- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to The Favorites, the podcast from the Volume Podcast Network.
- 0:14Speaker 1: It's Thursday. That means it's time to enter the Thursday
- 0:21Speaker 1: Thunderdome Doom. On today's show, our special guests will compete
- 0:29Speaker 1: alongside my co host, my bff, my companion, professional sports
- 0:34Speaker 1: better Simon Hunter, in an epic test of wagers in
- 0:38Speaker 1: which That's quickly made this show the first universally beloved
- 0:44Speaker 1: media product since Here's Sometimes you want to go where
- 0:50Speaker 1: everybody knows your name. Hello Simon, Hello Chad. It's good
- 0:57Speaker 1: to be here, buddy. Good news for you. As you know,
- 1:00Speaker 1: my wife has taken very little interest in my career,
- 1:05Speaker 1: despite my ridiculous success as a premier executive, is the
- 1:13Speaker 1: ESPN author of seven books, as someone who was part
- 1:18Speaker 1: of the team that founded this company and then sold it,
- 1:21Speaker 1: as I remind everybody for two and forty million dollars,
- 1:24Speaker 1: does not care. But yesterday she was done listening to
- 1:27Speaker 1: a podcast when I happened to be downstairs, and she
- 1:30Speaker 1: looked at me and she goes, what's that funny podcast
- 1:33Speaker 1: you do? I heard one of the episodes you made
- 1:34Speaker 1: me listen to while we were driving, and I'm like,
- 1:37Speaker 1: the Favorites the Thunderdome. She goes, yeah, I could listen
- 1:40Speaker 1: to that, and then as she goes in to look
- 1:43Speaker 1: forward in Google, she goes to type in the podcast.
- 1:46Speaker 1: She goes, wait a second, what did you say it is?
- 1:49Speaker 1: Is it behind the Bets? I'm like, are you kidding me?
- 1:52Speaker 1: Behind the Bats the podcast that I started ESPN has
- 1:55Speaker 1: not been the name of this podcast for years. I
- 1:58Speaker 1: just gave you the name. But the good news is
- 2:01Speaker 1: all I take from this is she called it funny,
- 2:05Speaker 1: so we made it where this is us peaking right now?
- 2:07Speaker 1: We got some heat serious. I'll tell you what, Chad.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I've had people listen to the show The thunder Dome Edician.
- 2:15Speaker 1: They love it, so it's it's not surprising that she
- 2:17Speaker 1: would love the show. Well listen, speaking of heat, your
- 2:21Speaker 1: first challenger, I am super excited to get this guy
- 2:24Speaker 1: on because he has built social media empires from nothing
- 2:28Speaker 1: that I am completely in totally jealous of. Your first
- 2:32Speaker 1: challenger is an NBA expert, the host of the Buster
- 2:35Speaker 1: Show podcast, and the founder of Instagram's Hoops Nation. There
- 2:40Speaker 1: are no off days for this man. Welcome to the show. Buster, Sure,
- 2:45Speaker 1: how are you? Thank you so much for having me?
- 2:48Speaker 1: It is great to have you on the show. I
- 2:51Speaker 1: gotta know, before like we even get into it, explained
- 2:54Speaker 1: to people what you've done and how you've done it,
- 2:57Speaker 1: because what do you like? So I started when I
- 3:01Speaker 1: was third team. Fortunately I'm a little older than that
- 3:03Speaker 1: now I'm twenty. But I started blogging about fantasy basketball
- 3:07Speaker 1: when I was thirteen, originally on Facebook. Started to learn
- 3:11Speaker 1: the algorithms and how to edit videos when I was
- 3:13Speaker 1: fourteen or fifteen. Simultaneously started doing play by play broadcasting
- 3:17Speaker 1: for local high school sports. So started with j V
- 3:21Speaker 1: girls field hockey and slowly made my way up from
- 3:25Speaker 1: that to j V girls soccer, and at that point
- 3:28Speaker 1: that that jump is the biggest jump I've ever had,
- 3:31Speaker 1: by the way. But kept doing that. When I was seventeen,
- 3:35Speaker 1: won best in the country for play by play broadcasting,
- 3:38Speaker 1: and then just kept on building out Hoops Nation, you know,
- 3:42Speaker 1: sort of in Lieuid saying that you know, you you
- 3:46Speaker 1: mentioned there no days offseas, you know, just consistency and
- 3:50Speaker 1: keeping it up and starting to build a team, and
- 3:53Speaker 1: you know, making nice and friends with the NBA and
- 3:56Speaker 1: and other professional leagues just allowed that and also being
- 3:59Speaker 1: early on new platforms, you know, TikTok is a good example,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and in the first three months being on the platform
- 4:05Speaker 1: of growing a million followers a month, which which is
- 4:07Speaker 1: always fun, and just trying to create my dream media
- 4:11Speaker 1: outlet because as I realized very quickly and early on,
- 4:15Speaker 1: every major media company was not run by a sixteen
- 4:19Speaker 1: year old, probably for the better, but I thought that
- 4:21Speaker 1: there was room for something like that to exist, just
- 4:24Speaker 1: from a different lens. Well, listen, you've created my dream
- 4:29Speaker 1: media outlet, and I feel like you would get along
- 4:32Speaker 1: great with our next contestant, because he too, is also
- 4:38Speaker 1: all about following his passion and doing it his own way.
- 4:42Speaker 1: He is out to avenge his April lost here in
- 4:47Speaker 1: the Thunderdome. He is also our first repeat victim. He's
- 4:52Speaker 1: Action Network NBA expert, alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania,
- 4:57Speaker 1: former DJ boxing of Ficionado, currently falling in love with
- 5:02Speaker 1: the Phoenix Suns, Philadelphia's finest Mr Raheem Palmer. How today
- 5:10Speaker 1: are you bringing your A game against it? I'm always
- 5:13Speaker 1: bringing my game. They just got lucky last time. Well,
- 5:15Speaker 1: they've also had helped from me, because don't forget, at
- 5:18Speaker 1: the end of the day, I'm always rooting for Simon Hunter,
- 5:21Speaker 1: I'm going to tilt the game in his direction. I
- 5:23Speaker 1: want him to win desperately. He's my beff. Here's how
- 5:25Speaker 1: the game is played today. You'll answer two kinds of questions. First,
- 5:29Speaker 1: traditional trivia questions about sports, sports betting, the world at large. Second,
- 5:34Speaker 1: completely subjective and totally ass and I open ended questions
- 5:38Speaker 1: or prompts that I alone will judge to accumulate points.
- 5:43Speaker 1: You must answer the trivia questions correctly and also convinced
- 5:47Speaker 1: me that your responses to those open ended prompts are
- 5:51Speaker 1: better than the responses from your opponents, because, just like
- 5:54Speaker 1: sports betting, you can't get him. All right, let's begin
- 5:59Speaker 1: part on offensive versus offensive offenses exploded across the NBA
- 6:06Speaker 1: all year, and the regular season ended as the best
- 6:09Speaker 1: in NBA history for two point shooting, three point shooting,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and foul shooting. But I won't ask you about famous
- 6:18Speaker 1: NBA offensive performances. I'll ask you about famously offensive NBA performances.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Simon After a two thou ten loss to the Celtics,
- 6:30Speaker 1: the Pistons Charlie Villanueva accused Kevin Garnett of calling him
- 6:35Speaker 1: quote a cancer patient end quote. The offensive remark allegedly
- 6:41Speaker 1: related to villan Aueva having this autoimmune condition, the primary
- 6:48Speaker 1: symptom of which is hair loss on the scalp and face.
- 6:53Speaker 1: What is the name of the condition? I do know
- 6:57Speaker 1: the name. I have a friend whose brother has a
- 6:59Speaker 1: like terrible these scientific names. How about I'll give you.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I'll give you a hint. It starts with alo alopecia.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I'm giving it to you, not Mitchell. We're giving it
- 7:13Speaker 1: to him because he got it right away. He got
- 7:15Speaker 1: as soon as I gave him the hint. He got
- 7:17Speaker 1: it right away. Raheem. Before a Pacers Celtics game held
- 7:23Speaker 1: the day after Christmas, Indiana's chuck person, nicknamed the Rifleman,
- 7:28Speaker 1: told Larry Bird he was about to quote go on
- 7:32Speaker 1: a hunting trip. Bird responded that he had a Christmas
- 7:36Speaker 1: present for him, True to his word. As the Celtics
- 7:39Speaker 1: pulled away, late Bird shot a three pointer in front
- 7:42Speaker 1: of the Indiana bench. With the ball still midflight, Bird
- 7:47Speaker 1: turned a person on the bench and told him quote
- 7:50Speaker 1: Mary fucking Christmas, just as the ball went in. This
- 7:56Speaker 1: bit of holiday blasphemy is likely the greatest ship talk
- 8:00Speaker 1: ever directed a chuck person who became the second most
- 8:03Speaker 1: famous chuck in NBA history, right behind his former college
- 8:09Speaker 1: teammate who became a dream teamer alongside Larry Bird. That's
- 8:13Speaker 1: Charles Barkley. Charles Berkeley, By the way, I will never
- 8:18Speaker 1: get tired of Larry bird trash talking stories. The other
- 8:22Speaker 1: day I was talking to my fourteen year old son
- 8:26Speaker 1: about great NBA players, and we were talking about Larry
- 8:29Speaker 1: Bird and why Larry Bird was still so beloved, and
- 8:32Speaker 1: I think part of it has to do with the
- 8:35Speaker 1: trash talking buster. Here's your question. Latrelle Spreewell committed one
- 8:42Speaker 1: of the most offensive actions in modern NBA history when
- 8:46Speaker 1: he choked this head coach of the Warriors during practice,
- 8:50Speaker 1: earning a sixty eight game suspension. Coach of the Warriors
- 8:56Speaker 1: whose name is initials, would you say he first name
- 8:59Speaker 1: is what is initials? Initials? As in something you wear
- 9:05Speaker 1: to bed at night? With that one, p J, p
- 9:12Speaker 1: J Carlissimo, ah before my basketball time. I don't know
- 9:17Speaker 1: where you think I was going with what you wear
- 9:19Speaker 1: to bed at night? It's Pj's man. All right, here's
- 9:21Speaker 1: the prompt. Let's play dare to compare. Dare to compare
- 9:27Speaker 1: based on how the NBA playoffs have gone thus far,
- 9:30Speaker 1: compare any of the participating teams through a nine nineties
- 9:35Speaker 1: film Simon You Can Go First. Literally right popped in
- 9:40Speaker 1: my mind was Shawshank Redemption and him crawling down that
- 9:44Speaker 1: big tunnel of ship to get out of the prison.
- 9:46Speaker 1: And it just reminds me of the Knicks fans. They've
- 9:48Speaker 1: just been crawling down the sworde of ship for about
- 9:51Speaker 1: ten years, and last night you kind of felt it
- 9:54Speaker 1: where it was like they finally broke out and like
- 9:57Speaker 1: they're they're free. They gotta playoff, win at home, full
- 9:59Speaker 1: st at um. It just I don't know the Knicks.
- 10:01Speaker 1: The Knicks remind me of Charles Shank Redemption, of everything
- 10:03Speaker 1: they've gone through and they're finally at the end of
- 10:05Speaker 1: the tunnel. Wow, that is a really really good answer, Raheem,
- 10:10Speaker 1: your next I'm going with the usual suspects. Verbo can't
- 10:15Speaker 1: you know he said the greatest trick the Devil ever
- 10:17Speaker 1: put was convincing the world he didn't exist. That is
- 10:20Speaker 1: the Milwaukee Bucks right now. I mean people who have
- 10:23Speaker 1: slept on this team because they fizzled out of the
- 10:25Speaker 1: playoffs the last two years. I mean they're dominating the heat,
- 10:28Speaker 1: the Heat actually had seventy percent of the public on
- 10:31Speaker 1: them in game two. They have seventy percent of the
- 10:33Speaker 1: public on them tonight. People are still sleeping on this
- 10:36Speaker 1: Bucks team. They're gonna face a Brooklyn Nets team in
- 10:38Speaker 1: the second round, and everybody thinks that the Nets are
- 10:42Speaker 1: gonna dominate them. But I think Janice is going to
- 10:44Speaker 1: be the best player in that series. Janice is looking
- 10:46Speaker 1: like Kaiser. So say, that's how I look at it,
- 10:49Speaker 1: usual suspects. That is really good for a couple of reasons.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Let me unpack this. Number one, I completely agree with you.
- 10:57Speaker 1: I had the Bucks coming out of the East to
- 11:00Speaker 1: Janice playing Kaiser, so's that is next level that That's good, Okay,
- 11:07Speaker 1: buster alright. So my preface to this is, you know,
- 11:11Speaker 1: from the Knicks having gone from terrible to amazing and
- 11:15Speaker 1: nobody thought that they could do it, Happy Gilmore is
- 11:18Speaker 1: the is the movie. He's been the talk of the
- 11:20Speaker 1: course today with these amazingly bizarre behavior because there's no
- 11:25Speaker 1: reason that the Nick should be doing what they're doing
- 11:27Speaker 1: right now, but somehow they are, and that that is
- 11:30Speaker 1: why I choose that movie. Here's what's interesting. You guys
- 11:34Speaker 1: all chose possibly three of the most classic, most watched
- 11:41Speaker 1: movies from that decade. So even if like it wasn't
- 11:46Speaker 1: your era of movies, you totally found the right movies
- 11:50Speaker 1: to choose. This is one of the hardest decisions I've
- 11:53Speaker 1: have to make Normally, like one person gives a terrible,
- 11:56Speaker 1: terrible answer. I gotta go with Happy Gilmore because Happy
- 12:00Speaker 1: Gilmour to me, personifies the nineties and I do think
- 12:05Speaker 1: like having the Knicks be the answer, uh is the
- 12:09Speaker 1: most appropriate thing. Also, Adam Sandler, huge hoopster and Adam
- 12:14Speaker 1: Sandler on the court for Knicks games courtside in the
- 12:20Speaker 1: nineties is the most classic mash up there can be. Therefore, Buster,
- 12:25Speaker 1: you win the prompt Nice job, buddy, that's your home?
- 12:29Speaker 1: Are you too good for your home? Part two Experience Matters.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Phil Nicholson won the PGA Championship last weekend, becoming the
- 12:37Speaker 1: oldest major champion in golf history. His impressive victory calls
- 12:42Speaker 1: to mind other noted athletes who defeated Father Time on
- 12:46Speaker 1: their way to incredible athletic achievements. Buster olympian Derra Torres
- 12:53Speaker 1: became the oldest swimmer to earn a place on a
- 12:56Speaker 1: US Olympic team after qualifying at the age of forty one,
- 13:00Speaker 1: approved doubters wrong, winning silver medal in all three of
- 13:03Speaker 1: her events at the two thousand eight Summer Games held
- 13:07Speaker 1: in this city. Oh two thousand and eight was um
- 13:12Speaker 1: it was in Beijing, Beijing, Raheem in nineteen picture Satchel
- 13:19Speaker 1: Page through three shutout innings against the Red Sox. The
- 13:23Speaker 1: Athletics had signed Satchel for just one game, even though
- 13:27Speaker 1: he was fifty nine years old and hadn't pitched in
- 13:29Speaker 1: the majors in over a decade. The A's moved to
- 13:33Speaker 1: Oakland three years later, and we're based in this city
- 13:38Speaker 1: when Satchel Page pitched for them, the same city that
- 13:41Speaker 1: celebrated a two thousand fifteen World Series win. Um, I'm
- 13:47Speaker 1: a gas Kansas City, Kansas City. Very well done, Simon.
- 13:53Speaker 1: At the age of forty five, this boxer knocked out
- 13:56Speaker 1: Michael Moore to become the oldest heavyweight champion in history.
- 14:00Speaker 1: In that same year, he began endorsing a small cooking
- 14:05Speaker 1: appliance in that deal that eventually made him over two
- 14:10Speaker 1: hundred million dollars, far more than he earned in thirty
- 14:15Speaker 1: years of boxing. Yeah. Fun fact, the Hulk actually passed
- 14:20Speaker 1: on making the Foreman grill. So you're talking about George Foreman. Wow,
- 14:24Speaker 1: were they going to call it the fringno grill? I
- 14:27Speaker 1: don't know. I just remember reading that that like he
- 14:29Speaker 1: was one of the first people they pitched like two
- 14:31Speaker 1: years beforehand, and they just like, all right, we'll get
- 14:33Speaker 1: someone more famous on him because he like obviously passing
- 14:36Speaker 1: a good opportunity. Heartbreaker. I gotta tell you, when I
- 14:39Speaker 1: moved to New York in the nineties, my kitchen was
- 14:42Speaker 1: a galley kitchen that you couldn't even put your like
- 14:47Speaker 1: my wingspan, which is not that big, could not extend
- 14:50Speaker 1: in the kitchen. I had a George Foreman grill. Used
- 14:53Speaker 1: it NonStop, freaking loved it. The thing was a miracle
- 14:58Speaker 1: they hold up. I think we still have had the
- 15:00Speaker 1: same one for like twenty years. Still works. Yeah, I
- 15:03Speaker 1: love it. Cook some turkey burgers on that thing. It
- 15:07Speaker 1: was amazing. Alright. Part two here's the prompt. Are you
- 15:09Speaker 1: ready if you could become the oldest person to do
- 15:13Speaker 1: something in the sports world, what would you choose and why?
- 15:18Speaker 1: Raheem Europe first? Oh yeah, I mean yeah, I just
- 15:21Speaker 1: handed on it. I would love to become the oldest
- 15:24Speaker 1: boxing champion. I mean um, but not Hopkins won a championship.
- 15:30Speaker 1: George Foreman knocked out Michael Moore at forty six. So
- 15:33Speaker 1: I would love, you know, when I retire from the
- 15:36Speaker 1: Action Network, when I'm fifty, I'm gonna get into the ring.
- 15:40Speaker 1: My boxing name is gonna be Rod Jones Jr. And
- 15:42Speaker 1: I'm gonna start knocking people out. Here's what's fucking sad
- 15:47Speaker 1: as the fifty year old on the call for you
- 15:50Speaker 1: to think, Yeah, when I'm old and I'm fifty and
- 15:54Speaker 1: I'm retiring, that's what I want to do. Fuck you
- 15:59Speaker 1: all right, buster your next. When I picture, you know,
- 16:03Speaker 1: an older fella doing something, you know, I think part
- 16:08Speaker 1: of it is about what's like visually funny, and the
- 16:10Speaker 1: other part is like about what's impressive. And I think
- 16:13Speaker 1: a perfect combination of that would be to be a
- 16:17Speaker 1: slam dunk champion, the oldest slam dunk champ. You know
- 16:22Speaker 1: that there have been the shortest, there have been, the best,
- 16:25Speaker 1: there have been you know, lots of people who have
- 16:27Speaker 1: done it, But to be the oldest by a lot,
- 16:31Speaker 1: that would be cool. That would be amazing because I
- 16:34Speaker 1: could see, you know, as someone who's older, someone out
- 16:38Speaker 1: there with their expects, their kneepads, they're high tube socks,
- 16:44Speaker 1: maybe pulling up some Chuck Taylor's. Then that person can
- 16:49Speaker 1: actually jump out of the gym buster. I like where
- 16:52Speaker 1: you're going. And also it didn't impugne my age the
- 16:56Speaker 1: way Raheem did, so that also wins you some extra credit. Simon,
- 17:00Speaker 1: you're next, and if people are I don't know, work
- 17:03Speaker 1: for Peter please, this is just a fictional game show.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I actually would want to do this, just people always
- 17:09Speaker 1: get mad at me about this stuff. I would love
- 17:11Speaker 1: to be like a seventy nine year old matador where
- 17:14Speaker 1: it's like a bull can kill me at any moment,
- 17:16Speaker 1: but I'm also in the ring with a bull at
- 17:18Speaker 1: that age. I just feel like that would just be
- 17:20Speaker 1: a legendary visually because you see these guys, you make
- 17:22Speaker 1: one false step that get tossed in the air like
- 17:25Speaker 1: thirty ft. So it would just be hilarious to see
- 17:27Speaker 1: some old dude in the ring with a bull. You're
- 17:29Speaker 1: gonna win, because that is an amazing answer. And the
- 17:32Speaker 1: idea of a seventy year eighty year old being in
- 17:35Speaker 1: the ring with a bull, and the visceral feeling of
- 17:39Speaker 1: knowing that this person doesn't have the reflexes to get
- 17:41Speaker 1: out of the way at any moment. True story, true story.
- 17:45Speaker 1: I actually did run with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain
- 17:50Speaker 1: when I was in college and I was in Europe
- 17:52Speaker 1: between my junior and senior year. My buddy and I went,
- 17:55Speaker 1: took like an overnight train to get there. Showed up
- 17:58Speaker 1: in town. The town is full of just people dressed
- 18:02Speaker 1: in white with these red sashes, puke all over their
- 18:05Speaker 1: bodies because nobody sleeps. Everyone just drinks the entire night.
- 18:09Speaker 1: And then because you get up to run with the
- 18:11Speaker 1: bulls at eight in the morning, and so I am
- 18:15Speaker 1: being held up by my buddy, literally held up, and
- 18:18Speaker 1: everyone in the very small alley where the race starts
- 18:21Speaker 1: is screaming ole la la, and then they just they
- 18:27Speaker 1: they blow the horn. The bulls come out and you
- 18:30Speaker 1: are sprinting and you are lucky, lucky if you make
- 18:34Speaker 1: it out of there alive. You get into the bull ring,
- 18:36Speaker 1: and I'm in the bull ring and like I get
- 18:38Speaker 1: out of the main area and then there's like a
- 18:39Speaker 1: little circle area like a paddock that the bulls can
- 18:43Speaker 1: that you can get away. Someone open to the gate
- 18:45Speaker 1: of the paddock and it's between the bull ring and
- 18:48Speaker 1: the stands, and they let the bull inside, and the
- 18:51Speaker 1: bull is coming my way, and I reach up and
- 18:53Speaker 1: I try to grab onto the railings to lift myself
- 18:56Speaker 1: into the stands, and people start hitting my hands to
- 18:59Speaker 1: knock me off because they wanted me to see me
- 19:02Speaker 1: get hit by the ball. And at the last second,
- 19:04Speaker 1: someone distracted the bull and the bull went the other way.
- 19:07Speaker 1: It's like gets right out of like something like Star
- 19:09Speaker 1: Wars where they're like literally throwing in the kids with
- 19:11Speaker 1: that monster. It's exactly what it is, you know what
- 19:15Speaker 1: it is. It's like, uh Gladiator exactly. Yeah. I was
- 19:19Speaker 1: Russell Crowe. Yeah, I have no pity for it. You
- 19:22Speaker 1: chose to go there. You chose to roam the bulls.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Those people were doing you a favor. They said, you
- 19:25Speaker 1: want the bulls, Chad, We'll give you the bulls so
- 19:28Speaker 1: you can't. I did. Everyone apps to Europe like that summer.
- 19:32Speaker 1: They keep a diary. I did right this. In ten
- 19:36Speaker 1: years this may, I may look back and think this
- 19:39Speaker 1: was the greatest thing I've ever done, or who was
- 19:41Speaker 1: the stupidest thing I've ever done. I'm still on the
- 19:43Speaker 1: fence to be honest, all right, Part three the Old
- 19:46Speaker 1: Switcher Room. Late last week, the Jacksonville Jaguars signed Tim
- 19:50Speaker 1: Tebow with plans to convert the former Heisman Trophy winning
- 19:53Speaker 1: quarterback into a tight end. It sounds like an insane plan,
- 19:56Speaker 1: but it's a good reason to look back and talk
- 19:58Speaker 1: about some other famous athlete two switched positions buster In
- 20:02Speaker 1: late two thousand nine, This n C Double A and
- 20:04Speaker 1: NBA champion was a six three high school guard on
- 20:08Speaker 1: Chicago's South Side with zero scholarship offers. Less than ten
- 20:12Speaker 1: months later, he was six inches taller, converted to a
- 20:15Speaker 1: big man, and was the top rated high school recruit
- 20:19Speaker 1: of his two thousand eleven class. Who was Who is
- 20:23Speaker 1: this player? Said Anthony Davis. Anthony Davis Simon. One of
- 20:30Speaker 1: the most successful positions switches in history came from this
- 20:34Speaker 1: lightly recruited high school tight end who recorded eight catches
- 20:38Speaker 1: for seventy seven yards as a freshman at Central Michigan
- 20:41Speaker 1: before transferring to a Big ten program and switching to defense.
- 20:46Speaker 1: This player has since played in five Pro Bowls as
- 20:50Speaker 1: a defensive end and has twice led the NFL in sacks.
- 20:55Speaker 1: It's j J. Wat Right, Yes, j J. Watt. Thank you, sir.
- 20:59Speaker 1: We're heam USA Today's High School Player of the Year.
- 21:03Speaker 1: In this then St. Louis Cardinals picture developed a devastating
- 21:12Speaker 1: case of the yips. In the two thousand n l
- 21:16Speaker 1: c S. He'd go on to switch positions and by
- 21:20Speaker 1: two thousand seven was a serviceable major league out fielder.
- 21:25Speaker 1: And it hit a home run in his first start.
- 21:29Speaker 1: I have no clue. I'm sorry, Rick Ankiel. Wow, I've
- 21:34Speaker 1: never heard of this guy in my life. Yeah, I
- 21:36Speaker 1: think he played for what the Cardinals. I kind of
- 21:38Speaker 1: remember him from, like when he came back and like that,
- 21:40Speaker 1: this whole crazy story of him even be able to
- 21:42Speaker 1: make it back to the major leagues, crazy crazy story,
- 21:45Speaker 1: crazy story. Buster. Well, then then I don't feel bad
- 21:49Speaker 1: that you missed it, because you weren't that close. Buster.
- 21:52Speaker 1: This fourteen year NBA veteran was so famously adept at
- 21:56Speaker 1: switching positions that the sports band of Phoenix, Arizona wrote
- 22:02Speaker 1: a song about the six eight Frenchmen shortly after he
- 22:08Speaker 1: won the NBA's Most Improved Player award in two thousand six.
- 22:14Speaker 1: French player who won Most Improved in two thousand and six, Yes,
- 22:20Speaker 1: do you know what year? He was drafted. Is that
- 22:22Speaker 1: a hint? I can ask for two thousand three? A
- 22:26Speaker 1: two thousand three? The frenchness is throwing me off. Oh Man, Boris,
- 22:37Speaker 1: he frightens the opposition. Boris, you can play a position.
- 22:48Speaker 1: The Sons. You know you're introl because Boris did get
- 22:52Speaker 1: a trouble double Bors got it spurs right all right. Simon,
- 23:00Speaker 1: in the middle of a long and successful Major League
- 23:04Speaker 1: Baseball career, Brewers shortstop Robin Yount change positions and went
- 23:10Speaker 1: on to win a second MVP award as an outfielder.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Yunt is also the face of Robin Aid, a beloved
- 23:19Speaker 1: fundraising lemonade still sold in stores across Wisconsin's reminiscent of
- 23:25Speaker 1: another athlete inspired beverage, the iced Tea and Lemonade concoction,
- 23:30Speaker 1: unofficially named for this Hall of Famer Palmer. I don't
- 23:36Speaker 1: old Palmer. Simon is having his best performance ever in
- 23:41Speaker 1: the trivia category. Normally you're very good in the prompts,
- 23:46Speaker 1: really well in the trivia raheem. After a successful high
- 23:50Speaker 1: school career at quarterback, this future Super Bowl MVP and
- 23:55Speaker 1: Dancing with the Stars champion was converted to wide out
- 23:59Speaker 1: at the UNI Versity of Georgia was named first team
- 24:03Speaker 1: All SEC before the Steelers drafted him in nineteen Um
- 24:11Speaker 1: he said, Super Bowl m v P Yeah, um is
- 24:14Speaker 1: it um? Santonio Holmes hines Ward, Oh my god, wow, God,
- 24:21Speaker 1: he wants to MVP hines Ward. I did too. By
- 24:25Speaker 1: the way, I can't even remember, which must have been two.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Don't remember you don't remember the trick play? You had
- 24:31Speaker 1: a trick playing. In the following year, Randall l did
- 24:33Speaker 1: a trick play. It was like Picksburgh just had wide receivers.
- 24:36Speaker 1: I could throw bombs. Yes, I totally remember that. As
- 24:40Speaker 1: in Biana Lum, I remember Antoine Randell LL Part three.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Here's the prompt. New Jaguars coach Urban Meyer hopes reuniting
- 24:49Speaker 1: with Tim Tebow will cause a late career renaissance for
- 24:53Speaker 1: his former college quarterback. And I just want to say
- 24:57Speaker 1: one thing to the fans and everybody and get a nation.
- 25:01Speaker 1: I promise you one thing. A lot of good will
- 25:03Speaker 1: come out of this. God bless your job is to
- 25:06Speaker 1: take any past his prime professional athlete. Sell me on
- 25:12Speaker 1: how reuniting with his college coach would jump start his career.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Raheem Europe First. I'm gonna go with Reggie Bush. I
- 25:21Speaker 1: think if he reunited, reunited with Pete Carroll, it would
- 25:24Speaker 1: jump and start his career. For one, I mean there's
- 25:26Speaker 1: a couple of reasons. For one. Reggie Bush and the
- 25:29Speaker 1: modern NFL would be incredible. Um, I don't think he's
- 25:32Speaker 1: lost too much of his speed. I think, you know,
- 25:34Speaker 1: things opened up a little bit more in this modern NFL.
- 25:38Speaker 1: He would kind of be like a poor man's Alvacmar.
- 25:40Speaker 1: But also, you know, one of the biggest complaints for
- 25:44Speaker 1: Pete Carroll throughout this this whole era is that he
- 25:47Speaker 1: doesn't let Russell Wilson cook. And he's not letting Russell
- 25:51Speaker 1: Wilson cooking. He's giving Rasha Penny and you know, Chris
- 25:55Speaker 1: Carson and all these guys carries getting them the ball.
- 25:57Speaker 1: He's gonna get the ball to Reggie Bush. So I
- 25:59Speaker 1: think Reggie Bush would you know, he came back, even
- 26:03Speaker 1: at the age of thirty six. I think he'd make
- 26:05Speaker 1: a little impact because I don't think he's lost much seat. Wow,
- 26:08Speaker 1: the idea that Reggie Bush is only thirty six and
- 26:11Speaker 1: has been out of the league for that long, I
- 26:13Speaker 1: could totally see this. This This doesn't feel impossible in
- 26:19Speaker 1: any way. I like it, Simon, you go next. Obviously,
- 26:23Speaker 1: I really wanted to go with coach k and some
- 26:25Speaker 1: duke player, but no duke players really work on the NBA,
- 26:28Speaker 1: so I had to kind of skip that one. So
- 26:30Speaker 1: for me, it's kind of where I'm thinking back to Oregon.
- 26:34Speaker 1: They were so incredible at chip Kelly man and like
- 26:36Speaker 1: that offense was I mean just overtook the whole college scene,
- 26:41Speaker 1: and even when he came to the Eagles, chip Kelly
- 26:43Speaker 1: was pretty good. I just feel like Marcus Mariota the
- 26:46Speaker 1: only quarterback I've ever seen throw a touchdown to himself
- 26:48Speaker 1: in the playoffs. He's got potential and it never really
- 26:51Speaker 1: worked out where it's like he just never really had
- 26:54Speaker 1: a coach I optimize his skill set. So I would
- 26:56Speaker 1: love if Chip Kelly came back in NFL and had
- 26:58Speaker 1: like a team with Mariota, we d see that old
- 27:00Speaker 1: Oregon offense. So that definitely be my nomination. That is
- 27:04Speaker 1: really interesting too. It's so it's crazy that combinations you
- 27:10Speaker 1: guys are thinking of their you and rehieve they're so
- 27:14Speaker 1: Parallelster I'm going big, all right, he's a little past
- 27:20Speaker 1: his prime. I have been a supporter of said player
- 27:23Speaker 1: for a very long time. He is a national champion
- 27:27Speaker 1: collegiate player from the famous two thousand and three draft class.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Carmelo Anthony and his former Syracuse head coach that Combo
- 27:39Speaker 1: is the only Combo and Carmelo Anthony's entire career that
- 27:43Speaker 1: has won at the highest level, and they did it
- 27:47Speaker 1: an incredible fashion. Teams have been trying to get coach
- 27:50Speaker 1: Jim to Uh to come coach in the league. Hasn't done.
- 27:54Speaker 1: It hasn't worked. If that were to happen, the energy
- 27:57Speaker 1: would be insane and inevitably create a really good team.
- 28:02Speaker 1: You know, in Round one with the prompts, I was
- 28:06Speaker 1: leaning towards Raheem when he talked about usual suspects and
- 28:11Speaker 1: the Bucks, which I loved, and then you came in
- 28:14Speaker 1: over the top with Happy Gilmore and right now I've
- 28:18Speaker 1: been loving the idea of Reggie Bush and Pete Carroll
- 28:22Speaker 1: and then you give me Mellow and Beheim. Mellow to
- 28:24Speaker 1: me one of the most interesting NBA careers because he
- 28:31Speaker 1: went from being the guy who everyone thinks is this
- 28:33Speaker 1: superstar score but can't win in Denver to being a
- 28:37Speaker 1: guy who was a score but was selfish and the
- 28:40Speaker 1: wrong player for the Knicks, to being a guy who
- 28:43Speaker 1: was beloved for how he did on the international stage,
- 28:46Speaker 1: to a guy who's out of the league and now
- 28:48Speaker 1: making his bones as sort of the savvy veteran with
- 28:51Speaker 1: the Portland's team that is always on the cusp. Such
- 28:54Speaker 1: a mere curial figure. The problem for me on that
- 28:57Speaker 1: one Beeheim seems like the big gist asshole in the world.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Like the way he talks to people, the way he
- 29:05Speaker 1: treats media, how dismissive he is. I just don't like him.
- 29:10Speaker 1: You're an idiot and really disloyal person. A few other
- 29:15Speaker 1: things I could add, but I'm not gonna go there.
- 29:18Speaker 1: I can't give it to you because it's a personal animus.
- 29:21Speaker 1: It's a great answer answer you definitely come in a
- 29:25Speaker 1: strong second. I'm giving it Raheim. So right now, this
- 29:29Speaker 1: is exciting because right now, going into the final round,
- 29:33Speaker 1: Raheem is at three, Buster is at three, Simon is
- 29:38Speaker 1: at three. This is fantastic. We have the potential for
- 29:41Speaker 1: a runoff. The topic is NBA most improved player. First,
- 29:46Speaker 1: close your eyes, hold up the number of fingers of
- 29:50Speaker 1: what you would like to risk in your final wager amount.
- 29:54Speaker 1: So just close your eyes and hold up your fingers
- 29:56Speaker 1: one to three. Got it okay. Julius Randall of the
- 30:01Speaker 1: New York Knicks was just named the NBA's Most Improved Player.
- 30:06Speaker 1: He's trying to become the fourth recipient of the award
- 30:09Speaker 1: to win an NBA championship during his career. Here are
- 30:13Speaker 1: the other three. The first was the aforementioned Boris Dia,
- 30:17Speaker 1: who won the award in two thousand six with the
- 30:18Speaker 1: Sons and won a title with the Spurs in two
- 30:20Speaker 1: thousand fourteen. The latest was Pascal Siakam, who won the
- 30:23Speaker 1: award and a title in two thousand nineteen. The third
- 30:27Speaker 1: was this player, this player, who won the award in
- 30:31Speaker 1: two thousand eleven. He became the first player in almost
- 30:35Speaker 1: thirty years to post a thirty point thirty rebound game,
- 30:38Speaker 1: and his fifty three game double double streak was the
- 30:42Speaker 1: longest since the A B A n B A merger.
- 30:46Speaker 1: He was not selected as an All Star that season,
- 30:50Speaker 1: despite leading the NBA and rebounds per game, but was
- 30:55Speaker 1: chosen by the commissioner as an injury replacement for Yemming.
- 30:59Speaker 1: A few season mons later, he'd be traded to an
- 31:02Speaker 1: Eastern Conference power, where he'd secure his first and only
- 31:06Speaker 1: championship and where he remains to this day. Who was
- 31:09Speaker 1: the two thousand eleven most improved player in the NBA.
- 31:25Speaker 1: It's a curious thing. Make a one man another man
- 31:30Speaker 1: sing buster you like? My first inclination was la Marcus
- 31:45Speaker 1: Aldridge because the guy get you know, but he hasn't
- 31:49Speaker 1: he hasn't won, but he's on the Spurs now. No,
- 31:51Speaker 1: I can't think of who it is. You have lost
- 31:55Speaker 1: two points, you are down to one point. Raheem, what
- 31:59Speaker 1: is your answer? Kevin Love? Come on, Kevin Love? Six points?
- 32:06Speaker 1: Has six points? Simon? What's your answer? I got it?
- 32:10Speaker 1: I got Kevin Love. I can't believe it. You got
- 32:13Speaker 1: your cars? Grand finale answer? Raheem and Simon both have
- 32:19Speaker 1: six points? Do you guys deserve this one? I have
- 32:22Speaker 1: nothing to say congratulations. That was a good question. I
- 32:25Speaker 1: was tricky because I was like, who the hell won
- 32:27Speaker 1: a championship and they're still on that team because it's
- 32:30Speaker 1: the East, and I was like, oh, hey, Kevin Love,
- 32:32Speaker 1: you've just been sitting there for like six years. Now, Well,
- 32:35Speaker 1: Matt Mitchell, we need a runoff. Do you want to
- 32:37Speaker 1: take over for the runoff? Sure it is with great
- 32:41Speaker 1: pleasure that I announced yet another Thunderdome Sudden death challenge
- 32:46Speaker 1: between Simon Hunter and Raheim Palmer. This one will concern
- 32:50Speaker 1: the NBA Draft and the New York Knickerbockers. NBA draft
- 32:58Speaker 1: was loaded with talent. Kobe Iverson, Marbury Ray Allen, Steve Nash,
- 33:04Speaker 1: Marcus Camby, even Jermaine O'Neill was taken all the way
- 33:08Speaker 1: at seventeen. Unfortunately, the New York Knicks, who had three
- 33:13Speaker 1: first round picks that year, chose shitty players. There are
- 33:18Speaker 1: three first round draft picks were John Wallace, Walter McCarty,
- 33:23Speaker 1: and Dante Jones. Who's who of mediocrity. I'm especially fond
- 33:28Speaker 1: of John Wallace as he's a native of my own Rochester,
- 33:31Speaker 1: New York, and was coached by Jeff Van Gundy, who
- 33:35Speaker 1: once coached at my high school, McCoy Jesuit, and referred
- 33:38Speaker 1: to it as his favorite year coaching in his entire career.
- 33:41Speaker 1: But I digress. The question is John Wallace, Walter McCarty
- 33:47Speaker 1: Dante Jones played for a combined eighteen NBA seasons in total.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Without going over, how many career starts did those three
- 33:59Speaker 1: NBA players have? This is real drama chat. The stakes
- 34:03Speaker 1: for Simon would be for the first time in the
- 34:07Speaker 1: illustrious history of the Thunderdome, he will have gotten the
- 34:12Speaker 1: correct answer in the grand finale after wagering all of
- 34:16Speaker 1: his points, putting him in position to actually win. Has
- 34:21Speaker 1: he won the thunder done before? Chad? No, incredible, Simon,
- 34:27Speaker 1: you go first. You guys just love stacking it against me.
- 34:30Speaker 1: It's ridiculous. I have no idea. I don't even remember
- 34:32Speaker 1: what the question was. That's how I was, just like,
- 34:34Speaker 1: what the hell is this talking about? Right now? I'll go, um,
- 34:38Speaker 1: a thousand, No, change that to a hundred because apparently
- 34:41Speaker 1: they're terrible. So I guess a hundred one hundred is
- 34:44Speaker 1: Simon Hunter's answer for career starts for him. I think
- 34:48Speaker 1: John willis, what do you play like? Seven years? Um,
- 34:51Speaker 1: Dante Jones and Water? I have no idea who um
- 34:54Speaker 1: water is. I'm gonna go around one. John Wall started games,
- 35:02Speaker 1: Dante Jones had a foot injury and started zero, and
- 35:05Speaker 1: Walter McCarty got traded to the Celtics, which he started
- 35:09Speaker 1: quite a number of games hundred and eight. In fact,
- 35:13Speaker 1: eight is one fifty three Raheean Palmer almost gets it
- 35:17Speaker 1: on the nose. Yes, listen, man, listen, I sat off
- 35:25Speaker 1: the top of the show. You're a University of Pennsylvania alumnus.
- 35:29Speaker 1: The ability to look at numbers and contextualize them that
- 35:33Speaker 1: is really important. You've figured out how to do it today.
- 35:38Speaker 1: You are the Thursday Thunderdome Champion. Simon. I'm sorry, Fuster,
- 35:44Speaker 1: thank you for playing well, well done. Before we sign off,
- 35:47Speaker 1: here's a word from our fearless leader, Action Network CEO,
