- 0:03Speaker 1: Good morning, Mafia. It's Thursday, October 29th. This is the
- 0:08Speaker 1: Morning Charge, your daily 10-minute or less Buffalo Bills news hit.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I'm Aaron Quinn, here with Colin Ritchie, bringing you everything
- 0:16Speaker 1: you need to know before you start your day. Let's
- 0:19Speaker 1: get right into it. Joe Brady met with the media
- 0:22Speaker 1: on Wednesday as the Bills returned to practice coming out
- 0:25Speaker 1: of the bye at 5-1. Here are the big takeaways.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Brady acknowledged how frustrating it's been for DJ Moore to
- 0:32Speaker 1: miss time, but noted sitting was the best move for
- 0:35Speaker 1: him long term. On Ed Oliver, Brady said the baseline
- 0:38Speaker 1: vision for the defense was built around him, stating bluntly, quote,
- 0:42Speaker 1: we are better with Ed Oliver playing. Asked about fixing
- 0:46Speaker 1: the defense, Brady made sure to loop the offense into
- 0:49Speaker 1: the conversation, saying both sides have plenty to clean up.
- 0:52Speaker 1: He credited Jim Leonard and the staff for their work
- 0:55Speaker 1: over the break, emphasizing that the key to bye weeks
- 0:57Speaker 1: is honest self-critique without over-correcting and losing your identity. On
- 1:02Speaker 1: concerns in the secondary, Brady warned against pointing fingers and
- 1:06Speaker 1: singling out any unit, noting when players feel isolated, they
- 1:10Speaker 1: start to press and try to make superhero plays instead
- 1:13Speaker 1: of just trusting the scheme. Brady talked about the return
- 1:16Speaker 1: of Trey White and compared Trey White coming back to
- 1:19Speaker 1: Shaq Thompson and being in the building. a respected veteran
- 1:22Speaker 1: voice who knows how to work his way back in
- 1:24Speaker 1: and can play if he's needed later in the season.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Brady didn't hold back on Sam Franklin's situation that unfolded
- 1:31Speaker 1: over the last week, calling the unverified process unfair to
- 1:34Speaker 1: the player and setting a bad precedent while expressing relief
- 1:38Speaker 1: that Franklin is going to be cleared to play. When
- 1:41Speaker 1: asked about the special teams and why they're not getting
- 1:43Speaker 1: enough credit early in the year, Brady started to gush
- 1:46Speaker 1: about Coach Rogers' unit, calling the special teams, quote, the
- 1:50Speaker 1: ethos of our football team. He revealed he plays special
- 1:53Speaker 1: teams highlights in the main team meetings all the time
- 1:55Speaker 1: to set the tone for how they fly around and
- 1:57Speaker 1: celebrate with each other, saying, you can judge a team
- 2:00Speaker 1: by how they play special teams. On the growth of
- 2:04Speaker 1: Keon Coleman and him responding to early criticisms, Brady said
- 2:08Speaker 1: that Keon is simply doing what's expected and holding himself
- 2:11Speaker 1: to the standard while being where he needs to be
- 2:14Speaker 1: on and off the field. He's built a ton of
- 2:17Speaker 1: trust with Josh Allen and that's showing week over week.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Quarterback Josh Allen met with the media also. He started
- 2:24Speaker 1: off by talking about enjoying his time off with his
- 2:26Speaker 1: baby and wife over the bye week and getting some
- 2:28Speaker 1: time at the beach. Then he got right back into football.
- 2:32Speaker 1: When asked about the Bills leading the league in points
- 2:34Speaker 1: per game while ranking near the bottom in total offensive plays,
- 2:38Speaker 1: Allen didn't sugarcoat it. He admitted that while the unit
- 2:40Speaker 1: has been extremely efficient, there's still a ton of room
- 2:43Speaker 1: for growth. Allen said, quote, There's so many things that
- 2:47Speaker 1: we aren't doing well on offense, too. ball security being
- 2:51Speaker 1: one of those big issues, Allen emphasized that knowing they
- 2:54Speaker 1: have plenty of room to improve is what makes the
- 2:56Speaker 1: 5-1 start so exciting. Addressing DJ Moore's potential return, Allen
- 3:01Speaker 1: expressed total confidence in picking right back up where they
- 3:04Speaker 1: left off. Despite Moore missing time over the last couple
- 3:07Speaker 1: of weeks, Allen said, quote, the trust I have in
- 3:10Speaker 1: him is immense, and that he isn't worried about picking
- 3:13Speaker 1: right back up when DJ returns. Allen shared his excitement
- 3:18Speaker 1: about seeing cornerback Tredavious White back in the building on
- 3:20Speaker 1: the practice squad, noting it brought back memories of last
- 3:23Speaker 1: year's surprise reunion in the locker room as well. He
- 3:27Speaker 1: also praised wide receiver Terrell Shavers as one of the
- 3:29Speaker 1: best teammates and hardest board games he's ever played with,
- 3:32Speaker 1: highlighting how hard Shavers fought back through injuries to get
- 3:35Speaker 1: back on the field where he is now. Looking ahead
- 3:38Speaker 1: to Sunday's clash against the Ravens, Allen was asked about
- 3:41Speaker 1: the hype around the Allen vs. Lamar matchups. Allen responded, quote,
- 3:46Speaker 1: I'm not playing Lamar. I'm playing the defense. You have
- 3:49Speaker 1: to be at the top of your game to beat
- 3:50Speaker 1: the team that has these types of quarterbacks. Quarterback Trey
- 3:56Speaker 1: White met with the media on Wednesday following his official
- 3:58Speaker 1: return to the team. Here are some key takeaways. White
- 4:02Speaker 1: made it clear that returning to Buffalo was an easy
- 4:04Speaker 1: decision for both he and his family, emphasizing the deep
- 4:07Speaker 1: bond with the franchise. Quote, I consider myself a Bill
- 4:11Speaker 1: through and through. While Trey's familiar with the franchise and organization,
- 4:15Speaker 1: he's not familiar with Jim Leonard's defense. White noted that
- 4:18Speaker 1: the challenge right now is simply learning the new terminology
- 4:21Speaker 1: and hand signals for Jim Leonard's defense. He spent the
- 4:24Speaker 1: first practice taking scout team reps and learning the signals
- 4:27Speaker 1: and being around the guys. He also noted that defense
- 4:30Speaker 1: is defense in terms of new looks, specifically more man coverage.
- 4:34Speaker 1: He said he feels like he can do it all. Press,
- 4:37Speaker 1: pattern match, play zone. He thinks he can do everything.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Having watched the first six weeks from afar, in classic
- 4:43Speaker 1: Trey White fashion, the Rams game while wearing his helmet,
- 4:46Speaker 1: White weighed in on the unit's early season growing pains.
- 4:49Speaker 1: He stressed the new defense takes time, patience, and heavy
- 4:52Speaker 1: communication through trial and error, and he's eager to help
- 4:55Speaker 1: accelerate this process and be there for the guys in
- 4:58Speaker 1: a positive voice in the locker room. Addressing his current
- 5:02Speaker 1: practice squad status, White expressed zero ego about this role,
- 5:06Speaker 1: noting that he's fully in line with the front office
- 5:08Speaker 1: and coaching staff on this. Whether it's running the scout
- 5:11Speaker 1: team cards, lending his nine years of experience, or serving
- 5:14Speaker 1: as a vocal sounding board for the younger defensive backs,
- 5:17Speaker 1: or stepping in when the team needs him, White's ready
- 5:19Speaker 1: to help.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Spencer Brown spoke to the media yesterday, providing some context
- 5:24Speaker 2: behind his back rehab. He said he's dealing with, quote,
- 5:28Speaker 2: lingering stuff from what's happened to me the last couple
- 5:31Speaker 2: of weeks. He said he got kind of nicked up
- 5:33Speaker 2: in the L.A. Rams game, and then he, quote, took
- 5:36Speaker 2: enough drugs to sedate a small elephant when he was
- 5:39Speaker 2: in L.A. preparing to play in Vegas the following week.
- 5:42Speaker 2: He emphasized taking the recovery easy and smart. Brown complimented
- 5:47Speaker 2: the special teams units for Buffalo, explaining how they help
- 5:50Speaker 2: set the energy for the rest of the team since
- 5:52Speaker 2: they're involved in the first play of the game. He
- 5:55Speaker 2: gave a shout out to special teams coordinator Jeff Rogers,
- 5:58Speaker 2: along with Ray Davis, Greg Dortch, Joe Andreessen, and Sam
- 6:02Speaker 2: Franklin for their contributions. Tyrell Shavers also spoke to the
- 6:06Speaker 2: media commenting on his rehab process, explaining that it felt
- 6:10Speaker 2: good to be out there with the guys having fun
- 6:12Speaker 2: again while he was knocking the rust off. He said
- 6:14Speaker 2: he got cleared by his doctor three or four weeks ago,
- 6:17Speaker 2: and with his practice window just opening up now, he
- 6:20Speaker 2: believes he's right on schedule for his eventual returns. He
- 6:23Speaker 2: said he expects to be fully healthy and get out
- 6:25Speaker 2: there and help the team win football games. The wide
- 6:28Speaker 2: receiver room is different than it was a year ago,
- 6:31Speaker 2: adding DJ Moore, Skyler Bell, and Greg Dortch. Shavers said
- 6:34Speaker 2: there's a different energy, but a good energy with the
- 6:37Speaker 2: receivers and that they have fun every day. He thinks
- 6:40Speaker 2: everyone's skill sets complement one another well on the field.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Injury update. Only one bill did not participate in Wednesday's practice,
- 6:50Speaker 2: and that was right tackle Spencer Brown dealing with a
- 6:53Speaker 2: back injury. More on that later. A laundry list of
- 6:57Speaker 2: players were limited, including DJ Moore, Dalton Kincaid, Ed Oliver,
- 7:02Speaker 2: Bradley Chubb, TJ Parker, TJ Sanders, Dee Alford, and Tyrell Shavers,
- 7:08Speaker 2: who officially did have his 21-day practice window opened. Rookie
- 7:13Speaker 2: guard Armaje Reed-Adams practiced in full with a back and
- 7:17Speaker 2: elbow injury. On Baltimore's side, they had a handful of DNPs,
- 7:22Speaker 2: including star safety Kyle Hamilton and safety Jalen Hawkins, all-pro
- 7:26Speaker 2: linebacker Roquan Smith, and starting guard Vanga Ioane. On Ioane,
- 7:32Speaker 2: Baltimore's first-round pick, Ian Rappaport reported that his MCL sprain
- 7:37Speaker 2: is considered a short-term injury, but he is expected to
- 7:40Speaker 2: miss a little time. Veteran offensive linemen Ronnie Stanley and
- 7:44Speaker 2: John Simpson were limited, along with nose tackle John Jenkins,
- 7:47Speaker 2: defensive tackle Broderick Washington, and cornerback TJ Tampa. Quarterback Lamar
- 7:52Speaker 2: Jackson was a full participant in yesterday's practice. Stat of
- 7:58Speaker 2: the day. The Bills have by far the largest RB1
- 8:03Speaker 2: to RB2 usage ratio in the NFL. James Cook has
- 8:08Speaker 2: tallied 117 rushing attempts already this season, compared to Ray
- 8:12Speaker 2: Davis' 5. This is a 23.4 to 1 ratio, which
- 8:18Speaker 2: is about 15 higher than any other comparison in the NFL,
- 8:22Speaker 2: with the next highest being Detroit and Cleveland's backfields at
- 8:25Speaker 2: around 8 to 1. The league median for context is 2.6
- 8:29Speaker 2: to 1. Missed the Cover 1 Buffalo podcast last night?
