SPEAKER_00: Conventional wisdom says if you don't want your data to be used, opt out of everything.
• 0:05
SPEAKER_00: We say if your data is being collected anyway, it's more rational to influence how it's used.
• 0:11
SPEAKER_00: The reality is that your data is already in the hands of many.
• 0:16
SPEAKER_00: Your posts, photos, messages, and interactions are stored regardless of your choice.
• 0:22
SPEAKER_00: Platform features, advertising, and analytics are carried out regardless of your choice.
• 0:28
SPEAKER_00: Opting out of AI training does not mean opting out of data collection.
• 0:33
SPEAKER_00: The real question is, it's not, should companies have my data?
• 0:36
  SPEAKER_00: They already do.
• 0:38
SPEAKER_00: The real question is, should my data help build better AI for everyone?
• 0:43
SPEAKER_00: Let's debunk the digital illusions.
• 0:45
SPEAKER_00: The myth of goodbye meta AI posts before building a serious argument, it is essential to debunk a dangerous illusion circulating on social media.
• 0:56
SPEAKER_00: The viral goodbye meta AI posts that promise to protect your data simply by sharing a message.
• 1:02
SPEAKER_00: The uncomfortable truth, these posts are completely fake and can make you more vulnerable.
• 1:08
SPEAKER_00: As Meta itself explains, sharing the goodbye Meta AI message is not a valid form of opposition.
• 1:15
SPEAKER_00: These posts have no legal effect on the terms of service, can mark you as an easy target for hackers and scammers.
• 1:23
SPEAKER_00: Basically, if you post them, you're a sucker.
• 1:26
SPEAKER_00: Provide a false sense of security that distracts from real action.
• 1:31
SPEAKER_00: Are the digital equivalent of chain letters, the problem with magic solutions, the viral success of these posts reveals a deeper problem.
• 1:39
SPEAKER_00: We prefer simple, illusory solutions to complex informed decisions.
• 1:44
SPEAKER_00: Sharing a post makes us feel active without requiring the effort of really understanding how our digital rights work.
• 1:50
SPEAKER_00: But privacy cannot be defended with memes.
• 1:53
SPEAKER_00: It is defended with knowledge and conscious action.
• 1:56
SPEAKER_00: How the law really works.
• 1:58
SPEAKER_00: The reality of the GDPR.
• 2:01
SPEAKER_00: Consent versus legitimate interest as of May 31, 2025.
• 2:05
SPEAKER_00: Meta has implemented a new regime for AI training using legitimate interest as the legal basis instead of consent.
• 2:13
SPEAKER_00: This is not a loophole but a legal tool provided for by the GDPR.
• 2:17
SPEAKER_00: Legitimate interest allows companies to process data without explicit consent if they can demonstrate that their interest does not outweigh the user's rights.
• 2:26
SPEAKER_00: This creates a gray area where companies tailor the law through internal assessments.
• 2:32
  SPEAKER_00: Geography of rights.
• 2:34
SPEAKER_00: In Europe, including Italy, the privacy guarantor has imposed simplified opposition mechanisms, opt-out.
• 2:42
SPEAKER_00: You have the right to object, but you must take active steps using official forms.
• 2:47
SPEAKER_00: The objection only applies to future data, not to data already integrated into models.
• 2:53
SPEAKER_00: In the United States and other countries, users have not been notified and have no opt-out mechanisms.
• 2:59
SPEAKER_00: The only protection is to make your accounts private.
• 3:03
SPEAKER_00: The real technical risks, the use of non-anonymized data carries high risks of model reversal, memorization leaks, and extraction vulnerabilities.
• 3:12
SPEAKER_00: The computational power required means that only actors with very high capacity can effectively exploit this data, creating systemic asymmetries between citizens and large corporations.
• 3:23
SPEAKER_00: Why your informed participation matters?
• 3:26
SPEAKER_00: Now that we have clarified the legal and technical reality, let's build a case for strategic participation.
• 3:33
  SPEAKER_00: Quality control.
• 3:34
SPEAKER_00: When informed people opt out, AI trains on those who remain.
• 3:38
SPEAKER_00: Do you want AI systems to be based primarily on data from people who don't read the terms of service, don't think critically about technology, don't represent your values or point of view?
• 3:50
  SPEAKER_00: Fighting bias.
• 3:52
SPEAKER_00: Bias in AI occurs when training data is not representative.
• 3:56
SPEAKER_00: Your participation helps ensure diverse perspectives in AI reasoning, better outcomes for underrepresented groups, a more nuanced understanding of complex issues, network effects, AI systems improve with scale and diversity, better understanding of language across dialects and cultures, more accurate responses for niche topics and communities, improved accessibility features for people with disabilities, reciprocity.
• 4:23
SPEAKER_00: If you use AI-powered features, search, translation, recommendations, accessibility tools, your participation helps improve them for everyone, including future users who need them most.
• 4:35
  SPEAKER_00: Responding to informed concerns.
• 4:38
SPEAKER_00: But what about my privacy?
• 4:40
SPEAKER_00: Your privacy does not change significantly between opting in and opting out of AI.
• 4:45
SPEAKER_00: The same data already powers.
• 4:48
SPEAKER_00: Content recommendations, advertising targeting platform analytics, content moderation.
• 4:55
SPEAKER_00: The difference is whether this data also helps improve AI for everyone or only, serves the immediate commercial interests of the platform.
• 5:03
SPEAKER_00: What if AI is used for harmful purposes?
• 5:06
SPEAKER_00: This is exactly why responsible people like you should participate.
• 5:10
SPEAKER_00: Opting out does not stop AI development, it simply removes your voice from it.
• 5:15
SPEAKER_00: AI systems will be developed anyway.
• 5:18
SPEAKER_00: The question is, with or without the input of people who think critically about these issues.
• 5:24
  SPEAKER_00: I don't trust big tech, understandable.
• 5:27
  SPEAKER_00: But consider this.
• 5:29
SPEAKER_00: Would you rather AI systems be built with or without the input of people who share your skepticism toward large corporations?
• 5:36
SPEAKER_00: Your distrust is precisely why your critical participation is valuable.
• 5:41
SPEAKER_00: The democratic argument artificial intelligence is becoming a reality whether you participate or not.
• 5:47
SPEAKER_00: Your choice is not whether AI will be built, but whether the AI that is built will reflect the values and perspectives of people who think carefully about these issues.
• 5:57
SPEAKER_00: Opting out is like not voting.
• 5:59
SPEAKER_00: It doesn't stop the election, it just means that the outcome won't take your contribution into account.
• 6:04
SPEAKER_00: In a world where only actors with extremely high computational capacity can interpret and effectively exploit this data, your critical voice and training can have more impact than your absence.
• 6:15
SPEAKER_00: What to do in practice?
• 6:17
SPEAKER_00: Effective actions, stay and participate strategically if you want AI to work better for people like you.
• 6:24
SPEAKER_00: You care about reducing bias in AI systems.
• 6:27
SPEAKER_00: You use AI-powered features and want them to improve.
• 6:30
SPEAKER_00: You believe that critical participation is better than absence.
• 6:34
SPEAKER_00: And in the meantime, use official opt-out tools when available, not fake posts.
• 6:40
SPEAKER_00: Configure your privacy settings on platforms correctly.
• 6:44
SPEAKER_00: Learn about your rights under the GDPR if you are in Europe.
• 6:48
SPEAKER_00: Monitor and publicly criticize companies' practices.
• 6:52
SPEAKER_00: Consider opting out if you have specific concerns about the security of your data.
• 6:57
SPEAKER_00: You work in sensitive industries with confidentiality requirements.
• 7:01
SPEAKER_00: You prefer to minimize your digital footprint.
• 7:04
SPEAKER_00: You have religious or philosophical objections to the development of AI, but don't delude yourself with goodbye meta, AI posts, or similar digital chains, the belief that ignoring the problem will automatically protect you, magic solutions that promise protection without effort.
• 7:23
SPEAKER_00: Conclusion, choose with awareness, not with illusions.
• 7:29
SPEAKER_00: Your individual opt-out has minimal impact on your privacy, but staying has a real impact on everyone.
• 7:36
SPEAKER_00: In a world where AI systems will determine the flow of information, decisions, and interactions between people and technology.
• 7:44
SPEAKER_00: The question is not whether these systems should exist, but whether they should include the perspectives of thoughtful and critical people like you.
• 7:52
SPEAKER_00: Sometimes the most radical action is not to opt out.
• 7:56
SPEAKER_00: Often the most radical thing to do is to stay and make sure your voice is heard.
• 8:02
SPEAKER_00: Anonymous, the informed choice, this is not about blindly trusting companies or ignoring privacy concerns.
• 8:09
SPEAKER_00: It is about recognizing that privacy is not defended with memes, but with strategic and informed participation.
• 8:16
SPEAKER_00: In an ecosystem where power asymmetries are enormous, your critical voice in AI training can have more impact than your protesting absence.
• 8:25
SPEAKER_00: Whatever your choice, choose with awareness, not with digital illusions.
• 8:29
SPEAKER_00: A note on digital hermits.
• 8:32
SPEAKER_00: The illusion of total isolation, a paragraph of sympathy also for the privacy hermits, those pure souls who believe they can completely escape digital tracking by living offline like Tibetan monks in 2025.
• 8:46
  SPEAKER_00: Spoiler.
• 8:48
SPEAKER_00: Even if you go live in a remote cabin in the Dolomites, your data is already everywhere.
• 8:53
SPEAKER_00: Your primary care physician uses digital systems.
• 8:57
SPEAKER_00: The bank where you keep your savings to buy firewood tracks every transaction.
• 9:01
SPEAKER_00: The village supermarket has cameras and electronic payment systems.
• 9:06
SPEAKER_00: Even the postman who brings you your bills contributes to logistics, data sets that feed optimization algorithms.
• 9:12
SPEAKER_00: The reality of interconnection, total digital hermitage in 2025 essentially means excluding yourself from civil society.
• 9:19
SPEAKER_00: You can give up Instagram, but you cannot give up the healthcare, banking, education, or employment systems without dramatic consequences for your quality of life.
• 9:28
SPEAKER_00: And while you build your anti-5G hut, your data continues to exist in the databases of hospitals, banks, insurance companies, municipalities, and tax agencies, and is still used to train systems that will influence future generations.
• 9:42
  SPEAKER_00: The Hermit's Paradox.
• 9:44
SPEAKER_00: Your protest isolation does not prevent AI systems from being trained on the data of less aware people, but it excludes you from the possibility of influencing their development in more ethical directions.
• 9:55
SPEAKER_00: In essence, you have achieved the untainted moral purity of those who observe history from the sidelines, while others, less enlightened but more present, write the rules of the game.
• 10:06
