- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Paps.
- 0:23Speaker 2: We're in the DP Show Man Cave in the baseball
- 0:25Speaker 2: corner because it is wild card time.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a great day today. We've got a lot
- 0:29Speaker 3: coming up on the show. Hit all the games, yesterday's games,
- 0:32Speaker 3: today's games on NBC and Peacock. Bonus coverage, Florida Gators
- 0:36Speaker 3: running back Jaden Ball. What a month he's had for
- 0:38Speaker 3: the Gators at 4-0. He'll join us in 20 minutes.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Awesome. All right, what do we got on tap today?
- 0:42Speaker 2: The MLB postseason continues on NBC and Peacock. First up,
- 0:46Speaker 2: Phillies and the Braves, followed by the White Sox and Astros.
- 0:49Speaker 2: I know you're tuned into that. Then, of course, in primetime,
- 0:52Speaker 2: Game 2, Red Sox at the Yankees. Then, to tap
- 0:55Speaker 2: it off, Cubs face the Padres. MLB Wild Card presented
- 0:59Speaker 2: by Abbey begins this afternoon. NBC and Peacock. Paul, yesterday
- 1:04Speaker 2: was awesome.
- 1:05Speaker 3: It was a fun day here. All the bros got
- 1:07Speaker 3: over there on the couches, and we were watching the
- 1:08Speaker 3: games right off the jump. And what really stands out
- 1:11Speaker 3: about the Wild Card now, since they changed it about
- 1:13Speaker 3: five years ago, three games on the road. Best of three.
- 1:17Speaker 3: The urgency right off the bat. We were watching Philadelphia.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Philadelphia got to Chris Sale early. And when they did that,
- 1:22Speaker 3: and we're going to talk about the Yankees in a second,
- 1:24Speaker 3: but when they got to that game and they get
- 1:27Speaker 3: a couple runs early, it's like, we're there. And vice versa.
- 1:30Speaker 3: If your team's losing even in the first couple of
- 1:32Speaker 3: innings of the first game, it doesn't look good.
- 1:34Speaker 2: It was a little embarrassing for me. I'm a Phillies fan.
- 1:36Speaker 2: And the whole crew, the whole Dan Patrick show crew,
- 1:39Speaker 2: the Not So Fast crew, was sitting around on the
- 1:40Speaker 2: couch watching the game. And I was pacing. You know
- 1:43Speaker 2: how you get during a game.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Baseball pacing. You're like Leo Mazzoni going like this.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Yeah, everyone's like relaxed. It's only game one. But that's
- 1:49Speaker 2: not the way the wild card works. They kept flashing
- 1:51Speaker 2: the stat that winners of game one have won 15
- 1:54Speaker 2: of 16 wild card series since they changed the format.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I find the wild card round brutal. One of the
- 1:59Speaker 2: most brutal things in sports. Because you work so hard
- 2:01Speaker 2: to get there, then it's over like that.
- 2:03Speaker 3: It's fair but brutal. It's like the NCAA tournaments. You're
- 2:06Speaker 3: one and done. This is three and done. So at
- 2:07Speaker 3: least you have a chance to kind of work with
- 2:09Speaker 3: your pitching staff. Let's get right to the first game.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Yankees over the Red Sox 9-0. Now, when you see 9-0,
- 2:15Speaker 3: if you didn't watch that game, the first few innings
- 2:16Speaker 3: felt like a great game. Peyton Tolley was playing well,
- 2:20Speaker 3: and then he got away from them. And Ben Rice
- 2:21Speaker 3: took over. Cam Schlittler took over. And those two guys,
- 2:24Speaker 3: when you have two hammers, it's like having a great
- 2:27Speaker 3: goaltender in hockey, but you also have a great scorer.
- 2:30Speaker 3: They were able to shut down the Red Sox, and
- 2:32Speaker 3: the Red Sox don't have an answer, not a bat
- 2:34Speaker 3: that can keep up with, like, Ben Rice.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Well, yeah. I mean, listen, you say they have two hammers.
- 2:37Speaker 2: You would think one of those hammers would be Aaron Judge.
- 2:40Speaker 2: I don't think anyone saw Ben Rice having a record-breaking
- 2:42Speaker 2: game one, let alone the rest of the Yankees lineup,
- 2:44Speaker 2: which hasn't done anything in a long time. All of
- 2:47Speaker 2: a sudden, they all showed up.
- 2:48Speaker 3: But if you go back to the Red Sox, they
- 2:49Speaker 3: have a very good pitcher, a very good pitching staff.
- 2:51Speaker 3: They were 12-12 down the stretch. They feel like a
- 2:54Speaker 3: team that kind of eased into the playoffs. Roman Anthony's
- 2:57Speaker 3: a good player. He's not available. He's hurt. The days
- 3:01Speaker 3: of Mookie Betts are over. The days of David Ortiz
- 3:04Speaker 3: are over. They don't have that guy in the lineup
- 3:06Speaker 3: that you fear, and that really limits them. And Ben Rice,
- 3:09Speaker 3: like you said, he's not a superstar, but he is
- 3:12Speaker 3: a guy who could have a game like that, and
- 3:13Speaker 3: he did.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Wow, the Red Sox, the narrative was going to hammer
- 3:15Speaker 2: them with left-handed pitching, all the left-handed batters, and the
- 3:18Speaker 2: left-handed batters just got to them. It's not what you expect,
- 3:21Speaker 2: but again, that's my problem with the wild card. It feels,
- 3:24Speaker 2: and this is me, it feels done in a way.
- 3:26Speaker 2: You watch that game, you watch how dominant Slater was
- 3:28Speaker 2: against the The Red Sox, can the Red Sox come
- 3:31Speaker 2: back from that? I find that it's a very tough assignment.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Well, I find that fans, especially of a team on
- 3:36Speaker 3: the downside, like if you're a Red Sox fan, we've
- 3:38Speaker 3: got a couple of Red Sox fans in the building,
- 3:40Speaker 3: and they are demoralized.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Yes.
- 3:41Speaker 3: And it's the runs that do it. If you lost
- 3:43Speaker 3: that game 2-1, it's the same result. But if you
- 3:46Speaker 3: lose 9-0, you feel inept. And it kind of puts
- 3:49Speaker 3: like a big eraser on the entire season. Like, let's
- 3:52Speaker 3: go to the Cubs. Let's go to the Padres over
- 3:54Speaker 3: the Cubs, 8-0. I watched that game, and the Padres
- 3:57Speaker 3: fans were in it right off the jump. Tatis gets
- 3:59Speaker 3: the home run in the bottom of the first. Machado
- 4:02Speaker 3: gets a home run in the bottom of the first.
- 4:03Speaker 3: It felt like that game was over before it started
- 4:05Speaker 3: because the Cubs were getting eaten alive on Michael King,
- 4:08Speaker 3: the Padres starter. And they they felt like they had said, well,
- 4:11Speaker 3: this is not going to work out for us today.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Yeah. If you're somebody who believes stars win in the postseason,
- 4:16Speaker 2: the Padres are your team. I mean, that that team
- 4:18Speaker 2: has legit star power. And these guys, all of them
- 4:21Speaker 2: have been in the playoffs for a while. I feel
- 4:23Speaker 2: like I've been watching Tatis and Machado in the playoffs
- 4:25Speaker 2: for a long time.
- 4:26Speaker 3: And if you watch that play, I know one play
- 4:28Speaker 3: doesn't make a ball game, but going back to that
- 4:30Speaker 3: Tatis home run, PCA almost got it. He almost robbed that.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Can you imagine if that inning ends 0-0 off a
- 4:36Speaker 3: Pete Crow Armstrong robbery of a home run? It wasn't.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Machado goes yard there. The fans were already into it,
- 4:43Speaker 3: and it was galactic after that.
- 4:44Speaker 2: No, you could tell that was out of the four games.
- 4:47Speaker 2: I mean, there were some attendance problems at two of
- 4:49Speaker 2: the games. Yep. That was the game that was most bananas.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Yankee Stadium was also a little bit nuts.
- 4:53Speaker 3: And if you look at Tatis and Machado, those guys
- 4:55Speaker 3: were superstars and have had their issues. They've cooled off
- 4:58Speaker 3: in their careers. Tatis had the season where he was
- 5:00Speaker 3: hurt and was suspended, no offense. But they did it
- 5:04Speaker 3: last night. The other thing that really stood out to
- 5:05Speaker 3: that game, going back to the Cubs kind of mailing
- 5:08Speaker 3: it in at the end, seventh inning, Tatis goes to
- 5:11Speaker 3: steal second base, right? And the ball goes off his foot,
- 5:13Speaker 3: careens into the outfield. The outfielders were lackadaisical. Tatis gets
- 5:17Speaker 3: right back on his horse. starts hustling towards home plate,
- 5:20Speaker 3: and gets another insurance run. And watch this play here. Bango,
- 5:24Speaker 3: watch the outfield. Hey, guys, there's a loose ball here.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Why don't we grab it before Tatis cruises into home plate?
- 5:30Speaker 2: Yeah, and the play wasn't even close. I think this
- 5:32Speaker 2: is the iconic moment right there of the entire series.
- 5:35Speaker 2: It could be one of those moments for the whole playoffs.
- 5:37Speaker 2: I'm not going to say it's Derek Jeter diving into
- 5:39Speaker 2: the crowd, but that was cool.
- 5:40Speaker 3: It did set the tone, and it set the tone that, like,
- 5:42Speaker 3: we can score seven runs. And the Cubs are known
- 5:45Speaker 3: for scoring runs and for winning in late innings. It
- 5:47Speaker 3: felt like they didn't even engage that that could be
- 5:49Speaker 3: a possibility at the end of the game.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it felt like a moral victory. Meanwhile, my Phils
- 5:54Speaker 2: had it, Paul. And this is a story of the
- 5:57Speaker 2: Philadelphia Phillies for this era. I don't think Bryce Harper
- 6:00Speaker 2: and Kyle Schwarber are ever going to win a World Series.
- 6:02Speaker 2: I'll tell you exactly why. Any Phillies fans know this.
- 6:04Speaker 2: The bullpen in the playoffs have been terrible. They have
- 6:07Speaker 2: a 12.19 ERA when leading after the sixth inning loss.
- 6:13Speaker 2: since 2024. So yesterday, they got to Atlanta early. The
- 6:19Speaker 2: one pitcher that was going to beat them, Chris Sale
- 6:21Speaker 2: of the Braves, they had a lead. He left, and
- 6:23Speaker 2: they still could not come away with a W.
- 6:25Speaker 3: It's, again, one of those games where you see that
- 6:27Speaker 3: Chris Sale had a four-hitter. You're like, wow, he was dealing.
- 6:29Speaker 3: They did get to him earlier. They had a chance
- 6:31Speaker 3: to knock him out of the box, and they didn't
- 6:33Speaker 3: do so. I don't think the Phillies are done. They
- 6:35Speaker 3: have too much bat power to say done Like, they
- 6:37Speaker 3: have those... Look at your face.
- 6:39Speaker 2: They're done. Not only are they done.
- 6:41Speaker 3: We don't do that on this show.
- 6:42Speaker 2: We don't say done. They're done. I'll do it right now.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Not only are they done, this era's done. Like, Bryce
- 6:47Speaker 2: Harper in Philadelphia, I think the fans are going to
- 6:50Speaker 2: be so upset after they lose this series. I mean,
- 6:52Speaker 2: the stat, 15 out of 16 series, Paul, why would
- 6:55Speaker 2: this series be any different? I know that Phillies have
- 6:57Speaker 2: that strong starting pitching, but they unfortunately, because they were
- 7:00Speaker 2: so bad at the end of last season, they screwed
- 7:01Speaker 2: up their rotation. I'm saying done.
- 7:03Speaker 3: So you're saying this is a team that is technically
- 7:06Speaker 3: in the playoffs, but not a playoff contender.
- 7:08Speaker 2: You know what? I have no faith. And this is,
- 7:11Speaker 2: of course, a Philly thing. I might sound extreme. Listen
- 7:14Speaker 2: to WIP in Philadelphia. Everybody's saying the same thing.
- 7:17Speaker 3: I'm not going to listen to WIP in Philadelphia. I'm
- 7:18Speaker 3: going to have to do it through you. I listen
- 7:20Speaker 3: to Chicago radio sometimes. And Chicago radio was very split
- 7:23Speaker 3: today because of the White Sox winning, even though nobody
- 7:26Speaker 3: believes the White Sox are contenders. And the Cubs, which
- 7:29Speaker 3: have this great offense, terrible bullpen. I think there's There
- 7:33Speaker 3: was some resentment with Cubs fans yesterday, last night, and
- 7:36Speaker 3: this morning because it felt like a no-show game. Not
- 7:40Speaker 3: just a game that you lost, but Michael King owned you.
- 7:43Speaker 3: He completely owned you. Now, the Cubs, with their offense,
- 7:45Speaker 3: can come back and do this. You're saying no with
- 7:47Speaker 3: the Phillies.
- 7:48Speaker 2: No, I think the Phillies, the defeat on their faces
- 7:51Speaker 2: in the ninth inning... Yesterday, I really think the way
- 7:54Speaker 2: wild card works, that's the thing about wild card. It's
- 7:56Speaker 2: just over like that, Paul. And I think it's over.
- 7:58Speaker 3: I got to keep your morale up. All right, let's
- 8:00Speaker 3: get about, we give out helmet stickers during the NFL season.
- 8:02Speaker 3: We're giving out Jersey patches. Very exciting. I will go
- 8:04Speaker 3: first while you regroup and get your head together. Michael
- 8:07Speaker 3: King of the Padres. This guy is not a household name,
- 8:09Speaker 3: but he is a great pitcher. When he was on
- 8:11Speaker 3: the mound yesterday, they were talking about him and they
- 8:13Speaker 3: were comparing him to Tom Brady in his preparation. This
- 8:16Speaker 3: guy is a maniac with the iPad and all that stuff.
- 8:19Speaker 3: And he was just dealing. He kind of has a
- 8:21Speaker 3: little bit of a Greg Maddux vibe to him where
- 8:23Speaker 3: he's just doing it without being a physically imposing person.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Michael King is a great pitcher. Owned the Cubs yesterday.
- 8:29Speaker 3: He had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning. You
- 8:32Speaker 3: don't do that in a postseason against one of the best,
- 8:34Speaker 3: if not the best, offense in baseball. He shut them
- 8:36Speaker 3: down like a goaltender pitching a shutout. It was fantastic.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Really great game. Michael King gets the jersey patch.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Okay, I'm going to the Yankees and my guy Ben Rice.
- 8:44Speaker 2: You know where he went to college? Dartmouth. Dartmouth College,
- 8:47Speaker 2: my alma mater. Here's the stat on him. He became
- 8:51Speaker 2: the first player ever to have multiple homers, including a
- 8:53Speaker 2: grand slam. All of his team's extra base hits and
- 8:56Speaker 2: out hit the entire opposing team in a single game.
- 9:00Speaker 2: That's unbelievable. I mean, you can't do any more than
- 9:02Speaker 2: he did yesterday.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Bonus coverage on Ben Rice. Grew up in Massachusetts. Grew
- 9:06Speaker 3: up a Yankees fan, a Jeter fan. So everyone thought, well,
- 9:08Speaker 3: clearly he's from Mass. He went to Dartmouth. You know,
- 9:11Speaker 3: he's definitely a Red Sox fan. No go. Schlittler is.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Nailed that name. Ben Rice, not so much.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Yeah. One thing, just people were curious. Ben Rice went
- 9:18Speaker 2: there after. We were not there at the same time. Right.
- 9:21Speaker 2: But I was there with Brad Alsmus, longtime manager and catcher.
- 9:24Speaker 3: You guys both played sports at Dartmouth. You, JV, basketball.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Ben Rice.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Yeah, we're a little different. But I'll be honest, Ben Rice...
- 9:31Speaker 2: You would have thought coming into this season, Ben Rice,
- 9:34Speaker 2: a nice story. This is going to be Aaron Judge
- 9:36Speaker 2: or Giancarlo Stanton. And now all of a sudden we
- 9:38Speaker 2: have a new slugger. Very interesting.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Well, if they can keep that, if they could advance
- 9:41Speaker 3: on and give some rest to Judge, it could be
- 9:43Speaker 3: a whole different series.
- 9:45Speaker 2: I felt actually coming out of yesterday, the one team
- 9:47Speaker 2: that I really felt good about was the Yankees. I
- 9:49Speaker 2: know Slitler owns the Red Sox in particular, but if
- 9:52Speaker 2: he could pitch like that throughout the postseason, they're a
- 9:54Speaker 2: very dangerous team.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I would say the same about the Padres. If
- 9:56Speaker 3: they have a couple more home games, they're in great shape.
- 9:59Speaker 3: All right, let's go to it. It's time for a
- 10:00Speaker 3: little NFL week three in the books completely, wherever those
- 10:03Speaker 3: books are. That's in them. We're going to do our
- 10:06Speaker 3: September VP. We do this every month, and this is
- 10:08Speaker 3: the first month doing it, so we've never done it before.
- 10:11Speaker 3: This is the best player of the month in professional football.
- 10:14Speaker 3: You're going first, Pearl.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Okay, since you put VP most valuable player, it has
- 10:19Speaker 2: to be Josh Allen, who you see number one in
- 10:21Speaker 2: the actual MVP odds. Because without Josh Allen, the Bills
- 10:24Speaker 2: are one and two. You could see it on Sunday
- 10:26Speaker 2: against the Chargers. They are not playing well in any
- 10:28Speaker 2: aspect of the game. And then Josh Allen absolutely puts
- 10:31Speaker 2: him on his shoulder with his legs. He's the most
- 10:35Speaker 2: one-person team in the NFL. It's like basketball. You know
- 10:38Speaker 2: how LeBron can carry a team? Josh Allen is doing
- 10:41Speaker 2: that with the Bills. Usually you don't see that in football,
- 10:43Speaker 2: but to me he's the easy choice.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Okay, I'm going to go off the board just a
- 10:46Speaker 3: little bit because I can't believe he's not on the board.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Running back Kenneth Walker for the Chiefs, he's had a
- 10:52Speaker 3: great season. 360 yards, 5.5 yards to carry, 11 catches
- 10:56Speaker 3: as a bonus. And the bigger picture with Kenneth Walker
- 10:59Speaker 3: is what he does to the Chiefs offense. You can't
- 11:01Speaker 3: focus on Mahomes. You can't just blitz all day. This
- 11:04Speaker 3: guy is a power running back who has some sizzle,
- 11:06Speaker 3: has some wiggle. He can do everything. He's in his prime.
- 11:09Speaker 3: He's got a contract. He's on a team where he's
- 11:11Speaker 3: probably going to go back deep into the playoffs. This
- 11:14Speaker 3: is the best edition of the year, and he is
- 11:16Speaker 3: my September VP, Ken Walker.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Let's play this out. Imagine that Ken Walker keeps doing
- 11:21Speaker 2: this all year long. Do you think there's any chance
- 11:23Speaker 2: with Mahomes on your team that you could get some
- 11:25Speaker 2: MVP noise? Because you will always be overshadowed by your quarterback.
- 11:28Speaker 5: You're right.
- 11:29Speaker 3: He's not even on the top five odds of MVP.
- 11:31Speaker 3: But Ken Walker right now is on pace for 1,900 yards. Now,
- 11:34Speaker 3: there's a long way to go. But let's say he
- 11:36Speaker 3: gets into that 1,800-yard marker. I think he should. There's
- 11:39Speaker 3: that thing in the NFL that really bothers me. This
- 11:42Speaker 3: really bothers me. Running backs and wide receivers get, oh, boy,
- 11:46Speaker 3: they get the offensive player of the year because we
- 11:47Speaker 3: can't put them at MVP. You ask Mahomes. I know
- 11:50Speaker 3: Mahomes is more valuable day to day, but who's his MVP?
- 11:54Speaker 3: I bet his vote is for Ken Walker.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Oh, two years ago, Saquon Barkley should have won the MVP.
- 11:58Speaker 2: And then he went into the playoffs and tore it up.
- 12:00Speaker 2: I think that Lamar won it that year. Lamar's already
- 12:02Speaker 2: got an MVP. He doesn't need more. Okay, coming up next,
- 12:06Speaker 2: I have the most disappointing team in the NFL this
- 12:08Speaker 2: year and maybe in many, many years. That's next. Not
- 12:12Speaker 2: so fast.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Okay, Pearl, this is the midday pick-me-up, Pabst and Perloff.
- 12:17Speaker 3: I don't know if it's going to have that effect
- 12:19Speaker 3: on you today.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Oh, come on.
- 12:22Speaker 3: That is Austin Riley of the Braves, three-run homer to
- 12:26Speaker 3: take down your Phillies. It's not the midday pick-me-up for you.
- 12:30Speaker 3: For Braves fans, yes. You, not so much.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Oh, man. So, manager Don Mattingly is in trouble for
- 12:36Speaker 2: his decision to go to the closer early. That was
- 12:38Speaker 2: a bit of a meatball right there to Austin Riley,
- 12:40Speaker 2: who hasn't been hitting at all. That was a terrible
- 12:42Speaker 2: way to lose this game for my Phillies.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Did you want to watch it again? Because they have
- 12:46Speaker 3: it ready. You can call for it any time.
- 12:48Speaker 2: No, I'm good. For the rest of my life, I'm good.
- 12:50Speaker 2: I mean, it's not Joe Carter bad, but it's not good.
- 12:52Speaker 3: I like the celebration. He had like two scepters in
- 12:54Speaker 3: the dugout. I don't know what that was. It was
- 12:56Speaker 3: like a king.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Oh, I love home run celebrations. Like a jacket. We
- 13:00Speaker 2: should figure out something like that for Not So Fast.
- 13:02Speaker 2: We should.
- 13:02Speaker 3: If we ever hit a home run on this show,
- 13:03Speaker 3: we will celebrate that way. All right, it's time for,
- 13:05Speaker 3: let's get back to it. Let's regroup Pearl. Let's get
- 13:07Speaker 3: our heads together. We're not losers, technically. It's time for
- 13:10Speaker 3: Warm Takes.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Warm takes.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 13:12Speaker 3: I'm going to go first. The White Sox. If you've
- 13:15Speaker 3: ever been in a city that has two teams, Jets
- 13:19Speaker 3: and Giants, Lakers and Clippers, one team soaks it all
- 13:22Speaker 3: up and one team is the little brother. Like Lakers
- 13:25Speaker 3: and Clippers, Clippers will never get the coverage. And when
- 13:27Speaker 3: they get coverage, it's usually for some type of scandal.
- 13:30Speaker 3: The White Sox know all about this. In Chicago, the
- 13:33Speaker 3: Chicago Cubs soak up most of the coverage in that town.
- 13:35Speaker 3: They're America's team. They're a national team. They're on WGN
- 13:38Speaker 3: for years.
- 13:39Speaker 2: The Cubs.
- 13:41Speaker 3: The stadium is the star. I mean, Wrigley Field is
- 13:43Speaker 3: the star. People come in, and the Cubs, it's a
- 13:45Speaker 3: tourist attraction. You want to go to a Cubs game.
- 13:48Speaker 3: And it's always an uphill battle for the White Sox. Well,
- 13:51Speaker 3: the White Sox have had a really interesting year. Two
- 13:53Speaker 3: years ago, 121 losses. Everyone talked about that. Then it changed.
- 13:57Speaker 3: The Pope is from the South Side, and they got
- 13:59Speaker 3: a little buzz for the Pope being a South Sider
- 14:00Speaker 3: and being a White Sox fan. And then the White
- 14:02Speaker 3: Sox kind of inched up. Cute story. Beyond a cute story, too,
- 14:06Speaker 3: making the playoffs. Yeah. Are they a 100-win team?
- 14:09Speaker 2: No.
- 14:09Speaker 3: They're more like an 80-ish win team. Murakami is a
- 14:12Speaker 3: good guy. He's a very interesting guy. People are jumping
- 14:14Speaker 3: on that bandwagon. The White Sox can force the issue.
- 14:17Speaker 3: All you have to do is win. You win one
- 14:19Speaker 3: more game, and then it's almost like you're like one
- 14:21Speaker 3: of those teams like George Mason in the NCAA tournament
- 14:23Speaker 3: where if you win a game or two, you get
- 14:25Speaker 3: a lot of coverage for two weeks. If you enter
- 14:27Speaker 3: the Sweet 16 and you're St. Peter's, you get a
- 14:30Speaker 3: lot of coverage. The White Sox have the opportunity to
- 14:33Speaker 3: change the narrative. If the Cubs lose tonight, they're out,
- 14:36Speaker 3: and they'll talk about that in Chicago. But I'd rather
- 14:38Speaker 3: be talked about being a winner. If you could just
- 14:40Speaker 3: get to the next round, you get all the coverage nationally, locally,
- 14:44Speaker 3: all good.
- 14:44Speaker 2: You know, it's kind of funny. You compare them to
- 14:46Speaker 2: the NCAA tournament. Yeah. You know, you like those small
- 14:50Speaker 2: teams in the beginning, but then CBS or Turner want
- 14:53Speaker 2: them out by the Final Four. What is the deal
- 14:56Speaker 2: with the White Sox? Do you think MLB wants to
- 14:58Speaker 2: see a Chicago World Series?
- 15:00Speaker 3: No, if you ask MLB, they always want Yankees-Dodgers. There's
- 15:03Speaker 3: other teams you'd want. You'd want the Cubs because that's
- 15:05Speaker 3: a big.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Isn't it funny? Well, the Cubs are a Chicago team.
- 15:08Speaker 2: They would want that team, but they definitely don't want
- 15:10Speaker 2: the White Sox.
- 15:11Speaker 3: No, the White Sox were in an 0-5 versus the Astros,
- 15:13Speaker 3: and I don't know how much ratings that got. Again,
- 15:16Speaker 3: the Cubs are national, and they're like this.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Yes.
- 15:19Speaker 3: They're a lovable team, but it's not the 2016 Cubs
- 15:21Speaker 3: that never won before. The White Sox are now in
- 15:23Speaker 3: position to be the lovable team that has always struggled.
- 15:26Speaker 3: So I think it's a, B-level story. I don't know
- 15:29Speaker 3: if Major League Baseball has signed him.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Well, it's funny because I grew up with WGN and
- 15:32Speaker 2: the Cubs. I knew the Cubs and everyone knows Wrigley.
- 15:35Speaker 2: You said it very well. Nobody knows whatever Comiskey's called
- 15:39Speaker 2: these days.
- 15:39Speaker 3: We call it Sox Park here.
- 15:41Speaker 2: All right, I'll try to get into it. You've got
- 15:42Speaker 2: me a little bit into the White Sox. There we go. Okay,
- 15:45Speaker 2: I'm going to go to the other end of the spectrum,
- 15:46Speaker 2: a team that everybody knows, the Los Angeles Rams. Remember
- 15:50Speaker 2: the Dream Team talk from this summer? Seems like a
- 15:52Speaker 2: distant memory. I am issuing a warning, Paul. I call
- 15:57Speaker 2: it The Ramspocalypse. Okay, the Rams have two tough games
- 16:03Speaker 2: coming up. At Philly at 1 p.m. Eastern. I'm not
- 16:06Speaker 2: sure why that game is at 1 p.m. Eastern, but
- 16:08Speaker 2: it definitely is. And then they go, no, sorry, they
- 16:12Speaker 2: host Buffalo on Monday night the following week. So they're
- 16:15Speaker 2: 1-2 already. There's a real chance they're 1-4. They're favored
- 16:19Speaker 2: against the Eagles, but the Eagles, if Jalen Hurts decides
- 16:21Speaker 2: to run the ball for once, then the Eagles could
- 16:24Speaker 2: be pretty good in this game coming off a Monday
- 16:26Speaker 2: night loss. If the Rams go to 1-4, very, very
- 16:30Speaker 2: real possibility, Paul. 1-4 is not good. I looked up
- 16:33Speaker 2: the numbers of the 1-4 teams that made it to
- 16:36Speaker 2: the playoffs. Only 6% the last whatever years. Actually, yeah,
- 16:40Speaker 2: I did look it up. I'm not even making that up.
- 16:42Speaker 2: It's very slim.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Okay, I think it's a really good point because everyone
- 16:45Speaker 3: thought that they would be the super team. And when
- 16:47Speaker 3: was the last time a super team, a dubbed super
- 16:50Speaker 3: team worked out? And their schedule at the end gets tougher.
- 16:52Speaker 3: It doesn't get easier.
- 16:53Speaker 2: They have an easy run with a lot of Commanders
- 16:55Speaker 2: and Cardinals in there. But a couple things that worry me.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Puka Nakua might come back this week. He's not going
- 17:00Speaker 2: to be 100%. Myles Garrett's out a month. And then
- 17:03Speaker 2: Matthew Stafford does not look like last year's MVP. He
- 17:05Speaker 2: already has four picks on the year. That's a lot
- 17:07Speaker 2: for him. He looks frustrated. You saw in the Denver
- 17:10Speaker 2: game especially, he just looked angry in the second half.
- 17:13Speaker 2: I think he really misses Puka Nikua.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Are you ready to call it that they're going to
- 17:16Speaker 3: make the playoffs or are you going to let another
- 17:17Speaker 3: two weeks play out?
- 17:18Speaker 2: I think they make the playoffs, but they're definitely going
- 17:20Speaker 2: to have to go on the road. I don't think
- 17:22Speaker 2: that they're going to host it all the way through
- 17:24Speaker 2: the Super Bowl as some people expected, and I think
- 17:26Speaker 2: it's really wide open. The problem being the Niners and
- 17:29Speaker 2: the Seahawks sitting there in the NFC West. I'm not
- 17:32Speaker 2: going to call it out of the playoffs, but there's
- 17:33Speaker 2: some danger because there are a lot of teams with
- 17:35Speaker 2: an easier schedule than the Rams.
- 17:36Speaker 3: I wonder if this is a situation where the Rams,
- 17:38Speaker 3: I don't know, I wouldn't say they bought their own
- 17:40Speaker 3: hype because that's not fair to them. It's the injuries
- 17:42Speaker 3: that's really playing. But when you're expected to be great,
- 17:44Speaker 3: There's not urgency in September.
- 17:46Speaker 2: Well, that's what I want to ask about, the mental
- 17:49Speaker 2: aspect of this. You know, they thought they were one thing.
- 17:52Speaker 2: After three games, they're a completely other thing. Do you
- 17:55Speaker 2: think that inspires them or do you think they're feeling pressure?
- 17:57Speaker 2: Because if they go to one and four, there might
- 17:59Speaker 2: be some panic in LA.
- 18:00Speaker 3: I think it's a wake-up call. I go back to
- 18:02Speaker 3: thinking they probably thought to themselves, we're the best team
- 18:04Speaker 3: in football. Don't worry about a loss here or a
- 18:07Speaker 3: loss there. And I think they're probably still that way.
- 18:09Speaker 3: Matthew Stafford doesn't seem like a panic guy.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Well, yeah, but is he playing well? It doesn't look
- 18:13Speaker 2: like the same offense as last year. Some teams may
- 18:16Speaker 2: have figured out the run game of Sean McVay. I
- 18:19Speaker 2: hope you're right for Rams fans' sake that it is
- 18:21Speaker 2: a wake-up call because I see some really disturbing trends.
- 18:23Speaker 3: All right, let's go back to baseball. My next warm take,
- 18:26Speaker 3: here it is. I'm going to go down the coast
- 18:27Speaker 3: to San Diego. You know, I'm not that big on
- 18:29Speaker 3: home field advantage. I think it's sometimes overrated. I know
- 18:32Speaker 3: there's stats that bear it out here and there, but
- 18:34Speaker 3: I'm going to give credit where credit is due. Those
- 18:36Speaker 3: San Diego Padres fans last night were electric. If you
- 18:38Speaker 3: tuned into NBC and Peacock and saw the game right
- 18:41Speaker 3: before the first pitch, it was out of hand. They
- 18:44Speaker 3: were standing like it was the ninth inning. It was
- 18:46Speaker 3: absolutely fantastic. And they never stopped. They got the home
- 18:49Speaker 3: run from Tatis. They get the home from Machado. And
- 18:51Speaker 3: that emboldened them. They were up the whole game. And
- 18:54Speaker 3: there's an interesting thing about San Diego. They have this
- 18:57Speaker 3: reputation about being a laid-back, chill place. That's not the
- 19:00Speaker 3: case with their baseball team. And that is their team.
- 19:03Speaker 3: When the Chargers leave, There's not a lot of options
- 19:05Speaker 3: in that town for sports.
- 19:06Speaker 2: That's it.
- 19:07Speaker 3: It's Padres or bust. And they have a great stadium downtown.
- 19:11Speaker 3: But that's where I really believe that the fans stepped
- 19:13Speaker 3: on the gas. Pete Cromstone was getting flustered. People were
- 19:16Speaker 3: giving him crap. He thought he had a check swing,
- 19:20Speaker 3: his argument with the ump, and they were just riding PCA.
- 19:22Speaker 3: They were invested in it. So that's one of those
- 19:24Speaker 3: situations where a three-game series, the Padres fans are electric.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Give it up for them. They were great last night.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Home field advantage in a true sense.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Pressure on PCA had a bad postseason last year. It
- 19:34Speaker 2: could be over early this year. Does he respond?
- 19:38Speaker 3: He has to, and he has to get a couple
- 19:39Speaker 3: people on base in front of him. But it's a
- 19:41Speaker 3: fascinating situation that it makes it worse the better you
- 19:45Speaker 3: play in the regular season. If you're the MVP and
- 19:47Speaker 3: you're going to get that award in two weeks, you
- 19:49Speaker 3: can be out of the playoffs in a disappointing fashion
- 19:52Speaker 3: and get the MVP. That's the worst MVP.
- 19:54Speaker 2: That's like Dirk Nowitzki did that one year. He won
- 19:56Speaker 2: the MVP, then had a disappointing early first round exit.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Then he didn't win the MVP and got to the finals.
- 20:01Speaker 3: And the Padres, that home field isn't just the playoffs.
- 20:03Speaker 3: They're not just showing up now.
- 20:04Speaker 2: I looked it up.
- 20:05Speaker 3: 41,003 a game. That's a fantastic number.
- 20:08Speaker 2: For Oh, and it is so gorgeous there. I know
- 20:10Speaker 2: a lot of reporters are rooting for the Padres. They
- 20:13Speaker 2: get to go out and spend a week in San Diego. Okay,
- 20:17Speaker 2: I'm going to go back to the NFL. And the
- 20:18Speaker 2: other end of the spectrum from the Rams is a
- 20:20Speaker 2: team that is playing, I think, above their head. The
- 20:22Speaker 2: Minnesota Vikings are 3-0, and they host the Dolphins this week.
- 20:28Speaker 2: I'm giving them a 4-0. Now, Paul, you said that
- 20:30Speaker 2: we're not allowed to say when things are over. I
- 20:32Speaker 2: am giving Minnesota this victory today. Is that fair? Brian
- 20:36Speaker 2: Flores is going to have this team so fired up
- 20:38Speaker 2: to face the Dolphins, the former team. They're going to
- 20:40Speaker 2: maul them.
- 20:41Speaker 3: And the Dolphins are right on cue. They're doing everything
- 20:43Speaker 3: right by being wrong.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Right. But the problem is, the Vikings are going to
- 20:46Speaker 2: be one of the worst 4-0 teams we've ever seen.
- 20:49Speaker 2: I have a stat. Since 2016, there have been 50
- 20:51Speaker 2: 4-0 teams. Guess where the Vikings rank offensively in EPA
- 20:56Speaker 2: per play and analytic about how you do basically an offense? Last?
- 21:00Speaker 2: They're last. And know where they stand in the team
- 21:03Speaker 2: rankings of offense in the NFL this year?
- 21:05Speaker 3: I'm going to go last?
- 21:06Speaker 2: They're last. So apparently the Vikings cannot move the ball.
- 21:10Speaker 2: They rank last with 238 yards per game. They've been
- 21:13Speaker 2: outgamed by 244 yards on the season. I know you're
- 21:16Speaker 2: a big season cumulative guy. Nothing is working for them offensively,
- 21:20Speaker 2: and they're still 3-0.
- 21:21Speaker 3: So you're saying they're a... Paper mache 4-0.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Absolutely. It reminds you, remember when Kirk Cousins got them
- 21:27Speaker 2: 12 or 13 wins a few years ago? Then they
- 21:30Speaker 2: lost to the Giants in the playoffs.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Sam Darnold did the same thing. Got them into the playoffs, though.
- 21:35Speaker 2: They got them into the playoffs, but that's what I'm
- 21:36Speaker 2: saying about this team. They could be 4-0. They could
- 21:39Speaker 2: be 8-0. They could end up being 13-4. I just
- 21:43Speaker 2: do not trust them as a team. They just happen
- 21:45Speaker 2: to get the right schedule at the right time, and
- 21:46Speaker 2: they do have an awesome defense.
- 21:47Speaker 3: So I'm going to call a 20 here because I'm
- 21:49Speaker 3: going to let this play out. If somehow the Vikings
- 21:51Speaker 3: make it into the playoffs, Under Kyler Murray, and he
- 21:55Speaker 3: plays okay. They're back in quarterback no-man land because are
- 21:59Speaker 3: they going to let Kyler Murray go? Are they going
- 22:00Speaker 3: to sign him for two more years? Are they going
- 22:02Speaker 3: to test the waters? This is the same thing that
- 22:04Speaker 3: happened with Sam Darnold.
- 22:06Speaker 2: And Kirk Cousins, too.
- 22:07Speaker 3: Sam Darnold was awesome in the regular season. He has
- 22:10Speaker 3: a no-show in the playoffs, and they let him go.
- 22:12Speaker 3: They didn't trust the regular season.
- 22:14Speaker 2: This is a Vikings thing now. They win double-digit games,
- 22:16Speaker 2: and then they are totally... They're harmless in the playoffs.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Nobody doesn't want to see Kyler Murray in the wildcard round, Paul.
- 22:23Speaker 2: I'm telling you that right now. I'm jumping ahead to January.
- 22:26Speaker 2: I think the Vikings are going to make the playoffs,
- 22:29Speaker 2: and they're probably going to go out early like they
- 22:32Speaker 2: did under Kirk Cousins.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Okay, which bothers Vikings fans more, watching Sam Darnold win
- 22:36Speaker 3: in the playoffs and win a Super Bowl? We're watching
- 22:38Speaker 3: Case Keenum on Monday night recover his career.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Yeah, with the Bears. With the Bears. Well, I mean,
- 22:43Speaker 2: you could go back. I feel like every former Viking
- 22:45Speaker 2: quarterback looks good somewhere. You know what? I think they're
- 22:49Speaker 2: pretty good now. They're 3-0. They did beat the Bears,
- 22:51Speaker 2: although it was 9-3. So they feel good now. The
- 22:54Speaker 2: defense has been legit. There's no doubt about that. But
- 22:57Speaker 2: I do worry long term. Do they have the quarterback
- 23:00Speaker 2: situation solved? I do not think Kyler Murray played well
- 23:03Speaker 2: on Sunday. I don't think Carson Wentz has played well.
- 23:05Speaker 2: I think that this is a paper mache 4-0, just
- 23:07Speaker 2: as you said. And I am saying, yes, 4-0. Sorry, Dolphins.
- 23:10Speaker 3: You're salty moving on from the Phillies to the Vikings.
- 23:12Speaker 3: How about that, Vikings fans?
- 23:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I know that sounds mean, but we've seen it before,
- 23:16Speaker 2: and it's incredible. They might be the only 4-0 team
- 23:19Speaker 2: in the NFL, and they're not playing like it.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Yep. Coming up next, we're going to get to some
- 23:22Speaker 3: college football with our guy, Jaden Ball, the star running
- 23:26Speaker 3: back of the Florida Gators, the 4-0 Florida Gators, plus
- 23:29Speaker 3: our Sept Heisman. Find out next. This is Not So Fast.
- 23:32Speaker 3: Stick around.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Welcome back to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's
- 23:35Speaker 2: Paul Papps, NBC Sports Now, Peacock. Paul, one of the
- 23:39Speaker 2: great stories of college football this year. The Florida Gators
- 23:42Speaker 2: are back. We love it. 4-0, 2-0 in the SEC,
- 23:45Speaker 2: and of course they are led by Jaden Baugh, star
- 23:48Speaker 2: running back. Jaden, you're having an incredible season. What's Gainesville
- 23:52Speaker 2: like on Monday after you beat a team like Ole Miss?
- 23:55Speaker 6: Very exciting. In the facility, everybody's ready, trying to get
- 23:59Speaker 6: back to work. And It's just a little different. You
- 24:04Speaker 6: feel the atmosphere. You're just ready to do it again
- 24:06Speaker 6: for them.
- 24:07Speaker 3: You know, your head coach, John Summerall, he's a character.
- 24:09Speaker 3: We see him in these press conferences. Jayden, I don't
- 24:12Speaker 3: ever think he blinks when he's talking to the media.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Is he super intense during practice, or is he more
- 24:17Speaker 3: laid back? I've heard mixed reports.
- 24:19Speaker 6: I mean, yeah, he's intense, but he's somewhat laid back
- 24:23Speaker 6: as well. He'll always come around and, you know, come
- 24:26Speaker 6: up to me and be like, what's up, Coach? I'm like,
- 24:28Speaker 6: what's up, Coach? I look at him a little weird because,
- 24:31Speaker 6: you know, that's not normal. But other than that, yeah,
- 24:35Speaker 6: he cool.
- 24:36Speaker 2: I heard you say something about a Bloody Tuesday practice
- 24:39Speaker 2: or a Grin Tuesday. What's that about?
- 24:42Speaker 6: Bloody Tuesday is just like everybody knows what's coming. Everybody's
- 24:46Speaker 6: going to be physical. You know, we're hitting. Because it's
- 24:50Speaker 6: not going to be too much hitting during the week,
- 24:52Speaker 6: but that's one day where Coach, they want us to
- 24:54Speaker 6: go Full out. They want us to hit top speeds.
- 25:00Speaker 6: They just want to hear pads hitting each other. That's
- 25:05Speaker 6: a day you've got to get your body ready for.
- 25:07Speaker 6: Be very mentally ready for it, too.
- 25:09Speaker 3: Coach is not going to listen to us, but I
- 25:11Speaker 3: would give you those days off because they need you
- 25:12Speaker 3: on Saturday.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Let me ask you something. You've been in.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Gainesville for a while. When the new coach comes there,
- 25:18Speaker 3: people have been off on Florida football the past couple years,
- 25:21Speaker 3: but it feels like everybody's back in. When did you
- 25:23Speaker 3: notice something was changing here with this program?
- 25:26Speaker 6: As soon as he walked in, honestly, he just had
- 25:29Speaker 6: that look in his eye, and he was just more
- 25:31Speaker 6: welcoming to any, you know, thoughts or, you know, ideas
- 25:36Speaker 6: of things we should keep. Like, he came in, the
- 25:40Speaker 6: first thing he asked, he's like, what should we keep
- 25:41Speaker 6: around here? And we told him the nutrition to staff
- 25:44Speaker 6: just because, like, they're great, and they've been doing so
- 25:47Speaker 6: much for us to get our bodies back right. So
- 25:50Speaker 6: I just seen so much of, you know, improvement, improvement,
- 25:54Speaker 6: and how he came in, we were just ready to go.
- 25:57Speaker 5: And I was like, yeah, I got to play for him.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Jaden, actually take us back to that process. You know,
- 26:02Speaker 2: your decision to stay at Florida got a lot of news.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Did you meet the coach and make the decision after that?
- 26:08Speaker 2: Or what happened exactly?
- 26:10Speaker 6: Well, I met, well, I met coach right after the season. And,
- 26:17Speaker 6: you know, then when I break, as when I break,
- 26:19Speaker 6: it was just a little rumors and stuff going around,
- 26:21Speaker 6: like the transfer portal and, me going somewhere else, but
- 26:25Speaker 6: Coach Jim ended up coming to my grandmother's house for Christmas,
- 26:31Speaker 6: and it was like his dad had passed, I think,
- 26:35Speaker 6: a week or so ago, and he came, and he
- 26:38Speaker 6: was like, my dad want me here, and that just
- 26:39Speaker 6: showed me so much character, and it gave me so
- 26:42Speaker 6: much respect for him and his father as well, and
- 26:46Speaker 6: my grandmother, damn, they loved it, the The first hour
- 26:50Speaker 6: or so, we didn't even talk about football. We were
- 26:51Speaker 6: just talking about life and eating food, chilling, because he
- 26:55Speaker 6: brought his family.
- 26:56Speaker 5: He brought the dog, his mother, the kids, and the wife.
- 26:59Speaker 6: It was just a good experience for all of us.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Coaches are smart. If I'm recruiting you or trying to
- 27:04Speaker 3: keep you at Florida, I'm eating second helpings from Grandma.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Did Grandma have the three hats and put the hat on,
- 27:10Speaker 3: like keeping the Florida hat on right there?
- 27:11Speaker 6: Yeah, Grandma, she loved it. She was just smiling the
- 27:16Speaker 6: whole time, honestly.
- 27:18Speaker 2: All right, Jayden, we're going to do you a favor. Now,
- 27:19Speaker 2: you might not know this, but many years ago, we
- 27:22Speaker 2: helped Derrick Henry with his Heisman pose. He was having
- 27:25Speaker 2: some issues, and Paul wanted to show you his take
- 27:27Speaker 2: on the pose.
- 27:28Speaker 3: Well, before we start, have you practiced the Heisman pose
- 27:30Speaker 3: at home? And I know you might be saving it
- 27:32Speaker 3: for maybe the Texas game or one of the upcoming games.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Have you practiced it?
- 27:36Speaker 5: No, no, I just do it.
- 27:37Speaker 3: Oh, so you got it down. You don't need any help.
- 27:40Speaker 5: I mean, it would be best to see it from you, though,
- 27:42Speaker 5: you know?
- 27:43Speaker 3: Well, see, now, I never played football. Just remember, the
- 27:45Speaker 3: hand's got to be out and the eye's got to
- 27:46Speaker 3: be back. You've got to really sell it, Jayden. You're physical.
- 27:50Speaker 3: I can't do it. But when you get that run
- 27:52Speaker 3: against a big-time opponent in October, don't drop the ball.
- 27:56Speaker 3: Keep the ball tucked in tight and just go, Make
- 27:59Speaker 3: it happen.
- 27:59Speaker 5: I got you.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Yeah, don't do that, Jaden. You don't want to look
- 28:02Speaker 2: like him. Okay, we have a couple of gratuitous questions
- 28:05Speaker 2: here at the end. So we're two middle-aged guys. I
- 28:08Speaker 2: weigh about 196. Paul's at about 170. Do you think
- 28:11Speaker 2: the two of us could tackle you in an elevator?
- 28:14Speaker 2: Could we get you down?
- 28:16Speaker 5: Probably not.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the right answer.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Okay, fair.
- 28:22Speaker 3: But we seem like nice guys, so you'd probably take
- 28:24Speaker 3: it easy on us.
- 28:26Speaker 5: I mean, taking it easy won't help y'all get any better.
- 28:30Speaker 2: It worked out well.
- 28:31Speaker 3: All right, we do a thing here called no such
- 28:33Speaker 3: thing as a dumb question. It's called such thing as
- 28:35Speaker 3: a dumb question. Quarterbacks like to look off the defenders.
- 28:38Speaker 3: I was wondering, as a running back, you've been doing
- 28:40Speaker 3: this a long time, when you get back in the formation,
- 28:43Speaker 3: do you sometimes look one way and the play is
- 28:46Speaker 3: for you to carry the ball the other way to
- 28:48Speaker 3: try to sell the defenders?
- 28:50Speaker 6: Well, honestly, I somewhat try to just look everywhere so
- 28:53Speaker 6: it won't give it like a telltale sign. Just because,
- 28:55Speaker 6: you know, I feel like as football gets more advanced,
- 28:59Speaker 6: they look for more, like, little details. And, like, I
- 29:04Speaker 6: feel like linebackers, me actually playing linebacker when I was younger,
- 29:08Speaker 6: I would look for, like, telltale signs from a running
- 29:10Speaker 6: back or quarterbacks or anything just to get the little edge.
- 29:13Speaker 5: So I try to look everywhere, honestly.
- 29:16Speaker 3: That's smart.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Awesome. Thank you, Jaden. Good luck the rest of the season.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Huge games coming up. We can't wait to watch. Thank
- 29:23Speaker 2: you very much.
- 29:24Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 29:25Speaker 2: That was great.
- 29:26Speaker 3: That was good stuff. He was very nice because he
- 29:28Speaker 3: could kill both of us in an elevator, no problem.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I mean, listen, I think he was impressed
- 29:32Speaker 2: with the physicality of your Heisman. Right.
- 29:34Speaker 3: I look like I could sell the Heisman. I don't
- 29:36Speaker 3: look like I played football.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Yeah, you're good in a still when you're just standing still.
- 29:40Speaker 2: when you actually start to move, you can tell it's
- 29:41Speaker 2: not all working.
- 29:42Speaker 3: And I have trouble getting out of that Heisman pose.
- 29:43Speaker 3: Once I go low, it gets.
- 29:44Speaker 2: You can hear the creak. I don't know if Jaden
- 29:46Speaker 2: picked that up over the air.
- 29:47Speaker 3: It's great to have Jaden on Not So Fast. Pabst
- 29:49Speaker 3: and Perloff here. Let's stay with this topic. We do
- 29:52Speaker 3: a thing here called Decept Heisman. Who would have won
- 29:55Speaker 3: the Heisman trophy just for this month of college football? Perloff,
- 29:58Speaker 3: I'm going to go first here, and I'm going to
- 30:00Speaker 3: go really, really obvious because you shouldn't overthink this one.
- 30:02Speaker 3: Jeremiah Smith, the OSU wide receiver, he's everything we thought
- 30:06Speaker 3: he was going to be and more. If you watched
- 30:07Speaker 3: him against Illinois, it looked like your athletic uncle playing
- 30:11Speaker 3: with a bunch of little cousins in the backyard. He
- 30:13Speaker 3: looked like he was toying with them. He was going
- 30:14Speaker 3: past people as if they were wearing sponges on their feet.
- 30:17Speaker 3: Jeremiah Smith feels like the biggest sure thing at the
- 30:20Speaker 3: wide receiver position in a long time, and he's not
- 30:22Speaker 3: easing into the season. He's just wiping people off the floor.
- 30:25Speaker 3: It's fantastic. He's your septizement winner. And I have almost
- 30:29Speaker 3: no doubt as these games get bigger, he's going to
- 30:31Speaker 3: get better.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Well, I don't know. He's got some tough games coming up.
- 30:34Speaker 2: First of all, you never win the Heisman in September.
- 30:37Speaker 2: So you don't want to do this. But I feel
- 30:39Speaker 2: like he's going to have some Iowa to start with.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Don't you just double or triple team Jeremiah Smith?
- 30:45Speaker 3: I think at some point you're going to do so.
- 30:46Speaker 3: But he's one of those guys in a tight game.
- 30:48Speaker 3: He needs a tight game. He needs a tight game
- 30:50Speaker 3: against Iowa this weekend where... not just 200 yards at halftime,
- 30:55Speaker 3: the play to win the game.
- 30:56Speaker 2: So if you're just doing September, remember, the Heisman's a
- 30:59Speaker 2: narrative award, and who's been the narrative star? Of this season,
- 31:02Speaker 2: Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor.
- 31:04Speaker 5: Good call.
- 31:04Speaker 2: The numbers are insane, too. Fourteen touchdowns, two picks. Came
- 31:08Speaker 2: in with not that much hype, some hype, but he
- 31:10Speaker 2: has exceeded it. I think if you were going to
- 31:12Speaker 2: give out the trophy today, it would be a hard
- 31:14Speaker 2: vote because Kamario Taylor has been the story of the year.
- 31:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm with you. Kamario Taylor is really making people
- 31:19Speaker 3: look at that team. The next month is going to
- 31:21Speaker 3: decide it. Will he be a September guy who we go,
- 31:24Speaker 3: remember him? Remember when they were 3-0, 4-0? But if
- 31:27Speaker 3: he's like 7-1, then he's got something.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Well, we can do this in September. It's going to
- 31:30Speaker 2: be two people. Then October, usually someone different in the
- 31:34Speaker 2: way college football goes.
- 31:34Speaker 3: And everybody loves the October Heisman.
- 31:38Speaker 2: Yeah, sick of Heisman poses instead of Heisman sayings. All right,
- 31:41Speaker 2: coming up next, Dan Patrick talked to one of the
- 31:44Speaker 2: best players in the playoffs. Exciting news, maybe the best
- 31:47Speaker 2: pitcher in baseball. That's next. Not so fast.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Do you apologize to batters if you hit them?
- 31:58Speaker 4: Um, it depends, you know, obviously if you accidentally ride
- 32:03Speaker 4: one up and in and it catches a guy pretty high.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Sure.
- 32:07Speaker 4: I'll apologize for that. You know, send over a nice
- 32:09Speaker 4: bottle of bourbon or do something to apologize.
- 32:13Speaker 1: But wait, wait, wait, you'll buy somebody a bottle of
- 32:16Speaker 1: liquor if you accidentally hit them.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:19Speaker 4: And like, if I, if I hit a guy in
- 32:21Speaker 4: like the head or something, yeah, that's, That's like, hey,
- 32:25Speaker 4: I'm sorry. This is on me. I hope we don't
- 32:27Speaker 4: have no hard feelings. It wasn't on purpose.
- 32:32Speaker 3: Back on the clip joint, Paxton Perloff here. That was
- 32:34Speaker 3: 6-7 Jacob Mizorowski of the Brewers. The Brewers are in
- 32:37Speaker 3: great shape. They're not even in the playoffs yet because
- 32:39Speaker 3: they can let him rest a little bit. Next week,
- 32:41Speaker 3: it's all them. Fascinating here because baseball has a lot
- 32:44Speaker 3: of etiquette. And if you notice, usually when a pitcher
- 32:47Speaker 3: hits a batter, there's very little like, I'm sorry. They
- 32:50Speaker 3: rarely go shake a hand. This isn't Little League baseball.
- 32:52Speaker 3: Once in a while, you'll get one of those My bads.
- 32:55Speaker 3: Almost like when you're merging traffic and you cut someone off,
- 32:57Speaker 3: you give them the my bad. But the fact that
- 32:59Speaker 3: Mizorowski sends over some booze, some hooch.
- 33:01Speaker 2: Amazing. First of all, I'm amazed that he's old enough
- 33:03Speaker 2: to buy booze. I guess I've never seen him without
- 33:06Speaker 2: his hat on. Was that Mizorowski or was that his
- 33:08Speaker 2: 12-year-old brother? He's a young-looking man.
- 33:11Speaker 3: Yeah, he does not have a shaving deal because he
- 33:13Speaker 3: doesn't shave.
- 33:13Speaker 2: He looks so nice. I'm not surprised that he's apologizing
- 33:17Speaker 2: a little bit for hitting guys. I want my ace
- 33:19Speaker 2: to be a little more gnarly, a little more manly man.
- 33:22Speaker 3: Well, I find this interesting because it's pure baseball etiquette.
- 33:25Speaker 3: You don't apologize during the game because you don't do
- 33:27Speaker 3: that in front of the crowd. But you may send
- 33:29Speaker 3: over to his hotel with the three-game stretch in Milwaukee.
- 33:32Speaker 3: I'll call the local booze place and send him over
- 33:34Speaker 3: some good stuff.
- 33:34Speaker 2: But did Nolan Ryan do that? Did Roger Clemens do that?
- 33:37Speaker 2: Because it's a long, you know, especially in baseball, it's
- 33:39Speaker 2: a long series. You're going to face that guy again.
- 33:41Speaker 2: I would throw it at his head and then I'm
- 33:43Speaker 2: not going to send a gift.
- 33:44Speaker 3: No, I could, not like a muffin basket, but if
- 33:47Speaker 3: you accidentally go toward someone's head and you say like,
- 33:50Speaker 3: hey man, nothing personal. It does feel like a different era.
- 33:53Speaker 3: And Nolan Ryan would send over like a bill for something.
- 33:55Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I don't like it, Paul. I want my
- 33:58Speaker 2: guy to have, first of all, a mustache, a little
- 34:00Speaker 2: more facial hair. Right. That was way too clean cut
- 34:03Speaker 2: for my taste.
- 34:04Speaker 3: So Mizorowski can throw 105, but he's got to be
- 34:06Speaker 3: more intimidating.
- 34:06Speaker 2: His throwing is so nasty, but his persona is so
- 34:10Speaker 2: boy next door. I didn't get all that together, and
- 34:13Speaker 2: the apology, I don't like it, Paul.
- 34:14Speaker 3: Nobody chops up baseball like that so fast. All right,
- 34:17Speaker 3: let's get to it. Earlier on the Dan Patrick Show,
- 34:19Speaker 3: Devin McCourty, former defensive back for the Patriots, joined the show,
- 34:22Speaker 3: and he talked about playing for Belichick and He played
- 34:24Speaker 3: for Belichick with his twin brother, Jason McCourty. And how
- 34:27Speaker 3: did Bill deal with that?
- 34:30Speaker 1: Could you have gotten into his uniform and he got
- 34:33Speaker 1: into your uniform and nobody would have known the difference?
- 34:36Speaker 3: Especially Belichick. He would not have known at all until
- 34:39Speaker 3: the play started.
- 34:40Speaker 5: And then he would be like, what the hell is
- 34:41Speaker 5: going on? Then he would have known the difference right away.
- 34:44Speaker 3: That's fantastic. They were very good players. They weren't like
- 34:47Speaker 3: a novelty act. These are both very good players.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Very good.
- 34:49Speaker 3: Long NFL careers, the both of them. But the fact
- 34:52Speaker 3: that Bill Belichick He seems like a guy who doesn't
- 34:54Speaker 3: learn your name really early in training camp. He calls
- 34:56Speaker 3: you 47 until you have a couple starts.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Right. I think Tom Brady had to win a Super
- 35:00Speaker 2: Bowl for him to realize who that was. One of
- 35:03Speaker 2: the most anxiety-provoking things for the media, especially during Super
- 35:06Speaker 2: Bowl week, is telling which McCourty brother you're talking to.
- 35:09Speaker 2: It's happened to me many times on Radio Row. They
- 35:12Speaker 2: are really identical. I mean, that is not a joke.
- 35:14Speaker 2: Even way more so than Rondé and Tiki, who are
- 35:17Speaker 2: also identical.
- 35:18Speaker 3: We've also worked with Rondé and Tiki, and they don't
- 35:20Speaker 3: really look that much alike, like.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Oh, I don't know about that.
- 35:24Speaker 3: If you get to know them a little bit, they
- 35:26Speaker 3: look completely different. But the McCourty's, I got nothing.
- 35:29Speaker 2: Exactly. Even Belichick does different. Although I did see Devin
- 35:33Speaker 2: was talking a lot of trash about his brother's game.
- 35:35Speaker 2: He's like, I'm the good one. You can tell by
- 35:37Speaker 2: the quality of play.
- 35:37Speaker 3: Should the McCourty's have to wear socially their football jerseys?
- 35:41Speaker 2: Well, that's not going to help.
- 35:42Speaker 3: Yeah, because you put D. McCourty, J.
- 35:43Speaker 5: McCourty.
- 35:44Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 35:44Speaker 3: And then you can help us out.
- 35:45Speaker 2: A little bit. Socially, or what if they're wearing a suit,
- 35:47Speaker 2: which they often do on TV? Can they still have
- 35:50Speaker 2: the nameplate? Yeah, I don't think they're going to do that.
- 35:53Speaker 2: They seem to enjoy this, and I think they have
- 35:55Speaker 2: done switcheroos before.
- 35:56Speaker 3: You know what's great about these guys? They were both
- 35:58Speaker 3: very good players. Sometimes you have brothers who play in
- 36:00Speaker 3: the league, and one's fantastic, and the other is just
- 36:03Speaker 3: kind of a borderline guy. It's like you want your
- 36:06Speaker 3: brother to be equal to you, and they're pretty equal careers.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I know Tiki a little bit. I worked with
- 36:11Speaker 2: him in I do do the joke all the time
- 36:14Speaker 2: that he's Rondé. He doesn't find it funny, though.
- 36:16Speaker 3: No, he doesn't. The seventh time he didn't find it funny?
- 36:18Speaker 5: No, no, no.
- 36:18Speaker 2: But I do always tell him that you are a
- 36:20Speaker 2: huge Tiki Barber should be in the Hall of Fame guy.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Rondé is in the Hall of Fame.
- 36:23Speaker 3: I could do an hour on Tiki Barber in the
- 36:25Speaker 3: Hall of Fame, but nobody is. No one's picking up
- 36:26Speaker 3: that traction with my bit there.
- 36:28Speaker 2: No, not at all. All right, let's go back to
- 36:30Speaker 2: baseball for our next clip. John Fanta is on the sideline. Padres,
- 36:35Speaker 2: Cubs doing yeoman's work. He talked to Fernando Tatis and
- 36:37Speaker 2: asked him, what was better, the home run or scoring
- 36:40Speaker 2: on a stolen base?
- 36:43Speaker 3: That's a tough question, man.
- 36:44Speaker 7: I go probably running around the bases. You know, you
- 36:47Speaker 7: feel the stadium, also the home run was going crazy.
- 36:49Speaker 7: Everybody was going crazy. The atmosphere here was amazing and
- 36:53Speaker 7: all credit to the fans, man. They gave us that
- 36:56Speaker 7: extra push and wow, it was amazing to be out here.
- 36:59Speaker 3: You know, it's great to see him on national TV
- 37:01Speaker 3: making plays like that.
- 37:02Speaker 2: John Fanta?
- 37:03Speaker 3: Yeah, John Fanta, of course. But Tatis Jr., he was
- 37:06Speaker 3: a superstar four or five years ago. He had the
- 37:08Speaker 3: injuries and the suspension and he just kind of came
- 37:11Speaker 3: back to earth. Still a very good player. But what
- 37:13Speaker 3: you saw last night is pure star power.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Oh, no. I don't like to root for non-Phillies that much.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Fernando Tatis is one of my guys. Transpixing. Yeah, he's
- 37:21Speaker 2: one of those baseball players. Just his style and even
- 37:23Speaker 2: this play last night. I don't think there are a
- 37:25Speaker 2: lot of players who have the same level of excitement.
- 37:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:28Speaker 2: And he's another guy you kind of root for even
- 37:31Speaker 2: if you don't like the Padres. Now, Machado is the opposite.
- 37:34Speaker 2: He's a guy I do not root for even though
- 37:36Speaker 2: he's an excellent player. Yeah, I mean, he's had sort
- 37:38Speaker 2: of a career that's been up and down the way
- 37:40Speaker 2: he's left teams. But Tatis has almost universal praise. And
- 37:44Speaker 2: you're a Cubs fan, and he kind of beat you.
- 37:46Speaker 2: Does he bother you?
- 37:46Speaker 3: No, I think, like you said, there are certain players
- 37:48Speaker 3: you almost give respect for. If you want to go
- 37:50Speaker 3: a generation ago, remember Eric Davis from the Reds.
- 37:52Speaker 2: He could do everything. Oh, he was awesome.
- 37:53Speaker 3: And you just like those guys, and you hate seeing
- 37:55Speaker 3: them get hurt because their career is just peak. And
- 37:58Speaker 3: if you want to go back even further, back in
- 37:59Speaker 3: the day, Mike Schmidt used to destroy the Cubs.
- 38:02Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 38:03Speaker 3: He went four for five every single game. But you
- 38:05Speaker 3: have to respect and say, hey, that's a great ball player.
- 38:07Speaker 3: I wish we had him, but we don't.
- 38:09Speaker 2: I think Shohei Ohtani's that guy. Totally. I think everybody
- 38:12Speaker 2: roots for Shohei, even if you hate the Dodgers and
- 38:14Speaker 2: what they're doing for baseball. Is it quite the level
- 38:16Speaker 2: of Michael Jordan? Because I'll tell you one thing. In
- 38:18Speaker 2: the 80s and 90s, I was a Michael Jordan fan.
- 38:20Speaker 2: You had to. And everyone I knew was. And that
- 38:22Speaker 2: didn't mean I liked the Bulls, but I liked Michael Jordan.
- 38:24Speaker 3: Well, it means you know the game of basketball. That's
- 38:26Speaker 3: what it really means. I mean, it does. If you
- 38:28Speaker 3: appreciate the sport, you appreciate greatness.
- 38:29Speaker 2: But there are other great players. I hated Larry Bird,
- 38:31Speaker 2: but Michael Jordan was so dominant. Yeah, of course. I
- 38:35Speaker 2: was a Sixer fan. I hated Larry Bird. But I
- 38:36Speaker 2: think Tatis, guys who are really athletic and really demonstrative,
- 38:40Speaker 2: that helps.
- 38:41Speaker 5: All right.
- 38:41Speaker 3: It's time for the rando. This is one of our
- 38:43Speaker 3: favorite clips of the week. It's taken over social media.
- 38:45Speaker 3: Northwestern Football built a new stadium. They spent $ 875 million
- 38:49Speaker 3: on their new stadium. Here's their locker room. Guess why
- 38:52Speaker 3: they didn't spend $ 900 million? Because take a look at
- 38:54Speaker 3: the opposing locker room. Look at that.
- 38:58Speaker 2: It's so narrow.
- 39:00Speaker 3: That looks like an OSHA violation. There's wires hanging down.
- 39:02Speaker 3: That's brand new.
- 39:03Speaker 2: How's a football team going to even fit into that thing?
- 39:05Speaker 3: Now, some people are trying to shame Northwestern Football by
- 39:08Speaker 3: not spending on the opposing locker room. I commend them.
- 39:11Speaker 3: You want to make it as comfortable as possible for
- 39:13Speaker 3: the opposition.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:15Speaker 3: These seats, are you going to catch your leg on
- 39:16Speaker 3: a sharp thing?
- 39:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:17Speaker 3: Is this carpet new?
- 39:19Speaker 2: New-ish?
- 39:20Speaker 3: You know, what does it smell like in there?
- 39:21Speaker 2: I don't know. I've kind of made fun of Northwestern
- 39:23Speaker 2: football on the show a little bit. Why are they
- 39:25Speaker 2: building such a nice home locker room? For what? For football?
- 39:27Speaker 2: Or is that where the journalists work? I don't understand.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Do they want to be Indiana? Is that what's happening here?
- 39:33Speaker 3: Well, I don't know. I think we're in an era
- 39:35Speaker 3: where they could be Indiana. If you find one or
- 39:36Speaker 3: two benefactors, they have a lot of money you could spend. Now,
- 39:39Speaker 3: Northwestern is going to have trouble getting in all the
- 39:41Speaker 3: athletes they want to get in.
- 39:42Speaker 2: Oh, like Notre Dame?
- 39:43Speaker 3: With academics.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:44Speaker 3: But, you know. Northwestern football just wants to be above average.
- 39:48Speaker 3: They just want to be seven, eight wins a year
- 39:50Speaker 3: and then maybe have one of those years where you
- 39:52Speaker 3: go to a Rose Bowl every once in a while.
- 39:54Speaker 2: I think that stadium says at least college football playoff.
- 39:57Speaker 2: I'm sorry, the locker room says college football playoff.
- 39:59Speaker 3: But the stadium is under 45,000 people. That means college
- 40:02Speaker 3: football playoff appearance.
- 40:04Speaker 2: Yeah, at best.
- 40:05Speaker 3: At best. All right, coming up next, new segment. A
- 40:07Speaker 3: lot of people here love sports. We were watching sports
- 40:10Speaker 3: with them yesterday. Questions from the back room. We have
- 40:13Speaker 3: no idea what's coming. It's going to be questionable. Stick around.
- 40:15Speaker 3: Not so fast.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Welcome back. Not so fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Pabst,
- 40:21Speaker 2: NBC Sports Now, Peacock. We're going to talk more baseball
- 40:25Speaker 2: in a minute. But first, Paul, I understand there's a
- 40:26Speaker 2: new segment.
- 40:27Speaker 3: Hot new segment, Perloff. It's called Questions from the Back Room.
- 40:31Speaker 3: Very exciting. Hosted by Dan Patrick Show editor... not-so-fast correspondent
- 40:36Speaker 3: and popular host of The Cutoff, the baseball podcast.
- 40:39Speaker 2: Love it.
- 40:39Speaker 3: That is sweeping the country. Dan Gardella joining us. Great
- 40:42Speaker 3: to have you, Dan.
- 40:42Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for having me, guys.
- 40:43Speaker 3: A lot of energy in the back room. I was
- 40:45Speaker 3: back there minutes ago, and I heard not just debate
- 40:49Speaker 3: but arguments going on. Is that your first question, or
- 40:51Speaker 3: are you saving that one?
- 40:52Speaker 8: We're going to save that. We call that a tease
- 40:53Speaker 8: in the business. We have a couple questions from the
- 40:55Speaker 8: back room here. We have a lot of thoughts as well,
- 40:57Speaker 8: so we figured we'd throw some at you guys and
- 40:59Speaker 8: see what you think.
- 41:00Speaker 1: Great.
- 41:00Speaker 8: All right, let's start with the first one. So in November,
- 41:03Speaker 8: a John Madden movie coming out. A little bit of speculation,
- 41:06Speaker 8: a lot of talk. Nick Cage is the main actor
- 41:09Speaker 8: in that. So I ask you guys, what is the
- 41:12Speaker 8: most accurate sports movie you've seen? It could be from
- 41:14Speaker 8: the plot, the actors looking like the athletes themselves.
- 41:17Speaker 2: What do you guys think?
- 41:18Speaker 3: I'll go first. I think it's Hoosiers. It's based on
- 41:21Speaker 3: the Milan Miracle in 1954, high school, the movie Hoosiers.
- 41:25Speaker 3: Bobby Plump was the actual guy who hit the shot
- 41:28Speaker 3: to win the title. And he held the ball for
- 41:30Speaker 3: like four minutes. And if you watch the end of
- 41:32Speaker 3: the game, Jimmy Chitwood holds the ball for like 20 seconds.
- 41:34Speaker 3: So it's similar-ish. And they definitely look like 50s basketball players.
- 41:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know, Paul. I feel like you want
- 41:40Speaker 2: Hoosiers to be a real-life story. I thought that was
- 41:42Speaker 2: pretty dramatized. How about when Will Smith played Ali? I
- 41:45Speaker 2: thought Will Smith did a good Ali. And we actually
- 41:48Speaker 2: know that happened exactly like it happened in real life.
- 41:50Speaker 3: I think that's a good call. The boxing scenes in
- 41:52Speaker 3: that were not over-the-top. They were very true.
- 41:54Speaker 8: Yeah, Chadwick Boseman, 42. I'm a baseball guy. That's the
- 41:57Speaker 8: one I always defer to.
- 41:58Speaker 2: Let's stick with baseball.
- 42:00Speaker 8: The MLB playoffs started yesterday. Four games, another four games today.
- 42:04Speaker 8: This one was actually asked by Jack, one of my
- 42:05Speaker 8: fellow editors sitting right here.
- 42:07Speaker 3: So he's giving a wave.
- 42:07Speaker 5: Shout outs.
- 42:09Speaker 8: What are your most memorable MLB moments? I think I
- 42:11Speaker 8: know Paul's, but I figure I asked both of you.
- 42:13Speaker 3: Well, mine's kind of weird because I went to games
- 42:15Speaker 3: three and four of the Cubs World Series in 2016.
- 42:18Speaker 3: They lost both those games. So it started as a
- 42:21Speaker 3: great day became a painful mass of drunkenness and walking
- 42:24Speaker 3: home from Wrigley Field two nights in a row. They
- 42:27Speaker 3: ended up winning the World Series, but those two days were...
- 42:30Speaker 3: a mixed bag of emotions.
- 42:31Speaker 2: You know, I actually have a thought. When I first
- 42:34Speaker 2: started a Dan Patrick show, the Phillies won the World Series.
- 42:36Speaker 2: They beat the Rays. And I went down to Philadelphia
- 42:39Speaker 2: for the parade and called into the Dan Patrick show.
- 42:42Speaker 2: And I remember Paul and Dan and everybody was having
- 42:45Speaker 2: so much fun because I think I got lost. And
- 42:47Speaker 2: I was on some random Philadelphia street about three blocks
- 42:50Speaker 2: away from the parade. And I said, Dan, I I
- 42:53Speaker 2: think there's something wrong with the parade. I just saw
- 42:55Speaker 2: basically a guy drive by in a van. Is that
- 42:58Speaker 2: the parade?
- 42:58Speaker 3: It was the parade's fault, not Perloff's fault.
- 43:00Speaker 8: No bedlam at the bank, Perloff?
- 43:03Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, that was pretty cool. But listen, I go
- 43:05Speaker 2: way back. You know, I remember Mike Schmidt there. So,
- 43:08Speaker 2: you know, for me, like my core memories are the vet,
- 43:11Speaker 2: which you probably don't have never even heard of.
- 43:13Speaker 8: See, I wouldn't know what it was, except I was
- 43:15Speaker 8: born and raised in Phillies baseball. My dad was a
- 43:17Speaker 8: Philly fan. So, you know, I got my education. I'm young,
- 43:21Speaker 8: but I'm wise, as they say.
- 43:22Speaker 5: All right.
- 43:23Speaker 8: Let's go to the last one. Now, this was the
- 43:25Speaker 8: one that had a lot of arguments back here. We
- 43:27Speaker 8: actually had to pause it when Paul walked in because
- 43:29Speaker 8: we wanted to save it. If there was one sport
- 43:32Speaker 8: that you could be better at than everybody else in
- 43:35Speaker 8: the world, which sport would it be and why?
- 43:39Speaker 3: You know, I'm purposely going to take off the high-paying
- 43:41Speaker 3: sports because I think that's too easy. I think it'd
- 43:44Speaker 3: be surfing. I think I'd like to be the best
- 43:46Speaker 3: surfer in the world. Seems like lifestyle-wise, that's about as
- 43:48Speaker 3: good as it gets. You get up, you go to
- 43:50Speaker 3: the beach, you go to the surfing competitions. And then
- 43:53Speaker 3: you eat fish tacos and take naps. I mean, I
- 43:55Speaker 3: think I'd like to be the best surfer in the world.
- 43:57Speaker 2: That's a terrible idea. Sharks.
- 44:00Speaker 3: But not from the best. The second best guy is
- 44:02Speaker 3: getting eaten by sharks.
- 44:03Speaker 2: A shark doesn't know if it's Kelly Slater up there.
- 44:05Speaker 3: I think I would never. I'm hanging with Pam Anderson.
- 44:08Speaker 3: He's shark meat.
- 44:09Speaker 2: So I was thinking about something like pool like that,
- 44:12Speaker 2: but you could go anywhere. I think golf would be
- 44:15Speaker 2: the best because unlike basketball, baseball, football, You can play
- 44:19Speaker 2: until you're 70. Obviously, Tom Watson almost won the British
- 44:23Speaker 2: Open at 59. So I think being the best golfer
- 44:27Speaker 2: ever would be. Except, Paul, you always have a question.
- 44:30Speaker 2: What does a golfer do when he retires?
- 44:31Speaker 3: Yeah, if you retire as a golfer, you go get
- 44:33Speaker 3: a desk job somewhere.
- 44:34Speaker 2: No, but to be great at golf, can you imagine
- 44:36Speaker 2: how cool that would be? Just walk up on any
- 44:38Speaker 2: foursome and drive the green, and you're all set.
- 44:41Speaker 8: And I'm very bad at golf, so I think that's
- 44:43Speaker 8: part of the reason. Yeah, the arguments here were golf.
- 44:47Speaker 8: It was basketball. It was a little bit back and forth.
- 44:49Speaker 3: I went basketball.
- 44:50Speaker 8: If I have the chance to make $ 60 million a year,
- 44:52Speaker 8: I'm taking that. And then I can go golf later. Like,
- 44:54Speaker 8: that's always there, like you guys just said. So a
- 44:56Speaker 8: lot of argument back here, but some good stuff.
- 44:58Speaker 3: Yeah, great argument. Like that. Good to hear you, Dan.
- 45:00Speaker 3: Great to have you on the show. Can't wait to
- 45:01Speaker 3: hear the next podcast about the MLB playoffs.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks, guys.
- 45:04Speaker 4: See ya.
- 45:04Speaker 2: All right, well, that was fun. Yeah. Dan Gardella. We'll see. OK,
- 45:12Speaker 2: let's look at the matchups for later today. Philly at
- 45:15Speaker 2: Atlanta at 2 p.m. Eastern. White Sox Astros. Then tonight
- 45:19Speaker 2: we got the Red Sox, the Yankees and the Cubs
- 45:22Speaker 2: at the Padres. So, Paul, we're one game in, but
- 45:25Speaker 2: teams can be eliminated. What's the name of the game
- 45:28Speaker 2: we're playing?
- 45:29Speaker 3: Clinch or clench. Will they clinch a spot in the
- 45:31Speaker 3: playoffs or will they clench up? And bow out. I'm
- 45:33Speaker 3: really worried about the graphic for this segment.
- 45:35Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Okay, why don't you start? Who is bowing
- 45:38Speaker 2: out after today?
- 45:39Speaker 3: You know, the Red Sox don't have the bats. And,
- 45:42Speaker 3: you know, the Yankees don't look fantastic without Judge out long-term.
- 45:46Speaker 3: But short-term, they look great. And Schlittler was awesome. Ben
- 45:49Speaker 3: Rice was awesome. Not enough bats for the Red Sox.
- 45:51Speaker 3: I think they're done. And the Astros seem uninspired. I
- 45:54Speaker 3: don't know how they got to the playoffs in the
- 45:55Speaker 3: first place. They were outscored this season, which should be
- 45:59Speaker 3: wrong to be in the playoffs. So the Astros seem uninspired.
- 46:01Speaker 3: Not a lot of juice in the building. I think
- 46:03Speaker 3: the White Sox take him down.
- 46:04Speaker 2: Okay, I'm actually keeping the Red Sox alive. I think
- 46:09Speaker 2: they win Game 2 and lose Game 3. And I'm
- 46:12Speaker 2: actually keeping the Phillies alive, even though I said they're done.
- 46:15Speaker 2: They are done.
- 46:16Speaker 3: You called them done a half an hour ago.
- 46:18Speaker 2: Because of the Phillies. They're absolutely going to lose Game 3.
- 46:21Speaker 2: They don't want to put Andrew Perloff out of his
- 46:24Speaker 2: misery in two games. They want to make as much
- 46:26Speaker 2: baseball pain... as possible, and Christopher Sanchez is going today,
- 46:29Speaker 2: and he's awesome.
- 46:30Speaker 3: Big picture done, small picture, they're winning tonight, so it
- 46:32Speaker 3: really hurts.
- 46:33Speaker 2: Exactly. There's nothing more painful than losing in baseball, especially
- 46:37Speaker 2: with a slow ninth inning. The Phillies are going to
- 46:40Speaker 2: lead in game three and blow it, because that's what
- 46:43Speaker 2: they always do. I'm calling it right now, and Paul,
- 46:46Speaker 2: you do say, not so fast, we don't call anything
- 46:49Speaker 2: over until it's over. This is over. It's over.
- 46:52Speaker 3: Not tonight, but it's over bigger.
- 46:53Speaker 2: Yes, exactly.
- 46:54Speaker 3: So constructive criticism time. What we're doing, what you think,
- 46:57Speaker 3: send it in on Twitter. We'll get to it. We'll
- 46:59Speaker 3: put you up on the big board.
- 47:00Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 47:00Speaker 3: First one, Pearl. What's the over-under on how many games
- 47:05Speaker 3: LeBron and Embiid play together this season? Well, you have
- 47:07Speaker 3: to start with Embiid.
- 47:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, this is an under. Give me any number.
- 47:11Speaker 3: I'll go 49 and a half.
- 47:14Speaker 2: 49 and a half?
- 47:15Speaker 3: I think the goal is to get Embiid every other start.
- 47:17Speaker 3: So you're looking maybe 44 and a half, 43 and
- 47:19Speaker 3: a half.
- 47:20Speaker 2: But what about LeBron's March groin injury? Every February, March,
- 47:24Speaker 2: he has a groin injury. Is that scheduled already? Yeah,
- 47:26Speaker 2: it's scheduled. He's going to be in Barbados. LeBron always
- 47:28Speaker 2: takes an injury vacation toward the end of the season.
- 47:31Speaker 2: No way do they play 49.5. I'd say an accurate
- 47:34Speaker 2: number is 32.
- 47:35Speaker 3: All right, next one, constructive criticism. Let's go to it.
- 47:38Speaker 3: Here we go. Just maybe J.J. McCarthy is the next
- 47:41Speaker 3: Sam Darnold. Wouldn't that be a great story? Yeah, it'd
- 47:44Speaker 3: be a great story. Are you betting on that, David D.?
- 47:47Speaker 3: I don't know. It feels like we're a long way
- 47:49Speaker 3: from there. And remember, Darnold had a few stops.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I don't think J.J. McCarthy is as good
- 47:53Speaker 2: as Sam Darnold. Sam Darnold was a New York Jet
- 47:55Speaker 2: and actually played okay. So I'd say that's way, way
- 47:59Speaker 2: out of the question.
- 47:59Speaker 3: Time for the feel-good. Put you in a good mood
- 48:01Speaker 3: before we wrap up here and watch some baseball. Keep
- 48:03Speaker 3: your head up, Pearl. This is Patrick Mahomes. You know him.
- 48:06Speaker 3: He plays football. That's with his son. It's T-ball time.
- 48:10Speaker 3: His son's name, I'm checking my notes here, is Bronze.
- 48:14Speaker 5: Huh.
- 48:15Speaker 3: And he has another son named Golden.
- 48:17Speaker 2: Oh, that's not fair.
- 48:18Speaker 3: That's like naming your son third place Mahomes. Why would
- 48:20Speaker 3: you name your son Brown?
- 48:21Speaker 2: I have no idea. I don't get it.
- 48:23Speaker 3: Is it a nickname?
- 48:24Speaker 2: I think one of them might be a nickname because
- 48:26Speaker 2: he does have a kid named Patrick Mahomes.
- 48:27Speaker 3: Because I like Browns Mahomes. That sounds like a quarterback.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:30Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 48:31Speaker 2: By the way, that kid is probably a future MLB
- 48:34Speaker 2: starting pitcher. Patrick Mahomes, of course, is from a baseball family,
- 48:38Speaker 2: played baseball himself.
- 48:39Speaker 3: I think it's going to work out well for that youngster.
- 48:40Speaker 3: I don't know how, but it's going to.
- 48:41Speaker 2: But he's still named Browns.
- 48:43Speaker 3: Coming up tomorrow, J.J. Watt on the Dan Patrick Show.
- 48:45Speaker 3: Then come hang with us on Not So Fast right after.
- 48:48Speaker 3: That's it. Enjoy the baseball.
