- 0:00It's Duke and Yukon and Jim Moore with us on the Yukon Football Coaches Show.
- 0:04Quick thoughts on Duke. I'm looking at this quarterback six four two twelve,
- 0:09Riley Leonard. The dude was a basketball player in Mobile, Alabama.
- 0:13He likes football more. He's had a terrific start to his season, you
- 0:18know, throwing from one hundred and seventy seven a game. He's rushing a
- 0:21ball well sixty nine a game. So again, another dual threat QB to
- 0:25face. Yeah, I mean, he's honestly, he's a great player.
- 0:30His mechanics are beautiful. He can run, he throws a wonderful pass.
- 0:35He's on target, he knows where to go with the ball, has great,
- 0:39great ability to get out and make people miss in the open field.
- 0:43He takes care of the football. He just kind of does everything right.
- 0:47He's got a great offensive line that he's operating behind. I mean, it's
- 0:50one of the best offensive lines of football in my opinion, is referenced by
- 0:53the fact that they are where they are nationally in the rushing statistics and they
- 0:57don't give up sacks. He's got, you know, two running backs that
- 1:00he primarily relies on to carry the ball. They're one of the top teams
- 1:03in the country running the ball, and then they got receivers. They will
- 1:07go catch the ball, get yards after the catch, and they're all willing
- 1:10blockers. So offensively, it's a really good football team. And then on
- 1:14defense, you know, they're giving up nine points a game in three game
- 1:17through three games, so it's a hell of a challenge. You know,
- 1:22they deserve to be ranked in the top twenty, and you know, like
- 1:25you said, there at eighteenth, Well, that doesn't surprise me, and
- 1:26it wouldn't surprise me if they were ranked higher. They're a really, really,
- 1:29really good football team. And this quarterback is pretty darned special. Yeah,
- 1:33it's interesting. Mike Elkoll their head coach, second year there. He's
- 1:36a defensive guy, defensive coordinator in a number of places including Notre Dame and
- 1:41Wake Forrest and Texas A and M So he's doing a nice job with that
- 1:45duke program so far. And they're running backs Dalen Calhoun, as you mentioned,
- 1:49Jordan Waters. They all run run the ball very well, and they're
- 1:53i think one of their wide receivers if I'm correct on this, Jordan Moore
- 1:56was a quarterback. Now he's a wide receiver and he's made twelve catches already
- 2:00this year. Yeah, it was a quarterback. He's a heck of a
- 2:04receiver. Though. I'm hoping that they don't do the double pass or something.
- 2:07We'll be ready for that. But he's darn good receiver. Their receivers
- 2:12are all really good players. They're tight end is very impressive. He's you
- 2:15know, he's one of those guys that can block up inside and then you
- 2:19split him out and he can get himself open. I mean, he's a
- 2:22really good player. They're just a they're darn good football team. Darn good
- 2:25football team. Yeah, they got to win over Clemson to start their season.
- 2:30Hell of the opposition. As you mentioned to twenty eight points so far,
- 2:32all this quick thought on your offense, team in the last five games
- 2:36hadn't scored more than twenty you you know, made that point you said,
- 2:39we got to get better, we got to start forcing the ball down the
- 2:43field. Well, however you're going to do it. What's your thought on
- 2:46the offensive side of the ball for Yukon, how do you get this thing
- 2:49really generating some some I don't know what you want to call it. Some
- 2:53force to get the ball down the field. You know, it's been a
- 2:57struggle, you know, and I think you gotta you know, there's a
- 3:00lot of reasons why. Number one is the second year in a row we've
- 3:02lost our starting quarterback. You know, early in the season last week,
- 3:07the second drive of the of the first game this year, you know,
- 3:10I think it was early in the second quarter of the second game. So
- 3:15that disrupts a little of your rhythm. Obviously, having a really a whole
- 3:19new group of receivers, we disrupts your rhythm. Cam Ross didn't play much
- 3:23last year at all. Jordan Porter wasn't here, Brett Buckman wasn't here.
- 3:29So there's, you know, that consistency that builds through repetition. You know,
- 3:34we haven't gotten there yet. We didn't run the ball especially well the
- 3:38first three games, and so teams could you know, sit back and play
- 3:43a little bit more coverage made it which made it hard. But all those
- 3:46being things being said, they're really, you know, kind of they're just
- 3:49excuses we have to find as a staff. We have to find ways to
- 3:53get guys open. We have to we have to find ways to make sure
- 3:55that we're putting our quarterbacks in position to do what they do best. And
- 4:00then players got to go out and they got to execute, and they got
- 4:02to make contested catches. You know, not every you're not always going to
- 4:05be wide open. Sometimes you're gonna have to fight for the ball. And
- 4:09when we get in those positions, you know, we got to win more
- 4:11than we lose. And you know, the great thing is is you've got
- 4:15a bunch of people here. They're committed to getting better and not at all
- 4:19satisfied and and maybe disappointed, but not discouraged. So we're just gonna keep
- 4:28keep looking for and emphasizing what we believe will work for us. It's Military
- 4:33Appreciation Week this week, as Yukon takes on Duke Special, meaning obviously for
- 4:39those who protect us around the world. We're gonna talk to Gilanni Stafford and
- 4:44George Carroten and the latter half of the show. Coach Gilanni Stafford is an
- 4:47interesting guy. I mean, bright dude, played linebacker, running back in
- 4:51high school. Now you got him running the football. I mean everyone gets
- 4:55excited to see that stuff. He got into the end zone last week.
- 4:59Is he gonna be hard to control? Ego wise? Now this guy's scoring
- 5:02touchdowns for you. No, not Jilani. He's as down to earth as
- 5:05they get, hard worker, great kid. No one's gonna let his ego
- 5:12get out of control, and it wouldn't anyway because he's just not built that
- 5:14way. But it's fun to see you on ninety seven roll out on the
- 5:16field with the offense and I love that way he dove into the end zone.
- 5:19It's gonna make sure we take care of that football. So yeah,
- 5:24listen, you know you're always trying to find ways to utilize the players on
- 5:27your team, and Gilanni gives us a lot in that role. So but
- 5:30it does not forget. I don't want him forget his primary role as to
- 5:32be, you know, a defensive tackle, which maybe not as glamorous as
- 5:38being a running back, but hey, very impactful. Yeah, no doubt
- 5:41about it. We love him all right, coach. We appreciate it so
- 5:44much. Thanks. We'll see you on Saturday, Yukon and Dupe. That's
- 5:46Jamara. We're back with more. We're gonna talk to Jilanni, Stafford,
- 5:50George Carraton as we continue on the Yukon Football Coaches Show.
