- 0:24Now let's open our Bibles and study God's Word.
- 0:30Amen. Hebrews chapter 2 Looking at
- 0:33verses one through 4, the title of this message is Are you
- 0:38drifting? Are you drifting Then?
- 0:44We have all heard this phrase before, when we were either
- 0:47drifting to sleep during a movie or when we were distracted while
- 0:53driving and drifted into the other lane.
- 0:57However, we can even drift in our marriages when we have
- 1:01allowed other things and other people to take our attention
- 1:05away. But what do we do when we have
- 1:08drifted away from God? When we have allowed other
- 1:13things or other people to rob us of our attention and our
- 1:17affection for the Lord, the next question is, are there any
- 1:21warning signs that we have drifted or we are drifting?
- 1:26And I believe that's what this message is all about.
- 1:30Look what it says there in verse one.
- 1:32Therefore, we must give the more earnest heed to the things we've
- 1:36heard lest we drift away. I want to draw your attention to
- 1:42the word therefore, in verse one.
- 1:44The word, therefore, is a transitional conjunction that
- 1:47takes us back to what was just said.
- 1:49And so it takes us back to chapter 1, how Jesus Christ is
- 1:54superior over anything that the Jewish people who were going
- 1:59through persecution can go back to see.
- 2:02They had left Judaism and they have become Christian, so now
- 2:06they're being persecuted for their faith.
- 2:08And so many of them were contemplated waiting on going
- 2:12back to Judaism. So the author of Hebrews, I
- 2:15believe is Paul, that the author of Hebrews goes through this
- 2:19book and shows them how Jesus Christ is superior to anything
- 2:25you can go back to in Judaism. Or can I just pause here?
- 2:30Can I pause here? There's some of you that's
- 2:34contemplating on going back to the world, going back to the old
- 2:38watering hose, the old Hangouts, and I'm here to tell you that
- 2:42Jesus Christ is superior over anything you can go back to in
- 2:46this world. You cried out to the Lord to
- 2:49save you from this world. Now you contemplating on going
- 2:51back. I'm here to tell you Jesus is
- 2:54superior over anything you can go back to.
- 2:57I didn't say this and any other service, but this one, there's
- 2:59somebody need to hear that because you're thinking about
- 3:02going back, maybe persecuted for for your faith.
- 3:06Maybe God let you down in your mind, He let you down.
- 3:11You're praying for someone who was sick and they passed away
- 3:14and you had God. You let me down, man.
- 3:16I'm out of here and I'm here to tell you #1 ultimate healing is
- 3:21being in the presence of the Lord.
- 3:22You know that and #2 is that Jesus is superior over anything
- 3:27you can go back to now. Meanwhile, back at the ranch,
- 3:32the word therefore, it's there for a reason.
- 3:37Pastor Chuck used to tell us that therefore or because of all
- 3:41the things that's mentioned in chapter 1, how Jesus is superior
- 3:45over the angels. He mentioned that in chapters
- 3:49one and two, because you know, they believe the Jews believe
- 3:53that Moses received the 10 commandments by the hand of
- 3:57angels. Paul hints to that in in chapter
- 4:023 verse 19 of the book of Galatians.
- 4:06And so then he said look, Jesus is superior over Moses.
- 4:12Moses that was huge in chapters 3 and four in chapters 5 through
- 4:177 said Jesus is superior over the high priest.
- 4:20As you go back and try to go back to the old sacrifices and
- 4:24all that, Jesus is superior over all those things and just
- 4:27continues on throughout this book.
- 4:30So therefore, or because of all this, we must give the more
- 4:34earnest heed to the things we have heard.
- 4:38I'm going to draw your attention to the phrase earnest heed.
- 4:41The Greek word is persecho, and it means to beware or to anchor
- 4:47a ship or a boat. Then he tells us why this is
- 4:51important. Notice, he says, lest we drift
- 4:53away. The Greek word for drift is
- 4:57paaretto, and it is also a nautical term that describes a
- 5:02ship drifting past the safety of the harbor.
- 5:07So the author and I believe is Paul is warning us to carefully
- 5:12anchor ourselves to the things we have heard.
- 5:16Why? Lest at any time we find
- 5:19ourselves drifting. Drifting carries the connotation
- 5:24of letting go and putting it in neutral and allowing the
- 5:28currents of this world to take you either out to sea or into
- 5:34the rocks, crashing in your walk with Christ, crashing your
- 5:39marriage, or crashing emotionally or spiritually.
- 5:43Or Paul used this terminology again in First Timothy 119 when
- 5:48he said that some believers have rejected the truth and suffered.
- 5:53Here it is suffered shipwreck. This can happen to any of us.
- 5:59Now I know you may think, well, you know, I've been walking with
- 6:03the Lord for some years. This can never happen to me.
- 6:06Oh, notice how Paul said, lest we drift.
- 6:14Oh, the plural pronoun that Paul uses means that he is even
- 6:19including himself unless we drift.
- 6:24So the question is, have you drifted or are you drifting?
- 6:31Have you drifted in your Christian walk?
- 6:35Have you drifted in your marriage?
- 6:37Here are four warning signs that you either have drifted or are
- 6:45drifting. Number one for you note takers,
- 6:48you're no longer growing or making progress in your
- 6:52Christian walk. You're no longer growing and
- 6:55making progress in your Christian walk down.
- 6:58Here's the thing, prior to the men understood this when I
- 7:01mentioned it yesterday and some of you would get it today.
- 7:04Prior to Thanos snapping his finger back in 2020, we used to
- 7:10judge a person's spirituality by their church attendance.
- 7:15And, you know, it used to be you.
- 7:17You miss a couple of weeks. We like, bro, bro, you good?
- 7:20You all right, man? What, what?
- 7:21What's going on? We ain't seen you in a couple of
- 7:23weeks since that time. We we no longer do that.
- 7:28But here's the thing. That shouldn't have been the
- 7:32test anyway. The gauge.
- 7:35Anyway. The real gauge is based upon
- 7:38Galatians 522 and 23, the fruit of the Spirit.
- 7:42The fruit of Spirit is Lovejoy, peace, long-suffering, goodness,
- 7:45faithfulness, gentleness, kindness and self-control.
- 7:49That's how you gauge where you are in your walk with the Lord.
- 7:53Are you more loving towards your wife this month than you were
- 7:57last month? Are you kinder this year than
- 8:00you were last year? Are you exercising more
- 8:03self-control this week than you did last week?
- 8:08See. Are you more patient towards
- 8:10your wife and your children today than you were yesterday?
- 8:18That's how you gauge your walk with the Lord, whether you are
- 8:21growing or not, or you are a grump.
- 8:24Before you were a Christian and now that you call yourself a
- 8:27Christian, you still a grump. That shouldn't be.
- 8:31There should be a way to gauge it and the fruit of the Spirit
- 8:35is the way to gauge it. Are you exercising more
- 8:39self-control? Are you still overeating and
- 8:41over indulging and over whatever?
- 8:46And you, you call yourself a Christian, that's how you gauge
- 8:49things. So when you are drifting or have
- 8:52drifted, you're no longer growing in your walk with the
- 8:59Lord. That's number one.
- 9:01Number 20. Here we go, folks.
- 9:04Here we go. Old ways are reintroduced back
- 9:11into your life again. There was a condition you were
- 9:15in when you cried out for God to save you.
- 9:18Maybe you were in some drunken stupor.
- 9:20Maybe you were high on some drug.
- 9:22Maybe you were doing all kind of crazy stuff and you cried out to
- 9:25God. God save me out of this
- 9:27condition. Save me from me and God saved
- 9:32you, rescued you out of the miry clay, set your feet upon a rock
- 9:38and saved you. But when you are drifting or
- 9:44have drifted, always are reintroduced back into your life
- 9:52again. For example, drinking alcohol,
- 9:58abusing prescription drugs or recreational drugs.
- 10:03Now someone may protest and say well I don't see anything wrong
- 10:06with these things. I have lived in Christ There
- 10:10Pastor Tony First Corinthians 612 says all things are lawful
- 10:14and I believe them. Well yes, but that verse goes on
- 10:19to say, but all things are not helpful, which means help you in
- 10:25your walk with Christ or help us to become more Christ like.
- 10:30And then it continues, all things are lawful for me to do,
- 10:33but I would not be brought under the power of any or anything.
- 10:38Then Paul doubled down on what he said in chapter 10 of First
- 10:42Corinthians. Verse 23 says all things are
- 10:45lawful, but all things do not edify or build me up in my walk
- 10:51with Christ. So yes, you can do whatever it
- 10:54is you want to do. All things are lawful, but you
- 10:59must ask yourself three questions based upon these two
- 11:02verses #1 whatever it is you want to do, will it help you
- 11:07become more like Jesus Christ? 1st Corinthians 1031 said, let
- 11:13everything that you do be done to the glory of God.
- 11:15So can you tip up that alcoholic beverages, Oh God, I just give
- 11:20you glory for this as I'm smoking this God.
- 11:23Oh, to God be the glory. Great things he has done as I'm
- 11:28shooting up. Oh Lord, just give you glory,
- 11:33Give you glory #2 whatever it is you want to do.
- 11:39Will it bring you under its power?
- 11:43Will alcohol or abusing prescription or recreational
- 11:46drugs or porn bring you under its power #3 whatever it is you
- 11:54want to do? Will it edify or build me up in
- 11:58my Christian walk? You got to ask yourself this, Oh
- 12:03God, as I'm living with my girlfriend and every time we're
- 12:12sleeping together, oh God, I just I give you glory, I give
- 12:16you praise. You know, nowadays, nowadays,
- 12:19you know, you see, I'm old enough to remember when things
- 12:22are a little bit different. But nowadays, you know, when you
- 12:26introduce somebody as your fiance, that just means y'all
- 12:30living together. That's the definition.
- 12:32It is today. Back in the day, I'm old enough
- 12:35to remember that back in the day when you said my fiance, it's
- 12:39like, oh, they're about to get married.
- 12:41Oh, when, when is the wedding? Oh, is this a couple months from
- 12:44now? But today fiance, this means
- 12:50y'all living together. That's all playing house.
- 12:54That's all y'all doing ladies, don't let them do you like that
- 13:00you you you're not a used car that he need to test drive you
- 13:03before y'all get married. Somebody need to hear that
- 13:06somebody need to. I didn't say that.
- 13:08None of these services, ladies, it's an old saying.
- 13:15It's so old. It's so old.
- 13:17It's an old saying. Why buy the cow when you get in
- 13:20the milk for free? Ladies, let me tell you
- 13:23something. He'll never marry you as long as
- 13:25he getting the milk for free. Oh, somebody needs to hear that.
- 13:29Today. I go back to Virginia.
- 13:33Tomorrow you don't have to worry about it.
- 13:35I go back to Virginia. Pastor Ed have to mop up, you
- 13:38know, do the mop up. I'm telling you, when you're
- 13:45drifting, old things are reintroduced back in your life
- 13:52again. And just as you have to ask
- 13:56yourself these questions and whatever it is I want to do,
- 14:00will it help me become more like Jesus Christ #2 whatever it is I
- 14:05want to do, will it bring me on this power?
- 14:07Does alcohol, does drugs? Does porn?
- 14:10Does whatever it is you want to do, does it have the potential
- 14:14of bringing me under its power? And #3 whatever it is I want to
- 14:21do, would it edify? Will it build me up in my walk
- 14:25of Christ? And if we will be honest with
- 14:29ourselves, we will say no. None of these things would do
- 14:36that. If we be honest, we just say no.
- 14:38These things would bring me under this power.
- 14:41I can't glorify the Lord for that.
- 14:44It won't help me to become more like Christ.
- 14:47Then my, my question is, why are you entered reintroducing these
- 14:55things back into your life? If it'll bring you in this
- 14:59power, if it doesn't help you in your walk with the Lord, then
- 15:05why are you reintroducing those things back into your life?
- 15:09Remember, it was those things and it's grip upon you that you
- 15:16cried out to God to save you and he did.
- 15:21So why reintroduce them back into your life?
- 15:25Hey, guess what? There's a bonus one.
- 15:28There's a bonus one you have to ask yourself, will it stumble
- 15:32someone? Whatever it is you want to do,
- 15:35you have to ask yourself, will it stumble someone?
- 15:37Well, in First Corinthians 8-9, Paul warns us about allowing our
- 15:44liberty to become a stumbling block, meaning that if whatever
- 15:48it is we're doing, if we feel we got liberty to do whatever it
- 15:53is, if our liberty is stumbling someone, then it ceases from
- 15:59being a liberty and now it's a stumbling block.
- 16:03Watch this, many of you as adults, you acquired a taste of
- 16:16alcohol because growing up, your parents used to have parties and
- 16:24leave cups laying around. And you being a little nosy
- 16:27little kid, what's this? You look to the left, look to
- 16:30the right and take a sip. And that caused you to acquire a
- 16:36taste for alcohol. And now all of a sudden, you
- 16:39don't even realize that your own parents stumbled you.
- 16:43So now are you going to turn around and stumble?
- 16:45Your children come. Many people say, well, Pastor
- 16:47Tony, I exercise my liberties at home and the privacy of my own
- 16:52home. OK, but is it stumbling your
- 16:54wife? Is it stumbling your children?
- 16:57Does Little Johnny and little Sally got to push past the beer
- 17:01cans and the wine bottle in order to get the milk for their
- 17:04cereal? You got to ask yourself, because
- 17:07you better believe little Johnny and Sally, when you're not
- 17:10around, going to take a sip of that.
- 17:12Whatever it is that's in there, they're going to take a sip of
- 17:15that. I grew up in the Midwest where
- 17:17everyone had basements and they had bars in the basement.
- 17:22I never did. I never did smoke, drink or do
- 17:25drugs. Even before I was a Christian, I
- 17:27was an athlete and pretty good athlete, and therefore I didn't
- 17:30want anything to hinder me from being the best I could be.
- 17:33So I don't know what it is to be drunk.
- 17:36I don't know what it is to be high.
- 17:38I don't know any of that type of stuff.
- 17:40I didn't do drugs, didn't even fool that.
- 17:43That stuff was not even attractive to me.
- 17:47But you know, there's one thing I I never voiced this.
- 17:49I speak around the world and I never said this before.
- 17:53I remember a time because my dad drank.
- 17:57I remember a time I was with my dad.
- 18:00He went to this one watering hole that all his boys from the
- 18:05steel mill used to go to and I never forget, you know, and then
- 18:10afterwards went to one of his friend's house and they all
- 18:13drinking beer. And I remember my dad said, hey,
- 18:16you want to take a sip? And I took a sip.
- 18:19And I was like, that could have been the start of me becoming an
- 18:26alcoholic, but I thought it was sick.
- 18:31Just like I think coffee is sick.
- 18:35That taste of coffee is rubbish. I'm just saying now that many
- 18:39y'all love it and Starbucks is the king of the world.
- 18:43But that taste of beer I just I said yuck that is bad.
- 18:53So you got to ask yourself, will it stumble someone?
- 18:56I remember prior to the the reset of five years ago, I used
- 19:03to go to Walmart and Sam's Club 3 or 4 * a week.
- 19:06I used to have three or four counseling appointments every
- 19:09time I went in there. And so I remember, you know, I,
- 19:13I went down 1 aisle and there was a lady who recognized me and
- 19:18she had a cart full of wine bottles.
- 19:21It was about good 7-8 of those things in there.
- 19:24And she told me her eyes got big like a deer caught in the
- 19:26headlight. And she hurried up and went
- 19:29around, you know, the bottles in there clanging against these
- 19:32duck clang clanging. I said, hey, you do you.
- 19:37I didn't say anything to her. It just it just my presence just
- 19:41kind of got all weirded out and I just will it stumble somewhat.
- 19:50I did mention this yesterday. I didn't mention it today to
- 19:54give you take it a step further, give you an example.
- 19:58I think y'all, y'all call y'alls liquor stores, ABC stores here
- 20:02is that ABC stores or just liquor stores, liquor store?
- 20:06They be both y'all come both. So after church, you see me
- 20:14coming out of the ABC, the liquor store.
- 20:17Brown paper bag loan handle and you will.
- 20:21Look, Pastor Tony, what you doing?
- 20:27Oh, no. You know, I'm at liberty.
- 20:29You know, I'm, I'm out of church now.
- 20:31You know I'm out of church. Give me a little little wine to
- 20:37kind of calm down. You know, I have to deal with
- 20:38all them people there. I need to calm down a little
- 20:42bit. That's what a lady told me.
- 20:46The lady told me. She said, you know, Pastor Tony,
- 20:48you know, I just have a little wine at the end of the day.
- 20:51You want to kind of calm down a little bit.
- 20:54And I said, oh, really? She said, yeah.
- 20:56I said, so you need to calm down every day then, right?
- 21:00I said, so that means you're drinking every day.
- 21:04I didn't look at it like that, Pastor Tony.
- 21:06Well, you should. You're drinking every day.
- 21:10You don't even realize it. So if you saw me coming out of
- 21:15the liquor store with a, you know, pack of Newports and I'm
- 21:22I'm light. I got one light and got one wine
- 21:26bottle in my hand, you'd be like, Pastor Tony, do you need
- 21:30to go back and listen to your sermon?
- 21:34You'll be stumbled. And I said before, when your
- 21:40liberty, it becomes a stumbling block, it ceases from being a
- 21:46liberty, and now it's a stumbling block.
- 21:51See, the unbelieving world doesn't understand your
- 21:55liberties in Christ. The unbeliever has a certain
- 22:00image of what a Christian is, the unbelievers.
- 22:07So when they see you doing a certain thing, the way that they
- 22:14will tell you that they're stumbled by your behavior, watch
- 22:18this. This is what they will say.
- 22:21I thought you were a Christian. That's them saying whatever it
- 22:27is you're doing in their mind. That's not what Christians do.
- 22:32That's their way of saying I'm stumbled.
- 22:33They don't know that phraseology, but that's their
- 22:37way of saying that they're stumbled.
- 22:40So number one, the first sign that you're drifting, no longer
- 22:46making progress as a Christian #2 old ways are reintroduced
- 22:52back into your life #3 a loss of appetite for the Bible, a loss
- 22:59of appetite for church and for spiritual things.
- 23:05You can just take one look at me and tell them my wife is an
- 23:08incredible cook. And so let's say she hits me up
- 23:15and say, hey, guess what? I'm going to make your favorite
- 23:18meal, so hurry up and get home, OK?
- 23:21And I'm going to use this example because we're not as
- 23:23fortunate as you guys. We don't have an In-n-out
- 23:26Burger. So I'm going to use this example
- 23:29for y'all. Let's say I drive home and I
- 23:32stop in and out and give me a double, double animal style.
- 23:39My friend up in Fort Collins said you got to get these
- 23:41Peppers on there and some grilled onions and stuff.
- 23:43I said OK, OK, let's say I plow that down, you know, fries and
- 23:47stuff. You know that pink lemonade, you
- 23:49know you can't leave that out. Got to go with that pink
- 23:51lemonade and I just chow down and belly feeling good.
- 23:56I pulled into the driveway. It doesn't matter what my wife
- 23:59cooked, I wouldn't want it. Why?
- 24:03I don't have an appetite for it. Why?
- 24:06Because I pigged out on, in and out before I came home.
- 24:10Many of you have a loss of an appetite for spiritual things
- 24:13because you've been pigging out on the fast foods of this world
- 24:17and you wonder why you have no appetite for the things of God.
- 24:21No appetite for church, no appetite for reading the Bible,
- 24:24for prayer, for all those things because you're too busy pigging
- 24:29out doing. You know, my generation, we use
- 24:31this finger doing this all day long.
- 24:36And you have no appetite for spiritual things.
- 24:42You look at your screen time, you give more time to your phone
- 24:45than you ever have given it to the things of God in a month's
- 24:48time. See, when you're drifting, you
- 24:54have no appetite for spiritual things.
- 24:58No longer heeding the Word of God like Hebrews 2, one said.
- 25:02No longer taking heed or anchoring yourself in the Word
- 25:06of God like before #4 no deep concern for the loss of those
- 25:12far from God. A sign that you're drifting or
- 25:15have drifted. You don't have a heart for lost
- 25:19people anymore. Jesus told us why He came.
- 25:24He says I came Luke 1910 for you note takers.
- 25:27He says I came to seek and to save the laws.
- 25:31And if you don't have a heart to see lost people saved, you don't
- 25:35have the heart of Jesus. You can't say I got the heart of
- 25:38Jesus. No, you don't if you don't have
- 25:40a heart for lost souls. And you will never have a heart
- 25:45for lost souls if you're looking down upon them, calling them
- 25:50names. Every time I get to Matthew 936,
- 25:56it says Jesus saw the multitude and he was moved with compassion
- 26:01towards them. He saw them as weary and
- 26:04bruised, like sheep without a shepherd.
- 26:06And then Matthew doubled down on it because in Matthew 1414, he
- 26:11says the same thing. Every time I get to those
- 26:13verses, I'm saying, oh God, give me your heart.
- 26:17Help me to see people through your eyes.
- 26:20Help me not to to look at them and call them names.
- 26:23Leftist, Marxist, liberal and all kind of stuff.
- 26:27Oh God, give me your heart. You will never win lost souls.
- 26:30If you look down upon the people God has called us to reach, you
- 26:35will never reach them, never at all.
- 26:40Because you see, you see them as, oh, look at them over there.
- 26:44Look at the law. Then you glued to CNN and Fox
- 26:48News and just nuts and them and those people, look at them and
- 26:52whoa, boy, those laws, they're passing.
- 26:55And now I tell you, you never reach them.
- 26:59There's a guy on staff. Matter of fact, he spoke for me.
- 27:03He used to be on staff and he works with Young Life now and he
- 27:08spoke for me today. And I tell you, he had to, he
- 27:12had to get me back on the right track because I looked at this
- 27:16generation and you know, for those who don't know, you know,
- 27:19I'm a Marine, former active duty Marine.
- 27:23Just so when you hear me say former Marine, don't don't say
- 27:25former Marine. Who wants to Marine always a
- 27:27man. I mean former active duty.
- 27:29So I have to add that in there. But I just see things
- 27:35differently. I'm all about being a man and
- 27:38for men being men. I'm all about that.
- 27:40I love speaking to men. I'm all about that life and now
- 27:46today to be a man and proud to be a man.
- 27:48That's called toxic masculinity. I said.
- 27:52Since when I said y'all won't be happy till you turn all the men
- 27:57into women? I said that ain't happening
- 28:00here. I told, I told the guys
- 28:02yesterday. One guy reminded me of it.
- 28:04I said I can put on pink and make it look blue.
- 28:11And one of the guys told me this morning and said I see you got
- 28:13your baby blue on. I said yeah, yeah, I do.
- 28:18There's my dude right there. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:22So, you know, the guy had to remind me because I looked down
- 28:29on this generation, be honest with you, the younger
- 28:31generation. I said you weak, you, you sorry,
- 28:34you don't want to do anything. You just sissies.
- 28:38And I just looked, I looked down upon him and he had to get me
- 28:41straight. He said you'll never reach him
- 28:44with that attitude. He said you'll never reach him
- 28:48if you look down upon. I said, bro, in my generation,
- 28:50bro, we were like this. We did this.
- 28:53We we stood, we were happy to be a man and he's there still a
- 28:58couple people happy to be a man. And he had to say, but you know
- 29:03what God has called you to reach this generation.
- 29:07My son had to tell me. He said, Dad, you talk about
- 29:11this generation. He said, but you're still alive.
- 29:14So you still a part of this generation.
- 29:16And I said, whoa, I said, you right.
- 29:20And I had to change my views on how I saw this generation.
- 29:24And I said, oh God, give me your heart form.
- 29:27Help me to see them through your eyes.
- 29:31And sure enough, the Lord began to change my heart because I'm
- 29:36from a different generation. My dad was a man's man and
- 29:40taught me how to be a man. You take care of your house, you
- 29:42take care of responsibility. You go out and you not only
- 29:46bring home the bacon, but you bring home the Bible, and you'd
- 29:49be the man that leads the way. That's how I was taught.
- 29:53But I see today, you know, Mama's boys and all that kind of
- 29:57stuff. That's because fatherlessness in
- 30:01the home. No fathers are around.
- 30:04Raised by Mama and Mama raised the boy to be the man she hates.
- 30:10And I see a lot of that going on.
- 30:12A lot of single parents, a lot of stuff go goes on in our
- 30:15community where we are. And I had to change.
- 30:19I had some younger people that had to tell me you would never
- 30:24reach them with that attitude. And I said, wow.
- 30:28So I had to change my heart and my viewpoint and I had to
- 30:32constantly pray, Lord, give me your eyes to see the multitudes
- 30:36the way you see them as weary and bruised, like sheep without
- 30:40a shepherd. And so I had to change.
- 30:43So a sign that you're drifting, you no longer have a heart for
- 30:49lost souls. Let me read verses 2 through
- 30:524:00 so we can then wrap it up. For if the words spoken through
- 30:56angels prove steadfast, and every transgression and
- 30:58disobedience received a just reward, how should we escape if
- 31:03we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be
- 31:07spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who
- 31:11heard him? God also hearing witness both
- 31:16with signs and wonders, with various miracles and gifts of
- 31:20the Holy Spirit according to his own will.
- 31:23Now Paul in verses 2 through 4 is warning them that those who
- 31:27neglected Moses law received the just punishment.
- 31:30He says how much greater punishment will be received, who
- 31:34neglected salvation brought about through Jesus Christ?
- 31:39See, it was believed, as I mentioned before, that they
- 31:42looked up to these angels and they revered angels and all that
- 31:46sort of stuff that brought the law to Moses.
- 31:49But then he said if they received the just punishment,
- 31:52who received the from the law of Moses or neglecting the law of
- 31:56Moses? He said how should we escape if
- 32:00we neglect so great a salvation? In other words, how should we
- 32:04escape punishment if we neglect so great a salvation?
- 32:09The point is, we won't escape. It's a rhetorical question.
- 32:13I love the description of salvation as being so great a
- 32:16salvation. The adverb soul means to such a
- 32:20great extent. It is used in John 316 For God
- 32:24so loved the world, meaning that God didn't just love the world,
- 32:28but he so loved the world, meaning that the word love falls
- 32:31short in how he feels about this world.
- 32:34So the adverb soul gives the word love more punch to it.
- 32:39So he not only loved the world, but he so loved the world to
- 32:42such a great extent. And the same thing is done here
- 32:48in these verses describing our salvation as so great a
- 32:52salvation that Greek word can be translated.
- 32:56So large a salvation, so vast a salvation.
- 33:00Why? Because it extends to everyone
- 33:03who put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ.
- 33:07The salvation that cost Jesus his life on the cross.
- 33:09The salvation that caused Jesus coming to this earth, put it on
- 33:14human flesh and dying. The salvation that caused Jesus
- 33:20to take the raft of the Father that was meant for all of us and
- 33:25he took it upon himself. I told you that because we're
- 33:28born sinners and nobody good, there's none good.
- 33:31No, not one. We're all born into sin, all of
- 33:35us. You know, little babies, you
- 33:38love you and their faith. They're little sinners.
- 33:44You don't give them milk and don't give them what they want.
- 33:46They going well and roll all over the floor and carry on.
- 33:51The Bible said that little babies, they come forth from the
- 33:54womb speaking lies. They're little sinners.
- 33:57I just got a brand new grandson. Grandma, you're only two months
- 34:00old. I had them the other day.
- 34:02I'll just look. I had him.
- 34:04He was looking at me. I'm looking at him.
- 34:06I said, you know you're a little Sinner.
- 34:11My son says he's up a couple times, you know, every two hours
- 34:15in the night. I said you're a little Sinner.
- 34:17I said you need Jesus, you need to accept Jesus in your I got to
- 34:21start out young here, little sinners.
- 34:26I love them, but they're sinners.
- 34:32So how should we escape if we neglect so great of salvation?
- 34:40And so The thing is that it's like I said, it's a rhetorical
- 34:44question to me that we won't escape.
- 34:46However many of us have neglected our salvation.
- 34:52I want to draw your attention to the word neglect.
- 34:54The Greek word is amaleo. It means to be careless of.
- 34:58It comes from the definite article A, which means not and
- 35:04mellow, which means have concern.
- 35:06So putting it together, it means to not have concern for or
- 35:11viewing something as being without significant.
- 35:14Pay no attention. How can we do our so great a
- 35:18salvation like this easy. We have allowed church hurt,
- 35:24broken relationships, drifting old habits, and the list goes on
- 35:30and on. I believe that the unfortunate
- 35:33circumstances in our lives has caused us to neglect our
- 35:37salvation, viewing it as something without significance.
- 35:42I've heard, you know, since the Great Reset, I've heard that now
- 35:46the average Christian attends church once every six weeks.
- 35:54I said Christians, not churchgoers, Christians once
- 36:00every six weeks. And I was just like, these are
- 36:05people who used to be every Sunday.
- 36:08Now, as it says on social media, Sunday fun day, that's what it
- 36:14becomes. I never forget the saying that
- 36:17was on the movie Concussion, that the NFL took a day they
- 36:21used to belong to the church. People bow down at the altar of
- 36:27the NFL, took a day that once belonged to the church.
- 36:31When I heard that, that just blew me away.
- 36:34Blew me away people. You know what's funny?
- 36:37You know what's funny? The Lord brings these things.
- 36:40Met a guy first service, he said It's so funny you say that he
- 36:46said. Because today here I am at
- 36:49church and this is my 6th week since I've been in church.
- 36:57The average Christian attends once every six weeks and don't
- 37:02care. It doesn't bother them.
- 37:05No conviction. Sunday, fun day.
- 37:09The Lord understands. I'm just tired, you know.
- 37:15Oh, I'm not feeling good today. Why were you at church?
- 37:17I wasn't feeling good today. The next day, Monday, they had
- 37:20work. I said I thought you weren't
- 37:22feeling good. Why isn't?
- 37:23Why isn't you only feeling bad when it's church time?
- 37:27But when it comes to work, you know that coffee when I just
- 37:31took a couple of things, I'm good looking at Nyquil and well,
- 37:35why couldn't you take that Nyquil Saturday night to Sunday
- 37:37morning and get to church? But the Lord understands and I
- 37:45just said what, what in the world has happened to us?
- 37:50What has happened to us? What has happened to us?
- 37:54We fear the IRS more than we fear God.
- 37:57Get an IRS letter in the mail. Oh my goodness.
- 38:04Let some bill come do, or some vacation you want to go on, some
- 38:08birthday party you want to do, some Christmas gifts you want to
- 38:12buy, and the first pot you take from is the Lord's money.
- 38:17Why do we do that? What?
- 38:18Because there's No Fear of God before our eyes, that's why.
- 38:22That's why it's the first thing we take from what the Lord
- 38:27understands. Well, how about the Lord
- 38:31understanding when you out there wrecking creation, recreation,
- 38:34wrecking creation, and all the money you spend for that and the
- 38:38vacation, then the cruises and all that kind of stuff.
- 38:41Nothing wrong with those things, but why does that always take a
- 38:45priority over God? I don't understand.
- 38:48My wife already told me I'm over my time, so let me just go right
- 38:52to this. You know, we got this thing.
- 38:54She lets me know, you know, and then she holds up 4 minutes.
- 39:01I'm sorry. Please apologize to the
- 39:03children's ministry that I went over.
- 39:05I was at 39 minutes. I have 40.
- 39:08I was at 39 minutes and about 43 seconds first service and I just
- 39:12blew it out this service. So let me just say this.
- 39:17Maybe you hear and you said Pastor Tony, I have drifted or I
- 39:20am drifting. What can I do?
- 39:23Jesus gave us the remedy in Revelation 2/5 when He was
- 39:27talking to the Church of Ephesus when they left their first love.
- 39:32He says remember therefore where you have fallen, repent and do
- 39:35your first works. And in this verse we have 3 Rs
- 39:39Remember, repent and return. Remember how it used to be when
- 39:43you were on fire for God #2 Repent.
- 39:47It means to have a change of mind and heart.
- 39:50In other words, change the way you think and feel about your
- 39:53drifting condition. Not trying to justify your
- 39:58condition. What reason I don't go to
- 40:00church? Because, you know, people I was
- 40:02serving and those people didn't appreciate me.
- 40:04They never said thank you. And you know, it's just always,
- 40:07you know, they'd always looked over me.
- 40:08So I'm just not going to that church.
- 40:12What were you doing it for anyway?
- 40:15It's supposed to be in the audience want now it's it's
- 40:17nothing wrong with getting the attaboy.
- 40:19Thank you. Appreciate you.
- 40:20Here's a gift. Nothing wrong with that.
- 40:23But who are you doing it for? Not trying to justify your
- 40:27drifting condition or blame other people playing the blame
- 40:30game like Adam did. The blame game is as old as
- 40:33time. Adam, what have you done?
- 40:36It was the woman you gave me since the beginning of time.
- 40:42And he kind of threw God under the bus too.
- 40:45It was the woman you gave me. So it's your fault too, haven't
- 40:49you? Not giving me this woman.
- 40:50I wouldn't be in this condition I'm in now.
- 40:52Men still blaming their wives today.
- 40:56Oh, that's OK. Y'all quiet.
- 40:58It's OK. It's still true.
- 41:00It's still true. And #3 return.
- 41:03Return to doing those things you were doing when you were on fire
- 41:07for God. Were you getting up early and
- 41:09reading? Start back.
- 41:10Getting up early. Were you praying on your
- 41:12lunchtime? Start back praying.
- 41:14Were you talking to people about Jesus?
- 41:16Start talking to people about Jesus.
- 41:18Let me conclude with this in this message.
- 41:21Are you drifting? Be honest with your evaluation
- 41:24of yourself and ask, Am I drifting?
- 41:28Have I lost my spiritual passion?
- 41:31Have I allowed old ways to come back into my life?
- 41:35Do I have no appetite for the Bible or spiritual things?
- 41:38And once you are honest with your evaluation of yourself,
- 41:43then cry out to God by remembering, repenting, and
- 41:48returning. Or you can leave here and go
- 41:52back to what you were doing, drifting past the safety of the
- 41:57harbor and just know that you're going to crash into the rocks
- 42:02and suffer shipwreck. But let me just say, Jesus
- 42:06Christ loves you and he wants you not only safe, but safe in
- 42:13his arms. And as the worship team makes
- 42:18their way on back out, there's going to be some people, pastors
- 42:23and leaders, going to be upfront and they're going to be ready to
- 42:28pray for you. Don't leave here the same
- 42:32condition that you came. That'd be the worst thing in the
- 42:35world. You came here to meet with God.
- 42:37You came here to hear from God. Don't leave here in the same
- 42:41condition that you came. Come and do some business with
- 42:44the Lord. This is why you can't you come
- 42:47to church to have a dialogue with the Lord.
- 42:51We start the conversation by speaking to him through worship
- 42:55and then he speaks to us through the word.
- 42:57We live leave here having a conversation.
- 42:59Now we respond to the word he's spoken to us.
- 43:03That's what church is all about. Then we have midweek service so
- 43:07we can get tuned back up because you know, we didn't we didn't
- 43:10drifted. I won't even say Monday and
- 43:13Tuesday, Sunday afternoon, Monday and Tuesday we drifted.
- 43:16So Wednesday we need to get filled back up and get them back
- 43:19out there for His glory and for His Kingdom.
- 43:22So let's pray now so we can now respond to the word that was
- 43:28given to us. Lord, thank you so much for this
- 43:31time. Here are your precious, precious
- 43:33people. Lord, you spoke into all of our
- 43:35hearts. And Lord, we need you.
- 43:38Many of us, we have drifted or are drifting.
- 43:42Bring us back to the safety of the harbor.
- 43:44Bring us back safe in your arms, Lord, draw your people to you
- 43:48today in Jesus name, Amen. We pray that you've been
- 43:54encouraged by this Bible study delivered live from the
- 43:56sanctuary of Calvary Church for prayer.
