- 0:00Speaker 1: Time now for back to the basics in healthcare with
- 0:01Speaker 1: Balanced Life Chiropractic, and we have doctor Harley joining us.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Hello, doctor Harley. We're getting closer and closer to summer.
- 0:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean every week is one week closer, right.
- 0:10Speaker 2: And we're burning through the month of May.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Next thing, you know, it's going to be June, and
- 0:13Speaker 1: it needs to be July and a lot of people
- 0:15Speaker 1: out and about doing you know, fun activities outside, some
- 0:19Speaker 1: people doing you know, the honeydew list that we talked
- 0:21Speaker 1: about last week, where you know, now that it's nice out,
- 0:23Speaker 1: we're out doing these. But before you do this, you
- 0:26Speaker 1: should probably stretch and then you should stay hydrated.
- 0:28Speaker 2: You know how I know that because we've talked about that,
- 0:31Speaker 2: Yes we have. We've talked about that in the past.
- 0:33Speaker 1: But I think it's a great thing to remind people
- 0:35Speaker 1: because I personally was out this weekend and I should
- 0:38Speaker 1: have probably been a little more hydrated.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Right, you know. So we might talk about some of
- 0:41Speaker 3: the similar things over the months and weeks, but it's
- 0:44Speaker 3: always important to remind people. Sometimes it takes like three
- 0:47Speaker 3: times hearing something for it to finally clicks.
- 0:50Speaker 1: It's almost like this is back to the basics in healthcare.
- 0:53Speaker 2: That's these are the basics. It's important stuff, right.
- 0:55Speaker 3: And really the simplest thing we can do for our
- 0:58Speaker 3: health is make sure we're saying well hydrated.
- 1:00Speaker 2: And why is that? Why does water matter so much?
- 1:02Speaker 1: Because this water not Hey, I was drinking beer all weekend,
- 1:05Speaker 1: I should be fine.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Well, we are made up of at least like seventy
- 1:08Speaker 3: some percent water in our bodies, So it's important to
- 1:12Speaker 3: make sure that we keep that proper hydration because that's
- 1:16Speaker 3: going to help keep our tissues hydrated. It's going to
- 1:18Speaker 3: help flush all the toxins and crap out of our
- 1:21Speaker 3: body that is like sell your byproduct build up. Or
- 1:24Speaker 3: when we're moving our muscles like they get kind of
- 1:27Speaker 3: micro tears. We want to flush all that out and
- 1:30Speaker 3: other liquids don't really do that.
- 1:33Speaker 1: And so there are some people that go, oh, when
- 1:35Speaker 1: I do this, I have Gatorade or power aid or
- 1:37Speaker 1: one of those aids. Is that better than water or
- 1:40Speaker 1: does that replace water? Or is that not really the
- 1:42Speaker 1: same thing.
- 1:42Speaker 3: If you are sweating a lot, like say you're outside
- 1:45Speaker 3: and you are just dripping sweat, or if you're exercising
- 1:49Speaker 3: really hard or sports or something anytime you're sweating a lot,
- 1:53Speaker 3: it's important to drink stuff like that because it's going
- 1:55Speaker 3: to help replace the electrodes that you're losing in sweat
- 1:58Speaker 3: where water is still good, but it does help with
- 2:01Speaker 3: hydrating you faster.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Obviously.
- 2:03Speaker 3: I don't think you should just be drinking electrolyte drinks
- 2:06Speaker 3: when you're sitting at home watching TV necessarily.
- 2:08Speaker 2: But I sweat a lot while watching TV. So it's
- 2:12Speaker 2: like that guy on TV looks like he's working hard.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Just the thought makes you It kind of does some time.
- 2:17Speaker 1: I'm only halfway kidding there, but no that So if
- 2:19Speaker 1: you're gonna be doing a bunch of physical things, or
- 2:21Speaker 1: if you're gonna maybe run a marathon or practice, you know,
- 2:24Speaker 1: do a game, because I know a lot of the
- 2:25Speaker 1: time that's kind of tied with sports, right.
- 2:27Speaker 3: You know, that's why sports drinks are kind of what
- 2:29Speaker 3: they're called, because you're losing a lot of like because
- 2:32Speaker 3: it's like salt and sodium or the electrolytes that are
- 2:34Speaker 3: really important that we lose a lot of those in
- 2:37Speaker 3: the sweating. So by putting them back into our body,
- 2:40Speaker 3: it's gonna help our body to use that water better.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Because areas of high concentration of like that salt and
- 2:46Speaker 3: potassium go to areas of lower and with like water osmosis.
- 2:50Speaker 3: You know, you can go into a lot of technical
- 2:52Speaker 3: but it helps just hydrate us faster and keep you
- 2:56Speaker 3: from getting dehydrated, especially when it's getting hotter and hotter outside.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Rating is part of it.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And then the stretching. Why is stretching important? What is
- 3:02Speaker 1: that going to do to help me not necessarily get hurt?
- 3:05Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I think if you think of like
- 3:06Speaker 3: a rubber band, if you just stretch it really quickly,
- 3:09Speaker 3: it's probably gonna break. But if you like slowly gradually
- 3:12Speaker 3: stretch it kind of get that rubber you know, warmed up,
- 3:15Speaker 3: it's gonna last a little bit. Our muscles are kind
- 3:17Speaker 3: of the same way. They need to get warmed up
- 3:18Speaker 3: before we do a lot of extra activity or you
- 3:20Speaker 3: could potentially pull a muscle or worst case in air,
- 3:24Speaker 3: tear a muscle because the muscles weren't ready for that
- 3:27Speaker 3: much activity.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Be it.
- 3:28Speaker 3: You know, if you're slow running or if you're sprinting
- 3:30Speaker 3: or lifting heavyweights, they still have to get prepped and
- 3:33Speaker 3: ready to do that kind of exercise.
- 3:35Speaker 1: And I pulled a muscle once watching television as well,
- 3:37Speaker 1: so reaching for.
- 3:39Speaker 2: The remote, Oh, you probably move too fast.
- 3:41Speaker 1: It's exactly if somebody listening is going, Okay, I've got
- 3:44Speaker 1: stuff I'm planning I'm doing outside this summer. As we're
- 3:47Speaker 1: getting closer and closer to that, what is the best
- 3:49Speaker 1: way for them to connect with you at Balanced Life
- 3:50Speaker 1: Chiropractic to make sure that they're ready to roll.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Right. If you've got some big projects or sports that
- 3:55Speaker 3: you're going to be doing, it's always good to see
- 3:56Speaker 3: a chiropractor with that kind of stuff because we can
- 3:58Speaker 3: help make sure that your body is in tip top
- 4:00Speaker 3: shape and ready to do those types of exercises, so
- 4:03Speaker 3: then you're not calling in after the fact, like I
- 4:06Speaker 3: really messed up my back.
- 4:07Speaker 2: I'm really hurt.
- 4:08Speaker 1: You know.
