- 0:57It allows us to be able to do all we do here in Dutch.
- 1:00Truly appreciate it. Now it's time for today's Episode'll let Georges do it.
- 1:04The deadly Ponds person will notice dangers my stock and trade. If the job's
- 1:11too tough for you to handle, you got a job for me. George
- 1:14Valentine right full details standard old comedy of California invites you to let George do
- 1:41it. Before we begin tonight's adventure, here's a performance report on heavy duty
- 1:55RPM motor oil. As you know, scientists tested hundreds of motor oils in
- 2:00laboratories and in crank cases before discovering heavy duty RPM. Only after these scientists
- 2:06were sure did they claim heavy duty RPM doubles engine life, the time between
- 2:10major overhauls due to lubrication, and now additional proof is being furnished by users
- 2:16themselves. One taxicab company, for example, operating in the tough grind all
- 2:22Cabs go through, found that heavy duty rpm actually reduced engine ware seventy one
- 2:28more than doubling engine life. So for top performance from your car, get
- 2:32heavy duty rpm motor oil at any independent Chevron gas station or standard station where
- 2:38they say and mean we take better care of your car. And now tonight's
- 2:51story The Deadly Pines, another adventure of George Valentine. To mister Valentine,
- 3:04I'm sure you've heard people talk romantically about towering pines, majestic pines, pines
- 3:08that fling their branches like banners against the sky. Well, I come from
- 3:14a lumbering family. I love trees, love them, and now I fear
- 3:19them with all my heart. And I'm not the only one. Everybody in
- 3:23this little town of High Timber as afraid because in the last few weeks,
- 3:25no less than four forest fires I've been deliberately set by someone in our midst
- 3:30So far we've been able to put them out, but there's always been next
- 3:34pine and the pines all around us, the deadly pines, and become a
- 3:39flaming coffin. I need help, mister Valentine in right away, sincerely,
- 3:45they've hear them. Oh no thanks, No more coffee, mister Aaron.
- 3:58How about hims Brooks. I think I've had enough thing. Okay, let's
- 4:02blow mine up again. Way, yeah, Steve, he sure. Seeing
- 4:06the whole town having the jitters, I might as well a close up this
- 4:11place, high timbered diner, high timber mortgages, more than I Yeah,
- 4:16I know, I'm mister hern As. I'm beginning to get it. You
- 4:19have a personal reason for wanting you to find out who sets those forest fires.
- 4:24I mean, in addition to your concern as a citizen of high Timber.
- 4:27Yeah, the sheriff, Sheriff Steppins doesn't seem to be able to find
- 4:30out anything about these fires. And I can't take any more chances. If
- 4:33the fire crowns and the big timber up there, I'll be ruined. You're
- 4:36in particular, mister hern I n more so than the others around here.
- 4:40That's why the others who have holdings hear me of other property, other investments.
- 4:44I don't. I just got out of school of forestry a couple of
- 4:46years ago, took over this place. My father left me, and well,
- 4:50if this thing is destroyed, I'll have nothing. Let's see. Well,
- 4:54tell me these fires. How come that they were always gotten under control?
- 4:58Oh that's the crazy part of it. Time. Whoever sets these fires
- 5:01first shirts in a place that has a natural fire line A load a lizard
- 5:06rock. Maybe that's the only thing that saved us, the forest and the
- 5:10trees. Yes, they're jealous of us, human beings who come in and
- 5:15take their glory away from them. Now I know. So they fight back?
- 5:19Oh? Yes, how they fight back? Why do people don't believe
- 5:24in superstitions anymore? And I aren't a good longer as good as they come.
- 5:28But the trees got even with me for no reason. Anybody could give
- 5:31a tree christ on me. Nah, I can't walk like a man no
- 5:35more. The trees fight back. Oh, this is so much nonsense.
- 5:40Somebody, some man sets those fires. This isn't any spirit of the forest.
- 5:45The trees fight back in many ways. They make men lumber men fight
- 5:48between themselves, hatred and greed and bigenous. They make pretty good weapons for
- 5:55the trees. These sort of indirect weapons. But the trees are smart.
- 5:59They been you a long time before he came here, and they're going to
- 6:02be standing a long time after we are gone. Valentine, please listened to
- 6:05me. These fires are senseless, first picking the spots with the natural fire
- 6:10lines, and second they've taken place in the holdings of different people around here.
- 6:15Mine C. J. Murdock's, Frank Wetton's, the sheriff's. A
- 6:17sheriff is a loverman too. Sure this is a small town stand as a
- 6:20sheriff because there was nobody running against them, A riff who won't be able
- 6:24to do anything against the tree. The last fire, mister harn, how
- 6:28long ago? Four days ago, and there Murdock holdings. Well maybe that
- 6:31was the last of them. Since there's no reason for these fires, maybe
- 6:34I'll stopped just a suddenly as the start cheer. I'd sure like to share
- 6:39your optimism as books, but I don't think I can. I know the
- 6:43fires won't stop. Well, I don't know how much. Yes, I
- 6:46can be, but might as well begin to look around. You still can't
- 7:00get over that I'm C. J. Murdock, my dear, Well that
- 7:04if lem me is a man's game and a dandy creature like me is in
- 7:09it. Or I can boss a cruel loggers and can swing an axe right
- 7:13alongside the best of them. That I don't dog. It is a tough
- 7:15game, and I don't ask for any favors because I'm the only woman in
- 7:19it. But about those fires, yes, I'm just as scared of them
- 7:24as our young friend Dave Harren. Well, tell me how much damage did
- 7:28the fire cause to your property? Well, a maker too burned out,
- 7:30but it looked as if it all was grown. We only have a volunteer
- 7:34fire department. We all worked like dogs to try and stop the fire from
- 7:38spreading. Are you are a practical, realistic woman, Missus Murdock. Missus
- 7:44Murdock, Oh, well, only way. There must be a good,
- 7:47solid reason for these fires, and I'd like you to think back and see
- 7:51if you can give us any sort of lead. Well, have you had
- 7:56any trouble with the other lumber owners? No? Oh, I did have
- 8:01some trouble to stand a couple of weeks ago. Stan Stan Kibrick, big
- 8:05blonde giant of a man, one of the best topers you find anywhere for
- 8:09the troublemaker, especially when he gets a couple of drinks in him, I
- 8:13fired him. Oh no, that sounds interesting. Stand still around high timber.
- 8:16Yeah, he's not working for anybody as far as I can see.
- 8:20Isn't it kind of unusual? He's as good as he is. Well.
- 8:22Frank Redmond had him for a while, but had a flight with him.
- 8:26So did they learn? I guess Stan's just no good for here. Well,
- 8:33thanks a lot of mis mur duck. At least it's the beginning Stevens
- 8:46Lumber. It's the little building over there, o Angel George. I don't
- 8:50like this whole situation. It's so easy for anyone to've got to fire strike
- 8:54him. Man, there's no sense to it. No one gains anything,
- 8:56Whister. I want to talk to you. You'd better listen good. Oh
- 9:01yeah, you stand friendly? Yeah, and get this straight, stranger,
- 9:07he must have come here for only one reason. You try to frame me
- 9:11for those fires, and I'll kill you. That's a nice friendly welcome to
- 9:16town. Stand one of them, hird you to snoop around. I don't
- 9:20care which one. I'm not getting framed and I'm not leaving hip him.
- 9:24Or do I find out who the firebug is? Well, then we can
- 9:30work together. Unhappy little family, you stay out of this mission. And
- 9:35mister, if you're going to see that fat faced sheriff, you can give
- 9:37him my message too. Stand. You must agree that you do seem to
- 9:41have a nice motive. Yeah, and you've got nothing to lose by burning
- 9:45down the property. If people you have no love for, I hate them
- 9:48thinking they're better than me. But this sort of thing catches up with them
- 9:52by itself. I don't have to do anything about it. The trees get
- 9:56back at them. Eye. That's the second time I heard that kind things
- 10:00standing. All I'm gonna see is that I don't get to be a fall
- 10:03guy. That I'm in on the finish. You or nobody else is gonna
- 10:07stop that. I'd remember that if I were you strangers. The trees fight
- 10:15back with hatred and green and violence and west em on our way to see
- 10:20the sheriff. Remember it's Devin's placebooks. Don't you don't you call me a
- 10:35Priory Bridman pirate? What do you watch that? So I'm being sure I'm
- 10:41onst Beet this night, and the more all you can do is hijack my
- 10:46best man. Are the bonuses they never get? But they're a great squad
- 10:50because you're the sheriff. You're sure you were here, and Viddler forget it,
- 10:54and Valentine guy to come here is going to get out. I don't
- 10:58need any everybody's friendly. We'll stop Empires without any hell. Promote, sir,
- 11:07I don't know. Thanks right dollar on some crack pots starting Empires from
- 11:13a reasonable and I what can I do for you? Folks? Hello,
- 11:20my name is Valentine's Sheriff, Stevens. Oh no, no, look here,
- 11:26valid, you don't need any medley here in Lytember. What all the
- 11:28door was open and you weren't exactly whispering. Well, that's the way is
- 11:33schooled to be. No, we don't need any hell. I'll give you
- 11:37my personal check for five hundred dollars if you catch the firebug before I'm forced
- 11:41to say out now, look here, ridwd I told you, Oh no,
- 11:48but that moll another fire. The fire don't make the fire man.
- 12:03How do you guys get over there? Down the hill? You're starting to
- 12:05catch old herd. Everyone of those pumps here and it's the wind ever ship's
- 12:11nows goodbye looking for I thought I told you to stay away from here.
- 12:16I don't ever carry every man's an. We're gonna turn the horse around.
- 12:20I don't want to get caught if we want to make a run for it.
- 12:33Child. It was such a close cool. It was so cool to
- 12:39send a control out. I almost had its licked, even though that rock
- 12:43slide over there made a gone good fireline. Lord, I can only get
- 12:46my hands on the low dunts so where everybody feels. But that doesn't do
- 12:50much good good really in the control now, yeah, just about angel.
- 12:54The man are just spreading around to keep watch a while, just in case
- 12:58the fire should break out again anywhere. A deadly pine? What do you
- 13:01mean by that? No, no, the dead pines. It's a little
- 13:05while ago they realize, fearful shot brought some coffee for your good pot coff.
- 13:11Oh you're a beautiful skywriding, very beautiful. Not much more a cripple
- 13:16Dick's lumberjack can do, is it here? You think this is the sheriff's
- 13:22property in it. That's the second time for the sheriff. That's right,
- 13:26Waddy, he's a big man. Steppins is so sure. He's a big
- 13:31man. Important. It's but the trees are bigger and after a while new
- 13:35trees will grow here with green leaves, and the leaves will rustle, and
- 13:41they did sound like the trees laughing at I just stop you. Nobody'll ever
- 13:43find out who's setting them fires, and maybe nobody will ever stopped your way.
- 13:48I'm a big boy on I don't believe in wood spirits or goblins or
- 13:54or deadly pines. And still here we are exact actually no place. Yeah,
- 14:01but there has to be some sense behind all this a pattern, and
- 14:05I'm just beginning to make it up. In just a moment, we'll return
- 14:24to to night's adventure of George Valentine. Maybe you're a driver who's managed to
- 14:30get through the winter on smooth tires. Well, summer is a different story.
- 14:35Heat is your tires worst enemy. Heat SAPs the mile a j out
- 14:39of tires, weakens them and causes blowouts. So if your tires are on
- 14:43their last miles, now's the time to switch over to brand new Atlas tires.
- 14:48Independent Chevron gas stations and Standard stations feature these famous Atlas tires, and
- 14:54they'll be glad to install them for you. With tough, rugged Atlas tires
- 14:58on your car, you know you're safe and secure. You'll find wide flat
- 15:03treads on Atlas tires. Treads that put more rubber on the road give you
- 15:07better traction, and they're thick treads with good deep grooves and hundreds of tough
- 15:11anti skid edges for greater safety. And Furthermore, Atlas tires are backed by
- 15:18a written warranty that gives you twelve months protection against tire damage from any road
- 15:22hazard, a warranty that's honored by more than thirty eight thousand Atlas steelers from
- 15:26coast to coast in the United States and in Canada. Two convenient monthly budget
- 15:33terms are also available. All in all, your best tire deal is Atlas,
- 15:37So plan now to stop in soon, get a tire check up,
- 15:41and ask about new Atlas tires at any standard station or independent Chevron gas station
- 15:46where they say and mean we take better care of your car. You come
- 16:10to the small lumbering community of High Timber because there have been a number of
- 16:14senseless, horrible forest fires. You find the town seething with all sorts of
- 16:18violent emotions, and you quickly get together a substantial list of suspects, ranging
- 16:22from a bitter crippled X logger to a sheriff who refuses your helpers. If
- 16:26it were poison, yes, many many things happen in a short time,
- 16:30But even if your name is George Valentine, you're nowhere near any solution.
- 16:34When the latest fire has finally burned itself out and you're ready to go back
- 16:38to town or Valenine, Mary see a minute, and others soon have to
- 16:45get hold of coopered back in the car, Nan, Sharon Hoson why I
- 16:51wipe You didn't misunderstand what I said to you back in the office. Misunderstand
- 16:56Why Sharon? How could I? Well, I mean I was upset everybody
- 17:03riding me about these fires and in front of Ryth and I well, anyway,
- 17:08I don't want you to go ahead and see if you can find out
- 17:11anything about this fire bug. I'll give you all the help. I can't.
- 17:15I ain't this change of heart, Shriff. It isn't due to the
- 17:18fact that this fire is on your holdings, But it was only a toss
- 17:19up whether we'd ever get an under control. Of course, that's part of
- 17:23the course, but it's also who's the case. I don't think I can
- 17:30ever solve. How do you go about looking for anybody? Nothing to start?
- 17:34Oh? Nothing to go on. Oh well, I'll probably have to
- 17:41sell out, Jeriff Shariff. I've got to see you. Oh okay,
- 17:45Rick, I'm busy right now. If you don't understand, I've been looking
- 17:48for you. I was way down the other side fighting the fire just got
- 17:52through, Okay, bay boy, take it easy for Valentine. I'm glad
- 17:56to see you're here. Maybe you can help. Well, things have changed,
- 18:00not you too. I was out here earlier this afternoon. Oh my
- 18:03property. Why I told you, Valentine, I was going to find out
- 18:07who set the fire. Yeah, or just before I noticed the fire broke
- 18:11out, somebody took a shot at me with a rifle. What's set?
- 18:15Yeah, I couldn't see who it was, but I guess who must the
- 18:17thought that I saw him wasn't taking any chances. I tried to chase him,
- 18:21but then the fire's yard exactly where you were when you were shot at,
- 18:23not exactly with pretty much, so what's showing your mind? But I
- 18:27was setting, Jock. But it's worth a chance while I still have all
- 18:30these people here, and it'd be very interesting if we found that empty cartridge.
- 18:41George, this is even more hopeless for looking for the proverbial lingle.
- 18:47Somebody's going on over there, Come on, and what's happening here? I'll
- 18:55take a ship with this. Yeah, yeah, you murther. Hey,
- 19:00whitey, Whitey, what's heaven? I found a cartridge back down here the
- 19:04tree. I found a cartrige. But somebody must have sneaked up behind me.
- 19:10How did you see who it was? And he he snakes me on
- 19:12the head. Yeah, yeah, the carriages cartridge is going well this time
- 19:17for good? Yeah, for good. Well, nothing you can do now,
- 19:22I'm going back to town. The firebug is taking no chances, no
- 19:26chances at all, George, not that for you here at the hotel.
- 19:40All at home doesn't know. So somebody must have watched him and then he
- 19:44went in the back, left it right there in little cash for just to
- 19:45hear it is. Let's see, Valentine, if you want to know who
- 19:52set the flies and why, if you had a lookout, point to night
- 19:56at ten alone. If you are not alone, I will know and will
- 20:00not be there. Uh huh. This is very instantly. There's no way
- 20:04trying to dress on the back, or it's just a trick to get you
- 20:08out there. Maybe, but there isn't another lead in this whole crazy thing,
- 20:12not even in the beginning of one. I'm gonna go along with your
- 20:17church. Yeah, I know you're doing angel and you know that's why I
- 20:19could never let you. Come on. Come on, I got to make
- 20:22some inquiries about the location. I'll look out point coulteration unc huama. He
- 20:38is certainly not one of our friends, but she's I'm as somebody found out
- 20:42about that note and made sure he'd never talked to me. Hey, who's
- 20:47that? What's going on? Oh? Oh, oh it's hard, it's
- 20:59hard. It's so him. Hey, what was on? Were on my
- 21:07ring? Time? The whole place is on fire? Call on which way?
- 21:18The has gotta be some way out? Oh? Which way shall I
- 21:22go? Let's say, come on, come on. From the time jumbles
- 21:30ahead, if the animal's head in this direction, this must be all calling
- 21:34out. You must just keep going, keep going, ring, Can you
- 21:44keep going? Or say? First? Oh oh no, oh, george
- 22:06o darling, you can't easy. For example, at the time, we
- 22:11couldn't believe it when we saw you stumble out of those planes quarters. We
- 22:14didn't think you'd ever be anywhere near. That was a close one, all
- 22:18right, looks like this fire was checked too, but it took every bit
- 22:22of luck all over his head. It wouldn't be much explaining to do if
- 22:26I never get out of it. People would just say I was looking for
- 22:29revernence and got tripped on the fire and never had a chance. I just
- 22:33couldn't sit in that hotel and do nothing. I finally went out to look
- 22:36out fright, and you weren't fair. And then I saw the fire and
- 22:40it had a mo terrible feeling. It could for me. That's your dead
- 22:42angel, But don't let me take it to the car and get your back
- 22:45in the town. You need a good night's rush, did I do?
- 22:48Everybody came out and see how you were. Carrie, Dave Heron share s
- 22:52Devin with the redman who right, They were also worried about you. Oh
- 22:56yeah, sure, everybody in my Timber is worried about me, especially the
- 23:00one who paid me that critesy visit on lookout points. But tomorrow morning will
- 23:04be time enough to go into that. Valentine. I ask you to come
- 23:18down here to Chef Steton's office, because even though I hired you, you
- 23:22become involved with all of us here in high Timber. Yeah, and since
- 23:26we've reached a decision about what we're gonna do. We thought we'd all get
- 23:27together this morning, a decision that sounds momentous. We're selling out all four
- 23:33of us. Oh I see, yes, after all the violence yesterday,
- 23:37what happened to stand and Whigi? Finally you, mister Valentine. We agree
- 23:41with mister Murdonca. We can't take any more chances. It wouldn't you be
- 23:44taking the truistic loss, all of you. We sure will, my dear,
- 23:48getting out with a pieces of pie is better than losing the whole dawn
- 23:51to bang. Miss Murdoca has already contacted some people in Portland who were willing
- 23:55to gamble. There's no way we can fight at Valentine. There's a mad
- 23:59man loose somewhere. That's only a question of time until he ruins all of
- 24:02us. That last fire was on my property. You know, when I
- 24:04took a long look at what was left for those five acres, always said
- 24:07to myself, let them call you a quitter. Carry but you are getting
- 24:11out of course, all of you should know that there's no madman or screwball
- 24:18involved in this case at all. But all the fires were set for a
- 24:22very sound financial reason. George, how do you think it down? Man?
- 24:26That's nonsense. Every one of the poor but has had at least one
- 24:27fire on his property suffered loss of money. Okay, okay, can give
- 24:33you one way this thing could work. Someone an unknown X wants to scare
- 24:37the neighbors and competitors into selling off a practically nothing No luk here, VALENTI,
- 24:41are you accused? You were running along when you share stepmons. So
- 24:45this X begins to set the fires, always making sure that there's a natural
- 24:51fire line around them. Doesn't want to destroy the timber that X is eventually
- 24:55going to get. But George Blue fires on now. Of course books he
- 24:57had to be to avoid SUSPICI. But the blackmail by fire I didn't work
- 25:03as quickly as X expected, and people including us began a snow groan.
- 25:07So X didn't even stop at attempted murder, and this morning excess plan has
- 25:11succeeded the whole thing. He'll doesn't make any business sense. We're all selling
- 25:17out to people outside of high Kimberg. Oh excess smart, Yeah, very
- 25:19smart. Stooges will buy up this doomed, ill starred timberland. X will
- 25:26operate the holdings through these stooges. The profits will be just as great,
- 25:29even though they're one step remove. Even to do all this for a business
- 25:32reach a couple of hundred thousand dollars will make some people do all sorts of
- 25:34incredible things. But still we're we no verdern You know who mister X is.
- 25:42Sure you will notice I never said it was mister Rex, because it's
- 25:48miss X, Isn't it carried? You got one there out of your head,
- 25:52Valentine, Oh, not at all. There's such a thing as reverse
- 25:56psychology carried and that's what made me think of you in the first place.
- 26:00Dave Herron, Sheriff, Stephens, Frank Redman, all of them talked about
- 26:03the possibility of having to sell out if the plans continued. They were sore
- 26:07in the Yale real Wold, but they did the natural thing and talked about
- 26:11the practical matter of selling out. You did, for sure. You never
- 26:15did carry the only woman in the crowd, the only woman in a tough,
- 26:18rough hall Man game. And you never talked to selling out, not
- 26:22until now, not until you've won. Well, I didn't talk about it
- 26:25because that was your real plan, and you are conscious of it. And
- 26:27we're so so careful to stay away from the subject. Just talk, talk,
- 26:33what proof of you guy? The only woman in a man's game.
- 26:37It double crossed your carrying that note which was left for me at the hotel.
- 26:42You can never tell who wrote it. How do you know that?
- 26:45In murder? Well right, it just stands to read scran cerry. When
- 26:51you got through printing the note so carefully you licked the end belote to seal
- 26:53it. You didn't even stop to think that it would have some liftstick on
- 26:57the back flap. I couldn't have notes and the enveloper in my hotel room
- 27:03carry any good police laboratory controller. Was your lipstick? All right? I
- 27:10did it. I'd have gotten away with the telling woman. She's on your

- 28:42night put it in and threw it away. Oh no, And and
- 28:48there I was talking about troof boasting about having definite proof. Oh it's lucky
- 28:55cherry confences. Tell yeah, a miracle. I'm on this state. There's
- 29:00a lot of truth for this business of reverse psychology, staying away from the
- 29:03subject which is really very much in your mind. I often wondered why you

- 31:06Welcome back. Well, there are a few things here. First,
- 31:11one of those rare episodes where nobody dies. Secondly, I was somewhat dubious
- 31:15of the final clue. You know, I've gotten a lot of envelopes in
- 31:21my life and none of them have had any lipstick on it, And I
- 31:29guess that raises a few possibilities. I guess the way it could be.
- 31:33One is that maybe the composition of lipstick was different back then, some sixty
- 31:40years ago, or perhaps they'd be more likely if a lady put on a
- 31:45thick amount of lipstick, and certainly there have been and I've seen women who
- 31:49have done that. If there are any lipstick experts in the audience, and
- 31:53that is not as strange a request as you may think, I'd love to
- 31:59hear if you have any thoughts on the probability of this particular outcome. The
- 32:02other thing to kind of with this type of show. What one thing that
- 32:10I find myself curious about is the lack of a specific location for so many
- 32:19of these adventures. Their home city is never named, though I think we
- 32:23can say it's Los Angeles for one of the suburbs based on clues, and
- 32:28the locations they're going to are also not known, though I would probably guess
- 32:32with something like this it'd probably be somewhere in northern California. It's interesting because
- 32:38there's so many other series that use real towns and cities, at least for
- 32:45at least for the home base. All Right, Well, that'll do it
- 32:50for today. Join us back here tomorrow for Sherlock Holmes in a week from
- 32:53today for another episode of Let George Do It. In the meanwhile, Cinder
