- 0:32Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Welcome back to another edition of the Mixed Company Podcast.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Of course, I'm one of our host Jamison Welsh, and
- 0:39Speaker 3: always I'm enjoined by the class all the classy.
- 0:42Speaker 2: What's going on?
- 0:43Speaker 4: Oh boy, Jamison, I am not happy today. We had
- 0:46Speaker 4: some news last week in between shows that has me
- 0:49Speaker 4: mortified at the state of professional boxing today. Just when
- 0:52Speaker 4: we're getting all hyped up for the Canelo Crawford match,
- 0:56Speaker 4: we have boxing's biggest joke swooping to embarrass the sport
- 0:59Speaker 4: yet again. And Tank Davis will be fighting Jake Paul
- 1:03Speaker 4: at an exhibition of course in November. Just a couple
- 1:06Speaker 4: episodes ago, we were talking about potentially what's next to
- 1:09Speaker 4: come for Tank, and I made it very clear that
- 1:12Speaker 4: if you fought Jake Paul, the man was dead to me.
- 1:15Speaker 4: So yeah, let's get into it. You know, I want
- 1:16Speaker 4: to get your thoughts on him signing up to this fight.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Tank fights at one thirty five Jake Paul's up to
- 1:22Speaker 4: two hundred pounds as a cruiserweight. You know, this to
- 1:25Speaker 4: me is absolutely ridiculous. Am I being dramatic? I'm exaggerating
- 1:29Speaker 4: what's going on here?
- 1:30Speaker 3: No, you're not dramatic. It's more upsetting than anything. I
- 1:34Speaker 3: don't But here's the thing. I don't blame Tank as
- 1:37Speaker 3: crazy as aniles. I blame boxing for not having its
- 1:40Speaker 3: own house in order. I mean, you don't have your
- 1:42Speaker 3: own home in order. This is what happens when you
- 1:45Speaker 3: don't maximize the certain values of fights and certain things.
- 1:50Speaker 2: This is what happens. You will allow this stuff to
- 1:53Speaker 2: take place.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Boxing has been its own worse enemy for the better
- 1:57Speaker 3: part of twenty five years.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Now.
- 2:01Speaker 3: That being said, Tank Davis has been recorded saying, Hey,
- 2:07Speaker 3: I'm in this for the money. I don't care about
- 2:09Speaker 3: the legacy. He said it himself, like, I'm more interested
- 2:12Speaker 3: in making money than being some great, powerful pound all
- 2:16Speaker 3: time guy, he staid out of his mouth.
- 2:18Speaker 2: So we gotta take that for what it is.
- 2:20Speaker 3: However, we also have to understand that if someone's gonna
- 2:24Speaker 3: guarantee you fifty plus million dollars or one hundred million dollars.
- 2:28Speaker 3: I understand what he's doing. I don't like it, I
- 2:30Speaker 3: don't agree with it, but as long as boxing is
- 2:34Speaker 3: tripping over its own feet, this is what's gonna continue
- 2:37Speaker 3: to happen. Because if he gets a huge payday win
- 2:40Speaker 3: loser draw for exhibition, whoever else is next to gonna
- 2:44Speaker 3: do the same thing.
- 2:44Speaker 2: For instance, win loser.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Draw with Canelo in a couple weeks, if he gets
- 2:50Speaker 3: an offer for one hundred and fifty million to fight
- 2:52Speaker 3: Jake Parr whomever else, I can't falter for taking that
- 2:56Speaker 3: because boxing doesn't have his shit together and we keep
- 2:59Speaker 3: on giving by the past. We love it, but it's
- 3:02Speaker 3: too much inconsistencies, it's too much bs behind the scenes.
- 3:06Speaker 2: And that has allowed this shit to happen. So it's
- 3:09Speaker 2: a lot of people's fault.
- 3:10Speaker 3: It's upsetting, but I'm not happy.
- 3:15Speaker 2: I'm not happy at all.
- 3:16Speaker 4: I can understand everything that you're saying, and yes, boxing
- 3:19Speaker 4: as a sport as a business does have its issues
- 3:22Speaker 4: that are at fault here, but these guys are making
- 3:26Speaker 4: their own decisions, and Tank Davis has been one of
- 3:28Speaker 4: the more consistent stars lately. So the man is not
- 3:30Speaker 4: hurting for opportunities for cash. Yes, I get it, but
- 3:35Speaker 4: we have to have some standards here. We can't just like,
- 3:38Speaker 4: you know, just try to make this, try to legitimize
- 3:43Speaker 4: something like this every time when somebody just wants to
- 3:45Speaker 4: make a few bucks. You know, this is the greatest
- 3:47Speaker 4: sport in the world, God damn it, and it should
- 3:49Speaker 4: be treated as such. And Tank's legacy should have some
- 3:53Speaker 4: he should have some respect for his legacy instead of
- 3:55Speaker 4: doing this, instead of legitimizing this guy.
- 3:57Speaker 2: That's what I have to say about it.
- 3:59Speaker 3: So I've I think when boxing was covered differently, I
- 4:03Speaker 3: would agree with you. However, sports in general, especially boxing,
- 4:07Speaker 3: we do not appreciate people are undefeated. We find ways
- 4:10Speaker 3: to crack their resume and their legacy what it is
- 4:14Speaker 3: right now. We find ways to discredit guys right now.
- 4:17Speaker 3: So if you are undefeated and you've accomplished all that
- 4:20Speaker 3: Tank has accomplished to this point of his career, and
- 4:23Speaker 3: all you've heard is, oh, he hasn't fault this person.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Oh well he's in the wrong era. Oh well he
- 4:29Speaker 3: had knock out that person, And that's all you've heard,
- 4:33Speaker 3: instead of hearing a mixture of both praise and criticism.
- 4:37Speaker 3: I understand why guys like you know what, forget it,
- 4:39Speaker 3: I'm gonna do something different again. I do not like it.
- 4:42Speaker 3: I do not agree with it. But we don't celebrate
- 4:45Speaker 3: our athletes, and we definitely don't celebrate our boxers anymore.
- 4:48Speaker 2: We do not.
- 4:49Speaker 3: There was a time period when when you were undefeated,
- 4:51Speaker 3: you were celebrated as a champion.
- 4:53Speaker 2: You were we love our champions.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Now we find any way to nitpick, criticize the all
- 5:00Speaker 3: on our champs. If you have any flaw that we
- 5:03Speaker 3: can make a case to where you should be this
- 5:05Speaker 3: or you should be that.
- 5:07Speaker 5: We do it.
- 5:07Speaker 2: And it's not fair. It's just how it goes.
- 5:10Speaker 4: And I've always pushed back against fans who do that,
- 5:13Speaker 4: who always say, well, you haven't fought enough. Guys, you
- 5:15Speaker 4: fought nobody's you know, Yeah, you didn't have one hundred
- 5:18Speaker 4: percent knockout rating, one loss in you're a bump. I've
- 5:21Speaker 4: always hated that, And yeah, I think we are too
- 5:24Speaker 4: hard on our fighters, especially with you know, dude sitting
- 5:27Speaker 4: on a couch with their little twitter fingers who never
- 5:30Speaker 4: actually been in a boxing gym, never sparred, never been
- 5:33Speaker 4: in a fight.
- 5:34Speaker 2: That's the one upsets me personally. But yeah, I mean,
- 5:37Speaker 2: I get this.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Whole system is at fault here, but there's got to
- 5:42Speaker 4: be red lines, man, you know, to have a guy
- 5:44Speaker 4: that we have said Jake Paul skipped the line, didn't
- 5:48Speaker 4: actually put in work, you know, fighting at two pm
- 5:52Speaker 4: to get his name out there, traded on name recognition
- 5:54Speaker 4: for for showcases. You know, yes, he makes a lot
- 5:58Speaker 4: of money, but that can't be our only standard.
- 6:01Speaker 2: And I feel that this is one of one of
- 6:03Speaker 2: the worst modern insults to the sport. I'll go ahead
- 6:09Speaker 2: and say it.
- 6:09Speaker 4: You know, I know we we were upset with Keshan Davis,
- 6:12Speaker 4: you know, coming in, coming in Chunky, being disrepectful to
- 6:15Speaker 4: the fans, to the sport, and you know, with good reason.
- 6:17Speaker 2: You know, I'm not saying that that was okay.
- 6:20Speaker 4: But I think this is worse to be somebody like
- 6:23Speaker 4: Tank taking an easy payday again for a fight that's
- 6:26Speaker 4: not even a real fight one five versus what you know,
- 6:30Speaker 4: how low is Paul gonna go?
- 6:31Speaker 2: Get to what I was thinking?
- 6:34Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, no, that's that's ridiculous. That's just absolutely ridiculous.
- 6:40Speaker 4: You know, it's the Dog and Pony Show. It's it's uh,
- 6:44Speaker 4: it's it's the cheapest. It's a talking monkey cartoon or
- 6:48Speaker 4: a talking baby cartoon that you know, shiny little keys
- 6:51Speaker 4: that you put in front of people.
- 6:52Speaker 2: We gotta be better, man, We've got to be better.
- 6:55Speaker 3: We do, but here's the issue, Like, here's the biggest issue.
- 7:00Speaker 3: When you're offering a certain amount of money that you
- 7:03Speaker 3: technically cannot pass up, it's very hard to be better.
- 7:06Speaker 3: But I think boxing could do that if we market
- 7:09Speaker 3: our sport better. We don't market the sport. We don't
- 7:12Speaker 3: do a good job of marketing it. They have dropped
- 7:14Speaker 3: the ball for all these years. The summer is a
- 7:17Speaker 3: dead zone when it comes to sports and content in general.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Every weekend from the beginning of spring break to the
- 7:25Speaker 3: end of summer should have a boxing match on regular
- 7:28Speaker 3: TV every weekend. We should be able to tune in
- 7:32Speaker 3: every Friday and or Saturday, say hey, such a fighting again,
- 7:36Speaker 3: let's take a look, and let's hop on whatever channel
- 7:39Speaker 3: is be able to watch that. We don't have that
- 7:41Speaker 3: no more. So, there's no anticipation, there's no buzz. I
- 7:45Speaker 3: give Floyd a lot of credit because he didn't know
- 7:47Speaker 3: how to market things, but also he created this monster
- 7:50Speaker 3: so it's tough man like. It's really upsetting because we
- 7:54Speaker 3: want to see boxer fight boxers. I want to see
- 7:57Speaker 3: Tank versus Report. I want to see Tank versus I
- 8:00Speaker 3: want to see Tank versus whomever's going to be the challenger. Uh,
- 8:04Speaker 3: And it's just not there anymore. Like it's we were
- 8:07Speaker 3: entering the very dangerous zone. When your spore can be compromised,
- 8:10Speaker 3: it's not good.
- 8:12Speaker 4: Well, we're gonna have some conversations about the state of
- 8:15Speaker 4: boxing and paper view here in a bit. But at
- 8:17Speaker 4: the end of the day, speaking against specifically about Tank,
- 8:21Speaker 4: I said the words, God damn it. I said it
- 8:23Speaker 4: a couple episodes, and you know what I think, Yes,
- 8:27Speaker 4: he's doing this for the money. Yes, he's doing this
- 8:29Speaker 4: for the payday. I also think is because he's too
- 8:32Speaker 4: scared to fight Lamont roach again. Tank Davis, you are.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Dead to me. You're dead to me, and you are
- 8:37Speaker 2: ex communicado.
- 8:39Speaker 3: I don't think he's afraid of fighting anyone. I just
- 8:41Speaker 3: think that if you have a fight where you can
- 8:44Speaker 3: make fifty plus million, you have a fight where you
- 8:46Speaker 3: can make fifteen, then you.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Take the fifty.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Especially the way he's been, you know, acting out the
- 8:53Speaker 3: ring like its fight to fight with him because you
- 8:56Speaker 3: never know what might happen.
- 8:58Speaker 2: So again, I don't think he's scared of any of
- 9:00Speaker 2: those guys.
- 9:01Speaker 3: I think after he fights Shake Paul, I think he
- 9:03Speaker 3: probably gets in the ring of one of these guys, however,
- 9:06Speaker 3: being able to because here also, here's the thing, this
- 9:09Speaker 3: payday may not be.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Here for whatever reason in six months for something happens
- 9:13Speaker 2: to Jake Paul. Who knows. You just never know. So
- 9:16Speaker 2: I get I do not like it.
- 9:18Speaker 3: But if you have a guaranteed fifty million dollars and
- 9:22Speaker 3: the year twenty twenty five, with everything going on, it'd
- 9:26Speaker 3: be very hard pressed.
- 9:27Speaker 2: And I take it.
- 9:29Speaker 4: I stand by my uh by my opinion about him
- 9:32Speaker 4: ducking Lamont roach. And you know you've made predictions on
- 9:35Speaker 4: the show with your whole chest to.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Come true both of the times.
- 9:37Speaker 4: I'm gonna say he's gonna take he's gonna take the
- 9:39Speaker 4: Paul money, and he's gonna dip, and that's gonna be it.
- 9:41Speaker 4: That's gonna be the less to hear of him. I really,
- 9:45Speaker 4: that's what That's what I feel like. It's like, why
- 9:46Speaker 4: would you do this otherwise? Again, when you have opportunities,
- 9:49Speaker 4: when you have buzz and yeah, you know, forget forget
- 9:53Speaker 4: the Lamont roach rematch. If he didn't want to do that,
- 9:57Speaker 4: there's plenty of people that are still s There's all
- 10:01Speaker 4: kinds of people right right, there's buzz again.
- 10:03Speaker 2: He's not hurting, you know, he's not.
- 10:07Speaker 4: He's not like a David Benavide is getting duck by everybody.
- 10:10Speaker 2: There's there's a chance for the ring. Yeah, so yeah,
- 10:13Speaker 2: that's how mean I think.
- 10:14Speaker 3: Let me ask you, then let me ask so, when
- 10:17Speaker 3: this fight takes place, do you think that this can
- 10:19Speaker 3: make his value even higher because there's more non boxing
- 10:23Speaker 3: fans tuning in for the first time. Do you think
- 10:26Speaker 3: his buzz can be higher, his brand can be higher
- 10:28Speaker 3: where if he does fight after this one, it makes
- 10:31Speaker 3: his draw even bigger.
- 10:33Speaker 4: I'm gonna say no, and here's why, because he's not
- 10:36Speaker 4: going to be the Tank that we all love in
- 10:39Speaker 4: that ring with somebody that's a cruiser weight.
- 10:41Speaker 2: It's almost two hundred pounds.
- 10:42Speaker 4: And then probably again there's gonna be a silent agreement
- 10:46Speaker 4: not to. I don't know that he could knock him
- 10:47Speaker 4: out because Tank is so much smaller, as much of
- 10:49Speaker 4: a knockout artist as he is at some point when
- 10:52Speaker 4: someone is just a bigger, beefier slab of meat. It's
- 10:55Speaker 4: just difficult.
- 10:56Speaker 2: You know, it doesn't matter how skilled you are. Uh So,
- 11:00Speaker 2: I do not see, you know, the tank that we
- 11:03Speaker 2: all admired in the ring being the same tank that's
- 11:06Speaker 2: gonna show up in November.
- 11:08Speaker 3: I don't think Jake Paul's are being hit by anyone
- 11:10Speaker 3: like this. When you have someone that has the power
- 11:13Speaker 3: of Tank, that's in their prime, that's not washed up
- 11:16Speaker 3: or not a non box or whatever, if it's a
- 11:20Speaker 3: real fight and Tank hits him, he's gonna he's gonna
- 11:22Speaker 3: drop like the man has power both hands.
- 11:25Speaker 2: I don't I know the way difference is different.
- 11:27Speaker 3: But when you get hit by one of those shots
- 11:29Speaker 3: and you're not use getting hit with those shots, it's
- 11:32Speaker 3: way different.
- 11:33Speaker 2: It's true, true.
- 11:34Speaker 4: And Tank also has the ring IQ to get in
- 11:37Speaker 4: right at the time to throw somebody else. Do With
- 11:39Speaker 4: Ryan Garcia, you know he knows exactly you know how
- 11:43Speaker 4: to hit the button and where and when.
- 11:46Speaker 3: And the thing is like obviously you sparred boxing. I've
- 11:50Speaker 3: been around boxers, and I know a little bit when
- 11:52Speaker 3: you get hit in the place where you're not expecting
- 11:55Speaker 3: it and you're getting hit a certain with a certain
- 12:00Speaker 3: amount of power right on the screws.
- 12:02Speaker 2: It don't matter your weight, size or whatever. You get
- 12:04Speaker 2: hit in the face or in the jaw with.
- 12:07Speaker 3: A certain type of power, you're gonna crumble. And that's
- 12:10Speaker 3: gonna happen. So we'll see. I found I'm with you.
- 12:13Speaker 3: I don't know how to fight this is. I have
- 12:14Speaker 3: no idea what this is.
- 12:16Speaker 4: And that's a fair point you just made, because yeah,
- 12:19Speaker 4: guys are bigger, guys are be frere, et cetera. But
- 12:21Speaker 4: also you're not made of anything different. You know, you're
- 12:23Speaker 4: still skit of boone so in muscle, so should still hurt.
- 12:26Speaker 4: So I can see that.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I I also don't want.
- 12:30Speaker 4: Us to get into the trap that people say, Well,
- 12:33Speaker 4: I want to see you get pulled, Jake Paul knocked out.
- 12:35Speaker 4: I want to see him get put on the ground.
- 12:37Speaker 4: So I'm gonna watch this fight to get him, watch
- 12:38Speaker 4: him get his ass kicked. That's exactly what helps, you know,
- 12:42Speaker 4: bring more people into the shams, which is what they are.
- 12:45Speaker 4: And we can't play that game, you know. It's it's
- 12:48Speaker 4: he's setting the rules, that's his game. We can't be
- 12:50Speaker 4: there showing up thinking like, oh, yeah, he's gonna be embarrassed,
- 12:54Speaker 4: Like he wouldn't allow himself to be embarrassed right in
- 12:57Speaker 4: one of those showcases. Again, he's it's his game, his
- 13:01Speaker 4: promotion and whatever. You know, I have even no opinion
- 13:04Speaker 4: of that. All I'm saying is that there is a
- 13:06Speaker 4: particular brand, and he's gotten this far because he knows
- 13:10Speaker 4: how to work the brand.
- 13:11Speaker 2: I don't even blame him as much.
- 13:13Speaker 4: I blame Tank more than anything, like I said, But
- 13:17Speaker 4: that's that's just something we'll just have to talk about this.
- 13:21Speaker 2: I'm not watching that shit. I don't know about you.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Are you actually going to tune in?
- 13:24Speaker 3: I don't watch fake fights. I don't do preseason sports.
- 13:26Speaker 3: I don't do fake fights. I don't do that. Whatever
- 13:28Speaker 3: happens happens, But I'm not really I mean, it might
- 13:31Speaker 3: be on, but I'm not gonna be focused on that,
- 13:35Speaker 3: Like I'm not watching. It might be on the background,
- 13:37Speaker 3: but I don't watch or pay I'm talking on Netflix,
- 13:39Speaker 3: I guess, so don't pay for it.
- 13:41Speaker 2: But I don't do fake fights.
- 13:44Speaker 3: I don't do any of that. I don't partake in
- 13:46Speaker 3: the Tyson stuff anything Jake Paul. I don't really support
- 13:49Speaker 3: I don't do that.
- 13:50Speaker 4: Excellent me either. So that's our statement for for this
- 13:53Speaker 4: particular fight. Weird did not participate, we will not watch,
- 13:56Speaker 4: and Tank Davis is ex communicado from the podcast. Moving
- 14:01Speaker 4: on to another topic, kind of on the same role
- 14:04Speaker 4: of you know what what the future of boxing is
- 14:07Speaker 4: going to be like? Financially speaking? You know rumors of
- 14:10Speaker 4: the top rank might sign a deal with premium cable
- 14:12Speaker 4: channel Stars with a Z. If you've never heard of it,
- 14:16Speaker 4: I don't blame you. They're a paid cable channel like
- 14:19Speaker 4: HBO or Showtime, but not as popular. They had one
- 14:22Speaker 4: big show called Power, which I've never seen, but they
- 14:24Speaker 4: were so happy to have a hit. They gave that
- 14:26Speaker 4: bitch like three spinoffs, maybe four, something like.
- 14:28Speaker 3: That, and most of them have been pretty good. Power
- 14:32Speaker 3: has been on for over a decade, about twelve years now.
- 14:35Speaker 3: It basically kept Stars afloat. It's basically kept Stars alive
- 14:38Speaker 3: without Power. I don't know if Stars is still here
- 14:41Speaker 3: to even get to this point in terms of talking
- 14:43Speaker 3: about taking on boxing.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Right and no disrespect to the show, you know, because
- 14:46Speaker 2: I've never seen it.
- 14:47Speaker 4: I have no opinion on it, no idea, but let's
- 14:49Speaker 4: be honest you know, Stars wasn't a household name.
- 14:53Speaker 2: It's never been a household name.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Uh.
- 14:55Speaker 4: You know, I have those of us who've had illegal
- 14:58Speaker 4: cable boxes. You know, we channel surf come across Stars.
- 15:00Speaker 4: You know sometimes you know, they got a movie on
- 15:03Speaker 4: Saturday Night, something that you kind of have to pay
- 15:06Speaker 4: attention to. That's what Stars is. It's not appointment television.
- 15:09Speaker 4: It's not you know, Sunday night HBO kind of a thing.
- 15:12Speaker 4: And I'm just being real about it.
- 15:13Speaker 2: You know.
- 15:14Speaker 4: The rumors are that they're about an eleven million dollar
- 15:17Speaker 4: a year deal for Top Rank to airon Stars after
- 15:22Speaker 4: Top Rank left ESPN. Just from perspective, when UFC signed
- 15:26Speaker 4: up with Paramount Plus, that is a seven year deal
- 15:28Speaker 4: with over seven billion with a B dollars over that
- 15:32Speaker 4: time period. So it really goes to show just how
- 15:35Speaker 4: far boxing has fallen. And you know, in you know,
- 15:38Speaker 4: our eyes compared to UFC, which is the way more
- 15:42Speaker 4: popular support right now, I don't know. I mean, let's
- 15:46Speaker 4: say this is true. We don't know this for a fact.
- 15:48Speaker 2: That's just rumors on the Twitter sphere.
- 15:50Speaker 4: But if this is true, I personally think it's a
- 15:52Speaker 4: step backwards because you're going back to a premium channel.
- 15:55Speaker 4: You're going off regular TV, but you're not even going
- 15:58Speaker 4: some much with a prestige like an or a Showtime,
- 16:01Speaker 4: which you know, Showtime at least has some cachet. Even
- 16:05Speaker 4: though I'm kind of sick of Dexter and I don't
- 16:07Speaker 4: want to hear it about Dexter ever again, just let
- 16:09Speaker 4: that character die off. It seems like a you know,
- 16:13Speaker 4: like not even a good idea to move forward. If
- 16:16Speaker 4: you're gonna do it, or don't go full streaming, you know,
- 16:19Speaker 4: find some deal with something like a Paramount Plus or
- 16:22Speaker 4: a Netflix.
- 16:23Speaker 2: But this seems kind of half assed to me. What
- 16:24Speaker 2: do you think? What if I told you this is
- 16:26Speaker 2: the best deal? Okay, that makes it kind of sad. Honestly,
- 16:32Speaker 2: it makesical bumps me out.
- 16:33Speaker 3: The best deal and at least people know where Stars
- 16:36Speaker 3: is at. Stars needs it because they don't have a
- 16:38Speaker 3: lot of content on that app in general, or not
- 16:42Speaker 3: a lot of original content, so it's easy to pay
- 16:45Speaker 3: for Stars that app by itself. Most cable packages have Stars,
- 16:52Speaker 3: so it's not a bad thing. It's not the worst.
- 16:54Speaker 3: It could be better, but it's not the worst. At
- 16:57Speaker 3: least knowing the name of the outlet and the production.
- 17:02Speaker 3: That's a plus. People still don't know what de Zone is.
- 17:06Speaker 3: There's a lot of people out there who don't know
- 17:07Speaker 3: where to find it, don't know anything about it.
- 17:09Speaker 2: People have heard of Stars, so Stars is a good thing.
- 17:13Speaker 3: It's something where, to be honest with you, if that's
- 17:17Speaker 3: where we're at with it, I can live with it.
- 17:20Speaker 3: I'm not thrilled with it, but I can at least
- 17:22Speaker 3: live with it because at least we have a home.
- 17:24Speaker 2: You can't argue much when you're homeless. That's a good point.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I see it when I say, it's
- 17:31Speaker 4: kind of a step backwards. Like I said, it's just
- 17:33Speaker 4: falling in purceed ESPN. Yes, it's on regular TV, but
- 17:37Speaker 4: ESPN as a model, it's a brand, it's owned by Disney.
- 17:39Speaker 4: It's like, you know, it is still cream of the
- 17:42Speaker 4: crops sports entertainment, like you know, the ESPN.
- 17:45Speaker 2: For whatever issues.
- 17:46Speaker 4: People may have with it, it's not an LCO rat,
- 17:49Speaker 4: you know what I mean. I was actually it was
- 17:52Speaker 4: actually very surprised that UFC one of the Paramount Plus
- 17:55Speaker 4: because that's not something that I hear a lot of
- 17:57Speaker 4: people talk about, like you know who you know who
- 18:00Speaker 4: is Paramount Plus Star Trek fans because they have a
- 18:03Speaker 4: shitload of Star Trek shows and that's the home for
- 18:05Speaker 4: that stuff. So but other than that, you know, I
- 18:08Speaker 4: don't just run into people that just have that. So
- 18:11Speaker 4: that's also kind of me my lack of knowledge bias
- 18:14Speaker 4: whatever about you know, what I hear out in the world.
- 18:17Speaker 4: But yeah, I still feel that Star is kind of
- 18:20Speaker 4: below the the ischel on there on Paramount plus honestly.
- 18:24Speaker 2: But I think it's better than the Zone though. I
- 18:26Speaker 2: think it's way better than the Zone.
- 18:28Speaker 3: And also, if Stars is coming with the money, Like
- 18:31Speaker 3: if they're coming with the bag and they're going to
- 18:32Speaker 3: put money and resources into it, I think it's worked.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Because here's the thing. It's one thing to have a
- 18:38Speaker 2: company say, hey, we'll put your fights on. We'll just
- 18:40Speaker 2: have the content on. That's cool, But you need a
- 18:43Speaker 2: company that's.
- 18:44Speaker 3: Going to put effort and resources into your stuff too.
- 18:48Speaker 3: You need the before the fights, behind the scenes, the
- 18:51Speaker 3: build up, you need a full effort with whatever the outlet.
- 18:55Speaker 3: If Stars is going to do that, that's a great thing.
- 18:58Speaker 3: That will help a whole lot going forward. Or because
- 19:01Speaker 3: it's like anything else, if there's a fight on and
- 19:04Speaker 3: people know where to find that fight, they're gonna watch it.
- 19:06Speaker 3: The biggest issue we have now is a lot of
- 19:08Speaker 3: fights we can't find. We can't That's that's what a
- 19:12Speaker 3: firestick or you're gonna late. But a lot of fights
- 19:15Speaker 3: around I'm not talking about the main ones. I'm talking
- 19:16Speaker 3: about there might be a C grade fighter that you
- 19:20Speaker 3: just want to see fight that you just want to
- 19:22Speaker 3: see how he's doing. You want to see, Damn, I
- 19:24Speaker 3: see him fighting a couple of fights. What's going on?
- 19:27Speaker 3: Used to be that used to be a preliminary on
- 19:29Speaker 3: an HBO card or a top ranked car. It used
- 19:32Speaker 3: to be a is one of the first ones, you know,
- 19:34Speaker 3: not necessarily three pm one, but you know it was,
- 19:37Speaker 3: you know, it was one of the more for the
- 19:39Speaker 3: standards all the way field, but at least it was there.
- 19:41Speaker 3: That's not even the case, no moral, but whenever there's
- 19:44Speaker 3: boxing on TV, we only see the main event, and
- 19:48Speaker 3: there's a co main event, and then maybe somebody's really
- 19:51Speaker 3: up and coming, like somebody that's heralded up and coming.
- 19:54Speaker 2: That's it.
- 19:55Speaker 3: There's no a man. This dude was twenty one three
- 19:59Speaker 3: years ago. He took the loss of he's battles. But nah,
- 20:02Speaker 3: that's gone, that's out. That's long gone. So if Stars
- 20:06Speaker 3: is gonna be invested to where they're gonna constantly put
- 20:09Speaker 3: on boxing, do the background on for I think it's
- 20:12Speaker 3: a good thing we can build.
- 20:13Speaker 2: We can start from there and go forward.
- 20:15Speaker 3: But if it's gonna be oh, we're just gonna throw
- 20:17Speaker 3: the fights on and that's it, we've got issues at
- 20:20Speaker 3: that point.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Yeah, you and I will have will show up.
- 20:24Speaker 4: You and I will sign up for Stars. I will
- 20:26Speaker 4: pay for Stars if they have boxing on it. But
- 20:29Speaker 4: that's not what.
- 20:29Speaker 2: We need to do here.
- 20:30Speaker 4: We don't need to just bring the guys that already
- 20:32Speaker 4: follow boxing and want to find where the fights are.
- 20:34Speaker 4: We want to get new eyeballs on it. And you
- 20:36Speaker 4: need promo, Like you said, you need to put money
- 20:39Speaker 4: not just into you know, Bob Aarum's pocket, but you know, commercials, ads,
- 20:43Speaker 4: et cetera.
- 20:44Speaker 3: So I will say, if they do put on Stars,
- 20:48Speaker 3: Stars can cross market and cross reference to people who
- 20:52Speaker 3: are already on their app watching other stuff. Because so,
- 20:56Speaker 3: long story short, ESPN Plus doesn't make a whole lot
- 20:59Speaker 3: of money. ESPN Plus is basically the marketing tool for
- 21:03Speaker 3: ESPN and.
- 21:04Speaker 2: All their products and programs. Et cetera.
- 21:07Speaker 3: That's why it's there. Same thing with Amazon. Putting something
- 21:09Speaker 3: on Amazon doesn't make Amazon a lot of money. It's
- 21:12Speaker 3: the marketing for Amazon. They can market whatever they want
- 21:14Speaker 3: on there. So if Stars can for all their other
- 21:18Speaker 3: shows that people watch religiously, especially powered on the spin offs,
- 21:21Speaker 3: if they have marketing for fights that are upcoming, you're
- 21:24Speaker 3: gonna see that a few times before you actue your
- 21:27Speaker 3: your programming. That's actually good. That's better for boxing what
- 21:31Speaker 3: we have right now.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Yeah, that's fair.
- 21:34Speaker 4: And Stars, I know that you can get the channel
- 21:37Speaker 4: through other subscription service, so like you can go through
- 21:39Speaker 4: Amazon and sign up for Stars there, you can go
- 21:41Speaker 4: through Apple TV and sign up for Stars there.
- 21:43Speaker 2: So that's not that's not the worst.
- 21:46Speaker 4: You know, you're you're kind of make me feel a
- 21:47Speaker 4: little better about the situation now that we're talking about it.
- 21:49Speaker 4: You know, I was kind of I was kind of like, oh,
- 21:52Speaker 4: Top Prage, what happened to you?
- 21:53Speaker 2: Here?
- 21:54Speaker 4: You were so you know, you were the crown jewel
- 21:56Speaker 4: of boxing and now you're going to Stars with a ze.
- 22:00Speaker 3: So it's tough because we're entering an error where a
- 22:05Speaker 3: lot of boxers are in for themselves. Even if they're
- 22:08Speaker 3: on a promotion company. It's not Top Ranked, don King,
- 22:13Speaker 3: Golden Boy, et cetera, et cetera. It's now every box
- 22:16Speaker 3: is their own entity and they're doing the best for
- 22:19Speaker 3: their entity, et cetera. Was best for the brand. No
- 22:21Speaker 3: one really cares about the promotion company anymore. We've gone
- 22:25Speaker 3: away from that because back in the day, if it
- 22:27Speaker 3: was be between Golden Boy and Top Rank, then that's
- 22:30Speaker 3: what it was the whole night. If it was a
- 22:31Speaker 3: top rank production, it'd be eight top rank fighters fighting
- 22:34Speaker 3: on the cards that we see and that'd be that.
- 22:37Speaker 3: That's not the case anymore. Everybody is to the point
- 22:39Speaker 3: where we want to make the fights. I talked to you,
- 22:42Speaker 3: We set it up, and that's it. There's no more, Oh,
- 22:44Speaker 3: we gotta wait for this, We wait for that. No
- 22:47Speaker 3: boxes are taking things into their own hand more than
- 22:50Speaker 3: ever before, and I think we're seeing more and more
- 22:53Speaker 3: than that, especially with the Saudi's being involved and everything.
- 22:56Speaker 3: So I think it's more of a situation where you
- 23:00Speaker 3: have to adapt to that. I think you can have
- 23:02Speaker 3: fights on a case by case basis or the out
- 23:05Speaker 3: where was cover boxing gets in line with the Saudi's
- 23:09Speaker 3: and everybody in control banking the fights, and we can
- 23:12Speaker 3: figure it out because there's a pathway there to where
- 23:15Speaker 3: there can be a lot of fights on TV.
- 23:17Speaker 2: We just got to figure it out, man, we really do.
- 23:20Speaker 4: Yeah, you're reminding me that I kind of There's something
- 23:23Speaker 4: that I never really realized about boxing in general, is that,
- 23:27Speaker 4: you know.
- 23:27Speaker 2: I always say it's I don't have to follow teams.
- 23:29Speaker 5: I don't.
- 23:29Speaker 4: I can only follow whoever's in the ring. But yeah,
- 23:32Speaker 4: there were team sports there. You don't tell you top
- 23:34Speaker 4: the team Golden Boy.
- 23:35Speaker 3: That's so Golden Boys slash Mayweather Promotions versus Top Ranked
- 23:41Speaker 3: was like bloods and crips.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Back in the day.
- 23:43Speaker 3: You it was very fine line between who you rocked
- 23:46Speaker 3: with and who you were fan of and who you
- 23:49Speaker 3: supported because between the mid two thousands and like hell,
- 23:56Speaker 3: probably up until the mid twenty tens, a lot of
- 23:58Speaker 3: fights didn't get made because of that because if you
- 24:01Speaker 3: were on one brand, you were not getting the fight
- 24:04Speaker 3: with someone else's other brand. Until Mayweather and Pachuil fought
- 24:07Speaker 3: in fifteen, there was no mixture of the of the
- 24:10Speaker 3: promotion companies. The promotion companies have their own guys fight
- 24:14Speaker 3: their own guys, and Karen Crawford is the biggest victim
- 24:17Speaker 3: of all this. He didn't get to fight Spence until
- 24:19Speaker 3: way later. Imagine if he had a Mega fight five
- 24:22Speaker 3: years before that. His whole career is different, you know,
- 24:26Speaker 3: and that hurt. That hurt boxing a lot when it
- 24:30Speaker 3: was hey man, it's a Golden Boy event, so you
- 24:32Speaker 3: know it's gonna be all Golden Boy fighters and all
- 24:34Speaker 3: Midwather promotion fighters, you know, or so loud Bello event.
- 24:38Speaker 2: You know, it's all his fighters and guys who don't
- 24:40Speaker 2: have approached you know, you already knew what it was.
- 24:42Speaker 3: So like todp Ray had a strangle on ESPN, which
- 24:45Speaker 3: was cool because atleast they had a guy it'd be
- 24:48Speaker 3: marketed for the week before the fight. But you need
- 24:51Speaker 3: for boxing, you need matchups to be made consistently. You
- 24:55Speaker 3: need the names that people know, and I don't care
- 24:58Speaker 3: what brand may are. You need the names of, Like,
- 25:00Speaker 3: hey man, you know what f it, sir, cur you're
- 25:04Speaker 3: fighting Boots. I don't care what promotion company you're on.
- 25:07Speaker 3: I don't care what's going on this the fight, figure
- 25:09Speaker 3: out the financials and in four months y'all fighting and
- 25:13Speaker 3: Massive Square Garden.
- 25:14Speaker 2: This is what it is. That's it. But we went
- 25:17Speaker 2: We went went out. That's so here.
- 25:18Speaker 3: The thing you and I are old up to remember
- 25:20Speaker 3: that if guys wanted to fight, they fought.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it didn't matter.
- 25:23Speaker 3: About what promotion company you're with. If we came up
- 25:26Speaker 3: in the eighties and nineties where if you want to
- 25:29Speaker 3: fight somebody, hey, set it up, let's go, let's get it,
- 25:32Speaker 3: let's fear out the money, let's go. Now, it was, oh, well,
- 25:35Speaker 3: I gotta talk to al Hamen, I gotta talk to
- 25:37Speaker 3: Al Haimen.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Ah, well, you know, uh, you know, God talked to Bob.
- 25:41Speaker 3: You know, I got and I was like, nah, man,
- 25:43Speaker 3: I don't know, no, And we wasted a lot of
- 25:47Speaker 3: time avoiding big fights and that all all that ship
- 25:50Speaker 3: was a paper cut. When you have a bunch of
- 25:53Speaker 3: paper cuts, at least somebody bleeding out. And that's what happened.
- 25:56Speaker 3: That's why we have the ship we're in now.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Cut. Yeah.
- 26:01Speaker 4: What I've always loved about Boxing two is the simplicity
- 26:03Speaker 4: of it. You tune in the bell rings and that's it.
- 26:05Speaker 4: That's all you got to know.
- 26:06Speaker 2: But also all the stuff that I'm learning doing the
- 26:08Speaker 2: show is fascinating.
- 26:10Speaker 4: All this history that i've missed out on You know,
- 26:11Speaker 4: I had no idea that top rank in Mayweather promotions
- 26:14Speaker 4: were that.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Oh it was.
- 26:17Speaker 3: It was the Cold War during a time where both
- 26:21Speaker 3: most companies had guys like That's the thing that sucked
- 26:24Speaker 3: is that both especially at like the Walter Wait middleweight division,
- 26:29Speaker 3: they had guys where if you would have made the fights,
- 26:32Speaker 3: you would have had dope ass fights. But it just
- 26:34Speaker 3: never worked out that way because so Floyd left top
- 26:39Speaker 3: rank and went the Golden War before he did his
- 26:42Speaker 3: own thing, so that in his self started a cold
- 26:44Speaker 3: world by itself. And then Floyd fought Oscar and seven
- 26:48Speaker 3: and that made and that was the last fight. Floyd
- 26:50Speaker 3: was the b side because Oscar was still Oscar name
- 26:53Speaker 3: wise and popularity wise. After that fight, Floyd did his
- 26:56Speaker 3: own thing and became maybe with the promotion Pretty Boy
- 27:00Speaker 3: Floyd the whole thing. That made a whole lot more money,
- 27:04Speaker 3: and that started the whole war between everyone. And then
- 27:08Speaker 3: you had so Floyd and then they did their own thing.
- 27:12Speaker 3: You had a top rank not going business with Floyd
- 27:15Speaker 3: because they broke up, and then Oscar and Bob had
- 27:18Speaker 3: their issues, so there was no big fights being made
- 27:22Speaker 3: between you. That's why the Floyd and pachyall fight was
- 27:25Speaker 3: a big deal. Not because it was the two biggest
- 27:27Speaker 3: names in the sport. It's because, hey, we can finally
- 27:30Speaker 3: new business. Now, we finally have a common ground. So
- 27:32Speaker 3: that's why over the last ten years you have seen
- 27:35Speaker 3: more fights be made, not as quickly as we want
- 27:37Speaker 3: them to be, but.
- 27:38Speaker 2: They got made. So yeah, now that it.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Was a big deal, and then we missed out probably
- 27:43Speaker 3: on ten semi mega fights because of that war, easily.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Well clearly, clearly. Yeah, Like I said that that bloodied
- 27:52Speaker 2: the sport.
- 27:52Speaker 4: No pun intended to the point that it's it's I'm
- 27:55Speaker 4: not gonna say it's on life support, but it's it's
- 27:57Speaker 4: been hurting.
- 27:58Speaker 2: It's been really hurting.
- 27:59Speaker 4: And just because of that period, you know this, this
- 28:01Speaker 4: is why our show is rated E for educational because
- 28:03Speaker 4: of stuff like that, not just the audience. But I
- 28:06Speaker 4: love learning about this stuff too, because, as I said,
- 28:08Speaker 4: I had goggles off, I had blinders on.
- 28:10Speaker 2: It's just like you two guys. Even today, I'll scroll
- 28:13Speaker 2: there's a random fight.
- 28:14Speaker 4: I don't care who's fighting. I don't know, I don't
- 28:17Speaker 4: know their names. It doesn't matter. I just enjoy watching
- 28:19Speaker 4: a good match, you know, so that's kind of always
- 28:22Speaker 4: what I've been like, and I just kind of missed
- 28:23Speaker 4: out and all of this extra you know, politics of
- 28:26Speaker 4: it backroom deelans.
- 28:29Speaker 3: It's tough because Floyd to hand picked a lot of guys,
- 28:32Speaker 3: and he had the leverage to do so once you
- 28:35Speaker 3: accomplish certain thing, you have the leverage to do whatever
- 28:37Speaker 3: you want to do at whatever time. He hand picked guys,
- 28:41Speaker 3: and it was he created this air that we're in now,
- 28:44Speaker 3: where you pick and choose, you take your time, you
- 28:47Speaker 3: do things on your own time.
- 28:48Speaker 2: It was not always like that.
- 28:50Speaker 3: But also a lot of guys come to Vegas and
- 28:53Speaker 3: train out here and don't necessarily stay focused. So guys
- 28:57Speaker 3: like Winky Wright, that's a guy that was a very
- 29:00Speaker 3: good fighter in his day. He'd fight whomever. But same time,
- 29:05Speaker 3: it wouldn't be the same when it came to you know,
- 29:09Speaker 3: for fights, it wouldn't necessarily have the same wide range
- 29:13Speaker 3: of options as if you know, if things were done
- 29:18Speaker 3: a certain way. And those are guys that there's a
- 29:20Speaker 3: lot of fights got missed, a lot of fights that
- 29:22Speaker 3: could have been made. Hell, there was rumors of there
- 29:26Speaker 3: was time where Sergio Martinez was trying to fight Floyd
- 29:30Speaker 3: and this was when we found out Sergio Martinez was
- 29:33Speaker 3: beyond his prime. And yeah, it was just a lot
- 29:37Speaker 3: of things, man, it was.
- 29:38Speaker 2: It was wild times like we had.
- 29:40Speaker 3: I remember when people said Floyd was afraid of Paul Williams.
- 29:45Speaker 3: This is wild man, This is really wild times wild
- 29:48Speaker 3: times man. So, uh, it's fascinating. But boxing has gotten
- 29:51Speaker 3: his own way so much that it needs to find
- 29:53Speaker 3: a home because everybody else has a home, like w
- 29:56Speaker 3: W has to deal with ESPN, they have a home,
- 29:59Speaker 3: UFC found a home. Boxing needs to find a home
- 30:03Speaker 3: quickly because we're gonna watch. But you need for anything
- 30:08Speaker 3: you're in, you need the non fanatics to chime in.
- 30:12Speaker 3: And if you can't find what channel it's on, or
- 30:15Speaker 3: if you can't find the link, you're you're asking a lot, man,
- 30:18Speaker 3: You're asking a whole lot.
- 30:20Speaker 4: Yeah, people aren't gonna work that hard when there's so
- 30:22Speaker 4: many options for entertainment, you know, and not even just
- 30:24Speaker 4: talking about combat sports or sports in general, just anything.
- 30:27Speaker 4: I mean streaming movies, TV shows, anything people will get
- 30:32Speaker 4: you know, find an old TV show from the night
- 30:35Speaker 4: is on twov's that they'll get into. And that's just
- 30:38Speaker 4: that's what they're spending their time doing you know, watching,
- 30:40Speaker 4: I don't know whatever, like are you afraid of the
- 30:42Speaker 4: dark from when we were kids or something as.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Adult like that. You know, there's just so much as
- 30:46Speaker 2: out there right now.
- 30:47Speaker 4: So yeah, everybody's competing for eyeballs more than more than ever,
- 30:51Speaker 4: and it's really.
- 30:52Speaker 2: Difficult for boxing.
- 30:53Speaker 4: And I want to kind of continue on this topic
- 30:56Speaker 4: but expand it a little bit, talking specifically about pay
- 30:59Speaker 4: per view because UFC said on Paramount Plus no more
- 31:03Speaker 4: pay per views. Turkey Yella Shikh Saudi promoter said for
- 31:07Speaker 4: his events in riodd and the ring events, no.
- 31:10Speaker 2: More pay per view.
- 31:11Speaker 4: And I'm just curious what you think about, you know,
- 31:13Speaker 4: where pay per view is going to stay in with boxing,
- 31:15Speaker 4: because that's already taken a big hit.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Let me start here.
- 31:20Speaker 4: Let me ask you this, when's the last time you
- 31:21Speaker 4: actually paid for a pay per view? And I mean
- 31:24Speaker 4: like didn't use in legal cable box in the nineties.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Didn't use a link. Can you remember it was a
- 31:30Speaker 2: tank fight okay two years ago? Okay, it was on Showtime,
- 31:36Speaker 2: it was through Showtime.
- 31:38Speaker 3: It was the same time as NBA playoffs in twenty three,
- 31:44Speaker 3: so it was spring of twenty three. Whoever he fought
- 31:47Speaker 3: in spring of twenty three is the fight I can
- 31:50Speaker 3: And the only reason I did it is I had
- 31:51Speaker 3: people over and I wanted to make sure the stream
- 31:54Speaker 3: was or that it was gonna be okay, like the
- 31:56Speaker 3: fight was gonna be.
- 31:58Speaker 2: I couldn't.
- 31:58Speaker 3: I didn't want to depend on those strings and the internet.
- 32:01Speaker 3: I had like six people over and I wanted to
- 32:02Speaker 3: make sure everything was cool. But that's it. Other than that,
- 32:05Speaker 3: I don't really recall paying for anything else. But here's
- 32:08Speaker 3: the issue. The economy is so bad right now. I
- 32:11Speaker 3: don't want to make this about politics, so that's not
- 32:13Speaker 3: what we're here from do. But the economy along with
- 32:17Speaker 3: the you got to read the room. When it comes
- 32:20Speaker 3: asking for one hundred dollars every other month or whatever.
- 32:23Speaker 2: People ain't got it. So if people don't have it,
- 32:25Speaker 2: you cannot.
- 32:27Speaker 3: You cannot go ahead and demand people pay one hundred
- 32:31Speaker 3: dollars one hundred and ten for HD pay per view.
- 32:33Speaker 2: They just don't have it. It's very unfair to ask
- 32:36Speaker 2: for that.
- 32:36Speaker 3: So yeah, man, it's a dead model at the moment,
- 32:39Speaker 3: and I don't think it's coming be back.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:41Speaker 4: And by the way, that had to have been Tank
- 32:44Speaker 4: versus Anger. Seeah, because you're talking about agree, that's that's
- 32:47Speaker 4: when Well, I myself have never paid for a pay
- 32:51Speaker 4: per view.
- 32:51Speaker 2: But also I've gone out.
- 32:52Speaker 4: I like going out to two bars that play the fight.
- 32:55Speaker 4: So you know, I'm not trying to say that I'm
- 32:57Speaker 4: stealing everything. That's kind of just how I enjoyed watching
- 33:02Speaker 4: boxing anyway. Yeah, I watch it at home of course,
- 33:04Speaker 4: but it's always cooler to me go out and have
- 33:06Speaker 4: a few drinks, have dinner, make a night out of it.
- 33:10Speaker 4: So yeah, like for guys like us, you know, I've
- 33:13Speaker 4: never experienced, you know, a lot of.
- 33:16Speaker 2: Pay per views. In the nineties, like I said, we
- 33:17Speaker 2: had the box. I remember paying for Goodnesses Chevins fights.
- 33:20Speaker 4: When my family would get together, they had the legitimate
- 33:22Speaker 4: box where you called in with the code.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Uh. But at some point in the mid nineties, you know,
- 33:27Speaker 2: it was all black boxes. It was oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 33:30Speaker 2: yeah yeah.
- 33:31Speaker 3: I had a got my godfather, he always had fight
- 33:35Speaker 3: night at his house. Always, every big fight, every big
- 33:38Speaker 3: fight he had up until I was like seventeen. He
- 33:41Speaker 3: always had people over at the house. And then when
- 33:43Speaker 3: he didn't have it, my dad had a fight. Yeah,
- 33:46Speaker 3: every big fight we always watched. I never knew who
- 33:49Speaker 3: ordered how guys knew by Tommy got there and we
- 33:52Speaker 3: had wings on the plate.
- 33:54Speaker 2: The fight was on the stream was it was on
- 33:56Speaker 2: the TV and we all watch.
- 33:58Speaker 3: So no, it's uh, it's this is a die model
- 34:00Speaker 3: because I think you can market more when you have
- 34:04Speaker 3: a guaranteed amount of eyeballs. So the reason why Amazon
- 34:07Speaker 3: and Netflix work is if you can promise that there's
- 34:10Speaker 3: gonna be fifty million people worldwide watching something, if you're
- 34:14Speaker 3: marketing a product, you can act your advertisers for so
- 34:18Speaker 3: much more money then you can fend them on pay
- 34:20Speaker 3: per view. So you think about, like, okay, if Pepsi
- 34:24Speaker 3: wants to if Pepsi wants to market during this time,
- 34:30Speaker 3: we can charge x amount more because there's gonna be
- 34:33Speaker 3: so many more people watching this stream for three hours,
- 34:37Speaker 3: rather than hey, it's pay per view. You might get
- 34:40Speaker 3: a million buys if everything goes well, maybe a million
- 34:43Speaker 3: and a half everything goes well. I don't know how
- 34:46Speaker 3: you gauge that, but if you got a stream on
- 34:48Speaker 3: for three plus hours, you can market a bunch of
- 34:51Speaker 3: products to a lot of people who are watching casually,
- 34:55Speaker 3: people who are watching intensely and you can make the
- 34:58Speaker 3: money back that way, so that while we're seeing more
- 35:01Speaker 3: Netflix and Amazon and the Zone, we're seeing more of
- 35:04Speaker 3: those because there's more eyeballs. And there's more eyeballs, you
- 35:08Speaker 3: can charge more for the marketing and the ads more
- 35:10Speaker 3: than anything else.
- 35:12Speaker 4: Well, for something like Amazon, it's not even only about
- 35:15Speaker 4: the marketing. It's hey, you want to watch this fight
- 35:17Speaker 4: on Prime Video? Sign up for Prime by the way,
- 35:19Speaker 4: free shipping, all the shit that we sell you. You know,
- 35:21Speaker 4: it's just it's like its own ecosystem. Netflix, Yeah, good,
- 35:26Speaker 4: it's for you.
- 35:27Speaker 2: You're spot on.
- 35:28Speaker 3: Because when they have NFL games on they don't really
- 35:31Speaker 3: care about the game itself. They have a game on
- 35:34Speaker 3: Black Friday, which is like the most business day of
- 35:38Speaker 3: the year for shoppers. They know that they can get
- 35:41Speaker 3: people to eventure sign up for Amazon Prime if they
- 35:44Speaker 3: show them enough commercials.
- 35:46Speaker 2: Same thing.
- 35:46Speaker 3: If you have a big boxing match on Amazon for
- 35:48Speaker 3: four hours, then yeah, you're gonna see an ad every
- 35:51Speaker 3: thirty seconds. You're gonna see something on the bottom of
- 35:54Speaker 3: the screen saying hey, if you're not a member scanning
- 35:56Speaker 3: this QR code, we can side you up.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Now.
- 35:58Speaker 3: If that market it's more, they don't have to make
- 36:01Speaker 3: money on the fight or to.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Make money on the fight, if you get what I'm.
- 36:04Speaker 4: Saying, Yeah, oh absolutely, Well the pay per view model,
- 36:07Speaker 4: I know, like that's how boxers became some of the
- 36:10Speaker 4: most best paid athletes in the world. You know, they
- 36:12Speaker 4: got cuts of pay per view, And that part of
- 36:14Speaker 4: me was wondering, Okay, there's no pay per view. Does
- 36:16Speaker 4: that mean we're back to the conversation we were just
- 36:19Speaker 4: having about there's not enough money for fighters to make
- 36:22Speaker 4: or is it that Amazon Netflix have a shill lot
- 36:25Speaker 4: of money.
- 36:25Speaker 2: They have so much money to burn.
- 36:27Speaker 4: Because it's always a constant stream in and the back out,
- 36:30Speaker 4: in the back out.
- 36:30Speaker 2: It's like they don't even like it. Feels like they
- 36:33Speaker 2: don't even think about it.
- 36:33Speaker 4: They're spending you know, millions and millions of dollars on
- 36:36Speaker 4: original movies on Netflix that nobody watches and nobody likes
- 36:39Speaker 4: even if they watch them.
- 36:41Speaker 3: Well, well, the Netflix model is tough because if you
- 36:44Speaker 3: put out a whole season worth to work at midnight,
- 36:47Speaker 3: by three pm the next day, I can watch the
- 36:50Speaker 3: whole season if I want to, and it's over, like
- 36:53Speaker 3: it's over, so you run out of content. So that's
- 36:56Speaker 3: why they need live content. That's why they've had fights
- 36:59Speaker 3: on They've had NFL gangs, because it gets to a
- 37:02Speaker 3: point to where, hey, man, if you don't have enough content,
- 37:07Speaker 3: people go to where there is new content at So
- 37:10Speaker 3: that's why Netflix is always in the running for these
- 37:12Speaker 3: things because they need live content.
- 37:15Speaker 2: They need to be able to market.
- 37:16Speaker 3: Not necessarily Netflix itself, but all the other advertisements they
- 37:20Speaker 3: have agreements with because they can make more money off
- 37:22Speaker 3: of that, and that's where that's where it comes from.
- 37:26Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess the big question not even like something
- 37:29Speaker 4: we can answer, but is that is there enough money
- 37:33Speaker 4: with Amazon and Netflix to make big fights that you know,
- 37:36Speaker 4: guys don't want to fight each other?
- 37:38Speaker 2: But also what kind of advertising are we going to get?
- 37:41Speaker 2: You know, what kind of promotion? Is it just guys
- 37:43Speaker 2: who are lucky enough?
- 37:44Speaker 4: Is it Canelos, you know, signing up with Netflix and
- 37:47Speaker 4: taking a big payday and you know, let's see air
- 37:50Speaker 4: Canelos fights aren't always like fighting, you know, the biggest
- 37:55Speaker 4: challenger it could be you know, William Skull. People weren't
- 37:57Speaker 4: that excited anyway, He'll they can pay day for another
- 38:01Speaker 4: fight through Netflix. He'll make big bucks. But will the
- 38:04Speaker 4: people be there will they show up. I know they're
- 38:05Speaker 4: showing up for for a fight against Crawford, but what
- 38:08Speaker 4: about the rando British guy whose name I remember, John
- 38:13Speaker 4: Ryder who we fought, or a people gonna show up
- 38:16Speaker 4: for Canelo versus writer rebatch a Netflix?
- 38:19Speaker 2: Are they going to care? He'll be happy marketing very well.
- 38:23Speaker 3: The thing I will say is if Netflix has program
- 38:26Speaker 3: that's coming on soon, they will market it well across
- 38:29Speaker 3: all their platforms. So if you're there watching a sci
- 38:31Speaker 3: fi flick at eleven PM while you're waiting on your
- 38:35Speaker 3: significant other to come join you, you're gonna see a
- 38:39Speaker 3: promo of Canelo fighting promo in the fight, So it'll
- 38:42Speaker 3: be marketed better.
- 38:43Speaker 2: But I don't know if that's enough. We don't. We
- 38:45Speaker 2: don't have enough research to know if that's gonna matter
- 38:48Speaker 2: or not.
- 38:49Speaker 4: Well, and totally speaking, I don't see Netflix marketing their
- 38:52Speaker 4: stuff as well, because there are things that I hear about,
- 38:55Speaker 4: you know, a year late afterwards, Oh this this new
- 38:58Speaker 4: original film or regional series was on there, and I
- 39:00Speaker 4: was like, I didn't see anything online stuff that I
- 39:03Speaker 4: would be interested in.
- 39:04Speaker 2: So their original stuff they don't really market that way.
- 39:07Speaker 3: If they like to use word of mouth marketing for
- 39:09Speaker 3: their original content, but for like the live event stuff.
- 39:12Speaker 3: Whenever they have like a live event, they actually go
- 39:14Speaker 3: all in with the marketing on that.
- 39:16Speaker 4: Okay, okay, Yeah, I haven't actually watched live it on
- 39:18Speaker 4: Netflix to be to be fair, so I wasn't aware
- 39:21Speaker 4: of that. Yeah, my relationship with Netflix is like, oh,
- 39:24Speaker 4: this director who I like, whoever, you know, just made
- 39:27Speaker 4: a movie a year ago that I would have gone
- 39:29Speaker 4: I would have rushed to see in theaters, but it
- 39:31Speaker 4: was buried on Netflix and it just sat there without me.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Reality. That's kind of my experience with them. But yeah,
- 39:36Speaker 2: with live events, I just I just don't know. But
- 39:39Speaker 2: I'm not a WWE guy, so I've never.
- 39:42Speaker 3: Said, yeah, I I've changed my tune a little bit.
- 39:47Speaker 3: I take for what it is. It's not mess a
- 39:50Speaker 3: my forte. But I appreciate the entertainment value what they bring.
- 39:55Speaker 3: I think they they work very hard. They do what
- 39:58Speaker 3: they do. I'm not going to go out watch every
- 40:00Speaker 3: event and that's not what I do, but I appreciate
- 40:02Speaker 3: the effort they put towards their product, I'll put it
- 40:05Speaker 3: that way.
- 40:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I've been to I actually went to one live
- 40:08Speaker 4: WW in Phoenix, a buddy of mine, shot up Dan Brunner,
- 40:11Speaker 4: who's no longer in Arizona.
- 40:12Speaker 2: We were at a beer sharing.
- 40:13Speaker 4: He was like, brill you know, is wrestling as it's
- 40:17Speaker 4: like the purest form of live vender Simon, we'll just
- 40:19Speaker 4: ghost to see it, and I was like, Zebra, let's
- 40:22Speaker 4: go see it whenever that we're going to go.
- 40:24Speaker 2: I just I don't know. It was like, yeah, why
- 40:26Speaker 2: wouldn't I go see wrestling with this guy? I have
- 40:29Speaker 2: a lot of fun. I had a lot of fun.
- 40:30Speaker 4: John Cena was there, you know, I like him, So
- 40:33Speaker 4: it was I understand why it's so popular. And yeah,
- 40:37Speaker 4: you know you say, oh it's fake, it's scripted. He's
- 40:39Speaker 4: still got to be a great athlete to.
- 40:41Speaker 2: Be yeah's amazing. Yeah, yeah, you can't just be a
- 40:45Speaker 2: fat guy. That's like, you know, going into the ring
- 40:47Speaker 2: with with stone called Steve Austin.
- 40:50Speaker 4: You know so, But yeah, I mean bring it back
- 40:53Speaker 4: to what we're talking about, you know, the pay per
- 40:54Speaker 4: view model.
- 40:55Speaker 2: I honestly.
- 40:57Speaker 4: It's it doesn't that's not gonna affect me because I
- 41:00Speaker 4: never paid for boxing anyway. If there's a paper you fight,
- 41:02Speaker 4: I want to see. I'm not gonna pay for it
- 41:05Speaker 4: to sit at home, even with friends over, it's not
- 41:07Speaker 4: the same. I'm gonna go.
- 41:08Speaker 2: Out to a place that will play fights.
- 41:10Speaker 4: So but I don't see that being, you know, an
- 41:14Speaker 4: ongoing thing, like you said, maybe ever again, that might
- 41:17Speaker 4: be another era.
- 41:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's gone.
- 41:22Speaker 3: It's everything comes in waves, and unfortunately at this time
- 41:26Speaker 3: that wave is now gone.
- 41:27Speaker 2: It's and we're not it's not coming back.
- 41:29Speaker 3: It's it's one of those things where you can't ask
- 41:34Speaker 3: people to spend that kind of money where they.
- 41:36Speaker 2: Don't have it.
- 41:38Speaker 3: And the average person does not have one hundred plus
- 41:41Speaker 3: dollars to lot to pay for a single fight is
- 41:45Speaker 3: don't have it.
- 41:46Speaker 2: I don't know, but maybe it's our age now. You know,
- 41:48Speaker 2: we're both late thirties, early parties, but I don't have
- 41:54Speaker 2: that many friends anymore to bring over to a fight.
- 41:55Speaker 4: Back back in the day, you would split up a
- 41:57Speaker 4: pay per view with like eight guys and you know,
- 41:59Speaker 4: a couple and stuff, you know, ten people to want
- 42:01Speaker 4: to pitch.
- 42:02Speaker 2: In ten bucks or brain food or whatever. Yeah, yeah,
- 42:05Speaker 2: I can't.
- 42:06Speaker 4: I might have been able to do that back in
- 42:07Speaker 4: my twenties, I think now now I'm thinking out I'm like,
- 42:09Speaker 4: who the hell am I gonnavite that?
- 42:11Speaker 3: And also it's like the fights haven't been that great
- 42:15Speaker 3: to do that. The thing is you have buyer's remorse
- 42:18Speaker 3: once you pay for the final. A lot of times
- 42:20Speaker 3: you spend the seventy five or one hundred or whatever,
- 42:23Speaker 3: and you're like, yeah, this is it.
- 42:25Speaker 2: I No, I don't know. So I'm with you there,
- 42:29Speaker 2: I'm with you.
- 42:30Speaker 4: Hell, I've seen fights at at bars that I'm and
- 42:34Speaker 4: you have a good time going out, you know, having drinks,
- 42:36Speaker 4: having food.
- 42:37Speaker 2: But I know I watched that fight.
- 42:38Speaker 4: I'm like, if I had paid for that eight bucks
- 42:40Speaker 4: at home, I would have a pissed would have pissed.
- 42:43Speaker 2: So I get it. And that's probably why too.
- 42:45Speaker 4: I'm just kind of like I don't want to risk
- 42:47Speaker 4: spending that much for that, for that experience.
- 42:50Speaker 2: I'd rather make it all inclusive.
- 42:53Speaker 4: But yeah, I mean, here's here's another thing that I
- 42:55Speaker 4: worry about that I think we might have our pulse
- 42:59Speaker 4: on the our fingers on the pulse of you know,
- 43:02Speaker 4: boxing fans and how the people are these days with
- 43:05Speaker 4: the economy, et cetera. But I don't know that a
- 43:08Speaker 4: lot of these companies, how about this, It wouldn't be surprised.
- 43:10Speaker 4: Wouldn't surprise me if Top rank goes to Stars and
- 43:12Speaker 4: still tries to do a pay per view because they
- 43:14Speaker 4: don't realize how they can't.
- 43:17Speaker 3: The reason why is this, you've already forced people to
- 43:20Speaker 3: down to buy an app, to sign up for the
- 43:23Speaker 3: monthly subscription of an app. You cannot accept a pay
- 43:26Speaker 3: per view. And also, here's the thing, we don't have
- 43:29Speaker 3: any pay per view stars anymore. There's no one up
- 43:31Speaker 3: and coming that the pay review is star. Like Tank's
- 43:34Speaker 3: been on pay per view, but he's not star to
- 43:36Speaker 3: where he's doing two million plus. That's not happening. I
- 43:39Speaker 3: don't know if he's done a million on a pay
- 43:42Speaker 3: per view, and if he did, it was with Ryning because
- 43:44Speaker 3: Ryan was popular. But it's not like, oh he's doing
- 43:46Speaker 3: one point five and he's under thirty years old.
- 43:50Speaker 2: We don't have that.
- 43:51Speaker 3: So that option is saying available, like as good as
- 43:55Speaker 3: your core Stevenson is, he can't find a pay per view, can't.
- 43:58Speaker 2: There's no way, There's no way.
- 44:01Speaker 4: I guess the biggest name is Canelo, but even he
- 44:03Speaker 4: signed up with four fights with three Yazeason and if
- 44:05Speaker 4: they're sticking to their word, of not you know, doing
- 44:08Speaker 4: pay per view, then the biggest, the biggest pay per
- 44:10Speaker 4: view guy of recent memory is just not.
- 44:12Speaker 2: Going to do that.
- 44:13Speaker 3: So he's getting compensated very well. So, yes, that's just
- 44:17Speaker 3: what it is in a that's the case, that's what's
- 44:18Speaker 3: going to be, And I don't see it changing anytime soon.
- 44:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't.
- 44:22Speaker 4: I guess I don't see fans, you know, having to
- 44:25Speaker 4: go back and say, well, let's just say just these
- 44:28Speaker 4: couple of years, you know, again with Saudi money being involved,
- 44:31Speaker 4: and you know they're they've got a big well there,
- 44:34Speaker 4: people say, well, why the hell am I going to
- 44:35Speaker 4: start paying for pay per views in twenty twenty six,
- 44:37Speaker 4: twenty seven when we've had these kind of crazy years
- 44:40Speaker 4: of UFC on paramount kind of leaving that model.
- 44:43Speaker 3: So let me ask you, is there anybody below the
- 44:47Speaker 3: age of twenty five that's no matter the division. Is
- 44:52Speaker 3: there anyone you can forecast being a super duper star
- 44:55Speaker 3: to where it even makes sense even put them behind
- 44:58Speaker 3: the pay per view payball?
- 45:01Speaker 2: No? I mean, I like Xander's eyes a lot.
- 45:03Speaker 4: I think he's a very talented fighter, but he does
- 45:05Speaker 4: not have that kind of cachet.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Schakour is Yeah.
- 45:10Speaker 4: I mean he Shakour had his best performance just like
- 45:15Speaker 4: a month ago or whenever it was too right.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Oh yeah, he's you know.
- 45:19Speaker 4: If he does has a lot more amazing performances like
- 45:21Speaker 4: that going forward, maybe, but that's still a long ways
- 45:25Speaker 4: into his career, and you know, he's he's still a
- 45:27Speaker 4: very young guy. But no, man, I'm trying to think
- 45:29Speaker 4: of any anybody I've seen lately in the you know,
- 45:32Speaker 4: the not the three PM fights, but like six or seven.
- 45:36Speaker 3: If there's somebody young and somebody that we don't know
- 45:38Speaker 3: yet that's gonna be the future pay per view star, Yeah,
- 45:40Speaker 3: it'd be somebody that we haven't heard about yet or
- 45:42Speaker 3: that's not boxing.
- 45:44Speaker 2: It.
- 45:44Speaker 3: Like, there's no one that we know of at the
- 45:46Speaker 3: moment that's capable of putting it on not just one
- 45:49Speaker 3: pay per view, but every time they fight, they on
- 45:51Speaker 3: pay per view. There's no one yet. Now, the lie
- 45:54Speaker 3: I will say is that there is somebody. He probably
- 45:57Speaker 3: has to be Mexican or somewhere from a country that
- 46:02Speaker 3: really supports their fighters.
- 46:04Speaker 2: It will It can't be a regular American guy. That
- 46:07Speaker 2: won't work.
- 46:08Speaker 3: Has to be somewhere where there's a lot of different
- 46:11Speaker 3: people involved. But even then, I just don't see it
- 46:14Speaker 3: because the market, the way boxing is marketed now, it's
- 46:17Speaker 3: way different than what it was fifteen. You know what,
- 46:21Speaker 3: all perfect example, Canelo Alvarez was on Golden Boy, when
- 46:25Speaker 3: Floyd is on Golden Boy. When Floyd fought Canelo will
- 46:29Speaker 3: be on undercards. We don't have that no more. Like
- 46:33Speaker 3: those are things that growth sport, Like, Hey, this guy's
- 46:36Speaker 3: coming up next. You may want to pay attention to him.
- 46:39Speaker 3: He's coming, you may want to be on the lookout
- 46:42Speaker 3: for him. Those are the things get we we've went
- 46:45Speaker 3: away from. Those are things we've gone away from. So yeah,
- 46:48Speaker 3: I don't see anyone being a paper I just don't
- 46:51Speaker 3: see it.
- 46:53Speaker 2: That's very true. No, I agree.
- 46:55Speaker 4: I mean, I guess the industry is going to screwed
- 46:58Speaker 4: itself out of it for people.
- 46:59Speaker 2: It's kind of doesn't have it.
- 47:01Speaker 4: Doesn't have the infrastructure to continue expecting people to pay
- 47:05Speaker 4: pay per views, and it's been downhill in the last
- 47:07Speaker 4: few years.
- 47:09Speaker 2: You know. Furyousic was like a big, big deal. But
- 47:12Speaker 2: in the Zone.
- 47:13Speaker 4: Yeah, they did the thing where they said sign up
- 47:16Speaker 4: for the app, no paper view.
- 47:17Speaker 2: They lied, They went back on that and it started charging.
- 47:20Speaker 2: But I think they went back again.
- 47:21Speaker 4: I don't know if they're they're doing a pay per
- 47:23Speaker 4: view for anything, if you already sign up for the.
- 47:27Speaker 2: App, I don't know at the moment.
- 47:30Speaker 4: But yeah, but the biggest the only person I watched
- 47:33Speaker 4: on his zone really was Canelo.
- 47:34Speaker 2: And he's you know, I was.
- 47:36Speaker 4: Hanging out with Satis now so hard to say, man,
- 47:39Speaker 4: I mean, I uh, as long as I can still
- 47:43Speaker 4: find good fights at a bar that I can go
- 47:47Speaker 4: out and have a good time, you know, I'll show up.
- 47:50Speaker 4: You know, if it's like subscription only apps whatever, you know,
- 47:53Speaker 4: that's kind of my thing. Like I love boxing and
- 47:56Speaker 4: I love watching it at home as well, But what
- 47:58Speaker 4: I want most out of it is that a collective experience,
- 48:01Speaker 4: a communal experience of going out, even the hell, even
- 48:03Speaker 4: if I'm out of the bar talking to people at
- 48:06Speaker 4: the while having some drinks and they don't care about
- 48:08Speaker 4: boxing and I'm watching it, that's still cool. That's kind
- 48:10Speaker 4: of like my ideal boxing scenario. So obviously we lost
- 48:15Speaker 4: that with ESPN since top Rank left. So for me,
- 48:19Speaker 4: as long as I still can still get that experience,
- 48:22Speaker 4: I would be.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Happy, absolute absolute.
- 48:26Speaker 4: Oh right, let's move on to a recurring segment that
- 48:28Speaker 4: we call pop Pugilism, in which we discuss a feature film,
- 48:31Speaker 4: a TV show, or documentary about boxing. Today we're talking
- 48:34Speaker 4: about Southpaw from twenty fifteen, directed by Antoine Fuqua, starring
- 48:39Speaker 4: Jake Gillenhall, Forest Whitaker, and Rachel mcdadams.
- 48:41Speaker 2: For a little bit. I have to admit.
- 48:43Speaker 4: I totally got this movie confused with something else. I
- 48:46Speaker 4: thought it was based on a real guy, but it
- 48:48Speaker 4: is not. Yeah, it's a fictional character named Billy Hope,
- 48:52Speaker 4: who is the undisputed light heavyweight champion.
- 48:55Speaker 2: Movie starts off He's on top of the world. He's
- 48:57Speaker 2: got a lot of money, he's the champ. He's got
- 48:59Speaker 2: a family.
- 49:00Speaker 4: After a personal tragedy, he loses everything, his career, the money,
- 49:04Speaker 4: the house, the daughter. He has to claw himself back
- 49:08Speaker 4: to the top from nothing. Jamison thoughts on this flick,
- 49:12Speaker 4: what do you think it was.
- 49:13Speaker 3: A typical cookie cutter boxing slash combat boxing movie.
- 49:17Speaker 2: It was very cookie cutter.
- 49:20Speaker 3: It was I it was nothing special to me, Like
- 49:22Speaker 3: I wasn't like, oh my god, I gotta go do
- 49:25Speaker 3: rush and watch again, or I don't remember it really
- 49:28Speaker 3: coming out either, Like but hold on before I go
- 49:31Speaker 3: any further, what movie did you think this was?
- 49:34Speaker 2: I don't remember.
- 49:36Speaker 4: I want to say maybe maybe like Miles Teller had
- 49:41Speaker 4: a boxing movie where he played a real guy.
- 49:44Speaker 2: Actually, you know what, I might as well look it up.
- 49:46Speaker 2: I'm actually like, I don't have a computer in front. Yeah,
- 49:49Speaker 2: I'm curious what you thought it was. Because I'm watching
- 49:51Speaker 2: the movie.
- 49:51Speaker 3: I'm like, this isn't really what we would watch, Like,
- 49:55Speaker 3: this has nothing to do with anything that about well, you.
- 49:59Speaker 4: Know that's it's about boxing, you know.
- 50:02Speaker 2: Yeah, so like trying to be creative, like it's somewhat
- 50:05Speaker 2: rovant or anything. It's just like a boxing movie.
- 50:08Speaker 3: It's just a it's a cookie cutter Hollywood production of boxing.
- 50:13Speaker 3: What they think boxers go through, right, They start off good,
- 50:16Speaker 3: make a bunch of money, something crazy happens, they lose everything,
- 50:19Speaker 3: and then they're on the they're on the road back
- 50:22Speaker 3: to glory basically, and then that's kind of how it is.
- 50:27Speaker 3: But yeah, it wasn't, like I said, for me, it
- 50:29Speaker 3: was not special. It was just a regular movie. I
- 50:31Speaker 3: wasn't really moved by I stomach through the movie and
- 50:34Speaker 3: I moved all my life, but yeah, it was nothing
- 50:37Speaker 3: special to me.
- 50:38Speaker 4: Okay, figure it out. Uh, it's called Bleed for this.
- 50:41Speaker 4: It's a movie with Miles Teller from twenty sixteen, so
- 50:44Speaker 4: that was about you know, maybe that helped confuse me
- 50:47Speaker 4: because this was twenty fifteen, but he played a guy
- 50:49Speaker 4: named Vinnie Pezienza, so uh, that's what I thought this was.
- 50:54Speaker 2: And I was just like.
- 50:55Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, I've been meaning to you know, let's do
- 50:57Speaker 4: let's do another biopic and I just this one.
- 51:01Speaker 2: But yeah, I agree with you, very just middle of
- 51:05Speaker 2: the road.
- 51:07Speaker 4: The most interesting thing, and I say that I use
- 51:10Speaker 4: that word loosely, is that it was written by Kurt Sutter,
- 51:13Speaker 4: who is best known as creator of Sons of Anarchy,
- 51:16Speaker 4: and it was supposed to be written for eminem As
- 51:19Speaker 4: the starring role. Ah okay, it makes sense for a
- 51:24Speaker 4: movie like this, And if you've ever watched Sons of Anarchy,
- 51:26Speaker 4: it's like, Okay, there's one person on a letterbox in
- 51:29Speaker 4: the movie review. I have to call this white trash
- 51:31Speaker 4: rocky and that's the perfect encapsulation, right.
- 51:36Speaker 2: Kurt Sutters as a writer, he's very agro.
- 51:38Speaker 4: He has a lot of agro characters, bad tattoos, just people.
- 51:42Speaker 4: Just it's a groedy movie, a term that we used
- 51:45Speaker 4: to use back in the dates.
- 51:47Speaker 2: Jack jen Law.
- 51:47Speaker 4: Isn't just he's all bruised up and battered and he's
- 51:50Speaker 4: spitting blood.
- 51:51Speaker 2: And he's all sweaty. He looks disgusting in this movie sometimes.
- 51:54Speaker 4: Yeah, just gross and it just the movie just looks
- 51:59Speaker 4: as a grossesthetic.
- 52:01Speaker 2: Of course that's also you know, due to Anton Fuku
- 52:04Speaker 2: with the actual director.
- 52:06Speaker 4: But yeah, I mean it makes sense why this turns
- 52:09Speaker 4: out the way it did. It's very overly mellow, dramatic.
- 52:13Speaker 4: Oh Jake Jilldenhall. He does put in a good performance,
- 52:18Speaker 4: but it's also a lot of just.
- 52:20Speaker 2: Like a lot of yelling.
- 52:22Speaker 4: There's a lot of just like I said, very agro,
- 52:25Speaker 4: just big, big performance, and that's kind of like the
- 52:28Speaker 4: basic bitch approach of oh that's a really good actor.
- 52:31Speaker 2: Like well, he's also just being at like a hundred.
- 52:34Speaker 2: You know, every time, you know, like.
- 52:35Speaker 4: Really good performances, you're in a hundred, sometimes you're at
- 52:38Speaker 4: sixty thirty, seventy five. Right, He's just like up there
- 52:43Speaker 4: just throwing things, breaking stuff, you know, tossing crap and
- 52:46Speaker 4: throwing chairs.
- 52:47Speaker 2: And I didn't really like this character.
- 52:50Speaker 4: I don't have a problem with unlikable protagonists. I'm actually
- 52:55Speaker 4: I actually think we'd need more of them. And you know,
- 52:58Speaker 4: just guys can be scumback that's perfectly fine, but this
- 53:01Speaker 4: guy is just kind of a brick. I wasn't really
- 53:03Speaker 4: wanting to root for him. You know, he's he said,
- 53:07Speaker 4: he grew up in a foster home. He's an educated
- 53:10Speaker 4: you know, he's uh, just just you know, just kind
- 53:13Speaker 4: of a regular guy. And he's like yelling at a
- 53:17Speaker 4: at a judge because they took his kid away, and
- 53:19Speaker 4: he's like cursing in there, like you know what a
- 53:20Speaker 4: courthouse is, bro, especially if you said you've been in
- 53:23Speaker 4: jail before.
- 53:23Speaker 2: That's kind of stupid, right right.
- 53:26Speaker 4: The thing that bothered me the most is that he's
- 53:29Speaker 4: supposed to be this not very technically skilled fighter. He's
- 53:33Speaker 4: just a brawler, you know, he's that's his style, and
- 53:35Speaker 4: that's cool. And when he loses everything, he meets Forrest
- 53:39Speaker 4: Whitaker and gets retrained from scratch, literally showing him like,
- 53:43Speaker 4: here's how you slip and roll. Okay, supposedly he's the
- 53:46Speaker 4: light heavyweight champion of the world, undisputed. You do not
- 53:49Speaker 4: get there without knowing how to slip and roll punches.
- 53:51Speaker 4: Man or how to how to have defense, like yeah, yeah,
- 53:56Speaker 4: especially yeah yeah yeah.
- 54:00Speaker 3: Uh.
- 54:01Speaker 4: Deontay Wilder never been the best technical fighter, you know.
- 54:04Speaker 3: But that's different though, because he had things you couldn't teach.
- 54:08Speaker 3: He had power you can't teach so Ay the heavyweight,
- 54:11Speaker 3: so you can get away with being inexperience in that
- 54:15Speaker 3: division because of the things he had no one else had.
- 54:21Speaker 4: Sure, but that man still learned how to step and
- 54:23Speaker 4: slip punches like yeah right, yeah, yeah, yeah, Like he's
- 54:27Speaker 4: still he still had to come up with, you know,
- 54:29Speaker 4: the technical aspects and work the pads. Fine, then how
- 54:31Speaker 4: about this Tyson Fury. I've said it before.
- 54:34Speaker 2: You know, he doesn't have the technical aspects that people
- 54:37Speaker 2: think he does because he is a champion. He has
- 54:39Speaker 2: been a lot of dudes. He's a big brute.
- 54:41Speaker 4: He's tough, he's strong, and he it took a very
- 54:45Speaker 4: specific technical fighter to bring him down. But again, you
- 54:48Speaker 4: don't get to where he was without knowing just like, oh,
- 54:51Speaker 4: you use your shoulder to block the punches so they
- 54:54Speaker 4: don't hit you in the face. I'm like, bro, shut up,
- 54:56Speaker 4: that's so stupid right that that that really bothered me.
- 55:00Speaker 4: But yeah, I mean, what did you think of the
- 55:03Speaker 4: actual fights, I thought they were pretty They didn't look
- 55:05Speaker 4: too bad.
- 55:05Speaker 2: They were pretty.
- 55:06Speaker 3: Brutal in this movie for a movie, like for a movie,
- 55:09Speaker 3: it was best for a fiction for like a non
- 55:12Speaker 3: like biography or a non like storytelling movie.
- 55:16Speaker 2: It was cool, like it was better than average.
- 55:20Speaker 3: And you know what, boxing it's kind of hard to
- 55:22Speaker 3: when you actually have to script fuel the boxing movie.
- 55:25Speaker 3: You actually got to find people who actually bought. You
- 55:28Speaker 3: can't just get rid of people to act in boxing.
- 55:30Speaker 3: It don't work that way. Normally the boxing movie they
- 55:33Speaker 3: find guys who are lower in the ranks to do that.
- 55:35Speaker 3: Do those scenes that makes sense?
- 55:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I think the Hall looked pretty good.
- 55:40Speaker 4: It looks like he did train. I mean, he's jacked
- 55:42Speaker 4: the ship, so he looked like he put in.
- 55:43Speaker 2: A lot of work for the role.
- 55:44Speaker 4: But he still looked good in the in the fight scenes,
- 55:47Speaker 4: like you could tell that he took it seriously. And
- 55:51Speaker 4: I've seen we have seen way worse looking actual matches
- 55:55Speaker 4: in movies than this.
- 55:57Speaker 2: So yeah, but yeah, I mean.
- 56:01Speaker 4: Very cliche. It also, like you said, didn't move me either.
- 56:07Speaker 4: Terrible soundtrack. Eminem actually produced the soundtrack. He has one
- 56:12Speaker 4: song during a training montage that is absolute garbage, even
- 56:15Speaker 4: for his standards. It started off with like, actually, this
- 56:21Speaker 4: is when I realized I made a mistake at the beginning,
- 56:23Speaker 4: because there were so many red flags. First of all,
- 56:24Speaker 4: the first thing you see is Weinstein Company. I'm like,
- 56:26Speaker 4: oh boy, of course you know that that was back then.
- 56:29Speaker 4: You know, a lot of stuff didn't come out back then.
- 56:32Speaker 2: Then.
- 56:32Speaker 4: It was the old English font that just looked like
- 56:35Speaker 4: really bad tattoos that I was like, oh no, this
- 56:38Speaker 4: aesthetic is happening. And then the next thing you see
- 56:40Speaker 4: is Curtis fifty sent Jackson, which you.
- 56:43Speaker 2: Know, speaking of power, you know my man, I've never
- 56:45Speaker 2: seen Power, but my man is not a great actor.
- 56:48Speaker 3: He is so Power is actually good. The original Power
- 56:52Speaker 3: series is fine. Some of the spin offs are cool,
- 56:55Speaker 3: but Power.
- 56:56Speaker 2: It'll get you.
- 56:57Speaker 3: It's worth watching if you have time and you're trying
- 57:00Speaker 3: to kill time. It's worth watching.
- 57:03Speaker 4: Okay, okay, I'm always looking for new recommendations of good stuff,
- 57:07Speaker 4: quality stuff. But but yeah, in this movie list, at
- 57:10Speaker 4: least fifty cents looked lost to see. Just don't know
- 57:13Speaker 4: why he was even there. Maybe but he had eminem
- 57:17Speaker 4: were friends, right, were they?
- 57:18Speaker 2: Like in the.
- 57:21Speaker 3: He credits him and them forgetting them where he's at life,
- 57:23Speaker 3: so that will always be a thing. But also remember
- 57:26Speaker 3: Fifty was also involved in boxing as well for a
- 57:29Speaker 3: short amount of time.
- 57:30Speaker 2: Did I know that?
- 57:33Speaker 3: So when he was hanging out with Floyd Very Tough,
- 57:35Speaker 3: they had a falling out and Fifty got to the
- 57:38Speaker 3: boxing game.
- 57:39Speaker 2: He was I'm not mistaken. He was promoting.
- 57:43Speaker 3: Gamboa okay at a time, he was promoting in behind
- 57:50Speaker 3: a couple of his fights.
- 57:51Speaker 2: I'm not mistaken. Yeah, okay, interesting, No, I know, I
- 57:57Speaker 2: don't know.
- 57:57Speaker 4: Wait a second, is that what the clip was the
- 58:00Speaker 4: meme where he says, why do you say fuck me for?
- 58:02Speaker 2: He was talking about Yeah, yeah, yep, yep, that's right.
- 58:08Speaker 4: I completely So I didn't know that Fifty was actually
- 58:11Speaker 4: in boxing, but I do know that.
- 58:15Speaker 3: So when Floyd went to jail, there was some dealings
- 58:19Speaker 3: that Fifty thought he can do. There was some stuff
- 58:22Speaker 3: behind the scenes where he thought he could take over
- 58:25Speaker 3: the business side because that's where the money was coming
- 58:27Speaker 3: in from. And that didn't happen because what's my guy's
- 58:31Speaker 3: name was, Leonard? Leonard Lerbie was like, nah, it's not
- 58:36Speaker 3: how things were done. Fifty thought he could do something similar,
- 58:41Speaker 3: and he had like Gambole and I think somebody else,
- 58:43Speaker 3: but I remember Gambole was the biggest name that he
- 58:46Speaker 3: had and it didn't work out.
- 58:48Speaker 2: Well okay, okay.
- 58:49Speaker 4: Well not only with boxing, and if he's buddy with
- 58:52Speaker 4: eminem he might have signed on when that was the
- 58:53Speaker 4: plan for this movie.
- 58:54Speaker 2: So he's not in a lot.
- 58:56Speaker 4: But yeah, I mean I I isn't very impressed with this.
- 59:02Speaker 4: I like there are things in it that I liked.
- 59:06Speaker 4: Using southpaus the title is kind of dumb for one reason.
- 59:10Speaker 4: If anybody doesn't know, if you're a left handed boxer,
- 59:12Speaker 4: you called the southpaw because that's a particular stance. If
- 59:14Speaker 4: you're a right handed you're called orthodox dance. And he
- 59:17Speaker 4: learns how to throw one or two punches in south
- 59:20Speaker 4: past dance and that's how he wins the fight. And
- 59:22Speaker 4: that's it, Like that's why they named it, which is ridiculous.
- 59:27Speaker 4: Plus just using like something so common in boxing. Again,
- 59:33Speaker 4: very basic bitch of it is Like as the title,
- 59:35Speaker 4: I was like, I don't know, it's like making an
- 59:36Speaker 4: NFL movie and calling it Jersey, not like New Jersey,
- 59:39Speaker 4: like like like a Jersey where like calling it helmet.
- 59:42Speaker 2: I'm like, I don't know, that's just whoever's left headed
- 59:44Speaker 2: they call it. Felt like they didn't have a title
- 59:48Speaker 2: until way later in the film. That's a good point.
- 59:51Speaker 2: That's a really good point.
- 59:52Speaker 4: Yeah, and they were probably calling it, you know, Badass
- 59:56Speaker 4: Boxer goes Hard bro just titled.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: It was untitled until they got to a certain point
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: in the film. Jake Jillenhall Boxing movie.
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, uh, sorry Jameson, sorry for picking this
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: one and thinking it was something else.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: But oh it's too long too, it's over two hours.
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: It didn't that's sorry. You cannot get that shit back,
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: And I'm sorry. I will said I I no matter what,
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: I love watching movies for the show and talking about them.
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: But when it was like, you know, still like fifty
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: minutes left, i paused to take a break out of
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: the bathroom, I'm like, ah, shit, fifty minutes.
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: So yeah, that was not the worst movie I've ever seen.
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: Not the worst boxing movie I've ever seen. Definitely has
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: a it's it has a particular style. If you like that,
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: that's cool, It's just not my thing. Also, let's be real.
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: My man directed The Trading Day, great movie. His career
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: has not been good since then, Like he did Shootout
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: with Marky Mark, the Equalizer, Trilogyesus, Snooze Fest. Is there
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: anything that he did that's like really, you know, people
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: remember as exciting and good quality.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: Off top. I don't have a list in front of me.
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: I would need to see a list.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: I mean he Uh, he's a solid director. Don't get
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: me wrong. I'm not talking shit about him. It's just
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: I don't know his career just s had them that good.
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: Oh I saw the Magnificent seven remake that he did
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: pretty boring. Uh that Gerard Butler as a Secret Service
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: Olympus has fallen movie a Gerard butterle of doing an
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: American accent badly.
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: Uh?
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: Yeah, just nothing really the kind of lights, the room
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: up or anything. Training Day was the best of the Uh.
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: The best thing is filmography and never gonna.
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: It's gonna be hard for any day, very very hard.
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: I'm better even saying I'll do it. I'm just saying
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: make something else that's like, yeah, yeah, apologies Jameson, but
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: if you learn to rate this movie out of four gloves,
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: what would you give it?
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: I can say two, and I'm being very nice. I'm
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: being like very very nice. I could go one seven five,
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: but I'm gonna go two. Just because it was a
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: halfway decent Hollywood production.
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: I'm gonna say two, and I'm being very nice when
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: I say two. Same. I like the cast. I like
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: Jiln Hall Forest, but is always good.
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: I've always liked Rachel mccadams and things, even if she's
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: not in it for very long, and she's doing the
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: New York accent there, so that's kind of funny and
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: we're gonna do with that. I like that Rachel mccadams
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: is an American actress doing that accident, and you don't
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: get a Britishers. They usually just have a British to
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: fake New York but or fake Boston or whatever. So yeah,
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: I would say being generous, and you know, we're trying
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: to end this off on a positive note.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: I started off super angry.
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: Also, we got something exciting coming up to talk about
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: in the next episode. So let's let's say two Gloves
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: and you know, just say next Anton Fuqua movie, maybe
- 1:02:56Speaker 4: we skip it, you please, right time?
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. Here's the thing.
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: Okay, even if we got the right movie, there's only
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: so many Bucks movies.
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: I would have picked this one eventually.
- 1:03:08Speaker 5: Anyway, it's slim pickings out there for real, Like we
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: might be better offstead of talking about movies, like going
- 1:03:17Speaker 5: back and watching an older fight and hey, do you
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: remember this?
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: Do you remember?
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: And I'm not saying go back to the sixties, because
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: that's not sure, that'st thing necessary. But we can go
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: back over the last twenty five years and talk about
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: a fight. If we're gonna run short on movies eventually,
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: why that's just how it goes. But there are certain
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: fights where it kind of changes things or something happened
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: in that fight, and we can talk about that because
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: that's something that's relative to what we do.
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: I like that. I like that a lot. Plus everything's
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: on YouTube.
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: Plus there's some fights that you know, classically are cemented
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: in pop culture. It's still pop pugilism. So yeah, yeah,
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: let's uh, you know, we like to keep the show fresh, evolving.
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: Speaking of which, before we wrap up, I just want
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: to give y'all a quick little preview of what's coming
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: up next. We only have one more show until the
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: Canelo Crawford fight on September thirteenth, So Thursday, September eleventh,
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: the Mixed Company Podcast will be celebrating with an extravaganza
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: that's going to be all about Canelo Albarez versus Bud Crawford.
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: We have been talking about this fight potentially being made
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: literally since our pilot episode, so the arc of this
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: entire show has been tracking this fight.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: So I'm stoked.

- 1:04:52Speaker 3: leave it at that.
