Speaker 3: in the news I want to get to and I
• 2:29
Speaker 3: will get to that a little bit later on. Well,
• 2:30
Speaker 3: the announcement came down late last week of a new
• 2:33
Speaker 3: state senator for this area, the vacancy coming about following
• 2:37
Speaker 3: the resignation of Mark Hunt, who had to resign since
• 2:39
Speaker 3: he was elected state auditor back in the November election.
• 2:42
Speaker 3: Kevin Bartlett was chosen by Governor Morrisy to fill the role,
• 2:46
Speaker 3: and he joins us this morning.
• 2:47
Speaker 4: Senator, good morning, good morning, day, good to be with
• 2:49
  Speaker 4: you to day.
• 2:50
Speaker 3: Are you a senator now? Or I mean because official
• 2:53
Speaker 3: swearing in is not till Wednesday.
• 2:54
  Speaker 4: That's correct. I can't answer that question. I'm hearing it
• 2:58
Speaker 4: a lot. I'm still getting used to that. But I'm
• 3:00
  Speaker 4: just Kevin.
• 3:00
Speaker 3: It would be great, Kevin, and I mean senator elect.
• 3:04
  Speaker 3: I don't think because.
• 3:05
Speaker 4: William an election point is senator appointee perhaps, how Abut we.
• 3:08
Speaker 3: Just go with Kevin. I like it all right? All right,
• 3:10
Speaker 3: So tell us about Kevin Bartlett. Give us a little biof.
• 3:14
Speaker 6: I'm local from here in the Charleston area. Grew up
• 3:16
Speaker 6: in here in the Kanaal Valley. My parents, both of
• 3:19
Speaker 6: them are multi generational West Virginians, and I have lived
• 3:23
Speaker 6: and served in the Cistonville community northern Kanaha County since
• 3:27
Speaker 6: I was a kid. My vocation is I'm the pastor
• 3:31
Speaker 6: of Marinatha Baptist Church on the north side of Charleston,
• 3:34
Speaker 6: in the Cistonville community. I'm really blessed I get to
• 3:38
Speaker 6: serve as pastor of the church I grew up in.
• 3:40
Speaker 6: My dad started the church in nineteen sixty nine. After
• 3:43
Speaker 6: Bible College in Tennessee, I came home and I was
• 3:46
Speaker 6: Dad's assistant pastor for twenty four years. He retired and
• 3:50
Speaker 6: I became the senior sixteen years ago. So I've been
• 3:53
Speaker 6: in one place to serve for forty years. So I'm
• 3:58
Speaker 6: West Virginians through and through it, and glad the Lord
• 4:01
Speaker 6: lets me live here and serve here. Have wonderful people
• 4:03
Speaker 6: in my church. I got engaged in politics by as
• 4:07
Speaker 6: a pastor going to d C on an annual trip
• 4:10
Speaker 6: to pray with and minister to our representatives there. Started
• 4:15
Speaker 6: doing the same kind of thing with other pastors here
• 4:17
Speaker 6: in Charleston at the state level, and just got more
• 4:20
Speaker 6: and more engaged. And then my delegate, Delegate Malcolm Sharon
• 4:26
Speaker 6: Malcolm passed away suddenly and I was appointed by Governor
• 4:30
Speaker 6: Justice to fill out the remainder of her term. There
• 4:32
Speaker 6: was a year left on that that was the year
• 4:35
Speaker 6: leading into COVID, and so I've just been looking and
• 4:38
Speaker 6: praying about the opportunity to step back into politics.
• 4:42
  Speaker 4: I enjoy it.
• 4:42
Speaker 6: I see it as an extension of my pastoral ministry.
• 4:45
Speaker 6: And this is the door that the Lord opened, and
• 4:47
Speaker 6: only he could have opened it, and I'm thankful to
• 4:50
Speaker 6: be in this position of service.
• 4:53
Speaker 3: What is it about politics that interest you? I mean,
• 4:57
Speaker 3: because there's a lot of folks that like it from
• 4:59
Speaker 3: the outside, But did you actually want to get in
• 5:01
  Speaker 3: and do stuff?
• 5:03
  Speaker 4: What is it?
• 5:03
Speaker 3: What's the appeal for you?
• 5:04
Speaker 6: Well, there isn't There is an appeal that you can
• 5:06
Speaker 6: actually accomplish things and get things done. And in the legislature,
• 5:11
Speaker 6: in the House your one voice of one hundred. In
• 5:13
Speaker 6: the Senate you're one voice of thirty four. But those
• 5:16
Speaker 6: voices can have an impact and affect the lives of
• 5:20
Speaker 6: West Virginians. You know, the Bible says righteousness exalteth the nation,
• 5:25
Speaker 6: sent as or approach to any people. Well, how does
• 5:26
Speaker 6: righteousness good things, write proper things, How does that get exalted? Well,
• 5:30
Speaker 6: in our form of government, it's done through the legislative process.
• 5:35
Speaker 6: And so if we want to have good if we
• 5:38
Speaker 6: want to have good legislative process, you've got to have
• 5:40
Speaker 6: good legislators there who know, who understand what good things are,
• 5:44
Speaker 6: righteousness is. And I enjoy the process of working out
• 5:48
Speaker 6: the puzzle of things. I enjoy the process of the
• 5:51
Speaker 6: relationships with other servants and folks in government. Again, it's
• 5:56
Speaker 6: it's just an extension of helping people. My dad taught
• 5:59
Speaker 6: me in Menat as a pastor. We're in the people
• 6:01
Speaker 6: business and This is really just another avenue.
• 6:05
Speaker 4: Of being in the people business.
• 6:06
Speaker 3: Talking again with I guess soon to be Senator Keith
• 6:10
Speaker 3: ken soon to be Senator Kevin Bartlett this morning, but
• 6:13
Speaker 3: Dave Island showing five at ey Line Bright too, part
• 6:15
Speaker 3: by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston dirty Birds. Before
• 6:18
Speaker 3: you know it, it'll be time to play ball at

• 6:25
Speaker 3: Now you're going to be serving in the eighth district.
• 6:28
Speaker 3: That's correct, Okay, And this is the district As I
• 6:30
Speaker 3: said that Mark Hunt held that position, but he was
• 6:33
Speaker 3: elected to state auditor. What area is the eighth I mean,
• 6:35
  Speaker 3: it's a just talking about.
• 6:37
Speaker 6: It's an unusual district. It is all of Calhoun, excuse me,
• 6:42
Speaker 6: all of Roan and all of Clay, not Calhoun, all
• 6:45
Speaker 6: of Clay, all of Rome, a little bit of work,
• 6:48
Speaker 6: a slice of Jackson, a slice on the northern side
• 6:51
Speaker 6: of Canaw. It goes down to a little bit of
• 6:53
Speaker 6: western Putnam, and then a finger comes up the central
• 6:56
Speaker 6: part of the Kanaw County kind of dunbar right up
• 7:01
Speaker 6: into downtown Charleston. It's an odd drawing on the delegate
• 7:06
Speaker 6: Ora excuse the senator district maps.
• 7:08
Speaker 3: And one of the things I think that's interesting about
• 7:10
Speaker 3: this district is, as you said, it takes in a
• 7:14
Speaker 3: lot of ground and some of the areas, some of
• 7:17
Speaker 3: the things that are of concern to one particular area
• 7:20
Speaker 3: may not be as much to the other area.
• 7:24
Speaker 6: Yes, so you got to kind of balance that out.
• 7:26
Speaker 6: That's a real challenge for whoever is serving in a
• 7:29
Speaker 6: district like that. And this may be I've been looking
• 7:31
Speaker 6: at the maps, this may be the most extreme example
• 7:34
Speaker 6: of that the eighth And in my interview process with
• 7:38
Speaker 6: the committee that was part of the selection that referred
• 7:42
Speaker 6: Polks to the governor for the appointment, that was asked
• 7:45
Speaker 6: about you know, you have rural counties represented, and you
• 7:48
Speaker 6: have Charleston represented. And I believe I'm in a good
• 7:52
Speaker 6: spot there that I'm close to Charleston, but I live
• 7:56
Speaker 6: in I live probably a quarter mile as the crow
• 7:58
Speaker 6: flies from Jackson County, and my wife and I do
• 8:01
Speaker 6: a lot of business in Jackson County. I hunt and
• 8:03
Speaker 6: fish and in those those central counties. But it will
• 8:08
Speaker 6: be a task that I will embrace to get to
• 8:10
Speaker 6: know the needs of the rural counties in parallel need
• 8:15
Speaker 6: assessment with the Charleston area.
• 8:18
Speaker 3: You mentioned that you were appointed to the House previously.
• 8:23
Speaker 3: What did you learn in the in the House that
• 8:26
Speaker 3: you think is going to serve you in the Senate.
• 8:27
Speaker 3: Because you said it's a numbers game. You're one of
• 8:29
Speaker 3: one hundred you know, in the House, a little bit
• 8:31
Speaker 3: less actually a lot less than the Senate. So what
• 8:34
Speaker 3: did you look back on those time and think, well,
• 8:36
Speaker 3: maybe I'll do this differently, or I'll do this the same.
• 8:39
Speaker 6: Yes, Well, for one thing, you have to engage with
• 8:43
Speaker 6: with other delegates and be engaging with other Senators. There's
• 8:47
Speaker 6: partnerships on getting anything done. One person can't get anything done,
• 8:52
Speaker 6: I believe. I believe Senator Mansion had expressed frustration from
• 8:56
Speaker 6: going from executive to legislative service that very thing that
• 9:01
Speaker 6: he wasn't just the chief officer that could get things done.
• 9:03
Speaker 6: So collaborative and cooperative efforts with other servants, that's a key.
• 9:08
Speaker 6: I learned that really quick when I arrived at the House,
• 9:11
Speaker 6: and I want to bring that to the Senate as well.
• 9:14
Speaker 3: It's big in your agenda. The session starts next week.
• 9:16
Speaker 3: The governor will be given his state of the his
• 9:19
Speaker 3: state of the state next week. What are you looking
• 9:23
  Speaker 3: ahead to?
• 9:24
Speaker 6: Well, I appreciate the bullet list that the governor put
• 9:27
Speaker 6: out the first couple of days after he was sworn
• 9:29
Speaker 6: in some big initiative points, and I agree with every
• 9:33
Speaker 6: one of them. And I really appreciate the fact that
• 9:36
Speaker 6: what he said in motion as governor were the very
• 9:39
Speaker 6: things that he ran on all those months in the campaign.
• 9:41
Speaker 6: I appreciate. I appreciate that. So I'm on board with
• 9:45
Speaker 6: all of those points. In general. Politically, I'm pro life.
• 9:50
Speaker 6: That's that's a big important issue for me. Pro Second Amendment,
• 9:54
Speaker 6: Religious freedom issues are important concern I'm very concerned that
• 10:00
Speaker 6: there is an element in the legislature that is looking
• 10:04
Speaker 6: to make recreational marijuana legal in West Virginia. I think
• 10:07
Speaker 6: that's a terrible mistake. So I think it will harm
• 10:11
Speaker 6: our young people, don't. I think it will put in
• 10:15
Speaker 6: in the normality even more malaise and just non accomplishment
• 10:23
Speaker 6: among young people. So I just and I've watched what's
• 10:28
Speaker 6: happened somewhat in Colorado and other states. I don't I
• 10:31
Speaker 6: don't see any state where they say, oh man, this
• 10:33
Speaker 6: was one of the best things we ever did, so
• 10:37
Speaker 6: that that's been there for a long time. I want
• 10:38
Speaker 6: to try to hold the line with others on that
• 10:42
Speaker 6: there is a great need in our foster care structure.
• 10:46
  Speaker 2: Uh.
• 10:47
Speaker 6: And I'm so appreciative and I applaud those who are
• 10:50
Speaker 6: foster parents and those who are working in the structure.
• 10:53
Speaker 6: But the structure needs needs a lot of help, and frankly,
• 10:57
Speaker 6: it probably needs a lot of funding. And we've got
• 10:59
Speaker 6: to get more people trained. We've got to streamline the
• 11:01
Speaker 6: process to get more foster parents online ready to receive
• 11:05
Speaker 6: children in crisis. That's an issue that I that I
• 11:08
Speaker 6: have a great interest in bringing some good help to bear.
• 11:12
Speaker 3: Speaking of of budgets and money, and there seems to
• 11:15
Speaker 3: be some sort of a disconnect between the previous administration
• 11:20
Speaker 3: and then what Governor Morrissey has come in, and there's
• 11:22
Speaker 3: going to have to one way or the other. I
• 11:23
Speaker 3: think most people would believe there were there's going to
• 11:25
Speaker 3: have to be some some some.
• 11:27
Speaker 4: Belt tightening a little bit.
• 11:28
Speaker 6: Kevin, Well, no doubt, government always needs to be belt tightening.
• 11:33
Speaker 6: And as you said, I'm the senator appointee pending, so
• 11:37
  Speaker 6: I haven't I haven't had opportunity to look at numbers.
• 11:40
Speaker 6: But yes, the fact that the previous Governor Justice had
• 11:44
Speaker 6: one perspective on where we are financially and now Governor
• 11:47
Speaker 6: Morrisey has a different perspective. Uh, there's obviously going to
• 11:50
Speaker 6: have to be some work done. One thing we don't
• 11:52
Speaker 6: need to do is tax the people of West Virginia
• 11:54
Speaker 6: any harder. So I'm sure that the governor will lead us,
• 11:59
Speaker 6: and the Senate and the House will come right alongside
• 12:02
Speaker 6: it with some good ideas as well to get our
• 12:05
Speaker 6: financial house even further in order than we've come. We've
• 12:08
Speaker 6: come a long way in the last ten years in
• 12:10
Speaker 6: this state, and that's a wonderful thing, but there's much
• 12:13
Speaker 6: ground to be gained.
• 12:15
Speaker 3: Why do you think it's a pretty good time, Kevin,
• 12:18
Speaker 3: to be a Republican in West Virginia? And it has been,
• 12:21
Speaker 3: you know, for of well over over ten years. I
• 12:24
Speaker 3: keep running out of name. As we called it, the
• 12:25
Speaker 3: super majority, now the super duper majority. Now I'm gonna
• 12:28
Speaker 3: have to add another duper onto that. I guess what
• 12:31
Speaker 3: is it about the Republican message that you think, sir
• 12:35
Speaker 3: is resonating so much? I've said it before. I mean,
• 12:39
Speaker 3: I think that the political historians one hundred years from
• 12:43
Speaker 3: now are going to look back on this wave that
• 12:46
Speaker 3: rolled over West Virginia that really started before Donald Trump.
• 12:49
  Speaker 4: Absolutely.
• 12:50
Speaker 3: What is it about the message that you think is
• 12:52
Speaker 3: getting over so much with West Virginian Sir.
• 12:54
Speaker 6: Well, I think West Virginians are in general self really people,
• 13:01
Speaker 6: and that there's a core of that in the Republican
• 13:03
Speaker 6: message as opposed to the other side. And like David,
• 13:06
Speaker 6: as you mentioned, it's historic. I'm sixty four, so I
• 13:11
Speaker 6: have memory when the pigulum was swung almost exactly opposite
• 13:15
Speaker 6: from where it is today, when there's just a tiny
• 13:18
Speaker 6: handful of senators and delegates in the Republican Party and
• 13:22
Speaker 6: it swung so fast. And certainly, certainly the Trump factor
• 13:26
Speaker 6: has accelerated, but you're right, it began before he was
• 13:30
Speaker 6: on the political horizon. I think it's basic common sense.
• 13:34
Speaker 6: I think the I think the other side road the
• 13:37
Speaker 6: traditions of West Virginia from the mine Wars and all that,
• 13:43
Speaker 6: and the Democratic Party was the working Man's Party and
• 13:45
Speaker 6: all that, and you know they that momentum carried them
• 13:49
Speaker 6: for a long time, even beyond substance in my opinion,
• 13:53
Speaker 6: and so when it swung, it swung quick, and then
• 13:55
Speaker 6: you have to look back and say, man, there was
• 13:57
Speaker 6: some there was some pretty key leadership that executed things.
• 14:02
Speaker 6: Now justice you know Tim Armstead as speaker, when the
• 14:05
Speaker 6: Republicans did gain the control, and then what they accomplished,
• 14:09
Speaker 6: they hit the ground running on both sides of the
• 14:13
Speaker 6: both sides of the Capitol. And so it's I don't
• 14:15
Speaker 6: think there's one thing you can point to, but I
• 14:18
Speaker 6: do agree with your assessment completely. It will be looked at, studied,
• 14:21
Speaker 6: and highlighted as a unique pendulum swing politically in our state.
• 14:26
Speaker 6: I'm glad I lived to see it and to see
• 14:30
Speaker 6: the good things that have come from.

Speaker 6: Three were selected to be referred to to the governor.

Speaker 6: And that was a prestigious list. On the thirteen, a

• 18:29
Speaker 3: be a terrible, terrible mistake. Do not do it, says
• 18:33
Speaker 3: a Texter. Tex says, well, no surprise. We got a
• 18:35
Speaker 3: fundamentalist Christian appointed to the Senate. Kevin sounds like he'll
• 18:39
Speaker 3: reverse same sex marriage. Dave, you should have someone from

• 19:34
Speaker 3: Mayor Amy Shielder good ones coming up on this show
• 19:37
Speaker 3: a little bit later on. But Dave Iland Show in
• 19:38
Speaker 3: five Videy LIVEE brought to you partly by Morgan and Morgan,
• 19:40
Speaker 3: America's largest injury law firm. What a first week or
• 19:45
Speaker 3: so of both the administrations of West Virginia Governor Patrick
• 19:50
Speaker 3: Morrison President Donald Trump. Now, I am not an economist
• 19:54
Speaker 3: by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm going to
• 19:58
Speaker 3: go ahead and guess and based on everything I've read,
• 20:02
Speaker 3: that your prices on a lot of stuff are about
• 20:06
Speaker 3: to go up, produce being one of the major things.
• 20:11
Speaker 3: And stop me if I'm rung. Didn't we elect Trump
• 20:15
Speaker 3: because we were tired of high prices? Now comes worth
• 20:18
Speaker 3: that Canada. Our evil neighbors to the north are pulling
• 20:22
Speaker 3: our products off the shelves, those evil Canadians. This is
• 20:27
Speaker 3: going to get interesting. And as I said, I am
• 20:30
Speaker 3: not an economist. I'm just a guy that you know
• 20:34
Speaker 3: doesn't like paying a lot because the older I get,
• 20:37
Speaker 3: the cheaper I get. And now the Trump administration is
• 20:43
Speaker 3: asking for information on people that investigated or pretty much
• 20:49
Speaker 3: had anything to do from a government standpoint into the
• 20:53
Speaker 3: January sixth investigations, and of course getting a lot of
• 21:00
Speaker 3: attention in the news I watched. I consumed a lot
• 21:02
Speaker 3: of it over the weekend, so trying to get over
• 21:04
Speaker 3: this cold, so I thought, well, I'll just vedge in
• 21:06
Speaker 3: front of the TV a lot this weekend, do a
• 21:07
Speaker 3: little reading and whatnot. DEI is getting a lot of
• 21:13
Speaker 3: attention now. It was announced on Friday that West Virginia
• 21:17
Speaker 3: University is closing its Division Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and
• 21:22
Speaker 3: replacing it with something called the Division of Campus Engagement
• 21:26
Speaker 3: and Marketing. Now Governor Morrissey is applotting to move although
• 21:31
Speaker 3: the people I talked with at university say that not
• 21:34
Speaker 3: a whole lot is actually going to change really, And
• 21:39
Speaker 3: I think one of the biggest problems that we have
• 21:44
Speaker 3: here is that everyone seems to have a different definition
• 21:49
Speaker 3: of what DEI is. That seems to be a major problem,
• 21:57
Speaker 3: including Governor Morrissey. Now he referred to it as and
• 22:01
Speaker 3: this is quote any effort to promote differential treatment of
• 22:05
Speaker 3: or to provide special benefits to individuals on the basis
• 22:09
Speaker 3: of race, color, sex, ethnicity, or national origin end quote
• 22:17
Speaker 3: and at WVU and then a little dive into some
• 22:20
Speaker 3: of this over the weekend. Some of the things that
• 22:22
Speaker 3: they did also connected staff with and students with various trainings,
• 22:28
Speaker 3: veterans programs, therapy dogs, etc. So again, it varies depending
• 22:34
Speaker 3: on the program. And you'll recall I talked about the
• 22:39
Speaker 3: program a WVU on this show a couple of years ago,
• 22:41
Speaker 3: but my criticism at the time was more about what
• 22:44
Speaker 3: the executive director was being paid, considering that the university
• 22:49
Speaker 3: was cutting programs right and left and was really struggling financially,
• 22:54
Speaker 3: which it still is now. April call who is with
• 22:57
Speaker 3: the university, has said that students and staff will see
• 23:02
Speaker 3: very few changes, and so it looks and sounds good
• 23:10
Speaker 3: if you are in favor of eliminating or changing up DEI.
• 23:13
Speaker 3: But I don't expect that a whole lot is actually
• 23:18
Speaker 3: going to change. Older adults should protect themselves against severe
• 23:23
Speaker 3: respiratory disease. Talk to your doctor about flu, COVID nineteen
• 23:26
Speaker 3: and RSV vaccines Risk Lass, do more and get started
• 23:30

• 23:32
Speaker 3: Department of Health and Human Services. Let me see tex
• 23:36
Speaker 3: says it was very generous for President Trump to schedule
• 23:39
Speaker 3: a market crash rather than to have it happened unexpectedly.
• 23:41
Speaker 3: He has a very big lely brain as a texture.
• 23:45
Speaker 3: I don't want to spend a whole lot of time
• 23:46
Speaker 3: talking about this because I know Wilson and Meadows are
• 23:48
Speaker 3: going to get into it more on talk Line today.
• 23:50
Speaker 3: But Brad mclhenney has a story posted this morning wv
• 23:53
Speaker 3: Metronews dot com that the nation's report card has been released.
• 23:58
Speaker 3: The National Assessment of Education Progress is what it's called,
• 24:01
Speaker 3: and it tests students in the fourth and eighth grades.
• 24:06
Speaker 3: West Virginia's test scores, as Brad points out, are holding steady,
• 24:11
Speaker 3: but we are still below the majority of the nation.
• 24:15
Speaker 3: The majority of our students. Students are not meeting grade
• 24:20
Speaker 3: level expectations in both reading and math. Now in math
• 24:28
Speaker 3: our numbers went up, but only actually one of only
• 24:31
Speaker 3: fifteen states that the numbers went up, but still still
• 24:34
Speaker 3: well below where they should be. Something just not right
• 24:43
Speaker 3: in our schools. And again, Brad's got the story post
• 24:45
Speaker 3: to wv metronews dot com and I'll let mister Wilson,
• 24:49
Speaker 3: mister Meadows handle that a little bit more. On talk line,
• 24:52
Speaker 3: tex says, the idiot Trump cultists will start to regurgitating
• 24:56
Speaker 3: the synchronized conservative outrage media propaganda as to why higher
• 25:00
Speaker 3: are beneficial for everyone. These people's only values is competing
• 25:04
Speaker 3: on how hard they ride the narrative given to them
• 25:09
Speaker 3: Texas Day. The nation's top economists agree Trump's policies are
• 25:12
Speaker 3: terrible and anyone who thinks otherwise is crazy. Virtually all economists,
• 25:17
Speaker 3: this is a quote, according to a textor virtually all
• 25:19
Speaker 3: economists think that the impact of the terroriffs will be

Speaker 10: and I tell the story every year and I love it. It's

• 29:51
Speaker 10: remember standing there in the nurse saying, y'all should play

• 29:56

Speaker 10: and he was born was seven eleven, and so that's

Speaker 3: The day the day I turned twenty one, I was
• 31:31
Speaker 3: a Marshall University student, okay, and I went down to
• 31:35
Speaker 3: and this shows you how old I am. I went
• 31:37
Speaker 3: down the Big Bear on at the end of Third
• 31:40
Speaker 3: Avenue on Huntington and uh. And I had saved money,
• 31:44
Speaker 3: because that's what you do, you know, in college. I
• 31:47
Speaker 3: had saved money because I wanted to go purchase. Even
• 31:50
Speaker 3: though I'm not a whiskey drinker per se, I wanted
• 31:54
Speaker 3: to go on my twenty first per.
• 31:55
  Speaker 10: A big boy.
• 31:56
  Speaker 3: And well, I went and I and I and I
• 31:59
Speaker 3: never will forget at this. I got a bottle of
• 32:01
Speaker 3: something so cheap, and I went to the counter and
• 32:04
Speaker 3: the lady started, you know, checking me out, and she
• 32:08
Speaker 3: did not ask for my ID. Oh, And I said
• 32:12
Speaker 3: to her, I said, would you like to ask for
• 32:15
Speaker 3: my ID? And she looked at me and she said,
• 32:18
Speaker 3: let me guess you're twenty one today.
• 32:21
Speaker 10: Shocking boy, this has never happened to me. I want
• 32:24
Speaker 10: do you know what? She was just waiting. She's like,
• 32:25
Speaker 10: here he comes here, a proud as a peacock, your
• 32:28
Speaker 10: chest puffed out. And she thought, I'm not gonna.
• 32:31
Speaker 3: And I ended up giving the bottle away to somebody
• 32:33
Speaker 3: because I just I just wanted to go do it.
• 32:35
Speaker 3: Why I didn't just buy a beer or something.
• 32:37
  Speaker 4: I don't know.
• 32:38
Speaker 3: Bartle's and James Wine. Cool word, you know something back
• 32:40
Speaker 3: in the day. The mayor is here and as always
• 32:43
Speaker 3: is open to take your questions and comments. It's open
• 32:45
Speaker 3: lines with the mayor. You got something on your mind?
• 32:47
Speaker 3: Bigley Pickley Wiggly hotline three zero four three four five
• 32:50
Speaker 3: fifty eight fifty eight. Tony the Tailor Text three zero
• 32:52
Speaker 3: four nine three five five zero zero eight. Speaking of
• 32:55
Speaker 3: which me, let me read this. This has nothing to
• 32:57
Speaker 3: do with you. That's about the other cop sation. Not
• 33:01
Speaker 3: promoting weed, says a texture. But alcohol is as bad
• 33:05
Speaker 3: or worse than weed, and it's legal. Anyone who says
• 33:07
Speaker 3: otherwise is fooling themselves and doesn't understand alcohol.
• 33:10
Speaker 10: As yeah, are the mother of two boys twenty one
• 33:12
Speaker 10: and twenty soon to be twenty three, I do worry
• 33:15
  Speaker 10: about alcohol. There's there's no ques. I mean, I know
• 33:17
Speaker 10: that doesn't have anything to do with me, but as
• 33:19
Speaker 10: you know, I'm the mayor, but I'm a mom first,
• 33:21
Speaker 10: and so I'm always keeping that on children. Speaking of
• 33:24
Speaker 10: children and West Virginia, children not children. She's a young woman. Now,
• 33:28
Speaker 10: how about your affair four? About her? This morning?
• 33:31
Speaker 3: I have not, but I know Chris and Jeff had
• 33:34
Speaker 3: a story. I think she won four Grammys, and I
• 33:36
Speaker 3: remember when she was on this show. She came on,
• 33:39
Speaker 3: I guess promoting Live on the Levee.
• 33:40
Speaker 10: She was, she was on Live on the Levee and boys,
• 33:44
  Speaker 10: she's just taken off. I mean, I don't know if
• 33:45
Speaker 10: you're gonna have Pushkin on this week Er news.
• 33:47
Speaker 3: He's actually on tomorrow.
• 33:48
Speaker 10: Oh okay, Well, Mike Pushkin, Delicate Pushkin is very close
• 33:52
Speaker 10: with her, as played with her Gostu Wiz. I don't
• 33:55
Speaker 10: know how many thousands of times, hundreds of times, and
• 33:58
Speaker 10: they're very close. But boy, oh boy, it was. It
• 34:00
Speaker 10: was wonderful to see her taking center stage. You know,
• 34:04
Speaker 10: four time Grammy Award winning artists now Charleston, West Virginia.
• 34:07
  Speaker 10: We're just well, we've had a great week. I mean
• 34:10
Speaker 10: last week also, we had a chef, Chase uh Collier
• 34:16
Speaker 10: at restaurant a Bersei, which is the restaurant I went
• 34:19
Speaker 10: to last week for a restaurant week. He's now a
• 34:21
Speaker 10: nominee for the Best Chef in the Southeast SAMs nominee
• 34:26
Speaker 10: is nominee. I mean, we just we've had We've had
• 34:29
Speaker 10: a really good couple of weeks for people making making
• 34:32
Speaker 10: headlines for all the right reasons. Hard work, dedication. I mean,
• 34:35
Speaker 10: talk about two industries, two businesses that you really have
• 34:38
Speaker 10: to put your nose to the grindstone and keep going.
• 34:42
Speaker 10: And nights, weekends, holidays when nobody's there, there are no
• 34:47
Speaker 10: cameras there. It's not fun and games, you know, perfecting
• 34:50
Speaker 10: your craft. These two young individuals are just they're killing
• 34:55
Speaker 10: it for us. It's really special, really special.
• 34:57
Speaker 3: Got a text here for you as for mayor, can
• 35:01
Speaker 3: we get the city to supply plastic recycling bags. I
• 35:05
Speaker 3: live on what I'm told is a supervisor route. I
• 35:08
Speaker 3: have a full blue bind, but the city won't pick
• 35:10
Speaker 3: it up since it's not bagged, because the truck doesn't
• 35:12
Speaker 3: come down my street. I'm not rich, and these bags
• 35:15
Speaker 3: are getting expensive. Neither bin emptied or a supply of
• 35:18
  Speaker 3: city bags.
• 35:19
Speaker 10: Yeah, So I wish this person would call me three
• 35:22
Speaker 10: four eight eight one seven four three four eight eight
• 35:24
Speaker 10: one seven four in the Mayor's office. If you don't
• 35:27
Speaker 10: mind to give me a holler, I will go ahead
• 35:29
Speaker 10: and say this. It's something that is brought up often.
• 35:33
Speaker 10: Why don't we You know, we used to in the
• 35:35
Speaker 10: City of Charleston give away recycling bags and garbage bags.
• 35:39
Speaker 10: They were paper thin, they would break. It was close
• 35:42
Speaker 10: to four hundred and sixty thousand dollars a year we
• 35:45
Speaker 10: would spend on these bags, which, by the way, we
• 35:48
Speaker 10: gave you recycling bags that were not recyclable. And so
• 35:53
Speaker 10: we were the only city I still have not found
• 35:56
Speaker 10: in six years of big Mayor. So I have not
• 35:57
Speaker 10: found another city, not just in the state of West Virginia,
• 36:00
Speaker 10: in the country who would do this. And the reason
• 36:03
Speaker 10: why is because back in the day when we all
• 36:05
Speaker 10: had metal cans, a lot of folks had metal cans.
• 36:08
Speaker 10: They put their trash out and to fill up with
• 36:10
Speaker 10: rain or snow and it would get really heavy.
• 36:13
  Speaker 3: Uh.
• 36:13
Speaker 10: And so the answer to a lot of our injuries
• 36:15
Speaker 10: and it makes sense back then, right, Okay, we'll give
• 36:18
Speaker 10: people bags. So our guys could you know, pull the
• 36:20
Speaker 10: bags out. But the bags that we were giving were
• 36:24
Speaker 10: you know, a huge cost, and by the way, not
• 36:27
Speaker 10: everybody picked them up. When I became mayor, I said,
• 36:29
Speaker 10: where do we where do we house these? How many
• 36:31
Speaker 10: do we have left? We had a tractor trailer full
• 36:33
  Speaker 10: of them.
• 36:34
  Speaker 9: Uh.
• 36:35
Speaker 10: So we started to use them during our you know,
• 36:38
Speaker 10: team up to clean up pickups and for park and
• 36:40
Speaker 10: rex and internal use as well, just to make sure
• 36:43
Speaker 10: that we were useful of that. But if that person
• 36:45
Speaker 10: wants to call me, I'm super happy to have a
• 36:48
Speaker 10: have a conversation about their route and the challenges that
• 36:52
Speaker 10: they're having with your Yeah, sure you met three oh
• 36:54
Speaker 10: four three four eight eight one seven four. If you
• 36:57
Speaker 10: ask for Andrew Uh, he'll be able to take all
• 37:00
Speaker 10: your information. I appreciate that.
• 37:02
Speaker 3: Tex says, is there a city ordinance concerning the number
• 37:04
Speaker 3: of dogs that can be in one household within the
• 37:07
  Speaker 3: city limits.
• 37:07
Speaker 10: Yeah, there is, it's actually on ordnance. It's it's actually
• 37:12
Speaker 10: two and then they need a permit. But if you
• 37:16
Speaker 10: want more than two dogs, you can do a written
• 37:20
Speaker 10: application and send it to our humane officer and then
• 37:25
Speaker 10: the the permit shouldn't include a copy of you know,
• 37:29
Speaker 10: you know your your site plan, you know your house,
• 37:32
Speaker 10: your property. You know, do you have big enough space
• 37:36
Speaker 10: for those dogs? So you fencing? You know that kind
• 37:39
Speaker 10: of thing too, But if, of course, if you have.
• 37:41
Speaker 10: Of course, our our dog passed a year ago this January.
• 37:45
Speaker 10: He was as my father in law like used to
• 37:47
Speaker 10: like to say about Gus the bus Goodwin. He was
• 37:49
Speaker 10: the perfect sized pony. So one dog was lab Saint Bernard.
• 37:53
Speaker 10: He was enough dog for for for us. We could
• 37:57
Speaker 10: the boys used to ride him when he was like
• 37:59
Speaker 10: when he loved it of it.
• 38:00
Speaker 3: So Tex says, does the mayor have any info on
• 38:03
Speaker 3: the rumor that the town center is closing this summer?
• 38:07
Speaker 10: No, that is not I mean, I you know, rumors
• 38:10
Speaker 10: are just that. I will say that we work at
• 38:14
Speaker 10: you know, every day, hand in glove. I went to
• 38:16
Speaker 10: it with the owners of them all and with the
• 38:19
Speaker 10: mall possibly could be moving forward, you know J C.
• 38:24
Speaker 10: Penny when they filed for bankruptcy back in Dave twenty
• 38:28
  Speaker 10: twenty twenty.
• 38:30
Speaker 3: Something like that. Yeah, I talked about it the other day.
• 38:32
  Speaker 13: Yeah.
• 38:33
Speaker 10: I mean, you know, so when it happened, it shouldn't
• 38:35
Speaker 10: have been a surprise.
• 38:37
Speaker 3: Well, I mean they're closing somewhere in the neighbor of
• 38:39
Speaker 3: one hundred and twenty stores across America.
• 38:41
Speaker 10: Yeah, and they have been since, you know, since that time.
• 38:45
Speaker 10: But what you know what, Well, I went to a
• 38:48
Speaker 10: group last week to speak to actually business owners business
• 38:52
Speaker 10: roundtable in we were talking about that and someone says,
• 38:55
Speaker 10: you just have the ability to go in and take it. Well,
• 38:59
Speaker 10: do I have the ability to go in and take
• 39:00
  Speaker 10: people's businesses? No? I don't. That's not what we do.
• 39:05
Speaker 10: Are we working with the current owner? Yes? Are we
• 39:08
Speaker 10: going to continue to Yes.
• 39:11
Speaker 3: When you say you're working with the current owner, what
• 39:12
Speaker 3: does that look like? Because I know there was a
• 39:15
Speaker 3: lot of fanfare when the whole group bought them, and uh,
• 39:18
Speaker 3: and you even arranged for us to have mister Hall
• 39:22
Speaker 3: of the group on the show. And so what kind
• 39:25
Speaker 3: of com I mean, if you I don't want to
• 39:26
Speaker 3: give away too much, what kind of conversations go on? Because,
• 39:30
Speaker 3: as you said, people you know, and last week when
• 39:33
Speaker 3: this news came out, Mayor, I read all these comments online,
• 39:36
Speaker 3: you know, from people that were saying, well, the city,
• 39:39
Speaker 3: the city is. It's a private business and they can
• 39:41
Speaker 3: pretty much do what they want, but but you do
• 39:43
Speaker 3: try to get involved a little. I guess what do
• 39:45
Speaker 3: the conversations look like?
• 39:46
Speaker 10: Yeah, let me go backwards for I go forward. So
• 39:48
Speaker 10: when I ran for mayor, I remember I used to say,
• 39:51
Speaker 10: you know all that you know? You know Mayor Jones's
• 39:55
Speaker 10: who is a dear friend of mine. I used to say, boy,
• 39:57
Speaker 10: if you could have just schooled me on a couple
• 39:59
Speaker 10: of things before I got in, what you think and
• 40:01
Speaker 10: what you know when you get in Sometimes there are
• 40:03
Speaker 10: two different things. But one thing I used to say,
• 40:05
Speaker 10: and I still do believe this, is that a mayor's
• 40:08
Speaker 10: job is not to bring you customers.
• 40:11
  Speaker 9: Right.
• 40:12
Speaker 10: I can't open or close your business. That's on you,
• 40:14
Speaker 10: private business owner. I believe that you know, as a
• 40:17
Speaker 10: daughter of a small business owner. It's on you to
• 40:19
Speaker 10: reinvent yourself, to watch the market and to keep up
• 40:22
Speaker 10: with things. That's you, that's not me. But my job
• 40:24
Speaker 10: is to make sure that there are more people in
• 40:27
Speaker 10: front of your business, walking to your business in the area.
• 40:30
Speaker 10: And I think that we have done an amazing job
• 40:32
Speaker 10: doing that in and around the Town Center Mall and
• 40:35
Speaker 10: will continue to do that. There is not a every
• 40:39
Speaker 10: couple of weeks we are on the phone with them.
• 40:41
Speaker 10: Over the past couple of weeks, we've been on the
• 40:42
Speaker 10: phone with them every single week to talk about so
• 40:46
Speaker 10: I still believe that, But I also believe the city
• 40:48
Speaker 10: does have a large role in what goes on. And
• 40:52
Speaker 10: so while we don't talk about it every single day,
• 40:54
Speaker 10: we're looking at what else can we do with especially
• 40:59
Speaker 10: this not just business owner, but the property itself and
• 41:04
Speaker 10: the properties around it. What makes the best use. I
• 41:06
Speaker 10: know people don't want to hear this. I hate hearing this.
• 41:09
Speaker 10: My husband, who used to drive from Jackson County to
• 41:11
Speaker 10: get his blue jeans and tennis shoes for school. You
• 41:14
Speaker 10: went to the Town Center Mall. Those models don't work
• 41:17
Speaker 10: any more. And people say, well, Barber's. You know, there's
• 41:20
Speaker 10: lots of things Barber's momo. It's a different type of setting.
• 41:24
Speaker 10: It just simply is it's not apples. It's not apples
• 41:27
Speaker 10: to apples. Do I think that there is room for retail,
• 41:30
Speaker 10: You better believe it. But I believe that there is
• 41:33
Speaker 10: room for improvement, massive improvement. You're talking about more than
• 41:38
Speaker 10: thirteen acres, Dave a little around thirteen acres of property,
• 41:43
Speaker 10: and so where we have to get to, and again
• 41:47
Speaker 10: these are long, hard conversations, is what can we be
• 41:50
Speaker 10: moving forward? You know, while listen, I would love to
• 41:54
Speaker 10: say put in a Dave and Busters. That's going to
• 41:56
Speaker 10: solve it, my friend, It is not. It's not going
• 41:58
Speaker 10: to one entity. Business is not going to solve a
• 42:02
Speaker 10: problem that is a national problem. Of the way we
• 42:06
Speaker 10: buy our goods right now is totally different, and so
• 42:10
Speaker 10: we have to reinvent ourselves. My parents have had a
• 42:13
Speaker 10: business for forty years. They've had to reinvent theirselves. How
• 42:16
Speaker 10: they sell things, what type of things they sell, what
• 42:19
Speaker 10: public is interested in buying, when and how are things
• 42:24
Speaker 10: that we are that we're trying to work with them
• 42:27
Speaker 10: on in the future. This is what I know. You know,
• 42:29
Speaker 10: the capital sports complex, our investment, our continued investment in
• 42:34
Speaker 10: the coliseum and convention Center, are reimagining of the municipal auditorium.
• 42:40
Speaker 10: Those are the things currently the Colosseum and Convention Center
• 42:44
Speaker 10: is the largest driver of economic development in the city
• 42:46
Speaker 10: of Charleston. It just simply is. We have another hotel
• 42:49
Speaker 10: coming in on the far side of the mall. Across
• 42:53
Speaker 10: the street, you've got PoCA Valley Bank being built. Oh,
• 42:56
Speaker 10: by the way, the street over a sixty million dollar
• 42:59
Speaker 10: TC Energy build. Development is happening and we're part of
• 43:03
  Speaker 10: those conversations.

Speaker 3: a Hilton brand hotel, another for a sports complex. Both
• 46:20
Speaker 3: remained vacant and no activity whatsoever. And you just mentioned
• 46:24
Speaker 3: the hotel again, when yeah.
• 46:25
Speaker 10: That's not Actually plans were the final plans for the
• 46:29
Speaker 10: hotel where I want to say two weeks ago, but
• 46:31
Speaker 10: I don't want to lie, so I'll say within the
• 46:33
Speaker 10: last seven to fourteen days those plans were submitted and
• 46:37
Speaker 10: we make progress on the Capitol Sports Complex every day.
• 46:40
Speaker 3: Dex says, reimagining is always a questionable speak. What do
• 46:43
Speaker 3: you mean specifically by reimagining the Municipal Auditorium.
• 46:47
Speaker 10: Well, I think there's a couple of things right now.
• 46:49
Speaker 10: We have a study out to see what is the
• 46:52
Speaker 10: viability of the outside shell structure. Everybody wants me to
• 46:56
Speaker 10: save the outside facade. Quite frankly, I would like that
• 47:00
Speaker 10: as well, but I need to see if we can
• 47:03
Speaker 10: do that. It is in such disrepair that I'm not
• 47:06
Speaker 10: sure that we can, and so I never want to
• 47:08
Speaker 10: give people false hope. So it's not really double speak.
• 47:10
Speaker 10: I'm really not trying to be cute or coy about it.
• 47:12
Speaker 10: I'm not sure what's going to happen. That's the real answer,
• 47:16
Speaker 10: and so we have to reimagine. It's kind of like
• 47:18
Speaker 10: the mall. We can't just think it's going to stay
• 47:21
Speaker 10: exactly the way that it's been. That's not that's just
• 47:25
Speaker 10: not reality. Everybody wants nineteen eighty five, yeah, I mean, yeah, yeah,
• 47:30
Speaker 10: eighty three one was you know, was launched. That probably
• 47:34
Speaker 10: will not be what the town Center Mall will be.
• 47:37
Speaker 10: Do I know exactly what it will be?
• 47:39
  Speaker 2: No?
• 47:39
Speaker 10: But will it be exactly what it is now? I
• 47:42
Speaker 10: could guarantee it probably will not be.

Speaker 3: I heard a little talk about Live on the Levee
• 48:00
Speaker 3: because I don't know about you, but I'm over winter
• 48:02
Speaker 3: completely and I'm already looking at this temperature and we're
• 48:05
Speaker 3: going to break records today form like seventy degree temperatures.
• 48:07
Speaker 3: I'm thinking about Live on the Levee. Just the future
• 48:09
Speaker 3: of Live on the Levee. Yeah, I've heard some stuff.
• 48:11
Speaker 10: Yeah, Live on the Levee is going to be in Charleston,
• 48:14
Speaker 10: West Virginia period as long as I'm mayor, We're going
• 48:16
Speaker 10: to have Live on the Levee. But just as we
• 48:18
Speaker 10: talk about right, reimagining, revisioning, we have something going on
• 48:22
Speaker 10: in the city of Charleston, several things every weekend. And
• 48:26
Speaker 10: what happens is you know that, while that's great, remember
• 48:30
Speaker 10: we have a team of city employees, streets, traffic, refuse, police, fire,
• 48:35
Speaker 10: We're stretching everybody so thin. So while Live on the Levee,
• 48:38
Speaker 10: just like fest of all, just like We'regatta, are all
• 48:41
Speaker 10: going to continue, and we just had a big meeting
• 48:44
Speaker 10: last week about all of these things. It may look
• 48:46
Speaker 10: a little different, may have every other week instead of
• 48:50
Speaker 10: every week, may have bigger bands, may have shorter sets,
• 48:54
Speaker 10: but it's going to be here. Live on the Levee
• 48:56
Speaker 10: is so great, just like Wegatta. It's a free, fun
• 49:00
Speaker 10: family event that's never going to change in this administration
• 49:03
Speaker 10: because we know how many people it draws. But we
• 49:06
Speaker 10: also know because we keep our eye on our numbers.
• 49:09
Speaker 10: In August, Live on the Levi's numbers are abysmal. Why
• 49:13
Speaker 10: because school started, football is started, and families are you know,
• 49:18
Speaker 10: wrapping up and getting back to you know, getting back
• 49:22
Speaker 10: to school. So we're taking a very close look at
• 49:25
Speaker 10: what does it look like this year. But we have submissions,
• 49:29
Speaker 10: you know, from bands from all over and we're really
• 49:31
Speaker 10: excited to uh to pick some really great bands this year.
• 49:34
Speaker 3: When when can we expect some announcements about entertainment for Regatta?
• 49:37
Speaker 10: I think the application process. I think it's still open.
• 49:40
Speaker 3: I mean, like you know, the the big big names.
• 49:43
Speaker 10: Yeah, gosh, you wiz soon. So I say soon, But
• 49:48
Speaker 10: you know, I never liked it ready. You know this day.
• 49:50
Speaker 10: If I give somebody a day and I'll make that
• 49:52
Speaker 10: day on the deadline, then it. She promised this and
• 49:55
Speaker 10: she didn't come through. So you know this is what
• 49:59
  Speaker 10: I I do. Know we're thoughtful, and I say we
• 50:02
Speaker 10: I'm not on that committee. By the way, we're thoughtful.
• 50:06
Speaker 10: We want to make sure that we get a lot
• 50:08
Speaker 10: of folks to come people, and by the way, we
• 50:10
Speaker 10: pay attention. People love a tribute band, man, they love
• 50:14
Speaker 10: a tribute band. And so we're going to look at
• 50:17
Speaker 10: what we have and the folks that submitted, and the
• 50:21
Speaker 10: committee will pick the committee in which I am not
• 50:24
  Speaker 10: give me.
• 50:24
Speaker 3: About a minute or so on this. I mentioned the
• 50:26
Speaker 3: weather and I don't care what punksa tany field of
• 50:29
  Speaker 3: French creek.
• 50:30
  Speaker 4: Freddy said.
• 50:31
Speaker 3: Winter is not over yet. Weather watchers are kind of
• 50:34
Speaker 3: keeping an eye on a very active winter weather pattern
• 50:37
Speaker 3: starting probably next week. Where's the city on things like
• 50:40
Speaker 3: equipment for snow removal, salt things of that nature.
• 50:43
Speaker 10: It's such a great question, So I'll go ahead and
• 50:46
Speaker 10: say this, thanks to everybody for your patients. We've not
• 50:48
Speaker 10: seen a snow like that and especially ice like that. Dave,
• 50:51
Speaker 10: in a very long period of time. By the way,
• 50:53
Speaker 10: our guys were out killing it, twenty four hour shifts,
• 50:56
Speaker 10: trying to take naps. We had blades that broke. We
• 50:59
Speaker 10: had trucks just like cars, slide off the sides of hills. Fortunately,
• 51:03
Speaker 10: thank goodness, no one was injured. But just as we
• 51:06
Speaker 10: have a delay, then we have to go back to
• 51:09
Speaker 10: the shop. We have to fix the blades. You know,
• 51:11
Speaker 10: make sure that our folks are well rested. Remember also, Charleston,
• 51:15
Speaker 10: West Virginia is thirty three square miles, and so our
• 51:19
Speaker 10: folks take care of you know, when I hear say, oh,
• 51:21
Speaker 10: they did such a better job, and we've got the
• 51:23
Speaker 10: largest amount to cover in the hills and valleys. We
• 51:26
Speaker 10: have opped our salt inventory for sure, because we believe.
• 51:31
Speaker 10: Thanks so much Mother Nature, she's coming back at us
• 51:35
Speaker 10: and making sure that our equipment is ready to go.
• 51:38
Speaker 3: Let me give you this stop sign, says a Textra
• 51:41
Speaker 3: stop sign at waystside drive is knocked down. So make
• 51:43
Speaker 3: it so American, all right, Yeah, make make a no
• 51:46
  Speaker 3: of that.
• 51:46
Speaker 10: Thank you so much, appreciate.
