Lucas: Oh, that's great. And today we're going somewhere you might need those directions for: the library. Luna: Ooh, I love libraries. So we're learning how to borrow books in Cantonese? Luna: Totally. Every little bit helps. Okay, back to books — what's the first phrase? Lucas: Let's start with 'I want to borrow a book'. In Cantonese: 我想借書. Luna: 我想借書. Lucas: Perfect. 我 means 'I', 想 means 'want to', 借 means 'borrow', and 書 means 'book'. So literally 'I want borrow book'. Luna: 我想借書. I can already see myself saying that at the counter. Lucas: Now, you'll need your library card. How do you say 'I have a library card'? 我有圖書證. Luna: 我有圖書證. 圖書證 is library card, right? Lucas: Right. 有 means 'have'. So 我有圖書證 — 'I have a library card'. Luna: 我有圖書證. Good. Then what? Lucas: Next, you might ask 'How long can I borrow it?' That's 可以借幾耐. Luna: 可以借幾耐? 可以 means 'can', 借 is 'borrow', 幾耐 is 'how long'? Lucas: Exactly. And the librarian might answer 'two weeks' — 兩星期. Luna: 兩星期. Two weeks. That's pretty standard. Lucas: Right. Now, if you're pointing to a specific book, you say 'this book' — 呢本書. Luna: 呢本書. 呢本 is 'this', 書 is 'book'. Lucas: And when you're done, you need to 'return the book' — 還書. Luna: 還書. That's a new verb for me. 還 means 'return'. Lucas: Yes. Let's put it together in a mini scene. Imagine you're at the library counter. Luna: Okay, I'll be me. '你好，我想借書.' Lucas: Librarian says '你有圖書證嗎？' And you say '我有圖書證.' Luna: '我有圖書證. 可以借幾耐?' Lucas: Librarian: '兩星期.' You pick a book: '呢本書.' Then later you return it: '我想還書.' Luna: Oh, that feels real. Let me try the whole thing again. '我想借書. 我有圖書證. 可以借幾耐? 兩星期? 呢本書. 還書.' Lucas: Flawless. You're ready for the library. Let's review all five phrases once more. Luna: Yes please. Lucas: First: 我想借書. Luna: 我想借書. Lucas: 我有圖書證. Luna: 我有圖書證. Lucas: 可以借幾耐. Luna: 可以借幾耐. Lucas: 兩星期. Luna: 兩星期.
