- 1:40Speaker 7: Up and welcome to movie meltdown i'm brian i'm fred
- 1:47Speaker 7: You're the one that said to do it now.
- 1:48Speaker 4: I'm Greg.
- 1:52Speaker 7: And we are back for another episode of The Caffeinated
- 1:54Speaker 7: Movie Geek and Cookies.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Cappuccino on my butt.
- 1:57Speaker 4: I still drink coffee.
- 2:00Speaker 2: The last fucking thing you need is another cup of coffee.
- 2:03Speaker 2: It's time for The Caffeinated Movie Geek.
- 2:05Speaker 4: I thought you were going to do a little bit
- 2:09Speaker 4: longer intro, but hey.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Have you done this before?
- 2:11Speaker 5: I have.
- 2:13Speaker 2: What's funny is we were, like, preparing for this moment
- 2:17Speaker 2: for 20 minutes, an hour, and then we can't get
- 2:19Speaker 2: it together.
- 2:20Speaker 7: Sounds about right.
- 2:22Speaker 4: We're drinking coffee and eating cookies.
- 2:24Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah. That's how you bribe all these people. Oh, no, wait,
- 2:28Speaker 7: just us.
- 2:29Speaker 4: All these people.
- 2:30Speaker 7: We're coming to you live via digital recording from Nancy's
- 2:32Speaker 7: Bagel Rounds, where the few of us will get together,
- 2:35Speaker 7: drink coffee, talk movies, and eat cookies.
- 2:38Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 2:38Speaker 7: What else do we do?
- 2:40Speaker 2: Sometimes we take pictures.
- 2:42Speaker 7: Yeah, occasionally. I want to document each one, so if
- 2:45Speaker 7: somebody can just take photos each time as we go.
- 2:48Speaker 2: If you're going to be in a picture, Greg, you
- 2:50Speaker 2: might want to zip your pants.
- 2:52Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 2:53Speaker 7: Just like every week we have. All right, so, gang,
- 2:59Speaker 7: I ask you, what blend of coffee are we drinking
- 3:02Speaker 7: this week?
- 3:03Speaker 4: Thundermox.
- 3:06Speaker 11: Oh, God.
- 3:07Speaker 7: They specifically said they wanted to do it in unison.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Next time we're going to do it, we'll harmonize, though.
- 3:12Speaker 2: You go low, I'll go.
- 3:13Speaker 4: We're going to do the Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young
- 3:16Speaker 4: kind of.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:17Speaker 7: We don't even have enough to do that.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 3:19Speaker 7: We don't have enough of a crew to do that.
- 3:21Speaker 4: We've got Crosby, Stills, and.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Well, I can sing two parts at once, like Morticia's
- 3:27Speaker 2: sister on The Addams Family, if you remember that. She
- 3:30Speaker 2: could sing harmonies with herself, and she had flowers growing
- 3:34Speaker 2: in her hair. That was lovely.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Yes.
- 3:39Speaker 7: All right, so with that, I guess I will knock
- 3:43Speaker 7: out my geek activities this time around. Actually, I've seen
- 3:48Speaker 7: quite a bit, and a few of them I'm going
- 3:52Speaker 7: to save for the second half because I've actually watched
- 3:54Speaker 7: quite a few remakes lately. But one that I watched
- 3:58Speaker 7: just yesterday is really– it's half the reason. Like, I
- 4:02Speaker 7: kind of half wanted to watch it like a week
- 4:03Speaker 7: or so ago when I first saw it show up.
- 4:06Speaker 7: But after last week's, you know, the last full movie
- 4:11Speaker 7: discussion that we had, it really needed to be watched.
- 4:14Speaker 7: I watched Trespass, which is Nicolas Cage, Nicole Kidman– Basically,
- 4:23Speaker 7: people break into their house and hold them hostage, which
- 4:25Speaker 7: sounds really familiar to a movie we just talked about. So, yeah,
- 4:30Speaker 7: I almost wanted to watch it in comparison because it's
- 4:32Speaker 7: doing such a different version of that. This is like
- 4:36Speaker 7: the most Hollywood version of that exact same story. And
- 4:41Speaker 7: I didn't realize until the end why. I mean, I
- 4:43Speaker 7: think I kind of remember when the trailer first came out,
- 4:46Speaker 7: seeing who directed it. It's Joel Schumacher. Oh, yeah. It's
- 4:51Speaker 7: so weird. He does, like, such back-and-forth stuff. I mean,
- 4:54Speaker 7: he can do stuff that's a little different and kind
- 4:57Speaker 7: of good, and then he does the most mainstream, watered-down,
- 5:01Speaker 7: generic stuff ever. And that's kind of what the... I mean,
- 5:04Speaker 7: it wasn't bad if you like these kind of movies, but,
- 5:07Speaker 7: I mean, it's, like, by the numbers exactly how... I mean, yeah,
- 5:11Speaker 7: some of the stuff going on And then some of
- 5:15Speaker 7: these shots he works in, he keeps doing these little
- 5:17Speaker 7: like cutaways that one of the guys is having these
- 5:20Speaker 7: like almost like dream sequence shots of Nicole Kidman that
- 5:25Speaker 7: look like they're shooting like a fragrance commercial. Like some
- 5:29Speaker 7: of the stuff he shoots is like so cheesy. It's
- 5:31Speaker 7: like Michael Bay level of cheesiness, which is saying something
- 5:35Speaker 7: because this stuff just looks cheesy. cheesy you know it's
- 5:38Speaker 7: like he's they they've both of them they found this
- 5:40Speaker 7: way to take something that's very simple and just the
- 5:44Speaker 7: framing of a shot or the the color scheme or
- 5:46Speaker 7: the way that they have that just looks cheesy that
- 5:49Speaker 7: just looks so oh it's so bad the way they
- 5:53Speaker 7: just kind of force that into the scene and there's
- 5:56Speaker 7: a lot of other parts in the movie that are
- 5:58Speaker 7: just kind of normal but yeah he cuts to those
- 6:00Speaker 7: and i would almost laugh every time but i'm like
- 6:03Speaker 7: what is this we're looking at here It's like, yeah,
- 6:06Speaker 7: maybe that's the fragrance. Schumacher. They just need to run that.
- 6:10Speaker 2: I don't know. I think it's Kidman. I think we
- 6:14Speaker 2: all dream about Al.
- 6:15Speaker 7: Well, you need the by, kind of like the by
- 6:17Speaker 7: Calvin Klein. Oh, yes. Kidman by Schumacher. So, yeah, other
- 6:24Speaker 7: than that, it is funny looking at Trifft Pass in
- 6:28Speaker 7: comparison with Funny Games, because Funny Games is at least
- 6:31Speaker 7: really trying and going out of its way to comment on,
- 6:34Speaker 7: you know, these... these cheesy movies and this is that
- 6:37Speaker 7: cheesy movie it actually does all the things that it's
- 6:40Speaker 7: pointing out and it's funny because this was just made
- 6:43Speaker 7: last year so i mean it's not like they're referencing
- 6:46Speaker 7: you know that movie it's like this movie came out
- 6:48Speaker 7: after like 10 years past the first one plus and
- 6:54Speaker 7: still has yeah it's just hitting the exact same points
- 6:58Speaker 7: in every one of these house taken over by terrorist movies,
- 7:02Speaker 7: which I mean, there's a lot. I was thinking there's
- 7:04Speaker 7: like desperate hours. There's, I mean, there's so many that
- 7:07Speaker 7: it's almost its own little sub genre.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Now you want my favorite, the refs with Dennis Leary.
- 7:13Speaker 7: You know, at the time I had not watched that
- 7:15Speaker 7: in a long time. I'm thinking we need to work
- 7:17Speaker 7: that in. It's like a holiday movie for our big Christmas.
- 7:20Speaker 4: It could be a good holiday movie, but yeah, I mean,
- 7:24Speaker 4: in that lighthearted way, Hey, this guy's holding us hostage.
- 7:28Speaker 7: You know, that's, It's more of a fun version, I suppose.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Right, right.
- 7:33Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't know. Trespass. It's watchable. It's not terrible.
- 7:37Speaker 7: It's just pretty boring as those type of movies go.
- 7:43Speaker 4: I don't have any use for most Nicole Kidman movies.
- 7:48Speaker 2: You know, something I really loved her in was an
- 7:51Speaker 2: early movie in her career called Flirting, which is about
- 7:55Speaker 2: a boys' school in Australia that was across the lake
- 7:59Speaker 2: from a girls' school And it was just like a
- 8:01Speaker 2: growing-up romance, and she was not the romantic person. She
- 8:06Speaker 2: was like an older student at the school. It was
- 8:09Speaker 2: like a hall monitor and had this authority that sort
- 8:12Speaker 2: of went to her head. But then when she decided
- 8:15Speaker 2: to be cool and be friends, it was just hilarious.
- 8:19Speaker 2: It was great.
- 8:20Speaker 7: I was so hoping you were going to say BMX bands.
- 8:22Speaker 4: That's exactly right. That's the best word to say.
- 8:26Speaker 7: We're adding that to the list, aren't we? Yeah.
- 8:29Speaker 4: I've seen it a couple times.
- 8:31Speaker 2: I'm not a big fan of hers.
- 8:34Speaker 7: She's one of those that is all over the map.
- 8:37Speaker 7: There's stuff that is so... This is so boring. She
- 8:41Speaker 7: doesn't even try very hard. This is just so lame.
- 8:45Speaker 7: And then she'll do other stuff that she shows she's
- 8:47Speaker 7: got talent. I don't know. It's very strange.
- 8:51Speaker 4: What was the ghost? Was it The Others?
- 8:53Speaker 7: The Others is a really good movie.
- 8:55Speaker 4: You know, I liked a lot of it.
- 8:59Speaker 7: It's well made.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:01Speaker 2: It's no orphanage.
- 9:03Speaker 7: No, it's no orphanage.
- 9:05Speaker 4: I'm happy that the orphanage hasn't been remade yet.
- 9:08Speaker 7: Give it time.
- 9:08Speaker 4: Because I think it would be really bad.
- 9:11Speaker 7: Give it time.
- 9:12Speaker 4: I told you all about it. That was on an episode,
- 9:15Speaker 4: wasn't it? Yeah, it was. Where we had the two-part
- 9:18Speaker 4: love our kids.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah. And that's why I watched it after you talked
- 9:22Speaker 2: about it. I decided to watch it. I was stunned
- 9:25Speaker 2: how great it was. Good.
- 9:27Speaker 4: I'm glad somebody said it. I loaned that to someone
- 9:30Speaker 4: and never gave it back, and I've not heard from
- 9:32Speaker 4: him in a long time. So if you're listening, Chris,
- 9:34Speaker 4: I want my movie back.
- 9:35Speaker 7: Give me that back.
- 9:36Speaker 4: I know you listen sometimes. You've told me about it.
- 9:39Speaker 7: So aside from that, I also saw this one was
- 9:46Speaker 7: almost directly tied to a purchase, which if you're on
- 9:49Speaker 7: the Facebook page, I actually posted on there. Last weekend
- 9:51Speaker 7: I went to the big cheesy flea market. And found the,
- 9:54Speaker 7: uh i think it's the deadly hands of kung fu
- 9:58Speaker 7: nice comic book that had the special one-off special edition
- 10:02Speaker 7: with billy jack in it oh yeah which is it
- 10:05Speaker 7: was pretty awesome i'm glad i picked it up but
- 10:08Speaker 7: um thinking that i got home and i was like
- 10:11Speaker 7: i if i had ever seen billy jack i don't
- 10:13Speaker 7: remember 99 of it so The next day, I was like, alright,
- 10:17Speaker 7: I'm watching Billy Jack. So I watched Billy Jack. It's
- 10:21Speaker 7: another one of those I would throw out there for us,
- 10:23Speaker 7: because there's some interesting stuff going on there.
- 10:26Speaker 2: I bet I could retrieve the entire song word for
- 10:29Speaker 2: word from my memory.
- 10:31Speaker 7: I don't know that we should go down there.
- 10:33Speaker 4: No, I want you to do a two-part arm. A
- 10:36Speaker 4: two-part arm. With flowers growing out of your head.
- 10:41Speaker 2: It's funny, I can't remember things I need to know,
- 10:44Speaker 2: but like stupid, cheesy songs that come on the radio,
- 10:48Speaker 2: I find that I know the words to all of them.
- 10:50Speaker 7: Every word.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Every one.
- 10:51Speaker 4: For me, it's bad commercials from when I was a child.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Even the ones I've forgotten that they existed. Still, somehow
- 10:58Speaker 2: I know the words to them.
- 11:00Speaker 7: Every once in a while I'll do that.
- 11:01Speaker 2: I'll be like, God, why do I.
- 11:02Speaker 12: Know all these words?
- 11:04Speaker 7: It's scary. Let's see. The only other one that I
- 11:09Speaker 7: won't bring up later because it's not a remake is
- 11:13Speaker 7: I Saw Hugo. Which is actually really good. It was
- 11:17Speaker 7: one of those I haven't been to the theater in,
- 11:19Speaker 7: I don't know, four or five months. Yeah, it's been
- 11:25Speaker 7: a long time. I have no money, nobody else wants
- 11:28Speaker 7: to go, but this one, it's like because it was 3D,
- 11:32Speaker 7: and as much as I'm sick of 3D, and I
- 11:34Speaker 7: don't like giving money to 3D crap that they don't
- 11:36Speaker 7: pay any attention to the technology, especially if they're just
- 11:40Speaker 7: up converting any of that nonsense, I really don't want
- 11:43Speaker 7: to give them the money, but I mean, this not
- 11:45Speaker 7: only is them specifically setting out to make a 3D movie,
- 11:48Speaker 7: but it's Scorsese setting out to make a 3D movie.
- 11:52Speaker 7: So for that, it's like I kind of wanted to
- 11:54Speaker 7: see it in that experience, because you're not going to
- 11:56Speaker 7: get that again. And once you're at home, it's going
- 11:58Speaker 7: to be a totally different thing. And again, in a way,
- 12:01Speaker 7: almost to just kind of support what Scorsese's tried to
- 12:04Speaker 7: do at this point. And, you know, for him, that's,
- 12:07Speaker 7: I think, what is so awesome about it, really. It's
- 12:09Speaker 7: like the story itself, like the kid story that's going
- 12:13Speaker 7: on there is just kind of a basic story and
- 12:15Speaker 7: that almost could have been its own little movie told
- 12:17Speaker 7: by anybody it's you know once you get into it
- 12:20Speaker 7: you realize it's not a kid's movie about you know
- 12:23Speaker 7: a robot guy or whatever the hell that looks like
- 12:25Speaker 7: it is in the trailer because it's a really misleading
- 12:27Speaker 7: trailer that it really is this like love letter to
- 12:31Speaker 7: film and it really is all about you know the
- 12:34Speaker 7: the guy who makes that you know voyage to the
- 12:36Speaker 7: moon and you know it like focuses on all of
- 12:39Speaker 7: these early films and and how much It's looking at
- 12:43Speaker 7: it through the eyes of these kids who are discovering
- 12:45Speaker 7: film and you're realizing that's Scorsese and it's how much
- 12:48Speaker 7: he loves film and it's showing this overview of all
- 12:51Speaker 7: the early film stuff. I think that's the impressive part.
- 12:55Speaker 7: And to watch him watch how much he loves film
- 12:59Speaker 7: and at the same time watch him sort of trying
- 13:01Speaker 7: to embrace a whole new technology and grow as an artist.
- 13:05Speaker 7: How many years has he been doing this? But it's
- 13:07Speaker 7: like he opened a whole new door into film himself.
- 13:10Speaker 7: So it is almost that little bit of discovery in
- 13:12Speaker 7: there for this director who, you know, by now it
- 13:15Speaker 7: should be old hat, but he's found a new way
- 13:18Speaker 7: to make it challenging again, which I think is kind
- 13:20Speaker 7: of interesting. The 3D is good. It's just like all
- 13:23Speaker 7: of them. It's like, it's almost, it works for that
- 13:26Speaker 7: novelty and I like it there. But again, I would
- 13:28Speaker 7: almost like to go back and rewatch it in 2D.
- 13:31Speaker 7: Like I wanted to get the experience, but it's, it's
- 13:33Speaker 7: still sort of distracting sometimes. I mean, it's, There's stuff
- 13:37Speaker 7: it does that is amazing with the 3D technology, and
- 13:40Speaker 7: there are times where, especially this opening sweeping shot where
- 13:44Speaker 7: you feel like you're moving, like it actually physically feels
- 13:48Speaker 7: like you're zipping along with the camera. So, I mean,
- 13:51Speaker 7: it does that kind of stuff and does it well.
- 13:53Speaker 7: It does a lot of the layered stuff amazingly well,
- 13:56Speaker 7: and stuff really does look, you know, like there's depth
- 13:59Speaker 7: to it, like it's, you know, just kind of not
- 14:01Speaker 7: cheesy 3D stuff coming at your face, but a lot
- 14:03Speaker 7: of stuff that's almost sitting outside of the screen and
- 14:06Speaker 7: in the foreground that's actually outside of the screen in
- 14:10Speaker 7: the theater sometimes. So it's like that kind of stuff
- 14:12Speaker 7: is cool, but at the same time, just, I don't know,
- 14:15Speaker 7: 3D in general, I'm kind of getting bored with it.
- 14:18Speaker 7: It's overplayed at this point. It's cool to see what
- 14:21Speaker 7: Scorsese's doing with it, but again, I don't know how
- 14:23Speaker 7: much I'm getting in line for a lot of this
- 14:26Speaker 7: other stuff. If they continue to keep doing this, I
- 14:28Speaker 7: don't know.
- 14:28Speaker 4: I think the only.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Way I would continue to see 3D is if.
- 14:35Speaker 4: Somebody really pushes, I, I'm not 40.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Well, I'll go when they make 40.
- 14:41Speaker 4: I thought we already had, yeah, no, I'm, I'm, I'm saying,
- 14:45Speaker 4: you know, where it is over the top immersion in,
- 14:49Speaker 4: in 3d overwhelmingly. So, because otherwise it's just gimmicky. And
- 14:55Speaker 4: then the other, the other way, the other end of it,
- 14:58Speaker 4: because I'm not going to sit there with those glasses
- 15:00Speaker 4: on for two hours. It just, I can't do it. Um,
- 15:06Speaker 4: And the money aspect. Movies like Final Destination, though, where
- 15:12Speaker 4: it's already cheesy. you're doing it just for the spectacle.
- 15:17Speaker 7: Which was the last one. That's what I was thinking.
- 15:19Speaker 7: I think that's the last time I went to the theater.
- 15:20Speaker 7: That's the last thing I've seen.
- 15:22Speaker 4: And I can get behind, not for the price, but
- 15:25Speaker 4: I can get behind that. That's fun.
- 15:27Speaker 7: For the spectacle. Again, which is kind of what I
- 15:30Speaker 7: like about the old, you know, it's still sort of
- 15:32Speaker 7: playing that same William Castle card. You know, it's just like,
- 15:35Speaker 7: look at this crazy stuff we're doing in the movies.
- 15:37Speaker 7: Come on down. From that, you know, sales pitch angle,
- 15:41Speaker 7: the fact that they're owning up to, I mean, This
- 15:43Speaker 7: is going to be a big, goofy show. Come on
- 15:45Speaker 7: down and see it. It's like, I understand that. I
- 15:48Speaker 7: do like that kind of nonsense end of it. This
- 15:52Speaker 7: is just going to be fun, so let's do it.
- 15:53Speaker 4: So, I don't know.
- 15:55Speaker 7: I can get behind that every once in a while,
- 15:57Speaker 7: but I'm not going to be doing it every week.
- 16:00Speaker 7: Other than that, there's like three other ones, but they're
- 16:03Speaker 7: all part of the list. I've seen three more movies,
- 16:07Speaker 7: and they're all remakes, which is sort of what led
- 16:08Speaker 7: us into this.
- 16:09Speaker 2: I've seen a lot of remakes, too, yeah.
- 16:11Speaker 7: So, I guess... We will take a break and come
- 16:15Speaker 7: back and go ahead and get into the question of
- 16:18Speaker 7: the week.
- 16:19Speaker 9: Okay.
- 16:34Speaker 7: Let me see you in great detail.
- 16:37Speaker 9: There's something mysterious about you. Now I can't live this
- 16:44Speaker 9: love without you.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Girl, I'm just so curious.
- 16:47Speaker 9: I'm so curious. Stop playing, babe. No more guessing games.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Don't leave me so curious.
- 16:55Speaker 7: You're the hottest chick that I've seen thus far.
- 16:58Speaker 4: Shut the shades on. Got you glowing in the dark.
- 17:02Speaker 7: We have just seen rushes direct from Hollywood of.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Pictures being released in the coming weeks.
- 17:08Speaker 5: And we are proud to announce that this theater will
- 17:10Speaker 5: soon bring you the greatest array of pictures ever to.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Reach our screen. You'll see the finest stars in exciting performances.
- 17:18Speaker 2: You'll thrill to the suspense, comedy.
- 17:21Speaker 5: Romance, and drama of world-famous stories.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Here's a glimpse of a few of them coming to
- 17:27Speaker 4: this theater soon.
- 17:32Speaker 5: You're right, that was a gunshot you heard. That was
- 17:48Speaker 5: the signal that brought all the trouble out in the open.
- 17:52Speaker 5: It's a scene from our new picture, The Man Who
- 17:53Speaker 5: Knew Too Much. As you know, Alfred Hitchcock has an
- 17:58Speaker 5: uncanny knack for coming up with the unusual in entertainment. Well,
- 18:01Speaker 5: the man who knew too much can certainly be put
- 18:03Speaker 5: in that category. I play the part of an American doctor,
- 18:08Speaker 5: Doris Day is my wife, and the story is about
- 18:11Speaker 5: our trip abroad that started out as a holiday and
- 18:14Speaker 5: ended up as a nightmare. And to film it, Hitchcock
- 18:17Speaker 5: took us thousands of miles away from Hollywood to Marrakesh,
- 18:22Speaker 5: which is right in the center of the North African
- 18:24Speaker 5: trouble area. And that was just the beginning. From there,
- 18:28Speaker 5: we flew to London for backgrounds of a whole strange
- 18:32Speaker 5: series of events that ended up that final night in
- 18:35Speaker 5: the Great Concert Hall, where the cue for murder was
- 18:40Speaker 5: one single crash of the cymbals.

- 19:45Speaker 2: Hello there, ladies and good gentlemen.
- 19:47Speaker 1: I'm here to talk to you about something very important today.
- 19:49Speaker 1: That's outside the cinema. I know a lot of you
- 19:52Speaker 1: listening now enjoy the film world. Boy, outside the cinema
- 19:55Speaker 1: covers all kinds of good films. If you're looking for
- 19:57Speaker 1: the classics, perhaps you're looking for a good old Nazi
- 19:59Speaker 1: film where the Nazis torture and rape everyone in sight.
- 20:02Speaker 7: Or giant monsters crawl from the sea.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Or perhaps an Italian film where Edward's finish takes a
- 20:06Speaker 1: close off for no apparent reason or renegade bikers just
- 20:09Speaker 1: do whatever they damn well please perhaps even occasionally turn
- 20:12Speaker 1: into a werewolf then Outside the Cinema is your place
- 20:15Speaker 1: to go that's www.outsidethecinema.com Outside the Cinema your source for
- 20:22Speaker 1: cult movie discussion.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Hi, this is Stephen Jeffries, and you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 20:48Speaker 7: Oh, you're so cool, Brewster.
- 20:51Speaker 2: I can't stand it.
- 20:53Speaker 11: It's part of your problem, you know. You haven't seen
- 21:04Speaker 11: enough movies. All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.
- 21:08Speaker 2: And now, on with the show.
- 21:11Speaker 9: Remake me Overtake me.
- 21:25Speaker 10: All right, we are back and it is time for
- 21:29Speaker 10: the grind.
- 22:03Speaker 7: Once again, in this segment, we discuss a specific topic
- 22:06Speaker 7: or question related to movies. And as often as possible,
- 22:09Speaker 7: we'd like the suggestions to come from you, the listener. Again,
- 22:14Speaker 7: we've gotten a few on the Facebook page, but we
- 22:16Speaker 7: still would like to get some good generalize. Everybody kind
- 22:20Speaker 7: of comes up with very specific, you know, what's the
- 22:22Speaker 7: best this or that. I kind of like to be
- 22:24Speaker 7: more general. discussions of, you know, kind of a grand
- 22:29Speaker 7: topic to cover, which hardly anybody's given us one of those.
- 22:33Speaker 7: So if you have something like that, email it to
- 22:36Speaker 7: us at geeksatmoviemeltdown.com and we'll try to work it into
- 22:40Speaker 7: the upcoming show. This topic, as I mentioned, because just
- 22:46Speaker 7: since last time we were here, I've watched three movies
- 22:49Speaker 7: that were all remakes.
- 22:51Speaker 4: I can't wait to hear which ones these are.
- 22:52Speaker 11: And.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:54Speaker 7: And I mean, the last two, the last two movies
- 22:57Speaker 7: that we've discussed on the show have both been remakes actually. So,
- 23:01Speaker 7: or have been remade and we were talking about the original,
- 23:05Speaker 7: but yeah, it got me thinking about remakes in general.
- 23:08Speaker 7: And I thought I would kind of throw it out
- 23:09Speaker 7: there this week for you guys to address the obvious
- 23:12Speaker 7: issues with it. And then maybe actually the more I
- 23:15Speaker 7: looked at it, I started coming up with some pretty
- 23:17Speaker 7: good examples of a good way to do a remake.
- 23:20Speaker 7: And there's more than I, My knee-jerk reaction is to
- 23:23Speaker 7: hate the whole idea, but the more I looked at it,
- 23:25Speaker 7: I was like, there's a lot of really good technical
- 23:28Speaker 7: remakes out there. So, I mean, you can't condemn the
- 23:31Speaker 7: entire process. There's some good stuff. One of which is
- 23:35Speaker 7: the first one I will go into that I watched.
- 23:37Speaker 7: I finally watched Fright Night, the new one. Oh, yeah.
- 23:40Speaker 7: The one that I meant to go see at the
- 23:42Speaker 7: theater and didn't, again, because I never go out to
- 23:44Speaker 7: the theater. The Colin Farrell. The Colin Farrell, and I...
- 23:48Speaker 7: I mean, you can go back and listen to the episode.
- 23:51Speaker 7: We talked about it. I did not like the idea
- 23:53Speaker 7: from the get-go.
- 23:54Speaker 10: Right.
- 23:54Speaker 7: As, again, knee-jerk reaction to most remakes, but especially of
- 23:57Speaker 7: stuff that I love. And I love the original Fright Night.
- 24:01Speaker 7: I think it's one of the better horror movies in general.
- 24:05Speaker 7: It's probably my favorite vampire movie that I can think
- 24:08Speaker 7: of offhand. It's definitely one of my favorite vampire movies.
- 24:11Speaker 7: So it was a really tough... Going into that one, knowing,
- 24:17Speaker 7: you know, how much it had, you know, sort of
- 24:19Speaker 7: to live up to or, you know, the deck stacked
- 24:21Speaker 7: against it going into that. Yeah, Fright Night is really good. Like,
- 24:27Speaker 7: I was not expecting to... I mean, it's just kind
- 24:29Speaker 7: of fun. I mean, it knows it's a fun horror
- 24:32Speaker 7: movie and it totally takes advantage of that. So, yeah,
- 24:35Speaker 7: I mean, as much as I expected to have issues
- 24:38Speaker 7: with it, like, just about everything they did... was right
- 24:42Speaker 7: really like in a way that i i didn't expect
- 24:45Speaker 7: it kind of hits all the notes of the first
- 24:47Speaker 7: one like there are but it almost switches them up
- 24:49Speaker 7: sometimes things happen in a different order than it did
- 24:52Speaker 7: in the first one or i mean they they slightly
- 24:55Speaker 7: adjust the character so that they're not quite you know
- 24:59Speaker 7: the same as they were but they end up sort
- 25:00Speaker 7: of falling into the same basic situation and they they
- 25:04Speaker 7: fill the same you know spot in the the characters
- 25:07Speaker 7: but Yeah, they do just enough different to make it interesting,
- 25:12Speaker 7: and everybody involved kind of does a good job with it. Yeah,
- 25:15Speaker 7: it's pretty damn entertaining. I had a lot of fun
- 25:17Speaker 7: with it. There's a little bit of cheesy CG stuff
- 25:20Speaker 7: in it, but again, it's a new movie. They always
- 25:22Speaker 7: put cheesy CG in it.
- 25:23Speaker 4: There was cheesy stuff in it.
- 25:25Speaker 7: Yes, but again, I.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Only recently saw the original.
- 25:29Speaker 7: Yeah, we're still going to do an original Fright Night episode,
- 25:33Speaker 7: but we just haven't gotten.
- 25:34Speaker 2: Around to it yet. Am I the only person who
- 25:36Speaker 2: gets a gay vibe from Chris Sarandon? He seems kind
- 25:41Speaker 2: of gay for somebody who is married to Susan Sarandon.
- 25:45Speaker 4: I mean.
- 25:49Speaker 4: Think i've always kind of gotten a gay vibe from
- 25:51Speaker 4: vampires anyway.
- 25:52Speaker 7: Yeah well i mean that there again we could say
- 25:55Speaker 7: this for the whole episode but i mean there's a
- 25:58Speaker 7: weird relationship going on in that movie in particular yeah
- 26:02Speaker 7: right yeah but yeah that's a whole different story but
- 26:06Speaker 7: yeah we talked to chris saran and he's actually really
- 26:08Speaker 7: cool i don't know if i get that in the
- 26:10Speaker 7: real world he seems kind of different well i.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Mean um Dog Day Afternoon.
- 26:17Speaker 7: Yeah, there's definitely, again, in his roles, he, you know.
- 26:23Speaker 4: Prince Humperdinck really could care less about Buttercup.
- 26:26Speaker 7: That's true. He's kind of fancy in that.
- 26:28Speaker 4: He was going for just.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Butter, you know.
- 26:30Speaker 4: He liked that six-fingered man a little too much.
- 26:32Speaker 7: Again, a very odd relationship there, you have to say.
- 26:37Speaker 2: You know I love watching your work.
- 26:39Speaker 7: That's true. So, yeah, he's kind of working on... a
- 26:45Speaker 7: very special list of movies there but.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Man uh what does that six finger imply in terms
- 26:51Speaker 2: of a shocker i don't even want to know.
- 26:55Speaker 7: You don't want to know you can find out the
- 26:58Speaker 7: hard way.
- 26:59Speaker 4: My my kids i recently showed them princess bride eight
- 27:03Speaker 4: and five of the kids they loved it um And
- 27:08Speaker 4: so much so that they even quote lines quite a
- 27:10Speaker 4: bit from it. Anytime on television they see someone kissing,
- 27:14Speaker 4: they'll go, wait, wait, wait. Is this a kissing book?
- 27:18Speaker 4: And I love my kids for that because they've already
- 27:21Speaker 4: caught on to quoting movies. But the DVD skips right
- 27:26Speaker 4: when they're showing the six fingers on his hand when
- 27:30Speaker 4: they've come out of the forest. And my daughter was
- 27:35Speaker 4: just I have to see it. I have to see it.
- 27:38Speaker 4: So we had to get online and find a picture
- 27:40Speaker 4: of what the six fingers looked like because it never
- 27:42Speaker 4: shows it again after that point. So anyway, we can
- 27:46Speaker 4: move on since we've... That's awesome.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Yeah, but the remake is good as the general bullet point.
- 27:53Speaker 7: Fright Night, yeah. And that was sort of what kicked
- 27:57Speaker 7: it off for me because that was early on, like
- 28:00Speaker 7: a week or so ago, and I was like, I
- 28:03Speaker 7: went in expecting to not... Again, I was going in...
- 28:06Speaker 7: I wanted to watch it, and I'd heard pretty decent
- 28:08Speaker 7: things from people. It got a decent response when it
- 28:10Speaker 7: came out, but I went in with such a... Not
- 28:14Speaker 7: even a bad attitude, because I wanted to like it.
- 28:16Speaker 7: I was renting it. I wanted to have a fun
- 28:19Speaker 7: time watching the movie, but there was just so much
- 28:22Speaker 7: working against it. And then to get in there and
- 28:24Speaker 7: actually see that they found a way to do it
- 28:27Speaker 7: in sort of an original way and sort of have
- 28:29Speaker 7: their own spin to it, I thought that was.
- 28:33Speaker 7: Not only impressive as a movie, but it reminded me
- 28:35Speaker 7: that you can do that. So yeah, that's why I
- 28:38Speaker 7: wanted to throw it out there. In general, just kind
- 28:41Speaker 7: of talk about why do a remake? And why do
- 28:47Speaker 7: people keep doing it? And is there a better way
- 28:49Speaker 7: to go about it than sometimes happens?
- 28:52Speaker 4: I think you have to love the original, but at
- 28:55Speaker 4: the same time, not love it too much. I think
- 28:59Speaker 4: sometimes in a remake, you see.
- 29:03Speaker 4: I don't know. I don't necessarily like shot-for-shot remakes. I
- 29:07Speaker 4: like when people can go in and mess things up
- 29:10Speaker 4: and make it different. I don't think you always necessarily
- 29:14Speaker 4: have to update it so that it fits current ideas.
- 29:21Speaker 4: And in fact, I think a movie should always... I
- 29:24Speaker 4: think a director... I'm going to put it on the director,
- 29:28Speaker 4: not a writer. But should always shoot for a film
- 29:31Speaker 4: to be timeless.
- 29:32Speaker 6: Yes.
- 29:33Speaker 4: Not something that sticks out in my mind is making
- 29:37Speaker 4: the cell phone or Facebook or something. along those lines
- 29:41Speaker 4: drive a major part of the movie. It's kind of
- 29:45Speaker 4: like the... What was the Colin Farrell movie? Since we're...
- 29:50Speaker 4: The phone booth.
- 29:51Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 29:51Speaker 4: That he's stuck in the phone... That wouldn't... It's only
- 29:53Speaker 4: less than 10 years old.
- 29:54Speaker 7: Even when it came out, people were like, a phone booth?
- 29:56Speaker 2: Really?
- 29:57Speaker 4: Right.
- 29:57Speaker 6: So.
- 30:00Speaker 4: But anyway, yeah, just in general, I guess before we
- 30:05Speaker 4: get too deep in it, I think they have to
- 30:07Speaker 4: have some love for it, not just in it for, hey,
- 30:09Speaker 4: we could remake this and make money off of it,
- 30:12Speaker 4: but also not love it too much and then not
- 30:14Speaker 4: be willing to let go of a scene or a
- 30:18Speaker 4: segment or, you know.
- 30:20Speaker 7: I think that's what I realized looking at them. It's
- 30:23Speaker 7: like everyone that I liked a lot of times was
- 30:26Speaker 7: not only somebody talented redoing it, But it was somebody
- 30:29Speaker 7: that really seemed like they were interested in the project,
- 30:32Speaker 7: where then I went to the other list that was like,
- 30:35Speaker 7: especially the cheesy horror remakes that they kept doing, and
- 30:37Speaker 7: it's like, when they hand you the Friday the 13th remake,
- 30:41Speaker 7: or the Freddy remake, you know, it's just like, those guys,
- 30:45Speaker 7: you know, it's not like they were they decided they
- 30:48Speaker 7: wanted to do that and they worked on it for years.
- 30:50Speaker 7: It's like the studio just went, Hey, remake this. And
- 30:52Speaker 7: they handed it to them and they went, okay. And
- 30:54Speaker 7: it's a paycheck. And, and that's, I think you can tell,
- 30:57Speaker 7: like you look at those and those are like at best,
- 31:01Speaker 7: you know, I mean, both of those are watchable, but
- 31:03Speaker 7: neither are great. You know, it's like, they're okay. I mean,
- 31:06Speaker 7: they did a decent job of what they had to do. Again,
- 31:09Speaker 7: they were doing a job and they did the job.
- 31:11Speaker 7: They're watchable movies, but neither really feels like there's anything
- 31:15Speaker 7: heart to it, you know, I mean, especially, you know,
- 31:18Speaker 7: I mean, even the old Friday 13th weren't that, but
- 31:21Speaker 7: I mean, like the, the nightmare on Elm street, there was,
- 31:24Speaker 7: you know, when Wes put that together, it felt like
- 31:26Speaker 7: there was something that he, I mean, he himself came
- 31:28Speaker 7: up with the story, came up with the characters. It
- 31:30Speaker 7: did feel like there was something invested. And then you
- 31:32Speaker 7: look at the remake and it's just a bunch of
- 31:35Speaker 7: random kids, you know, it's again, it's taken the, the
- 31:38Speaker 7: hot kids of the moment, which by the way, one
- 31:40Speaker 7: of them is the lead in the, Another movie I
- 31:43Speaker 7: just watched who is hot. Yeah, I'll get back to
- 31:47Speaker 7: that in a minute. But, yeah, you can tell the
- 31:49Speaker 7: difference there that it doesn't have, it just doesn't have
- 31:53Speaker 7: that much vested in it. And somebody didn't put any
- 31:56Speaker 7: heart into it.
- 31:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and then it's just like a marketing ploy because
- 31:59Speaker 2: you almost just want to go see it because you're
- 32:01Speaker 2: invested in a great movie.
- 32:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:03Speaker 2: You know the story. And then you see they're remaking
- 32:06Speaker 2: it and you feel like, I better check that out.
- 32:10Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 32:10Speaker 2: What are they doing to my movie? And so you
- 32:14Speaker 2: feel like you're being played, but you can't help yourself
- 32:17Speaker 2: because you want to see it.
- 32:18Speaker 7: Especially those series.
- 32:19Speaker 2: And you know they're manipulating you. And so the thing
- 32:21Speaker 2: you're looking for is like, are they just doing that?
- 32:25Speaker 2: Or is somebody really interested in this?
- 32:29Speaker 3: You know, I.
- 32:32Speaker 4: Learned a lot with Transformers. I didn't watch the third one.
- 32:36Speaker 4: I watched the first two. And because that was such
- 32:39Speaker 4: a part of who I was back in the mid
- 32:42Speaker 4: 80s or the early 80s, I guess as a kid.
- 32:45Speaker 4: And I was so insulted by the Transformers movies when
- 32:50Speaker 4: they came out. I mean, just truly damaged and insulted.
- 32:54Speaker 4: And it's not necessarily a remake, but it's. In my mind,
- 32:59Speaker 4: it is a remake.
- 33:00Speaker 7: It's revisiting a property that was already... Again, it's the
- 33:04Speaker 7: same thing. It's just taking a brand and slapping something
- 33:07Speaker 7: else on it and handing it to someone.
- 33:09Speaker 4: And the thing I learned was making a remake doesn't change, affect, lessen,
- 33:18Speaker 4: do anything to the original. It's a different movie. It's
- 33:23Speaker 4: a completely separate movie. Even if it's made by the
- 33:26Speaker 4: same actors and the same directors, it's a different movie.
- 33:31Speaker 4: Movies can exist. Companies are in business to make business.
- 33:34Speaker 4: It's my problem for associating the two and not being
- 33:37Speaker 4: willing to let it go, I think. And so I'm
- 33:41Speaker 4: to the point where I'm not going to get upset
- 33:43Speaker 4: by remakes anymore and just hope that, maybe they can
- 33:49Speaker 4: open the door to one, ideally make a great movie
- 33:52Speaker 4: to at least open the door to someone going back
- 33:55Speaker 4: and seeing something that is worthwhile, I suppose. And sometimes
- 34:00Speaker 4: they can really update movie. I mean, really well, the
- 34:03Speaker 4: one that first came to my mind was, um, Cape fear.
- 34:08Speaker 7: That was on my list. Yeah. I was looking through,
- 34:10Speaker 7: I was like, you know, did a great, and again, Scorsese,
- 34:13Speaker 7: I mean, That's what it is. It's like you give
- 34:16Speaker 7: it to somebody not only who is really talented, but,
- 34:19Speaker 7: I mean, I know he went into that, like, loving
- 34:23Speaker 7: that movie and wanting to do... But, again, you look
- 34:26Speaker 7: at what, you know, De Niro's doing in it versus
- 34:29Speaker 7: what Mitchum was doing in it. I mean, it's a
- 34:31Speaker 7: different movie, and it's a different way of approaching... That
- 34:34Speaker 7: same menacing character, but it's a slightly different way of
- 34:37Speaker 7: doing it. And I think, again, it's not just updating
- 34:40Speaker 7: it for the times, which they did, but it also...
- 34:43Speaker 7: puts its own little spin on it and does it
- 34:45Speaker 7: in a different enough way that it's definitely worth watching and,
- 34:49Speaker 7: and kind of holds its own as its own movie,
- 34:52Speaker 7: not just like a copy of the original.
- 34:54Speaker 4: The original.
- 34:54Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 34:55Speaker 2: It's funny after the, watching the, the anarchy, uh, funny games,
- 34:59Speaker 2: twin movies.
- 35:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 35:01Speaker 2: It sort of got me already. I was looking at, Hey,
- 35:04Speaker 2: they're remaking straw dogs.
- 35:06Speaker 10: Yep.
- 35:06Speaker 2: And it seems sort of funny because it's this home invasive,
- 35:10Speaker 2: violent thing. Um, And I went and saw that, and
- 35:14Speaker 2: I just hated it. It was a stupid movie. It
- 35:17Speaker 2: was a waste of time. It had none of the
- 35:19Speaker 2: oomph of the original. I didn't care what happened to anybody.
- 35:26Speaker 2: In the original, there's the rat man. And by the
- 35:29Speaker 2: time you get to the rat man, I just want
- 35:31Speaker 2: to beat that guy to pieces with a tire iron.
- 35:34Speaker 2: In this one, I didn't care. It's like, oh, whatever.
- 35:37Speaker 2: All right. It So it was completely disappointing to me.
- 35:43Speaker 2: But the other one, it seemed like I got into
- 35:46Speaker 2: a vein of remakes from that because we were talking
- 35:51Speaker 2: about the killers in Funny Games. And I have this
- 35:54Speaker 2: thing like sometimes things are so obvious I can't think
- 35:57Speaker 2: of them. And I was trying to make this connection.
- 35:59Speaker 2: It's like there's that pair of killers. And what does
- 36:02Speaker 2: that remind me of? What movie am I thinking of
- 36:05Speaker 2: as the big antecedent for the killers? And, of course,
- 36:09Speaker 2: it was the killers. I was trying to think of
- 36:12Speaker 2: the killers, and I couldn't bring it to mind. It's
- 36:14Speaker 2: like when I was in a writing class once, and
- 36:16Speaker 2: there's this James Joyce short story called Clay. And in it,
- 36:20Speaker 2: they play a guessing game where this girl reaches into
- 36:23Speaker 2: a bag with her eyes closed, and she feels something.
- 36:26Speaker 2: You're supposed to guess what it is. It's this cold, wet,
- 36:29Speaker 2: squishy stuff. And everybody in the class seemed to get
- 36:33Speaker 2: the story. And I don't get it. What is that? cold, wet,
- 36:37Speaker 2: squishy stuff in that story clay.
- 36:40Speaker 4: Right.
- 36:42Speaker 2: You know, eventually it comes to me as I'm about
- 36:44Speaker 2: to say it and then I just back, oh, never mind.
- 36:48Speaker 2: I get it now. But I was thinking of the
- 36:50Speaker 2: movie The Killers because I had seen the 1940s version
- 36:55Speaker 2: and I found that because I knew the short story
- 36:59Speaker 2: and I knew the short story because I went through
- 37:01Speaker 2: this period where I really liked Nabokov and it was
- 37:04Speaker 2: the only Hemingway story he liked. was he liked this story,
- 37:09Speaker 2: The Killers, and I saw the movie. And then I
- 37:11Speaker 2: saw there's a remake, Don Siegel. He did a remake,
- 37:17Speaker 2: and we watched that, and it had Reagan in it.
- 37:20Speaker 2: And it was Reagan's last movie before his political career,
- 37:23Speaker 2: and he played the bad guy. And the remake, it
- 37:27Speaker 2: wasn't even really a remake. It's sort of like a.
- 37:30Speaker 7: It's falling to the left, too.
- 37:33Speaker 2: But I want to plug Wild and Wooly Video because
- 37:36Speaker 2: I went to find it. I find the 40s version.
- 37:41Speaker 2: I can't find the newer version. And the guy says, oh,
- 37:45Speaker 2: it's in the same box the disc comes with, the
- 37:49Speaker 2: 1964 version. I'm like, oh, okay, good. I ought to
- 37:52Speaker 2: learn to read. I would have seen that down here.
- 37:55Speaker 2: And then he said, there's also a 15-minute version by Tarkovsky.
- 38:05Speaker 2: And I never would have found it because it's hidden
- 38:09Speaker 2: in the special features as a discussion of adaptations. And
- 38:16Speaker 2: it was something Tarkovsky, apparently, I don't know much about him,
- 38:21Speaker 2: but he's a big deal director. it was a 19
- 38:26Speaker 2: minute version he and some film students had done in
- 38:30Speaker 2: film school in the fifties in Russia. And it's almost
- 38:35Speaker 2: just exactly the short story dialogue. It's, it's the truest
- 38:42Speaker 2: to the story and it's really pretty good. But one
- 38:47Speaker 2: odd thing about it is the, the protagonist Nick Adams
- 38:51Speaker 2: in the Russian version, um, He wears this kind of
- 38:56Speaker 2: silly cap, and he has a big sweater with a
- 39:00Speaker 2: big neck thing. And I think the final thing is
- 39:04Speaker 2: the belted overalls.
- 39:08Speaker 7: That's a nice look.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Yeah, because Nick Adams is supposed to be like an
- 39:13Speaker 2: everyman kind of guy, sort of a stand-in for him.
- 39:18Speaker 2: Everymen do not wear belted overalls. He was kind of
- 39:21Speaker 2: like a skinny Russian... rerun or something or Urkel or something.
- 39:27Speaker 2: I don't know what this guy was, but all the
- 39:30Speaker 2: rest of it was pretty good. It's definitely worth, if
- 39:34Speaker 2: you rent the twin movies of the killers, it's definitely
- 39:39Speaker 2: worth looking for the little 19-minute versions.
- 39:43Speaker 4: You point something out there, just an aside, the sign
- 39:47Speaker 4: of a good movie rental place employee that yeah that
- 39:53Speaker 4: my god they've seen something i'm interested in and they
- 39:56Speaker 4: know the special features not that that's just that kind
- 39:59Speaker 4: of a resource and i it's too far away for
- 40:01Speaker 4: me to drive and get there yeah all the time
- 40:03Speaker 4: because i'd never return a movie on time but that's
- 40:07Speaker 4: just beautiful that someone knows the special features on a
- 40:11Speaker 4: obscure yeah dvd you know yeah.
- 40:13Speaker 2: And then he was telling me about all the other
- 40:15Speaker 2: movies the director had done he said well he's kind
- 40:17Speaker 2: of a big I know, it's 15 minutes, it sounds silly,
- 40:20Speaker 2: but no, it's really good. And he did Solaris and
- 40:25Speaker 2: a bunch of other movies.
- 40:26Speaker 4: My God, it took me four years to watch the
- 40:28Speaker 4: original Solaris.
- 40:31Speaker 7: That one's on the list. That one's been made like twice,
- 40:34Speaker 7: I think, since then.
- 40:37Speaker 2: But the thing that reminded me of The Killers was
- 40:39Speaker 2: just in that original story, as far as I know,
- 40:43Speaker 2: that was the original of the two guys who have
- 40:46Speaker 2: this kind of, funky patter and it's kind of smart-ass gangster.
- 40:51Speaker 2: They're always saying, like, oh, he's a smart boy. So
- 40:55Speaker 2: what do people do in this town? Oh, they all
- 40:57Speaker 2: come here and get the big dinner. And it's almost
- 41:02Speaker 2: like the guys in Pulp Fiction. It's that pair of killers.
- 41:07Speaker 2: And I think the reason Nabokov liked the story is
- 41:12Speaker 2: is because style is substance in that story in a
- 41:15Speaker 2: way that it usually isn't in Hemingway. It's the ending
- 41:20Speaker 2: of the story is somebody says something and it sounds
- 41:23Speaker 2: vaguely smart ass, like something the killers would have said.
- 41:27Speaker 2: And so it expands from these guys that are killers
- 41:30Speaker 2: to just everything in the world that is thoughtless and,
- 41:34Speaker 2: and just makes you want to die.
- 41:37Speaker 4: I've only ever seen the remake. I, a guy I
- 41:40Speaker 4: worked with, um, who loves movies, but he doesn't see
- 41:45Speaker 4: many newer movies, but he claims that that's his favorite
- 41:49Speaker 4: movie of all time, the remake. And so I saw
- 41:52Speaker 4: it because of the remake.
- 41:56Speaker 2: See?
- 41:56Speaker 7: You never know.
- 41:58Speaker 2: Okay.
- 41:59Speaker 4: And I think it's one of those things where you,
- 42:02Speaker 4: I don't know, people, you tap into something at some
- 42:06Speaker 4: time when they saw it, you know.
- 42:09Speaker 2: I found the remake really frustrating.
- 42:12Speaker 7: There's times when I start to like remakes more than
- 42:15Speaker 7: the original. There are times when it, you know, sometimes
- 42:18Speaker 7: I like them both on the same level and I
- 42:21Speaker 7: just keep them separate. But there's other ones that sort
- 42:23Speaker 7: of move up. The more I watch, you know, one
- 42:25Speaker 7: over the other, I'm going to be like, this actually
- 42:27Speaker 7: kind of did a good job on this one.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Yeah, sure.
- 42:30Speaker 4: I went back and tried to watch the original Ocean's Eleven. Yeah.
- 42:34Speaker 4: That's a piece of cake.
- 42:35Speaker 7: I mean, that's one, I mean... For as silly and
- 42:38Speaker 7: funny as that movie is, it's an improvement over the
- 42:41Speaker 7: other one. Oh, yeah. And that's kind of, again, it's Soderbergh.
- 42:44Speaker 7: So once again, you give it to somebody who's talented
- 42:47Speaker 7: and who obviously liked the old one enough that he
- 42:51Speaker 7: liked the idea of it, but went, well, we can
- 42:52Speaker 7: do something better than that, and look who I can
- 42:55Speaker 7: get to be in this movie.
- 42:57Speaker 4: No, it's purely almost formulaic, the way he puts Ocean
- 43:02Speaker 4: of Eleven together. But it's still fun, and it's pretty.
- 43:06Speaker 4: And it's slick, and it's, you know.
- 43:09Speaker 7: It's almost like a go-to for that kind of movie.
- 43:11Speaker 7: I mean, if somebody's looking for something like that, like,
- 43:14Speaker 7: that's the top of the heap, you know? It's just like,
- 43:16Speaker 7: not only is it fun, you know, and kind of
- 43:19Speaker 7: a fun movie to watch, but it's also well done,
- 43:22Speaker 7: you know? It's got good actors in it, it's, you know,
- 43:24Speaker 7: a good director, and it's, I mean, it's kind of
- 43:26Speaker 7: the best you can go with for that type of thing,
- 43:28Speaker 7: you know? If you just want a fun movie, that
- 43:30Speaker 7: one's a well-put-together fun movie.
- 43:32Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 43:34Speaker 7: Now this, I wanted to get into another sort of
- 43:37Speaker 7: sub category in this one and it leads to one
- 43:39Speaker 7: of the other ones i saw this past week and
- 43:42Speaker 7: the tie-in i had earlier i did see the new
- 43:46Speaker 7: version of the girl with the dragon tattoo oh okay
- 43:50Speaker 7: which the tie-in was and because i sat there the
- 43:52Speaker 7: whole time trying to figure out who this lisbeth girl
- 43:54Speaker 7: like i remember it was a big deal when this
- 43:56Speaker 7: girl got cast and but i'm sitting there going do
- 43:58Speaker 7: i know her for a minute because she's she's really
- 44:00Speaker 7: good at it and i'm just sitting there It's Rooney Mara,
- 44:04Speaker 7: who was the lead girl in the Nightmare on Elm
- 44:06Speaker 7: Street remake, who I remember not being... I mean, she
- 44:09Speaker 7: wasn't bad at that, but again, nobody in that movie
- 44:11Speaker 7: had anything to do, so they were all kind of boring.
- 44:13Speaker 7: So seeing her just totally own up, just step up
- 44:19Speaker 7: and take this movie, and yeah, she's amazing in it.
- 44:23Speaker 7: She's the.
- 44:24Speaker 4: A girl from the Facebook social network.
- 44:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:27Speaker 7: She's the girlfriend. Again, not a huge role there, but
- 44:30Speaker 7: obviously he saw what potential she had because, yeah, he
- 44:33Speaker 7: just kind of gave her this movie.
- 44:35Speaker 4: She's also the heiress, not heiress, but granddaughter of both
- 44:38Speaker 4: the Rooney family, who owns the Steelers, and the Mara family,
- 44:41Speaker 4: who owns the New York Giants. So that's football greatness
- 44:46Speaker 4: right there. And she's named Rooney Mara.
- 44:50Speaker 7: Anyway. So she really didn't need to get the most
- 44:53Speaker 7: coveted job in Hollywood.
- 44:55Speaker 4: Yeah, she's got some money. She's got some money.
- 44:57Speaker 7: It sucks to be the rest of you actresses out
- 44:59Speaker 7: there that were, like, clawing to get your way to
- 45:01Speaker 7: that role. Right. And she stole it up. But she
- 45:04Speaker 7: does an amazing job in it. She really.
- 45:06Speaker 2: That only makes it worse for everyone.
- 45:08Speaker 7: Yeah, I guess so. It would have been... They could
- 45:09Speaker 7: be like, well, she sucks anyway. No, she does a
- 45:13Speaker 7: great job.
- 45:14Speaker 2: But.
- 45:15Speaker 7: And that's my thing. Have you seen the other, the
- 45:18Speaker 7: Swedish version?
- 45:19Speaker 4: I've seen the Swedish version.
- 45:20Speaker 7: Okay, that's going to be my thing. Because, as I
- 45:24Speaker 7: said last time, I waited because I wanted to see
- 45:27Speaker 7: what Fincher was going to do with this one before
- 45:29Speaker 7: watching the Swedish.
- 45:30Speaker 4: It is very much that you're trapped in the environment
- 45:36Speaker 4: of Swedish geography film to begin with. You can feel
- 45:41Speaker 4: the climate. Just in the film itself, which I appreciate.
- 45:48Speaker 4: I'm sure there's a lot of it that's lost in
- 45:50Speaker 4: translation because, you know, that you miss from the having
- 45:56Speaker 4: to read. Yeah. But you get a lot out of...
- 46:02Speaker 4: Let's see, what's the gentleman's name? I forget his name,
- 46:06Speaker 4: but the.
- 46:07Speaker 7: The writer?
- 46:09Speaker 4: Yeah, the guy, not... He... Seems to be... Mikel.
- 46:15Speaker 2: Right.
- 46:16Speaker 4: He kind of carries it for me. She does a
- 46:18Speaker 4: good job of being that character.
- 46:22Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 46:23Speaker 4: But she's just that character. She's not much more than,
- 46:27Speaker 4: I'm going to play this shocking role. Now, I guess
- 46:32Speaker 4: I don't want to handle too much, but there is
- 46:34Speaker 4: one scene that is, you know.
- 46:37Speaker 7: These scenes that everybody kind of... Again, I went in
- 46:40Speaker 7: knowing that scene was there.
- 46:42Speaker 4: It's handled... Pretty well, but it's also pretty hard to watch.
- 46:47Speaker 4: But I'd expect that out of a Swedish film, too. So,
- 46:53Speaker 4: it's good. After seeing it, I thought, I'll never have
- 46:57Speaker 4: to see it again.
- 47:00Speaker 7: That's what you thought. Right.
- 47:01Speaker 4: Oh, okay. And I'll never have to watch the remake.
- 47:07Speaker 7: See, that was what I was thinking. That's what made
- 47:09Speaker 7: me originally want to pose this question, is... when they
- 47:12Speaker 7: do this, turn around and make one again a year
- 47:14Speaker 7: or two later, is it necessary? And I found that
- 47:17Speaker 7: when I was going through, you know, listing different ones,
- 47:19Speaker 7: good or bad, there are ones that I was like,
- 47:22Speaker 7: even if they did it good, sometimes I'm like, but
- 47:24Speaker 7: was it really necessary to make this? So that's almost
- 47:27Speaker 7: because now having seen this one, I'm like, I don't
- 47:31Speaker 7: know that I'm going to get anything out of the original.
- 47:34Speaker 7: that I didn't, I still want to watch it, but
- 47:37Speaker 7: I feel like, again, because you gave it to somebody
- 47:39Speaker 7: who's an amazing director, and that's what I was thrilled, like, even,
- 47:43Speaker 7: you know, of the good stuff I've seen lately, I
- 47:47Speaker 7: went in, I guess I felt like I'd heard so
- 47:50Speaker 7: much about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo that I
- 47:52Speaker 7: just kind of went in, I wanted to see it
- 47:54Speaker 7: because it was Fincher, and because, you know, what I'd
- 47:56Speaker 7: heard about it was good, but I guess I didn't
- 47:58Speaker 7: go in with huge expectations because I felt like I
- 48:00Speaker 7: already knew so much about it. It was, I was
- 48:04Speaker 7: really thrilled with it actually like by the end i
- 48:06Speaker 7: was just i really like.
- 48:08Speaker 4: That movie and it sounds like it's better.
- 48:10Speaker 7: That's and that's what i was thinking i was like
- 48:12Speaker 7: so now it's like what we you know across the
- 48:15Speaker 7: board you would normally say well what's the point why
- 48:17Speaker 7: bother making a remake when they already made this one
- 48:19Speaker 7: just like two years ago but again i feel like
- 48:22Speaker 7: i'm going to be backtracking here and be like almost
- 48:25Speaker 7: let down because what fincher does in this is so
- 48:28Speaker 7: good and and Again, I feel like this one is
- 48:31Speaker 7: going to be more or less the same story with
- 48:33Speaker 7: a lesser budget.
- 48:35Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 48:35Speaker 7: Because there's no way in hell they gave him Fincher money.
- 48:38Speaker 7: And the Fincher one looks so good. And that's what I,
- 48:40Speaker 7: you were saying the environment. Like I think just the,
- 48:44Speaker 7: what Fincher does in this, I felt was just like
- 48:47Speaker 7: that world. Like that little world that Mikel gets thrown
- 48:50Speaker 7: in the middle of. He captures so well, and I
- 48:54Speaker 7: don't think it's a really long movie, and it didn't
- 48:58Speaker 7: feel like it. It didn't feel overly long. What I
- 49:00Speaker 7: felt like was really invested in that little world. Like,
- 49:04Speaker 7: I really, like, by the end of it, you knew
- 49:06Speaker 7: all these characters, and you were, like, the whole little
- 49:09Speaker 7: area where they lived, and all this stuff going on
- 49:12Speaker 7: in this world really, I don't know. He just did
- 49:14Speaker 7: such a good job capturing all of that that I
- 49:18Speaker 7: don't know that, you know, going back that... it's going
- 49:20Speaker 7: to be in there again I'm going to watch it
- 49:22Speaker 7: and see but I feel like now it's working the
- 49:25Speaker 7: other way now it's like the original has next act
- 49:29Speaker 7: against it there the remake did such a good job
- 49:32Speaker 7: that I don't know that yeah which I don't know
- 49:35Speaker 7: I didn't want to say as much as Rooney did
- 49:37Speaker 7: a great job in this one daniel craig's great in
- 49:39Speaker 7: this and i really do want to see him you
- 49:43Speaker 7: know break out of i think he's signed to do
- 49:45Speaker 7: several more bond but i mean he's just now getting
- 49:47Speaker 7: to that point that he can do other movies and
- 49:49Speaker 7: be you know a regular actor and he does a
- 49:52Speaker 7: good job in this i would really like to see
- 49:54Speaker 7: him you know i know he's been in a lot
- 49:55Speaker 7: of other stuff but he's still that's sort of the
- 49:57Speaker 7: go-to whatever you say oh the new bond guy so
- 50:00Speaker 7: it's good to see he really can kind of deliver
- 50:03Speaker 7: something outside of that because he's not at all bond
- 50:05Speaker 7: in these movies.
- 50:08Speaker 4: When you bring that, as far as those recent remakes
- 50:12Speaker 4: and also the same thing, the Let the Right One In.
- 50:16Speaker 7: That was like the next one I was going, when
- 50:18Speaker 7: I said, is it necessary?
- 50:19Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 50:19Speaker 7: That's what I was thinking of.
- 50:20Speaker 4: You know, I thought, because it was right after I
- 50:24Speaker 4: saw the original that I heard, oh, you know, they're
- 50:26Speaker 4: remaking that. Yep, I did too.
- 50:28Speaker 16: And.
- 50:30Speaker 4: I immediately thought, there's no need to remake this movie.
- 50:34Speaker 4: There's nothing that they can add. There's nothing they can
- 50:37Speaker 4: do other than get a bigger audience. There's nothing they
- 50:39Speaker 4: can do. They're different. Pretty good job.
- 50:43Speaker 7: It's a good job. And that was my thing.
- 50:45Speaker 2: Really good job.
- 50:46Speaker 7: I think had I seen the remake first, I would
- 50:49Speaker 7: have loved it just as much because I love Let
- 50:52Speaker 7: the Right One In. Again, when somebody's like, you know,
- 50:55Speaker 7: do you like horror movies? And it's usually really hard
- 50:58Speaker 7: for me to name a current. Like everything I like
- 51:00Speaker 7: is Halloween. You know, everything I like is 20 years
- 51:03Speaker 7: or 30 years. You know, it's like I like old,
- 51:05Speaker 7: what normal people would call old movies now. So it's
- 51:08Speaker 7: like when I try to reach for something recent that
- 51:11Speaker 7: I think is good, that is that level of amazing,
- 51:14Speaker 7: it's let.
- 51:14Speaker 4: The right one in.
- 51:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I like that. I feel the same way.
- 51:19Speaker 7: But, I mean, again, I was kind of expecting them
- 51:22Speaker 7: to do a half-assed version, and then I watched Let
- 51:24Speaker 7: Me In, and I'm just like, damn, it's really good, too.
- 51:28Speaker 7: And it's like the story really doesn't stray at all,
- 51:32Speaker 7: but visually it's it's kind of got its own feel
- 51:35Speaker 7: to it and he does some amazing stuff with it
- 51:38Speaker 7: that it's kind of a shame for this director that
- 51:41Speaker 7: i mean it's almost like nobody's going to give him
- 51:43Speaker 7: a fair shake you know at being a good director
- 51:46Speaker 7: because he does a great job on that one and
- 51:48Speaker 7: he's always going to be like compared to the original
- 51:51Speaker 7: because the original was so big and sort of broke
- 51:54Speaker 7: through into america even without being remade so it is
- 51:58Speaker 7: weird that i mean it's one of the few movies
- 52:00Speaker 7: i can think of that a lot of people like
- 52:02Speaker 7: When it first hit video over here, they were carrying
- 52:05Speaker 7: that at Walmart.
- 52:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 52:07Speaker 7: Which I was shocked by.
- 52:08Speaker 2: I was like, what?
- 52:09Speaker 7: Walmart carries foreign films, especially like a new, you know,
- 52:14Speaker 7: random horror movie that nobody outside of like the movie
- 52:17Speaker 7: geek circles has ever heard of before. But it had
- 52:20Speaker 7: crossed over enough that it had already kind of hit
- 52:23Speaker 7: the mainstream in its own little way. So I don't know.
- 52:26Speaker 7: Those are the ones that I don't know what to
- 52:28Speaker 7: think of. Is it necessary?
- 52:31Speaker 12: It was crazy.
- 52:31Speaker 7: That same thing with the funny games. It's equally as good.
- 52:35Speaker 7: I like it kind of equally, you know, as much.
- 52:40Speaker 7: I had the same problem. I mean, again, it's damn
- 52:42Speaker 7: near the exact same script. It's almost shot for shot. So,
- 52:44Speaker 7: I mean, it's like, pick one, I guess, because they're
- 52:47Speaker 7: the same movie.
- 52:48Speaker 4: You know, after watching the first funny games, I had
- 52:54Speaker 4: no need to watch the remake. To me, it wasn't
- 52:58Speaker 4: going to help or hurt. So I was, I was like, okay, good.
- 53:03Speaker 7: It's out there.
- 53:04Speaker 4: I see what this is. I see what it is
- 53:06Speaker 4: trying to be. And I'm, I'm fine with it. I'm,
- 53:08Speaker 4: or I'm, I'm done with it, I guess. Um, but
- 53:12Speaker 4: the only thing that I think I can throw in
- 53:13Speaker 4: there is, especially from foreign to English is nuance.
- 53:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:19Speaker 4: Nuance in language that you miss from having to read.
- 53:23Speaker 4: You don't know when someone's being sarcastic. You don't know.
- 53:27Speaker 4: I mean, you just don't know. And, um, You can
- 53:33Speaker 4: miss a lot. And you can miss a lot visually, for.
- 53:36Speaker 7: Me, that you have to read. Again, being movie geek
- 53:39Speaker 7: that I am, I want to be watching everything. Again,
- 53:41Speaker 7: I like the visuals.
- 53:42Speaker 4: I want to be able to watch.
- 53:44Speaker 7: But if you're watching too much of it, you're missing
- 53:45Speaker 7: what they just said. So, yeah, it is frustrating in
- 53:49Speaker 7: a way.
- 53:50Speaker 4: So, you know, it's better than, especially if you take
- 53:55Speaker 4: a really good movie, like Let the Right One In,
- 53:57Speaker 4: and you're intending to make a really good movie, not
- 54:00Speaker 4: just capitalize. then it's fine, especially if somebody's going to
- 54:06Speaker 4: put up the money, and you're a competent director, go ahead.
- 54:11Speaker 4: You know, you translate books all the time. Why not
- 54:15Speaker 4: translate a movie?
- 54:16Speaker 7: In a way, that's, I guess, what it is, is
- 54:18Speaker 7: just if they're going to do... I don't know, there's
- 54:20Speaker 7: different ways to go about it. I mean, if you're
- 54:22Speaker 7: just doing that exact same movie again, it's weird, you know,
- 54:28Speaker 7: I mean, it is weird... looking at it from that perspective, especially,
- 54:32Speaker 7: you know, something weird like, I think I did to
- 54:34Speaker 7: remake his own movie the same way. But I mean,
- 54:38Speaker 7: even with the other ones, it is, it is strange
- 54:40Speaker 7: to look at something as, as close as let the
- 54:42Speaker 7: right one in and let me in. And, and I
- 54:45Speaker 7: don't know, it's different than when they try to do
- 54:47Speaker 7: something totally, totally their own. Like, uh, the other one
- 54:50Speaker 7: I was thinking of that's been well received lately was
- 54:52Speaker 7: true grit. It's a different version. It's, it's got a
- 54:56Speaker 7: different feel to it. Definitely.
- 54:58Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 55:00Speaker 2: Those are remakes that are different cases, I think, from
- 55:04Speaker 2: stories that are just classic, timeless stories, and people do
- 55:08Speaker 2: them all the time because that's what you do.
- 55:10Speaker 4: Like Hamlet.
- 55:11Speaker 2: Like Hamlet, or, you know, nobody was going to redo
- 55:15Speaker 2: Henry V until Branagh decided he had the nerve to
- 55:22Speaker 2: do it because there was.
- 55:24Speaker 4: Such a shadow cast from it.
- 55:27Speaker 2: But he definitely did his own thing with it. But yeah,
- 55:30Speaker 2: I think it's new original movies that are getting remade.
- 55:35Speaker 2: And some of them are just for the American audience
- 55:39Speaker 2: because we're a huge audience.
- 55:40Speaker 4: Like The Ring.
- 55:42Speaker 7: That's what I was thinking. We had that huge run
- 55:44Speaker 7: of Asian horror that The Ring kicked off, which, again,
- 55:47Speaker 7: I saw the original Ring and was amazed by it
- 55:51Speaker 7: at the time. that's another, yeah, I would, well, I mean,
- 55:55Speaker 7: that's the thing that you hit the end of that movie.
- 55:57Speaker 7: I was like, Holy shit. Like I was not prepared
- 56:00Speaker 7: for that, that first. And again, that was a bad
- 56:02Speaker 7: VHS version that I think Misty bought at a convention.
- 56:06Speaker 7: You know, this was like 12 years or, you know,
- 56:09Speaker 7: it's been a good 10 years or more since that happened.
- 56:11Speaker 7: So it's like that found its way to the underground
- 56:15Speaker 7: in America. And it already sort of picked up a
- 56:17Speaker 7: little bit, but, The thing is, they made that remake.
- 56:20Speaker 7: It's a good movie, too. I was surprised. Again, went
- 56:24Speaker 7: in expecting it to be a bad, hacky remake, and
- 56:28Speaker 7: they did a good job on that. So you look at,
- 56:31Speaker 7: they started off doing it pretty well. I think it's
- 56:34Speaker 7: the next wave that kept, you know, the grudge is okay.
- 56:37Speaker 7: They did a decent job. They did the sequel, which
- 56:40Speaker 7: I don't know if everybody needed, but then you start
- 56:42Speaker 7: looking at, like, the eye, or shutter, or mirrors, or pulse,
- 56:47Speaker 7: or All these other Asian movies that they kind of
- 56:49Speaker 7: sort of.
- 56:50Speaker 4: When you start talking about that, there's been a lot.
- 56:51Speaker 7: Which I, like, pulse a little more than most people. That's, like,
- 56:54Speaker 7: the low end of the list.
- 56:55Speaker 4: Everybody hated that one.
- 56:57Speaker 7: But, yeah, nobody... I mean, the more it went on,
- 56:59Speaker 7: it's like nobody really wanted those. So it's like, I
- 57:02Speaker 7: don't know who was okaying that, because I guess the
- 57:05Speaker 7: ring made so much money, they were just like, oh,
- 57:07Speaker 7: any Asian horror movie will do. So, you know, they
- 57:10Speaker 7: were giving it, again, to anybody.
- 57:11Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 57:12Speaker 7: Just here, go make this movie.
- 57:14Speaker 2: Yeah, trend spotters, they go, this is hot now, this
- 57:17Speaker 2: is what we're going to do.
- 57:18Speaker 7: Jump on that bandwagon.
- 57:19Speaker 4: They're waiting for the next Japanese movie to come out
- 57:22Speaker 4: so they can.
- 57:23Speaker 2: Make another one.
- 57:23Speaker 9: No.
- 57:24Speaker 4: What about, okay, let's say then, you know, that's not needed.
- 57:28Speaker 4: What if somebody like Fincher was handed.
- 57:32Speaker 2: Battle Royale?
- 57:34Speaker 7: That's rough.
- 57:35Speaker 4: I mean, would that be.
- 57:37Speaker 7: Again, if anybody could do it, you'd get a good
- 57:39Speaker 7: shot there. Yeah.
- 57:40Speaker 6: But.
- 57:41Speaker 7: That one's such a weird one, though, because I don't
- 57:44Speaker 7: know that you could do it in America. Like, I
- 57:47Speaker 7: don't know that our audiences would put up with what's
- 57:51Speaker 7: going to go on on screen. I don't know that
- 57:52Speaker 7: any studio would get behind the original way that that
- 57:56Speaker 7: story works.
- 57:56Speaker 2: I don't know that our kids look enough alike. Well,
- 58:02Speaker 2: I'm sorry, that's part of the thing of the movie. Right.
- 58:05Speaker 2: It's these, you know, these Asian kids, and they all
- 58:08Speaker 2: kind of look alike, and there's... And you go through
- 58:11Speaker 2: a bunch of them really fast.
- 58:13Speaker 4: Wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 58:15Speaker 8: Part of the charm of the movie is it almost
- 58:18Speaker 8: has like a folk art weirdness that like in a
- 58:23Speaker 8: way it would seem like such exploitation violence, but it
- 58:28Speaker 8: doesn't because it's like weird in a way that's convincing.
- 58:33Speaker 2: Like an untrained painter can be really convincing.
- 58:37Speaker 8: And it has those odd epilogues at the end.
- 58:42Speaker 2: Who does two or three random weird epilogues at the
- 58:45Speaker 2: end of a movie?
- 58:46Speaker 8: And also, the translation of the subtitle seems to go
- 58:51Speaker 8: awry suddenly at the very end.
- 58:54Speaker 2: All of a sudden, nothing makes any sense. People are
- 58:57Speaker 2: saying stuff and you're going, what are they trying to say?
- 59:01Speaker 4: I attributed that to me watching it online. You know,
- 59:05Speaker 4: I was like, OK, this because I had to stop
- 59:08Speaker 4: and restart it a couple of times. And, you know,
- 59:10Speaker 4: I think because I was thinking about this when you
- 59:14Speaker 4: brought up the remakes. I think once the Hunger Games
- 59:18Speaker 4: comes out now, because that's accepted and that's a nasty idea.
- 59:25Speaker 4: The whole thing. That it's this popular, that something like
- 59:29Speaker 4: this is out there, and it's almost, what a heartwarming movie.
- 59:33Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying? No, this is horrible! So,
- 59:39Speaker 4: then why couldn't you then sneak in?
- 59:42Speaker 7: I think, again, I think there's... And sometimes you can,
- 59:46Speaker 7: because I thought that with, again, going back to Funny Games...
- 59:52Speaker 7: Like when I watched the original one, as soon as
- 59:54Speaker 7: it was over, I was like, okay, I need to
- 59:56Speaker 7: go get the American one because I couldn't imagine them
- 1:00:00Speaker 7: doing that movie again exactly like it was and having
- 1:00:03Speaker 7: it play for American audiences because our movies don't do that.
- 1:00:08Speaker 7: We don't set them up like that. We don't have
- 1:00:11Speaker 7: the weird things going on like that, and we definitely
- 1:00:14Speaker 7: don't end them like that. So I expected it to
- 1:00:17Speaker 7: be a cheesy Hollywood version, and they would have changed something.
- 1:00:21Speaker 7: Which it wasn't, but at the same time, maybe that's
- 1:00:24Speaker 7: why it didn't go over. Like I said last time,
- 1:00:26Speaker 7: nobody paid any attention when that came out. And maybe
- 1:00:29Speaker 7: that's why. Maybe the few people saw it and went,
- 1:00:32Speaker 7: the hell was that? And like, word got out and
- 1:00:35Speaker 7: nobody else touched it after that. So it's kind of
- 1:00:39Speaker 7: that same thing. I don't know. I mean, you could almost,
- 1:00:41Speaker 7: if they got that one in, I mean, it's not
- 1:00:43Speaker 7: quite as... violent as Battle Royale is and would be
- 1:00:47Speaker 7: if we tried to remake it, but.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: You know what? You could.
- 1:00:49Speaker 7: I mean, there's some tone things that slip through sometimes.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: But Battle Royale doesn't feel as terribly violent.
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: No, it's cartoonish.
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: Because you don't really have a lot of time to
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: get to know.
- 1:01:02Speaker 7: I don't... See, I had the exact opposite thing. Like,
- 1:01:05Speaker 7: to me, you were talking about the people all kind
- 1:01:07Speaker 7: of being... Like, I was surprised how much with that
- 1:01:10Speaker 7: huge cast, how many of them I... got attached to
- 1:01:14Speaker 7: very quickly and how much you identified with them and
- 1:01:18Speaker 7: you really were kind of saddened when you may have
- 1:01:21Speaker 7: only had a couple scenes with them, but I can't
- 1:01:23Speaker 7: believe they killed her off already. I was surprised.
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: They killed off all of the Transformers in the original Transformers,
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: except for fucking Bumblebee.
- 1:01:32Speaker 7: You're obsessed with the Transformers.
- 1:01:34Speaker 14: But that was 1986, and you saw them getting their
- 1:01:40Speaker 14: robot hearts ripped out.
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: Of them in the first scene, all of them, and
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: you saw a theater full of 10-year-olds just almost weeping themselves,
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: but then they went and saw it again.
- 1:01:56Speaker 7: Was that made for American audiences? Oh, yeah. I thought
- 1:02:01Speaker 7: it was.
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: I couldn't remember where it came from. And it was all,
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: they did it all so they could release the next
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: wave of figures that you'd have to go out and buy.
- 1:02:10Speaker 7: Of course. That's understandable.
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: But, you know, that was 30 years ago, and it played,
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: and it can still, I don't know. I think, I mean,
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: you see in Harry Potter movie, characters that you love,
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: even kids, die.
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:27Speaker 7: And we'll allow it.
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: I just think we're wearing the edges off of that.
- 1:02:33Speaker 7: It's like we're kind of wearing down the American audience
- 1:02:36Speaker 7: that has been very set in what they wanted from
- 1:02:39Speaker 7: a movie. And you couldn't go too far one way
- 1:02:42Speaker 7: or the other. It had to be pretty run-of-the-mill and safe.
- 1:02:45Speaker 7: And we're getting to the point we can get away
- 1:02:48Speaker 7: with a little more. But still, it's not quite what
- 1:02:51Speaker 7: some of the stuff they throw out there across the
- 1:02:54Speaker 7: sea is.
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: I guess we're kind of away from the remakes thing
- 1:03:00Speaker 4: a little bit.
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: I don't know. It's kind of all remake-y in a way.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: When you start thinking about remakes, I mean, it's kind
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: of similar to... I mean, you have to draw a
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: line between the experience of watching a remade movie of
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: a story that you know from another movie, or you
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: may have read the book and then you see the movie.
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: Or you may see the exact same movie 20 years
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: later that you saw before, and it's like a remake
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: because you react differently.
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: I've had that late at night.
- 1:03:36Speaker 7: I was like, hey, I'm... No.
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: Hey, I.
- 1:03:38Speaker 7: No.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: Or sometimes you're scared to watch a movie that you
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: really love because.
- 1:03:43Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: When I was going to watch, and this was Don
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: Siegel again... I loved the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers,
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: and I didn't want to see the remakes.
- 1:03:54Speaker 14: Right.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: But I wanted to watch it with my wife. She'd
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: never seen it, and I'm like, you've never seen it?
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: Were you raised by wolves? What happened? But I made
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: her watch it, and I was a little nervous about it,
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: but it's like, no, it held up.
- 1:04:07Speaker 7: That was on my list. It held up. That's one
- 1:04:09Speaker 7: that I think almost... Well, I don't know that it
- 1:04:12Speaker 7: does it better. It does something different with it.
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: Like, it takes.
- 1:04:15Speaker 7: what was going on in the time period of the
- 1:04:18Speaker 7: first one, and lets that sort of exist in the
- 1:04:20Speaker 7: first one. And then that one has its own 70s
- 1:04:23Speaker 7: feel to it, and it feels like what was going
- 1:04:26Speaker 7: on in the world there. So it comes up with
- 1:04:28Speaker 7: an entirely different way to look at the whole thing
- 1:04:32Speaker 7: that's going on.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: In that movie. Yeah, I was just talking about just
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: watching the original again.
- 1:04:38Speaker 7: And it holds up in its own way, but it's
- 1:04:40Speaker 7: got a very different feel to it. But the 78
- 1:04:43Speaker 7: version is great, and I was surprised how much I
- 1:04:47Speaker 7: liked that one.
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: See, I love the original in a way that I
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: can't accept the 70s one. To me, it's like a
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: pod replicant of the first one. It doesn't have whatever
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: that spark in the eye or that, you know, it's
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: like he looks the same, and there's just something different.
- 1:05:10Speaker 7: That's a lot of these remakes, actually.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, well, it depends what you're looking for in it,
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: I guess. I mean, it can be a good movie,
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: but if it's not what you want it to be,
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: you're not going to be.
- 1:05:22Speaker 15: I guess.
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: Maybe it depends on how attached you are to whatever
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: it was in the movie and when you saw it,
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: what stage of development you're in. Like, you guys know
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: all this 80s stuff that I didn't watch anything during
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: those years. I don't know what I was doing in
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: those years.
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: I didn't see any of that stuff.
- 1:05:40Speaker 7: I don't want to imagine.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: I think I started seeing TV again, like sort of
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: midway into NYPD Blue was when I got interested in
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: TV again.
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: I didn't watch that kind of stuff when.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: I was that age.
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: What do you all feel about remaking the thing?
- 1:06:02Speaker 7: See, that was what I was going... I thought that
- 1:06:04Speaker 7: was actually a good lead-in, was the Invasion of the
- 1:06:05Speaker 7: Body Snatchers, because it's kind of that same... It's a
- 1:06:09Speaker 7: little older. The original thing is a little older than
- 1:06:12Speaker 7: Invasion of the Body Snatchers. But to me, I think
- 1:06:15Speaker 7: that's almost my go-to. Anytime anybody's totally condemning the whole
- 1:06:19Speaker 7: idea of remakes, I'm like, thing's a remake. And the thing,
- 1:06:24Speaker 7: to me, is one of the best movies ever made.
- 1:06:26Speaker 7: It's the top of my list anyway. It's right up there.
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: You know what the common thread here of all the
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: remakes that were like, but that works, but that works.
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: Every single one is a competent, good actor or director.
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: Excuse me. Every single one of them is a damn
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: fine director has remade a movie. And that might just
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: be the common one. Because the new thing, I'm not
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: so sure about.
- 1:06:51Speaker 7: I haven't seen it yet. Again, I heard it.
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: I haven't either. I've just seen trailers of it, and
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: I'm afraid.
- 1:06:57Speaker 7: But I heard kind of the same thing. It's like, well,
- 1:06:59Speaker 7: it was kind of my thing with the one earlier.
- 1:07:02Speaker 7: It was like, well, it's fine. It's okay. You can
- 1:07:05Speaker 7: watch it. But, I mean, it's not going to be
- 1:07:07Speaker 7: what the Carpenter version is. The other one, they kind
- 1:07:12Speaker 7: of had that.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: It was like my feeling about the Lolita version. There
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: were a lot of things that were good in it.
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: The girl was a great, she did a great performance. And,
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: I don't know, I didn't like just the idea of
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: Jeremy Irons. I agreed with him. He's sort of done
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: the European weirdo already. It was too right for the part.
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: But the thing that got me was just in the narration,
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: early on he said when he was a kid, he
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: wanted to be a spy. I read the book. He
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: wanted to be a famous spy. If you can't, why
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: even do it?
- 1:07:52Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: I was done with it then. I could never get
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: past that point of why wouldn't you do the line right?
- 1:07:59Speaker 7: That's one of the ones I was referencing earlier that
- 1:08:03Speaker 7: I love the original, the Kubrick one, when I first
- 1:08:06Speaker 7: saw it. I've seen it at least once since then,
- 1:08:11Speaker 7: but I've come to like the remake almost more I
- 1:08:15Speaker 7: just like the relationship. It feels like there's some stakes there.
- 1:08:19Speaker 7: It feels real. It feels like there's something going on
- 1:08:22Speaker 7: between the two of them where the first one, and
- 1:08:24Speaker 7: maybe it was just society at the time. Maybe you
- 1:08:26Speaker 7: couldn't have them relating in a realistic way.
- 1:08:30Speaker 8: Almost.
- 1:08:30Speaker 7: Maybe it was just something with that time period that
- 1:08:33Speaker 7: kind of stopped them, or maybe it was a specific
- 1:08:35Speaker 7: choice by Kubrick. I don't know, but. As good as
- 1:08:39Speaker 7: a lot of the stuff is in that one, I
- 1:08:41Speaker 7: think I became a little more attached to the storyline
- 1:08:44Speaker 7: in the remake, and that's what kind of put it
- 1:08:46Speaker 7: over the top for me. I think I like that
- 1:08:49Speaker 7: relationship more in the remake, and it kind of makes
- 1:08:52Speaker 7: me like the remake more, which is sacrilege, I guess,
- 1:08:56Speaker 7: to like a remake more and to like it more
- 1:08:58Speaker 7: than a Kubrick film.
- 1:08:59Speaker 14: Right.
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: Were a few things I liked about the musical.
- 1:09:04Speaker 7: Again, thanks to you, I now have a version of
- 1:09:06Speaker 7: the musical, and it's pretty damn catchy, let me say.
- 1:09:09Speaker 7: And yet, almost more mean-spirited, definitely more mean-spirited than the Kubrick.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: It's harsh. It's harsh. And the mom in it, oh,
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: it just kills you. I mean, she's so real. I
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: didn't even feel it that much in the book. It's
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: like she's there, but oh, God, what an awful author.
- 1:09:32Speaker 4: Speaking of musicals and remakes, Little Shop of Horrors.
- 1:09:36Speaker 7: That's true.
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: There's a remake that.
- 1:09:38Speaker 7: And there's one going in an entirely different direction.
- 1:09:43Speaker 17: Well, and speaking of remaking... I had to remake a
- 1:09:47Speaker 17: short film that I saw on YouTube. And it's just
- 1:09:50Speaker 17: that thing of, like, you see something and there is
- 1:09:53Speaker 17: something definitely wrong with it.
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: And you just want to fix it.
- 1:09:57Speaker 7: There's a lot of that on the Internet.
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: There's a guy on YouTube named Ukulele Mike. All right.
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: And he's kind of like Wilfred Brimley, only more so. Wow.
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: And he has this video where he's teaching people how
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: to play in this remake, too. somewhere over the rainbow,
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: the way the Polynesian guy does the ukulele version. And,
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: you know, ukulele's an easy instrument. It's something a lot
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: of beginners are going to want to do. And he
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: charts the chords, and it's super easy, except he draws
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: out this impossible E minor chord. There's no way anybody's
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: going to be able to do it.
- 1:10:37Speaker 15: And he doesn't do it. He does it the same
- 1:10:41Speaker 15: easy way. But he's teaching people. He's like, here, I'll
- 1:10:45Speaker 15: show you how to do this song. Here's the C chord.
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: It's real easy. Now you do this, and you've got
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: to put your pinky up here and cram this in.
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: And it just angered me so much. Why would you
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: go out of your way to make an instructional video
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: that's just going to frustrate people? And if I could
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: find him. If I see this guy on the street,
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: there's going to be trouble. So I had to make
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: a little video and show how you do that. It's
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: really not that hard. And I had to post it online.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: I'm going to have to look up Fred Miller's.
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: Over the Rainbow.
- 1:11:17Speaker 7: Yeah, we're going to have to find those now.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: I don't do the whole thing. I just do, okay,
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: he gives you the C. Then he tells you to
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: do these four fingers. It's the only chord in the
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: whole song where you have to use all four fingers.
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: You have to cram your pinky up there. Why? When
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: the chord is just like this.
- 1:11:34Speaker 7: Are you specifically calling him out by name within the video?
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: I'm calling him out by name, yeah.
- 1:11:39Speaker 7: That's awesome.
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: It's ukulele mic.
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: This is bullshit, man.
- 1:11:43Speaker 7: That's awesome. Nice.
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 1:11:47Speaker 4: But that's the inspiration.
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: That's one kind of inspiration to do a remake, is
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: there's just something wrong.
- 1:11:54Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe you're just pissed off at the director, and
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: you're like, why did you do this when you could
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: have done it?
- 1:11:59Speaker 12: Well, there are, I mean, there are, again, getting into
- 1:12:02Speaker 12: ones that improve upon or do something above and beyond
- 1:12:06Speaker 12: what the other one did, kind of like The Thing did,
- 1:12:08Speaker 12: another one from kind of that same.
- 1:12:10Speaker 7: Era, The Fly. Yeah.
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:13Speaker 7: That's a very different movie. But, I mean, even horror fans,
- 1:12:18Speaker 7: old school horror fans will be like, The Fly is
- 1:12:20Speaker 7: not an amazing movie. You're kind of attached to it
- 1:12:23Speaker 7: because it's Vincent Price. And everybody loves Vincent Price. I mean,
- 1:12:26Speaker 7: you kind of have to like it on that level.
- 1:12:28Speaker 7: But it's sort of a cheesy horror movie. Whereas you
- 1:12:30Speaker 7: get Cronenberg come along. That's a different movie that he
- 1:12:34Speaker 7: puts together. Yeah.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: I don't know if The Fly was really sort of
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: the beginning of camp. Like, at that ending, it's like,
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: were they really, were they trying to be funny? Were they,
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:12:48Speaker 7: No, no. It's really sad.
- 1:12:52Speaker 4: I can't stomach Goldblum.
- 1:12:55Speaker 7: That's his most useful, really.
- 1:12:57Speaker 5: It is.
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: And that's the sad part is that's his best. The
- 1:13:01Speaker 4: rest of his career is just a train wreck.
- 1:13:03Speaker 7: He's just Goldblum in everything. He just doesn't do anything.
- 1:13:06Speaker 7: Especially once you hit the 90s. He's just playing that guy.
- 1:13:10Speaker 7: He just shows up with his Goldblum car and he's like, alright,
- 1:13:14Speaker 7: insert this in wherever you need it in the movie.
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: Is he clueless?
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: Is he genius?
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: Or is he just an ass?
- 1:13:22Speaker 7: At some point, I need to say he must go faster.
- 1:13:24Speaker 7: That's all I'm going to say.
- 1:13:26Speaker 4: It just and so I don't know I can't um
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: he just annoys the crap out of me I really.
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: Loved him as the big bad wolf in the three
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: little pigs fairy tale theater that's my favorite thing he
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: ever did he said something like no I'm just saying
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: nature finds no that was Jurassic Park he said uh
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: Billy Crystal was one of the three little pigs and
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: uh And he said, not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin.
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: And Jeff Goldblum said, chinny-chin-chin, you keep saying that. What
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: is that? What does that mean?
- 1:14:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:14:06Speaker 7: That's very Jeff Goldblum-y, I suppose.
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: Like I said, genius, idiot, or ass. I don't know
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: what it is, but it might be all three.
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: Nice.
- 1:14:21Speaker 7: But yeah, I don't know. We had that kind of
- 1:14:23Speaker 7: run there in the 80s where I was trying to
- 1:14:26Speaker 7: think of The Blob, which I just finally re-watched it.
- 1:14:29Speaker 7: And again, that's on the list. We're going to do
- 1:14:31Speaker 7: a whole episode on that one. But did something different.
- 1:14:34Speaker 7: And I love the original Blob, but they found a
- 1:14:37Speaker 7: different way to do it in the remake.
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: Oh, and then going back to the funny games thing,
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: King Kong. I remember Tarantino saying... Did it have the
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: racial subtext to a friend of his? And he said, no. Well,
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: then what is it? Then it's just a big monkey.
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: Which is what we want.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: And you know what?
- 1:14:59Speaker 4: That's what that movie is.
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: It's big.
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: But the thing that I got from it, like very
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: early on, she's a dancer. She's an entertainer. And there's
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: some guy in the audience, a shot of this big
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: ape-like guy just sitting out there laughing at the cabaret stuff.
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: And he reminds me of King Kong. And so later
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: when the ape comes along and she performs for him,
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: she sort of charms him, there's something going on with
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: her that I think is what made her want to
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: do the Funny Games movie.
- 1:15:31Speaker 7: There's just something.
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: About the relationship to the idea of a monstrous audience.
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: Because in the end, and I was trying to work
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: out what I thought of that movie and I couldn't
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: quite get it together, but I think I can understand
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: it as a commentary, and it's very masterfully done. But
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: for me, it doesn't really work as a movie.
- 1:15:52Speaker 7: See, I was making the list, and I was like,
- 1:15:54Speaker 7: I got the King Kong, and I went, it kind
- 1:15:56Speaker 7: of falls on both lists. On the one hand, it's what,
- 1:16:01Speaker 7: I mean, again, visually, it's amazing. It's a competent director.
- 1:16:04Speaker 7: He does some great stuff. This was also the point
- 1:16:07Speaker 7: in his career where he forgot how to edit. It
- 1:16:10Speaker 7: came from those Lord of the Rings movies and they're
- 1:16:13Speaker 7: three hours long or six hours on the DVD.
- 1:16:16Speaker 4: I want a 12 hour cut of the two towers.
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:16:21Speaker 7: So by the time he got to King Kong, I
- 1:16:23Speaker 7: guess everybody had already said, yeah, give us more. So
- 1:16:26Speaker 7: he's like, okay, we can have a four hour dinosaur
- 1:16:29Speaker 7: running portion and they can like spend 20 minutes on
- 1:16:33Speaker 7: the boat going through icebergs or whatever the hell they
- 1:16:36Speaker 7: were doing. I was just like, there's that. It's like
- 1:16:38Speaker 7: an hour and a half before they get to the island.
- 1:16:40Speaker 7: I'm like, what is going on? So, yeah, there's so
- 1:16:43Speaker 7: much of that.
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: Maybe they could have got out and walked for a while.
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: Then the trees could have walked.
- 1:16:48Speaker 7: I don't know. See, I'm probably one of the few
- 1:16:50Speaker 7: people in the world, and I've already gone on a
- 1:16:52Speaker 7: weird list with my... my remake of Lolita Comet, but
- 1:16:56Speaker 7: now I'm also one of the few people that really
- 1:16:58Speaker 7: likes the 70s version of King Kong. Ah. The Dino
- 1:17:01Speaker 7: De Laurentiis version.
- 1:17:03Speaker 12: Oh, yeah.
- 1:17:03Speaker 7: The big, hemmy Jeff Bridges.
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I.
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:17:07Speaker 7: It's, I mean, it is cheesy, but again, it's one
- 1:17:10Speaker 7: of those that, like you said earlier, maybe it's how
- 1:17:12Speaker 7: you were attached to it the first time you saw it. Again,
- 1:17:15Speaker 7: that was just me as a kid thinking King Kong
- 1:17:17Speaker 7: was awesome and watching a monkey climb up the side
- 1:17:20Speaker 7: of the World Trade Center.
- 1:17:22Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:17:22Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:17:22Speaker 7: Like that again at the time.
- 1:17:24Speaker 18: Was awesome what's her name um that's galang yeah yeah
- 1:17:29Speaker 18: yeah again i it has its issues i know a
- 1:17:33Speaker 18: lot of people like to hate.
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: That one but yeah when you have a newly built
- 1:17:39Speaker 4: world trade center you kind of got to put.
- 1:17:40Speaker 7: A monkey on it well you can say that exactly
- 1:17:43Speaker 7: with the new mission impossible you've got a new tallest
- 1:17:47Speaker 7: building in the world you got to put a monkey
- 1:17:49Speaker 7: or tom cruise one.
- 1:17:50Speaker 4: Or the other or both Oh, but the best 70s
- 1:17:55Speaker 4: movie featuring a large primate.
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: Is Thing with Two Heads.
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: Your favorite. Right. Yeah. The two-headed gorilla. No, there's a
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: movie that just came to my mind, a remake, that
- 1:18:12Speaker 4: I don't know why I'm not, I just lost it.
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: It's The Killers.
- 1:18:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:18:18Speaker 7: I can do the other one of mine. The other
- 1:18:20Speaker 7: one that sort of inspired this, I went back and
- 1:18:23Speaker 7: watched the Black Christmas remake after doing the whole episode
- 1:18:28Speaker 7: on the real Black Christmas. In my mind. And yeah,
- 1:18:33Speaker 7: it falls into that category. And I think that one
- 1:18:36Speaker 7: suffered a little bit because I'd heard from a lot
- 1:18:39Speaker 7: of people that, oh, the remake's actually pretty good. It's
- 1:18:41Speaker 7: pretty decent. I mean, again, it didn't get the respect
- 1:18:44Speaker 7: that the original one got, but everybody's like, oh, it's
- 1:18:46Speaker 7: pretty good. I was really let down by it.
- 1:18:49Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:18:50Speaker 7: Really, and again, that whole episode, Marlena kept talking about
- 1:18:53Speaker 7: some yellow guy in the attic craziness that we were
- 1:18:56Speaker 7: just assuming she was drunk at that point. It's in
- 1:18:59Speaker 7: that movie. It is that remake, but I think this
- 1:19:01Speaker 7: is very telling because Marlena had actually seen the remake
- 1:19:05Speaker 7: and didn't remember that's what it was. Misty had the
- 1:19:08Speaker 7: DVD because that's whose I watched. I borrowed it from her.
- 1:19:12Speaker 7: She obviously had seen it too. Neither of them could
- 1:19:15Speaker 7: remember that that's the movie it was in. That's how
- 1:19:17Speaker 7: forgettable this movie is. By the time I was done,
- 1:19:20Speaker 7: I was like, there's nothing really useful in this as
- 1:19:23Speaker 7: far as I'm concerned.
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: That's what happened to me with Straw Dogs. A few
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: days later, it's like, Oh, yeah, I saw that. Yeah. Wow,
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: where'd that go?
- 1:19:32Speaker 7: Yeah, it's just so forgettable. And they put all this crazy...
- 1:19:37Speaker 7: They almost pull a Halloween, speaking of other bad horror remakes,
- 1:19:40Speaker 7: they almost do a ton of backstory on who the
- 1:19:44Speaker 7: killer is and what sort... And, like, not just give
- 1:19:49Speaker 7: you backstory, but make up all kinds of other crazy shit.
- 1:19:52Speaker 4: Halloween is the... the epitome of what I mentioned earlier
- 1:19:57Speaker 4: of loving it too much.
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:19:59Speaker 4: He was too invested in Halloween and he wanted to
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: make it perfect.
- 1:20:04Speaker 7: I've said before.
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: What about that psycho?
- 1:20:06Speaker 7: Oh God. See, that's the one I was going to say.
- 1:20:11Speaker 7: That almost goes against this rule because there is a
- 1:20:14Speaker 7: talented director and he obviously had at least a little
- 1:20:19Speaker 7: bit of interest in it. I mean, I don't know
- 1:20:21Speaker 7: if it was his idea or they came to him
- 1:20:23Speaker 7: with it, but Either way, I'm just like, first of all,
- 1:20:25Speaker 7: you should have said no. But I don't know. There's
- 1:20:28Speaker 7: just like, that is such a useless movie.
- 1:20:31Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:20:32Speaker 7: I mean, it's all these other ones I'm saying. It
- 1:20:34Speaker 7: doesn't need to exist.
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: It has to come up in this discussion.
- 1:20:38Speaker 7: Well, it was, yeah.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: Because that was a shocking event.
- 1:20:40Speaker 7: And it doesn't, I don't know.
- 1:20:42Speaker 4: It's a train wreck.
- 1:20:44Speaker 7: But it makes no sense, really, because it shouldn't be
- 1:20:47Speaker 7: a train wreck, because it's almost the same thing as
- 1:20:51Speaker 7: Funny Games. It's almost shot for shot. It's almost dialogue exact.
- 1:20:55Speaker 7: There's one or two changes to the dialogue, which is
- 1:20:58Speaker 7: weird for a movie as old as it is, but
- 1:21:00Speaker 7: it's very little done, and how does this one suffer
- 1:21:04Speaker 7: so badly versus the original? I mean, granted, it's Hitchcock.
- 1:21:10Speaker 7: You can't mess with Hitchcock, but at the same time,
- 1:21:14Speaker 7: It's not like they gave it to a hack. I mean,
- 1:21:15Speaker 7: this guy had been doing movies for a good career
- 1:21:18Speaker 7: before that and has done decent stuff. Yeah, he's done
- 1:21:21Speaker 7: decent stuff since then. So it's like he's a talented guy.
- 1:21:25Speaker 7: How it came to be as bad as it did,
- 1:21:27Speaker 7: I still don't even understand. I can't quite put a
- 1:21:30Speaker 7: pin in it what is so wrong about that movie.
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: But it's wrong.
- 1:21:34Speaker 7: It's just something wrong about it. I don't know.
- 1:21:41Speaker 4: I was thinking of some movie that I was going
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: to bring up, but I can't.
- 1:21:46Speaker 7: There's a bunch of them. Another one that I've gone to.
- 1:21:49Speaker 7: Go ahead.
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: The one that I had seen, an older movie that
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: I had seen, the original, and specifically saw it as
- 1:21:58Speaker 4: a result of the original, and it blew it away
- 1:22:00Speaker 4: as far as I'm concerned. It's 310 to Yuma. Oh, yeah.
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: That's a great little movie.
- 1:22:05Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: The remake is such, it really makes you feel like
- 1:22:12Speaker 4: I have to do this for my family. There's no
- 1:22:15Speaker 4: other choice. I've got to be this person for the
- 1:22:19Speaker 4: next 24 hours or whatever. And it really makes you
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: feel like you're really there.
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: The little villain sidekick guy in that movie is amazing.
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: It's one of those guys that you know the actor.
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and I've seen him some other things and thought,
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: where do I know that guy from? And why is
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: he so good at that? And I hate that guy.
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: You know, you just see him and you're like, yeah.
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: And then you look him up and it's like, it's
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: the guy from 310 to Yuma. He's amazing.
- 1:22:51Speaker 7: I love to hate that guy.
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, he's really intense.
- 1:22:57Speaker 7: I was trying to think the other ones, like recently, again,
- 1:23:00Speaker 7: of my go-to, yeah, but you got this, to throw
- 1:23:03Speaker 7: it off, Dawn of the Dead. The remake of Dawn
- 1:23:06Speaker 7: of the Dead is great. And I love the original,
- 1:23:08Speaker 7: but it found a way to do something different and
- 1:23:12Speaker 7: it's it's not i'm still a little attached to that
- 1:23:16Speaker 7: original one it's got it's got some really cool again
- 1:23:18Speaker 7: it's got cheesy effects and some some cheesy stuff from
- 1:23:21Speaker 7: the 70s but there's some stuff going on with the
- 1:23:24Speaker 7: story there that that is different than a lot of
- 1:23:27Speaker 7: horror movies especially at that time and and i think
- 1:23:29Speaker 7: isn't even in the new one but i love the
- 1:23:31Speaker 7: new one too i think the new one you know
- 1:23:33Speaker 7: he found a way to do something kind of fun
- 1:23:37Speaker 7: and found a way to update it and make it
- 1:23:39Speaker 7: work for new audiences, but kept, you know, all of
- 1:23:41Speaker 7: the basic elements of what was cool about the original,
- 1:23:45Speaker 7: but do it in a different way.
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: Yeah. You know, as much as it's just human nature
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: to resist, you hate to hear somebody's going to mess
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: with something that you love, but you can't predict what
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: somebody might be doing with it you just can't circumscribe
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: people's creativity that way and and so in a way
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: it's kind of great when you see somebody take something
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: that you feel is very very it's almost like those
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: jackie chan movies where he's like an action museum preparations
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: guy he's like trying to have a fight while preserving
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: some ancient antique.
- 1:24:32Speaker 4: A Fabergé. Yeah, that's what it's like.
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: Somebody's taking this thing that you want preserved and not
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: messed with, but they find a way to do something
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: really exciting with it.
- 1:24:45Speaker 7: That's always impressive, actually. Well, looking at something, this isn't
- 1:24:49Speaker 7: actually a remake, but it's kind of like the Transformers
- 1:24:52Speaker 7: thing of revisiting a property. the reboot of Star Trek.
- 1:24:57Speaker 7: I watched it sitting there in the theater going, oh
- 1:24:59Speaker 7: my god, he found a way. Like I said, there's
- 1:25:01Speaker 7: no way you could touch the old characters and there's
- 1:25:03Speaker 7: no way fans would get on board with you messing
- 1:25:06Speaker 7: with the timeline. He found a way. Like freaking nature,
- 1:25:10Speaker 7: he found a way and he reworked it. I'm like, damn,
- 1:25:14Speaker 7: that's a good job. It's kind of like that with remakes.
- 1:25:17Speaker 4: I've always really disliked Leonard Nimoy. He has an air
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: of superiority.
- 1:25:27Speaker 7: I wouldn't mention that to Misty.
- 1:25:30Speaker 4: I know.
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: Was it that night you were at dinner with him
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: and Jeff Goldblum?
- 1:25:36Speaker 4: Yeah. Shatner's got pink flamingos in his yard. Not literally, figuratively.
- 1:25:43Speaker 7: He probably literally.
- 1:25:45Speaker 4: He knows, okay, I'm playing at something. This is okay.
- 1:25:50Speaker 9: Um.
- 1:25:52Speaker 4: I can take myself seriously, I can get all the girls,
- 1:25:55Speaker 4: but I'm also kind of kitschy about it. Whereas Leonard
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: Nimoy just takes himself so well. and seriously.
- 1:26:06Speaker 7: In that role, he has to. I know. But again,
- 1:26:09Speaker 7: he doesn't do much else.
- 1:26:11Speaker 4: In his documentaries and things, he still thinks that he's Spock.
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: I think that's the problem. He still wants us to
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: believe that he's smarter than us.
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: Like the way Ginger thought she was really ginger.
- 1:26:21Speaker 4: Exactly. That's exactly what it is. And so, that was
- 1:26:25Speaker 4: the one downfall of the new one. That's not a
- 1:26:28Speaker 4: spoiler at this point.
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: I like the Spock in the new one. He was
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: like Ira Glass. on steroids or.
- 1:26:35Speaker 4: Something right we went into that i think a lot
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: of people don't i did didn't like fans of star
- 1:26:40Speaker 4: trek didn't.
- 1:26:42Speaker 18: Like is it quinto yeah didn't like it was perfectly
- 1:26:46Speaker 18: fine with me i didn't like him.
- 1:26:48Speaker 4: He was perfect but see i don't love star trek
- 1:26:51Speaker 4: yeah and so no they weren't they weren't messing with
- 1:26:55Speaker 4: anything and they actually made it much more enjoyable for me.
- 1:27:00Speaker 4: I was like, yeah, I can get on with this.
- 1:27:02Speaker 4: I know most of the storylines from Star Trek. I'm
- 1:27:04Speaker 4: a sci-fi geek. I watch it, but I've never been there.
- 1:27:09Speaker 4: Next Generation, yeah, I watched the shit out of that.
- 1:27:13Speaker 4: You can't get much better for Star Trek as far
- 1:27:15Speaker 4: as I'm concerned. That reboot did a lot for me.
- 1:27:18Speaker 4: I quite enjoyed it and kind of wiped the slate
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: clean and let's move on.
- 1:27:25Speaker 3: I hope.
- 1:27:26Speaker 7: I guess.
- 1:27:28Speaker 4: Yeah, but that was the one part that bothered me,
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: is that we had to have almost, and it's almost like,
- 1:27:36Speaker 4: Nimoy said, fine, you can use the property and you
- 1:27:38Speaker 4: can remake this, but I have to be in it
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: almost like I've got to give my acknowledgement that this
- 1:27:43Speaker 4: is okay to do.
- 1:27:44Speaker 7: Well, they like to do that anyway.
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: That's true. Ask Batman. But you know what?
- 1:27:52Speaker 4: He's exactly like Shatner. He's got flamingos in his yard, too.
- 1:27:55Speaker 7: He does have flamingos in his yard.
- 1:27:57Speaker 4: So, that's fine.
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: I met him once when I was a kid, and...
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: That would be a photo of me with a celebrity
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: if I can find that.
- 1:28:05Speaker 7: See, we just saw him last year. Didn't get a photo, though.
- 1:28:10Speaker 7: He had quite a crowd going there. I was impressed
- 1:28:12Speaker 7: to see the Batmobile up close.
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:28:17Speaker 3: I mean, I.
- 1:28:19Speaker 7: Got a list of stuff. I don't know if we
- 1:28:21Speaker 7: want to just try to knock out the rest of
- 1:28:22Speaker 7: the list, or have we said all we need to say?
- 1:28:25Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: I mean, there's There's a bunch more remakes.
- 1:28:29Speaker 4: Oh, there's a ton.
- 1:28:29Speaker 7: The one that I think should.
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: Be remade is Godfather 3. Just make another one like
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: that one never happened. Godfather 3.
- 1:28:39Speaker 4: In fact, throw it. the cut of the original. Yeah.
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: Just find a way to actually re-film over that film.
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: Chemically strip it. That was on the film.
- 1:28:53Speaker 7: Even he's kind of said, and I wonder how much
- 1:28:56Speaker 7: of that could have been saved. To me, there's even
- 1:28:59Speaker 7: a little bit of good story going on there. I
- 1:29:02Speaker 7: like that version of him trying to be legit and
- 1:29:05Speaker 7: trying to go into business. You know, it's the 90s
- 1:29:07Speaker 7: by then, so there's a way to be a businessman
- 1:29:11Speaker 7: and still pull that off. I like that story of
- 1:29:13Speaker 7: Corleone having to do that. But I don't know. I mean, again,
- 1:29:18Speaker 7: even like Coppola's come out now and talked about how
- 1:29:21Speaker 7: much there were, I mean, the studio was rushing him
- 1:29:25Speaker 7: to get it out for like a Christmas release and
- 1:29:27Speaker 7: how much, you know. Obviously, there were casting problems. There's
- 1:29:31Speaker 7: all this other stuff. So I don't know how much
- 1:29:33Speaker 7: there was a good movie there to begin with. There
- 1:29:35Speaker 7: might have been. I don't know.
- 1:29:38Speaker 4: What you should just do instead of asking for a
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: remake or even acknowledging the third, watch Godfather 1 and
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: 2 and then watch Goodfellas and call it a trilogy.
- 1:29:48Speaker 3: There you go.
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: The cheesy remake thing reminds me of when they're trying
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: to do that Saw-like movie on The Sopranos. And so
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: the gangsters come in, and they think they know movies,
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: and they're trying to make this cheesy movie. And Chris Moltisano,
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: they're investing in this, and they're making some horrible... They're
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: not sure whether it's science fiction, or they never figure
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: out whether this guy is... Is it supernatural? Is he
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: back from the dead? It's one of those supernatural or
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: a science thing. Whatever.
- 1:30:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: That's a great sequence.
- 1:30:27Speaker 7: I don't know. I mean, there's so many other ones
- 1:30:29Speaker 7: we could throw out there. We didn't even get to
- 1:30:31Speaker 7: the Don't Let Tim Burton.
- 1:30:33Speaker 12: Remake a Movie.
- 1:30:34Speaker 9: Oh.
- 1:30:34Speaker 7: That's its own category, really.
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: Yeah, because Len's about to watch one of those right now.
- 1:30:40Speaker 7: Oh, I feel sorry for him.
- 1:30:43Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, the Willy Wonka.
- 1:30:47Speaker 12: I hate that.
- 1:30:48Speaker 7: I just hate that one so much.
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: Yeah, and then there was the lovely and talented Planet
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: of the Apes.
- 1:30:57Speaker 7: Which we've discussed.
- 1:30:59Speaker 4: With the new one.
- 1:31:01Speaker 7: But again, it's sort of revisiting a property. It's not
- 1:31:06Speaker 7: a sequel really. It's its own weird prequel kind of
- 1:31:10Speaker 7: sort of But it's also maybe a reboot because we're
- 1:31:13Speaker 7: doing things a little different, so we could continue on.
- 1:31:15Speaker 13: It helps remove the marketing.
- 1:31:16Speaker 7: But it's sort of, yeah, it kind of makes you
- 1:31:18Speaker 7: forget about that.
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: When you see a bad sequel, you feel like Charlton
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: Heston when he sees the Statue of Liberty there. Damn
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: you all to hell!
- 1:31:27Speaker 4: That's right.
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: Yeah, that's your reaction to a bad sequel.
- 1:31:30Speaker 4: And instead of Lady Liberty, it's Tim Burton.
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: Damn you!
- 1:31:37Speaker 7: You're in the studios all the time.
- 1:31:40Speaker 4: Oh.
- 1:31:40Speaker 7: So, again, we've decided it's talented people. That's kind of
- 1:31:46Speaker 7: a main. Again, if they just hand you, and then
- 1:31:49Speaker 7: you can look through a list of all these other people, and,
- 1:31:51Speaker 7: you know, the guy who did Clash of the Titans,
- 1:31:55Speaker 7: I'm guessing they handed that to him, you know? It's
- 1:31:57Speaker 7: like nobody cared about it. It didn't have anything invested
- 1:31:59Speaker 7: in it. Yeah, and we want to cram 3D into it.
- 1:32:03Speaker 7: We don't even want you to shoot 3D. We'll decide
- 1:32:05Speaker 7: after the fact we want it to be 3D, so
- 1:32:07Speaker 7: we can charge three bucks more each time.
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: But the only real example of the one where somebody
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: remade a bad movie and made it into a much
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: better movie we've had on was like Ocean's Eleven, wasn't it?
- 1:32:21Speaker 7: There's other... Again, you were saying Little Shop of Horrors,
- 1:32:25Speaker 7: which a lot of people would say is a pretty...
- 1:32:28Speaker 7: schlocky Corman movie. Again, I don't like a lot of musicals.
- 1:32:34Speaker 7: I really love Little Shop of Horrors. Maybe it's because
- 1:32:37Speaker 7: people are getting.
- 1:32:38Speaker 4: Eaten by a plant.
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: He did a good version of that here in town.
- 1:32:43Speaker 7: I've seen several of them that were pretty good.
- 1:32:45Speaker 4: But it's good Steve Martin. It's cast well.
- 1:32:49Speaker 7: The cast is perfect, actually.
- 1:32:50Speaker 4: Rick Moranis, you couldn't get any better than Rick Moranis.
- 1:32:54Speaker 7: He is Seymour. In his real life, he's Seymour. So
- 1:32:58Speaker 7: I was trying to think something that was almost along
- 1:33:00Speaker 7: those exact same lines. Did you see the reefer madness remake?
- 1:33:04Speaker 4: No, it's a.
- 1:33:05Speaker 7: Lot of fun and taking a, what was a bad movie.
- 1:33:08Speaker 7: I mean, there's no, I mean, it was nothing but
- 1:33:10Speaker 7: propaganda basically. And they made it, they realized that the
- 1:33:15Speaker 7: dorkiness of it and they totally play it up and
- 1:33:18Speaker 7: they turn it into a musical and like they really
- 1:33:20Speaker 7: found a way to kind of make it fun.
- 1:33:22Speaker 4: Cool.
- 1:33:22Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:33:25Speaker 7: But yeah, I'm trying to think of some other that
- 1:33:26Speaker 7: they sort of improved upon. We've hit a few of them, but.
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: It's funny how many of them we've already talked about
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: on other occasions.
- 1:33:35Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 1:33:36Speaker 7: And that's kind of why I wanted to go ahead
- 1:33:37Speaker 7: and throw it out as an official... Because, you know, we,
- 1:33:40Speaker 7: for a while there, were notorious for, every time we
- 1:33:42Speaker 7: did the news, bitching about the new remake. I mean,
- 1:33:46Speaker 7: we had a whole category set up for.
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: It, so.
- 1:33:49Speaker 7: Which, again, as time's going on, I've tried to be
- 1:33:52Speaker 7: a little more open-minded about it and be like, and
- 1:33:55Speaker 7: for these very reasons, for some of these examples we've
- 1:33:58Speaker 7: come up with, that it's not necessarily across the board
- 1:34:01Speaker 7: it's going to suck if it's a remake, but it
- 1:34:04Speaker 7: depends on what you're doing and who you give it to.
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: I would like to name the thing that's wrong in
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: the remake after Morticia in the Addams Family. Because I've
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: just always felt that, you know, taking that property and
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: not coming up with a satisfying Morticia is just, that's
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: the example of it's just wrong. You've got to have
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: a Morticia. And Angelica Houston, she's a fine actress. She's
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: no Morticia.
- 1:34:32Speaker 7: At the time, I didn't.
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: Daryl Hannah.
- 1:34:34Speaker 7: Daryl Hannah's terrible casting. It's a joke. At the time,
- 1:34:38Speaker 7: I didn't think Angelica Houston was bad just because she
- 1:34:40Speaker 7: seems really creepy to me, like in the real world.
- 1:34:43Speaker 7: She doesn't have the sex appeal from the TV show,
- 1:34:46Speaker 7: but she did strike me as, oh, yeah, that's as
- 1:34:49Speaker 7: creepy as you can get right there. Good going.
- 1:34:52Speaker 4: All of that is offset by Christina Ricci and Raul Julio.
- 1:34:56Speaker 2: Christina Ricci, it's maybe my favorite thing she's ever done.
- 1:35:01Speaker 7: She's awesome.
- 1:35:02Speaker 4: Red Riding Hood might be my favorite thing she's ever done.
- 1:35:06Speaker 4: I didn't love that. I love... You just love that
- 1:35:10Speaker 4: it happened? I want so many people to watch it.
- 1:35:13Speaker 2: Wait, was she in that movie Pumpkin?
- 1:35:17Speaker 4: She was in that movie Pecker.
- 1:35:20Speaker 7: She was in that one.
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: John Waters.
- 1:35:23Speaker 4: Black Snake Mom.
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: Pumpkin was a movie that was almost like just a
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: sustained straight-faced joke until the end where I think she actually,
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: not just figuratively, but actually winks at the camera. Nice.
- 1:35:39Speaker 4: If you're going to wink at the camera, you may
- 1:35:41Speaker 4: as well literally wink at the camera.
- 1:35:43Speaker 7: It's funny game style again.
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:35:45Speaker 4: I was reading it.
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: Yes, it was her. Yes, Christina Ricci. And it's about
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: high school girl dating a retarded guy. It's just so wrong.
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: And they just, they play it as straight as they
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: can until they can't anymore.
- 1:36:02Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:36:02Speaker 4: They beat the dead horse and then they wink at you.
- 1:36:05Speaker 4: And then they wink at God.
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: That's a weird experience to have watched that.
- 1:36:09Speaker 4: Might have to watch it.
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh, Lord.
- 1:36:13Speaker 7: All right. Well, we've said you need talented people. They
- 1:36:16Speaker 7: have to have something invested in it. They have to
- 1:36:17Speaker 7: actually care about it or it's going to suck. I
- 1:36:22Speaker 7: was trying to think of other stuff. I mean, to me,
- 1:36:24Speaker 7: I almost have to have something to say with it.
- 1:36:26Speaker 7: I mean, instead of just, you have to almost have
- 1:36:30Speaker 7: your own spin or update it to the point. I mean,
- 1:36:33Speaker 7: some stuff really is just old and like the circumstances
- 1:36:38Speaker 7: that come into play in that movie just don't work now.
- 1:36:40Speaker 7: And there is a way to do it now and
- 1:36:42Speaker 7: do something different with it. So with that, I mean,
- 1:36:45Speaker 7: there is a way to update it. And not just
- 1:36:48Speaker 7: be a modern setting. Oh, we've got to make it
- 1:36:50Speaker 7: look nice for the kids. To me, when they do those,
- 1:36:54Speaker 7: that's the one I haven't seen this yet, but I
- 1:36:56Speaker 7: don't understand the Footloose remake. What are you going to
- 1:36:59Speaker 7: do that's not in that other one? What are you
- 1:37:02Speaker 7: updating that's going to revolutionize that plot?
- 1:37:06Speaker 4: You don't have Kevin Bacon.
- 1:37:08Speaker 7: And the thing is, I talked to somebody who had
- 1:37:11Speaker 7: actually gone their entire life without seeing the first Footloose.
- 1:37:15Speaker 7: had went to the theater and seen the other one
- 1:37:18Speaker 7: and turned around and watched the other one and still
- 1:37:20Speaker 7: likes the new one better. So I don't know if
- 1:37:22Speaker 7: it's just not having it grown up, watching it, having
- 1:37:26Speaker 7: it just be part of Americana at this point. That's
- 1:37:30Speaker 7: just any stupid.
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: It'll at least add some new twists to playing Six
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: Degrees of Kevin Bacon.
- 1:37:39Speaker 7: Can you use the new Riz McCormick? Yeah. We can
- 1:37:43Speaker 7: just switch it off to this new guy.
- 1:37:45Speaker 4: The first one was more of a music video.
- 1:37:50Speaker 7: Oh, it was. I mean, it came at the time
- 1:37:52Speaker 7: when half the movies out there became music videos.
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: Right, right. There might be six or seven montages.
- 1:37:59Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 1:37:59Speaker 4: Full song montages in it.
- 1:38:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:38:01Speaker 4: And so, plus dance sequences. So, I think even the
- 1:38:08Speaker 4: videos on MTV were just cuts of the movie.
- 1:38:10Speaker 7: Were just straight up out of the movie.
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: It pretty much was.
- 1:38:12Speaker 5: And so.
- 1:38:13Speaker 4: I don't know. I mean, it was just geared towards
- 1:38:16Speaker 4: what people were watching at the time.
- 1:38:18Speaker 7: But the kids now, are they gearing it towards something different?
- 1:38:22Speaker 7: Are they going more.
- 1:38:23Speaker 4: Again, I haven't.
- 1:38:24Speaker 7: Seen it, but I'm just like, how could you do
- 1:38:27Speaker 7: how could you do it otherwise i mean i guess
- 1:38:30Speaker 7: make it more glee like i mean that's that's now
- 1:38:33Speaker 7: is you know or american idol knockoffs and glee it's
- 1:38:36Speaker 7: like that's.
- 1:38:37Speaker 4: All actual substance to it that's the.
- 1:38:39Speaker 7: Hell you say The first one wasn't completely devoid of that.
- 1:38:44Speaker 7: There were some decent scenes with John Lithgow and the
- 1:38:47Speaker 7: scenes with him and his daughter. There's a little bit there.
- 1:38:50Speaker 7: As much as you can cram into that ridiculous plot.
- 1:38:53Speaker 7: It's not a bad movie. It's just cheesy. I don't know.
- 1:38:57Speaker 7: It's not bad.
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: It's just drawn that way.
- 1:39:02Speaker 7: Thankfully they haven't remade that yet. I don't know. I
- 1:39:07Speaker 7: think that I have more of a problem with when
- 1:39:09Speaker 7: they just try to make it modern setting like what
- 1:39:13Speaker 7: they were doing with most of those horror remakes i
- 1:39:15Speaker 7: mean it's the the black christmas one you know let's
- 1:39:18Speaker 7: show well that one was worse because they updated other
- 1:39:20Speaker 7: stuff but when they were doing like the sorority row
- 1:39:22Speaker 7: and the the last house on the left which i
- 1:39:25Speaker 7: haven't decided on those i mean they kept trying to
- 1:39:27Speaker 7: do those which were already shocking movies that i don't
- 1:39:31Speaker 7: know if they lived up to that same impact with
- 1:39:34Speaker 7: that kind of stuff but oh.
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: I went I'm sorry, it just occurred to me a
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: movie that they ought to just update was Peeping Tom.
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: That's true. Because they should make that now that he
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: doesn't have to carry an eight-pound camera under his coat.
- 1:39:53Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: It's like that needed to be, well, now you could
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: make that almost kind of make sense because you could have, like.
- 1:40:01Speaker 7: On his lapel.
- 1:40:02Speaker 4: Yeah, or a pin in his pocket.
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: Instead of carrying that thing.
- 1:40:07Speaker 7: That's true. That is so funny. And for something that, again,
- 1:40:13Speaker 7: normal people don't really know that one, but in the
- 1:40:15Speaker 7: film world is so well regarded, you'd think somebody would
- 1:40:18Speaker 7: want to cash in on that and make their own
- 1:40:21Speaker 7: version of it, which would probably be terrible, but... At
- 1:40:25Speaker 7: least that is something that, you know, again, like I said,
- 1:40:27Speaker 7: the world is different enough from one aspect that you
- 1:40:31Speaker 7: could update the whole thing and make it something different.
- 1:40:34Speaker 4: You know who you could cast as the Peeping Tom,
- 1:40:37Speaker 4: who would be a perfect throwback? Crispin Glover.
- 1:40:40Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:40:40Speaker 4: Could be a good Peeping Tom. Creepy, and he's already
- 1:40:44Speaker 4: been a Peeping Tom.
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: He's got that going for him.
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: He's got that going for him.
- 1:40:48Speaker 2: So he's got that going for him.
- 1:40:49Speaker 4: Although, is he even acting anymore?
- 1:40:51Speaker 16: No.
- 1:40:52Speaker 7: Every once in a while, I still see him turn
- 1:40:53Speaker 7: up and stuff.
- 1:40:54Speaker 2: You know who else could do that? Hayden Christensen.
- 1:40:58Speaker 7: Because everyone hates him already.
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: There's something about him. And I remember, I think I
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: heard Misty talking about him or something.
- 1:41:05Speaker 7: She hates him.
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: But the thing I loved him in was Shattered Glass,
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: where he played that fraudulent reporter. And he just seemed
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: so right for that.
- 1:41:16Speaker 7: Yeah. because he seems like a fraud he was.
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: So nice to everybody he was so nice but there's
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: just something about him that doesn't like once everything comes
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: out it seemed like yeah that fits that makes sense
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: that he's he's too nice he's up to something there's
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: something wrong with him.
- 1:41:36Speaker 4: The the only thing i ever get out of hayden
- 1:41:38Speaker 4: christensen is when i look at him is I picture
- 1:41:42Speaker 4: him in his mind replaying over and over going, I'm
- 1:41:46Speaker 4: acting now. I'm acting now. How do I act? I'm acting.
- 1:41:49Speaker 4: You know, just over and over. He's consciously thinking about
- 1:41:53Speaker 4: acting while he's acting.
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: I don't know. It sort of endeared me. He told
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: this story when he was in Star Wars. Like when
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: he was first doing the sword fights, he was making
- 1:42:03Speaker 2: the noise. Because he'd done it growing up as a kid.
- 1:42:07Speaker 7: Yeah, it would be hard for me not to.
- 1:42:09Speaker 2: You don't have to make... We'll put the noise in later.
- 1:42:12Speaker 2: But he was out there going.
- 1:42:13Speaker 7: Yeah, I was doing that over Christmas, by the way.
- 1:42:20Speaker 7: My son is.
- 1:42:21Speaker 4: So wrapped up in Star Wars right now. We've got
- 1:42:25Speaker 4: Star Wars Legos. We've got the Lego Star Wars DS
- 1:42:28Speaker 4: game that he plays non-stop. We're watching the movies now.
- 1:42:32Speaker 4: You know, five-year-old watching the movies. And he... out of
- 1:42:36Speaker 4: time for him. He's trying to, hey, wait, is this
- 1:42:38Speaker 4: the one? Or wait, what happened? Wait, did the Death
- 1:42:42Speaker 4: Star already get blown up? You know, because they.
- 1:42:44Speaker 7: Messed it up. See, I never did that as a kid.
- 1:42:47Speaker 4: And, well, he's fine.
- 1:42:49Speaker 7: Well, no, even, you know, still though, it's like, I
- 1:42:51Speaker 7: think they make it more confusing now because there's all
- 1:42:54Speaker 7: these other movies and they don't go in order. Or
- 1:42:57Speaker 7: if they do go in order, they don't make any
- 1:42:58Speaker 7: sense anyway. So, yeah.
- 1:43:00Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:43:00Speaker 4: And then Chewbacca shows up in the third one.
- 1:43:03Speaker 7: And Yoda's here, but then later he acts like he
- 1:43:06Speaker 7: doesn't know what the hell's going on. And 3PO never
- 1:43:08Speaker 7: knows what the hell's going on, even though he's been
- 1:43:10Speaker 7: in all these damn... I don't know. It's so funny.
- 1:43:13Speaker 4: You know, he's got to forget something. Somebody wipes the memory.
- 1:43:15Speaker 7: Somebody wipes the memory. Yeah, there's so many plot holes
- 1:43:19Speaker 7: in that crazy. No matter how many times he keeps
- 1:43:21Speaker 7: readjusting shit on the new box set, it's still like, oh, yeah, well,
- 1:43:24Speaker 7: how come this doesn't make any damn sense?
- 1:43:26Speaker 4: And the thing that confuses the shit out of him
- 1:43:29Speaker 4: is he'll see Jedi, and Luke's talking to Leia about
- 1:43:34Speaker 4: knowing your mother, and he's just like, what are you
- 1:43:36Speaker 4: talking about? She never knew her.
- 1:43:40Speaker 7: Fix that, Luke.
- 1:43:42Speaker 4: You can't go back and have her know her mother.
- 1:43:45Speaker 11: No.
- 1:43:46Speaker 4: So, yeah. But he loves it. He thinks, and he's
- 1:43:52Speaker 4: not even seen the cartoon one that's got Count Dooku
- 1:43:55Speaker 4: a lot in it, but because Dooku is, it takes
- 1:44:00Speaker 4: at least two Jedi to take him down, plus the
- 1:44:03Speaker 4: Emperor's giving him up, but he's got lightning, and he
- 1:44:08Speaker 4: can disband Yoda and Anakin and Obi-Wan all at the
- 1:44:15Speaker 4: same time. He's like, He's the best one. You're supposed
- 1:44:20Speaker 4: to think that Darth Vader or the Emperor or even
- 1:44:22Speaker 4: Darth Maul are the badasses. It's due to him. He's
- 1:44:27Speaker 4: the real scary one.
- 1:44:28Speaker 7: In episode two, he is a badass. Now tune into
- 1:44:31Speaker 7: that first few minutes of three and he's a chump.
- 1:44:33Speaker 4: He's just a sacrificial lamb in that one. He's giving
- 1:44:37Speaker 4: up in that one. He's having a lot of fun
- 1:44:41Speaker 4: with it. I got hit in the place where men
- 1:44:46Speaker 4: shouldn't get hit by a lightsaber.
- 1:44:49Speaker 7: That's the price you pay, having lightsabers laying around the house.
- 1:44:53Speaker 4: But he always wants to have a red one.
- 1:44:56Speaker 7: Your child's evil. That's all there is to it.
- 1:44:59Speaker 4: Anyway. All right.
- 1:45:02Speaker 2: Remakes.
- 1:45:04Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: I think we should do this episode over again.
- 1:45:07Speaker 4: We should do it better.
- 1:45:09Speaker 7: We're never going to get finished.
- 1:45:10Speaker 4: If we've got somebody talented.
- 1:45:11Speaker 7: Yeah. Oh, I don't know. I think we've covered all
- 1:45:16Speaker 7: the basics. We could rattle on with more titles all
- 1:45:20Speaker 7: night long. But yeah, to me, that's all you can do, really,
- 1:45:23Speaker 7: is take the basic idea and either go with it
- 1:45:26Speaker 7: in a different direction or just give us something new, really.
- 1:45:31Speaker 7: Anybody who just kind of half-assed does it. Those are
- 1:45:34Speaker 7: the ones that you cringe at when you see them
- 1:45:37Speaker 7: come out. But all the ones that we've talked about
- 1:45:40Speaker 7: that are good are always talented people, and they usually
- 1:45:42Speaker 7: find Some way to make it their own and do
- 1:45:45Speaker 7: something different with it. And that's, I think, the only
- 1:45:48Speaker 7: thing that sort of takes it down the right road.
- 1:45:51Speaker 7: But I feel like we've come up with a lot
- 1:45:53Speaker 7: of good options for usually condemning all of the remakes.
- 1:45:58Speaker 7: We've come up with a lot of good ones.
- 1:45:59Speaker 4: I'm done condemning. Like I said at the beginning, I'm
- 1:46:01Speaker 4: done condemning them.
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: Make your movie.
- 1:46:03Speaker 4: If somebody's going to buy it, they're going to buy it.
- 1:46:06Speaker 4: And it's up to me to let it go if
- 1:46:08Speaker 4: it's ruining something that I hold dear. It doesn't ruin it.
- 1:46:13Speaker 4: It's me letting it ruin it. You're just out there
- 1:46:16Speaker 4: being an artist and making a movie, as far as
- 1:46:18Speaker 4: I'm concerned.
- 1:46:18Speaker 7: You just have to continually point out which thing you're
- 1:46:21Speaker 7: talking about. No, no, the original. No, no, this year's
- 1:46:25Speaker 7: version of it. Because whatever you're talking about, I hate
- 1:46:28Speaker 7: that one. All right. Does that wrap it up for
- 1:46:32Speaker 7: you guys?
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm good.
- 1:46:34Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:46:36Speaker 7: Before we totally round it out, we've got feedback.
- 1:46:41Speaker 4: People listen.
- 1:46:43Speaker 7: What was it?
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: Did Randy say about me that I was like.
- 1:46:46Speaker 7: I was going to ask if you ever heard that one.
- 1:46:49Speaker 2: That's my favorite feedback I've got is I'm like a
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: protocol droid with a virus. I can see that.
- 1:46:58Speaker 7: I also like that he's not sure you really exist.
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: I can see that too.
- 1:47:03Speaker 7: I know you and I can see that.
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: The one I didn't get was that guy who said
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: I was the smart one. That's like I'm Kate Jackson
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: on Charlie's Angels. It's just because I show less cleavage
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: than you guys do.
- 1:47:21Speaker 7: Oh, you're wearing the turtleneck.
- 1:47:22Speaker 4: Well, I'm known to keep my zipper down in pictures.
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
- 1:47:27Speaker 4: I'm obviously the Chrissy of the protocol. Oh, wait, wait.
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: Chrissy, that reminds me. In The Killers... It's Reagan next
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: to Norman Fell.
- 1:47:41Speaker 7: Norman Fell.
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: Norman Fell. They're sitting there next.
- 1:47:44Speaker 4: To each other.
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh, it's beautiful. Anyway, we've got feedback.
- 1:47:49Speaker 7: All right. And I thought it was fitting for this
- 1:47:52Speaker 7: one because we hear from James, and it's on Black
- 1:47:55Speaker 7: Christmas and the remake.
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: So here we go.
- 1:47:59Speaker 6: I just want to.
- 1:48:00Speaker 16: Time in on Black Christmas. I agree completely with the
- 1:48:04Speaker 16: fact that the best.
- 1:48:04Speaker 14: Part about that movie is the lack of backstory and
- 1:48:08Speaker 14: explanation on all the weird messages Billy's saying. One of
- 1:48:11Speaker 14: my biggest problems with the remake is that they basically
- 1:48:15Speaker 14: explain all that crap.
- 1:48:17Speaker 6: I mean, you know, their version, they kind of make
- 1:48:19Speaker 6: a big feedback story up about why Billy is how
- 1:48:23Speaker 6: he is and there's incest and then he births, he
- 1:48:28Speaker 6: like gives.
- 1:48:29Speaker 16: Not gives birth, but he fathers his own sister or some,
- 1:48:32Speaker 16: I don't know, it's fucking retarded. The remake is a
- 1:48:36Speaker 16: decent slasher by modern standards. I mean, some gore, some good,
- 1:48:41Speaker 16: you know, some cool.
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: Kills, hot chicks.
- 1:48:42Speaker 14: It's all right. It's not, you know, like the worst
- 1:48:46Speaker 14: shit ever. It's not like Rob Zombie's Halloween or anything.
- 1:48:49Speaker 14: But it's pretty bad. Of course, the original, as y'all
- 1:48:55Speaker 14: said quite clearly, the original Black Christmas is awesome.
- 1:48:59Speaker 4: Absolutely awesome.
- 1:49:01Speaker 14: That was all I was going to say.
- 1:49:04Speaker 4: If you want a backstory, you want to know.
- 1:49:06Speaker 14: Why Billy is the way he is, because I don't
- 1:49:08Speaker 14: know why anyone would want that, watch the remake and
- 1:49:11Speaker 14: then realize that's not actually what you wanted, because it
- 1:49:14Speaker 14: makes the movie a hundred times worse.
- 1:49:19Speaker 7: Thank you, James.
- 1:49:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:49:20Speaker 7: And I agree with pretty much all of that.
- 1:49:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't need to know.
- 1:49:28Speaker 7: I think it is very much like Rob Zombie's Halloween
- 1:49:30Speaker 7: because for that very reason. It's like they take stuff
- 1:49:33Speaker 7: you don't care about, you really don't want to know.
- 1:49:36Speaker 7: In my opinion, same goes with both of them. What
- 1:49:39Speaker 7: you don't know about the killer makes that original movie
- 1:49:42Speaker 7: so much better. And them telling backstory in both of
- 1:49:45Speaker 7: these instances just made the movie lame as far as
- 1:49:48Speaker 7: I'm concerned. So, yeah. I really like the original. Don't
- 1:49:54Speaker 7: like the remake.
- 1:49:55Speaker 4: When you're making something scary, think You know, especially with movies,
- 1:50:00Speaker 4: think about what Hitchcock would do. He's not going to
- 1:50:03Speaker 4: tell you why this person is insane. He's not going
- 1:50:08Speaker 4: to show you the bad guy. We don't see the
- 1:50:12Speaker 4: bad guy in Black Christmas.
- 1:50:16Speaker 7: Or even, I'm thinking of our example earlier, Psycho.
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:50:20Speaker 7: You don't know why norman bates is like that hitchcock
- 1:50:24Speaker 7: never did that there's just crazy mother and he's like
- 1:50:27Speaker 7: that and he's messed up and he does what he
- 1:50:29Speaker 7: does now three movies three movies later when they make
- 1:50:33Speaker 7: psycho four for cable they give you the backstory where
- 1:50:37Speaker 7: he too is screwing around with mom and that's why
- 1:50:40Speaker 7: he's so messed up and mom is super overbearing and
- 1:50:42Speaker 7: mom makes him crazy and that's again, that's not a
- 1:50:45Speaker 7: terrible movie. I remember it. Okay.
- 1:50:48Speaker 19: Again, I haven't watched it since it was on cable
- 1:50:50Speaker 19: years ago, but it's a little better made than even
- 1:50:53Speaker 19: like the third and maybe the second one where as,
- 1:50:56Speaker 19: as you know, knockoff horror sequels go again, you kind of,
- 1:51:00Speaker 19: that's another one you don't do.
- 1:51:02Speaker 7: It's as bad as remaking almost as trying to do
- 1:51:04Speaker 7: a sequel to psycho. But again, that's what you see.
- 1:51:07Speaker 7: You see some other director come along and want to
- 1:51:09Speaker 7: do a backstory on even Norman Bates where, you know,
- 1:51:13Speaker 7: Hitchcock doesn't bother with that. He's just like, that's the
- 1:51:16Speaker 7: fear is she gets in the shower. You don't see
- 1:51:19Speaker 7: it coming. You don't know why he does what he does.
- 1:51:21Speaker 7: It just happens. And that's the movie.
- 1:51:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:51:25Speaker 7: Backstory. There's some movies that you need that in, but
- 1:51:29Speaker 7: not these, not the ones we've been referencing.
- 1:51:31Speaker 16: Right.
