1: More by surprise.
- 6:00Speaker 4: Because I think that they are thinking of Texas and
- 6:02Speaker 4: A & M, and maybe they're thinking of Texas State, right?
- 6:05Speaker 1: Or they're thinking of UTEP.
- 6:07Speaker 4: But they're probably not thinking of Southwestern Assemblies of God.
- 6:11Speaker 4: They're probably not thinking of UTRGV. And by the way,
- 6:15Speaker 4: that's to say that it's a pretty good year.
- 6:17Speaker 1: In the non-FPS ranks in Texas right now.
- 6:21Speaker 4: You've got two top 10 FCS teams in Tarleton and
- 6:23Speaker 4: SFA already.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Who have looked fantastic to start the year.
- 6:31Speaker 4: You go on the Division II level, you've got UT
- 6:33Speaker 4: Permian Basin and Midwestern State are off to really nice
- 6:36Speaker 4: starts as well. It's a good year in non-FBS, and
- 6:39Speaker 4: it's one of those things that in my job, you
- 6:45Speaker 4: almost get more, I think it's the same way with
- 6:47Speaker 4: high school, you get more gratification the deeper you go
- 6:51Speaker 4: because you realize, oh wait, there's good ball down here.
- 6:53Speaker 4: If you're a 6A fan, Go watch some 3A ball
- 6:56Speaker 4: and you'll be like, man, some really good football teams. Yeah,
- 6:59Speaker 4: there's not as many guys on the sideline, but there's
- 7:01Speaker 4: some really good football teams. That, I think, is probably
- 7:03Speaker 4: the magic and probably just what doesn't happen in any
- 7:06Speaker 4: other state and probably why our state is so singular.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt.
- 7:11Speaker 3: And while the magazine probably does a little deeper dive,
- 7:14Speaker 3: for example, you probably.
- 7:16Speaker 2: won't hear.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Our studio anchor give too many Texas college scores, not
- 7:20Speaker 3: too much NAIA stuff. And by the way, there's a
- 7:24Speaker 3: new name, isn't it, for the old Southwestern Assemblies of
- 7:27Speaker 3: God College?
- 7:28Speaker 2: It's a one-person name.
- 7:29Speaker 4: Oh, did they change their name to Texas Wesleyan?
- 7:34Speaker 2: No, there's another one. It's a person's name.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Nelson.
- 7:38Speaker 2: That's it.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Nelson. Thank you. That's right.
- 7:41Speaker 3: That's it.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Kind of update my memory.
- 7:43Speaker 2: That's right.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Located right there in the heart of Ellis County. But
- 7:49Speaker 3: from other levels, obviously, we strive to do that. Same
- 7:51Speaker 3: thing that you guys do. And that is inclusive of
- 7:55Speaker 3: your Texas Power Poll, that college football power poll that
- 8:00Speaker 3: you and the staff and Mike Craven all put together
- 8:03Speaker 3: each week and do this. And I noticed the drop
- 8:05Speaker 3: of Texas A & M down there to the number
- 8:09Speaker 3: four slot. How about your thoughts on the Aggies last week?
- 8:13Speaker 4: I did one of my least favorite things on Saturday
- 8:16Speaker 4: in the fourth quarter of that game against Kentucky, which
- 8:19Speaker 4: is that I texted Mike Craven and said, you were
- 8:23Speaker 4: absolutely right. Because, and he took it with the amount
- 8:27Speaker 4: of stride that you think Mike Craven took it with.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Because even if you go back and you read what
- 8:33Speaker 4: he wrote after their.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Win over Arizona State, he.
- 8:39Speaker 4: And even though they won comfortably, won by like three
- 8:41Speaker 4: touchdowns in that game, he pointed out, he goes there,
- 8:45Speaker 4: he's like, something's rotten here. Like there's something going on.
- 8:49Speaker 4: And he kind of targeted the offense and specifically Marcel Reed.
- 8:53Speaker 4: And just said, right now he's not carrying his weight.
- 8:56Speaker 4: They're getting away with it because the defense is forced
- 8:58Speaker 4: some turnovers. They're getting away with it because they're making
- 9:01Speaker 4: some plays in special teams and winning field position battles
- 9:04Speaker 4: and stuff like that.
- 9:05Speaker 1: And you can win like that.
- 9:07Speaker 4: He goes, but basically, he kind of says, time's going
- 9:09Speaker 4: to run out if he doesn't kind of take that step.
- 9:11Speaker 1: And time ran out last week. And basically, Kentucky... Didn't
- 9:15Speaker 1: turn the ball over.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Kentucky was the aggressor on defense, and Kentucky put them
- 9:19Speaker 4: in a position where they made Marcel Reed put the
- 9:22Speaker 4: ball up. And he was just inaccurate, plain and simple.
- 9:26Speaker 4: And that's kind of been the knock on him. He
- 9:28Speaker 4: can't make the throws consistently. He makes some dazzling plays.
- 9:32Speaker 4: but he can't make those throws consistently. I think that
- 9:35Speaker 4: was all of A & M' s worst fears kind of
- 9:37Speaker 4: come to fruition there. I thought the defense played okay.
- 9:42Speaker 4: I thought they were put in some tough spots because
- 9:45Speaker 4: of some turnovers as well as because of some field
- 9:49Speaker 4: position issues. But I thought the defense played okay. But
- 9:52Speaker 4: the offense is in a tough way right now. It's
- 9:54Speaker 4: a bad way. And by the way, it's not like
- 9:58Speaker 4: the schedule gets any easier. considering they go this weekend
- 10:02Speaker 4: to what has to be a frippy, upset LSU team.
- 10:07Speaker 4: on the road to that valley like there's at least
- 10:11Speaker 4: six teams on their schedule that are as good or
- 10:13Speaker 4: better than kentucky and if they're not beating kentucky at
- 10:15Speaker 4: home as what 18 point favorites then it could be
- 10:19Speaker 4: a long season for the aggies.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Yeah it's an angry lsu team uh as we visit
- 10:26Speaker 3: with greg tepper of uh Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 10:30Speaker 2: And the other one, I wanted to get your thoughts
- 10:32Speaker 2: on SMU. I mean, it's been said about, you know.
- 10:35Speaker 3: SMU that had a shot to get in the playoff,
- 10:38Speaker 3: and maybe they still do.
- 10:39Speaker 2: They still have to deal with Miami.
- 10:40Speaker 3: They've still got some other big games, but it definitely
- 10:44Speaker 3: was a sting. It definitely hurt them taking a step
- 10:46Speaker 3: back with that loss at Louisville.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, look, it's one of those things where
- 10:52Speaker 4: on the road against a good nationally ranked Louisville team.
- 10:56Speaker 1: If you guys didn't know, Louisville's pretty good.
- 10:59Speaker 4: They went toe-to-toe with them, and they went play-for-play with them.
- 11:03Speaker 4: But in the end, what ended up costing them is
- 11:07Speaker 4: that they just turned the ball over too much.
- 11:11Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 11:12Speaker 4: You can't be like that on the road and do that.
- 11:16Speaker 1: They were minus three in turnover margin. You can't be
- 11:19Speaker 1: like that.
- 11:20Speaker 4: And there are a couple of throws that Kevin Jennings
- 11:23Speaker 4: is going to want back.
- 11:24Speaker 1: And that's kind of what turned the game. I'm not
- 11:27Speaker 1: here to bury SMU.
- 11:28Speaker 4: I think that they went on the road and played
- 11:30Speaker 4: a tough team and they came up short. Um, there,
- 11:33Speaker 4: there were a couple of things that, that they need
- 11:35Speaker 4: to do a little bit better. I think they need
- 11:36Speaker 4: to run the ball a little bit better, uh, more
- 11:38Speaker 4: consistently if they're going to get where they want to go. Uh, look,
- 11:41Speaker 4: this is a, you know, although I thought that Kendrick
- 11:43Speaker 4: Raphael had a nice game, they, they just need to
- 11:48Speaker 4: shake it off and not let this one of those
- 11:50Speaker 4: things where don't let one game beat you twice. That's
- 11:53Speaker 4: one of the things that I keep coming back to.
- 11:54Speaker 4: If they are able to, you know, with the way
- 11:56Speaker 4: that college football is now, you can take a loss
- 11:59Speaker 4: and you can still be in the mix, especially a
- 12:02Speaker 4: ranked loss on the road in a competitive game. SMU's
- 12:05Speaker 4: still in it. But their margin just got smaller. Their
- 12:09Speaker 4: margin just shrunk and they can't afford one more of those.
- 12:13Speaker 1: That's the thing.
- 12:13Speaker 4: And you'd rather that you lose your margin in week
- 12:16Speaker 4: 10 as opposed to week three. But such as the
- 12:19Speaker 4: breaks there on the hilltop, they've got to come home
- 12:21Speaker 4: and regroup and make sure they don't let something.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Like that happen again.
- 12:24Speaker 3: All right, let's move to the high school ranks. Here's
- 12:27Speaker 3: the well-worn out question. Is DeSoto back?
- 12:31Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, here's the thing about DeSoto, and I'm
- 12:34Speaker 4: going to sound like a broken record here about the Eagles,
- 12:37Speaker 4: because they go and they get a win over a
- 12:39Speaker 4: previously unbeaten Burleson Centennial team. I think they are better
- 12:42Speaker 4: than Burleson Centennial. That's not necessarily surprising. Their defense was really,
- 12:47Speaker 4: really good in this game. They were able to bottle
- 12:49Speaker 4: up Burleson Centennial and especially reduce them to essentially not
- 12:53Speaker 4: being able to run the ball.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:56Speaker 4: They, the issues for me and where I like, again,
- 13:00Speaker 4: I hold DeSoto to an extremely high standard.
- 13:02Speaker 1: They've won three titles in the last four years.
- 13:03Speaker 4: So when we talk about is DeSoto back, the question
- 13:06Speaker 4: is not, are they going to make the playoffs? Yes,
- 13:08Speaker 4: they're going to make the playoffs. Are they, my question is,
- 13:10Speaker 4: can they win a state championship? And my concerns for
- 13:13Speaker 4: them continue to be that offensively.
- 13:15Speaker 1: They're really one dimensional.
- 13:17Speaker 4: They cannot throw the ball consistently. I mean, their leading
- 13:21Speaker 4: passer in this game was Sir Rod Baker. He threw
- 13:26Speaker 4: the ball. He went eight for 10.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Pretty good passer. Turns out having.
- 13:29Speaker 4: One of the best players in Texas high school football
- 13:31Speaker 4: is great. The problem is he's playing out of position.
- 13:33Speaker 4: And that's not a long-term solution, in my opinion. And
- 13:36Speaker 4: that's not something that they can do. They need to
- 13:39Speaker 4: find a way to get the ball out on the
- 13:40Speaker 4: edge and make it so that they're not stacking the box.
- 13:46Speaker 4: Having Theroux Baker is fantastic. They are going to need
- 13:49Speaker 4: to find another element to that offense to get where
- 13:51Speaker 4: they want to go.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Because, by the way, I know we've.
- 13:53Speaker 4: All talked about them dropping down and, oh, wow, look
- 13:58Speaker 4: how good they are.
- 13:59Speaker 1: I will just tell you this.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Take a look at 5A Division I and look at
- 14:02Speaker 4: the other teams in that classification. Smithson Valley has looked spectacular.
- 14:08Speaker 4: Richmond Randall, 3-0. Frisco Lone Star, really strong. Port Arthur Memorial. Angleton,
- 14:14Speaker 4: I think, is flying under the radar. I think this idea,
- 14:16Speaker 4: I will say this, I'm ready to now say four
- 14:19Speaker 4: games in that, yes, I think DeSoto is certainly on
- 14:22Speaker 4: that short list of teams that can win a state championship.
- 14:24Speaker 4: But any thought that they were a prohibitive favorite in
- 14:27Speaker 4: 5A Division I, I think has gone out the window.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I look at Smithson Valley, and you know me,
- 14:32Speaker 3: I'm a Dodger fan. I kind of look at them
- 14:33Speaker 3: like I did the Dodgers in June, a two-time defending
- 14:36Speaker 3: champ who looks every bit the part. Now, the Dodgers
- 14:38Speaker 3: had a horrible August, and they're kind of recovering themselves.
- 14:41Speaker 3: So we'll see what happens with Smithson going forward. But
- 14:45Speaker 3: Larry Hill's got it rolling, and there's no reason to
- 14:47Speaker 3: think they won't be a contender and maybe coming out
- 14:50Speaker 3: of Region IV, be in that championship game yet again.
- 14:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I think we take them for granted just because
- 14:56Speaker 4: they're not flashy. It's a very Larry Hill coach ball club.
- 15:00Speaker 4: They're not flashy. Now, they are flashier than they have been.
- 15:03Speaker 4: Ty Knutson, their quarterback, the Texas commit, is a star,
- 15:06Speaker 4: I think. They have a legit blue chipper at the
- 15:08Speaker 4: quarterback spot. Hunter Haug, their Texas Tech commit, in the
- 15:11Speaker 4: first half last week, had a 40-yard touchdown catch and
- 15:15Speaker 4: three defensive touchdowns in.
- 15:17Speaker 1: The first half against Porter Maynard. Yeah. They're legit.
- 15:21Speaker 4: And I think that that Smithson Valley, maybe it's just
- 15:24Speaker 4: because they're in the San Antonio area and San Antonio
- 15:26Speaker 4: has been been relatively down the past decade or so
- 15:30Speaker 4: kind of from a statewide perspective. But man, like, like,
- 15:33Speaker 4: take the scales off your eyes as far as Smithson
- 15:35Speaker 4: Valley is concerned, because they are. and if you've forgotten
- 15:39Speaker 4: about them, they're the guys with the 5A Division I crown.
- 15:42Speaker 4: Just because there's another team there that has a 6A
- 15:44Speaker 4: crown doesn't mean that they got the one.
- 15:46Speaker 2: The Smiths and Valleys got.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Let me also say this, and it may not be
- 15:49Speaker 3: a popular opinion in these parts, and I want to
- 15:52Speaker 3: make sure I'm clear in saying this. I'm not saying
- 15:54Speaker 3: there's a quote-unquote changing of the guard in 6A in
- 15:58Speaker 3: the greater Austin area.
- 15:59Speaker 2: I will say this.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Um you know west lake does not look as dominant
- 16:04Speaker 3: as they have been in the past lake travis comes
- 16:06Speaker 3: off losing to cornerstone uh and i just last friday
- 16:10Speaker 3: night it was a marvelous ball game at six lead
- 16:12Speaker 3: changes but round rock did emerge with the win at
- 16:15Speaker 3: vandegrift i'm not saying round rock's better on them and
- 16:18Speaker 3: by the way round rock will get a chance to
- 16:19Speaker 3: prove itself because they're now in the same district with
- 16:21Speaker 3: west lake and lake travis but um Maybe between that
- 16:26Speaker 3: and an unbeaten Cedar Ridge, maybe we're starting to see
- 16:29Speaker 3: a little more.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Balance out in 6A in these parts.
- 16:32Speaker 1: I like to think about gaps, right?
- 16:34Speaker 4: Okay, and so for a long time, we talked about
- 16:35Speaker 4: the gap between Austin and San Antonio, that Austin's just
- 16:38Speaker 4: had San Antonio's number, plain and simple.
- 16:41Speaker 1: I think that gap is closing.
- 16:43Speaker 4: I think part of it is that Austin's maybe falling
- 16:46Speaker 4: back to the pack and San Antonio is on the rise.
- 16:48Speaker 4: Teams like Johnson have been really, really good, a team
- 16:51Speaker 4: that I think is a legit state championship contender. The
- 16:53Speaker 4: other thing is that I think that that gap between
- 16:56Speaker 4: that upper, upper, upper crust, the Lake Travis, the West Lake,
- 17:00Speaker 4: the Vandegrift, I think that gap has narrowed because I
- 17:04Speaker 4: think that this, what you would call probably, again, I
- 17:07Speaker 4: don't mean this disrespectfully, but the middle class of high
- 17:10Speaker 4: school football in Austin is rising up. Round Rock, you
- 17:15Speaker 4: mentioned that. Cedar Ridge has been fantastic. There's a lot
- 17:18Speaker 4: of good football teams in the Austin area that that
- 17:22Speaker 4: if you are only paying attention to the big brand names,
- 17:26Speaker 4: then you might end up being shocked on a Friday
- 17:28Speaker 4: night whenever Round Rock goes and beats Vandergrift. Those are
- 17:31Speaker 4: the types of things that I'm looking at, and I
- 17:33Speaker 4: think that gap between the Tier 1 and Tier 2,
- 17:37Speaker 4: I think that gap has closed, which should make for
- 17:40Speaker 4: a real dynamite district season and some real fun playoff
- 17:44Speaker 4: chases as we get into.
- 17:46Speaker 1: when it hopefully starts cooling down.
- 17:48Speaker 3: All right.
- 17:48Speaker 2: On to the meanest thing we do each week.
- 17:50Speaker 3: I give you three games and, uh, it'll be different.
- 17:53Speaker 3: Now you've got a Corker this week. You've got North
- 17:56Speaker 3: Shore and Tascosita. So that's removed from the equation here,
- 18:00Speaker 3: but I've, I've got three others and, and you give
- 18:03Speaker 3: me your choice. If you couldn't be there for a
- 18:05Speaker 3: North Shore and Tascosita, which of these three, where do
- 18:08Speaker 3: you teleport to? Uh, How about down there at Freedom
- 18:13Speaker 3: Field for Angleton, Iowa Colony? I have, this one I
- 18:18Speaker 3: think could be really a lot of fun, Bernie at
- 18:21Speaker 3: Alamo Heights. And then the other one, my old pal
- 18:25Speaker 3: Rodney Vinson doing it up with Shallow Water, and they're unbeaten,
- 18:28Speaker 3: and they've got Ida.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Lou this week. Which of these do you like?
- 18:32Speaker 4: Man, that's really what I wish you hadn't put in, Idaloo-Shallowater,
- 18:34Speaker 4: because that game's going to be great. First of all,
- 18:37Speaker 4: I think Shallowater's really strong. Idaloo might be a team
- 18:42Speaker 4: you need to upgrade your priors on. I think Idaloo's really,
- 18:45Speaker 4: really good. And the games in Shallowater should be a
- 18:48Speaker 4: fantastic ballgame out there. Fascinated by the Angleton game, because Angleton, again,
- 18:54Speaker 4: kind of doing the Angleton thing very quietly, off to
- 18:58Speaker 4: a 4-0 start. They played District 11 5A D1 play.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Richmond Randall will loom for both of these teams. But
- 19:05Speaker 4: I'm going to keep my powder dry for that one
- 19:07Speaker 4: because I want to keep– when Randall and Angleton rolls around,
- 19:10Speaker 4: I'm really interested in that one. I'm going to go
- 19:12Speaker 4: with Bernie and Alamo Heights. It's a District 13 5A
- 19:15Speaker 4: Division II opener between two state-ranked unbeaten teams. Bernie beat
- 19:20Speaker 4: Alamo Heights twice last year, and there is a chance–
- 19:23Speaker 4: I think the winner of this game is the district–
- 19:27Speaker 4: and therefore will be at least on the very short
- 19:30Speaker 4: list of being regional champion. And again, one of these
- 19:32Speaker 4: games where it wouldn't be a surprise if we saw
- 19:34Speaker 4: it twice. I love Grant Sweeney at the quarterback spot
- 19:38Speaker 4: for Bernie. Can he put it up against a really
- 19:40Speaker 4: good defense there from Alamo Heights? I think that's my
- 19:44Speaker 4: game of the week is.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Bernie and Alamo Heights.
- 19:46Speaker 2: That's a good call.
- 19:47Speaker 3: He's Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. TexasFootball.com
- 19:53Speaker 3: is where you can go to subscribe to get all
- 19:54Speaker 3: the great content and be able to.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Watch them in action.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Call North Shore to ask Casita on Friday night, plus
- 20:01Speaker 3: all the other games they have coming in through Texan
- 20:03Speaker 3: Live in their telecast. Hey, appreciate it. Have a lot
- 20:07Speaker 3: of fun this week, even as busy as it all is.
- 20:10Speaker 1: It's a lot, but it's a good kind of a lot.
- 20:12Speaker 1: You know what I mean? It's better than digging ditches.
- 20:14Speaker 2: No doubt about it. Thanks, Tepper.
- 20:15Speaker 4: All right.
- 20:16Speaker 3: That's our Tuesdays with Tepper segment. We have more coming
- 20:19Speaker 3: up on 13 Under the Zone.
