- 1:34Adventures of Philip Marlow. The original air date is August sixth of nineteen forty
- 1:40nine, and the title is The August Lion get this and get it straight.
- 1:46Crime is a sucker's road, and those who travel it wind up in
- 1:49the gut of the prison of the grave. It started with death on my
- 1:53dostep, and got worse when I lied to a sympathetic bull, was pistoled
- 1:57with by a gorilla with dimples, and fought with a kitten on the keys.
- 2:00And it might have gone on that way all night if I hadn't been
- 2:04helped by the King of the Beasts. From the pen of Raymond Chandler,
- 2:08upstanding author of mystery, comes his most famous character and crime's most deadly enemy,
- 2:14as we present the Adventures of Philip Marlow now with Gerald Moore starred as
- 2:30Philip Morlow. We'll bring you tonight's exciting story, The August Lion. It
- 2:53was one of those in between us along about ten and a night at home,
- 2:58when you don't quite know what to do with yourself. Then all of
- 3:00a sudden it's eleven and then eleven thirty and you're in slippers in a robe
- 3:06and have done nothing, which is exactly where I was, except that I'd
- 3:10already decided on one and only one very dry martini, a quiet cigarette in
- 3:16bed. When it came loud, insistent, and unwoken. No improvement when
- 3:22I opened up and saw less than five feet of excited cab driver jumping up
- 3:25and down. Mallow. Yeah, I'm doc, Mallow. That's right here.
- 3:30It comes with a doc. You better make room. Is a soap
- 3:32of arrow, Okay, I'll clara. Wait a minute, Jack, who
- 3:35comes? Who? Okay, mister, bring her on in the dock's here?
- 3:38All right? Hey, doctor, she's stiff, she's out like a
- 3:40light. Who the babe? Who do you think? Sure? Too bad?
- 3:44Some people can't drink. Yeah, it's real tough. Now tell me,
- 3:46do you? That's an angel? I'm sorry to bust it on you.
- 3:50This way is a soaper, right, No, it's tough with granted,
- 3:52put her in the bedroom. Okay, will you take care of the
- 3:53driver please? Yeah? Yeah? How much? Friend? Well, there's
- 3:57only eighty cents on a meter, doctor, A couple of buck sort of
- 4:00cover it here? Good night, Good night, Diamond, Jim, Well,
- 4:06Phil, I guess i'd better explain all this. Uh huh, here,
- 4:10I haven't seen you in six months, and when I do, never
- 4:12mind the details. Jud boy, let's talk about the problem. Who's the
- 4:14girl? Her name is Voss Eileen Voss. She's kind of a stockbroker,
- 4:18maybe speculators a better term, you know, takes big chances with other people's
- 4:23money. I was in love with a phil and till tonight when what happened.
- 4:28When I found out I was just one of many, it threw me.
- 4:30Phil, I really lost my temper. I swore i'd kill her on
- 4:32site. Yeah, most guys do at a time like that, Jed.
- 4:35And what's that got to do with her being drunk? By the way,
- 4:39while we're talking, I'll put on some coffee now, No, don't feel
- 4:43why not, because it can't help. She had a shot too many,
- 4:46all right, only this one was a bullet in her head. She's dead.
- 4:50Oh fine, now, Phil, listen, please, you've got to
- 4:53help me. I've got to find out who did it. Phil. It
- 4:57started a couple of hours ago when I found out she'd been playing before Sucker.
- 5:00I went to have placed the first time in a week, Boiling Man.
- 5:03The door was opened. Jats An Angel's eyes never left my face as
- 5:05he told the story from the beginning, A girl's buddy on the couch when
- 5:10he walked in and eat hole in the back of her head. A gun
- 5:13he knew she owned shoved under a pillow. Then in the next second,
- 5:15before he could even look in the other rooms, the arrival of the cabby
- 5:18is somebody called who thought Eileen was just another drunk who had to be shown
- 5:21the way to go home. How he seized on that as an opportunity to
- 5:26keep from being placed at the scene of the murder. He had every reason
- 5:28to commit. How minutes after he was in the cabb he realized it was
- 5:31near my place. How to avoid suspicion, he said, I was a
- 5:34doctor, everything except why specifically he was so afraid of the police. I
- 5:39knew that was going to be next. Now, Phil, I suppose you
- 5:42want to know why I couldn't possibly call the police. Yeah, that's right.
- 5:46Why because I'd surely be booked and fingerprinted, and that had ruined me.
- 5:51You see, a long time ago, I said, time when the
- 5:54state penitentiary in Illinois. What, yes, Yes, So I've kept it
- 5:59quiet only Phoebe Hammond in my office nodes. It was before Jery, Phil,
- 6:03it was under another name, and way back when I didn't know the
- 6:05difference between clever business and crooked business. It's taken ten years to work up
- 6:10my reputation as an accountant. So you see, if I get mixed up
- 6:14in this in law, come out and well smash lots of pieces. No
- 6:18more. Oh, you've got to help me, Fiel. You've got to
- 6:21find the real killer before the police get to me. Please, Fil,
- 6:25I can't Judd be smashing just as many little pieces for me too if I
- 6:29try to pull anything like this on homicide. Oh, I'm sorry, Jud,
- 6:32I've got to report this body. But Phil, Look what if you
- 6:34do report the body, but you say that you don't know anything about it,
- 6:38that you're going out to find what you can? What about that?
- 6:40Phil? Oh? Please please Phil? Okay, what's the girl's address?
- 6:47Ninety one Hollycrest Drive. Yeah, the door wasn't locked. Fill your phone
- 6:51number, Jed. Let's doone three nine. I won't move out of my
- 6:55place until I hear from you and make sure you know, Jed, because
- 6:58if I can't find the real killer, I've got to tell what I know
- 7:00about you. You understand that, don't you. When Angel left, I
- 7:08called Detective Lieutenant Matthews the police headquarters and lied that there was a corpse in
- 7:11my apartment about which I knew nothing. That I was on my way out
- 7:14to see what I could find, and I hung up fast, not feeling
- 7:17very good. Twenty minutes later, when I was in the plush living room
- 7:20at ninety one Holy Crest Drive, I had zero to go on until I
- 7:25got to the bedroom where caught in the folds of lace at the bottom of
- 7:28a petticoat of vanity, I found a piece of male jewelry that stood out
- 7:31against that backdrop, like argyle socks on a turtle. It was a gold
- 7:35tie class, ornamented with a figure of a lion, a little more majestic
- 7:40than most. I dropped it into my pocket and then moved out into a
- 7:44long hall that led to the kitchen. I was about to start tottered when
- 7:47he spoke, don't move, buddy. Like the voice, he was thicking
- 7:54soft, especially in the middle where he was girdled and double breasted gray flannel,
- 7:58so I couldn't tell whether he was plus it's a thie class. Also,
- 8:01he had no hair and a pair of deep timples that danced when he
- 8:05talked, a gun in his hand. Didn't Okay, turn around, Let's
- 8:11go back to the living room, buddy. I want to ask you a
- 8:13few questions, like why you're taken inventory here? Well, it's my job,
- 8:16you see, I'm an auctioneer. The lady of the house won't need
- 8:20this stuff anymore. She's not gonna. I stop where you are and don't
- 8:24turn around. Okay, where's the girl? Come on? Come on?
- 8:28Where is she out? And only if you'll tell me why? You want
- 8:31to know? Well, I tell you a way. You see that way
- 8:33I come out even maybe Lyleen voice owes me money, buddy, and I
- 8:39want it now before she's flat broke. Now you worr? Is she on
- 8:43away to the morgue like you don't know? What do you mean by that?
- 8:46I didn't kill her, honest engine. Listen, you get this straight.
- 8:50I came into this place just now for one reason, only to check
- 8:54on the Voss girl and make sure she wasn't on her way out of town
- 8:56bag and baggage in hand and my fifty grand and I don't forget that.
- 9:01I'll try not to and don't move. Hello, No, no, she's
- 9:05not here, she Judy. Yeah it's me, honey. No, No,
- 9:13she's she's out. Yeah. Well, I'll tell you about it later
- 9:18at the club. Yeah right, Judy, So long? Now where were
- 9:26we, buddy? In the middle of a big fat lie or reason for
- 9:28being here. Oh yeah, that's where we were. And you know that's
- 9:35a good old lace to leave it, buddy. When the twin telephone lamps
- 9:48and end tables next to me got back to being one of each again,
- 9:52I saw the note next to the phone that said call Monday at the garden
- 9:56Room. It's did mad too much, and I realized that Monday was spelled
- 10:01not as the day in the week, but mundy Why And I recalled the
- 10:05garden Room was a cozy collection of crepe paper flowers where some people did their
- 10:09serious drinking that plus dancing dimples, telling a girl named Judy who had called
- 10:13for Eileen in the first place, that he meet her at the club was
- 10:16a little better than the zero plus tie class I've been working with. And
- 10:20a half hour later that little became a lot when things started the dovetail because
- 10:24a placard under glass in front of the garden Room bragged about the glamour pus
- 10:28pianist featured inside, whose name was first Judy, second Monday, not as
- 10:31day in the week. I blessed my good luck exchange smiles only with a
- 10:35headsheg girl in the lobby and found a table for one inside, not more
- 10:39than a half a dozen octives away from this Monday's left hand. I'd ordered
- 10:43a drink and had a cigarette going before she paid any attention to me.
- 10:50I'll play anything you want. It's the rule of the house. Just name
- 10:54it. Ahummet oh whistle. But don't that's also a rule of the house.
- 11:03What will it be? How about the number you always play for that
- 11:05fat friend of yours, you know, the one with the deep temples?
- 11:09Be sure, kind of corny remember it? Yeah, you're a friend of
- 11:20his exactly. I didn't think so. He'd crown you. Have you heard
- 11:24you say? Dimples? He's sensitive? Yeah you here, aren't you.
- 11:30I have been in once or twice. Mutual friend of ours used to speak
- 11:33well of you. I lean boss made a change of mind. She was
- 11:37murdered tonight. Any idea? Who did it? I said, I heard
- 11:41you, No, mister, I haven't got the slightest idea. That's the
- 11:50end of your request. Sorry, but I'm only allowed one to accustom it.
- 11:52It's a rule of the house, I know. Yeah, I'll see
- 11:54you, Judy. Hello, this is marlo' angel. Oh Phil, what
- 12:11are you? What have you found out in that order? I'm in a
- 12:13phone booth at a club called the Garden Room. What I've found out so
- 12:16far won't impressed Detective Lieutenant Matthews of a homicide squad at all. When next
- 12:20we meet nothing in the apartment, no lead of any kind. I'm not
- 12:24sure. Jed, I ran into a round man with a sleek gun,
- 12:26who piled me up and left before very much was said fulfilled the Garden Room,
- 12:31the girl there's a funder. Ireens talked to her. Yeah, yeah,
- 12:33I already did. Jed got me the round man's name and no more.
- 12:35It was BLETHI you mean anything? Yeah, a fat guy with hair,
- 12:43that's right, he claimed Eileen at fifty grand that belong to him.
- 12:46That must be him? Men phil oh, Yes, she's a gray markeety
- 12:48that comes from San Francisco. I've never seen him with the girl in my
- 12:50office. Phoebe Hammond Canopas. She once did some auditing work for Burlat but
- 12:54she found out how crooked he was. She told me about him. I'll
- 12:58call her and have her meet you then, Field All right, but look,
- 13:00I'll be at a corner table facing the door and tell it to hurry,
- 13:01will you I'll call you back later. Goodbye. It was exactly one
- 13:15o'clock when what was at least three part cpa to each part woman pushed the
- 13:18front door out of a way and entered it. At the top there was
- 13:20close cropped hair streaked with some gray, no hat. At the bottom,
- 13:26dock brown stockings running into dark of brown shoes, no heels in between,
- 13:30severely tailored tweed closed tight at the neckline. It took all of fifteen efficient
- 13:35seconds to decide that I was her man, and less than that again to
- 13:37introduce herself, asked for a cigarette and name her drink, and it was
- 13:41my turn to talk. I'd brought her up to date. Eileen Voss's murder
- 13:43included, it's too bad MANO just a great guy. Yeah, it was
- 13:48only lunch today that he was knocking himself out trying to figure what would be
- 13:52for over my birthday next week. Now this tell me what can I do
- 13:58to help? Well? At the moment, LEI, all I know about
- 14:01him is Hammond. Aside from what I told Jul he said at Eileen's is
- 14:03that he and Judy Monday are a team. And Judy was a friend of
- 14:07Aileen how cozy. Well, it goes like this. Billefee's front name is
- 14:11Steve, and he's out of San Francisco via Detroit and Chicago, and in
- 14:16each case only a length of the subpoena ahead of the law. Oh.
- 14:18Back in the thirties he was a mobster, the numbers, game protection,
- 14:22rackets, that kind of stuff. But after the war he cashed in all
- 14:26his chips and went into a mo or less legitimate business with of course,
- 14:30absolutely no change in tactics. Know what you mean? Now, Look,
- 14:33can you tell me where he lives? No? But I bet my bottom
- 14:37dollar that the kitten on the keys here can only be careful. B Leffie
- 14:41has a reputation for shooting first and talking later. I only hope he isn't
- 14:45after Judge two. You know, there might be some connection between them that
- 14:50goes back to the dates when Judd was Francis Lyon and BELEFFI, Babe,
- 14:56did you just say Francis Lyon? That's right? Oh? Why? Oh,
- 15:00Judson Angel is the name he took when he came out here. Why
- 15:03what does that mean? I don't know. Here, Look at this thie
- 15:07class the ornament. It's also a lion I found it in the bedroom at
- 15:13Eileen's place, And yet Judd told me that he hadn't gone past the living
- 15:16room. But marlow that doesn't prove that Judd lied. Why it might not
- 15:22be his at all? Have you ever seen it perform? No? I
- 15:24haven't. Besides, I never knew jud to wear a tie. Clab okay
- 15:28could belong to Billippi, but it's still worth checking. After we get Jut
- 15:33out of his apartment. Look, where's your place, Phoebe mul Holland,
- 15:35drive three sixty one, three sixty one, bought a mile up into the
- 15:37hill. I'll let you do the trick, honey. You go home and
- 15:39stay close to the fireside. I'll get a hold of Judd and tell him
- 15:43to get over that fast, and then maybe we we can, maybe we
- 15:46can. What what is it, Marlon outside Mahybe? It's a man coming
- 15:50this way? Worse? Goodbye, baby, I'll see you later at your
- 15:54place. I've been afraid of this all night. Who is it? What
- 15:56his name? Detective Lieutenant Matthews? He's a police of Phoebe, First last
- 16:00and always so long. In just a moment, the second act of Philip
- 16:15Marlowe, but first music you like best of all, whether it's classical favorites
- 16:19or popular old ballads, is the music you hear when you tune in Sunday
- 16:22afternoon to the Symphonette and the Coraliers. This Sunday, the Symphonet plays popular
- 16:29operatic pieces and has his guest, Milton k. Pianis, who will play
- 16:33the final movement from Rochmaninov's Cancerto Number two in C minor. The male Choir
- 16:38and Lenny Stokes, featured baritone of the Chris will Bring You Pale Moon,
- 16:44the Wizard of Oz, Alice blue Gown, make Believe in other favorites.
- 16:48Yes, it's the music you like when you tune in the Symphonet and the
- 16:52Coraliers every Sunday overmost of these same CBS stations. Now at our Star,
- 16:59Gerald, we returned to the second act of Philip Marlowe and Tonight's story,
- 17:04The August Lion. When I left Phoebe Hammond at the table and moved toward
- 17:19the bar, my first impulse was run, do not walk. This is
- 17:22a different kind of an emergency. But a quick glance into the mirror behind
- 17:26me taged that is suicide and pushed try nonchalance into its place, because I
- 17:30could see that Detective Lieutenant Matthews had already spotted me when he was closer.
- 17:34I could also see that nonchalance would go over like punching him in the nose
- 17:38on the steps of city halls. All right, Phil, that little game
- 17:41is over. Now let's have it straight and fast. Who are you working
- 17:45for? And don't bother with the pitch on professional ethics, So we'll try
- 17:48this all over again down in headquarters. His name? What is it?
- 17:52Phil? Judson? Angel is a friend who is wanted the corps. He
- 17:56was in love with her, but he didn't kill her. I look,
- 17:57Matthews, I've never held out on you before, have I, which means
- 18:02you want to start now? Huh? What are you getting at? Phil?
- 18:04My client's in a jam, Lieutenant. He didn't kill the girl,
- 18:07but unless I can find out who did, he's and I brought deep in
- 18:08a mess. It doesn't even concern him. Which has what to do with
- 18:11you playing bashful tipster on the phone, with the body being in your bedroom
- 18:15and Marlow starring like a one man police force. Will you listen? I'm
- 18:18on, Phil, I've been an hour and a half just finding in a
- 18:21level. Why is this judson angel in a jam? If he didn't do
- 18:25it? Okay, okay, we'll try it, hones slily. He once
- 18:27did time in another state under another name, way back when he had less
- 18:30sense. If he's booked and fingerprinted, it'll be splashed all over the papers.
- 18:33He'll be ruined. Why what's his business? Well, today it's a
- 18:37count and see and then it was forgery. You can see that side by
- 18:40side. They don't make a very handsome couple. Now, come on,
- 18:42Matthews, give the guy a break. Will you take my word? He
- 18:45deserves it. What do you want me to do? Give me some time.
- 18:48If I don't have the answer to him, out of luck, and
- 18:49so is Judge's angel. Please match you? All right? All right,
- 18:52Phil, all right? Sixty minutes, and if I don't hear from you
- 18:56by ten, alfter two we start all over again. Donald Headquarters, your
- 18:59client included, I'll be waiting for your call Field. Good night. Detective.
- 19:10Lieutenant Matthews was nobody's keystone cop. And I knew that when he said
- 19:12sixty count, I'm sixteen minutes, he meant just that, and no more.
- 19:17So. I found a nice and public phone booth at the gas station
- 19:18across the street, and while I kept one eye out for Bert lefe and
- 19:22the associates, I dialed Judge and Angel's number. But in the next second,
- 19:26when I was through to him, I knew that I could forget about
- 19:27Burt LEFFI on my end, Pil, I'm in trouble here outside. A
- 19:30man and woman. They're coming up the walk now. He's fat and gray
- 19:33flannel. Yes, yes, she just pulled up in a cab and he's
- 19:36been out there twenty minutes watching the place. Berleffie, listen, Judd,
- 19:37get out the back way, get over to Phoebe's place. Huh, he's
- 19:41out the doing of Phil. He's kicking it in Phil, Phil, get
- 19:45up here twenty one South Orange Lane. Judd, do as I say.
- 19:48Will you get out, get the Phoebe's place. I'mulhalland drive. I'll see
- 19:51you there. Hurry all right, Bno, all right, follow Judd.
- 19:55Put that phone down. Angel, I'll kill you now. And I screeched
- 20:06towards top at number twenty one South Orange Lane, which was lights out,
- 20:07front, door open and no car parked in sight. I went inside just
- 20:11physical in the moonlight was the huddle figure. I'd been afraid i'd find.
- 20:15What I didn't know until I was kneeling next to it was that it was
- 20:18Judy Monday, not my client, and only unconscious, not dead. It
- 20:22was a large white envelope lying next to her, and beyond that a litter
- 20:23of broken porcelain that had once been a lamp. I switched on a light,
- 20:27found some brandy, and then brought her to as fast as I could
- 20:33Marlow and with a brand new request. Here take a drink. I'll ask
- 20:37the questions one, what happened here with the three of you, wesbur Leffie
- 20:40and more important Judt Angel. Come on, baby talk forbout all right?
- 20:44My angel got away. I don't know where he is. BURLEFFI dead.
- 20:48I hope I got him to thank for that lamp. Getting together with my
- 20:51head angel made a break for I'd kicked out the lights and tossed a lamp
- 20:55at the same time. Here old bur Leffie used me for a shield and
- 20:57took off after him. Your connection with both Burlefi and Eileen Voss, what
- 21:02was it? I forget? I'm on, Judy, baby talk. You're
- 21:04not gonna get another chance. The side of the witness box, witness box
- 21:10for a girlfriend's murder, trial by jury and old Yankee tradition. You remember,
- 21:15I didn't have anything to do with Eileen getting killed. They can't tie
- 21:17that under me. They can try, Now, what'll it be? It'll
- 21:19be It'll be what you want. That's better. I only got chumming with
- 21:26Eileen in the last month marrow because Berlettie told me to. He was my
- 21:30boyfriend. Hooray for love. Go on? What was in it for Berlefe?
- 21:33He wanted to know where Eileen got her tips on the market. That
- 21:34way he could get paying her any commission. Figures. What went wrong?
- 21:38Nothing on. Instead of finding out how well she knew who, I discovered
- 21:41she was going broke. Period. The rest of it you Aileen being dead,
- 21:47that muscle woman you talked to in the barrow. Wait a minute,
- 21:48Wait a minute, what about that girl in the bar You two get together,
- 21:52not for very long. After you left the table, she went outside,
- 21:56So I followed, why because the cow jumped over the moon? And
- 22:00what do you think are we still working from the lefte Remember, I thought
- 22:04it would help if he knew where she fit in. What did you get?
- 22:07You slap in the face, I said. She was raised on bar
- 22:11bells. And this envelope here that fell out of her pocket. Oh,
- 22:14don't get excited about it. It's only one of those horoscope charts. What
- 22:17do you do? Collect him? As I having well their notes on the
- 22:18back. Yeah. However for Frienville left, he was unimpressed. Yeah,
- 22:25look yourself, it's double talk. Course, bus was ten percent ninety days
- 22:30when he was saying, yeah, strictly a CPA's margin nose doesn't mean it
- 22:33you Molly your mouth open, what is it? You look dumb? Dumb
- 22:37I am and have been all night, sweetheart. In your own clumsy way,
- 22:41you may have saved justson angels life. What are you talking about,
- 22:44Marla? According to this horoscope, it's written in this tize. Maybe I'll
- 22:48make a good cup happy goodbye sweets. O'halland drive is a fancy collection of
- 23:06half in turns and deceptive curves along the top of a mountain that separates Hollywood
- 23:08and Beverly Hills from the San Fernando Valley. But when I was on it
- 23:11and burning up good rubber at each bend as I headed for number three sixty
- 23:15one north gas pedal on the floor driving conditions with the least of my worries.
- 23:19And it wasn't until I had parked away from the bungalow that perched on
- 23:22the edge of a cliff, and was out of my car thirty eight and
- 23:25a half and close to a half open French window that I breathed a long,
- 23:29long sigh of relief, because then I could clearly see that jets and
- 23:33Angel was still alive. I swallowed the side fast. When I could also
- 23:36see Angel's face. It said there was nothing permanent about his good health because
- 23:41on the other side of the room it only visible to me via corner mirror.
- 23:45Was the reason why holy On Tight was short. Ugly Revolver was the
- 23:49one the horoscope had said could be Eileen Voss's killer, a CPA known as
- 23:55Phoebe Hammond. While she talked, I moved around to where I'd be able
- 23:57to take aim in one about everything. Didn't want to kill Eileen in the
- 24:03first place. It was an accident. It doesn't matter now, you see,
- 24:07I'd invested some money with a judge, money that wasn't mine. I
- 24:11found out she was going broke. I went up to see her and demanded
- 24:14it back. She laughed at me. I got mad. I hit her.
- 24:18She took out a gun and said she'd call the police if I didn't
- 24:21leave. I grabbed it away from her. Then I shot her. Then
- 24:25you were there when I came in. Yes, and when I saw you
- 24:29and that cab driver she'd called earlier, take the body. I didn't know
- 24:33what to do until later, when I met with Marlow on your behalf and
- 24:36learned all about Blefi and the thie class beat done the tie class with a
- 24:41lion on us. That you'd recognize his mine if Marlo ever got the chance
- 24:45to show it to you. But he won't, Judge, I can't let
- 24:47him. Phoebe. Phoebe, you're crazy. You're crazy. You'll never get
- 24:49away with her. Oh, yes I will, Judd. It'll be Billefi.
- 24:52They'll blame. He entered your room with a gun in his hand.
- 24:55I know I saw him and that girl also, Judd, I'm the reason
- 24:57you got away from him. I rammed into his car when he started after
- 25:02you. Too bad. Jud worse than that, Phoebe. It's a crying
- 25:07shame. The light step, Phils, you can see your silhouette, I
- 25:11can follow of footsteps were even filled the terrace. She's trying to get away.
- 25:15There, she's outside. She trip filled the rail. Oh, oh,
- 25:33holy smoke, Phil, it's a it's a good two hundred feet down,
- 25:41just solid rock. Yeah, went away from it, Jad, time
- 25:48we made a phone call. MM. It was four o'clock in the morning
- 25:59and we were still on up the mountain before the police had found the broken
- 26:02body of Phoebe Hammond and ber Lefi had been picked up and in lieu of
- 26:06anything better, booked for breaking and entering Eileen Voss's place, and the parade
- 26:11of law pressed and just curious who always show up at the scene of a
- 26:15murder and finally left. It made it just me and Judd, a copp
- 26:19named Matthews. Well, let me see if I got this straight for the
- 26:23records film. First you thought it was a tough called Burlefi, and second
- 26:29you were afraid you'd been a sucker and it was really your client. And
- 26:33finally you figured it had to be a woman who all the way looked like
- 26:36she was no more than along for the right. What do you mean you
- 26:40really believe I could have got filmed? Well, yeah, it looked that
- 26:42way for a while. Jad. You know you said you hadn't been passed
- 26:45the living room up at Eileen's, and yet I found a thie class in
- 26:48the bedroom there, ornamented with a lion. And then I found out your
- 26:52real name was also Lion. It almost added. Yeah, but since you
- 26:55didn't have a chance to find out whether or not Burlefi was missing a Thai
- 26:57clasp, you still consider that was only circumstantial elevens right right, yeah,
- 27:03until I ran into the switch, which was an envelope that had belonged to
- 27:06Phoebe Hammond. It was a horoscope chart inside, which meant, well,
- 27:10it only meant that she went in for that stuff. No more until I
- 27:15remembered her mentioning that her birthday was next week, which is early August,
- 27:18and that no doubt puts her under the sign of the zodiac run by one
- 27:21Leo the Lion. Yes, and the managed tight neck suits you always wore
- 27:26could have met a shirt and tie underneath minus class exactly, gentlemen. That's
- 27:32it now, me, lieutenant. Look when you get back down the headquarters
- 27:40and you know you start the paperwork. Yeah, yeah, I have to
- 27:42mention a guy named Judson Angel, a guy named what Judson age and nothing,
- 27:52nothing, I was just thinking out loud. Yeah, yeah, that's
- 27:55a bad practice fit. You know, it's kind of like only telling a
- 27:57policeman half of what you know. It can get you in trouble unless you're
- 28:02lucky. Oh, give you a left, mister, you missed you already
- 28:07have, Thanks, Lieutenant and Phil. Good night Judd. When Judd and
- 28:27the Lieutenant left, I figured i'd have a last cigarette on the terrace think
- 28:32a little about the desperate people i'd met. On a night that had started
- 28:36out to be quiet, I found myself not smoking, not watching the early
- 28:41sun brighten the valley below, and not thinking about much of anything except the
- 28:47overturned stone flower pot that was lying next to the splendid rail where Babe Hammond
- 28:52the tripped and taking her final plunge. It was an ordinary square flower pot
- 28:57with an ordinary flower in it. The figure in relief on the side was
- 29:03a lion resting on its haunches, And you know, as I looked at
- 29:10it, I thought it was a little more majestic than most The Adventures of
- 29:38Philip Marlowe Bringing You Raymond, Chandler's most famous character and crime's most deadly enemy,
- 29:44starred Gerald Moore and was directed Tonight by Cliff Howell. Script is by
- 29:48Meldon la Robert Mitchell and Gene Lovitt. Featured in the cast were Gene Bates,
- 29:55D. J. Thompson, Wally Mayer, Bonnie Phillips, and Jerry
- 29:57Hausner. Lieutenant Detective Matthews is played by Larry Dupkins. The special music is
- 30:03written by Richard Durant. Be sure and be with us next week when Philip
- 30:11Marlowe says, it started with an Indian gift of a piece of pottery and
- 30:17led to a brown bear and mocksins and archaeologist, much laughing water, and
- 30:19finally death in an alley. But just to make matters worse, the Indian
- 30:23giver was a female and one hundred percent genuine, hot blooded apache. They
- 30:41cracked the phantom voice question on Singing again last Saturday, so the jackpot is
- 30:45down to minimum only fifty thousand dollars, although looking at it optimistically, fifty
- 30:49thousand dollars is still the largest jackpot in radio. You get other nice prizes
- 30:55just for solving those gay little riddle songs, and it's one of the most
- 30:57entertaining hours you'll find all week. So if you like fun and riddles and
- 31:02good tunes, even if you don't care about fifty thousand dollars. Here's singing
- 31:06again tonight on most of these same CDs stations. This is Joe Walter speaking,
- 31:11stay tuned now for Gangbusters, which follows immediately over most of these same
- 31:15stations. This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System, welcome back. Well,
- 31:36a few interesting things here. First of all, great to hear Wally
- 31:40Mayor in this episode, who is an actor who will be starring in a
- 31:45great detective series. Will be playing after we get through the Saint in about
- 31:49nine months, when we play Michael Shane Private Detective, so he'll be with
- 31:56us shortly in that role. It's kind of an interesting pon that CBS used
- 32:02here on the word lion because this episode aired in August of forty nine,
- 32:09and it was just a little less than eight months previously that Jeff Reagan,
- 32:17often nicknamed the lions Eye, went off the air and it was actually coming
- 32:25back in two months with Frank Graham in the title role instead of Jack Webb.
- 32:32So an interesting pun given that it ties into CBS's future and past shows.
- 32:42Also, I liked this episode because it added a little bit more realism
- 32:50and complexity to Philip Marlow's relationship with the police, because it seemed like,
- 32:57particularly in some of the earlier radio episodes when Lieutenant Ebarrow was in charge,
- 33:05that Marlow could just go off and take the case over for the police and
- 33:10be acting as if he's a fully functioning member of the police in some cases
- 33:15even pushing around the person who is actually the policeman. And you know,
- 33:21there's some realistic being mythed without going over the top, and certainly I think
- 33:28it's a nice touch. So I like that, very nice turn on that
- 33:31episode. We do have one listener comment to get to, and this is
- 33:37from Bobby Lee Walker, who says, as you know, I've been listening
- 33:40to yours, truly Johnny Doller for several years now. I decided to give
- 33:45some of the other shows a try. My wife and I watched this episode
- 33:49of the Philip Marlow TV series and love it. I will be adding it
- 33:52to my list of regulars. Thank you for turning me on to a great
- 33:55show. Well, thanks so much, Bobby Lee. Thing that is said
- 34:00is that the two episodes of Philip Marlow's television show we played are actually the
- 34:08only two that are in circulation there was an entire season of twenty three episodes.
- 34:16All of them are public domain because they weren't for nude, but only
- 34:21two have come to line. If we find anymore, I'll be sure and
- 34:23let you know. And I hope you've enjoyed the Philip Marlow TV series with
- 34:29Phil Carey, and you know, if you do have any thoughts on them,
- 34:34I would love to hear from you on them. All Right, Well,
- 34:37that will do it for today. We will be back tomorrow with Nick
- 34:40Carter and join us next Wednesday for another episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow.
