Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his Word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we're in Psalm 111, and
- 0:20this is a great portion of Scripture, and a couple of these
- 0:24verses are ones that you might have heard before.
- 0:26There's one Bible podcast that I listen to regularly actually,
- 0:31that all encourage you guys to listen to as well.
- 0:34It's called the Bible Talk Podcast, Bible Talk Podcast, and
- 0:38it has professors from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in
- 0:42Louisville, KY, and they go through, it's Doctor Jim
- 0:45Hamilton, Sam Ahmadi, and I can't remember who the third
- 0:49individual is. I believe the third one is the
- 0:51one that's kind of like the moderator and then Doctor Jim
- 0:54Hamilton and Sam Ahmadi tend to actually be the ones talking
- 0:58through Scripture. They've gone all the way from
- 1:02Genesis through Second Kings, and then now they are in the
- 1:07prophets and they're walking through Isaiah.
- 1:10And so if you want to know the Bible, you want to know the
- 1:13Bible deeply and well, I really, really, really encourage you to
- 1:18listen to the Bible Talk podcast.
- 1:20But this is Tabernacle Talk. And so I'm going to leave off
- 1:24recommending other podcasts for just a moment, But they read
- 1:29verse #2 of this Psalm every single time at the end of their
- 1:34episodes, they say great of the works of the Lord studied by all
- 1:37those who delight in them. And so I've I've heard that
- 1:41verse a lot from this particular Psalm.
- 1:44A random thing before we start the Psalm is that this Psalm is
- 1:48made in an acrostic. So the first letter of each half
- 1:52verse in Psalm 111 follows the order of the Hebrew alphabet
- 1:57with verses 9 and 10 being 3 lines each.
- 2:02So all the way through it goes through the Hebrew alphabet
- 2:05which is 22 letters and every 1st letter of each half verse
- 2:11follows through that. So you won't see that in
- 2:13English, but it's kind of cool that here God, an inspired
- 2:17scripture, has beautiful and intentional poetry that he has
- 2:22created. All right, let's jump into Psalm
- 2:25111 and see what it has for us today.
- 2:27Hallelujah. That's praise the Lord.
- 2:30I will praise Yahweh with all my heart in the assembly of the
- 2:34upright and in the congregation. Yahweh's works are great,
- 2:39studied by all who delight in them.
- 2:42All that He does is splendid and majestic.
- 2:45His righteousness endures forever.
- 2:47He has caused His wondrous works to be remembered.
- 2:51Yahweh is gracious and compassionate.
- 2:54He has provided food for those who fear Him.
- 2:56He remembers His covenant forever.
- 2:59He has shown His people the power of His works by giving
- 3:03them the inheritance of the nation's.
- 3:05The works of His hands are truth and justice.
- 3:09All His instructions are trustworthy.
- 3:12They are established forever and ever enacted in truth and in
- 3:17uprightness. He has sent redemption to His
- 3:20people. He has ordained His covenant
- 3:22forever. His name is holy and awe
- 3:25inspiring. The fear of Yahweh is the
- 3:28beginning of wisdom. All who follow his instructions
- 3:32have good insight. His praise endures forever.
- 3:38I love this, this Psalm. And I think there are a couple
- 3:42really helpful things that as we go through, it might encourage
- 3:45your heart even today. Many of you listen to this in
- 3:48the morning. So it might encourage you this
- 3:49morning for what you're going to go through today.
- 3:52So we start off in verse #1 and we see the declaration here of
- 3:56the psalmist. He says, praise the Lord.
- 3:58Hallelujah, I will praise Yahweh with all my heart.
- 4:03The call from God is don't just worship or praise me with your
- 4:07Sunday morning. Don't just worship me in the
- 4:10time of perhaps your morning devotions or when you listen to
- 4:14a Bible podcast or something with all of your heart, every
- 4:18aspect of you lift up the Lord that others would would know and
- 4:23recognize and see that you're one of the Jesus people because
- 4:27you praise him with every part of you.
- 4:30If you're at a, you know, Ravens game, you are a Jesus person
- 4:36who's at a Ravenscape. If you are at work, they know,
- 4:39oh, that's, that's a Christian. That's one of those Jesus people
- 4:43at your workplace within your family.
- 4:45They would know, OK, Dad, or, or my brother or my nephew, they
- 4:50love the Lord. May we be known as the people
- 4:54that praise God not just with a portion of our heart, but with
- 4:57all of our heart. He says I will praise Yahweh
- 5:00with all my heart in the assembly of the upright and in
- 5:04the congregation. God doesn't just want your
- 5:06private praise, though He certainly wants that.
- 5:09And that's the most important thing that we can do is to
- 5:12praise the Lord in private. But may we also praise the Lord
- 5:16as we interact with other believers here, the assembly of
- 5:20the upright and in the congregation.
- 5:22The way that you attend church says something about what you
- 5:27think about the Lord. Is church something that you get
- 5:30to when you have time for it, or is something, or is it something
- 5:33that you intentionally set aside time each week for?
- 5:37As God calls us to not forsake, not abandoned the gathering of
- 5:41ourselves together to worship as the habit of some people is, he
- 5:45says, but let's meet together. And all the more as we see the
- 5:49day of Jesus's return approaching.
- 5:52So we praise the Lord in the assembly of the upright and in
- 5:56the congregation. So the way we attend church
- 5:59declares how we praise the Lord, as well as the way that we sing.
- 6:05Maybe you don't have a great voice, maybe you're not always
- 6:09on tune, but if you have a smile on your face, if you're at least
- 6:13mouthing the words, then it can communicate to those around you,
- 6:18those beside you, those even on, you know, the the church
- 6:22platform that are looking out at the congregation.
- 6:25You can encourage the hearts of others through wholeheartedly
- 6:28praising the Lord in song. You can praise the Lord in how
- 6:32you pay attention to a sermon, or you can praise the Lord in
- 6:36how you genuinely like, love and interact with someone else.
- 6:41If your church has like a greeting time or before or after
- 6:44service. Every aspect of when we gather
- 6:47together as a church is a way that you can express worship to
- 6:51God. So let's praise God with all of
- 6:53our heart, even in the assembly of the upright and in the
- 6:56congregation. Verse #2 Yahweh's works are
- 6:59great, studied by all who delight in them.
- 7:03Do you delight in the works of our God?
- 7:07Are you excited about what God is doing in our world?
- 7:10Are you excited about what He did through Jesus?
- 7:12Are you excited about what He did in Scripture?
- 7:16And here when he's talking about the Lord's works are great,
- 7:18studied by all who delight in them.
- 7:20He's talking primarily at this point of the stories of the Old
- 7:24Testament, of the Torah, of God's creation, of the world, of
- 7:27the Garden of Eden, of his justice against sin, of his
- 7:32grace towards Noah and his family, his setting apart of
- 7:36Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, and his care for Joseph.
- 7:40And the way that he led Israel out in the Exodus with Moses and
- 7:44the way that he sustained them through those years.
- 7:46And what he did with Joshua and with Caleb, and what he did
- 7:50through the judges. And then I don't recall offhand.
- 7:54Psalm 111 doesn't say who wrote it.
- 7:57There's a decent chance it's David.
- 7:58It could be within David's own life that he thinks these are
- 8:01the works of the Lord. And so I'm going to study the
- 8:05works of the Lord. That's why I have Tabernacle
- 8:07talk. It's not because I don't have
- 8:10anything else to do with my time.
- 8:12It's because as we delight in our God, as we delight in His
- 8:17works, we are called to study them.
- 8:20We study Scripture. We want to know what God has
- 8:24said, how He said it, why He said it, what we can learn from
- 8:28the accounts in Scripture, what we can learn about our God
- 8:32through how he interacted with all of these generations.
- 8:36As we've been walking through the life of Jacob, even in our
- 8:40Sunday morning sermon series, this has been something that's
- 8:44been noticeable to me time and time and time again is God's
- 8:48patience and His care and His love towards people that are, by
- 8:53any human metric, unlovable. Jacob was a terrible person, and
- 8:59yet God loved him and forgave him and used him and protected
- 9:03him. And so I think so many times in
- 9:06our life, we need to know what God has done so that we can know
- 9:11what He will do. We need to know his character so
- 9:15that as we interact with hard times, we can know.
- 9:18I'm resting on the God of Jacob the Forgiver.
- 9:21I'm resting on the God of Mary, the God who does the impossible.
- 9:25I'm resting on the God of David who can equip the shepherd boy
- 9:28to defeat Goliath. I am resting on that God.
- 9:32And as we realize and as we study the works of the Lord, it
- 9:36brings delight to our heart. If studying Scripture is
- 9:40something that's dead or annoying to you, I want to
- 9:44encourage you to delight in what God has done.
- 9:48This is also something whether in, you know, a Bible podcast or
- 9:52in sermons, listen to people that make the heroes that make
- 9:58the hero of the stories in Scripture.
- 10:00The Lord that Jesus is the hero. Jesus is the one that we are
- 10:06looking to. Jesus is, if you will, he's.
- 10:09He's not just the moral example for what we should do, but it's
- 10:12all humans. We all, like sheep, have gone
- 10:16astray. We have turned everyone to our
- 10:17own way, but the Lord is laid on Jesus, the iniquity of us all
- 10:23that Jesus is the point of everything.
- 10:25If we look to scripture and we go, wow, Jacob was great, David
- 10:29was great, Nehemiah was great. We are not seeing what God
- 10:33desires for us to see as we see all of these things and as we
- 10:36see God work through these people.
- 10:38The point is always we have a good and worthy God who works
- 10:43through imperfect vessels. And God, I want to be a vessel
- 10:49that you use. I am imperfect.
- 10:50But the point is not may I become better, it's God.
- 10:55I want Jesus to live through man.
- 10:57I want your Holy Spirit to control me.
- 10:59I want you to be glorified. So the Lords works are great
- 11:02study by all those who delight in them.
- 11:05Verse #3 All that he does is splendid and majestic.
- 11:09His righteousness endures forever.
- 11:12God will always do what is ultimately right.
- 11:16That doesn't always happen on our timetable.
- 11:18It doesn't always line up with what we think he should do, but
- 11:21the everlasting, the enduring forever righteousness of God is
- 11:26something that we can rely on that we know.
- 11:28God, you will never do what is wrong because you have never
- 11:31done what is wrong. And you're not about to start
- 11:34now. So when I think that I know what
- 11:37should happen, God, I can pray to you.
- 11:39I can call to you for justice. I can ask for you to intervene.
- 11:43But I can know that whatever you are doing and whatever choice
- 11:46you choose to make, whether you listen and and if you will, if
- 11:52you listen to my prayer and you do what I'm asking you to do or
- 11:55not, I know that you are still righteous and good.
- 11:58And I will accept that. Verse #4 He has caused his
- 12:02wondrous works to be remembered. Yahweh is gracious and
- 12:07compassionate. God wants you to think about
- 12:09Him. He wants you to know what He has
- 12:12done and it is not because he is just egotistical.
- 12:16It's not just because he wants something from you.
- 12:19Instead, it's because he is gracious and compassionate.
- 12:23I'm going to take a look at these word gracious.
- 12:26This is merciful. He is kind towards us and He is
- 12:30compassionate. He has sympathy for us that the
- 12:34Lord in his goodness, his kindness, his sympathy, He knows
- 12:38that we need to remember his goodness and remember the mirror
- 12:43miracles. And so I want to encourage you
- 12:46when you are discouraged in your life, when you're disheartened,
- 12:50remember that you're kind and sympathetic.
- 12:53God has given you Scripture so that you would experience joy
- 12:59and you would take heart and courage for what you will face,
- 13:04because God has worked in the past and he's the same enduring
- 13:08forever God. And so He will work even in your
- 13:12future. Verse #5 He has provided food
- 13:15for those who fear him. He remembers His covenant
- 13:18forever. I think here I mentioned it
- 13:20often, but it just becomes so meaningful to me.
- 13:24The prayer in the Lord's Prayer give us this day, Our Daily
- 13:28Bread. And for those that believe that
- 13:30their daily sustaining comes from God, He provides food for
- 13:35them. And I'm so thankful that God has
- 13:36continued to provide for needs even in my life.
- 13:39I had this morning a text that I had received a few weeks ago.
- 13:44My daughter had to go into the emergency room for a whole
- 13:48thing. And it was just an incredibly
- 13:50scary time for me as her dad. And I got a text today that was
- 13:54I go, hey, here's the bill for this.
- 13:57And in my heart, I was like, OK, God, you know, I am not like I'm
- 14:02not rolling in the dough right now.
- 14:04Tabernacle talk isn't, you know, the, the new money making
- 14:07scheme. And so God, how am I going to
- 14:09take care of this? And through various
- 14:13circumstances, God was like, I've got you.
- 14:15I'm going to take care of you. I'm going to protect you, if you
- 14:19will. I am caring for you more even
- 14:22than you care for yourself or more than you even care for
- 14:24Evelyn. I am caring for you.
- 14:27And I'm so thankful that we have that God who remembers when God
- 14:30remembers. It's not like, oh, it was out of
- 14:33mind. And then now, oops, yes, I, I
- 14:36totally remember that now. No, when God remember something,
- 14:39it is He is choosing to act on it as a result of his
- 14:44remembrance. And so God is choosing to act on
- 14:47his covenant to provide and to care and to love for his people.
- 14:52And even when we think about the new covenant, the New Testament
- 14:57of the Holy Spirit living inside of us, of the fact that we are
- 15:00the children of God in this covenant, then that should bring
- 15:04us such comfort that our God will take care of us.
- 15:07I love the old hymn. God will take care of you
- 15:10through every day or all the way.
- 15:12God will take care of you. God will take care of you.
- 15:17Verse number six, he has shown his people the power of his
- 15:21works by giving them the inheritance of the nation's.
- 15:24Here God says Canaan was a land that had not once belonged to
- 15:29the children of Israel, but because of God's justice against
- 15:33the people that had been living in the land through their child
- 15:36sacrifice, through the abominations that they were
- 15:39acting on, even with animals and in in murdering people.
- 15:44Horrible oppression in so many ways.
- 15:47God gave that land to the children of Israel.
- 15:50He gave them an inheritance that they had not previously had.
- 15:55And what a good God that that is.
- 15:57And I think for us that we will one day inherit the earth.
- 16:02And you can read through the beginning Beatitudes.
- 16:04Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
- 16:07Or you can read in Revelation one and two that he, and I think
- 16:11even four and five, that God has made us a Kingdom of priests to
- 16:15our God. That one day we will be given
- 16:18the whole earth, That we will rule and reign with Christ.
- 16:22We will serve him, we will worship him, we will accomplish
- 16:25the works that he has set out for us.
- 16:27And God is giving us this inheritance in Christ Jesus.
- 16:32And so that powerful God who will one day give you
- 16:35everything, endless glory from Himself and love and affection
- 16:42as He's promised us even in Ephesians 2, that kindness that
- 16:45he will show us through all of eternity that God will take care
- 16:50of you today. And so you can rely on Him and
- 16:52believe in Him and worship him and trust in Him as a result.
- 16:57Verse #7 The works of his hands are truth and justice.
- 17:01How God works is both in truth. God will never lie to you.
- 17:05God will never tell you a half truth.
- 17:07Everything God does is truth. And so that's why we can say,
- 17:11but with Jesus in John 17, sanctify us through your truth.
- 17:16God, your word is truth. And so that's why we spend time
- 17:20studying Scripture is because God's work is truth and it is
- 17:25also justice. He says all his instructions are
- 17:28trustworthy. Everything that God has told you
- 17:31to do, the way that he has told you to live your life, I
- 17:33promise, even if you don't think you will end up on top, if you
- 17:37follow the word of God, you will get exactly what God has
- 17:41designed for you. And his designs are good and
- 17:44trustworthy. And at the end of our lives,
- 17:47sometimes even within the course of our lives, we see the justice
- 17:51of God at work. And ultimately, as Jesus
- 17:54returns, justice will be done on every person and in every
- 17:58situation. And so we can rely on this
- 18:01trustworthy and just God. There are evil moments in this
- 18:06world. Even this next Sunday I'm
- 18:07preaching and the passage involves rape and murder and
- 18:12lies and I'm thankful that our just God will deal with all sin
- 18:17forever. And so we do not have to worry
- 18:20about anyone, if you will, quote UN quote, getting away with it
- 18:23as Jesus himself suffered for sin.
- 18:26And then for those that reject the payment of Jesus, they will
- 18:30pay for their sins, but they will only do so in rejection of
- 18:36the payment of Jesus. Those that have said no, I will
- 18:39not have when Jesus is offering, I'm going to do it myself.
- 18:43God will say, OK, if that's what you want, I will give you that
- 18:48verse #8 they, the instructions of God are established forever
- 18:54and ever enacted in truth and in uprightness.
- 18:58There's no portion of God's word that we just throw away and we
- 19:01say, ah, well, that's that's not true or this isn't something
- 19:05that is important for me to know.
- 19:07All of Scripture, as Paul told Timothy, is given by inspiration
- 19:11of God. It's breathed out by God and it
- 19:13is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for
- 19:16instruction and righteousness. So that that the man or woman of
- 19:19God may be complete, thoroughly equipped, furnished for every
- 19:25good work. And so God's truth is
- 19:28established forever and ever. So rely on that verse #9 He has
- 19:32sent redemption to His people, that He has bought us back from
- 19:36sin and death and hell and Satan.
- 19:38We are now His possession and no one can take us out of the hand
- 19:42of our Father. He has ordained His covenant
- 19:45forever. There's never going to be a time
- 19:47when Jesus's work on our behalf is over and done with.
- 19:52There's never going to be a day where we don't experience the
- 19:55forgiveness and goodness of God. And then the end of verse 9.
- 19:59His name is holy. It's set apart, it's different,
- 20:02it's perfect in every way, and it is awe inspiring.
- 20:07That awe is something that we are called to view God with.
- 20:12And then the Solomons with this, the fear of Yahweh is the
- 20:15beginning of wisdom. If you want to be intelligent in
- 20:19God's way. It starts with recognizing how
- 20:22amazing, how terrifying, how wonderful, how Worshipful our
- 20:31God is. And so start with the fear of
- 20:34the Lord to say, I recognize what it is, as we learned in the
- 20:38book of Hebrews, that it's a terrifying thing to fall into
- 20:41the hands of a living God. But I also recognize that God is
- 20:45the Father who is waiting for me to return.
- 20:48And as I am still a far way off, He runs to me and embraces me
- 20:55and even honors me and and throws A feast for me.
- 20:59All of this is what our God is. And so may we worship Him in in
- 21:04terror and in fear and in deep respect and in worship, because
- 21:09He is worthy of all of it. Then I love all who follow His
- 21:12instructions. Have good insight.
- 21:14Listen to people that follow the instructions of the Word of God.
- 21:18Don't listen to a person that is always angry.
- 21:21Don't listen to a person that uses perverse language.
- 21:24Don't listen to a person that is always trying to like, sneak and
- 21:28connive and get the best deal out of someone in a nefarious or
- 21:33devious or sneaky way. Instead, follow the people that
- 21:37follow the instructions of God. They are the ones that have good
- 21:40insight. And then verse 10 and the Psalm
- 21:43ends. His praise endures forever.
- 21:46So that praise that we bring to God because He's worthy of it,
- 21:49even within the congregation, that praise should endure
- 21:51forever because His righteousness endures forever,
- 21:55because His covenant lasts forever, because His
- 21:59instructions are established forever and ever.
- 22:03All of this should spark in us the desire to follow, know, and
- 22:07love our God. Thanks for tuning in today.
- 22:10Looking forward to next week as we look at Psalm 112.
