Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The feast of Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist, September 21 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of today's feast, Monsignor William R Kelly writes, Saint Matthew was a Galilean by birth. In the gospel, he humbly relates the story of his own conversion. To the glory of an apostle, he adds that of an evangelist.

He wrote his gospel in Aramaic, and it was afterwards translated into Greek. The Aramaic text has perished. This gospel is a divinely inspired work included in sacred scripture. He gives the line of ancestors from whom Jesus descended as a man and on this account is represented by the animal with a human face in the symbolic vision of Ezekiel. Little is known of his life.
• 1:14
The fathers in general say that he died in Persia. Saint Paulinus of Nola asserts that he died amongst the Parthians. When his remains were discovered at Villa and brought to the Cathedral Of Salerno, Pope Gregory the seventh began his journey there but died on the way and was buried near the tomb of Saint Matthew. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen.

The introit. Right reason is on the good man's lips. Well weighted are all his counsels. The law of God rules in his heart. Allay thy impatience with the wicked.
• 2:10
Envy not the lot of evildoers. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Right reason is on the good man's lips. Well weighted are all his counsels.
• 2:35
The law of God rules in his heart. The Collect. Let us pray. May we be helped, o Lord, by the prayers of the blessed Apostle and Evangelist, Matthew, that what we cannot obtain by our own efforts may be given to us by his intercession through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.

A lesson from the prophet Ezekiel. Each of them had four faces representing four living creatures. Each had the face of a man, yet each of the four looked like a lion when seen from the right, like an ox when seen from the left, like an eagle when seen from above. So much for their faces. Each had his wings spread out above him.
• 3:45
Those two which met his neighbor's wings. With the other two, he veiled his body. Each of them marched straight forward following the movement of that divine breath, never swerving as he marched. And there was this too about the appearance of these living figures. There was a look about them that reminded me of flaming coals or of torches.
• 4:14
That was what I saw going to and fro in the midst of the living figures. A glow as of fire. And from this glow lightning came out. So the living figures came and went vivid as lightning flashes. The gradual.
• 4:39
A blessed man is he who fears the Lord bearing all love to his commandments. Children of his shall win renown in their country. The sons of the upright shall find a blessing. Alleluia. Alleluia.
• 4:59
The glorious company of the Apostles, Lord, give praise to thee. Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. At that time Jesus saw a man called Matthew sitting at work in the customs house and said to him, follow me. And Matthew rose from his place and followed him.
• 5:30
And afterwards when he was taking a meal in the house many publicans and sinners were to be found at table with him and his disciples. The Pharisees saw this and asked his disciples, how comes it that your master eats with publicans and sinners? Jesus heard it and said, It is not those who are in health that have need of the physician. It is those who are sick. Go home and find out what the words mean.
• 6:06
It is mercy that wins favor with me, not sacrifice. I have come to call sinners, not the just. The offertory. Thou has set a jeweled crown, o Lord, upon his head. He prayed for life, and thou hast granted it to him.
• 6:31
Alleluia. The secret. May the offering of thy church we beseech thee, O Lord, be commended to thee by the prayers of the blessed apostle and evangelist, Matthew, by whose glorious preaching she has instructed through our lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The Preface of Apostles Just it is indeed and fitting right in for our salvation to entreat thee humbly, oh, Lord, that thou wouldst not desert thy flock, oh, everlasting shepherd, but through thy blessed apostles, which keep it under thy constant protection that it may be governed by those same rulers whom as vicars of thy work thou did set over it to be its pastors.
• 7:41
And therefore, with angels and archangels, with thrones and dominions, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of thy glory saying without ceasing. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
• 8:14
Hosanna in the highest. The communion. How great is the renowned that thy protection has won for him. Glory and high honor, Lord, thou hast made his. The post communion.
• 8:38
Let us pray. We who have received the sacraments entreat thee, O Lord, by the intercession of blessed Matthew, thine Apostle and Evangelist, that what we have celebrated for his glory may profit us unto healing through our Lord Jesus Christ thy son who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen.
