- 0:00You are listening to Look Who's Talking.
- 0:17I am Cameron Minter.
- 0:18I am your co-host and the wonderful, marvelous Jessica Coffey is our host.
- 0:27What's going on, Jessica?
- 0:28Cameron, how are you doing?
- 0:30Nothing much, just living life and living life.
- 0:33Oh, okay.
- 0:34Yeah, yeah.
- 0:35I'm doing me.
- 0:36I'm doing me.
- 0:37Do you, Boo.
- 0:38I know that's right.
- 0:39I know that's right.
- 0:40What's been going on with you?
- 0:41Listen, not much.
- 0:42What happened?
- 0:43I've been in the office stuck writing grants, so I haven't seen daylight.
- 0:46Oh my Lord, that is the worst.
- 0:49And you know, I got to get out the office today to come here and the sun is shining.
- 0:54Make a day of it.
- 0:55Make a day of it.
- 0:56You know, I'm trying to.
- 0:57What else has been up?
- 0:58Girl, I just came back.
- 1:01I was out yesterday.
- 1:02I had some death in the family, but you know, it's a shame that we come together as family
- 1:09for death.
- 1:10Yeah.
- 1:11Just to remember how good family is.
- 1:14You know what I'm saying?
- 1:15And so that was what I was experiencing and just, you know, getting this.
- 1:21I've got a very large family that I don't know.
- 1:23Oh really?
- 1:24That I don't know.
- 1:25Oh wow.
- 1:26I have a little girl who is my cousin.
- 1:29Oh.
- 1:30And I didn't even know it.
- 1:31Wow.
- 1:32So yeah, yeah.
- 1:33What y'all eat?
- 1:34I got to do better.
- 1:35We just went to Cheddar's.
- 1:38Oh, okay.
- 1:39Yeah, it was good.
- 1:40You know, because when you get together with family, you always have to eat.
- 1:43Oh yeah, you got to eat.
- 1:44You got to eat.
- 1:45And usually on the menu is fried chicken, macaroni, green beans.
- 1:48Come on.
- 1:49You said green beans.
- 1:50Well, yeah.
- 1:51Well.
- 1:52If you're special, if you're real special, you get green.
- 1:55Yeah.
- 1:56But everybody get the.
- 1:57But see, I know someone always has this person in the family and this person is my mama.
- 2:03So.
- 2:04You're going to talk about your parents again.
- 2:06I'm going to tell them to listen to the show.
- 2:08I'm sure going to do it.
- 2:10You might need to.
- 2:11Because when she cooked, like, you know, we go to the same churches, you know, our family
- 2:16members and she'll be like, don't tell your auntie I cooked some greens.
- 2:22Don't tell her I cooked some chitlins.
- 2:25Because I don't want to share.
- 2:27Right, right, right.
- 2:28So what do I do when we leave church?
- 2:30Aunt Jyvah, you know my mama cooked some chitlins.
- 2:34Oh my Lord.
- 2:35Oh, I'm coming over.
- 2:37My mama would be so mad at me.
- 2:39I know, right?
- 2:40How you not going to want to show your greens?
- 2:42Right, right.
- 2:43So they must be really good.
- 2:44It took me forever to pick them and clean them and cook them.
- 2:50Nobody helped her.
- 2:51They were stirring them.
- 2:52That's right.
- 2:53Nobody helped her.
- 2:54They knew what she was doing.
- 2:55Yeah.
- 2:56And they came over and ate some too.
- 2:57You're wrong.
- 2:58I know.
- 2:59You're wrong.
- 3:00That's why they just tolerate you on the first of 15.
- 3:03And that's why her discipline of choice, I got a lot of that.
- 3:09Every day I didn't miss a day.
- 3:11I know that's right.
- 3:12You know?
- 3:13I know that's right.
- 3:14What else has been happening?
- 3:15What's happening in, what have you been looking at on the news, TV?
- 3:20What's up?
- 3:21You know, I've been really busy here lately, so I haven't been up.
- 3:26But I have started watching this show called All Rise.
- 3:31And, you know, I finished Station 19.
- 3:35Oh, okay.
- 3:36I was going to say, have you not been up on The Drake and Kendrick Lamar?
- 3:40Oh, God, yeah.
- 3:41I don't want to.
- 3:42No.
- 3:43But you know what?
- 3:44I'm showing my age.
- 3:45I'm an old man.
- 3:46So I'm not really understanding the rap, you know what I'm saying?
- 3:52And to try to follow, you know, I would love to follow a beef, but I'm not really understanding
- 4:00what you're talking about.
- 4:02So you're just saying words to me.
- 4:03But yeah, it's crazy, isn't it?
- 4:05Yeah.
- 4:06And, you know, I think it's all really a publicity ploy because...
- 4:10I think so, too.
- 4:11You know what I'm saying?
- 4:12Yeah.
- 4:13You know, you're very timely and, you know, you make albums every three years, but all
- 4:18of a sudden you're making them daily.
- 4:19Come on.
- 4:20You're making records daily.
- 4:21Yeah.
- 4:22Well, I wish we had a...
- 4:24Who's winning now in your opinion?
- 4:26Oh, Kendrick.
- 4:27Yeah, that's what I thought.
- 4:28I mean, he's a lyricist.
- 4:30Has Drake dropped another?
- 4:32It's been 24 hours.
- 4:33You know, I don't know.
- 4:34I don't know.
- 4:35Oh, you're not really keeping up with it.
- 4:37So I was keeping up with it, and then it's just lasted so long that I'm like, oh, well,
- 4:45I don't have to hear anything to know.
- 4:48You have a lyricist, and then you have almost like...
- 4:51For me, Drake is more like a pop rapper.
- 4:54Right.
- 4:55You know, he's...
- 4:56Everyone loves him.
- 4:57He's famous and all of that.
- 4:58But the lyrics, you can't touch Kendrick Lamar.
- 5:01They're not there.
- 5:02They're not there.
- 5:03They're not.
- 5:04So maybe we'll have a battle between literacy and science.
- 5:07Stop it.
- 5:08Literacy and math.
- 5:09Like...
- 5:10Pop, pop.
- 5:11Pop, pop.
- 5:12Who knows?
- 5:13MC equals...
- 5:14Right, right, right.
- 5:15You know?
- 5:16Okay, okay, okay, okay.
- 5:19So I think it's time for a coffee break.
- 5:25So for today's coffee break, what I want to share with you is consistency is more important
- 5:41than perfection.
- 5:43You know, a lot of times we go for being perfect, and that's not necessarily the key to getting
- 5:50to the next level.
- 5:51How about you be consistent?
- 5:53I think about that, Kim, when it comes to losing weight.
- 5:58Most people want to lose weight in a week, but it's all about the consistency.
- 6:01If you continue to be consistent in your eating or your exercising or whatever the case may
- 6:06be, maybe you want to learn how to read better.
- 6:09Well, the key to that is being consistent in reading, period.
- 6:14You know?
- 6:15So...
- 6:16That's awesome because that consistency is the thing that teaches.
- 6:20You know, I remember when the kids were young and my wife would go, I'm taking out all the
- 6:29toys and I'm doing all this stuff and then the next day they'd be back, right?
- 6:32Right.
- 6:33And I said, but if you say that, you got to follow through.
- 6:35Yeah, and even...
- 6:36And be consistent with it.
- 6:37And even the quote of practice makes perfect.
- 6:40Practice doesn't necessarily make perfect, but it can make you better because practice
- 6:45is meaning you're being consistent.
- 6:47That's right.
- 6:48And that is a goal that, in my opinion, is reserved for God.
- 6:53So we can always strive to be better, but perfect is off the table.
- 6:59Well, and when I do performance evaluations...
- 7:01You looking for perfect.
- 7:02And people be like, I'm very good.
- 7:05Well, are you saying there's no room for improvement?
- 7:08Right.
- 7:09Right.
- 7:10We can improve on here.
- 7:12All right.
- 7:13Who's on the show?
- 7:14What are we talking about today?
- 7:16Well, Karen...
- 7:17I think our show today, there's a long title, but we're going to give a short title.
- 7:23How to Get the Most out of Your Head Start Program.
- 7:26Come on.
- 7:27Come on.
- 7:28Come on now.
- 7:29Sounds like a winner right there.
- 7:30How to Get the Most out of Your Head Start Program.
- 7:32All right.
- 7:33Who we got here?
- 7:34And we are sitting today with one of our site directors, the site director of the Prep Academy
- 7:38at South Lexington, and her name is Tracy Norwood.
- 7:42Hey, Tracy.
- 7:43Welcome to the show, Tracy.
- 7:45Thank you.
- 7:46So, and you know, I know this is what radio or not radio, but internet, TV world.
- 7:54I don't know.
- 7:55Yeah.
- 7:56The very location that our studio is in is the same location that Tracy is the site director
- 8:03for.
- 8:04Absolutely.
- 8:05So Tracy, tell us a little bit about you and your role in Head Start.
- 8:10So with my position, I've been here since 2017.
- 8:13I've been the site director ever since I got here, and I love it.
- 8:17Each day is different.
- 8:19There's different people I'm going to see, different challenges, and different ways that
- 8:23I can help the families.
- 8:25So I'm here basically managing the HOPE program at South Lexington, and like I said, it's
- 8:31just a joy.
- 8:32So you said no day is the same.
- 8:35No.
- 8:36But take us on one of your days.
- 8:40What does your day look like, starting when you walk in the door?
- 8:43Well my day actually starts before I walk in the door.
- 8:45It starts usually about 5 a.m.
- 8:47I'm doing day-to-day operations and the schedule for the day, making sure all of my staff knows
- 8:51where they need to be.
- 8:53I thought you was going to say it starts at 5 a.m. when people call in.
- 8:56That too sometimes.
- 8:57Whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 8:58What?
- 8:59You know, sometimes I'm like, nope, I'm going to put my phone to the side.
- 9:04But yeah, it starts in just making sure that we're ready for when the parents come in with
- 9:11their kids.
- 9:12You know, I'm trying to make sure all of my staffing are where they need to be.
- 9:16Everybody has their meals, their supplies for the classrooms, we're ready for the day.
- 9:20Lesson plans and items are in place, and that's just at the start.
- 9:23And then we're greeting parents in the morning, making sure all the kids are in the right
- 9:26place and safe and everything, and we're going through the day.
- 9:30You never know what might come up, what fires we might have to put out, but yeah.
- 9:35So tell our viewers, you know, you are a parent of two boys who are...
- 9:39Three.
- 9:40Three boys, but two of them are under the age of six.
- 9:45So what would you tell parents to look for in a Head Start location or a child development
- 9:53center?
- 9:54So the first thing I would look for is safety.
- 9:56You know, I always tell my staff and also the parents that you are entrusting your most
- 10:01prized possession to us every day.
- 10:04So we want to make sure that your kids are safe.
- 10:05So you want an environment that's going to be safe.
- 10:08That's the building, the classroom, the people that are keeping your kids safe.
- 10:12Also, definitely a curriculum that is going to allow your child to develop and reach their
- 10:18next developmental milestones.
- 10:19And that's one thing that I really love about our program.
- 10:22We're very focused on meeting each child where they individually stand and helping them to
- 10:26reach their next goal.
- 10:28Do you have parents say, curriculum?
- 10:30I thought y'all was just watching my kids.
- 10:32Yeah.
- 10:33I don't like that daycare word because you know, we're not daycare.
- 10:35We're not.
- 10:36And I'm quick to be like, nope, school.
- 10:38We're school readiness.
- 10:39Yes.
- 10:40So what would you tell a parent, we understand, okay, three to five, they get curriculum,
- 10:45yes, but what about zero to three?
- 10:48I always explain our program as a building blocks.
- 10:51Everything is building blocks to ensure not only your child, but your whole family is
- 10:55ready for kindergarten success.
- 10:57So there are developmental milestones from as early as when they are born that we're
- 11:00trying to help them meet.
- 11:02And like I said, it's individualized.
- 11:04So one child may not be where the other child stands.
- 11:07We're setting goals specifically for each child.
- 11:10And we also, we want the parents to let us know, what are you working on at home?
- 11:14Because we're a partnership and we want to make sure that we're all working together
- 11:17for that child.
- 11:18Now you've been here since 2017.
- 11:21So you've seen a lot, right?
- 11:23So you used to be in another location.
- 11:26Now you are the site director of the largest child development center that we have.
- 11:32Is that correct?
- 11:33Yes.
- 11:34Okay.
- 11:35So tell me about that transition.
- 11:36So the transition was a fun one.
- 11:38We went from across the street.
- 11:43It wasn't really bad.
- 11:45Basically, you know, we have a great team.
- 11:47You know, there's always a lot of people behind the scene that are always like helping us
- 11:51to get things ready and moved and, you know, make sure licensing and everything is in place.
- 11:57So it was a pretty smooth transition for us, honestly.
- 12:01We've had parents that went from across the street to across over here with us.
- 12:04So honestly, it's been pretty smooth, pretty great.
- 12:07Yeah.
- 12:08So what about your staffing?
- 12:10Did you see an increase in staff?
- 12:14Yes.
- 12:15And children, right?
- 12:16Yes, absolutely.
- 12:17So right now I have a staff of over 30 plus people.
- 12:20We also have a lot of specialists in the building as well.
- 12:22So there's a lot of people that I'm responsible for every day.
- 12:26So we want to make sure that not only the kids are safe, but, you know, I'm covering
- 12:31my staff too.
- 12:32I want to make sure that this is a place that they enjoy coming.
- 12:34I never want this to be a burden for anybody.
- 12:36I want them to enjoy what they do working with the kids and the families.
- 12:41And like I said, I want to be here to support my staff.
- 12:44Absolutely.
- 12:45That's powerful.
- 12:46So yeah, I just that was a big change.
- 12:50And for those who don't know, we the building that she's in used to be National Academy.
- 12:56And there was a lot of changes, a lot of staff, a lot of kids.
- 13:01And I was just like, oh, my goodness, because I was here first.
- 13:05Let me say that the studio was here first.
- 13:07We were down here by ourselves.
- 13:09Oh, it was, wasn't it?
- 13:10Yeah.
- 13:11We was down here by ourselves.
- 13:12Stacey said, I hope you enjoy that because the kids are coming.
- 13:15They are.
- 13:16Yes.
- 13:17I forgot about that.
- 13:19Yeah.
- 13:20Yeah.
- 13:21It's been a minute.
- 13:22Yeah.
- 13:23And I think we did the transition right in the middle of COVID too.
- 13:27Yes.
- 13:28So you've seen Head Start before COVID, during COVID and after.
- 13:37What are some of the changes that you have noticed, whether about the children, whether
- 13:41about the families, staff?
- 13:44One thing I would definitely say about the kids, you know, they say that phrase COVID
- 13:48children because those children that were born during that time, they were at home.
- 13:53They were at home with their parents and then they come here and they really haven't had
- 13:56a whole lot of socialization opportunities.
- 13:58So when they get here and I always tell parents, sometimes it may be harder on you than it
- 14:02is for your child, especially on that first day.
- 14:04The second day, it's reality.
- 14:06But, you know, really I've seen the, like, that's the biggest challenge because they
- 14:12have been with their moms, they've been with their dads at home or their siblings, but
- 14:16not around other kids that are their age.
- 14:18So when they come in, it's a struggle, I will say for them.
- 14:22But you know, our staff is really amazing at making sure that they are comfortable,
- 14:26that they know that this is a safe spot for them.
- 14:29And I also tell parents, you know what, call as much as you want, because like I said,
- 14:33you're entrusting your child to us.
- 14:34I want you to feel comfortable as well.
- 14:37So if I was a new parent or a parent that this was my first time wanting their child
- 14:43to be in a child development center and I come to you, what does that process look like?
- 14:49Will I get to see the building?
- 14:50Like, take me through the process.
- 14:51Yes, of course.
- 14:53So you can always schedule a tour with us.
- 14:56So the tour, you're going to be able to see the classrooms.
- 14:58In our center, we have a lot of windows that you can look into the classroom.
- 15:02So we don't want to interrupt instruction time, but you're always going to be able to
- 15:05see the classrooms to see the environment that your child is going to be in.
- 15:09So immediately, we can usually schedule either same day or schedule an appointment for you
- 15:15with our pathway specialist.
- 15:17They're going to walk you through that process for enrollment.
- 15:19You're going to fill out applications, you're going to turn in health documentation.
- 15:23And then, you know, we have a couple things we have to do.
- 15:26And then you're going to get to meet with me.
- 15:27And we're going to do orientation.
- 15:29And I'm going to be able to answer some of those hot burning questions you may have.
- 15:33Yeah.
- 15:34Just about our program, the education parts, about our teachers.
- 15:40Because like I said, some of these parents have never had their kids anywhere.
- 15:44So I'm there to answer any questions that you may have to make you feel comfortable
- 15:48about leaving your children with us.
- 15:49We're going to go, we're going to take a quick break and we're going to get some tips from
- 15:54Tracy on what you should expect and how you can get the best out of our Head Start program.
- 16:01You're listening to Look Who's Talking.

- 18:22And you are listening to Look Who's Talking and we are here with Tracy Norwood who is
- 18:38the site director at one of our Head Start locations, the Prep Academy at South Lexington.
- 18:44Hi Tracy.
- 18:45Hi.
- 18:46So before the break, you know, you were just talking about, you know, if a new parent was
- 18:52coming in and, you know, taking a tour and what they would get and you mentioned they
- 18:58would do an orientation with you.
- 19:00I want to talk a little bit about that.
- 19:02You know, that's a time for the parents to be able to ask questions.
- 19:07But what is your expectation of the parents who, you know, enroll their children into
- 19:14this, your program?
- 19:15So one of the first things I always tell parents is our program is school readiness.
- 19:19So like I said, we're not only preparing your child, we're preparing your whole family.
- 19:23So I start talking to them about our drop off times and cut offs because when you go
- 19:28to Fayette County, you can't just drop off anytime.
- 19:31So we do have cut off times and we do set that expectation because like I said, we want
- 19:36to prepare you and your child.
- 19:39Also we talk about family engagement events.
- 19:41So we host family engagement events every month and we want our parents to be involved.
- 19:45We want them to come out to our events and, you know, really engage with us.
- 19:50So we ask that our parents at least come to one activity per month.
- 19:54We had one today, Muffins with Mom.
- 19:56We got, you know, Princess Storytime coming up.
- 19:59So we have things for them to be involved.
- 20:01And we also we love volunteers in the classroom.
- 20:04So that's one thing we give them opportunities that they can come in our program and help
- 20:09as well.
- 20:10Got you.
- 20:11What are some of the other?
- 20:13I know that you have different family engagement events and you've had some that incorporated
- 20:21fathers as well.
- 20:22Can you talk a little bit about those?
- 20:24Yes.
- 20:25So we have a monthly fatherhood group.
- 20:27It's called Chop It Up.
- 20:29So basically it is a space just for fathers or father figures to really come and just
- 20:34they have breakfast, they meet and they have a topic of the month.
- 20:38And we have a guest facilitator that comes in to facilitate conversations.
- 20:42But in talking to my husband, I really learned that men don't have a space.
- 20:46You know, they are society looks at them and, you know, they're supposed to protect and
- 20:51provide and they have a lot on their shoulders.
- 20:53But when do they ever really have an opportunity to just sit down with like minded individuals
- 20:58and just talk and just really learn from one another, grow, really talk about the challenges
- 21:03that they're facing and in order to to learn how to improve and grow.
- 21:09So that's a space that we have here for our fathers.
- 21:11And that's one of the things that I absolutely love because our own Cameron is a part of
- 21:17that.
- 21:18So the great thing that I've been seeing these last couple of months is, you know, the men
- 21:25that work in our program, they want to be involved with the children and they want to
- 21:31be involved with the development.
- 21:33And when I say with the children, that might not mean one on one with the children, but
- 21:37that might mean with their fathers, which directly affects the child.
- 21:44So I love that that's under other duties as a side.
- 21:47Exactly.
- 21:48And I love it, too.
- 21:50Tracy asked if I would be like the host facilitator here.
- 21:55And I was kind of reluctant at first, but it's something that I look forward to every
- 22:01month because like like she said, there's not that space and we are building that space.
- 22:07You know, making men feel comfortable in talking.
- 22:10I mean, we've got a lot to say, but we got to make sure the environment is OK for us
- 22:15to do that.
- 22:17And our head start director let me go on a fatherhood conference.
- 22:21Isn't she so nice?
- 22:23She is.
- 22:24Isn't she?
- 22:25And I met some wonderful other men that are doing the same things that we're trying to
- 22:28implement here.
- 22:29And it's just been powerful.
- 22:31But yeah, that kudos.
- 22:33That's one of those that that's a wonderful program that we're doing here.
- 22:38So I think it's great.
- 22:40I do, too.
- 22:41So I don't know.
- 22:43We're just doing so many different things.
- 22:45What do you think, though?
- 22:47Now I do remember once we talked about attendance and how attendance is more important for our
- 22:57little ones.
- 22:58Why?
- 22:59What is going on with attendance?
- 23:00What?
- 23:01Tell me about attendance.
- 23:02So if you're not here, you're not able to get those socializations.
- 23:06You're not able to work with your peers.
- 23:08You're not able to work on your goals as well.
- 23:11So and like I said, we're preparing you for kindergarten.
- 23:14At kindergarten, they expect you to be present every day.
- 23:17You don't want to be Truman.
- 23:19So we are instilling those values now.
- 23:22We want to see you here every single day.
- 23:23And that's what I lead with during orientation.
- 23:26So we want to see you here every day, 100 percent of the time.
- 23:29But Tracy, they just kids.
- 23:31They just don't know nothing.
- 23:32They just just come around playing.
- 23:35And they are playing.
- 23:36But you know what?
- 23:37With our program, it's great because they're learning through play.
- 23:39That's right.
- 23:41Learning and having conversations.
- 23:43If you go in one of our classrooms, I promise you I have the most magical, imaginative conversations
- 23:52with the kids.
- 23:54And that's ways for them to learn and learn new vocabulary.
- 24:00And it's all about imagination, too.
- 24:03It's kind of like they lead their learning.
- 24:06It reminds me of Montessori in a way, because it's not strict to the point where sit down.
- 24:13This is what we're learning today.
- 24:14And it goes.
- 24:15Chapter three.
- 24:16Right, right.
- 24:17It's not like that.
- 24:18It's more like you do learn through play.
- 24:22And our teachers don't just let them play and sit back and watch.
- 24:27It's no, they're interacting with them.
- 24:30So you might see teachers in the, I don't know, housekeeping.
- 24:36And the child is the mom.
- 24:38And the child is able to tell the teacher, this is what I want you to do.
- 24:44I love the transformation because the things that the kids are being taught, the parents
- 24:51aren't really expecting.
- 24:53And then when they come home, and one of our guests said, what's photosynthesis?
- 24:59You know what I'm saying?
- 25:00These type of things that they're actually learning.
- 25:03How to pour milk in a cup.
- 25:06These are things that they are learning to be not self-sufficient, but trying to help
- 25:13them gain some skills.
- 25:15You know what I'm saying?
- 25:16And also to develop their independence.
- 25:18So you know me.
- 25:21I've been like this since I was small.
- 25:23It's because I was able, my parents allowed me to really go through my imagination.
- 25:32Really I think it's because my sister wouldn't play with me.
- 25:34But that's another topic for another day.
- 25:36But just allowing children the creativity, even if say we've talked about them pouring
- 25:44their milk.
- 25:45A spill is a learning opportunity.
- 25:47It is.
- 25:48You know?
- 25:49It is.
- 25:50Just, you know, we're getting to the end of the show and I know you want to change the
- 25:56placement of your hit start highlight word of the day.
- 26:01So the highlight word of the day is?
- 26:06Preparation.
- 26:07Preparation.
- 26:08You heard it here first.
- 26:12Preparation is the hit start highlight word of the day.
- 26:14Yes.
- 26:15You know what to do with it.
- 26:16Let's get back to Tracy.
- 26:17So Tracy, let's talk about preparation.
- 26:22How can a parent prepare themselves, their child, for this next journey of preschool,
- 26:30child development?
- 26:31You know, if they're thinking about, man, I really want to get my child in a program.
- 26:38What is the preparation process that they might need to think about?
- 26:42They really need to start collecting those health documents.
- 26:44That's going to be key because we have to have, you know, everything to be able to enroll
- 26:48them.
- 26:49I would also start having those conversations because you never want to just take your child
- 26:53somewhere and just drop them off.
- 26:55So I think conversations is key.
- 26:57That communication, letting them know that, hey, you know, we're going to start going
- 27:01to school soon.
- 27:02And those tours are really important because those kids are able to see the place that
- 27:06they're going to be coming every day.
- 27:09So I think that's really important.
- 27:11So if someone was like, why do I need to bring all these health documents?
- 27:19I mean, because I feel like those are questions that we get.
- 27:23Absolutely.
- 27:24Like, why?
- 27:25Right.
- 27:26Well, some things are required for us for licensing, such as immunization records.
- 27:29That's a licensing requirement for us.
- 27:32Things like their health, their physical, that's super important because sometimes it
- 27:37lists information like allergies and things like that.
- 27:40We need to know that because, like I said, we want to make sure that the kids are safe
- 27:43and we have to know what foods that we're providing them with.
- 27:47And it also lists things if they need like speech or anything like that.
- 27:55That's probably listed on there as well.
- 27:56That's related to their development.
- 27:58Yes.
- 27:59And I think that's important to highlight that, you know, your child isn't just coming
- 28:04into a Head Start program and not, you know, we do assess those things so that if there's
- 28:11any early intervention that needs to happen, then we make sure that we set the parent up
- 28:19with those interventions.
- 28:20One of the things that I love is that, and I don't know the process, so I'm shifting
- 28:25it over here.
- 28:26I think I answered this about identifying learning disabilities or, you know, I don't
- 28:34want to use the incorrect word.
- 28:35That is something that we do.
- 28:37Yes.
- 28:38How do we do that and why?
- 28:41So within 45 days of the child being in the program, we're going to complete a few different
- 28:46screenings.
- 28:47So we do the ages and stages screening and we also do the brigands screening.
- 28:51We look at those to see if the child passes or not.
- 28:54If they do not, we're going to re-screen them.
- 28:57If they do not pass again, we're going to do some type of referral, whether that be
- 29:01to Fayette County or First Steps.
- 29:03And we're going to be here to walk through the parent with them the whole way to help
- 29:08them to answer any questions that they may have and to help their child get the early
- 29:12intervention that they really need.
- 29:15That's awesome.
- 29:16And I know it's got to be difficult because we all believe that our child is, and we all
- 29:22know, let me say it right.
- 29:24We all know that our child is wonderful and we do not necessarily want to hear that there's
- 29:30something that they need.
- 29:33You know what I'm saying?
- 29:35And I really appreciate the program actually doing that, trying to help identify things
- 29:42that are going to hinder their learning in the future and just be able to find it zero
- 29:51to five is amazing.
- 29:54I'm amazed at people who go through their whole life that are dyslexic and never knew
- 29:58it, never been diagnosed.
- 30:01And even, let's talk about social-emotional.
- 30:07Whether you say mental health or whether you say social-emotional, finding ways to be able
- 30:13to cope in situations where you might find yourself angry or say if you have a child
- 30:20who's the only child at home.
- 30:22Like you?
- 30:23I actually have had a sister.
- 30:25Go!
- 30:26However, I just act like one.
- 30:34Just trying to find those ways.
- 30:36We even have what we call conscious discipline for parents.
- 30:41Finding ways because you might have two kids, but one way of disciplining is not the way
- 30:49for both of them.
- 30:50So we even take that time with our families and with our parents to just, one, get to
- 30:56know your children, get to know the differences in them, get to know how do they affect you?
- 31:03How do they affect how you interact with them?
- 31:05That's really, really important because we want to make sure we are cultivating an environment
- 31:12where the child feels safe, the parent feels safe, and they feel like they are a part of
- 31:17their child's development.
- 31:20So we've been talking about this wonderful program and I just wonder, is it open?
- 31:25I mean, what's going on with the program now?
- 31:28We are always, always accepting applications.
- 31:33Alright.
- 31:34Always.
- 31:35You can apply for the Head Start program and find out why your child...
- 31:41Apply today, hurry up.
- 31:43Why your child needs a Head Start.
- 31:45Your child needs a Head Start.
- 31:47Tracy!
- 31:48Thank you for being on the show.
- 31:50Thanks for having me.
- 31:51You've done a great job.
- 31:52Is there any parting words you'd like to say?
- 31:55We're accepting applications.
- 31:56Oh, my center is the best.
- 31:57Uh oh.
- 31:58Uh oh.
- 31:59Y'all heard it here.
- 32:00Say it again.
- 32:01Say it again.
- 32:02Let me cut it out.
- 32:03Say it again.
- 32:04Oh, my center is the best.
- 32:05Oh, shots fired.
- 32:06I knew I had some good...
- 32:07Boo boo boo boo.
