Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_02]: Stuck is not a personality trait.
- 0:02[SPEAKER_02]: It is not something that represents who you are.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_02]: You're not a stuck person But it is a moment of misalignment and it does mean that we have to get in there like a mechanic what to see like what is the actual problem?
- 0:14[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the be it till you see it podcast, where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_01]: I'm also Logan, Ply's instructor and fitness business coach.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_01]: I've trained thousands of people around the world, and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_01]: My friends, action brings clarity.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_01]: And it's the antidote to fear.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_01]: Each week my guests will bring bold, executable, intrinsic, and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and be it till you see it.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's a practice, not a perfect, let's get started.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_02]: All right, be it babe.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_02]: As promised, we have a series on what to do when we're stuck.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_02]: I kind of be it till we see it when we are feeling stuck.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_02]: And I guess I guess it's to be like, are we saying this like, I feel stuck right now?
- 1:09[SPEAKER_02]: Or like you have ideas and you have goals that you're just not taking action steps.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_02]: Like, so to get into the stuckness, we have to kind of just talk about like, what is being stuck, right?
- 1:20[SPEAKER_02]: And how often are we calling this out on ourselves?
- 1:21[SPEAKER_02]: Because if it's just been a few unproductive days, are you actually stuck?
- 1:24[SPEAKER_02]: Are you overwhelmed?
- 1:26[SPEAKER_02]: Right, did you miss a goal?
- 1:28[SPEAKER_02]: And that's why you're saying you're stuck?
- 1:30[SPEAKER_02]: Or you stuck because you don't know how to take the next step, and that's perfectly okay.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_02]: Like I actually think that sometimes we're stuck because we've done all that we can do on our own, and we need support, and we need help.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_02]: Are you saying you're stuck because you're comparing yourself to someone else?
- 1:43[SPEAKER_02]: So the important thing here is like you didn't wake up stuck, you might be labeling yourself as stuck.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that we have to identify like kind of stuck, are we the labeled version that we're stuck because we're comparing ourselves to others or the reality that we've got as far as we can.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_02]: And we need to help, we need to ask for that.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_02]: So,
- 2:01[SPEAKER_02]: We kind of thought about this because we've had some great questions come in and we had some great guests and wonderful talking points and it's like, okay, I've done all these things but I'm kind of stuck on this next thing.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_02]: And so, it's not, we'll be fun.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_02]: Let's talk about the outgrowing series because sometimes when we have that grown or self when we are taking action to be the next version of ourselves and we're working on being totally see it.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_02]: We can't get stuck.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you've evolved, right?
- 2:23[SPEAKER_02]: You have new awareness, new understandings, new dreams, new,
- 2:27[SPEAKER_02]: ways of how you want to operate the system that is who you are, right?
- 2:31[SPEAKER_02]: And you have a letting go or trying to of the person that you once were.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_02]: And sometimes when you're in that in between, like it's stuck, right?
- 2:40[SPEAKER_02]: Never like done the update on your phone and then like things don't work the way they're supposed to.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_02]: And the old way is not really functional either.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_02]: But the new way you can like where the buttons moved over here hold on.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_02]: Why are the buttons over here now?
- 2:54[SPEAKER_02]: So, it's kind of the get stuck, because we went looking for where the old buttons were, but they're in the new button setting.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_02]: And so, when you're in that stuck place, eight to me full frustrating, and I don't want you to know you're not alone, I often get stuck in some things I will just say, like, and I just stay out loud, I feel really stuck right now.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_02]: All of a sudden, my brain goes hold on.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_02]: Are we stuck?
- 3:14[SPEAKER_02]: We got this.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_02]: So, what stuck actually is?
- 3:18[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's important that we like talk about like what is it like an identity lag maybe we know where we want to grow and do and be But we aren't feeling like we're there yet.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_02]: By the way, if I just want you know as a habits coach one of the hardest things you can do is change habits They're like psychological like if you have a habit of talking negatively about yourself
- 3:38[SPEAKER_02]: you don't want to do that anymore.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_02]: It's really one of the hardest habits to unravel.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_02]: And so it's not surprising to me that when we are wanting to be a more positive person or a more joyful person about the things we do and see more possibility and ask for more help.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_02]: Like because of the things we've to do in our brain to become the new person, it's easy for us to hang back in the old system in the old ways and have this identity lag.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_02]: Like I want to be here, but I'm still feeling like I'm over here.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_02]: We can be stuck because our nervous system is just overwhelmed, right?
- 4:10[SPEAKER_02]: I think a lot of us take on a lot of things too much at one time.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_02]: It is all or nothing mentality in this world that we live in.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_02]: And so we can actually get stuck because we're overwhelmed.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_02]: I see this in some of the teachers in my elevate program.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_02]: They get stuck on what to do or what to study next because they're trying to be perfect at all of the things rather than like just being in their body.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_02]: and acknowledging where they're at.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_02]: We also get stuck when there's just too many options and we don't have a clarity on what to do.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_02]: Like, oh my gosh, you could do this, you could do that, you could do that, it's like, I'm overwhelmed.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_02]: And so then we feel stuck, right?
- 4:47[SPEAKER_02]: I remember, we were playing our trip to Europe.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_02]: We were like, what do we want to do?
- 4:53[SPEAKER_02]: And it's like we have nine days, we can do anything feels like then Europe is big and I haven't been to so many places and I could go to this place I go to that place and I was just so overwhelmed that I felt stuck and we didn't even plan the whole vacation until kind of right before because we had to just like
- 5:08[SPEAKER_02]: get clear on like okay hold on what is it that we want to do you know where planning our wedding.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_02]: We got recommended a great book called a practical wedding and she was talking about like all these different questions you could ask yourself so you can really take the overwhelm out of the wedding planning and actually take action on what you're going to do.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_02]: But a lot of people get stuck in that because there's just too many options.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_02]: And we can get stuck when our old systems and our old habits just don't work anymore, right?
- 5:37[SPEAKER_02]: Like goodness.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_02]: The way our bodies work in our 20s versus how in our 40s ladies, like we could be doing the things that used to make you feel good and used to make you feel energized and now they just don't work anymore.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_02]: And so you could just feel like you're in a rut.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_02]: So it's important to take note that
- 5:54[SPEAKER_02]: Stuck is not a personality trait.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_02]: It is not something that represents who you are.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_02]: You're not a stuck person, but it is a moment of misalignment.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_02]: And it does mean that we have to get in there.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_02]: Like a mechanic what to see like, what is the actual problem?
- 6:07[SPEAKER_02]: And sometimes that means troubleshooting in your stuckness.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_02]: When you are stuck, it's important that we also take a moment to see how to be get here.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_02]: Like a gentle like hold on.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_02]: How do we get here, right?
- 6:18[SPEAKER_02]: Sometimes if you're road tripping and you get a little lost and you pull it's a cold on how did I make a wrong turn with like backtrack a little bit right so when you are trying to see like how did i get here one thing you cannot do is blame that is not going to work i promise you we talked about that in out growing series you cannot shame and blame yourself into upping unstuck where it will actually just put you further in stuck rot mode and you'll actually just feel bad about yourself at the same time no one wants to do that.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_02]: So we got to wherever we were because of so many things.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_02]: One, how you are raised, what you're a talk to focus on, what you caught that you should focus on, what you caught that you should behave like.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_02]: For example, I definitely was rewarded to the child when I would do things that were above and beyond to support people.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_02]: So I just would go above and beyond all the time.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_02]: And I would say yes to things without even asking myself, if I want to be doing this.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_02]: And I would just put myself out there to help people all the time, because I would help my mom.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_02]: I would help other people.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_02]: I would get all these affirmations, words of affirmation, my love language, and I would then get to feel seen.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my gosh, this is the last thing.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_02]: She's all these amazing things for us.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_02]: And so then as an adult, I, without thinking about how these, yeses would make me feel, would just say yes all the time, right?
- 7:31[SPEAKER_02]: So like, I got myself to overwhelm and stuck several times in my adult life because I was doing the things that helped me feel safe and seen as a child.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_02]: These are things that you don't even realize you're doing.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_02]: It takes therapy to look back and see, how do I get here?
- 7:47[SPEAKER_02]: How do I keep working for the same type of person?
- 7:50[SPEAKER_02]: How do I keep dating the same type of person?
- 7:52[SPEAKER_02]: How do I keep ending up with friends who are all the same, right?
- 7:56[SPEAKER_02]: It's because of how we are.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_02]: making decisions and taking actions and it's all based on things that we're put into our systems, our system updates when we were growing up.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_02]: And so really, when you can figure that out, it's really empowering, right?
- 8:09[SPEAKER_02]: So because of that, we all, when we're children, we optimize for safety, not alignment, like as a kid, we don't know what our goals are, right?
- 8:16[SPEAKER_02]: So we do things that feel, make us feel safe in the environment.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_02]: So if you grew up in a place where like,
- 8:22[SPEAKER_02]: When you were perfect, it felt like you could control the environment, then you would just be perfect all the time.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_02]: And if I could just be perfect all the time, then no one's going to yell, no, it doesn't need to be bad.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_02]: But then what happens is you just try to be perfect all the time.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_02]: And that's exhausting.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_02]: By the way, it's not an alignment.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_02]: But you're wanting to do in your life.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_02]: People are supposed to make mistakes.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_02]: You're not going to learn things that way.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_02]: And of course, you're going to feel stuck.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_02]: Because you're like, I should be able to do this.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_02]: But you didn't get to make the mistakes along the way to help you to learn how to do it.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_02]: We also stay in things that work.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_02]: We stay past expiration dates, right?
- 8:51[SPEAKER_02]: We stay in them because they're certainty.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_02]: So we get stuck often because it worked back then.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_02]: So it's gonna work now or I should be so grateful that I'm in this situation that I'm in.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_02]: Other people have it worse.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_02]: So sometimes we just stay because things work.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_02]: So, if one of those things like really goes, oh, that's kind of me, that's kind of why I get stuck.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_02]: It's important that we don't say, oh, like, I've messed up.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_02]: I messed up my whole life.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_02]: No, I mean, that is like, I think my gosh, my brain will catastrophize.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_02]: Like, when I became a plies instructor, and I met people who had been teaching Pilais longer because they are the same age as me, Ish, but they learned about Pilais before.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_02]: I remember going, oh my God, I've missed out on so many years that I could have been doing Pilais.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_02]: Because the fact that I discovered Pilates at the age of 22 is at the time when it was only four years legal to say the word Pilates is amazing.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm over here going, oh, I messed up.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_02]: I should have her known about this sooner.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_02]: But we didn't mess up.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_02]: We built our lives around what worked until they don't work anymore.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_02]: And now the stuck feeling is just because things
- 10:05[SPEAKER_02]: You've outgrown, and you're in the stuck mode because you're in this between, and we have to figure out what's gonna work.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_02]: And I'll never forget, like in 2013, I was single, I wasn't couched off anymore at this point.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_02]: I'd found the place I wanted to live.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_02]: I was transferred, give more responsibility, blah, blah, blah.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_02]: And somebody suggested that I do this like birth chart.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, futuristic.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_02]: Not psychic thing because it's based on birth charts, but just, you know, get some astrological help.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_02]: So I did this, and the person was like, you have gone as far as you can on your own.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_02]: And I was like, what?
- 10:42[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, yep, you've actually done a great job.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_02]: You've gone as far as you can on your own.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_02]: And all the things that you were wanting to do in this life you must do with other people.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_02]: And that is something like, by the way, like, I am not a person who does things, like, I don't ask for help.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_02]: I just like, I can do it all my own.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_02]: I've done it all my own.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_02]: I've moved myself.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_02]: Like, multiple times my, like, buy myself, like, I can do it right.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_02]: But hearing that, I was like, oh.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so I built this life that has worked for me.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_02]: And if I wanna continue on, I'm gonna need to get some help.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_02]: And you know what, he wasn't wrong because here I had like, got a new play sticker.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_02]: It really beautifully like got promoted at my job.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_02]: And all this stuff, and I still felt like something is missing.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_02]: it's missing.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_02]: And so I started seeking out and looking for like opportunities to partner up with different people, not in necessarily business, but just like on projects and and oh, maybe this person could I could hire that person to help me, right?
- 11:39[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_02]: So I do think before we continue on on the stuck thing, we do have to chat a little bit about ADHD.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_02]: We do need to talk a little bit about the ADHD.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_02]: And the reason is my ADHD loves is we sometimes equate being stuck with just not having the dopamine high that we're constantly seeking.
- 12:04[UNKNOWN]: Okay.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_02]: So as ADHD people, we often say yes to 17 things because our brains think a mile a minute, we're three steps ahead of everybody and we can take it all on and also we like the dopamine highs and what happens is especially if you're in your 40s and you didn't know
- 12:28[SPEAKER_02]: And not only as you go through parry menopause, does do you lose your hormone help there, but you already were lacking that in your ADHD brain.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_02]: And so now you feel a little bit stuck in overwhelmed because, well, your system's aren't working.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_02]: and you said yes to a lot.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_02]: And the systems that used to help you don't work.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_02]: So we have to be thoughtful and kind to ourselves.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_02]: If you are someone who's listening with ADHD, I highly recommend getting some help to understand how your brain works.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_02]: So that you can not only get unstuck and ditched the overwhelm, but truly learn how to work with it.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_02]: And it's not like me versus my ADHD brain at all, but it's like, okay, hold on.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_02]: I know in order for me to do these things, I need these tools.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_02]: So I need to set myself up for success.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_02]: And I'll never forget my psychiatrist said, I can give you the drugs to help you focus, but if you keep saying, yes, to too many things, the drugs won't help if the you problem.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_02]: And I really think that if you are feeling stuck right now, because you're doing too many things, because your ADHD brand is like, yeah, I want that and I want that, I want that, I don't mean it, I don't mean it.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_02]: that we find ways to pause or delete or delegate or delay some of the things that we're working on.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_02]: Just be honest about that because your brain is on broken, it's just overstimulated and under-supported, right?
- 13:54[SPEAKER_02]: So we need tools.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_02]: So if you're stuck because of the ADHD, I see you we'll get some experts on here, but also do take a moment to recognize what is the ADHD?
- 14:06[SPEAKER_02]: versus like what is stuckness versus what is overwhelm so that you're not labeling things that are inaccurate and then feeling more stuck because you don't have the tools to work because we got mislabeled, right?
- 14:17[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, last thing I just want to say is like I think if you are an old stator who is listening to this right firstborn of anything.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_02]: There is a tendency to do a lot and show it on ourselves like I should be doing more of this or I used to be more productive that what is wrong with me that I can't do this anymore and I will just say that like One we're not the person that we were 20 years ago so yeah I cannot take on the things that I did 20 years ago also because I know better I know what I am capable of I know what I'm good at I know more of what I want I know more I don't want and so please don't
- 14:55[SPEAKER_02]: should on yourself because we had Rory on our podcast.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_02]: And he said, he just makes you a should head, right?
- 15:01[SPEAKER_02]: So you want to make sure that you are not stuck because of the extra pressure that you're putting on yourself.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_02]: Life is hard enough.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_02]: There's enough pressures.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_02]: And while you used to be more productive, that doesn't mean you have to stay at that production level.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_02]: Like, we don't expect people who are old in us to produce at the same level that they did when they were 20.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_02]: We're like, oh my God, you're retired.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_02]: Go be retired.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_02]: That's the same for you.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_02]: So double-checking like, are you stuck or overwhelmed because you're putting too much pressure in yourself about what you actually can handle at this moment?
- 15:31[SPEAKER_02]: Do you have a schedule or tools?
- 15:34[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we live in a tech age.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot of ways that we can get reminders and prompts or get help.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, goodness, if you're like, I wish I was a better cook, chat to be tea is actually fucking great for recipes.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not gonna lie.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_02]: I don't cook, but brag at some good ones on there.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_02]: So if you're thinking that pressure,
- 15:51[SPEAKER_02]: creates movement.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_02]: My ADHD people, I know that pressure, last minute pressure, that procrastination gets you feeling like I finally have the pressure I need to keep going.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_02]: But.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_02]: for a lot of us it actually just creates paralysis.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_02]: That pressure just like causes us to just, there's too much.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what to do right now.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_02]: And so, you know, yeah, if you know how to use your pressure to get your work done, go rate, but if it's actually making you feel stuck, well, then it's no longer good tool for us.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_02]: So we're gonna talk about stuck into our next episode,
- 16:31[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, how do we realign, how do we do we need motivation like how do we actually get unstuck.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to do that.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_02]: But I've before we do that.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_02]: I just want to say what if you're not stuck.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_02]: What if you're just recalibrating.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_02]: What if you are in process and because you're in process, it requires unraveling of things that no longer work and.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_02]: Testing things that will you're not going to always get it right so you might be like I know longer want to use this tool do this thing it's going to be this tool and that tool doesn't work you're like well now I'm stuck no you actually have information this tool doesn't work why doesn't work that's information and then you can find a new tool.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, this tool.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_02]: I like this, but not that.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_02]: It's just information.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_02]: So you're not stuck.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_02]: You're recovery.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_02]: You're not behind.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_02]: You are in an update, right?
- 17:22[SPEAKER_02]: You're not actually going backwards.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_02]: When we're stuck, we think we're, oh my God, now I'm going backward.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_02]: No, you're not.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_02]: You're actually trying to figure out how do I take the next step forward.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_02]: Right, you've written on a mountain on a hike, and you get to a place where you're like, wait a minute, do I go left or do I go right?
- 17:37[SPEAKER_02]: Do you say, I'm stuck?
- 17:38[SPEAKER_02]: No, you're like, I am a hold on, let me check the map.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I go this way, okay, that's the right way.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_02]: So you're not stuck.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_02]: You're not behind, you're an update.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_02]: And because you're not stuck.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_02]: because it says the moment of misalignment or transition and the real question does become like, how do we get unstuck, how do we move forward?
