- 0:00Speaker 1: We are going to have to go straight across to
- 0:02Speaker 1: the Chief Minister and Attasha Fhiles, who joins me on
- 0:05Speaker 1: the line right now.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Good morning to your Chief Minister.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Good morning Katie, Good morning listener.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Now I know that you are pressed for time, but
- 0:12Speaker 1: we really appreciate your time this morning because you have
- 0:15Speaker 1: indeed just announced the makeup of your new cabinet and
- 0:20Speaker 1: there are a few significant changes by the look of things. Firstly,
- 0:25Speaker 1: well it looks as ow Nicole Madison is no longer
- 0:28Speaker 1: the Minister for Police.
- 0:30Speaker 3: So Katie, this is neew ministry. My ministry is focused
- 0:33Speaker 3: on driving multiple projects, but working on those challenges we
- 0:36Speaker 3: have for the territory. So I believe it's the balance
- 0:39Speaker 3: that will deliver for Territorians and provide that stability we need.
- 0:43Speaker 1: So so she has lost the police portfolio, who's taking
- 0:47Speaker 1: it on?
- 0:48Speaker 3: So Kate Warden, Minister Kate Warden is picking up police
- 0:50Speaker 3: forire and emergency services. She also has Territory Families and
- 0:54Speaker 3: the Prevention of domestic and family and sexual violence portfolio.
- 0:58Speaker 3: So I believe Kate's got the actual to really drive
- 1:01Speaker 3: through on those challenges we've seen. Nicole has been a
- 1:04Speaker 3: great police Minister. But I think that this change will
- 1:07Speaker 3: help me and my government respond to those challenges that
- 1:10Speaker 3: our community is facing.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Is it a demotion for Nicole Madison?
- 1:14Speaker 3: Oh, Katie, you know people can read into these things,
- 1:16Speaker 3: but no, she's our deputy Chief Minister. I think I
- 1:18Speaker 3: had the same questions asked when I went from being
- 1:20Speaker 3: ag to Tourism minister. All of these portfolios are incredibly
- 1:24Speaker 3: important to territorians.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Now we can see here Eva Lawla has picked up
- 1:29Speaker 1: the Treasury portfolio.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Katie.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Eva has been an amazing minister. She has such a
- 1:36Speaker 3: strong background and I've asked her to take on that
- 1:39Speaker 3: role of Treasury and I certainly look forward to working
- 1:44Speaker 3: with her to make sure that you know, the budget
- 1:46Speaker 3: that we just did deliver is a budget for all
- 1:48Speaker 3: of us. We've got a growing economy, but we need
- 1:51Speaker 3: to make sure that that prosperity is shared with all Territorians.
- 1:54Speaker 1: In some more interesting news, Selena Rubo has lost the
- 1:58Speaker 1: Attorney General's portfolio.
- 2:01Speaker 2: It's been picked up by Chancey paig So Katie.
- 2:04Speaker 3: I just mentioned I was the previous Attorney General and
- 2:06Speaker 3: Selena has done a mountain of work there with the
- 2:08Speaker 3: Aboriginal Justice Agreement, but picking up the portfolio of housing
- 2:12Speaker 3: and homelands is hugely important, particularly with an alban easy
- 2:15Speaker 3: labor government federally that are going to invest significantly. So
- 2:19Speaker 3: this is about making sure the members can get out
- 2:21Speaker 3: right across the territory delivering those key projects.
- 2:24Speaker 1: All right, Nairi r Kish a newly minted minister. What
- 2:28Speaker 1: portfolio is is she going to be taking on?
- 2:31Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 2:31Speaker 3: So, Nai, We're very excited she's joining our team. She's
- 2:34Speaker 3: picking up the Corporate and Digital Development, which is overseeing
- 2:38Speaker 3: those corporate projects within government. We've got some massive projects,
- 2:42Speaker 3: the Acacia project, which is supporting health to go to
- 2:46Speaker 3: a digital system, but also international education disabilities which she
- 2:51Speaker 3: has a strong background in, and multicultural affairs.
- 2:54Speaker 1: All right now, I mean there's a lot to take
- 2:56Speaker 1: in here. I am just obviously having a read through
- 2:58Speaker 1: it all now.
- 3:00Speaker 2: But Chief Minister, what do these changes mean?
- 3:03Speaker 1: Do you think when it comes to you're you know,
- 3:06Speaker 1: you becoming the chief Minister and the way that you're
- 3:09Speaker 1: sort of wanting to shape the Northern territory.
- 3:12Speaker 3: My key focus is to continue to strengthen the economy.
- 3:15Speaker 3: We've got a number of major projects that next generation
- 3:19Speaker 3: projects that will help us step away from that boom
- 3:21Speaker 3: bus cycle Katie, we see so often in the territory,
- 3:24Speaker 3: but also tackling those social challenges across the territory. I've
- 3:27Speaker 3: kept that portfolio of alcohol policy, which is vitally important
- 3:31Speaker 3: and one of the biggest social challenges. But I've got
- 3:34Speaker 3: a great team around me and we will deliver for
- 3:36Speaker 3: territory in Yeah.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Look, you've got a big portfolio yourself, obviously, keeping health,
- 3:41Speaker 1: keeping alcohol policy, taking on major projects, and taking on defense.
- 3:47Speaker 3: So Katie, there's a number of key projects and defense
- 3:49Speaker 3: investment in the territory and it's important that the first
- 3:52Speaker 3: Minister holds those portfolios. But we are still in the
- 3:56Speaker 3: pandemic and as much as we hope that we can
- 3:59Speaker 3: step out that pandemic and the emergency phase soon, there'll
- 4:02Speaker 3: still be some ongoing complexities. You know, we're seeing a
- 4:05Speaker 3: bit of a spike in case numbers around Australia. So
- 4:08Speaker 3: I have kept that health portfolio and also as we
- 4:11Speaker 3: step away from COVID, hopefully we certainly have worked in
- 4:16Speaker 3: that space around caring for territories and making sure they
- 4:19Speaker 3: receive those health services they need.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Now we know that one of the biggest issues that
- 4:23Speaker 1: we hear each and every day. Are the concerns that
- 4:25Speaker 1: we've got when it comes to crime. Are you confident?
- 4:28Speaker 1: You know, Kate Warden's got some massive portfolios there with
- 4:31Speaker 1: territory families and indeed police, fire and emergency services. Are
- 4:36Speaker 1: you confident that we're going to see some change in
- 4:39Speaker 1: this space?
- 4:41Speaker 3: Yes, Katie, we have to see change. That's what our
- 4:43Speaker 3: community needs. Crime and anti social behavior is a complex issue,
- 4:46Speaker 3: but I know Minister Kate Warden has the tenacity to
- 4:49Speaker 3: drive that through. I'll be heading out into regional parts
- 4:51Speaker 3: of the territory tomorrow listening to the community. We need
- 4:55Speaker 3: to make sure that we have solutions that are backed
- 4:58Speaker 3: by community, tailored to that local community. So Kate certainly
- 5:01Speaker 3: has the skills to do that job and I'm looking
- 5:04Speaker 3: forward to working with her.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Now, Minister, I can't seem to see it on this announcement,
- 5:08Speaker 1: but who's going to be the speaker?
- 5:10Speaker 3: So it should have been on that press release, Katie.
- 5:13Speaker 3: It's but the Member for Fong Limb, Mark Monahan has
- 5:16Speaker 3: been selected by our team to become the new Speaker
- 5:19Speaker 3: of the Parliament. The position was left vacant with Nariaki
- 5:23Speaker 3: joining the ministry, so we welcome Mark to that position.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Okay, so sorry it is on there.
- 5:27Speaker 1: The Member for fong Limb, Mark Monahan selected by the
- 5:30Speaker 1: caucus to become the new Speaker.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Poor old Joel Bowden.
- 5:34Speaker 1: I mean he had apparently put his hand up to
- 5:37Speaker 1: say that he would have liked to have been the
- 5:39Speaker 1: Chief Minister or taken on treasury is what the NT
- 5:42Speaker 1: News had been reporting a week or so ago.
- 5:44Speaker 2: And by the look of it, he's been left out.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Oh, Joel's an important and valuable member of our team
- 5:50Speaker 3: and he'll, you know, certainly provide us with the support.
- 5:54Speaker 3: It doesn't matter whether you're a backbench or minister. Being
- 5:57Speaker 3: a member of the parliament is important and that voice
- 5:59Speaker 3: of community needs to come through.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Okay, So Mark Monahan will be the Speaker. Now, can
- 6:04Speaker 1: I ask, Chief Minister, have you had the opportunity to
- 6:07Speaker 1: speak to Anthony Albanesi since he became the Prime minister.
- 6:11Speaker 3: So, Katie, I have left Anthony Albanezi. Of course I
- 6:14Speaker 3: caught up with him when he was in the territory.
- 6:17Speaker 3: He certainly understands the territory and I believe an Albanesi
- 6:21Speaker 3: federal Labor government will deliver for Territori and there's a
- 6:23Speaker 3: number of commitments and these portfolio allocations that my team
- 6:29Speaker 3: have got, you know, will allow us to work through
- 6:30Speaker 3: some of those key issues. But I'll perhaps give him
- 6:33Speaker 3: a day or two to catch his breath and then
- 6:35Speaker 3: touch base with him fair enough.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Now we've just spoken to Luke Gosling, the Member for Solomon.
- 6:42Speaker 1: He's putting his hand up saying that he'd like to
- 6:44Speaker 1: be the Minister for Northern Australia, but he'd take on
- 6:46Speaker 1: any of those ministries.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Do you think that would be a good thing for
- 6:50Speaker 2: the territory.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Luke has certainly been a strong voice for the Northern
- 6:54Speaker 3: Territory and historic third term as the Member for Solomon,
- 6:58Speaker 3: so I congratulate him look forward to working with him.
- 7:01Speaker 3: It's so important to have that voice of the territory
- 7:04Speaker 3: in Canberra. It certainly helps those issues which are unique
- 7:08Speaker 3: to the territory be understood.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Now, when are you swearing in the new cabinet? Is
- 7:13Speaker 1: that about to happen in a couple of minutes.
- 7:15Speaker 3: It is, Katie, so I just thought it was important
- 7:19Speaker 3: for your listeners to know that there's a strong team
- 7:21Speaker 3: that will deliver for them and wanted to share that
- 7:24Speaker 3: news with you, but we'll now head across to the
- 7:27Speaker 3: Government House for all the formalities and speak to other
- 7:30Speaker 3: local media and then we'll be getting out hitting the
- 7:32Speaker 3: ground running. As I said, I'm heading out of Darwin,
- 7:35Speaker 3: down the track and looking forward to it.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Well, Chief Finison, Natasha Files.
- 7:39Speaker 1: We appreciate you taking the time to let our listeners
- 7:42Speaker 1: know the cabinet makeup and we will take them through
- 7:45Speaker 1: all of those portfolios in just a couple of moments.
- 7:47Speaker 2: But we appreciate your time this morning. Thank you.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Take care,
