- 0:13If you feel like every online job application you send in just vanishes into a black
- 0:19hole...
- 0:20you're, you're actually not crazy.
- 0:23But here is the thing that surprised me.
- 0:25According to data from the payroll platform Gusto, Oklahoma City just ranked third
- 0:31in the entire nation for small and medium business job growth,
- 0:35with a zero point seven percent jump in hiring in a single month.
- 0:41Wait, wait, third in the country?
- 0:44Because if you talk to anybody scrolling through job boards right now,
- 0:47they'll tell you it feels like, like absolute crickets out there.
- 0:52Right!
- 0:53Exactly.
- 0:54But Gusto's New Hires Pay Index shows starting pay for new hires actually went up
- 1:01one point two percent at the exact same time.
- 1:04The jobs are there, Miles, but companies are shifting where they look.
- 1:10They are completely bypassing those massive online job boards.
- 1:15So if they aren't posting them online where everyone is looking...
- 1:20where are they actually hiring people?
- 1:23They are doing direct hiring in person.
- 1:26Specifically, through local state agencies like the Oklahoma Employment Security
- 1:31Commission down on Lincoln Boulevard.
- 1:34OESC hosts direct hiring events where employers show up ready to interview and hire
- 1:40on the spot.
- 1:42Wait, so you mean like, like walking into a room, talking to a real human being,
- 1:47and getting an offer right then?
- 1:49What kind of pay are we talking about for those?
- 1:52Entry level logistics, public works, city service roles...
- 1:56starting right between seventeen dollars and fifty cents to nineteen dollars an
- 2:00hour.
- 2:01And a lot of these don't require tech backgrounds or years of corporate experience.
- 2:07Man, back when I was doing morning radio, I cannot tell you how many listeners would
- 2:12call in during the five a m hour, absolutely exhausted.
- 2:17They were working fifty hours a week in food service making,
- 2:20like, fourteen bucks an hour.
- 2:22And the wild part was, ten minutes down the road, there were warehouse shifts
- 2:27starting at eighteen fifty an hour with health benefits on day one.
- 2:31It's a huge gap.
- 2:33Going from fourteen dollars to nineteen dollars an hour isn't just a slight bump.
- 2:39On a standard forty hour week, that is over eight hundred dollars more every single
- 2:44month in actual cash flow.
- 2:47That is...
- 2:50I mean, that's rent stability right there.
- 2:53That's taking your breath for a second instead of deciding which bill gets paid late
- 2:58this month.
- 3:00And it doesn't stop at nineteen an hour.
- 3:03There is a very clear ladder from that entry level floor up to twenty five dollars
- 3:08an hour, and it doesn't require taking on tens of thousands in student debt either.
- 3:13Okay, hold on.
- 3:15Twenty five dollars an hour without debt?
- 3:19What's the catch?
- 3:20Is this like a three year apprenticeship program or something?
- 3:24Try six to twelve weeks.
- 3:27Metro Tech at their Springlake Campus on Springlake Drive has partnered with the
- 3:31Central Oklahoma Workforce Innovation Board, or COWIB.
- 3:35They run short term career training in commercial driving, healthcare support,
- 3:39and logistics technology.
- 3:42Six to twelve weeks...
- 3:44wait, but what does the tuition cost for something like that?
- 3:47For qualifying adult learners in Oklahoma City, COWIB actually covers one hundred
- 3:54percent of the tuition through funded workforce vouchers.
- 3:57You train for a couple months, get the credential, and walk straight into local
- 4:01employers who are actively looking for those specific skill sets.
- 4:05See, that is what people actually need.
- 4:08But, okay, let's talk about what happens when you get that raise.
- 4:12Because when you jump from fifteen an hour to twenty four fifty an hour,
- 4:17if you aren't careful, inflation and sudden expenses can eat that whole raise up
- 4:22before you even see it in your account.
- 4:25That is a really fair point.
- 4:27Making more money is only half the equation.
- 4:30Keeping it and stabilizing your household is the other half.
- 4:34Yeah, exactly.
- 4:36That's where groups like the Community Action Agency of Oklahoma City come in.
- 4:40They offer utility assistance and completely free financial coaching.
- 4:45So when that bigger check starts hitting, you can smooth out seasonal electric bill
- 4:50spikes and actually put money away into emergency savings instead of just watching
- 4:55it disappear.
- 4:56It makes a massive difference.
- 4:58I was looking at a case study from a local renter here in OKC.
- 5:02She spent two years stuck in a fifteen dollar an hour retail spot,
- 5:07constantly stressed.
- 5:08She went to one OESC event, connected with a COWIB representative,
- 5:13enrolled at Metro Tech, and within eight weeks she was working in healthcare
- 5:17logistics making twenty four dollars and fifty cents an hour.
- 5:22Man, eight weeks to totally transform your monthly budget.
- 5:26That is incredible.
- 5:28It really is.
- 5:30So if you are listening to this right now and feeling stuck,
- 5:34don't just keep sending resumes into the online void.
- 5:37Check the weekly OESC hiring calendar on their website, and look up the COWIB
- 5:43training grant application before five p m today.
- 5:46Take the step.
- 5:48Alright, good chatting today, talk soon!
