- 0:00SPEAKER_05: So the most thing number now is when my page came up blue ray and I recreated little one that was in the colour.
- 0:06SPEAKER_05: So that's even clear before that.
- 0:08SPEAKER_05: I'm still young.
- 0:17SPEAKER_05: Twister one, twist or two, twistry three, twistry four, and then the shitty animation.
- 0:21SPEAKER_05: But the one that I s uh I'm gonna pick, which I stand by because I gave it a second shot and it's like no.
- 0:29SPEAKER_05: Ooh! Wait, no, I have a new Thank you for having me.
- 0:34SPEAKER_05: How you doing?
- 0:35SPEAKER_05: I'm doing alright.
- 0:36SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm excited to be back in town.
- 0:38SPEAKER_05: It's been like a year and a half.
- 0:40SPEAKER_05: I was here last January.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I remember.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: I think I came to see your Were you in South Theater Lock then you're I came to see the show.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Downstairs?
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Anyway, yeah.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, downstairs.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I came to see it then.
- 0:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, well thank you for coming.
- 0:52SPEAKER_05: Uh so good.
- 0:53SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 0:53SPEAKER_05: I it's it's always it's a weird room to do my show in because it's like got those stairs, and I feel like there's always a thing where I'm like, right, and how do I do an entrance that's uh not doesn't make me fall on my my f face, but uh glad to be in the upstairs this time and doing it.
- 1:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, the upstairs is very different.
- 1:10SPEAKER_05: Very.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: I've only done the upstairs once, and it was um but the time I did it, they had a a theatre show in there, and so um they had this big uh stage on there.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: And that like this big circular um exit kind of like go going across the stage.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: So like you people you kind of had to like go through it to come out like to get onto the stage.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: It looked very odd.
- 1:33SPEAKER_05: There's a a big theatrical show that is on uh in that room before mine this time around, and it's so fun watching them have to like tear it down and just being like, uh, I guess we'll figure out it's like I just gotta sort of wait for them to do a lot of teardown before I can set up.
- 1:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:47SPEAKER_05: Which is totally fine, but I am just like, okay, well, I am take your time, take your time.
- 1:50SPEAKER_05: I also imagine yours has a lot of stuff in it as well.
- 1:53SPEAKER_05: It does, but it's mostly instruments this time.
- 1:55SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 1:55SPEAKER_05: Not as much like physical props.
- 1:57SPEAKER_05: Um, but it is just like we gotta trot out a piano and then two guitars and a guitar.
- 2:02SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, well, just let's yeah.
- 2:04SPEAKER_05: Does the robot make a sure it does robot's back in a different context this time?
- 2:09SPEAKER_05: But I am just like, it's a it's just a fun sort of like uh my recurring character.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: I I love it so much.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: It was it was that's like one of my favorite bits from the last show.
- 2:18SPEAKER_05: It was a really thank you.
- 2:19SPEAKER_05: It was it was very fun.
- 2:20SPEAKER_05: I think it's uh also just a fun surprise of everyone being like, I thought this was a one-man show.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Who is this?
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you have so many bits in your show.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: Well, the last in the last show where it was just like people, like audience plants, and like uh people backstage and like and um you had the uh Britannic people uh guys because they directed it, didn't they?
- 2:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, uh, and they they really urged me to do the show, which was so awesome.
- 2:43SPEAKER_05: They're they're so lovely, and I I think the show came together really well because of them.
- 2:48SPEAKER_05: And I keep they're so busy now, uh having done like two movies this year and one of them having a kid.
- 2:54SPEAKER_05: I am I'm just like I keep texting them being like, Do you guys think you want to come see me?
- 2:58SPEAKER_05: It's like I know you can't direct it, but maybe you want to give me not something like a shot of them like that.
- 3:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 3:02SPEAKER_05: Uh but I love those guys so much.
- 3:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, oh nice.
- 3:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: So like you're you're you're saying upstairs like you're very happy with how it's come along so far.
- 3:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:10SPEAKER_05: I uh I'm I've done two two?
- 3:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, two pre I've already lost track.
- 3:15SPEAKER_05: I've done two of my six shows in town, uh, preparing for Edinburgh.
- 3:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 3:19SPEAKER_05: And it's gone well.
- 3:21SPEAKER_05: There's a new song in the show that I sort of had to uh I have to figure out how to like weave in and introduce it, but I uh the response has been good and people have been like it's a really it's laugh heavy, it's gag heavy.
- 3:34SPEAKER_05: I'm like, that's good.
- 3:35SPEAKER_05: I still feel like it's that thing of like uh have you heard the the Paul Newman uh ranch dressing story?
- 3:42SPEAKER_05: I I I'm aware he's got ranch dressing, but I don't know anything about it.
- 3:45SPEAKER_05: I think about this all the time.
- 3:46SPEAKER_05: A friend told it to me, but yeah, it's basically like uh now I'm like this is just gonna be a long fable, it's not super long, but uh basically the idea is that when uh Paul Newman made uh the Newman's own ranch dressing, like at his ranch, people would come to visit and taste it, they were like, this is incredible, you absolutely have to sell this.
- 4:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 4:02SPEAKER_05: And eventually they were like, okay, we will.
- 4:04SPEAKER_05: Uh and they sort of went through the formula of trying to figure out how to make it in a way that was packageable and to put on the shelf.
- 4:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 4:10SPEAKER_05: And they realized the only way to do it and make it like fresh and keep it like good enough to be on the shelf for a little bit was to make a version of it that's like a little bit diluted.
- 4:19SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 4:20SPEAKER_05: Uh, and so that was what they sold.
- 4:22SPEAKER_05: And uh everyone who made the ranch dressing was just like, this sucks.
- 4:26SPEAKER_05: It's not as good as the original.
- 4:27SPEAKER_05: It's it's just it's fucking bad, and we we should be upset that we're selling this.
- 4:31SPEAKER_05: Worldwide, everyone's like, this is incredible.
- 4:32SPEAKER_05: Thank God, like, holy shit, this is the greatest ranch dressing.
- 4:34SPEAKER_05: But all they can think is like, yeah, but it's not it's not the original.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: It's not the original, yeah.
- 4:39SPEAKER_05: And I feel like that's how I feel as a performer sometimes, where people are like, this is awesome, it's so good.
- 4:42SPEAKER_05: I'm just like, I fucked up this whole thing.
- 4:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I don't know.
- 4:44SPEAKER_05: I just shouldn't now.
- 4:46SPEAKER_05: It was a bad show.
- 4:46SPEAKER_05: And it's like people like, it's great, I don't know what you're talking about.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: I've heard um Questlov talk about that when they're when they're on stage of like each of them will put uh point to they'll they'll like make a note of who each of them who has made like however many mistakes within the show.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: Oh god.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: But like they'll make it as a joke and they'll just like play off against each other, but like, yeah, I and nobody notices that.
- 5:06SPEAKER_05: No, no, and also I think with live music sometimes too, especially when you're playing with a band and you're really good and really in sync, you kind of get into a rhythm of like, oh, you fuck up and you turn it into something, especially as a drummer.
- 5:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, very much of just like, oh, time to double stick on that one.
- 5:20SPEAKER_05: But yeah, um, but I I think this show is uh there's some like free form, but because it's a lot of songs, I do feel like it is uh less of me responding to the audience.
- 5:31SPEAKER_05: It's up for little moments here and there.
- 5:32SPEAKER_05: And I get very lucky that I have enough goodwill from the audience that when something does fuck up, it's like uh they're on my side about it.
- 5:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, like one of the biggest laughs I got last night was me having to be like, I'm sorry, I fucked this up, we have to do it again, and everyone's gonna be like, okay.
- 5:48SPEAKER_05: But yeah.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: It's interesting though, because like I feel like with your shows, I'd be like sitting there going, Is this part of it?
- 5:55SPEAKER_05: That's that's I've really uh I've built a lot of goodwill, but also there's a lot of like fake trickery in my shows that makes people just think any mistake is uh part of it.
- 6:04SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, that's good, because I just will make mistakes sometimes.
- 6:07SPEAKER_05: But I I'm glad that I've built in a way that people are like, he's trying to set us up.
- 6:10SPEAKER_05: I'm like, nope, I fell.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: I um I once had a bit that went it just like so I I I had a slide show up and the slide ended up being in the wrong place and it came at another time and I just ad-libbed on it.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: But it got like such a reaction that I like n then started putting it into the show and faking the the way that it goes.
- 6:30SPEAKER_05: I might be doing that uh soon after uh one thing that happened last night that made everyone laugh so hard, and I was just like, I'm glad that plays, but now I'm like, I should just fake it every night.
- 6:40SPEAKER_05: Uh but I think also this is a show where the more things that go wrong, the better it is at the end.
- 6:45SPEAKER_05: Oh, cool.
- 6:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's really fun.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm excited to see it.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: I wanna I'm not able to see it this time around, but like I I will come and see it eventually.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: I'm also I'm sure I'll be back uh in the Oh you yeah, you definitely I'm always here.
- 6:55SPEAKER_05: You're in Edinburgh this year, right?
- 6:57SPEAKER_05: I am, yeah.
- 6:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you're doing the full run?
- 6:58SPEAKER_05: Sure am.
- 6:58SPEAKER_05: Nice all 30, well, 25 days, I guess.
- 7:02SPEAKER_05: Jeez.
- 7:02SPEAKER_05: No, I'm I'm excited.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: You had a great time.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you had a great run last time.
- 7:05SPEAKER_05: That's the only reason I'm doing the full run.
- 7:06SPEAKER_05: I enjoyed it so much last time, and I felt like uh I really uh people were like, oh man, 30 days is is rough.
- 7:15SPEAKER_05: And I I was like, okay, I guess we'll prepare for that.
- 7:17SPEAKER_05: And then about three days in, I was like, no, I'm excited to do this every night.
- 7:19SPEAKER_05: I'm like, let's be let's get to the night.
- 7:21SPEAKER_05: I want to do the show.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: Oh, great.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: I um I was up there this at the same time and I came, I was wanting to go and see it, but I clashed every night, and I just like I cannot make this.
- 7:30SPEAKER_05: I have a lot of friends that that's been happening.
- 7:31SPEAKER_05: I have friends where it's like I clash with them at the Melbourne Comedy Fest when I was doing the show.
- 7:35SPEAKER_05: And then I clash with them again at fringe, and I'm like, this sucks.
- 7:37SPEAKER_05: We'll never see each other's shows.
- 7:39SPEAKER_05: But I I'm like, I'll I'll figure it out.
- 7:41SPEAKER_05: I'll I'll find an off day or something.
- 7:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: Is there anyone you're excited to see up there that you can think of?
- 7:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, I the thing is I always forget who's gonna be up there, but I have a lot of friends who are up there.
- 7:50SPEAKER_05: Uh, my friend Elf Lions, yeah, terrific.
- 7:52SPEAKER_05: She's gonna be up there.
- 7:53SPEAKER_05: Uh my friend Frankie McNair, I saw her show in Melbourne, terrific.
- 7:57SPEAKER_05: Um, I I don't know if I'm gonna be able to see this show, but Conk, uh, who uh it's the the same it's the show is called This He's the song's same song over and over for an hour.
- 8:09SPEAKER_05: Really funny.
- 8:10SPEAKER_05: Uh I met him in uh Melbourne and just found him so charming and funny.
- 8:16SPEAKER_05: Um who else?
- 8:17SPEAKER_05: My friend Abby Govinden.
- 8:19SPEAKER_05: Oh, Abby, yeah, Abby's great, yeah.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: Abby's here here at the moment as well.
- 8:22SPEAKER_05: Yes, yeah.
- 8:22SPEAKER_05: Uh Tom Clarkson uh does a show called Mr.
- 8:25SPEAKER_05: Thing that I'm very excited to see.
- 8:27SPEAKER_05: Uh I've I guess I have like a short list.
- 8:29SPEAKER_05: I was just like, I don't know if I know it.
- 8:30SPEAKER_05: And I was like, here's four.
- 8:31SPEAKER_05: But yeah.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm I'm excited to see Abby's as well.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: Because yeah, I I uh she came and did uh a show I produced recently.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: Like she's um she's here all the time now.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: She's here constantly.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she essentially lives here.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: It's great.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: She she seems to be living all over Europe at the moment.
- 8:45SPEAKER_05: She she travels more than anyone I know, and I'm like, I couldn't be me.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: I complain about traveling like four times a year.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: It's so funny because like the first time I met her was over Zoom for for this, actually, like six years ago.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: And it's just like, yeah, like I've I've known her since then, which is just but like come to see her like a number of times since then, but yeah, she's always here.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: She loves it.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: Um so you're here to talk about the m I asked uh you're one of the only people I've specifically asked to like talk about a movie, but I I feel like it had to be this this had to be reserved for you.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: I uh I appreciate that, yeah.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: And and it's uh Space Jam.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: Space Jam.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: So it's it's the original Space Jam, not the not the new legacy, yeah.
- 9:30SPEAKER_05: I a new legacy, yeah.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, not a new legacy.
- 9:32SPEAKER_05: I have no defense with that one.
- 9:33SPEAKER_02: I don't think anyone does.
- 9:34SPEAKER_05: No.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, you have you have like a long history with this.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: I do.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: You do have a long history with this.
- 9:41SPEAKER_05: Strange long history with it.
- 9:42SPEAKER_02: And then this is kind of like one of the first, I feel like it's one of the first times I came across you as well.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: It was from the meme?
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: Was from the song.
- 9:51SPEAKER_05: Oh, really?
- 9:52SPEAKER_05: Oh, I have a history even older.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: Wait, wait, wait, what was the meme?
- 9:56SPEAKER_05: Uh so this is a crazy story, and I was like, I was like, I'm shocked you know about that.
- 10:00SPEAKER_05: Basically, uh, when I was like maybe 13 through 15, I used to be a real like really uh I won't say big part, but I just like it was like a big part of my social life.
- 10:11SPEAKER_05: I was really involved in this video game forum called Destructoid that I don't know if they're around anymore, but uh basically uh there was a lot of us that just became friends off of this forum and would make like little blog posts about stuff.
- 10:24SPEAKER_05: And one time I was like, oh, I found a bunch of stuff from when I was a kid, which for me would have been like what six years prior than that.
- 10:30SPEAKER_05: I don't know why I was like, wow, what's a discovery?
- 10:33SPEAKER_05: Um, but so I I like did a uh thing where I like was like you guys remember this one?
- 10:38SPEAKER_05: You guys remember and it was like a copy of Zumbini's, a copy of whatever.
- 10:41SPEAKER_05: And then I had a copy of Space Jam, and I I took a photo where the idea was that uh I was blinking while I took the photo.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:48SPEAKER_05: Uh it didn't look like that.
- 10:50SPEAKER_05: It looks like I was nutting for the uh but I uh and then I posted that online and people ran with that and just started making it a thing where they would like post that repeatedly.
- 11:00SPEAKER_05: Uh I bet if you look Space Jam Kid, you might find it.
- 11:03SPEAKER_05: Um but maybe not.
- 11:05SPEAKER_05: It's been so long.
- 11:06SPEAKER_05: Um try without getting it to do it.
- 11:15SPEAKER_05: I I actually don't know if people know it's me.
- 11:17SPEAKER_05: Oh, right.
- 11:19SPEAKER_05: They're very first yeah I remember this.
- 11:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's me.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: Well oh I I remember this.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: Really wild.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: But people didn't know people don't know it's you?
- 11:27SPEAKER_05: People, I I mean I'm sure people do, but I I don't think they immediately connect.
- 11:31SPEAKER_05: I feel like I have a very weird history with the internet where a lot of people are like, oh, you were this guy?
- 11:37SPEAKER_05: This is 15, this is this is from Reddit 15 years ago.
- 11:40SPEAKER_05: And the so the post that you're looking at right now is when I was Space Jam came out on Blu-ray and I recreated that photo while I was in college.
- 11:47SPEAKER_05: So that's even earlier before that.
- 11:50SPEAKER_05: Like I'm so young in both of those photos, but especially in that first one.
- 11:53SPEAKER_05: Uh but yeah, I took that photo and they it became a meme.
- 11:56SPEAKER_05: It became a big thing on 4chan, and I hated seeing that because it got racist real quick.
- 11:59SPEAKER_05: Oh, of course, yeah.
- 12:00SPEAKER_05: But outside of that, it was just like uh, oh, that was my first uh I guess cultural connection to Space Jam outside of the yes.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: I I I remember this from so long ago.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: I had no idea that.
- 12:11SPEAKER_05: I don't I know, it's really wild.
- 12:13SPEAKER_05: Um and then the song that I think you're referring to is from my podcast, Punch Up the Jam.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: Which was like that was one of the I don't know if that was one of the first things that I discovered you from, but like I remember so I remember your Twitter from like a long time ago.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: But then you had your you had Punch Up to the Jam in like what 2018, 2017?
- 12:32SPEAKER_05: Must have been, yeah, definitely pre-COVID.
- 12:35SPEAKER_05: But I uh I think 2018, 2019 was about the time.
- 12:39SPEAKER_05: Um and yeah, the And this was one of the big ones that really took off, I feel like.
- 12:44SPEAKER_02: The song?
- 12:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: Maybe I I I remember this going everywhere.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: Oh, really?
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: Good to know.
- 12:49SPEAKER_05: Now I I I'm always I think with stuff like that, I'm always just like, I don't I don't know it's big until it's like being mentioned to me by other people.
- 12:55SPEAKER_05: But uh I feel like Punch Up the Jam was a podcast I did where the premise was um we uh we take popular songs and dissect them musically and dissect the lyrics, and then we jokingly have the idea of like this can be a song that's fixed, so we do a punch up of it, which is just like a way that we've rewritten or edited the song.
- 13:11SPEAKER_05: And it's so it was so much fun.
- 13:14SPEAKER_05: If I ever did a podcast again, I would bring this back.
- 13:16SPEAKER_05: The only problem is that it's so much working.
- 13:18SPEAKER_05: That's what I was about to say.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: It's like such a great premise, and it's such a great podcast, but like my god, the the work you must have had to put into it.
- 13:25SPEAKER_05: It was I do think it's like it gave me, it's sort of uh in a way, because it's like a lot of the stuff I'm doing in my show is Punch Up the Jam E, where it's like I'm doing a take on this, I'm doing a take on this.
- 13:34SPEAKER_05: Uh, I have a show, I have a song in my show that is essentially if I did a punch up the jam of how I beat Shaq by Aaron Carter.
- 13:41SPEAKER_05: Um, but it is it's so fun to do and it's so much work.
- 13:43SPEAKER_05: But one we did was for Space Jam.
- 13:45SPEAKER_05: Um we talked about the theme um by Quad City DJs, which is a great theme, really un unimpeachable theme.
- 13:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 13:52SPEAKER_05: Um, and I I did a a uh punch up for it that was me going like this uh this song doesn't talk about the plot of Space Jam.
- 13:59SPEAKER_05: And so we were like, well, why don't we do one that does talk about the plot of Space Jam?
- 14:03SPEAKER_05: And it's so funny.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: Like and like, yeah, because that was I was gonna say, like, essentially what you have done in that song is just recap, just recap the plot.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: And like that's that's essentially what uh we do across the whole of this podcast.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: But like we'll talk of we'll sprinkle in things, but like the fact that you've literally just done it in your song lyrics is so funny.
- 14:25SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and like I um I used to love when you would release you've you've kind of s you've kind of taken a step back from doing it now, haven't you?
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Of like releasing like the song, you would like release like the fake song within a movie.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: Like, it's funny, you say like an end credit song.
- 14:40SPEAKER_05: You say I took a step back from doing that.
- 14:42SPEAKER_05: I literally did it last night just after seeing Disclosure Day.
- 14:45SPEAKER_05: Uh but it's like it's a thing that's like I took a step back from doing it regularly, of it being like every year at the Oscars, I'll do that just because I think there's a lot of things I do where I'm like, it's fun to do on my own schedule, but not when everyone's like, you do it for this.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: I'm like, leave me alone.
- 14:57SPEAKER_05: Like your September video where it's just like, no, I can't do this anymore.
- 15:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think when it's like when it comes to me, I'm like, it's fun to make these on like but not regularly.
- 15:05SPEAKER_05: Uh but at the end of disclosure day, something happens that I just I it made me just immediately think of like it'd be very funny if it turned into a song.
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 15:13SPEAKER_05: Uh and so I was just like, I'm just gonna make one.
- 15:15SPEAKER_05: And I did like just before I went to bed and posted it, being like also I love being in a different time zone because I can just be like, I'm just gonna post this, and I don't, it's not my business anymore.
- 15:23SPEAKER_05: I'm going to bed.
- 15:24SPEAKER_05: But yeah, I I do feel like it's really fun to do the like end credit raps.
- 15:29SPEAKER_05: It's so funny.
- 15:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, thank you.
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like I I love all the Will Smith ones, yeah.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: If you talk to the Will Smith ones and then like a childish gambino and so fun, thank you.
- 15:36SPEAKER_05: I I think it's also like a very fun, like uh creative exercise to be like, I want this to be good and like it's like a puzzle, like I want it to lyrically work.
- 15:44SPEAKER_05: I want to make sure it feels right, like it scans right, that it doesn't feel like a this is doesn't sound anything like him.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: It's like I want it to it's it's like lyrically, it's got to sound like them and like the intonation and like everything.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: It's very hard to do that.
- 15:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I think that's why I enjoy it so much.
- 15:57SPEAKER_05: I like just like walking around and just being like, what is the right word for this?
- 16:00SPEAKER_05: or and then be like, no, I gotta updo or undo that entirely.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: But then it's also gotta be funny as well.
- 16:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 16:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:05SPEAKER_02: It's really it's a really good creative exercise.
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: Oh, I love it.
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: Like like so with with the Space Jam one, so you came into that with doing it through Punch Up the Jam, but like is it something that you discussed wanting to do?
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: Was this like a a thing, a song that you picked outright um because you wanted to do something from Space Jam, or is it because you wanted to or is it something that like people suggested to you?
- 16:30SPEAKER_05: I'm honestly not sure.
- 16:31SPEAKER_05: I I want to say that it's something that I did just because I was like, I we want to talk about Space Jam.
- 16:37SPEAKER_05: Um, but I feel like a lot of the songs we did were just us going like, what a good song, you know?
- 16:41SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 16:42SPEAKER_05: Um Yeah, there was a lot of that for sure, I remember.
- 16:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 16:45SPEAKER_05: Uh and it's funny because the entire premise of the podcast is like we have to shit on it, but it's like a lot of times it's just us going, this rocks.
- 16:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 16:51SPEAKER_05: And like even when it was us shitting on us, it it's like, yeah, but we we chose to listen to it for an hour.
- 16:56SPEAKER_05: We like the song enough to discuss it.
- 16:57SPEAKER_05: It's just more fun to come at it with a critical lens.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:01SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: And that I think that's the opp it's almost the opposite of this, which is like where it's like people so many people are shitting on these movies, but like people love them still.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: And like I I want people to kind of come in and like uh talk about things that they actually love and and uh bring that joy to it that they don't uh that that it's not usually there for a lot of these things.
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: So like uh Space Jam, I feel like you're you're like a few years younger than me, but I also feel like people of sort of like our age bracket are kind of so in love with this movie and and then everyone else is just not.
- 17:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's a real you had to be there kind of thing.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:41SPEAKER_05: And I uh I I feel like this goes against the the premise of me having to talk about this movie, but I So it was the 30th anniversary.
- 17:50SPEAKER_05: I guess it's this year's the 30th anniversary of Space Jammel.
- 17:52SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, I guess it would be.
- 17:53SPEAKER_05: Which is crazy.
- 17:54SPEAKER_05: Warner Brothers did a promotional event for the movie, uh uh where they were like, they took over the Warner Brothers lot and put up a bunch of like like they had uh basketball hoops and things where you can make a custom uh hat and all this stuff.
- 18:07SPEAKER_05: And I uh I was invited, I went with my friend, and then they did a screening of the movie, and it was the first time I'd seen it in a while, and it does not look good.
- 18:16SPEAKER_05: It does not hold up.
- 18:18SPEAKER_05: And I feel crazy saying that because I do love it.
- 18:21SPEAKER_05: Here's the thing, I will still defend it.
- 18:22SPEAKER_05: I think it's still the kind of movie that people uh are are like down on in a way where I'm like, this is just you looking back at something that you love with kid gloves and not being generous enough with it.
- 18:32SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 18:32SPEAKER_05: But I specifically remember being like, why does it look like that?
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: I I've just pulled I I pulled up your little box review.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: I put I remember you I saw this review and I was just like, that's so funny.
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: But like you wrote you wrote all you wrote is why are they sh all shaded like that?
- 18:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, why are they all sh- It's like they they were it's like they were like, we want this to look 3D or like look, and but it's also just like they kind of just drew the shading on, and I'm like, it really looks bad on a big screen.
- 18:57SPEAKER_05: I think it's also just because it looks like uh, oh, the the shading and the lighting is moving around separately from the character.
- 19:04SPEAKER_05: And it's like just the hand-drawn animation thing of them trying to do 3D and hand-drawn animation.
- 19:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I really respect that, especially now in an age where like everything's so automated and even just attempts at hand-drawn animation still look very digital, but I I just couldn't stop thinking like this, it's not it really doesn't look great.
- 19:19SPEAKER_05: It's still a funny movie, and still a fun movie.
- 19:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but yeah.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: It's like I um so I I rewatched it last night.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: I rewatched it on my phone.
- 19:28SPEAKER_05: It's like so it's very different to how very yeah, it's it's I also don't know if they were playing like a remastered version or whatever, but yeah.
- 19:35SPEAKER_05: It's I mean, it's still it's somewhere like I want to watch Space Jam, and I'd be like, okay, great.
- 19:39SPEAKER_05: It's it's fun.
- 19:40SPEAKER_05: Uh Michael Jordan accepts being in the Looney Tunes world too quickly.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: I I did think that.
- 19:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 19:46SPEAKER_05: I did think that.
- 19:47SPEAKER_05: He's just sort of like, all right, guys, we gotta teach you to.
- 19:49SPEAKER_05: I'm like, no, get out of there.
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: You have kids, dog.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: Where are where do they think you are right now?
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: And then he's the one of the first things he says is um he's like, well, not one of the first things he says, but he says it to Danny DeVito's character.
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: He goes, Um, if you um he's just like, I'll make you a deal.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: If I win, I I get to go home and you free all the people.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: If not, I'll I'll stay here forever.
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: Crazy.
- 20:12unknown: Crazy.
- 20:12SPEAKER_05: Really insane.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: It's just he's just so on board with it.
- 20:15SPEAKER_05: That's the most Michael Jordan thing about it, though, because he is a gambling addict.
- 20:19SPEAKER_05: So he's just going like, fuck it, I'll do it, I'll do it.
- 20:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 20:21SPEAKER_05: Uh if I win, you let me go.
- 20:23SPEAKER_05: And it's like, hey, don't do that.
- 20:25SPEAKER_05: Don't do that at all.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: I didn't even associate it with the gambling person.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 20:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's just sort of like, tell you what, and it's like, this was not, this wasn't on the plate.
- 20:33SPEAKER_05: You offered this.
- 20:34SPEAKER_05: He it's very, I feel like there's a few things in this movie that I look back at it now with a little more knowledge of who uh Michael Jordan is and like seeing parts of the last dance, and I'm just like, it's really funny how much his personality is genuinely on display here.
- 20:47SPEAKER_05: Where it's like uh uh just the fact that like he he is like a lot nicer here than he is in real life, presumably, but it also is just like the fact that he's like, I'm gonna make a challenge and that'll that'll do it.
- 20:58SPEAKER_05: The the fact that he uh is so stringent about who he plays with, the fact that he's uh what's it?
- 21:04SPEAKER_05: Um the just even including the baseball stuff, which is so funny because I'm like, I wouldn't highlight that as like a good part of your life.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: No.
- 21:11SPEAKER_02: Do you do you know the the conspiracy theory?
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's so great, isn't it?
- 21:14SPEAKER_05: It's great.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: It's like the so for anyone who doesn't know, the conspiracy theory is that he was such a gambling addict that the NBA let him go and he went on to folks play pay baseball because like they didn't want it to come out.
- 21:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: And then he went to play baseball for what a year or two and then came and then he came back to the NBA.
- 21:32SPEAKER_05: He was basically on uh what's it called?
- 21:35SPEAKER_05: That like what's like he was essentially bench, but it was just like they were like, You're suspended from the game, and instead of doing that, he was just like, I'm gonna retire and play baseball.
- 21:43SPEAKER_05: Then which is so funny.
- 21:44SPEAKER_05: Do you know the other conspiracy theory?
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: Um I don't think so.
- 21:48SPEAKER_05: About his dad?
- 21:49SPEAKER_05: That his father was killed over his gambling debts.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: I've heard this, yes.
- 21:53SPEAKER_05: Uh which I'm like, I don't want to touch that.
- 21:56SPEAKER_05: But yeah.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: Um Yeah, that's pretty dark.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: To uh is that him because it also like his dad apparently wanted him to play baseball his whole life.
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: Oh, really?
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, some is something there's something there.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: Maybe.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, not in the movie.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: In the movie, it opens with his dad wanting him to go into basketball.
- 22:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, also his dad being like, Oh, what you gonna do, kid?
- 22:16SPEAKER_05: He's like, I'm gonna do it.
- 22:17SPEAKER_05: And it's just whenever this is a thing, it's like a jukebox musical thing, especially.
- 22:21SPEAKER_05: But like, whenever in a movie they flashback to when they were a kid and they just predict their whole life, I'm like, no, that's not how it works for anybody.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: That's never been.
- 22:28SPEAKER_05: I love the idea that we're supposed to believe that it's good for a story, but I'm like, just tell us you want to do something else, and then just be like, he really loved basketball, though.
- 22:35SPEAKER_05: He's like, I'm gonna be the first astronaut, uh, I'm gonna be the first man to walk on the moon.
- 22:40SPEAKER_05: And then he's like, I want to play basketball instead.
- 22:42SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 22:42SPEAKER_05: Uh that always gets me in a movie, and I'm like, it's a kid's movie.
- 22:45SPEAKER_05: It's a dumb nitpick, but but it is funny, like it is so funny every time.
- 22:49SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 22:49SPEAKER_02: It's it's it's such a cliche as well of like a kid's of kids' movies, I feel like.
- 22:53SPEAKER_02: I'm trying to think of like some other ones, but it's uh it's I've seen it in so many, and then it's also like the the musical biopics as well doing a lot.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: Um but I I I'm trying to think of like so.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: Do you remember the first time you saw this?
- 23:06SPEAKER_05: I mean, it must have been as a kid.
- 23:07SPEAKER_05: I I I don't think I have any strong memory of the stuff.
- 23:10SPEAKER_05: You don't have a strong memory.
- 23:11SPEAKER_05: No.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: I I would have seen it, so this is '96, so I would have been seven and I went to see this.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: I remember I remember going to see this.
- 23:19SPEAKER_05: I wonder if I went to see I would have been four.
- 23:21SPEAKER_05: Uh or maybe three.
- 23:23SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, I must have seen it in theaters, but I wonder it's like I also think it's there are a few movies that I saw so many times as a kid because it'd be like, oh though, they need to put something on the TV at daycare or whatever.
- 23:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 23:34SPEAKER_05: And this is definitely one of them.
- 23:35SPEAKER_02: What what are the other ones?
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: Uh Grease?
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: They put on Grease at daycare.
- 23:40SPEAKER_05: Repeat, I Greece is a core memory.
- 23:42SPEAKER_05: It's uh absolutely they did.
- 23:44SPEAKER_05: Um, they put on uh never ending story, which I was always like, this is boring.
- 23:48SPEAKER_05: And I also I would take a nap and then wake up.
- 23:49SPEAKER_05: I'm like, oh my god, is it really a never ending?
- 23:52SPEAKER_05: How do they do that?
- 23:52SPEAKER_05: Which is funny because now I it's a 90-minute movie.
- 23:54SPEAKER_05: I don't know what it's 90 minutes, but it's it's a long, it's a long 90 minutes.
- 23:58SPEAKER_05: They got a lot in there.
- 23:59SPEAKER_05: Uh and then this movie, Gone Fishing with uh Danny Glover and Joe Pesci.
- 24:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I remember that.
- 24:04SPEAKER_05: I gotta rewatch that.
- 24:04SPEAKER_05: That's the one where I'm like, I remember the catchphrase, but I don't remember the movie.
- 24:08SPEAKER_02: I remember the poster.
- 24:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 24:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 24:10SPEAKER_05: Great poster.
- 24:11SPEAKER_05: Um, this movie starts off with such a bang, though, because I do feel like even in theaters, like uh the rewatching it again, the way that those credits hit, it feels good.
- 24:22SPEAKER_05: It feels powerful.
- 24:23SPEAKER_05: You're like, oh, you're really rocked in for it.
- 24:25SPEAKER_05: And it's like you don't really have that in movies anymore where they're just like Michael Jordan, bugs, bunny.
- 24:29SPEAKER_05: Like, I was like, this is awesome, actually.
- 24:30SPEAKER_05: I'm so in on this.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: It's great, it's such a good opening.
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: It really is.
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: And like one of the things that we've been talking about is like the music, but like the the soundtrack to this is so good.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's so good.
- 24:41SPEAKER_02: I I remember so I remember going to see this and then getting the soundtrack on CD and repeatedly playing it.
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: It opens with Fly Like an Eagle.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: Really good cover.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, great cover.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: Then it's got uh something called The Winner by Coolia.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: I don't remember what it was.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: You're a winner, you gotta keep pushing.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: I don't even remember it.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: I watched it last night and don't remember this.
- 25:05SPEAKER_05: I the thing is, I even separately from the movie, I've listened to the soundtrack so many times, so there's so many songs that I listen to.
- 25:11SPEAKER_05: But like uh the one that I don't like, it's like I know it, but it's not stuck in my head.
- 25:15SPEAKER_05: But a crazy fact the song Buggin, performed by Bugs Bunny, written by Jay-Z.
- 25:20SPEAKER_05: I've just seen, yeah.
- 25:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: Insane.
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: And there's another one, the other crazy one on this is Basketball Jones by Barry White and Chris Rock.
- 25:29SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 25:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I'm like, what you get you do a cr uh a kids movie about basketball, and you're like, I want a Chris Rockin allude in there.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: And you know, do you know what this this is a cover as well?
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: It's a cover of a Cheechin Chong song.
- 25:43SPEAKER_05: Sure is, which is crazy.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: Basketball jones.
- 25:46SPEAKER_05: It's yeah, which is so they were like, we want to, you know, church this up for the kids, but we still want to make sure a com a raunchy comedian is involved.
- 25:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: At the height of like his raunchiness as well.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: Like he wasn't doing kids' movies at this point.
- 25:59SPEAKER_05: It's it comes into the movie in a really fun way, like though, because it's like when uh when Charles Barkley loses his powers.
- 26:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 26:06SPEAKER_05: And he also that entire subplot, so funny.
- 26:08SPEAKER_05: Great, it's so great.
- 26:09SPEAKER_05: It's such a great idea.
- 26:10SPEAKER_05: Pure gags, but it's really just like it would be easy for them to just be like they stole the guy's powers, and that's not a thing anymore.
- 26:16SPEAKER_05: But then tapping back in and being like, we want you to watch as these uh these famous players are just moping around.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's great.
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: And he's per he's the perfect person for that because he's so funny, Doc Barkley.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: He's such a funny com he's such a comedic performer.
- 26:29SPEAKER_05: And also, like, just I I think it's because it's of a time.
- 26:33SPEAKER_05: Like, I don't think you could get this many players to do it so committedly now.
- 26:38SPEAKER_05: But it's like they're not just there for like the scene where they lose their powers, they're there for what they come back and like they're acting.
- 26:43SPEAKER_05: I'm like, it's so fun, and uh also weirdly physical.
- 26:48SPEAKER_05: The thing, the scene where it's like the powers get stolen, they like fall back and stuff.
- 26:52SPEAKER_05: I'm like, damn, these athletes are like commit, they were like, we want to do a good job.
- 26:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's awesome.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: It's really surprising as well, like for for them all to be so committed to like a kid's film where they're like just this this had no IP.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: Well, it did have IP in the Looney Tunes, but like it didn't really like it.
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: It wasn't it wasn't established.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:09SPEAKER_05: Did you know that they wanted to do other jam movies?
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: I heard what was the other one I heard?
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: I I can't remember the other two.
- 27:17SPEAKER_05: Or maybe it was Skate Jam, I think.
- 27:19SPEAKER_05: Skate Jam.
- 27:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: Skate Jam with uh Tony Hawk.
- 27:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, which still do it now.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: That would be so good.
- 27:25SPEAKER_05: It would it would make so much I think it'd still work.
- 27:27SPEAKER_05: It'd be it would work more than uh a new legacy did, I'll tell you that.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: I don't know why.
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: Well, I know why they did it with LeBron, but like it was so boring.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: And then like the fact like all the people behind it as well, like you've got um uh Ryan Kugler.
- 27:43SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, well, yeah.
- 27:44SPEAKER_05: Which is weird, like how you're gonna be like, sometimes you're a producer and you're not you're there just to like make sure the project gets done, but you aren't your creative voice is not in it.
- 27:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I feel like that was the case there.
- 27:55SPEAKER_05: I also uh not to talk too much about a new legacy, but I feel like so much of that movie is being like, you know what people love about Looney Tunes is the fact that it's IP.
- 28:04SPEAKER_05: What if we have other IP in here?
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: It's like who cares?
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's ready.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: They've just made Ready Player Wise.
- 28:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I they really don't get the appeal, and it's not like, whoa, is that is that the Transformers behind them?
- 28:13SPEAKER_05: It's just like it doesn't matter.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: No, yeah.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: Like, why why is um why Game of Thrones in this?
- 28:19SPEAKER_02: Why why is the Matrix in this?
- 28:21SPEAKER_05: They use some weird ones too.
- 28:22SPEAKER_05: I think Pennywise is in there.
- 28:23SPEAKER_05: Pennywise is in there.
- 28:24SPEAKER_05: Do kids like Pennywise?
- 28:26SPEAKER_05: Um but yeah, it's uh a new legacy is a strange one.
- 28:30SPEAKER_05: Um and also a little too like they're aware that the algorithm and like their the obsession with IP is deadly and make that the plop, but not in a way where they are like fixing that.
- 28:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: And then Don Cheadle's in it, and like he's too good to be in it.
- 28:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, although it it is fun when someone like I'm like in the same way that it's like you used to have character actors not slumming it, but being like hamming it up as a villain.
- 28:53SPEAKER_05: And so I'm like, I like that Don Cheadle plays a guy named Algae Rhythm.
- 28:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and is just literally just there to destroy the world.
- 28:59SPEAKER_05: Uh, but there's a it's not as like it doesn't devote enough time to being goofy in the way that Space Jam does.
- 29:06SPEAKER_05: Exactly, yeah.
- 29:06SPEAKER_05: Like you don't have a and you you kind of get a they try to make the Looney Tunes the side characters this time.
- 29:12SPEAKER_05: Like they they don't have a Wayne Knight, they don't have the Bill Murray Well, they try to do the Bill Murray stuff with Michael B.
- 29:17SPEAKER_05: Jordan, and that just doesn't work.
- 29:19SPEAKER_02: Oh, that was yeah.
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: And it was so obvious that was coming off.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: Of course, yeah.
- 29:22SPEAKER_02: Like everyone knows it.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: Um I saw something about Wayne Knight because they offered it to um a number of people before.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: So it was Michael J.
- 29:32SPEAKER_02: Fox first.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: Huh.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: Then Jason Alexander.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: I could see that, but And then Chevy Chase.
- 29:39SPEAKER_05: Oh no.
- 29:40SPEAKER_05: The thing is, uh Chevy Chase is too uh would play it too, especially his time uh at this time in history, like he played cool guys, you know, he was Fletch.
- 29:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah you don't want a guy showing up to be like, I'm also cool.
- 29:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 29:54SPEAKER_05: Uh like it was sort of him doing the same things the Bill Murray character would do.
- 29:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I would have said I could I can see him doing the Bill Murray role, but like not the Yeah, he wouldn't have to do that.
- 30:02SPEAKER_05: And if he's doing the Bill Murray role as Chevy Chase, I think we'd all just be like, you seem unknown, like Bill Murray still had a charm, I think, basically.
- 30:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 30:09SPEAKER_05: Um Michael J.
- 30:10SPEAKER_05: Fox is interesting.
- 30:12SPEAKER_05: You you get a lot of Michael J jokes, I think, you out of that.
- 30:15SPEAKER_05: I think he it would be he'd have a lot of fun playing like second fiddle to Michael Jordan.
- 30:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 30:21SPEAKER_05: I think I could I could see that Jason Alexander, I'm like, a little bit of a parallel move.
- 30:26SPEAKER_05: It's a parallel move.
- 30:26SPEAKER_02: I think that's I think they went to him and then he turned it down and then they went, okay, well, who else can get Wayne Knight?
- 30:31SPEAKER_05: I also think Wayne Knight's a better move.
- 30:32SPEAKER_05: Like, I think Jason Alexander is he's doing Seinfeld, and it's like not as low status.
- 30:38SPEAKER_05: Like, I think Wayne Knight in Seinfeld is a little lower status, a little more you you relish in seeing him like lose and be a little like sloppy and messed up than you do Jason Alexander.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I yeah, I agree.
- 30:51SPEAKER_02: I think Wayne Knight was actually like the perfect person to cast for this.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: Truly.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: And like he's he's very funny in this.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: And one of the things so one of the things actually about him in this movie is like when when he gets squished um by the monsters, and they do like the the CGI kind of thing, and it's like that effect that you never see anymore.
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: But like, I I don't know if you remember this, but like the the face that they put over they use to like cover them.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: It's like this really 90s look to it.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: Where it's like, is it like he's flat?
- 31:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's flat.
- 31:22SPEAKER_02: But then I don't know how they used to do it, but it's just so interesting because it's like it brings back such memories of like, oh, this everything looked like this in the 90s.
- 31:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 31:29SPEAKER_02: Uh when they tried to do CGI.
- 31:31SPEAKER_05: Yes, it's uh a little rubbery, it's less, it's got less texture, it's just it feels like they it's everything's a little spheres, very smooth.
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:39SPEAKER_02: And I don't know, there's something really nostalgic about it though.
- 31:42SPEAKER_05: I also I love that like you would think it's like, oh no, something happened to him that would kill a man and it doesn't kill him.
- 31:48SPEAKER_05: It's like, well, we're using cartoon effects.
- 31:50SPEAKER_05: And it's like, are they in the real world at that point?
- 31:52SPEAKER_05: No, they're in the loony world.
- 31:53SPEAKER_05: They're in the loony, yeah.
- 31:54SPEAKER_04: Okay, yeah.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: It's when they're playing the the game.
- 31:56SPEAKER_02: Uh so fun.
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: I like, yeah.
- 31:59SPEAKER_02: But like Michael Jordan, do you like how much do you know about like how familiar are you with like basketball and history and everything?
- 32:08SPEAKER_02: Like, are you like middlingly so?
- 32:10SPEAKER_05: I I have like the cursory knowledge of basketball and then a lot of extra facts, but I've I've never been someone who like follows the game intently.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: But uh Do you know where he was at his in his career at this point?
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: He was playing for the Charlotte Hornets at this point?
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: No.
- 32:23SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 32:24SPEAKER_05: I don't I'm asking.
- 32:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, sorry.
- 32:25SPEAKER_05: I don't I don't actually know.
- 32:26SPEAKER_05: The movie focus is like very bulls heavy, which was like uh 969.
- 32:32SPEAKER_05: Oh, he is he's at the bulls right now.
- 32:33SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, he's at the right.
- 32:34SPEAKER_05: Yes, because 96-97 was the back-to-back championship games.
- 32:37SPEAKER_05: Oh but yeah, I think Charlotte Hornets was I don't even know.
- 32:42SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 32:42SPEAKER_05: It doesn't matter.
- 32:43SPEAKER_05: But yeah, he's at the he's in the Bulls uh at this era.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: Okay, so he is still like prime is he like in the prime.
- 32:50SPEAKER_05: I think because like 9697 is like him, Scottie Pippen, like uh it's like the dream team.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: Wow, so like that's so that's such a weird like parallel, not parallel, it's such a weird thing to like kind of like disappear for a little bit and go and make this movie.
- 33:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it must have been like we're gonna do this in the off season, and then you go right back.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: Uh I did hear like he was like um training before and after filming each day.
- 33:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 33:14SPEAKER_05: I'm sure he's also probably the kind of guy who's like, I'm all I'm always training.
- 33:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 33:18SPEAKER_05: His whole thing has always just been like nothing gets in the way of me being the absolute greatest.
- 33:22SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, that's probably made you an awful person, but yeah.
- 33:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, yeah, it's it's crazy, isn't it?
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: Because it's like, I don't know if I could ever be that committed to anything.
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: No, I don't like winning that much.
- 33:36SPEAKER_05: No, I don't there's nothing I want to be the greatest at so much that I wouldn't just be like, I'm gonna enjoy my day today.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:42SPEAKER_05: Um exactly.
- 33:43SPEAKER_05: But that's why he's Michael Jordan, we're not.
- 33:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: But then it's also like this is why he's seen as he is, and we're not.
- 33:50SPEAKER_05: Well, it's still the funny thing is like all that did make it's like also a different cultural thing where it's like you couldn't have someone who was that good.
- 33:57SPEAKER_05: I guess LeBron probably was one of the last ones, but it's like someone who is that good whose name becomes a shorthand for greatness.
- 34:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 34:04SPEAKER_05: So quick, like Jordan.
- 34:05SPEAKER_05: Uh I guess you get Ronaldo, maybe.
- 34:08SPEAKER_05: But I think it's like a thing where it's like it used to happen, it used to be a lot different in an era where there weren't so many celebrities.
- 34:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 34:17SPEAKER_05: Like we just don't have a monoculture anymore.
- 34:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's true.
- 34:20SPEAKER_05: But I feel like you can't have new people now where it's like we're gonna use their name as a shorthand for greatness.
- 34:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:28SPEAKER_05: It's like he's been around for so long.
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: He has, yeah.
- 34:30SPEAKER_05: So is LeBron.
- 34:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: I guess that's true, yeah.
- 34:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 34:34SPEAKER_05: I mean, I'm like maybe Steph Curry, but he's also been around for a while.
- 34:37SPEAKER_02: Uh I I don't know if I put Steph Curry in that.
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: No, no.
- 34:40SPEAKER_05: Also, same.
- 34:41SPEAKER_02: Um I don't anyway.
- 34:42SPEAKER_02: And I don't even know that much about I don't even know a huge amount about basketball, but like I know enough to know that he's not quite at that level.
- 34:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 34:48SPEAKER_05: I the way I see it is like think of things where it's like your mom would be like if you say Jordan, she's like Michael Jordan.
- 34:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:54SPEAKER_05: I say curry, she's like, what?
- 34:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 34:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: I had a question about the song that you wrote then.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: Like, had you do you remember how long it took you to write this?
- 35:02SPEAKER_05: I I not to brag, I'm very good at writing these.
- 35:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 35:06SPEAKER_05: Uh, and I feel like it always takes me less time than I think, or I get into a groove and I sort of end up writing it all.
- 35:12SPEAKER_05: And it's like, uh, I think when it was just a lyric punch up, it'd be very quick.
- 35:16SPEAKER_05: And I think this one was also I I performed it live, so I didn't have to like record it or mix it, which was always nice.
- 35:21SPEAKER_05: I want to say this one took me like an hour or two.
- 35:24SPEAKER_05: Jesus Christ.
- 35:25SPEAKER_05: I think it was just sort of the thing where it's like uh you have the rhythm and you have the jokes that you want to hit, and then it is just being like, uh, especially when it is just being like the song is written.
- 35:35SPEAKER_05: You're doing a parody of a song.
- 35:36SPEAKER_05: It's like just sort of make sure it rhymes, make sure it's in the same skant and whatnot.
- 35:39SPEAKER_05: But yeah.
- 35:40SPEAKER_02: But you're also like recapping the film as it goes along.
- 35:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 35:43SPEAKER_05: Uh it was also me being like, I want to make sure that it's not like uh, oh, we've covered too much up top, and then at the end she's just like, and wrap-up or whatever.
- 35:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:50SPEAKER_05: Uh so it isn't me trying to be like, yeah, at this part be here, at this part be here, and by the end, it's just like yeah.
- 35:57SPEAKER_02: I just wanted to pull like some of the lyrics from it.
- 35:59SPEAKER_02: It's like you put like, how did this only cost eight, 80 million?
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: Joe Pitka should have got an Oscar NOM.
- 36:04SPEAKER_05: Uh things I don't well, no, I don't stand by.
- 36:08SPEAKER_05: They also didn't have a uh animated Oscar uh at this point, but if they did, I would have said, Yeah, they should have got one.
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: I'm trying to think what came out in '96 that what what else would have been.
- 36:17SPEAKER_02: I bet it would have got it to James and the giant peach.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, okay.
- 36:20SPEAKER_02: Fair.
- 36:21SPEAKER_02: But I but I also re-watched that recently, and it sucks.
- 36:25SPEAKER_05: Really?
- 36:26SPEAKER_05: It's bad.
- 36:26SPEAKER_05: Oh no.
- 36:27SPEAKER_05: That's Henry Selleck, right?
- 36:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 36:28SPEAKER_05: I yeah, I don't want to re-watch then.
- 36:30SPEAKER_05: I I remember watching as a kid and being like, this movie scared me, but also I uh being like, oh my god, they said ass at one point.
- 36:36SPEAKER_05: Um that's that sucks that it sucks.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: It it's so boring.
- 36:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:42SPEAKER_05: It's like it also now thinking about this movie, 80 million is uh It's a lot.
- 36:48SPEAKER_05: It's a lot.
- 36:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 36:49SPEAKER_05: I'm like, how does it only cost 80 million?
- 36:52SPEAKER_05: In 96.
- 36:53SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 36:53SPEAKER_02: That's probably like one what 150 now or something.
- 36:56SPEAKER_02: Maybe more.
- 36:56SPEAKER_02: That's yeah.
- 36:57SPEAKER_05: That's an expensive movie.
- 36:59SPEAKER_05: And it can't just be like Michael Jordan's fee.
- 37:02SPEAKER_05: No, I he probably got a lot.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: I don't know what he got for.
- 37:04SPEAKER_05: I'm sure he got a lot, but like the animation must have been like really expensive.
- 37:08SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, for sure.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: But like, do you know what it do you know what it made?
- 37:12SPEAKER_02: Do you happen to know what it made?
- 37:15SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna guess 200 million.
- 37:17SPEAKER_05: 230.
- 37:18SPEAKER_05: See, so they were like, we know this is a good investment.
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: Um It was the highest grossing basketball movie uh of all time until like two years ago when this movie Slam Dunk is anime animation.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: That's the only one that And it's just cleared it.
- 37:34SPEAKER_02: It's only just cleared like 250.
- 37:36SPEAKER_05: That's fascinating.
- 37:37SPEAKER_05: I would have thought something would have been that's there's been so many basketball movies.
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: I would have New Legacy would have beaten it even.
- 37:45SPEAKER_05: Well, I think New Legacy did New Legacy go to streaming?
- 37:47SPEAKER_05: Oh, yes, it did.
- 37:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you're right.
- 37:49SPEAKER_05: But also in theaters, it's not it's not clear in that.
- 37:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:51SPEAKER_05: Um it might have, but it would have been like just people being like, well, there's no other kids' movies around right now.
- 37:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:56SPEAKER_05: Um God, the streaming era has uh stolen so many records from us.
- 38:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 38:00SPEAKER_05: I I find that so fascinating.
- 38:02SPEAKER_05: It's really what other basketball movies have not.
- 38:04SPEAKER_05: I mean, it is culturally.
- 38:05SPEAKER_05: I'm like, when I say basketball movie, I'm like, what else do we have?
- 38:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 38:09SPEAKER_02: But like I'm trying to think of like other basketball movies now.
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: Love and basketball, Coach Carter.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: Coach Carter, yeah.
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: I'm actually I'm surprised Coach Carter goes to the biggest.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: I don't think Coach Carter was that big though.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: I feel like it was really big here.
- 38:20SPEAKER_05: Oh, really?
- 38:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 38:21SPEAKER_05: That's fascinating to me.
- 38:23SPEAKER_05: Britain went crazy for Coach Carter.
- 38:25SPEAKER_05: I remember it being a very big thing here.
- 38:27SPEAKER_05: Huh.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: Maybe I'm like misremembering.
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: No, no, maybe you're right.
- 38:31SPEAKER_02: Oh, it did not grow.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: Jeez, it grossed 76 on a 30.
- 38:36SPEAKER_05: Which is still a win, but I am like, it's nowhere near.
- 38:39SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 38:40SPEAKER_05: Highest grossing basketball movie of all time.
- 38:42SPEAKER_05: Crazy, isn't it?
- 38:42SPEAKER_05: It's also like that movie Slam Dunk, I'm like, uh, which is it's the first slam dunk, right?
- 38:47SPEAKER_05: The first slam dunk.
- 38:48SPEAKER_05: I like that movie, I I've heard of it before, but I didn't realize it was that big.
- 38:52SPEAKER_05: I didn't either.
- 38:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 38:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: It's also like, I don't think it did that well worldwide.
- 38:57SPEAKER_02: I think it's just like mainly Japan and and China.
- 39:00SPEAKER_05: Which I guess I'm like, if you if you've got it's still that mostly domestic$250 million gross for an anime.
- 39:07SPEAKER_05: Really good.
- 39:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 39:08SPEAKER_05: I gotta watch that.
- 39:09SPEAKER_05: Some of the other ones like Mike.
- 39:12SPEAKER_05: Sure, not not gonna be It's not gonna beat it.
- 39:14SPEAKER_02: No.
- 39:15SPEAKER_02: Uh the one the only one that I could see well, this would have been prior to Space Jam as well, but it's White Man Can't Jump, which was a great movie.
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:25SPEAKER_02: Um was it like semi-pro, that's not gonna do anything.
- 39:28SPEAKER_05: No.
- 39:29SPEAKER_05: Well, actually, I mean what is the semi-pro?
- 39:31SPEAKER_05: Because I'm like, it's still a Will Farrell, John C.
- 39:33SPEAKER_05: Riley like comedy.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 39:37SPEAKER_02: Uh wow, the budget for that was 90 million.
- 39:39SPEAKER_05: Where I guess basketball movies are expensive to shoot.
- 39:45SPEAKER_05: Oh.
- 39:46SPEAKER_05: Okay, big flop.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: In like prime Will Ferrell time.
- 39:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 39:50SPEAKER_05: This might have been what started the decline, honestly.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: Wow, that's really surprising.
- 39:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 39:55SPEAKER_02: I'm s yeah, I'm honestly like, that's crazy how much this made then.
- 39:59SPEAKER_05: Well, no wonder they were like, we gotta do a new space jam.
- 40:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 40:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 40:02SPEAKER_02: But I'm surprised that they didn't well, I know that they dropped the idea of doing a sequel because Michael Jordan wasn't interested.
- 40:09SPEAKER_02: But like, they could have done other ones.
- 40:11SPEAKER_02: They could have done they could have found someone else at the time.
- 40:14SPEAKER_05: And that's I also don't think you want to double dip on the Michael.
- 40:17SPEAKER_05: It's like the the appeal of the first one is just like how cool it is to have Michael Jordan.
- 40:22SPEAKER_05: You can't be like, and now we're gonna do a franchise of Michael Jordan Bugs Bunny movies.
- 40:25SPEAKER_02: You're like, yeah, but I can also like if they'd made that today, and it uh they would have done that entirely.
- 40:29SPEAKER_02: That's exactly what it would have been as a franchise of Michael Jordan.
- 40:32SPEAKER_05: It would have been like LeBron, you're gonna do 10 of these.
- 40:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 40:34SPEAKER_05: Uh and it would have been like he's not happy about having to take time off of his seasons to do this.
- 40:38SPEAKER_05: We're not happy to watch them.
- 40:39SPEAKER_05: Like, it's just not the same thing.
- 40:41SPEAKER_05: It also really phoning it in.
- 40:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, clearly phoning it in.
- 40:45SPEAKER_05: Uh, and it's also just like no one has that sort of cultural cachet right now where it's like we wanna see it's like LeBron is the thing is I think LeBron is a funny performer at times.
- 40:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, uh, he he's really good in train rack.
- 40:58SPEAKER_02: He's great in train rap, and I think that's what got him I'm sure like the space shot, but he's not playing that same kind of guy.
- 41:04SPEAKER_05: Like it's just yeah, and they they don't have enough confidence to to take it away from the Looney Tunes at times.
- 41:10SPEAKER_05: They I think they literally have rap and granny at one point.
- 41:12SPEAKER_05: I'm like, what are you doing?
- 41:13SPEAKER_05: That's that's a shorthand for something you don't do in a movie like this.
- 41:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 41:17SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah.
- 41:19SPEAKER_02: Oh god.
- 41:20SPEAKER_02: I've I've forgotten how bad that movie is.
- 41:22SPEAKER_05: I can't now it's funny.
- 41:23SPEAKER_05: Now that I'm uh uh talking about it, I'm like, it's all I can think about.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: Um and then they have like LeBron's fake child and like Yeah.
- 41:32SPEAKER_05: Which you gotta you gotta have a kid so that with the the audience roots for him, yeah.
- 41:36SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 41:37SPEAKER_02: They like at least in this, they they had the children, but they weren't like the the main.
- 41:41SPEAKER_05: No, they're in the sideline, they just kind of show up to support.
- 41:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 41:44SPEAKER_05: Uh which, you know, LeBron's child being like a weird, long part of the plot, which is sort of like, I don't know this child, I don't care.
- 41:52SPEAKER_05: I don't care.
- 41:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:53SPEAKER_02: Just get me to the loony series.
- 41:54SPEAKER_05: But I really do think that uh when execs produce these movies, they go, children need to see themselves in it so they can connect with someone.
- 42:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 42:03SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, I don't think that's entirely true.
- 42:06SPEAKER_05: I don't think that's true.
- 42:06SPEAKER_05: No, I think a lot of and it's also they're thinking about really young kids.
- 42:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 42:10SPEAKER_05: Uh, but I'm just like, I don't think that's entirely true.
- 42:13SPEAKER_05: And I think that you gotta give kids the credit to just first of all, you don't need the Looney Tunes and a child.
- 42:18SPEAKER_05: They'll either be like, I want to see Bugs Bunny or I want to see myself.
- 42:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:22SPEAKER_05: It's fine to have one.
- 42:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:24SPEAKER_02: Um I um I actually really disagree.
- 42:26SPEAKER_02: Like, like you said, I disagree with that.
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: But like I my partner's got a six-year-old, and she the the the movie she's obsessed with, K-pop demon hunters.
- 42:35SPEAKER_02: That's not there's where are the kids in that?
- 42:36SPEAKER_02: There's no, yeah, and that she's the most like she really connects with that more than anything.
- 42:41SPEAKER_05: You get colorful animation, you get good songs, that's all you have to do.
- 42:46SPEAKER_05: And I think it's it's fascinating that a lot of times studios are just like, we just don't know how to crack this.
- 42:51SPEAKER_05: And it's like, you do, you just you're putting too much extra stuff in there.
- 42:54SPEAKER_05: You can make a crowd pleaser.
- 42:56SPEAKER_05: Um, Space Jam is a crowd pleaser.
- 42:58SPEAKER_05: It is a crowd pleaser.
- 42:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and like also, I will say it's not Roger Rabbit with how good the like live action animation stuff is, but there are some moments in this that I still am just like, I want to understand how they did that.
- 43:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 43:09SPEAKER_05: There's a s the scene, and I'm sure it's just puppetry, but like the scene where Bugs and Daffy have to sneak into Michael's house.
- 43:16SPEAKER_05: Oh, that's so well done.
- 43:17SPEAKER_05: So well done.
- 43:18SPEAKER_05: When they're just like doing the tunnel under the the the turf outside, I was just like, is it just they laid down extra turf and like have a thing running under it or why?
- 43:27SPEAKER_05: Boy, sure.
- 43:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it just it looks so good.
- 43:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I was very like uh I wanted to see more of that just sort of like practical Yeah, it's practical mixed in with uh animation.
- 43:37SPEAKER_02: And I I I I love any time they do that with with in movies.
- 43:40SPEAKER_02: And like one of the things I wanted to ask you about, well not ask you about, I want to say about this is the ru the other rumour about this is that Joe Pitka did not direct most of this movie.
- 43:50SPEAKER_02: Who did?
- 43:51SPEAKER_02: Ivan Reitman.
- 43:52SPEAKER_05: Oh uh I do believe that.
- 43:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I can see it.
- 43:56SPEAKER_05: Actually, I can I say this?
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: I can cut it.
- 44:01SPEAKER_05: I'll I'll just say that uh I I I vaguely remember getting confirmation on that from someone else who would know firsthand.
- 44:09SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 44:09SPEAKER_05: So you can keep that in.
- 44:10SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 44:11SPEAKER_05: That won't that won't.
- 44:12SPEAKER_05: I'm just like, I don't know if I can anyway, but yeah.
- 44:15SPEAKER_05: Interesting.
- 44:15SPEAKER_05: I'll talk to you after this.
- 44:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: That's very interesting.
- 44:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:20SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, so what I've heard what I'd heard is that like um Joe Pickett did like a lot of the animation stuff, but not the live action.
- 44:30SPEAKER_05: Which makes sense.
- 44:31SPEAKER_05: I can see that.
- 44:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 44:32SPEAKER_02: Because it feels very Ivan Reitman as well.
- 44:34SPEAKER_05: It feels like two separate things, and like the animation stuff is so important and is enough to be like this guy is at least a co-director on the movie.
- 44:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 44:41SPEAKER_05: But it does not feel like the performance.
- 44:43SPEAKER_05: And maybe that's why you get the kind of performance you do out of both Michael Jordan and like the side characters, but yeah, I I could fully see that.
- 44:51SPEAKER_02: But also like the reason he got this job was because he directed the commercial.
- 44:56SPEAKER_02: Oh yes.
- 44:57SPEAKER_02: Uh with the action, which is what started this whole thing off in the first place.
- 45:00SPEAKER_02: It's like there was a commercial of Michael Jordan and Sparkani.
- 45:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 45:05SPEAKER_02: And yeah, it really took off, and then suddenly You know what's funny?
- 45:08SPEAKER_05: I feel like it's always basketball where a commercial turns into a movie.
- 45:11SPEAKER_05: Like with the the Uncle Drew thing that uh Oh yeah.
- 45:15SPEAKER_02: God, who was that?
- 45:16SPEAKER_02: But that it was um uh Lil Rail.
- 45:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but who was the who played Uncle Drew?
- 45:21SPEAKER_05: It's not Kevin Durant.
- 45:23SPEAKER_05: It's uh Oh see, this is where Uncle Drew.
- 45:27SPEAKER_02: Kyrie Irving.
- 45:29SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 45:29SPEAKER_05: See crazy! What a time! Weird.
- 45:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they would never do that with Kyrie now.
- 45:35SPEAKER_05: Um, but also just the idea that they're like, hey, you're gonna take your offseason, you're gonna be in prosthetics every day for a while.
- 45:41SPEAKER_05: 46 million on a 19 budget.
- 45:43SPEAKER_05: That ain't bad.
- 45:44SPEAKER_05: Also a 19, then being like, we're not spending as much of space, Jim.
- 45:47SPEAKER_02: No, because also like the the other thing is I feel like they looked at that and they're like, this is not gonna do well outside of America.
- 45:53SPEAKER_05: No, not at all.
- 45:54SPEAKER_05: Uh even though they did the the uh bad grandpa thing of being like prosthetics and like not stunts, but like making a guy look silly.
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:02SPEAKER_05: Uh but it's like it's not Michael Jordan.
- 46:04SPEAKER_05: There are no uh Looney tunes, so you can't spend as much money.
- 46:07SPEAKER_05: And you can tell, I'm re I'm remembering now, it's like most of the movie is like outdoor uh courts.
- 46:12SPEAKER_05: Oh no.
- 46:13SPEAKER_05: So it is like them being like, we we cannot shut down a basketball court to shoot in there.
- 46:17SPEAKER_02: Oh uh that's that's that's when you know that's why it costs 19 million like only a few years ago.
- 46:23SPEAKER_05: I guess that's not the they also Ted Lasso was uh a sport thing also of them taking commercial and turning it into a show.
- 46:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 46:30SPEAKER_05: I guess they do that a lot with sports, where it's like people like this thing, why don't you just make it longer?
- 46:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 46:35SPEAKER_02: Uh well Ted Lasso is an interesting one as well because like I don't know, it's it's it's uh the Americanization of a British sport.
- 46:45SPEAKER_02: That's like but then it's also now it's broad appeal worldwide.
- 46:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 46:49SPEAKER_02: And yeah, I just saw like how much they make an episode now, and it's crazy money.
- 46:54SPEAKER_02: It's crazy, crazy money.
- 46:56SPEAKER_05: It makes sense that it's crazy money because it's like, well, they canceled the show and then brought it back.
- 46:59SPEAKER_02: So everyone's like, if you're just canceled, they just they just brought it to an end and then they Oh, they did they brought it to an end and then brought it back?
- 47:06SPEAKER_02: And now and then then this and then Apple said to them, please bring it back.
- 47:10SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 47:10SPEAKER_02: It was like it had a natural conclusion.
- 47:12SPEAKER_05: I guess then it's also the it would make sense that they're like, no, you're paying us so much now.
- 47:16SPEAKER_05: Uh now that you can just be like, I don't, I'm not on a contract.
- 47:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so they could done like absolutely insane money now.
- 47:22SPEAKER_05: Well, also Apple has the money to burn.
- 47:24SPEAKER_05: Like when they do TV stuff, it's funny.
- 47:26SPEAKER_05: It just feels like they're like, this isn't our moneymaker, who cares?
- 47:29SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, that's beautiful, and I I want every company to have that.
- 47:34SPEAKER_02: It's funny as well because it's like Brett Goldstein did not need to come back.
- 47:37SPEAKER_02: No, I'm sure it didn't want to.
- 47:39SPEAKER_05: Um yeah, I would imagine he didn't want to.
- 47:42SPEAKER_05: Uh but yeah, I don't know why why that's such a strong pipeline of like, look at the way that this commercial worked, let's make it a feature.
- 47:50SPEAKER_05: Only in sports.
- 47:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 47:51SPEAKER_02: It was also like, do you do you remember the commercials when they the Telasso ones?
- 47:55SPEAKER_02: I remember I I have like a vague memory because he was like, I don't even know if they named him in them, but like he was he was just this like coach that was brought in from America to coach um Tottenham.
- 48:06SPEAKER_02: And it was for like to promote NBC sports.
- 48:09SPEAKER_05: I was about to say, I was like, what what was it promoted?
- 48:11SPEAKER_02: NBC Sport or something like that for when when they were like showing the Premier League.
- 48:16SPEAKER_02: It was really just odd.
- 48:18SPEAKER_05: I feel like a lot of companies now probably want that kind of thing where it's like we got we got the celebrity for a commercial, and if it goes, well, maybe it'll backdoor into it.
- 48:27SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, it really doesn't work like that.
- 48:30SPEAKER_05: No, no, no.
- 48:31SPEAKER_05: And they got very lucky these few times.
- 48:33SPEAKER_05: But I think with sports, it is I I wonder if the appeal with sports is that there's a natural plot line for them to follow, and it doesn't have to be an advertisement for it's like you can't have it be like, whoa, everyone really loved the this ad for what I can't even think of product for the iPhone.
- 48:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we're not gonna be like, let's make an iPhone ad movie, you know.
- 48:54SPEAKER_05: It's like there's a natural competition aspect to any sport that it's just like you got a good idea, just make it uh make it a competitive feature.
- 49:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 49:02SPEAKER_02: I don't know, but they there was there was a period of time where they were like, any IP, let's turn it into a movie though.
- 49:09SPEAKER_02: But so like I don't know about like how I don't know.
- 49:13SPEAKER_02: They sometimes they do it well with like Lego, Barbie, other times it's you know, emoji.
- 49:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and it is a strong, it's like there's no middle ground of it's like it was fine.
- 49:23SPEAKER_05: It's really like it's either really good or it doesn't work.
- 49:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 49:26SPEAKER_05: Uh and I think that's why we get so many of them because they're just like this one will be really good.
- 49:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 49:30SPEAKER_05: You guys don't really understand what works when it works is like a strong voice, and like the idea that these aren't movies about selling whatever product as much as they are just being like, we want to use the thing to just make a movie, and people will like it, and then go like, hey, I like the that name now.
- 49:46SPEAKER_05: I like Lego now because the movie was really good.
- 49:49SPEAKER_02: How many times do you think you've seen it?
- 49:50SPEAKER_02: Like this that wasn't a question I was gonna ask about.
- 49:52SPEAKER_05: I must be like probably less than I would think, but also probably like ten plus.
- 50:01SPEAKER_05: Like as a kid alone, I I I feel like it's a movie that I saw so many times.
- 50:05SPEAKER_05: But also, when you're a kid, you can watch the movie over and over, and then when you're adult, you don't remember that.
- 50:08SPEAKER_02: This is the thing, yeah.
- 50:09SPEAKER_02: This is what I I keep finding that people are coming on.
- 50:12SPEAKER_02: Well, when people talk about the kids' movies that they that they love, yeah.
- 50:15SPEAKER_02: Like um, I had someone talking about Jumanji, and he was he was like, I saw it so many times as a kid, and then like once maybe once as an adult.
- 50:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 50:22SPEAKER_05: It it's hard to look back at something like that and really enjoy it the same, because also when you're re-watching it, you are just kind of feeling what you felt again.
- 50:30SPEAKER_05: And it's like not even the same.
- 50:32SPEAKER_05: Sometimes it's like I've forgotten all of this, and then you're just sort of having memories of like, oh yeah.
- 50:36SPEAKER_05: And it's like remembering isn't enjoying.
- 50:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 50:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 50:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 50:40SPEAKER_02: That's the there's that I think that is that weird thing, you know, of like again, this is like the Ready Player One sort of thing, but it's like the nostalgia.
- 50:47SPEAKER_02: Are you enjoying it, or is it just like you're just remembering?
- 50:49SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 50:50SPEAKER_02: You're just going, oh, okay, this is this is something that I remember from when I was a child.
- 50:54SPEAKER_02: And this is like now it's being shoehorned in to Yeah.
- 50:58SPEAKER_05: With Ready Player One, also it's just sort of like it's it's just going like, I recognize that's what I mean.
- 51:03SPEAKER_05: It's not uh, it doesn't bring me, it's not as fun as being like, I'm not like the DeLorean, what the I'm just sort of like, yeah, I get that's the car from the other thing.
- 51:13SPEAKER_05: I don't care.
- 51:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 51:14SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 51:14SPEAKER_05: It's it it's fascinating.
- 51:16SPEAKER_05: I understand that it's also like that's just a different way that we think that other people do.
- 51:18SPEAKER_05: Cause I do think some people see it and go, it's actually that's really cool.
- 51:21SPEAKER_05: I love that oh my god, they got the iron giant.
- 51:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 51:25SPEAKER_02: I remember this.
- 51:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's that means it's good.
- 51:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 51:28SPEAKER_05: Just like, holy shit, they got all of this.
- 51:30SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, the I They own it.
- 51:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but I'm also like, I guess the contracts are more interesting than just seeing it, because I'm like, I don't care that the Iron Giant's running with Batman, whatever.
- 51:41SPEAKER_05: It also just like it's that's kind of what the appeal of uh I don't want to shit talk ready player one, not just because I'm I also just feel like for me, I'm like that's a movie that's like not for me, I don't hate it or anything though.
- 51:53SPEAKER_05: But I think the appeal of something like Ready Player One is the same as the appeal of like AI for a lot of people, where it's sort of like, holy shit, I put I made it so that Spider-Man is fighting Superman, and now I can see what that's like.
- 52:05SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, it it's not that interesting.
- 52:08SPEAKER_05: It's also just like it's fine to just imagine that and be like, okay.
- 52:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:11SPEAKER_02: Oh, that that that's so funny because I remember those all those videos, those AI videos coming out like six months ago or something like that.
- 52:17SPEAKER_02: Like people were just making those together and just combining things, and it's just like this, it's not interesting.
- 52:22SPEAKER_05: You're really in you're really intrigued by that.
- 52:24SPEAKER_05: You you really to you the the interest in AI in so many things is just a lack of imagination and the ability to visualize something without story, without anything other than just to be like, whoa, I see it now.
- 52:37SPEAKER_05: I'm like, yeah, who cares?
- 52:40SPEAKER_05: That's never been the point.
- 52:42SPEAKER_05: Like, I it also makes me just go like, oh, every time that I've been like, who wants this with a movie or something?
- 52:47SPEAKER_05: I'm like, oh, I guess it's you.
- 52:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you are the reason that they do.
- 52:51SPEAKER_05: They're just like, what if we made a Morbius movie?
- 52:53SPEAKER_05: Because you just can't imagine a thing and it's not enough, it's enough for it to not be good.
- 52:58SPEAKER_05: It's enough to just be like, I see it.
- 52:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 53:00SPEAKER_02: Anyway, movies are silly, AI is silly.
- 53:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 53:04SPEAKER_02: But uh, okay, so back to Space Jam.
- 53:06SPEAKER_02: Like, what's um do you when you went to see when you went to that screening, that 90th anniversary one, like what dude can you tell me more about that then?
- 53:16SPEAKER_05: Like what was like Yeah, they just it was a weird thing where they so they took over the lot, they dressed it up, um, they had people in like bugs and uh Lola outfits and like uh big costumes.
- 53:28SPEAKER_05: Uh and then they just invited us to it's funny.
- 53:32SPEAKER_05: I I've been on the Warner Brothers lot a few times uh for a few screenings.
- 53:35SPEAKER_05: I went to see one battle after another in Vist Division there because there's only like two Vist Division screens in LA, and I was very lucky to see that.
- 53:42SPEAKER_05: And then I went back for Space Jam.
- 53:44SPEAKER_05: So I was like, what a what two wildly different things to see in a very ornate like presentation.
- 53:49SPEAKER_05: Like this is the theater where it's like if they need an award screening or to sort of like woo Academy members or whatever, they'll do it there.
- 53:56SPEAKER_05: So we um but it was just like a very overwhelming.
- 53:58SPEAKER_05: It's also like we got there and I was like, oh, of course this is an influencer event.
- 54:02SPEAKER_05: And it's like a lot of people really dressed up and taking photos, and I was like, that's fun.
- 54:07SPEAKER_05: I don't I thought I was just coming to watch a movie, but I'm realizing now that this is like a big, big deal.
- 54:12SPEAKER_05: Um you get invited to a lot of those, and then like realize that they're influencer ones.
- 54:17SPEAKER_05: I not as many influencer events.
- 54:19SPEAKER_05: I feel like I get invited to a lot of screenings where it's just sort of like they're having a QA and I'm on some list where they're just like, invite him and he'll write about it on letterboxed if he likes it, or or just like invite him because he knows the people involved or whatever.
- 54:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 54:32SPEAKER_05: Uh, but this is the first one in a while where I was just sort of like, oh, this is so people post about it.
- 54:37SPEAKER_05: This is how people take photos.
- 54:38SPEAKER_05: Oh, 100%.
- 54:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 54:40SPEAKER_05: Um, which was fine.
- 54:42SPEAKER_05: I just felt very like uh, oh, I don't care that much about it in this.
- 54:45SPEAKER_02: Um I noticed I weirdly noticed that like with disclosure day actually, they they they invited so many influencers to the premiere to like it's a it's a big part of marketing now.
- 54:54SPEAKER_05: They want to make sure that everyone's posting about it.
- 54:57SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, that's that makes sense.
- 54:59SPEAKER_05: I do feel a little in my head, I'm like, again, this is a thing where it's like it's just outside of our world where I'm like, if I saw an influencer post about a movie, I wouldn't be like, okay.
- 55:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:08SPEAKER_05: But also it's like we watch movies enough that we don't need that.
- 55:10SPEAKER_05: It's for the people who are like, I only followed these influencers.
- 55:13SPEAKER_05: Oh, they say this movie was good.
- 55:14SPEAKER_05: I didn't hear about it.
- 55:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:16SPEAKER_02: Strange.
- 55:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:17SPEAKER_02: It's it's just not a world that I can I understand at all.
- 55:21SPEAKER_02: Me neither.
- 55:22SPEAKER_02: But yeah, it's like I I 100% would have gone to that Space Jam one, though.
- 55:26SPEAKER_02: I would have said, yeah.
- 55:27SPEAKER_05: I I'm glad I went, and I am glad I went with a friend, because otherwise I would have just been like, okay.
- 55:31SPEAKER_05: They did have a lot of cool like memorabilia from the production.
- 55:36SPEAKER_05: That's cool.
- 55:36SPEAKER_05: Uh like they had even just like things like marketing from uh the era that it was uh coming out, where it's like uh Michael Jordan dolls or like the first like big banner of them promoting the movie, saying like coming 1996 or oh that's cool.
- 55:51SPEAKER_05: That was cool to see, and like sort of like early animation storyboards and cells.
- 55:55SPEAKER_05: So I'm glad I got to see that.
- 55:56SPEAKER_05: But it felt like they sort of like put that inside on the way into the movie, just being like, come have all this fun, take photos.
- 56:01SPEAKER_05: And it's like also this stuff.
- 56:02SPEAKER_05: I'm like, this is the interesting stuff.
- 56:03SPEAKER_05: This is the museum of uh Michael Jordan right here.
- 56:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like put that everyone, yeah.
- 56:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 56:10SPEAKER_02: Oh, I I would have loved that.
- 56:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I love I used to uh love weirdly.
- 56:15SPEAKER_02: You used to love the like Planet Hollywood stuff where they had all the all the memorabilities.
- 56:18SPEAKER_05: No, it's great.
- 56:18SPEAKER_05: I still love it.
- 56:19SPEAKER_05: Uh in LA, they have the Academy Museum and they have so many little exhibits where it's just stuff like that, and they switch out like costumes all the time, and it's just so fun getting to see that kind of stuff.
- 56:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 56:29SPEAKER_02: That's that's such a fun aspect of the movies as well.
- 56:32SPEAKER_02: Like, I love I love all the behind-the-scenes stuff.
- 56:34SPEAKER_02: And yeah, I feel like that that's another thing that we miss we're missing a lot now, is like all the behind the scenes of of these movies, because we we don't have well, we do have Blu-ray and everything, but they're not really like they're not putting they don't put the effort in anymore.
- 56:46SPEAKER_05: It's really a thing where like if they're putting the effort in, it's like something they had to push for.
- 56:51SPEAKER_05: It's like an independent film where they just or as a criterion, maybe like and but I I I really respect when a filmmaker insists on that being a thing, because I do think so much of people's film knowledge and understanding of how to make movies was from watching behind the scenes.
- 57:03SPEAKER_05: I was like, I want I want more of that.
- 57:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 57:05SPEAKER_05: I feel like if I made a movie, I'd and I would be like, I want to break down everything.
- 57:08SPEAKER_05: I want to be like, here's a version of the movie without the effects done, so you can see like that would that would that'd be great.
- 57:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 57:14SPEAKER_02: I saw um I saw Obsession the last week and Curry Baker, and then all the all the videos I'm getting now are like Curry Baker breaking everything down and like showing behind the scenes and everything.
- 57:23SPEAKER_05: And I I think uh young filmmakers should be doing it's like where did they learn to make films?
- 57:27SPEAKER_05: On YouTube.
- 57:28SPEAKER_05: Might as well like spread the wealth.
- 57:29SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 57:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 57:30SPEAKER_02: He he kind of gets like what people are looking for, and like yeah.
- 57:33SPEAKER_02: That's exactly how it should be done.
- 57:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 57:35SPEAKER_02: Um okay.
- 57:36SPEAKER_02: Do you have anything else about that you can remember about Space Jam that you like that we haven't talked about really, like other than what we have gone into?
- 57:44SPEAKER_02: Is there anything anything to do with you that that we haven't talked about in Space Jam?
- 57:47SPEAKER_05: I don't think so.
- 57:48SPEAKER_05: Uh what other thing?
- 57:51SPEAKER_05: Uh oh my gosh.
- 57:52SPEAKER_05: Okay, here's a an insane thing.
- 57:54SPEAKER_05: I'm on the Wikipedia for Space Jam and New Legacy because of a letterbox review that I wrote in which I uh talk about, and I can say that this for it I it's a lie.
- 58:07SPEAKER_05: It was a it was a joke that I wrote in my letterbox review saying that I got asked to do punch up for Space Jam and New Legacy, and I just kept trying to get uh references to the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants in there, because it's a Warner Brothers piece of IP, and it made Malcolm D.
- 58:20SPEAKER_05: Lee, the director of Space Jamie Legacy, yell at me.
- 58:23SPEAKER_05: And uh it's like you read the thing and it's like this is probably a joke, but I can't tell.
- 58:27SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, it's kind of clearly a joke.
- 58:28SPEAKER_02: That's that's very obviously a joke.
- 58:30SPEAKER_05: The way I wrote it, I think it was because it starts as me saying I did punch up for a thing, and it's like, well, I have before, so maybe it's telling the truth.
- 58:36SPEAKER_05: But it's like when you get to like I kept doing it and he yelled at me and then apologized by putting the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants girls in the movie.
- 58:43SPEAKER_05: I'm like, you're insane to not think this is a joke.
- 58:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but like I that was a letterbox review that I made.
- 58:48SPEAKER_05: Also, I was talking to uh someone from actually I know a new basketball movie that's might be uh I was talking to someone from Sony for a while and they saw that review and they were like, is this real?
- 59:00SPEAKER_05: And I was like, I forgot that people can see this.
- 59:02SPEAKER_05: Uh that like executives can see this.
- 59:04SPEAKER_05: And I was like, I had to be like, it's not real.
- 59:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 59:06SPEAKER_05: Um GOAT, the the Steph Curry movie.
- 59:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 59:09SPEAKER_05: Must I mean I must be now.
- 59:11SPEAKER_05: I'm like, that movie was shockingly big.
- 59:14SPEAKER_02: That was a yeah, that was a big movie.
- 59:16SPEAKER_02: I think theatrical release, so 194.
- 59:18SPEAKER_02: It's close, 194.
- 59:19SPEAKER_05: Really?
- 59:20SPEAKER_02: 194.
- 59:21SPEAKER_02: Goat hasn't beat Space Jam?
- 59:23SPEAKER_05: No.
- 59:24SPEAKER_05: Not even unadjusted for inflation.
- 59:26SPEAKER_05: Holy shit.
- 59:27SPEAKER_05: That's actually very shocking to me.
- 59:29SPEAKER_05: Because I thought that movie was massive.
- 59:30SPEAKER_05: I thought it was massive as well.
- 59:31SPEAKER_02: I I I was actually going onto it expecting it to have cleared that, but no, it's it's not.
- 59:35SPEAKER_02: It didn't clear that.
- 59:36SPEAKER_02: Where's the budget?
- 59:37SPEAKER_02: It doesn't say.
- 59:39SPEAKER_02: It doesn't say a budget.
- 59:40SPEAKER_05: It also is probably like that's probably not too much more than it's oh god.
- 59:44SPEAKER_05: I mean, it might have been like a hundred million, but it's just like, damn.
- 59:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 59:47SPEAKER_02: It's what the one nine, yeah.
- 59:49SPEAKER_05: I reckon it did not do that well.
- 59:51SPEAKER_05: Uh budget of what budget wise.
- 59:53SPEAKER_05: I guess I'm also like, I didn't hear about it for a while after that, but I was just like, well, it's a kids' movie.
- 59:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 59:58SPEAKER_05: That's so fascinating to me.
- 59:59SPEAKER_05: That is fascinating.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you're right.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_05: Sorry, Sony.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_02: God.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_02: And it was also Steph Curry as well.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_02: Did you see it?
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_02: I didn't.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_05: No, I was like, I I get it.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_05: If I had like kids or like nieces or nephews, I'd be like, yeah, I'll watch Goat with them, but I I don't.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_02: I think I yeah, I think uh my partner, six-year-old, tried to watch it and she just wasn't interested.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_02: It doesn't have as much of an appeal as something like K-pop demon hunters.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_02: Which is yeah, fascinating.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_02: She also didn't like sheep detectives.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_05: Oh, really?
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, which I was like, oh, she's gonna love this.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_05: I still haven't seen it, but I everyone I've known who saw it loved it so much.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_05: I'm like, I should just go before a show one day this week.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_02: I'm sure it's I'm sure it's actually decent, but it's just like, you know, six-year-old.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_02: It's not it's not really her.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_02: No.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_05: She's not the everyone I know is like a grown adult being like, it made me cry.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, yeah, I don't think it's for six-year-olds then.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_02: Also it seems a bit dark for her.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, okay, so that's that's us with Space Jam.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_02: I want to talk to you now about actually, you know what?
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_02: I want to try this.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_02: I've not tried this, but I want to try this.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_02: If you're uh alright, I want to try this game with you.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_02: Like to see.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_02: Uh it's a game that I saw on on TikTok, I want to credit them.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_02: It's uh this TikTok channel, Watch with Apollo.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_02: And they do a thing where it's movie 501, and so it's Rotten Tomatoes um scores, and it's like a darts thing.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_02: So you're trying to get from 501 to zero as quickly as possible.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_02: And so if I give you if I say to you like a category, and then you kind of like try and work out, try and get to the bottom as quickly as possible.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, where it's like if I say a movie, it's like then you take that rotten tomoda score with it.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_02: If you can do it as quickly as possible.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_05: Okay, let's see.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_02: Um, all right.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_02: So I guess like, I guess with this then I can give you, I guess, sports movies.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_05: Shit.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_05: Oh, and you know, no, no, no, no, I'm just mean uh because I was like, if you go animation, I know how to do this, but sports movies looks fun.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_02: Animation feels very easy.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it does.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_05: That's a that's why I was like, here we go.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_02: And I and because you're such a like movie buff.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_02: I was like, I don't want to give you animation.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_05: No, that's yeah, I'd be like, Toy Story 1, Toy Story Two, Toy Story Three, Toy Story Four, and then a shitty animation movie.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_05: Um, okay, let's see.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_05: So sports movies.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_05: What what is like one of the most beloved sports?
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_03: I'm trying to think.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_03: Uh okay, remember the Titans.
- 1:02:26unknown: Okay.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_05: I know it's not gonna be that, but still.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_05: I gotta clear some some shaff away.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_02: That is 72.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_05: Uh loving basketball.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_05: 86.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_05: 72 plus 86 is 160.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_05: 158.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_05: Okay, 158.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_05: 158.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_05: Uh, okay, uh, fuck it.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_05: Hoop dreams.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_02: Oh, great one.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_02: That's gonna be like 100.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna say 95.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_02: 98, yeah.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_05: Um, sorry, so 158 plus 256?
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_05: There's gotta I'm like there's ones that I'm embarrassed to be missing right now.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_05: Um sports movies.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_05: Uh any given Sunday.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_02: That is.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_02: What?
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_02: 51.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_02: I thought that was a well received.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_05: Me too.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_05: 307.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_05: 307?
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_05: Itanya.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_05: Gotta get it in there.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_02: That is.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_02: Uh 397.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_02: 397?
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_03: Um Coach Carter.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_03: Damn.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm I'm already got too many in there.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_03: 63.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_03: 63 shit.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_02: Four sixty.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_02: So you need uh forty-one.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_05: Challengers.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_02: Challengers, that's the same.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_02: Wait, I need 41?
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_05: Oh god, okay.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_05: Uh shit.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_05: Airbuds.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_05: No, it's gonna be too high.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_05: Uh wait, wait, wait.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_03: Uh fever pitch.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_03: Oh, good.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_02: Which one?
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_02: The Jimmy Fallon one.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_02: Jimmy Fallon, yeah, I was gonna say.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_02: 66.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_05: I thought you had it.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_05: I also I was like, I honestly was like, oh, that might be too high.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_05: Um I should have done like Major League or something.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, you can still keep going, like you can keep going.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_02: Didn't I bust?
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_02: You bust, but you I'll give you like I'll give you one more.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_05: Instead of that?
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_05: Alright, let me do Major League Two.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_02: Major League Two.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_02: Five.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_02: Five?
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_02: What's Major League One?
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_02: These baseball movies, I'm I'm not gonna know the 83.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I knew that was a huge discount.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_03: Insane.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_03: Um Airbud seventh inning fetch.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_05: That's how you what what is that?
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_05: Seventh just you can use just seventh inning fetch.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_02: It might be a direct to DVD.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_02: There's no reviews.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_05: Well, uh then just Airbud.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_05: The Airbuds gonna be too high.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_05: Airbuds good.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_05: 50.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_02: Oh, fuck.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_02: Uh where are you at now?
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_02: You're at 465.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_05: 465.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_05: What do I need?
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_02: 36.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna do it.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_05: It's hard to think of like a sports movie where it's like, yeah, we all think that one really sucks.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_02: I can think of one that really sucks.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be too high, I think.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_02: You think it's gonna be higher than 36?
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_02: I think so.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_05: Also, I think I like the bench warmers.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_02: I I don't mind it, it's just like I I 13.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_05: Whoa, damn, okay.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_05: I was wrong.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_05: Um my god, uh United Passions.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_02: What is that?
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_05: It's that fucking uh set bladder movie that they made.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_05: That's like just propaganda.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_02: Oh, Gerald Def Audu.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it might be zero.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_05: It's zero.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_05: Um I don't oh my god, this is so hard.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_03: It's hard, yeah.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_02: Bad sports movies.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_02: I mean a lot of sports movies aren't reviewed that well.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_02: Semi-pro.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_02: Twenty-three.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_05: So I need uh twenty twenty-three.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_03: I need another twenty-three.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, okay.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_03: Thirteen.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_02: Also lovely.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_05: I know it's not.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_02: It's not.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_03: What are some of the worst sports movies?
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_02: Oh okay.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_02: I see one.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_03: You do?
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_02: I see one.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_02: I don't know if you can see it.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_05: Balls Up?
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_05: Did that get reviewed well?
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_05: I don't think it did.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_05: I think it might oh, I am I thinking of Balls Out?
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_05: There's a movie that was called Intramural that was changed to the either Balls Up or Balls Out.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_05: Um Yeah, it's actually good, is why I'm like, that's not is I had a bunch of friends who worked on it.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_05: Including Nick and Brian.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_05: 23.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_05: 23?
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_05: Unjust.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_05: Um I need a 13.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_05: I'm not gonna get in exactly a 13, but let's do balls up.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_05: Oh, that is it?
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_05: Oh, then that's not the right movie.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_05: Try Balls Out.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_05: That's just the other movie.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_02: Jake Lacey.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_02: 87.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, see that's that's right.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_02: That's the one you were talking about.
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_05: That's that's no, that's the movie that my friends made.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, I see Nick on the Balls Up is the Mart Wahlberg one.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_02: It just came out.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_05: I missed me.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_05: Um what is that ping pong?
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_05: Not Marty Supreme.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_05: It's like uh Oh yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_05: Is it Balls of Fury?
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_02: That could that could do it.
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_03: Come on, Balls of Fury Fury.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_03: That could do it.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_03: 22.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_03: Oh too good.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_05: Damn.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_05: Can you look up worst sports movies?
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_05: Because I'm just curious.
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_05: I'm like, what else could it could be?
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_05: And also I just see so many things there that I'm like, that's good though.
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_05: Uh isn't it like about a hockey player technically?
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_05: The Love Guru's got like eight.
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_02: You wanna go with that one?
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_02: Then we'll just need even lower.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_02: Oh, is that gonna make it too hot?
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_05: No, no.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_05: I love the challenge.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_05: 13.
- 1:08:52unknown: Oh!
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_05: Oh my god.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_02: Christ.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_02: That uh that that took a lot longer than I thought was gonna take.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_05: It's like I think someone in who's a hockey player in it.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_05: Anyway.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_02: I don't think I've seen it since it came out.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_02: I don't I have no memory of it.
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_05: There's other things like that's that's uh your brain being kind.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_02: Three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_02: Nine.
- 1:09:22SPEAKER_02: Rough.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_02: But hey, you're you're the first candidate to do this.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_05: Let's see if you can beat nine.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_02: Nine.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_02: And also you're the movie buff.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_02: Like you're a movie buff.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_02: Like you will you'll inevitably do better than a lot of people I feel like.
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_05: It's also I think the fun thing about that though is discovering a movie is lower or higher than you thought.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_02: That I find that a lot on this on this podcast as well.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_02: It's like when I when I go to like pull the list of like movies that are low-rated and everything, like I didn't I had no idea Jumanji was low-rated.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_02: You would not expect that.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_05: I wouldn't know.
- 1:09:53SPEAKER_05: Uh it's also because like the new ones I think are pretty highly rated.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they are.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_05: So it's funny to be like, these are better culturally.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_02: This is what it's but then like you look at the reviews and it's like people still liked the re people liked it in the reviews.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_02: It's just the thing that doesn't make sense with Rotten Tomatoes.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_02: But um Okay, so let's let's move on to the final segment then, which is um you we talked about this before, but you um a movie that is well reviewed and well loved that you actually think is a bad movie.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_05: I uh the first there was one that immediately came to mind, and then I was like, ooh, wait, can I do one that's more of a hot take?
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_05: And I actually don't want to do the hot take one because I know people will yell at me and I don't know.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, that's fair enough.
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_05: Uh but the one that I uh am gonna pick, which I stand by because I gave it a second shot and was like, nope, not for me.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_05: Uh oh, wait, no, I have a new mmm.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_05: Now I'm like, dude.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_02: Oh I so intrigued.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_05: Do I fan the flames or do I just go, people be like, oh, sure.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_05: You you decide.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_05: Fan the flames.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_05: Wicked isn't good.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_05: Wicked is a bad movie.
- 1:10:57SPEAKER_05: Like, I'm so I I uh it's uh and I hate I don't uh oh no other I immediately regret this actually no no stick with it because I agree with you.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_05: I agree.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_05: The thing uh and I just I don't I'm not a and I say a bad movie like it's an objective thing.
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_05: I really don't like Wicked.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_05: I think both Ariana and Cynthia Revo are giving great performances in that movie.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_05: Uh it's really the direction.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_05: I just am like, I don't like a musical that's shot this way.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_05: I don't like a musical where the big dance numbers are just a camera uh running over a crowd doing all the same.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_05: It just feels like it's very unspecific.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_05: I think that John Chu is a is a is a big blockbuster guy for a reason.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_05: I just don't think I like the way he directs.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_02: Do you like In the Heights?
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_02: I did not.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_02: Right, okay.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_02: Uh interesting because also like In the Heights is my the show, it's my favorite show of all time.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_02: I did not like the movie that much.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_05: I remember seeing the movie with a bunch of friends and just being like, oh, is this what this is?
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_05: I don't think I like this.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_05: And I think it's also just like it is a thing that doesn't work for me, and I think it is just like a very modern way of shooting musicals that I'm just like I really don't like.
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_05: Uh I think he's a guy that shoots with coverage, and I'm just like, I I want specific, I want choreography in the camera.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_05: I don't want to just be like, look, you can see them all, you can see all the moves.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_05: Um, I think, yeah, it's just so modern in a way that I I really don't like, and it just it looks bad.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_02: I think that that's when you look at like West Side Story, the and the Spielberg one that just came out, and that you look at the coverage on that, and like shooting, you're talking about shooting within the camera, and like the the choreography within the camera.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_02: So well done in the although you wanna You don't like it.
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_05: I don't like the new Westside story either.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_05: Which is great, and I I I I'm like I want to give it another shot because the original Westside story is one of my favorite mute movies, which I think is why I was like, oh, it's not and you know what it is uh Yanis Kaminsky, uh Spielberg's DP, loves to desaturate a little bit.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_05: And it's like it's a movie shot on film that is so vibrant and beautiful.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, the original has a way that it looks and it's very technical and whatnot.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_05: So when I watched, I'm just sort of like, oh, I don't want, I don't want the Spielbergian 2000s realism.
- 1:13:05SPEAKER_05: I I want I want beautiful, bounceful color.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_05: Um, but I also it's not that it's a bad movie, I think it's just comparing it to the original is so hard.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_05: Wicked, I hadn't I had no conception of the play.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_05: Same, same.
- 1:13:17SPEAKER_05: I went into a blind and I was just sort of like, oh, okay.
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_05: And then I I went and saw it again, being like, ah, I think I'm not, I think I saw it three times.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_05: What?
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_05: No, you know what?
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_05: I saw it two and a half times.
- 1:13:29SPEAKER_05: One time I was just like, I'm giving up.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_05: Um, but I was just like, it's not for me.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_05: No, I didn't even bother.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_02: Part two is so much worse.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_02: Ugh.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_05: And that's what everyone's even the people who liked it said.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_05: So I was just like, I don't, I think I'm just not gonna I don't want to be, I'm not, I'm not someone who's like, I can't wait to make fun of this.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_05: I'm like, I just don't want to do it.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's yeah.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_02: Like part two makes part one look so much better.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_02: That's crazy.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_02: Which is crazy because like part one is so it's just boring.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_05: It is, and it's like they do a lot.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_05: I think a lot of times people mix uh having color up with just like being a colorful movie, and it's like that is a movie that has color, but the way that it's used with the light and stuff just makes it look so drab and flat.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_05: And I'm just like, I don't know if it's just the staging or the blocking or what, but I just I don't know.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_05: Um, and I just yeah, I really don't like it.
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_05: It doesn't, it feels like they were trying to they put a lot of work into the production design to be like, it's kind of like if we filmed the stage musical.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_05: I'm like, but I don't want that.
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_05: I want a movie that feels separate from like look at all the things in this in this shot.
- 1:14:31SPEAKER_05: Um and I will say though, the uh dancing through life sequence in the library, I was like, this is the closest to get I get to being like, this is what I want from musical.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_05: I think Jonathan Bailey is so charming in it and it's so fun.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_05: I just the rest of the movie I was not on board with.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_02: It's interesting because I also went back and watched W uh Wizard of Oz.
- 1:14:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like not long afterwards, and I was like, this is how you do it.
- 1:14:50SPEAKER_02: It's I mean, it's it's such an unfair comparison.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_02: I know it's an unfair comparison, but like at the same time, you're making it based off of the IP of the like.
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_05: I also they did this thing with the PR that I really hate when movies do, when they're just like uh they show you the behind the scenes to be like, we really built all this.
- 1:15:06SPEAKER_05: I'm like, you built a flat version of it and then covered it up in CG.
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_05: Stop saying that you did this.
- 1:15:11SPEAKER_05: It's it's I I really it it feels uh like a lie, and I know that it works with people because people will be like, they really built that train.
- 1:15:19SPEAKER_05: I'm like, no, they didn't build the train you're seeing.
- 1:15:21SPEAKER_05: They built a train for backgrounds and then they they shot it in shallow focus and then covered it all up with CG.
- 1:15:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, uh, because they had to match it with the moving shots of the train.
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_05: And I'm just like, it's not it, it's very frustrating because you can tell when you look at it that that is not there.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_05: Uh, and I'm like, I understand when you have to do that.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_05: I'm not like uh everything should be practical, but don't build a thing and then tell us we built it.
- 1:15:42SPEAKER_05: And it's all it just feels very frustrating.
- 1:15:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I completely agree with that.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_05: I will just I'll say the other movie that I was gonna say uh Shape of Water.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_02: Oh, interesting.
- 1:15:51SPEAKER_02: Don't like the Shape of Water.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_02: I wouldn't expect that.
- 1:15:53SPEAKER_05: I really didn't like it, and I think it's like uh uh this is the way that I think a lot of people feel about uh Del Toro stuff, at least that I've talked to, where it's like we love him so much and really root for everything he's doing for the industry.
- 1:16:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:16:05SPEAKER_05: And sometimes his movies I'm just like, I don't know.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I felt that with Nightmare Alley.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_05: Well, I I looked back at my review of Nightmare Alley recently because I was talking about it with a friend and I didn't remember what I said or what I thought of it, which is pretty much the only reason I'm on Letterboxd.
- 1:16:19SPEAKER_05: And I was like, oh, I liked Nightmare Alley, uh, but I don't remember it very well.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_05: Shape of Water, though, I remember going to see it and just being like, ah, I don't.
- 1:16:28SPEAKER_05: And I felt like I was crazy because it was like I went to a uh like a very early screening where it was like Academy voters were there and Del Toro and Vanessa Taylor, his co-writer, were there.
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_05: And I was just sort of like, I feel bad.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_05: I think everyone loved this, and I really didn't like it.
- 1:16:43SPEAKER_05: And then I watched it again at home with a friend being like, I gotta, I was just wrong.
- 1:16:47SPEAKER_05: I was just wrong.
- 1:16:47SPEAKER_05: And I was like, no, I really don't like this.
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_05: And I just feel like it's like allegorically, it doesn't work for me.
- 1:16:53SPEAKER_05: Uh trying to tie in like this this merman to civil rights and just sort of making it a weirdly sexual story, and then just so much stuff with Michael Shannon and the fairy tale of all just like it all doesn't, it's pieces of interesting stuff, but I was like, it doesn't really work for me.
- 1:17:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I can see that.
- 1:17:09SPEAKER_05: Um, but I I that was one that when it came out, I was like, I don't need this to be like I'm not this isn't a fight I want to have.
- 1:17:16SPEAKER_05: I don't care if people like it.
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_05: And then it won Best Picture, and I was just like, Really?
- 1:17:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that that I was shocked by it.
- 1:17:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I was just like, I really don't because it does that felt a little bit like, well, Del Toro, I mean, he made Pan's Labyrinth, and I'm like, Pan's Labyrinth is great.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_05: Pan's Labyrinth is a classic.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_05: But I am just a little, I was just shocked that like when you look back in the in the like analys of like what won what year, you can kind of go like I understand why that one, I understand why that one.
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_05: And with Shape of Water, I'm just like, I really don't understand.
- 1:17:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's one where I'm like, I I always forget that it won, and then I go back and I'm like, oh, that's really strange.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_02: Because I'm I'm trying to remember what year did it um I want to say 2017.
- 1:17:51SPEAKER_05: And there are like movies where I'm like, oh, I cynically can see why Green Book won.
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_05: I can cynically see why why this won.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_05: But Shape of Water, I'm like, I'm not cynical about that movie, and I even in a cynical lens, I'm like, I don't understand it.
- 1:18:03SPEAKER_05: What was it up against?
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_02: Uh that's what I'm trying to find now.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_02: Uh 90th, so that was the 90th Academy Awards, and it beat.
- 1:18:11SPEAKER_02: Is it the year of Get Out?
- 1:18:13SPEAKER_02: It's it's the year of a lot of good movies.
- 1:18:15SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 1:18:16SPEAKER_02: So it's Call Me by Your Name.
- 1:18:18SPEAKER_02: Crazy.
- 1:18:18SPEAKER_02: Uh Get Out, Ladybird.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 1:18:21SPEAKER_02: Phantom Thread.
- 1:18:22SPEAKER_02: Jesus Christ.
- 1:18:23SPEAKER_02: Three billboards, the post.
- 1:18:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, three billboards of the post, and darkest hour in Dunkirk.
- 1:18:29SPEAKER_05: Three billboards of the post and darkest hours are the ones where I'm just like, eh.
- 1:18:33SPEAKER_05: Uh, even though I'm like, the post is not bad.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_05: It's fine.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_05: It's fine.
- 1:18:37SPEAKER_05: Um, three billboards, I think, is an evil movie.
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I agree.
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_05: Uh, I haven't, I never saw Darkest Hour.
- 1:18:42SPEAKER_05: I was like, I don't care.
- 1:18:43SPEAKER_05: Uh, but Call Me by Your Name, Ladybird, Get Out, and Dunkirk is crazy.
- 1:18:48SPEAKER_05: That is crazy.
- 1:18:48SPEAKER_05: That they were like Shape of Water.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_02: Although I also don't like Dunkirk.
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_05: I I love Dunkirk, but I'm also like, it's not a best picture.
- 1:18:55SPEAKER_05: It's like a wow, this is a really solid Nolan movie to me.
- 1:18:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_05: Um, but crazy.
- 1:19:01SPEAKER_02: It's crazy that the shape out of all of those, the shape of it makes me wonder if there were just too many competing, and then it just like it just like slipped in.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_05: Maybe.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_05: I could see call me by your name and get out splitting.
- 1:19:11SPEAKER_05: I don't, but even that, I'm like, it's just insane.
- 1:19:13SPEAKER_05: It's just wild to me.
- 1:19:14SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't know.
- 1:19:15SPEAKER_02: I feel like Dunkirk must have been up there for it.
- 1:19:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm I'm sure.
- 1:19:19SPEAKER_02: Oh, I imagine it was close.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_02: And then get out.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_02: It was just yeah.
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_02: From that from that list, get out should have won it.
- 1:19:26SPEAKER_05: I could see a world in which it was like if they ever released the and they shouldn't release the vote tallies, because then it's like never filming should be like, okay, I got the lowest for everything.
- 1:19:35SPEAKER_05: Great.
- 1:19:36SPEAKER_05: Uh, but if they ever did, I'm like, I could I would bet that get out was second.
- 1:19:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:19:42SPEAKER_05: Uh which is so insane that a movie about uh race and blackness lost to a movie that's just sort of like it's kind of like being a fish, honestly.
- 1:19:53SPEAKER_05: Um wow.
- 1:19:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:58SPEAKER_02: I I saw The Shape of Water at um the London Film Festival, I remember, and I had the same thing of like uh he was there, his co-writer was there, um, and a bunch of people, everyone loved it there.
- 1:20:08SPEAKER_02: When I I really enjoyed it there, and then like thinking back, and I was like, it's good, but it's not like amazing.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_05: And there's a lot of stuff in it where I'm just sort of like, that's cool, that's fun.
- 1:20:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:20:18SPEAKER_05: But I it doesn't make a movie that I think is that I personally really enjoyed.
- 1:20:23SPEAKER_05: And so I was just I wouldn't even put it as a picture nominee, to be honest.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_05: No, I'm really sure.
- 1:20:27SPEAKER_05: I it just it feels like at most it's like a a really solid B movie.
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_05: I don't I really don't under it.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_05: It's I think one of the reasons that it just feels like an unfathomable thing to me is like, you know, when people are coming out of the movie and they're like, it's fine, and they see everyone loved and they're like, okay, actually it sucks.
- 1:20:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:20:43SPEAKER_05: I try to not do that.
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_05: So I feel like that's what I do with Shape of Water sometimes, and I'm just like, I'm trying to hold back from saying I think it sucks, because I don't, but I am just like, I'm floored that anyone would have remembered it.
- 1:20:54SPEAKER_05: I like I feel like in a different year it'd be like, oh, yeah, that was cool.
- 1:20:57SPEAKER_05: That was a cute thing he did.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:20:59SPEAKER_05: Uh and then he went on to make like Crimson Peak and stuff, and I'm like, well, no one even thinks about that.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_05: So I don't why is this not the same thing?
- 1:21:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:21:05SPEAKER_02: I kind of like put it in the same level as those.
- 1:21:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:21:07SPEAKER_02: It's like Crimson Peak and Nightmare Alley, where I'd be like, yeah, they're they're fine.
- 1:21:11SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:21:11SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't I don't know.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_02: It's strange.
- 1:21:14SPEAKER_02: It's very strange, very odd.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_02: And I think it yeah, I think him winning those is just is to make up for Pan's Labyrinth.
- 1:21:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:21:22SPEAKER_05: It wasn't well, I feel like it was Pan's Labyrinth and something else that where it's like, well, it's Del Toro.
- 1:21:28SPEAKER_05: I don't really think of Chronos for some not Hellboy either.
- 1:21:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no.
- 1:21:34SPEAKER_02: Pacific Brim.
- 1:21:37SPEAKER_02: No, that's it.
- 1:21:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:21:38SPEAKER_02: Devil's Backbone, Mimic, Hellboy, uh, Pinocchio, Frankenstein.
- 1:21:45SPEAKER_04: Huh.
- 1:21:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's it.
- 1:21:48SPEAKER_02: Oh then.
- 1:21:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Pan's Labyrinth.
- 1:21:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I guess so.
- 1:21:52SPEAKER_02: People love I mean, it's a great movie.
- 1:21:53SPEAKER_02: It is.
- 1:21:54SPEAKER_02: It's I I love Pan's Labyrinth.
- 1:21:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:21:55SPEAKER_02: That's like one of my favorite movies.
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, so that that that's definitely a hot take with Wicked.
- 1:22:01SPEAKER_02: But like, I I I don't actually I don't actually I don't I take that back.
- 1:22:05SPEAKER_02: I don't think it is a hot take.
- 1:22:06SPEAKER_02: I know a lot of people that do not like it.
- 1:22:07SPEAKER_05: I know a lot of people who don't like it too, but I also know the people who love it, and I'm I think they always think I'm like trying to take it.
- 1:22:12SPEAKER_05: I'm like, I don't know, you should love it.
- 1:22:14SPEAKER_05: I'm great, it's great that you like it.
- 1:22:16SPEAKER_05: I do not.
- 1:22:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_05: Uh but I also think I'm very I'm weirdly particular about musicals.
- 1:22:20SPEAKER_05: I think I don't like a lot of modern musicals because they are shot like they're trying to adapt a stage thing.
- 1:22:27SPEAKER_05: I'm like, I don't care about the stage musical.
- 1:22:29SPEAKER_05: I don't want to see the stage.
- 1:22:30SPEAKER_05: I want to see a movie.
- 1:22:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:22:31SPEAKER_05: I want cinematography.
- 1:22:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:22:33SPEAKER_05: I I think I'm always just I don't know.
- 1:22:35SPEAKER_05: It's also a thing that I think is like, and this just makes me sound like an old man yelling at a crowd a cloud now, but like there's a weird like TikTokification of things where it's like dancing is so vertical now uh because of TikTok that I'm like, well, I want to see horizontal movement, I want to see stuff that feels like they're moving around in a space very specifically.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_05: I want to see camera work and movement and like choreography that feels like it's really missing.
- 1:22:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:22:59SPEAKER_02: It's really missing from the from the musicals now.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_02: And it's like, yeah.
- 1:23:02SPEAKER_02: I look back on like some of the old, old musicals, and I'm like, this is so fun.
- 1:23:07SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:23:07SPEAKER_02: And like, especially like the mu the ones from like the 40s and 50s, and like that that peak musical time.
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_02: It's really, it's so different.
- 1:23:16SPEAKER_05: They're like interacting with each other, like with the set in an interesting way.
- 1:23:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:23:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:23:20SPEAKER_02: Uh I rewatched um I saw what was it last last year or the year before, I went to see um an American in Paris on but we watched it on like one of those outdoor screenings, and it's just like it's so fun to see the movement and the interact, like you say, the interaction of like them the everything is just so purposeful.
- 1:23:39SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:23:39SPEAKER_02: It's beautiful.
- 1:23:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:23:41SPEAKER_02: And it's not even like an it's not even like one of the better musicals.
- 1:23:44SPEAKER_02: It's just like it's just so interesting to see.
- 1:23:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:23:47SPEAKER_05: Like I mean, also, but like Gene Kelly in particular, it's like he he puts so much into everything, and it's not something you get with a lot of uh artists now.
- 1:23:55unknown: Yeah.
- 1:23:56SPEAKER_05: Which I understand.
- 1:23:56SPEAKER_05: It's like you you don't have to be as much of a Renaissance man as you used to.
- 1:23:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_05: But I am just like, I miss dancers.
- 1:24:02SPEAKER_05: I miss when it was like the biggest actors in the world are also athletes.
- 1:24:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:24:06SPEAKER_05: Uh, and not in a way where it's like they have to be in a uh fighting movie every year.
- 1:24:10SPEAKER_05: I'm like, I want I want someone who's like, I want Vin Diesel to be a dancer.
- 1:24:14SPEAKER_05: Like, why isn't he?
- 1:24:15SPEAKER_05: I feel like it's his calling.
- 1:24:17SPEAKER_05: Oh, he well, you know, he started in breakdancing.
- 1:24:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:24:20unknown: Bring it back, dude.
- 1:24:22SPEAKER_05: Uh I bring it.
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_05: I I when I saw RRR, I was like, they put a dance sequence in here, and it does feel like it's one of those scenes where you recognize how athletic they have to be to do this.
- 1:24:30SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 1:24:31SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, it's I wish Americans saw that and go, got it, I want to show that off.
- 1:24:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:24:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:24:36SPEAKER_02: Well, they did they kind of did, but like where they were like, okay, well, the song is fun, but like, no, you're missing everything else about it.
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:24:45SPEAKER_02: Um, okay, yeah, to back bring it back to uh bring it back around.
- 1:24:50SPEAKER_02: You said about um you're talking about dancing and everything and how you want that in you put a lot of it into your videos as well, I feel like.
- 1:24:58SPEAKER_02: And you put is that something that's like really important to you?
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I've I've always loved dancing.
- 1:25:03SPEAKER_05: I consider myself a dancer.
- 1:25:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you definitely are.
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_05: And I uh uh just yeah, I think it's also like as much as I love I love planning.
- 1:25:12SPEAKER_05: I think I I'm big on when I'm writing something, it's planning.
- 1:25:15SPEAKER_05: And I think that when I shoot something with dance, it's because I well I love movement, but I also love choreography and I love planning and I love reveals and I love the idea of like uh the body is a physical sort of like like a way to use do comedy and stuff, and I I think it's just so fun to include dance in everything I do.
- 1:25:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but yeah.
- 1:25:34SPEAKER_02: There was the there's a really good secret, there's a like an amazing secret in one of your um September videos where um where you're in you're dancing in something and it's rotating and it's just like I love that so much because it's so it's so intentional and so you ha it's so thought out, yeah.
- 1:25:53SPEAKER_02: And you have to really choreograph it so specifically.
- 1:25:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we had to we had to do a lot of being like, okay, what can I do before the thing is fully rotated so I don't uh reveal the thing up top, but it also is like with a lot of the September videos, it's the Paul Newman thing again, where I'm like, you're like, oh it's great, and I'm just like, yeah, and I can only see that like I I did this move and I should have done this move where like, oh, I missed the choreography on this.
- 1:26:13SPEAKER_05: Uh but it's also like we didn't do choreography until the very last one because I was just like, I just want to focus on the reveals, and it was a lot of me directing while acting, and yeah, I had to do a lot of learning as I went along.
- 1:26:23SPEAKER_05: Interesting.
- 1:26:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:26:24SPEAKER_02: Oh, cool.
- 1:26:24SPEAKER_02: Well, there's uh it's great.
- 1:26:26SPEAKER_02: Like I I love those videos so much.
- 1:26:27SPEAKER_02: I know you're never I don't I'm not gonna say never, but like I know you you don't want to go back to the next one.
- 1:26:31SPEAKER_05: I'm not I don't intend to go back to it.
- 1:26:33SPEAKER_05: I'm always just like, well, if I had the time, I'd just do a new thing.
- 1:26:36SPEAKER_02: It's so funny because I I went back and watched I went back and rewatched them all.
- 1:26:40SPEAKER_02: And it's so funny the the the very first one to the very last one.
- 1:26:45SPEAKER_02: It's and it it's it's what I love about it is like there's a move in each one of them that you incorporate and you add to each one and you like so you just keep building on each of them.
- 1:26:55SPEAKER_05: I really yeah.
- 1:26:56SPEAKER_05: It was very funny.
- 1:26:57SPEAKER_05: Uh I I started dating someone and she had never heard of it, thank God.
- 1:27:01SPEAKER_05: And I was just like, Oh, I feel like it's a big part of my lore, you should watch them.
- 1:27:04SPEAKER_05: And I was like, watch them on your own time.
- 1:27:05SPEAKER_05: She's like, I'm gonna watch them now.
- 1:27:06SPEAKER_05: And she it was just we us on the phone and she's watching, it's like fuck, okay.
- 1:27:10SPEAKER_05: And just like it is fun to sort of see it through someone else's eyes and just have it be like, oh my god.
- 1:27:15SPEAKER_05: Like every time it goes up, I'm like, well, yeah, that was the point.
- 1:27:18SPEAKER_05: I wanted people to go like, holy shit.
- 1:27:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:27:19SPEAKER_05: And it was fun to do, but at a certain point, you're just like, I can't keep doing this, and also it's so much work and so much money.
- 1:27:24SPEAKER_05: That's the thing, yeah.
- 1:27:25SPEAKER_05: That last one was like eight minutes long and cost me$40,000.
- 1:27:29SPEAKER_02: Fuck.
- 1:27:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:27:31SPEAKER_02: Well, I guess I can see it.
- 1:27:33SPEAKER_02: I can see why.
- 1:27:34SPEAKER_05: And it's like in the end, it's like, well, it raised a million dollars, so it's like, what a good multiplier.
- 1:27:39SPEAKER_05: It raised a million dollars.
- 1:27:40SPEAKER_05: It raised a million dollars, yeah.
- 1:27:41SPEAKER_02: Amazing.
- 1:27:41SPEAKER_05: Congratulations.
- 1:27:42SPEAKER_05: Like that's that's incredible.
- 1:27:44SPEAKER_05: Lose$40,000 though.
- 1:27:45SPEAKER_05: But I also it's like all for good cause, but I also am just sort of like, there's only uh and I I did that on purpose at the end, being like, I want to spend the most money to just go out.
- 1:27:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:27:54SPEAKER_05: Um, but I also just think there's only so many things I can do with that that's fun, that doesn't feel like now it's a puzzle and a challenge.
- 1:28:00SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, well, if I have that energy, I'd like to put it into something that feels more uh like driven in a way.
- 1:28:08SPEAKER_05: It was just like those were things that I did.
- 1:28:09SPEAKER_05: I'm being like, this is me directing.
- 1:28:10SPEAKER_05: This is me making a video that is like an exercise for people to see I'm a director.
- 1:28:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:28:15SPEAKER_05: And I was like, I'd rather just be a director.
- 1:28:16SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 1:28:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:28:18SPEAKER_02: No, it's great.
- 1:28:18SPEAKER_02: I and please keep doing what you do.
- 1:28:21SPEAKER_02: Like you you it's so good.
- 1:28:22SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 1:28:22SPEAKER_02: I appreciate it.
- 1:28:23SPEAKER_02: I really enjoy it.
- 1:28:23SPEAKER_02: And it's like it's it's again, it's like a lot of this stuff is my way into like discovering your stuff, but now like yeah, now I see you on dropout all the time.
- 1:28:33SPEAKER_02: I see you like do so many different things, and like, yeah, it's it's so funny seeing you on dropout and seeing like because I know a bunch of the dropout people as well.
- 1:28:40SPEAKER_02: So like I'm I'm friends with like Brennan and Raker.
- 1:28:43SPEAKER_02: And so I just see when you see when I see you pop up with them, I'm like, oh, it's great.
- 1:28:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:28:46SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 1:28:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:28:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:28:48SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's great.
- 1:28:49SPEAKER_02: Um, thank you so much for coming on.
- 1:28:51SPEAKER_02: Thank you for having me.
- 1:28:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's been really nice.
- 1:28:52SPEAKER_02: It's like uh do you um I guess people know how to find you, but like I'll I'll put you put your own.
- 1:28:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, please.
- 1:29:00SPEAKER_05: I'm at Electrolemon everywhere, I think.
- 1:29:03SPEAKER_05: Uh except for the places I met Dimmy Digibay.
- 1:29:07SPEAKER_05: You gotta figure out which is which.
- 1:29:08SPEAKER_05: Uh and I have a show that I'm doing in Edinburgh this summer called Dimmy Digibay sells out.
- 1:29:13SPEAKER_05: Uh it's every day for August 5th to the 30th at the Pleasants Queen Dome, 645.
- 1:29:18unknown: Nice.
- 1:29:18SPEAKER_05: Come and see it.
- 1:29:19SPEAKER_05: Queen Dome, great.
- 1:29:20SPEAKER_05: That's gonna be everyone has that response.
- 1:29:22SPEAKER_05: I'm just like, what is I I think I remember the Queen Dome is.
- 1:29:26SPEAKER_05: Okay, great.
- 1:29:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:29:27SPEAKER_05: Yay.
- 1:29:28SPEAKER_02: No, it's really fun.
- 1:29:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:29:29SPEAKER_02: I think I saw Jordan Brooks in there a couple years ago.
- 1:29:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:29:31SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 1:29:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:29:32SPEAKER_02: And that was like he was doing a music for like a full-on musical or something.
- 1:29:35SPEAKER_05: My it's not a full-on musical, but I do have I'm like, I think I'm gonna try and make it bigger for Edinburgh.
- 1:29:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:29:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:29:40SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's a it's a really nice you'll you'll love that room.
- 1:29:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:29:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:29:42SPEAKER_05: I'm excited.
- 1:29:43SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 1:29:43SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much for coming on.
- 1:29:45SPEAKER_05: Thank you for having me.
