- 0:06Speaker 1: Hey, guys, we are back on normally the show with
- 0:08Speaker 1: normalish takes for when the news gets weird. I am
- 0:10Speaker 1: Mary Catherine Ham.
- 0:11Speaker 2: I'm Carol Markowitz. How are you, Mary Catherine.
- 0:14Speaker 1: I am doing pretty good. We just had the last
- 0:17Speaker 1: day of school over here. Nice and I don't want
- 0:21Speaker 1: I don't like to brag, but there was some hardware
- 0:23Speaker 1: brought home, some real academic successes over there. Tell us
- 0:29Speaker 1: a big, one big trophy for just like reading the
- 0:32Speaker 1: most books, which of all the things I succeeded in
- 0:34Speaker 1: in homeschool for the one year I did, it was
- 0:37Speaker 1: I got them reading lots of books, so they always
- 0:39Speaker 1: get hardware for that. Well done, guys, I love it.
- 0:42Speaker 2: And you and I were in Argentina with some friends
- 0:45Speaker 2: and we got to see, you know, free market in action.
- 0:48Speaker 1: It was kind of cool. Oh my gosh, I'm in
- 0:51Speaker 1: my Malay shirt right now. Oh very nice. I made, yes,
- 0:56Speaker 1: it is. It is nice to be in a place
- 0:58Speaker 1: where a bunch of people, well one of you know,
- 1:00Speaker 1: the leader of which is like quite ideologically committed to
- 1:03Speaker 1: the free market, was like, this will solve our near
- 1:06Speaker 1: like our hyper inflation problems and make the economy better
- 1:09Speaker 1: and give us businesses and prospect and then they do
- 1:12Speaker 1: it and it's like, oh, that's what happened, Like it worked.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it's great, and I feel like I could not
- 1:19Speaker 2: eat steak for a while because we had some amazing lot.
- 1:24Speaker 1: One thing can I say, that's interesting about the hyper
- 1:25Speaker 1: inflation thing, which you don't experience if you've never been
- 1:28Speaker 1: in that kind of economy. A lot of things in Argentina,
- 1:31Speaker 1: the prices are on a QR code or done by
- 1:35Speaker 1: letter or color code because during a time of hyper inflation,
- 1:39Speaker 1: they had to raise prices so frequently that it didn't
- 1:41Speaker 1: make sense to price things. And that is a whole
- 1:44Speaker 1: different world, that's right.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Yeah, doing the math math was hard there, but they're
- 1:51Speaker 2: getting better. Everything is improving, and it's good to see it.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Very nice.
- 1:55Speaker 2: All right. You know, we've had some politics happen in
- 1:58Speaker 2: our absence. Our last recorded episode was before the Thomas
- 2:04Speaker 2: Massy vote. He of course has lost and he's taking
- 2:07Speaker 2: it super well and not at all freaking out on
- 2:11Speaker 2: social media and spiraling.
- 2:15Speaker 1: So yeah, that happened.
- 2:17Speaker 2: And then of course last night as we're recording this,
- 2:20Speaker 2: John Cornyn lost to Ken Paxton for the primary race
- 2:26Speaker 2: in Texas, and so Ken Paxton would running against James
- 2:31Speaker 2: tell Rico, who I think people have very mixed opinions
- 2:36Speaker 2: on because I keep seeing online things like Republicans are
- 2:40Speaker 2: very worried about James tel Rico, and then I hear
- 2:43Speaker 2: him talk or see.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Him, and I'm like, are they are they worried about this? Well? It,
- 2:49Speaker 1: Texas is a white whale for Democrats, right, yeah, they
- 2:54Speaker 1: did used to win statewide when they were saying a
- 2:58Speaker 1: couple decades ago. They don't anymore. And while like Kim,
- 3:03Speaker 1: Paxton is a flawed candidate. There's many both professional and
- 3:07Speaker 1: domestic ethical issues with him, and legal ones as well,
- 3:12Speaker 1: but he did the thing that works in this era,
- 3:15Speaker 1: which is he went after the right people and he
- 3:18Speaker 1: signaled to people that he was fighting on their behalf.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Cornan was an establishment Republican in the Senate who I
- 3:24Speaker 1: like and I think importantly is kind of a donor
- 3:27Speaker 1: whisperer in Texas. And it'll be interesting to see when
- 3:31Speaker 1: this race costs a ton more money than it might
- 3:35Speaker 1: have cost if Cornyn had run, because Paxon is more
- 3:38Speaker 1: vulnerable where that money comes from, because it might come
- 3:41Speaker 1: from Trump pack versus Texas donors. We'll see they might
- 3:45Speaker 1: just like cough up the same amount of money regardless.
- 3:48Speaker 1: But Paxton is vulnerable. However, if you put on the
- 3:53Speaker 1: other side Democrat who is on tape saying every single
- 3:58Speaker 1: twenty twenty in same thing, yeah, and he is, he
- 4:03Speaker 1: is also extremely vulnerable. Yeah.
- 4:07Speaker 2: We actually have Ken Paxton's first ad and it's pretty powerful.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Let's roll that clip.
- 4:13Speaker 3: This is Texas. This is not There are many more
- 4:18Speaker 3: than two biological sexis. In fact, there are six. This
- 4:21Speaker 3: is Texas.
- 4:23Speaker 2: This is not.
- 4:24Speaker 3: The American flag is such a complicated symbol for most
- 4:27Speaker 3: of us. This is Texas. This is not They're gonna
- 4:30Speaker 3: call me a radical leftist. This is Texas. This is
- 4:35Speaker 3: not something that you love.
- 4:37Speaker 1: That's not family or friends.
- 4:41Speaker 3: I love, and I'm just saying it because it's on
- 4:44Speaker 3: my mind. The trans children. This is Texas.
- 4:49Speaker 2: This is not.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Our southern border should be like our front courch. There
- 4:53Speaker 3: should be a giant welcome matt out front. This is Texas.
- 4:58Speaker 2: This is not.
- 4:59Speaker 3: It is now existent that we try to reduce our
- 5:02Speaker 3: meat consumption. I am proud to say that our campaign
- 5:06Speaker 3: has officially become a non meat campaign. This is Texas.
- 5:11Speaker 3: This is not.
- 5:14Speaker 2: So.
- 5:14Speaker 1: For people listening on audio.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Obviously that this is Texas is a lot of American
- 5:18Speaker 2: flags and really good looking brisket, and at the end
- 5:21Speaker 2: it's Ken Paxton and Donald Trump. And of course all
- 5:25Speaker 2: the clips of Tall Rico are far left insanity. And
- 5:29Speaker 2: it is going to be interesting to see whether the
- 5:34Speaker 2: fact that Democrats elect, you know, pick this guy, pick
- 5:37Speaker 2: Tell Rico because they want to seem more normal, and
- 5:40Speaker 2: he seems kind of normal, and he's a self professed
- 5:44Speaker 2: Christian and they think of him as an everyman, and
- 5:48Speaker 2: then you have these comments by him. It'll be interesting
- 5:51Speaker 2: to see whether Democrats can get that gap between who
- 5:55Speaker 2: they think he is and who he actually is to
- 5:58Speaker 2: be a bit closer.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think that standing in the back of
- 6:03Speaker 1: a pickup truck and wearing a Texas flag shirt is
- 6:07Speaker 1: enough to overcome what we just heard, right, And I
- 6:12Speaker 1: think there is a lot of truth to the fact
- 6:14Speaker 1: that Democrats in consultant circles look at Beto O'Rourke and
- 6:20Speaker 1: he's like an even more JV. Beto O'Rourke look at
- 6:23Speaker 1: these two and go, that's that's what people think is normal.
- 6:26Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:26Speaker 1: He goes to church. I heard that people go to
- 6:29Speaker 1: church that's right. He's doing that. That must be normal.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I don't really know. Yeah, but and actually what's interesting
- 6:35Speaker 1: about Tallarico is that they're in a bind because they
- 6:38Speaker 1: do need people who know what church is right, they
- 6:41Speaker 1: do need people of faith. But in order to be
- 6:44Speaker 1: a lefty of faith who rises in these weird consultant
- 6:49Speaker 1: classes with the weird base, you have to be a
- 6:52Speaker 1: Christian who has said or a person of faith who
- 6:54Speaker 1: has said over and over again that conveniently enough, your
- 6:58Speaker 1: faith actually compels you to do all the insane lefty
- 7:03Speaker 1: things that the lefties like. And then they're like, oh
- 7:06Speaker 1: my gosh, Christianity's great. Look look at this Christian who
- 7:09Speaker 1: says he agrees with us on all of these things.
- 7:12Speaker 1: So he uses the Bible to justify abortion, he uses
- 7:15Speaker 1: the Bible to talk about trans kids and those policies.
- 7:19Speaker 1: And I think many Christians, of which there are tons
- 7:22Speaker 1: in Texas, look at that kind of thing as particularly
- 7:26Speaker 1: off putting, Like you're not bringing me in. I feel
- 7:29Speaker 1: like I'm being pushed away.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it. Our friend Ryan Gerdeski, who also has
- 7:38Speaker 2: a show on the klan Buck podcast network, had this
- 7:42Speaker 2: to say about whether Republicans will vote for Paxton, and
- 7:45Speaker 2: whether Democrats, despite what they're saying, oh, we think Tellrik
- 7:49Speaker 2: goes an easy win, whether they will actually support him
- 7:53Speaker 2: with their money.
- 7:54Speaker 5: Do Republicans and Texas have to worry. Do they have
- 7:57Speaker 5: to worry that their senate is going their sentence? He's
- 7:59Speaker 5: going to go for the first time in decades. A
- 8:02Speaker 5: big question comes down to money. I want to address
- 8:05Speaker 5: the money issue first. Tall Rico is raising a lot
- 8:08Speaker 5: of it. The Democrat raised twenty seven million dollars in
- 8:11Speaker 5: the last quarter. That's more than Paxson has raised total,
- 8:16Speaker 5: and Tallerico's going into this election with ten million dollars
- 8:20Speaker 5: cash on hand. That's not a small amount of money.
- 8:23Speaker 5: It is more likely than not that tall Rico is
- 8:27Speaker 5: basically on his own in this election. Democrats nationally are
- 8:31Speaker 5: looking at protecting their incumbents in places like Georgia and
- 8:35Speaker 5: picking up They think Maine, North Carolina, Ohio, Alaska, and
- 8:38Speaker 5: Iowa are much easier chances to pick up wins than Texas.
- 8:43Speaker 5: Texas is way down on the list. Jackson has trailed
- 8:47Speaker 5: or been tied in most of the polls in the
- 8:49Speaker 5: last few months. However, most are within the margin of error,
- 8:53Speaker 5: so he's not that far behind. This was also true
- 8:55Speaker 5: of Ted Cruz in twenty eighteen, when he won by
- 8:57Speaker 5: only two points. According to the most recent pole why
- 9:00Speaker 5: the Texas Southern University it has the race tied. That
- 9:03Speaker 5: poll also on that ninety percent of Quorn voters say
- 9:07Speaker 5: they're voting for Paxton in the general. Only two percent
- 9:10Speaker 5: say they plan on voting for Tall Rico. So the
- 9:12Speaker 5: idea that Republicans won't vote for Paxton but they'll only
- 9:16Speaker 5: vote for Kryn, it's just not true. Paxton is doing
- 9:19Speaker 5: very poorly among two key demographic groups that went in
- 9:23Speaker 5: Trump's favor in twenty twenty four. Among Latinos, Paxson's down
- 9:28Speaker 5: eighteen points. Among Latinos in Texas. Trump won Latinos by
- 9:32Speaker 5: ten points, so it's a tremendous twenty eight point swing
- 9:35Speaker 5: against Republicans. The other group, Paxston struggling with our independence.
- 9:40Speaker 5: He's down twenty five points on average in these polls
- 9:43Speaker 5: among independents. Despite these awful numbers, Paxton is still in
- 9:47Speaker 5: the March of Era because one thing is really working
- 9:51Speaker 5: in Paxton's favor. Among undecideds, people who say they're not
- 9:55Speaker 5: sure who they're voting for. More of them a lean
- 9:58Speaker 5: Republican or are Republican now then lean Democrat, meaning there
- 10:04Speaker 5: is room for Pason to grow among his own base.
- 10:08Speaker 5: The good thing for Packson is is that Greg Abbott,
- 10:11Speaker 5: the governor who's also running for re election, is doing
- 10:14Speaker 5: much better among those key demographics than Pacton is there
- 10:18Speaker 5: is a chance that Abbot's name on the ballot may
- 10:21Speaker 5: help out Paston kind of narrow those margins.
- 10:24Speaker 2: It does gets so good at breaking down those numbers.
- 10:27Speaker 2: But I think that the thing that we're being told
- 10:30Speaker 2: online is that Cornin voters just won't go for Paxton,
- 10:34Speaker 2: and the numbers kind of don't show that they might
- 10:37Speaker 2: be mad. It's only you know, the day after the election,
- 10:40Speaker 2: but it doesn't mean that they won't line up with Paxton.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, I think largely people will end up coming home.
- 10:47Speaker 1: And this is sort of a symbol for all of
- 10:50Speaker 1: American politics right now, which is, look, if you give
- 10:52Speaker 1: people who are inclined to agree with Paxton on like
- 10:55Speaker 1: eighty percent of issues, yeah, a flawed candidate who they
- 10:58Speaker 1: believe is like, hmmm, I don't like a lot of
- 11:01Speaker 1: things about him. I don't like how he went after
- 11:02Speaker 1: Cornyn and they're hesitant if they look over on the
- 11:07Speaker 1: other side and they see James Tallerico, who like lists
- 11:13Speaker 1: the things he loves and first thing among them is
- 11:16Speaker 1: the trans children that came to fight for themselves at
- 11:20Speaker 1: the Capitol or something like. That's a weird first thing
- 11:22Speaker 1: to list. They go, maybe I can just pull the
- 11:27Speaker 1: lever like that, this is what it's happening. I would
- 11:32Speaker 1: also say Patrick Graffini, who's goodt qunching these numbers, and
- 11:34Speaker 1: this is from a while ago, but it's worth considering.
- 11:37Speaker 1: He says, a worst case scenario for Texas Republicans is
- 11:40Speaker 1: a reverse J. Jones, who was the Terrible Age and
- 11:44Speaker 1: who you know, said he was going to be trying
- 11:48Speaker 1: to kill his opponents children and whatnot or would like
- 11:51Speaker 1: to watch them die. Is a reverse J. Jones where
- 11:54Speaker 1: the electorate shifts left and the GOP is on the
- 11:57Speaker 1: wrong side of a candidate quality problem. Assume the November
- 12:00Speaker 1: electorate shifts six points left Trump plus fourteen to Trump
- 12:03Speaker 1: plus eight and Paxton has Jones's six point underperformance. Paxson
- 12:07Speaker 1: still wins by two, so they like, it's a much
- 12:11Speaker 1: more difficult environment for a Democrat, and you know, there
- 12:16Speaker 1: were going to be falls here first and foremost the
- 12:19Speaker 1: fact that because Cornyn and he went after themselves each
- 12:22Speaker 1: other so hard, the Democratic Senatorial Committee, I believe, put
- 12:27Speaker 1: out a tweet today that was like, we were going
- 12:28Speaker 1: to put out all the things wrong with Ken Taxton,
- 12:30Speaker 1: but the NRSC already did it for us, which is
- 12:32Speaker 1: the Republican So we had done you know, who had
- 12:35Speaker 1: put out facts about Paxson during the primary.
- 12:39Speaker 2: So yeah, well we'll see what happens. Look, anything is
- 12:43Speaker 2: possible states change.
- 12:46Speaker 3: You know.
- 12:46Speaker 2: I used to think of Virginia as Democrats white whale.
- 12:50Speaker 2: I used to think that that was, you know, largely impossible.
- 12:53Speaker 2: But of course it's you know, I have the same look.
- 12:56Speaker 1: It's a white whale until you catch it and then
- 12:58Speaker 1: you're like, oh, you know, so it can't happen. Like
- 13:01Speaker 1: Republicans should always steal themselves, You should always run a
- 13:04Speaker 1: race as if you are really competing with this person. Yeah,
- 13:09Speaker 1: and especially with independence, like Paxton is branded in a
- 13:12Speaker 1: way that's going to be tough to bring a lot
- 13:15Speaker 1: of them to him, and Abbott may need to be
- 13:18Speaker 1: the messenger on any of that.
- 13:20Speaker 2: That's right, Well, we're going to take a short break
- 13:23Speaker 2: and come right back to talk about what things that
- 13:26Speaker 2: are fun should we not be doing anymore. We'll be
- 13:29Speaker 2: right back. We are back on normally where it kind
- 13:36Speaker 2: of throwaway comment by Stephen Bartlett of the very popular
- 13:41Speaker 2: podcast Diary of a CEO talking about how when he
- 13:46Speaker 2: has a couple of glasses of wine it really messes
- 13:49Speaker 2: him up and he doesn't drink really anymore has really
- 13:54Speaker 2: caused a lot of controversy on the old Internet.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Let's roll that clip.
- 13:58Speaker 6: It's one of those areas where you don't understand the
- 14:00Speaker 6: hidden cost until you really give it up for a while.
- 14:03Speaker 6: And I think about my own relationship with drinking. And
- 14:06Speaker 6: I stopped drinking at thirty years old, and I thirty three,
- 14:08Speaker 6: and I had just drank because I just drank. I'd
- 14:10Speaker 6: never ran the experiment of just giving it up for
- 14:12Speaker 6: a while. And then, like, I don't know, must maybe
- 14:14Speaker 6: I was at thirty one, I thought, you not I
- 14:16Speaker 6: have a drink again, because now I could really ab
- 14:18Speaker 6: test it. I had a year of not drinking, decided
- 14:20Speaker 6: to have a drink again. It ruined three days of
- 14:22Speaker 6: my life. I had a couple of glasses of wine,
- 14:24Speaker 6: didn't get drunk. It ruined three days of my life
- 14:27Speaker 6: because of the domino Effected course, it meant that I
- 14:30Speaker 6: got worse sleep that night, and then because I got
- 14:32Speaker 6: worse sleep that night, I more poorly the next day
- 14:35Speaker 6: because my my dopamine system or whatever, the quartersole system
- 14:37Speaker 6: was all messed up. And then I podcasted worse. I
- 14:41Speaker 6: didn't go to the gym the day after that, that
- 14:43Speaker 6: day all the day after because of that, because I
- 14:45Speaker 6: felt really bad. I then slept worse. And I could
- 14:48Speaker 6: track all of this on my week pashtag ad hashtagspunsor
- 14:50Speaker 6: hashtag investor whatever. Oh yeah, and I was like, oh
- 14:52Speaker 6: my god, those three glasses of wine had this hidden
- 14:56Speaker 6: domino effect that I must have been living with for
- 14:58Speaker 6: my whole life too.
- 15:02Speaker 2: The thing is, I don't entirely disagree with him. I've
- 15:04Speaker 2: talked about this on the show before. I would like
- 15:06Speaker 2: to drink more, I simply cannot. I literally like, I
- 15:10Speaker 2: have one drink. If I have two drinks, it's my maximum.
- 15:14Speaker 2: And if I have any more than two, I really
- 15:15Speaker 2: don't feel great the next day. I don't have a
- 15:18Speaker 2: WOOT or anything to track my sleep. I just, you know,
- 15:21Speaker 2: I do it the old fashioned way. I just don't
- 15:24Speaker 2: feel well.
- 15:24Speaker 1: And I know it, and something tells me I don't
- 15:30Speaker 1: feel good, but it's not my watch, right right, something inside.
- 15:34Speaker 2: But the thing is that having a couple of glasses
- 15:37Speaker 2: of wine or a couple of drinks with your friends,
- 15:39Speaker 2: there's things about it that have positives that don't get
- 15:43Speaker 2: addressed here by the metrics on your wrist. It's you know,
- 15:48Speaker 2: you're hanging out with your friends and you have a
- 15:50Speaker 2: couple of drinks, and things get looser, and things get funnier,
- 15:53Speaker 2: and you're laughing more and you're having fun conversations and
- 15:56Speaker 2: all of that is what makes life enjoyable.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Like it's okay to like that, yeah, I'm with you,
- 16:03Speaker 1: that I'm cautious about this kind of thing because like, yes,
- 16:06Speaker 1: it will your sleep won't be as good, you'll be
- 16:09Speaker 1: sort of tired the next day. The idea that it's
- 16:11Speaker 1: ruining three days of your life, right thoodcasting stays pretty good.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Let's just say it right or keep it up here.
- 16:19Speaker 1: But like a lot of people pointed out, obviously he's
- 16:21Speaker 1: selling the Whoop bracelet that gives you these metrics. And presumably,
- 16:25Speaker 1: I guess because this went viral, this would be a
- 16:27Speaker 1: great ad for this, except it does not convince me
- 16:29Speaker 1: at all to where for this reason, like, I actually
- 16:33Speaker 1: think my one of my overarching opinions about our modern
- 16:37Speaker 1: prosperity and the way we live is that optimate optimization
- 16:39Speaker 1: is bad. Actually optimizing every corner of your life and
- 16:44Speaker 1: having all those metrics and feeling pressured by them actually
- 16:48Speaker 1: doesn't make you enjoy life more. I understand that whatever
- 16:50Speaker 1: you measure you can improve in so like there are,
- 16:53Speaker 1: but you should keep that to a small number of things.
- 16:56Speaker 1: It should not be everything, because I find that the
- 16:59Speaker 1: least optimal areas of my life and the least planned
- 17:03Speaker 1: areas of my life end up being the most rewarding
- 17:06Speaker 1: in the moment. And I think that wearing a bracelet
- 17:10Speaker 1: like that and getting all this feedback is likely to
- 17:13Speaker 1: put you into a negative food feedback loop as soon
- 17:16Speaker 1: as you have the couple of glasses of wine, when
- 17:18Speaker 1: you would have forgotten the bad effects bothering me, You're like,
- 17:23Speaker 1: I'm podcasting, still off like you wouldn't even know that.
- 17:26Speaker 1: I think you've set yourself up from that. But there
- 17:29Speaker 1: are so many areas of life where this is the case,
- 17:31Speaker 1: whether it's tracking your kids, grades, travel, sports, like all
- 17:37Speaker 1: the things that we optimize, optimize, optimize now and we
- 17:41Speaker 1: lost the nineties eighties thing where you just kind of
- 17:44Speaker 1: do it. Yeah, like the doing it was better and fun.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Another example of this that we have today is from
- 17:52Speaker 2: Brian Johnson. He is an entrepreneur and he's famously a
- 17:57Speaker 2: biohacker who's like trying to live forever. He's trying to
- 18:00Speaker 2: reverse his body's aging process. He's also gotten into some
- 18:04Speaker 2: really odd stuff on again X where he talks about
- 18:09Speaker 2: his girlfriend's sorry guys, vagina and how it's in the
- 18:15Speaker 2: top one percent of all vaginas. So he's a little
- 18:20Speaker 2: bit into his metrics and in a way that is
- 18:23Speaker 2: very sweet, is it though?
- 18:26Speaker 1: If your man is measuring your vagina's no. So, I
- 18:30Speaker 1: actually have a weird take on this, which is that
- 18:33Speaker 1: the basis of that was that he was investigating her endometriosis,
- 18:38Speaker 1: So she has an actual manepause. I was I don't
- 18:41Speaker 1: know where you were going with this, but I was
- 18:43Speaker 1: worried if this obsessive weirdo can get to the bottom
- 18:48Speaker 1: of some endometriosis problems, right, I think wonderful for everyone.
- 18:52Speaker 1: And if she's willing to be the person who has
- 18:55Speaker 1: experimented upon go forth, so that's why weird.
- 18:58Speaker 2: But go ahead, going to see her parents. I believe
- 19:02Speaker 2: in Australia. Oh yeah, Australia, and.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Tweets Australia. Yeah yeah.
- 19:10Speaker 2: He tweets out, modern life has tricked us into thinking
- 19:13Speaker 2: travel is good. It's kind of barbaric for the body.
- 19:16Speaker 2: And then he goes into like all the data like
- 19:18Speaker 2: nine days for blood glucose stability, nine days to re
- 19:22Speaker 2: entrain my circadian rhythm, eighteen days for sleep architecture recovery.
- 19:27Speaker 2: It's just like what And he's like, last time I
- 19:29Speaker 2: went to Asia, we measured my biomarkers, and I'm just like,
- 19:32Speaker 2: last time I went to Asia, we measured how many
- 19:34Speaker 2: dumplings I ate?
- 19:37Speaker 1: And that was super fun.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Yeah, and it was a lot of dumplings.
- 19:42Speaker 1: I can't understand how you do anything when you're measuring
- 19:47Speaker 1: this is it's actually a little bit like COVID response, right.
- 19:49Speaker 1: If you're only measuring the negatives, of course, this will
- 19:53Speaker 1: seem like a bad idea. I wanted to shout out again.
- 19:56Speaker 1: I do it every now and then. But one of
- 19:57Speaker 1: my favorite pieces ever, which was in Reason magazine, Peter
- 20:00Speaker 1: Suderman called what old time saloons tell us about the
- 20:03Speaker 1: pandemics damage. He compared post prohibition numbers of patents with
- 20:08Speaker 1: during prohibition numbers of patents, And there are studies that
- 20:12Speaker 1: show basically that drinking together and making these connections creates
- 20:15Speaker 1: innovation in society, not just fun but actual.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, I've had a lot of good ideas
- 20:22Speaker 2: when I'm John.
- 20:24Speaker 1: But if you're only measuring the negatives of going out
- 20:27Speaker 1: and having drinks with your friends, of course it seems bad.
- 20:29Speaker 1: There are negative effects, but it's a trade off.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Right, right. If you're not measuring the dumplings you ate
- 20:36Speaker 2: in Asia and only focusing on your sleep architecture recovery,
- 20:40Speaker 2: you're going to see the negatives.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Nonetheless, I cheer him on in his endometriosis investigation.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Yes, now I do too, now that we know why
- 20:49Speaker 2: he was so weird about it. Okay, we're going to
- 20:52Speaker 2: take a short break and come back and discuss whether
- 20:55Speaker 2: comedy is bad.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Be right back, all right, guys. We are back on
- 21:01Speaker 1: normally with some comedy news. And it ain't that funny.
- 21:06Speaker 1: So there was a roast of Kevin Hart, a famous comedian,
- 21:09Speaker 1: which featured all the famous comedians, and it seems like
- 21:13Speaker 1: Somewhere along the way, several of the comedians forgot what
- 21:17Speaker 1: roasts are for, because we've now had almost a week
- 21:21Speaker 1: of coverage of mean jokes from a roast because they
- 21:26Speaker 1: are too objectionable, Carol, too objectionable.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Yeah, So it's funny because there was a Charlie Kirk
- 21:37Speaker 2: joke at this roast. Pete Davidson actually delivered it, and
- 21:41Speaker 2: nobody on the right has really gone on and on
- 21:44Speaker 2: about it. I mean maybe there were people haven't criticized
- 21:46Speaker 2: all the time, but I haven't seen either. And it's
- 21:51Speaker 2: very possible that the left remains humorless right. I mean,
- 21:55Speaker 2: that's what the argument has been about them for so long.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Chelsea Handler in particular is not handling the whole roast. Well,
- 22:03Speaker 2: she was picked on a little bit. You know, she's
- 22:06Speaker 2: a comedian. What does she not understand?
- 22:08Speaker 1: They keep saying like it's in poor taste, and I'm like,
- 22:12Speaker 1: it's a roast.
- 22:13Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 22:14Speaker 2: And Kevin has like his nine to eleven jokes about
- 22:17Speaker 2: his dad who died at nine to eleven.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Yes, and Kevin, sorry, Kevin Hurt knows all these comedians.
- 22:24Speaker 1: He knows what they're going to do. I like, I
- 22:27Speaker 1: actually looked up the Hinchecliff joke because I was like, people,
- 22:31Speaker 1: sure are making a big deal about this, and it
- 22:34Speaker 1: was basically like, uh, you've made the black community so proud.
- 22:39Speaker 1: George Floyd is looking down on all of us, laughing
- 22:41Speaker 1: so hard he can't breathe. It is edgy.
- 22:46Speaker 3: It is.
- 22:47Speaker 1: It is like it is a roast joke by Tony Hinchcliff, right,
- 22:53Speaker 1: And like if you don't, if you're not willing to
- 22:56Speaker 1: let that be a nasty joke, then how do you
- 23:00Speaker 1: allow the rest of the nasty jokes? It's again a roast.
- 23:03Speaker 1: This is the definition of the thing.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Yeah, Kevin Hart's doing a good job pushing back on
- 23:09Speaker 2: it though.
- 23:09Speaker 1: He was on Breakfast Club and he had this to say.
- 23:12Speaker 4: The George Flow joke, it wasn't a tasteful joke to
- 23:15Speaker 4: our culture, to our audience, but our audience that's watching
- 23:21Speaker 4: the roast. If you're watching the roast, you get why
- 23:24Speaker 4: they're doing it. You get why the racial humor is
- 23:28Speaker 4: is on the table, Like it's not. I wasn't shocked,
- 23:33Speaker 4: Like that's what they do. Go and look at the
- 23:35Speaker 4: Tom Brady one, like that's what they do. It's it
- 23:38Speaker 4: happens every year when you're do a roast, it's not new.
- 23:41Speaker 4: This isn't a new it's not a new agenda. It's
- 23:44Speaker 4: not a new approach to comedy. Do you feel like
- 23:47Speaker 4: Tony Hnscliff went too far when he made that joke
- 23:48Speaker 4: about George Wood. It's Tony Hinchcliffe like, I don't like,
- 23:53Speaker 4: I don't expect less, I don't expect more.
- 23:55Speaker 3: I feel like you're saying going too far as the point,
- 23:57Speaker 3: I don't know if it wor was.
- 23:58Speaker 4: Yes, I mean, that's why you're there. And I hate
- 24:02Speaker 4: to say this, but I'm going to because we're being honest.
- 24:06Speaker 4: People are talking about that joke, talk about a set.
- 24:11Speaker 4: Tony Hinchcliffe arguably had the best set or one of
- 24:15Speaker 4: the best sets between Tony and chryl And I would
- 24:19Speaker 4: say Naim had.
- 24:21Speaker 1: A real.
- 24:23Speaker 4: I was laughing out loud at Tony until that the joke,
- 24:26Speaker 4: but not even just that joke. I don't like when
- 24:28Speaker 4: people joke about violent tragic death. I like Pete said,
- 24:32Speaker 4: and I was like, I mean Pete, Pete, Pete had
- 24:34Speaker 4: a great set too. Pete had a Charlie Kurk joking Like,
- 24:38Speaker 4: would I tell those jokes?
- 24:40Speaker 2: No?
- 24:40Speaker 4: But do I get why they're being told. Yes, like
- 24:43Speaker 4: I'm not looking at Pete crazy, I'm not looking at
- 24:45Speaker 4: Tony like that's what. I know what you're going to do.
- 24:48Speaker 4: I know your style of comedy. I'm going to appreciate humor.
- 24:55Speaker 4: I don't get affected by the attempt of humor. I
- 24:59Speaker 4: get it right in this case, like do more. It's
- 25:04Speaker 4: my production, we're live. The more is what? Like, what
- 25:10Speaker 4: is it that you expect me? You want me to
- 25:12Speaker 4: take a live production and stand up and fight Tony
- 25:17Speaker 4: or have a reaction like Tony told a joke. It
- 25:20Speaker 4: wasn't a tasteful joke to us. We didn't like it. Okay,
- 25:25Speaker 4: hey man, fuck that joke. We move on. I don't
- 25:28Speaker 4: understand why we stand on the hill. And it becomes
- 25:32Speaker 4: like this this big thing of like, oh man, the
- 25:35Speaker 4: motherfuckers they do this and they're attacking the culture. And
- 25:38Speaker 4: it doesn't have to be that. It literally is either
- 25:41Speaker 4: you're a fan of this level of content or you're not.
- 25:45Speaker 4: And if you're not a fan, then you don't watch it.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Hey, that's a great philosophy.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Yeah, imagine that, and look at You're gonna find some
- 25:54Speaker 2: jokes distasteful and that's okay, and Chelsea Handler is now like,
- 25:58Speaker 2: you know, talking about White's premisey and how that's why
- 26:03Speaker 2: she was attacked because of the patriarchy, and like, come.
- 26:06Speaker 1: On, I actually this career. My other hot take is
- 26:10Speaker 1: that I like when people joke about death. Actually, and
- 26:14Speaker 1: I was. I was listening to Cheryl Undwood, who's another
- 26:17Speaker 1: comic that was there, and there were some jokes told
- 26:20Speaker 1: about the tragic death of her husband. Okay, if I
- 26:23Speaker 1: were in a roast situation, I too lost a husband,
- 26:27Speaker 1: I would expect there would be jokes about anything that
- 26:31Speaker 1: is vulnerable in your life at these events, because that's
- 26:35Speaker 1: literally what you're there for. And Cheryl Underwood said when
- 26:38Speaker 1: asked about it, and you can tell she doesn't really
- 26:39Speaker 1: want to be asked about it because she's also like
- 26:41Speaker 1: it's a roast. She's like, look, I knew they were
- 26:44Speaker 1: going to come at me for something, and I told them, like,
- 26:47Speaker 1: it better be funny and then I better have a comeback.
- 26:49Speaker 1: And that seems to me like, combined with Kevin Hart,
- 26:52Speaker 1: the proper way to look at roasts, which apparently most
- 26:56Speaker 1: of the people in the media in Hollywood are just
- 26:58Speaker 1: being introduced to the concept of.
