- 1:12Speaker 1: Turner on your radio and he has sprinted up here.
- 1:15Speaker 1: He's coach.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Thank you. How are you? I'm doing well? Yeah? Forgive
- 1:19Speaker 3: me if I'm breathing in No, that's okay.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I mean you guys are doing a lot today, like
- 1:22Speaker 1: a lot of schools. I mean, y'all are getting ready
- 1:25Speaker 1: for Meet the Dogs tonight. You got a scrimmage tonight.
- 1:27Speaker 1: You've been watching films, so it's been a fast and
- 1:29Speaker 1: fearious day for you guys.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Man, we're excited. Uh, you know, everybody's hyping it up,
- 1:33Speaker 4: but there's just noise right now at this point. You know,
- 1:35Speaker 4: you got so many guys that have elected to be
- 1:38Speaker 4: a part of this team and in this community. You know,
- 1:41Speaker 4: at Brandon and Man, like I said, no, you're.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Good, you're good.
- 1:45Speaker 4: But it's so cool to see these guys kind of
- 1:47Speaker 4: buy all the in. Were just talking to about this
- 1:49Speaker 4: off the air. It's like, man, these guys are showing
- 1:51Speaker 4: up then and asked to show up. Who wants to
- 1:52Speaker 4: be in at five forty five in the morning. And
- 1:55Speaker 4: you've got parents that are trying their best to say, hey,
- 1:58Speaker 4: we're dedicated. So the fact that the kids are showing up,
- 2:01Speaker 4: the parents, like you're seeing the whole buy in from
- 2:03Speaker 4: the community saying hey, we're all in, let's go. So
- 2:07Speaker 4: from a coach's standpoint, we can't be more grateful. You know,
- 2:10Speaker 4: we're thankful for that. And so man, we're just thankful
- 2:12Speaker 4: for parents that are allowing us to coach their little
- 2:15Speaker 4: ones and they're to make them become you know, better men,
- 2:18Speaker 4: you know, for the future. And we've got some athletes man,
- 2:21Speaker 4: Like I'm excited to see what they're going to do.
- 2:23Speaker 4: We're retired of playing ourselves, I'm sure. Yeah, Ga Tunter
- 2:26Speaker 4: said that, Like they know what we're doing. We know
- 2:29Speaker 4: what they're doing. We're like, all right, when can we play?
- 2:33Speaker 3: Man?
- 2:33Speaker 1: Let me ask you this. Me and Rod with Missus
- 2:35Speaker 1: Beech Forrets Medics. We're just talking about this and this
- 2:38Speaker 1: is not a shot at Brandon and all. This could
- 2:40Speaker 1: happen anywhere. I was talking about. It's amazing how quickly
- 2:43Speaker 1: you can lose it in football and then how quickly
- 2:46Speaker 1: you can get it back. And what I mean is,
- 2:48Speaker 1: you know and Sam Williams, you know him well, You
- 2:50Speaker 1: and Sam, I believe were at stayed together. Sam had
- 2:54Speaker 1: it rolling. And then when Sam left whatever whatever happened
- 2:56Speaker 1: last year just didn't work for whatever reason, and they
- 3:00Speaker 1: lost it. And now it feels like it's back, Like
- 3:03Speaker 1: the energy is different here. Visiting with Tyson Robinson, visiting
- 3:07Speaker 1: with Slaton Shack, Coach Clinton, you know, visit with coach Hunter,
- 3:10Speaker 1: Visiting with yourself and we've talked off the air and stuff.
- 3:12Speaker 1: It's it's weird how you can lose momentum but then
- 3:15Speaker 1: it can shift and you can get it back.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Leadership matters, right.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Right, no doubt, Coach Clinton's doing a great job. He's
- 3:22Speaker 4: given Coach Hunter and an opportunity to say, hey, do
- 3:24Speaker 4: what you feel best. I'm putting a ball in your
- 3:26Speaker 4: quarter on defense for me and offense for Coach Hunner,
- 3:28Speaker 4: and he's doing some things. I love what Coach Hunter's
- 3:31Speaker 4: doing and bring into it. For me, it's kind of
- 3:33Speaker 4: finding out what we can attain, you know, coming from
- 3:35Speaker 4: a college background, what can we absorb and know because
- 3:39Speaker 4: there's no reasons and putting something out there that we're
- 3:41Speaker 4: not gonna be consistent with. Right, But everything that we do,
- 3:46Speaker 4: you know, defensively is all about alignment. Assignment. We're I mean,
- 3:49Speaker 4: we're really good. We feel comfortable with that. But it's
- 3:51Speaker 4: it's cool to see Coach Clinton kind of just say, hey, man,
- 3:54Speaker 4: I'm not going to try to micro Hey, I trust
- 3:56Speaker 4: the guys that I brought in, you know, you know,
- 3:59Speaker 4: I was telling them we were talk to a pearance
- 4:00Speaker 4: this summer is like, man, you trust him, Like keep
- 4:04Speaker 4: trusting us that we're gonna we're gonna do everything under
- 4:06Speaker 4: his leadership and to make this thing like everybody's desiring
- 4:09Speaker 4: to be right. And so we're excited about him, We
- 4:12Speaker 4: really are. It's just fun. It's a it's a new
- 4:14Speaker 4: chapter for me and my family, but it's it's it's
- 4:16Speaker 4: really fun to see this all come to a fruition.
- 4:18Speaker 3: You know.
- 4:19Speaker 1: So for those that don't know, talk a little bit
- 4:21Speaker 1: about what kind of defense you're gonna put on the field.
- 4:23Speaker 1: You mentioned it, you come from a college background. You know,
- 4:26Speaker 1: you obviously were with Jackson Academy last year, part of
- 4:29Speaker 1: a state championship team. What kind of you know, kind
- 4:32Speaker 1: of your philosophy and just kind of you know, at
- 4:34Speaker 1: a at a high level ten thousand foot what a
- 4:36Speaker 1: coach turner defense looks like.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Man, we it really goes back to being sound like
- 4:41Speaker 4: I've learned this from a lot of people from being
- 4:43Speaker 4: in so this be my third year in high school
- 4:46Speaker 4: and it's probably the only time I actually say this
- 4:48Speaker 4: is just talk about me like I'm not the kind
- 4:50Speaker 4: of guy's flashy tweet, Twitter whatever, like or ex whatever
- 4:54Speaker 4: is calling now, Like I'm not a I told somebody
- 4:57Speaker 4: like if you know less about me, I'm doing my
- 4:59Speaker 4: job right, But if you know me, I'm not doing
- 5:02Speaker 4: my job.
- 5:02Speaker 3: And so my.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Background is more college setting. You know, almost a decade
- 5:08Speaker 4: in junior college with the East Mississippi National championship with
- 5:11Speaker 4: Chad Hilly and all those guys at sorry UIL with
- 5:17Speaker 4: Napier's last year there, we won a conference championship with them,
- 5:20Speaker 4: Delta State with Ron Roberts and Pete Golden when he
- 5:22Speaker 4: was a d C at Delta State. You know, a
- 5:25Speaker 4: national championship we lost, and we won a conference championship. Then,
- 5:29Speaker 4: like I've been blessed to kind of be a part
- 5:31Speaker 4: and then obviously our thing under coach Doug and at JAA,
- 5:34Speaker 4: like it was a fun experience to see different ways
- 5:38Speaker 4: and how people interpret it. But at the end of
- 5:40Speaker 4: the day, it's always started with the player led team.
- 5:44Speaker 4: And so here you have these caliber athletes that player
- 5:48Speaker 4: led and they're learning their role. They might not be
- 5:51Speaker 4: as vocal, but their action led base right, and so
- 5:55Speaker 4: that's what's so cool. So you see the lot of buying.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Going back to where we were talking about, like a
- 5:58Speaker 4: lot of guys showing up the summer, pushing themselves even
- 6:01Speaker 4: this spirit like this fall camp, Like, hey, coach, we
- 6:03Speaker 4: hear let's go you know where these guys are gonna
- 6:06Speaker 4: show up where they're not and like it's a different
- 6:07Speaker 4: high school. Like I'm learning this stuff, but it's like
- 6:10Speaker 4: like I don't know that outside noise. I promise you
- 6:13Speaker 4: I don't. I'm off of media, Like I just a
- 6:16Speaker 4: like the reason I'm running up here is we were
- 6:17Speaker 4: just meeting with the defense staff, like going over things. Hey,
- 6:19Speaker 4: how we see this? How we see that? Like are
- 6:21Speaker 4: we on the same page? Are we teaching it the
- 6:23Speaker 4: same way? Are we hearing the same thing? And we
- 6:25Speaker 4: you know, are they hearing the same thing? And it's
- 6:27Speaker 4: just fun like when you have all the sky's the limit,
- 6:31Speaker 4: you know, so.
- 6:32Speaker 1: You know, it's interesting to hear you say, hey, look,
- 6:34Speaker 1: I don't know that outside noise. And I believe you
- 6:36Speaker 1: when you say that. I was reading a story on
- 6:39Speaker 1: one of the Little League baseball team because you know,
- 6:41Speaker 1: a Little League word series is going on right now
- 6:43Speaker 1: or at that tournament is, and one of the schools
- 6:46Speaker 1: or one of the teams rather said that they felt
- 6:48Speaker 1: like their level of success is due to they have
- 6:51Speaker 1: a policy where five hours before every game or every
- 6:55Speaker 1: or before every game, they make their kids put put
- 6:58Speaker 1: theirself on some backs like they're back, like you can't
- 7:00Speaker 1: touch them. We don't want the outside of appearance. How
- 7:03Speaker 1: important is that to teach your young men that too,
- 7:06Speaker 1: because we know this young people. You know, we were
- 7:10Speaker 1: talking to Jacob Vinstra earlier and he was talking about
- 7:12Speaker 1: AI and how they're trying to teach kids in school
- 7:15Speaker 1: that hey, you know, it's it's a tool. It's not
- 7:17Speaker 1: a friend, it's not a social platform, but just to
- 7:20Speaker 1: get guys to buy in and then push out all
- 7:23Speaker 1: the stuff that's out there.
- 7:25Speaker 4: It's funny you brought that up because most recent guy
- 7:27Speaker 4: was TJ White that I had on my defense over
- 7:29Speaker 4: at JAA and and talking with him, like he was
- 7:33Speaker 4: all about the social media, and it was the old
- 7:37Speaker 4: saying you live by the sword, you die by the sword,
- 7:39Speaker 4: you know, And I.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Was like, man, you can't. You can't let the.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Outside noise motivate you because that same energy can also
- 7:45Speaker 4: flip on you. Talking about earlier, like the change is
- 7:48Speaker 4: like a roller coaster ride, right, and so like if
- 7:51Speaker 4: you let that build you up, you are also going
- 7:54Speaker 4: to let that tear you down. And where I'm trying
- 7:57Speaker 4: to teach these guys. It's like who cares? Yeah, me,
- 8:00Speaker 4: who cares? If they don't think I can coach? What
- 8:02Speaker 4: who cares? Like just the coach Clinton and I were
- 8:05Speaker 4: just having this conversation then a very high percentage, I'll
- 8:09Speaker 4: just make it up.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Ninety nine percent of the time.
- 8:11Speaker 4: People were fighting with their own self conscious and their
- 8:13Speaker 4: own thoughts and their own voices in their head when
- 8:15Speaker 4: nobody else could care less, like, Okay, you messed up,
- 8:18Speaker 4: keep moving, like, don't dwell on it, like I teach
- 8:20Speaker 4: these guys, just don't let life speak louder in truth? Right,
- 8:23Speaker 4: y'all were made wonderfully and perfect right obviously in the
- 8:26Speaker 4: in the image of God. But like like guys, y'all
- 8:30Speaker 4: have a platform. Y'all have a purpose. God has blessed
- 8:32Speaker 4: y'all with this ability. And you're at a great institution,
- 8:35Speaker 4: a great community. Go have fun, like in the means right,
- 8:39Speaker 4: doing the right way, but like go fly around, go
- 8:42Speaker 4: do your job. Little things matter, right, they've snowball and
- 8:45Speaker 4: the bigger things, So we can master the small things.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Everything else is going to handle in the big times
- 8:49Speaker 4: when the big moments come up, right, And so that's
- 8:51Speaker 4: what you're trying to teach these guys to say, believe
- 8:54Speaker 4: in yourself. That's the one thing when on conversation with
- 8:56Speaker 4: Coach Clinton before the hire, like we kept calling and
- 8:59Speaker 4: talking to since I've been in high school, even at JAA, Like,
- 9:02Speaker 4: I found myself teaching young men to believe in themselves
- 9:05Speaker 4: rather than anything else. And it's cool to see these
- 9:09Speaker 4: guys believe and say, hey, man, like, Okay, I messed up,
- 9:11Speaker 4: but I can live the fight another day. Like let's
- 9:14Speaker 4: keep moving forward, right, Because I'm a firm believer. I'd
- 9:19Speaker 4: rather see you mess up and let's.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Learn from it.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Then you do a perfection and be like, oh, I
- 9:23Speaker 4: ain't got nothing to learn because you can't learn from
- 9:25Speaker 4: me in perfect You.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Know, it's interesting because that's one of the shifts that
- 9:29Speaker 1: I've seen here and even just today visiting with you
- 9:31Speaker 1: and Coach Clinton and Coach Hunter is you know, we
- 9:35Speaker 1: can talk schematics, we can put something on a board
- 9:37Speaker 1: that looks real good. You know, we can go three
- 9:40Speaker 1: wide on one side and go two back. Whatever you
- 9:41Speaker 1: want to drive defensively, you can twist and flip and
- 9:44Speaker 1: moved a lot. Today has been about this culture and
- 9:49Speaker 1: it's you can feel it's in unison, like you guys
- 9:51Speaker 1: aren't just saying it. This is what you're walking. And
- 9:54Speaker 1: we were talking about Chris Jones over at Hines, who
- 9:56Speaker 1: we do. I do Hines weekly with them on our
- 9:58Speaker 1: radio station, and coach this is a big, big culture
- 10:01Speaker 1: guy and he will not talk to you a whole
- 10:03Speaker 1: lot about scheme, and he will I talk to you
- 10:05Speaker 1: a whole lot about It's like, hey man, look, it's
- 10:08Speaker 1: way more than just what we do on a on
- 10:10Speaker 1: a ball game night, Like I need to see what
- 10:13Speaker 1: we're doing in the mornings, in the afternoons in the day,
- 10:15Speaker 1: and I feel like that's where you guys are here.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, and I didn't really answer your question
- 10:20Speaker 4: on what's the scheme the coach turner like I mean
- 10:23Speaker 4: point and taken right.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Yeah, but like at the end of the day, like.
- 10:25Speaker 4: It's football man, Like I learned from going back to
- 10:28Speaker 4: what I was saying earlier, like NFL guys, like I
- 10:30Speaker 4: watched what's his name, Uh, shoot, he's the DC right now,
- 10:34Speaker 4: you will, like I was this contact he got in
- 10:36Speaker 4: and and from what I heard, he was like he
- 10:39Speaker 4: was like go basic, you know, like just play simple
- 10:42Speaker 4: football alignment and simuth keys is the number is the
- 10:45Speaker 4: name of the game on defense, right, And so if
- 10:47Speaker 4: we are mastering that, we're mastering over half of what
- 10:50Speaker 4: defenses and need to know right in order to play football,
- 10:53Speaker 4: Like if you line up, you got a chance, right,
- 10:56Speaker 4: And so here schematically and learning all the schemes and stuff. Yeah,
- 11:00Speaker 4: what coach Hunter does. I'm a big fan of it.
- 11:02Speaker 4: I'm hoping what we do is going to be something
- 11:04Speaker 4: that's like a monkey wrench thrown into it. I've talked
- 11:06Speaker 4: to coach Davis multiple times over at m RA. You know,
- 11:09Speaker 4: he's on the defense now. He's been calling me up like, Hey,
- 11:12Speaker 4: what's your thoughts on this? And I'm telling my thoughts
- 11:15Speaker 4: and uh, you know, and it's just like just talking ball,
- 11:18Speaker 4: Like I got no problem talking ball. But my philosophy
- 11:21Speaker 4: of with that is, you know everybody's Coach Dugan used
- 11:23Speaker 4: to get messed with me about man, you you will
- 11:27Speaker 4: you give things away rather than you're supposed to want
- 11:29Speaker 4: to be a receiver, not a giver. And I was like, well,
- 11:33Speaker 4: the way I look at it is it's like, at
- 11:34Speaker 4: the end of the day, I can have my mom's
- 11:36Speaker 4: recipe or my grandmother's recipe on making this one dish
- 11:40Speaker 4: one thousand percent. I'm not going to get it right,
- 11:42Speaker 4: so I can give you all this, But if you
- 11:43Speaker 4: don't know the rhyme, the rhyming, reason, the wine, when
- 11:46Speaker 4: what to do and why to do it, and why
- 11:47Speaker 4: you're doing it, then I mean, good luck. It's like
- 11:50Speaker 4: throwing stuff on the wall and hoping it sticks, and
- 11:52Speaker 4: it's going to match the same way like Nick Saban
- 11:54Speaker 4: you can do his defense and his philosophy, like Kirby's
- 11:57Speaker 4: not doing the same thing as Nick. I mean, you
- 11:59Speaker 4: heard Pete go old and say the same thing when
- 12:00Speaker 4: he's DC. He tell you what he wanted, but then
- 12:02Speaker 4: what he liked and what coach you know Saban liked
- 12:05Speaker 4: and what he didn't like. You know, but at the
- 12:07Speaker 4: end of the day, like you got to know the
- 12:08Speaker 4: rhyme and reason, and you only learn that from culture,
- 12:12Speaker 4: right right, being in the fox hole, if you will,
- 12:15Speaker 4: like understanding the rhyme and reason and what you saw
- 12:17Speaker 4: and oh this makes sense because of this and this
- 12:19Speaker 4: and this right, So anyway, we've all been there, We've
- 12:22Speaker 4: had our past and and our and and it all
- 12:24Speaker 4: united us to this point of being at Brandon High School,
- 12:27Speaker 4: you know.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Before we get you on your way, here a vision
- 12:29Speaker 1: with coach Turner defensive coordinator here band high School. Lets
- 12:31Speaker 1: ask you about one player, Trevion Washington. How good can
- 12:34Speaker 1: he be?
- 12:35Speaker 3: He's good? Uh yeah, he's he's he can do his thing.
- 12:41Speaker 4: His is going to be the mental aspect, you know,
- 12:45Speaker 4: forgetting moving on, Like he is a he's that guy.
- 12:48Speaker 3: And we were watching the play a while ago.
- 12:49Speaker 4: It's like, well, technically he's supposed to do this, but
- 12:53Speaker 4: he did this, and he's just an athlete, is always
- 12:57Speaker 4: gonna be an athlete, right, So yeah, it's like dang,
- 13:00Speaker 4: if you didn't, dang, if you did a type deal
- 13:01Speaker 4: like small things, right, you go on or to block,
- 13:04Speaker 4: you better make the play. If you don't, you're gonna
- 13:06Speaker 4: get chewed out, right, And so it's just he is gifted.
- 13:10Speaker 4: He really is. Like his closing speed is I haven't
- 13:15Speaker 4: seen I mean J T or TJ. White had some
- 13:19Speaker 4: closing speed, but yeah, this he's got some closing speed.
- 13:23Speaker 3: You know.
- 13:23Speaker 4: We want to comment about that just when it comes
- 13:25Speaker 4: to tackle, like he's like in there quick. We've got
- 13:29Speaker 4: some things for him that we're gonna kind of allow
- 13:32Speaker 4: the offense to have to figure out what they want
- 13:35Speaker 4: to do with that. So but at the end of
- 13:37Speaker 4: the day, that's all it is. On offensive defense, you
- 13:40Speaker 4: just put your athletes in position what they can do,
- 13:42Speaker 4: and you just let them go play ball, like, don't
- 13:44Speaker 4: overcomplicate it.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Well, look, we appreciate you jumping in. I'm sorry you
- 13:47Speaker 3: had to run and do all that. So all good,
- 13:49Speaker 3: all good.
- 13:49Speaker 4: I'm just ready for next week when we face off
- 13:52Speaker 4: with Warren Central.
- 13:54Speaker 1: So it'll be fun. Coach Michael Turner, he's the defensive
- 13:57Speaker 1: coordinator here at Brandon. One more segment to go. Daniel
- 13:59Speaker 1: Bes should be joined to said baseball coach back in
- 14:01Speaker 1: a minute.
