- 0:00One of the worst days of my life in racing, one of the worst in
- 0:03racing. Robert Yates calls me and I love
- 0:07Robert Yates. Robert and Doug Yates to me are
- 0:09some of the finest human beings there are.
- 0:12Robert calls and says, look, I need you to come meet me this
- 0:15morning at the shop. So I drive to the shop and come
- 0:18in and says, look, I'm going to have to stay on my race team.
- 0:22I'm thinking about selling it to Jack Roush wants to buy it.
- 0:26You know, Dale Jarrett was leaving, taking UPS, going to
- 0:30Michael Walters with the Toyota deal, which is a great deal for
- 0:33Dale Jarrett. But that left us with one team
- 0:36with just me. M&M's was a sponsor and that was
- 0:41a tough meeting to have. But when he said he's going to
- 0:44sell it to Jack Roush, Jack and I did not get along at that time
- 0:48and I hate to bag up on and get really long winded with this
- 0:51story because it's it's it's it's going to show kind of how
- 0:54it all happened you're. Fine, be be long winded, OK?
- 0:59Robert said. Look, I know your situation with
- 1:03Robert Smith and Jack Roush. I will let you go look and do
- 1:09something else so you don't have to stay here.
- 1:12If I do sell it. Jack Rouse just do me a favor.
- 1:14Do not take my sponsor. Please don't take M and Ms.
- 1:17because UPS leaving if if you take M and Ms. with you, I'm not
- 1:21going to have anything. I'm going to have to shut down.
- 1:24I said Robert, I'll. I'll give you my word.
- 1:26I'll give you my promise. I will go meet with M and Ms.
- 1:29and tell them not to go with me wherever I go.
- 1:32So the reason I didn't do the I didn't want to go be a part of
- 1:35the rouse deal. When I drove for The Wood
- 1:37Brothers and I love Eddie and Lynn to death, the Ralph's
- 1:40actually did their contracts. My contract wasn't done with
- 1:45Eddie and Lynn, it was done with Jeff Smith at at Ralph.
- 1:48She was the head guy. So sign a contract where they
- 1:53came to me and say look, we need you to sign another four year
- 1:56deal. If you don't sign, Motorcraft is
- 1:59not going to sign. We had Ford Motorcraft at the
- 2:01time, my car with the red and white 21, he said.
- 2:05Eddie, I can't sign a four year deal.
- 2:07I something was coming. I kind of knew it was coming
- 2:10down the pipeline. I was going to get another
- 2:12opportunity and Eddie said listen please sign.
- 2:14If if you sign, if something comes up and you want to leave,
- 2:18I will let you leave. No problem, I said.
- 2:21But we need you to sign to keep the sponsor.
- 2:24So I said Eddie, yes Sir, I will.
- 2:28So anyway, I signed the deal in the middle of 2002.
- 2:32Robert Yates and M&M's come calling.
- 2:34We want you to drive the 28 car, which they changed the number to
- 2:38the 38. So I went to Eddie Wood.
- 2:40Say, Eddie, listen, I'm sorry, but look, look at this.
- 2:43This is a great opportunity. But he goes, I understand me and
- 2:46you have a deal. No problem.
- 2:48Well, he when he went to Rouse to Get Me Out of my car, they
- 2:51wouldn't let me out of the contract.
- 2:53Man, they were bad at that. Roush was mean back then, mean.
- 2:57So they were mean as hell. And I'm like, Eddie, we had a
- 2:59deal and they were like with the contracts with us and we're
- 3:02scared you're taking DeWalt from Matt Kenseth and going there.
- 3:06I'm not taking DeWalt. I'll sign a contract that says
- 3:09I'm not taking DeWalt. But I couldn't tell them who I
- 3:13was taking because Eminem's was was on a different car at the
- 3:15time. So anyway, I had to forfeit my
- 3:20winnings for the rest of the year.
- 3:22In 2002 it was over $1,000,000 to get them to let you know how
- 3:28racing is. There's a small window, sponsors
- 3:31team. Kenny, you know you only got a
- 3:33month. We can't wait around.
- 3:34We're going to move to the next guy.
- 3:36So I had to do all this stuff, pretty much forfeit my winnings
- 3:39for the rest of the year to have an opportunity to go drive a 38
- 3:43car. So that was my beef with
- 3:44rappers. So when Robert brought me in and
- 3:47we had the conversation that him probably having to sell his team
- 3:52and what was going on, he knew I did not want to go back and get
- 3:56in the middle of what I was just in the middle of.
- 3:58So that's when I ended up at the the 19 car for Ray Evernham.
- 4:03He and Jeremy had had some stuff going on or what have you and I
- 4:06don't know a lot about that, but I got in the 19 car, I went and
- 4:10met with Eminem's and told him, look, love y'all to death.
- 4:13I love me and the Candyman and the Eminem's guy, but if y'all
- 4:18go with me then Robert will have to shut down.
- 4:22They were upset with me and I have a great relationship with
- 4:24them. Different day one.
- 4:25Victoria and Pamela Mars are two of the nicest people in the
- 4:28world. But entertainment, please don't
- 4:30come with me. Stay.
- 4:31And they ended up, you know, sponsoring David Guetta land.
- 4:33And I think they actually added a second car that M&M's paid
- 4:36for, but it kept Robert Yates going.
- 4:39They gave him something to sail to Roush and and keep the doors
- 4:43open to keep those guys employed.
- 4:44And then ultimately, they found Kyle Busch.
- 4:47Championships later, wins later. It all worked out great.
- 4:50We're still good friends at this point.
- 4:53But Kenny, when I ended up in that 19 car, I had no idea what
- 4:57I was getting in the middle of. I didn't realize what was going
- 5:00on with Ray and his personal life.
- 5:02And then he was selling his team to the Gillette's.
- 5:05And Gillette's never paid anybody.
- 5:08And it was just it was a mess all the time and that one year I
- 5:13was running used cars, show cars, used parts.
- 5:18A lot of the Doug Yates has the patience of job.
- 5:23We would never could pay our motor bill.
- 5:27So we wouldn't know on Mondays and Tuesdays and Wednesdays
- 5:29whether we were racing that weekend because we hadn't paid
- 5:31our motor bill yet. They were actually they were
- 5:34actually blocking us in the the trucks in until we paid our
- 5:40motor bill for us to leave. That's how we had to try to
- 5:43race. Well, that was that was tough
- 5:47for us to kind of go through that those, that couple of years
- 5:50and I felt like Kenny, I was standing on the edge of a Cliff
- 5:55waiting for somebody to push me over the side.
- 5:58I mean it. It was absolutely miserable.
- 6:00And the reason you brought that story up is because what you're
- 6:03saying is when you were listening to Jamie McMurray,
- 6:06yeah, it was like, you know what?
- 6:10What ended your career? What really happened there?
- 6:13And Jamie tells the story here. Jamie McMurray, Daytona 500
- 6:17winner. I know you almost won the
- 6:19Daytona 500, He's won the Brickyard, he won Charlotte.
- 6:25And here Chip Ganassi says, hey, sorry, next guy on the other
- 6:29line here, his name is Kurt Busch.
- 6:31He's bringing Monster Energy drinks.
- 6:33So I think later in life what you're saying is that we're
- 6:38giving? The fans.
- 6:39A look at the way it really is. Yeah.
- 6:43I'm going to tell you, Kenny, it was, it was so miserable, so
- 6:47bad. I remember laying in bed crying
- 6:48half the time because you're so frustrated as a driver and you
- 6:52want to just like you. You want to compete.
- 6:55You want to show up knowing you have a chance and it was just a
- 6:58bad deal. We won't get paid.
- 6:59And we was all suing each other. And you know, Menard was my team
- 7:04mate, Dan. Then Casey and Casey finally got
- 7:06out to go to the Red Bull car and I'm going to tell you the
- 7:11day that changed Elliott salary to give me a second chance at
- 7:15race and I'm driving a 19 car. We suck.
- 7:18I suck. I'm.
- 7:19I'm not doing a good job either as a driver because I got all
- 7:22this other stuff, you know, going on in your mind and your
- 7:24head. And I'm running a show car at
- 7:26freaking Bristol on my one of my favorite tracks but Kevin and
- 7:30Delana Harvick giving me an opportunity to drive their truck
- 7:35at Pocono. It was the inaugural truck race
- 7:39at Pocono and Harvick was going to leave.
- 7:42That's back when they used to fly to Iowa.
- 7:44Remember they they we were at Pocono with the Cup cars, but
- 7:47then he'd go to Iowa to run his Xfinity car.
- 7:49Did a lot of that in the day. They did a lot of that in the
- 7:52day. So he needed somebody to drive
- 7:55his truck. Well, a couple weeks before at a
- 7:57driver's intros, I said, hey, look, man, if you ever need
- 8:00somebody to drive your truck or something or car, test it.
- 8:04I think he was having back issues at the time.
- 8:07Dude, I'll be glad to. I don't want any money or
- 8:09anything like that, dude. I just, I just want to race.
- 8:12So they let me get in that Pocono truck and I sat on the
- 8:16pole and won the race, which puts me a part of a very elite
- 8:21group that has a pole and a win in all three of the top series
- 8:26in NASCAR and that win in that winning that inaugural race.
- 8:32Pocono create a relationship when and I knew the 19 was going
- 8:37to end bad and that was my probably my time in Cup racing
- 8:41that Harvick let me come over there and drive his Xfinity car
- 8:45the following year and that was to 2011.
- 8:48So winning that truck race, which was weird.
- 8:52That Saturday I won the inaugural truck race.
- 8:54That Sunday, my own teammates spun me out on the long pond
- 8:58straight away and that's when I hit the inside wall and they
- 9:01threw my engine out. When I was driving that, I hit.
- 9:05A traffic wreck, Catastrophic wreck, man.
- 9:07I was bruised from. I was bruised from head to toe.
- 9:10That was a hard hit. But that gave me life, being
- 9:14around Kevin and and Delano and they gave me an opportunity.
- 9:17Then that fall, a couple weeks later, they let me drive their
- 9:21car at the Bristol night race and I sat on the pole with his
- 9:26Xfinity car and I finished third.
- 9:28I lost the Kyle Bush and Joey Lacano. 2 guys that can fly.
- 9:31Not have been had. Third place, right?
- 9:33I finished third. Reem was my sponsor.
- 9:36It was a great night, the cup car.
- 9:39So I sat on the pole in Xfinity car.
- 9:41The cup car called by dead last and ran dead last the whole
- 9:46night. That's when we had one of the
- 9:48show cars we had pulled out of the showroom floor for me to
- 9:51race. So you talk about being
- 9:55miserable and just just everything could go bad and it
- 9:59really made it where man, I didn't appreciate The Wood
- 10:02Brothers enough or I didn't appreciate my time with you know
- 10:06Robert Yates enough. Now I'm in this situation.
- 10:10But then getting the opportunity to go drive for Harvick and
- 10:12stuff the following year back in the Xfinity Series, man that was
- 10:16a blessing at at at the right time.
- 10:19I really feel like this is jaw-dropping.
- 10:23Because we assume, you know, we always for, for me, you know,
- 10:29when fans come up, sometimes they say the wrong things.
- 10:32They're like, hey, man, I remember when you flipped it
- 10:34poking on like, hold on, whoa, whoa.
- 10:36You're supposed to say, I remember when you won the night
- 10:39race at Bristol. To me, sometimes people, you
- 10:43know, you got the positive people.
- 10:45We're going, man. Elliott, I remember when you won
- 10:47your first Cup race, which we're going to get to.
- 10:50But then you got the fans that go, man, I remember when you
- 10:53flipped the Poconos. So when we talk about, you know,
- 10:58one's career and how was it to be big time, these are the
- 11:02things that is is must, must listen to and sometimes it ruins
- 11:09the good times.
