- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at FindingGodAtWork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is divine disappointments facing pain
- 0:31and sorrow at work.
- 0:32And today, we're going to talk about the
- 0:34disappointment of getting laid off or fired from
- 0:37your job.
- 0:38And if that's happened to you recently, I'm
- 0:40really sorry, it just sucks.
- 0:43It sucks to lose your job, whether it
- 0:45was because your position was eliminated, or maybe
- 0:48even related to your job performance in some
- 0:50way, it's still just really hard to suddenly
- 0:52be in that position where instead of having
- 0:54a job, you're unemployed or underemployed, and having
- 0:57to figure out what's next.
- 0:59And just a word to the wise here,
- 1:02if you have a friend who has lost
- 1:03their job, before trying to reassure them of
- 1:06any great spiritual idea, right, just remember Romans
- 1:0912, 12, rejoice with those who rejoice, mourn
- 1:11with those who mourn, right, just mourn with
- 1:14them, just be empathetically present to their disappointment
- 1:16in that moment.
- 1:17Most people, they don't need a theological lecture
- 1:20or even direct spiritual encouragement in terms of
- 1:24advice about how this is going to work
- 1:26out on the day or the week or
- 1:29the month that they've lost their job.
- 1:30They just need people to be with them,
- 1:32empathize with them, mourn with those who mourn.
- 1:35Okay, but in this episode, we are going
- 1:38to talk about the spiritual dynamics, because that's
- 1:40what the episode is for.
- 1:41And hopefully, consuming it on a podcast is
- 1:43more helpful than hearing it from a friend
- 1:45when you're in that place of just needing
- 1:47empathy.
- 1:48But I am sorry, if that's your experience
- 1:51any time recently, that's really hard.
- 1:54And as it happens, I wasn't planning this
- 1:55at all.
- 1:56But actually, just today, before recording this episode,
- 1:58I got texted by a friend who had
- 1:59just lost his job.
- 2:00And so thinking about you specifically, friend, and
- 2:03for all of us, and I've been there,
- 2:06too, I've been in a place where I've
- 2:08unexpectedly lost my job and had to deal
- 2:11with the fallout and the consequences.
- 2:13So in order to kind of situate our
- 2:16contemporary experience of losing a job in the
- 2:21scriptural witness, I want to look at a
- 2:22couple Old Testament passages from the wisdom literature
- 2:25to kind of help us think about how
- 2:28do we make sense of having lost a
- 2:29job in terms of whose fault it is
- 2:32and what that means.
- 2:33And I want to look at the New
- 2:34Testament in terms of what are the spiritual
- 2:36opportunities that are present even in the disappointment
- 2:39of losing a job.
- 2:41Okay, so first to the wisdom literature, Proverbs.
- 2:45So, you know, when you lose a job,
- 2:48especially if you got fired, rather than laid
- 2:50off, it's easy to think it's my fault.
- 2:54It's easy to think, wow, if I had
- 2:56done better at my job, maybe I would
- 2:58still have my job.
- 2:59And that's not an entirely illogical thing to
- 3:02think.
- 3:02And it's also not an entirely unbiblical thing
- 3:04to think.
- 3:04So Proverbs 22 verse 29 says, do you
- 3:08see someone skilled in their work?
- 3:09They will serve before kings.
- 3:11They will not serve before officials of low
- 3:13rank.
- 3:14In other words, being good at your job
- 3:16is good for job security and good for
- 3:19your job trajectory.
- 3:21And so there is the possibility, right, to
- 3:23be frank, we have to consider the possibility
- 3:25that sometimes people lose their jobs because they're
- 3:27bad at them.
- 3:28Right.
- 3:29And that's not always the case, right?
- 3:31But sometimes it is the case.
- 3:33And so we'll come back to that.
- 3:34How do we think through that, if that's
- 3:37the case?
- 3:37But there's a flip side here also in
- 3:38the wisdom literature, really important to contextualize our
- 3:41experience in light of this reality as well.
- 3:45So this is from Ecclesiastes.
- 3:46Again, last episode, we looked at Ecclesiastes.
- 3:49This is Ecclesiastes chapter nine, starting in verse
- 3:5111.
- 3:53I have seen something else under the sun.
- 3:55The race is not to the swift or
- 3:57the battle to the strong, nor does food
- 3:59come to the wise or wealth to the
- 4:01brilliant or favor to the learned, but time
- 4:04and chance happened to them all.
- 4:06Moreover, no one knows when their hour will
- 4:08come as fish are caught in a cruel
- 4:10net or birds are taken in a snare.
- 4:13So people are trapped by evil times that
- 4:15fall unexpectedly upon them.
- 4:19Okay.
- 4:20So this is the flip side.
- 4:21If the Proverbs passage suggests that being good
- 4:24at your job is generally helpful for your
- 4:27job security and your career trajectory, then what
- 4:30Ecclesiastes says is, but the universe is not
- 4:33a simple meritocracy.
- 4:35It's not like the people who are hardworking
- 4:37or smart or strong always get ahead time
- 4:39and chance happened to them all.
- 4:41There are random events beyond our control that
- 4:44can affect us very profoundly.
- 4:47Uh, in that final phrase, people are trapped
- 4:49by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them.
- 4:52There is chaos in the universe.
- 4:54Sometimes you lose your job and it's not
- 4:55your fault at all, even when you are
- 4:57fired.
- 4:59Okay.
- 5:00So these are, these are the, the kind
- 5:01of two points that are intentioned with each
- 5:03other in the wisdom literature.
- 5:04And I think that this is really helpful
- 5:06for us thinking about whose fault it is
- 5:09when you lose a job, right?
- 5:11On the one hand, at the most extreme,
- 5:13uh, side, you could say, well, if you
- 5:15got fired, it's your fault.
- 5:17Right.
- 5:17And that, that could be true.
- 5:19And, and let's be honest, we've probably had
- 5:21friends and coworkers like that where, where that's
- 5:23kind of the situation that happened.
- 5:24And we know it's what happened.
- 5:26Maybe even you you've experienced this yourself.
- 5:28Uh, I have had the situation where I
- 5:30got the news that a co-worker was
- 5:31fired and I breathed a sigh of relief.
- 5:33Right.
- 5:34Not because I don't care about them as
- 5:35a person, but because they were not a
- 5:37good fit for their job.
- 5:39And now we'll have the chance to get
- 5:40someone who is a good fit for their
- 5:41job.
- 5:41And all the frustrations and problems that emanated
- 5:44from them, not being a good fit at
- 5:45their job will hopefully become a thing of
- 5:47the past.
- 5:48Right.
- 5:48So that's one extreme is totally your fault.
- 5:51The other extreme is it's totally not your
- 5:53fault.
- 5:53Your, your boss made an unjust call or
- 5:55in the case of being laid off rather
- 5:56than fired, right?
- 5:57It was a, it was a market dynamic
- 5:59totally beyond your control.
- 6:01Right.
- 6:01And there's no responsibility that you can have
- 6:04for it at all.
- 6:06Well, in the reality of the world, if
- 6:08the wisdom literature is giving us these two
- 6:09points of tension, isn't the truth probably somewhere
- 6:12in between most of the time?
- 6:14Like if you got fired, you probably bear
- 6:17some responsibility for that yourself.
- 6:19Even if your work situation and your boss
- 6:22wasn't perfect, right?
- 6:23Similarly, even if you got laid off, right?
- 6:26And there are circumstances beyond your control, right?
- 6:28None of us are perfect at our jobs.
- 6:30And so there is a question there, even
- 6:32if we were laid off rather than fired
- 6:33of like, Oh, wow, did I do anything
- 6:35to contribute to this circumstance?
- 6:38So the truth is somewhere in the middle.
- 6:40And, and that leads me to the first
- 6:42of our kind of ways of thinking about
- 6:43this from the new Testament.
- 6:46So Romans chapter 12, same, uh, where we
- 6:48got our verse, uh, on empathy, verse 12,
- 6:5112.
- 6:52Now I want to go to verse 12,
- 6:53three, uh, which says this.
- 6:56For by the grace given me, I say
- 6:57to every one of you, do not think
- 6:59of yourself more highly than you ought, but
- 7:01rather think of yourself with sober judgment and
- 7:04accordance with the faith God has distributed to
- 7:06each of you.
- 7:08Think of yourself with sober judgment.
- 7:11So that's the, that's the first word from
- 7:13the new Testament about the spiritual opportunity when
- 7:16you've lost a job is there is an
- 7:17opportunity for self-examination.
- 7:21Self-examination is a classic Christian phrase.
- 7:24It's really important.
- 7:25Uh, it's a practice, uh, that can, can
- 7:28be, uh, kind of habitualized through practices like
- 7:31doing an examine, um, an examine of conscience,
- 7:33which we've talked about in other episodes.
- 7:35We kind of reflect on your day or
- 7:37reflect on a period of time in your
- 7:38life and see how God was working and
- 7:41how you were responding to how God was
- 7:42working.
- 7:43Self-examination is utterly critical for the Christian
- 7:46life.
- 7:46We can't do without it.
- 7:48And Paul here commends it in terms of,
- 7:50you know, as God gives you faith, so
- 7:53do it.
- 7:53We need faith in order to do self
- 7:55-examination.
- 7:55We need to have a sense that God
- 7:56is at work as we reflect on our
- 7:58lives.
- 7:59So that's the first opportunity, whether you were
- 8:00fired or whether you were laid off, the
- 8:02spiritual opportunity here is for self-examination to
- 8:05reflect what, if anything, can I take responsibility
- 8:09for about what happened.
- 8:12So just personal testimony from me here.
- 8:14Uh, I was laid off from my job
- 8:16at the mortgage company a few years ago.
- 8:18Um, and the mortgage industry is a very
- 8:20rate sensitive market sensitive industry.
- 8:23Right?
- 8:23So the, the interest rates for mortgages are
- 8:26determined by a variety of factors.
- 8:27Some of what the federal reserve does, some
- 8:30of what private investors do.
- 8:31Uh, but it's not something that's like any,
- 8:34under any one person's direct control.
- 8:36And so when interest rates tend to fall,
- 8:39mortgage companies do more business.
- 8:41And when interest rates tend to rise, mortgage
- 8:43companies do less business.
- 8:46And so I was hired in a low
- 8:47interest rate season, and then I was laid
- 8:49off as interest rates were skyrocketing a couple
- 8:52of years later.
- 8:53And I was laid off and I think
- 8:55like the third of five or six rounds
- 8:56of layoffs that happened at the company, my
- 8:59entire team was eliminated.
- 9:00The whole department was eliminated the day that
- 9:01I was laid off.
- 9:03And so I felt pretty good about like,
- 9:05okay, this seems to be like a time
- 9:07and chance happens to them all, right?
- 9:08This is a, um, uh, unexpected, uh, evil
- 9:12falling upon me, uh, like the Ecclesiastes said,
- 9:15this was not primarily about my work performance.
- 9:18So that, that, that was tending to me
- 9:20more how I framed it.
- 9:22And, you know, my, my boss in the
- 9:24layoff conversation even said that, like, this doesn't
- 9:26have to do with your work performance.
- 9:27So all the more reason for me to
- 9:28think that, however, I noticed an emotional reaction
- 9:32because I know, noticed that some of my
- 9:35coworkers had not gotten laid off, right, that
- 9:38not in my direct team, but people on
- 9:39some other teams, but still kept their jobs.
- 9:41And I thought, man, if I had been
- 9:43a more valuable contributor, could I have somehow
- 9:46kept my job where they have found a
- 9:47different role for me rather than laying me
- 9:49off when the, when the team was eliminated,
- 9:51right?
- 9:52And so, uh, that question kind of was
- 9:54raised for me.
- 9:55Now that could be a really unhealthy question.
- 9:57A kind of, a kind of self accusation,
- 10:00assuming something's your fault when it's not necessarily
- 10:01so.
- 10:02But I think in the spiritual opportunity that
- 10:04Paul commenced us here of self-examination, it
- 10:07did give me a chance to reflect like,
- 10:08what do I want to do differently at
- 10:09my next job?
- 10:10What do I want to give at my
- 10:12next job that maybe I wasn't giving at
- 10:14this job?
- 10:14Or conversely, maybe what boundaries do I want
- 10:17to set at my next job that I
- 10:18wasn't setting at this job?
- 10:20So, so again, if the truth is we
- 10:22probably bear some responsibility, even in those situations
- 10:25that are often beyond our control, there's an
- 10:30opportunity for self-examination.
- 10:31Okay.
- 10:31That's a, that's our first thing.
- 10:33The second thing, uh, so Paul mentioned, you
- 10:35know, it takes faith to, to do self
- 10:37-examination, it also takes faith to just ride
- 10:40out the uncertainty of unemployment, right?
- 10:42So here I want to go to Matthew
- 10:44chapter five, where Jesus speaks about anxiety and
- 10:47worry.
- 10:49So this is starting in verse 25.
- 10:52Therefore I tell you, do not worry about
- 10:56your life, what you will eat or drink,
- 10:58or about your body, what you will wear.
- 11:00Is not life more than food and the
- 11:02body more than clothes?
- 11:04Look at the birds of the air.
- 11:05They do not sow or reap or store
- 11:07away in barns, and yet your heavenly father
- 11:09feeds them.
- 11:11Are you not much more valuable than they?
- 11:13Can any of you by worrying at a
- 11:15single hour to your life?
- 11:18Now, Jesus is talking about the birds of
- 11:19the air who do not sow or reap
- 11:21or store away in barns.
- 11:23In other words, who do not work because
- 11:25he knows that there's a relationship between our
- 11:27worry and our work, right?
- 11:28He's saying when, when you're worried about financial
- 11:31circumstances, when you're worried about having enough food
- 11:33to eat or enough clothes to wear, you're
- 11:35thinking about all the work you have to
- 11:36do to be okay.
- 11:37But he's like, look at the birds.
- 11:38They don't work.
- 11:39They don't sow.
- 11:40They don't reap.
- 11:40They don't store away in barns.
- 11:41And God still feeds them.
- 11:44And God cares way more about you than
- 11:46he cares about the birds.
- 11:48So as you enter into a season of
- 11:50unemployment or underemployment after losing a job, there's
- 11:53a word there that God cares about you,
- 11:55even when you can't work, even when you
- 11:57can't contribute to your own financial wellbeing the
- 11:59same way that you do when you're getting
- 12:00a regular paycheck day in, day out.
- 12:03God cares for you.
- 12:04You don't need to worry.
- 12:07That takes faith to receive that word from
- 12:09the Lord.
- 12:09It is hard and the physiological response of
- 12:12having a measure of stress, having measure anxiety
- 12:14is unavoidable.
- 12:15That's, that's something that will happen.
- 12:17But as we bring that experience to God,
- 12:19we ask him to strengthen our faith.
- 12:21We can experience the freedom of knowing ultimately
- 12:24God provides for me.
- 12:26I, I get to participate in that by,
- 12:27by doing my work when I have a
- 12:29job.
- 12:29But just because I don't have a job
- 12:31right now, that hasn't changed God's attitude about
- 12:33me at all.
- 12:34He will still provide for me.
- 12:35He will still provide for my loved ones.
- 12:37And I've seen that come true in my
- 12:39life and the lives of many other people,
- 12:41uh, despite many unpredictable circumstances, um, following losses
- 12:44of jobs.
- 12:46And that brings me to our third thing,
- 12:48as we think about God's attitude towards us
- 12:51as it relates to our work.
- 12:53So I want to go to another passage
- 12:54in the gospels.
- 12:55This is the conclusion of what's often called
- 12:57the parable of the prodigal son.
- 12:59Right.
- 12:59And you've got the two different brothers, one
- 13:01of whom leaves, makes very poor life decisions,
- 13:03parties, loses all his money, then comes back
- 13:05home.
- 13:06The other one who was working away the
- 13:08whole time, working faithfully in the fields and
- 13:10that, that older brother who was working the
- 13:12whole time, he's not so pleased about how
- 13:15things turn out.
- 13:15So this is Luke chapter 15, starting in
- 13:17verse 28.
- 13:19The older brother became angry and refused to
- 13:21go in.
- 13:22So his father went out and pleaded with
- 13:24him, but he answered his father, look, all
- 13:27these years I've been slaving for you and
- 13:28never disobeyed your orders.
- 13:30Yet you never gave me even a young
- 13:32goat.
- 13:32So I could celebrate with my friends.
- 13:34But when this son of yours has squandered
- 13:36your property with prostitutes, comes home, you kill
- 13:39the fattened calf for him.
- 13:41My son, the father said, you are always
- 13:44with me and everything I have is yours.
- 13:47But we had to celebrate and be glad
- 13:49because this brother of yours was dead and
- 13:52is alive again, he was lost and is
- 13:55found.
- 13:57You see the attitude of the father towards
- 14:00the two sons.
- 14:01One son has been working hard.
- 14:02The other son has not, but he loves
- 14:05them both.
- 14:06He says this brother of yours was lost
- 14:08and is found, was dead and is alive
- 14:11again.
- 14:12He deeply loves the prodigal son just as
- 14:15much as the son who was working hard.
- 14:18Okay.
- 14:18What does that mean for you when you've
- 14:19lost a job?
- 14:20God loves you deeply, just as much when
- 14:22you can't work, when you've lost your job,
- 14:24when you're unemployed, when you're underemployed, as when
- 14:26you're being a highly productive working person, God's
- 14:29attitude towards you has not changed at all.
- 14:31God is still for you.
- 14:33God still loves you.
- 14:35And so this distressing time of losing a
- 14:38job is ironically an opportunity to enter more
- 14:41deeply into receiving God's love for you, right?
- 14:45To know that God loves you just as
- 14:47much right now as he did on your
- 14:49most productive day ever.
- 14:51That's one way that God can use a
- 14:53season like this to deepen your faith, to
- 14:56deepen your experience of his love, to help
- 14:58you grow in self-examination, and then to
- 15:01move on to whatever's next.
- 15:05Lord Jesus, thank you that you were faithful
- 15:07to us in the ups and downs.
- 15:09We do pray for your mercy on anyone
- 15:11who's lost a job recently.
- 15:13You administer your compassion and your hope to
- 15:15them.
- 15:16We also pray that you give all of
- 15:18us when we face these kind of circumstances,
- 15:20the courage to exercise faith, to trust in
- 15:24your providence, to appropriately examine ourselves, and also
- 15:29to experience your love more deeply.
- 15:31Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 15:33do our work with you.
- 15:39Thanks for listening.
