- 0:00Speaker 1: And I remember being like, that is the most ft
- 0:02Speaker 1: up thing that I've ever heard in my life, where
- 0:05Speaker 1: it's like, we're looking for Donald phase on type. I'll
- 0:08Speaker 1: go in on the audition and they're like, well, we're
- 0:10Speaker 1: looking for Donald phase on type, but a better version
- 0:13Speaker 1: of Donald Donald phase on ish but full phase on, right,
- 0:17Speaker 1: don't go full phase on. You went full phase on?
- 0:20Speaker 1: You Donald phase on went too far in the phase
- 0:23Speaker 1: on direction. Here's some stories about show we made about
- 0:29Speaker 1: bunch of dots and nurses and stories. So ye around
- 0:39Speaker 1: here are yea around here A welcome back, everybody, Welcome
- 0:50Speaker 1: back to the Rewatch Show with Donald one, O two
- 0:55Speaker 1: and now Donald. You pointed out something very wise, and
- 0:58Speaker 1: that is that you know, when you do a pilot,
- 1:00Speaker 1: you you shoot the pilot and then you have no
- 1:03Speaker 1: idea if the show is gonna get picked up. And
- 1:05Speaker 1: there's often a lot of time between when you shot
- 1:08Speaker 1: the pilot and then let's say the network says, okay,
- 1:11Speaker 1: we're gonna make it a series, and then you go
- 1:13Speaker 1: and you you go to a thing called the upfronts,
- 1:15Speaker 1: which is when your show is selected. You go to
- 1:18Speaker 1: a huge party in New York City where they announced
- 1:21Speaker 1: where the network is going to announce all of the
- 1:23Speaker 1: new shows, and this is a very thrilling thing for
- 1:26Speaker 1: a young actor. Absolutely, And also when Scrubs got picked up,
- 1:32Speaker 1: it was considered one of the better pilots of that time.
- 1:37Speaker 1: And so when we went to upfront, I remember all
- 1:39Speaker 1: of the heat that we had behind us at Upfront,
- 1:42Speaker 1: Like even the party for all of the upfront shows
- 1:46Speaker 1: was kind of themed towards us, you know what I mean.
- 1:50Speaker 1: And you know, you get there and you and you
- 1:52Speaker 1: and you meet a bunch of executives for the first time,
- 1:56Speaker 1: and you don't really know who they are because nobody
- 1:59Speaker 1: really knows exactly get us until you're on the network
- 2:02Speaker 1: and somebody tells you, Okay, that's my boss and that's
- 2:05Speaker 1: his boss. And that reminds me of a wonderful story
- 2:09Speaker 1: about you, because we were we were so first we
- 2:12Speaker 1: go to the party and it's this amazing party and
- 2:13Speaker 1: it's you know, we were just wide on. We couldn't
- 2:16Speaker 1: believe we were here. I mean, I was waiting tables
- 2:18Speaker 1: a few months ago and and uh, here we are
- 2:22Speaker 1: in New York at this Gianet party and you have
- 2:24Speaker 1: to you take pictures with a lot of people and
- 2:26Speaker 1: you know, you're getting treated like a celebrity and and
- 2:28Speaker 1: you're not. No one even knows who you are really yet,
- 2:30Speaker 1: at least especially in my case. And um, and then
- 2:34Speaker 1: then we go to this party and there were celebrities
- 2:36Speaker 1: at the party. I remember Kevin Nealon, who I was
- 2:38Speaker 1: a huge fan of from SNL as an example. He
- 2:41Speaker 1: was I think literally might have been one of the
- 2:43Speaker 1: first celebrities I ever met, was Kevin Neilan at this party.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And I remember thinking, like, oh my god, we're hanging
- 2:49Speaker 1: out with with celebrities, like we've made it. Yeah, you know.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Sean Hayes was another person who was a big champion,
- 2:56Speaker 1: like he loved the show, and it was really awesome
- 2:59Speaker 1: to have the dude from Will and Grace, who at
- 3:02Speaker 1: this point was really famous on television. That show is
- 3:05Speaker 1: huge and and do you remember any other stars that
- 3:07Speaker 1: were at that party. I remember. I just remember because
- 3:09Speaker 1: I was such an SNL fan as a kid, that
- 3:11Speaker 1: I was so geeked out that that Kevin Neil was there.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I think there may have been some other older SNL faces,
- 3:16Speaker 1: but it was it was all the It was like
- 3:19Speaker 1: a NBC rich at any anyone who was on NBC
- 3:23Speaker 1: at that time was at at the party. Now we proceeded,
- 3:28Speaker 1: understandably to get quite intoxicated at this party. Oh my gosh.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I remember Bill Lawrence saying like, all right, guys, just
- 3:34Speaker 1: so you know, like don't like, you know, there's been
- 3:36Speaker 1: a lot of executives at this party, like I understand
- 3:38Speaker 1: your New York your life has just changed, but like,
- 3:40Speaker 1: don't get ship faced to all of us, all of us,
- 3:46Speaker 1: all of us Sarah Chawk's famous line, even you guys
- 3:50Speaker 1: ever heard of my Cosmopolitan? Yeah? Right, Sarah. Sarah stumbled
- 3:55Speaker 1: up to us sideways and she's like, have you guys
- 3:57Speaker 1: ever heard of a Cosmopolitan? They're great? And then I
- 4:03Speaker 1: remember cut for some reason at this bar. Wasn't there
- 4:05Speaker 1: like a trappie like a trapez but what do you
- 4:09Speaker 1: call that thing where you swing on a trapeez? Say
- 4:13Speaker 1: too dangerous to real trapeze? But was there? It was
- 4:16Speaker 1: something like that. It was a bar in the middle.
- 4:18Speaker 1: It was like a bar. I think it was in
- 4:20Speaker 1: the middle of the bar. It was in the meat
- 4:21Speaker 1: packy story. I think it was called park or something anyway,
- 4:24Speaker 1: and she was on I remember her being on the
- 4:27Speaker 1: bar and flipping over and just showing everybody. You know
- 4:31Speaker 1: what she had on underneath that dress she wore that
- 4:34Speaker 1: day because she was And I remember her husband at
- 4:37Speaker 1: the time being like, that's it, we're going home. Time
- 4:39Speaker 1: to go home, let's go. My favorite part of the
- 4:41Speaker 1: night is Donald was giving everyone noogies, and well, all right,
- 4:46Speaker 1: let's let's let me tell the story and then you
- 4:48Speaker 1: can clarify. Let me tell this. Let's start from the beginning, though,
- 4:51Speaker 1: Let's start from the very beginning. Okay, So Scott Sassa
- 4:55Speaker 1: was the dude that I thought was in charge of
- 4:57Speaker 1: all of NBC at the time. I think he was
- 5:01Speaker 1: higher up than than Jeff Zucker, who we're going to
- 5:04Speaker 1: talk about. Jeff Zucker was the I believe, the president
- 5:07Speaker 1: of NBC who's now actually now the president of CNN,
- 5:11Speaker 1: but at the time, he was the president of NBC.
- 5:14Speaker 1: He had just come from whatever, the Today Show at
- 5:17Speaker 1: the time, and then he'd gone on to be the
- 5:21Speaker 1: head of NBC. And I didn't know this, so Donald
- 5:24Speaker 1: didn't know who he was. You're gonna ruin my story.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Donald didn't know who he was. I thought he was
- 5:27Speaker 1: Scott Sass's assistant. And Donald was going around giving everyone
- 5:31Speaker 1: noggies and I look over and Donald has Jeff Zucker,
- 5:34Speaker 1: the president of the network, in a full headlock, and
- 5:38Speaker 1: he's giving him a drunken noggie on his bald head.
- 5:43Speaker 1: And I hear Jeff Zucker, go please Donald. No. That's
- 5:53Speaker 1: entire friendship. Whenever Donald like tells me a cringe e
- 5:56Speaker 1: story that makes me want to run away, I just
- 5:58Speaker 1: tell him about please Donald, no, Jeff Zucker. You know,
- 6:01Speaker 1: at this point, I'm giving everybody love because I'm so
- 6:04Speaker 1: excited that we're on the network. It's going down, and
- 6:07Speaker 1: I look over and I see Jeff Zucker in my mind,
- 6:11Speaker 1: Scott Sass's assistant standing over by the bar, uh, you know,
- 6:16Speaker 1: by himself, or he might even have been with somebody.
- 6:19Speaker 1: And I'm like, hey, you come over here to give out.
- 6:22Speaker 1: And he's like he's like no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 6:24Speaker 1: no no no. And I pointed at him again, and
- 6:26Speaker 1: I'm like, and I get a little bit more, you know,
- 6:28Speaker 1: agro about it, and I'm like, no, you get over
- 6:31Speaker 1: here right now, and he's like no, no, no, no,
- 6:34Speaker 1: no no, And so I march over to him, drunk
- 6:37Speaker 1: as kim being I've seen you march. When Donald marches
- 6:40Speaker 1: his arms swing and I walk up to him and
- 6:43Speaker 1: I grabbed him and I put him in the headlock,
- 6:45Speaker 1: and I'm like, don't you ever tell me no? And
- 6:48Speaker 1: I'm grabbing him and I'm giving Jeff Zucker a nuggie.
- 6:51Speaker 1: And I remember Bill Lawrence like a few days later
- 6:55Speaker 1: being like, dude, Donald, I just have to ask you
- 6:59Speaker 1: if this act really happened, But did you give Jeff
- 7:03Speaker 1: Zucker a noogie? I was like, I gave so many
- 7:05Speaker 1: people noggies. I gave so many I can't recall who
- 7:08Speaker 1: who was the And he was like, well, apparently you
- 7:12Speaker 1: gave the head of NBC a noogie. And he's not
- 7:18Speaker 1: really happy about it. He wasn't genuinely piste off, was he? No.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I don't think he was genuinely piste off. But he
- 7:23Speaker 1: stayed away from me. I remember remember he did come
- 7:27Speaker 1: to visit the set the hospital, and he kind of
- 7:29Speaker 1: stayed away from you because he was afraid of He
- 7:32Speaker 1: was very very afraid of me. Um, yeah, that's very funny.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Well what else do you? So? Then I remember that
- 7:38Speaker 1: night ended where we were in I wasn't there. You were,
- 7:42Speaker 1: this was you and Nelon. I wasn't there. Almost Almost
- 7:46Speaker 1: everybody ended up back in Bill and Christa's hotel room,
- 7:50Speaker 1: and we it's kind of it's sweet slash embarrassing. We
- 7:53Speaker 1: were so geeked out. We were like, let's watch our pilot.
- 7:56Speaker 1: So we were like it was like a whole bunch
- 7:57Speaker 1: of people and Kevin Kneelin, who I was a fan of,
- 8:00Speaker 1: and we just were watching the show and I don't know,
- 8:03Speaker 1: it was this sweet moment. I remember being like just
- 8:06Speaker 1: thinking like I can't believe this is happening. But then
- 8:09Speaker 1: the funny thing is you have a long time before
- 8:11Speaker 1: you start shooting. So we made the show, it got
- 8:13Speaker 1: picked up. My mom freaked out that I was like
- 8:15Speaker 1: that I quit my waiting tables job. She was like,
- 8:17Speaker 1: but what it's so long, what are you gonna do?
- 8:20Speaker 1: And I was like, I, Mom, I I I can
- 8:23Speaker 1: live off this pilot money for a long I was
- 8:25Speaker 1: living so frugally with with no money that I was like,
- 8:27Speaker 1: I can live off this pilot money for a long time,
- 8:29Speaker 1: So I'm gonna write. And that's in that time is
- 8:32Speaker 1: when I really finally sat down and put Garden State together,
- 8:35Speaker 1: and at my dining room table and kind of was like,
- 8:38Speaker 1: this is a sign I need to I have this
- 8:41Speaker 1: time that the universe gave me and I don't need
- 8:43Speaker 1: to wait tables and I'm gonna sit down and like
- 8:45Speaker 1: put this script together. That's awesome. Yeah, I went away.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I think I did a movie that year. I know
- 8:50Speaker 1: I did. I did something in between. But I remember
- 8:52Speaker 1: also calling Danny Rose, who was Bill's assistant at the time,
- 8:57Speaker 1: every day, like, so when do we start, man? Like
- 9:00Speaker 1: you know, he was like, and we're gonna start, probably
- 9:02Speaker 1: around June or July. I was like, dude, come on,
- 9:05Speaker 1: like like it was up to Danny, I love you, Like,
- 9:07Speaker 1: come on, man, we gotta start. We gotta we gotta
- 9:08Speaker 1: start soon. Man. I I had a baby mama at
- 9:12Speaker 1: the time, and we had two kids and one on
- 9:15Speaker 1: the way, and it was like, I remember being like,
- 9:18Speaker 1: I gotta get out of here, man, I gotta do something. Well.
- 9:20Speaker 1: You wanted to be working, you wanted to be like
- 9:22Speaker 1: doing it well. Yeah, And also we had this show
- 9:25Speaker 1: that was picked up, but we weren't gonna work from
- 9:29Speaker 1: you know, from May until July or you know that
- 9:32Speaker 1: it was. I remember, I couldn't figure out was it
- 9:34Speaker 1: like four months where we waited and waited. We went
- 9:37Speaker 1: back to work probably in the beginning of July, like
- 9:40Speaker 1: most shows do, uh something like that. I just remember
- 9:43Speaker 1: being at like four months or song. But anyway, it
- 9:46Speaker 1: was so exciting to finally start. And so this episode
- 9:49Speaker 1: that we're gonna talk about today one or two by
- 9:51Speaker 1: the way, just this just a little bit of oddness.
- 9:53Speaker 1: They label TV shows in the hundreds so you can
- 9:56Speaker 1: keep track of what season on. So a pilot would
- 9:59Speaker 1: be one oh one, right, and then episode two will
- 10:02Speaker 1: be one oh two, and then when you start season
- 10:04Speaker 1: two it's two oh one, two oh two, so that way,
- 10:06Speaker 1: you know, anyway, just a little bit of trivia for you.
- 10:09Speaker 1: So this is one oh two we're gonna be talking about,
- 10:11Speaker 1: and it's called my mentor. Okay, so the show starts
- 10:15Speaker 1: off and I remember singing this song for such a
- 10:19Speaker 1: long time, but it it's called good Time by Leroy.
- 10:25Speaker 1: If you guys want to remind yourselves of the song
- 10:29Speaker 1: and it was really you can sing it ahead. I'm
- 10:32Speaker 1: sure le Ro would be rolla. Uh. I got shot
- 10:37Speaker 1: down in southern Californy. I remember being like, that's a
- 10:44Speaker 1: dope song, and this is this is you know, for me,
- 10:48Speaker 1: Scrubs was a brand new experience when it came to
- 10:50Speaker 1: music because I didn't listen to music like this. I
- 10:53Speaker 1: listened to other types of music, and so this was
- 10:55Speaker 1: one of the first examples of me being of me
- 10:58Speaker 1: hearing this and being like wow, we and also also
- 11:01Speaker 1: seeing it for the first time too, and it being
- 11:03Speaker 1: like a music video. It was like, wow, we're making
- 11:05Speaker 1: music videos and also making a story about how look
- 11:10Speaker 1: In the beginning of the show, the hospitals in sync
- 11:13Speaker 1: because of this, this song that you're listening to in
- 11:15Speaker 1: your ear. We're on point. Everybody is doing their job.
- 11:19Speaker 1: And I also noticed that we we cut ahead a
- 11:21Speaker 1: little bit also, so you're no longer it's not the
- 11:24Speaker 1: very next day, you know, it's a few days in.
- 11:26Speaker 1: I've gotten, but I I just want to say, like
- 11:28Speaker 1: I got. I was watching this, and granted I haven't
- 11:30Speaker 1: watched this in twenty years. Most of these episodes I
- 11:32Speaker 1: don't know about you, but one of the things that's
- 11:33Speaker 1: fun about doing this podcast is, with a very few
- 11:36Speaker 1: exceptions maybe the musical episode or or or or ones
- 11:40Speaker 1: I directed, I directed seven or eight of them. I
- 11:42Speaker 1: think I never I only saw them once. So I
- 11:45Speaker 1: haven't seen this in twenty years, and it's so cool
- 11:47Speaker 1: to look back and Adam Bernstein directed this episode. That
- 11:50Speaker 1: was the same director who directed our pilot, and I
- 11:53Speaker 1: just remember thinking, like, you just said that, this was
- 11:55Speaker 1: so exciting. We were like the show was opening, like
- 11:58Speaker 1: this was stuff I hadn't really seen before and the show.
- 12:00Speaker 1: It just showed the creativity of Bill and and Adam
- 12:03Speaker 1: Ernstein and the fact that the show was opening with
- 12:05Speaker 1: this music video of how life in the hospital when
- 12:08Speaker 1: it's grooving is like a well oiled machine. I just
- 12:10Speaker 1: thought it was so clever. Yeah, I took notice of
- 12:13Speaker 1: that because I don't, you know, watching this again, is
- 12:16Speaker 1: it all seems a little brand new to me, And
- 12:18Speaker 1: I don't mean to We were a part of the
- 12:20Speaker 1: show and so it was just an amazing moment for me.
- 12:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna sound like, you know, I'm cocky and arrogant,
- 12:25Speaker 1: but you know, watching it, I was like, Wow, this
- 12:27Speaker 1: is a really really genius way of showing how awesome
- 12:32Speaker 1: or how in synct this hospital is. And for that,
- 12:35Speaker 1: I was like, I love the show even more now
- 12:37Speaker 1: you know, now that it's now that it's twenty years later,
- 12:39Speaker 1: I'm like, Wow, we really were innovative and we really
- 12:42Speaker 1: were different for prime time television. You know, regardless of
- 12:46Speaker 1: how many people watched the show at the time, you know,
- 12:49Speaker 1: it really still does hold up. Yeah, I have to say, um,
- 12:53Speaker 1: and you can be that's not you being arrogant because
- 12:55Speaker 1: we weren't the genius people behind writing it. Although yeah,
- 12:58Speaker 1: but we were a part of it. I know, I know,
- 12:59Speaker 1: but I'm saying you had a really big part about
- 13:01Speaker 1: you know, you did. You told the story. I know,
- 13:03Speaker 1: but I'm just saying like this, I think, you know,
- 13:06Speaker 1: as credit to Bill and all the writers, this was
- 13:08Speaker 1: just so original and and different and exciting. By the way,
- 13:12Speaker 1: how funny is it that I have a Walkman? It
- 13:14Speaker 1: must be two thousand one. I guess there was still
- 13:16Speaker 1: cassette Walkman. I would have thought it would have been
- 13:18Speaker 1: a disc but uh, I guess J D had a
- 13:20Speaker 1: had a mix on a cassette. Dude. You know, speaking
- 13:25Speaker 1: of Walkman's well week, we could talk about it after
- 13:28Speaker 1: season one, but I just remember you walking the streets
- 13:30Speaker 1: of New York City with your yellow Walkman, listening to
- 13:33Speaker 1: Michelle Branch. Every me when I closed my eyes, it's you,
- 13:41Speaker 1: I you see, that was my jam. I am not
- 13:43Speaker 1: duming about loving Michelle Branch. I remember you walking out
- 13:46Speaker 1: the house Walkman. It was a yellow walkman, the sony Walkman,
- 13:49Speaker 1: the dope Sony Walkman's that everybody if you had the
- 13:51Speaker 1: yellow sunny Walkman, you had the dope. You know. Everything
- 13:55Speaker 1: else was all right, but that was the one right.
- 13:57Speaker 1: And I remember you being like, well, I'm out, I'm
- 13:59Speaker 1: going to her so And that's when we were both
- 14:01Speaker 1: in New York living together and you were doing That's
- 14:04Speaker 1: the whole episode is Donald and I living together in Manhattan.
- 14:07Speaker 1: We rented aloft together. He was doing a movie and
- 14:10Speaker 1: I was doing Shakespeare in the Park and I would
- 14:12Speaker 1: go out and bought my head with my yellow walk
- 14:14Speaker 1: Man cranking YO every way to me when I closed
- 14:19Speaker 1: my eyes, it's you. I I'm not alone, dude. I
- 14:26Speaker 1: think it's very much j D that you had a
- 14:29Speaker 1: walkman with his cassette tape in it. Yeah. Um. I
- 14:32Speaker 1: noticed that the first exterior shot is still not our hospital.
- 14:35Speaker 1: They at two minutes in. They cut two, which was
- 14:38Speaker 1: an establishing shot from the pilot of me coming to
- 14:41Speaker 1: work for the first day. I think that's the very
- 14:42Speaker 1: that's the same shot, exact same shot they used in
- 14:44Speaker 1: the pilot of me showing up to work for the
- 14:46Speaker 1: first day. Do you remember going to that hospital and
- 14:49Speaker 1: us shooting a bunch of entrances like me and you
- 14:51Speaker 1: walking in, you walking in by yourself, you and Sarah
- 14:54Speaker 1: walking in. Remember all of that? Yeah? Yeah, and but yeah,
- 14:57Speaker 1: but that was that was for the pilot, right, No,
- 15:00Speaker 1: that was for the show itself. We did a bunch
- 15:03Speaker 1: of we did a bunch of versions of us walking
- 15:05Speaker 1: into this hospital, and some of it never got used.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Point at a certain point they just stopped using this
- 15:11Speaker 1: exterior because it was not our exterior at all. I
- 15:13Speaker 1: don't know what the hell that was. I noticed that
- 15:16Speaker 1: this episode has a lot to do with relationships, you
- 15:20Speaker 1: know what I mean, and how we all started off
- 15:23Speaker 1: kind of on rocky ground. You and I had the
- 15:25Speaker 1: same relationship, and you and the janitor have the same
- 15:28Speaker 1: relationship all the way through, but everyone else, no matter
- 15:32Speaker 1: how it's connected, has a different relationship in this episode.
- 15:36Speaker 1: At this point, you don't mind being in the friend
- 15:38Speaker 1: zone with Elliott, and as a matter of fact, he
- 15:40Speaker 1: thinks it's kind of cool that, you know, he has
- 15:42Speaker 1: a colleague from work that wants to hang out with him,
- 15:44Speaker 1: and and Turk Turk and collor on together. Yet you know,
- 15:48Speaker 1: what I mean, they're just starting their courtship, you and
- 15:51Speaker 1: Dr Cox, even though he's still giving you advice and
- 15:53Speaker 1: stuff like that. I also noticed that this is the
- 15:56Speaker 1: first time he calls you a woman's name too. I
- 15:59Speaker 1: think it's ready on where he catches them smoking. Yeah,
- 16:01Speaker 1: he calls you Susan. But this is you know, you
- 16:04Speaker 1: guys weren't in sync yet, so you don't really know
- 16:07Speaker 1: this guy and you're trying to get to know him,
- 16:09Speaker 1: or j D is trying to get to know him,
- 16:11Speaker 1: but they don't really know each other that well yet.
- 16:14Speaker 1: And uh, I'm jumping ahead. But that stuff in his
- 16:16Speaker 1: apartment is phenomenal. I going back and looking at it,
- 16:21Speaker 1: I was like I had no idea one that it
- 16:24Speaker 1: was this funny and two that it was this important,
- 16:27Speaker 1: you know what I mean, Like I had no clue
- 16:29Speaker 1: watching it back then. It kind of seems like a blur.
- 16:32Speaker 1: And you know, to be honest with you, most of
- 16:34Speaker 1: this episode, I don't remember. Yeah, there's things, there's things
- 16:37Speaker 1: I don't remember. I don't remember my It's funny. I
- 16:39Speaker 1: don't remember my head exploding. I mean really no, I don't.
- 16:43Speaker 1: I mean I remember, I don't remember doing that gag.
- 16:46Speaker 1: A lot of the stunts and stuff. I remember, I
- 16:48Speaker 1: remember falling over when he closes the door on my
- 16:50Speaker 1: on my leg and stuff, but the head exploding, I
- 16:52Speaker 1: don't remember shooting that, but I want to just pick
- 16:54Speaker 1: up what you said. I agree. A lot of it
- 16:56Speaker 1: is about establishing these relationships that we're gonna follow ultimately
- 17:00Speaker 1: for nine seasons. And also Judy really comes through in
- 17:04Speaker 1: this episode. Judy Ray says, she does some awesome work,
- 17:08Speaker 1: and it's establishing a really important theme that I think
- 17:13Speaker 1: comes across throughout the whole series is that we young
- 17:16Speaker 1: doctors are learning the importance of nurses because we come
- 17:19Speaker 1: out of medical school and we're super cocky and we
- 17:23Speaker 1: think we're gonna be badasses, but we're We learned right
- 17:26Speaker 1: off the bat, you know, not to be cheesy and
- 17:29Speaker 1: say the theme song. But we we can't do this
- 17:31Speaker 1: all on our own. We need the help of the nurses.
- 17:33Speaker 1: And every doctor we ever talked to and doing research
- 17:36Speaker 1: would say, yeah, I mean, the nurses run the show.
- 17:38Speaker 1: You you know, if you're if you're a layman and
- 17:39Speaker 1: you don't know, you have no idea how much work
- 17:42Speaker 1: and pressure and stress the nurses are all constantly under
- 17:46Speaker 1: and I was thinking about that now, especially with the
- 17:48Speaker 1: Corona crisis going on and watching all the news, and
- 17:51Speaker 1: I was really, I don't know, extra moved by in
- 17:53Speaker 1: this episode, seeing like that those nurses are just working
- 17:56Speaker 1: their asses off, and Sarah's character in particular needs to
- 17:59Speaker 1: learn that, like, no, no, we're a team and you
- 18:01Speaker 1: and you need to like check your your arrogance at
- 18:04Speaker 1: the door, and this is really about, like we're gonna
- 18:06Speaker 1: do this together and you need the nurses to be
- 18:09Speaker 1: on your side. Absolutely absolutely with that. I agree with
- 18:13Speaker 1: It's true nurses are the heart and soul of the hospital.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Just a piggyback on what you said about Sarah though,
- 18:19Speaker 1: A perfect example of someone who is not sincere about
- 18:22Speaker 1: their apology is when they apologize to you and then
- 18:25Speaker 1: it's followed with but just to be clear, you know
- 18:28Speaker 1: what I mean? And she totally does that in this episode,
- 18:32Speaker 1: and everything that happens to her after this is because
- 18:35Speaker 1: of how she just consistently put her foot in her
- 18:39Speaker 1: mouth throughout this episode. And I wonder if it's I
- 18:42Speaker 1: don't I don't remember if it carries on through this season,
- 18:45Speaker 1: but through the career of the show, through the show
- 18:49Speaker 1: her character always had the worst luck. Yeah, well again
- 18:52Speaker 1: that comes from her life too. I mean, Sarah is
- 18:55Speaker 1: a klutzy gal. She'll be the first to admit when
- 18:57Speaker 1: she comes on our show. And Sarah would come in
- 19:00Speaker 1: from the weekend every single time, without fail, every single
- 19:04Speaker 1: Monday morning, and you're like, you guys are not going
- 19:06Speaker 1: to believe what happened to me this weekend? And she
- 19:08Speaker 1: would go on to tell the craziest story that you
- 19:11Speaker 1: would be like a once in a in a two
- 19:13Speaker 1: year period to a normal person, something like this would
- 19:17Speaker 1: happen to you, and it would happen to Sarah every weekend,
- 19:19Speaker 1: and we'd be we'd be like, Sarah, you're you're putting
- 19:22Speaker 1: us on it. Can't that can have happened to you
- 19:23Speaker 1: this weekend, and you're not gonna believe it. And then
- 19:26Speaker 1: on top of that, and my keys fell and then
- 19:29Speaker 1: my wedding ring got lost, and I remember one story
- 19:33Speaker 1: was like a car lost control and started barreling down
- 19:37Speaker 1: a hill and her Beyonce at the time had to
- 19:41Speaker 1: jump in the car or grabbed a kid out of
- 19:44Speaker 1: the way or something like that. And then there was
- 19:47Speaker 1: then her wedding ring fell down a gutter, and every
- 19:51Speaker 1: every weekend it was like it was like here we go,
- 19:53Speaker 1: and Sarah would have a half hour story like you guys,
- 19:55Speaker 1: and she was always breathless. She was like, I'm not
- 19:57Speaker 1: gonna believe what donald. At two fifty four, one of
- 20:02Speaker 1: the most important characters in Scrub's history is introduced, a
- 20:06Speaker 1: character very near and dear to our hearts named Rowdy. Yes, absolutely,
- 20:10Speaker 1: I made that note. Also, holy cow, Rowdy that joke
- 20:15Speaker 1: when I when we were filming it, I was like,
- 20:16Speaker 1: this is the oddest thing I've ever done in my life.
- 20:20Speaker 1: This is a stuffed dog, and we're gonna pretend like
- 20:23Speaker 1: it's our pet. I think Bill will have to ask him.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Let's make a note to ask him when he comes on.
- 20:27Speaker 1: But I think that the idea was that some doctor
- 20:30Speaker 1: had told him that they never had time to have
- 20:33Speaker 1: a pet, especially when they were just starting out, because
- 20:36Speaker 1: their hours were so insane, and so he thought it
- 20:39Speaker 1: would be funny if if we got a taxes I
- 20:42Speaker 1: mean pet. I mean, that's the oddest thing I've ever
- 20:44Speaker 1: heard of in my life. I know, just I mean,
- 20:47Speaker 1: where do they find that thing? Exactly? Who in the
- 20:50Speaker 1: right mind was like, you know what, I think people
- 20:55Speaker 1: I do think it's a thing. I mean, I really think.
- 20:58Speaker 1: I'm sure out there are fans. Would you're listening, you
- 21:00Speaker 1: can write in and tell us. But I do think
- 21:02Speaker 1: there are people that taxidermy their pet. Okay, I don't understand, Joel,
- 21:07Speaker 1: have you ever heard of this? Joel's nodding, She has
- 21:09Speaker 1: heard of this, Barbara Streis. And Barbara Streis and I
- 21:13Speaker 1: believe his taxidermid and cloned her dogs. She clones her
- 21:18Speaker 1: dog because so much so I think she's on like
- 21:21Speaker 1: volume five. We have the technology to clone animals. Yeah,
- 21:25Speaker 1: your dog. You didn't know that. I did not know
- 21:28Speaker 1: that you can clone your dog. It all started with
- 21:30Speaker 1: Dolly the sheep. Remember they cloned the sheep Dolly that
- 21:33Speaker 1: I thought that was like only a couple of years ago.
- 21:35Speaker 1: And that was that was many years ago, and then
- 21:37Speaker 1: since since. Now, if you're Barbara streisand I'm sure it's
- 21:39Speaker 1: very expensive, you can clone your dog. So rowdy was taxidermy? Now?
- 21:44Speaker 1: I tried to get rowdy when the show was over,
- 21:47Speaker 1: and um, I listened, we did nine years I I
- 21:50Speaker 1: said to Bill, the only thing I want from everything
- 21:53Speaker 1: is rowdy. I think would be a wonderful souvenir for
- 21:56Speaker 1: me to have, and he said sure, and then the
- 21:58Speaker 1: people at Disney who owned the show, said no, you
- 22:01Speaker 1: can't have Rowdy. He belongs to Disney. And I pictured, like,
- 22:06Speaker 1: remember at the end of the Raiders of the Lost Arc,
- 22:08Speaker 1: how they put the Ark of the Covenant way in
- 22:11Speaker 1: the back. I pictured Rowdy going into like an endless
- 22:14Speaker 1: infinite of you know, umhouse warehouse in the back, and
- 22:20Speaker 1: like the forklift is going by like other taxidermy dogs,
- 22:23Speaker 1: and he's going like way, way way in the back,
- 22:26Speaker 1: the dog from Fraser's tax exactly. And I was just
- 22:30Speaker 1: so bummed. So when I made my film wish I
- 22:32Speaker 1: was here that you were in very very funnily as
- 22:35Speaker 1: the Ashton Martin dealer. I I said to Disney, Hey,
- 22:39Speaker 1: for the scrubs fans, I thought it'd be funny if
- 22:41Speaker 1: I put Rowdy like in the back of a scene,
- 22:42Speaker 1: like like an Easter egg for them to find. And
- 22:45Speaker 1: I said, kind of borrowed the dog just to put,
- 22:47Speaker 1: you know, just a little Easter egg for everybody. They said,
- 22:50Speaker 1: we will, but we're gonna send him with a bodyguard
- 22:53Speaker 1: because we're worried that you're gonna try and steal him
- 22:56Speaker 1: once he's delivered. So they sent Row with a handler.
- 23:01Speaker 1: They sent the taxi Durman dog with a handler. I
- 23:04Speaker 1: feel like that's understandable though, because I feel like if
- 23:06Speaker 1: they didn't send the dog with the handler somewhere along
- 23:08Speaker 1: the way, the dog would have got lost. I wasn't
- 23:10Speaker 1: going to steal the dog. I was gonna do my
- 23:12Speaker 1: best behaviors. He looked, he looked, he did not look
- 23:16Speaker 1: as good as he he looked thin. I remember. I
- 23:26Speaker 1: know it makes no sense, but I remember when he
- 23:28Speaker 1: showed up on set with his bodyguard, thinking like, he
- 23:31Speaker 1: doesn't look good. He's not being taken care of, not
- 23:33Speaker 1: being taken care of at all, Like one of his
- 23:35Speaker 1: paws was all JANKI and like I had to like
- 23:38Speaker 1: flew him. Do you remember the prop master who hit Rowdy.
- 23:49Speaker 1: I don't know if this is Scrubs Urban legend or not,
- 23:52Speaker 1: but go ahead, you tell it. Well, I just know
- 23:54Speaker 1: that we had a prop master who didn't work out. Yes,
- 23:57Speaker 1: he was. He was let go and get back at production.
- 24:02Speaker 1: He decided that he was going to hide Rowdy in
- 24:05Speaker 1: the ceiling. As the Scrubs Urban legend goes, he was
- 24:10Speaker 1: let go and he was angry about being let go.
- 24:13Speaker 1: And then you know, we were in the hospital that
- 24:14Speaker 1: had all those you know, lower tiled ceilings that you
- 24:17Speaker 1: see in hospitals, and apparently he he hid Rowdy up
- 24:21Speaker 1: in the ceiling tiles above the prop room. That's when,
- 24:27Speaker 1: by the way, that's when everyone started to be like, oh, ship,
- 24:29Speaker 1: if we lose Rowdy, this is bad, we need to
- 24:32Speaker 1: back up. And that's when they got Stephen, right. But
- 24:34Speaker 1: they had like three or four different rowdies though, so
- 24:36Speaker 1: there was just two. There was Rowdy and Stephen. Do
- 24:39Speaker 1: you remember, because there was a whole episode where where
- 24:41Speaker 1: Judy which where uh? And then I feel their balls
- 24:47Speaker 1: and then I feel their balls and I'm like, no,
- 24:49Speaker 1: that's Stephen. So in the world of scrubs, j D
- 24:52Speaker 1: had memorized the two different dog taxidermy dogs ball sacks. No,
- 24:57Speaker 1: that's Stephen. Um. So let's talk about our apartment set,
- 25:01Speaker 1: because this is the first time you're seeing our apartment.
- 25:04Speaker 1: This was built into the hospital. You know, normally you'd
- 25:07Speaker 1: have a set like this on a sound stage, but
- 25:10Speaker 1: in order for us to do the whole show at
- 25:12Speaker 1: this abandoned hospital, Cabinot McMullen, our genius production designer found
- 25:16Speaker 1: a way to uh, to build all of this into
- 25:19Speaker 1: I don't know what it was. It was like the
- 25:21Speaker 1: urgent care wing or something. No, if this wasn't an
- 25:24Speaker 1: urgent care wing, this was actually in the basement of
- 25:26Speaker 1: the hospital. Urgent care turned out to be the bar,
- 25:29Speaker 1: the bar and all of that stuff, right, but this
- 25:32Speaker 1: was this was actually right by the children's ward in
- 25:35Speaker 1: the hospital. So if you went, the knocked out some
- 25:37Speaker 1: walls and so this this was this was in you know,
- 25:39Speaker 1: this looks like pretty damn good apartment, but it was
- 25:41Speaker 1: in in the hospital. Yeah. It was also the loading
- 25:44Speaker 1: area also, so when they would cut and at night
- 25:48Speaker 1: when they wanted to bring things into the hospital. On
- 25:51Speaker 1: the other side of the wall, there was this big
- 25:53Speaker 1: garage door that you could open up and load all
- 25:56Speaker 1: the equipment. I remember it was always incredibly hot, right,
- 26:00Speaker 1: there was no it wasn't it wasn't meant to be
- 26:02Speaker 1: a sound stage with lights and everything. The whole hospital
- 26:05Speaker 1: was on fire because you know, you couldn't run air
- 26:08Speaker 1: condition when we're running like we had used to have
- 26:10Speaker 1: the tubes. Remember we would have the tube. They'd have
- 26:13Speaker 1: a tube wrangler. Even in our dressing rooms. They gave us,
- 26:16Speaker 1: like halfway through season one, they gave us our own
- 26:19Speaker 1: little air conditioning units to keep us cool because the
- 26:22Speaker 1: hospital got so hot in the summer. And but I remember,
- 26:26Speaker 1: so there was an air conditioning in the hospital, and
- 26:28Speaker 1: so they had these exterior units, and they had these tubes,
- 26:31Speaker 1: and I'm sure you've seen them. They were like, I
- 26:34Speaker 1: don't know, two feet in diameter. They'd be running everywhere
- 26:37Speaker 1: to try and make this comfortable, but they were. It
- 26:39Speaker 1: was it was someone's full time job to try and
- 26:41Speaker 1: wrangle the tubes. So what I noticed about this episode
- 26:45Speaker 1: I kept waiting for one line that made it into
- 26:50Speaker 1: the promo for the first episode but wasn't in the
- 26:53Speaker 1: first episode. And that's when Elliott says to me, Hey,
- 26:57Speaker 1: when did you meet Morgan Freeman. I laughed out loud
- 27:00Speaker 1: when that line came up. I mean, I knew it
- 27:02Speaker 1: was coming. And you know, there's some jokes in this that,
- 27:05Speaker 1: even though you know them, I just laughed out loud
- 27:07Speaker 1: when I heard that. It's just that was so freaking funny. Yeah,
- 27:10Speaker 1: I laughed my ass off, and you know it's really
- 27:12Speaker 1: my mom. But that's not even the funny part. The
- 27:16Speaker 1: funny part is she goes she has lovely freckles. I
- 27:20Speaker 1: love her freckles. Okay, So the next thing I wrote
- 27:28Speaker 1: down was Todd the introduction of Rob Machio and Rob
- 27:32Speaker 1: kind of is this guy right? I mean, not that
- 27:35Speaker 1: he was like me, not that he was a womanizer
- 27:38Speaker 1: like this, but he was kind of like a funny,
- 27:40Speaker 1: funny jockey kind of guy. Absolutely, he was very well.
- 27:44Speaker 1: He was pretty good athlete, you know what I mean.
- 27:46Speaker 1: He took really good care of his body and stuff
- 27:48Speaker 1: like that. I remember he told me he ate a
- 27:50Speaker 1: pint of Ben and Jerry's every day, which I always
- 27:52Speaker 1: found amazing because he would have to work out like
- 27:56Speaker 1: that much extra to work off a pint of Ben
- 27:58Speaker 1: and Jerry's a dead, so he must have worked out
- 28:00Speaker 1: of time to have his his Todd body. And he
- 28:02Speaker 1: was a lot older than us at the time to
- 28:05Speaker 1: this episode. No, he does look good. I don't remember.
- 28:11Speaker 1: He wasn't like like that old. But remember he was
- 28:13Speaker 1: older than us. He was a lot old. He was
- 28:15Speaker 1: like in his i'm gonna say thirties something. We were
- 28:18Speaker 1: twenty something and he was like thirty five, thirty six.
- 28:21Speaker 1: Rob's going to come on the podcast, and I really
- 28:24Speaker 1: enjoyed the fact that, you know, you do projects and
- 28:27Speaker 1: sometimes they don't really put the effort into develop you know,
- 28:31Speaker 1: these romantic relationships with the characters. And I really enjoyed
- 28:36Speaker 1: the effort put into Carla and Turk's courtship and how
- 28:41Speaker 1: you know what I mean, and how it became uh
- 28:44Speaker 1: storyline in the show. And it wasn't just something that
- 28:47Speaker 1: from the beginning they had chemistry and now they're dating.
- 28:50Speaker 1: You know, Turk had to work for it, Carla had
- 28:52Speaker 1: to work for it, and then and the ultimate thing
- 28:55Speaker 1: was at the end they you know, they're they're married
- 28:57Speaker 1: with kids and stuff like that. I love that we
- 29:00Speaker 1: see their growth from the pilot to this episode and
- 29:04Speaker 1: then as the show goes along. You guys were such
- 29:06Speaker 1: a good ying yang for each other too. I mean, you're,
- 29:09Speaker 1: you know, the sort of silly jockey surgeon and she's
- 29:13Speaker 1: just like so smart and and clever and and kind
- 29:18Speaker 1: of running the entire hospital. And I just thought the
- 29:21Speaker 1: way that they wrote your flirtation in your in your
- 29:23Speaker 1: chemistry was really and you guys performed it really, really well.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Can I tell him the story about what Casey first
- 29:28Speaker 1: said when I tried to set you up absolutely. We
- 29:31Speaker 1: were in the we were in a nightclub, Donald and
- 29:33Speaker 1: I and I see Casey Cobb, the beautiful Casey Cob
- 29:35Speaker 1: across the club, and she was with Jessica Simpson because
- 29:39Speaker 1: she was um she assistant. She was her assistant. And
- 29:43Speaker 1: now they're like best friends. And I knew them just
- 29:46Speaker 1: as acquaintances. And Donald had such a crosh on Casey.
- 29:49Speaker 1: He was just staring at her, like just like Doe Ide,
- 29:52Speaker 1: like I couldn't couldn't even think about other stuff, wouldn't
- 29:55Speaker 1: even wouldn't just like lost. So finally I got the
- 29:58Speaker 1: courage to go up to Casey and I'm like, hey,
- 30:01Speaker 1: um so trying to be the best wing man in
- 30:02Speaker 1: the world. And I'm like, hey, so, I appreciate you
- 30:05Speaker 1: for this. I was like, hey, my my buddy really
- 30:08Speaker 1: likes you. He really thinks you're really beautiful. And she goes,
- 30:11Speaker 1: who and I point over, like not over to Donald
- 30:15Speaker 1: and she goes then you have like nine kids, And
- 30:24Speaker 1: I always thought that was so funny cut to them
- 30:26Speaker 1: getting married in my backyard. At the time, I didn't
- 30:28Speaker 1: have nine kids. I only had four. I had had four.
- 30:31Speaker 1: But it was a funny sassy line from her and
- 30:34Speaker 1: your charms obviously worked, because, however, many years later they
- 30:37Speaker 1: were married in my backyard. Yeah, thanks to you being
- 30:41Speaker 1: a great wing man. It all started with a wingman line.
- 30:43Speaker 1: I remember me being like, yeah, will you go over
- 30:45Speaker 1: there and talk to her for me? And you're being like,
- 30:47Speaker 1: are you fucking kidding me? Go over yourself. I'm like,
- 30:50Speaker 1: oh no, no, no, no, no, no no, and you're like,
- 30:52Speaker 1: oh no, I remember you think I got the courage.
- 30:55Speaker 1: I got the No, you did get the courage. But
- 30:57Speaker 1: you went over there and then you came back and
- 30:58Speaker 1: I'm like, well, what did she say? Did I tell you?
- 31:03Speaker 1: You told me right No? No, no, you told me
- 31:06Speaker 1: right away. You're like, dude. She was like, doesn't he
- 31:08Speaker 1: have like nine kids? And I remember being like, oh no,
- 31:12Speaker 1: because I was like, that's what the ladies in California think,
- 31:17Speaker 1: that's what Hollywood thinks about me. I'm gonna dude with
- 31:19Speaker 1: all the kids. Well, it's funny that it's funny that
- 31:21Speaker 1: Like she wasn't like, oh no, he's not cute, or
- 31:24Speaker 1: oh no, he's not funny, or oh no, I don't
- 31:26Speaker 1: think he's funny on TV and movies. She was just like,
- 31:28Speaker 1: dott he had like nine keys with her son accident. Anyway,
- 31:33Speaker 1: they should be an inspiration to you men and women
- 31:35Speaker 1: out there who think you can't possibly get that person
- 31:39Speaker 1: you have a crush on, And they might even open
- 31:41Speaker 1: with a line equivalent to, doesn't he have like nine kids?
- 31:43Speaker 1: But if you just started persistent like Donald was, you
- 31:46Speaker 1: could one day get married in my backyard? All right?
- 31:48Speaker 1: Should we move on to We talked about Rob running
- 31:50Speaker 1: line because I always thought that was funny. So Rob
- 31:52Speaker 1: as a testament to Rob Maschio, who played Todd, he
- 31:55Speaker 1: would take it so seriously. And I'm not making fun
- 31:58Speaker 1: of Rob, because I get it. He didn't have a
- 31:59Speaker 1: lot to do in every episode, and he would always
- 32:01Speaker 1: make sure he was doing the best he could. And
- 32:04Speaker 1: but sometimes we'd look over and he would just be
- 32:06Speaker 1: running his one line over and over and over. Air
- 32:11Speaker 1: five five. Yeah, we just see him five. Like I'd
- 32:15Speaker 1: be like, Rob's over there running line Air five five,
- 32:19Speaker 1: high five, Air five, air five. And they really did hurt,
- 32:24Speaker 1: those those freaking Rob high fives. For what it's worth.
- 32:28Speaker 1: I was about to say, it seemed like you got
- 32:29Speaker 1: used to it after a while. No, they really hurt.
- 32:32Speaker 1: And the noise was added, but man, they really hurt
- 32:35Speaker 1: Sarah digging the grave at around eight minutes and forty
- 32:38Speaker 1: six seconds. That's become like a popular meme. I always see, like,
- 32:41Speaker 1: you know, when fans send us gifts and memes, and
- 32:43Speaker 1: I see him on the internet and on the interwebs.
- 32:45Speaker 1: That's what I always see, is it's funny watching it
- 32:48Speaker 1: when you go, oh, that's that meme I've seen before.
- 32:50Speaker 1: But that Sarah digging is one people use when like
- 32:52Speaker 1: they're putting their foot in their mouth digging the grave.
- 32:54Speaker 1: I forgot. I totally forgot about that, and so when
- 32:56Speaker 1: I saw it, it was really refreshing and really funny.
- 32:59Speaker 1: Huh yeah, it was very funny. And then they throw
- 33:01Speaker 1: dirt on he rose. That's a great joke. The next
- 33:06Speaker 1: thing I wrote down was, oh, that would you like
- 33:08Speaker 1: to play a game? Thing with the robot voice? Do
- 33:09Speaker 1: you remember what movie that's from? Of course, War Games? Yeah,
- 33:13Speaker 1: that's one of my favorite movies. And then another one
- 33:15Speaker 1: was from Buck Rogers BDBD BDBD Buck that's Buck Rogers,
- 33:21Speaker 1: but war games? Would you how about a Thermo nuclear war?
- 33:26Speaker 1: Remember that? How about? And yeah it's Matthew Roderick and
- 33:28Speaker 1: Ali Sitty. Of course I remember they're listening to this
- 33:30Speaker 1: podcast and you haven't seen War Games. I need you
- 33:33Speaker 1: to put it on after this podcast is over, because
- 33:36Speaker 1: it is such a good movie. Yeah, I mean you
- 33:38Speaker 1: don't have to put it on after the podcast, I think, yeah,
- 33:40Speaker 1: well not during, right. I remember being a kid in thinking, well,
- 33:44Speaker 1: everything Matthew Roderick did it when I was a kid,
- 33:46Speaker 1: I just thought was incredible. I just wanted to be
- 33:48Speaker 1: Matthew Broderick, especially in war games and war games in
- 33:51Speaker 1: in Farris Bieler's day, Yes, of course, I mean he's
- 33:53Speaker 1: kind of the same character, well kind of sort in
- 33:56Speaker 1: war Games he was like a kid that didn't have
- 33:59Speaker 1: a lot friends, and Farris Bueller he was the king
- 34:02Speaker 1: of such a good actor. Though in War Games, you know,
- 34:04Speaker 1: by the way, a little tribute, they made a sequel
- 34:07Speaker 1: to War Games that the writer director had nothing to
- 34:09Speaker 1: do with. Um what was it called? I don't know.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Joel will insert that here later in her voice. Four
- 34:17Speaker 1: Games The Dead Code, which came out in two thousand eight,
- 34:21Speaker 1: directed by Stuart Gillard. Yeah, but neither the two stars,
- 34:24Speaker 1: Aliet or Matthew Broddock were in it, right, that that
- 34:28Speaker 1: one's not the sequel is not Zack and Donald approved.
- 34:30Speaker 1: But the first movie is oh, I just the thirty three.
- 34:34Speaker 1: I just wanted to point out that's the very first
- 34:36Speaker 1: time we saw the Lounge, our Doctor's lounge where so
- 34:38Speaker 1: many of much of the show ends up taking place.
- 34:40Speaker 1: And the introduction of Doug. I didn't realize Doug got
- 34:43Speaker 1: introduced so early. Neither did I. I didn't realize that either.
- 34:47Speaker 1: I also remember that pac Man machine and how when
- 34:51Speaker 1: we were working that was an actual, real working pac
- 34:54Speaker 1: Man game and I would get kicked off a set.
- 34:57Speaker 1: I remember Franklin got Better and Scott Harris kicking me up.
- 35:01Speaker 1: These are were the first a d s on scrub
- 35:04Speaker 1: as System directors. Yeah, I remember them kicking me off
- 35:07Speaker 1: set because I kept trying to get the high score
- 35:09Speaker 1: on pac Man. I remember that pac Man game, and
- 35:11Speaker 1: I remember when they finally made a sort of pac
- 35:13Speaker 1: Man game didn't work, and I was so piste off.
- 35:15Speaker 1: At a certain point, they made it so it wouldn't
- 35:17Speaker 1: function even if you plugged it in. They got wise.
- 35:19Speaker 1: I loved that. I thought that was the coolest set
- 35:22Speaker 1: piece ever. And I was happy to see Doug because
- 35:25Speaker 1: he's very funny. And I remember in The Wizard of
- 35:28Speaker 1: ob episode which I directed, one of the funniest lines
- 35:32Speaker 1: he ever said, which was, dead people should be dead.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Remember when I come back to life, Why are you
- 35:37Speaker 1: hitting me? I thought you were dead. Why are you
- 35:39Speaker 1: hitting me? Because dead people should be dead. I would
- 35:44Speaker 1: have done the same thing. Okay, I thought at thirteen fifty,
- 35:46Speaker 1: there's a cool moment where, just stylistically, Adam Bernstein again
- 35:50Speaker 1: just sort of setting up the style of the show
- 35:52Speaker 1: where everyone's looking into the lens talking to me, and
- 35:55Speaker 1: then it comes to Judy and she does it, and
- 35:57Speaker 1: then she looks down and the camera pulls back and
- 36:00Speaker 1: next to her. Just stylistically, that was really kind of
- 36:04Speaker 1: a cool thing. That was pretty cool. Adam sort of
- 36:06Speaker 1: set the bar early on as the director of episode
- 36:09Speaker 1: one and two that that the camera was going to
- 36:12Speaker 1: be a character in the show, and every director that
- 36:14Speaker 1: came on after would add their own little bit of
- 36:17Speaker 1: style to it, especially in this first season, you know,
- 36:19Speaker 1: figuring out innovative ways to move the camera and to
- 36:22Speaker 1: do camera shots and trick shots. Adam really he did
- 36:26Speaker 1: us a great service, him and Bill by giving us something.
- 36:29Speaker 1: In hospital shows, it's really about the doctors and the
- 36:33Speaker 1: nurses and everything like that. Adam and Bill found a
- 36:36Speaker 1: way to make the hospital a character in the show.
- 36:39Speaker 1: And they found a way to do that early on,
- 36:42Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So when you're there, it's
- 36:44Speaker 1: never the same. It doesn't feel like, you know, I'm
- 36:47Speaker 1: watching hospital procedural or I'm watching It's something wacky about it.
- 36:52Speaker 1: There's something different about it, and I think that really
- 36:54Speaker 1: helped with telling the story. You know, j D and
- 36:59Speaker 1: his group of friends in this hospital. Yeah, and Adam.
- 37:02Speaker 1: I think Adam really set the tone for that, and
- 37:04Speaker 1: I remember him and of course the next few that
- 37:07Speaker 1: come up, you know, all all the directors in this
- 37:09Speaker 1: in this first batch. I think, um Mark Buckland's another
- 37:12Speaker 1: one coming up that really helps set the style and
- 37:14Speaker 1: the look. Some things were phased out, as I said, um,
- 37:18Speaker 1: the whib noises like when you go when you're waving
- 37:20Speaker 1: your hands. Yeah, so there was a lot of sound
- 37:23Speaker 1: effects obviously, but that whip thing is like one thing
- 37:25Speaker 1: they toned down. This high school fantasy that starts at
- 37:28Speaker 1: fifteen minutes or so. It's so funny, so well done,
- 37:31Speaker 1: don't you think hilarious? Dude. The fact that they put
- 37:33Speaker 1: the pimples on her and the braces and Kur and
- 37:36Speaker 1: band stuff, and then all of us being like the
- 37:38Speaker 1: cool kids and stuff like that. You know, Alomba is
- 37:43Speaker 1: I guess really the only nurse from the pilot that
- 37:47Speaker 1: made it all the way through, because there's people that
- 37:50Speaker 1: surrounded Judy's where I'm like, I don't recognize any of
- 37:53Speaker 1: these people. I recognize a few. I recognize a couple
- 37:55Speaker 1: of the women. By the way, none of the people
- 37:57Speaker 1: who became like major back around people that we focused
- 38:01Speaker 1: on or are in any of these episodes would be
- 38:03Speaker 1: interesting when we as we go to watch it will
- 38:04Speaker 1: be trut to see when we see their first appearances, Like, Yeah,
- 38:06Speaker 1: I saw one dude who was this bald guy and
- 38:09Speaker 1: he kind of looks like colonel doctor but he's a
- 38:11Speaker 1: bald headed guy and he shows up in so many
- 38:13Speaker 1: scenes like back to back to back to back to back.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Let's talk about how in coxs apartment that looks like
- 38:19Speaker 1: a set. Dude, No, it's so bad. First of all,
- 38:23Speaker 1: not to dis cabin, because I'm sure that at this
- 38:25Speaker 1: time they were already out of money, but this is
- 38:28Speaker 1: the only set so far that looks like they just
- 38:30Speaker 1: put a couch into hospital, into my hospital, Like there's
- 38:34Speaker 1: so many things on the walls that are like why
- 38:36Speaker 1: is there a speaker on the side of his wall
- 38:38Speaker 1: at his house? Not only that, why is that big
- 38:41Speaker 1: window there that goes nowhere? I know it's so funny,
- 38:45Speaker 1: and then we can we justify it by making a
- 38:47Speaker 1: joke about like, oh, your apartment is so cold. But
- 38:50Speaker 1: I was like, wow, man, they I think this is
- 38:52Speaker 1: This was the first moment like where does he Where
- 38:54Speaker 1: does he live? But he lived in the hospital. Yeah.
- 38:58Speaker 1: I love this scene between me and Johnny And this
- 38:59Speaker 1: is one of the on his lines of scrubs. I remember,
- 39:01Speaker 1: do you want to be the big spoon of the
- 39:02Speaker 1: little spoon? I had no idea what spooning was. I
- 39:04Speaker 1: knew that you could spoon, like I know what spooning was,
- 39:07Speaker 1: but I didn't know that you could be there was
- 39:09Speaker 1: a big spoon and a little spoon. I had no
- 39:12Speaker 1: idea that that existed, and that kind of was like
- 39:15Speaker 1: little spoon. That whole scene is hilarious, you know what
- 39:19Speaker 1: I mean, Even though when he kicks you out and
- 39:21Speaker 1: he gives you the lesson and he's like, now come here,
- 39:24Speaker 1: let me give you a hug, and you're like, get
- 39:26Speaker 1: the funk out. Of here, and he's like, come on,
- 39:27Speaker 1: come on, come on, give me a hug. And he's
- 39:28Speaker 1: like me uh, and he's like, come on, give me
- 39:30Speaker 1: a hug, and you go up for the huggy. I
- 39:32Speaker 1: gotta get out of here. Very funny, very He's so
- 39:35Speaker 1: good and I really just so good. I really just
- 39:37Speaker 1: liked that scene between the two of us. It really
- 39:39Speaker 1: kind of showed the dance with Johnny Sea where it
- 39:41Speaker 1: was going to be like, you know, fucking with me
- 39:43Speaker 1: a ton and really, but then eventually there'd always be
- 39:46Speaker 1: a lesson underneath it, and he'd always drop in and
- 39:49Speaker 1: be a good mentor. I mean that's when this is
- 39:51Speaker 1: called my mentor. So he's doesn't want me mo mentor,
- 39:54Speaker 1: doesn't mere mentor. And in the end he finally drops
- 39:56Speaker 1: some knowledge like you can't save these people. All you
- 39:59Speaker 1: can do is do your asked. You're not responsible for
- 40:01Speaker 1: changing people's habits. You can't make someone who's gonna smoke
- 40:04Speaker 1: not smoke. And I know that this is something and
- 40:07Speaker 1: that doctors must deal with all the time. They wish
- 40:09Speaker 1: they could make their patients stop eating that fast food,
- 40:12Speaker 1: They wish they could make their patients stop smoking. Whatever
- 40:14Speaker 1: it is Johnny's trying to teach j D early on,
- 40:17Speaker 1: like you don't have control over over that. You can
- 40:19Speaker 1: only do what you can do. I had made a
- 40:21Speaker 1: note on that. Also, when doctors come into the hospital
- 40:25Speaker 1: for the first few months, maybe even more than that,
- 40:30Speaker 1: they take everything so personal. And that's great to have
- 40:35Speaker 1: that type of attitude, but if you continue that type
- 40:40Speaker 1: of attitude, it's going to be really hard for you
- 40:43Speaker 1: to make it as a doctor, you know what I mean.
- 40:45Speaker 1: And that's what j D had to experience, you know
- 40:50Speaker 1: what I mean. J D cared so much about Will
- 40:53Speaker 1: and you know, and Will quitting his cigarette addiction, and
- 40:58Speaker 1: he thought that that was a bonding experience between him
- 41:02Speaker 1: and Dr Cox. You know, dude, I know you're thinking
- 41:04Speaker 1: about it, and let's talk it over so we can
- 41:07Speaker 1: come back in tomorrow with the game plan and stop
- 41:09Speaker 1: this dude from smoking cigarettes. And at the end of
- 41:13Speaker 1: the day, that wasn't your job. Your job is to
- 41:17Speaker 1: test and treat, you know what I mean. That was
- 41:20Speaker 1: j D's job. Let's test him and see what ailments
- 41:23Speaker 1: he has, and any ailment we find, we're gonna treat
- 41:27Speaker 1: and try and save him from all of this extracurricular
- 41:32Speaker 1: activity of you giving a crap about you know, how
- 41:35Speaker 1: he got here. That's not in the cards because at
- 41:38Speaker 1: the end of the day, if this person does pass away,
- 41:41Speaker 1: how do you develop the strength to get up again?
- 41:45Speaker 1: If you were so so invested in this person's well being.
- 41:50Speaker 1: And as much as that sucks to hear, that's how
- 41:54Speaker 1: doctors have to be. That's how nurses have to be.
- 41:56Speaker 1: They're gonna deal with death, They're gonna deal with life,
- 41:59Speaker 1: they're gonna deal with disease, They're going to deal with
- 42:01Speaker 1: all of these things. And how do you put up
- 42:04Speaker 1: a shield so at the end of the day, if
- 42:08Speaker 1: you do lose somebody, you can come back the next
- 42:11Speaker 1: day and do your job, you know what I mean?
- 42:14Speaker 1: And that was what Cox was trying to prepare j
- 42:17Speaker 1: D for early on, early on in the show, because
- 42:19Speaker 1: like he's like, you need to get used to this.
- 42:21Speaker 1: This is not You're not gonna be able to save
- 42:23Speaker 1: every single person and change all their habits. By the way,
- 42:26Speaker 1: I'm looking at the credits and I see that John
- 42:28Speaker 1: Deucey's who was the guest star as Will his character's
- 42:30Speaker 1: name Will Forte. And was there some connection to Will Forte?
- 42:35Speaker 1: Did someone wasn't so. I think one of our writers
- 42:38Speaker 1: was partnered with Will four Day. I do believe you're right.
- 42:40Speaker 1: I was Swarts Shorts. Yeah. Speaking of Mike schwartzach the
- 42:45Speaker 1: show that I'm that I shot all last year Emergence,
- 42:49Speaker 1: which is on ABC, which is another Disney show. The
- 42:52Speaker 1: creators of that show wrote on ED back in the
- 42:55Speaker 1: day with a young Mike Schwartz. That's not musty where
- 42:59Speaker 1: Bill found him. Yeah, ED came first because I remember
- 43:02Speaker 1: when the show ED was on and Tom Kavanaugh's picture
- 43:06Speaker 1: went up on billboards and I still didn't have a job.
- 43:09Speaker 1: My mom would call me and be like, there is
- 43:11Speaker 1: a show where this guy looks exactly like you and
- 43:17Speaker 1: and he's on billboards everywhere. And I remember thinking like, great, yeah,
- 43:21Speaker 1: that's not me, Mom. It's kind of It's kind of
- 43:23Speaker 1: crazy how he came on to be a brother later on.
- 43:26Speaker 1: I know, I wish they I wish they would have
- 43:29Speaker 1: had I wish you would have had two brothers. I
- 43:31Speaker 1: wish it would have been him and then Dak Shephard
- 43:33Speaker 1: as your other brother. I know, I get this thing.
- 43:35Speaker 1: I don't know what it is about my face, but
- 43:38Speaker 1: people tell me I look like so many different people. Obviously,
- 43:42Speaker 1: Dak Shepherd's the most common these days, but I used
- 43:45Speaker 1: to get Tom Kavanaugh and Ray Romano. Yeah I remember
- 43:49Speaker 1: Ray Romano. Yeah yeah. I Finally early on when our
- 43:52Speaker 1: show launched, everyone was saying that I was like young
- 43:55Speaker 1: Ray Romano, and I remember Ray. I met Ray Romano
- 43:58Speaker 1: like on a press line somewhere, and he looked at
- 44:00Speaker 1: me and he was like, oh, it's like looking in
- 44:03Speaker 1: a mirror. I couldn't remember if he was finding the comparison. Funny,
- 44:18Speaker 1: can you tell the story about how when we went
- 44:20Speaker 1: to Vegas and I was in the bathroom and I
- 44:23Speaker 1: was washing my hands and I left and the guy goes, oh,
- 44:26Speaker 1: you know who that was, right? Do you remember the story? Unfortunately,
- 44:29Speaker 1: I remember the story, but I forgot the punchline, So
- 44:31Speaker 1: you're gonna have to tell it. So we're in Vegas
- 44:33Speaker 1: and we're hanging out. It's us, Josh Rayden, our Buddy
- 44:37Speaker 1: Carey Brothers, and Michael Weston, who also at some point
- 44:42Speaker 1: was on the show. Ye came on the show as
- 44:44Speaker 1: private dancer, right right, right, But Carrie and Josh both
- 44:48Speaker 1: had music on the show, if I remember correctly, right, yes, right,
- 44:52Speaker 1: So we're all in Vegas. We go to Vegas. It's
- 44:54Speaker 1: our first time going to Vegas to as a group,
- 44:57Speaker 1: and we're you know, we're very young, and we've we've
- 45:00Speaker 1: got a little bit of money at this point to
- 45:02Speaker 1: spend in Vegas. We had a really good time. We
- 45:05Speaker 1: stayed at the MGM Grand They hooked it up for us.
- 45:07Speaker 1: The story, as I even corrected, I was in the bathroom.
- 45:09Speaker 1: Donald in the bathroom and Donald washed his hands and
- 45:11Speaker 1: then he left and the person that was in there
- 45:14Speaker 1: said to his friend, you know who that was? And
- 45:16Speaker 1: in my mind, I'm thinking, like Donald getting recognized, and
- 45:20Speaker 1: the guy goes who and he goes, that was Erkele.
- 45:23Speaker 1: That was fucking Rkle, dude, And they were like freaking
- 45:27Speaker 1: out that Erkel had been in the bathroom with them.
- 45:29Speaker 1: I love that to this day, I you know, to
- 45:33Speaker 1: this day. Anytime I could be mentioned in the same
- 45:36Speaker 1: story as Jalio White, Tay Digs, all these people who
- 45:39Speaker 1: were like, you know, iconic for being really good at
- 45:44Speaker 1: playing a character, or you know, Julia went on to
- 45:47Speaker 1: do Stefan Urkle, which was really freaking awesome and it
- 45:50Speaker 1: showed his range as an actor and everything like that.
- 45:53Speaker 1: Anytime I could be mentioned in the same story. Like
- 45:55Speaker 1: one time quest Love hit me up. It was like, Yo,
- 45:57Speaker 1: somebody said I looked like you, and I was like,
- 46:00Speaker 1: that's the best day ever, dude. I remember when we
- 46:03Speaker 1: first became friends and we'd go out and about no
- 46:05Speaker 1: one knew who I was at all. But some people
- 46:07Speaker 1: would would know Donald's name. But a lot of people
- 46:09Speaker 1: would just be like, yo, yo clueless, clueless. They would
- 46:13Speaker 1: just yell clueless at you right all the time, YO clueless, clueless,
- 46:18Speaker 1: Yo clueless. And then and then they point to you
- 46:20Speaker 1: and be like YO clueless by his friend, Yo clueless,
- 46:23Speaker 1: but his friend look at clueless. His friend's clueless and
- 46:26Speaker 1: clueless his friends. That story has a horrible ending, though, man,
- 46:30Speaker 1: it has a horrible well. The ending is, you know
- 46:32Speaker 1: you did Garden State and all of a sudden he
- 46:33Speaker 1: became Zach Braff and people are like, oh, ship Zach Braff,
- 46:37Speaker 1: and look who he's hanging out with. He's got clueless
- 46:38Speaker 1: with him. That's not what happened. That is what happened.
- 46:43Speaker 1: That's funny. I dis remember, you know. It's funny the
- 46:46Speaker 1: thing the things that people yell at you on the street,
- 46:48Speaker 1: like you don't get clueless anymore. I'm sure, but no.
- 46:51Speaker 1: But I get a lot of black scrub thanks the
- 46:52Speaker 1: family guy. I get a lot of black scrubs and
- 46:55Speaker 1: get scrubs and you know, yeah, I got I get
- 46:58Speaker 1: where turk all the time. Sometimes people will know my
- 47:01Speaker 1: name and they just talked to me right away, and
- 47:03Speaker 1: I I can't figure out if I know them in
- 47:05Speaker 1: real life or they just know me as an actor.
- 47:09Speaker 1: And especially when I when I'm in New York because
- 47:11Speaker 1: I lived there part of the year and people just
- 47:14Speaker 1: walking on the street just start talking to you, and
- 47:16Speaker 1: you don't want to be I don't want to be
- 47:17Speaker 1: rude at all, but I'm trying to think, like do
- 47:19Speaker 1: I know this person or do they just know my name.
- 47:22Speaker 1: One time I was parallel parking in Manhattan and it
- 47:24Speaker 1: was going horribly and some guy walks by. He's like,
- 47:28Speaker 1: you're killing it, braf, and I just couldn't remember. Like,
- 47:34Speaker 1: I just was like, do I know that I don't
- 47:35Speaker 1: think I know that person. They just give me ship.
- 47:38Speaker 1: That happened to me recently at Starbucks before this whole
- 47:40Speaker 1: quarantine thing happened. I was at Starbucks and a guy
- 47:43Speaker 1: comes up to me, goes, Donald, how you been man.
- 47:45Speaker 1: I'm like, hey, man, how's it going. He's like, you know,
- 47:48Speaker 1: I'm good. And then I realized, so I don't know
- 47:50Speaker 1: this guy. I was like, wait, how do how do
- 47:51Speaker 1: we know each other? And he says, oh, dude, I'm
- 47:53Speaker 1: just such a huge fan of yours. And I remember thinking,
- 47:56Speaker 1: holy cow, that's how you get caught out there. Dude,
- 47:59Speaker 1: from here on out, if somebody says to me, Donald,
- 48:02Speaker 1: how's it going and I don't know who they are,
- 48:04Speaker 1: I'm not going to be embarrassed anymore because that's that
- 48:06Speaker 1: moment of embarrassment where you're like, wait, because I don't
- 48:11Speaker 1: want to want to hurt it, hurt anybody's feelings. Oh.
- 48:15Speaker 1: I thought of another person that I used to really
- 48:17Speaker 1: get a lot before. Was Anne Hathaway's boyfriend that went
- 48:21Speaker 1: to jail. Do you remember that guy? I don't. He
- 48:24Speaker 1: was involved in some I think it was business or
- 48:26Speaker 1: money crime something, but he went to jail and I
- 48:29Speaker 1: walk in. This is years ago. I walk into a
- 48:31Speaker 1: coffee bean and I walk in and I see our
- 48:34Speaker 1: senior Hall and he's looking right at me, and I
- 48:36Speaker 1: don't think I don't remember ever met our senior Hall,
- 48:39Speaker 1: but I was kind of geeked out because I loved
- 48:41Speaker 1: Senior Hall, and he kind of smiled at me. He
- 48:43Speaker 1: brought me over to the end of the counter where
- 48:45Speaker 1: they delivered the coffees, and there you can hear the music.
- 48:49Speaker 1: Oh is Eddie Murphy standing there? And I'm like having
- 48:52Speaker 1: one of the greatest moments in my life. And now
- 48:54Speaker 1: when I meet famous people, I can normally hold it together. Yeah,
- 48:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna keep it. I remember saying to you one time, dude,
- 49:00Speaker 1: how do you do this? Man? Like that's freaking Benjamin
- 49:03Speaker 1: Bratt right there, and you're not even geeking out. Really,
- 49:05Speaker 1: You're just like it's not even up and You're like,
- 49:08Speaker 1: I don't, I don't, I don't geek out. Well, I
- 49:09Speaker 1: can hold it together sometimes, but when I met Eddie Murphy,
- 49:12Speaker 1: I mean I just started gushing. I was like, Eddie,
- 49:14Speaker 1: I'm so sorry, but I just want to say that,
- 49:16Speaker 1: like you were like such an inspiration to me, and
- 49:18Speaker 1: and and and and and Beverly Hill's cop I I
- 49:21Speaker 1: gotta tell you it's I use it as an example
- 49:23Speaker 1: all the time because like the bad guys were like
- 49:25Speaker 1: legitimately scary, but and he goes, he goes, who bad
- 49:28Speaker 1: that bad guys weren't scary? Who Victor Maitland? And I
- 49:31Speaker 1: was like, oh my god, Eddie Murphy just said Victor
- 49:34Speaker 1: Maitland to me in a coffee shop. My life has
- 49:36Speaker 1: peaked right now. He's like Victor Maitland and I'm like, no, not,
- 49:39Speaker 1: I'm like Victor Maitland. Like well, I was like the Henchman.
- 49:41Speaker 1: He goes, yeah, the Henchman was scary. And then he
- 49:43Speaker 1: interrupts me and he goes stares at me, and he goes,
- 49:46Speaker 1: anybody ever tell you look like Anne Hathaway his boyfriend
- 49:48Speaker 1: and went to jail. And I said what. He goes, yeah,
- 49:54Speaker 1: because I was watching the news and I was like,
- 49:56Speaker 1: that looks like the dude from Scrubs. And I thought,
- 50:03Speaker 1: this is the most surreal moment of my entire life.
- 50:06Speaker 1: Eddie Murphy is telling recognize a he knows who I
- 50:09Speaker 1: am because he knows what Scrubs is, and be he's
- 50:11Speaker 1: trying to figure out if I've been told before that
- 50:13Speaker 1: I looked like and Hathaway's boyfriend. By the way, the
- 50:16Speaker 1: last part of that story I gotta tell you because
- 50:18Speaker 1: it's so funny. I go to The Layman's Rob premiere
- 50:21Speaker 1: the movie premiere, and because I love Layman's rob as
- 50:23Speaker 1: you know, and drink with me. Two dayss gone more?
- 50:29Speaker 1: All right, So, by the way, we'll do a special
- 50:32Speaker 1: episode of this podcast where we just sing anyway, I'm
- 50:36Speaker 1: walking and I know and Hathaway as an acquaintance. And
- 50:40Speaker 1: but and this is right around when all that ship
- 50:41Speaker 1: went down with her boyfriend and I'm I'm walking towards
- 50:45Speaker 1: her to say congratulations, and her father stands up and
- 50:50Speaker 1: like gives me this look like I'm gonna kill this mother.
- 50:55Speaker 1: He's got the balls to crash my daughter's mirror. I'm
- 51:01Speaker 1: gonna strangle him. And I got within ten feet of
- 51:05Speaker 1: the dude and then his face just fucking broke anyone
- 51:09Speaker 1: like side of breath relief and realized that it was me,
- 51:11Speaker 1: not the ex boyfriend. Oh man, Now you know what
- 51:14Speaker 1: black people go through all the time. All right, I
- 51:19Speaker 1: think we have a caller, right Joel, We do. Welcome Kayla.
- 51:24Speaker 1: Thanks for being here. What's up? Kayla? Hi? Kayla? Hi?
- 51:29Speaker 1: Are you? I'm good? They're crazy the good. We hear you.
- 51:35Speaker 1: It's time. Thank you so much for being our second
- 51:38Speaker 1: ever caller. We're very, very excited to have you. We
- 51:41Speaker 1: can answer any question you have about anything, well, almost
- 51:44Speaker 1: any question, but mostly Scrubs related. That's about it. That's here, Okay.
- 51:49Speaker 1: I guess like my first question would be a lot
- 51:52Speaker 1: of shows that premiered at that time had that awkward
- 51:55Speaker 1: first season, but for whatever reason for me a viewer,
- 52:00Speaker 1: Scrubs didn't have that. Was that something that you guys
- 52:03Speaker 1: all felt as a cat Uh, speaking from I was
- 52:07Speaker 1: just happy to be on television. H When I look
- 52:10Speaker 1: back at it now, absolutely, you're absolutely right. Scrubs started
- 52:14Speaker 1: off at a high point and it just kept going
- 52:16Speaker 1: up from there. Uh, as far as storytelling goes, and
- 52:19Speaker 1: that's really you know, you gotta give props to Bill
- 52:22Speaker 1: Lawrence and his team of writers. Also, you know the crew,
- 52:26Speaker 1: and you know how they were in line and just
- 52:28Speaker 1: ready to go once we started with so many shows.
- 52:31Speaker 1: I agree, Kayla, you go, um, you can't help but go,
- 52:35Speaker 1: especially with pilots. I'm always saying to friends and and
- 52:38Speaker 1: when you know, when you recommend the show, you're like,
- 52:40Speaker 1: give it like three episodes because you know the pilots
- 52:42Speaker 1: good and everything, But you know there's kinds of pilots
- 52:44Speaker 1: you're so hard you have to introduce so much, so
- 52:47Speaker 1: many characters, and and the tone and the style and
- 52:50Speaker 1: the it's so hard to do a pilot have it worked.
- 52:52Speaker 1: So I guess you guys have said this to people too.
- 52:54Speaker 1: You're always like, just give you a couple of episodes.
- 52:56Speaker 1: Whereas I agree, build building such an amazing job with
- 52:58Speaker 1: with the pilot and the first few episodes that he
- 53:01Speaker 1: was able to in twenty three minutes an episode, be
- 53:04Speaker 1: able to just launch it. I'm just looking at the
- 53:06Speaker 1: my screen. This one was like twenty one minutes or so.
- 53:09Speaker 1: It's just amazing how much got crammed in and beautifully
- 53:12Speaker 1: woven together, you know, being on the show. I hate
- 53:15Speaker 1: to brag about the show, but I think that's what
- 53:16Speaker 1: made the show so great, you know what I mean.
- 53:18Speaker 1: It's like, you know, you didn't have to say give
- 53:20Speaker 1: it two or three episodes. By the third episode, though,
- 53:24Speaker 1: we were really on fire. You know, we were really
- 53:26Speaker 1: telling great stories. But we were telling great stories before that.
- 53:30Speaker 1: It just, you know, it just elevated even higher after
- 53:34Speaker 1: episode three because we found our groove. I love that
- 53:36Speaker 1: because I remember my mom asked me a couplice, like
- 53:38Speaker 1: I need to start something, and I said, you should
- 53:41Speaker 1: start scrubs from the beginning, because I know you came
- 53:43Speaker 1: in at this and pieces. She's like, so you don't
- 53:45Speaker 1: have an episode for me to start on. You start
- 53:47Speaker 1: from episode one. I love that. That's great, Kayla. Do
- 53:51Speaker 1: you have another question? Just because we're all in isolation
- 53:54Speaker 1: and have nothing to do but to talk to you? Um, so,
- 53:58Speaker 1: I guess what's so great? Which is funny? You say?
- 54:01Speaker 1: Episode three? Episode two is probably my favorite because so
- 54:05Speaker 1: many of the show's major relationships are established in that episode.
- 54:09Speaker 1: So was that chemistry instantaneous or did that come from
- 54:13Speaker 1: filming episodes over the coming week? You know, it's crazy?
- 54:15Speaker 1: Is that? That's how we opened the show today pretty much.
- 54:18Speaker 1: We talked about how episode two it really sets off
- 54:24Speaker 1: the journey that a lot of these characters are going
- 54:26Speaker 1: to have together. Carla and Turk, Carla and Elliott, everybody
- 54:31Speaker 1: in the hospital and Dr Kelso, j D and Cox,
- 54:36Speaker 1: all of these stories are really starting to bubble at
- 54:39Speaker 1: this point, you know what I mean? Or starting to
- 54:41Speaker 1: you know whatever? Sure if I don't, I don't know
- 54:46Speaker 1: if we should use gurgle? No, Like you know, when
- 54:49Speaker 1: like a boiling water starts to come to a gurgle,
- 54:51Speaker 1: isn't that the word. No, it's not. That's not what
- 54:54Speaker 1: gurgle means. Not gargle and gurgle are different. I just
- 54:58Speaker 1: like saying gurgle. Another big thing was that we all
- 55:01Speaker 1: genuinely got along. Like you know, a lot of shows,
- 55:05Speaker 1: you're meeting all these new people. Just like any job,
- 55:06Speaker 1: there's mean people you don't like, there's people that you
- 55:08Speaker 1: do like. We all really clicked, like you know, and
- 55:12Speaker 1: I'm sure Donald and I have both been on projects
- 55:15Speaker 1: since then where the magic wasn't there. This was a
- 55:18Speaker 1: project where like all those people we were and the
- 55:20Speaker 1: writers and Bill and the directors, the crew, we were
- 55:24Speaker 1: all friends and we were all hanging out. We would
- 55:26Speaker 1: all go out together. We just really genuinely loved each other.
- 55:29Speaker 1: And a testament to the seven main characters in the show,
- 55:33Speaker 1: we all you know, over nine years. We we had
- 55:35Speaker 1: our moments. Of course, just like a family, you you'd
- 55:37Speaker 1: get an arguments over things. But but for a the time,
- 55:41Speaker 1: we all got along really, really, really well. And I
- 55:43Speaker 1: think that that shows in the relationships in the in
- 55:46Speaker 1: the show. Because we we loved each other, we rooted
- 55:48Speaker 1: for each other. If Donald had a moment where he
- 55:51Speaker 1: was killing it, like we weren't trying to upstage each other,
- 55:53Speaker 1: like go man, go be that. You're killing it right
- 55:56Speaker 1: now like we were rooting each other on you know,
- 55:58Speaker 1: we definitely where each other's biggest fans at the time
- 56:02Speaker 1: for sure. Well, thank you, Kayla, thank you for calling in,
- 56:05Speaker 1: and thank you for for being our second ever caller.
- 56:08Speaker 1: Thank you guys so much for having me. Thank you.
- 56:10Speaker 1: Stay safe out there. Where are you calling from? Are
- 56:13Speaker 1: you in California? Are you you're in Atlanta? Yeah? Okay,
- 56:17Speaker 1: we're all lockdown. Yeah, Well, stay safe, Kayla. And I
- 56:26Speaker 1: want to say, if you want to call in to
- 56:28Speaker 1: our podcast here, you're gonna send an email two scrubs
- 56:33Speaker 1: I heart at gmail dot com. Is that right, Joel? Okay,
- 56:37Speaker 1: scrubs I heart at gmail dot com. And we're gonna
- 56:41Speaker 1: take a caller every week. I just want to thank
- 56:44Speaker 1: everybody for listening. Um, please hit us up on our
- 56:47Speaker 1: on our social media on on We're both on Instagram
- 56:50Speaker 1: and Twitter, and you can ask us questions. Tell us
- 56:53Speaker 1: what you what you like, want you want more of?
- 56:56Speaker 1: We want you to be have audience participations, So tell
- 56:58Speaker 1: us like things that you want to constructive criticism, right, Donald,
- 57:03Speaker 1: you don't necessarily have to criticize us well, constructive criticism.
- 57:06Speaker 1: You could be like, I'd like to hear more about this,
- 57:08Speaker 1: or I'd like to hear more about that. But don't
- 57:10Speaker 1: all of a sudden get on there and be like
- 57:12Speaker 1: just hating. Well, people are gonna do that anyway. Donald
- 57:14Speaker 1: is the interwebs. Nobody likes a hater. I'm just gonna
- 57:16Speaker 1: keep it real with you all, Like hater d don't
- 57:19Speaker 1: drink hayter reade. That's what you used to stay? Would
- 57:21Speaker 1: Taylor Swift say, because the haters gonna hate, hete hate,
- 57:25Speaker 1: don't be that, you know what? I like the Taylor
- 57:26Speaker 1: Swift lyric and I'm just like, damn, it's seven many yam.
- 57:31Speaker 1: When she's talking about getting trolled early in the morning,
- 57:34Speaker 1: I like, got a long list of ex lovers. That's
- 57:37Speaker 1: that's my favorite And that might be my favorite, not
- 57:41Speaker 1: that that has anything to do with this show, but
- 57:43Speaker 1: that might be my favorite song. All right, listen, you
- 57:45Speaker 1: know what my favorite song is Donald? That she sings
- 57:47Speaker 1: that she sings. You know what my favorite song is Donald?
- 57:49Speaker 1: And I think we should go into it right now.
- 57:51Speaker 1: It's our theme song that we should say we want
- 57:54Speaker 1: to thank you to Charlie Pooth who wrote the music,
- 57:56Speaker 1: and Donald and I wrote the lyrics, and I think
- 57:59Speaker 1: now is a better time than ever to start singing it.
- 58:02Speaker 1: So thank you for listening. Thank you to all the
- 58:06Speaker 1: medical person out there, out there who are absolutely on
- 58:09Speaker 1: the front lines, and thank you so much. And we
- 58:12Speaker 1: were watching you, and we see you and we celebrate you.
- 58:14Speaker 1: And this was a show that was always trying and
- 58:16Speaker 1: aspired to be a love letter to the medical workers
- 58:20Speaker 1: and uh and now more than ever, we want to
- 58:22Speaker 1: say thank you so much for being the heroes of today.
- 58:25Speaker 1: Thank you so much, and now let's sing. Donal, here's
- 58:28Speaker 1: some stories about show we made about a bunch of
- 58:33Speaker 1: times and nurses and janitor stories around here are around
- 58:45Speaker 1: here are
