- 0:00Speaker 1: Namusa's knees hit the red earth before she knew she
- 0:02Speaker 1: was falling. The stone circle around her was dark, the
- 0:06Speaker 1: clay pot shattered at her feet, and the space where
- 0:09Speaker 1: her body had been was now filled with a cold,
- 0:12Speaker 1: humming absence. She looked down at her hands. They were
- 0:16Speaker 1: not her hands. They were translucent, flickering like heat over
- 0:20Speaker 1: a tar road. And through them she could see the
- 0:23Speaker 1: grass and the stones and Lesidi's face, frozen in a
- 0:27Speaker 1: scream that made no sound. Nomusa! Lesidi's voice finally broke through,
- 0:33Speaker 1: raw and cracking. She scrambled across the circle, her fingers
- 0:36Speaker 1: passing straight through Nomusa's arm. No! No, no, no! Bring
- 0:41Speaker 1: her back! You said you could bring her back! Madame
- 0:45Speaker 1: Masashaba stood at the edge of the stones, her blood-red
- 0:48Speaker 1: dress stark against the twilight. Her milky eyes were fixed,
- 0:52Speaker 1: not on Nomusa, but on the sky. I said I
- 0:57Speaker 1: could not, she said quietly. She is the door now.
- 1:01Speaker 1: The hunger will not pass. Then what is that? Lacede
- 1:05Speaker 1: pointed upward, her hand shaking. Namusa turned her gaze from
- 1:08Speaker 1: her own impossible hands to the wound in the sky.
- 1:12Speaker 1: The seam of light had widened into a gash, and
- 1:15Speaker 1: through it she could see a red desert, vast and cold,
- 1:19Speaker 1: beneath the sky the colour of rust. A figure stood
- 1:22Speaker 1: in that desert, small and distant, wearing a suit of
- 1:25Speaker 1: white and silver. The figure raised a hand and, Nomusa
- 1:29Speaker 1: felt a pull, a hook in her chest, as if
- 1:32Speaker 1: something inside her was being called home. That, Madame Masachaba said,
- 1:38Speaker 1: is a door we did not open, and it is
- 1:39Speaker 1: calling her. Calling who? Lesedi demanded. Nomusa is gone. She's
- 1:46Speaker 1: a threshold now. What could possibly call a threshold? Madame
- 1:50Speaker 1: Masachaba finally looked at Nomusa, and her ancient face twisted
- 1:54Speaker 1: with something Nomusa had never seen there before. Recognition. Not her.
- 2:00Speaker 1: The thing she became. The door is a door, child.
- 2:04Speaker 1: And doors, she said, can be opened from both sides.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Namusa felt the pull again, stronger this time, and the
- 2:12Speaker 1: stone circle began to fade. The hills of Molechi dissolved
- 2:16Speaker 1: into red dust. The stars above her were wrong, too bright,
- 2:21Speaker 1: too still, arranged in patterns she did not recognize. She
- 2:25Speaker 1: tried to speak, to warn Lucidie. but her voice came
- 2:28Speaker 1: out as a sound like wind through a hollow reed,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and then the desert was around her and the figure
- 2:34Speaker 1: in white and silver was walking toward her across the
- 2:38Speaker 1: rust-colored sand. You are the door, the figure said. Its
- 2:42Speaker 1: voice was not human. It was layered like many voices
- 2:46Speaker 1: speaking at once, some ancient and some impossibly young. But
- 2:51Speaker 1: you are also a key, and I have been waiting
- 2:54Speaker 1: a very long time for a key. Namusa tried to
- 2:58Speaker 1: step back, but her feet, if they were still feet,
- 3:01Speaker 1: would not move. Who are you? she managed, and this
- 3:04Speaker 1: time the words came out whole. The figure stopped a
- 3:08Speaker 1: few paces away. Up close it was not a suit
- 3:11Speaker 1: at all. It was a body made of woven light
- 3:14Speaker 1: and shadow. And beneath the surface, Namusa could see faces.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Hundreds of them, thousands, all of them African, all of
- 3:23Speaker 1: them forgotten. I am what your ancestors sealed away, the
- 3:28Speaker 1: figure said. I am the hunger's older brother. The one
- 3:31Speaker 1: they could not bind. So they buried me here, in
- 3:34Speaker 1: the red dust, and hoped the distance would hold. It
- 3:38Speaker 1: tilted its head. It did not. Nomusa's mind raced. The hunger.
- 3:44Speaker 1: The thing she had just become a door to contain.
- 3:48Speaker 1: If this was its brother, then she had not closed
- 3:50Speaker 1: a door at all. She had opened a window. You're
- 3:54Speaker 1: the one who called Lacede, she said, through the rift.
- 3:58Speaker 1: You've been pulling at her since the beginning. I have
- 4:01Speaker 1: been pulling at all of them, the figure said, the
- 4:04Speaker 1: ones with salt in their blood, the ones who remember,
- 4:08Speaker 1: the ones who carry names that should have been erased.
- 4:11Speaker 1: It raised a hand and Nomusa felt the hook in
- 4:14Speaker 1: her chest tighten. But you, you are the first to
- 4:18Speaker 1: come willingly. You stepped into the threshold. You became the door.
- 4:23Speaker 1: And now, Daughter of the stone, you will open for me.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Nomusa closed her eyes. She thought of her mother, singing
- 4:31Speaker 1: beneath a mountain pool. She thought of Thabo, somewhere in
- 4:35Speaker 1: a village called Mashashane, carrying Ampho's memory. She thought of Lesedi,
- 4:41Speaker 1: kneeling in the stone circle, her hands passing through empty air. No,
- 4:47Speaker 1: she said. The figure paused. No, I am the door,
- 4:51Speaker 1: Nomusa said. and her voice was steady now, steady as
- 4:55Speaker 1: the stone circle had been beneath her feet. And a
- 4:58Speaker 1: door does not open for everyone who knocks. She reached inward,
- 5:02Speaker 1: to the cold knot of the hunger she had bound,
- 5:05Speaker 1: to the memory of Nomalanga, the first guardian, to the
- 5:08Speaker 1: blue bead of her mother's voice. She gathered all of it,
- 5:12Speaker 1: every thread of memory and sacrifice and love, and she pushed.
- 5:17Speaker 1: The figure screamed. The red desert cracked. And somewhere... Three
- 5:22Speaker 1: hundred million kilometers away, an astronaut named Lesego Mokoena felt
- 5:27Speaker 1: the ground beneath her boots shudder and heard a voice.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Not the ancient voice from beneath the Martian dust, but
- 5:34Speaker 1: a new one, a woman's voice speaking in Isi Zulu.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Hold on, the voice said. I am coming. Lesego looked
- 5:42Speaker 1: up at the alien sky, at the unfamiliar stars, and
- 5:46Speaker 1: for the first time since her crew had died, she smiled.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I'm holding, she whispered. Back in the stone circle, Lesidi
- 5:54Speaker 1: felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned, and there
- 5:57Speaker 1: was Nomusa, solid, whole, breathing hard, her eyes wild and bright. How?
- 6:04Speaker 1: Lesidi started. No time, Nomusa said. She grabbed Lesidi's arm
- 6:08Speaker 1: and pulled her toward the edge of the circle. We
- 6:12Speaker 1: have to go, now. It knows where we are, and
- 6:14Speaker 1: it's not just on Mars anymore. It's been here all along.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Madame Masechaba did not move. The door, she said. You
- 6:22Speaker 1: closed it. Namusa looked back at the sky. The seam
- 6:26Speaker 1: of light was gone, but the star still looked wrong,
- 6:29Speaker 1: and she could feel the pull, faint but persistent like
- 6:33Speaker 1: a hook buried deep in her chest. No, she said.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I just told it to wait.
