Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The Subtle Energetic Interchange That Takes Place at a Subliminal Level

- 0:02We tend to pay attention to the various forms of external
- 0:05communication that takes place between people.
- 0:09Written, verbal, and visual, nonverbal cues through body
- 0:13language or expression are all considered to be the major means
- 0:17of creating a relation between individuals.
- 0:21What we do not always recognize, however, is the impact and
- 0:25importance of the subtle subliminal communication that is
- 0:30constantly taking place. We understand that there are
- 0:34vibrations that fall outside the spectrum that we can consciously
- 0:38perceive with our senses. We cannot dismiss them, however,
- 0:43as to their effect on us, simply because we cannot see, hear, or
- 0:48feel them with our limited sense organs.
- 0:52Some examples are easily appreciated.
- 0:54For instance, we sometimes feel like someone is watching us
- 0:59although they are behind us and thus not directly visible to our
- 1:03sight. We get an inner feeling more
- 1:07than a direct sense perception, and it often time proves to be
- 1:12true. Sometimes we get a sense of
- 1:15someone's goodwill or a feeling of comfort, or of being
- 1:18protected in the presence of someone.
- 1:21That represents A subtle perception of the feeling
- 1:24someone is radiating from their inner being.
- 1:28Similarly, we can sometimes get a sense of discomfort or dread
- 1:33if that individual happens to be putting out vibrations that are
- 1:37uncomfortable to US. Women frequently report a
- 1:41feeling of unease from receiving unwanted vibrations of a sexual
- 1:45nature, even when nothing has been overtly said and they
- 1:49cannot see the individual focused on those energies.
- 1:54Sometimes we simply absorb an energy and experience feelings
- 1:58of hunger or sadness without knowing exactly why.
- 2:04A widely reported phenomenon is the feeling of a deep peace or a
- 2:09sense of spiritual energy that occurs in the presence of a
- 2:13dedicated yogic practitioner or realized spiritual being.
- 2:18The atmosphere in their surroundings is permeated with
- 2:22vibrations that fill us with a sense of well-being, an
- 2:25experience of bliss or peace or aspiration, gratitude or love.
- 2:33The more focused we are on the external senses and the thought
- 2:38process that arises therefrom, the less we tend to pay
- 2:42conscious attention to what is taking place within us
- 2:45subliminally. As we shift our awareness inward
- 2:50and reduce our reliance on the impressions and impulses
- 2:53provided by the external sense organs, we can begin to
- 2:58recognize and understand the working of these heretofore
- 3:02subliminal forces. We can then truly begin to
- 3:05appreciate the way we are influenced how thoughts,
- 3:10emotions, feelings develop without any ostensible outer
- 3:16context or support, and we can begin to appreciate the complex
- 3:21interaction of each individual with all others.
- 3:25It is through a deeper appreciation of the subliminal
- 3:28interaction that we can truly gain a better understanding of
- 3:33the ideas, feelings, motivations, needs and drives
- 3:39that are active within ourselves and others, and thereby gain
- 3:43both a deeper understanding and a better ability to manage these
- 3:48impacts within the framework of our aspirations and goals,
- 3:54Shriyorubinda Notes Quote There is a constant, mental, vital,
- 4:00subtle physical interchange going on between all who meet or
- 4:04live together, of which they are themselves unaware, except in so
- 4:08far as its impact and interpenetrations touch them as
- 4:13sensible results of speech and action and outer contact.
- 4:19For the most part, it is suddenly and invisibly that this
- 4:23interchange takes place, for it acts indirectly, touching the
- 4:28subliminal parts and through them the outer nature.
- 4:33But when we grow conscious in these subliminal parts, that
- 4:37brings consciousness also of all this interaction and subjective
- 4:42interchange and intermingling, with the result that we need no
- 4:46longer be involuntarily subjects of their impact and consequence,
- 4:52but can accept or reject, defend ourselves, or isolate.
- 4:57At the same time, our action on others need no longer be
- 5:02ignorant or involuntary and often unintentionally harmful.
- 5:07It can be a conscious help, a luminous interchange and a
- 5:11fruitful accommodation, an approach towards an inner
- 5:15understanding or union, not, as now a separate of association
- 5:20with only a limited intimacy or unity, restricted by much non
- 5:25understanding, and often burdened or endangered by a mass
- 5:30of misunderstanding of mutual misinterpretation and error.
