- 0:07The Boston Red Sox headed the White Sox Park to face Chicago for a Sunday double header on August 20th, 1972.
- 0:14Boston was managed by Eddie Casco and they were an average team in 1972, hovering around 500 for most of the season.
- 0:21But in mid-August they were still in the playoff hunt in the AL East.
- 0:24The Tigers, Orioles, Yankees and Red Sox were all within four games of one another.
- 0:29The White Sox were led by third year manager Chuck Tanner and they were in a battle of their own with the Oakland A's.
- 0:34They entered this game with a 66 and 47 record tied on top of the AL West.
- 0:39This audio recording is from game one of the double header featuring announcers Dave O'Brien and Ned Martin.
- 0:46...for all these drills and action excitement today. Should be a lot of them. And here is Ned Martin. Alright Dave, thank you and good afternoon everybody again from Chicago.
- 0:56And the final days for the Red Sox in this city this year, at least in the regular season, Wilbur Wood, Delmont Mads going against the Red Sox.
- 1:08He's one and one with Boston this year. Tommy Harper up who he has shown signs of getting out of the batting slump he was in.
- 1:16He led yesterday's game with a home run. He's hitting 270 and the knuckleball is inside ball one.
- 1:23Harper has 12 homers, two on this trip and 40 runs batted in. He's led off two games with home runs on this road trip.
- 1:32He checks his swing on a high knuckleball and it's a ball.
- 1:39Two balls no strike. Harper, Harper-Rishio and Cater will be up.
- 1:45Danny Cater in the number three spot in this first game. Galea Sremski sitting this one out he'll be in the second game.
- 1:52The pitch by Wood. Ground ball the third, picked up by Speezy-O near the bag.
- 1:57Throws the cross in time and Harper is out. One away.
- 2:11Louis Apparicio hitting 272 at the plate. 25 runs batted in.
- 2:17Wilbur Wood has beaten the Red Sox just once in this ballpark.
- 2:21He's lost to them three times here and in Fenway he is three and three against the Red Sox.
- 2:27Last time he beat them here was in 1968. Pitching to Apparicio, strike ball inside corner.
- 2:40Woody kicks and throws inside. The cap.
- 2:46One and one. The pitch. Foul at the plate. One and two. Eddie Papowski. The acting manager today. Also today is his birthday.
- 3:02And another birthday. We'll mention in just a moment. Here is the pitch and it's in the dirt. One ball, two strikes.
- 3:19Dennis B. Twombly of St. John'sbury Center Vermont. 96 years old today.
- 3:25Abbot Red Sox fan. And in the listeners follows the Red Sox on radio. Happy birthday. Mr. Twombly.
- 3:34Here's a swinging strike dropped by the catcher Herman. Apparicio goes to first but the throw beats him and that's two away.
- 3:41Apparicio strikes out. The play goes two to three with Herman throwing over to first baseman Richie Allen.
- 3:51Two down and Danny Cader up hitting 240. Eight homers, 39 runs batted in.
- 4:07The wind up by Wood and the pitch to the plate is inside. Ball one.
- 4:11The pitch.
- 4:20The tackle ball kicks and throws and it's beaten into the dirt. One ball, one strike.
- 4:26Wood looks in for the side. Now he throws and hit on the ground on one hop to short.
- 4:40Fixed up by Louis Alvarado. Throws the first in time. An easy one, two, three in him for Wilbur Wood.
- 4:46Red Sox out in order and after happening is Red Sox nothing. The White Sox coming up.
- 4:56Good shot.
- 5:00Running on a 10th court on a hot summer day, you really run up a circle.
- 5:05At last, there goes. You will be best for a couple of beers. So today, there's only one beer that'll do.
- 5:16It's one beer to have when you're happy or to want.
- 5:32It's a barrel instead. Come on people, picture me.
- 5:47Oh, no.
- 5:56As some other scores here, Cleveland has jumped on Oakland 3-0 after two and a half innings at Cleveland in their single game.
- 6:03Ken Holtzman against Dick Kedrow. Cleveland out in front 3-0. California will have Clyde Wright going this afternoon.
- 6:10New York will have Bill Slayback at Detroit. The Watties at Kansas City. Jim Colburn for the Brewers. Bruce Dahlcanton for the Royals.
- 6:18Minnesota plays later on a 5-30 game at Baltimore. And the New York Yankees are at Texas later on in the evening.
- 6:26In the National League of Latter at Montreal, Shuler against Stoneman. Cincinnati failed a score on the top of the first at Shea Stadium.
- 6:41Houston and Ken Reynolds trying for his first win of the year for Philadelphia. Pittsburgh plays a double header at San Diego.
- 6:48The Cardinals are a single game at San Francisco and Chicago at Los Angeles. We're in the bottom of the first inning here at Chicago.
- 6:57Scoreless game. Pat Kelly up against Lynn McLaughlin. The right-hander throws high to Kelly Ball one. Pat is hitting 2-72.
- 7:05Two home runs, 15 runs batted in. McLaughlin getting his first start against the White Rock.
- 7:13Throws and misses high. Small two. Kelly left-handed batter and very fast.
- 7:25Two balls, no strikes. McLaughlin slows himself down. Now he throws strikes called on the inside corner.
- 7:39Jay John sewn on deck with Dick Allen to follow.
- 7:50Now McLaughlin winds and throws. Dan is up all inside on a check swing. Three and one. Fastball just missed.
- 8:07Three balls, one strike. The pitch. Ball four he walks in.
- 8:17The draw is in charge by walking the first man. Kelly at first base John Stone in the batter. Jay John Stone playing center field in this game.
- 8:30He's the left-handed batter. John Stone hitting 181. Three home runs, 15 runs batted in.
- 8:54Kelly has 20 stolen bases this year. He edges off first base. Has about a five-step lead.
- 9:00And McLaughlin breaking pitches low. Ball one. He wants another baseball from late umpire George Maloney.
- 9:14Here's the set. The pitch. Strike called at the knees. Throw to first base by fifth and Kelly gets back.
- 9:22That's kind of an afterthought for Carl Smith. He fired down there. One ball, one strike.
- 9:34McLaughlin throws and it's in the dirt. Ball two. Ninth stop by fifth. Two balls, one strike.
- 9:56McLaughlin gets set. Throws. Ground ball into right field. They fit. Just as catered. Throw over to second base by fifth. Kelly goes to third.
- 10:07A white shot. And runners at first and third.
- 10:21Well, they're starting out against McLaughlin like they did against Siebert on Friday night.
- 10:26A walk and then one of those artificial curved singles. All just keeps going faster after it hits the first time.
- 10:34Cater just was unable to get it. He went over and tried to backhand it. It went by him so fast.
- 10:41On a normal serve, it probably would have been handled by Cater. Here is Dick Allen.
- 10:46And he takes the pitch way outside ball one. Allen hitting 3-13. 29 home runs. 85 runs.
- 10:53So the right strikes have something going right off. The pitch. Strike calls. One ball, one strike.
- 11:05Threadstrikes infield playing at double play depth with Allen up there and in the first inning.
- 11:19McLaughlin gets ready and throws. Strike two called. Outside corner. Slider. One ball, two strikes to Allen.
- 11:31Allen is third in the American League in batting behind Joe Rudy of Oakland and Richie Shinebloom of Kansas City.
- 11:40Here's the pitch. Ball outside. So it's two and two to Richie Allen. White strikes with a thread here.
- 11:52Red strikes, corner play gets to that double play. They'd rather get two outs here and allow one run to score.
- 11:58Then get a big inning and get behind Wood too many runs. So he's tough.
- 12:05Pitch. Wing and a foul tip out of a glove of pitch. The count is two and two.
- 12:23Two balls, two strikes.
- 12:35McLaughlin ready. He throws. Strike three swinging. He got him with a fast ball.
- 12:41Well, Louis T. Hunt got him on a fast ball out yesterday. So there's one big out there as Richie Allen strikes out.
- 12:49One down and Carlos May comes up. The left fielder, a left-handed batter.
- 12:56He's inning 298 with 10 homers and 56 runs batted in. He was the one who spoiled T. Hunt's no-hit bid in the seventh yesterday.
- 13:07Hit a knuckleball down into left field.
- 13:13McLaughlin looks him over. Pitches, ball high.
- 13:23One ball, no strikes.
- 13:30They swing the bat back and forth and here's the pitch.
- 13:34Foul ball ripped in and out of a Chicago dugout. He had everybody ducking and waving towels. Waving the peace sign out.
- 13:44The truth sign to May. He went for an outside pitch and gunned that up a Chicago dugout.
- 13:53One ball, one strike.
- 14:01There's McLaughlin setting and throwing. Ball outside and the cut is two and one.
- 14:15Two balls, one strike. One out, two on.
- 14:25And the pitch. Strike queen, he went for a breaking pitch. It's now two and two.
- 14:32The infield shortened up the double play depth more so than they were on Richie Allen.
- 14:37With Allen's tremendous power, they were playing back a step or two farther than they do with Carlos May.
- 14:46Figuring with that fast infield, anything that Richie Allen might hit on the ground could get by them had they been shortened up.
- 14:53Here's the pitch. It's outside. Ball three, three and two.
- 15:00Roll count now to May with Mike Andrews on deck.
- 15:13McLaughlin reads the sign. Here's the pitch. Runner going. A chopper to the mound.
- 15:19McLaughlin has a runner caught between third and home. They've got Pat Kelly trapped.
- 15:23He throws to Petra Selly. They put Pat Kelly out. And there's a good play by Lynn McLaughlin.
- 15:29A fielder's choice for May is he tapped one to the mound. The runner with first base jump still was breaking for seconds so he went unmolested.
- 15:36But they caught Pat Kelly halfway between third and home. And he threw to Rico Petra Selly for the out.
- 15:46McLaughlin did just right. He came in, he ran Kelly down and ran him back towards third.
- 15:51And he threw to Petra Selly. Rico slapped the tag on him.
- 15:56So Kelly is out. And now there are two down and runners are at first and second.
- 16:03Mike Andrews up, hitting 220. Six home runs, 32 runs spattered in. Right-handed hitter.
- 16:10John Stone at second base, May at first. Here it is. And it's inside for a ball.
- 16:22Runners at first and third on a ground ball usually the runner at third will break and try to break up any double play attempt.
- 16:28But this time the ball did not get past the pitcher. Usually he has to wait and see if the ball goes by the mound then he breaks.
- 16:35But he broke very soon that time and was caught. Of course that did have hurt a double play. But it also knocked off a runner.
- 16:53Sometimes a runner as fast as Kelly would have a chance to zigzag back and forth on the line and try to allow the other runner, John Stone,
- 17:01to get over to third base before being tagged out. But the glove inflated so well that Kelly couldn't dance much.
- 17:11One and 0 to Mike Andrews. Here comes strike swinging. Foul tip out of the glove.
- 17:17One ball, one strike.
- 17:30One and one. Two out, two on.
- 17:39The set and the pitch. A little pop-up in the infield. Petracelli coming in, flips the glasses down, has it right next to the mound and McLaughlin gets out of a jam.
- 17:49Pitches his way beautifully out of a mess and the strike thoughts have no run. One hit and two left. After one inning, no score.

- 19:02In the second inning, Reggie Smith will be first up for the Red Sox. She'll be followed by Rico Petruselli and then Carlson Smith.
- 19:10And we'll have a station break along the way. This is Red Sox Baseball.
- 19:14You're listening to WTIC in Hartford, Connecticut where starting tomorrow, you'll hear live reports throughout the day and evening from the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach.
- 19:30Reggie Smith walking to the plate against Wilbur Wood in the second inning of a scoreless game.
- 19:36Wood took down the Red Sox easily in the first inning in order.
- 19:40But Rodman had the first two men get on against him and got out of trouble, did not score against him.
- 19:45Woody fishing to Smith and Reggie takes it low ball one.
- 19:50Smith is hitting 275. 15 home runs, 52 runs batted in.
- 19:56Batting right against Wilbur Wood.
- 20:02Reggie hits one up in the air foul out of play along the first baseline.
- 20:07One ball, one strike. Smith is hitting 429 on this road trip.
- 20:119th and 21 trips to the plate. Four home runs and 10 RBI's. All of that production in Texas.
- 20:22And he tries to punch the knuckleball and misses it entirely, like two.
- 20:27Reggie was shortening up hoping to drop one down that third baseline with Fizio playing very deep.
- 20:33But he didn't make connection with the dancing dazzling knuckleball of Wilbur Wood.
- 20:39Pitch, strike three, swinging.
- 20:44And it is thrown to first base as Reggie started up the line carrying the bat.
- 20:51The ball was dropped by Herman and he had to throw to first base.
- 20:56So twice the knuckleball has struck out a Red Sox batter already.
- 20:59Twice Herman has dropped it and had to throw to first.
- 21:02Rico Petracelli is up.
- 21:08Rico hitting 254. Looks at a strike.
- 21:13Twelve homers and 56 runs batted in for Petracelli.
- 21:21Backs away and it's inside ball one. One ball, one strike.
- 21:33Here's a line drive. May hit the left field.
- 21:36Petracelli is singling sharply to left.
- 21:38Ball picked up by Carlos May and throws into Alvarado.
- 21:42There's the first Red Sox hit.
- 21:45Rico just meeting the ball nicely and lining it out there.
- 21:48The wind this afternoon is blowing in toward home plate.
- 21:52Normally a knuckleball is more effective when it is thrown against the wind.
- 21:56We'll see how wood he does. Of course when it's good, when it's going good anyway,
- 22:00why it doesn't make much difference.
- 22:02But usually it's more effective against the wind than with it.
- 22:06Today is so far it is with the wind.
- 22:10Carlson's fist is up, batting 298. 18 homeruns, 44 runs batted in.
- 22:29Wood looks in for the sign.
- 22:33He's in for the finishes and it's inside ball one.
- 22:44Overwood lost one game this year.
- 22:46One nothing on a homerun to Harmon Killabrew.
- 22:50He's lost a bunch of and one low scoring games.
- 22:54Big swing and a miss.
- 22:55Ball gets behind to Herman.
- 22:57Down to second goes Petracelli with a try that he doesn't need.
- 23:00He's going to get the ball thrown.
- 23:03The pass ball charged to Ed Herman.
- 23:06Herman deserves a little medal of honor anyway for having to catch the knuckleballer of Wilbur Wood.
- 23:18And now he's got three knuckleballers on his staff to handle.
- 23:23Acosta and Eddie Fisher.
- 23:25Fisher will work the second game.
- 23:27He's won the right center field up in the air.
- 23:30It's going to drop in there.
- 23:31Way out she goes.
- 23:32Takes one hop into the old bullpen.
- 23:34A ground rule double.
- 23:36And Petracelli scores the first run.
- 23:38One nothing red stock on fifth.
- 23:40Double to right center field.
- 23:43He got good wood on that.
- 23:45It takes a big hop on the warning pass out there and bounced over that short fence which used to be guarding the bullpen area.
- 23:53So it's a ground rule double and a run batted in for fifth is 45th of the season.
- 23:58And the red stocks have a one nothing lead.
- 24:03Petracelli's scoring from second after going to second base on the pass ball.
- 24:08He's allowed two bases on the double.
- 24:10So it's one nothing red stock.
- 24:15The batter is Andy Costco who's hitting 238 on the year.
- 24:18Six homers and 13 RBI's.
- 24:20This is his second time at bat in a red stock uniform.
- 24:24Takes a pitch inside and that's all is blocked by Herman.
- 24:28Woody having a little bit of difficulty with that pitch is dipping low.
- 24:33Costco got in as a pinch hitter in Texas and hit the first pitch to fly ball to right field.
- 24:40So he's over one as a member of the red stock.
- 24:44The pitch to him.
- 24:46Inside ball two.
- 24:48Two and nothing.
- 24:55Fisk is second base one out one run in.
- 25:01Wood looks back to second base and throws.
- 25:03Powerball back.
- 25:06Two balls one strike.
- 25:10Cleveland leads Oakland three nothing in the fourth inning at Cleveland.
- 25:17Wood ready for the sign.
- 25:24Throw inside again to Costco.
- 25:28It's three and one to Andy.
- 25:32Three balls one strike two out one out rather.
- 25:39The pitch on deck hitter is Bill Gagliano.
- 25:49Full count three and two.
- 25:55Play Andy the steps to left and deep.
- 25:58Here it is.
- 25:59Strike three is swinging.
- 26:01He's out of there.
- 26:02Andy Costco strikes out.
- 26:05Three and one would came in with two good knuckleballs and had Andy twinging at both of them.
- 26:12That is Wood's third strikeout.
- 26:17Bill Gagliano coming up batting 270.
- 26:20No homers eight runs batted in.
- 26:23Prime pinch hitter in the red stock.
- 26:29One strike calls.
- 26:38Philadelphia one Houston nothing after five.
- 26:41Greg Luthinski homer for the field.
- 26:45There's a pitch low to Gagliano one ball one strike.
- 26:49The walkie-fail to score on the top of the first at Kansas City.
- 26:52Atlanta and Montreal underway no score after one Cincinnati nothing New York nothing in the third.
- 26:58Here's the pitch.
- 27:00A chopper towards third maybe double but picked up there by Spezio he throws Gagliano out.
- 27:07Gagliano downing out third to first and that's all for the red stock.
- 27:11An unerred run comes in because a pass ball got set for celly to second from whence he scored on a double.
- 27:18A ground roll double one run on two hits.
- 27:21No errors there was a pass ball and one man left after an inning and a half one nothing bombs him.
- 27:27You're on the beach on the weekend on a hard spiking pick up volleyball team.
- 27:36We got this there.
- 27:39Let's go.
- 27:40That's a surefire way to pick up a red hot dirt or more than one beer.
- 27:45After a couple of hours of hot sun and hot sand you're ready for a couple of frosty cold beers.
- 27:54That's why you're ready for a shaker.
- 27:57Every glass of shaker brings you flavor that never fades.
- 28:08Pleasure that goes right on being first, sweet, crisp and bright first glass to last.
- 28:14So set yourself up to a couple of frosty cold shakers.
- 28:18Brothers you've got it coming.
- 28:20A shaker is the one day to have when you're passing more than one.
- 28:34Lynn McLaughlin will face Ed Feasio, Ed Herman and Louis Alvarado in the Chicago second inning.
- 28:41Red stock leading one nothing.
- 28:44The first two men got on in the first inning. Kelly with a walk and then he went the third on a single by John Stone but McLaughlin did not let them score.
- 28:54There's a strike call to the right-handed hitting Feasio whose average is 267.
- 29:00Two homers, 12 RBI.
- 29:06Here's the pitch and there's a fling in a miss.
- 29:09Nothing in two.
- 29:14No balls, two strikes, two Feasio.
- 29:22Wind up in delivery, foul ball out of play down along the first baseline toward the upper deck.
- 29:35Nothing in two.
- 29:39Pitch, high ball one.
- 29:43One ball, two strikes.
- 29:56Now the pitch.
- 29:57Ed gets away from everybody over fifth, low, ball two.
- 30:01Two in two.
- 30:05Red stock will go from here to Kansas City.
- 30:09Tuesday they'll play Tuesday night and Wednesday night.
- 30:17Then come home.
- 30:19There's a ground ball.
- 30:21That's rather a line drive taken by Caterin first. Nice play by Danny.
- 30:26Started out to be, it was if it was going to hit the ground but it did never did.
- 30:31Danny Cater made a dive for it from deep at first base and stabbed it before it hit the ground.
- 30:37Feasio lining to Caterin on a good play.
- 30:43Ed Herman up, the catcher. Left-handed batter.
- 30:47Fifth talking to McLaughlin at the mound.
- 30:59Red stocks ahead in this game, one nothing.
- 31:02This is the bottom of the second inning.
- 31:04Game one of a double head of this afternoon at the Michigan Park, Chicago.
- 31:11Very missy at the foggy hour on Chicago.
- 31:15Smoggy day.
- 31:18The pitch is down low to Herman, ball one.
- 31:21You hardly see some of the big buildings on the skyline from here downtown.
- 31:26Those are a miss.
- 31:28The pitch is low, ball two.
- 31:31Two and nothing to Herman.
- 31:41McLaughlin throws swinging strikes, went for a fast ball. Two balls, one strike.
- 31:50The sun never has been fully out today.
- 31:53It's been trying to break through but there's a light overcast.
- 31:59Pitch. Ground foul, rip, pass, first base.
- 32:06Two balls, two strikes.
- 32:18There is the pitch. Foul.
- 32:26Two balls, two strikes.
- 32:37McLaughlin kicks and delivers high ball three, three and two.
- 32:42The outfield is pulled well around the right on Herman, who has some power on the left side.
- 32:49Right side of the infield is deep.
- 32:54The pitch. Ground ball to Cader, backhand is knocked it down, picks it up,
- 32:59underhanded to McLaughlin for the out.
- 33:02So Daddy Cader throws to McLaughlin, three to one. The play goes on Herman.
- 33:07There are two down and a second inning.
- 33:09Here's Louis Alvarado, shortstop for the White Sox.
- 33:14Adding 237, two homers and 23 runs batted in.
- 33:28Alvarado, a right handed batter, formerly with the Red Sox.
- 33:41The ball wind up by McLaughlin, the pitch is inside to M-Ball one.
- 33:53One ball, no strikes. Here it is.
- 33:55High ball two, two and nothing.
- 34:05Two outs, nobody on base.
- 34:07Here's Alvarado, the number eight hitter. Here it is.
- 34:11Bowel tips this one, strike one, two and one.
- 34:15Wilbur Wood is on deck.
- 34:28McLaughlin's arm around the pitch is rammed sharply, has shortstop in the left field, base it.
- 34:36For Louis Alvarado, the second White Sox hit, bringing to the plate Wilbur Wood.
- 34:43Woodie is batting 156.
- 34:46He has been to that 90 times this year officially, with 14 hits.
- 34:51He's batted in four runs, the right handed hitter.
- 34:58Alvarado at first, the look over there and the pitch to Wood is a strike call, fast ball.
- 35:12Now the set, here it is.
- 35:15Curved strike call, a slider really. One ball, or no ball, two strikes.
- 35:26The pause by McLaughlin, the look down the pitch.
- 35:28Strike three, call, slider on the outside corner, no contest there.
- 35:32Wilbur Wood is out on strikes, and that's number two for McLaughlin.
- 35:36In the second inning, no runs, one hit and one left.
- 35:40After two innings of play, the Red Sox won, the White Sox nothing.
- 35:45Joy is a love of black, joy is red, black, fair, red, black. Joy, joy, joy, coming through.
- 35:57Are you and me? Joy is a clear and bright, sweet and long, and nice isn't nice.
- 36:05Joy is a clearance price and a great car, like Tim of Fury, at your Chrysler Pima Steelers.
- 36:11Joy, joy, joy, joy, coming through.
- 36:16Tim of Fury is a joy cut as big and roomy.
- 36:18That was beautiful.
- 36:19Still to be a great car, backed by service.
- 36:22To keep it a great car.
- 36:23More than that joy is a cleanup deal.
- 36:25This doesn't clean you out.
- 36:26At your Chrysler Pima Steelers.
- 36:29Joy, joy, joy, coming through. Joy, joy, when you're in your stride. Joy, joy, joy.
- 36:48Into the third inning in this first game we go, with the Red Sox holding a one to nothing lead.
- 36:54On a single by Petra Felly, a pass ball by Catcher Herman, and a ground rule double by Carlton Fett.
- 37:00The Red Sox up in the third with Lynn McLaughlin coming to the plate. Dave Martin to the right.
- 37:05Thank you Ned. McLaughlin left hand hitter leads off in a pretty good hitting pitcher.
- 37:10Once made eight hits in 33 times up, that's a 242 average left hand hitter.
- 37:16Buffy against Buffy here is Wood.
- 37:18Pitches in the first pitch he strokes a foul ball off to the left, and it kind of strikes one out of play.
- 37:24Oh, a fan in the first row of the box, he flamed over for the ball, and what's your expression on that, Ned?
- 37:34You get an expression for that.
- 37:36When you summer saw the almost, you go out of the field.
- 37:40There's a pitch and there's a swing and a foul.
- 37:42Something over something you say.
- 37:44Oh yeah. Tailgate over 10 times.
- 37:47I never heard that.
- 37:49That fan just about did that.
- 37:51Right next to the White Sox dug up.
- 37:53Counter strike two now, he fouled off the next pitch.
- 37:56Here's the line up in the next pitch.
- 37:58There's a swing and he hits a bouncing ball to third.
- 38:00Up to the ball is Fizio.
- 38:02Go to first and he's out.
- 38:03Flapping an easy out.
- 38:04Fizio to Allen.
- 38:11There's one gone and it brings up Tommy Harper.
- 38:14The fan was leaning over the railing for the foul ball and there's a thing to stay on the, on his side of the railing.
- 38:22He almost involuntarily wound up, squirreled out on the field.
- 38:31But he got the foul ball.
- 38:33Here's Tommy Harper and the pitch a spike call to the inside corner of Spike One.
- 38:44Spike One on Harper, he's down to the third the first time up.
- 38:47Here's the ball inside, he turns away from it.
- 38:50Down with one and one.
- 38:52Wilbur Wood on the mound won 22 games last year, 21 so far this year as a chance at 30.
- 38:59Here's the one-one pitch to Hyper.
- 39:03Ball is up high, ball to Spike One on Harper.
- 39:07Reds track speak wood on the 6th of June.
- 39:13Tommy Bieber on the Reds track speak, he's shooting out.
- 39:18White and a miss.
- 39:21Another knuckleball, that would look like it was on the outside corner.
- 39:25Hyper went for the miss, ball to Spike Two.
- 39:28He came back to beat the Reds track on June 17th, 5 to 4.
- 39:33He had to release help from Terry Forster that day.
- 39:39Here's a check swing and the ball hits his back to his foul, a foul step from the counter to his two.
- 39:45This is Wood's 37th start of the year.
- 39:49Wilbur Wood, you know, isn't doing what the early hails from Bellmont, Massachusetts,
- 39:53originally signed with the Reds track.
- 39:56He's going to pitch for it and finally to the White Sox.
- 39:59Here's the fly ball deep to left, way back, Bay back, back, he's there, he's got it.
- 40:07Tommy Hyper gave that ball a ride and he had to supply all the power.
- 40:12Got a hold of a knuckleball, but Harlow's Bay backed up on the warning track.
- 40:18Got two steps from the wall, perhaps.
- 40:21Well back on the warning track and pulled it down, but that's two out of the wings of Louis Apparicio.
- 40:28Tommy got a hold of one, might have been a fast ball, would have been out of here.
- 40:35Apparicio struck out the first time out.
- 40:37Here's the liner in the left field, that's going to be trouble bounces, and pass Bay all the way to the wall.
- 40:43Apparicio pulls up a second with a double.
- 40:46Bay finally throws it back in, got a good throw into third base, but he mails it,
- 40:51get over there in time to cut it off.
- 40:53The ball is in between Bay and the line, and bumps past Bay to the wall.
- 40:59Starts with two banker for Apparicio, brings up the initiator.
- 41:03Before he steps in, will pause for station identification. This is Red Sox baseball.
- 41:07Sunny this afternoon, clear and becoming cool tonight, lows in the 50s.
- 41:11Sunny and warm tomorrow, right now on Constitution Plaza, 80 degrees.
- 41:15It's three o'clock on WTIC in Hightford.
- 41:23First pitch to Cater, a swing and a miss, strike one.
- 41:26Cater, grounded his shorts the first time up.
- 41:30And on second base now with two outs for the Red Sox, and a half of the third, the score is one and up.
- 41:36The Red Sox leads. Here's the pitch.
- 41:39Inside for a ball.
- 41:41So it's one and one on Cater. Cater sat out yesterday's game.
- 41:45He was benched for... like a pitting recently, has been hitting a lot.
- 41:54Second base for Andrew, keeping Apparicio.
- 41:57Orade ran all the way over to second, now is back in his position as the pitcher comes in with a delivery.
- 42:01Here's a looping fly ball, but the shortstop Alvarado backs up and grabs it for the low fly hit by Cater.
- 42:07Bucks by Alvarado in short left. No runs in one hit, one man left.
- 42:12The middle of the third, score is lost in one, the White Sox nothing.
- 42:16You know, one of the really great things in life is when you walk into a store and buy something big,
- 42:22like a sewing machine or a new TV set, and the salesman asks,
- 42:27how would you like to finance that?
- 42:29And very nonchalantly you say, I'll pay cash.
- 42:33And suddenly you can feel everyone thinking, wow, Ruff has a little something for the inner man.
- 42:40And that's what a personal loan from Hartford National can do for you.
- 42:44Give you the good feeling of having money in your pocket for just about anything you need or want.
- 42:49It can do a good deal more than that though.
- 42:52It can save you cold, hard cash because the payments are tailored to your budget.
- 42:58A personal loan from Hartford National, it makes you ten feet tall.
- 43:03Ask about it at Hartford National.
- 43:06We're with you all the way.
- 43:09Hartford National Bank.
- 43:11We're with you all the way.
- 43:16Good evening.
- 43:25The Detroit Tigers scored two runs on the first inning in the elite California two-to-nothing after one.
- 43:30Bill Slavak going for Detroit today and Bideskitter right for the Angel.
- 43:35Yankees one last night, Baltimore also one last night.
- 43:40Detroit and the Red Sox won yesterday afternoon.
- 43:44The Tigers still lead Baltimore by a half game with Yankees two games out of the Red Sox three and a half games out.
- 43:54First man up now for the White Sox.
- 43:57And the last half of the third is the leadoff man, Pat Kelly.
- 44:04Kelly Elluston-Hitter will walk the first time up.
- 44:07Lynn McLaughlin lining up here's the first pitch, ball is high, ball on a fast ball.
- 44:14Bidescox with Costco at left field today, Harper and Center and Smith and Wright.
- 44:21There's the lineup and here comes the pitch to Kelly.
- 44:24It's a curve strike call, the beauty over the heart of the plate. Thanks to one and one.
- 44:29Kelly stands way up in the batter's backs and kind of leans over the plate.
- 44:36I'm going to crouch, here's a ball of high, ball to Spike Walnut, good fast ball at the time.
- 44:41A lot of mustard on it, but just out of the strike zone.
- 44:46Center fielder, Harper a little bit in the left center for Kelly Elluston-Hitter.
- 44:54Strike call, pass ball on the inside corner, good pitch by McLaughlin.
- 44:59Two and two to count, Lynn made perhaps his weakest start in his last start.
- 45:06And a consistently good starting pitcher.
- 45:09Since his recall late in June, here's the two-two pitch, it's a ball of high, ball free strike two.
- 45:15And Rothen has a finer run average of 2.62. This is the first time he's pitched against Chicago.
- 45:24Ball free strike two on Kelly, nobody on or out in the last of the third, one that up in Redstrikes lead.
- 45:30Here's the line up of the pitch, swing and a miss, strike three, Kelly goes down on strike.
- 45:36All the way around and missed it, breaking ball. That's the third strikeout for Lynn McLaughlin.
- 45:42That brings up the center fielder, Jay Johnstone.
- 45:48Congratulations to Zayer, they're opening a new store at Water and Main Streets in Averill tomorrow.
- 45:54And all stores in the greater Boston area in the High Ennis, Worcester and Manchester are joining in a grand opening celebration.
- 46:01New store, a new Zayers store in Averill.
- 46:07Now Walker tells me it's Averill, Averill.
- 46:11H-A-V-E-R-H-I-L-L, here's the pitch, it's a strike call to Johnstone.
- 46:23Strike on Johnstone, strike one, here's the line up of the next pitch, hit the ball high one and one.
- 46:28Johnstone, single to right the first time up his second head of the series at a home run with two men on Friday night.
- 46:36Much damn better.
- 46:41Averill is a strike, it's called a breaking ball, it's over the high of the plate ball, one strike two.
- 46:48Tommy Harper now is moved into right center for Johnstone.
- 46:54Smith moved over a couple of steps toward the line and right field playing deep, playing Johnstone to pull the ball.
- 47:00He has good power, here's the line up and the pitch, hits the ball at high and the count is small two, strike two.
- 47:10Max have Petroselli a third, Apparecio a short, Gagliano playing second today, and Kater is first, the batterie McLaughlin in fifth.
- 47:18Here's the line up and the pitch, playing ground ball to second, Gagliano has it, so the first, he's out.
- 47:25Bill came up with the ball cleanly and through the batter up, see Johnstone, that brings up sick Allen.
- 47:34Two out of nobody on for Chicago in the third, Redsack's leading, one to nothing.
- 47:42Here's Allen, who's struck out on us, nobody on for Chicago in the third, Redsack's leading, one to nothing.
- 47:52Here's Allen, who's struck out on a good Mark Fastball the first time up.
- 47:57Allen is now two for eight in this series.
- 48:02Started out with a two for three performance, Friday night, playing in a busy, long wait on a Fastball.
- 48:10Both Tia yesterday and McLaughlin today have been jamming Allen with that Fastball, pitching him high and inside with plenty of heat.
- 48:18They've been getting him out.
- 48:23Down a strike one, here's the pitch to Allen, he's playing good, he misses.
- 48:28Strike two, that was in the same spot, jamming him with a Fastball.
- 48:34Strike two on Allen, Allen uses a big bat, he waves it around like a toothpick, he's very strong,
- 48:40but it's one of the heaviest bats used by anybody in the major leagues, 40 ounces.
- 48:44The pitch, ball is high, ball one strike two, a 40 ounce bat.
- 48:50You know Allen had no swing training this year, took a lot of extra batting practice early in the season,
- 48:56but now doesn't take batting practice at all, there's a swing and a foul fit behind the plate, ball one strike two.
- 49:06Once he feels he's in the groove, so to speak, at the plate, Allen doesn't feel he has to take batting practice, his manager approves of that.
- 49:18It doesn't take it, here's the one-two pitch, he's playing on his strike three, and twice now McLaughlin has struck out Dick Allen,
- 49:24he did it with another Fastball on the inside corner, letter high.
- 49:28Three up, three down, nothing across.
- 49:30That's four strikeouts from McLaughlin and three innings, and at the end of three the Redsack's won Chicago nothing.
- 49:37Cool, clean and serene are the words for summer at Snow Lake Lodge at Mount Snow Vermont.
- 49:43Nestled at the base of Mount Snow, Snow Lake Lodge offers a full range of vacation activities,

- 50:20Nothing to buy, just come in and sign up.
- 50:24The contest ends August 26th.
- 50:40White-backed players were killing under 9 that Allen hasn't taken betting practice since April.
- 50:46Once he got in the groove he figured he didn't need it.
- 50:50He might have to take a little after these last two days the way the Red Sox are pitching him,
- 50:55they're smoking him and giving him good fastballs, good hard fastballs.
- 51:00Inside he's been striking out. Here's the fourth inning down, here's the next.
- 51:04Alright Dave, Reggie Smith first up against Wilbur Wood. The Red Sox have a 1-0 lead.
- 51:10The pitch to Smithy is inside ball one.
- 51:16Reggie, first time up, struck out.
- 51:21Wood kicks to knuckleballs him and a ground ball to shortstop, comes up for Alvarado, throws to first base.
- 51:28Smith is out short to first, 1-0 lead.
- 51:33Rico Petroselli singled and scored in the second inning.
- 51:39The Red Sox have had three hits off Wilbur Wood, including doubles by a fifth canaparicio.
- 51:49Petroselli takes the strike.
- 51:53Good crowd here today, not as big as Friday night, but they'll get 30-35.
- 52:00Ground ball towards the middle, into center field, base hit.
- 52:04One hit that artificial turf and then just took off again, skipping his way out onto the real grass in better.
- 52:11Petroselli is 2-for-2.
- 52:16Four hits now off Woodie.
- 52:24Carlton's fifth.
- 52:28Cowled off in the on-deck circle, getting a cow on his wrists and hands to drive him.
- 52:35And he drove in the only run of the game with a double to right center field in the second inning.
- 52:40And he took one hop into the old bullpen area.
- 52:59Petroselli is now 4-for-9 against Wilbur Wood this year.
- 53:05Left-hander works to fifth.
- 53:07And he's going high towards center field, not too deep.
- 53:10Jay Johnstone is under it.
- 53:12Petroselli playing in half-way.
- 53:14Returns to first as Johnstone makes the catch.
- 53:17Fifth fly into center, and there's two outs.
- 53:22With Andy Coscoe coming to the break, Coscoe struck out his first time.
- 53:27Oakland has scored a run, but it's still Cleveland three Oakland one after five and a half at Cleveland in a single game.
- 53:35Leading California two-nothing after two innings.
- 53:38Milwaukee and Kansas City no score after two.
- 53:42Atlanta and Montreal no score after three.
- 53:46Cincinnati and the Met no score after four and a half at New York.
- 53:51Houston three Philadelphia one after seven.
- 53:55Luzinsky is homeward for Philadelphia, and Sadangio is homeward for Houston.
- 54:00Throw to first base, not in time.
- 54:11Here's the pitch to Coscoe.
- 54:13Ground ball hits foul past third.
- 54:16Just foul of a bag.
- 54:26One strike to Coscoe. Petroselli at first base two outs.
- 54:31Red stocked one. White stocked nothing in this first game.
- 54:37Wood delivers foul out of the glove of Herman.
- 54:42Nothing in two. Coscoe is taking big full swings at the knuckler.
- 54:59Wood gets the sign and throws.
- 55:02Here's a line drive, base hit to left field for Coscoe.
- 55:05Petroselli will hold up a second base.
- 55:08Goes in towards third. Andy Coscoe gets his first hit as a member of the Red Sox.
- 55:13And Boston has letters at first and second, two outs.
- 55:16Phil Gagliano coming up.
- 55:20Five hits now off Wood.
- 55:25Gagliano has had one hit in five trips against Wilbur Wood this year.
- 55:33Petroselli off second, Coscoe off first.
- 55:36The pitch is inside ball one.
- 55:39In the second game, John Curtis will pitch for the Red Sox.
- 55:44And knuckleballer Eddie Fisher for Chicago.
- 55:49Here's the pitch.
- 55:51Fly ball to center field straight away. Back goes John Stone.
- 55:54He's under it. He's got it. Fairly deep in center.
- 55:57And that ends the inning.
- 55:59Two put outs for John Stone in the fourth.
- 56:02No runs, two hits, then two left for the Red Sox. They've stranded four.
- 56:06After three and a half innings, the score is still the Red Sox one and Chicago nothing.
- 56:15Two more games after today's double header on this long road trip.
- 56:19And then the Red Sox will be home for a nine game homestand,
- 56:22which will open with Jimmy Fun Night on August 25th.
- 56:25That will be against the Texas Rangers.
- 56:27All Red Sox proceeds going to the Jimmy Fun
- 56:30and the hitting contest beforehand for former Red Sox players
- 56:34and some radio personalities in the Boston area.
- 56:38Three games each with Texas, Chicago and Kansas City.
- 56:42And of course, in the month of September, the Red Sox will have been home quite a bit
- 56:47with 18 games and several big series with the Tigers, Orioles and Yankees.
- 56:51The right plan as the Red Sox continue to stay up in the American League race
- 56:56while it follows away, the ticket office is a 10-way open from 9 a.m. till 8 p.m.
- 57:01Monday through Friday and from 9 to 5 on Saturdays and Sundays.
- 57:05The Red Sox ticket is available at Fylings in downtown Boston
- 57:09and Fylings Suburb in the store throughout New England.
- 57:18Here we go into the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 57:21The Red Sox holding a slim 1-0 lead over Chicago.
- 57:29The White Sox against Lynn McLaughlin will have
- 57:33Carlos May, Mike Andrews and Ed Feasio at the plate.
- 57:37Carlos May had a field of choice his first time up.
- 57:41Left-handed batter.
- 57:45McGlosson has given up two hits. He has struck out four.
- 57:49And he pitches a strike from the outside corner.
- 57:55Lynn has walked one. That was the original.
- 57:59And he's got a good one.
- 58:03Lynn has walked one. That was the opening batter in the first inning. Pat Kelly.
- 58:15Right arm around and the pitch a fast ball inside.
- 58:19Ball one. One ball, one strike.
- 58:27One-on-one, McLaughlin.
- 58:31The pitch. Foul off out of play. One-on-two.
- 58:35Tuesday night in Kansas City, Marty Patten will face Mike Headlin.
- 58:39And Wednesday night, Sunny Siebert against
- 58:43or Louis Piont against Roger Nelson.
- 58:47Nelson making a fine comeback right-hander for Kansas City.
- 58:531.90 earned on average.
- 58:57May backs out a moment.
- 59:05The pitch. Foul.
- 59:09One-on-two to Carlos May.
- 59:19Red Sox leading here, one to nothing.
- 59:23May sends in against Lynn McLaughlin
- 59:27to get his sign and goes to work.
- 59:31A ground ball to shortstop, a couple of hops to Louis.
- 59:35Those to first in time. Aperishio to Cater. May is out.
- 59:39One away.
- 59:43Here comes Mike Andrews.
- 59:47Popped the third base in the first inning.
- 59:59Mike digs in at home plate now.
- 1:00:07Waiting for McLaughlin's first delivery. Here it comes.
- 1:00:11Ball hide inside, one-on-0.
- 1:00:25Andrews steps again at home plate.
- 1:00:29McLaughlin fires and misses inside again, ball two.
- 1:00:35Two-on-nothing.
- 1:00:39White Sox hits have been by Alvarado and John Stone.
- 1:00:43Those singles.
- 1:00:47McLaughlin delivering two-on-0.
- 1:00:51Ball three, a fast ball inside. He's worked Andrews' close all the way.
- 1:00:55Three balls, no strike.
- 1:00:59It's Beasio on deck.
- 1:01:033-0 pitch to Andrews.
- 1:01:07Ball four, low. And on four pitches Andrews walks.
- 1:01:11Second walk given up by McLaughlin.
- 1:01:15White Sox have a runner with one out of the fourth.
- 1:01:19It's Beasio the batter. He lines to Cater who made a good play on him in the second inning.
- 1:01:23Ball.
- 1:01:35And Beasio at the plate and
- 1:01:39Nancy with a laughing face down playing the organ in the stand plays Phenically Phenically.
- 1:01:43For him.
- 1:01:47Beasio right handed batter.
- 1:01:51And the pitch, a pitch out, nobody going anywhere.
- 1:01:55They thought they had something smoke that maybe Andrews would be moving or they'd possibly try to put on a hit and run.
- 1:01:59But Andrews was holding.
- 1:02:03Ball one.
- 1:02:07The pitch. Fly ball to right field. Reggie Smith coming in.
- 1:02:11He's there, he's got it. Two outs.
- 1:02:15Andrews returns to first and the batter at the plate
- 1:02:19will be Ed Herman the catcher. Left handed batter.
- 1:02:23Herman grounded out to Cater in the second inning.
- 1:02:37Red Sox ahead. One nothing if you just joined us. They got their run.
- 1:02:41In the second inning on a single by Petra Selly.
- 1:02:45Pass ball and a double by fifth.
- 1:02:49The gloss in pitches to Herman hangs the curve outside.
- 1:02:53Ball one.
- 1:02:57Now the set and the pitch.
- 1:03:01Pass ball a little low. Two and nothing to Herman.
- 1:03:05The number seven hitter in the order. Alvarado on deck.
- 1:03:09The number seven hitter in the order.
- 1:03:13Alvarado on deck.
- 1:03:25Looking for the sign now. McLaughlin
- 1:03:29ready himself and pitches. Bowled off.
- 1:03:33Two balls, one strike. Not a bad time right now
- 1:03:37would you say for a tall cold glass of Shaper Beer
- 1:03:41to the one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 1:03:49Two and one. Count to Ed Herman.
- 1:03:53Stitch. Bowled it back. Then the count is two and two.
- 1:03:57Andrews at first base. Two outs.
- 1:04:01One.
- 1:04:09With Herman up there, the second base in the field
- 1:04:13Gagliano is halfway between first and second right on the edge of the outfield grass.
- 1:04:17He's playing very deep. Appareechu is almost directly behind second.
- 1:04:21They play Herman as a dead-pull hitter. Pitch inside.
- 1:04:25A bluff to first by Fisk and a slide back on his stomach by Andrews.
- 1:04:29He's looking out to the batter Herman. Andrews will be off with a pitch.
- 1:04:33Two outs.
- 1:04:41There's a set by McLaughlin. The pitch
- 1:04:45and a ground ball to Cater who had backed up nicely and plays it
- 1:04:49on the bag alone for the out. Cater had been holding against Andrews.
- 1:04:53He backed up deep and the ball had right to him. So Herman grounds to Cater
- 1:04:57and it's no run for the White Sox. No hits and one left.
- 1:05:01They've spent it four. After four innings of play, the Red Sox lead
- 1:05:05one to nothing. Taylor Rental Centers not only rent things for parties

- 1:06:13The gun down to the fifth inning. The Red Sox holding a one nothing lead.
- 1:06:17They have five hits off Wilburwood. Two of them doubles. One by a fifth
- 1:06:21drove in the run and one by Apparecio in the third.
- 1:06:25Fifth drove the run in in the second inning. Then McLawson has allowed
- 1:06:29two singles. First man up in the fifth is McLawson and back today.
- 1:06:33Thank you Ned. Here's McLawson who grounded out the first time up
- 1:06:37at the ground ball to the third base of the speciot and was thrown out. Here's a swing
- 1:06:41and a miss on the racquet ball, Frank Watt.
- 1:06:45Outfield not too deep but in shape it'll work for McLawson batting left handed.
- 1:06:49Here's the pitch of swing and he
- 1:06:53smokes a fly ball into deep right center. Kelly going back
- 1:06:57and he alters it in.
- 1:07:01McLawson hit that ball well in a long way. Kelly
- 1:07:05in a long run for it. Cut it with his both hands. Running to his right
- 1:07:09and back towards the wall.
- 1:07:13One out of rings up Tommy Harper.
- 1:07:17Red Sacks have made five hits and they're leading in the game
- 1:07:21one to nothing. Harper is hit less than two times at bat.
- 1:07:25Lined up by Wilbur O'odhamly
- 1:07:29delivery and not a ball inside ball one.
- 1:07:37One and all on Harper. Apparecio will be next.
- 1:07:41Red Sacks go around in the second inning. Here's the line up now
- 1:07:45by Wood. Here's the delivery. A swing and a high hopper.
- 1:07:49It's fouled down the third base line. A ball and counters one and one.
- 1:07:53The second inning with one out. Petra Selle single went to second on a pass
- 1:07:57ball by Herman and scored on a one ground roll
- 1:08:01double to right center field by Carlton Fist. The ball bounced over the
- 1:08:05outfield fence. The fence in right center.
- 1:08:09One one it's the ball inside ball two strike one
- 1:08:13down and count on Harper. Ed Herman
- 1:08:17is catching wood and Herman is
- 1:08:21on a good job. He is a good knuckleball catcher. He always catches when
- 1:08:25Wood pitches. Playing here is a low
- 1:08:29flying left field dropping in for a hit. Carlos Lay up for the ball
- 1:08:33and Tommy Harper has his first hit and hit number six off Wilbur Wood.
- 1:08:37Red Sacks
- 1:08:41doing a good job with that knuckleball or just stroking the ball
- 1:08:45trying to meet it. That's what you have to do against the knuckleball
- 1:08:49catcher. If you swing from the heels, make those big cuts.
- 1:08:53The knuckleball catcher will usually beat you. If you just try to meet the ball
- 1:08:57you have more success with the knuckleball.
- 1:09:01Here's that for each young. He has one hit a double for
- 1:09:05spike call to the outside corner of spike line.
- 1:09:09Louis Appardichio is now three for nine
- 1:09:13in this series. Getting his hits consistently still playing with
- 1:09:17a taped up figure. The thing that was dislocated in Milwaukee
- 1:09:21eight weeks ago. Back in the lineup now a little over two weeks.
- 1:09:25Pike the first space in my first back.
- 1:09:29Ah!
- 1:09:33Now he's all set again. Here's a pike the first again and he is
- 1:09:37back. Both times Harper went back standing. Wood has a
- 1:09:41good motion to first base. He has picked twelve men off first base this year.
- 1:09:45That's a lot.
- 1:09:49Thomas Reich won. Now he steps off the
- 1:09:53rubber. Doesn't make a throw but he's just left foot off the rubber.
- 1:09:57Now he brings his arms to his waist.
- 1:10:01And another throw to first. Harper is back.
- 1:10:05Three times now he's going over there.
- 1:10:09Harper has fifteen stolen bases this year.
- 1:10:13Still another pike.
- 1:10:17Tommy's going back in each time. Standing up. He's not having
- 1:10:21to dive back in.
- 1:10:25But he does sometimes now he edges
- 1:10:29off to a lead. There he goes.
- 1:10:33He's out. So the second base. He is out.
- 1:10:37Herman to Andrew.
- 1:10:41Harper is arguing with the second base umpire. I plan
- 1:10:45to go ahead and do it.
- 1:10:49That was smoked out pretty well. Wood threw the first four
- 1:10:53times. Finally throw a pitch to the plate.
- 1:10:57Harper is still hollering at the umpire. Now he turns and trots toward the dugout.
- 1:11:01Finally Wood threw a pitch. Herman
- 1:11:04had called for a pitch out. Made a perfect throw to Andrews. The second base
- 1:11:07and Harper was called out. It was a close play.
- 1:11:11Appalachio takes the next pitch inside
- 1:11:15for a ball two and one.
- 1:11:19Tommy thought he had the bag.
- 1:11:23Here's the two one. Playing
- 1:11:27a ball. There's a hot foul right back in the plate.
- 1:11:31In front of us on the screen the count is two and two. Our vantage point
- 1:11:35at Chicago is way up high and directly behind home plate.
- 1:11:39Probably the highest press box in the league.
- 1:11:43Play up to the second base. Here's a high
- 1:11:47foul fly ball to catch. Herman has his mask off. He's coming back.
- 1:11:51He's bent the ball for the umpire.
- 1:11:55He's coming from the railing behind the plate in foul territory.
- 1:11:59No arms and one hit. Nobody left. At the end of the top of the fifth
- 1:12:03inning the score is still the Red Sox one in Chicago nothing.
- 1:12:07Just a piece of one.
- 1:12:11The one bit of half.
- 1:12:15The one bit of half in more than one.
- 1:12:19So much fun.

- 1:13:50number one in the first and the single to Alvarado in the second inning he's left two badgers.
- 1:13:54No damage so far against him there's a swing in a miss thank
- 1:13:59you up
- 1:14:03a one
- 1:14:06a play
- 1:14:10a ball outside I think at one of our men
- 1:14:16the red side seems to have a
- 1:14:18weakness on top five balls.
- 1:14:22Long off but it's going to be
- 1:14:23fouled out on the left field
- 1:14:24line lands in the upper deck but
- 1:14:26he pulled it way fouled.
- 1:14:32Tata Pinsen is home for the
- 1:14:33Angels fourth inning nobody on
- 1:14:35it now.
- 1:14:37Two to one in favor of
- 1:14:38Detroit over California.
- 1:14:42Going high fly left field is
- 1:14:43deep.
- 1:14:44Haskell going way back back
- 1:14:46E leaked up but landed in the
- 1:14:48lower deck at the home run.
- 1:14:51Haskell leaked up and could not
- 1:14:52quite reach it.
- 1:14:55Oh that's a long leap.
- 1:14:58The home run for Alvarado
- 1:14:59ties up the game at one in large
- 1:15:17that's the third home run this
- 1:15:18year for William Alvarado.
- 1:15:20He just did reach the left field
- 1:15:21lower deck along with nine feet
- 1:15:28high is three fifty two down the
- 1:15:29line.
- 1:15:32Went away left field.
- 1:15:36A Wilbur Wood.
- 1:15:39That's right after the home run
- 1:15:43what is batting right handed.
- 1:15:45Pretty good hitting pitcher
- 1:15:46got a ball one on wood.
- 1:15:52What all a ball hide two and
- 1:15:54nothing.
- 1:15:57What beat no one Ryan with a
- 1:16:01beat set about a week ago a
- 1:16:02week or so ago a single beat
- 1:16:04no one Ryan one or nothing.
- 1:16:06Here's the pitch.
- 1:16:07Biting high and count is ball
- 1:16:09two like one.
- 1:16:18That's all my call to me outside
- 1:16:19corner two and two.
- 1:16:21Andy Casco really gave it the
- 1:16:23old college try out there.
- 1:16:28There's a fight call.
- 1:16:30What is that three straight
- 1:16:31call strikes after the first two
- 1:16:33pitches were called balls.
- 1:16:35What is that on strike.
- 1:16:36Strikeout number five for
- 1:16:38Lynn McLaughlin.
- 1:16:41Wings up the lead off man Pat
- 1:16:42Kelly.
- 1:16:47One out there is nine feet high
- 1:16:49and Casco who is it.
- 1:16:52Must be about six one or two
- 1:16:54or three.
- 1:16:56He's a small like he fell
- 1:16:57at least as high as he could go
- 1:16:58to try to spear that ball.
- 1:17:01It just did make the lower
- 1:17:03deck in the seats for home run
- 1:17:04off the bed of Alvarado.
- 1:17:07It's not a Kelly is the wall
- 1:17:08it's high ball.
- 1:17:14Probably have a new game
- 1:17:15tied up one and one.
- 1:17:18Redsack lead in the
- 1:17:19hip department.
- 1:17:20Six to three.
- 1:17:21Line drive to center field
- 1:17:22base hit.
- 1:17:23There's Harper taking it off
- 1:17:24and Pat Kelly has his first
- 1:17:26in the game a single to center.
- 1:17:28Hit number four on Lynn McLaughlin.
- 1:17:30First time he's allowed two hits
- 1:17:31in the same inning.
- 1:17:34Wings up Jay Johnson.
- 1:17:40That was Kelly's fourth in the
- 1:17:41series.
- 1:17:44At the first three in the
- 1:17:45Friday night game.
- 1:17:47One by the White Sox eight to
- 1:17:48one.
- 1:17:50The Redsack came back behind
- 1:17:51Pia yesterday to win the
- 1:17:52lead off.
- 1:17:56Johnstone up there now.
- 1:17:57Dangerous left hand hitter.
- 1:17:58He has good power.
- 1:18:01And up twice today and he has
- 1:18:02one hit.
- 1:18:05What are going there's the goal
- 1:18:06by best key is out.
- 1:18:09At the retail put it right on.
- 1:18:12Pat Kelly who has 28 stolen
- 1:18:13bases this year took off with
- 1:18:15the first pitch to Jay Johnson.
- 1:18:17The pitch was inside.
- 1:18:19Best did not have a real good
- 1:18:20throwing position after taking
- 1:18:22the pitch but he made a good
- 1:18:24throw at a Louis Amper ratio
- 1:18:25at second base.
- 1:18:26They put it on him for the out.
- 1:18:29Kelly is cut down trying to
- 1:18:30feel the count is all one.
- 1:18:33On Jay Johnson.
- 1:18:40Now the lineup of the next
- 1:18:41pitch way outside of all makes
- 1:18:42it two and nothing.
- 1:18:48Two and nothing to count.
- 1:18:49This got to talk to my
- 1:18:50glasses.
- 1:18:51Now the two battery mates on the
- 1:18:53mound talking things over.
- 1:19:01Johnstone has not been having a
- 1:19:02good year at the play.
- 1:19:05Last year he had 16 home runs
- 1:19:06this year he could only
- 1:19:07play the game.
- 1:19:09He had a good time.
- 1:19:11He had a good time.
- 1:19:12He had a good time.
- 1:19:13He had a good time.
- 1:19:15He had a good time.
- 1:19:16He had a good time.
- 1:19:18He had a good time.
- 1:19:19He had 16 home runs this year
- 1:19:20he could only three.
- 1:19:22Putting the money at Friday
- 1:19:23night.
- 1:19:24Here's the ball outside ball
- 1:19:25three three and nothing.
- 1:19:34Three and nothing count on
- 1:19:35Johnstone.
- 1:19:38Two outs nobody on a run in
- 1:19:39it's one one outside up.
- 1:19:43And the three open.
- 1:19:45Four four inside he walked.
- 1:19:46One number three.
- 1:19:48On the top and it rings up to
- 1:19:49talent.
- 1:19:55My passing just walked a 181
- 1:19:56hitter.
- 1:20:01There's now one of the most
- 1:20:02dangerous hitters in the league.
- 1:20:04He's been up twice today and
- 1:20:05both times he's struck out.
- 1:20:08And a pattern Louis T.
- 1:20:09on use.
- 1:20:11Yesterday picking Alan and a
- 1:20:12pattern McLaughlin is using
- 1:20:13today identical.
- 1:20:16Going on high fastball.
- 1:20:19The inside part of the plate
- 1:20:20letter high or shoulder high
- 1:20:21is the pitch.
- 1:20:22There's a curve inside for a
- 1:20:23ball ball one.
- 1:20:30Alan had two hits in the
- 1:20:31Friday night game hit was
- 1:20:32yesterday and it was today.
- 1:20:37There's a good chance to win
- 1:20:38the triple crown of the
- 1:20:39American League this year.
- 1:20:40I'm driving right there.
- 1:20:43Getting over any backhand
- 1:20:45comes up with a ball fires
- 1:20:46toward the infielders.
- 1:20:47The other half third.
- 1:20:48The 12th comes into the play
- 1:20:49he is.
- 1:21:05The relay was the best
- 1:21:06to gangliano to fit.
- 1:21:13John's going to play B.
- 1:21:14I waited to call it.
- 1:21:15I was sure what the umpire
- 1:21:16signal was down there.
- 1:21:17George Maloney.
- 1:21:27It's a double and run.
- 1:21:28Matted in for Dick Allen.
- 1:21:29George.
- 1:21:30John's going all the way from
- 1:21:31first base.
- 1:21:32That's a Carlos May.
- 1:21:33Allen is on second base with a
- 1:21:34double and run better than.
- 1:21:35Now it's two to one.
- 1:21:36The Whiteback please.
- 1:21:40That's the Carlos May as a
- 1:21:41curve inside for a ball.
- 1:21:42That Allen is some kind of
- 1:21:43hitter.
- 1:21:44He gets flipped about around
- 1:21:45like a.
- 1:21:46Toothpick and is open.
- 1:21:47Looks like he's a wrist
- 1:21:48hitter.
- 1:21:49He gets his power with the
- 1:21:50play snapping his wrist.
- 1:21:51He's got a good
- 1:21:52grip.
- 1:21:53He's got a good grip.
- 1:21:54He's got a good grip.
- 1:21:55He's got a good grip.
- 1:21:56He's got a good grip.
- 1:21:57He's got a good grip.
- 1:21:58He's got a good grip.
- 1:21:59He's got a good grip.
- 1:22:00He's got a good grip.
- 1:22:01He's got a good grip.
- 1:22:02He's got a good grip.
- 1:22:03He's got a good grip.
- 1:22:04He's got a good grip.
- 1:22:05You know, I mean,
- 1:22:06if you're a good
- 1:22:07player, you're going to see
- 1:22:09some kind of hoax out there.
- 1:22:11He uses a 40 oz batten away.
- 1:22:12He waves it around in the way
- 1:22:13he swings at the ball,
- 1:22:14seems like it.
- 1:22:15Like it.
- 1:22:16Light as a feather
- 1:22:17doing.
- 1:22:20The curve strike call to
- 1:22:21Carlos May is one on one.
- 1:22:26that alley and right center,
- 1:22:27managed to backhand the
- 1:22:28ball, cut it off and
- 1:22:29from going to the wall but then he was not in good position to throw the ball and his
- 1:22:33throw to Gagliano the relay man was a weak one. Smith has a little arm trouble right
- 1:22:38now anyway his right elbow was bothering him when he was out of the lineup. Here's the
- 1:22:43ball outside the count goes the ball two strike one. The Gagliano then had a long throw to
- 1:22:49make to the plate. It was on track it but just too late as Johnstone a fast fan raced
- 1:22:54around and beat the play. Smith had the plate locked off but Johnstone simply beat the throw.
- 1:23:01Two one pitchers. He was around on it rules Carlos rules the umpire Maloney on Carlos May and
- 1:23:09May won Maloney now to check with the base ump and here's Chuck Tanner out of the dugout. He
- 1:23:16wants clarification on it also. They check with a third base umpire Anthony and he says it's a strike.
- 1:23:24So the count is ball two strike two on Carlos May. Anthony upheld the plate ump who had already
- 1:23:31rolled the strike. Ball two strike two on May. Ball two and strike two the count May.
- 1:23:48batting left handed and funny dangerous. Here's a check swing on a curved ball he taps it back to
- 1:23:55the pitcher and throws him out. Didn't mean to hit the ball he's got all up on the swing ball
- 1:23:59it is batting with an easy roller right back to McLaughlin. Had an easy play McLaughlin just
- 1:24:06catered. Two runs in the inning three hits and one man left. One walk in the inning. With a walk hurt
- 1:24:14McLaughlin a batter a walk Johnstone scored in the double by Allen. Score at the end of five is
- 1:24:20Chicago two and the Red Sac one. For an exciting different vacation this year red hot tent trailer

- 1:25:25Beach Philadelphia 3-1 winning pitcher Don Wilson seven and eight losing pitcher Ken Reynolds
- 1:25:300 and 11. Now the sixth inning there's Ned Martin. Alright Dave Danny Cater first up Red
- 1:25:37Stock trailing now 2-1. Cater wraps the ground ball the third baseman is Fizio going to his left
- 1:25:42throws him out one away one bitch one out as Cater has not had the ball out of the infield.
- 1:25:50Reggie Smith hasn't either he is struck out and grounded out Wilbur Wood has been giving up
- 1:25:58hits with no run except for the one in the second inning. The Red Sox have had opportunities to
- 1:26:04score but Wood has had it when he's needed it and now that has cost the Red Sox the lead as
- 1:26:10they now trailed 2-1 and a walk the thing it really hurts McLaughlin. Pitch is inside for a ball
- 1:26:18of course the Homer hurt naturally from where you least expected Louis Alvarado. Wood with a 2-1
- 1:26:26lead pitching to Smithy and there's a ground ball toward the middle taking their backer second by
- 1:26:30Andrew throws the first he's out. Ball is not sharply enough hit to make it to center field and Andrews
- 1:26:37has pulled over there anyway on Smith so he throws Reggie out second the first and they're very
- 1:26:43quickly two men out in the sixth inning. Rico Petroselli is 2-2 he's single to left and scores
- 1:26:49the only red Sox run in the second inning and he's single to center in the fourth. Pitch to him
- 1:26:56low ball one. A two-out walk to J. Johnstone was followed by the double by Richie Allen which
- 1:27:08drove in the lead run for Chicago. Rico fouls it back. One ball one strike. Wood fires.
- 1:27:39That's the word. The ground ball right back to it. He throws Petroselli out. Three ground balls at
- 1:27:45an eighth of the Red Sox they go very easily before Wilbur Wood's knuckleball. So that's all one,
- 1:27:53two, three they go in the sixth at the end of five and a half. The score is Chicago two the Red Sox one.

- 1:28:30more than you have in your checking account and it's a godsend for some of life's little surprises
- 1:28:35like when the refrigerator goes on the fritz. Now isn't that super? Yeah check credit with ESP.
- 1:28:43It's a supernatural. Ask about it at Hartford National. Hartford National Bank.
- 1:29:07The White Sox lead here by a score of two to one as they come to bat in the bottom half of the
- 1:29:12sixth inning. Mike Andrews will be first up against Lynn McLaughlin then it'll be Ed Feasio
- 1:29:19and Ed Herman. McLaughlin and Wilbur Wood matching pitches here and right now Wood has the
- 1:29:25best of it. Two to one. And here's the pitch to Andrews inside ball one. Mike has popped up
- 1:29:42and won. Carlton Fisk now has thrown out six of ten base dealers on this road trip and four of the
- 1:29:49last six that have tried to steal on it so he's come back after a month or so and not getting
- 1:29:55anybody out. Pitch to Andrews line foul down in the left field. One ball one strike to Mike.
- 1:30:04One ball one strike Andrews leading off the sixth inning. The pitch to him knocked him down a fast
- 1:30:25ball. Two and one. Sun now trying to peek through and is coming out pretty well as to
- 1:30:35Miskie Marks. This is the first of a double header. The White Sox leading two to one.
- 1:30:40Andrews started to get back in. Now he wants the bat rosin or the pine car rag in the on-deck
- 1:30:52circle. Wipes it on his bat. A lot of the players keep a lot of that pine car halfway up on their
- 1:30:59bat and they grip it from time to time get some purchase for their hands on the bat handle.
- 1:31:04There's a foul back on the upper deck. The count on Andrews two and two. Two balls two strikes.
- 1:31:24Pitch. Ground ball base hit to the field. Taken by Costco on the ground and Andrews is there with a
- 1:31:32lead off single in the sixth inning. Well let's see. Four of the last five batters to face McLoughan
- 1:31:40have gotten on base. Gotting the last four hitters in the fifth inning. He now has given up six hits
- 1:31:48in the game. Wilbur Wood has given up six. Ed Beasio third baseman is up. In field comes in a
- 1:32:00double play depth. Here's the pitch to Beasio and he takes the ball. He's taking on the first pitch.
- 1:32:06Let's see if they change things around now. He's checking with third base coach Joe Lynette.
- 1:32:10Seems they put anything on here. McGrothan set throws runner going. Hit and run foul ball out of play.
- 1:32:30Fred Sherman has gone into relief for Detroit. California is still batting in the top of the fourth
- 1:32:36inning. They've been out a while. Ray DePenson has had a home run in that inning. Tigers did have a two
- 1:32:42nothing lead. Gary Peters starts to throw in the bullpen for Boston. Beasio batting against
- 1:32:54McLoughan. The pitch. Pitch up nowhere. Runner stays. Andrews holds it first base and now the count is two and one.
- 1:33:10Lyn McGrothan sets and throws. Strikes swinging two and two. Two balls, two strikes. Nobody out. Here's the
- 1:33:30pitch outside ball three. Three and two now. McGrothan is starting to struggle a little bit. He was in a fifth
- 1:33:38inning. When he gave up the two runs, he's given up a single to Andrews and he's now three and two to Speasio.
- 1:33:50Here's the set and the pitch. Here's the high foul ball. Kater chasing and near the stands. It'll be out of play.
- 1:34:02Two and two. They had Andrews running on that. Nobody out. White socks ahead by a run. McGrothan with the
- 1:34:22pitch. Here's the pitch. Runner going. Check swing and a foul. Speasio started to swing and then checked as he tried to get out of the way of it.
- 1:34:33It was an inside pitch and it hit his bat. Peters throwing hard in the red stock bullpen now. Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:34:47McGrothan gets set. Throws. Andrews breaks. Here's another foul. Three and two. So Mike Andrews is getting a workout breaking from first to second.
- 1:35:06They have him going all the time on three and two. This is a man that McGrothan would like to strike out. Then try for the double play
- 1:35:16if they could knock Andrews down trying for second. Three balls, two strikes. Here it comes. There he goes.
- 1:35:25A foul. Ball out of play again. No play for Fizz because Speasio is battling McGrothan and spoiling the good ones on the three to count.
- 1:35:44So Mac will try again. He gets to the mound. Speasio backs out a moment now he's in. Andrews has a free fourth step lead.
- 1:35:54Now the pitch and is hitting the left field for a base hit. Andrews third second base. Costco is going to throw to second. Andrews bellywaps into third.
- 1:36:04White Starks are running. So they had Andrews going again and Mike got into third base. Costco took one look and saw that he had no chance to get Andrews.
- 1:36:16So he played it safe and threw to second base to prevent Speasio possibly from taking second if they did go to third with a throw.
- 1:36:24Now the White Starks who have been running all this series have runners at first and third. Nobody out. Leeds dying at that time.
- 1:36:34I'm talking with McGrothan and Fizz. They batter will be Ed Herman, the left handed hitter. Seven hits now off McGrothan.
- 1:36:47And they've had five of them in the last two innings. So he is really firing out there to fear losing something that he had had before inning.
- 1:36:58Now he's faced with a first and third situation. Nobody out. He got out of a similar situation in the first inning.
- 1:37:07The infield is shortened up halfway. They're playing it halfway.
- 1:37:18Time's off. And the crowd is hearing the final score on the scoreboard. Cleveland defeated Oakland. Three to one.
- 1:37:42All that cheering you're hearing has been nothing to do with what's going on in the field.
- 1:37:55They both said Cleveland three, Oakland one, a final score. And Cleveland really has put it to the Oakland athletic.
- 1:38:02And as of this moment, the White Starks are in first place in the American League West.
- 1:38:07And they're pitched to Herman. Ground ball foul. First base tie. In that game, Cleveland had three runs and five hits.
- 1:38:14They made an error. Oakland one run, seven hits, no errors. Dick Tidrow the winner. And Ken Holtman the loser.
- 1:38:2112,818 at Cleveland. So the Indians did a job on Dick Williams' club. Taking two out of three.
- 1:38:39Here's the set and the pitch. Outside to Herman. Ball one. Well, California's still batting in Detroit in the fourth inning.
- 1:38:52Another pitcher, John Hiller has come in to relieve. So the Tigers have had three pitchers in that inning.
- 1:39:01Don Neuhaus are in the bullpen now. There's a check swing foul by Herman. One ball, two strikes. The White Starks are leading here two to one and threatening for more.
- 1:39:11This is the bottom of the sixth inning. They've already received news that Oakland has lost.
- 1:39:19Red Starks in trouble. They've had opportunities to score, but they've only had one run this afternoon.
- 1:39:23And now McLaughlin is trying to pitch his way out of a jam. The count on Herman is one ball, two strikes.
- 1:39:38One and two. Here's the set. The pitch. High ball two. Two and two.
- 1:39:55Crazy crowd here at Comiskey Park. Nipping first place. Here's the set. The pitch. A base pitch for the Indians. It's now three to one and here comes the runner's physio in the third.
- 1:40:09Runner's at first and third. Still nobody out. That's going to be all. That's all for Lynn McLaughlin.
- 1:40:25Who suddenly lost it all here in the fifth and sixth inning. He's been riding along with a one nothing lead which of course isn't much.
- 1:40:33Red Starks had gotten in one run and that's all even though they had chances for more. But in the fifth inning, he gave up two runs.
- 1:40:41He has given up three hits in a run here and he will leave under fire.
- 1:40:50So Don Newhouse is coming on the pitch. You are listening to Red Starks baseball from Comiskey Park in Chicago.
- 1:40:58Lynn McLaughlin will leave the ball game going five innings plus getting nobody out in the sixth. He gave up three straight singles in this inning.
- 1:41:06The White Starks in every instance taking going from first to third on those singles. Twice they've done it. Something that Red Starks have not been able to do as much as Chicago.
- 1:41:16So they've had speed and they've had batting when they needed it. And McLaughlin leaves giving up eight innings and three runs. He's responsible for two base runners. He walks three and he struck out five.
- 1:41:29So McLaughlin leaves the game for Newhouse. The Red Starks got a run on the second inning on a single by Petra Selly, a pass ball and a double by fifth.
- 1:41:38The White Starks scored in a fifth on a home run by Alvarado, then a single by Kelly, a walk to Johnstone and a double by Richie Allen.
- 1:41:46They've scored here on singles by Andrews, Fizio and Herman in succession.
- 1:41:59Newhouse is on the mound taking his warm-up. We'll pause for a station break. This is Red Starks baseball.
- 1:42:05And this is WTIC in Hartford, Connecticut. The forecast from the Travelers Weather Service.
- 1:42:09Sunny this afternoon, clearing and becoming cool tonight below in the 50s. Sunny and warm tomorrow, right now on the Plaza, 80 degrees.
- 1:42:17Back at Kineski Park with Newhouse and the new Red Starks pitcher. Newhouse is banking now at 22nd appearance. He's won three and saved three and lost two with an ERA of 2.86.
- 1:42:29In 28 and a third innings, he's allowed 23 hits and nine earned runs. Same number of walks and strikeouts, 22.
- 1:42:36Pass ball and slider is in short put. He comes in here in a tough spot.
- 1:42:41All right, it's Louis Alvarado up. He started the Chicago scoring this afternoon with a home run into the lower deck and left in the fifth inning.
- 1:42:51He is two for two, a single and a homer. Red Starks have the infield in about three steps off the infield grass or turf.
- 1:43:02Pitch is low through Alvarado ball one. Nobody outrunners at first and third. White Starks making noises as if they'd go into a beginning.
- 1:43:12They scored one run and have two on.
- 1:43:22Here's a set by Newhouse where he throws way outside ball two. Two and nothing.
- 1:43:37Two balls, no strikes. To Alvarado. Here's the set, the pitch. Ball three. Three and 0. Alvarado, a number eight hitter, batting 237 before this game.
- 1:43:58Up there with a free old count, Wilbur Wood on deck. Newhouse are cracks and fires, strike call on the outside corner.
- 1:44:12Talking with Doug Camille, the bullpen coach, in a dugout interview, and talking about this streak that the Red Starks went through for a while of not being able to get that first batter out coming in from the bullpen.
- 1:44:23And they don't do it this time either. Alvarado walks. So that loads the bases with nobody out and Wilbur Wood is up.
- 1:44:33Alvarado walks. He's still perfect on the afternoon. Jerry Peters at work in the bullpen for Boston. Wilbur Wood coming to the plate.
- 1:44:43What he says are really alive here. Half of them are up, giving Wooder standing ovation.
- 1:45:03Woodie at the plate has been called out twice on strikes. Wood stands in there.
- 1:45:17Apparicio and Gagliano are right at the edge of the turf. Pettiselli is even with the bag at third. Gator in a step at first. There's a called strike to Wood.
- 1:45:30Bases full, nobody out. One run already in and the White Starks leading three to one. Newhouser gets the sign.
- 1:45:47Big right hander working from the stretch throws strike two called outside corner. Jerry Peters has stopped his warm up to watch from the bullpen.
- 1:46:00Nothing in two to Wilbur Wood. It is ball low, one ball, two strikes. Alvarado at first, Herman at second. Tepisio at third.
- 1:46:24There's a pitch. One run scores, this throws the second two run score. Five to one.
- 1:46:48That's going to be all for Newhouser. He can't get anybody out. Walking that first man that he faced and then giving up a single to Wilbur Wood, the pitcher, to drive in two runs.
- 1:47:01Runners at first and second. Nobody out yet.
- 1:47:07They've scored three runs this inning. All those runs are charged to McLaughlin. So now it is a five to one ball game. Chicago leading with Wilbur Wood. That's a big lead for Wood to have.
- 1:47:25So he just stuck the bat out there and plunked the base in into right field. Just went right nicely with a pitch.
- 1:47:31And he made it look easy. Now a new pitcher is Gary Peters. Newhouser pitching to Jeff Twobatter giving up a walk in a hit.
- 1:47:41Peters, the only game Friday night of the release pitcher for Sonny Sieber. It will be the 27th appearance. Two wins, two losses and a save for Gary.
- 1:47:51And next White Sox pitcher at his greatest years in this ballpark. The member of the White Sox. Turn-run average 4.4 all. He's pitched 71 and 2 thirds for the Red Sox this year.
- 1:48:01Allowing 35 earned runs and 78 hits. He's walked 33 and struck out 55. Peters pitched a Friday night.
- 1:48:12And it was Nick for a home run by the first man who came in. And he's a left hander now on the mound facing a left hander Kelly. Still getting in his warm up throw.
- 1:48:25Well, twice in a series that same problem has come about with the release score unable to get the first man out.
- 1:48:32Peters pitched well after he gave up the home run but that was all done.
- 1:48:36That makes it an entirely different ball game at a time the score was 5-1 on Friday night which it is now.
- 1:48:43And Gary came on with two men on and Jay Johnstone up and he gave up a home run to him which put the game out of strike completely.
- 1:48:50Newhouser comes in, walks the first man he faces, the number 8 hitter and then he gives a single to the pitcher Wilbur Woods.
- 1:48:58So the bullpen continues to have its problem. Matt Kelly is up. He has walked, struck out and singled.
- 1:49:07Now the White Sox have a 5-1 lead in this first game.
- 1:49:14Gary Peters gets set, throws and it's low as Kelly was bluffing a bunch.
- 1:49:23Well the California Angels got 9 runs in the fourth inning and they leave the Detroit Tigers now 9-2.
- 1:49:30So at least that part is good news for the Red Sox. Might be better news for the Orioles who play Minnesota later this evening at Baltimore.
- 1:49:39Yankees play the night at Texas. Everybody wins or everybody loses in the East Division it seems.
- 1:49:46Stock clubs pitches inside for a ball is 2-0 to Kelly.
- 1:49:56Ken Tatum and Bill Lee are warming now in the Red Sox bullpen.
- 1:50:04Peters works from the stretch, throws, ball outside for you to know.
- 1:50:15Three balls, no strikes to Pat Kelly. Jay Johnstone another left-hander hitter is on deck.
- 1:50:28The set, fetch, strike calls 3-1. Alvarado is at second base, Wilbur Wood at first.
- 1:50:47Peters ready, throws, funded out and missed. The third and second they've got him picked off.
- 1:50:53Alvarado, Aperitio throws to Pettiselli and Alvarado is out. Carlson fifth saw Alvarado court way off the bag.
- 1:51:00He fired down to Louis Aperitio and Alvarado broke for third. He was an easy out as Pettiselli received a throw from Louis and put the tag on Alvarado.
- 1:51:11So the play goes 2-6 to 5. And he was picked off. Nice play by Carlson fifth, alert behind the plate.
- 1:51:22Alvarado is first now with one out. They academically called it caught stealing. He really wasn't.
- 1:51:27He just happened to be caught off the bag. There's a call, strike to Kelly at the knees.
- 1:51:36Pat Kelly looks at strike three after he's gone three and 0. So he is out of there and now there are two down with a runner at first.
- 1:51:44Good pitch by Peters on the outside corner. So they've erased it. A runner and a batter now in the space of two pitches.
- 1:51:52Now how they could call that caught stealing. Alvarado was not digging for third but he was way off the bag.
- 1:51:59He was just dozing off second base. Caught sleeping, caught sleeping is right. He was picked off.
- 1:52:07John's filled up and he hits a line drive base at the right center field. Covered by Tommy Harper. Wood stopped at second.
- 1:52:16White Rocks continue to hit. Line drive to right center and Richie Allen is coming up.
- 1:52:26The White Rocks lead five to one now. They have runners at first and second. Two gone and Allen up.
- 1:52:33Allen has struck out twice and doubled the right center driving in a run.
- 1:52:47Here's the pitch. Outside ball one. Allen has a slight hitch in his swing. Every big hitter does.
- 1:52:54So what's said Williams will tell you. Has some kind of hitch. Now all these three swingers anyway which is what Allen is.
- 1:53:06But he has such great power. Here's the pitch to him. Way outside ball two. Two and nothing.
- 1:53:15Ball just jumps off his bat.
- 1:53:22Wood at second. John's done it first.
- 1:53:29Pitch. There is a ground foul past third.
- 1:53:54Long look by Peters. Account two and one to Allen. Left hander checks and throws. Low in the dirt. Ball three. Three and one.
- 1:54:07Milwaukee one Kansas City nothing after six. California nine Detroit two after four. Cleveland beat Oakland three to one.
- 1:54:17Peters throws to Allen. Ball outside. He walks him and the bases are loaded. Second time in this inning they've been loaded up.
- 1:54:29Allen to first. John's down to second. Wood goes to third. And the batter will be Carlos May the ninth man to come up in this sixth inning.
- 1:54:41May is over three. In the National League Montreal has scored a run in the eighth inning. They lead Atlanta one nothing after eight.
- 1:54:54The pitch to May. Ball high. Cincinnati won the Mets nothing after six that New York. Houston beat Philadelphia three to one.
- 1:55:06Allen has lost his 11th game. He has yet to win this year. John Wilson the winner. Peters delivers. Strike swinging on a slider.
- 1:55:19May has had a field of choice. Grounded a short and bounced to the mound. Three on two outs. Three runs in. White stock leading five one in the sixth inning.
- 1:55:35The pitch to wind up the pitch. Strike two. Swinging. One and two.
- 1:55:51Peters gets the sign. He throws and strikes three. Bowel chip held by Carlton fifth. Carlos may strikes out with the bases loaded.
- 1:56:05So that's a further tragedy for the Red Sox. Peters after giving up a one out single or a two out single and one gets May on a strikeout.
- 1:56:15In the inning the White Sox bat around nine men came up. They scored three runs. Five hits. They leave three men on base.
- 1:56:24And after six innings of play the White Sox leads five to one.
- 1:56:30Why don't you cast it over there right by that rock.
- 1:56:35Sounds of a more than one beer day. A hot summer day that makes you build a more than one beer first. You can't wait for the big ones to bite.
- 1:56:45But the one thing you're sure to catch is a whopping first. A fish that's big enough for a couple of beers at least. So today only shape your days.
- 1:56:55Oh. She's a pleasure stage. First beer. First beer. First.
- 1:57:08described has crossed the last till last. They will start of practicing on more than one Cheersburg by B4лив in starting passes.
- 1:57:26In the seventh inning, the White Sox have made some changes.
- 1:57:35Tony Muser is playing first base now, giving Richie Allen the rest of this game off.
- 1:57:41Allen will be there in the second game.
- 1:57:43So it's Muser playing first base and batting in Allen's number three spot.
- 1:57:49And Rich Morales is playing second base, replacing Mike Andrews.
- 1:57:55Morales playing second and batting in Andrews's spot.
- 1:57:59Muser playing first and batting in Allen's spot.
- 1:58:05Tyssenatti has come up with six runs in the seventh.
- 1:58:07They lead the New York Mets seven-nothing after six and a half at New York.
- 1:58:13Mets are having their troubles.
- 1:58:15In the top of the seventh here, with the Red Sox trailing five to one,
- 1:58:19Carlson fifth will be first up against Wilbur Wood,
- 1:58:22who spent some time on the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:58:27He got a big hit.
- 1:58:27He stuck in at two runs single.
- 1:58:35But he has a four run lead to mess around with now.
- 1:58:42Fisk is one for two, a run producing double in the second inning.
- 1:58:46It's a fly ball to right field, very high.
- 1:58:48Pat Kelly, back tracks, he's there.
- 1:58:51He's got it, one pitch, one out.
- 1:58:54As Wood seems to be getting stronger now,
- 1:58:56he was a little shaky in the second and third innings and a four.
- 1:59:01Retired the side in order in the sixth inning, gave up one hit back in the fifth.
- 1:59:07And Andy Kosko is up now.
- 1:59:09He has struck out and singled.
- 1:59:21Wood delivers and it's swung on.
- 1:59:26Strike one.
- 1:59:26There it is.
- 1:59:28Ground foul to the left.
- 1:59:32Eddie Popowski, the acting manager again today,
- 1:59:35coaching on the third baseline.
- 1:59:37Eddie Kosko has been very ill with the flu,
- 1:59:42and will probably meet the team at the airport going to Canada City.
- 1:59:45Wood delivers, outside to Kosko, one and two.
- 1:59:56Eddie Fisher, another knuckleballer from the right hand side,
- 1:59:59will throw him a three.
- 2:00:01Eddie Kosko is a very ill with the flu,
- 2:00:05and will probably meet the team at the airport going to Canada City.
- 2:00:09Wood delivers, outside to Kosko, one and two.
- 2:00:14The left hand side will throw in the second game for Chicago.
- 2:00:18Kosko bends away from an inside pitch.
- 2:00:21Ball two, two and two.
- 2:00:23Left hander John Critis will go for the Red Sox in the night catch.
- 2:00:29Two-two pitch.
- 2:00:31High pop-up in the infield.
- 2:00:33Alvarado at short stops, giving way to the second baseman Morales,
- 2:00:37who's got it in front of Alvarado on the third base side of second.
- 2:00:41He pops up, two down.
- 2:00:45Here's Phil Gagliano, 0-for-2, he's grounded out and applied to center.
- 2:00:54What has been a tight ball game,
- 2:00:56and the pitching duel between Wood and McLaughlin,
- 2:00:58is now five to one for Wood.
- 2:01:01He's playing in a miss by Gag, strike one.
- 2:01:120-one delivery, outside ball one, one-one.
- 2:01:25Kosko, there's a drive to center field for a basis for Gagliano.
- 2:01:30He's going first, he's one for three, and that's the seventh Red Sox hit.
- 2:01:35They have seven hits and only one run.
- 2:01:38Two outs single by Gagliano.
- 2:01:42And we're going to have a pinch hitter, John Kennedy,
- 2:01:45going to bat for Gary Peter.
- 2:01:52Kennedy, played it to play the second game at second base.
- 2:01:58Doug Griffin, incidentally, is here.
- 2:02:00He joined the club late yesterday,
- 2:02:02flying out on a delayed flight from Boston.
- 2:02:05And he will run and take whirlpool on the wrist.
- 2:02:13The cast is off, he has it in a bandage now.
- 2:02:17The main thing that he'll have to do is to try to strengthen the wrist,
- 2:02:22and it'll be quite a while before he'll be able to bat.
- 2:02:26But he said it's been coming along better than expected.
- 2:02:30So Doug will be with the club the rest of this trip,
- 2:02:33and will do his exercises and his therapy work on the wrist.
- 2:02:37The club has certainly missed Doug Griffin.
- 2:02:42John Kennedy up, batting for Gary Peter.
- 2:02:46And he's going with method of strike one.
- 2:02:57Set by Wilbur Wood, a pitch, foul back, strike two.
- 2:03:12Now the delivery.
- 2:03:17A fly ball to left center field.
- 2:03:19Carlos Mayover shows John Stone,
- 2:03:21and Jay John Stone is going to one-handed for the out.
- 2:03:24That ends the inning, no runs, one hit and one left.
- 2:03:28And after six and one-half innings,
- 2:03:30it is the White Stock five, the Red Stock one.
- 2:03:34There has to make a minute to try to convince you to do something for your own good.

- 2:12:03Here's the pitch.
- 2:12:04The serve over, called strikes, 2-1.

- 2:12:21The Red Sox have had their share of bad luck with the injuries,
- 2:12:23more so than any other club in the Eastern Division, really.

- 2:26:28The pitch way outside gets away.
- 2:26:30Here's the runner coming in.
- 2:26:32He is safe.
- 2:26:33No play at the play.
- 2:26:34Five to four now.
- 2:26:35Favors Chicago.
- 2:26:37Pitch was outside.
- 2:26:38They're calling in a wild pitch.
- 2:26:40Came all the way back to the screen.
- 2:26:42A lot of territory back there.
- 2:26:44Catcher Herman Chase.
- 2:26:46Had no chance for a play at the play.
- 2:26:49Kater scored easily and the other men moved up
- 2:26:51especially to third base and fifth to second base.
- 2:27:01Count is ball two.
- 2:27:02Two and nothing on Gagliano.
- 2:27:03First base open now.
- 2:27:04Tying run of third.
- 2:27:05Five to four.
- 2:27:06The score.
- 2:27:07Chicago leads.
- 2:27:08Pitch.
- 2:27:09Playing foul ball back at the play.
- 2:27:10Count is ball two.
- 2:27:11Strike one.
- 2:27:15The ball is going to hit the ground.
- 2:27:17Two to three.
- 2:27:18There's a three.
- 2:27:19The two to three.
- 2:27:20Two to three.
- 2:27:21There's a three.
- 2:27:22The other three.
- 2:27:23To just join us.
- 2:27:24Cleveland lead Oakland today.
- 2:27:25Three to one.
- 2:27:26Angels are way out ahead of Detroit.
- 2:27:27Nine to two.
- 2:27:28The end of sixth.
- 2:27:29Bollinmore go to play tonight.
- 2:27:30Here's a quick ball on the inside corner.
- 2:27:31Gagliano didn't like that ball.
- 2:27:36Count is ball two.
- 2:27:37Strike two.
- 2:27:38Just hit the corner at the knee.
- 2:27:44Two spike two on gag piano.
- 2:27:48Outfield, straight away, barely deep. Here's the pitch.
- 2:27:51Low for a wall. Wall three spike two.
- 2:27:55Otherwise, win with low to up again and bring up...
- 2:28:01Bring up the pitcher, do the hit or a fin shitter.
- 2:28:06Fatem is in the on-deck circle.
- 2:28:09Two out, here's the pitch.
- 2:28:11Mike Green, one and missed, so down on straight.
- 2:28:15Gagliano, one hearted a pass ball.
- 2:28:17First for fans of Casco and Gagliano.
- 2:28:21Three runs in the inning for the Reds,
- 2:28:23and one, two, three hits.
- 2:28:25There were no errors, two men are left.
- 2:28:27One wild pitch, and two walks.
- 2:28:32At the end of the top of the eighth inning,
- 2:28:34there's Chicago five and Boston four.
- 2:28:41Terry Forster has been a villain in this series,
- 2:28:44as far as the Reds act is concerned.
- 2:28:46He came on in the Friday night game,
- 2:28:49pitched one and one-third innings of shutout relief,
- 2:28:53getting three strikeouts out of four possible outs.
- 2:29:01And he struck out the only two men he faced
- 2:29:03when he relieved Wilbur Wood on the top of the eighth.
- 2:29:06Getting a hand as he comes out to bat now,
- 2:29:08Terry Forster.
- 2:29:09Forster's been in somewhat of a slump since the all-star break.
- 2:29:14Whiteback versus Pitches,
- 2:29:16but the other teams were reading his pitches.
- 2:29:20Boy, he's got great stuff, great pass ball,
- 2:29:22and a good fast, hard curve ball.
- 2:29:26He's up there now batting left-handed.
- 2:29:28Facing Ken Tatum, last half of the eighth inning.
- 2:29:30Here's the pitch.
- 2:29:31Playing in a base hit to left field, for Forster.
- 2:29:33It's the first pitch,
- 2:29:35clearly, between Betts-Rosselli and Appareggio,
- 2:29:37in the left field.
- 2:29:38Appareggio's field hit.
- 2:29:42That brings up Pat Kelly.
- 2:29:47That's the fourth Whiteback hit today.
- 2:29:51Reds act of playing in his bat.
- 2:29:53Five to four, your car going on top.
- 2:29:56Here's Pat Kelly.
- 2:29:58Up three times and he has one hit.
- 2:30:01Local John O'Walk.
- 2:30:07Betts-Rosselli hedging in now.
- 2:30:11Here's the pitch.
- 2:30:12Not a Kelly, he butted towards Betts-Rosselli at 30.
- 2:30:15Get a lot of goal and it goes foul.
- 2:30:17Liko came in on the left field.
- 2:30:19He's got a good ball.
- 2:30:20Got to let it go and it goes foul.
- 2:30:23Liko came in on it and I thought he was going to pick it up,
- 2:30:25but he decided to let it go and it goes foul.
- 2:30:29Now it's like one on Pat Kelly,
- 2:30:31he was streaking down the first-play flight
- 2:30:33and now he's walking slowly back to the plate.
- 2:30:39Forster has to go back to first-place.
- 2:30:46Reds act pitchers in the Kansas City series.
- 2:30:49Wednesday night, Wednesday night,
- 2:30:51will be Marty Patten and Sonny Siebert.
- 2:30:57Although Wednesday it could possibly be Seabed,
- 2:31:00I'm going to go into the roadside
- 2:31:02because Seabed or Seabed on Wednesday.
- 2:31:04Reds act pitchers two open days,
- 2:31:06coming late Monday and Thursday.
- 2:31:08Here's a photo first-place runner as well.
- 2:31:10Reds will be home Friday night,
- 2:31:12against the Texas Rangers.
- 2:31:14Mike Lund is the count on Pat Kelly.
- 2:31:16He's keeping an eye on the runner at first-place.
- 2:31:18Here's a picture of Kelly.
- 2:31:20He butts it again, this time pops it up,
- 2:31:22foul, out of play.
- 2:31:24Count of strike two on Kelly.
- 2:31:28Kansas City pitchers are scheduled to be Mike Hedlund.
- 2:31:30One is last four starts.
- 2:31:32Tuesday night and on Wednesday night,
- 2:31:34Roger Nelson won 6 and lost 4 this year
- 2:31:36and is second in the American League
- 2:31:38at the Kansas City League.
- 2:31:40He's going to be the first to play
- 2:31:42his second in the national team
- 2:31:44in the game this spring.
- 2:31:46He's going to be the first to play his second in the
- 2:31:48game this spring.
- 2:31:50Here's a picture of Mike Hedlund.
- 2:31:52He's going to be the third in the game this spring.
- 2:31:54Here's a picture of Mike Hedlund.
- 2:31:56He's going to be the fourth this year
- 2:31:58and is second in the American League at ERA.
- 2:32:00There's a picture of Mike Hedlund.
- 2:32:02There's a picture of Mike Hedlund.
- 2:32:04Nobody outlasts the eighth inning,
- 2:32:06now on first place.
- 2:32:08Reds in the pitch, outside of all,
- 2:32:10two.
- 2:32:15Really a lot weaker to so much of the Tigers with a man on it now.
- 2:32:18Angels nine Tigers four in the sixth inning.
- 2:32:22Bish playing his line drive off the glove of Apple,
- 2:32:25he's killing a lot better field.
- 2:32:27Gonna be a hit up for the ball with Hypers.
- 2:32:30Hunters hold it first and second.
- 2:32:32Really thought he was gonna make that catch and curie.
- 2:32:35He's stuck up his glove going to his left.
- 2:32:39That is love but he's deflected off the glove,
- 2:32:42didn't hit in the pocket and goes into center field for a hit.
- 2:32:47Harded ball, brings up John Stone.
- 2:32:50Two men on with nobody out.
- 2:32:58Three hits off Tatum, two in a row in this inning.
- 2:33:0113 now by the White Tracks in the game.
- 2:33:04Two on, nobody out.
- 2:33:05White Tracks thrusting again here in the eighth inning
- 2:33:08and now the Red Tracks are looking for a bunch.
- 2:33:11Bish, he picked it outside for the second, he is safe.
- 2:33:15Bish snaps a throw down for a ratio of second.
- 2:33:18Forster went sliding back in, he had to go back in, hit first.
- 2:33:25He made it.
- 2:33:28Ball, Bish was a ball, got his ball on, one and oh on, John Stone.
- 2:33:33He has two hits in a row.
- 2:33:36A pair of singles and three official times at that.
- 2:33:39Left hand hitter, Bish, he runs it.
- 2:33:42Here's the third base, what a third he is,
- 2:33:45called out a third base.
- 2:33:46Just didn't hit him in the butt.
- 2:33:48Wow, was that close at third, fifth to Petra Sellers.
- 2:33:54One of those very short planks right there on the dirt at the plate
- 2:34:00in front of the plate.
- 2:34:02Bish picked it up, threw the third base and just didn't hit Forster for the out.
- 2:34:07Without, Eddie Papofsky is going to the mound.
- 2:34:10Had Von Luthezard had tremendous reverse English on it, Dave,
- 2:34:14it started out as if it might even go foul, but it took a hop in.
- 2:34:18And actually Fisch did a good job to stay right with it
- 2:34:21and make that play ahead of him and knock down that lead man.
- 2:34:27Papofsky is making a motion to the bullpen
- 2:34:29and that'll be all for Ken Tatum.
- 2:34:33We'll get Bill Lee now with the runners on first and second
- 2:34:38and one out.
- 2:34:41Lee, a left hander coming in to face a left hand hitter and user.
- 2:34:45But Ken Tatum gets better for pitching one and one third innings.
- 2:34:50Tatum allows three hits.
- 2:34:53No walks, one strikeout.
- 2:34:56Could be charged with two runs, so far hasn't been charged with any runs.
- 2:35:01But he leaves two men on base.
- 2:35:03So the new pitcher is left hander Bill Lee.
- 2:35:06Well, let's see. Lee coming on now for his 37th appearance of the year,
- 2:35:12the same as the number on his back.
- 2:35:15His record is 6 wins, 3 losses and 4 saves.
- 2:35:19His earned run average, 4.07.
- 2:35:22He's worked 55 in a third inning, giving up 48 hits in that time,
- 2:35:26struck out 32 and walked 23.
- 2:35:29In the last month, Lee has not been affected.
- 2:35:32Trying to get back into a groove, he did save a ball game down in Texas.
- 2:35:38And now hopes to try to get back in the groove that he had earlier in the year
- 2:35:42at all last year because it's certainly needed.
- 2:35:46Left handed help from the bullpen and Lee in short release is certainly needed.
- 2:35:50So Lee is taking his warm up, he'll face two left handed batters here,
- 2:35:54Muser and Carlos May.
- 2:35:56But runners are at first and second with one out.
- 2:35:59The White Sox leading by a run, 5-4.
- 2:36:02The Red Sox rallied for three runs on some, a fun single, a little infield hit,
- 2:36:06bunch of walks, a wild pitch, single to center.
- 2:36:10A looping single to center, they didn't get a solid hit in that inning.
- 2:36:13But they came within one run and they had runners at second and third.
- 2:36:18Andy Costco struck out, Phil Gagliano struck out after a wild pitch he had in there
- 2:36:23and that was the job that forced it in coming in from the bullpen.
- 2:36:28The California Angels now only have one run lead over Detroit.
- 2:36:36The Tigers got eight runs.
- 2:36:38So the Tigers now lead by 10-9.
- 2:36:41Yeah, we'll get it. We'll get it now. We'll get it everybody.
- 2:36:4410-9 is the score.
- 2:36:46Detroit got eight runs in the sixth inning to come from a 9-2 deficit
- 2:36:51to lead now 10-9 over the Angels. Chuck Selbot is down the pitch for Detroit.
- 2:36:56So the Tigers, who are leading the American League East in this most unusual season,
- 2:37:01have rallied and picked up eight runs to go ahead of the California Angels
- 2:37:06who seem to be having a laugh. Dave?
- 2:37:09Tony Muser up there now, he's batting 261. He's been at bat only 23 times.
- 2:37:15For the White Sox, and has 6th. Driven in two runs, no homers.
- 2:37:20Here's a swing and a ground ball through the box.
- 2:37:22Gagliano has it the second out. The first tee is safe, no double play.
- 2:37:27Well-bounders through the box. Gagliano came in on the grass behind the mound,
- 2:37:31picked it up, flipped it back to Appareccio at a tough angle for that little flip.
- 2:37:36But got it there in good shape.
- 2:37:39Appareccio's throw to first was simply too late.
- 2:37:41Muser, a fast man, beating that throw. So now we have runners on first and third and two outs.
- 2:37:46Kelly, the runner at third base.
- 2:37:53Muser at first base, both fast men. And the runner is Carlos May.
- 2:37:59Tough man at the plate has been held hitler today in four times effect.
- 2:38:04Hasn't hit the ball out of the infield.
- 2:38:08Here's the pitch to May. A swing and a foul ball.
- 2:38:11That was a slider by the left-hander to the left-hand hitter.
- 2:38:15A counter strike one on May.
- 2:38:20May has hit three ground balls and has struck out.
- 2:38:23Actually, he's hit two ground balls.
- 2:38:26The other time he funned it into a force bar.
- 2:38:31One of those ground balls came on a check point.
- 2:38:35Now the catcher, Fisk, goes out to talk to Lee.
- 2:38:39White Sox, lead five to four and Lee's hitting.
- 2:38:43He started the inning with two singles, but I haven't scored.
- 2:38:47Now Eddie Popovsky comes out of the dugout.
- 2:38:49Fisk and Lee were holding a foul ball and the acting manager today,
- 2:38:55the birthday boy Eddie Popovsky comes out and says something very briefly and quickly
- 2:39:02to the batter he makes it around and then goes right back to the dugout.
- 2:39:10Counter strike one on Carlos May.
- 2:39:19First and third two outs of situation here in the last of the eighth inning.
- 2:39:26And a pick to first base by Lee. He is safe, but fairly.
- 2:39:31Tony Muster had to dive back in.
- 2:39:38Now for the ninth inning, the red track, number nine.
- 2:39:43Now on the order of the pitcher and a hyperman Amperichio did a bat.
- 2:39:48Not only a pinch hitter for the pitcher, now the delivery to May.
- 2:39:51White or off Lee's, he's up to Amperichio.
- 2:39:53He steps on second to retire this time.
- 2:39:56So the red track got out of a jam and had an in first two men up single, but no one scored.
- 2:40:02Well, is it hard by May, deflected by the glove of Lee to the shortstop Amperichio,
- 2:40:08made the play second base, the horse play going over to step on the bag.
- 2:40:12No runs and two hits and two men are left.
- 2:40:15At the end of eighth, the score is Chicago five and the red track's four.
- 2:40:25The ninth inning, we're getting a pinch hitter now for the pitcher.
- 2:40:28It's going to be Juan Vanneke's ninth inning last chance for the red track.
- 2:40:31And here's that.
- 2:40:33All right, Dave, here's Vanneke's up there batting against left hander Terry Forster,
- 2:40:37who came on and struck out two men in relief.
- 2:40:40There's a call strike on the outside corner.
- 2:40:44Vanneke is hitting 242 as one home run, eight runs batted in.
- 2:40:49Right handed batter.
- 2:40:51Tommy Harper on deck. Forster throws.
- 2:40:54Six to ball curveball on the outside corner.
- 2:40:57Both those pitches were spotted to the same place,
- 2:41:00low and away on the outer corner.
- 2:41:050-2 to Vanneke.
- 2:41:09Here it is.
- 2:41:11There's a ground ball into center field for a base hit past the lunge of Morales,
- 2:41:16and Vanneke is on with a pinch single.
- 2:41:18That's also a hop past Morales' love.
- 2:41:20Vanneke is representing the tying run as it first will have a station break along the line right now.
- 2:41:25This is Red Sox Baseball.
- 2:41:27WTIC in Hartford, the forecast calls for clear and becoming cool tonight with the lows in the 50s,
- 2:41:32sunny and warm tomorrow. Right now on Constitution Plaza, it's 80 degrees.
- 2:41:37We're back at Kameski Park, Chicago.
- 2:41:39The Red Sox trailing by a run in the night, have a base runner.
- 2:41:42The pitch to Tommy Harper, he bluffs the button, takes a strike.
- 2:41:45That brings Fizio in from third and Mewser from first.
- 2:41:49They have the bumps, rotation going in the infield for Chicago,
- 2:41:53Alvarado going towards second and Morales towards first.
- 2:41:57Red Sox has a runner, Vanneke, who is fast at first base.
- 2:42:02Now time is called, and Eddie Papowski wants to talk to Tommy Harper.
- 2:42:06He bluffs the bus that time, Harper did, and took a strike.
- 2:42:11The Cincinnati Reds defeated the New York Mets 8-1, Don Gullit, Don Gullit getting the win,
- 2:42:16and Jim McAndrew taking the loss. 43,578 at Shays Stadium.
- 2:42:23Here's the set, the pitch. Harper hits the high fly ball down the left field line.
- 2:42:28Coming hard for it is May, and foul ground has it for the out.
- 2:42:32Vanneke returns the first.
- 2:42:37One away.
- 2:42:41Well, Harper has a good cut that time, but foul down in the left field.
- 2:42:46After a long run, May caught up with it.
- 2:42:49Louis Apparecio is up to two for four in this game.
- 2:42:53He's doubled to left and has an infield hit against Wilbur Wood.
- 2:42:58And this is his first look at Terry Forster this afternoon.
- 2:43:02Luke Kraus warming in the bullpen for Boston, just in case.
- 2:43:05Pitch is inside to Louis Apparecio, ball one.
- 2:43:09Sy Acosta, a right-hander.
- 2:43:12Ralph or Dave Lemons, a left-hander throwing the bullpen for Chicago.
- 2:43:23The set by Forster. Pitch to Apparecio.
- 2:43:26Foul ball, a line, the upper deck along the first space line.
- 2:43:31Well, the Detroit Tigers are making one of the comebacks of the year.
- 2:43:34They are leading Cleveland now 11-9 as Bill Freehand is home-ered in the seventh with none other than
- 2:43:38the seventh with none other.
- 2:43:40At one time, the Indians led 9-2.
- 2:43:461-1 pitch to Louis.
- 2:43:48Ball inside.
- 2:43:50Angels are bigger parts of the Angels playing Detroit.
- 2:43:55California had a 9-2 lead.
- 2:43:57Cleveland has beaten Oakland today, 3-1.
- 2:44:02Forster throws.
- 2:44:04Low ball free.
- 2:44:06Three balls, one strike to Apparecio.
- 2:44:10Well, Red Sox trying for something here on the night.
- 2:44:13They trail by a run, 5-4.
- 2:44:16They've come back from a 5-1 deficit.
- 2:44:19Forster throws, and it's inside ball four. Apparecio is on.
- 2:44:25That pushes Juan Benekis into scoring position in second base.
- 2:44:31Danny Cater coming up.
- 2:44:35Runners at first and second, and one down.
- 2:44:38Cater's had one hit in this game, a bunch single.
- 2:44:41It came in the eighth inning.
- 2:44:43He spliced a bunch nicely.
- 2:44:45Schopter, he cut the ball so that it had reverse English on it, and run it safely.
- 2:44:50The other three times, he has grounded out twice and popped a short.
- 2:44:55North Cater leads the club at hitting into double plays.
- 2:44:58That's what they're playing for.
- 2:45:00They're playing for the Lions, and misses strike one.
- 2:45:06Trying run at second base, the lead run at first.
- 2:45:09One out of the ninth.
- 2:45:115-4, Chicago.
- 2:45:16Cater moves in.
- 2:45:19Terry Forster looks for the time.
- 2:45:22He pitches. Cater takes strike two, right in there on the inside corner.
- 2:45:28And Danny's behind on the count 0-2.
- 2:45:32Two very quick strikes.
- 2:45:37Set by Forster, pitching.
- 2:45:40Strike three, swinging. Cater's out on three pitches.
- 2:45:44Boy did Forster handle him.
- 2:45:47He took the bat right out of Cater's hand that time.
- 2:45:51That last strike was a weak swing by Danny, who I don't believe saw that ball.
- 2:45:55And now it's ball up to Reggie Smith.
- 2:45:58Smith has had a tough afternoon.
- 2:46:01He hasn't had the ball out of the infield either.
- 2:46:03Either he nor Cater, the three-four hitters have.
- 2:46:06Reggie has struck out, grounded out twice and popped up.
- 2:46:10Vanika's at second base, the pitch.
- 2:46:13Ball one high.
- 2:46:15Two out, two on in the ninth inning.
- 2:46:17Red Sox down by a run.
- 2:46:21Reggie Smith standing in. Vanika's at second and Aperishio at first.
- 2:46:26Forster working quickly. Kicks close. Strike call.
- 2:46:31Breaking ball on the outside corner. One ball, one strike.
- 2:46:39The outfield is stepped to left on Reggie. Here's the set.
- 2:46:42The pitch. Strike two, call on the inside corner.
- 2:46:46Good fastball. Smith jacked nice away from that.
- 2:46:51But the plate on fire says strike two.
- 2:46:55Got that in strike corner. Tough pitch.
- 2:46:58One and two now. Forster ready.
- 2:47:01Set throws. A high foul ball, first base side out of play.
- 2:47:07Jack, one ball, two strikes.
