- 3:28And you see the stage from here, this would be fine. I'll
- 3:30be upstairs then. Yeah, like missus didn't I His name is Crime,
- 3:37isn't it. That's right? You know? When he came out the house
- 3:38tonight to pick me up, and it's so nice. I can't think of
- 3:42him as a police officer somehow. Oh dear, that wasn't the propertiest thing
- 3:46to say was don't worry about it. We've had two other cases like yours
- 3:52this week, missus Cramer, at least something like yours. The other two
- 3:54women just had the phone call, though, well, they were lucky.
- 3:58I wish that's all I had. The only one who's actually seen him.
- 4:00I'll know him again if I see him too, I'll tell you that much
- 4:03right now. Oh all right, that's the officer I had before, isn't
- 4:09it. Yes, that's sergeant Carter. Oh yes, I have your attention.
- 4:13Please, People out there on the other side of the wire in the
- 4:15audience room, may I have your attention? Please? Thank you. My
- 4:19name is Carger, Sergeant Pete Carger. I'll explain the line up to you.
- 4:24Each of the suspects you will see will be numbered. I'll call off
- 4:26the number, their name and charge. You have any questions or identifications,
- 4:29please remember the number of side of the prisoner as I call his name the
- 4:32end of each line. When I ask for questions or identifications. Call out
- 4:35the number if you're sure. You're not too sure. The suspects have e
- 4:39mailed the questions I asked. These suspects are able to get a natural tonal
- 4:42voice, so then I pay too much attention to the answers, as they
- 4:45often lie. All right, bring on the line. I'm on. Boys
- 4:49over at the end of the stage, spread out and stamp facing the screen.
- 4:56Answer your sides. Look straight ahead, long way to the back of
- 4:59the room. There we want everybody to here, So talk right up when
- 5:01you answer the question. Okay, number one, Salvator amtio robbery. I'll
- 5:06tell you Salvator five and a half and stand right up there in the circle.
- 5:13Ad a boy, what's your address? Twenty sixty three Franklin? I
- 5:16what is that? An apartment house? Hotel? What I bought in a
- 5:20room there? It's a boarding house. I get this city of your home,
- 5:24Salvator. I didn't get that. Well, you come from someplace else?
- 5:29Or is this your hometown? No, no, no, no,
- 5:31I'm from Philly. My wife lives there. What are you doing here?
- 5:35Oh? Just looking around for work? Sure? Sure, I work?
- 5:42What do you do, Salvator? We're in a house? Man I trim
- 5:45free sometimes good money this time of the year. Were there any weapons?
- 5:48Yeah, we've gone, and what kind of gun? Tell me about it?
- 5:54Do you hear me? That's a luger. I don't know what caliber
- 5:58is. Sure you've gone. Do you have a car? No? I
- 6:02okay, okay, number two? Maxwell sterns that auto. I didn't still
- 6:08know Hudson. Have me hear his mistake. When we find out that's true,
- 6:11will be the first to admitted. Max tell us the last place you
- 6:14slept before you're arrested forty four twenty five Lafiet Street. Louder Max, people
- 6:17can't hear you forty four twenty five? Laugh he has all right, all
- 6:20right, how long you lived at that address? What do you mean?
- 6:24How long have I lived there? How long have you lived there? That's
- 6:27what I mean. I don't see what difference it makes us answer with Max?
- 6:30Two hours? Where'd you live before that? Norman, Oklahoma? How
- 6:35long in town before you're arrested? Two hours and a half. I didn't
- 6:40even get a chance to impact my suit case. Well, we unpacked it
- 6:43for you, Max. Pretty interesting stuff there, Yeah, but I ain't
- 6:46done that though. Okay, Max, that's enough. Side on that.
- 6:47Yeah, I don't know what you found my suit, plater Max. I
- 6:49don't want anybody to get the wrong idea about me. Okay, now,
- 6:54don't get sold. Be kind number two, will you? I mean number
- 6:57three William Barnes open charts and the startle with him might hurts my eyes.
- 7:03Then close him and give us your address, twelve fifty six West Coal.
- 7:10Thanks having at the last place. That's why that's the one we want.
- 7:15William. Yeah. We see the Jews in thirty eight grace apart to test
- 7:19a minute mix. Yes, yes, I stand against the wall there and
- 7:23keep your mouth shut. I don't want to be talking up in that stage.
- 7:25Wow. Just telling Tony he's got his own troubles. Just do as
- 7:28I tell him. Yeah, okay, what about a car, William Jadlin,
- 7:32Yeah, make models color in year. I'm a convertible Red one nineteen
- 7:40forty seven. I think you think, don't you know? When he swiped
- 7:44it yesterday? Where do you work Aunt Saint Joseph's what's that cemetery? I
- 7:50dig graves. That's your profession, William. Yeah, I've been doing it,
- 7:55oh long time. We're arrested with anybody, William Yeah, Lewis Barnes.
- 8:03Yeah, any relation to you? Sure, my kid, I'm just
- 8:24looking for you. Then this is famous spot anybody no luck? At least
- 8:28came up from the stats office, and I have some other things. EMO
- 8:30is about the same and all of them. Guy calls up, won't give
- 8:33his name, asks the girl to meet him. He uses a lot of
- 8:35bio language, threatens descriptions. Aren't too close. It's pretty dark. She
- 8:39couldn't be wrong. You find out mister Desmond's maiden name a Rachel Balager.
- 8:43I checked it with Ruth Forbes. I never heard of each other. Neither
- 8:46one of them knows Kramer. Missus Desmond worked out of the Paranis agency on
- 8:50sixteenth Street, and Ruth Forbes handled by an aupore called the fair View.
- 8:54He Shearlan's models. You know who doesn't. Yeah, and this bird's having
- 8:58a lot of fun and we aren't even close to him. Better cover all
- 9:01the agencies that handle these girls and tell him what's up? Right? Oh
- 9:03well, I'll take this. Oh I'll have missus Cramer look at the Moneyhow
- 9:09she's still here in my office? When Pete comes up showing up? Yeah,
- 9:16I don't How long is it going to be lieutenant. Oh ten minutes,
- 9:24yeahs fye. I hope you don't mind me using your cane. No,
- 9:30not at all. Hi, Hi, Pete, I remember missus Kramer.
- 9:37Oh sure do? How are oh sergy? Oh yeah, remember where
- 9:41I saw that picture? Oh, calendar year before last. I've seen you
- 9:46before the other day. Still working it then, I mean posing for calendars.
- 9:52I'm still a photographer's model. When I get a call. I played
- 9:56those voice recordings back from missus Kramer. Pete. She didn't recognize any of
- 9:58them. I wish I could be more help. I know i'd recognize his
- 10:03voice again, the same as I recognize his face. Oh what an awful
- 10:07person. Just off. Oh, we're glad he didn't do any worse than
- 10:09he did. Oh, I guess I screamed so much and made so much
- 10:11noise. He was pretty be caught right there. I've been modeling off and
- 10:15on ever since I was sixteen. He Lord knows, I've had my share
- 10:18of wolf calls and cranks and smart boys. But when I got that phone
- 10:22call, I thought it was just an other one, although the language he
- 10:24used was pretty wrang. But tell me, miss Kramer, have you thought
- 10:28of any possible way he could have gotten your phone number. I just don't
- 10:33know. I really don't. The agency wouldn't give it out. They're very
- 10:37strict about things like that. They have to be me an't you. I
- 10:41can still hear him saying you're a pretty good looking girl, aren't you.
- 10:43That seems to be his opening remark every time said the same thing to the
- 10:48other two. And did he have that awful music playing in the background,
- 10:50Yeah, right down the line. Try to make a date with him.
- 10:54When they refused, he told him they'd be sorry, But he didn't make
- 10:58a threat good with either one of them. Why do you suppose he went
- 11:01after you, missus Braymer. I guess I was pretty rude to him on
- 11:03the phone, not that he didn't deserve it after the kind of language he
- 11:07used. It's the only explanation I can think of. He just walked up
- 11:11to you when you were getting into your car and the parking lot. You
- 11:15hadn't seen him in the store that day at all. I never saw him
- 11:18before in my life. I'm sure when he talked I knew he was the
- 11:22same man who'd called me on the phone the night before and asked me to
- 11:24go out with him. What do you say? He said, you think
- 11:28you're pretty smart, don't you? And then he said I'll teach you,
- 11:31and he started hitting me around. You try to hit him back? Oh,
- 11:35I tried to get out of his way. I'm pretty tall, but
- 11:37he's quite a bit taller. He's over six feet you now, may I
- 11:41borrow a cigarette? I'm off? Oh sure, Oh, thanks, Oh,
- 11:50thank you. H Oh. It's possible, but a little out of
- 11:54line in a case like this to think that you've never met or seen him
- 11:58before anyone. I'm almost positive. I can't say for sure because I meet
- 12:03so many people all the time, but his face was entirely unfamiliar to me.
- 12:07In his voice too, of course, tall, dark, thin,
- 12:09about one sixty. Oh, I'm very nicely dressed, kind of conservative.
- 12:16You've been married how long, missus Kramer? About four years this July.
- 12:22And what does mister Kramer do well? Dog travels for consolidated engineers. He's
- 12:26an engineer. Oh, he's an attorney. I have to ask a personal
- 12:30question here, missus Kramer. Understand it's strictly to get an idea about this
- 12:33thing, and i'd appreciate an answer. Since you've been married, have you
- 12:37gone out with men other than your husband, I mean in a business way
- 12:41or something like that. Why do you ask me a question like that.
- 12:46We're just trying to pin down the reason this man called you and I asked
- 12:48you to go out, and was apparently so incensed when you refused him that
- 12:52he attacked you in the parking lot. Are there an ask tree? Others
- 12:56are married, aren't they? Missus Desmond's been horse for three years with Forbes.
- 13:01A single works as an airline hostess. Now I understand we don't want
- 13:05to pry any of person. That was when I go up with someone else.
- 13:07He knows it's sometimes necessary when a buyer comes into town. I see,
- 13:13well, thank you for answering. Uh, have you ever seen this
- 13:16man? No? How about this one? No? No, I don't
- 13:22think so. I want to take your time. Well, I just don't
- 13:28know if he had a hand. No, I but you aren't sure?
- 13:35Well no, I guess I'm known. Okay, how about this man?
- 13:41No? Definitely, Okay, Pete, let's pick up this one and see
- 13:48what he has to say. H Oh, what is it? Quime downstairs?
- 13:52Oh? Well that's about all, missus Kramer. We may want to
- 13:56talk to you again in case we come up with something. Oh well,
- 14:00I had my phone number changed. It's four two three nine now the same
- 14:03exchange. Yes, taber uh huh, tabor four or two. Okay,
- 14:09if you don't mind, we're going to put a man with you and your
- 14:11family for the next few days to keep an eye on things till we get
- 14:13this cleared up. Oh well, we hardly think you'll come back and try
- 14:16to get at you again, but if we don't want to take any chances
- 14:20either, and we don't want you to be frightened by any policeman you see
- 14:24loitering a bar. I see, well, goodbye, then I sure hope
- 14:28you get him, so do we. Thanks for all your trouble, mister
- 14:31Climmer. Hi Ben the money pee anything new now, routine bench worn out
- 14:54for this costas and failing the register got him. Man Asher picked him up
- 14:58this morning. Gosh doesn't claims he's been out of town. Just get back
- 15:01last night and check it out. So far it stands, let's hold him
- 15:05today. You want a sandwich? Yeah? Oh, what did Freeda have
- 15:09to say? Afreid's on vacation. I talked to doctor Rourke. He says.
- 15:13The guy's following a pretty clear pattern here. He only picks on models
- 15:16or girls have had their picture in the paper, been seen in public.
- 15:22Hey, that one we had two years ago to practically the same thing.
- 15:26He had a yen for telephone operators. Yeah, Missus Desmond, Missus Kramer,
- 15:30and Ruth Forbes reported the cause. Missus Kramer didn't report hers until after
- 15:33she'd been beaten up. The language he uses when he talks to them,
- 15:39you know, some woman just wouldn't be bothered reporting it at all. They
- 15:43might tell her boyfriends or husbands, but that's about it, you know,
- 15:46telling how many he's called? H He's so there's a different operation. How's
- 15:52that been? Rourke thinks this bird's building up to something, might kill the
- 15:58next girl if he has a chance. Charlie's oh yeah, just coming here,
- 16:07Lietenant, Yeah, okay, yea three climb, better hold it up,
- 16:15Just get another complaint, no names, Adelaide. How the receptionist at
- 16:18Universal Television station, she played it smart, it looks hot now? Was
- 16:22that she made a date to meet him tonight. Friends, wherever you are,

- 17:18Helpful, refreshing, delicious. Now back to the lineup. Are you Adeliite
- 17:45Harvey? Yes, I am police Miss Harvey. My name is Guthrie.
- 17:48This is Sergeant Cogan. I how you do there? You did? He
- 17:52well, not so much when I was talking to him on the phone,
- 17:56But now after I've had a chance to think it over. Gosh, the
- 18:00officers who came up and told me what he did to that other woman did
- 18:03he hear the bed, Oh, she'd be all right. We'd just like
- 18:07to get a few things straight, Miss Hobby. Sure, terrible, terrible
- 18:10things he said to me. I told the officers everything I could remember.
- 18:12Yeah, we have the report, Miss Hobby, and I just want to
- 18:15follow up on it a little. Uh. We'd like to get this burden,
- 18:18and anything you can say tell us about him is going to help us.
- 18:22A little shaky, I guess it might seem funny to you. I
- 18:23don't know at all. I mean, I know he can't hurt me talking
- 18:26on the phone, but I don't know. Well, tell me, do
- 18:30you think he'd be able to recognize his voice again if you heard it?
- 18:33Oh? I think I would. I don't know sor the god. You
- 18:36know. When the call came in, at first, I thought it was
- 18:40one of the boys downstairs kidding me or something. You know, he talked
- 18:42nice at first. When I asked him who it was, he wouldn't say,
- 18:47just sort of brushed me off and said he'd see me around and he'd
- 18:51like to take me out. And I said I'd have to know who he
- 18:53was. We coughed. You know, did he mention any names of people
- 18:56that you might know. Oh no, I knew it was in England.
- 19:00I mean one of the boys downstairs or something. When he started to insist
- 19:02on seeing me tonight, that's when I remembered reading about the other phone calls
- 19:06and the paper. So I told him i'd seen him. It almost made
- 19:11me sick the things he was saying and all. Yeah, that was music
- 19:15in the background. Yeah, weird things. What kind of a mass?
- 19:18I could hear him plainly? Not all the time. Music was sort of
- 19:22echoing, scratchy. Then I got the idea he might be holding a handkerchief
- 19:26up over the mouthpiece. Does that sound possible? Oh? Sure? And
- 19:30the call came in about four excuse me please? Sure? Taking for a
- 19:33reception? Yes, this is Adele. Well just a moment on too,
- 19:40Jenny. Right, A call came in about four. Yes, i'd just
- 19:44come back riding a croke. Where do you get your cokes? Here's a
- 19:47machine at the end of the hall. Anybody around the machine when you were
- 19:49there? I don't remember, I don't think so. The lobby of the
- 19:55Elsworth that's where he said he'd meet you. Yes, seven o'clock. I
- 19:57told him i'd be there. You did the right thing. Maybe we can
- 20:02get our hands on him. Yeah, I hope. So there ought to
- 20:04be a law against a man calling up like that, there is Did you
- 20:08have a model, Miss Harvey? No photographic works something like that. No.
- 20:12Wait, I'm not a professional, but the station used my picture for
- 20:17publicity last week, miss TV on the billboard up room. Yeah, that's
- 20:21me to give me a Miss Harvey, Miss Sergeant Kwine. Sergeant Quine will
- 20:41be sitting in that chair next to the pond. Yeah, and I'll be
- 20:44in the chair right and back. I don't know anybody who comes up to
- 20:47you. We'll pick up. I suppose I have to go through with it
- 20:51now, all right, clin you can go ahead and you you think you'll
- 20:55show up? We hope he will. You can go out and sit down,
- 20:59now, can I? Oh? All right? Here goes nothing.
- 21:03You over a couple of minutes, Hi, as it look. Two couples
- 21:11at the bar, another couple of one of the booths man sitting at the
- 21:15end of the bar doesn't answer the description. How about the diningroom is filled?
- 21:18Crocketts at the entrance with Murphy. Okay, keep your eyes open.
- 21:22Hey, what let me have paper? Huh? Oh? Sure? Alice
- 21:32M. After seven, I guess I better get over there. Yeah,
- 21:57got three. Yeah, here's a man looking at me. He's been glancing
- 22:03at me ever since I sat down here. He's standing over by the desk.
- 22:07Now, tar one in the gray suit. Oh yeah, you see
- 22:11him? Yeah? Doesn't he look suspicious to you? He sure does.
- 22:15That's Sergeant Asher. Alright, bye? What do you think? Then?
- 22:37Eight thirty, that's like we struck out. Yeah, he'd be here,
- 22:41but I know he's going to be here in sink. Maybe he got Scan's
- 22:45kinds usually do, don't They may say? Okay, miss Harvey, I
- 22:51guess he didn't want to see me so bad at that. Huh Yeah,
- 22:53all through for the night. M h sageant Quine will take you home.
- 22:57Fine, I'll send someone out later. Okay you ready, miss, I'm
- 23:02tired? Yeah, Ben, we hold it peate signaling I've been black.
- 23:10Be exceeding that forty one circle of black three times? Man driving plenty of
- 23:14parking space out front? Yeah, guy, looks possible. There anybody who
- 23:17owns a car like that? Have you exceed in it? Forty one?
- 23:21I don't know. Come on, should be coming around now. Let's take
- 23:25a chance outside. Yeah, well, at the corner bend. Just caught
- 23:36the light forty one nine seven eight. Yeah, all right, miss Hobby.
- 23:38You see the car, Yeah, I'll take a good look when it
- 23:41comes by. I'm scared, but nothing to be scared of here he comes.
- 23:51You see his face? Yes, well, anything familiar about the car?
- 23:55About his face, I'm trying to think, give is something up?
- 24:00I'm not sure he was wearing overas and he was driving a trap, but
- 24:03he could have been hire. You've seen that theme before. Yes, I
- 24:07think it's the same man who came out to fix my television set. I'll
- 24:26be with you in just a minute. Okay, Sorry to keep you waiting.
- 24:33I got a job there. Ask you out for close tonight. I'm
- 24:36pretty busy, you are you? Yeah? Yeah, I'm woring handle.
- 24:38What can I do for you? Gentlemen? Your name Victor Knight? Yeah,
- 24:41sure, we're police officers. Victor. Like to ask you a couple
- 24:44of questions. Well, sure, what's up, officer? If you service
- 24:48a television set for a girl named Adelaide Harvey the thirteenth, the last month
- 24:52Harvey, I don't know. I'd have to look in the book so I
- 24:57might have. Well, why what's up? The name Forbes mean anything to
- 25:02you, Ruth Forbes Forbes? No, No, I don't think so.
- 25:06Now about Rachel Kramer, No lives out on South York Street. No,
- 25:11no, I don't get it. We don't get these people say your service
- 25:15that television sets at one time or another? Is that true? What could
- 25:19be? I don't know. Why is it anything wrong with that? I
- 25:23got a license to be in business. You know if you drive a forty
- 25:26one Buick City that, don't you for sure it's parked out in back?
- 25:32Hey, look, I don't understand. You must have something wrong coming in

- 26:44do I want to meet some other girl? That's so we're trying to find

- 27:37lot last Monday night. I took a couple of her ribs. You sound
- 27:41like you could be that. Now I'm not. I tell you you got
- 27:45this all wrong. If Missus Creamer says you aren't the man, you'll be
- 27:48back here in half an hour. You should leave me. When she finds

- 29:38Please you people out there on the other side of the wire in the audience
- 29:42room, may I have your attention? Please? Thank you. My name
- 29:45is Coger, Sergeant Pete Coger. I'll explained the lineup to you. Each
- 29:49of the suspects you will see will be numbering. The lineup, starring Bill
- 30:03Johnstone as Lieutenant Ben Guthrie with Jack Moyles a Sergeant Pete Krger, was written
- 30:07by E Jack Newman with music by Eddie Dunsteader. Featured in tonight's cast were
- 30:11high ever Back, Joyce Manners, Jay Novello, Howard mcneer, Joe Devall,
- 30:15Virginia greg and Stacy Harris. The lineup was transcribed in Hollywood by him
- 30:19Delvaier. This is the CBS Radio Network Welcome back, uh this episode.
- 30:55So dell was kind of a rare topic during the Golden Age of entertainment.
- 30:59The only time I can remember this being dealt with was on television. The
- 31:04series of Decoy, which of course starred Beverly Garland as a policewoman, didn't
- 31:14have an episode on this topic, but that show tended to focus on some
- 31:19police situations that were considered, I guess, to be more of interest to
- 31:23women. I think they did a good job on this. The big thing
- 31:26that they really suggested this episode is that it's not these sort of calls are
- 31:33not something to be just ignored, and that really the fact that there were
- 31:42women who just I think, for understandable reasons, really just wanted to move
- 31:48on from this whole unpleasant mess and so didn't get reported to the police,
- 31:56and that presented some challenges to the police. Establishing patterns as to who to
- 32:07help them figure out who might have done this thing. And I think that
- 32:14that was brought home in this episode and that this can definitely head in towards
- 32:22more serious crimes, which is why it's important to report it and to investigate
- 32:28it. In this case, even though they hadn't had a ton of cooperation,
- 32:31they were able to They were able to solve the case because of guy
- 32:39actually going to physically be near the victims. If both the assault and then
- 32:47the date that he ended up not going on, Otherwise the whole case may
- 32:52have gone on quite a bit longer, with calls going to seemingly random people.
- 33:00And I was kind of an ond turn because at first it seemed like
- 33:04the targets were based on having modeled or appeared on a billboard, and in
- 33:10this case, it turns out that the basis seems to have been that he
- 33:16fixed their television sense a bit of a switch. But the guy definitely definitely
- 33:28seemed to disturbed, you know, you could just tell from the final scene
- 33:31where he's already like, you know, blaming his wife for walking out on
- 33:40him in advance, not seem to understand why she might want to do that,
- 33:49but at any rate, a good educational program. All right. Well,
- 33:52we turned to listener comments in feedback and got one from Joel regarding episode
- 33:59ten eight, the check Killer Case doul RIOTSI adam, you comment about the
- 34:05detective was doing small talk in front of the widow in this episode of the
- 34:07lineup. To my ear, they moved away from her and were speaking a
- 34:10bit softly, so she didn't hear them perhaps a bit of perhaps subtlety.
- 34:16But listen again and see what you think. I did listen, and I
- 34:21do kind of see where you're coming from, Joel, because it did seem
- 34:25like they had some sound effects indicating that they were walking away a little bit
- 34:37from her. And then of course you hear the crying, and I guess
- 34:43probably what I was hearing that seems was the detachment, because it's hard to
- 34:51me to imagine being able to carry on, you know, just a everyday
- 34:54casual conversation with a grieving wi wailing a few feet Alie. But it's probably
- 35:04a lot more possible for police officer who deals with these sort of circumstances on
- 35:08more of an everyday thing. All right. Joshua comments on sends me a
- 35:15message through Facebook Adam, the show is great and getting better as you go.
- 35:19Now, as you read a comment the other day that must have had
- 35:21the number symbol because you said number and whatever follow the symbol, just an
- 35:24NYI. Number is a hashtag used to mark something as a topic you can
- 35:28follow on Twitter and now on facebook's a number, So hashtag great detectors as
- 35:34awesome would be read as hashtag great detectors is awesome. Well, thanks so
- 35:37much, Josh. Even though I am younger and a lot younger than most
- 35:42of the audience, I didn't grow up with Twitter, so apparently I'm going
- 35:49I've been seeing it as a number sign, but I definitely even on Twitter
- 35:52when I use it, I'm thinking number sign when I tip the hashtag sign,
- 35:57So I will. I will try to make amends in that way.
- 36:02Thanks so much for the clarification, Josh. Okay. Well, Also,
- 36:07before we go, I want to let you know about our movie tomorrow.
- 36:12The movie is going to be the ninth guest. It's a nineteen thirty four
- 36:17mystery film and it bears some resemblance to Ten Little Indians, which was made
- 36:25into the movie and then there were none, though I believe this one actually
- 36:30predated it, and it's a decent, decent for being movie in nineteen thirty
- 36:37four. Probably not for younger kids. That are a few kind of scary
- 36:42parts in it, but other than that it should should be an interesting viewing.
- 36:47So tomorrow on video theater be sure and watch for the ninth guest,
- 36:54and we will be back on Monday with yours truly, Johnny Dollardy will be
- 37:00time from the lineup. In the meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen
