- 0:05Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overland Journal podcast. I'm your
- 0:08Speaker 1: host Ashley Jordano, and today I'm joined by Herman and
- 0:12Speaker 1: Cala daria Zapp who spent twenty two years driving around
- 0:16Speaker 1: the world in a nineteen twenty eight grand page car.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Thank you so much for joining me all the way
- 0:21Speaker 1: from Brazil.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Thank you, Ashley, thank you. We are happy to share.
- 0:27Speaker 2: We are very happy to share.
- 0:30Speaker 1: So what are you guys up to now, because you've
- 0:33Speaker 1: been home for a little while.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Right, Yes, we arrive in twenty two in Argentina, where
- 0:39Speaker 2: it's our home, and since then we were building up
- 0:43Speaker 2: a play like a campaign to receive traveler hosted travelers
- 0:47Speaker 2: around the world. Many of them they come to visit
- 0:49Speaker 2: us and it's so lovely to have them to USh.
- 0:52Speaker 3: More homes and well then we're doing events for for travelers, Yeah,
- 0:58Speaker 3: to inspire the people to go for their own dreams
- 1:02Speaker 3: if they want to travel and all that.
- 1:04Speaker 2: So, yeah, can you imagine someone after traveling so long
- 1:07Speaker 2: to be back in a business or in a shop
- 1:09Speaker 2: or in a workshop. It will be kind of hard,
- 1:13Speaker 2: and it's the best way we were able to stay
- 1:15Speaker 2: at home was stay in touch with travelers. So now
- 1:18Speaker 2: instead of going to the world, it won't come to us.
- 1:22Speaker 4: I love that so much. That is so awesome.
- 1:25Speaker 1: When did you have the idea to start this up
- 1:28Speaker 1: when you got home or before you got home?
- 1:30Speaker 2: A lot long alone before? I can't we go.
- 1:33Speaker 3: While we were traveling, we say it would be great
- 1:35Speaker 3: when we return back to Argentina to have our spot
- 1:38Speaker 3: for travelers, and because we really know what we need
- 1:43Speaker 3: when you are on the road. We were twenty two
- 1:47Speaker 3: years so we said it would be good. It would
- 1:50Speaker 3: be great to have the people, you know, to find
- 1:53Speaker 3: a mechanic or to find make paperwork.
- 1:56Speaker 5: So whatever do they need, or wash.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Their clothes, so many things that you yeah, we knew
- 2:02Speaker 2: what they were in. So here we are trying to
- 2:04Speaker 2: help them as much that weekend.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Which travelers do you see the most often? The Europeans? Brazilians?
- 2:13Speaker 2: Well mostly I think we are between Brazilians and Europeans mostly,
- 2:19Speaker 2: but we are receiving lately a lot of United States people.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Lately we are getting a lot of Germans, but German
- 2:24Speaker 2: and mostly are the most French. The French mostly they
- 2:28Speaker 2: come with family and kids.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Mostly yeah, Russia, we have one from Russia, but Luxembourg
- 2:35Speaker 3: in some weird countries from from Turkey with you have
- 2:38Speaker 3: we only have two years with it. It's so nice
- 2:40Speaker 3: because when they cross the gate, we have a very
- 2:43Speaker 3: big place, you know, where they can leave their car
- 2:46Speaker 3: storage and they go to visit Buenoside, the city from there.
- 2:50Speaker 5: And when we see them coming and we see.
- 2:53Speaker 3: That they are from France, from Turkey, from Russia, from Germany, Mexico,
- 2:59Speaker 3: and it is so nice that we know where they're
- 3:01Speaker 3: coming from because we've been there with their people. We
- 3:04Speaker 3: were eating their food, and we really know what they
- 3:08Speaker 3: we need.
- 3:08Speaker 4: So it's very nice, cool, very nice.
- 3:11Speaker 1: That's such a great idea and giving back to the
- 3:14Speaker 1: overlying community. And I love what you were saying about
- 3:17Speaker 1: being able to relate to the people coming in because
- 3:20Speaker 1: you've been to the countries where they're from.
- 3:22Speaker 4: So yeah, so so so great.
- 3:26Speaker 3: And you know, we have a sign there. We have
- 3:28Speaker 3: a sign that is the zero kilometer zero of the dreams.
- 3:33Speaker 3: So everybody take a picture with their Moro home in
- 3:36Speaker 3: the kilometer zero of dreams.
- 3:39Speaker 5: Because our journey, it was our journey, it was a dream.
- 3:44Speaker 5: So we have the.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Kilometers zero. Let's talk about your kilometer zero as well.
- 3:54Speaker 1: I want to go back in time and ask you
- 3:56Speaker 1: some questions about the car and the dream that you had.
- 3:59Speaker 1: So this nineteen twenty eight grand Page car you already own,
- 4:03Speaker 1: why did you decide to take it on this ultimate
- 4:07Speaker 1: twenty two year road trip.
- 4:09Speaker 2: No, we never thought about it, never thought it, and
- 4:11Speaker 2: we only got it three months before we started the journey.
- 4:14Speaker 2: And we already have decided the day of starting the
- 4:17Speaker 2: journey long before and the car show up. We were
- 4:19Speaker 2: not looking for any kind of car because for us,
- 4:22Speaker 2: we were always backpackers and the idea to go with
- 4:25Speaker 2: car was like, it's gonna be a problem, custom breakdown parts.
- 4:31Speaker 2: So we never thought about going in a car. But
- 4:33Speaker 2: someone offered me a vintage car. I read a well,
- 4:35Speaker 2: I kind of friend, kind of a friend who offered
- 4:37Speaker 2: me a car. I said, no, I'm going to alask
- 4:39Speaker 2: a backpack and I don't need a car now. And
- 4:43Speaker 2: of course I don't need a vintage. I never was
- 4:45Speaker 2: into cars. I never went to see a car show.
- 4:47Speaker 2: And he has we come to see and maybe you
- 4:49Speaker 2: will know someone who will love to have a car
- 4:52Speaker 2: like this one. I was curious. It wasn't my way
- 4:55Speaker 2: where I was going to, so I said, let's go
- 4:57Speaker 2: and take a look, and I followed out. I saw
- 5:01Speaker 2: it and I felt that I had to go out
- 5:04Speaker 2: with a guy. I didn't even call Candy and I
- 5:06Speaker 2: didn't ask her. I bought it right there in the spot,
- 5:09Speaker 2: and I said, what.
- 5:10Speaker 3: With this car, No way, we're gonna be all the
- 5:14Speaker 3: time in the mechanics shop.
- 5:16Speaker 5: We never never drove an old car.
- 5:18Speaker 2: You know, I'm not a mechanical at all. I don't
- 5:21Speaker 2: have no idea.
- 5:22Speaker 3: It has wooden spokes. Imagine you can't go. We were
- 5:26Speaker 3: going at fifty per hour, very very slow. And uh,
- 5:31Speaker 3: we said, oh, it's gonna break.
- 5:34Speaker 5: Down all the time.
- 5:35Speaker 2: She was right, she was right. We were always in
- 5:37Speaker 2: many workshops. We met so many beautiful mechanics. Only one
- 5:44Speaker 2: let us pay him we go. We almost forced him
- 5:46Speaker 2: to charge up because he was so so poor that
- 5:50Speaker 2: we you know, you need to come on get some
- 5:53Speaker 2: money for these two days of work in my car.
- 5:55Speaker 2: And uh, but everybody was so happy. Many times we
- 5:59Speaker 2: say thank god the car broke down, otherwise we wouldn't
- 6:01Speaker 2: meet these people. Once in Zimbabwe, we went with the
- 6:06Speaker 2: car went through a river without bridge, so we were
- 6:10Speaker 2: through the water and I didn't know that I should
- 6:13Speaker 2: go with the engine that was cold. You should not
- 6:16Speaker 2: go with the water with your engine hot. And he
- 6:20Speaker 2: broke the engine. He cracked, and thank god he cracked
- 6:23Speaker 2: the engine because we were hosted in an orphanage with
- 6:26Speaker 2: seventy kids for two months as we were long freshing
- 6:30Speaker 2: my engine. And what my kids learned playing staying with
- 6:35Speaker 2: those seventy orphange kids, They learned so much about life,
- 6:38Speaker 2: about family, about friendship, about freedom because this kid could
- 6:42Speaker 2: not go out till they are eighteen from there, and
- 6:45Speaker 2: so many things. So at the end it was wonderful.
- 6:48Speaker 2: We even spent Christmas with them, So it was at
- 6:51Speaker 2: the end so wonderful that we broke the engine.
- 6:55Speaker 4: I think God journeys like this.
- 6:57Speaker 1: It's easy to get into this mode of like you
- 6:59Speaker 1: want to know kind of what's going on, and you
- 7:01Speaker 1: want to plan, and you want to have sort of
- 7:04Speaker 1: a semblance of feeling like you have control over what's happening.
- 7:08Speaker 1: And this is such a beautiful example of something that
- 7:12Speaker 1: you could have viewed as like this went wrong or
- 7:16Speaker 1: or whatever, but it actually led, which it often does
- 7:18Speaker 1: to another experience.
- 7:21Speaker 2: So yeah, it was always always like that. So at
- 7:24Speaker 2: the end we were like, okay, the cover broke down. Okay,
- 7:27Speaker 2: what is coming? What is the surprise of the day
- 7:30Speaker 2: because it covered down, Well, we're not worried about the breakdown.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Our routine of the journey was to not have routine,
- 7:37Speaker 3: you know, actually, and each day was different all the time.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Variety is the space of life. They say, for sure,
- 7:48Speaker 1: I'm curious. What were some of your favorite things about
- 7:51Speaker 1: the vehicle?
- 7:53Speaker 2: My favorite thing, but the video was were first. It
- 7:55Speaker 2: was a huge surprise for us because before we left
- 7:58Speaker 2: and we told everyone were read as is our friend,
- 8:01Speaker 2: that we were going to go to Laka now with
- 8:03Speaker 2: this car, and everybody was laughing, like, come on, don't
- 8:07Speaker 2: be ridiculous. This car is not made to get you
- 8:10Speaker 2: fiftyilometers away from your home. So we had to stop
- 8:14Speaker 2: telling people that we were going to go with the car.
- 8:17Speaker 2: And when we started to go with the car the
- 8:20Speaker 2: first day, we were only able to do fifty kilometers.
- 8:23Speaker 2: As they told us. We got the car broke down.
- 8:25Speaker 2: We got into a little town and we asked for
- 8:28Speaker 2: a mechanics to check and he said, I'm not a carpenter,
- 8:31Speaker 2: I am a mechanic, and you're woody spoke as your
- 8:33Speaker 2: problem and the same god there was a blacksmith still
- 8:36Speaker 2: in town, very all blacksmiths with three siblings. He three brothers.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Right away they started to fix my will. I asked
- 8:45Speaker 2: them how to fix it in the futures and he
- 8:49Speaker 2: asked me, why where are you going with the car?
- 8:51Speaker 2: I said, oh, we're going for our dream. And I
- 8:53Speaker 2: told him that we were going to Alaska and he said, okay,
- 8:55Speaker 2: you should check what we're doing because you don't have
- 8:57Speaker 2: to do it many time for sure. And after we
- 9:00Speaker 2: fited the job, asking okay, how much will be this
- 9:02Speaker 2: and they said, oh, no, we are not going to
- 9:05Speaker 2: charge you. And I think went on, you told us
- 9:07Speaker 2: this is your dream. We want to be part of
- 9:09Speaker 2: your dream. So the most favorite part of our car
- 9:14Speaker 2: was that it was opening doors. Whenever we went, people
- 9:18Speaker 2: were smiling or were waving to us. She said she
- 9:21Speaker 2: felt like the you know, the prison on the carnival
- 9:24Speaker 2: going the queen in the was saying hello, I say,
- 9:26Speaker 2: I feel like the pope everyone.
- 9:29Speaker 3: And the favorite part of traveling with this kind of
- 9:32Speaker 3: car was like, you know, when we show up in
- 9:37Speaker 3: town or in the house or whatever, is that the
- 9:43Speaker 3: people didn't know what kind of people we were, right,
- 9:47Speaker 3: They didn't see us as you go with a very
- 9:50Speaker 3: big model home. You know, all prepare for everything, and
- 9:53Speaker 3: it's like they put you in a level that they said,
- 9:57Speaker 3: these people, you know, have a lot of money and
- 10:00Speaker 3: they have everything they need and all that, but this car,
- 10:04Speaker 3: you know, it was like or you didn't have enough
- 10:06Speaker 3: money to buy a.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Proper car or region, and they didn't know what kind
- 10:12Speaker 2: of people we were.
- 10:14Speaker 3: They didn't know what kind of religion we pray, They
- 10:17Speaker 3: didn't know which kind of neighborhood we are coming, so
- 10:21Speaker 3: they will put you in a you know, in a level.
- 10:24Speaker 5: In a class, social class.
- 10:26Speaker 3: They didn't know which kind of school our kids were going,
- 10:30Speaker 3: and they only host a family that it was accomplishing
- 10:35Speaker 3: their dream. This car was like something that they took
- 10:38Speaker 3: us from all the things that they can see if
- 10:43Speaker 3: they can host you or not, what kind of people
- 10:46Speaker 3: you are. You know, it's just well like so transparent.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Everything was so so simple. They host a dream and
- 10:54Speaker 3: that was for me, it was the best part of
- 10:56Speaker 3: traveling with this.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Kind of car.
- 10:59Speaker 1: I love that it's like such a big difference, just
- 11:02Speaker 1: even like to have windows rolled down, like if you're
- 11:06Speaker 1: in a vehicle that has windows that you could open
- 11:10Speaker 1: or close or you know, you're just kind of being open,
- 11:13Speaker 1: and I think that that's probably part of it, Like
- 11:15Speaker 1: you were saying, is they sensed your openness.
- 11:18Speaker 4: Yeah, what a cool, cool experience.
- 11:22Speaker 1: And along the way, so when you left, you didn't
- 11:24Speaker 1: have any kids, and then when you got back you
- 11:28Speaker 1: had four right different places.
- 11:32Speaker 4: So we were that journey.
- 11:34Speaker 5: But it wasn't the plan.
- 11:36Speaker 3: If I wouldn't know before I left that I was
- 11:39Speaker 3: gonna be twenty two years on the road that I
- 11:42Speaker 3: was running, I was gonna run out of money and
- 11:45Speaker 3: I have four children, maybe I would never start this journey.
- 11:49Speaker 2: You know.
- 11:50Speaker 3: It was like I was already afraid just thinking that
- 11:53Speaker 3: we were going from Argentina to Alaska in six months
- 11:56Speaker 3: and then we came back. That was our first plan
- 11:59Speaker 3: and have a child wents in Argentina. But if I
- 12:02Speaker 3: would it was with so many years at that moment,
- 12:06Speaker 3: So imagine if I would know all this big journey,
- 12:11Speaker 3: if around the world twenty two years, Oh, maybe I
- 12:15Speaker 3: will never leave my house.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Yeah, you would be so scared. THEDEO was just going
- 12:19Speaker 2: to Alaska in maybe six months, journey, return and be normal,
- 12:23Speaker 2: have kids and go on. But uh, with this car
- 12:28Speaker 2: as can you say. We were getting so many vications
- 12:31Speaker 2: because many people will get close. It will be assigned
- 12:34Speaker 2: that say, driving from Argentina to Alaska, people will come
- 12:38Speaker 2: and they will say, oh, you're making you're doing the
- 12:40Speaker 2: dream of my life. And then after talking a while,
- 12:43Speaker 2: they will ask us to go to their home, and
- 12:46Speaker 2: we will always say yes. And when we were in
- 12:48Speaker 2: their homes, it was after it took us so long,
- 12:52Speaker 2: and so we were so long in so many homes.
- 12:55Speaker 2: It took its like almost three years to get to Laka,
- 12:58Speaker 2: three years and nine months exactly to get to Alaska,
- 13:01Speaker 2: so a lot more than those six months will plan.
- 13:03Speaker 2: And after two years in the journey and six years
- 13:07Speaker 2: eight years already married, we asked, what about having a family,
- 13:11Speaker 2: making a family?
- 13:12Speaker 3: Yeah, because you know what our idea was to go
- 13:14Speaker 3: in six months after them back and have the children.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Maybe two and maybe we're gonna even have kids. Maybe
- 13:22Speaker 2: we are taking care, but we will never be able
- 13:25Speaker 2: to have kids.
- 13:26Speaker 3: And we have two dreams in our lives. One was
- 13:28Speaker 3: to travel and the other one was to have a
- 13:30Speaker 3: big family.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Seventeen family that was always really to have seven kid
- 13:34Speaker 2: When we were she was fourteen and I was sixteen.
- 13:36Speaker 2: We thirty dates. She was really and I met her
- 13:39Speaker 2: when she was eight. Imagine, so how long we were together.
- 13:43Speaker 2: And so imagine we say, okay, let's try to have kids.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Maybe maybe we are not it's not possible for us.
- 13:50Speaker 2: We should try. Next month, we were already pregnant. I said,
- 13:52Speaker 2: my god, what are we gonna do? We were so scared,
- 13:56Speaker 2: and we say, okay, this baby had to be born
- 13:58Speaker 2: in Alaska. And so we had to hurry up from
- 14:01Speaker 2: we were in what Mala when we got pregnant in
- 14:04Speaker 2: Belize with final and we said, okay, this baby, hat
- 14:06Speaker 2: you born in Alaska because it's not possible to travel
- 14:09Speaker 2: with kids, even with babies even worse, and he was
- 14:12Speaker 2: born in North Carolina. We got a red neck baby
- 14:15Speaker 2: with us. It was so wonderful because when we were
- 14:18Speaker 2: there we were with little money. But I said, you
- 14:21Speaker 2: can no worry. I was born in USA. The government
- 14:24Speaker 2: will help me. We applied for Medicare, but they told
- 14:27Speaker 2: me not because I was not a resident of the USA.
- 14:30Speaker 2: I was living in Arcentia. So we went to the
- 14:33Speaker 2: hospital and we are for help, and they said, well,
- 14:36Speaker 2: you will get the bill like everybody if you don't
- 14:39Speaker 2: have money. You had to go to medicare, but I
- 14:40Speaker 2: already went. They told me no, Well, I'm sorry, And
- 14:43Speaker 2: she has a huge cross in her chest like she
- 14:45Speaker 2: was so happy. I'm proud to Catholic or whatever religion
- 14:49Speaker 2: she was following. And uh, I asked her before I
- 14:51Speaker 2: left the office, what would you do if instead of
- 14:55Speaker 2: us asking for help to have a baby, it would
- 14:57Speaker 2: be Joseph and Mary asking YouTube help to have a baby.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Would you send them to the street like you're doing
- 15:02Speaker 2: with that? Oh? She said, oh, I'm sorry, I just
- 15:06Speaker 2: worked here. I said, okay, when you go to heaven
- 15:09Speaker 2: and some Peter will say no to you, and why
- 15:11Speaker 2: not he was said, Oh, I'm sorry, I shall work here.
- 15:14Speaker 2: But we went to the people. We went to the
- 15:17Speaker 2: lovely newspaper article come out and may how many thousands
- 15:21Speaker 2: of people came to help us. The doctor didn't charge you,
- 15:25Speaker 2: the arest, theodor, the patrician, all the nurse, everybody in
- 15:28Speaker 2: the hospital didn't want to charge us. So we only
- 15:31Speaker 2: paid the room, the hospitality room, right like a hotel.
- 15:35Speaker 2: And so many other people help with Roch fourteenth straya.
- 15:39Speaker 2: We said, we all have only one kid.
- 15:41Speaker 3: She was amazing, amazing and Pampa was born there in
- 15:45Speaker 3: North Carolina. Here right to Alaska, but walking, yes, he
- 15:49Speaker 3: never was born in Alaska. And then we returned back
- 15:52Speaker 3: to Argentina. My mom was with the cancer, and we said, okay,
- 15:57Speaker 3: let's go and follow all the way to Shuaya. I
- 16:00Speaker 3: been here my mom and here was born our second
- 16:03Speaker 3: boy in Argentina.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Then we shift the car to Miami and we did
- 16:08Speaker 2: a different road through USA and we crossed hold the whole.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Calea and Paloma was born in Vancouver Island, in an Aimo.
- 16:15Speaker 3: And then we went to Australia and wa Lavi was
- 16:18Speaker 3: born in Australia.
- 16:19Speaker 2: So instead of buying a year, we are making souven years.
- 16:22Speaker 2: It's much too much more. Yeah, but you had to
- 16:25Speaker 2: imagine that it was. You had to imagine that it
- 16:27Speaker 2: was a time that there was not Netflix. Now that
- 16:30Speaker 2: you have NEPHLIW, maybe you can take more.
- 16:32Speaker 3: Didn't have a phone he started right. It was in
- 16:37Speaker 3: the year two thousand when we started. We didn't have
- 16:40Speaker 3: a phone, We didn't have GPAs.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Okay, let's have yeah, so what do we do.
- 16:47Speaker 1: I'm wondering, like, what was the experience like of being
- 16:49Speaker 1: pregnant on the road.
- 16:52Speaker 3: It was very lovely. At the beginning. The first one,
- 16:55Speaker 3: I was very afraid. Of course, I wasn't with my mom.
- 16:59Speaker 3: It was in this internet that is nowadays that you
- 17:03Speaker 3: know so frequently you cannounce anything on the internet. We
- 17:08Speaker 3: didn't have the phone, as we say, and it was
- 17:11Speaker 3: really really I was really afraid for the first one.
- 17:14Speaker 3: But you know, I was with herman. We were both
- 17:17Speaker 3: of us enjoying every every second of the pregnancy. You know,
- 17:21Speaker 3: it's not like he was working and I was working.
- 17:24Speaker 3: And then we met at the home and I said
- 17:26Speaker 3: to him, oh, I felt a kick off the baby today.
- 17:29Speaker 2: You know.
- 17:30Speaker 3: We were sharing every every time everything, and I have
- 17:34Speaker 3: wonderful pregnances.
- 17:35Speaker 5: Wonderful and I have one, you know, the records, the
- 17:41Speaker 5: plain records files.
- 17:43Speaker 3: And then I was going like, I don't know, Mexico,
- 17:46Speaker 3: please doctor informed, how is the baby, how did you
- 17:51Speaker 3: see the baby? All the exams and tests that we made,
- 17:56Speaker 3: and all that for the next country, in the next,
- 17:58Speaker 3: the next doctor, in the next.
- 18:00Speaker 2: And yeah, I'm very down pretty in English, so everybody
- 18:02Speaker 2: can understand I was.
- 18:04Speaker 5: With all that ultra sound and everything.
- 18:07Speaker 3: It was like a phinnic record on Williams right. And
- 18:11Speaker 3: then I have two were born on hospitals, and then.
- 18:14Speaker 2: I have two born with midwife.
- 18:17Speaker 5: With midwife.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Canada was born with midwife, and then in Australia, the
- 18:24Speaker 3: WAA was born in the water.
- 18:27Speaker 5: You know, in the water. It was very nice. I
- 18:29Speaker 5: experienced every every.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Wow, what an incredible experience. Yeah, incredible, And then grew up. Yeah,
- 18:40Speaker 1: I watch them grow up along the way. And how
- 18:44Speaker 1: do you think the experience of traveling like in this
- 18:47Speaker 1: way formed who they are as people?
- 18:50Speaker 2: Oh, you should make a posca with them, you should
- 18:52Speaker 2: ask them, Yeah I should. Yeah, we're really Yeah, it
- 18:54Speaker 2: would be the best way to to to see Chester
- 18:57Speaker 2: straight from them what it was for them as ad other.
- 19:00Speaker 2: I can say that we give them the world, We
- 19:03Speaker 2: offer them the complete war. We didn't ever tell them
- 19:07Speaker 2: be careful with this kind of people. We were all
- 19:09Speaker 2: with every kind from extremely rich to extremely ploor, from
- 19:13Speaker 2: every kind of religion, from every kind of I don't
- 19:16Speaker 2: know citizenship, And no one can tell them be careful
- 19:19Speaker 2: with those people. Because we were with that. They took
- 19:22Speaker 2: care of us. They share their family, they're home with that.
- 19:25Speaker 2: So they feel like when they ask them once they's
- 19:28Speaker 2: the Tampa, where are you from? I don't know from
- 19:31Speaker 2: where I am from the world. They see the world
- 19:33Speaker 2: as the country and every country as a province or state.
- 19:38Speaker 2: They didn't see it like different part of their world
- 19:40Speaker 2: that they cannot go. They were there and they enjoy
- 19:43Speaker 2: it there like they are their own home. So there's
- 19:46Speaker 2: also solves and a way to work, to live, to build,
- 19:50Speaker 2: to pray, to sing, and they can totally it takes
- 19:54Speaker 2: so many different languages and can totally drive on the
- 19:56Speaker 2: left side or the right side. It's okay, there's no
- 20:00Speaker 2: wrong with that because they were in places that is
- 20:02Speaker 2: that the way okay, accepted. They took it there is
- 20:05Speaker 2: not like, oh no, this is not the way. So
- 20:07Speaker 2: they are such an open mind kids and they learned
- 20:09Speaker 2: to adapt every day to something new. You go. Mostly
- 20:13Speaker 2: we wear in so many different comps with different cultures.
- 20:15Speaker 2: We couldn't tell that gets don't it with your hands
- 20:18Speaker 2: because next country was all ital hand. We couldn't tell
- 20:21Speaker 2: them many things because in the next country will not work.
- 20:25Speaker 2: So we said, okay, let's see how it's here.
- 20:27Speaker 3: Yeah, and they can see how the people pray because
- 20:30Speaker 3: we were in we.
- 20:31Speaker 5: Were most Niams homes.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Most of the countries with India juice with in Africa,
- 20:38Speaker 3: Korean people, European and they were at their home and
- 20:44Speaker 3: they can see.
- 20:45Speaker 5: What they what the other kids play.
- 20:50Speaker 2: You know.
- 20:51Speaker 3: And also they sometimes in some countries they felt that
- 20:55Speaker 3: they weren't having so many toys because you know, all
- 20:58Speaker 3: these developed countries about United States, Canada, Australia, they have
- 21:02Speaker 3: even play rooms in the house only for playing.
- 21:06Speaker 5: With many toys.
- 21:07Speaker 3: And maybe in those countries they felt that they don't
- 21:10Speaker 3: have any toy. You know, they have two drawers with barbies,
- 21:14Speaker 3: legs or everything, but very few.
- 21:15Speaker 5: You know, we couldn't carry so much.
- 21:17Speaker 2: A little bark with books, yeah, a little box with books.
- 21:20Speaker 3: And then we were going to Africa, to India, to Asia,
- 21:24Speaker 3: and they felt that they have so many toys.
- 21:27Speaker 2: When those kids were looking that little drawer full of thoughts.
- 21:31Speaker 5: Yeah, so it is. And also it was a very
- 21:34Speaker 5: good learning that every time they want a new toy,
- 21:39Speaker 5: another toy that they are not using using it, they
- 21:43Speaker 5: have to give away. They had to give it to
- 21:44Speaker 5: another kid because there's no room for that new toy.
- 21:47Speaker 2: So if you want a new toy, which is the
- 21:49Speaker 2: old toy is going. If you want a new book,
- 21:51Speaker 2: which is the old book, is going that we cannot
- 21:54Speaker 2: take more and more and more. So for there was
- 21:56Speaker 2: a very good lesson that if you want something, maybe
- 21:59Speaker 2: you got to get s.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Yeah, really great lesson if there's only so much space,
- 22:05Speaker 1: And what a gift for other people to receive.
- 22:08Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, how old are they now? The kids?
- 22:11Speaker 2: Oh my godness, twenty three to old twenty one, eighteen,
- 22:17Speaker 2: my daughter Paloma, and then a few days my younger
- 22:20Speaker 2: will be seventeen.

- 23:52Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, Ye're so huge, amazing.
- 23:57Speaker 5: We are here in Brazil. We are what did they
- 24:00Speaker 5: and we are with all of them?
- 24:02Speaker 3: That is very very unique, No again, altogether traveling and
- 24:07Speaker 3: it's so nice.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Yeah, somebody learned us a motor home. The first time
- 24:11Speaker 2: we were traveling a motor home, and we even brought
- 24:14Speaker 2: a boyfriend and a girlfriend, so we had eight people
- 24:17Speaker 2: other rabbits in a motor home traveling around brod Cool.
- 24:20Speaker 4: That's great, and they have to back at home. What
- 24:25Speaker 4: are they doing back at home?
- 24:28Speaker 2: Well, the oldest one is doing if he was our
- 24:31Speaker 2: editor during the journey. He learned so much to edit
- 24:34Speaker 2: during the journey and he was uploading the videos. So
- 24:37Speaker 2: now what he dies he he that's what he does,
- 24:40Speaker 2: believing editing videos. And then my second son is doing
- 24:45Speaker 2: marketing and he wants to become a pilot, so he
- 24:47Speaker 2: already iss tarying for that. Then Paloma, he justished to
- 24:51Speaker 2: be a fly assistant. He finish high school.
- 24:54Speaker 5: She just finished that year.
- 24:56Speaker 3: She wish now she was staying here one year in
- 24:58Speaker 3: Brazil the because you know, for being a fly assistant
- 25:02Speaker 3: you need to work with people and all that.
- 25:07Speaker 5: So he's gonna work here for one year experience.
- 25:10Speaker 2: The youngest one is one more year to go in
- 25:12Speaker 2: high school and you want to do then go to
- 25:15Speaker 2: Australia where he was born, to check over there. And
- 25:18Speaker 2: he wanted to starty to be a hotel manager, to
- 25:21Speaker 2: be in those beautiful hotels in the Caribbean.
- 25:28Speaker 5: You want to be good, I can go for them.
- 25:32Speaker 2: You will have a fighter to take here.
- 25:38Speaker 4: I love it like this, Yeah, that's so fun.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Different contact them and you asked them all these questions.
- 25:46Speaker 1: I will yes, we should definitely definitely do that. Can
- 25:50Speaker 1: you tell me during the journey, like what your route was?
- 25:53Speaker 1: So you went from Argentine to Alaska and then you
- 25:56Speaker 1: mentioned shipping with Miami and Australia, but what was the
- 26:00Speaker 1: overall route that you took.
- 26:01Speaker 3: We started the year two thousand and we went down
- 26:06Speaker 3: went all the way to Alaska.
- 26:08Speaker 2: At first we went all the way by the east coast,
- 26:10Speaker 2: by the Pacific. In Equador, we built a raft, we
- 26:13Speaker 2: put the car on it, and from Ecuador we went
- 26:16Speaker 2: down the Amazon River with the car in a small
- 26:18Speaker 2: canoe to Manos. From there we went to Columbia, but Ustralia.
- 26:23Speaker 2: It was a really hard time in Colombia at that moment,
- 26:25Speaker 2: but it was so beautiful for us. She has only
- 26:29Speaker 2: wonderful memories.
- 26:30Speaker 5: Then we crossed the Panama and then we did.
- 26:33Speaker 2: We look for help. We went to the manager of
- 26:35Speaker 2: the port in Colombia in Tamata, Novalankia. We asked, we
- 26:40Speaker 2: asked for the manager and the manager said, yes, what
- 26:42Speaker 2: can I do for you? I said, we are Cadelinia, herman,
- 26:44Speaker 2: we are going for our drinks. Can you help us?
- 26:46Speaker 2: And he said, yeah, what can I do for you?
- 26:47Speaker 2: And I showed them a picture of the car. I said,
- 26:49Speaker 2: we need to cross this car to Panama, but we
- 26:51Speaker 2: don't have the money. We will help you, and he
- 26:54Speaker 2: found three companies who want to take us for free.
- 26:57Speaker 2: One of the company who we didn't choose. The owners said, well,
- 27:00Speaker 2: at least let me pay urban tickets, so we got
- 27:02Speaker 2: the airplane tickets to get to Panama. From there, we
- 27:05Speaker 2: drove all the way to the Princes of What Island
- 27:09Speaker 2: and then we did yeah, we did Route sixty six
- 27:13Speaker 2: down to la and then up to Alaska to prou
- 27:16Speaker 2: the Bay, and we were allowed to get you all
- 27:18Speaker 2: the way to prou Way and then they ship our
- 27:22Speaker 2: car back to Argentina, an old company. The owner say,
- 27:25Speaker 2: who was leaving service. He said, thank you for let
- 27:28Speaker 2: let me be part of your dream, because I didn't
- 27:30Speaker 2: go for my dream, but now I am part of
- 27:32Speaker 2: a dream. And he shipped the car all the way
- 27:34Speaker 2: for us to Argentina. From there, we.
- 27:36Speaker 3: Did all Argentina from north to south.
- 27:40Speaker 2: And we got baby born and while my mom.
- 27:42Speaker 3: Passed away, and that moment we we left.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Again to but before but before we ship it back
- 27:51Speaker 2: to Miami, we cut the car in half and we stretched.
- 27:56Speaker 2: We make it bigger because we knew we will have
- 27:58Speaker 2: more bases. We want to have more babies, so we
- 28:00Speaker 2: put another row of seats and we put a tent
- 28:04Speaker 2: on the roof because they kid were growing and they
- 28:06Speaker 2: were not able to sleep with us in the cabin,
- 28:09Speaker 2: so we put a tent on the roof. We shipped
- 28:12Speaker 2: to Miami, we went across Canada and from California we
- 28:16Speaker 2: shipped to Australia. We did all around Australia one exactly
- 28:21Speaker 2: took us three hundred and sixty five days, and we.
- 28:23Speaker 3: Went to New Zealand, and from New Zealand to Korea.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Japan, Philippines, then from many islands, shop something from one
- 28:32Speaker 2: islands to another. We went to Borneo Island, but we
- 28:35Speaker 2: were going through little wooden boats that they never took
- 28:39Speaker 2: a car before. We had to convene the owner. Note
- 28:42Speaker 2: had to do it, but also to do it for
- 28:44Speaker 2: free because we were not having the money enough to pay.
- 28:48Speaker 2: And uh, then we will put some time in front
- 28:50Speaker 2: of it the cabin of the pilot and he will
- 28:53Speaker 2: not be able to sleep to the front because the
- 28:55Speaker 2: car was in front of the cabin. And we went
- 28:58Speaker 2: to island in the Philippines and never carve before got
- 29:00Speaker 2: there and we came to Borneo.
- 29:03Speaker 3: Then we went to Indonesia, Malaysia and Sumatra Island, Singapore
- 29:10Speaker 3: and then continent again China, Nepal, India, and then from
- 29:20Speaker 3: India was shipped to South Africa and from there we
- 29:24Speaker 3: went all the.
- 29:25Speaker 5: Way to Kaira to Egypt.
- 29:26Speaker 3: It was amazing what halfs Africa in Africa really love it,
- 29:31Speaker 3: really love it. You know something that we like about
- 29:34Speaker 3: this car is that any picture you take the car
- 29:38Speaker 3: in Africa picture or in the avenue, in the avenue or.
- 29:44Speaker 5: In Glacier and any place, it's perfect.
- 29:48Speaker 2: It looks right. It looked right for a picture.
- 29:51Speaker 5: Yeah, we really love it.
- 29:53Speaker 3: And then we went to Israel, Jordan I'm from.
- 30:00Speaker 5: Yeah. We spent Christmas in Betvenham. It was beautiful, beautiful, fuss.
- 30:05Speaker 3: Then we went to as We couldn't go through Civa
- 30:08Speaker 3: and Levan and all.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Those because we were at the World War.
- 30:12Speaker 3: We shipped from Israel to Turkey, and then from Turkey
- 30:17Speaker 3: we went to Europe and went to the Arctic again.
- 30:21Speaker 5: In Europe, so we went twice to the artist was
- 30:24Speaker 5: very very.
- 30:25Speaker 2: And then from Europe we shipped it in a sailboat
- 30:28Speaker 2: that it was older than our car. Imagine a seaboat.
- 30:31Speaker 2: It was a cargo sheet sailing boat and we shipped
- 30:35Speaker 2: from Canaria Island all the way to the French Guiana
- 30:39Speaker 2: and we had to be part of the crew. Had
- 30:40Speaker 2: you helped you sell the boat?
- 30:42Speaker 5: That was amazing.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it was all original, the sails of the ropes,
- 30:46Speaker 2: they were all original from that time, like it was
- 30:48Speaker 2: no plastics one. And from friend Guiana we went up
- 30:52Speaker 2: to Surinam and from there all the way down through Brazil.
- 30:56Speaker 2: We were two years extra in Brazil as there was
- 30:59Speaker 2: the Then in March twenty twenty two we are write
- 31:04Speaker 2: the same spot that saw us living when we left
- 31:07Speaker 2: from Bonsari that he said nobody's in downtown and we
- 31:10Speaker 2: started from there and no one came to see us
- 31:12Speaker 2: to say goodbye. We invite everyone, but saying no way,
- 31:14Speaker 2: you're not gonna write nowhere, Why will you go? Why
- 31:17Speaker 2: we will go to say goodbye if you're not gonna
- 31:19Speaker 2: get nowhere. But now there were so many people waiting
- 31:22Speaker 2: for us, waiting for us, and you should see it.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Nothing to do with people who live like so afraid,
- 31:28Speaker 2: like in Panny with white faces, what we're gonna do?
- 31:32Speaker 2: What we were starting, and when we were arriving, we
- 31:35Speaker 2: saw that everything that went through we went through, it
- 31:38Speaker 2: was all organized that we all had to do. It
- 31:41Speaker 2: has to go. Every time we have economic problem or
- 31:44Speaker 2: babying or car breakdown or whatever it was, someone or
- 31:48Speaker 2: something there to be able to fix it for us.
- 31:52Speaker 2: So when you have a dream, the really really thing
- 31:54Speaker 2: is just go. Don't wait to be ready and prepare
- 31:59Speaker 2: for everything, because you will never be.
- 32:01Speaker 3: Who is ready for a dream. The world, the world
- 32:06Speaker 3: is ready for your dream always.
- 32:08Speaker 2: They love, they love to be part of journey. I'm
- 32:11Speaker 2: from sure in your journey from Canada to Buenos Aires,
- 32:15Speaker 2: your health. And he also has sold this story right
- 32:17Speaker 2: that every time something happened, also something good happen.
- 32:20Speaker 3: And you always live to take everything. You know, they
- 32:23Speaker 3: always think that you have to take everything just in
- 32:25Speaker 3: case this happened, just in case this, and you know
- 32:30Speaker 3: you can.
- 32:30Speaker 5: Find that in the world.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Don't take things around the world that the world already
- 32:37Speaker 2: have for you. And if you the more you go
- 32:39Speaker 2: with things, you are taking a chance of someone to
- 32:43Speaker 2: help you to give your hands because if you have
- 32:45Speaker 2: everything and anything like, you can't help me with some
- 32:47Speaker 2: You know, I don't need anything, thank you. No, you're
- 32:49Speaker 2: losing a chance to meet someone, to give him the
- 32:52Speaker 2: chance that he was part of a dream. So we
- 32:55Speaker 2: ask people to go small. The less you have, the
- 33:00Speaker 2: more chances you will have to meet more people.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Mm hmmm hmm. So good, so many gems of wisdom
- 33:08Speaker 1: and there.
- 33:10Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we we love it, We love it. But
- 33:12Speaker 2: the best part it was the party. We were most
- 33:15Speaker 2: afraid of people and then we find out that was well.
- 33:18Speaker 2: All our memories if we close eyes are people faces.
- 33:22Speaker 2: They are not beautiful landscape that we went through so
- 33:24Speaker 2: many and.
- 33:26Speaker 3: You know what, which was the best blessing in our journey.
- 33:31Speaker 3: It was to run out of money.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Believe it or not, everything changed, everything changed, everything was
- 33:37Speaker 2: for better. You know, when we were having we were
- 33:39Speaker 2: passing by. But when we run out of money, we
- 33:42Speaker 2: had to connect with people. Can they just have to
- 33:45Speaker 2: do water color painting?
- 33:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, I paint in my life, and you know,
- 33:49Speaker 3: we have to keep going in our dream.
- 33:51Speaker 5: So I learned to paint what colors.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Herman learned to frame it and never frame anything before
- 33:57Speaker 2: then we had.
- 33:58Speaker 5: To learn to sun them. We never something before.
- 34:01Speaker 2: We learned to speak English. We didn't know so much
- 34:03Speaker 2: English and so many other languages.
- 34:05Speaker 3: Then in Costa Rica we published our first book about
- 34:09Speaker 3: the journey.
- 34:10Speaker 5: That we never published books.
- 34:11Speaker 2: We never broke. You know what happened. We were in
- 34:14Speaker 2: Columbia and someone asked, how do you finand the journey?
- 34:18Speaker 2: Very common question, right, and we said, well with white
- 34:21Speaker 2: white paintings that I trained. But sometimes it's hard to
- 34:25Speaker 2: sell because there are people who want to help out,
- 34:26Speaker 2: but they cannot afford to buy a painting. We are
- 34:30Speaker 2: looking for something cheaper. And he said okay, and he
- 34:34Speaker 2: took some picture from our photo album and he came
- 34:37Speaker 2: back with five hundred postcards that he did with our
- 34:40Speaker 2: picture and it was perfect because we will tell you people,
- 34:45Speaker 2: if you buy me a postcard, you are buying me
- 34:47Speaker 2: a leader of gasoline to keep going. And people love it.
- 34:50Speaker 2: And there he also made some note books with so
- 34:53Speaker 2: many white patries inside, with the same picture of the postcard.
- 34:56Speaker 2: And when I gave it to the people, they said,
- 34:58Speaker 2: but I was looking to read about your journey. No
- 35:00Speaker 2: white tastes. No, it's for you to write your dream.
- 35:03Speaker 2: No no, I want you to read about your journey and
- 35:05Speaker 2: say why not? Why not? And we started to write
- 35:07Speaker 2: it and we got to Costa Rica and you know
- 35:10Speaker 2: those things that happens, and Basso said, I have no
- 35:13Speaker 2: idea where you can print your book, but you must
- 35:15Speaker 2: print your book because in five days it is a
- 35:17Speaker 2: book international book fair here in Costa Rica, and the
- 35:22Speaker 2: guest of honor this year is Argentina. So I have
- 35:24Speaker 2: a room to put you in the fir with your card,
- 35:27Speaker 2: your book, so go and print it.
- 35:30Speaker 5: And we published our first book there Costa Rica. Spark
- 35:34Speaker 5: your dream. We have an incredible Yeah, it's a great
- 35:38Speaker 5: it's a great one.
- 35:39Speaker 3: Now we have four books and we will write more books.
- 35:43Speaker 2: But we had to print in many different languages, right
- 35:45Speaker 2: because we were traveling. You had to print in some
- 35:49Speaker 2: other language. So we were able to financial journey through there.
- 35:51Speaker 2: I mean there was no Ia in that time, so
- 35:54Speaker 2: we had to find people who read it, translated and
- 35:57Speaker 2: print it. So now it's my sicians. It would be
- 35:59Speaker 2: in a click. We will try a little books in
- 36:01Speaker 2: any language and then.
- 36:02Speaker 3: You ship also the books wherever we were, you know,
- 36:05Speaker 3: in the middle of nowhere, actually see books because we
- 36:09Speaker 3: were sending those books to keep going, not to pay
- 36:11Speaker 3: their patrol, and many tuffs of the journey, and uh.
- 36:15Speaker 5: It was always a logistic a lot of it.
- 36:18Speaker 2: It's amazing how many things you can do, you really,
- 36:20Speaker 2: how incredible you are. You can be a uh you know, artisan,
- 36:25Speaker 2: You can be a mechanic, you can be a troubler,
- 36:28Speaker 2: you can be an adventure you can be a diplomatic, you
- 36:30Speaker 2: can be a seller. You reator you can teacher.
- 36:35Speaker 5: I was a teacher.
- 36:36Speaker 2: And you can be a give a speech in different
- 36:39Speaker 2: languages and sing like wow. And you never thought that
- 36:43Speaker 2: you would be able to go through Thettlantic or down
- 36:45Speaker 2: the Amazon or so many islands the Pacific, or you
- 36:48Speaker 2: meet like Mashie or the Pope. How can how will
- 36:51Speaker 2: you be meeting like people like that? Or so many
- 36:54Speaker 2: things like wow? But the disagrees. Just go. The war
- 36:58Speaker 2: is waiting.
- 37:00Speaker 4: Just go. Yeah, very good advice.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Just go.
- 37:04Speaker 1: You probably will never be ready, so you may as
- 37:06Speaker 1: well just hat out. And I like what you're saying
- 37:10Speaker 1: because it's like you had to be resourceful and take
- 37:14Speaker 1: one day at a time and learn new skills. And
- 37:17Speaker 1: I think now it's easier than ever to be able
- 37:20Speaker 1: to sort of pivot and change jobs or develop new
- 37:25Speaker 1: skills so that you can do these things on the road.
- 37:27Speaker 1: And you as your testament to that because you're doing it.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Before we had online work pretty much right. Yeah, there's
- 37:34Speaker 1: so yeah, it's it's you can do it.
- 37:37Speaker 2: It's so much better. It's so much better, better, better, better,
- 37:41Speaker 2: because you have this fond that relate whatever conversation you have.
- 37:44Speaker 2: You had this group of people in every continent or country.
- 37:49Speaker 2: They are in every little town a traveler that now
- 37:52Speaker 2: you can contact and they will recommend you a mechanic
- 37:55Speaker 2: or whatever. You're alone at all now you are no
- 37:59Speaker 2: resurrounded people who want to be part of your journey.
- 38:02Speaker 2: One we broke down a differential and we're going to
- 38:05Speaker 2: find a differential for this car, and we put it
- 38:08Speaker 2: in our instan run and Facebook. We are looking for
- 38:13Speaker 2: differential for the Graham page nineteen twenty. Can you help?
- 38:16Speaker 2: But you find one? And people who never look even
- 38:19Speaker 2: for their own card parts, they try to look as
- 38:22Speaker 2: to anywhere everywhere. And there was a differential who show
- 38:27Speaker 2: up in Australia and a differential who show up in Canada.
- 38:31Speaker 2: And the guys put in our comments, they put okay,
- 38:34Speaker 2: if you want it, you can come and take it
- 38:36Speaker 2: or tell me how to ship it to you. And
- 38:38Speaker 2: someone in the same comments say, look, I am a
- 38:40Speaker 2: pilot from Ivaria company, a Spanish company. I am right
- 38:44Speaker 2: now in Canada. I can take it back to Spain
- 38:47Speaker 2: it is closer to Africa. And another one another person
- 38:51Speaker 2: in the same comments say, look, I sent tourists to
- 38:55Speaker 2: South Africa. If the part comes to Spain, I can
- 38:58Speaker 2: put it in a tourist bag and he will take
- 39:00Speaker 2: it to South Africa. And another person from South Africa,
- 39:04Speaker 2: and the comments, but we'll love to take it to you.
- 39:07Speaker 2: If I need to take a bath or whatever, I
- 39:09Speaker 2: will take it to you. So then go, we broke down,
- 39:12Speaker 2: then go. We had this now this network where all
- 39:16Speaker 2: these people are part of the journey. We were not
- 39:18Speaker 2: alone at all when we start to have this network. Evely,
- 39:22Speaker 2: it's such a beautiful word, isn't it.
- 39:26Speaker 4: It sure is.
- 39:27Speaker 1: And I think it's so important to remember this because
- 39:29Speaker 1: a lot of the information we're given is about our differences,
- 39:32Speaker 1: or about how you should be afraid of other people,
- 39:35Speaker 1: or you know, we're all isolated in our own little
- 39:38Speaker 1: world now doing our own little thing, and the power
- 39:41Speaker 1: of community and the power of sharing a meal or
- 39:45Speaker 1: having people over, especially you know, post COVID. It's just
- 39:50Speaker 1: like such a good reminder and your experience is such
- 39:52Speaker 1: a testament to that.
- 39:55Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, And we were not lucky for fifteen day
- 39:58Speaker 2: journey where wonderful thing happened. We were blessed for twenty
- 40:02Speaker 2: two years. So it is like that. It's not something
- 40:05Speaker 2: that happened once or twice or three times. It was
- 40:08Speaker 2: something that happened for many times. For solar.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Yes, I read somewhere about that you guys took an
- 40:16Speaker 1: abandoned canoe, like you put your vehicle in an abandoned canoe.
- 40:19Speaker 1: And was this in Brazil in the Amazon.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Yes, Innapo, in an apple in the Napo River in Coca.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Someone later used his abandoned canoe. There was twenty two
- 40:32Speaker 2: meters long, made of iron metal, but it was half
- 40:36Speaker 2: under the water, half out of the water, with holes,
- 40:39Speaker 2: no engine, no propeller, no rather, And we asked you
- 40:43Speaker 2: we could use it. An engine show up that it
- 40:46Speaker 2: was not working, but the mechanics show up and fix it.
- 40:48Speaker 2: The propeller show up, and the diesel show up and
- 40:52Speaker 2: we build it together with so many people who didn't
- 40:54Speaker 2: have nothing but their hands to help us. We build
- 40:58Speaker 2: a rap and we needed none need to pay you
- 41:01Speaker 2: aboriginals who will come down the Amazon with that because
- 41:03Speaker 2: they know how to speak the language, how to sell
- 41:06Speaker 2: on the river, because it's not easy. Plus if we
- 41:10Speaker 2: need food or fishing or something, they will know how to.
- 41:13Speaker 2: And they were charging us two dollars a day or
- 41:15Speaker 2: for two dos a day only, but we didn't have them.
- 41:19Speaker 2: So Candela went to Key, to the capital of Ecuador,
- 41:22Speaker 2: and put a signs in the civil cafe or hostel.
- 41:27Speaker 3: Asking for people to enjoy the journey, that we were
- 41:31Speaker 3: like travelations. I didn't know anything about that river. I
- 41:37Speaker 3: was gonna be the navigation.
- 41:40Speaker 5: And two English guys back me and they came and
- 41:46Speaker 5: they asked me.
- 41:47Speaker 3: They asked me first, tell me when are we living,
- 41:50Speaker 3: When when the boat will be ready, and what we
- 41:53Speaker 3: are gonna arrive, because I have an authenticate to take
- 41:56Speaker 3: to London.
- 41:57Speaker 5: But I don't have any idea. What did you navigate
- 42:03Speaker 5: sometime other time?
- 42:05Speaker 2: No, I don't you have apps? We have mapps. No
- 42:09Speaker 2: we don't have apps. Okay, we are going with you.
- 42:13Speaker 2: They were more adventure than as, but it was an
- 42:16Speaker 2: amazing journey. Right. It was an amazing, amazing journey because
- 42:21Speaker 2: imagine we we had to feature it. We were every
- 42:25Speaker 2: night landing and they made abortition of people that they
- 42:31Speaker 2: never saw a car before. We were in the national
- 42:34Speaker 2: part that there was nobody because it's down there in
- 42:37Speaker 2: the Amazon.
- 42:38Speaker 3: Were with crocodiles, We ate pian onions everything.
- 42:44Speaker 2: Yes, thank god they didn't need it, and we.
- 42:46Speaker 3: Were in the wedding and wedding it was amazing.
- 42:51Speaker 2: Yeah. They prepared the alcoholic drink and chewing the mandoca
- 42:55Speaker 2: like to potato manioca right, and the woman to ed
- 42:59Speaker 2: had to be virgin woman to chew the mandiocre and
- 43:01Speaker 2: with their saliva and barkilia that they have in the mouth,
- 43:05Speaker 2: this mandocre that is a little bit sweet, it will
- 43:08Speaker 2: ferment and will become an alcoholic drink and it will
- 43:11Speaker 2: be inside of the spot and they will come and
- 43:14Speaker 2: bring it to you after fifteen twenty day become alcoholic
- 43:17Speaker 2: and you have to drinking from that and they will
- 43:19Speaker 2: feed you with whatever they were able to hat on
- 43:21Speaker 2: the on the jungle. And as soon as they had
- 43:24Speaker 2: something so it doesn't get rot, they had to cook it.
- 43:27Speaker 2: And the only way to cook it the aman said
- 43:29Speaker 2: it was smoke because there is no dry wood that
- 43:33Speaker 2: it will get fired, so it will get something, but
- 43:36Speaker 2: it was it will be just smoke. So everything stalls
- 43:39Speaker 2: like smoke, and they will bring you maybe at the
- 43:42Speaker 2: arm of a monkey, and it's like you're eating a
- 43:44Speaker 2: baby because you see the fingers. Everything It was like wood.
- 43:47Speaker 2: But it was really nice feelings, really CALLI. I was
- 43:51Speaker 2: learning English a lot because we had to British with
- 43:54Speaker 2: that all the time. And one day, like twenty days
- 43:57Speaker 2: after down the river and only the only woman on
- 44:00Speaker 2: the boat, she came with the broom because she's cleaned
- 44:03Speaker 2: the deg and she said, I am the pitch of
- 44:05Speaker 2: the boat. And I said what I said, Yes, I
- 44:09Speaker 2: am the boat. I said, Kenny, I think you were
- 44:11Speaker 2: twenty to say, which you know it was. But my
- 44:15Speaker 2: English was very bad.
- 44:16Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a little different between anguige and the guys. Yeah.
- 44:22Speaker 2: And the guy was asking okay, how much do you
- 44:24Speaker 2: charge and thing like that that she was pushing them
- 44:27Speaker 2: out to the world. Oh man, it was fun.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Well what an adventure, so you said, said twenty twenty
- 44:33Speaker 1: days on the river.
- 44:34Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it.
- 44:37Speaker 3: Was amazing, amazing learning because we realize how capable we
- 44:41Speaker 3: are right, because we have to with a lot of
- 44:43Speaker 3: help in that town. We had to restore all this
- 44:46Speaker 3: abandoned Canymoon, and we really didn't know where we were going.
- 44:50Speaker 3: The abolition of people that were with us. They never
- 44:53Speaker 3: did that part of the river, and it was we
- 44:57Speaker 3: were having problems all the time with the boat and
- 45:00Speaker 3: with the engine and the propeller.
- 45:02Speaker 2: We lost a rather. Can you imagine losting a rather
- 45:05Speaker 2: is like losing your stilling wheeling the car? How did
- 45:07Speaker 2: you drive it?
- 45:08Speaker 5: We were the guys with a machette.
- 45:10Speaker 2: Machete.
- 45:11Speaker 3: Yeah, they brought a piece of log and they built
- 45:16Speaker 3: another rader with that, and it was amazing.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Once we broke the belt of the engine, they cooled
- 45:22Speaker 2: down the engine and charged the batteries. And where we're
- 45:25Speaker 2: gonna get a belt? In the amas So I was
- 45:27Speaker 2: trying with my belt, with my cart belt, I was
- 45:30Speaker 2: trying with socks, I was trying with ropes. Nothing worked.
- 45:34Speaker 2: And the end I saw my spur tire and I
- 45:36Speaker 2: took out the tube and I cut the tube in
- 45:39Speaker 2: rings and I pulled it like a rubber band as
- 45:42Speaker 2: a belt and it did work for maybe four or
- 45:44Speaker 2: five six hours. Then it will break. But I will
- 45:46Speaker 2: have actually cut another one, and we made it all
- 45:48Speaker 2: the way to Itikito, Peru, big city in the Amazon,
- 45:52Speaker 2: where we were able to find the belt.
- 45:53Speaker 5: And there in the jungle, they don't manage the the
- 45:57Speaker 5: money right, so we were.
- 45:59Speaker 3: Taking like keirosine or rise things for the aboritional there
- 46:05Speaker 3: for the community, and we exchange.
- 46:08Speaker 5: I give you this, and you give me a chicken.
- 46:11Speaker 2: I give you this.
- 46:12Speaker 5: It like exchange.
- 46:15Speaker 2: And the amazing thing is when you go down the
- 46:17Speaker 2: Amazon River or whatever those places you are, you are well,
- 46:20Speaker 2: can't you go into any home that they are own?
- 46:23Speaker 2: Sticks their homes right, they're always up there and you
- 46:25Speaker 2: don't have to have permission. You just get there and
- 46:29Speaker 2: put your things to sleep, because that's what they always
- 46:31Speaker 2: do too when they go up or down the river
- 46:34Speaker 2: to visit family or wedding or whatever. They go and
- 46:38Speaker 2: they fast the night in somebody at home. But it
- 46:40Speaker 2: is so usual that you don't have to have permission.
- 46:43Speaker 2: When we got into one, there was no one. And
- 46:45Speaker 2: they have the where you made the fire. They have
- 46:48Speaker 2: like a place where they have a lot of earth
- 46:51Speaker 2: and ground material where they make the fire and you
- 46:54Speaker 2: cook your thing, your fish, and this guy show up
- 46:57Speaker 2: the owners and they didn't get at all. Are like
- 47:00Speaker 2: so used to have gas but they never have a
- 47:03Speaker 2: white girls. They look at us like the weird people
- 47:06Speaker 2: we were. But then we finished cooking together and things
- 47:09Speaker 2: like that and it was like, wow, it's so beautiful
- 47:11Speaker 2: the Amazon.
- 47:13Speaker 4: Hm hmm.
- 47:14Speaker 2: And it's not life because they don't have you know, knife.
- 47:18Speaker 2: They do have a knife, but they don't have a
- 47:20Speaker 2: four because if they have a four, they need to
- 47:21Speaker 2: have a plate. If they do have a plate, they
- 47:24Speaker 2: need to have a table. And they have a table,
- 47:26Speaker 2: they had to have a chair. So they shall go
- 47:29Speaker 2: with a knife and they can't sit down and eat anywhere.
- 47:32Speaker 4: Simple, amazing, simple, love it.
- 47:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. But however the car, the car was so simple,
- 47:41Speaker 2: no electronics, no computers, any any gas kind of gas.
- 47:45Speaker 2: It will work. You know, in Africa there was not
- 47:49Speaker 2: allowed to get into a national park with car that
- 47:51Speaker 2: there were not four white four and we wouldn't miss.
- 47:54Speaker 2: We wanted to go into the national park with the
- 47:57Speaker 2: car because if you go with the chief that they
- 47:59Speaker 2: take you and Safari is so expensive and so we
- 48:03Speaker 2: have to go with the car. So you know, how
- 48:05Speaker 2: we fix it. We bought this little plackage that say
- 48:08Speaker 2: four by four and we glew it you the one
- 48:10Speaker 2: side of the car. And in the end time when
- 48:12Speaker 2: they ask is this car four by four? Yes, you
- 48:15Speaker 2: can tell you look and.
- 48:17Speaker 5: There we're going and wait so many times.
- 48:21Speaker 2: In the man. But it's good to have fours in
- 48:26Speaker 2: that situation. It's very good to have four kas you
- 48:29Speaker 2: push the.
- 48:30Speaker 4: Car right, Oh my gosh, that's your four wheel drive.
- 48:35Speaker 2: Yeah, you're right. I never said it's a good one.
- 48:40Speaker 2: You're a good You're really good.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Did you guys have some difficulties with visas at any
- 48:51Speaker 1: point or border crossings or.
- 48:53Speaker 4: Paper Oh yeah, oh jempary vehicle import permit.
- 48:58Speaker 2: Yes, yes, of course, of course. But we never have
- 49:02Speaker 2: a problem in the whole journey. We have only how
- 49:05Speaker 2: you collector challenges, challenges, and it's so wonderful you have challenges.
- 49:10Speaker 2: It's so good. The more challenges you have, it's like
- 49:14Speaker 2: those rocks that are on your road. You can use them.
- 49:17Speaker 2: You can use them to build stairs, you can use
- 49:19Speaker 2: it to build home castles. Don't don't see them like
- 49:23Speaker 2: a problem, see them like, okay, how do we go
- 49:26Speaker 2: through with this?
- 49:27Speaker 3: What happened were in Mexico and we need to take
- 49:33Speaker 3: apply for visa for Canada for me, and we went
- 49:36Speaker 3: to apply but they say no, we go.
- 49:40Speaker 2: We don't have credit cards. We didn't have a credit card.
- 49:43Speaker 2: She was pregnant.
- 49:44Speaker 5: Yeah, so they say no one for us.
- 49:46Speaker 3: Was very, very a sad moment, you know, because when
- 49:50Speaker 3: you travel you you can see that there's no borders.
- 49:53Speaker 2: You know, the ones the same world.
- 49:56Speaker 5: One that you left in the other country. Here we
- 49:59Speaker 5: are all the same for us, the borders are. It
- 50:02Speaker 5: doesn't have to exist, you know.
- 50:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and we are so sad. And also they put
- 50:08Speaker 2: a rest down in your passport telling you denied it.
- 50:11Speaker 2: And it's so nice that in your pastor says that
- 50:13Speaker 2: you are denied. First I went with our.
- 50:15Speaker 5: Dream there and we were like, we said, no way,
- 50:19Speaker 5: what dream is to get to Alaska.
- 50:21Speaker 2: So we contacted a Canadian friend that we met going
- 50:24Speaker 2: up to Machu Picchu that we made the tread together.
- 50:27Speaker 2: We invited to come to his home when we went
- 50:30Speaker 2: to Alaska, and we said, well, look this is the situation.
- 50:33Speaker 2: We got denied. I don't know how we're going to
- 50:35Speaker 2: go anyway through, but uh, we were. We were denied.
- 50:40Speaker 2: And he asked us lovely questions about the journey. He
- 50:43Speaker 2: asked us for a picture, and he never did. He
- 50:45Speaker 2: never did an article, but he did wrote an article
- 50:48Speaker 2: for the magazine about Vitage Cards, that is a very
- 50:51Speaker 2: famous magazine in Canada. Go from coach to coast and
- 50:55Speaker 2: they told about our dream, a lot about our car.
- 50:58Speaker 2: And the last paragraphs said, but this drink can be
- 51:00Speaker 2: accomplished because Canada denied their path to Alaska. But if
- 51:04Speaker 2: you want to help them, invite them. And we got
- 51:08Speaker 2: more than three hundred letters invitations to go to Canada.
- 51:12Speaker 2: And when we are right to Washington, we went back
- 51:15Speaker 2: to the embassy of Canada and this lady, the one
- 51:18Speaker 2: we had to fill up, performed as say. And the
- 51:21Speaker 2: last three questions was, have you ever had a very
- 51:23Speaker 2: bad disease like this? This, this or this? No? Have
- 51:27Speaker 2: you ever been a terrory? Have you ever been a murder?
- 51:30Speaker 2: Or have you ever been in jail? No? Have you
- 51:32Speaker 2: ever been denied to visa to Canada? Yeah, And we
- 51:37Speaker 2: went up there to the window and we started to
- 51:40Speaker 2: say hello, and she didn't even say hello to us,
- 51:43Speaker 2: She didn't even look to us. And we said, Hi,
- 51:46Speaker 2: we are looking to make the visa. We are from Argentina.
- 51:49Speaker 2: We are traveling a winter car and she looked up,
- 51:52Speaker 2: are you the one with the vinter's cars. We got
- 51:54Speaker 2: so many phone calls here, what do you need there?
- 51:58Speaker 5: I say everything. I need a multiply entries to need one,
- 52:07Speaker 5: I say everything. I asked for everything, and did she started.
- 52:11Speaker 2: Passport okay, and then it was spectacular. But go now
- 52:15Speaker 2: we have three hundred imitations to stay Keller. So there
- 52:18Speaker 2: was no one night, only one night that we couldn't
- 52:20Speaker 2: lived in a family home because the car broke down.
- 52:23Speaker 2: But then every now we were in kenny homes. So
- 52:26Speaker 2: thank god Mexico. Yeah, then the other country is the same. Yeah,
- 52:33Speaker 2: so other country we got like even for the Philippine,
- 52:36Speaker 2: you cannot take a car. It's not allowed to take
