- 0:09Speaker 1: We're gonna start.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Oh no, we started, really you started, Sims, and I started.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Alright, so you guys, so you guys, you guys keep
- 0:20Speaker 3: recording filibuster for fifteen seconds because I'm just going to
- 0:23Speaker 3: grab a bottle of water.
- 0:24Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, all right, good.
- 0:26Speaker 5: This guy he is, he's prepared here.
- 0:29Speaker 4: Uh yeah, yeah, not I mean a fucking bottle of water.
- 0:33Speaker 5: We're gonna get up to get that.
- 0:34Speaker 4: He can't make it through the next twenty minutes without
- 0:36Speaker 4: the bottle of water.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Do you ever hear him hacking?
- 0:40Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, he needs the bottle of water.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Just I mean, little professionalism, little preparedness.
- 0:46Speaker 5: Seriously.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Chris Simms is with us the Unbuttoned podcast Football Night
- 0:51Speaker 3: in America be Efty with Mike Florio every day on Peacock.
- 0:55Speaker 3: We love him, we miss him. Football seasons over. I'm
- 0:57Speaker 3: sad but he's ranking. But he's ranking again.
- 1:00Speaker 1: He is. I love a good ranking.
- 1:04Speaker 3: So quickly, quickly, before we get to the football stuff, Sims,
- 1:09Speaker 3: Taylor is not here. I am wondering as a fellow
- 1:12Speaker 3: Yankee fan. Taylor is a big Yankee fan. Were you
- 1:15Speaker 3: able to find yourself uh, were you able to find
- 1:18Speaker 3: the ability to root for Roman Anthony as a Yankee
- 1:22Speaker 3: fan because he's a Red Sox. Taylor could not he
- 1:24Speaker 3: was rooting for Team Venezuela. Up he was rooting for
- 1:27Speaker 3: Team Italy simply because he refuses to root for Roman
- 1:31Speaker 3: Anthony even when he's playing for his country.
- 1:33Speaker 4: No, I don't have any problem with that. I can
- 1:35Speaker 4: make that crossover. I mean, you know, Taylor's he's you know,
- 1:39Speaker 4: he's simple minded. He's still at the early phases of evolution.
- 1:44Speaker 4: He just got out of the cave not long ago,
- 1:46Speaker 4: so he's only capable of one thought.
- 1:48Speaker 5: So I understand that Red Sox.
- 1:54Speaker 4: We start fire, Yankee start fire, then Red Socks copy.
- 1:58Speaker 5: You make fire that Taylor.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Yeah, so you've never been more right about anything you've said,
- 2:08Speaker 3: and I'm so proud of them.
- 2:12Speaker 4: No, but I can do that. I'm also one of
- 2:13Speaker 4: the I guess, those weird New Yorkers. And I don't
- 2:15Speaker 4: know if this always happens this way, but I don't.
- 2:19Speaker 4: I don't like hate the Mets because I'm a Yankees fan, right,
- 2:23Speaker 4: and you know there's there's like fans here in the
- 2:25Speaker 4: area that are like, oh, you can't be like that,
- 2:28Speaker 4: And I was like, no, No, I mean I would
- 2:30Speaker 4: hate the Red Sox more than the Mets. And I think,
- 2:32Speaker 4: you know the other part of that is just because
- 2:35Speaker 4: when you leave the area, you stick up for New
- 2:38Speaker 4: York in general, right you do? So I think that's
- 2:41Speaker 4: what happened to me too. I went to other places
- 2:43Speaker 4: played in the NFL, college my New York pride showed through.
- 2:48Speaker 4: If the Mets were good, I'd be like, look, the second,
- 2:50Speaker 4: our second best team in our city because your teams geez.
- 2:54Speaker 4: So I always use that as a point of pride.
- 2:57Speaker 4: But no, for the the World Baseball Classic, I could
- 2:59Speaker 4: root for a Red Socks.
- 3:00Speaker 5: That's an American I can do.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Funny, you say that as a Yankee fan, if you
- 3:05Speaker 2: asked me to list the teams I hate, I'd probably
- 3:08Speaker 2: get the double digits Before I said the Mets.
- 3:10Speaker 4: I would agree with you as well. I have no
- 3:12Speaker 4: beef with them. I mean no, again, I think it's
- 3:15Speaker 4: more the other way around. I think that Mets fans
- 3:18Speaker 4: hate Yankee fans a lot more. And I can understand
- 3:20Speaker 4: that they always that's all they have to hear about
- 3:22Speaker 4: all the time, twenty seven championships for the King of Baseball,
- 3:26Speaker 4: all that.
- 3:26Speaker 5: So I get that.
- 3:28Speaker 4: But yeah, You're right, I'm in double digits, probably before
- 3:30Speaker 4: I get to the Mets.
- 3:31Speaker 1: As a Met fan. I will tell you it's just
- 3:33Speaker 1: born out of jealousy. It's not hatred. It's just right.
- 3:38Speaker 5: You know.
- 3:39Speaker 4: It's the same thing with the Jets and the Giants too,
- 3:41Speaker 4: maybe not to the same extent, but like, the Giants
- 3:44Speaker 4: don't really care about the Jets, but the Jets fans.
- 3:46Speaker 4: I sit here and have them in the building here
- 3:49Speaker 4: on Sundays and they actively root against the Giants on
- 3:51Speaker 4: some and I'm like, why, we got nothing to do
- 3:54Speaker 4: with you, but they root against it. So it is
- 3:56Speaker 4: a funny psychology behind it.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Because we're a bunch of miserable fucking That's why we
- 4:01Speaker 1: do that.
- 4:01Speaker 3: I mean, we really don't care. They're in a different conference.
- 4:03Speaker 3: We shouldn't care, but we have a complex because our
- 4:05Speaker 3: team is never good.
- 4:06Speaker 1: You know, Yeah, I know, were you into the World
- 4:09Speaker 1: Baseball Classical.
- 4:12Speaker 4: It's not baseball season. I just I'm a little that way.
- 4:15Speaker 4: First off, I'm still sad football is over. I'm working
- 4:18Speaker 4: myself into basketball mode here, right. You know that's hard
- 4:23Speaker 4: enough for me, and as you know, I'm knee deep
- 4:26Speaker 4: in the draft and trying to do that, So yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 4: I'm not. And here's my thing with the World Baseball Classic.
- 4:32Speaker 4: First off, if if it's such a big deal, then
- 4:34Speaker 4: they need to start spring training a few months earlier
- 4:36Speaker 4: to get them ready for the world But because you're
- 4:38Speaker 4: not seeing the players at their best right now, they've
- 4:40Speaker 4: been practicing for three weeks and now we're playing, well,
- 4:43Speaker 4: maybe the biggest game in the history of the plant.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Like what No, And then you can't sell me like
- 4:48Speaker 4: it's such a I hear all these people like, oh,
- 4:50Speaker 4: it's a big deal. It might be bigger than the
- 4:52Speaker 4: World Series. I heard Aaron Judge. I think he made
- 4:55Speaker 4: a comment like that. I wanted to be like, whoa, whoa,
- 4:57Speaker 4: whoa whoa challenge flag negative ghost writer. When I turn
- 5:01Speaker 4: on the World Series, the stadium is full, especially in
- 5:05Speaker 4: the World Series. When I turn on the World Baseball
- 5:08Speaker 4: Classic semi finals or finals, uh, stadium not full. I
- 5:12Speaker 4: was sitting there watching the start of the game, like, so,
- 5:14Speaker 4: don't give me that bull crap that it's more important.
- 5:17Speaker 5: I don't agree with that.
- 5:18Speaker 3: I love what Derek Jeter said, and he should be
- 5:20Speaker 3: the final word on all of this. He said those
- 5:22Speaker 3: people saying that that the World Baseball Classic means more
- 5:25Speaker 3: to them than making it and winning a World Series.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Have never played in a World Series?
- 5:32Speaker 5: Yeah, I would second that. I would checkon that, but.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Judge has I mean, I know That's where it.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Was weird to the judge saying that, you know, I
- 5:39Speaker 4: understand you get caught up in your country's pride, and
- 5:42Speaker 4: there is that aspect that is it's very cool.
- 5:45Speaker 5: And I wish, you know, I never got to experience that.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Football players don't get to experience it until you know
- 5:50Speaker 4: this the next Olympics with the maybe the flag football.
- 5:52Speaker 4: But uh yeah, I definitely found that odd with people
- 5:56Speaker 4: saying that.
- 5:56Speaker 3: What will the next four days look like for Chris
- 5:58Speaker 3: Sims and the Chris Sims? How are you gonna be
- 6:00Speaker 3: glued to the NCAA tournament like the.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Rest of us. I'm not glued.
- 6:04Speaker 4: I'm not glued because I have to be glued to
- 6:06Speaker 4: the draft. I'm stressed. Like one of the reasons I've
- 6:08Speaker 4: been ignoring you on text and stuff is because I'm like,
- 6:12Speaker 4: I just I can't come on. I'm looking at a
- 6:15Speaker 4: list of three hundred guys, you know, and I don't
- 6:17Speaker 4: even go into the sixth and seventh round and worry
- 6:20Speaker 4: about those guys.
- 6:21Speaker 5: So I'm looking at that going holy okay.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Every day I'm like, oh, I only get to watch
- 6:26Speaker 4: three guys today, Like, holy crap, I'm gonna be behind.
- 6:29Speaker 4: So I'm that's really where I'm at in my life.
- 6:31Speaker 4: But I will have it on and you know, when
- 6:34Speaker 4: I have free moments and the day is over and
- 6:36Speaker 4: I'm content with my work, then I sit down and
- 6:38Speaker 4: really enjoy it.
- 6:39Speaker 5: But it'll be kind of background noise during the day.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Sims as you get ready for the draft. You're preparing
- 6:44Speaker 1: for the draft. You shouldn't be nervous about it. It's okay,
- 6:46Speaker 1: you still have time here.
- 6:48Speaker 3: But I am wondering who is the guy that kind
- 6:50Speaker 3: of has surprised you as you're getting ready for the draft,
- 6:53Speaker 3: the guy that you thought, eh, I don't know about
- 6:55Speaker 3: this guy.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Then you watch the tape You're like, holy shit, this
- 6:57Speaker 1: guy's good.
- 6:58Speaker 5: Yeah, oh yeah. There's been been a few.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Actually they're really as first off, the receivers, it's a
- 7:04Speaker 4: deep group. I don't want to give any I don't
- 7:06Speaker 4: want to give you any inklings there because I haven't
- 7:08Speaker 4: really broke out my rankings there as yet. Running backs,
- 7:13Speaker 4: you could say the same thing.
- 7:14Speaker 5: I mean, there's some really good ones. You know.
- 7:17Speaker 4: Here's two that I'll just throw to you in the
- 7:18Speaker 4: running back conversation because we know Jeremiah Love is a
- 7:21Speaker 4: freak show. I hope the Giants take him at number five.
- 7:24Speaker 4: He could I made the comment he could be Marshall Fauk.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Is that good. He's that kind of player. You know,
- 7:29Speaker 4: that's the ultimate ceiling. You know, right now, if you
- 7:32Speaker 4: took a player, he's Jamiir Gibbs. But he's got more
- 7:34Speaker 4: power and more physicality running between the tackles. So he's special.
- 7:39Speaker 4: So that's not a surprise. Jadarian Price is special. He's
- 7:42Speaker 4: a first round running back. So that's another one. But
- 7:46Speaker 4: then you get into the Penn State guys. The Penn
- 7:49Speaker 4: State guys are really interesting. Kron Allen and Nicholas Singleton.
- 7:53Speaker 4: You know, first off, you're probably going to hook I
- 7:55Speaker 4: watched those games. It it wouldn't seem great. Well, remember,
- 7:58Speaker 4: Penn State can't throw. They have the worst passing offense
- 8:01Speaker 4: in football.
- 8:01Speaker 5: They have no receivers.
- 8:02Speaker 4: You're talking about coming out in the draft, So everybody
- 8:04Speaker 4: just played the run when they played Penn State. Now
- 8:07Speaker 4: those two guys right there, k Tron Allen is a
- 8:10Speaker 4: between the tackles bruiser, awesome football player. Nicholas Singleton has
- 8:15Speaker 4: three rockets up his ass. He could be a Jamal
- 8:18Speaker 4: Charles right if he gets at the right plays, he could.
- 8:21Speaker 4: You know, he's not great at side to side. He's
- 8:23Speaker 4: a little straight liner. But those were some guys that
- 8:25Speaker 4: really popped to me. I think on the quarterback aspect too.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Just to answer that real quick, it would be Baron
- 8:31Speaker 4: Morton from Texas Tech. He was my third ranked quarterback.
- 8:34Speaker 4: That was probably, I guess, the one that shocked people
- 8:38Speaker 4: and shocked me too. I knew he was down the
- 8:40Speaker 4: line for a lot of people, but when I turned
- 8:42Speaker 4: that on, I just went, man, this is one of
- 8:44Speaker 4: the few guys I look at in the whole class
- 8:46Speaker 4: that I go could be an NFL starting quarterback. He's
- 8:49Speaker 4: got good size, he's quick in the pocket, he makes
- 8:52Speaker 4: a lot of big time NFL throws. He's got a
- 8:55Speaker 4: great motion. He can throw high level throws and be
- 8:59Speaker 4: very accurate with it. Still, their offense wasn't good. Their
- 9:03Speaker 4: receivers aren't that great, and that's where you gotta get
- 9:06Speaker 4: through it.
- 9:07Speaker 5: You gotta.
- 9:08Speaker 4: You can't just you're not drafting two in Alabama with
- 9:11Speaker 4: the all star team around him. That's how we mess
- 9:13Speaker 4: up drafts. So that's where he was surprising to me.
- 9:16Speaker 4: I'm difference to gods in this where I was.
- 9:20Speaker 5: Some of his best players are incompletions R.
- 9:23Speaker 4: But you know you'll go to a grading site and go, oh,
- 9:25Speaker 4: he got a double negative there, he got a minus
- 9:27Speaker 4: two there, and I want to.
- 9:28Speaker 5: Go, wait this play.
- 9:29Speaker 4: He got the ball he made somebody miss at right
- 9:33Speaker 4: away because he's under pressure all the time, there's nobody open.
- 9:36Speaker 4: He finds a little soft spot to just set his
- 9:39Speaker 4: feet real quick. He throws a ball twenty yards on
- 9:42Speaker 4: the out route, puts it high and wide in the
- 9:44Speaker 4: perfect spot, incomplete because he wanted to be safe with it.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Negative grade.
- 9:48Speaker 4: I sit there and go, that's a phenomenal quarterback play
- 9:50Speaker 4: right there, that's phenomenal. There was nothing there and he
- 9:53Speaker 4: almost made it happen. And that's where I think the
- 9:56Speaker 4: disconnect happens instead of wait, there's a guy wide open
- 10:00Speaker 4: at four feet in front of him, and he threw
- 10:01Speaker 4: it and the guy ran for eighty and people call
- 10:03Speaker 4: positive grade, first rounder. Oh my gosh, unbelievable. Whoa he
- 10:08Speaker 4: can throw at four feet and the guy can run
- 10:09Speaker 4: eighty Look at that. He's a winner. And that's where
- 10:13Speaker 4: everybody gets messed up in this whole process.
- 10:15Speaker 3: What is the maximum amount of rockets one could have
- 10:18Speaker 3: up his ass?
- 10:19Speaker 1: Like question?
- 10:20Speaker 5: Yes, no, three has been the max?
- 10:22Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, so that is a max compliment from Chris
- 10:26Speaker 3: Sims when he had three rockets up your ass.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Definitely, it's it's like Tyreek Kill has been three rockets?
- 10:32Speaker 5: Right, Yes, it's that kind of guy.
- 10:34Speaker 4: And Singleton is one of those guys like when you
- 10:36Speaker 4: turn on the film, you go, whoa wait, hold on,
- 10:38Speaker 4: he's he moves faster than everybody else on the film.
- 10:41Speaker 5: What if that help?
- 10:42Speaker 4: So, yeah, he's got some nuance to learn, but he's
- 10:45Speaker 4: got big, big playability and it would not shock me
- 10:48Speaker 4: if he really became a star in the NFL.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Stick outs here.
- 10:51Speaker 5: Let's be real.

- 12:03Speaker 2: to talk to you about your your quarterback rankings and
- 12:05Speaker 2: your running back rankings that you put out, But first
- 12:07Speaker 2: I want to go a little macro and I want
- 12:09Speaker 2: to ask you, Yeah, based on everything we've seen, is
- 12:13Speaker 2: the gap between Tier one bigger for running backs from
- 12:17Speaker 2: Jeremiah Love to Tier two or Fernando Mendoza to I
- 12:21Speaker 2: think you have Ty Simpson as tier two.
- 12:23Speaker 4: Yeah, Oh that's a good. I'm gonna say it's bigger
- 12:26Speaker 4: at the quarterback position.
- 12:27Speaker 5: The game.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I was worried you were going to say that.
- 12:29Speaker 5: Yeah, Jar is really good.
- 12:33Speaker 4: I mean Jadaria at a point when we were talking
- 12:35Speaker 4: in the middle of the year, and I know we
- 12:38Speaker 4: don't talk about college football, but was at a point
- 12:40Speaker 4: where like his last thirteen touches, nine of them were touchdowns,
- 12:44Speaker 4: and it was like they weren't from the one yard line.
- 12:46Speaker 4: It was like fifty yard touchdown, forty yard touchdown, eighty
- 12:50Speaker 4: yard kick return. I mean, I loved them. This is
- 12:53Speaker 4: the thing I've tried to say to people. I loved
- 12:55Speaker 4: Omion Hampton coming out of North Carolina. I put him
- 12:58Speaker 4: in the same tier as Ashton Genty. I think Jadarian
- 13:01Speaker 4: Price is better than Omaroon Hampton coming out. And I'm
- 13:03Speaker 4: still a fan of Omaron Hampton, so you know, yeah,
- 13:06Speaker 4: that that love is really special. But I would say
- 13:09Speaker 4: that gap is closer. And it is a good question
- 13:12Speaker 4: by you, mike Ye, because I will tell you that
- 13:14Speaker 4: when I started the process, I went, I think the
- 13:17Speaker 4: gap between Mendoza and ty Simpson is going to be
- 13:19Speaker 4: closer than people realize. But as I watched through the
- 13:22Speaker 4: film and started to dig through it, No, Mendoza's the
- 13:26Speaker 4: freaking man. Mendoza doesn't miss. Mendoza is a really good athlete.
- 13:31Speaker 4: Mendoza's tough, as hell. Mendoza is just one good decision
- 13:34Speaker 4: after another. Mendoza makes the hard stuff look so easy
- 13:38Speaker 4: that we actually, I think, discredit for him.
- 13:40Speaker 5: That's what I kind of took away from it, were
- 13:43Speaker 5: we kind of poop pooed, like.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Oh, there he is, get hit in the face throwing
- 13:47Speaker 4: a back shoulder twenty five yards down the field on
- 13:50Speaker 4: the money. You know, he's a dork. He looked in
- 13:53Speaker 4: the camera and talks like this like no, no, no, he's
- 13:55Speaker 4: the man.
- 13:56Speaker 5: He's the man.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Yes, so, and ty Simpson's really good, but there's some
- 14:00Speaker 4: little deficienciess in mechanics throwing the football. At times, he's
- 14:04Speaker 4: a phenomenal athlete. I mean, he makes them unbelievable moving around, oh,
- 14:09Speaker 4: throwing the ball in weird positions and still getting power there.
- 14:12Speaker 4: Incredible that way, but he also at the end of
- 14:15Speaker 4: the year was a little off target because of some
- 14:18Speaker 4: of those mechanics. And what I do worry about with
- 14:20Speaker 4: ty Simpson is he's six to one. He's he's two
- 14:23Speaker 4: hundred and twelve at the combine. He was probably one
- 14:26Speaker 4: ninety something during the NFL the college season, and I
- 14:30Speaker 4: do worry about that size and how that translates, and
- 14:33Speaker 4: I always worry about size, as you guys know.
- 14:35Speaker 5: So yeah, I liked him a lot. He's certainly in
- 14:38Speaker 5: the first round conversation.
- 14:39Speaker 4: But I think the gap between him and Mendoz is
- 14:41Speaker 4: bigger than Love and Jadari and Mikeye.
- 14:43Speaker 1: It seemed like Mendoza surprised you. Is that fair? You
- 14:46Speaker 1: weren't expecting that?
- 14:47Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I was not expecting that kind of stuff there.
- 14:49Speaker 5: I was not. You know, I think that you.
- 14:53Speaker 4: You realize like I had things in my note, hey
- 14:55Speaker 4: good arm, you know, a really good arm, not a
- 14:58Speaker 4: wow arm. And then like three sentence I'm like sentences later,
- 15:02Speaker 4: I'm like, well, check that it is a wow arm.
- 15:04Speaker 4: I didn't realize when he steps on the gas like
- 15:07Speaker 4: that he can do that, and you know, so that's.
- 15:09Speaker 5: The amazing thing.
- 15:10Speaker 4: And then there's there's a lot of plays too where
- 15:13Speaker 4: you know, again, I think we just kind of swept
- 15:15Speaker 4: it on the rug where pressure he moves, he runs
- 15:18Speaker 4: a little bit, and then he sets back up with
- 15:19Speaker 4: really quick feet, makes a big throw down the field
- 15:21Speaker 4: and you just go, it's phenomenal. He's the most machine
- 15:26Speaker 4: I've seen as far as quarterback. And I wrote this
- 15:29Speaker 4: it's Joe Burrow ish and his processing and his ability
- 15:32Speaker 4: to stay growing. Yeah, it's Joe Burrow. You'd go, oh,
- 15:35Speaker 4: he read one, it wasn't there. Oh he read two,
- 15:37Speaker 4: and you're like, what he did? He even look at
- 15:39Speaker 4: three and he's already kind of throwing and processed it
- 15:42Speaker 4: and it's open. And that's to me where he's got
- 15:46Speaker 4: a little bit of that Burrow Peyton Manning aspect about him.
- 15:49Speaker 5: And then if you meet him in person, you're like,
- 15:51Speaker 5: oh gosh, you are like Peyton Manning.
- 15:53Speaker 4: You're prepared for everything, you know everything about everybody, and
- 15:55Speaker 4: you're that.
- 15:56Speaker 5: Guy, right, And I give him credit for that.
- 15:58Speaker 4: Yes, I pick up the wrong way. I know what
- 16:00Speaker 4: you're getting mad about. Because he's prepared and he wants
- 16:02Speaker 4: to be impressive.
- 16:04Speaker 5: That's a good thing.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Yes, Speaking of Burrow, are you a little worried about
- 16:09Speaker 2: Mendoza going into a similar situation as Burrow where he's
- 16:12Speaker 2: gonna go and guess what, good luck, there's no offensive
- 16:16Speaker 2: line here to help you.
- 16:17Speaker 5: No.
- 16:18Speaker 4: I I guess yes, But but I think they realize
- 16:21Speaker 4: that too, And and of course you know that's the
- 16:23Speaker 4: you know, the Raiders, And I'm sure that was the
- 16:25Speaker 4: disappointment of the Max Crosby trade just because hey, yeah,
- 16:29Speaker 4: we're gonna have two first rounders. We're gonna be able
- 16:31Speaker 4: to build around him and do stuff like that. But
- 16:34Speaker 4: you know, the one thing I'll say, you get the
- 16:36Speaker 4: center and Linderbaum. You got an offensive head coach who
- 16:41Speaker 4: understands how to run the ball and understands how to
- 16:45Speaker 4: protect and not to put the quarterback in vulnerable positions.
- 16:47Speaker 4: And that's why you love Mendoza the Raiders, because Mendoza
- 16:51Speaker 4: ran a ton of play action at Indiana and he's
- 16:53Speaker 4: gonna do a ton of that with Kun Kubiak, who
- 16:55Speaker 4: runs that Shanahan scheme, and that it should fit Mike Ye.
- 16:58Speaker 4: I think they'll be all right, and I think they'll makes,
- 17:00Speaker 4: you know, a concerted effort to improve that old line
- 17:03Speaker 4: in the draft and even maybe further on here in
- 17:06Speaker 4: free agency.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Chris, what's going on in Minnesota is interesting to me,
- 17:09Speaker 3: and we'll get to it in just a second.
- 17:11Speaker 1: But I'm wondering here to it's with Atlanta.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Kyler to Minnesota, who has the better chance of I guess,
- 17:17Speaker 3: resuscitating their career here moving forward?
- 17:20Speaker 1: I love to it to Atlanta. By the way, I
- 17:21Speaker 1: thought it.
- 17:21Speaker 5: Was it's a good fit. It is a good fit. Hey,
- 17:24Speaker 5: he's in a dome.
- 17:26Speaker 4: Kevin Stefanski, you know, he just had a Dylan Gabriel,
- 17:30Speaker 4: who's you know, not too dissimilar lefty shorter quarterback, right,
- 17:35Speaker 4: But yeah, I like it there, and I certainly see
- 17:38Speaker 4: could see him winning that job. Michael Pennix has not
- 17:40Speaker 4: done enough, and I don't think he's done enough behind
- 17:43Speaker 4: the scenes to make the organization feel warm and comfy
- 17:45Speaker 4: about where he's at. But I think either of situation,
- 17:48Speaker 4: the young quarterback needed a veteran there to kind of
- 17:51Speaker 4: push him along and challenge him. So but I'm more
- 17:54Speaker 4: excited about Kyler Murray because I'm just more First off,
- 17:57Speaker 4: Kyler Murray, we know, I think has a higher ceiling
- 18:01Speaker 4: than to I mean, there's no limitations to the throws
- 18:04Speaker 4: Kyler Murray can make, and he can still run at
- 18:06Speaker 4: a special level too. But then you couple that with whoa,
- 18:09Speaker 4: it's Kevin O'Connell. Whoa, it's Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison
- 18:13Speaker 4: and TJ. Hockinson and whoa. You know, one of the
- 18:17Speaker 4: things we worry about with with Kyler is, you know,
- 18:20Speaker 4: he's got to be protected well Minnesota can really protect
- 18:22Speaker 4: the passer. That's one of the things they're good at.
- 18:24Speaker 4: They got two really good tackles on both sides of
- 18:27Speaker 4: the ball there. So I think that's where I look
- 18:29Speaker 4: at that one to be the most intriguing. And I
- 18:31Speaker 4: think it's like, you know, rare that you have a
- 18:34Speaker 4: legit quarterback battle, and I think that's one where we
- 18:37Speaker 4: have a rare like it's going to go in even
- 18:39Speaker 4: and we're going to see who wins it.
- 18:41Speaker 3: The Vikings, according to Diana Rassini, today, have decided to
- 18:45Speaker 3: bring back Carson. On what's going on with JJ McCarthy man.
- 18:48Speaker 4: Well, they're just protecting themselves. I think it's pretty you know,
- 18:51Speaker 4: it's so JJ McCarthy is played one year and he's
- 18:57Speaker 4: got injured what three different times, and then the other
- 19:00Speaker 4: year he couldn't even get to the year he got
- 19:01Speaker 4: hurt in the preseason, so they got to.
- 19:04Speaker 5: Worry about that.
- 19:05Speaker 4: And then you got Kyler Murray, who's small, he's one,
- 19:07Speaker 4: you know, getting smushed into the ground.
- 19:09Speaker 5: You're like, oh, he's done for a few weeks. He
- 19:11Speaker 5: got smushed like he's done. It's it's so what do
- 19:14Speaker 5: we do?
- 19:14Speaker 4: So I think, you know, Carson Wentz gives them a
- 19:16Speaker 4: little protection for two guys that have had a little
- 19:19Speaker 4: injury history.
- 19:20Speaker 5: And I think it's more about that.
- 19:22Speaker 4: It's more about that they have a good football team
- 19:24Speaker 4: and they looked at it and probably went, man, we
- 19:27Speaker 4: messed up some years because we didn't have adequate backups
- 19:29Speaker 4: here to save us.
- 19:31Speaker 2: But you don't see that Carson Wentz chose to go back.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Maybe they they gave him some indication that you are
- 19:38Speaker 2: the number two.
- 19:39Speaker 5: Well, he's sees blood in the water.
- 19:41Speaker 4: He just goes, wait, I don't have a lot of
- 19:42Speaker 4: opportunities here, and this is one where, you know, I
- 19:45Speaker 4: think next to these guys every day, I can show
- 19:48Speaker 4: that I'm you know, I'm right up there with them
- 19:49Speaker 4: a little bit and yeah, maybe be a number two
- 19:52Speaker 4: or he's just sitting here going.
- 19:54Speaker 5: Wait, I can be with O'Connell.
- 19:56Speaker 4: If I do get a chance to go in, I
- 19:58Speaker 4: know it's a place I can look good. Hey, these
- 20:01Speaker 4: guys get hurt, so I could end up in the
- 20:03Speaker 4: football game, and you just want to put yourself in
- 20:05Speaker 4: a spot where you know you can succeed if you
- 20:07Speaker 4: do get in. And I think that's where it's good
- 20:09Speaker 4: for Carson Wentz.
- 20:09Speaker 3: The frustrating thing with Kyler Murray is he could sit
- 20:12Speaker 3: on the couch, play video games for eighteen months, get
- 20:14Speaker 3: off the couch and walk on any athletic.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Field that he's the best athlete on the field. And
- 20:19Speaker 1: I think that's what right.
- 20:20Speaker 3: But you think O'Connell might have a chance or probably
- 20:23Speaker 3: the best chance of bringing something special out of Kyler Murray.
- 20:26Speaker 5: I hope so.
- 20:27Speaker 4: And you know to that, that's where Kyler Murray I
- 20:30Speaker 4: think has to up his game. Yeah, he's got to
- 20:32Speaker 4: up his game, and hopefully he can learn that being
- 20:34Speaker 4: around with Carson Wentz, even a JJ McCarthy and seeing
- 20:38Speaker 4: how they approach it. But yees, O'Connell's gonna have a standard.
- 20:41Speaker 4: And it's always a little bit of a shock. People think, oh,
- 20:44Speaker 4: I was with a good offensive coordinator and I did this,
- 20:46Speaker 4: and I did that. I know football, And then you
- 20:48Speaker 4: get it with an O'Connell, you know, a Shanahana McVeigh
- 20:51Speaker 4: and Andy Reid, a Josh McDaniels, like, holy shit, I
- 20:54Speaker 4: don't know anything. I mean, they're teaching me stuff that
- 20:56Speaker 4: I never really realized the nuance of that they're holding
- 21:00Speaker 4: me to a standard that I've been with some other
- 21:02Speaker 4: good offensive coaches, the standards not been like this, right,
- 21:06Speaker 4: So there's gonna be a shock, you know, a shock there,
- 21:09Speaker 4: like what Caleb Williams went through last year. What every
- 21:12Speaker 4: play I gotta be perfect and remember all these rules.
- 21:14Speaker 4: I used to just drop back and go, I'm gonna
- 21:16Speaker 4: make it happen. Holy crap. So that that's where I think,
- 21:20Speaker 4: you know, the Kevin O'Connell experience kind of hits you
- 21:22Speaker 4: right in the face.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Holy shit. I have a coach. He's holding me account to.
- 21:26Speaker 4: Check and I can't just run out of the pocket
- 21:28Speaker 4: and play backyard football when I want. He's going out, idiot.
- 21:31Speaker 4: There's people open, it's there in the pocket. There's an
- 21:34Speaker 4: adjustment to that. And and the quarterback coaches and the
- 21:36Speaker 4: quarterback whisperers really.
- 21:38Speaker 5: Have that stuke. Got's here.

- 23:47Speaker 3: So, how do the coaches like in terms of this
- 23:49Speaker 3: is interesting to me because Caleb Williams you mentioned, of
- 23:52Speaker 3: course with Ben Johnson O'Connell, now with Kyler Murray. How
- 23:55Speaker 3: do they gain those guys trust? Is it simply by
- 23:58Speaker 3: telling them to do things and then they go out
- 23:59Speaker 3: on the field and they do said things and those
- 24:01Speaker 3: things work and that's it trust esablished?
- 24:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 24:04Speaker 1: One.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Well, and they first they first start down that road
- 24:07Speaker 4: with showing them visual evidence of the plays working before, right, right,
- 24:10Speaker 4: So you got to be a salesman. They go in
- 24:12Speaker 4: and they sell the play to the quarterback and the
- 24:15Speaker 4: offense first to go.
- 24:16Speaker 5: Hey, look look look at this play.
- 24:17Speaker 4: Look at and if you just do this and read
- 24:19Speaker 4: this guy right here, hey look this is this is
- 24:21Speaker 4: Joe Montana and Jerry Rice in nineteen eighty nine.
- 24:23Speaker 5: Look at Joe bo and you know, the players per
- 24:25Speaker 5: cup and go that's awesome.
- 24:26Speaker 4: And then you know, he shows another play ten years
- 24:28Speaker 4: later and goes, ok here Sterling sharp gone touchdown, same play,
- 24:31Speaker 4: and then it's okay.
- 24:33Speaker 5: So it gets you excited to do it, and then
- 24:35Speaker 5: they go out in the field a few.
- 24:36Speaker 4: Times and you're like, damn every time he calls that
- 24:38Speaker 4: play and I just read that key that he talks about. Yeah, shit,
- 24:41Speaker 4: it's it's a good play, and everybody thinks I'm awesome
- 24:43Speaker 4: because yes, right, And.
- 24:45Speaker 5: That's where you get onto me.
- 24:46Speaker 4: You know, you hear me say sometimes like it's a
- 24:48Speaker 4: silver platter completion by Shanahan and Rigbay, like you know,
- 24:53Speaker 4: I'm gonna get them wide open if you can just
- 24:54Speaker 4: throw it over here.
- 24:56Speaker 5: It's a big play. And yeah, that's how it happens.
- 24:58Speaker 4: And that's why you always hear those guys leave those
- 25:00Speaker 4: places and go, oh my gosh, their.
- 25:01Speaker 5: A genius, third genius, third genus.
- 25:03Speaker 1: I love that shit. Yeah, yeah, that's so gat right.
- 25:05Speaker 3: They tell you months in advance, Hey, don't worry, it's
- 25:07Speaker 3: gonna be open. You get out on the field and
- 25:08Speaker 3: holy shit, it's.
- 25:09Speaker 4: Oh right, he's just like you know, he told me,
- 25:12Speaker 4: and he told me to like, watch this guy and
- 25:15Speaker 4: if he leans that way, it means it's this coverage,
- 25:17Speaker 4: and if he leans that way, it's that card. And
- 25:18Speaker 4: it's like he's right every time. I'm that experience with
- 25:21Speaker 4: Shanahan and Tampa Bay. Really yeah, Tampa Bay. When he
- 25:24Speaker 4: was quality control, we got into a game and he
- 25:28Speaker 4: was starting to get more and more confident with giving
- 25:31Speaker 4: me little clues on the sideline and things like that
- 25:33Speaker 4: and speaking his mind, and he kind of showed me
- 25:36Speaker 4: something about the nickelback one time and he goes, listen,
- 25:38Speaker 4: if he plays like this again, I've been watching them
- 25:40Speaker 4: all game, it's quarters.
- 25:42Speaker 5: If he plays like this, it's Tampa two.
- 25:44Speaker 4: And I remember I got out there and I was like, man,
- 25:46Speaker 4: I'm not sure what coverage it is, and I looked
- 25:48Speaker 4: over the nickel and I went, damn. Kyle said, if
- 25:50Speaker 4: he plays like this, it's quarters, And man, shit, if
- 25:53Speaker 4: he wasn't right, like every freaking time, and I and
- 25:56Speaker 4: you know, that's the kind of stuff he can do.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Because he's putting the work in the time and he's
- 26:00Speaker 3: the film in a way that you were not telling
- 26:02Speaker 3: you how to do something exactly right, and so it
- 26:05Speaker 3: feels like your coach is right exactly.
- 26:08Speaker 4: He understands the rules to a t to be able
- 26:10Speaker 4: to teach it exactly. I love that the Jets have
- 26:12Speaker 4: never had that go ahead was.
- 26:14Speaker 2: He or any other coach ever wrong where you're like, oh,
- 26:17Speaker 2: I'm gonna do this, and then all of a sudden
- 26:19Speaker 2: they did it and you go and you look at
- 26:20Speaker 2: him like you you fucking told me, Yeah.
- 26:26Speaker 4: It was I could you know Gruden had that ability
- 26:28Speaker 4: to be good like that too.
- 26:30Speaker 5: But here here's a good one. We got into my
- 26:33Speaker 5: second year.
- 26:34Speaker 4: I was the starter and then I got hurt my shoulder,
- 26:37Speaker 4: and then Brian Greasie came in and took over, and
- 26:40Speaker 4: then late in the year they put me back in.
- 26:43Speaker 5: It was healthy. We're playing Arizona Cardinals EMMITTT.
- 26:45Speaker 4: Smith's last game as an NFL football player, Okay, and
- 26:50Speaker 4: they had a three four defense. They were kind of
- 26:52Speaker 4: a pain in the butt on defense, and they blitzed
- 26:54Speaker 4: a lot and brought different coverages. So all week Gruden
- 26:57Speaker 4: gave us these clues. He's like, listen, when this guy
- 27:00Speaker 4: steps on the line of scrimmage, it's this blitz. Okay,
- 27:04Speaker 4: and this coverage and they only step one guy on
- 27:07Speaker 4: the line of scrimmage and do it, and then you
- 27:09Speaker 4: know it's coming from over here, and and like you know,
- 27:11Speaker 4: you watch years of film and you go, I mean
- 27:13Speaker 4: the whole season of film, and you go, yeah, it's
- 27:14Speaker 4: one hundred percent proof, right, He's right every time they
- 27:17Speaker 4: do this this this blitz blah blah blah. So we
- 27:19Speaker 4: had all these checks in the game kind of in
- 27:21Speaker 4: the game plan, coupled with other plays we get to,
- 27:24Speaker 4: like the second or third play of the game, we
- 27:26Speaker 4: got a pass play, but we got you know, check, check, check.
- 27:29Speaker 5: If that guy walks.
- 27:30Speaker 4: To the line of scrimmage, well you know blue forty
- 27:32Speaker 4: five blue for about the guy walks to the line
- 27:34Speaker 4: of scrimmage and I'm like, oh, Gruden's right here, we go,
- 27:36Speaker 4: we got him. Well, as he's doing that, I look across.
- 27:39Speaker 4: I go, well, shit, the other guy's walking on the
- 27:41Speaker 4: line of scrimmage.
- 27:43Speaker 5: About this one. What do we do if you told
- 27:46Speaker 5: me to check of that guy?
- 27:47Speaker 4: And you know, I had to orchestrate the protection according
- 27:50Speaker 4: to where the guy in the line of scrimmage was.
- 27:52Speaker 4: And I'm going there on both sides what do you
- 27:53Speaker 4: want me to And I remember I was like Blueitty five,
- 27:55Speaker 4: and I remember I kind of looking over.
- 27:57Speaker 5: I'm like, we're screwed. I don't know what you want
- 27:59Speaker 5: me to do here.
- 27:59Speaker 4: Yes, So it took us like a quarter to kind
- 28:02Speaker 4: of like readjust the game plan because we realized they
- 28:04Speaker 4: self scattered themselves and change their damn rules.
- 28:07Speaker 5: This is over. And it was annoying.
- 28:10Speaker 3: Holy shit, we have no idea what we're watching.
- 28:16Speaker 5: Dropping back, I got like, I don't know. We're protected.
- 28:20Speaker 5: I don't know what's going on here.
- 28:22Speaker 1: That's so funny.
- 28:23Speaker 3: Quickly before we get you out of here, I know
- 28:25Speaker 3: you gotta run. I love the deal for both teams.
- 28:28Speaker 3: It's the rare trade where I thought both teams did well.
- 28:30Speaker 3: Jalen Waddle to the Broncos. Broncos inside a championship window,
- 28:34Speaker 3: quarterback on the rookie contract.
- 28:36Speaker 1: They are going for.
- 28:37Speaker 3: It right now, as they should, by the way, and
- 28:39Speaker 3: the Dolphins are rebuilding. Get a first and a third
- 28:41Speaker 3: round pick for Wadle.
- 28:42Speaker 4: Great trade, great trade, great trade for both You said
- 28:45Speaker 4: it right. The Denver Broncos have no needs. They have nothing.
- 28:48Speaker 4: That was their only need. I was a football team.
- 28:50Speaker 4: Their defensive set. They got an all star defense, they
- 28:53Speaker 4: got a good old line. They got two running backs
- 28:55Speaker 4: they like in R. J. Harvey and JK. Dobbins. The
- 28:58Speaker 4: tight ends good. They got second and third receivers. We
- 29:01Speaker 4: talked about a lot during the year. They're missing an
- 29:03Speaker 4: offensive playmaker. And then you couple that with Sean Payton
- 29:07Speaker 4: his offense. We know he knows how to get slot
- 29:10Speaker 4: guys open, whether it was Brandon Cooks back of the
- 29:12Speaker 4: day or Michael Thomas who was a bigger guy, but
- 29:15Speaker 4: they still got.
- 29:15Speaker 5: Him open over the middle of the field all the time.
- 29:18Speaker 4: Yeah, that's where Jalen Watta's gonna be able to take
- 29:20Speaker 4: pressure off the offense. It was a dire need for them.
- 29:24Speaker 4: So that's a big one. And then you know they.
- 29:26Speaker 5: Don't know what they're gonna get at the end of
- 29:27Speaker 5: the first round.
- 29:28Speaker 4: If somebody like that at receiver position is gonna be
- 29:30Speaker 4: available and Pa.
- 29:30Speaker 1: He ain't gonna be Wattle, right.
- 29:32Speaker 4: And he ain't gonna be Wattle, and he's not gonna
- 29:34Speaker 4: be seasoned veteran to where you go, Wait, we're a
- 29:36Speaker 4: super Bowl team, but I don't know how much we
- 29:37Speaker 4: can put on this guy's plate as a rookie, So
- 29:39Speaker 4: this is where you do that. And then, like you said, Miami, yeah,
- 29:43Speaker 4: they're looking to the future. The only thing I think
- 29:44Speaker 4: with Miami is just go, damn, can we leave some
- 29:47Speaker 4: players for Milik Willis so he can look good. Yes,
- 29:50Speaker 4: that was where it kind of surprised me that way,
- 29:52Speaker 4: but but you know, good for Miami to trim the
- 29:54Speaker 4: fat and start to hopefully build a young nucleus around
- 29:57Speaker 4: Malik Willis in the future.
- 29:58Speaker 1: I mean h is still there for now.
- 30:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I think he will be, because like this, you're
- 30:02Speaker 4: gonna have to do something crazy to get him.
- 30:05Speaker 5: Jeff Hafley's a defensive coach.
- 30:07Speaker 4: Bobby Slowick is Shanahan Kubiak, he wants to run the ball.
- 30:11Speaker 4: Mike McDaniel just had eight chan Kubiak was with Mike
- 30:14Speaker 4: McDaniel before, so he knows he fits that offense.
- 30:17Speaker 5: And he's making minimal money.
- 30:19Speaker 4: So it's not like one where you're like, oh, that'll
- 30:21Speaker 4: change our whole salary cap situation.
- 30:23Speaker 5: I think he's making like five million dollars this year. Yeah,
- 30:26Speaker 5: you'd have to blow them out of the water to
- 30:27Speaker 5: trade get him off their books.
- 30:29Speaker 3: I think, just quickly here, Chris for the Dolphin fans
- 30:32Speaker 3: who don't know about the two guys because it seems
- 30:34Speaker 3: like they have a plan and they're executing that plan.
- 30:37Speaker 3: They don't know the two guys the Dolphins hired as
- 30:39Speaker 3: head coach and general manager from the Green Bay Packers.
- 30:41Speaker 1: You like these guys. These guys are good, they know
- 30:43Speaker 1: what they're doing. Yes, totally.
- 30:44Speaker 4: Halfley is a football, football guy, and I mean he's impressive.
- 30:50Speaker 5: It's football all the time.
- 30:52Speaker 4: He's a defensive version of some of the offensive geniuses
- 30:55Speaker 4: we talked about. Plus he's got the ability I think,
- 30:58Speaker 4: to relate to players and command a room and all that.
- 31:01Speaker 4: I don't know Sullivan all that well, so I can't
- 31:04Speaker 4: speak to the personal aspect of it. All I can
- 31:07Speaker 4: speak to is Green Bay has been good at football
- 31:10Speaker 4: for twenty forever.
- 31:11Speaker 5: They're always relevant.
- 31:12Speaker 4: They know how to scout, they have a plan, they
- 31:15Speaker 4: know how to build a team. And that's why you
- 31:17Speaker 4: love Sullivan coming there from Green Bay.
- 31:19Speaker 1: All right?
- 31:20Speaker 3: PFT with Mike Florio every day on Peacock The Unbuttoned

- 31:27Speaker 1: We fucking miss it so much.
- 31:28Speaker 3: God, I mean, we wanted to get through the Super Bowl.
- 31:31Speaker 3: We did, and then a week later I missed football.
- 31:33Speaker 5: This is bull I'm with you. I'm with you.
- 31:35Speaker 4: I'm hoping you enjoy some basketball this weekend and get
- 31:38Speaker 4: going from there.
- 31:39Speaker 3: All right, man, we'll talk to you again, Sims. I
- 31:41Speaker 3: want to do this. I want to have you on
- 31:42Speaker 3: and talk about non football things.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Okay, all right? Can we do that? Can we? Okay?
- 31:47Speaker 1: I continue. I want to talk about football notes.
- 31:50Speaker 5: I want to talk about we can mix it together.
- 31:52Speaker 3: I want to talk about I want to talk about
- 31:54Speaker 3: the fact that he can't find time to go to
- 31:55Speaker 3: the dentist.
- 31:56Speaker 1: That's what I want.
- 31:56Speaker 5: To I'm missing a tooth. I freaking too.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Tell Mikey, hey, how long you've been missing that too?
- 32:03Speaker 5: Since August? I'm being missing that too, So I'm like,
- 32:06Speaker 5: I gotta go, Yeah, I gotta go.
- 32:08Speaker 1: Correlates with football seasons. You're the basketball in the football seasons.
