- 0:36Welcome to Faith Is.
- 0:37I'm Pastor Rick Stevens.
- 0:39So pleased for you to join us this
- 0:41week on Faith Is.
- 0:43This is the place, probably the only place
- 0:46that you will hear that faith is absolute
- 0:49confidence in the trustworthiness of God.
- 0:52And we got a few things to talk
- 0:53about today.
- 0:54And as you know, I've been trying to
- 0:56encourage us, prod us, challenge us, stretch us,
- 0:59maybe all those things and more to make
- 1:01sure we think about the things that we
- 1:04see going on around in the world through
- 1:06a Christian lens.
- 1:09Now I realize that you might disagree with
- 1:12some of my perspectives through a Christian lens,
- 1:15that's fine, but make sure if you do,
- 1:18do it through the lens of the Bible.
- 1:21Just make sure you understand that it's Christians
- 1:23can differ on things, but we want to
- 1:25make sure we think about things through the
- 1:27lens of the Bible.
- 1:29So we think Christianly about things.
- 1:32I'm not here to require you to think
- 1:34like I do or to have the same
- 1:36opinions, but I am here to challenge and
- 1:39stretch, encourage, prod, cajole, whatever you want to
- 1:41think of it.
- 1:44I want us to take seriously our responsibilities
- 1:46to engage the world around us from a
- 1:49Christian perspective.
- 1:52And so we want to talk about a
- 1:53few things.
- 1:54There are some things in the news relative
- 1:56to life-wise and free speech that I saw.
- 1:59And I think we need to revisit that
- 2:01a little bit to make sure we understand
- 2:03what it involves and how significant that it
- 2:05is.
- 2:14And I want to talk about that a
- 2:16little bit and encourage you to go find
- 2:17that article.
- 2:18But I want to start with this is
- 2:22the weekend on Sunday, May 17th, that our
- 2:26nation pauses to rededicate itself as one nation
- 2:29under God.
- 2:34This is no small thing.
- 2:36And I believe we as Christians need to
- 2:40support and participate as best we can in
- 2:44this rededication of our country.
- 2:48The theme of the idea is rededication at
- 2:50the 250th anniversary of the founding of the
- 2:52nation.
- 2:55And the headline on the website, Freedom250.org, that
- 2:59talks about this, says it's a national jubilee
- 3:03of prayer, praise, and thanksgiving.
- 3:08It's going to be an all-day long celebration
- 3:10on Sunday, May 17th, and it's going to
- 3:13feature a lot of different kinds of activities,
- 3:16all taking place on the National Mall in
- 3:18Washington, D.C.
- 3:21Now, you've probably been there, maybe many of
- 3:23you have visited the mall.
- 3:25It is a large area, and this is
- 3:28going to take place approximately in the midpoint
- 3:31between the Lincoln Memorial on one end and
- 3:33the Capitol Building on the other end.
- 3:36You look at the map, you can see
- 3:38that they they advertise that the main stage
- 3:40is going to be at the 12th Street
- 3:42location, so you can kind of tell where
- 3:44that's going to be.
- 3:46And people will be attending from all over.
- 3:49People will be participating as speakers and singers,
- 3:52representing a huge variety of Americans and American
- 3:54perspective.
- 3:57And I think we as the church should
- 3:59be supportive of this.
- 4:36Now, some people are going to make something
- 4:38of this that it's not.
- 5:22We won't be at our church.
- 5:24But we are going to at least make
- 5:26the effort to recognize that God has given
- 5:29us something special here, and it's based upon
- 5:31the Bible.
- 5:34Our understanding of law and government comes out
- 5:36of the pages of the Bible, and we
- 5:39need to give thanks for that.
- 5:41And I hope you will in your way.
- 6:50Let's gather together, gather around, and let's thank
- 6:53God for what He's given us.
- 6:56And let's rededicate ourselves to being one nation
- 6:59under God.
- 7:00One nation under God.
- 7:02I don't think I can quote him exactly,
- 7:02I don't think I can quote him exactly,
- 7:05but you may remember that it was President
- 7:05but you may remember that it was President
- 7:07Ronald Reagan who said something like this: that
- 7:07Ronald Reagan who said something like this that
- 7:09if we're not a one nation under God,
- 7:09if we're not a one nation under God,
- 7:12we're going to be a nation gone under.
- 7:12we're going to be a nation gone under.
- 7:14And I think that's exactly right.
- 7:14And I think that's exactly right.
- 7:16And we need to have a moral awakening
- 7:16And we need to have a moral awakening
- 7:19in this country.
- 7:19in this country.
- 7:22One of the things that's often said about
- 7:22One of the things that's often said about
- 7:24the country is we get demoralized.
- 7:24the country is we get demoralized.
- 7:26Well, if you're demoralized, that means you don't
- 7:26Well, if you're demoralized, that means you don't
- 7:28have a moral moral compass.
- 7:28have a moral moral compass to guide you.
- 7:31And so we need to re-establish that and
- 7:34together look to God as our moral compass
- 7:37so that we can be the people that
- 7:39we can that we aspire to be based
- 7:42on the ideals of our founding.
- 7:45So this is a great weekend.
- 7:47I think it's absolutely terrific, and I urge
- 7:50you to support it.
- 7:53Now, along the line of government and the
- 7:55fact that we have such a great nation
- 7:58to be thankful for.
- 8:48They agree to do this, and so during
- 8:52the school day, usually once a week, the
- 8:55students leave the school with the permission of
- 8:58their parents and under the supervision of Lifewise
- 9:01personnel from Lifewise Academy.
- 9:05They leave school, and sometimes they ride a
- 9:06bus.
- 9:08The one I recently visited, the students just
- 9:11walk across the street to a church, and
- 9:14they have about an hour of religious instruction.
- 9:17They read the Bible, they talk about it,
- 9:19they have adults that lead them through it
- 9:21that teach the lessons, and they even have
- 9:22a snack.
- 9:24What can you do with kids and not
- 9:25have a snack, huh?
- 9:27So it's a simple process, it's a simple
- 9:29idea.
- 9:31It doesn't cost the school district anything.
- 9:34It provides an enrichment for these students to
- 9:38actually encounter the Bible, and they love it.
- 9:42And the people that work with them love
- 9:43it.
- 9:44Well, uh, all is well and good except
- 9:47apparently in Washington state.
- 9:50Let me just read a little bit of
- 9:52this article that I found on Fox News
- 9:54website.
- 9:56A federal judge has partially granted a preliminary
- 9:59injunction against Everett Public Schools in a lawsuit
- 10:03accusing the Washington School District of discriminating against
- 10:07LifeWise Academy, a national nonprofit that provides off-campus
- 10:10religious instruction to public school students.
- 10:14In an order issued April 4th in the
- 10:15U.S.
- 10:17District Court for the Western District of Washington,
- 10:18U.S.
- 10:20District Judge Lauren King said that LifeWise and
- 10:23co-plaintiff Sarah Sweeney, a parent and lifewise staff
- 10:26member, were likely to succeed on key First
- 10:30Amendment claims, challenging the district's restrictions on the
- 10:33group.
- 10:36Well, the district had put in some restrictions
- 10:39on LifeWise and their function.
- 10:42They wouldn't allow them have a to have
- 10:44a booth at a community resource fair, for
- 10:46example.
- 10:48They were trying to restrict them when it
- 10:50came to printed flyers where other organizations might
- 10:52print flyers.
- 10:55They didn't want lifewise to have the opportunity
- 10:57to distribute their flyers.
- 11:08They wanted to make them have a, if
- 11:10I remember correctly, that detail, a permission slip
- 11:11every week.
- 11:13And the court says, no, while this is
- 11:15going forward, they need to have semester-long permission
- 11:17slips.
- 11:19Well, those are the kinds of things that
- 11:21are designed to inhibit the rights of these
- 11:23students.
- 11:26Now, you may be wondering, is this separation
- 11:28of church and state?
- 11:30Well, yes, it's complete separation.
- 11:32And by the way, the separation of church
- 11:34and state is a completely misunderstood and scrambled
- 11:37idea.
- 11:39You need to look into that if you
- 11:42have not and try to understand it.
- 11:45I believe if you look into it, you
- 11:47will understand it better than the court did
- 11:49when they made their comments about it many
- 11:50years ago.
- 11:52But this is clearly not a violation of
- 11:55separation of church and state because Lifewise Academy
- 11:58meets off campus.
- 12:02It's fully funded by private donations, and it's
- 12:05done with the permission of the parents.
- 12:09So it's completely completely not a violation of
- 12:12the separation of church and state.
- 12:15What seems to have happened is that someone
- 12:19didn't like what LifeWise is was doing.
- 12:22And in fact, that was clearly recognized in
- 12:26the arguments before the court because a board
- 12:29member in the school system out there in
- 12:32Washington said he held animus toward the group.
- 12:36He made it clear he did not even
- 12:39try to hide that he had a personal
- 12:41beef with them.
- 12:43He didn't like what he thought were some
- 12:45of their activities.
- 12:48They clearly are not involved in the things
- 12:50that he said, but he had a uh
- 12:53a clearly personal vendetta against them, and so
- 12:55they were trying to stop LifeWise and deprive
- 12:58these children of the opportunity to hear what
- 13:00God says.
- 13:03And this is clearly a violation.
- 13:05I have a lot of certainty that this
- 13:09case will be resolved completely in LifeWise's favor.
- 13:14In a similar situation in Georgia, at Vidalia
- 13:18High School, some students took courses at Sweet
- 13:21Onion Christian Learning Center.
- 13:25I love that name, Sweet Onion Christian Learning
- 13:28Center, and they're we're having a conflict over
- 13:31some things that were going on, and then
- 13:34it turns out that the founder of the
- 13:37learning center, Reverend Humans criticize the school board
- 13:40because they wanted to raise taxes, and he
- 13:43didn't like that.
- 13:46So in retaliation, as it turns out, these
- 13:49school board or these school officials were pulling
- 13:53the plug on this learning at the Sweet
- 13:56Onion Christian Learning Center.
- 13:59Well, the results in a lawsuit that will
- 14:00That results in a lawsuit that will almost
- 14:02almost certainly be resolved in favor of the
- 14:03certainly be resolved in favor of the Christian
- 14:05Christian learning center.
- 14:05learning center.
- 14:08And here's what the legal counsel for them
- 14:08And here's what the legal counsel for them
- 14:10said.
- 14:10said.
- 14:12Every American has the right to publicly criticize
- 14:12Every American has the right to publicly criticize
- 14:14the government.
- 14:14the government.
- 14:16That's what makes the First Amendment guarantee of
- 14:16That's what makes the First Amendment guarantee of
- 14:19free speech so special, and the envy of
- 14:19free speech so special and the envy of
- 14:21the world.
- 14:21the world.
- 14:24He continued, Vidalia city schools can't punish Reverend
- 14:24He continued Vidalia City Schools can't punish Reverend
- 14:27Humans.
- 14:28Humans or his ministry, providing high school students
- 14:32with free religious education for simply sharing his
- 14:36opinion of a proposed tax hike.
- 14:40We are urging the court to reinstate Sweet
- 14:43Onion's release time and restore Reverend Newman's constitutional
- 14:46freedoms.
- 14:49Well, it's the same idea as life wise.
- 14:52Students have the opportunity to leave school to
- 14:54have religious education.
- 14:57In this case, the pastor, the founder of
- 15:00the Christian center, didn't like a tax hike
- 15:03and spoke out against it, and the school
- 15:06retaliated against him by shutting down this release
- 15:10time religious education.
- 15:13You can't do that.
- 15:15And the thing that you and I have
- 15:18to realize is that the United States has
- 15:21established freedoms and our rights come from God.
- 15:25And it's entirely appropriate and entirely necessary to
- 15:29push back when government officials violate that freedom.
- 15:34And so that's what's happened in the Everett
- 15:37School District out in Washington, and in this
- 15:41case in Georgia, that the people that have
- 15:44been harmed by inappropriate, illegal, unconstitutional government actions
- 15:48are pushing back against that.
- 15:51Now, every now and then I pick up
- 15:53on the idea that some Christians don't like
- 15:55the idea that we have to fight for
- 15:58what God has given us.
- 16:00I understand that.
- 16:01Churches, Christians are good hearted people.
- 16:04We don't usually want to have to fight
- 16:07about things, or in the words of some
- 16:09cause trouble.
- 16:11Well, you gotta understand in these situations the
- 16:13Christians didn't cause the trouble.
- 16:16It was the government that overstepped its limitations
- 16:18and caused the trouble.
- 16:21And therein is a major misunderstanding.
- 16:24And we need to understand that our laws,
- 16:28our constitution that guarantees religious liberty and guarantees
- 16:31freedom of speech, are limitations on the government,
- 16:35not limitations on us.
- 16:39That's very important.
- 16:40People have lost track of that, I think.
- 16:43We've gotten the idea that the government can
- 16:44do what it wants, and we just have
- 16:46to cooperate.
- 16:47That is absolutely not what our nation was
- 16:49founded on.
- 16:52And we need to make sure government lives
- 16:54within its boundaries and doesn't step over the
- 16:56line.
- 16:59Many people think that Christians are becoming too
- 17:01political these days.
- 17:04I don't think that's it at all.
- 17:05I think what happened is the government has
- 17:08overstepped its authority and gotten into theological issues
- 17:11and tried to push us around, and we're
- 17:14not going to be pushed because God has
- 17:17given us this liberty, God has given us
- 17:20these instructions, and we're going to follow him.
- 17:23So I think both those cases are going
- 17:25to be easily won by the people involved,
- 17:27and I think it's a great thing that
- 17:29they're pushing back.
- 17:31We must do that.
- 17:34Now I'm sorry to have to draw your
- 17:36attention to this other story.
- 17:38Sorry on one level because it's absolutely horrible.
- 17:42And I want to caution you that if
- 17:44you go read this, which I think you
- 17:46should, you're going to have to be prepared
- 17:49because it's it's brutal.
- 17:51The information is just awful.
- 17:55There's an article posted on CNN.com that talks
- 17:59about a report of systematic rape and sexual
- 18:03violence during Hamas' attack on October 7th on
- 18:06Israel.
- 18:11It is how should I say it is
- 18:13plain spoken and it tells you what's in
- 18:16the report.
- 18:19It does not sugarcoat it, but it does
- 18:22not try to make it sensationalized either.
- 18:27But sometimes you and I, who are good
- 18:31hearted people, have trouble facing up to dealing
- 18:35with sometimes I think Christians even have trouble
- 18:40acknowledging how evil some uh actions, events are
- 18:44clearly this documents without a without a doubt,
- 18:49this report that they re that they're talking
- 18:53about here in this article on CNN.com.
- 18:58They document without a doubt the horrific things
- 19:02that were done to these young men and
- 19:05women at the music festival at that site
- 19:09in southern Israel on October 7th of 2023.
- 19:15There's a link in the CNN article to
- 19:16the actual report.
- 19:18I would encourage you to go there and
- 19:20check it out.
- 19:22I looked at that report a little bit.
- 19:25Frankly, I just could not bring myself to
- 19:28read it at this point after reading the
- 19:31CNN article and realizing what these young people
- 19:34were put through, the absolute uh sadistic torture
- 19:38that they endured the pain, and then to
- 19:41be summarily killed.
- 19:44It's just it's it's almost beyond comprehension.
- 19:47And I know people just don't want to
- 19:49face up to this, and I know there's
- 19:51been a lot of talk about what's true
- 19:53and what's false.
- 19:56This particular report that CNN talks about has
- 20:00been well established with absolutely irrefutable evidence, and
- 20:04we now know in great detail what happened
- 20:08on October 7th.
- 20:12And you and I have to come to
- 20:15grips with black-hearted people, because we see evidence
- 20:18of absolute evil here.
- 20:22Now, I didn't get exposed to the worst
- 20:24of things when I visited Israel back in
- 20:27December.
- 20:29We did visit the site of the music
- 20:31festival.
- 20:33We walked those grounds and we saw the
- 20:36pictures of the students that were killed, the
- 20:38young men and women, not all of them
- 20:40students, but the young men and women.
- 20:42Well, we heard the story of one young
- 20:44man and what happened.
- 20:46He was there and he survived.
- 20:47We later heard the story of a father
- 20:50and his young daughter whose village was attacked,
- 20:53and how they managed to survive.
- 20:57Absolutely horrific things.
- 20:58We visited a kibbutz.
- 21:00We stood in the in the driveway, I
- 21:00We stood in the in the driveway, I
- 21:03guess you'd say, of that kibbutz, and listened
- 21:03guess you'd say, of that kibbutz and listened
- 21:05to the woman that was that was welcoming
- 21:05to the woman that was that was welcoming
- 21:08us there, tell the story of what happened
- 21:08us there, tell the story of what happened
- 21:10on that awful day of October 7th.
- 21:11on that awful day of October 7th.
- 21:13And as we were standing there, I could
- 21:13And as we were standing there, I could
- 21:16look across, and it wasn't very far to
- 21:16look across, and it wasn't very far to
- 21:19the fence that separated Israel from Gaza.
- 21:19the fence that separated Israel from Gaza.
- 21:23Large chain-link fence, tall chain link fence.
- 21:23Large chain link fence, tall chain link fence.
- 21:27And then farther in the distance, I could
- 21:27And then farther in the distance, I could
- 21:28see a city.
- 21:29see a city in Gaza.
- 21:32This was real stuff that happened, and they
- 21:34told us the stories of what happened there
- 21:35on that kibbutz.
- 21:37The stories of both heroism and horror that
- 21:40took place that day.
- 21:43People were killed.
- 21:46Families were badly separated.
- 21:50In one case, one young man was the
- 21:53only survivor, one young teenager from his family.
- 21:56Because he was out for a run, and
- 21:58he took shelter in a place that was
- 22:01spared, but his whole family back at home
- 22:03was killed.
- 22:05I mean, these are just unbelievable actions that
- 22:08took place on that day.
- 22:11And that's why I think it's important for
- 22:14us to read these accounts.
- 22:16Now, if you may not have the stomach
- 22:18to read the full report, I expect I
- 22:19will go back and read it at some
- 22:21point.
- 22:23I think I need to just to to
- 22:25make sure that I understand fully the situation.
- 22:28I don't want to.
- 22:29I can tell you that for sure.
- 22:31I'd absolutely resist it.
- 22:32Everything in me says I don't want to
- 22:34read it, but some things you just have
- 22:36to do to know what's going on, what
- 22:37went on.
- 22:39And I want to encourage you to at
- 22:41least read the CNN article today.
- 22:43So many people are saying Israel is the
- 22:44aggressor here.
- 22:46Israel is treating these people badly.
- 22:49You read this article, and you understand what
- 22:52was done to young Israeli men and women,
- 22:54and you will understand why Israel took action,
- 22:57military action against Hamas.
- 23:01Hamas is not a benign bunch.
- 23:03They are not simply another group that that
- 23:07was elected to office in Gaza.
- 23:11They are a terrorist organization bent on destruction,
- 23:15and we need to understand what's going on.
- 23:19Let me give you an example about how
- 23:21you need to believe certain people and don't
- 23:23believe others.
- 23:25Whenever you hear about somebody speaking from Gaza,
- 23:28maybe they're a journalist, maybe they're some kind
- 23:31of public official, and they're making a statement,
- 23:34and you would expect that they would tell
- 23:37you the truth.
- 23:40But you need to understand if they're a
- 23:43public official of any kind in Gaza of
- 23:46journalists, anything like that, anybody speaking about what
- 23:49happened in Gaza, they are a mouthpiece of
- 23:52Hamas, and they are telling you what Hamas
- 23:55wants you to hear, and they're absolutely comfortable
- 23:58lying because they believe that to advance Islam
- 24:01and to lie are perfectly acceptable.
- 24:05Anything is acceptable to advance Islam.
- 24:09And you and I in the West need
- 24:10to understand this.
- 24:12Some of us are old enough to remember
- 24:14the old Soviet Union, and we knew when
- 24:16we heard propaganda coming out of the old
- 24:18Soviet Union not to believe it.
- 24:21Well, we need to be just as aware
- 24:23of what comes out of places like Gaza
- 24:25and understand that they are not telling us
- 24:27the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but
- 24:29the truth.
- 24:32They are telling us what they want us
- 24:33to believe.
- 24:35And we need to push back against that
- 24:38and make sure anything you believe about what's
- 24:41going on over there is verified.
- 24:44That's why this report matters so much, because
- 24:47it demonstrates the absolute savagery of that attack.
- 24:51And we, the people of God, need to
- 24:54recognize evil and call it what it is,
- 24:56and pray like a house of fire, as
- 24:59my friend used to say, that God would
- 25:02deliver us from evil.
- 25:05That's inherent in the prayer Jesus taught us,
- 25:08deliver us from evil, and we need that
- 25:10deliverance today.
- 25:13So think about the world through Christian eyes,
- 25:16and don't be deceived.
- 25:19Even when it seems unbelievable, like this report,
- 25:21we as Christians need to face evil and
- 25:24recognize that evil was defeated at the cross,
- 25:26and we are going to be faithful to
- 25:29the one who is the way, the truth,
- 25:31and the life.

- 31:36Welcome back to Faith Is.
- 31:38I'm Pastor Rick Stevens, and this is the
- 31:40place where we stretch toward God.
- 31:43We accept his challenge to stretch in his
- 31:45direction.
- 31:47We pay attention to the truth.
- 31:49We apply it to our lives, and we
- 31:52celebrate that God is with us.
- 31:55So remember, faith is absolute confidence in the
- 31:58trustworthiness of God.
- 32:00And that definition really wraps up a lot
- 32:03of what we mean by having faith in
- 32:05God.
- 32:07Is it everything?
- 32:08I wouldn't defend it as everything.
- 32:10Is it something?
- 32:10Yes, it is.
- 32:11Is it helpful?
- 32:12Well, it helps me.
- 32:13I hope it helps you.
- 32:14Well, last week we talked about some things
- 32:16from John chapter 14, and I want to
- 32:18revisit that.
- 32:20Perhaps go over some of the things we
- 32:23touched on last week, but then go into
- 32:25some other things as well.
- 32:27And maybe we should start by reading a
- 32:29portion from John chapter 14.
- 32:32I'm not going to read the whole chapter.
- 32:33We read the first few verses last week.
- 32:36John 14, starting with verse 1.
- 32:38And I want to start with verse 18
- 32:41this time and read a few words.
- 32:44Now these are these are Jesus' words.
- 32:46It's a statement he's making.
- 32:51It's preparation for them for his coming crucifixion,
- 32:55the death, burial, and resurrection.
- 33:00And in a sense, it's also pointing toward
- 33:02the time that he would leave and go
- 33:04back to be with the father.
- 33:07So it's preparation for these things, but it
- 33:09gives us some really important hooks to hang
- 33:12our lives on and some important things for
- 33:14us to think about.
- 33:17So let's read this and then let's talk
- 33:18about a few of the things.
- 33:20We can't cover everything that's in here, but
- 33:22I want to pick up and read a
- 33:24little bit from John chapter 14, beginning with
- 33:27verse 18 from the Christian Standard Bible.
- 33:29Jesus words.
- 33:34In a little while, the world will no
- 33:37longer see me, but you will see me
- 33:39because I live, you will live too.
- 33:42On that day you will know that I
- 33:43am in my father, you are in me,
- 33:45and I am in you.
- 33:47The one who has my commands and keeps
- 33:49them is the one who loves me.
- 33:51And the one who loves me will be
- 33:53loved by my father.
- 33:55I also will love him and will reveal
- 33:57myself to him.
- 33:59Judas, not a scariot, said to him, Lord,
- 34:02how is it you're going to reveal yourself
- 34:04to us and not to the world?
- 34:07Jesus answered.
- 34:24I've spoken these things to you while I
- 34:27remain with you, but the counselor, the Holy
- 34:30Spirit, whom the Father will send in my
- 34:32name, will teach you all things and remind
- 34:35you of everything I have told you.
- 34:37So you get a little flavor of what
- 34:40Jesus is saying and how he's preparing his
- 34:43followers for his death, burial, and resurrection, and
- 34:46then for his return to heaven, where he
- 34:48will rule and reign with the Father.
- 34:52So one of the important things is that
- 34:56Jesus says that he's essentially going home.
- 34:59And earlier in the chapter, he talked about
- 35:00And earlier in the chapter, he talked about
- 35:02how he was gonna make a place for
- 35:02how he was going to make a place
- 35:05us to go home with him.
- 35:05for us to go home with him.
- 35:08Well, I was thinking about home and going
- 35:08Well, I was thinking about home and going
- 35:09home.
- 35:09home.
- 35:11And home has a special place in a
- 35:11And home has a special place in a
- 35:13lot of people's hearts.
- 35:13lot of people's hearts.
- 35:15I lived in Owensboro, Kentucky when I was
- 35:15I lived in Owensboro, Kentucky, and when I
- 35:17going to high school.
- 35:17was going to high school.
- 35:19And I don't remember if I ever talked
- 35:19And I don't remember if I ever talked
- 35:20to anybody about this, but I heard about
- 35:20to anybody about this, but I heard about
- 35:21it.
- 35:21it.
- 35:23That there were people that had lived in
- 35:23That there were people that had lived in
- 35:25that county all their lives, and they never
- 35:25that county all their lives, and they never
- 35:27went any place else and had no desire
- 35:27went any place else and had no.
- 35:29to go any place.
- 35:31That was home.
- 35:32They were going to stay there.
- 35:34Well, that's all well and good, but Jesus
- 35:36didn't talk about a home where we are
- 35:38now where we'll stay.
- 35:41He's talking about a home he's preparing for
- 35:42us.
- 35:44So I was thinking about home a little
- 35:45bit, and I live in Southwest Florida, Cape
- 35:47Coral, where I'm the pastor of a diplomat
- 35:49Wesleyan Church.
- 35:52And in Southwest Florida, and I'm not an
- 35:54expert on Southwest Florida.
- 35:57I've only lived here almost 30 years now.
- 35:59People have lived here a lot longer than
- 36:00I have.
- 36:01But I have noticed that a lot of
- 36:03us aren't from around here.
- 36:05So when you meet somebody new, one of
- 36:07the first things that you say is, Well,
- 36:09where are you from?
- 36:11And we're all from almost always someplace up
- 36:14north, the way we say it.
- 36:17Well, sometimes people will ask me, Well, where's
- 36:18home?
- 36:21And through no fault of anyone's, no fault
- 36:23of mine, or it just kind of seems
- 36:24that way.
- 36:26I don't know how to answer that question.
- 36:29I know that I lived in two places
- 36:30that I can remember.
- 36:32I lived in a couple more, I think,
- 36:34but I was a baby at that point.
- 36:36I know two residences, I and I know
- 36:37where those are.
- 36:39One is in Owensboro, Kentucky, and one is
- 36:41in Milford, Ohio.
- 36:43And I know where those are.
- 36:45I was thinking about home, and I was
- 36:47thinking, how do I answer that question the
- 36:48next time somebody asked me about it?
- 36:50And I still don't know.
- 36:52But I do know this.
- 36:54I can find my way back to either
- 36:56of those houses.
- 36:58I wouldn't need a map.
- 37:00I wouldn't need anything.
- 37:01I could just drive there from here.
- 37:03Now I live in Southwest Florida, and it's
- 37:05a few hundred miles to either one of
- 37:07those places, but doesn't matter, I still know
- 37:09the way.
- 37:11I could get there.
- 37:13Now part of that's because I've always paid
- 37:14attention to maps and I'm interested in that
- 37:16sort of thing, so it kind of sticks
- 37:17in my mind.
- 37:19But part of that is I just know
- 37:22because I lived there, and yes, the roads
- 37:24have changed since I lived there, particularly in
- 37:27Ohio, very much change, but still I've been
- 37:29there enough since those days that I could
- 37:32find home.
- 37:34I could get there.
- 37:36Well, Jesus' disciples were concerned when Jesus said,
- 37:38I'm going to prepare a place for you,
- 37:41that how would they know where he was,
- 37:43and how would they know how to find
- 37:45him?
- 37:47And Jesus assures them that if he goes
- 37:51away, he'll come and take us, them and
- 37:54us with him home.
- 37:58Now, what does that mean?
- 38:01Well, first thing we would say is that
- 38:03sounds like the second coming of Jesus, and
- 38:05I think it does.
- 38:07We all talk about how Jesus went to
- 38:09be with the Father, and he will come
- 38:11back one day for all of us.
- 38:14Well, what does that mean?
- 38:15And how do we understand this?
- 38:18Now, I looked at several academic sources, and
- 38:21none of them seem to pick up on
- 38:24this idea that I think explains what Jesus
- 38:27is talking about here very well, with great
- 38:30clarity, and could be easily understand understood by
- 38:33anyone in his audience.
- 38:36I got this idea years ago from a
- 38:39man named Zola Levitt, who was a teacher
- 38:42and who connected the stories of the Bible
- 38:45to the Jewish cultural practices.
- 38:49And as I understand it in those days
- 38:52that when a young man and a young
- 38:54woman wanted to get married, there were certain
- 38:57things that took place to prepare for that.
- 38:59Now, those days were usually arranged marriages between
- 39:02the families, maybe between the fathers.
- 39:05Certainly my understanding is that the other parties
- 39:08were involved, including the prospective bride and the
- 39:11prospective groom.
- 39:14But they would work this out.
- 39:17It wasn't like we do where a young
- 39:19man finds a young woman or a young
- 39:20woman finds a young man, or they find
- 39:22each other.
- 39:24It was a little bit more involved than
- 39:25that.
- 39:26Well, when it seemed to be the time
- 39:29to get the ball rolling on this uh
- 39:32coming wedding, shall we say, the families agreed
- 39:35to a meeting.
- 39:38And so the prospective groom and his parents
- 39:42would arrange a time, and the bride and
- 39:45her parents would host them at her home.
- 39:49And they would go in and they would
- 39:52talk about these things, and they would make
- 39:54known the intentions of this young man to
- 39:57marry this girl.
- 39:59He would like her to agree to that.
- 40:02And she had the opportunity to agree to
- 40:04it.
- 40:05Now, I guess she could have said no,
- 40:07but I think it's pretty certain we can
- 40:09tell that they wouldn't have even gone this
- 40:11far if she wasn't interested.
- 40:13But anyway, they go through the formalities.
- 40:17They agree to a kind of covenant arrangement
- 40:20for what's going to result from this marriage
- 40:23and leading up to it.
- 40:27And they come to the conclusion of the
- 40:29meeting, and the young man says to the
- 40:31girl, I go to prepare a place for
- 40:33you.
- 40:35Now, if you remember in the first part
- 40:38of John chapter 14, Jesus said very similar
- 40:41words.
- 40:44Verse 2, I'm going away to prepare a
- 40:46place for you.
- 40:48If I go away and prepare a place
- 40:50for you, I will come again and take
- 40:52you to myself, so that where I am
- 40:54you may be also.
- 40:56You know the way to where I am
- 40:58going.
- 40:59Well, that was statement was what prompted Thomas
- 41:02to say, Well, we don't know where you're
- 41:05going, and how can we know the way?
- 41:08Well, I think this idea of marriage answers
- 41:11that question.
- 41:14So the young man says to the girl,
- 41:16to the family even, but mostly to the
- 41:18girl, I go to prepare a place for
- 41:20you.
- 41:22They would leave then, he and his parents,
- 41:25and go back to their home where he
- 41:28would prepare a place to bring his bride.
- 41:31Now, it could vary the kind of place,
- 41:34maybe based on the means of the family,
- 41:37the space they had available, but he would
- 41:40prepare a room or maybe add a room
- 41:43to the house, but he would prepare a
- 41:46place to bring his bride.
- 41:49Now, it doesn't take too much imagination, and
- 41:53I don't think it is too out of
- 41:56order to to imagine that a young man
- 42:00having gotten this close to becoming an adult
- 42:00This close to becoming an adult male in
- 42:03male in his world and having a bride.
- 42:03his world and having a bride.
- 42:08He would hurry up and get something put
- 42:08He would hurry up and get something put
- 42:09together as quickly as he could, and by
- 42:09together as quickly as he could, and by
- 42:11the next afternoon he might say to us,
- 42:11the next afternoon he might say to us,
- 42:13I'm ready to go, and his father would
- 42:13I'm ready to go, and his father would
- 42:15say, Not so fast.
- 42:15say, Not so fast.
- 42:17You see, the next piece of that puzzle
- 42:17You see, the next piece of that puzzle
- 42:20was he could not, the young man, the
- 42:20was he could not, the young man, the
- 42:22prospective groom could not go claim his bride
- 42:23prospective groom could not go claim his bride
- 42:24until his father said, Okay, you have the
- 42:26until his father said, Okay, you have the
- 42:27place.
- 42:29place properly prepared.
- 42:32So that required the young man to do
- 42:34his due diligence and make the room what
- 42:37it was supposed to be to satisfy his
- 42:39father.
- 42:42Now you remember Jesus said that his return
- 42:44only the father knew.
- 42:46Well, that's a clue of what of how
- 42:49he was helping people understand this dynamic is
- 42:52the connection to this wedding practice.
- 42:56So the day would come, and no one
- 42:58really knew when it would come because it
- 43:00was up to the father.
- 43:02When the father knew the young man was
- 43:05ready, and maybe if he was a really
- 43:07wise father, he also knew that it involved
- 43:09more than just getting the room ready.
- 43:12He needed to make sure the young man
- 43:13was fully ready.
- 43:15And at the appropriate time, he would give
- 43:18permission for the young man to go claim
- 43:20his bride.
- 43:23And so the young man and his friends
- 43:26would go tearing through the streets over to
- 43:28the girl's house to claim his bride.
- 43:31Now, sometimes this happened late at night.
- 43:34Different ways this happened, but they always made
- 43:36a lot of noise so the girls would
- 43:37know they were coming so they could be
- 43:39ready because it was the bride's responsibility to
- 43:41be ready when the groom arrived.
- 43:44Oh, you remember how Jesus said to us,
- 43:46be ready, because you don't know when I'm
- 43:48going to be back.
- 43:51It's up to the Father.
- 43:52So, okay, so they're ready now.
- 43:54And they go claim the girl.
- 43:56Now the groom then shows the girl and
- 44:00her attendants the way back to home now.
- 44:05So when Jesus says, You know the way,
- 44:08you'll know the way because I'm coming and
- 44:10I will show you the way.
- 44:13So it's not really complicated when you think
- 44:15about it through those terms, and that's how
- 44:17I think it helps us understand what Jesus
- 44:19is talking about.
- 44:22That He is going to come again for
- 44:23us, and He's going to show us the
- 44:25way home.
- 44:27Now, another important theme in this passage, and
- 44:30you picked up on that probably a little
- 44:33bit as I read it, is that this
- 44:36idea that Jesus and the Father are one.
- 44:40And this is important for us to remind
- 44:43ourselves because we live in a time when
- 44:47people have trouble realizing that when we talk
- 44:50about God, and when we talk about God
- 44:53in a Trinitarian sense as Father, Son, and
- 44:57Holy Spirit, people want to separate those three,
- 45:00and forget or overlook or maybe minimize the
- 45:03oneness of the three.
- 45:07You can't separate Father from Son, Son from
- 45:11Father, Father from Spirit, Spirit from Father, Son
- 45:14from Spirit, Spirit from Son.
- 45:17They are a unity, a one.
- 45:21This goes all the way back to the
- 45:24Old Testament that when they prayed the Shema.
- 45:26Here, O Israel, the Lord our God, the
- 45:28Lord is one, and you shall love the
- 45:30Lord your God with all your heart, all
- 45:32your soul, all your mind, and all your
- 45:34strength.
- 45:36So it goes back, the Lord is one.
- 45:41It was the idea of one true God.
- 45:45In a world of many gods, God's people
- 45:48recognized one true God.
- 45:51And what's important for us to remember is
- 45:53in our day is that people sometimes read
- 45:55the Bible and they think they know everything
- 45:57God knows.
- 45:59Now hear what I said there very carefully
- 46:01there.
- 46:02People read the Bible and they think they
- 46:04know everything there is to know about a
- 46:06situation.
- 46:08And so when God tells his people to
- 46:11do something about a certain situation, people think,
- 46:14well, how could God, for example, God commanded
- 46:17his people to kill all of the people
- 46:19in certain areas.
- 46:23That upsets some people these days.
- 46:25I understand that that's kind of unsettling.
- 46:28I agree.
- 46:29But I don't know what God knows, and
- 46:31I don't know what evil those people had
- 46:34been practicing that caused God to say they
- 46:37cannot survive.
- 46:39I do know that God said in Genesis
- 46:43that he was sorry he had made people
- 46:46because of how bad they had become.
- 46:58That's pretty horrific.
- 47:00But I don't know all that God knew.
- 47:02I just know that at that point God
- 47:03said he was sorry he made people because
- 47:05people had gotten so bad.
- 47:07Well, we see evidence in our world, and
- 47:09I talked about that with the the Hamas
- 47:11attack of October 7th of how bad people
- 47:13can be.
- 47:15And so if God says, Something's got to
- 47:17be done about this, like the flood, God
- 47:20knows better than I do, and he knows
- 47:22a lot more than I do.
- 47:24But people today want to reject that God,
- 47:26and they want to look at the New
- 47:29Testament in Jesus and say, Well, I like
- 47:31that, so I'm gonna accept that and not
- 47:33the other.
- 47:35Well, this idea that God is one doesn't
- 47:37give us that option.
- 47:40The God that we see revealed in Jesus
- 47:43is the same God that's revealed in the
- 47:45pages of the Old Testament who took care
- 47:48of business when it came to evil.
- 47:50It's the same God that we read in
- 47:52the pages of Revelation, that one day will
- 47:55judge evil.
- 47:57Now, people get a little nervous about some
- 47:59of those kind of things, but frankly, I
- 48:01think we should be glad that there is
- 48:04a God who will judge evil.
- 48:06Otherwise, evil gets away with it.
- 48:09And I don't want evil to get away
- 48:10with it.
- 48:11I want God to make the wrongs right,
- 48:13and one day he will.
- 48:15So that's another theme of this chapter 14,
- 48:18and really of the whole Bible, but it's
- 48:21specifically mentioned here, and we need to remind
- 48:24ourselves that we think of them as Father,
- 48:27Son, and Holy Spirit, but it's one.
- 48:30They are one.
- 48:35I found this, this is a different place.
- 48:36I didn't read this earlier, but I I
- 48:39found this quite striking, is that Jesus talked
- 48:43about how he would send what's often referred
- 48:46to as another counselor, meaning the Holy Spirit.
- 48:50Let me read you just a little portion
- 48:52from John chapter 14, starting with verse 15.
- 48:55Jesus words again, if you love me, you
- 48:57will keep my commands, and I will ask
- 48:59the Father, and he will give you another
- 49:00He will give you another counselor to be
- 49:01counselor to be with you forever.
- 49:02with you forever.
- 49:04He is the Spirit of Truth.
- 49:04He is the spirit of truth.
- 49:06The world is unable to receive him because
- 49:06The world is unable to receive him because
- 49:08it doesn't see him or know him.
- 49:08it doesn't see him or know him.
- 49:11But you know him because he remains with
- 49:11But you know him because he remains with
- 49:14you and will be in you.
- 49:14you and will be in you.
- 49:16Now it really struck me.
- 49:16Now it really struck me.
- 49:18Um again, some of these things that occur
- 49:18Um again, some of these things that occur
- 49:20to me, I think, man, you really are
- 49:20to me, I think, man, you really are
- 49:21in the slow group if you didn't think
- 49:22in the slow group if you didn't think
- 49:23of that before.
- 49:24of that before, but I didn't.
- 49:24But I didn't.
- 49:26So here we are.
- 49:26So here we are.
- 49:28But he talks about the spirit of truth.
- 49:28But he talks about the spirit of truth
- 49:30as a description of, or a some people
- 49:33would say a name for the Holy Spirit.
- 49:36And he goes on to say, did you
- 49:38catch this?
- 49:40The world is unable to receive him.
- 49:44And I got to thinking all of a
- 49:46sudden, we live in a world that doesn't
- 49:48want the truth.
- 49:50That's trying to make things in the way
- 49:52they want them to be rather than in
- 49:54the to recognize the truth.
- 49:56We see that with the gender confusion.
- 49:59And truth solves all that confusion.
- 50:04You see, we live in a time of
- 50:07real moral confusion.
- 50:09People just want to change what's wrong to
- 50:12what's right and what's right to what's wrong.
- 50:15It's unbelievably confusing.
- 50:19And the gender identity crisis, you could call
- 50:21it.
- 50:23It's maybe improved a little bit, but it's
- 50:25still out there is an example of moral
- 50:27confusion.
- 50:30See, truth is that which corresponds to reality.
- 50:33That's a simple way to think about truth.
- 50:35Truth corresponds to reality.
- 50:37The gender confusion nonsense, yes, I said nonsense,
- 50:40doesn't conform to reality.
- 50:43It denies reality and wants to reshape reality
- 50:45in its own image.
- 50:48And isn't that really the temptation that we
- 50:51all face is wanting to shape life into
- 50:54our image instead of recognize that we are
- 50:57to follow what God has established.
- 51:00It's an attack on the image of God
- 51:03in people because God said he created us
- 51:05people, you, me, men, women, in his image,
- 51:08and we reflect his image, and it's moral
- 51:11confusion to deny that.
- 51:14So we need to we need to take
- 51:17a serious look at that reality.
- 51:20And when you when you think that people
- 51:23are rejecting God, and particularly as it relates
- 51:26here to what Jesus calls the counselor or
- 51:29the Holy Spirit or the Spirit of Truth,
- 51:32I guess it shouldn't surprise us so much
- 51:35that people reject God because they reject the
- 51:38truth.
- 51:41They just don't want to face up to
- 51:43that which is true.
- 51:46And one day, God, who is the way,
- 51:49the truth, and the life will make all
- 51:51the wrongs right, and people will come to
- 51:54understand that which is true, that which is
- 51:57right, and they will not have any choice.
- 51:59And they will have to acknowledge that.
- 52:02The Bible says at some point they will
- 52:03acknowledge it.
- 52:05I don't think it's acknowledged under coercion.
- 52:08I don't sense that at all.
- 52:09But the Bible says every knee will bow
- 52:11and every tongue will confess that Jesus is
- 52:12Lord.
- 52:14So why don't you do it now?
- 52:17Why don't you hear the truth that he
- 52:20gives us and acknowledge that and surrender to
- 52:23it, submit to it, recognize that God knows
- 52:26what you can never know, and he has
- 52:29offered you forgiveness of sins, he's offered you
- 52:33the spirit of truth so you can understand
- 52:36right from wrong, so you can choose right.
- 52:39And of course, that's what Jesus also says
- 52:41in this passage.
- 52:43He says, if anybody loves me, he'll do
- 52:44what I say.
- 52:46And that's part of what defines Christian.
- 52:53Do we do what he says?
- 52:55And do we recognize that the spirit of
- 52:58truth comes so we will know right from
- 53:00wrong, because we'll know the truth.
- 53:03And of course, the Bible also says you'll
- 53:05know the truth, that it will abide in
- 53:07us and it will set us free.
- 53:09And it does.
- 53:10You don't have to worry about what you
- 53:11believe and what you're doing or what you're
- 53:13saying or where you're going or any of
- 53:15the rest of the stuff when you follow
- 53:17the truth, and especially when you follow the
- 53:19one who is the way, the truth and
- 53:21the life.
- 53:23So the spirit of truth versus moral confusion.
- 53:26We live in a world that's terribly confused,
- 53:29and that also relates to the Israel situation
- 53:32right now and the rise of anti-Semitism, Semitism,
- 53:35and the desire to blame Israel for what
- 53:38happened in Gaza and what happened on October
- 53:417th when the Israelis were attacked.
- 53:44We need to we need the spirit of
- 53:46truth to clear up the moral confusion, and
- 53:48God comes to provide that.
- 53:50And the last thing that we learn in
- 53:52John chapter 14 is another portion I didn't
- 53:55read, where Jesus said he was giving us
- 53:57peace.
- 54:00We live in an age of characterized by
- 54:03anxiety, and Jesus says, I'm giving you peace.
- 54:05Now, what does he what did he mean
- 54:06by that?
- 54:08He meant he's giving us a state of
- 54:10blessing or favor from God.
- 54:14We might say it a different way.
- 54:20Now you might say your life's all chaotic.
- 54:22Well, how do you receive the gift of
- 54:25peace?
- 54:28Well, several ways.
- 54:29One is recognize the truth.
- 54:32We talked about that.
- 54:34One is do what Jesus says.
- 54:38How many people, maybe you live in a
- 54:42state of anxiety, confusion, turmoil.
- 54:47Maybe you could fill in some other blanks
- 54:49because they refuse to do what Jesus said
- 54:51to do.
- 54:53Now you might say, My life's in such
- 54:55a mess, I don't even know where to
- 54:56start to do what Jesus said to do.
- 54:58Well, you came to the right place.
- 54:59I can help you with that.
- 55:00Let me tell you where to start.
- 55:02The spirit of truth can guide you to
- 55:05where you need to start.
- 55:07You may have a lot of things to
- 55:08fix.
- 55:09Okay, fine.
- 55:10Just start where the spirit of truth guides
- 55:12you.
- 55:13And even as I'm talking, if you're concerned
- 55:15about that, the spirit of truth may be
- 55:18giving you direction on what you need to
- 55:20correct.
- 55:22And so you take that step of obeying
- 55:25Jesus' commands, and you begin then to order
- 55:28your life in such a way that it
- 55:31reflects the grace of God and the favor
- 55:34of God and the blessing of God.
- 55:37So many people think God is supposed to
- 55:39do something for them, but they live like
- 55:41the devil and they ignore God.
- 55:43So don't ignore God, do what he says.
- 55:47If you want to know where to start,
- 55:48I'll give you another place to start.
- 55:50Maybe you think this is unnecessary, but it's
- 55:51not.
- 55:52It's absolutely essential.
- 55:54Go to church.
- 55:56Go to church every week.
- 55:57Don't miss an event.
- 55:59Join a Bible study.
- 56:00Bible study, get involved.
- 56:00Get involved.
- 56:02You might say, Well, it's just church.
- 56:02You might say, Well, it's just church.
- 56:04No, it's not just church.
- 56:04No, it's not just church.
- 56:08When you go to church, you gather with
- 56:08When you go to church, you gather with
- 56:11the people of God, and God is there.
- 56:11the people of God, and God is there.
- 56:14You want to find God, go to church.
- 56:14You want to find God, go to church.
- 56:16You want to meet God, go to church.
- 56:16You want to meet God, go to church.
- 56:18You want to have peace with God, go
- 56:18You want to have peace with God?
- 56:19to church.
- 56:20Go to church.
- 56:21Surrender your life to Him.
- 56:21Surrender your life to Him.
- 56:23Allow Him to give you the gift of
- 56:23Allow Him to give you the gift of
- 56:26grace, the peace of Christ.
- 56:26grace, the peace of Christ.
- 56:28I offer it to you today.
- 56:28I offer it to you today.
- 56:30Will you receive it?
- 56:31The peace of Christ.
- 56:33I'm Pastor Rick.
- 56:34Go in peace.
