Transcript
- 0:00Hey, this is Derek Verduren from Megadeth, and you're listening
- 0:02to ghostcokemag.com. Welcome back to the Ghost Co
- 0:13Magazine podcast, everybody. I'm Rose Ogier in today's
- 0:16episode Keith, incredible real person live in person.
- 0:20Can you believe it? I don't remember what time we
- 0:22had live in person one, but it was at a festival I'm pretty
- 0:25sure, which is probably why this one's at a festival to, Keith
- 0:28reported with Ava. Maybe at Bottle Rock and now 23
- 0:32year old singer-songwriter from Los Angeles who has some pretty
- 0:35awesome parents. Lulu.
- 0:38Her debut EP Orange Drive is out now.
- 0:42What's up everybody? It's Kefi from ghostcultmag.com
- 0:44and I am super stoked to be joined by Ava.
- 0:46Maybe. How are you doing today?
- 0:47I'm so good. How are?
- 0:48You, I am so great welcome to bottle Rock Napa.
- 0:50Thank you and what an amazing experience.
- 0:53You played first thing today and you, you and your band put on a
- 0:57terrific show. Thank you.
- 0:58I know you had a brand new EP, you're going on tour, all these
- 1:01exciting things, but just first set of the day, you know, I know
- 1:05you also did Lollapalooza last year, so festivals are not new
- 1:08to you, but it's always, you know, like an interesting
- 1:11challenge. A lot of people did show up,
- 1:12which I think was great. Which is amazing.
- 1:14I was, I had my expectations were on the ground so that I get
- 1:17it's only up from there and I was very pleasantly surprised,
- 1:20very happy. Yeah, and you had some super
- 1:22fans there who knew some of your older material, not just your
- 1:24new album Orange Drive. But I was really stoked to hear
- 1:28those first few singles. And people were singing along
- 1:30and I kind of craned around the crowd and checked everybody out.
- 1:33A lot of people, new, new converted fans, which is always
- 1:36you want. And of course you have some
- 1:37diehards, which is really sweet. Which is that's the goal, right?
- 1:41They might have come just to see you.
- 1:42That's so, that's so nice. That's so nice.
- 1:45Including once again, shout out to Tisha and Martin.
- 1:47With their bracelet. And they knew every word and
- 1:49they were like into it. And I love seeing that.
- 1:52I love music, doesn't matter what it is.
- 1:54I love coming to bottle rock for diverse artists and stuff I
- 1:57don't always get to cover. So this is a real treat.
- 1:59And I've been following your work for a few years and I I
- 2:02love the progression of the singles.
- 2:03And also, you know, I really love what you do with your
- 2:08voice. And, you know, it seems like the
- 2:10material and your voice are just one, which is amazing.
- 2:13Like you're very, you know, I can tell with your performance.
- 2:16It's important to you matters to tell those stories you're
- 2:19singing. About yeah, for sure.
- 2:21I think it started out as like I just couldn't shut up.
- 2:24And then it ended up just staying in the set.
- 2:27And it felt important because I think I also love artists that
- 2:30just put themselves out there completely of like, this is me,
- 2:35like it or not. And, and I feel like it provides
- 2:38important context for the songs because they're all very
- 2:40personal to me. Right on.
- 2:42And it's so hard, like right now, mental health, this needs
- 2:44to be like the number one topic of trending in real life, not
- 2:48just on social media because it's so overlooked.
- 2:51It's so stigmatized still. And you know, musicians, we
- 2:55always hear like, oh, the crazy rock person or the crazy singer
- 2:58chick. And it's just, you know, we're
- 3:00all little anxiety potatoes. I love that you talk.
- 3:02I love puke. I love that you talked about
- 3:04anxiety so much and other things just, you know, very self
- 3:08depreciating and and real. And I think people relate to
- 3:11that realness. I hope so.
- 3:13I think that it's important, especially when there's like if
- 3:16you're, if there's someone on a stage that is being very open
- 3:20and talking about their mental health, I feel like it
- 3:23encourages people that are watching maybe to be kinder to
- 3:26themselves. And so that that's always why I
- 3:29talk about it so openly. Word.
- 3:31I appreciate that so much and I've been very, I talk a lot.
- 3:34I always say our our DMS are open and I'm always really
- 3:38appreciative of people coming to us with their issues because I
- 3:41got mine and I'm not shy about talking about it.
- 3:43And again, we just don't, we need more.
- 3:45We need more people to do this just in their music with their
- 3:48platform, whatever it is, you know, So new record is out, very
- 3:52catchy, but I love, you know, it's clear to me that like
- 3:55obviously you have a deep love for soul and R&B as well.
- 3:58I know you grew up in a very musical family.
- 4:00It's well known and your experience, but just because
- 4:03this our first time meeting, who were some of the singers that
- 4:05inspired you to want to sing? To want to sing in general.
- 4:09Okay, let's see. To want to sing, I think I was
- 4:12inspired by a lot of male singers because I've always had
- 4:16a really low voice. And so it was always just like I
- 4:19gravitated towards tenors. So a lot of like Al Green, a lot
- 4:23of Stevie Wonder, a lot of Sam Cooke were was really what I was
- 4:30gravitating towards because we had the same register.
- 4:32And then for female vocalists, it was a lot of like Janis
- 4:35Joplin, a lot of Brittany Howard from Alabama Shakes, a lot of
- 4:40who else even like Adele, because Adele was like so
- 4:46popular when I was growing up. And so I always thought it was
- 4:48so cool to have Amy True. Amy, I hear some Amy like a.
- 4:51True Alto was was, yeah, that's that's what was around me at
- 4:57that. Time right on.
- 4:57That's awesome. And I love that you're going
- 4:59down that road too. But also some, you know, there
- 5:01there was the singer-songwriter stuff.
- 5:03There's a little bit of rocking in there.
- 5:05Like, I really dug it. Brittany Howard has a hardcore
- 5:07band now, by the way, which I love.
- 5:09And she's been here a few times both solo and with the Shakes.
- 5:12So I'm a huge fan actually. And yeah, I love, yeah, I love
- 5:16that you're kind of following in this path and like you're making
- 5:19your own music. You shout it out.
- 5:20DIY artists so important right now.
- 5:23Obviously we're at Bottle Rock and some of the biggest artists
- 5:26in the world are here. But also it's cool that I have
- 5:29discovered so many new cool bands from.
- 5:31Here the whole point of festivals.
- 5:34I really think that's what festivals are for.
- 5:36That's exactly right. I feel like that's lost.
- 5:38I feel like people don't take advantage of that.
- 5:42Like I'm playing Warp Tour and everyone is so mad about the
- 5:44lineup and I'm like, but the whole point of Warp Tour is to
- 5:47discover new artists. It's it's a catch 22 with Warp
- 5:52Tour because it's so iconic and it's also because all of those
- 5:57smaller bands became some of the biggest bands in the world.
- 6:00You just can't have that same kind of lineup.
- 6:02But I am stoked. I was going to ask about Warp
- 6:04tour. So buddy, I'm very yeah, no, I
- 6:06helping me with my Segway is one of my favorite things any artist
- 6:09can do beside make music and so and talk about DIY and also help
- 6:13me with Segways. And so yeah, I really love that
- 6:16you're on Warp Tour and again, you've become a festival old hat
- 6:20to you by the time you get there.
- 6:21But Warp Tour will be great and I know.
- 6:23Stuff for warp tour? You know, it's, it's more about
- 6:25marketing and nostalgia. Yeah, not the festival, but the,
- 6:28the idea that like, well, we can't have 20 Green days.
- 6:32We're not going to have these bands or even other bands like
- 6:34Pierce The Veil. Yeah.
- 6:35And and we came as Romans and and other bands.
- 6:38That became sirens and all. They became big.
- 6:40Big, big metal core bands. Yeah.
- 6:41Because they were on Warp tour. Because they played at 1:00.
- 6:44Yeah. In front of everybody else.
- 6:47And I and I had gone to a bunch of warp troops.
- 6:49And funny enough, when I've shown up at other festivals like
- 6:51Bottle Rock or even metal festivals like Aftershock, and
- 6:54I'll see people who met me at Warp Tour like 10 years earlier,
- 6:58like, you know, Lil Czar and people like that were like,
- 7:01didn't I see you at Warp Tour? That's in that same shirt.
- 7:04I was like not quite the same shirt but similar.
- 7:06Shirt, Sort of. Sort of a Hawaiian shirt back
- 7:09then. So yeah, just super cool that
- 7:10you're getting some exposure. You are supporting your new
- 7:13album, kicking off a huge tour. Is this your first headline
- 7:16tour? Yeah.
- 7:17Wow. Yeah, yeah.
- 7:18Nerves. Butterflies.
- 7:19Both all, all the above. Very nervous, very excited.
- 7:24I've done a couple tours, being first of three in direct
- 7:27support. So I'm, I'm really stoked to
- 7:29have it be my show and be able to have the full hour and curate
- 7:33it and, and it's going to be really fun and I hope it's fun
- 7:37and and also very healing for for the audience.
- 7:40Nice work beside your awesome beret and obviously a bottle of
- 7:43Tums if you have anxiety. Like what are some essential
- 7:46things you brought with you? Like, I'm going to need this for
- 7:48this headline tour to just to, to be alive on the roads away
- 7:51from home for a while. Yes, I brought a lot of books I
- 7:56like to read, so I bring a lot of books to read.
- 7:59What else have I brought? I'm currently reading the Rick
- 8:03Rubin book on creativity, which is great, and I like to read it
- 8:06while I'm on tour as like an active reading type of thing.
- 8:09And then I'm also doing the artist journey as well, which I
- 8:12do for tour. And then I'm reading Poisonwood
- 8:17Bible right now, which is fantastic.
- 8:20Cool. I read a bunch of things at once
- 8:21right on Crazy Person. I just read the Mark Compass
- 8:24book. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I read that
- 8:27too, so. Childhood was very surprising.
- 8:29I didn't realize it was harder. He had it harder than I thought.
- 8:33Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. I read that while I was at
- 8:36Coachella. And then the book ends at
- 8:37Coachella, which was so wild. Their comeback has been wild.
- 8:41It's amazing. They're reunite.
- 8:42Not quite a They've been back, they're come back, they're back.
- 8:46Is major. It's hard to.
- 8:47Do yeah, It's hard to do. It's hard to do.
- 8:49Yeah. So that's awesome.
- 8:49Yeah. You look, So you got the tour,
- 8:51new album. Do you have some other singles
- 8:53dropping you can talk about yet or is it a surprise?
- 8:55You can't talk about new music yet.
- 8:56It's a surprise. OK, but I the EP came out like a
- 9:00week ago, so I can't even think about new music.
- 9:02So. But I'm always thinking about
- 9:03new music. Yeah, of course, of course.
- 9:04No, I meant like, you know, it seemed like you played pretty
- 9:06much the whole EP and I. Played the whole.
- 9:09Bunch of your singles, so yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:11I've released 11 singles and then the EPS.
- 9:13So it's. Really.
- 9:14Smart. It's been really great.
- 9:16And then I was writing this next batch of singles and I knew that
- 9:19it had to be a project and I was very.
- 9:21Excited to took a whole shape finally.
- 9:23Yeah, that's awesome. I love that you put it together
- 9:24that way. We'll link everything in the
- 9:27description so everybody can love it and get it.
- 9:29And yeah, you know, thanks for hanging out with Ghost Co.
- 9:32Welcome to Bottle Rock again. Enjoy the rest of the day.
- 9:34Who else are you excited to see today before we?
- 9:36Go I'm really excited to see Justin Timberlake.
- 9:40I'm excited to see what he's going to do.
- 9:42He's great live. Love it.
- 9:44I mean, he's an incredible vocalist.
- 9:45I'm very, very excited. And then who else?
- 9:48Lauren Mayberry, who I opened for last night, is incredible
- 9:51and she's on soon, so I'm. Going to go check out the end of
- 9:54Sharon and I'm going to go check out Sharon Bennett and then go
