Willie Akers, West Virginia basketball’s legendary icon and Hall of Famer, has passed away at 89 — a titan of the Mountaineers’ Golden Era who led them to 81 wins in 93 games, including a No. 1 ranking and national championship game run. A two-time Southern Conference champ and NCAA Tournament veteran, he averaged 7+ points and 6+ rebounds while co-captaining with Jerry West. Before WVU, he led Mullens High to a state title in ’55, then forged a coaching dynasty at Logan High with four state championships and a 402-116 record.
