- 0:21Speaker 2: only give us four stars i'm inclined to believe you
- 0:24Speaker 2: are a hater coming to us live from the mean
- 0:26Speaker 2: streets of westchester county on thursday danny parkins of fs1
- 0:30Speaker 2: what's going on.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Man bo chilling good morning yes unfortunately uh fortunately for
- 0:37Speaker 1: me because i love coming on with you but i
- 0:38Speaker 1: this is too quick of a return visit for me
- 0:40Speaker 1: to have more stories from the westchester police blotter i
- 0:43Speaker 1: know you know so we'll we'll get we'll get back
- 0:45Speaker 1: to that next month.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Yeah no no we're waiting i'm sure we'll probably get
- 0:48Speaker 2: back around probably around september we'll talk about it you
- 0:51Speaker 2: know what i mean like i'm sure that'll be plenty
- 0:54Speaker 2: of time for the rough streets to like really build
- 0:56Speaker 2: up the proper tents it's gonna get real hot so
- 0:58Speaker 2: people gonna be tense that's what i'm saying out there
- 1:01Speaker 2: yeah that's right anything is possible so daddy and i
- 1:04Speaker 2: have worked in this industry in various capacities for quite
- 1:07Speaker 2: a while um I've done the local radio. You've done
- 1:10Speaker 2: the local radio. But something I had to remember about
- 1:13Speaker 2: me doing local radio is I did not do local
- 1:16Speaker 2: radio in an NFL market.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Like I did local radio in the Research Triangle area
- 1:23Speaker 2: of North Carolina, Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:27Speaker 2: So, like, the off-month football discussion, not really, like, there.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Then you get to doing national stuff, and it's like, oh, man,
- 1:37Speaker 2: worst comes to worst, who's going to win the NFC West?
- 1:40Speaker 2: You just throw that shit out there, and people are like,
- 1:42Speaker 2: hell yeah.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Let me get some of that. Like, have you seen
- 1:45Speaker 2: the Odyssey yet?
- 1:47Speaker 1: I have.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Okay, like, I feel like whenever we throw that kind
- 1:51Speaker 2: of stuff out there, everybody listening to us should turn
- 1:53Speaker 2: into a pig. You know what I mean? Like, you're
- 1:57Speaker 2: just greedy right now. Like, you're just so hungry. You're
- 2:01Speaker 2: just slobbering all over yourself. But this is the time
- 2:05Speaker 2: of year where you stretch it. The NBA has made
- 2:08Speaker 2: it so much easier, though. Like, the NBA has filled
- 2:11Speaker 2: up our July, basically, with compelling stuff. And then Kyle
- 2:14Speaker 2: Shanahan got into the car accident, and then they hit it,
- 2:18Speaker 2: which then made it something for us to discuss. Otherwise,
- 2:20Speaker 2: it would have just been TMP, baby. Thoughts and prayers.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Amen. And for us at Fox, we did so much
- 2:28Speaker 1: World Cup and then the LeBron saga in the offseason
- 2:32Speaker 1: and NBA movement. We normally will have done six weeks
- 2:37Speaker 1: of make-believe NFL stories right now. We didn't even get
- 2:40Speaker 1: to an NFL top 100 list story until they had
- 2:43Speaker 1: already released 100 through 70. I'm like, that's awesome. I
- 2:47Speaker 1: don't have to be caping for Jeffrey Simmons being snubbed
- 2:51Speaker 1: at number 83. But we're not we're not doing those
- 2:54Speaker 1: topics right now. It's been great. Yeah.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Like this is however, say all that to say for
- 3:00Speaker 2: the people. we're going to be doing some of that
- 3:03Speaker 2: NFL stuff.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Football season, baby.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I live for football season. You know, that's why we
- 3:08Speaker 1: get into this sort of thing on the national level. So,
- 3:10Speaker 1: I mean, it's, it's NFL three 65, man. I'm here
- 3:13Speaker 1: for it.
- 3:13Speaker 2: But like, I think about it on a local level,
- 3:15Speaker 2: like doing a Chicago, for example, you kind of at
- 3:17Speaker 2: least got something always to talk about or phone line
- 3:20Speaker 2: to turn on. It's when you do it for national
- 3:23Speaker 2: that I'm like, guys, we, we, we, we got to
- 3:27Speaker 2: look at ourselves in the, in the, like, like, we'll
- 3:32Speaker 2: just never talk about baseball, huh?
- 3:34Speaker 1: Well, yeah, baseball, baseball is really tough on the national
- 3:38Speaker 1: level because unless you're doing like, do you like the
- 3:42Speaker 1: pitch clock? Do you like automatic bowls and strikes? Like
- 3:45Speaker 1: is Shohei Otani the greatest of all time? Like, unless
- 3:48Speaker 1: you're doing like super broad things, people would rather watch,
- 3:52Speaker 1: you know, a 70 win Reds team than a hundred.
- 3:56Speaker 1: If you're in Cincinnati, uh, than a hundred when, you know,
- 3:59Speaker 1: Philly's team or whatever the case may be. Like, it's
- 4:01Speaker 1: just so localized. But man, and Chicago is a fun
- 4:05Speaker 1: NFL market or fun radio market to do it in
- 4:07Speaker 1: because like, while we love the bulls and some people
- 4:11Speaker 1: love the black Hawks and we love the Cubs and
- 4:13Speaker 1: some people love the white socks, everyone loves the bears. Yeah.
- 4:18Speaker 1: It's a true football town. And so like with the
- 4:21Speaker 1: bears being relevant, I was texting with my old producer
- 4:24Speaker 1: just the other day. Because I saw something that they
- 4:26Speaker 1: tweeted out, and I was like, dude, why are you
- 4:28Speaker 1: not just doing Colston Loveland, Luther Bird, and Roma Dunzay,
- 4:32Speaker 1: Caleb Williams, Ben Johnson, every single day?
- 4:34Speaker 2: That's the show.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Every single day. Just keep it going.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, but like, I feel like with the Bears,
- 4:40Speaker 2: you kind of get your guys like the same arc,
- 4:42Speaker 2: because everybody goes through the same arc. Right now, why
- 4:45Speaker 2: wouldn't you be optimistic? Like, there's no, you have nothing
- 4:48Speaker 2: to gain. I don't want to hear it.
- 4:50Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I'm saying, hold on, hold on.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Hold on, hold on.
- 4:53Speaker 2: I'm not talking about this year. I'm speaking generally in
- 4:58Speaker 2: terms of whipping up this sausage.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:01Speaker 2: There are other shows where people would say the word
- 5:04Speaker 2: pause right there. But for most teams, pick a market.
- 5:10Speaker 2: We'll call it the Titans right now.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 5:12Speaker 2: There's no reason not to be optimistic right now. And
- 5:15Speaker 2: then the shit come crashing down. And then you go
- 5:17Speaker 2: back to being unhappy. But for right now, you talk
- 5:20Speaker 2: yourself into.
- 5:20Speaker 1: What it is.
- 5:21Speaker 2: And for the Bears, that's what it's been. But this year...
- 5:26Speaker 2: Because of Caleb Williams and last year's interesting success, shall
- 5:30Speaker 2: we say. I recall there being a lot of really
- 5:32Speaker 2: close games. Yeah. That always bodes well.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Anyway. Go ahead.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Caleb Williams is on a long list that will be
- 5:42Speaker 2: what we talk about largely in this show. It is
- 5:44Speaker 2: very interesting, which is with Patrick Mahomes having not been
- 5:49Speaker 2: truly excellent the last couple of years, at least on
- 5:52Speaker 2: a consistent basis, right? Still capable of moments. and now
- 5:55Speaker 2: coming off of an ACL tear, it's really about every
- 6:00Speaker 2: other quarterback. And it feels like, with the exception, and
- 6:06Speaker 2: I mean, you could probably find a few more. Like,
- 6:08Speaker 2: I think Cam Ward avoids this list. Matthew Stafford avoids
- 6:13Speaker 2: this list. Interestingly enough, Sam Darnold avoids this list. But
- 6:19Speaker 2: it feels like every quarterback in the NFL is on
- 6:21Speaker 2: the clock. In some form or fashion, Every single one
- 6:27Speaker 2: of them is on the clock. I guess Mahomes is
- 6:30Speaker 2: not on the clock, at least one would think. But,
- 6:32Speaker 2: you know, he's still black. Anything can happen. But everybody's
- 6:36Speaker 2: on the clock. And Caleb Williams, it feels almost unfair,
- 6:40Speaker 2: but he showed enough last year that he now enters
- 6:44Speaker 2: this year not with the, ooh, I wonder what he's
- 6:47Speaker 2: going to do this year. But he better do it
- 6:50Speaker 2: this year.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Listen, if Caleb backslides this year, it'll be massively disappointing. Um,
- 6:57Speaker 1: and based on your intro here, um, I don't know
- 7:01Speaker 1: that we can watch week one bears Panthers together because
- 7:03Speaker 1: I will have so much like they're going to need
- 7:07Speaker 1: to win that game by double digits. And if they,
- 7:09Speaker 1: if they struggle, I don't know that I can have
- 7:13Speaker 1: you off to my left, just chirping about last year
- 7:17Speaker 1: being a fluke. So I might be there for you
- 7:19Speaker 1: with week two on week one. I might be a
- 7:21Speaker 1: little too stressed in a, in a should win game
- 7:24Speaker 1: for the bears. A bear season with hype and expectation
- 7:27Speaker 1: is a, is a rare place for me.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Um, I mean, how many times did that happen?
- 7:30Speaker 1: Like three? Yeah.
- 7:32Speaker 2: I mean, post Dicta.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Yeah. Like, honestly, like, cause yeah, 20 off of the
- 7:41Speaker 1: NFC championship game, bears Packers 2010. Like there was pretty
- 7:45Speaker 1: big 2011 height. You know, I had a lot of
- 7:49Speaker 1: year one, Ben Johnson hype last year, but not really
- 7:51Speaker 1: to win anything. Just like genuine week one excitement to
- 7:55Speaker 1: see what it would be. Um, you know, super bowl
- 7:59Speaker 1: team that lost to peyton kind of was like way
- 8:03Speaker 1: better than expected they were supposed to be good but
- 8:05Speaker 1: they were way better than expected so yeah like pre-season
- 8:09Speaker 1: week one massive like bait like hype it's it's less
- 8:14Speaker 1: than five and i will say there's like pre-season week
- 8:17Speaker 1: one we could have the mvp of the league hype
- 8:21Speaker 1: literally never in my life yeah like literally and i
- 8:25Speaker 1: know like it's a million things have to go right
- 8:28Speaker 1: for him to actually win MVP, but like it's, you
- 8:30Speaker 1: could squint and see a world where it happens. I,
- 8:35Speaker 1: I know I'm a bit of a Homer on this,
- 8:37Speaker 1: but I think a few things, Caleb's physical talent is undeniable.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Anybody who could watch it and it can see the
- 8:44Speaker 1: highs and be like, yeah, that guy can do everything
- 8:46Speaker 1: on the field. If he can improve from 68 sacks
- 8:52Speaker 1: in year one, to 24 in year two, year one
- 8:56Speaker 1: with Ben Johnson, right? He was the most sacked quarterback
- 8:58Speaker 1: since David Carr, and then he became excellent at it,
- 9:03Speaker 1: given how much he throws, how much he scrambles, all
- 9:05Speaker 1: of those things. The interception rate has stayed really low,
- 9:09Speaker 1: and he clearly, again, has the physical talents, the clutchness,
- 9:12Speaker 1: whatever you want to say about it. If he improves
- 9:15Speaker 1: that much from year one to year two, year one
- 9:17Speaker 1: with Ben Johnson... If you agree, and I know you
- 9:20Speaker 1: and I have disagreed a little bit on the genius
- 9:22Speaker 1: of the boy wonder Ben Johnson from your time with
- 9:24Speaker 1: the Lions, but I happen to think that as an
- 9:26Speaker 1: offensive play caller and quarterback-friendly coach, Ben Johnson is knocking
- 9:32Speaker 1: on the door that Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan and
- 9:36Speaker 1: Andy Reid are on the other side of it. I
- 9:38Speaker 1: think he is going to be that level of offensive coach.
- 9:41Speaker 1: So if I have that level of quarterback talent with
- 9:43Speaker 1: that level of offensive coach, I don't see him backsliding. Like,
- 9:48Speaker 1: I think he's going to keep improving. I will be
- 9:50Speaker 1: floored if he doesn't.
- 9:52Speaker 2: So let me say this about Big Brain Ben.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 9:56Speaker 2: I feel better about Big Brain Ben than I did.
- 10:00Speaker 2: going in and the reason is after watching a year
- 10:03Speaker 2: of the lions without ben johnson i realized how much
- 10:08Speaker 2: of the stuff that made me call him big brain
- 10:11Speaker 2: ben was actually dan camp.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Oh yeah. Interesting.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Like a lot of those crazy play calls and like,
- 10:19Speaker 2: why are we doing this at this time? I watched
- 10:21Speaker 2: Dan Campbell do that stuff without Ben Johnson. And they
- 10:24Speaker 2: made me stop and say, okay, maybe, maybe I have
- 10:26Speaker 2: put too much on big brain Ben when a lot
- 10:29Speaker 2: of this goes to Dano.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:31Speaker 2: So, okay. Like I feel better about him in that,
- 10:35Speaker 2: you know, in that way. My thing with Williams at
- 10:38Speaker 2: this point is, He is a moments guy. People are
- 10:41Speaker 2: going to hear me say this a lot. I had
- 10:43Speaker 2: a had an epiphany over the summer watching the World
- 10:45Speaker 2: Cup about the significance of being a moments guy.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Where I have a high value for consistency. But there's
- 10:50Speaker 2: something about the guy that can just give you moments.
- 10:52Speaker 2: And Caleb Williams can absolutely give you moments. And what
- 10:54Speaker 2: you hope for if you're the Bears under those circumstances
- 10:58Speaker 2: is that when the moments aren't happening, at least he's
- 11:01Speaker 2: not being actively detrimental. Taking 68 sacks is being actively detrimental.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Not taking those sacks and not throwing picks, but being
- 11:12Speaker 2: able to make the big splash. In a way, what
- 11:15Speaker 2: you're asking for, what you hope the floor for Caleb
- 11:20Speaker 2: Williams is, is like a Joe Flacco, like when Joe
- 11:23Speaker 2: Flacco was very good type Right. Which is to say
- 11:28Speaker 2: you can win a Super Bowl with Joe Flacco because
- 11:30Speaker 2: Joe Flacco could make big plays. It could get the
- 11:32Speaker 2: ball down the field. And you saw that during that postseason.
- 11:35Speaker 2: You saw them also go to conference championships with Joe
- 11:37Speaker 2: Flacco where he was not the reason why they lost. Right.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Like this is not I'm saying this as a floor
- 11:43Speaker 2: for what you hope for for Caleb Williams is that right.
- 11:46Speaker 2: If he minimizes the mistakes and just simply shows the
- 11:50Speaker 2: ability that he show the ceiling, obviously, is much higher.
- 11:55Speaker 2: But what you hope for at this point is after
- 11:59Speaker 2: last year that, okay, now maybe you're happy with a
- 12:06Speaker 2: couple of more interceptions because he's playing at a high
- 12:09Speaker 2: enough level to try to do more things, not just
- 12:12Speaker 2: because he's forced to by circumstance and situations, and you
- 12:15Speaker 2: hope that that raises the ceiling in some total, which
- 12:18Speaker 2: I think is totally possible.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Yeah, and I guess the only thing I agree with
- 12:23Speaker 1: you on, like, Listen, Aaron Rodgers is 45 touchdowns, six
- 12:26Speaker 1: interception season. Like that's one of the greatest seasons I've
- 12:29Speaker 1: ever seen. Not normal, but I think that's what Caleb
- 12:33Speaker 1: is shooting for. He talks about emulating his game after Rodgers.
- 12:36Speaker 1: You said that is totally possible. Why is it not likely? Like,
- 12:43Speaker 1: I just, he clearly going from Matt Eberflus to Ben
- 12:48Speaker 1: Johnson improved so much. went from 20 touchdowns to 30
- 12:53Speaker 1: total touchdowns. The sack numbers, like I talked about, won
- 12:56Speaker 1: a playoff game, got better as the year went on.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Loveland is young. Adunze is young. It's a young group
- 13:02Speaker 1: of skill guys around him. They all are in now
- 13:04Speaker 1: their second year with Ben Johnson. Why would I not
- 13:08Speaker 1: expect the curve to keep going, the exponential growth? I'm
- 13:14Speaker 1: sure I'm missing something, but why would he not get
- 13:17Speaker 1: better given everything that he has going for him with
- 13:20Speaker 1: himself and that's around him.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Oh, it's just that quarterback development, especially in statistical senses,
- 13:25Speaker 2: is typically nonlinear.
- 13:28Speaker 1: I feel you. Listen, I think that the Bears are
- 13:30Speaker 1: going to regress. People will hear me and say I'm
- 13:32Speaker 1: a homer. Here's where they will for sure regress. They
- 13:35Speaker 1: will not lead the league in takeaways again. They will
- 13:39Speaker 1: not lead the league in fourth quarter comebacks again. four
- 13:43Speaker 1: out of five offensive linemen for them last year, played
- 13:45Speaker 1: over 90% of the snaps. Like, they will be more
- 13:48Speaker 1: injured in front of Caleb.
- 13:50Speaker 2: But will they be better? Because part of the problem
- 13:53Speaker 2: was especially the ones up the middle, right?
- 13:55Speaker 1: Well, so, Dahlman had the surprise retirement at center, which was,
- 14:01Speaker 1: which is a huge blow. Because they went out and
- 14:03Speaker 1: got Garrett Bradbury, who's like a replacement level player and
- 14:07Speaker 1: not very good. And then they had to use the
- 14:09Speaker 1: second round pick on the kid out of Iowa, Logan Jones.
- 14:11Speaker 1: We'll see who ends up playing. And they don't know
- 14:14Speaker 1: who the left tackle is right now. So that's that's bad.
- 14:19Speaker 1: That is that is definitely they got a lot of names,
- 14:21Speaker 1: but none of them are all that inspiring. Left guard
- 14:24Speaker 1: is Joe Tooney. He's excellent. One of the best offensive
- 14:26Speaker 1: linemen in football. Darnell Wright might now be the best
- 14:29Speaker 1: right tackle in football, given that Panay Sewell moved from
- 14:32Speaker 1: right tackle to left tackle. He was second team all
- 14:34Speaker 1: pro last year. He's excellent. And right guard Jonah Jackson
- 14:37Speaker 1: is pretty good. So I'd say three of the five
- 14:39Speaker 1: spot two of the five spots are excellent. one of
- 14:42Speaker 1: the five spots is good and center and left tackle
- 14:46Speaker 1: are question marks, which is bad given that those are
- 14:48Speaker 1: probably the two most important spots on the offensive line.
- 14:51Speaker 1: So it's definitely a question for the bears this year,
- 14:55Speaker 1: but I also, the defense was crazy injured last year.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Like I don't think the defense will be excellent, but
- 15:00Speaker 1: I do think they will be a little bit better.
- 15:02Speaker 1: And I expect Caleb to make a huge leap to
- 15:04Speaker 1: cover up for some of those areas of obvious regression.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Now we'll say this fair or not. Um, I feel
- 15:13Speaker 2: like he is not. And I don't know if it's
- 15:16Speaker 2: just because he was good last year. I'm not sure.
- 15:19Speaker 2: But he's not getting like the optimistic outlook that I
- 15:23Speaker 2: feel like can come if you so choose coming into
- 15:26Speaker 2: this year. Year two Caleb Williams is better than year
- 15:29Speaker 2: two Josh Allen was in Buffalo. And year two Caleb
- 15:33Speaker 2: Williams was better in the postseason than year two Josh
- 15:35Speaker 2: Allen was. But every year we walk into it just
- 15:38Speaker 2: with the hope for Josh Allen. We still doing that
- 15:39Speaker 2: shit now. We going into year nine and it's still
- 15:42Speaker 2: cross your fingers and hope that hope that everything goes
- 15:44Speaker 2: right for Josh this year. Right. Caleb Williams, for whatever
- 15:48Speaker 2: the reasons may be, he does not necessarily receive that.
- 15:51Speaker 2: And that's why I had him on the clock part.
- 15:52Speaker 2: It's not even because I'm skeptical of him. Like, I
- 15:54Speaker 2: think he showed me a lot last year. in terms
- 15:58Speaker 2: of where I think that this can ultimately go for him.
- 16:02Speaker 2: I'm not as high on him as I was when
- 16:03Speaker 2: he was a sophomore in college, where I think the
- 16:06Speaker 2: ultimate results can be, but it'd be really, really good.
- 16:10Speaker 2: I'm just curious to see how that's going to go
- 16:12Speaker 2: with a measure of pressure, especially when it's pressure on
- 16:15Speaker 2: one of them teams that usually isn't good. You know
- 16:18Speaker 2: what I mean? Especially in a giant city, it's a
- 16:21Speaker 2: little bit different because people are on edge about those things.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Oh, dude, I mean, we've crowned him. Like, if Caleb, like,
- 16:34Speaker 1: drafting Mitch Trubisky over Patrick Mahomes is a haunting thing, okay? Like,
- 16:39Speaker 1: that's just, that scars a generation.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Why don't you say Deshaun Watson? You could have taken
- 16:44Speaker 2: Deshaun Watson.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Dude, I was, there's some, there's some radio tape of
- 16:48Speaker 1: me campaigning for Deshaun Watson.
- 16:51Speaker 2: I mean, that would have been good and bad at
- 16:52Speaker 2: the same time, you know what I mean?
- 16:53Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, no doubt. I don't know if I've told
- 16:57Speaker 1: you this story before, but I've told it publicly, but
- 16:59Speaker 1: I find it to be hilarious because the joke is
- 17:01Speaker 1: at my expense. But like literally. Seven to 10 days
- 17:07Speaker 1: before the scandal story broke about Deshaun Watson. I did
- 17:14Speaker 1: a segment. I'm like, it was just a what would
- 17:17Speaker 1: you do? What would you give up, you know, for
- 17:20Speaker 1: a Bears franchise quarterback? And I said I would trade
- 17:23Speaker 1: my dog for Deshaun Watson. A, the dog was a
- 17:28Speaker 1: birthday present for my wife. B, like, Deshaun Watson has, like,
- 17:36Speaker 1: I think he's got, like, 19 total touchdowns since. Like,
- 17:40Speaker 1: it was just, that take aged like an avocado. It
- 17:42Speaker 1: was horrible.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Oh, man, that's crazy.
- 17:45Speaker 1: But no, we're going to see. I was like, I
- 17:46Speaker 1: would give him up. I was like, Deshaun Watson, he's
- 17:50Speaker 1: 23 at 5,000 yards with Bill O'Brien. You know, I
- 17:53Speaker 1: was like, he was a captain in college. Like, I
- 17:56Speaker 1: was like.
- 17:57Speaker 2: No, it all flipped at once. It all flipped at once.
- 18:01Speaker 1: I mean, he was like the model, like the story
- 18:04Speaker 1: of like, it was just like him and his mom.
- 18:07Speaker 1: And they grew up in the Habitat for Humanity house
- 18:10Speaker 1: that work done and paid for. And like now Deshaun
- 18:12Speaker 1: was taking care of his mom and giving back. And
- 18:15Speaker 1: I was like, this guy is perfect. How could you
- 18:17Speaker 1: possibly pass on it?
- 18:19Speaker 2: And then we found out he was nasty.
- 18:23Speaker 1: And then we found out.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Yeah, we learned he was a little nasty, right?
- 18:27Speaker 1: Yeah, we found out. It goes.
- 18:28Speaker 2: I mentioned Josh Allen.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Hey, man, they just fired the coach that you've had
- 18:33Speaker 2: for nine years, right?
- 18:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:34Speaker 2: The coach that, I mean, keep in mind, the coach
- 18:36Speaker 2: that went to the playoffs with Tyrod Taylor and the
- 18:39Speaker 2: ill-fated half of the Peterman in 2017.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:44Speaker 2: It's basically been treated by all that this team has
- 18:47Speaker 2: let Josh down. Even though Josh, in major postseason moments,
- 18:51Speaker 2: passed the wild card round, as our buddy Nick will
- 18:53Speaker 2: tell people, has not necessarily been great, right? Yes, there
- 18:59Speaker 2: was the 13-second game. There have been things. But the
- 19:03Speaker 2: general consensus around this has always been that the Bills
- 19:07Speaker 2: are letting Josh Allen down, basically. It's almost as though
- 19:09Speaker 2: Josh Allen deserves what the end result you know, the
- 19:13Speaker 2: highest end result that is possible. Under most circumstances, if
- 19:18Speaker 2: you're the quarterback and you've had a coach that's had
- 19:20Speaker 2: the level of success that you had and they fired
- 19:22Speaker 2: him to keep you and they hired the coach that
- 19:25Speaker 2: you wanted, they're treating you like an NBA player, we
- 19:28Speaker 2: will be looking at you like, hey, it's kick-ass or
- 19:30Speaker 2: else time.
- 19:33Speaker 1: No question. And it is right. Like brew on the show,
- 19:37Speaker 1: you know, called S Bob Super Bowl or bust like
- 19:40Speaker 1: Josh Allen is Super Bowl or bust. Obviously, I think
- 19:43Speaker 1: that like if you were going to say my homes
- 19:45Speaker 1: isn't the best quarterback in football anymore because he hasn't
- 19:48Speaker 1: had an MVP yet. regular season since 2022, hasn't had
- 19:52Speaker 1: a consistent stretch since he was Super Bowl MVP in 2023,
- 19:56Speaker 1: and he was unbelievable in those playoffs. I do think
- 19:59Speaker 1: that it's totally fair to say that Josh Allen is
- 20:01Speaker 1: the best quarterback in football right now if you're not
- 20:05Speaker 1: going to grandfather Mahomes into it. And I definitely on
- 20:09Speaker 1: the spectrum of Josh Allen critic to apologist probably come
- 20:13Speaker 1: out on the side of apologist. The turnovers in that
- 20:17Speaker 1: playoff game against Denver. He has to wear them. No question.
- 20:21Speaker 1: The guy's got 29 touchdowns and six picks in the playoffs.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Generally, but when you, when you break them down.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Heavily, heavily skewed toward the seven seed.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Sure. At home. Sure. I, he, Three of his five
- 20:37Speaker 1: playoff losses, he's scored 29 or more points. His defense
- 20:42Speaker 1: has given up over 30. Josh Allen is not Lamar
- 20:48Speaker 1: Jackson in that when Lamar Jackson's playoff numbers plummet. Josh
- 20:55Speaker 1: Allen's playoff numbers, you could say he bum slays a
- 20:57Speaker 1: little bit. Sure. Doesn't get the one seed, has to
- 21:00Speaker 1: play a wild card round. Playoffs have expanded. First round
- 21:02Speaker 1: gets watered down. I'm here for all of that and
- 21:05Speaker 1: agree with all of it. He definitely... feasts on some
- 21:08Speaker 1: famine no question but lamar jackson his playoff numbers do
- 21:12Speaker 1: not resemble his regular season numbers no josh allen's does
- 21:17Speaker 1: like like so i i do i do generally speaking
- 21:21Speaker 1: believe that josh allen is a good playoff quarterback and
- 21:26Speaker 1: i will be shocked if he doesn't one day win
- 21:29Speaker 1: a lombardi trophy um mcdermott getting fired you know life's
- 21:35Speaker 1: not fair I guess, but there was clearly a lot
- 21:39Speaker 1: that went on in that locker room after that game.
- 21:41Speaker 1: The defense has given up a ton in playoff moments,
- 21:45Speaker 1: and sometimes change just needs to happen. They brought in
- 21:49Speaker 1: Jim Leonard, the dude from Denver, to be their new
- 21:51Speaker 1: defensive coordinator. We'll see. But yeah, it's Josh's show, man.
- 21:56Speaker 1: He's on the clock reputationally. Obviously not in any sort
- 22:00Speaker 1: of financial way or not the quarterback of the Bills way,
- 22:03Speaker 1: but he's on the clock reputationally.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Yeah, all I'm saying is this. We're in a world
- 22:07Speaker 2: where Lamar Jackson is on the clock. Yeah. There's no
- 22:15Speaker 2: way to me that those guys are on different schedules,
- 22:18Speaker 2: no matter what you say about postseason performance. The ultimate
- 22:23Speaker 2: criticism of each kind of sort of remains the same,
- 22:25Speaker 2: where is it Josh Allen's fault that they lost those games?
- 22:29Speaker 2: Not necessarily. It ain't his fault they won them either.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Like with the level of caliber of quarterback.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Yeah. They were supposed to be. Yeah.
- 22:38Speaker 2: At this point, you're supposed to be the guy, especially
- 22:41Speaker 2: of like the other guys, Bo Nix, but you're supposed
- 22:43Speaker 2: to be the reason why they win these. Now, Josh early,
- 22:47Speaker 2: there was the terrible game in 2019 against Houston, where
- 22:51Speaker 2: he just completely lost his mind at the end of
- 22:53Speaker 2: the game. And he is still capable of the occasional
- 22:56Speaker 2: freak out. Josh Allen moments. Lamar Jackson has looked overwhelmed
- 23:00Speaker 2: in post seasons, but I feel like that has turned up. Like,
- 23:04Speaker 2: What you say about Josh Allen, I think that there's
- 23:07Speaker 2: been a clear turn with Lamar in that game that
- 23:10Speaker 2: they blew in Buffalo, right, with Mark Andrews dropping the touchdown.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Lamar started slow, got that shit all the way back together,
- 23:18Speaker 2: and I do not think that if that's Josh Allen,
- 23:21Speaker 2: we talk about that game purely in the context of
- 23:23Speaker 2: how Mark Andrews let Lamar Jackson down, right, in a
- 23:27Speaker 2: way that would almost wipe out everything that had happened previously.
- 23:31Speaker 1: Yeah, Lamar played well enough to win that game, even
- 23:34Speaker 1: if he struggled early.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm just saying, they're on the same clock, at
- 23:38Speaker 2: least over here. They're on the same clock. I get it. Now,
- 23:41Speaker 2: Lamar's on a different clock because of the contract, but
- 23:44Speaker 2: to me, it is comical, the idea that Baltimore or
- 23:47Speaker 2: anybody around Baltimore would for a moment raise the possibility
- 23:52Speaker 2: of maybe we'll want to get somebody else.
- 23:56Speaker 1: I agree that, that, that is that. I mean, listen,
- 23:59Speaker 1: Lamar is one of the toughest, if not the toughest
- 24:01Speaker 1: players in the whole league to game plan against. He's,
- 24:04Speaker 1: he's spectacular. Like Lamar, if you told me I got
- 24:07Speaker 1: a given Sunday, I'm getting a quarterback's best. It's hard
- 24:13Speaker 1: not to take Lamar Jackson because his best is unbelievably
- 24:17Speaker 1: high in the moment. Like I said, questions in the playoffs.
- 24:21Speaker 1: This is something that I don't know if you'll agree
- 24:25Speaker 1: with or not. Whose 30s will be better?
- 24:32Speaker 2: I think both of them have the potential of a drop.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Both are heavily dependent on athleticism.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Yep.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Both, I think, are better at like doing the thing
- 24:46Speaker 2: from the pocket than they get credit for. Um, I
- 24:49Speaker 2: think Lamar actually operates a little better on timing stuff
- 24:52Speaker 2: than Josh Allen does. Like you don't see a lot
- 24:54Speaker 2: of Josh Allen.
- 24:55Speaker 1: One, two, three, throw one, two, three, four, five, throw.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Like the big thing with Josh Allen is if you
- 25:00Speaker 2: go send somebody, you better bring his big ass down
- 25:02Speaker 2: and you probably can't.
- 25:04Speaker 1: So now, you.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Know, what are you going to do? Both of them
- 25:08Speaker 2: are susceptible to a, well, you remember you had that
- 25:11Speaker 2: one injury and then nothing was the same.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Yeah. So I, Both of them is a bit of
- 25:17Speaker 1: a cop-out.
- 25:19Speaker 2: I don't think that's a cop-out at all. I think
- 25:22Speaker 2: it holds for both of them.
- 25:24Speaker 1: So I think that they're both unbelievable running quarterbacks, right?
- 25:29Speaker 1: To your point, they both seriously rely on athleticism. Josh
- 25:33Speaker 1: is up there. I was just looking at it the
- 25:35Speaker 1: other day. Lamar is the all-time rushing leader for quarterbacks.
- 25:40Speaker 1: He has the most rushing first downs of any quarterback
- 25:43Speaker 1: since he entered the league. But Josh is one behind him.
- 25:45Speaker 1: in terms of rushing first downs. Josh is obviously ahead
- 25:48Speaker 1: of him for rushing touchdowns because he kind of does
- 25:51Speaker 1: the Jalen Hurts thing where there's a lot of like one, two,
- 25:54Speaker 1: three yarders inside the five, that sort of thing. Lamar
- 25:59Speaker 1: last year, when he was playing through the injuries, the
- 26:02Speaker 1: rushing first downs, the rushing yards, the rushing attempts, they
- 26:04Speaker 1: were all career lows, but he still played in 13 games.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Like he clearly was not running as much playing through
- 26:09Speaker 1: the nagging hamstring, whatever. And a lot of it dropped
- 26:13Speaker 1: in terms of some of the passing efficiencies. in his
- 26:16Speaker 1: MVP year two years ago, all of those passing stats,
- 26:19Speaker 1: to your point, he was amazing. Yards per attempt, QBR,
- 26:24Speaker 1: passer rating, led the league in all of them. Like,
- 26:25Speaker 1: Lamar can pass the football. I'm not saying he can't.
- 26:28Speaker 1: But what I wonder is, whose passing is more helped
- 26:35Speaker 1: by the threat of their running? Like, you have to
- 26:38Speaker 1: defend them differently all over the field because of their running.
- 26:42Speaker 1: And I think that's Lamar's Because Lamar will take off
- 26:46Speaker 1: and beat you for 40 yards. So you've got to
- 26:48Speaker 1: really worry about Lamar's running at the 30, at the 50,
- 26:53Speaker 1: all over the field. Whereas Josh is such a dangerous
- 26:57Speaker 1: red zone running threat that I would bet on Josh
- 27:01Speaker 1: having a Ben Roethlisberger 30s. Just a big dude who
- 27:06Speaker 1: guys are going to bounce off of and he'll be
- 27:07Speaker 1: strong forever and he can stand there in the pocket.
- 27:10Speaker 1: I would take Josh's 30s over Lamar's 30s. I can
- 27:14Speaker 1: see the argument for it.
- 27:15Speaker 2: I think that as the 30s go on, the threat
- 27:19Speaker 2: of the big of the big run from Jackson diminishes.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Yeah. Right.
- 27:25Speaker 2: I think he as passer remains very, very good. I
- 27:29Speaker 2: think that I think that people need to take a
- 27:31Speaker 2: look at what the college offense was that he ran.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Because I think that people have a tendency to think
- 27:37Speaker 2: that he was out there running like a Chip Kelly
- 27:39Speaker 2: scheme out there at Louisville. And instead, it was the
- 27:41Speaker 2: incredibly difficult Bobby Petrino drop back and pass. And it
- 27:46Speaker 2: wasn't really a whole lot of scrambling. It was a
- 27:48Speaker 2: lot of stay in the pocket and make it happen.
- 27:51Speaker 2: And every year, Lamar has been better and better and
- 27:53Speaker 2: better at staying in the pocket and getting that done.
- 27:56Speaker 2: I don't have a great gauge on how much of
- 28:00Speaker 2: that is a pure function of the fact that oh,
- 28:03Speaker 2: by the way, he might run 40 yards on you, right? Like,
- 28:05Speaker 2: does that put teams in positions where they can't run
- 28:07Speaker 2: as much man because you can't have those dudes turn
- 28:09Speaker 2: their back on him because suddenly he's going to run
- 28:11Speaker 2: behind them? I think that also applies with, like, that
- 28:14Speaker 2: applies greatly also with Josh Allen. I do get your
- 28:17Speaker 2: big thing, though, is that he's a big, giant guy
- 28:19Speaker 2: that'll be out there playing in the cold and, you know,
- 28:23Speaker 2: it can keep going, maybe. The real question, I think,
- 28:27Speaker 2: that answers this is, do we think either of them
- 28:29Speaker 2: is going to suffer, like, some.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Sort of big, giant lower body injury yeah and obviously
- 28:34Speaker 1: no one wants to predict it who the hell know
- 28:37Speaker 1: who the hell knows i will say like i think
- 28:39Speaker 1: that uh and again this is just for right now
- 28:42Speaker 1: like lamar i think the best obviously derrick henry father
- 28:48Speaker 1: time we'll see like he's unbelievable yeah but the best
- 28:52Speaker 1: help that lamar could have this year is i think
- 28:54Speaker 1: their defense can be excellent i don't see much of
- 28:58Speaker 1: a path for Buffalo's defense being excellent. Josh has an
- 29:04Speaker 1: awesome offensive line. James Cook is a running back. They
- 29:08Speaker 1: added DJ more. I think Josh has much better help
- 29:12Speaker 1: on the offensive side of the ball than Lamar does
- 29:16Speaker 1: going into this year. Zay Flowers, I'm just not a
- 29:20Speaker 1: fan of. He's just too small. Too small, too inconsistent,
- 29:24Speaker 1: runs backwards when he catches the ball too much. I'm like, dude,
- 29:27Speaker 1: go forward. What are you doing? Lost likely, lost Linderbaum.
- 29:33Speaker 1: I just counted on that rookie out of Penn State
- 29:35Speaker 1: who everybody loves, but you're still starting a rookie and
- 29:38Speaker 1: you used a top 15 pick on him, so he's
- 29:40Speaker 1: got to be great immediately. Derrick Henry, 33, I think,
- 29:44Speaker 1: this year. 32-33. They are asking Lamar to carry a
- 29:51Speaker 1: huge piece of it offensively where I do think Josh
- 29:54Speaker 1: has more help going into the year on the offensive
- 29:56Speaker 1: side of the ball. The flip side, of course, is
- 29:59Speaker 1: Can't stop the run. Cannot stop the run. And I
- 30:03Speaker 1: do think that Minter, the new coach in Baltimore... he
- 30:07Speaker 1: overachieved with the chargers defense and now he's got way
- 30:10Speaker 1: better talent in the, on the rate. Like I think
- 30:13Speaker 1: the Ravens defense could be top five this year. That
- 30:16Speaker 1: would help Lamar a lot.
- 30:17Speaker 2: It is entirely possible. And we don't think about this
- 30:19Speaker 2: because of reputation, but it isn't, I'm shocked by how
- 30:22Speaker 2: excited everybody in New York is about hiring a coach
- 30:25Speaker 2: that somebody just fired. Like, I don't feel like this
- 30:28Speaker 2: is Andy Reed leaving Philadelphia.
- 30:30Speaker 1: It is definitely not. You know what I mean?
- 30:31Speaker 2: Like, I just, I just don't think it's that. I
- 30:33Speaker 2: just don't think it's that sort of situation. Um, Lamar
- 30:36Speaker 2: Jackson saved John Harbaugh's job in 2018. And I think
- 30:40Speaker 2: a question that we're going to see is going to
- 30:42Speaker 2: be interesting to see if it gets answered is whether
- 30:44Speaker 2: or not much of what we've seen for Lamar has
- 30:47Speaker 2: been in spite or for the Ravens has been in
- 30:49Speaker 2: spite of the head coach as opposed to being because
- 30:52Speaker 2: of the head coach, which is what I think that
- 30:54Speaker 2: we have kind of rolled with as a default assumption.
- 30:58Speaker 2: But it was time for a new head coach.
- 31:01Speaker 1: I totally agree. And as someone who owned a lot
- 31:04Speaker 1: of Justin Herbert stock, I was always amazed at what
- 31:07Speaker 1: Minter was able to do with the defensive injuries that
- 31:10Speaker 1: they kept having with the Chargers. I think he's a
- 31:12Speaker 1: really good coach. So I do think Baltimore has a
- 31:15Speaker 1: very high defensive ceiling.
- 31:17Speaker 2: All right, coming up next, we'll talk about what other

- 36:30Speaker 2: All right, we are back with Danny Park. Let's check
- 36:34Speaker 2: out First Things First on FS1. um thinking about like
- 36:39Speaker 2: quarterbacks where it feels like they are on the clock
- 36:42Speaker 2: i want to avoid talking about minnesota because they're not
- 36:45Speaker 2: good but i am kind of fascinated by what's going
- 36:48Speaker 2: on up there like jj mccarthy on the clock at
- 36:52Speaker 2: 24 he he walked in and they threw his ass
- 36:57Speaker 2: immediately on the clock because they don't like.
- 36:59Speaker 1: Him dude he's played 10 games I've never seen it.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Like only Josh Rosen and Josh Rosen even was a
- 37:06Speaker 2: special case because the next coach came in who ran
- 37:08Speaker 2: a particular style of offense and.
- 37:11Speaker 1: They got the number one pick. Yes. Right. That was
- 37:13Speaker 1: a huge piece of that. Like, Oh, well we have
- 37:17Speaker 1: this limited athlete. We can now draft Kyler Murray. Right.
- 37:20Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean, Kevin O'Connell respected offensive coach. They
- 37:24Speaker 1: traded up. I'll be at one spot, but traded up
- 37:27Speaker 1: to take JJ, JJ McCarthy and, 10 games and they
- 37:31Speaker 1: might be on the outs. But I will say, like,
- 37:34Speaker 1: I will be floored if J.J. McCarthy starts week one.
- 37:37Speaker 1: Absolutely gobsmacked by it. Kyler Murray could have been a jet.
- 37:43Speaker 1: He could have been a dolphin. Like, who knows? Maybe
- 37:46Speaker 1: he could have been a stealer if things went differently. Like,
- 37:49Speaker 1: I don't think Kyler Murray... Now, I know that he
- 37:52Speaker 1: would believe in himself that he could beat out J.J. McCarthy,
- 37:55Speaker 1: and they've got an amazing defense, and he gets to
- 37:57Speaker 1: throw to Justin Jefferson and play in a dome. There's
- 37:59Speaker 1: lots of reasons to want to be a Viking over
- 38:01Speaker 1: a Dolphin or a Jet. I get that. But Kyler
- 38:05Speaker 1: Murray is more talented than J.J. McCarthy. He's going to
- 38:08Speaker 1: win that job.
- 38:09Speaker 2: He had a better year last year than J.J.
- 38:11Speaker 1: McCarthy. Of course. Look, look. Of course. This one is easy.
- 38:14Speaker 2: Truth is, best case scenario for the Vikings is that J.J.
- 38:17Speaker 2: McCarthy wins the job. You know what I mean? Like
- 38:20Speaker 2: that he comes in and wins it. Worst case scenario
- 38:24Speaker 2: is that J.J. McCarthy wins the job. That either means
- 38:28Speaker 2: something has gone spectacularly or something has gone terribly. And
- 38:33Speaker 2: I don't know, you and I have never really talked
- 38:34Speaker 2: about Kyler Murray, but I think people have turned on
- 38:38Speaker 2: Kyler Murray because they don't like him. Like that's the
- 38:41Speaker 2: big issue that he has. I've never seen a quarterback
- 38:43Speaker 2: who's like the guys that played with him so willing
- 38:46Speaker 2: in public to be like, no, no, no, I don't
- 38:50Speaker 2: know about that guy. But I just watched Sam Darnold
- 38:54Speaker 2: win a championship and people are asking if Kyler Murray
- 38:57Speaker 2: can be the next Sam Darnold. Sam Darnold had never
- 39:00Speaker 2: been as good as Kyler Murray was when Kyler Murray
- 39:02Speaker 2: was young. And I'm not convinced that if you put
- 39:05Speaker 2: Kyler Murray on those same Seahawks, that they don't win
- 39:09Speaker 2: the Super Bowl. Like this was not because of the
- 39:11Speaker 2: positives of Sam Darnold necessarily. I'm just saying all that
- 39:14Speaker 2: to say Kyler Murray is still an NFL quarterback. I
- 39:19Speaker 2: understand that somebody just paid all this money so that
- 39:22Speaker 2: he would not play, but he's going to be the
- 39:25Speaker 2: starter for them. And they're going to have a chance
- 39:27Speaker 2: to win a lot up there because they won a
- 39:30Speaker 2: lot up there last year with flat bummery at quarterback.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Yeah, and won 14 games the year before.
- 39:38Speaker 2: And listen, they're not great. Sam Darnold, no matter what
- 39:40Speaker 2: anybody tells you.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Yeah, right. Especially late. And listen, Sam Darnold, I do think,
- 39:45Speaker 1: like you said, he's not on the clock because he
- 39:46Speaker 1: won the Super Bowl. I would have said he's not
- 39:48Speaker 1: on the clock after that NFC championship game. He was
- 39:51Speaker 1: spectacular in that game against the Rams. So I like,
- 39:54Speaker 1: I gotta, I gotta give it up for him. But,
- 39:57Speaker 1: but Kyler, I, I am largely with you. Like part
- 40:01Speaker 1: of it is circumstance. Like, I don't know that I
- 40:03Speaker 1: would think that Kyler Murray would be great if he
- 40:05Speaker 1: was on the jets.
- 40:07Speaker 2: But no, but I don't know if Josh Allen would
- 40:09Speaker 2: be great on the jet.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Right, exactly. But like, Throwing to Justin Jefferson and Jordan
- 40:14Speaker 1: Addison with Kevin O'Connell calling the plays and a Brian
- 40:17Speaker 1: Flores defense behind you, that team has a high floor.
- 40:23Speaker 1: I don't know if they're going to win the Super
- 40:25Speaker 1: Bowl because I think, I mean, we saw it last year,
- 40:27Speaker 1: you could win nine games and finish last in that division.
- 40:30Speaker 1: So a huge piece of the NFC North is just
- 40:33Speaker 1: going to be injury luck and how the ball bounces
- 40:35Speaker 1: in the division games. The division is so good top
- 40:39Speaker 1: to bottom. But Kyler Murray, represents a much higher ceiling
- 40:45Speaker 1: than anything JJ McCarthy has exhibited like that one that's
- 40:50Speaker 1: just an easy one to me at this point yeah.
- 40:53Speaker 2: By the way in that division framing.
- 40:55Speaker 1: Like I don't know if I get to throw one
- 40:56Speaker 1: out to.
- 40:56Speaker 2: You of course you do okay by the way Jordan
- 40:59Speaker 2: Love you're not on the clock Jared Goff your life
- 41:01Speaker 2: is the clock go.
- 41:02Speaker 1: Ahead yeah all right.
- 41:06Speaker 2: CJ Stroud on the clock no question.
- 41:11Speaker 1: Maybe the most literal?
- 41:12Speaker 2: Yeah, he's on the hot clock. Like, calling the clock
- 41:15Speaker 2: doesn't feel sufficient.
- 41:17Speaker 1: Well, but, like, it is fascinating. Like, okay. They're like, well,
- 41:23Speaker 1: they said, like, it wasn't much of a debate to
- 41:25Speaker 1: pick up the option. I said, well, no shit. If
- 41:28Speaker 1: you didn't pick up the option, it would be like,
- 41:31Speaker 1: he's gone. He's off the team. CJ Stroud, his rookie year,
- 41:39Speaker 1: I said at the time, I thought people were overrating
- 41:43Speaker 1: it a little bit. It was, it was impressive. And
- 41:45Speaker 1: for what it wasn't like, he didn't throw a lot
- 41:47Speaker 1: of interceptions. I think he finished that season with like
- 41:49Speaker 1: five interceptions or something like that. And it was like
- 41:53Speaker 1: 2021 touchdowns. I think five or six of them happened
- 41:55Speaker 1: in one game. He was, he was like smart and
- 42:00Speaker 1: serviceable and fine and whatever. And since then, that's like
- 42:06Speaker 1: 20 plus games by and large, he's been bad. And
- 42:09Speaker 1: that is, yes, it has coincided with losing Tunsell and
- 42:13Speaker 1: bad offensive line play, and he's gotten hit a lot.
- 42:17Speaker 1: And the Tank Dell injury, Nico Collins injury, obviously it's
- 42:20Speaker 1: been rough. But they are the best defense in football.
- 42:24Speaker 2: They should be a Super Bowl contender with passable quarterback play.
- 42:29Speaker 1: Absolutely. I would say short-list Super Bowl contender. Best pass
- 42:36Speaker 1: rush duo in the NFL. Arguably best cornerback duo.
- 42:39Speaker 2: Hold on. Best pass rush duo for now.
- 42:43Speaker 1: Oh, in case Aaron Donald comes back? Yeah, fair. Fair.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Totally fair. Go ahead. Totally fair. Best pass rush duo
- 42:49Speaker 1: in the NFL for now. Arguably best cornerback duo in
- 42:52Speaker 1: the NFL. Great defensive play caller, head coach in D'Amico Reitz.
- 42:57Speaker 1: Returned all 11 starters from their defense. Like, they are,
- 43:01Speaker 1: their defense is nasty. So, I don't know. He can't
- 43:08Speaker 1: be the 24th best quarterback in the NFL. He has
- 43:13Speaker 1: to be. If he is a top half quarterback, if
- 43:15Speaker 1: he is better than Baker Mayfield, they absolutely can win
- 43:20Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. But look at what it's been for
- 43:23Speaker 1: the last basically two seasons, man. It's crazy, man. It
- 43:27Speaker 1: is crazy.
- 43:27Speaker 2: I'm not sure he's good. Yeah, I did think it
- 43:30Speaker 2: was fair to say that his first year was overrated,
- 43:32Speaker 2: but he was good.
- 43:34Speaker 1: He was.
- 43:35Speaker 2: The only reason they did not bench him in New
- 43:38Speaker 2: England is because you couldn't.
- 43:40Speaker 1: Yes. He was terrible.
- 43:42Speaker 2: There's a world where like, you just can't go back
- 43:45Speaker 2: from that. Right.
- 43:47Speaker 1: Like, and so like, listen, I, the reason it was good,
- 43:50Speaker 1: it was good, but people were talking about it. Like
- 43:52Speaker 1: it was like in the all time rookie quarterback seasons.
- 43:55Speaker 1: And I was like, no, like give me Cam Newton.
- 43:57Speaker 1: Give me Justin Herbert. Give me Jaden Daniels. Like, we've
- 44:01Speaker 1: seen a lot better rookie seasons that his rookie season
- 44:05Speaker 1: reminded me like Dak Prescott. Like it was like, Oh wow.
- 44:09Speaker 1: Like Dak came in, Dak didn't make mistakes. Dak kept
- 44:12Speaker 1: Tony Romo on the bench. Like that, that was impressive. Uh,
- 44:16Speaker 1: but like not, they were winning because of him necessarily.
- 44:20Speaker 1: But man, I just like, are we positive? He's going
- 44:24Speaker 1: to be better than Bryce young. Like, I don't know
- 44:26Speaker 1: how far I need to go with this. That's another guy,
- 44:28Speaker 1: his class also on the clock, but like, I just...
- 44:32Speaker 1: Alarm bells would be going off if I was a
- 44:34Speaker 1: Houston Texan fan.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and trust me, they will be.
- 44:39Speaker 1: You know, of course. And I know you know the
- 44:41Speaker 1: city and the market way better than I do. I just...
- 44:45Speaker 1: He's really likable. He's clearly very smart. But, like, I
- 44:50Speaker 1: don't know that there's a single quarterback... People talk about, like,
- 44:53Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield. Baker's playing for a lot of money.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:57Speaker 1: But Baker's probably... gonna get franchise tagged like you know like.
- 45:02Speaker 2: Baker yeah i'm not sure on that one.
- 45:04Speaker 1: Yeah we'll see we'll see but like baker's made over
- 45:07Speaker 1: 130 million dollars yes baker's baker's done enough for long
- 45:13Speaker 1: enough for enough places that baker mayfield is going to
- 45:15Speaker 1: be paid to be a starting quarterback and have probably
- 45:19Speaker 1: a couple of options beyond this year if he's not
- 45:21Speaker 1: franchised man i don't know about cj stroud I don't know.
- 45:26Speaker 1: The analytics people seem to disagree. They seem to think
- 45:29Speaker 1: that it is a product of circumstance and that he
- 45:31Speaker 1: will be better. But I have some serious questions about that, dude.
- 45:35Speaker 2: Man, he looked, it just looks so bad the last
- 45:38Speaker 2: time I saw him. Like I got to give him,
- 45:39Speaker 2: I have to give him the room to move away
- 45:43Speaker 2: from that because it just looks so awful. By the way,
- 45:45Speaker 2: Bo Nix, he's not on the clock.
- 45:49Speaker 1: Bo Nix is not only not on the clock.
- 45:51Speaker 2: Still don't believe it.
- 45:53Speaker 1: So I don't either, but Bo Nix, they had 11
- 45:57Speaker 1: wins in one score games, tied the NFL record. Eight
- 46:01Speaker 1: of those 11 wins came against non-playoff teams. You're watching
- 46:05Speaker 1: those Broncos games and it's like, they're losing to the
- 46:08Speaker 1: Giants in the fourth quarter? You know what I mean?
- 46:12Speaker 1: They played down to the Jets and the Giants and
- 46:14Speaker 1: the Raiders. They were so bad. And then he pulled
- 46:17Speaker 1: something out in the fourth quarter. But I will say,
- 46:22Speaker 1: In the quarterback class of Jaden Daniels, arguably the best
- 46:25Speaker 1: rookie season ever, Drake May, been in a Super Bowl,
- 46:30Speaker 1: MVP runner-up, Caleb Williams, spectacular talent with an MVP ceiling
- 46:36Speaker 1: who won a playoff game. Bo Nix has more yards,
- 46:40Speaker 1: more touchdowns, and more wins than all of them.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, yeah.
- 46:45Speaker 1: I kind of feel the same way. Yeah.
- 46:50Speaker 2: All numbers that don't go a long way with me,
- 46:52Speaker 2: it's a fair point to make. But I know this.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Sean Payton, and we were hearing the reports from Colin.
- 46:58Speaker 2: And if Colin's telling you, I think Sean Payton, da-da-da,
- 47:00Speaker 2: it's because Sean Payton, da-da-da.
- 47:02Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 47:03Speaker 2: And it was sounding like he wouldn't. I don't know
- 47:06Speaker 2: how far those games, how far that all went. I
- 47:10Speaker 2: don't have the answer. Drake May also. Ooh, that's going
- 47:13Speaker 2: to be an interesting one.
- 47:16Speaker 1: So Drake May, I would be pretty shocked if he
- 47:19Speaker 1: was bad.
- 47:20Speaker 2: I don't know if he's going to be bad, but
- 47:22Speaker 2: everything is set up for them to not be that good.
- 47:26Speaker 1: You mean like schedule being tougher and all that?
- 47:28Speaker 2: Schedule being tougher, you know, all the madness of the offseason,
- 47:32Speaker 2: whatever effect that does or does not have, but also
- 47:35Speaker 2: just generally how it tends to go for a team
- 47:36Speaker 2: that goes to the Super Bowl and does not win it.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:40Speaker 2: And by the way, with the quarterback who did not
- 47:42Speaker 2: play well in the postseason.
- 47:45Speaker 1: Yes, I do think that's at least we now have
- 47:47Speaker 1: our first data points on like if he is a
- 47:49Speaker 1: guy who is going to not be as good in
- 47:52Speaker 1: the playoffs or not. But like, I, I need to
- 47:54Speaker 1: see that like longer into your career before I'm going
- 47:56Speaker 1: to like assign that to you, you know, first trip
- 47:59Speaker 1: to the playoffs and all that. They, they, to me
- 48:02Speaker 1: seem like a pretty obvious better team, worse record, like
- 48:06Speaker 1: obviously worse record. They won 14 games, but like adding
- 48:10Speaker 1: a Dobbs and AJ Brown, another year, Drake may I
- 48:16Speaker 1: health on the offensive line. I I'd be surprised if
- 48:19Speaker 1: Drake may, had a bad season. But, you know.
- 48:23Speaker 2: Yeah, see, and that's funny, because I wouldn't... I wouldn't necessarily, like,
- 48:26Speaker 2: give up on him completely under those circumstances, but a
- 48:30Speaker 2: bad season is absolutely on the board. Hmm.
- 48:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:35Speaker 2: I love.
- 48:36Speaker 1: Listen, I love them coming out. I thought he was
- 48:39Speaker 1: really impressive last year with... Man, he did not have
- 48:42Speaker 1: a lot of help. Like, it was... It was what?
- 48:45Speaker 1: It was digs and booty, and, like, it was... Now
- 48:49Speaker 1: you get A.J. Brown and Romeo Dobbs. That is a
- 48:51Speaker 1: significant upgrade.
- 48:53Speaker 2: It is.
- 48:53Speaker 1: That is a significant upgrade. So he was able to
- 48:57Speaker 1: do what he was able to do last year, where, again,
- 48:59Speaker 1: he was like the analytic darling. All of the advanced
- 49:01Speaker 1: metrics pointed to him. Stafford had all of the counting stats.
- 49:05Speaker 1: It was like an interesting counting stats v. analytic MVP debate.
- 49:09Speaker 1: And Drake May took a lot of votes there, and
- 49:12Speaker 1: he just got a huge upgraded pass catcher so i
- 49:15Speaker 1: i the path to him being bad is stuff like
- 49:19Speaker 1: well teams that lose in the super bowl or like
- 49:22Speaker 1: offseason distraction which is totally like those are real things
- 49:26Speaker 1: that absolutely do impact things but they're not they're not
- 49:30Speaker 1: on the field football reasons like i just he has
- 49:32Speaker 1: way more offensive talent around him this year so i
- 49:35Speaker 1: would expect him to be better.
- 49:37Speaker 2: Um Speaking also on the clock, and as I thought
- 49:40Speaker 2: about it, I keep thinking of more guys that aren't
- 49:42Speaker 2: necessarily on the clock, but whatever. I am personally very
- 49:48Speaker 2: interested in Cincinnati because I think, again, another guy that
- 49:52Speaker 2: everybody treats as though the franchise is letting him down,
- 49:55Speaker 2: but I will never forget this. We've talked about it
- 49:58Speaker 2: on this show. I don't know why it hasn't been
- 50:00Speaker 2: discussed in more places. But during the Super Bowl, Jamar Chase,
- 50:06Speaker 2: and I can't remember which, it may have been T. Higgins,
- 50:08Speaker 2: I don't think so, but Jamar Chase and another bangle,
- 50:11Speaker 2: I think they were talking to Shannon Sharp doing a
- 50:13Speaker 2: podcast on Radio Row. And it was Chase making it
- 50:18Speaker 2: very clear that Joe Burrow bore a measure of responsibility.
- 50:22Speaker 2: for the injuries that he has suffered and that he
- 50:24Speaker 2: needs to take care of himself. I am shocked that
- 50:27Speaker 2: that never turned into a big giant story. I don't
- 50:31Speaker 2: even know if anybody ever like aggregated it or turn
- 50:33Speaker 2: it into any story. I know. I mean, I saw it.
- 50:36Speaker 2: It was like, and we talked about it on this show.
- 50:38Speaker 2: So I did my part spread where it got there.
- 50:40Speaker 2: But I say all that. I mentioned that just because
- 50:44Speaker 2: they made the move for Dexter Lawrence to make their
- 50:46Speaker 2: defense better. They have given Joe Burrow all the guys
- 50:50Speaker 2: on offense that he has ever wanted. And look, they
- 50:55Speaker 2: made that Super Bowl in his second year. That was
- 50:59Speaker 2: five years ago. Like, that doesn't really matter anymore. What
- 51:06Speaker 2: you got, big dog?
- 51:07Speaker 1: Yeah, listen, he said... And by the way.
- 51:09Speaker 2: I love him. I think he's great.
- 51:12Speaker 1: He is great.
- 51:13Speaker 2: But it's on you now.
- 51:15Speaker 1: Well, so it's a fascinating one. He also said after
- 51:19Speaker 1: the Dexter Lawrence trade that this is now the best
- 51:20Speaker 1: roster that he's ever had. Like, yeah. And that's a
- 51:24Speaker 1: guy that went to a Super Bowl. And, you know,
- 51:26Speaker 1: they've like to your point, they paid T. Higgins and
- 51:29Speaker 1: Jamar Chase. Everyone knew they were going to pay Burrow
- 51:31Speaker 1: and Chase, but they paid all three. So like that
- 51:33Speaker 1: kind of bucked some of the stereotype of them being cheap,
- 51:37Speaker 1: where the stereotype of them being cheap is just the
- 51:39Speaker 1: fact of them being cheap is they have never paid
- 51:42Speaker 1: a coach to go away. Yeah. since the current ownership
- 51:45Speaker 1: has taken over, they have never paid a head coach.
- 51:48Speaker 2: And by the way, the current ownership is the only
- 51:49Speaker 2: ownership they've ever had.
- 51:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 51:51Speaker 2: Right.
- 51:52Speaker 1: There you go.
- 51:53Speaker 2: But didn't Mike Brown take over and like, yeah, from
- 51:56Speaker 2: his dad, I guess.
- 51:57Speaker 1: Yeah. Fair enough. Yeah. But like, since, cause I think
- 52:01Speaker 1: that the paying a coach to go away, I think
- 52:03Speaker 1: does go back to Mike Brown. I think there was
- 52:04Speaker 1: a coach in like the seventies or whatever, but regardless,
- 52:06Speaker 1: not the point, they don't pay coaches to go away.
- 52:09Speaker 1: So like, if this doesn't work, Zach Taylor clearly gets like,
- 52:14Speaker 1: accountability before Joe Burrow does but the thing that we
- 52:18Speaker 1: definitely talked plenty about as us national talking heads and
- 52:21Speaker 1: I definitely think is relevant is tick tick tick on
- 52:25Speaker 1: Joe Burrow getting fed up with Cincinnati like he can
- 52:28Speaker 1: say the right things and they can pay his friends
- 52:30Speaker 1: and he'll probably ride it out for another head coach
- 52:32Speaker 1: and for Jamar Chase and T Higgins is prime but
- 52:34Speaker 1: quarterbacks prime is longer than wide receivers prime like I
- 52:38Speaker 1: will be gobsmacked if Joe Burrow is a career bangle.
- 52:42Speaker 2: So it is an interesting question because Carson Palmer famously
- 52:48Speaker 2: put a for sale sign in his yard and quit them.
- 52:51Speaker 1: Yep.
- 52:53Speaker 2: And got away with it.
- 52:54Speaker 1: Amazing.
- 52:55Speaker 2: And the only reason he could get away with it
- 52:57Speaker 2: is because they were the Cincinnati Bengals.
- 52:59Speaker 1: Yep.
- 53:00Speaker 2: I don't think that people look at the Bengals now
- 53:04Speaker 2: the way that they did. I guess that's now almost
- 53:06Speaker 2: 20 years ago. But the way that they did at
- 53:09Speaker 2: that time, Burrow can get fed up with them. but
- 53:13Speaker 2: I do think the question is fair to ask, like,
- 53:16Speaker 2: what part are you, what part are you fed up
- 53:19Speaker 2: with exactly? Cause they seem to have done all the things.
- 53:23Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, again, other than like, I do think
- 53:25Speaker 1: that most teams would have fired Zach Taylor by now.
- 53:29Speaker 2: Yeah. You know what? That's, that becomes an interesting story again,
- 53:32Speaker 2: because I would have fired Zach Taylor before they ever
- 53:34Speaker 2: got to the Superbowl. And then he, and then he
- 53:38Speaker 2: got to the Superbowl. What I think, I don't think
- 53:42Speaker 2: you're wrong about it, that somebody else probably would have
- 53:46Speaker 2: let him go. But I feel like he's put up
- 53:48Speaker 2: that just good enough to keep things going situation. Right,
- 53:52Speaker 2: but that's... Oh, yeah. Okay, 9-8, 9-8, 6-11. Yeah, yeah,
- 53:56Speaker 2: you're normally fired by that.
- 53:57Speaker 1: You're normally fired, man. I mean, you're... I mean, like,
- 54:00Speaker 1: the easy example is, like, he's obviously fired in Philadelphia,
- 54:03Speaker 1: you know?
- 54:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:04Speaker 1: Like, you know, so, yeah. So, I think... I think
- 54:07Speaker 1: that that one is, like, a pretty easy dot to
- 54:10Speaker 1: connect with. Like, they... If he didn't have an extra
- 54:13Speaker 1: year on his deal, he would have been fired before
- 54:15Speaker 1: this year. So that's a thing that I think you
- 54:18Speaker 1: can point to. But no, they have now spent money.
- 54:24Speaker 1: And I don't think Dexter Lawrence fixes everything for them defensively, obviously.
- 54:28Speaker 1: But they have massive amounts of pressure on them. Burrow
- 54:34Speaker 1: has massive amounts of pressure on him. And even if he, like,
- 54:37Speaker 1: reputationally took a bit of a ding, though, for, like,
- 54:39Speaker 1: turning on Cincinnati one to five years in the future,
- 54:43Speaker 1: to your point, he's so awesome that half the damn
- 54:48Speaker 1: league would be lining up to acquire Joe Burrow.
- 54:51Speaker 2: By the way, we got, like, more guys that we
- 54:53Speaker 2: could have gotten to on the clock. I will get
- 54:56Speaker 2: one more, and I'm going to try to, you know,
- 54:58Speaker 2: you got out, so hopefully this won't go on too long.
- 55:02Speaker 1: Let me text, and I'll get myself an extra couple minutes.
- 55:04Speaker 2: We're good. Super Bowl champion Jalen Hurts.
- 55:08Speaker 1: Oh.
- 55:10Speaker 2: He's so on the clock.
- 55:12Speaker 1: Dude, they leaked that story to ESPN that had the
- 55:15Speaker 1: anecdote about how he doesn't have any more guaranteed money
- 55:17Speaker 1: after this year. Like, what, next? Like, that one's in
- 55:22Speaker 1: writing how much he's on the clock. He's so on
- 55:24Speaker 1: the clock.
- 55:24Speaker 2: My goodness.
- 55:25Speaker 1: Yeah. It is a– that one is obvious. Like, he's
- 55:33Speaker 1: beloved in Philly until he isn't. a.j brown leaves if
- 55:38Speaker 1: the problems remain then a.j brown wasn't the problem the
- 55:42Speaker 1: the money factor and they are wildly talented like it's
- 55:49Speaker 1: a it is still one of the best two through
- 55:52Speaker 1: 53 rosters in the nfl even without a.j brown like
- 55:57Speaker 1: their defense is absolutely ridiculous their offensive line was injured
- 56:00Speaker 1: last year but like if a casual NFL fan knows
- 56:04Speaker 1: four names on your offensive line, your offensive line is awesome. Like,
- 56:08Speaker 1: and their offensive line has it and they still have
- 56:10Speaker 1: Saquon and they still have Devante. Like, yeah, man, that
- 56:14Speaker 1: team is, we talked about Houston Superbowl ready without the quarterback.
- 56:20Speaker 1: It's tougher to say with Philly, given that we've talked
- 56:23Speaker 1: about this before. I can't, he's, I'm pretty confident I
- 56:30Speaker 1: know what Jalen Hurts is, except for he's been amazing
- 56:33Speaker 1: in two Super Bowls.
- 56:34Speaker 2: He's outplayed Patrick Mahomes in two Super Bowls. I see
- 56:37Speaker 2: it with my own eyes.
- 56:38Speaker 1: Yeah, so we've done this conversation now probably three times
- 56:42Speaker 1: in a couple of years, and I always get to
- 56:44Speaker 1: that point where it's like, well, I got to give
- 56:45Speaker 1: him that. But yeah, man, he's definitely on the clock.
- 56:49Speaker 2: They're going to be in everything. Of course, they got
- 56:51Speaker 2: a coach that nobody trusts. Never seen a team that good,
- 56:54Speaker 2: and nobody believes in the coach or the quarterback.
- 56:57Speaker 1: They have another new play caller an offensive coordinator they
- 57:00Speaker 1: do Jalen Hurts has had a new offensive coordinator every
- 57:04Speaker 1: year that he has played big time football it's the
- 57:07Speaker 1: craziest stat I have my guy Troy update the graphic
- 57:10Speaker 1: every year for me on first things first every year
- 57:13Speaker 1: in college every year in the pros he has the
- 57:16Speaker 1: same number of play callers as he does years playing
- 57:20Speaker 1: college or NFL football.
- 57:21Speaker 2: If you win with him you'll get promoted yes or
- 57:25Speaker 2: he'll get you fired Yes.
- 57:27Speaker 1: No. Yes, it is. It is the best way to
- 57:29Speaker 1: synthesize it. But like if so, if if Sean Mannion
- 57:34Speaker 1: doesn't do a good job, doesn't do like the Shane
- 57:37Speaker 1: Steichen like level job with it, it's like, well, at
- 57:41Speaker 1: some point, does Nick Sirianni get fired? You're the offensive
- 57:44Speaker 1: coach who doesn't call the plays and you keep hiring
- 57:46Speaker 1: coordinators who doesn't get the most out of your quarterback.
- 57:48Speaker 1: You gave two hundred fifty million dollars to. Yeah.
- 57:51Speaker 2: And the shame of this show, we didn't get to
- 57:53Speaker 2: talk about the one guy that's not another guy that's
- 57:55Speaker 2: actually not on the clock. Justin Herbert.
- 57:58Speaker 1: Yeah, we ran out of time, Bo. Yeah. Mike McDaniel's
- 58:02Speaker 1: going to save him.
- 58:03Speaker 2: That's the thing. We actually got a whole year. It
- 58:05Speaker 2: is possible that we're out here talking about this is
- 58:07Speaker 2: the year finally that Justin Herbert put it all together.
- 58:10Speaker 1: Oh, if. He's going to meet Caleb in the Super Bowl.
- 58:15Speaker 2: Danny Parkins, check him out. First things first, 5 o'clock Eastern, FS1.
- 58:21Speaker 2: My brother, I appreciate you.
- 58:22Speaker 1: Appreciate you, Bo. Thanks, man.
