- 0:00Speaker 1: We could have played together, and I can say that.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I don't say that lightly. That hit was one of
- 0:05Speaker 1: the most judicious hits I've seen the New York Giants
- 0:09Speaker 1: in Super Bowl and I said, Man, you do can't
- 0:11Speaker 1: be this man, I need watch balls. I mean, Jard,
- 0:16Speaker 1: the fund number are gone.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast. I'm happy to
- 0:26Speaker 2: have a legend on today's show. Hall of Famer, super
- 0:30Speaker 2: Bowl champion, former Defensive Player of the Year, nine time
- 0:33Speaker 2: All Pro man. The list is long. Eleven time Pro bowler,
- 0:37Speaker 2: not just the dB. I played safety, kick return, punt return,
- 0:42Speaker 2: did it all. Two time interception leader in the National
- 0:45Speaker 2: Football League and still holds the record for most pick
- 0:48Speaker 2: sixes in NFL history with twelve. It's my honor to
- 0:53Speaker 2: welcome Rod Woodson to the show. Appreciate you joining.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Me, man, I appreciate you having me on. Sure.
- 0:58Speaker 2: It's my absolute pleasure. You are an absolute legend. Seventy
- 1:03Speaker 2: one interceptions in the National Football League. I mean, Dick
- 1:07Speaker 2: Knight train Lane is ahead, but I still, you know,
- 1:10Speaker 2: I got to go back and look at some of them.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Dick Knight train lane, but seventy one like that was crazy.
- 1:16Speaker 2: You got drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in eighty seven,
- 1:19Speaker 2: stepping into that old school Steelers culture. What was your
- 1:23Speaker 2: welcome to the league moment back then?
- 1:25Speaker 1: Ooh, shoot, that was like that was my first game
- 1:28Speaker 1: we played, I think with New Orleans, you know, and
- 1:31Speaker 1: I held out so my rookie year. It was eighty seven,
- 1:35Speaker 1: so that was a holdout year. So that remember the
- 1:37Speaker 1: scab players, so to speak. So the holdout and then
- 1:40Speaker 1: I didn't sign my rookie contract until October twenty eighth,
- 1:44Speaker 1: so only played about five six games, seven games. When
- 1:49Speaker 1: I remember my first game kick returner to have me
- 1:51Speaker 1: kick return. You know, the college brud, you know, you
- 1:53Speaker 1: kick return, you break, hopens up, it stays open in college.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Not so much in the National Football League. I see
- 2:02Speaker 1: the whole I hit it, dude, I got ah. I
- 2:06Speaker 1: go this way, ball, go that way. One more recovery.
- 2:10Speaker 1: They get the ball in the five yard line. We
- 2:11Speaker 1: lose by three points. I mean, I was devastated, you know,
- 2:15Speaker 1: coming in my first game. But uh, that was my
- 2:18Speaker 1: weapont in the NFL moment because I just thought I
- 2:22Speaker 1: was fast, I knew I could run. I was like, man,
- 2:25Speaker 1: all these dudes can run. Everybody can run football league.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I mean the best of the best of the best
- 2:29Speaker 1: of the world. But I was lucky. I had John
- 2:34Speaker 1: star Warts was still playing, Donnie Shell was still playing,
- 2:37Speaker 1: and Donnie was Donnie became. They peered me up with
- 2:40Speaker 1: Donnie on the road games, so I got a lot
- 2:43Speaker 1: of knowledge from Donnie. Mike Webby. Webby was still playing,
- 2:48Speaker 1: so I got I got a lot of love from
- 2:50Speaker 1: those older guys to teach me the right way. They
- 2:54Speaker 1: don't hang your hat. Its happens. It happens in the
- 2:56Speaker 1: nash Footbay. Everybody's those moments where you get you get got.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Right, no question about it now.
- 3:03Speaker 2: And that's it's such a hard lesson for you to
- 3:06Speaker 2: learn because you come from being in college being so dominant,
- 3:09Speaker 2: and then you get you get that wake up. But
- 3:11Speaker 2: then it's like you got to snap back into that,
- 3:14Speaker 2: like I can play with these dudes. So when when
- 3:16Speaker 2: did that happen for you when you say, hey, man,
- 3:19Speaker 2: I can I can still play. I can play in
- 3:21Speaker 2: this league too.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, I never it was kind of crazy, Sharon,
- 3:26Speaker 1: because I'm a quiet dude. But I never had a
- 3:28Speaker 1: problem with me believing in who I am. I was
- 3:32Speaker 1: the youngest three boys. So my oldest brother, my older brother,
- 3:35Speaker 1: middle brother used to be snot out of me, but
- 3:38Speaker 1: we used to like we used to race, so Reynolds
- 3:41Speaker 1: and Chestnut used to play against projects and everything. So
- 3:45Speaker 1: we had track meets, we had football, we had basketball,
- 3:49Speaker 1: we had baseball, and we started running all the dustin
- 3:53Speaker 1: cats and they was four or five years older than me,
- 3:56Speaker 1: and I'm like, right, So I kind of gave me
- 4:00Speaker 1: confidence of who I was and I never but I
- 4:04Speaker 1: never really had a doubt because my brother beat me
- 4:09Speaker 1: up all the time, so it kind of toughened me
- 4:11Speaker 1: up mentally. And then when I got into the league,
- 4:15Speaker 1: I was blessed with Tony Dungey, So I had Tony
- 4:18Speaker 1: as my dB coach and my DE coordinator. So I
- 4:21Speaker 1: played safety in college. Right, I played safety in college.
- 4:24Speaker 1: They moved me to corner when I ran my forty
- 4:26Speaker 1: at the combine and so I had to learn how
- 4:29Speaker 1: to play out there. But to to say that, I like,
- 4:35Speaker 1: I think there was moments that I had where I
- 4:38Speaker 1: had to learn how to play corner.
- 4:40Speaker 3: M H.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I had some doubt because I remember more time I
- 4:43Speaker 1: was playing against the Buffalo Bills and James Lofton out there.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Ja Lofton runs right and Jamis run right by me.
- 4:55Speaker 1: I kept back over. I ain't even turn. They throw
- 5:00Speaker 1: the ball touchdown and I come to the sideline and
- 5:04Speaker 1: Tony looked at me and said, what were you thinking?
- 5:07Speaker 1: I said, coach, I have no idea, you know, but
- 5:11Speaker 1: I was like, so I had to like figure out
- 5:13Speaker 1: how to like play that position. But once it was
- 5:17Speaker 1: like year I would say, because we were kind of
- 5:21Speaker 1: young in our secondary. We have five rookies in our secondary,
- 5:23Speaker 1: my rookie, my rookie year. So I think that the
- 5:26Speaker 1: second year, probably three fourths way through the season, where
- 5:30Speaker 1: I started saying, oh yeah, yeah, I kind of feel
- 5:35Speaker 1: for this. I still had Tony there. Tony leaves after that,
- 5:39Speaker 1: and then a guy named Rod Russ comes in and
- 5:43Speaker 1: Rod week like week two, cusses me out, you mother efflin,
- 5:48Speaker 1: I mean, and gave it to me and he said,
- 5:51Speaker 1: you need to learn this game. I was like, she,
- 5:55Speaker 1: I said, well, teach me. And me and him went
- 5:59Speaker 1: into the office for about four weeks and his first
- 6:03Speaker 1: question to me sharing was how many formations can office
- 6:06Speaker 1: get into? You know, I'm thinking, I'm like, oh, shot
- 6:13Speaker 1: five hundred. He was like, man, how many eligible receivers?
- 6:17Speaker 1: I said five. He said they can get a fire
- 6:19Speaker 1: formation and I was like what He was like, yeah,
- 6:22Speaker 1: they what they do. They try to confuse you with
- 6:25Speaker 1: these different people. But if a receiver is by himself
- 6:28Speaker 1: on the backside and he's flexed, he's the X. Don't
- 6:31Speaker 1: matter if he's a tight end, don't matter if he's
- 6:33Speaker 1: a running back. So he's going to be the ex
- 6:35Speaker 1: for their offense. We just we make him the running
- 6:38Speaker 1: back all the time. So it confuses us on the
- 6:41Speaker 1: defensive side. But they move these pieces around and then
- 6:44Speaker 1: the final formation comes out and they only run about
- 6:47Speaker 1: five plays. So we go through the process. It took
- 6:51Speaker 1: me about four weeks and really, like really really believe it.
- 6:55Speaker 1: That green light clicks on out, like, oh kid Natti here, coach,
- 6:59Speaker 1: that's all they's it. That's all they do. They disguise
- 7:03Speaker 1: what they're doing, their kind, their attentions, and you just
- 7:05Speaker 1: gotta believe it. I said, oh, she don't worry about that,
- 7:08Speaker 1: and I'm gonna believe it. And then after that I
- 7:11Speaker 1: went to seven straight Pro Bowls as the corners at corner.
- 7:14Speaker 1: But it was for it was because of having a
- 7:16Speaker 1: guy like Tony initially because I was messing up and Tony,
- 7:20Speaker 1: you know, Tony don't yell and scream and all that stuff.
- 7:23Speaker 1: But then I need a rod. After Tony left, could
- 7:26Speaker 1: Rod got me straight. He got me straight up here.
- 7:29Speaker 1: But he also taught me the game. So I think
- 7:33Speaker 1: if I didn't go to Pittsburgh, I probably wouldn't have
- 7:35Speaker 1: been as blessed. But going there, having Tony give me
- 7:41Speaker 1: love at the cornerback spot and let me feel that
- 7:45Speaker 1: I'm worthy to be out there, I never had that
- 7:49Speaker 1: self doubt. But getting that love from your coaches and
- 7:53Speaker 1: then learning from those old heads, those ogs, I mean
- 7:58Speaker 1: that was I was overly blessed. And then after that,
- 8:01Speaker 1: Dick la Bow comes in for five years, so you know,
- 8:05Speaker 1: my ten years of Pittsburgh. Then I was like I
- 8:08Speaker 1: was overly blessed with too much knowledge at the coaching position,
- 8:12Speaker 1: and I just had to be able to exorber wanting
- 8:15Speaker 1: to launch trauma.
- 8:17Speaker 2: And that takes some humility as well, is being open
- 8:21Speaker 2: to those conversations and open to the learning. I think
- 8:24Speaker 2: the thing that helped me develop fast because I honestly
- 8:30Speaker 2: I'm not a great peddler, so I couldn't pedal So
- 8:34Speaker 2: I'm six three with big feet and not a great pedal.
- 8:37Speaker 2: And so because I came from receiver in college, and
- 8:41Speaker 2: so I played receiver in my first three years. And
- 8:44Speaker 2: Bill Walsh literally came in and installed the West Coast
- 8:47Speaker 2: for us my first year at Stanford, so actually was
- 8:51Speaker 2: my second year because Harball brought him in, and so
- 8:54Speaker 2: I learned it. We learned it from the master. So
- 8:55Speaker 2: we learned it from the beginning. And you know, most
- 8:57Speaker 2: offenses in the National Football League, the found their West Coast,
- 9:01Speaker 2: like at their roots, at their screws, at their their
- 9:04Speaker 2: their West Coast. So once I learn to play every
- 9:08Speaker 2: position in that offense, then my junior year I switch
- 9:12Speaker 2: over to defense. Now I can't pedal, I can't peddle.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Now I can't peddle at all. But I know the
- 9:18Speaker 2: route tree. I know where everybody's supposed to be. I
- 9:20Speaker 2: know every combination of routes. I know every split, every
- 9:23Speaker 2: like the spacing of everything when they're in a bunch,
- 9:26Speaker 2: what like process of elimination. I'm super smart with that,
- 9:30Speaker 2: so I understand every bit of it. So when I
- 9:32Speaker 2: get to the league and get an opportunity to play,
- 9:35Speaker 2: I tell Pete like I'm like, Pete, I'm gonna play
- 9:37Speaker 2: with my butt to the sideline. I'm gonna almost like
- 9:39Speaker 2: get halfway to running the route because that's gonna put
- 9:43Speaker 2: me in a better position to be able to cover
- 9:44Speaker 2: these guys like you want. If I get in a pedal,
- 9:46Speaker 2: they're gonna be able to beat me, Like I'm gonna
- 9:49Speaker 2: get beat more times than not. But if you let
- 9:51Speaker 2: me play and it's half cocked like shuffle, I can.
- 9:55Speaker 2: I promise you I can get I can break anywhere
- 9:57Speaker 2: you want me to be. And I'm already anticipating the
- 10:00Speaker 2: routes that I'm going to see, the routes that I'm
- 10:01Speaker 2: gonna get. And so in my first three years in
- 10:05Speaker 2: the National Football League, I had twenty interceptions because it
- 10:08Speaker 2: was it just made sense to me.
- 10:10Speaker 1: It was like, hey, Pete, let you do it.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Pete, let me do it now. He told me this, go.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Ahead, now go no, I fin to finish.
- 10:18Speaker 3: What he told me.
- 10:19Speaker 2: He said, hey, you can do this, but if it
- 10:23Speaker 2: doesn't work, this is your career.
- 10:25Speaker 3: You know what I mean. Like, if it doesn't work.
- 10:26Speaker 1: You haven sit down abolutely. And but you know that's
- 10:30Speaker 1: what I like. That's to me. Great coaches allow you
- 10:33Speaker 1: to be you like you knew, you knew your negatives right.
- 10:38Speaker 1: You're not a great back color, you know, but you're long.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Like I rated you coming out. I grated you coming
- 10:45Speaker 1: out your short shuttle and your three cone were fast
- 10:50Speaker 1: like I mean. And when I look at like I
- 10:52Speaker 1: got you on my I got like a little uh,
- 10:56Speaker 1: like a board of all the really good players have
- 10:58Speaker 1: come out the last twenty five five years and the
- 11:02Speaker 1: guys who are played at the really high level, and
- 11:04Speaker 1: you're one of them that I have on the board.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I'm like, you know, your forty times wasn't like four
- 11:10Speaker 1: to three, four to two, but you don't need a
- 11:12Speaker 1: four to two when you're a short shuttle and their
- 11:14Speaker 1: three cones as fast as you were, And I was like,
- 11:18Speaker 1: appreciate that. So what I've learned when I started coaching
- 11:22Speaker 1: is that every player is different. Some guys got tight hits,
- 11:25Speaker 1: some guys came back cuddle, some guys came back cuddle.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Some guys don't like press. And you got to allow
- 11:30Speaker 1: the really good coaches allow players to be themselves inside
- 11:33Speaker 1: of their system as long as you don't go rogue
- 11:35Speaker 1: right right, and then you gotta you gotta make plays
- 11:38Speaker 1: when they allow you to do that, right, you gotta
- 11:39Speaker 1: make plays so they can they can say, see, look,
- 11:42Speaker 1: my boy, he's doing this thing. I'm allowing to do
- 11:45Speaker 1: it all right. I ain't gonna let everybody do it,
- 11:50Speaker 1: but he can do it right.
- 11:52Speaker 3: And that was me.
- 11:52Speaker 2: That was a conversation sometimes in those rooms is hey,
- 11:56Speaker 2: you guys, stop doing it because it's not working for
- 11:58Speaker 2: you. You can't play but to the same line and make
- 12:01Speaker 2: the place and run this dig for the receiver or
- 12:03Speaker 2: break on this pass like he's doing. So just play
- 12:06Speaker 2: in your pedal because you're a good peddler. You can
- 12:08Speaker 2: you can feel, you can go with the weave and
- 12:10Speaker 2: you can play.
- 12:11Speaker 3: It that way. But he's better at this than you guys.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Right. See that's a good see. That's that's what I love.
- 12:16Speaker 1: That's what because Tony allowed me to be me because
- 12:19Speaker 1: I used to jump out of my stands so I
- 12:21Speaker 1: would be in my I'll be impressed and I would
- 12:23Speaker 1: always jump and Tony would try to get me to
- 12:28Speaker 1: get out of the jump. And then Dick comes in
- 12:30Speaker 1: and Dick was like, oh you jump by your stands.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Oh you fine, He was like, because you can get
- 12:36Speaker 1: out of it, right, he said lots.
- 12:39Speaker 3: So did you did you hop to? Why?
- 12:41Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 12:41Speaker 3: I was narrow hopped a why okay?
- 12:44Speaker 1: And I never had I mean when I first started,
- 12:47Speaker 1: I would be a little lower than I wanted to be,
- 12:50Speaker 1: and Dick got me more up here, more upright, so
- 12:54Speaker 1: being more in an athletic position, so I wouldn't because
- 12:57Speaker 1: every time I had to really start running, I had
- 12:59Speaker 1: to raise up anyway, right, Why have the waste of movements?
- 13:03Speaker 1: And he can have these weights of steps. So even
- 13:06Speaker 1: in year five, I got better because Dick was like, look,
- 13:10Speaker 1: you do this, You're going to get that much better.
- 13:13Speaker 1: And then heck, I think the following the following year,
- 13:16Speaker 1: that's what I was doing. The player of the year.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Wow.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Wow, See that's that's that was another huge That's a
- 13:23Speaker 2: great point because that was another huge change from college
- 13:27Speaker 2: to the National Football League. Is my stance because I
- 13:30Speaker 2: was so they told me to be so low in
- 13:32Speaker 2: college and I'm six three, and it's like they're like,
- 13:34Speaker 2: you got to get low in your stance, and I'm like, bro,
- 13:36Speaker 2: by the time I raise up, they're by me because
- 13:38Speaker 2: you want me to be so low, and I'm like,
- 13:40Speaker 2: if you let me be in a comfortable stance. I
- 13:42Speaker 2: can move with them, but it's like, like you said,
- 13:46Speaker 2: I got to raise up. So when I got to Seattle,
- 13:48Speaker 2: Pete got in front of me literally maybe first or
- 13:51Speaker 2: second day out there, and he worked on all of
- 13:54Speaker 2: us with our stands, and he was like, hey, getting
- 13:55Speaker 2: a stance you could stand in for two hours. And
- 13:58Speaker 2: I was like, I can't stand low for two hours.
- 14:00Speaker 2: I'm almost like I got a slight bend in the knee,
- 14:03Speaker 2: but it's almost like a basketball like like I got
- 14:05Speaker 2: a slight balance. And he was like, can you stand
- 14:08Speaker 2: in this for two hours? If I came back in
- 14:10Speaker 2: two hours, you'd be in the same position. I was like, yeah,
- 14:12Speaker 2: it's like this is your stance.
- 14:14Speaker 1: I was like, that's a real good point right there.
- 14:17Speaker 1: I never heard of it, said like that.
- 14:20Speaker 3: That's what is That's how I got us.
- 14:22Speaker 1: I like that. I like that saying I was chilling.
- 14:25Speaker 1: I'm still in that.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Yeah it was. It worked.
- 14:29Speaker 2: It worked for me, and ever since then, my press
- 14:31Speaker 2: got better, my step replaced, my step kid got better,
- 14:35Speaker 2: and I was so much more patient and comfortable because
- 14:38Speaker 2: I didn't feel like now I would sometimes jump in
- 14:40Speaker 2: my stance like you did, Like if I had a
- 14:43Speaker 2: quicker receiver that I was dealing with, and I wanted
- 14:45Speaker 2: to like speed him up. I would almost jump, like
- 14:48Speaker 2: almost not like a half an inch forward to like
- 14:51Speaker 2: speed him up.
- 14:52Speaker 3: So they can't do all that, Like, no, let's go now.
- 14:56Speaker 1: You're right because that because he taught did he did?
- 15:01Speaker 1: He teach you, guys, what is a pure step?
- 15:03Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 15:04Speaker 1: Is that what he called it?
- 15:05Speaker 3: The peer stuff?
- 15:06Speaker 1: Yeah, so he called the peer step, So I know.
- 15:09Speaker 1: So when I was coaching with Kenny, Kenny had us
- 15:12Speaker 1: teaching it, and I was like, I said, give me
- 15:15Speaker 1: the philosophy behind. To Kenny, I said, I know you
- 15:17Speaker 1: want him to be patient. But then once I learned it,
- 15:20Speaker 1: I was like, oh, okay, I see, I see what
- 15:22Speaker 1: the overall aspect, what what you're trying to You're trying
- 15:24Speaker 1: to get everybody to slow down, slow your head down,
- 15:27Speaker 1: like he calm. I said, that's the at the end
- 15:30Speaker 1: of the end of the day, that's what you want
- 15:31Speaker 1: from your players anyway. So I'm like, so that's that's
- 15:35Speaker 1: really good like what Pete said to you guys. But
- 15:39Speaker 1: what he also lets you do though he saw he
- 15:42Speaker 1: saw that you're there, but he said they he can
- 15:45Speaker 1: bail and he can play just as good. So I'm
- 15:49Speaker 1: gonna let him Play'm gonna let him bail when he want.
- 15:51Speaker 2: To bail, and so we would. We would usually only
- 15:54Speaker 2: bail if if we had two displaced. So that was
- 15:57Speaker 2: our cover. Three philosophy is, hey, if you single, if
- 16:01Speaker 2: you got a single receiver, no, no two displaced, even
- 16:04Speaker 2: if it's a tidy end, even if you're on a Z,
- 16:05Speaker 2: you're you're pretty much in man your man. Yeah, you
- 16:08Speaker 2: press man like he runs a fade. You got him,
- 16:11Speaker 2: come back, you got him, dig you got him everywhere. Now,
- 16:13Speaker 2: if you got two displaced, you have to bail because
- 16:15Speaker 2: you have to see two, because you got the vertical
- 16:17Speaker 2: of two. And so, but it would help me see
- 16:22Speaker 2: the picture. And we had such a smart defense that, hey,
- 16:26Speaker 2: if I got two displays and two starts to go over,
- 16:29Speaker 2: then I know one's coming to replace him in that zone.
- 16:32Speaker 2: It's either going to be a dig or a post.
- 16:34Speaker 2: So hey, hey, Bobby, I need you to go with that,
- 16:37Speaker 2: go with that one. I got this dig. I'm gonna
- 16:39Speaker 2: drive the dig. I'm gonna drive the ram route or
- 16:42Speaker 2: whatever you guys call it, right, and I'll probably pick
- 16:44Speaker 2: that or you know what, I mean, we had such
- 16:46Speaker 2: a great feel for things like that, and it was
- 16:48Speaker 2: a lot to do with just you can only attack
- 16:50Speaker 2: cover three in what we were doing so many different
- 16:52Speaker 2: ways and we played man. It was you expect the
- 16:55Speaker 2: three concepts because they think you're gonna be in three.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Even when we're in man, You're like, hey, they're gonna
- 16:59Speaker 2: run tha here because they think we're in three.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Asks your questions. So if you guys were in displaced
- 17:06Speaker 1: two but you had a wide gap between one and two,
- 17:10Speaker 1: did you guys ever lock it?
- 17:13Speaker 2: Rare? We started to do it later on in our
- 17:15Speaker 2: career in my career, but rarely rarely because because it
- 17:20Speaker 2: would it would cause such an issue. We would still
- 17:22Speaker 2: have the buzz or buzz out there. He would almost
- 17:25Speaker 2: be between one and two, so he buzzed because you
- 17:29Speaker 2: didn't want to create that big gap when one did
- 17:32Speaker 2: the quick hitch and two rand of seven, and so
- 17:36Speaker 2: I would almost angle towards two to overlap to close
- 17:39Speaker 2: that lane.
- 17:40Speaker 3: So there's not a space.
- 17:43Speaker 4: Okay, okay, you know I like that because it's good
- 17:48Speaker 4: to talk to guys who really understand ball, but understand
- 17:52Speaker 4: the cornerback position in the aspect of what offenses are
- 17:56Speaker 4: trying to do to defense and how you play inside
- 17:58Speaker 4: of that because at the end of the day, so
- 18:00Speaker 4: many so many routs ticking run right and now nowadays
- 18:03Speaker 4: they're running more options off where our bodies are at.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Right, And it's the old like when you go to
- 18:09Speaker 1: run and shoot, the running shoot was based on wherever
- 18:12Speaker 1: our body was at. They're gonna run opposite of that
- 18:15Speaker 1: right right and get when you got the ke gun,
- 18:18Speaker 1: which is the buffalo bills, and then you got the
- 18:21Speaker 1: what's the other one called the uh the air raid
- 18:24Speaker 1: air raided like their flooding zones right right. So like
- 18:29Speaker 1: to understand, like the philosophy, how you're going to play
- 18:31Speaker 1: against those guys and playing against those having really good
- 18:35Speaker 1: coaches to help you understand the defenses, but then allow
- 18:38Speaker 1: you guys to make those certain calls inside of your defense.
- 18:41Speaker 1: That to me, that's when you're find really good. That's
- 18:43Speaker 1: why your defense was. Your defense was so good because
- 18:46Speaker 1: you have a lot of allowed to talk to each other,
- 18:49Speaker 1: make your checks, the major checks, and you go play ball.
- 18:52Speaker 2: And we would bastardize it too at times, like if
- 18:55Speaker 2: we got in a unique situation in the game, they
- 18:57Speaker 2: trusted us the coaches. Literally we would we would do
- 19:00Speaker 2: things on the fly and then talk about it in
- 19:01Speaker 2: the meeting the next day, and they'd be like, what
- 19:03Speaker 2: you guys do right here? It's like, coach, hey, you
- 19:05Speaker 2: wanted to get them covered. We knew that Gronk and
- 19:07Speaker 2: Edelman were gonna quick switch out of this nasty split.
- 19:10Speaker 2: They were stacked up on each other, and they when
- 19:14Speaker 2: they switched, we knew, hey, Cam, you want to be
- 19:16Speaker 2: on Gronk. I want to be on Edelman. We don't
- 19:17Speaker 2: want them to get the matchup they want. So when
- 19:19Speaker 2: when Edelman breaks out, I'm gonna take him. You take
- 19:22Speaker 2: Gronk up the middle, and we'll deal with it later.
- 19:24Speaker 2: We don't have a call for this. This isn't how
- 19:25Speaker 2: the defense is normally played. But they'll the coaches will look,
- 19:29Speaker 2: we both all pros right now. I think they'll they'll
- 19:31Speaker 2: live with our decision making right now.
- 19:33Speaker 1: No, see, I like that, and I like coaches. To me,
- 19:36Speaker 1: the great coaches in the league are the coaches that
- 19:39Speaker 1: allow you to be inside of inside of the system,
- 19:43Speaker 1: allow you to be you and make your calls. Because
- 19:45Speaker 1: we made I made some crazy calls. We made crazy calls,
- 19:51Speaker 1: but we knew this defense. We knew what we wanted
- 19:53Speaker 1: to do, we knew what we want to accomplish. We
- 19:55Speaker 1: knew what they were trying to do against us, and
- 19:58Speaker 1: our coaches love us do it.
- 20:00Speaker 3: And that's the beautiful part of defense.
- 20:03Speaker 2: You had seventy one picks, Like what what that's I mean,
- 20:07Speaker 2: it's still second all time, and nowadays nobody's getting that many.
- 20:11Speaker 2: I think I led the decade with thirty seven in
- 20:13Speaker 2: the regular season in four and so forty one. But
- 20:17Speaker 2: it's so much harder because they're letting the quarterbacks be
- 20:20Speaker 2: more comfortable, Like they're not knocked out, they're not concussed,
- 20:23Speaker 2: they're not worried about getting killed during the game. What
- 20:25Speaker 2: do you think was like your favorite interception? And then
- 20:28Speaker 2: what do you think helped you throughout? You know, just
- 20:31Speaker 2: to get that many of them?
- 20:32Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what I would do inside of uh,
- 20:35Speaker 1: inside of residential, I will play cover two sometimes the
- 20:38Speaker 1: eight yards off, but Tony will let me right right,
- 20:45Speaker 1: so I would play eight yards off. I would I
- 20:48Speaker 1: would press sometime and cover to bail, then stop at
- 20:52Speaker 1: three yards so they don't know if I'm if I
- 20:56Speaker 1: bai is he bailing? And He's always billing or is
- 20:58Speaker 1: he bailing and he's gonna stop? Is he billing because
- 21:00Speaker 1: he didn't covered too? Is a dude off at eight is?
- 21:02Speaker 1: And I would take like three steps at eight yards
- 21:05Speaker 1: and I'm like, if he runs a hitch or a slant,
- 21:08Speaker 1: see it, I'm gone. If they don't, then I'm just
- 21:12Speaker 1: gonna get in their way because I can't touch them
- 21:14Speaker 1: that far down the field, but I still can re
- 21:16Speaker 1: route them with my body so I can get in
- 21:18Speaker 1: the way of them. And still because we call it
- 21:20Speaker 1: up and outside, so up that that up and outside
- 21:22Speaker 1: and cover too, we would cover that all the way
- 21:25Speaker 1: that soft squats what we call it, we would call
- 21:29Speaker 1: I could take that up to like fifteen.
- 21:30Speaker 3: Yards fifteen ten to fifteen that one day, take it
- 21:33Speaker 3: up there.
- 21:33Speaker 1: So I mean I would do all kinds of crazy stuff.
- 21:36Speaker 1: I would play. I would, I would stay. I would
- 21:39Speaker 1: I wouldn't let the receiver and the quarterback see me
- 21:42Speaker 1: pressed or being off and say, oh, he's gonna do this,
- 21:46Speaker 1: and be like, none, you don't know what I'm gonna do,
- 21:48Speaker 1: Like I'm gonna something doing something something, I'm an quick
- 21:50Speaker 1: jaremy something? None, Somebody don't act like I'm gonna do it.
- 21:52Speaker 1: I'm gonna bail. Then I'm gonna stop again. And so
- 21:55Speaker 1: I had I try to make them think more. And
- 21:58Speaker 1: then I had in my head and I had four
- 22:01Speaker 1: formations in my head and okay, they're going these four
- 22:04Speaker 1: information as soon as they come out, I'm gonna look
- 22:07Speaker 1: at my safety and just no. And he's like, if
- 22:11Speaker 1: they'd run, they better not run that route. Like, if
- 22:15Speaker 1: they run that route there, it's over. I meany had
- 22:18Speaker 1: some teams that run the route, and I got them
- 22:21Speaker 1: and I remember Green Bay Brett Fire's first start. They
- 22:27Speaker 1: ran every every time stirring sharp was on the weak side,
- 22:32Speaker 1: back was off set far away from the tight end
- 22:37Speaker 1: offset far they would swing the back and he would
- 22:40Speaker 1: always run a curl curl, run a curl on the backside.
- 22:46Speaker 1: So I'm like, way, if they run, that is over.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Got me double moved tuxdown. Then I go back. I
- 22:55Speaker 1: think it was like four series later. I muffed a
- 22:57Speaker 1: punk and then they know. Normally, when when you know,
- 23:00Speaker 1: when you make a mistake, you try to recover. You
- 23:02Speaker 1: try to write next play slug o touchdown. Oh so
- 23:08Speaker 1: it's like so you know they can use that against you.
- 23:11Speaker 1: But the one thing I try to always do in
- 23:13Speaker 1: which I had Tony and the coaches that I had.
- 23:16Speaker 1: It just allowed me to show different things like we
- 23:20Speaker 1: would sometimes we would we would cloud reduce splits we
- 23:26Speaker 1: didn't have to. Sometimes we would cloud it. I'll become
- 23:29Speaker 1: the safety. The safety had come down and be the corner,
- 23:32Speaker 1: and they let they let us do it right, you know,
- 23:35Speaker 1: because they knew we were comfortable in making these calls.
- 23:37Speaker 1: And heck, listen, at the end of the day, even
- 23:39Speaker 1: though I was a kit corner, my safeties are bigger
- 23:41Speaker 1: than me, righta better you know, they were better track there,
- 23:45Speaker 1: so to speak, than I was, So why not put
- 23:48Speaker 1: him in cloud? If it's right?
- 23:49Speaker 2: I mean, you played for so many great defenses. I
- 23:53Speaker 2: mean that two thousand Ravens defense is still one of
- 23:57Speaker 2: the best defenses of all time, and they're always in
- 24:00Speaker 2: that conversation. We were having this debate online, you know,
- 24:03Speaker 2: the twenty fifteen Broncos defense and then the Legion of
- 24:07Speaker 2: Boomar twenty thirteen defense, like which one was better? And
- 24:10Speaker 2: obviously you know which one, I fail was better? But
- 24:13Speaker 2: I mean, you talk about that Ravens defense, there's no
- 24:16Speaker 2: conversation that doesn't include the eighty five Bears to two
- 24:19Speaker 2: thousand Ravens every single time. What made that defense so special,
- 24:24Speaker 2: you think.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Man's you know what? It was the growth that we
- 24:27Speaker 1: had over the first two years. Shurm Like I first
- 24:32Speaker 1: got there in ninety eight, and the first year we
- 24:36Speaker 1: were like six and ten or something. Crazy. Second year
- 24:41Speaker 1: coach retires, we get Brian Billy could come in. Martin
- 24:45Speaker 1: Lewis is the dec coordinator. Martin Lewis was in Pittsburgh
- 24:48Speaker 1: with us, right, So we're running the same defense that
- 24:51Speaker 1: we hused to run in Pittsburgh, but it was four
- 24:53Speaker 1: to three instead of a three to four, right, So
- 24:56Speaker 1: we had to do some some things kind of like
- 24:59Speaker 1: Bastard eyed some of the form some of the defenses
- 25:01Speaker 1: on the backside because of our our defensive end instead
- 25:04Speaker 1: of outside linebacker. We had to do that. But I
- 25:07Speaker 1: think what made us good is that Ray came into
- 25:11Speaker 1: his own Like Ray became he was making plays. He
- 25:15Speaker 1: was already a tackler, right, Like you know when I
- 25:18Speaker 1: first got there, Ray was, I think he was. He
- 25:21Speaker 1: loved the team and tackles every single year that his
- 25:24Speaker 1: first I think treat three years, and he kept getting
- 25:29Speaker 1: better inside of the game. Make did He started making
- 25:33Speaker 1: big plays in these big games. But I think what
- 25:37Speaker 1: really made us good is, to be honest, is that
- 25:40Speaker 1: we had leaders across the board. So we had leaders
- 25:43Speaker 1: up front. We had Sam Adams, Tony Share, Goosa, and
- 25:46Speaker 1: everybody knows Goose because Goose was so crazy and silly
- 25:48Speaker 1: and and he tall crazy. Everybody but Sam Adams. That
- 25:53Speaker 1: dude can get it. Sam Adams can get it. So
- 25:57Speaker 1: having a guy that's three thirty and another guy us
- 26:00Speaker 1: three fifty sitting there in the three technique and a
- 26:04Speaker 1: two technique, you couldn't move them, so you couldn't run
- 26:08Speaker 1: the ball against this. So defensively, as a defensive back,
- 26:12Speaker 1: you know do we had Chris McCallister and Duane Starks
- 26:16Speaker 1: at corners, and then the other safety was Corey and
- 26:19Speaker 1: Kim Harris, so you know, they would rotate back and forth.
- 26:23Speaker 1: But we didn't worry about the run game. Like if
- 26:28Speaker 1: I'm in the Corey, yeah, I'm a part of the
- 26:29Speaker 1: run game. But if I ain't part of the run game,
- 26:31Speaker 1: I don't need to come up because they nobody run
- 26:33Speaker 1: the ball against this, right, I mean sharing we had
- 26:36Speaker 1: five games we didn't score a touchdown on.
- 26:40Speaker 3: I saw it.
- 26:41Speaker 1: I saw it was a stretch too, and we won
- 26:43Speaker 1: three of I mean, so we could score on defense,
- 26:51Speaker 1: and we knew how good we were. Like I knew
- 26:56Speaker 1: when we played the New York Giants and Super Bowl, said, man,
- 27:00Speaker 1: you do can't be those man if they get across
- 27:02Speaker 1: the fifty yard line. So so the Giants beat Minnesota
- 27:07Speaker 1: Vikings to a really good that year, and they had
- 27:10Speaker 1: some ballers, Like I was a little nervous going as
- 27:13Speaker 1: Randy Chris Carter and Autumn dudes. I mean, they had
- 27:15Speaker 1: some players over there on the Minnesota Vikings offense. I
- 27:18Speaker 1: was a little nervous. Me and Ray were up there Monday.
- 27:23Speaker 1: So that that first week we're looking at tape a
- 27:27Speaker 1: half go by, We're looking at that Minnesota Giants game.
- 27:31Speaker 1: We're like, we looked at each other, said, man, if
- 27:34Speaker 1: they get across the fifty, we quit.
- 27:37Speaker 3: We ain't good.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Ain't we ain't good? And they got across the fifty
- 27:41Speaker 1: one time from a kid return. So we're like, we
- 27:46Speaker 1: just had confidence in who we were. I mean, like
- 27:48Speaker 1: you guys with the leading the boom, you guys had swag, right,
- 27:52Speaker 1: you knew you were good and you knew you're like
- 27:55Speaker 1: I mean, you guys are going to change courses of
- 27:58Speaker 1: games making Dick plays knock of people. I remember, man,
- 28:02Speaker 1: what was your safety was a strong safety? Cam Chancer, Yeah,
- 28:06Speaker 1: hit the tight end for the hit the tight end
- 28:09Speaker 1: from Sam Cisco by the goal line. Yeah, man, he
- 28:14Speaker 1: hit him. I felt it on TV. I was like, dall, dude,
- 28:20Speaker 1: he didn't want to go back Like if I'm him,
- 28:22Speaker 1: I don't want to go back.
- 28:23Speaker 2: In There were so many plays like that, and on
- 28:27Speaker 2: that play it was raining that day. I will never
- 28:29Speaker 2: forget because they they ran. We used to call it
- 28:32Speaker 2: like an RNX beater, so condensed X split. He goes
- 28:37Speaker 2: to run a pick route on the linebacker that's covering
- 28:40Speaker 2: the tight end, and the tight end wheels around and
- 28:42Speaker 2: runs the gop and so he took Crabtree. I'm covering
- 28:46Speaker 2: Crabtree and he picks off Malcolm Smith and then Vernon
- 28:49Speaker 2: goes up the sideline, but Cam read it quick. So
- 28:52Speaker 2: Cam's in middlefield safety, he's on he's on course, and
- 28:56Speaker 2: it was raining and I somehow saw the sweat getting
- 28:59Speaker 2: knocked off that man's face. Forget the rain, forget the
- 29:02Speaker 2: water from the rod. Saw the sweat getting knocked off
- 29:04Speaker 2: and it was a legal hit, but the riff through
- 29:06Speaker 2: the flag and I and I said, ref, I see
- 29:09Speaker 2: why you threw it. It was legal now, but I
- 29:11Speaker 2: see why you threw it. I mean I I was
- 29:13Speaker 2: ready to throw a flag and I was on his team.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Man, I mean that hit was one of the most
- 29:18Speaker 1: vicious hits I seen. I don't I don't think people
- 29:22Speaker 1: even thought about it too often. But man as a player,
- 29:25Speaker 1: when he hit him, I said, oh, bro, don't he ain't.
- 29:27Speaker 1: He don't want to play no more.
- 29:29Speaker 2: He don't want to play. We played him in the
- 29:30Speaker 2: NFC Championship game that year and he ran a crosser
- 29:33Speaker 2: and people talk about the way Cam hit uh uh
- 29:36Speaker 2: Demarius Thomas in a in a championship in the Super Bowl,
- 29:39Speaker 2: but he hit Vernon the same way. In the NFC Championship.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Vernon was running across or shallow cross and we ran
- 29:46Speaker 2: a robber and they picked off the man cover him
- 29:48Speaker 2: and he came down as the robber and he and
- 29:52Speaker 2: didn't even Vernon fumbled the ball.
- 29:54Speaker 3: Cam didn't even look at it.
- 29:55Speaker 2: He went to do it in celebration and we were like, hey,
- 29:59Speaker 2: Vernon not want to play, He don't want to be
- 30:01Speaker 2: out here with this man like and to what you said,
- 30:04Speaker 2: like that was the year Denver broke all those records
- 30:06Speaker 2: and Peyton had all those records.
- 30:08Speaker 3: And he's throwing the ball all over the yard.
- 30:09Speaker 2: And we watched the tape and what we saw was
- 30:13Speaker 2: they weren't running anything super complex. They were getting people tired,
- 30:17Speaker 2: and they were lining up fast. They were in a
- 30:18Speaker 2: hurry up, and guys couldn't get their calls, they couldn't
- 30:20Speaker 2: get the checks. And then they're running slap flat, they're
- 30:24Speaker 2: running curl flat, they're running uh drive basic like simple
- 30:28Speaker 2: stuff like hit seven. They're not running complicated offense. But
- 30:31Speaker 2: when you're not lined up and you're confused and you're tired,
- 30:34Speaker 2: fatigue will make cowards of us, all right, And so
- 30:38Speaker 2: we just ran gassers. We ran gassers from from the
- 30:42Speaker 2: beginning of that week, because you got two weeks. From
- 30:44Speaker 2: the beginning of that week all the way till we
- 30:47Speaker 2: got to New York for the Super Bowl, we were
- 30:48Speaker 2: running gas. We were like, hey, they're not running us
- 30:50Speaker 2: off this field. That's one thing you're not gonna do, y'all,
- 30:54Speaker 2: not running us off this field. Y' don't have to
- 30:55Speaker 2: beat us. And we run a super we rarely huddle anyway,
- 30:58Speaker 2: So it's not like y'all gonna catch us between We
- 31:00Speaker 2: rarely go to the huddle. We look, we running when
- 31:03Speaker 2: we running, and can y'all deal with it? Like y'all,
- 31:05Speaker 2: y'all not gonna be confused by what we're doing. Y'all,
- 31:07Speaker 2: We're not gonna be confused by what y'all doing.
- 31:08Speaker 3: Line it up.
- 31:09Speaker 2: And I remember they were on like a maybe a
- 31:12Speaker 2: twelve or thirteen play drive and Damarius and Eric Decker
- 31:16Speaker 2: tapped out of the game. And when I tell you, Rod,
- 31:19Speaker 2: I called them everything in the book. On their way
- 31:21Speaker 2: to the sideline, I said, y'all in the Super Bowl
- 31:24Speaker 2: and y'all tapping out like this, third down, y'all bringing
- 31:27Speaker 2: in these backups? Third down in the Super Bowl, and
- 31:30Speaker 2: y'all down like y'all not built to win this game.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Y'all not built to beat us. Y'all know, y'all know
- 31:34Speaker 2: where y'all shouldn't even be out here with us.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Oh see, that's what that's. I mean, that's that. But
- 31:40Speaker 1: that's and it's you know, people say, oh, that's arrogant,
- 31:44Speaker 1: but it's not, because it's a fine line between confidence
- 31:48Speaker 1: and arrogant, and I say, you walk that line like
- 31:52Speaker 1: the great teams always walked in it, like right, Like
- 31:56Speaker 1: I wasn't a real talker, but all my boys were,
- 31:59Speaker 1: and we all he backed it up though, Like when
- 32:01Speaker 1: I was in Pittsburgh, we had some we had some
- 32:02Speaker 1: freaking defenses. In Pittsburgh, we blitzed everybody, right, And then
- 32:06Speaker 1: when I got to Baltimore, we had that year in
- 32:08Speaker 1: Baltimore where we were like that was one of the
- 32:10Speaker 1: best defense arguably in the history.
- 32:12Speaker 3: Of in the history of the game. Right, So ten points.
- 32:15Speaker 1: A game, and we and we knew how good we were,
- 32:20Speaker 1: and we talked. I mean I didn't talk a whole bunch,
- 32:23Speaker 1: but all my boys talked, all of them, all of
- 32:27Speaker 1: them talk And I was like, see, hey, hey, y'all
- 32:29Speaker 1: feel that. I mean, if you thought, does that still
- 32:31Speaker 1: get you going? Nothing? Is it? And that's what fires
- 32:33Speaker 1: you up? Then go for right, you know? And then
- 32:37Speaker 1: and then the coaches let us do.
- 32:39Speaker 2: It because and I would say, our defense was a
- 32:44Speaker 2: bunch of quiet, like Cam didn't talk a lot, Earl
- 32:46Speaker 2: rarely talked. Bobby Wagner was on that team, like it
- 32:49Speaker 2: didn't really talk that much. I was probably the loudest,
- 32:52Speaker 2: but they were all like, hey, I'm with him now,
- 32:54Speaker 2: Like what I'm with what he said. So if that's
- 32:56Speaker 2: where y'all want to go with it, that's where we're going. Like,
- 32:58Speaker 2: I'm not shying away from what he said. I just
- 33:00Speaker 2: don't need to say it. But and Nty, I want
- 33:05Speaker 2: to talk about ninety five because that was a crazy
- 33:09Speaker 2: season for you. It was like you tore your acl,
- 33:15Speaker 2: rehabbed all throughout the season, and then came back in
- 33:19Speaker 2: the Super Bowl Like what was it nineteen weeks or
- 33:22Speaker 2: something like that.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Yeah, So, I mean it was the first game of
- 33:25Speaker 1: the season going against Barry. The crazy thing is, man,
- 33:29Speaker 1: I did some stupid stuff like I would. So we
- 33:32Speaker 1: played on the astral to old astro turf, right, and
- 33:36Speaker 1: normally when I played on the Asshrol turf, I would
- 33:39Speaker 1: I would break my shoes in my game, the shoes
- 33:42Speaker 1: I was gonna wear that week, I would wear them
- 33:44Speaker 1: throughout the week so they can like fit my feet.
- 33:47Speaker 1: I didn't do that that week. That's the first I
- 33:49Speaker 1: didn't do it. It was just stupid. So it was
- 33:51Speaker 1: overly hot first game of the year, Barry Sanders. You know,
- 33:56Speaker 1: I'm like this little dude right here, man like we
- 33:58Speaker 1: got everybody got to come into him because he everywhere.
- 34:02Speaker 1: So he breaks out on the right side. I plant
- 34:06Speaker 1: and man, my foot got stuck. I try to turn
- 34:09Speaker 1: and you known't. Normally, if like wear the shoes I
- 34:12Speaker 1: should have been at my foot would have turned with me.
- 34:14Speaker 1: That things It's great. I jumped up, felt the pop
- 34:18Speaker 1: good thing is mat I Bill Cower was cool as
- 34:21Speaker 1: all get out as a head coach because Bill back
- 34:25Speaker 1: then Sheran. If I would have went on ir, I
- 34:27Speaker 1: was done for the year. It wasn't coming out. And
- 34:31Speaker 1: so we met with the doc on Monday and Doc
- 34:34Speaker 1: said it's gonna be eight He said it's going to
- 34:41Speaker 1: be like eight to to ten weeks. I like, right,
- 34:48Speaker 1: so I'm counting, and he said it could be up
- 34:51Speaker 1: to three months, four months, could be up to six months.
- 34:54Speaker 1: But I'm I'm counting the shortest period of time, right.
- 34:56Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, it's September, October, November December. I can
- 35:00Speaker 1: get back, right. I was like, coach, just give me
- 35:04Speaker 1: a shot. And luckily Colonel Lake don't get a lot
- 35:07Speaker 1: of love. But Colonel o' lake played outside linebacker U. C.
- 35:12Speaker 1: L A And came in, played strong safety, played our dime,
- 35:17Speaker 1: played our nickel, moved the corner when I got hurt,
- 35:21Speaker 1: play balled out the whole year. Wow. I was blessed
- 35:25Speaker 1: that nobody else got hurt that year, because anybody else
- 35:28Speaker 1: got hurt in the secondary. He had to put me down,
- 35:32Speaker 1: you know, And so he gave me. He gave me
- 35:34Speaker 1: that green light. He left the light at the end
- 35:36Speaker 1: of the tunnel for me, and uh. I got to
- 35:39Speaker 1: play in the Super my first Super Bowl. We didn't win,
- 35:42Speaker 1: you know, because in three Super Bowls I played in
- 35:45Speaker 1: and my quarterbacks threw eight interceptions. So you don't win
- 35:49Speaker 1: a lot of Super Bowls that way, right, But I
- 35:52Speaker 1: at least got to play in it. And I still
- 35:57Speaker 1: give Bill all the love because he gave me that
- 35:59Speaker 1: opportunity to even try to come back, to motivate me
- 36:03Speaker 1: to come back. So you know, yeah, I heal fast normally,
- 36:09Speaker 1: but Bill gave me the opportunity to get out there.
- 36:11Speaker 1: I only play like eighteen plays in the game. In
- 36:15Speaker 1: the game then they weren't getting an eleven personnael a
- 36:17Speaker 1: whole bunch. I only went out there in sub package,
- 36:21Speaker 1: and that's the only time I got on the field, I.
- 36:23Speaker 2: Think, and just talking about that, like, how how different
- 36:26Speaker 2: do you think you'd be in today's game? You know
- 36:29Speaker 2: where they it's it's so much different. And I love
- 36:31Speaker 2: I love the old school, and I love all we
- 36:34Speaker 2: were talking about before we got on on screen, about
- 36:37Speaker 2: Mel Blant and Lester Hayes and Mike Kynes and just
- 36:40Speaker 2: the guys who really fundamentally changed this game, and yourself included.
- 36:45Speaker 2: But it's such a different game than you guys played
- 36:49Speaker 2: because of the way they protect the quarterback. Like not
- 36:52Speaker 2: to say they weren't protecting them back then, but back
- 36:54Speaker 2: then you might have a quarterback half concussed in that game,
- 36:57Speaker 2: might have been close lined two or three times in
- 36:59Speaker 2: this game, drive on his head. In today's game, boy,
- 37:02Speaker 2: they're kicking half the defense off the game if they
- 37:05Speaker 2: if they land on him wrong, you know. So I
- 37:07Speaker 2: just feel like their comfort level and that's why the
- 37:10Speaker 2: accuracy numbers are through the roof and passer ratings through
- 37:13Speaker 2: the roof, because they don't they're so so afraid to
- 37:17Speaker 2: make a mistake. They'd rather throw the ball out of
- 37:19Speaker 2: bounds fifteen times than throw an interception. You know, I
- 37:22Speaker 2: think back then quarterbacks are like, hey, whatever it takes
- 37:25Speaker 2: to win. We're gonna sling it around the yard and
- 37:27Speaker 2: try to get a win. Now they're like, hey, if
- 37:29Speaker 2: we don't win, cool, as long as I don't throw
- 37:31Speaker 2: five interceptions.
- 37:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I think a couple of things sharing
- 37:33Speaker 1: with that, Like, Okay, first of all, you know, we
- 37:37Speaker 1: sued the league to get free agency, So it started there, right,
- 37:41Speaker 1: So we sue the league free agency. And then the
- 37:43Speaker 1: league was being very dishonest about CTE concussions, right, so
- 37:49Speaker 1: they got a lossuit with that, And so where are
- 37:52Speaker 1: we at today is because of those two things. Right
- 37:55Speaker 1: when you or you sue your employer, it's going to
- 37:57Speaker 1: happen where they're going to openly protect themselves and capacity. Right,
- 38:01Speaker 1: So that's where the league is at because of the
- 38:04Speaker 1: you know, quarterbacks are protected in the pocket, I'm the pocket.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Receivers are protected over the mirror of field. They I mean,
- 38:09Speaker 1: they you gotta you gotta let them catch two feet
- 38:12Speaker 1: turn and then you can hit them. We heck, it's
- 38:14Speaker 1: two foot already caught the ball, so you know, so
- 38:17Speaker 1: that's one. Secondly, man, you know I knew you watch ball.
- 38:23Speaker 1: I mean, they're the fundamentals are gone. The fundamentals in
- 38:30Speaker 1: football across the board is gone. It's not the same
- 38:35Speaker 1: game that we played when you talked about you know,
- 38:41Speaker 1: like everybody plays with the buttet of the sideline, right,
- 38:44Speaker 1: but you could do it well, right and you and
- 38:47Speaker 1: you you knew you could do it. All these guys
- 38:50Speaker 1: can't do it right. There's no nobody back cuddles anymore.
- 38:54Speaker 1: So it's the the game is it has changed. It's
- 38:57Speaker 1: changed because we did have those lawsuits. But what makes
- 39:01Speaker 1: me more disappointed? And I'm glad the guys are making money.
- 39:05Speaker 1: And let me say that, I'm glad they're making money,
- 39:07Speaker 1: right that generational wealth they can give to their kids
- 39:10Speaker 1: and their hopefully their kids and their next generation. I'm
- 39:12Speaker 1: hoping they can keep doing that. But man, like where
- 39:17Speaker 1: is the professionalism in the game, Like where's the foundation
- 39:22Speaker 1: built at the position? Like I just don't see, Like
- 39:27Speaker 1: you see, did players come through and they might have
- 39:30Speaker 1: two or three good years, but they ain't gonna have eight, nine, ten.
- 39:36Speaker 1: They don't even want to play ten years anymore. Right
- 39:39Speaker 1: at eight in shoot, they got enough money for the
- 39:41Speaker 1: rest of their lives in the next couple of generations.
- 39:44Speaker 1: So you know, yeah, I think you're absolutely right, like
- 39:48Speaker 1: thinking about like where the game is at, it's a
- 39:50Speaker 1: little softer, and think about this. I don't know when
- 39:53Speaker 1: you first came in how many how long were you
- 39:55Speaker 1: in training camp?
- 39:58Speaker 3: Two weeks? Two and a half.
- 40:00Speaker 1: So when I first came in, when we was five
- 40:02Speaker 1: weeks right banging two days and I mean, we're you're
- 40:07Speaker 1: going through it. And then probably the end of my
- 40:10Speaker 1: career because I played seventeen. At the end of my career,
- 40:12Speaker 1: we were one on one off, one on one off.
- 40:15Speaker 1: We were probably about twenty days in the training camp.
- 40:20Speaker 1: So I mean, now is what sixteen days, seventeen days
- 40:22Speaker 1: of training camp? You got what? Uh they got how
- 40:25Speaker 1: many times they could put on shoulder pads with seventeen
- 40:27Speaker 1: or something.
- 40:28Speaker 3: Like thirteen seventeen during the season ending something like that.
- 40:31Speaker 1: So they don't really get there every hit and tackle,
- 40:35Speaker 1: but you still should be able to formed you used
- 40:39Speaker 1: we used to call it ThReD up, like like I'm
- 40:42Speaker 1: gonna be in my sweats. But if the running back
- 40:44Speaker 1: of out here he getting his shoulder right like he
- 40:47Speaker 1: gonna'm gonna protect yourself, he's still getting it and he
- 40:50Speaker 1: better cover that ball up because we're gonna be poking right, So.
- 40:54Speaker 2: I see that's that was the thing I think we
- 40:56Speaker 2: we we kept going is is we were hitting and
- 40:59Speaker 2: and we took so much pride as a defense because
- 41:02Speaker 2: we had so many great players. I would think there's
- 41:05Speaker 2: three or four Hall of Famers on that defense. I mean,
- 41:07Speaker 2: Bobby Wagner being being the most obvious one. But like
- 41:13Speaker 2: we would tell Pete, don't run ones versus ones because
- 41:16Speaker 2: we're not gonna let them move the ball.
- 41:18Speaker 3: We're hitting everything moving.
- 41:19Speaker 2: And if you want, that's why we lost so many
- 41:21Speaker 2: practices and all that and offseason, because he would he
- 41:24Speaker 2: would in OTAs you know how they say, hey, let
- 41:27Speaker 2: him catch the ball, And like, we not built like that, Pete,
- 41:30Speaker 2: were not letting nobody catch this ball. Were not let
- 41:32Speaker 2: And if you gonna show highlights and do all the
- 41:34Speaker 2: things you do and try to hype this offense up,
- 41:36Speaker 2: we're gonna break the next to dislodge this ball. So
- 41:39Speaker 2: if you want to avoid that, send us home, send us,
- 41:42Speaker 2: send a defense home, and then you guys can run
- 41:44Speaker 2: normal practices. But while you're out here doing it like
- 41:46Speaker 2: this and you're trying to show us up, you're gonna
- 41:49Speaker 2: get somebody hurt. And that's what would happened. We be
- 41:51Speaker 2: on that offseason and you got broken collar bones and
- 41:53Speaker 2: broken arms and broken this, and it's like.
- 41:56Speaker 1: You know what, Sharon, but you know, you know what
- 41:57Speaker 1: I hear from you though. You guys took leadership in
- 42:00Speaker 1: the locker room. M hmmm, because it's your team. Yeah,
- 42:05Speaker 1: I mean, right, Pete, they head coach, but it's your team.
- 42:10Speaker 1: M hm right, And that's how we felt like we felt. Yeah, listen,
- 42:15Speaker 1: Chuck Roe was a coach, you know, Bill Carr was
- 42:19Speaker 1: a coach. But it's our team. It's our We're gonna
- 42:22Speaker 1: practice away. We need to practice to win. And if
- 42:28Speaker 1: you don't like it, you know, Chuck would. Chuck was
- 42:32Speaker 1: old school, So Chuck was like, she, hey, guys, get hurt,
- 42:37Speaker 1: he gonna we're gonna go ten yards down the field
- 42:39Speaker 1: and huddle up. It's like, if you know then Bill
- 42:44Speaker 1: was kind of the same way, because Bill's that you know,
- 42:47Speaker 1: most defensive coaches are kind of old schoolish and it's
- 42:51Speaker 1: some type of mindset, right, So Bill was kind of
- 42:53Speaker 1: like that. But once you go to the OTA one
- 42:57Speaker 1: and O T A two's and O T A three's,
- 43:00Speaker 1: I mean, you know, it puts you in a different
- 43:03Speaker 1: mindset because you're always in the building. Because you know,
- 43:06Speaker 1: when I first came in, it wasn't no. I mean,
- 43:08Speaker 1: we had a whole bunch of our all seasons. I
- 43:10Speaker 1: did on my own workouts. OTAs every everybody's in the
- 43:14Speaker 1: building every single day. They're working out, they're doing the
- 43:16Speaker 1: little things. So it is a different game. But the
- 43:20Speaker 1: what I what I like about you, You remind me
- 43:23Speaker 1: like we could have played together. And I can say
- 43:26Speaker 1: that I don't say that lightly, like when I like,
- 43:30Speaker 1: you got to be a baller to be able to
- 43:32Speaker 1: play on that Steeler team or the Railers team, you
- 43:35Speaker 1: gotta have that. You gotta have that mindset, just like
- 43:37Speaker 1: yours your leading a boom. You got to have a
- 43:39Speaker 1: certain mindset to put to be a legion of boom.
- 43:42Speaker 1: You can't come in there soft mind it. You'll run
- 43:44Speaker 1: them out. You'll run them out the field like mak
- 43:46Speaker 1: it ain't no, you ain't the part of the legion
- 43:49Speaker 1: of boom.
- 43:49Speaker 3: Wen right, you ain't built like that.
- 43:51Speaker 5: No.
- 43:52Speaker 1: So I mean, so that's what I like about your
- 43:55Speaker 1: your teams because we were so much alike. And when
- 43:58Speaker 1: you start going from the different generations, every good defense
- 44:04Speaker 1: all thought alike. The mail blunt and he talked about
- 44:08Speaker 1: the steel curtain. You talk to me and Joe Green
- 44:10Speaker 1: could me. Joe Green was our defense line coach when
- 44:12Speaker 1: I was there. That dude wouldn't mean. He's like, we
- 44:17Speaker 1: should watch the eight milimeter film when I first came
- 44:19Speaker 1: in the league, and if the defensive line did something wrong, though,
- 44:24Speaker 1: he would throw that projector against the wall and you
- 44:27Speaker 1: could hear it, like, because you know Tony Quiet, Tony
- 44:30Speaker 1: his room is right next to the line room. Tony
- 44:33Speaker 1: he talking to us, but he ain't yelling Josh Joe.
- 44:37Speaker 1: You can hear man. It felt like like AC units
- 44:40Speaker 1: were hitting walls. I ask, this dude is grave, I
- 44:45Speaker 1: said that. And if he was any as a coach,
- 44:48Speaker 1: he was like that. I said. As a player, I
- 44:50Speaker 1: couldn't even imagine planning against the dude. And but being
- 44:54Speaker 1: in the locker room with him being a locker, he's
- 44:56Speaker 1: gona hold everybody countible. So I think all the great
- 44:58Speaker 1: defenses over the general all have certain a certain trade,
- 45:02Speaker 1: and that one trade is, hey, we about that business,
- 45:06Speaker 1: mm hmm.
- 45:08Speaker 2: And it's a standard, and it's a standard you live
- 45:10Speaker 2: up to every day. And I think that's the whenever
- 45:14Speaker 2: I talk to people, and I talk to young guys,
- 45:16Speaker 2: and people want to be great defenses. I say, like,
- 45:19Speaker 2: there's an accountability that has to be there, that's inherent.
- 45:23Speaker 2: That there's no disrespect, that you got to disrespect anybody
- 45:28Speaker 2: or any anything like that. There's always love in it.
- 45:30Speaker 2: It's always hey, we have the same goal in mind.
- 45:33Speaker 2: So when you're holding each other accountable, it ain't no MFIs.
- 45:36Speaker 2: And you want because these grown men you're dealing with,
- 45:39Speaker 2: you know you can't play like that and expect to
- 45:40Speaker 2: get a good result. But men that desire the same
- 45:44Speaker 2: thing and hold the same standard can accept accountability and
- 45:47Speaker 2: coaching from one another. They can accept, hey, I need
- 45:50Speaker 2: better from you right there in order for us to
- 45:52Speaker 2: get to where we're getting. You don't have to be
- 45:54Speaker 2: like hey, what are you doing on that play? It's like, hey,
- 45:56Speaker 2: you just got to look at him like come on, now,
- 45:57Speaker 2: you know we Hey we better than that. Huh, come
- 46:00Speaker 2: on we at next play. I can't wait to see
- 46:01Speaker 2: you on this next play because they got you messed
- 46:04Speaker 2: up if they think that's about to happen again, Like,
- 46:05Speaker 2: I know you better than that, right, And I think
- 46:08Speaker 2: the standard that we held ourselves to every day. And
- 46:10Speaker 2: I'll give Earl Thomas a lot of credit for his
- 46:13Speaker 2: practice habits because he practiced like his hair was on
- 46:16Speaker 2: fire every day. And so when you see that and
- 46:19Speaker 2: it's jumping off on tape, you have to match it.
- 46:21Speaker 2: There's no like, hey man, look at him. He's doing
- 46:24Speaker 2: a great job. I hope he plays like this that
- 46:26Speaker 2: game day. It's like, no, I'm like that too, Like
- 46:28Speaker 2: I'm there too, and I'm i'm I'm at the ball
- 46:30Speaker 2: and we're punching at it, we're smacking at it. If
- 46:32Speaker 2: he gets interception, I need to get too, like we're
- 46:35Speaker 2: and we're competing in that way within the scheme, within
- 46:38Speaker 2: the confines of winning football. And when you do that,
- 46:42Speaker 2: it just makes for a beautiful product. And I appreciate
- 46:44Speaker 2: it being able to play with those guys and having
- 46:47Speaker 2: like minded people. And I'm sure you feel the same
- 46:49Speaker 2: way with everybody in your building and the defenses you
- 46:52Speaker 2: played on. When when guys are tied in going the
- 46:55Speaker 2: same way, it's a it's a tough thing to stop.
- 46:58Speaker 1: It is and not got Like I said, I think
- 47:01Speaker 1: there's so many different traits that carryed from generations, from
- 47:05Speaker 1: every defense that when you start talking about these good defenses.
- 47:08Speaker 1: Everybody had the same mentality, the same mindset. But the
- 47:12Speaker 1: one key is you policed yourself. I didn't need my
- 47:16Speaker 1: coach to tell me, right, I police myself, and we
- 47:20Speaker 1: police each other like we'd be like, hey, I mean,
- 47:22Speaker 1: it's like, sometimes you get in arguments with each other.
- 47:26Speaker 1: That's what families do to right, family. Hey, sometimes you
- 47:28Speaker 1: get on each other, but you love each other at
- 47:31Speaker 1: the end of the day. And that's what That's what
- 47:33Speaker 1: I've always seemed to learn from listening to the you know,
- 47:39Speaker 1: the purfle people eaters, the Orange Crush, the Steel Curtain.
- 47:43Speaker 1: You know, I guess we've I guess we're called the
- 47:46Speaker 1: Bullies of Baltimore, right, you know, leads in a boom,
- 47:50Speaker 1: All those good, great defenses over the course of time,
- 47:54Speaker 1: all have a certain trait. And that one trade is
- 47:58Speaker 1: every time we come to work and we crossed ourn
- 48:00Speaker 1: white line, it's about work. We're gonna play like we're
- 48:04Speaker 1: gonna practice this, like we want to play on a
- 48:07Speaker 1: consistent basis. And that's what I mean. That's the reason
- 48:11Speaker 1: I love wing you guys play, because man, you guys
- 48:14Speaker 1: brought the wood you brought. I mean, it was watching
- 48:16Speaker 1: you guys play was like a reminded me of our teams.
- 48:22Speaker 1: And when I when I give love to other defenses,
- 48:27Speaker 1: it's not no, it's not tongue and cheap. It's like
- 48:30Speaker 1: true respect it because you don't see it that often.
- 48:33Speaker 1: It comes from right once in every ten or so years,
- 48:37Speaker 1: those type of defenses and in the different different generations.
- 48:41Speaker 1: But man, the way you guys played man, it was
- 48:44Speaker 1: fun to watch some dudes. Man.
- 48:46Speaker 3: No, I appreciate that. I appreciate that, and that's why
- 48:49Speaker 3: I get.
- 48:49Speaker 2: I get so frustrated with this man versus zone debate
- 48:52Speaker 2: with people where they're like.
- 48:53Speaker 3: Oh, this corner played all man, he was better.
- 48:56Speaker 2: It's like, first off, not anybody in the league that's
- 48:59Speaker 2: playing straight man in this day and age. It's not
- 49:01Speaker 2: nobody because and it's not because they can't. It's because
- 49:04Speaker 2: the rest of the defense can. Like there may be
- 49:08Speaker 2: individual corners that can play man ninety percent of the
- 49:10Speaker 2: time and be fine, but can your linebackers play man
- 49:13Speaker 2: all time? Can the safeties play man all the time?
- 49:16Speaker 2: Because if they can't, then that's not good defense. And
- 49:18Speaker 2: nobody's gonna put them in those positions to figure it out.
- 49:21Speaker 2: And so you know, that's one of the frustrating things
- 49:23Speaker 2: because they'd be like, oh, you were one of the
- 49:25Speaker 2: best zone corners, Like no, I was just one of
- 49:26Speaker 2: the best corners, like I played at all. I played
- 49:28Speaker 2: whatever they called on the play, and I made it work.
- 49:31Speaker 2: And I wanted to hear your thoughts on that.
- 49:34Speaker 1: I think because remember when we first started talking, you said,
- 49:38Speaker 1: let's I'm three and cover three. If I'm the x dB,
- 49:44Speaker 1: I'm playing, I'm on the X side. Right, I'm playing man.
- 49:48Speaker 1: It's been a man. I'm up and outside I'm man.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Now he runs y'allocross. I ain't chasing him, right, I'm
- 49:54Speaker 1: crawling across, but he's gonna be reducedblit to be gonna
- 49:58Speaker 1: run yall across working, or he's going to be you know, Honi,
- 50:03Speaker 1: that's the only way you can get to it. So
- 50:05Speaker 1: to me, you know, having those arguments about zone call,
- 50:10Speaker 1: like you know, when people say zone, I said, listen,
- 50:14Speaker 1: great defensive backs can do it all. I could plays
- 50:19Speaker 1: a flight. I didn't play man. I played man zone.
- 50:24Speaker 1: I did it my way. The great players can do both,
- 50:29Speaker 1: and the great defense can do both. It's hard to
- 50:31Speaker 1: just just say okay, we're all zoned, Well, you're gonna
- 50:35Speaker 1: be all cover two and just play cover two all day.
- 50:40Speaker 1: You can't do that. So I don't think people when
- 50:43Speaker 1: people make that statement, I don't think they understand football
- 50:46Speaker 1: because the thing there's versions even though you're inside of
- 50:50Speaker 1: Even though you might it might be a zone call,
- 50:54Speaker 1: you got a concept of man somewhere on that zone
- 50:57Speaker 1: call unless it's a condensed split. If it's condensed lip,
- 51:00Speaker 1: then we're probably playing the true zone, right because where
- 51:02Speaker 1: we're backing up a little bit, we're gonna let everything
- 51:04Speaker 1: that like unfold and then we're gonna match it right right.
- 51:08Speaker 1: That's that's Other than that, there's always a version of
- 51:12Speaker 1: of playing the zone, of playing man inside of each
- 51:15Speaker 1: one of their defense, each defense. So you know, saying
- 51:20Speaker 1: what that is. What I'm a fan of is ballers.
- 51:24Speaker 1: Can you can you play ball? Can you play deep?
- 51:28Speaker 1: Can you make play? And what I really like is
- 51:30Speaker 1: like making plays on the ball, Like when the ball
- 51:32Speaker 1: goes up, that's my ball and thing to receive a ball,
- 51:35Speaker 1: that's my My mindset was always like that interception, first
- 51:40Speaker 1: PBu second tackle if he catch it. That's how I
- 51:45Speaker 1: thought me too, right, like in the Great to Me
- 51:49Speaker 1: when you talk to the great deep mel Blunt. That
- 51:54Speaker 1: was the same way, Lim Barney, the same way, Dick Lebo,
- 51:58Speaker 1: the same way. All the great defensive backs have that
- 52:01Speaker 1: mindset where that's all mine, man, when it goes into it.
- 52:04Speaker 1: I got the same right to the ball as a receiver.
- 52:08Speaker 1: I can't climb on his back and all that stuff,
- 52:10Speaker 1: I get it, but I still got the same right.
- 52:13Speaker 1: So what we used to teach was, Hey, Tony used
- 52:17Speaker 1: to teach us, if if you make contact with the
- 52:19Speaker 1: receiver the same time the ball get there, that is
- 52:21Speaker 1: not passing appearance. And I was like, really, So we
- 52:25Speaker 1: used to do a drill on the big dump tackling
- 52:28Speaker 1: dummy where he throws the ball right on the side
- 52:31Speaker 1: edge and we used to come up with our shoulder
- 52:34Speaker 1: pad and going through the ball right and so because
- 52:38Speaker 1: it gets used to the contact because normally DB's drop
- 52:41Speaker 1: the ball when they're making contact with the receiver and
- 52:43Speaker 1: trying to catch the ball at the same time. We
- 52:46Speaker 1: used to do that drill over and over and over.
- 52:49Speaker 3: We did too. You did the drill.
- 52:51Speaker 1: I don't ever see anybody do that drill anymore.
- 52:56Speaker 2: Yeah, Chris christ Shard had us do it all the time,
- 52:58Speaker 2: and it would it would be the point of contact
- 53:00Speaker 2: drill or point of whatever, the point of contact whatever
- 53:05Speaker 2: they called it, point of attack. And either you go
- 53:08Speaker 2: for the PBu or you go for the pick, depending
- 53:10Speaker 2: on the time you make it.
- 53:12Speaker 3: But go for the pick until you can't.
- 53:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean see that to me is that's how
- 53:19Speaker 1: you get good. Really, dbs who can make the contact
- 53:23Speaker 1: still get interceptions. Most dds get PBUs And may be
- 53:28Speaker 1: talking about people and listen, I love people run. I say,
- 53:30Speaker 1: game changers get picks, right, like when the ball touched
- 53:36Speaker 1: your hand, you got to pick.
- 53:40Speaker 2: So in today's game, what dB has you like? Has
- 53:44Speaker 2: you enthralled and infatuated with his game and how he's
- 53:47Speaker 2: playing a position with the way you think about it.
- 53:50Speaker 1: I like, I'm a stall likes your ten like I
- 53:54Speaker 1: mean long, can run, can make plays.
- 53:58Speaker 3: I means to like.
- 54:00Speaker 1: Wooland you know, with Seattle, I like Gonzales, I like Mitchell,
- 54:05Speaker 1: I like sting Lee, Donn Houston. There's a lot of
- 54:09Speaker 1: players that I individually like, but the defense like Mike,
- 54:17Speaker 1: Mike brought that like that dog to back to Seattle.
- 54:22Speaker 3: Mm hmm.
- 54:23Speaker 1: But watching Houston Texan defense like them dudes, them dudes
- 54:28Speaker 1: remind me of you guys because they was knocking cats out.
- 54:33Speaker 1: I was like, man, this is this is leading to
- 54:35Speaker 1: boom two point oh because they hitting everybody moving mm hmm.
- 54:39Speaker 1: I mean, And so I mean I like watching those
- 54:42Speaker 1: type of games where defenses are flying to the ball
- 54:46Speaker 1: and laying cats out and if they get the flag,
- 54:48Speaker 1: they get a flag. Like, so it ain't gon too,
- 54:50Speaker 1: that's not going to need tour me that I'm gonna
- 54:52Speaker 1: play fast, you know. But so I've got a group
- 54:55Speaker 1: of players that I really like to watch, but I
- 54:58Speaker 1: really like to watch complete defenses, like just male offenses,
- 55:03Speaker 1: because it's a little harder to do in the day's
- 55:06Speaker 1: game because everybody is overly protected on offense, right, So
- 55:10Speaker 1: it's harder for the dbs to do that. And then
- 55:13Speaker 1: they just got to figure out how the rest are
- 55:16Speaker 1: calling the game that day and how they're gonna play
- 55:18Speaker 1: inside of the game.
- 55:20Speaker 2: Right, And that's that's the hard part because it's so
- 55:22Speaker 2: subjective in this this day and age. But if you
- 55:25Speaker 2: were building a perfect modern day dB, what are three
- 55:28Speaker 2: traits that are non negotiable?
- 55:31Speaker 5: Ooh, My three traits are non negotiable toughness mm hmmm. Uh,
- 55:44Speaker 5: I guess grid is kind of like toughness.
- 55:47Speaker 6: So so toughness, uh my negotiable toughness short, I cants.
- 56:00Speaker 1: Uh, shoot, that's a great question.
- 56:06Speaker 3: You can you can encompass anything.
- 56:07Speaker 2: You can encompassate a football IQ, ball skills, speed, athleticism.
- 56:13Speaker 1: So the toughness the football not playing in a box
- 56:22Speaker 1: like if if that makes sense. I know it's not
- 56:24Speaker 1: a it's not a one word or one trait, but
- 56:27Speaker 1: a lot of times we live in this box and
- 56:30Speaker 1: the defense tells us this is x y Z, this
- 56:34Speaker 1: is you know, you got your one third corner, you
- 56:38Speaker 1: got two to one to two to displays, blah blah
- 56:40Speaker 1: blah blah blah blah blah blah. And we live in that, right,
- 56:44Speaker 1: the great ones don't live in there. You're right, right,
- 56:47Speaker 1: And so you try to find those guys who understand football.
- 56:52Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, football is a
- 56:54Speaker 1: simple game. It's not easy to play at a high
- 56:57Speaker 1: level on a consistent basis. Right if you go back
- 57:01Speaker 1: to and I'm answer, I'll get you. I'll give you
- 57:04Speaker 1: the third treatment once I make a statement. But go
- 57:07Speaker 1: back to Pop Warner when we play plot born in football,
- 57:11Speaker 1: the football goes to the right side. Every players over
- 57:15Speaker 1: on the right side with the ball. And as we grow,
- 57:19Speaker 1: especially defensively, you're gonna your coaches are gonna say, I
- 57:23Speaker 1: need you in the middle of the field or your
- 57:25Speaker 1: defensive end. You can't bowld early, you can't do this,
- 57:28Speaker 1: you can't do that. I need you here, I need
- 57:31Speaker 1: you there, I need this. And we get some the
- 57:35Speaker 1: most of the players, ninety of those players are gonna
- 57:38Speaker 1: get locked in and saying if I have to do
- 57:40Speaker 1: this because my coach is telling me to do this,
- 57:43Speaker 1: mm hmm. But the real good ones, sir, got a
- 57:47Speaker 1: filter in their head. I remember, I remember Rob Russ
- 57:51Speaker 1: guy told me, he said, hey, listen, coaches are going
- 57:53Speaker 1: to say a lot of different things to you. Listen
- 57:57Speaker 1: to them, look out mile at him, and in your
- 58:02Speaker 1: head if you want to say shut the half up,
- 58:04Speaker 1: say it in your head, but don't say it to
- 58:06Speaker 1: the couch. And he said, but always smile at him.
- 58:09Speaker 1: So anytime I don't you say something that I really
- 58:13Speaker 1: didn't agree with, I'd be like, yeah, I got you
- 58:17Speaker 1: in my head. I'm like after that, like I'm going
- 58:19Speaker 1: out do ball. So to me is like, try to
- 58:23Speaker 1: find that guy that that can play outside the box
- 58:26Speaker 1: and make plays for you. That's just that's that's one
- 58:28Speaker 1: of the things you're always looking for. And then I
- 58:30Speaker 1: think thirdly, ball skills, because the balls matter. I mean,
- 58:35Speaker 1: getting the football for your team matters. So pbu's are great,
- 58:42Speaker 1: But man, getting interceptions changes the dynamic of football game
- 58:45Speaker 1: because it can if you don't score, it shortens the
- 58:48Speaker 1: field for your offense with the probabilities of them scoring increases.
- 58:53Speaker 2: Right, And and that's the part I think that's going
- 58:55Speaker 2: away from playing dB in the league at least corner
- 58:57Speaker 2: like they're not taking a ball away at the level
- 58:59Speaker 2: that he used to be taken away.
- 59:01Speaker 1: Would they take bad angles? I mean, it's if you
- 59:04Speaker 1: really watch it. If I'm really being honest, when I'm
- 59:06Speaker 1: watching games weekend and week out, because you know, I
- 59:09Speaker 1: call the game for the Ravenas and I'm watching the games,
- 59:12Speaker 1: I really get frustrated of guys not knowing how to play,
- 59:17Speaker 1: Like don't you see your angle? Do you not see
- 59:19Speaker 1: where you're at? Do you not know like your split rules?
- 59:23Speaker 1: Do you not like you don't see that? And then
- 59:27Speaker 1: in their heads and then obviously they don't because they
- 59:29Speaker 1: do it over and over and over. But the problem
- 59:31Speaker 1: is sharing. If you think about it, there's a lot
- 59:34Speaker 1: of young coaches out there, not saying that they're bad coaches, right,
- 59:38Speaker 1: I'm staying that they're still good. But I learned from
- 59:42Speaker 1: all my ogs. They are older coaches that been through
- 59:46Speaker 1: the riggers, that' been through it, and they taught me
- 59:48Speaker 1: all the nuggets that they learned over the course of
- 59:51Speaker 1: their time frame, like being a human being. They a
- 59:54Speaker 1: thirty year old rod and a sixty yeard ride. I'm
- 59:58Speaker 1: way wiser at sixty than I was at thirty. Right,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: That's what we get. And I think that's what happens
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: in foot that's what's happening in football because we've gone
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: so young in coaches, but we're young in the lead too, right,
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: So you know, starters or if you're a first rounder
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: or second rounder, I mean you're starting, you're playing, you're
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: getting a lot of reps and heck, I know. I
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: mean when I came in the league, man, I was
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: I was getting bonded over bag Dad. I mean, I
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: was getting.
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: Got you can't you can't learning.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: I was learning, but I was still getting God. And
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: it took me a little while. The kid going I
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: mean if if if I was into the league today,
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: they'd be like, oh I do is a bust exact
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: part he's a bus because we don't give these kids,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: like I always say, you got to give them three years.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: The third year should be the year you should see
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: glimpses and flashes the first two. That third year should
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: be that and some some guys you can see it
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: in the second year, right, I think you should. We
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: should give kids at least three years to like try
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: to get through this whole thing and to learn the game.
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: But also hopefully the coaches learn more and they can
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: give it to the players. You know. You know my
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: biggest thing with the really good players of that man
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: just don't live in the box.
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: Bro.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: Like when you talk to Troy Palamonlo, you talk to
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: every they didn't live in no box. They didn't live
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: a no box. I remember, I was like we were
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: playing Sea or were playing the Raiders. When I was
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: with the Ravens, we covered three. Tim Brown is a
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: shallow cross, and now I'm covered three. Now I don'tuposed
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: to take the shallow cross. Ridge gannon like this though.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: I took off and by the time I got to
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: the other side of the numbers. He hit me in
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: the chest with the ball touchdown. It was like a
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: twenty yard touchdown. I come to the sideline and Marven's like,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: you can't jump down. I said, coach, you was looking
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: at Aim. They was looking at em like, hey, so
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: you know to me getting those players who still know
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: how to play and are willing to play inside of
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: their system, those are the guys. Are those generational players,
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: like players like you who can make plays, like the
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: leading a Boombo, guys who play with you, who can
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: make plays. Those are the type of players you're trying
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: to find, and they're hard to find.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: Yeah, they're really hard to find because that's a sensitive
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: balance because like like that's why people don't understand.
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: They're like, you guys are just playing Cover three.
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: It was it's like you don't understand how many times
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: we broke that to create interceptions, like, hey, it's cover three,
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: but hey two and three are vertical. It's three by
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: one twos vertical. The over route took the safety, the
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: safety bent on that twos wide open. I leave one
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: wide open to go pick the seam of two. Not
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: because that's the way it's written. Because the way it's
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: written the safety probably should have been leaning there and
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: then you know, force the ball somewhere else. But that's
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: not how it always happens on the field. And to
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: be able to see it and react to it in
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: real time and correct the mistake and create a turnover
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: and a position where it would have usually been a
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: touchdown because of mistakes, that's what difference makers do. And
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: I want to ask you about something else before I
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: because I want to take your whole day up. What
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: do you think of this whole Max Crosby thing, like
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: he was a Baltimore raven for like five seconds.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: Now, Tree, I mean, I did a podcast talk about
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: what the Ravens got, you know, uh, and how good
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: he can be with the Ravens if nony mad A
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: BK comes back. I'm like that. I was blown away
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: because I didn't see the news and then I got
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: a text from one of my dudes in like Max
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: felt the physical I like, right, I'm like, I was like, well,
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: that's crazy. I mean, it's just, I mean, very unfortunate
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: for the Ravens and for Max, because I think Max
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: wanted to have a kind of refreshing moment to go
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: somewhere where else and played football, so that that's you know,
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: I know, it's frustrating for him. Unfortunately, hopefully he finds
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: he gets healthy again, whatever it might have been, whatever
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: his body's going through, he gets healthy again. Just unfortunate
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: that the Ravens didn't get him, because if the Ravens
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: would have got him, and I don't know where Nominde
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: Metabk's at with his recovery from with his neck injury,
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: and if he came back, oh man, that defense would
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: have been crazy.
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: Did you did you hear what happened?
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: No?
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: They picked up Trey Hendrickson.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: Oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah, So I saw trade.
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: I saw trade, so so trade and had He's had
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: ten more secks than Max over since twenty nineteen, so
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: I think that's but they had to keep those picks.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: That was when they lost Lennenbaum and they lost Likely
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: and they lost all these people. I think that's what
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: what cost him. I think they they had a They
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: could have went either way with Max Crosby. I mean,
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: they knew what he was, they knew where he was
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: and his recovery coming back regardless, like they had already
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: talked to Elatrosh. You didn't need to bring him in
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: to see. But I think once free agency started to
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: go and they started to see that, hey, Trey Hendrickson's
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: market is going to be what it is and we
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: could potentially get him and then keep our picks.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: Oh you think they you think they were that they sung?
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: That's what people are saying.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: Who you know? Because this is what I said. This
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: is what I said when I thought the deal was
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: going through. What they're gonna get Max? Because I said,
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: the only way it makes sense to get Max if
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: non no Metabiki is coming back, but Anami's not coming back.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: You need a dtackle, You're gonna need a center. You're
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: gonna need another tight end, you need another receiver, right,
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: You're gonna need you. I mean the interior defensive front
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: rushing wise, rush wise was lacking last year. So I
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: was a little surprised about that.
- 1:05:56Speaker 7: Unfortunate, but I that's a that's an interest way of
- 1:06:00Speaker 7: looking at it, though, Like if they if they saw
- 1:06:03Speaker 7: how it was unfolding, because my thing is giving up.
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: Those pigs because you need them, you need them, You
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: need those pigs. The only way you give them up
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: is that Nomi is coming back. But if nomb wasn't
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: or he's still question mark. You still need you still
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: need office alignment, right, I mean Lennon Baum, he was
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: the anchor of the center outside there. I mean Ronnie Stanley,
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: I get that. But you know, Lennon Malm was a
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: baller likely Lee's, you know. So I mean it's it
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: would be that's that's an interesting take because I saw
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: that in but I never thought about it like that.
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's the way it's being perceiving. That's the
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: where my brain is seeing it is saying, hey, we
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: could get him, we could get a comparable player. I
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: think they think Trey Henderson, a guy who's been in
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: their division, who has been very productive and great player,
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: comparable to Max Crosby. You can, you know, argue with
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: somebody else about who's more valuable. But I think it's
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: it's close enough that they say, hey, we keep multiple
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: first round picks that we can use to strengthen our
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: team and get the same player without losing the picks.
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: Like that, that's a that's a home run. And all
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: we got to do is is have a little bit
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: of a black eye in the public for a second,
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: like we gotta we gotta deal with a little bit
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: of turmoil that hey, we backed out of a deal
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: and and our word isn't as good as it used
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: to be.
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I was.
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: I was shocked that this Ravens were going to give
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: up two picks because it's not what they do, right,
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: That's not who they are. So I was shocked about that.
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: Then I was like, Okay, Crosby, I get it. Dudes,
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: a baller, he got that dog inning. He can be
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: a closer because if you look at the last several years,
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: they've lost a lot of games in the fourth quarter
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: where they didn't make plays for him. So I kind
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: of get it. But if Nambi's not coming back now,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: that's a head scratcher move for me. But I kind
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: of like what you're saying. If they saw how everything
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: was unfolding in the free agency market and Trey, yes,
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: Trey's inside of the inside the division already, they knows
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: what they're getting because the one thing that lacked from
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: the Ravens last year was past rush consistently right right,
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: I mean didn't have it consistently. Now they got Green,
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: Mike Green, who I think is going to be really
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: good player. But then if you bring you bring Henderson in,
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: and I was thinking, like, you bring Crosby in, you
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: got nom Day, you got another couple of young guys
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: on the other side, even van Ney. Then you got
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: some players and you're deepens followed again, right, But I
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: like that. I like that. But then you know one
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: thing I liked at the end of the day. They
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: keep their picks.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: They keep their picking and they and they need them
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: this year and they need them to actually competitive. All right, Well,
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: I appreciate you, Rod. This meant a lot to me, man,
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: this was a great conversation. I've been looking forward to
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: this for a long time. I appreciate you joining me.
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: I don't want to take up the rest of your day.
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: I think we could talk to five hours about fo I.

- 1:09:16Speaker 2: because I love to do it. We can talk ball
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: over day. I want to do this again.
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: The one thing I tell my you know, and I
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: tell my wife for all the time I said, I
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: know a little bit about a lot, but I know
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: a lot about football.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: I know a lot you and you're a brilliant football
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: mind and I love to hear your thoughts about it.
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: So we got to do this again, no question about that.
