2:29
Speaker 1: people that are out there that need to hear the
2:31
Speaker 1: show that are, victims and this is one of those
2:34
Speaker 1: important shows where you don't know whose life you're gonna
2:37
Speaker 1: be able to help and affect in a positive, way
2:39
Speaker 1: whose life literally could be saved because of this show
2:44
Speaker 1: and the information that they're going to. Hear and this
2:47
Speaker 1: legislation center that you introduced today In, washington D. C is.
2:51
Speaker 1: Incredible and your guest who's with you IN dc as,
2:54
Speaker 1: well it's amazing the story that she is, telling but
2:59
Speaker 1: also just how powerful it is to stand up for
3:03
Speaker 1: so many others that need.
3:03
Speaker 2: Help, well that's.
3:05
Speaker 3: Right this WEEK i introduced legislation in The senate Called Trey's,
3:08
Speaker 3: law and it is designed to protect, kids kids who
3:13
Speaker 3: tragically are the victims of sexual. Assault And Trey's law
3:18
Speaker 3: prohibits non disclosure agreements binding children who have been victims
3:23
Speaker 3: of sexual. Assault and this is a problem we are seeing,
3:28
Speaker 3: nationwide a staggering. STATISTIC a child In america is sexually
3:34
Speaker 3: abused every nine. Minutes, yeah one in four girls In
3:40
Speaker 3: america will be sexually abused before she turns. Eighteen one
3:46
Speaker 3: in six boys In america will be sexually abused before
3:49
Speaker 3: he turns. Eighteen and we have been seeing over and
3:55
Speaker 3: over again when they're violators are held, accountable when they're,
4:02
Speaker 3: prosecuted and when there is civil litigation that it is
4:06
Speaker 3: becoming a routine for the violators to insist upon a
4:10
Speaker 3: non disclosure, agreement a non disclosure agreement that binds the
4:15
Speaker 3: children and forces them to be. Silent And Trey's law
4:20
Speaker 3: is named for A, Texan Trey, carlock who horrifically was
4:25
Speaker 3: abused at a summer camp In, missouri abused over a
4:29
Speaker 3: number of, years and his abuser was prosecuted as at
4:34
Speaker 3: abuser is serving three consecutive life terms in. Prison and
4:40
Speaker 3: in the course of civil, Litigation trey was convinced to
4:45
Speaker 3: sign a non disclosure agreement and that secret haunted him
4:54
Speaker 3: so much so that at twenty eight years, old he
4:57
Speaker 3: took his own. Life and that is a tragedy in
5:05
Speaker 3: his life and his family's, life but it's a tragedy.
5:07
Speaker 3: Nationally and we have a guest on the podcast tonight
5:13
Speaker 3: who's another text In Elizabeth. Phillips elizabeth Is trey's, sister
5:18
Speaker 3: and she has taken the grief and agony of losing
5:23
Speaker 3: her brother and of knowing what happened to. Him losing her.
5:28
Speaker 3: Brother it's one thing to lose a sibling in a car,
5:31
Speaker 3: accident my sister died of a drug. Overdose it is
5:38
Speaker 3: always difficult to lose a family member that you, love
5:43
Speaker 3: but it is particularly gut, wrenching, yeah to lose a
5:51
Speaker 3: family member who you know was the victim of abuse
5:55
Speaker 3: and was haunted by. That AND i will tell, You,
5:58
Speaker 3: elizabeth she lives In dallas and she has devoted thousands
6:04
Speaker 3: of hours to fighting for trades. Law Tray's law has
6:07
Speaker 3: been adopted number of, states Including. Texas texas has adopted
6:11
Speaker 3: Trades law and at the state.
6:13
Speaker 2: Level but, today with a group of.
6:18
Speaker 3: Seven bipartisan co, Sponsors i've introduced at the federal level
6:24
Speaker 3: and we're going to get passed at the federal.
6:25
Speaker 2: Level BUT i want to Start. Elizabeth we welcome To.
6:27
Speaker 2: Verdic we're glad to have.
6:28
Speaker 5: You thank you so much for not just the introduction
6:32
Speaker 5: of Trades law TO Us congress this, morning but for
6:34
Speaker 5: offering this platform as. Well AND i, AGREE i hope
6:38
Speaker 5: it goes. Viral every parent needs to understand how this system,
6:41
Speaker 5: works BECAUSE i think there are a lot of assumptions
6:44
Speaker 5: that if your child is sexually, abused whether it be
6:47
Speaker 5: at a summer camp which was Trade, story or a
6:49
Speaker 5: school or a faith based setting or sports, setting they're
6:53
Speaker 5: going to come forward, immediately but there's something called delayed.
6:55
Speaker 5: Disclosure children that are victimized in this way don't come
6:59
Speaker 5: forward oftentimes for, decades if ever at, all and we
7:03
Speaker 5: need to be sure that we are protecting children and
7:06
Speaker 5: their voices so that when they do come, forward survivors are, heard,
7:10
Speaker 5: believed and that we can respond with action to hold
7:13
Speaker 5: the bad actors. Accountable, yeah so thank you for the. Conversation,
7:16
Speaker 5: well thank you for being. Here let me ask, you
7:19
Speaker 5: could you just tell your brother's, story to just just
7:22
Speaker 5: share with our listeners and, viewers tell folks who your
7:26
Speaker 5: brother was and what happened to. Him, yeah and thank
7:29
Speaker 5: you for going into some of that in your, introduction
7:31
Speaker 5: because it's honestly the hardest part for me to talk.
7:34
Speaker 5: ABOUT i can go over to stats and data about
7:37
Speaker 5: child sexual abuse and ways to prevent it all day,
7:40
Speaker 5: long but it's really hard for me to talk About.
7:44
Speaker 5: Trey AND i didn't know that you also lost a,
7:46
Speaker 5: Sibling So i'm sorry for your loss And i'm sorry
7:49
Speaker 5: we can relate on.
7:50
Speaker 3: That that's not not a club anyone wants.
7:53
Speaker 2: To be a member.
7:54
Speaker 5: Exactly BUT i think also we understand that you can
8:00
Speaker 5: can grieve it and move, on or you can grieve
8:05
Speaker 5: it and turn that pain into. Purpose AND i think
8:08
Speaker 5: what we saw at the press conference this morning was
8:10
Speaker 5: pain turned into. Power when there was a nineteen year
8:13
Speaker 5: old young woman who came, forward it named her abuser
8:15
Speaker 5: for the first time because her voice was protected Under
8:17
Speaker 5: Trey's law since that was passed and put into effect
8:20
Speaker 5: In missouri Last.
8:21
Speaker 6: August and so that's what we're wanting to expand.
8:24
Speaker 5: Nationally this journey for me began because my brother died
8:27
Speaker 5: by suicide when he was twenty, eight not only due
8:31
Speaker 5: to the child sexual abuse on what we now believe
8:34
Speaker 5: to be trafficking at the hand Of cannicut camps based
8:36
Speaker 5: in Southwest. Missouri they had international mission. Trips they were
8:39
Speaker 5: moving kids across state. Lines it was never fully. Investigated
8:44
Speaker 5: the criminal case landed In Taney, County, missouri in The sheriff's,
8:47
Speaker 5: department and at the time of my brother's perpetrator, sentencing
8:51
Speaker 5: there were fifty seven known. Victims but we now have
8:56
Speaker 5: had many victims come forward SINCE i started a website
8:59
Speaker 5: Called facts Of kinnocut dot com with other survivor families
9:02
Speaker 5: to get the facts out there to parents and warn
9:05
Speaker 5: the public that this is much more widespread than what
9:08
Speaker 5: had been reported upon massive cover up which is not
9:12
Speaker 5: unusual in a lot of these situations because OF. NDAs
9:15
Speaker 5: so that's what we're addressing With Trey's law that's now
9:18
Speaker 5: been introduced To, congress very. Bipartisan you, said you, know
9:22
Speaker 5: no one you've brought this to has said no to.
9:24
Speaker 5: IT i mean it's something everyone should get behind and
9:27
Speaker 5: hopefully can get. Behind you, know In trey's, story he
9:31
Speaker 5: was groomed and then abused by a camp. Director so
9:34
Speaker 5: seven to seventeen this was going.
9:36
Speaker 2: On and so he was seven when he started going
9:38
Speaker 2: to the, camp when he.
9:39
Speaker 5: Started going to the, camp and that's when the grooming
9:42
Speaker 5: began and then the sexual abuse. Began and then his,
9:47
Speaker 5: perpetrator who like you, said is now in prison for
9:50
Speaker 5: three life, terms confessed to his crimes and was sentenced
9:53
Speaker 5: in twenty, ten but under the civil statute limitations In,
9:57
Speaker 5: Texas trade was forced to file his civil lawsuit by
9:59
Speaker 5: the twenty Three and just, imagine you, know go back
10:03
Speaker 5: to when you were twenty, three were you ready to
10:05
Speaker 5: go up against a system and quote unquote ministry Like
10:10
Speaker 5: cannoncock that has between thirty five and forty five million
10:12
Speaker 5: in annual. REVENUE i, mean at twenty, three you're still a.
10:16
Speaker 5: Kid we call them college, kids, Right you're just trying
10:17
Speaker 5: to get through college and start a, job build a.
10:20
Speaker 5: Life and if someone puts a settlement agreement in front
10:23
Speaker 5: of you and says sign on the dotted line and
10:26
Speaker 5: this can all go, away and you can have restitution
10:29
Speaker 5: and some you, know some money for your, healing for
10:34
Speaker 5: therapy or before lost, income you're.
10:37
Speaker 6: Probably going to do.
10:38
Speaker 4: It and for closure.
10:40
Speaker 6: And for healing, enclosure thank.
10:42
Speaker 1: You AND i say that BECAUSE i have friends that
10:46
Speaker 1: worked At cannicock during the time period you're talking. ABOUT
10:48
Speaker 1: i also know people that were abused At cannacock and
10:54
Speaker 1: this story WHEN i saw we were doing, it and
10:55
Speaker 1: it's It's i've lost friends who've committed suicide because of sexual.
10:59
Speaker 1: Abuse But cannicok is a place WHERE i went To,
11:02
Speaker 1: Ole MISS a lot of PEOPLE i grew up with From,
11:05
Speaker 1: memphis From, houston they went To. Cannacock and the cover
11:09
Speaker 1: up word that you used there IS i think one
11:12
Speaker 1: of the most sad parts about all this is there.
11:14
Speaker 4: Was so many of these NDAs.
11:16
Speaker 1: CENTER i didn't realize, it like how much this was
11:19
Speaker 1: going to just bring up in. Me but when you
11:22
Speaker 1: know people that were abused there and you've set with
11:25
Speaker 1: them and you hear how the system did not protect,
11:28
Speaker 1: them BUT i actually think made them a victim a
11:30
Speaker 1: second time over by the way that they use these,
11:32
Speaker 1: NDAs it is infuriating because you realize, that like everything
11:37
Speaker 1: in this situation worked against them for, years.
11:40
Speaker 5: And that's what came in The texas. HEARINGS i was
11:44
Speaker 5: calling this institutional abuse on top of child sexual. Abuse
11:48
Speaker 5: so you're exactly. Right and, Yes memphis is a huge
11:51
Speaker 5: market FOR canniccuk And kids Of Your america which is
11:55
Speaker 5: another ministry and outside Of branson That Joe white still
11:59
Speaker 5: runs this, day there's been no change in. Leadership no
12:03
Speaker 5: one's been held accountable because of these. Crimes and so
12:06
Speaker 5: you were asking about my story and how we got
12:08
Speaker 5: to this, point and really it was BECAUSE i learned
12:13
Speaker 5: more about my brother's trauma and his death THAN i
12:15
Speaker 5: knew in his life because of THE.
12:16
Speaker 6: Nda so Until treyslaw went.
12:18
Speaker 5: Into effect In Texas september of twenty twenty, FIVE i
12:23
Speaker 5: never saw what he. Signed he wouldn't talk about. It
12:25
Speaker 5: he was so, terrified even in therapeutic, settings even trying
12:28
Speaker 5: to get sober IN aa for, example he was Worried
12:33
Speaker 5: kannicuk would come after him if he mentioned all of
12:36
Speaker 5: the people involved that knew about What pete was doing
12:39
Speaker 5: and didn't report the crimes to the authorities or disciplined him,
12:43
Speaker 5: internally and that allowed this perpetrator to go on and.
12:48
Speaker 5: Abuse what we now know is hundreds of more. Victims
12:51
Speaker 5: and that's one perpetrator. Alone so victims Of kannicuk have
12:55
Speaker 5: asked for three. Things admit to known, failures release IN,
12:58
Speaker 5: das and commission into an. Investigation, since AS i, mentioned
13:03
Speaker 5: The Taney County Sheriff's department missed a few. Spots we
13:07
Speaker 5: don't need a rabbit hole on that right, now but
13:09
Speaker 5: that's the three asks of, survivors very common since steps
13:12
Speaker 5: they could. Take so we've Done cannacuk's job for, them
13:15
Speaker 5: and we've found out that we now know of over
13:18
Speaker 5: ninety perpetrators with allegations against them affiliated With cannoncuk and
13:22
Speaker 5: its associated ministries and programs across the country and.
13:25
Speaker 6: World ninety over, Ninety so the, ninety.
13:29
Speaker 4: How many have been held.
13:30
Speaker 1: Accountable i've got to know that number because AS i
13:34
Speaker 1: was told about this several months, ago they said that
13:38
Speaker 1: not only are there still people in the ninety as
13:40
Speaker 1: you're described that are, affiliated there are some that are
13:43
Speaker 1: still in major leadership roles and around.
13:45
Speaker 5: Children, yes so we're calling it out, again Doing cannoncuck's
13:50
Speaker 5: job for. THEM i think as, parents we have an
13:52
Speaker 5: expectation that if a child molester or a sex offender
13:57
Speaker 5: is caught at an institution where your child was attending or,
14:01
Speaker 5: enrolled that you will be informed if they are ever
14:05
Speaker 5: charged with anything. Criminal that is not what cannacuck has.
14:09
Speaker 5: Done so we've done that job for. Them so facts
14:11
Speaker 5: about cannicuck dot. Com we have a known abusers page
14:15
Speaker 5: where we name thirteen and might even be more now
14:18
Speaker 5: that have convictions that are, yeah they have criminal, indictments
14:23
Speaker 5: convictions or formal allegations in the media coroborated by multiple.
14:27
Speaker 6: Victims and then.
14:29
Speaker 5: The rest of the perpetrators in our database are just
14:33
Speaker 5: still out there living their lives and a lot of them.
14:38
Speaker 6: Have never been held. Accountable we know who they.
14:40
Speaker 5: Are we've turned that database over to the authorities and
14:44
Speaker 5: we are hoping that THE fbi or some sort of
14:46
Speaker 5: law enforcement agency takes, action but the normal thing to
14:50
Speaker 5: do when you're not covering up for pedophiles as an,
14:53
Speaker 5: institution using in das and continuing to promote pedophiles within
14:58
Speaker 5: your organization or moving them around to associated, ministries which
15:02
Speaker 5: is another THING cannicuk has. Done they have a year
15:04
Speaker 5: round ministry called K life similar to A Young, life
15:07
Speaker 5: WHICH i think is better. Known they will move someone
15:10
Speaker 5: that has allegations at the camp to a chapter OF
15:12
Speaker 5: K life where they go on to continue harming.
15:14
Speaker 6: Children so our known abuser's.
15:16
Speaker 5: Page is supposed to be a public facing database for
15:20
Speaker 5: when we know cannonicok affiliate has been convicted and dieted
15:25
Speaker 5: or formally alleged of child sexual, abuse and the rest
15:28
Speaker 5: of it will come to light over time as more
15:30
Speaker 5: and more victims come. Forward the list continues to, grow
15:33
Speaker 5: and with exposure like this we expect even.
15:35
Speaker 1: More america is entering the two hundred and fiftieth year
15:39
Speaker 1: and the direction of this country is being decided right
15:41
Speaker 1: now in our culture and our, economy and who we
15:45

Speaker 2: Bill so one of the things you.
17:14
Speaker 3: Described we did a press conference today Announcing Trays law
17:19
Speaker 3: in The senate and you described the pressure that was
17:22
Speaker 3: on your, brother not just from the camp but also
17:26
Speaker 3: from his own.
17:26
Speaker 2: Lawyer share that story a little.
17:29
Speaker 5: Bit, Yeah, so you, know one of the questions as
17:32
Speaker 5: we were going state by, state you, know starting In
17:34
Speaker 5: texas because that's my home state and that's Where trey grew.
17:38
Speaker 5: Up we spent a few years also In, Atlanta. Georgia
17:41
Speaker 5: georgia's Introduced trades law along with eight other, jurisdictions but
17:44
Speaker 5: Then Missouri Pastreys law Last. August and you, know my
17:50
Speaker 5: brother was abused in so many jurisdictions that there were
17:53
Speaker 5: different options for the. Venue in his civil, case he's
17:57
Speaker 5: good In, texas AS i, mentioned that ended with settlement
18:01
Speaker 5: agreement that involved a RESTRICTIVE. Nda and he was an
18:04
Speaker 5: adult when he sued for the child sexual abuse that he.
18:07
Speaker 6: Suffered but he had exactly and you know that.
18:13
Speaker 5: Therapist after his, DEATH i started doing my own investigation
18:16
Speaker 5: to understand what just happened to my, brother and that
18:21
Speaker 5: therapist said that he had made a comment just before
18:25
Speaker 5: he died that they would always control him and he
18:28
Speaker 5: would never be. Free and that's what it feels like
18:31
Speaker 5: living under AN. Nda and In, america where we stand
18:35
Speaker 5: on freedom and freedom of, speech and anyone who studied constitutional,
18:40
Speaker 5: LAW i mean that is a right as An american
18:44
Speaker 5: citizen to have freedom of, speech and we protect it with.
18:47
Speaker 5: Veracity but in this, case there's been a misuse of,
18:50
Speaker 5: ndias which originally were created to protect intellectual property like
18:56
Speaker 5: The coca cola recipe or read, secrets and they've since
19:02
Speaker 5: been misused to silence victims of childhood sexual, abuse, trafficking
19:08
Speaker 5: even adult sexual assault. Survivors that was addressed in The
19:11
Speaker 5: Speak Out act that passed in twenty twenty two with
19:14
Speaker 5: the co sponsor Of Treys, Law Senator. Jilbrandt but kids
19:18
Speaker 5: are being put under these, NDAs and kids they can't
19:22
Speaker 5: consent to contracts or clauses like, this and so oftentimes
19:25
Speaker 5: it's a guardian or a parent who is signing THIS
19:28
Speaker 5: nda on behalf of their. Child the child grows, up
19:31
Speaker 5: becomes a young man or woman realizes what their parents
19:35
Speaker 5: signed and that they can't own their own story.
19:39
Speaker 1: And it's just a bar or even feel like they
19:41
Speaker 1: can't heal because they can't talk about.
19:43
Speaker 4: It in, fact they're so.
19:45
Speaker 1: Afraid talking to one person that was a victim of,
19:48
Speaker 1: this they described it to me this. Way they, Said
19:50
Speaker 1: cannicut basically had enough money to buy silence to protect
19:55
Speaker 1: the brand because they knew if we were told our,
19:58
Speaker 1: stories the brand would die and all the money would
20:01
Speaker 1: stop coming.
20:01
Speaker 4: In that's a simplistic. Way but you mentioned their.
20:04
Speaker 1: Revenue this was you got to spend money to save
20:08
Speaker 1: this brand and continue to grow in sports and all
20:12
Speaker 1: the other activities that they that they. DO i mean
20:14
Speaker 1: that is that a fair way of putting.
20:16
Speaker 5: IT i think that's, yeah that's definitely a fair way
20:19
Speaker 5: of putting. It and to add the other thing that's
20:23
Speaker 5: a layer of trauma in this is that their cover
20:26
Speaker 5: up bought enough time for these victims to be out of.
20:28
Speaker 5: Statute so they can't now that they know the extent
20:31
Speaker 5: of the cover up unless under a certain discovery, rule
20:34
Speaker 5: which you could speak to as a, lawyer, Senator but
20:38
Speaker 5: they can't even have access to the civil courts and
20:41
Speaker 5: the jurisdiction where they were. Abused so In, missouri the
20:44
Speaker 5: civil statute of limitations to sue an institution that's liable
20:47
Speaker 5: for child sexual abuse or trafficking has been in the
20:50
Speaker 5: age of twenty six and that's been unchanged since nineteen thirty.
20:53
Speaker 5: Nine and so we're doing a lot of advocacy work
20:56
Speaker 5: In missouri to say survivors need more. Time AS i
21:00
Speaker 5: said when you asked the first, question there is a
21:03
Speaker 5: lot of research on delayed. Disclosure my brother was unfortunately
21:08
Speaker 5: forced into disclosure because he was named as a victim
21:11
Speaker 5: during the criminal, proceedings and so he didn't have decades
21:15
Speaker 5: to process what happened to him and then come.
21:17
Speaker 6: Forward but victims that weren't.
21:18
Speaker 5: Named or who came forward closer to the time Of
21:22
Speaker 5: Pete newman's arrest to name one of, again over ninety
21:25
Speaker 5: perpetrators we're aware of.
21:26
Speaker 6: To date they.
21:28
Speaker 2: Got how was he, Caught how was his abuse?
21:32
Speaker 6: Discovered there are a few theories on.
21:34
Speaker 5: That canicut hasn't really been transparent about what led to his.
21:37
Speaker 5: Confession SO i would love to know the answer to that.
21:40
Speaker 5: Question and that's why an independent investigation or some sort
21:43
Speaker 5: of law enforcement agency stepping in is so necessary in.
21:45
Speaker 5: This he confessed allegedly In march two thousand and nine
21:50
Speaker 5: to abusing seven boys and then he wasn't arrested Until
21:55
Speaker 5: september two thousand and, nine after summer camp season when,
21:58
Speaker 5: uninterrupted and then upon arrest they started investigating him, criminally
22:05
Speaker 5: and then that led to his sentencing In february twenty.
22:07
Speaker 5: Ten here we are in twenty twenty, six and because
22:11
Speaker 5: of facts About kannacuk which was created by a coalition
22:15
Speaker 5: of survivor, families and then recent publicity THROUGH Usa today
22:19
Speaker 5: published five articles on. This The dispatch published It The
22:24
Speaker 5: New York. TIMES i just went on The Sean Ryan,
22:27
Speaker 5: show and we're getting more and more disclosures not just
22:31
Speaker 5: About Pete, newman but other perpetrators associated With kannukuck and
22:34
Speaker 5: other leadership who covered this. Up and they are calling
22:38
Speaker 5: attorneys who are, Saying i'm, sorry you're fifteen, thirty forty
22:43
Speaker 5: five years too. Late so victims don't know they're on
22:46
Speaker 5: the clock when perpetrators know exactly, when and institutions Like
22:51
Speaker 5: kannicok know exactly when the deadline is to file a
22:54
Speaker 5: civil lawsuit against. Them so they bought enough time at
22:56
Speaker 5: this point for the cover up to have.
22:59
Speaker 6: Worked.
23:00
Speaker 3: Well one of the things you talked about at the
23:01
Speaker 3: press conference today is how your brother's lawyer was pressuring
23:08
Speaker 3: him to sign THIS, nda and the incentives of the current. System,
23:13
Speaker 3: look an abuser has every incentive in the world to
23:18
Speaker 3: try to cover it, up to try to hide, it
23:19
Speaker 3: to want AN, nda to not have truth and. Transparency
23:24
Speaker 3: and so we are seeing NDAs demanded by abusers in
23:28
Speaker 3: exchange for. Compensation and the way our legal system works
23:34
Speaker 3: is typically if a victim has a, lawyer that lawyer
23:38
Speaker 3: will usually be compensated on a contingency basis where they
23:42
Speaker 3: receive a portion of whatever financial recovery there. Is so
23:48
Speaker 3: the lawyer has every incentive in the world to try
23:51
Speaker 3: to reach a, deal to try to reach a, settlement
23:53
Speaker 3: to have a financial amount, paid and to discount the
23:58
Speaker 3: harm of silencing their. Client and so it's one of
24:05
Speaker 3: the real values of trades.
24:07
Speaker 2: Law it is that.
24:10
Speaker 3: When this passes AND i didn't, say IF i said
24:12
Speaker 3: when we will get this, passed thank. You when this,
24:16
Speaker 3: passes that incentive will go. Away, look if you're negotiating a,
24:21
Speaker 3: SETTLEMENT i used an example. Earlier, today there aren't settlement
24:26
Speaker 3: agreements that, say as a condition of the, settlement you
24:30
Speaker 3: have to deal crack, cocaine because dealing crack cocaine is,
24:34
Speaker 3: illegal and so you can't agree in a settlement to
24:37
Speaker 3: do something that is. Illegal by taking NDAs off the
24:40
Speaker 3: table for forcing victims of child sex abuse to not
24:46
Speaker 3: be able to disclose what happened to, them that incentive
24:51
Speaker 3: for their lawyers to pressure them to do this will go. Away,
24:54
Speaker 3: likewise and, importantly we Drafted trade's law so that a
24:58
Speaker 3: victim can still in insist on AN nda for the.
25:01
Speaker 3: Abuser if a victim DECIDES i don't want my story,
25:04
Speaker 3: told that's your right as. Well we're not going to
25:06
Speaker 3: force a victim to tell his story or her story
25:09
Speaker 3: against their.
25:10
Speaker 1: Will that you're protecting the victim in the way you're writing,
25:13
Speaker 1: this WHICH i think is such an important part of this.
25:15
Speaker 1: CONVERSATION i want people to understand that it's a lot
25:17
Speaker 1: of what we talked about with we want to protect.
25:19
Speaker 1: Victims for, example when we're exposing everything With Epstein, foules
25:22
Speaker 1: it's the same mentality. Here if you don't want your
25:24
Speaker 1: name out, there we want to protect.
25:26
Speaker 3: It.
25:26
Speaker 5: Right that's the heart Of Trey's law is giving survivors
25:30
Speaker 5: ownership of their own, stories, yes so that they can
25:33
Speaker 5: decide what they want told about what happened to. Them
25:36
Speaker 5: the trauma alone is enough. Abuse we don't need to
25:40
Speaker 5: pile that. On and you bring up a good, Point,
25:41
Speaker 5: senator around the incentives and the incidentive's being misaligned because
25:47
Speaker 5: this type of case falls under personal injury. Law and
25:51
Speaker 5: so you've been to law school and in that area
25:55
Speaker 5: of the, law it's typically your attorneys who are taking
25:59
Speaker 5: auto accident pieces or slip and.
26:01
Speaker 6: Falls child sexual abuse is a, fear it's in.
26:04
Speaker 5: IT i like that it's a personal injury claim because
26:07
Speaker 5: it is an injury to the, brain to the, soul
26:10
Speaker 5: and so it should be a personal injury. Claim but
26:13
Speaker 5: the way personal injury lull works is that you are
26:16
Speaker 5: looking to, settle keep this from. GOING i, mean over
26:19
Speaker 5: ninety six percent of CASES i think subtle outside of
26:22
Speaker 5: trial when it comes to personal. Injury and so you,
26:27
Speaker 5: know the victim doesn't want to have to go to
26:28
Speaker 5: trial and put themselves through more. Trauma they are incentivized to.
26:32
Speaker 5: Settle and a lawyer, says this can all be behind
26:34
Speaker 5: you if you sign on the dotted, line and then
26:36
Speaker 5: they can take forty, percent which is the typical commission
26:39
Speaker 5: on a case like, this move on to the next
26:41
Speaker 5: once and, repeat and that doesn't work when we're talking
26:44
Speaker 5: about childhood sexual.
26:45
Speaker 3: Abuse, well and THE Us Supreme court has Described they've,
26:49
Speaker 3: said other than, murder rape is the most grievous harm
26:54
Speaker 3: that could be inflicted to a. Person And i've spent
26:58
Speaker 3: a lot of my career against child's sexual. Abuse so
27:02
Speaker 3: WHEN i was The Solicitor general Of, TEXAS.
27:06
Speaker 2: I argued in front of THE. U.
27:08
Speaker 3: S Supreme court Defending louisiana's law that provided for capital,
27:13
Speaker 3: punishment the death penalty for the most egregious child. Rapist,
27:17
Speaker 3: unfortunately The Supreme court five to four struck that, down
27:20
Speaker 3: so we did not prevail in that. Case texas's law
27:23
Speaker 3: was also struck. Down When louisiana's law was struck, DOWN
27:26
Speaker 3: i also Defended texas has A Texas Sexually Violent Predator
27:31
Speaker 3: Civil commitment law that gives the courts the ability to
27:34
Speaker 3: take a sexually violent predator and put them in civil,
27:37
Speaker 3: commitment take them off the streets to protect. People and
27:41
Speaker 3: a state court of appeals had struck that law down
27:43
Speaker 3: and concluded it was, unconstitutional AND i argued the case
27:47
Speaker 3: in front of The Texas Supreme court defending that, law
27:51
Speaker 3: and we won. Unanimously the law was reinstated and it's
27:54
Speaker 3: now a tool that you have to go after sexual.
27:56
Speaker 3: Predators and you know we met. Before so this, bill
28:01
Speaker 3: my lead co sponsor Is Kirsten, Gellibrand democrat From New.
28:06
Speaker 3: York and then we have on this bill as, well
28:08
Speaker 3: we Have Katie Britt republican From alabama's a dear. Friend
28:12
Speaker 3: we Have Eric, Schmidt republican From, missouri another very good.
28:15
Speaker 3: Friend and then we also Have Amy, Klobachar democrat From.
28:20
Speaker 3: Minnesota we Have Peter, Welch democrat From, vermont and Then Jeane,
28:24
Speaker 3: shaheen A democrat From New. Hampshire AND i think we
28:27
Speaker 3: will get very widespread bipartisan. Support to be, honest those
28:32
Speaker 3: six are the only SIX i. ASKED i started with,
28:35
Speaker 3: Them i've worked all of. Them i've worked with on previous.
28:38
Speaker 3: Legislation But i'll tell You jelibrand AND i started working
28:45
Speaker 3: on this issue more than a decade ago because she
28:48
Speaker 3: was a leader in going after sexual assault in the,
28:51
Speaker 3: military and there's been a real problem with sexual assault
28:53
Speaker 3: in the, military and the way it used to work
28:57
Speaker 3: is the decision about whether to prosecute a rapist was
29:02
Speaker 3: made by the commander and the commander frequently knew the,
29:08
Speaker 3: violator often was close to the, violator and victims of
29:12
Speaker 3: sexual assault in the military were afraid to report the
29:15
Speaker 3: rapes because they didn't believe the commander would be. Fair
29:19
Speaker 3: they believed the commander would be biased in favor of the.
29:23
Speaker 3: Violator and so jelibranon this is back twenty, thirteen WHEN
29:28
Speaker 3: i was a brand new baby senator had just been.
29:30
Speaker 3: Elected kirsten was leading the charge, saying this doesn't make any,
29:34
Speaker 3: sense and the decision of whether to prosecute should not
29:38
Speaker 3: be made by the commanding, officer but rather should be
29:41
Speaker 3: made by a career military, prosecutor so in the, military
29:46
Speaker 3: but not in the chain of, command so not connected
29:50
Speaker 3: to the alleged. Violator AND i will tell you The
29:54
Speaker 3: pentagon fought tooth and. Nail they hated that. Provision AND
29:58
Speaker 3: i was on the ste En At Armed Services committee
30:01
Speaker 3: With kirsten at the, time AND i heard her make the,
30:03
Speaker 3: argument make the argument passionately for changing the prosecution prosecuting
30:09
Speaker 3: decision to a career. Prosecutor and it was one of
30:12
Speaker 3: those instances where sometimes you say, hearings don't you know
30:16
Speaker 3: our our kind of? Performance they don't necessarily change anyone's. Mind,
30:19
Speaker 3: WELL i listened to her arguments AND i was, persuaded
30:22
Speaker 3: AND i went up to her AND i, Said, KIRSTEN
30:23
Speaker 3: i want to team up with you and let's get this.
30:25
Speaker 2: Done and we.
30:26
Speaker 3: Did it took nearly a decade to get it done
30:30
Speaker 3: because The Barack obama wouldn't do. It by the Way
30:32
Speaker 3: obama was, president he could have done it, unilaterally and
30:35
Speaker 3: he wouldn't do.
30:36
Speaker 2: It.
30:37
Speaker 3: Uh and it Took we ultimately got the legislation, passed
30:40
Speaker 3: but it was it was a decade long. Battle this
30:43
Speaker 3: is One i'm confident will be. FASTER i don't think
30:45
Speaker 3: this will take a decade to make. Happen you, know
30:49
Speaker 3: you mentioned at the press conference also that we had
30:53
Speaker 3: another victim of sexual abuse share her. Story her name
30:56
Speaker 3: Is Jaden, harris AND i want to play what she
31:00
Speaker 3: said at the at the press conference because this was this.
31:02
Speaker 2: Was really powerful and and.
31:04
Speaker 3: Moving she was she was sharing about about the sexual
31:09
Speaker 3: violence she experienced and and give a, listen give a.
31:12
Speaker 2: Watch good.
31:15
Speaker 7: Morning, FIRST i want to thank these co sponsors for
31:18
Speaker 7: their leadership and in Filing trey's law at the federal.
31:24
Speaker 7: Level my name Is Jaden, harris nineteen years, old And
31:31
Speaker 7: i'm here today not just as a child sexual abuse
31:34
Speaker 7: survivor From, Branson, missouri but as someone whose voice was
31:37
Speaker 7: protected By Drey's. Law it's why you can be here.
31:40
Speaker 7: Today WHEN i came forward about the ABUSE i, EXPERIENCED
31:47
Speaker 7: i was prepared for it to be. Difficult WHAT i
31:50
Speaker 7: wasn't prepared for was the intimidation not only for my
31:54
Speaker 7: abuser but for my own for my own lawyer to
31:57
Speaker 7: sign a non disclosure agreement in exchange for restitution during
32:01
Speaker 7: a mediation. PROCESS i was alone when it came to
32:05
Speaker 7: fighting for my. Voice it was both my abuser and
32:09
Speaker 7: my lawyer that tried to require me to sign AN,
32:14
Speaker 7: nda a contract to a clause that would have restricted
32:19
Speaker 7: my ability to speak about the details of what happened
32:21
Speaker 7: to me for the rest of my. Life imagine being
32:25
Speaker 7: told you can never tell your own. Truth despite the
32:29
Speaker 7: bowling for my attorney and all those involved in the,
32:32
Speaker 7: case in my, HEART i KNEW i had to stand for,
32:34
Speaker 7: truth not just for, myself but for others who feel
32:39
Speaker 7: they had been. Silenced i'm standing here today with my
32:45
Speaker 7: voice Because trey's law protected it as a matter of public,
32:48
Speaker 7: policy AND i was able to achieve settlement while preserving
32:52
Speaker 7: my ability to speak out and hope of protecting. Others
32:57
Speaker 7: due to learning About Trey's law And, MISSOURI i knew something.
33:00
Speaker 7: IMPORTANT i cannot be legally forced into. Silence no agreement
33:05
Speaker 7: could take away my right to speak about my own
33:08
Speaker 7: experience and those responsible for the. Abuse that legal right changed.
33:13
Speaker 7: Everything it shifted the balance and. Power it meant that
33:17
Speaker 7: any resolution would not come at the cost of me
33:20
Speaker 7: owning my, story not only as having a voice essential
33:25
Speaker 7: to my healing, journey but is also HOW i can warn.
33:28
Speaker 7: Others my abuser is still out in public every. Day
33:32
Speaker 7: he goes by the Name. Raisa he is a well
33:35
Speaker 7: known entertainer In branson who still has a magic, show
33:39
Speaker 7: And i'm concerned about ongoing. Victimization the criminal justice system
33:47
Speaker 7: has done nothing to remove him from being around. Children
33:51
Speaker 7: So i'm going to do. Something i'm speaking out, today
33:55
Speaker 7: And i'm advocating the law that protected me to protect
33:59
Speaker 7: victims every. Where federal action On Trey's law is. CRITICAL
34:06
Speaker 7: a survivor's freedom of speech should not depend on. GEOGRAPHY
34:10
Speaker 7: i am fortunate That Trey's law had passed In missouri
34:13
Speaker 7: and allowed me to keep my voice but SOMEONE'S zip
34:16
Speaker 7: code should not determine whether they can tell the truth
34:19
Speaker 7: and warn the public about. Predators this needs to be.
34:22
Speaker 7: National trey's law is straightforward but. Powerful it makes non
34:29
Speaker 7: disclosure agreements in cases of child sexual abuse void and.
34:33
Speaker 7: Unenforceable it ensures that secrecy cannot be purchased when a
34:38
Speaker 7: child has been. Harmed it affirms that survivors can be,
34:41
Speaker 7: seen heard and, believed and that's in the best interest
34:45
Speaker 7: of public. Safety what almost happened to me citing away
34:49
Speaker 7: my voice should never be an option in this. COUNTRY
34:53
Speaker 7: i am grateful to be part of today's important milestone
34:57
Speaker 7: and making that happen in setting truth for, You thank, You.
35:06
Speaker 4: Santaer you're watching. That it's.
35:08
Speaker 1: Painful it also is incredible to see someone like that
35:12
Speaker 1: get their voice because of this law and how that
35:16
Speaker 1: was enacted in her. State and that's exactly what you
35:21
Speaker 1: are trying to do. Nationwide and it's WHY i say
35:23
Speaker 1: this for everyone, watching please share. This there may be
35:28
Speaker 1: somebody that needs to know the website with a connection With.
35:32
Speaker 1: Cannonicut there may be someone else that needs to know
35:34
Speaker 1: this because they're in AN. Nba this is why we
35:37
Speaker 1: do this show And it's one of those episodes THAT
35:40
Speaker 1: i hope you'll put it everywhere on social.
35:42
Speaker 3: Media, well and, look there's something really powerful about a
35:49
Speaker 3: survivor taking ownership of their own, story of their own
35:53
Speaker 3: abuse and sharing their. Story it can be, healing it
35:57
Speaker 3: can be. Empowering look when When jaden told her, story
36:02
Speaker 3: there was not a dry eye in the, ROOM i
36:04
Speaker 3: mean it was you just heard, it and for those
36:07
Speaker 3: of you watching, online you saw. It and this is
36:11
Speaker 3: a nineteen year old young woman who was bearing her.
36:15
Speaker 3: Soul and there's something powerful a for the survivor to
36:21
Speaker 3: move past the pain and. Grief but it's also powerful
36:26
Speaker 3: because for every survivor that tells her story or his,
36:29
Speaker 3: story there are dozens or hundreds or even thousands of
36:35
Speaker 3: other victims who never told. Anybody and one of the
36:39
Speaker 3: horrific things about this crime in, Particular, listen if you're
36:44
Speaker 3: walking home at night and you get mugged and beaten,
36:47
Speaker 3: up you're not typically embarrassed or ashamed to ADMIT i
36:51
Speaker 3: got mugged and beaten.
36:52
Speaker 2: Up someone stole my.
36:53
Speaker 3: Wallet sexual, assault and particularly sexual assault for, Kids, uh
37:01
Speaker 3: the the, guilt the self, loathing the fear that the
37:07
Speaker 3: precise the.
37:08
Speaker 2: Shame.
37:10
Speaker 3: Uh so many victims are trapped in silence and never
37:17
Speaker 3: report their.
37:18
Speaker 2: Crimes.
37:19
Speaker 3: Uh and and so there is a power not just
37:22
Speaker 3: for the, survivor but but for everyone else who's been a,
37:28
Speaker 3: victim who has not been able two to own their.
37:35
Speaker 3: Truth and you, KNOW i don't like language like. That
37:38
Speaker 3: own their truth sounds a little new agy for. Me
37:40
Speaker 3: it's not the WAY i normally see.
37:42
Speaker 6: Right but survivors hold the truth.
37:45
Speaker 2: And here it is. Right.
37:47
Speaker 3: IT i don't think someone has their truth on whether
37:50
Speaker 3: two plus two is four. Right but but your life
37:54
Speaker 3: and your, experience no one should take, away particularly from a,
38:01
Speaker 3: child the ability to tell your. Story and it's And
38:08
Speaker 3: i'll tell you, Look Trey's law would not have been
38:11
Speaker 3: a law In, Missouri, elizabeth without your, leadership it would
38:16
Speaker 3: not have been a law In. Texas it would not
38:17
Speaker 3: have been a. LAW i, mean you have devoted a
38:19
Speaker 3: lot of time to fighting for this.
38:21
Speaker 2: Nationwide.
38:23
Speaker 5: Yeah AND i hope to get back to my day job.
38:27
Speaker 5: Eventually i'm a mother of. Three i've got other things to.
38:29
Speaker 5: Do this is not SOMETHING i want to. Carry it's
38:33
Speaker 5: always encouraging when legislators like yourself step up and say
38:38
Speaker 5: we're going to champion this on behalf of survivors so
38:41
Speaker 5: That trey's outcome doesn't happen. Again AND i just want
38:46
Speaker 5: to comment On jaden and what she did today because
38:49
Speaker 5: that was. Heroic it will inspire others to come, forward
38:54
Speaker 5: and as she stated in her, testimony she just doesn't
38:57
Speaker 5: want other people to continue to be victim her. Abuser
39:01
Speaker 5: today was the first time she named her. Abuser, wow.
39:06
Speaker 6: AND i am so.
39:08
Speaker 3: HONORED i didn't realize that when she said, THAT i
39:10
Speaker 3: assumed she had said it. PREVIOUSLY i did not realize
39:13
Speaker 3: she had.
39:13
Speaker 5: Not that's when a press conference becomes, holy sacred space
39:19
Speaker 5: because she was sharing the truth about a predator who's
39:23
Speaker 5: still out. There AND i am amazed by her courage
39:29
Speaker 5: because she achieved settlement last year and asked if she
39:34
Speaker 5: wanted this. Opportunity it was healing for, her as hard
39:37
Speaker 5: as it was to be able to stand on. Truth
39:41
Speaker 5: and that's one of our slogans with the Treys wal
39:43
Speaker 5: campaign is every voice of truth, matters BECAUSE i agree with,
39:47
Speaker 5: YOU i don't like this language Around they are. Truth
39:50
Speaker 5: there is absolute. Truth And jaden stood on that today
39:57
Speaker 5: in her, remarks and we got to stand beside her
40:00
Speaker 5: and that was so, powerful and like you, said not
40:03
Speaker 5: a dry eye in the, room because if you're not
40:05
Speaker 5: personally affected by child sexual, abuse you sure know someone
40:09
Speaker 5: Who waymen is or will come forward eventually about.
40:13
Speaker 2: That the numbers are.
40:14
Speaker 5: Staggering, yeah and we have studied. This only one in
40:18
Speaker 5: seven victims will ever come. Forward and the deadly disclosure
40:23
Speaker 5: ISSUE i was bringing up, earlier especially with male, victims
40:26
Speaker 5: they often don't disclose until between the age of fifty and,
40:29
Speaker 5: seventy and so it's important parents understand that because AGAIN
40:34
Speaker 5: i think they think if someone experiences, this that child's
40:39
Speaker 5: going to come home and tell mom and dad. Immediately
40:41
Speaker 5: but to your, point it's not like you, know an
40:44
Speaker 5: injury you would endure on the streets or in some
40:48
Speaker 5: sort of other. Accident this does have an element of,
40:51
Speaker 5: shame and What jaden did today is she put the shame.
40:54
Speaker 5: Backward it belongs on the person who as it was
40:58
Speaker 5: never her.
40:59
Speaker 3: Fault and let me say to anyone listening to, this
41:01
Speaker 3: if you've been a, victim it's not your. Fault and
41:04
Speaker 3: that's one of the lies these abusers try to convince
41:08
Speaker 3: children that it is your fault that you invited, this
41:12
Speaker 3: that the blame is with, you and that is a
41:14
Speaker 3: total and complete.
41:16
Speaker 5: Lie, Yeah and that's what grooming does and what grooming
41:19
Speaker 5: is is it creates. Secrecy if you ever tell, Anyone
41:23
Speaker 5: i'm going to hurt your loved, one or if you
41:27
Speaker 5: ever tell, anyone it's going to ruin. Everything that is
41:29
Speaker 5: a grooming tactic to keep the victim quiet and they
41:32
Speaker 5: often don't come out of that brainwashing for, many many.
41:35
Speaker 5: Years so that's why research shows all of this around
41:38
Speaker 5: it late.
41:38
Speaker 6: Disclosure.
41:39
Speaker 5: Jaden she was able to move from victimization to survivor
41:44
Speaker 5: and now survivor advocate in a matter of, months and
41:47
Speaker 5: that's what we got to witness today thanks to you
41:50
Speaker 5: Introducing Trey's law federally along With Senator jilligren and other co.
41:54
Speaker 5: Sponsors AND i Thought Senator britt had some really poignant
41:56
Speaker 5: remarks as.
41:57
Speaker 4: Well she was.
41:57
Speaker 5: Fantastic, oh and it is very clear that the group
42:02
Speaker 5: you mentioned, earlier the ones you've asked so, far they
42:05
Speaker 5: are behind. Survivors they want to protect survivors' voices and
42:08
Speaker 5: that's What Trey's law will. Do and it does need
42:11
Speaker 5: to be national because going state by state creates an
42:14
Speaker 5: imbalance protects the people in, power the predators and the
42:19
Speaker 5: institutions that harbor these predators over a child having ownership
42:23
Speaker 5: of their. Story and that's the core of our mission.
42:27
Speaker 5: Here and thank you for taking time out of not
42:31
Speaker 5: a slow news day to make this a priority to
42:33
Speaker 5: hear from people Like jaden and others.
42:35
Speaker 3: Who spoke this is important to happen and to go
42:38
Speaker 3: to the really corrosive power of. Shame last year and
42:43
Speaker 3: we talked about this earlier, today a law THAT i
42:46
Speaker 3: authored and we passed into law was To Take It Down.
42:49
Speaker 3: Act And Take It Down act makes it a crime
42:53
Speaker 3: to post non consensual intimate, imagery either real, pictures and
42:58
Speaker 3: you see so called revenge porn of explicit photographs or
43:02
Speaker 3: videos that a couple breaks up and one, Decides, Okay
43:06
Speaker 3: i'm going to hurt my former lover and publish and
43:12
Speaker 3: no one has the right to make that public and
43:14
Speaker 3: to do that to someone. Else but we've also seen
43:17
Speaker 3: WITH ai the rise of deep, fakes and this problem
43:22
Speaker 3: has increased more than three thousand percent in the last,
43:25
Speaker 3: year and more than ninety percent of the victims or
43:27
Speaker 3: either women or teenage. Girls and when we were pushing
43:32
Speaker 3: to pass it and building the coalition to pass.
43:34
Speaker 2: It one of the things we.
43:35
Speaker 3: Did The First lady became very actively involved in this,
43:39
Speaker 3: legislation AND i appreciated. SHE i hosted The First lady
43:42
Speaker 3: On Capitol hill and she was at a roundtable where
43:45
Speaker 3: she met with a number of the. Victims and to
43:50
Speaker 3: give you a, sense there was one person who testified
43:53
Speaker 3: who is a state legislator In South carolina whose son
44:00
Speaker 3: had received it was, online and he was a, teenager
44:06
Speaker 3: and he thought he was talking with a cute teenage.
44:09
Speaker 3: Girl and the supposed cute teenage girl was flirting with,
44:14
Speaker 3: him and teenage boys everyone can make foolish, decisions but
44:20
Speaker 3: teenage boys in. Particular this cute girl convinced him to
44:26
Speaker 3: take revealing in naked pictures of himself and to send those.
44:31
Speaker 3: Pictures it turned out that the cute girl was not
44:36
Speaker 3: a cute, girl but rather was a, predator a, predator
44:42
Speaker 3: a foreign predator who then began blackmailing him and, Saying
44:47
Speaker 3: i'm going to take this picture that you just. Took
44:50
Speaker 3: you just took a naked picture of yourself and send
44:52
Speaker 3: it to. Me i'm going to send this picture to your.
44:55
Speaker 3: Family i'm going to send it to your Parents i'm
44:57
Speaker 3: going to send it to your. Friends i'm going to
44:58
Speaker 3: send it to everyone unless you give me money. Sextortion and,
45:04
Speaker 3: tragically this teenage boy took his. Life the entire exchange
45:09
Speaker 3: from the first interaction to when he took his own
45:13
Speaker 3: life was ninety.
45:14
Speaker 2: Minutes and his father shared that.
45:18
Speaker 3: Story but that's the power of shame of this teenager
45:21
Speaker 3: who had taken a picture of thinking he was, flirting
45:24
Speaker 3: and then the terror of IF i get exposed for,
45:28
Speaker 3: that which look compared to being a victim of sexual,
45:32
Speaker 3: assault taking a picture of yourself is not nearly as,
45:36
Speaker 3: severe and yet that shame was so powerful that that
45:42
Speaker 3: teenage boy took his own. LIFE i, mean this is
45:45
Speaker 3: the pressures on our. Kids they're, enormous and they face
45:50
Speaker 3: things that technology amplifies all of.
45:54
Speaker 6: This, yeah it's really an. Epidemic.
45:57
Speaker 2: Yeah and.
46:00
Speaker 6: As a mom of, THREE i know you have two.
46:01
Speaker 5: Girls the threats are different than they were in our
46:05
Speaker 5: childhoods and.
46:06
Speaker 6: Very, different very.
46:07
Speaker 3: Different we were playing one in three one three kids
46:10
Speaker 3: will be propositioned sexually.
46:12
Speaker 2: Online, yeah one.
46:13
Speaker 5: Three and so, again thank you for championing The Take
46:17
Speaker 5: It Down act and your co sponsors and the survivors
46:21
Speaker 5: and sadly the families victimized in that. Situation The National
46:24
Speaker 5: center On Missy next With Your children just put out
46:26
Speaker 5: a very powerful video on that issue in. Particular and
46:29
Speaker 5: WHEN i was the board chair of an anti trafficking,
46:31
Speaker 5: organization THE fbi put out their notice on sex. Stortion
46:35
Speaker 5: we had something come through a case around girls being
46:38
Speaker 5: trafficked On. Venmo so it sometimes often these apps parents
46:42
Speaker 5: aren't even thinking, about but roadblocks especially, Atrocious so many
46:49
Speaker 5: examples of abuse happening on, discord and then what they
46:53
Speaker 5: do is they take it. Live so in my brother's,
46:56
Speaker 5: story it was an institution that covered up. Abuse now
47:00
Speaker 5: these tech companies covering up abuse and the bad actors
47:04
Speaker 5: are a step ahead of, us and the legislation can't
47:08
Speaker 5: continue to be. Reactive WHAT i Think trey's law does
47:13
Speaker 5: is it removes that barrier because the shame is already
47:15
Speaker 5: inherent in the crime, itself and it removes that barrier
47:19
Speaker 5: so that victims come forward, Quicker we can catch the
47:22
Speaker 5: bad guys, faster and the truth comes to light a
47:25
Speaker 5: lot sooner than when the power and balance is in
47:29
Speaker 5: such a way that, lawyers even plaintiffs attorneys as we've
47:32
Speaker 5: discussed or others are keeping that victim from speaking. Out
47:38
Speaker 5: so NDA's are one. Barrier but the shame is real
47:42
Speaker 5: and the gap in parntal education is, real and that's
47:45
Speaker 5: why conversations like this really.
47:47
Speaker 2: Matter, Well, elizabeth thank you for taking your. PAIN i
47:52
Speaker 2: know you missed your.
47:54
Speaker 3: BROTHER i know you feel the pain every, day but
47:59
Speaker 3: thank you for taking that and Saying i'm not just
48:02
Speaker 3: going to. Degrieve i'm not just going to. Weep i'm
48:05
Speaker 3: going to use the pain to make a difference and
48:08
Speaker 3: help others because your courage. Matters it has already changed
48:13
Speaker 3: the law in a number of states across the, country
48:15
Speaker 3: and it's going to change the law. Nationally and your
48:18
Speaker 3: leadership is why this is. Happening and SO i just
48:20
Speaker 3: want to say thank.
48:21
Speaker 6: You it's a sacred.
48:22
Speaker 4: Honor final QUESTION i want to bring up real quick.
48:26
Speaker 1: One will you give the website one more time for
48:28
Speaker 1: people that may have been affected At cannicock with the
48:31
Speaker 1: place where your brother, was and to senator so this
48:34
Speaker 1: doesn't drag on for a decade to get it. Passed
48:37
Speaker 1: what can vertict listeners do to help advocate for? This
48:42
Speaker 1: and no matter who their senator.
48:44
Speaker 5: Is so the whistleblower website on Cannon cook Is facts
48:49
Speaker 5: About cannoncock dot. Com and then our website For Trey's
48:53
Speaker 5: law Is tradeslaw dot. Org there's a community page for
48:56
Speaker 5: survivors who want to tell their story in a safe
48:58
Speaker 5: way until we get this ledge past and they don't
49:01
Speaker 5: feel safe coming out fully in their. Identity we had
49:04
Speaker 5: a survivor testify In missouri just a couple of weeks,
49:07
Speaker 5: ago and he, said for twenty five, Years i've been
49:09
Speaker 5: A John doe and Today i'm coming forward in my
49:10
Speaker 5: full name because of trays passing In. Texas that's the
49:13
Speaker 5: power Of Trey's law In. Texas and you, know we
49:17
Speaker 5: heard About missouri today at the press conference and just
49:19
Speaker 5: Replay jaden's.
49:21
Speaker 6: Remarks so this needs to be.
49:23
Speaker 5: National the other way to support this effort is through
49:27
Speaker 5: The No More Victims alliance and that website is In
49:30
Speaker 5: mvalliance dot. Org and we have a lot of advocates
49:34
Speaker 5: and allies who want to help support. This And Senator
49:37
Speaker 5: i'm curious your thoughts as far as what are the
49:39
Speaker 5: most effective calls to action for people that want to jump.
49:44
Speaker 3: In so let me say one. Thing the press, conference
49:47
Speaker 3: we had probably about fifty people who.
49:50
Speaker 6: Came it was, packed.
49:51
Speaker 3: Many of whom were themselves victims or they were the
49:55
Speaker 3: families of. Victims and the, emotions the tea years in the.
50:00
Speaker 3: Room it WAS i actually think that THE tv cameras
50:04
Speaker 3: did not pick up on the folks that were, there
50:07
Speaker 3: that were supporting what we were. Doing but it was really. Powerful,
50:10
Speaker 3: look what can you? Do one THING i would encourage
50:12
Speaker 3: you to. Do share this, Podcast send this podcast to your,
50:15
Speaker 3: friends send them the YouTube, link send them the audio.
50:20
Speaker 3: Link encourage people to learn about trades, law and then
50:27
Speaker 3: pick up the phone and make a phone. Call call your,
50:30
Speaker 3: senator call your house, member and urge them past trades.
50:34
Speaker 3: Law look those phone. Calls people wonder do those phone calls?
50:38
Speaker 3: Matter do they make a? Difference And i'll tell you they.
50:40
Speaker 3: DO i get a report every, day AND i think
50:44
Speaker 3: this is true for most members Of. CONGRESS i get
50:46
Speaker 3: a report of how many calls we got and what
50:49
Speaker 3: the topics, were what the people were. Urging and you,
50:52
Speaker 3: notice if there's a surge on a, topic it makes
50:57
Speaker 3: a difference and it focuses the. Mind so speaking, out
51:01
Speaker 3: urging your elected representatives to support this. Law as we've
51:04
Speaker 3: got broad bipartisan, Support we're going to get this done
51:08
Speaker 3: and also speak, out you, know speak out on social,
51:11
Speaker 3: media put up a post On, facebook put up a
51:13
Speaker 3: post on x or or True social Or instagram or
51:16
Speaker 3: whatever whatever platform you. Use but but speak, out uh
51:22
Speaker 3: and advocate it because the more people hear about, THIS
51:27
Speaker 3: i think it is basic common.
51:28
Speaker 2: Sense there is no reason a.
51:31
Speaker 3: Child lacks the emotional maturity to make a decision to
51:37
Speaker 3: bind themselves by AN. Nda and And trade's law is
51:40
Speaker 3: going to, say we're not going to allow children to
51:42
Speaker 3: be taken advantage of first when they're, abused but they're
51:45
Speaker 3: they're taking advantage of a second time when when they
51:49
Speaker 3: are pressured into signing AN nda and muzzled for the
51:54
Speaker 3: rest of their. Life and and, look we can't necessarily
51:59
Speaker 3: stop every instance of abuse of kids in the first,
52:03
Speaker 3: instance so though obviously we want, to but every predator
52:07
Speaker 3: we take off the street stops that predator for victimizing another,
52:12
Speaker 3: child another. Victim but we can stop the second. Victimization
52:16
Speaker 3: we can say we are not going to, allow as
52:18
Speaker 3: a matter of, law for children who have experienced this
52:23
Speaker 3: violence to be. Silenced and that's what we're trying to.
52:25
Speaker 3: Do And, elizabeth that's what your leadership is producing.
52:28
Speaker 5: Well and that's why we call this a public safety.
52:30
Speaker 5: Bill and you, know nothing will bring my brother. Back
52:34
Speaker 5: and thank you for acknowledging, that like this is happening
52:37
Speaker 5: out of, heartbreak AND i see it as you, know
52:42
Speaker 5: grief can be love and. Action So i'm taking action
52:46
Speaker 5: because of what my brother's life and death has taught.
52:49
Speaker 5: Me so bigger, picture you, know encourage people to not
52:53
Speaker 5: let these hardened lessons die in.
52:57
Speaker 6: Vain we won't let this be in.
52:58
Speaker 5: Vain and thank you for taking action with, Me with
53:02
Speaker 5: all the survivors in the room, today who flew in
53:04
Speaker 5: from across the. Country they've been advocating In georgia And
53:07
Speaker 5: alabama And missouri And, texas and they showed up in
53:11
Speaker 5: that room and it was, yes full of, tears but
53:13
Speaker 5: also full of.
53:14
Speaker 6: Hope.
53:14
Speaker 5: Yes and there's some other bills right now that it needs,
53:17
Speaker 5: support like The Renewed Hope act and The Defiance, act
53:21
Speaker 5: which is a compliment to The Take It Down. Act
53:23
Speaker 5: and so This congress can achieve a lot to protect.
53:26
Speaker 5: Victims and if people do call their elected, legislators then
53:33
Speaker 5: we can get this. Done AND i love hearing you
53:35
Speaker 5: say that over and over that it's not an if
53:38
Speaker 5: it's a, win, yes and you know with this kind
53:41
Speaker 5: of thing there's never a. Win it is a lose
53:44
Speaker 5: lose in my family's. Case but, we like you, said
53:49
Speaker 5: we can prevent this from. Happening we can catch it
53:51
Speaker 5: sooner and this era can.
53:53
Speaker 4: End, amen don't.
53:55
Speaker 1: Forget we do this show three days a, Week, Monday
53:57
Speaker 1: wednesday And. FRIDAY i ask you if if you get
54:00
Speaker 1: to see, this please share the video YouTube video On
54:04
Speaker 1: facebook as. Well you can share it on x and
54:07
Speaker 1: share this. Podcast you can hit that little forward button
54:10
Speaker 1: and share it wherever you are on social. Media hopefully
54:12
Speaker 1: you can help others and victims come forward and understand
54:15
Speaker 1: what's happening with the laws and how they're.
54:17
Speaker 4: Changing, also be an.
54:17
Speaker 1: Advocate talk to your senator and call their offices and
54:21
Speaker 1: let them know about this.
54:22
Speaker 4: Law they may not know what's going on with.
54:23
Speaker 1: It let them know why you're in favor of, it
54:26
Speaker 1: why they should get behind it so it doesn't take
54:28
Speaker 1: ten years to get this pass and The senat AND
54:30
Speaker 1: i will see you back here in a couple of
54:32
Speaker 1: days
