Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now we know that the Darwin Salties, well they're set
- 0:03Speaker 1: to get into their second year and it is in
- 0:05Speaker 1: the semi professional NBL one basketball competition, so it all
- 0:09Speaker 1: kicks off for I think, would you say bounce off
- 0:11Speaker 1: is maybe the more appropriate way of saying things on
- 0:14Speaker 1: the twenty fifth, which is going to be awesome, and
- 0:17Speaker 1: we know that twenty twenty two was indeed a massive success.
- 0:21Speaker 1: The Salties had the biggest crowds of any of the
- 0:23Speaker 1: NBL one clubs and were one of the most watched online.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Now joining me in the studio to tell us a
- 0:30Speaker 1: little bit more about what we can expect for the season.
- 0:33Speaker 1: It is the Salties women's coach rod Tremlin. Good morning
- 0:37Speaker 1: to you.
- 0:37Speaker 2: And Katie, thanks for having us.
- 0:38Speaker 1: And we've also got one of the star players I
- 0:41Speaker 1: think you'd have to say in American import, Aaron Bohlman,
- 0:44Speaker 1: good morning to you.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Erin, good morning, thanks for having us.
- 0:46Speaker 1: It's great to have you both in the studio. Firstly,
- 0:49Speaker 1: we're just well we're not too far out. Are you pumped?
- 0:51Speaker 2: Yeah, we're ready to go. It's been an interrupted preseason
- 0:56Speaker 2: probably we would say we're waiting on our couple of
- 0:59Speaker 2: WNBL players to join us. Chelsea Brooks now joined us
- 1:03Speaker 2: she's a returning player from last year, and Ruby Porter
- 1:06Speaker 2: her eyes from the Benigo Spirit tomorrow. So yeah, and
- 1:10Speaker 2: then that completes our roster. Everyone's on deck, so we're
- 1:12Speaker 2: looking forward to having them all year. Yeah, and ready go.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Is it a bit harder when you don't have the
- 1:16Speaker 1: whole team here yet?
- 1:18Speaker 3: Eron?
- 1:18Speaker 1: Or do you just kind of do what you gotta do?
- 1:20Speaker 3: The only problem is we're trying to go up and
- 1:22Speaker 3: down and play some basketball with each other, and we've
- 1:24Speaker 3: got about seven or eight healthy bodies at the moment,
- 1:27Speaker 3: So getting those WNBL players to come in and like
- 1:30Speaker 3: getting us scrimmaging and playing some basketball would be really helpful.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Now, speaking of healthy bodies, how's your wrist because it
- 1:37Speaker 1: was a concern, wasn't it sort of earlier last year?
- 1:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I tore a ligament in my wrist about six
- 1:42Speaker 3: game in and yeah, it's been a long, long recovery,
- 1:45Speaker 3: but I feel really really happy about it. I think
- 1:48Speaker 3: we're ready. I think being in the point our position
- 1:50Speaker 3: and being able to use my hand again is going
- 1:53Speaker 3: to be really good for our team. So it's feeling good,
- 1:55Speaker 3: and I have to say that in front of my coach.
- 1:57Speaker 1: That's going to say, rock, Are you happy at that risk?
- 2:01Speaker 2: Yeah, it's good to go. And certainly we've got a
- 2:04Speaker 2: real glimpse last year about what Aaron can do and
- 2:07Speaker 2: she was a crowd favorite excuse me, and she won
- 2:11Speaker 2: our player of the Year in terms of her dedication
- 2:16Speaker 2: to community. So we're really really proud of that and
- 2:19Speaker 2: what Erin's brought to the table and what was a
- 2:21Speaker 2: really tough time for her, only getting six games of
- 2:23Speaker 2: the season in, but Aaron's chosen to stay on and
- 2:26Speaker 2: work in the community and being a great role model
- 2:29Speaker 2: for the young basketballers. So it's been great.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Now it taught me through that a little bit more
- 2:33Speaker 1: because I think when the SALTI is sort of launched,
- 2:36Speaker 1: I don't know that Territorians had really any idea how
- 2:40Speaker 1: big an impact it would actually have on the community
- 2:44Speaker 1: and how hugely the teams would be embraced in both
- 2:48Speaker 1: the men's and women's competitions. Aaron, what's that been like
- 2:52Speaker 1: for you coming from the US and into a place
- 2:55Speaker 1: like Darwin and seeing the way that the community has
- 2:57Speaker 1: really embraced you.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Well, that's one of the things I love about Australia
- 3:00Speaker 3: is just the people showing up for them. When I
- 3:04Speaker 3: was in Southeast Missouri where I'm from, you know, there's
- 3:07Speaker 3: a couple of people at are games, you know, not
- 3:09Speaker 3: that much of a hype within the area. And then
- 3:10Speaker 3: I come here and it's one of the biggest crowds
- 3:12Speaker 3: I've ever played in front of. First game, right, it's
- 3:14Speaker 3: not a finals game, it's the first game. And to
- 3:16Speaker 3: see people show up for especially the women's it's something
- 3:19Speaker 3: that I think men's are hypes. I love the men's
- 3:22Speaker 3: team there, you know, mcquatch gets that dunk in the
- 3:24Speaker 3: first game, but we also have something to give to
- 3:27Speaker 3: the community as well as the females, and it's something
- 3:29Speaker 3: for young females to look forward to as well that
- 3:31Speaker 3: they could potentially play for such a high level team. Yeah,
- 3:34Speaker 3: I think it's Yeah, it's really good the experience and
- 3:36Speaker 3: I love it. Yeah.
- 3:37Speaker 2: I think when we kind of joined the league CAWD,
- 3:39Speaker 2: To be honest with you, none of us knew that.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Like I've been involved as a coach for twenty five
- 3:44Speaker 2: years here in the territory, and to be honest with you,
- 3:47Speaker 2: it wasn't for the vision of the don boswel Association
- 3:50Speaker 2: and Bosbel worldn Territory coming together. It's been a big
- 3:52Speaker 2: risk for both organizations to take this step. It's a
- 3:55Speaker 2: costly exercise, but you know they have vision has been
- 4:00Speaker 2: fantastic for us and it was really a huge unknown.
- 4:04Speaker 2: But to get the results and the support we've got
- 4:06Speaker 2: and having lines of fifty to one hundred young girls
- 4:09Speaker 2: after games wanting autographs from players, we just never really
- 4:12Speaker 2: expected that. So to get that done and then get
- 4:15Speaker 2: the great support by our corporate partners and that's built
- 4:19Speaker 2: this year which is great to see, and just having
- 4:21Speaker 2: the community come out and support the soldies was an
- 4:23Speaker 2: amazing first year.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it is incredible, And like you said, you've been
- 4:26Speaker 1: involved in the sport for such a long period of time.
- 4:29Speaker 1: You know you're a territory and there's no doubt about that,
- 4:32Speaker 1: so you must feel really proud then when you do
- 4:34Speaker 1: see those young juniors like wanting to you know, wanting
- 4:38Speaker 1: to be part of it all.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Yeah, it's great. I mean it's fantastic, and you know,
- 4:42Speaker 2: we've been really lucky to add a couple of those
- 4:44Speaker 2: local juniors to our squad of fifteen this year and
- 4:47Speaker 2: Amy List who's come in as a development player last
- 4:50Speaker 2: year and now had a great league season and made
- 4:53Speaker 2: the fifteen this year is a terrific story. Young Sophie
- 4:56Speaker 2: Palmer is another great story. She had to go away
- 4:59Speaker 2: to Victoria play at the higher level in the under
- 5:01Speaker 2: eighteen's competition to you know, extend her capabilities down there
- 5:04Speaker 2: and did that and has now come back and she's
- 5:07Speaker 2: in our fifteen as well. So and then some of
- 5:09Speaker 2: the like we won't call them aging veterans, but we've
- 5:12Speaker 2: got some twenty seven to thirty year olds who were
- 5:15Speaker 2: seventeen juniors, yes, but they were local juniors. Kylie dug
- 5:19Speaker 2: and Clara O'Brien, they're all Territorians, Yeah, who not for
- 5:23Speaker 2: the Soldies, would have had to move into state to
- 5:25Speaker 2: be able to play at this level.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:27Speaker 2: So we're really proud of all our players. But the
- 5:30Speaker 2: story around, the inspirational story for our young ones to
- 5:32Speaker 2: be able to see those players now coming in at
- 5:34Speaker 2: the next level and create that pathway for them is
- 5:37Speaker 2: really exciting.
- 5:38Speaker 1: And Aaron, you do some work with those with those
- 5:40Speaker 1: younger kids. Do you have even coaching in the off season?
- 5:43Speaker 4: Is that right?
- 5:43Speaker 3: I have? I hope Brad's okay with that, but yeah,
- 5:46Speaker 3: there's just such a big pool for especially young women
- 5:51Speaker 3: who want to be individually trained, who want some extra
- 5:55Speaker 3: workouts on the side, and that's something that I want
- 5:57Speaker 3: to at least pass on well, especially in the off season,
- 6:00Speaker 3: what I can do to help this community in the
- 6:01Speaker 3: basketball realm, because I mean that there is these pathways,
- 6:04Speaker 3: so like NBL one for right now, maybe WNBL in
- 6:07Speaker 3: the future, but if there are these pathways that I
- 6:09Speaker 3: would love to start at a young age with this
- 6:11Speaker 3: community and just help as much as they can.
- 6:13Speaker 4: I love that, Like I love.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Sport, and I love what it can do for a
- 6:16Speaker 1: community and for a place like Darwin, but I love
- 6:19Speaker 1: what it does for young girls as well in terms
- 6:22Speaker 1: of really boosting that confidence. You know you're part of
- 6:25Speaker 1: something and you're feeling like you're part of something and
- 6:27Speaker 1: having people to look up to, I think is a
- 6:29Speaker 1: really really important part of that and something that I
- 6:33Speaker 1: did you anticipate that the Salties were going to be
- 6:35Speaker 1: able to do that, right.
- 6:37Speaker 2: We just really have been overwhelmed, to be honest with you,
- 6:40Speaker 2: by the support. We couldn't be more thankful, particularly in
- 6:43Speaker 2: non territory government have been a huge supporter for us.
- 6:46Speaker 2: You know, we wouldn't been able to get this thing
- 6:47Speaker 2: off the ground without their support. But also then our
- 6:50Speaker 2: corporate partners that have come on have really helped. And
- 6:52Speaker 2: I think the other thing we kind of a lot
- 6:54Speaker 2: of people don't see, but the army of volunteers behind
- 6:57Speaker 2: the scenes that help get the stadium ready, get all
- 7:00Speaker 2: the corporate boxes sworded, get all that prepared. We've created
- 7:03Speaker 2: our pathways for score bench officials, for young referees, for coaches.
- 7:08Speaker 2: So we've had the last two years, so we had
- 7:10Speaker 2: Francis Fatnauna as our development coach last year. This year
- 7:13Speaker 2: we have Jayleen Boundary, both young women who now are
- 7:16Speaker 2: getting opportunity to be involved at the next level. So
- 7:19Speaker 2: it's been like, you know, the players get the spotlight
- 7:21Speaker 2: and rightly so, but that army of volunteers and people
- 7:24Speaker 2: behind the scenes that are also all getting up skilled
- 7:27Speaker 2: because of the existence of the Soldies now is huge
- 7:29Speaker 2: and it's great for the community.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Yeah, it is really wonderful. Now tickets are on sale
- 7:33Speaker 1: to Round one. Who are we taking on.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I've got some District Spartans in the first game. They're
- 7:40Speaker 2: a really successful team. We're involved in national finals last year,
- 7:45Speaker 2: so they're going to be a really good test for
- 7:46Speaker 2: us in our first first game. So early on in
- 7:50Speaker 2: the season, it's always tough. Lots of clubs are still
- 7:53Speaker 2: bringing in imports and waiting on athletes that are playing
- 7:56Speaker 2: in the US college system to come back, and so
- 7:59Speaker 2: probably takes the first three or four rounds for everyone
- 8:01Speaker 2: to have their rosters sorded and finalized and whatever else.
- 8:04Speaker 2: So you're not really sure what you're going to get
- 8:07Speaker 2: in the first two or three rounds. Well, that sorts
- 8:09Speaker 2: itself out, but yeah, we're expecting a really tough competition
- 8:13Speaker 2: from them, and there they were at the in the
- 8:15Speaker 2: the top end of the ladder last year, So how
- 8:18Speaker 2: are you feeling erin?
- 8:20Speaker 3: It's a tough team. But how Right has done a
- 8:23Speaker 3: really good job at stacking our team this year with
- 8:25Speaker 3: some really good shooting guards. We have Subaso who's coming
- 8:28Speaker 3: in as a post, really good hands, really aggressive, something
- 8:31Speaker 3: that we were missing a little bit last year. But
- 8:33Speaker 3: I'm just within practice, we're seeing some really good things
- 8:36Speaker 3: and I think we're gonna come out in this first
- 8:38Speaker 3: game and show them what we got. Like last year,
- 8:40Speaker 3: we came out and won by I think it was
- 8:42Speaker 3: by twenty, and it was a full stacked house, and
- 8:45Speaker 3: that's what we want to do, is just make it
- 8:46Speaker 3: something entertaining, something for people to see. Yeah, I'm really excited.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Absolutely, well, I reckon, we'll get plenty of people there,
- 8:54Speaker 1: and if you are keen to purchase some tickets, you
- 8:56Speaker 1: can do so now at in ticks now. Also, Aeron,
- 9:01Speaker 1: I'm told that we are still looking for a player
- 9:03Speaker 1: sponsor for you, Is that right? Yeah?
- 9:06Speaker 3: Anybody a shout out.
- 9:18Speaker 1: In the studio high fiving, and so if anybody.
- 9:22Speaker 4: Is, we will get a photo with this so that
- 9:33Speaker 4: the listeners know what's going on.
- 9:35Speaker 3: I thought they were a little more a vicious here
- 9:36Speaker 3: and going with the crocodiles.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Not this one. This one can be inappropriate.
- 9:42Speaker 4: So look at.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Just on that.
- 9:47Speaker 4: So you are still looking, we are still looking for
- 9:49Speaker 4: a player sponsor for you.
- 9:50Speaker 1: So if there is anyone that's keen, they can contact
- 9:53Speaker 1: us here at the station and we can get in
- 9:54Speaker 1: contact with you.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Look for player sponsors for Aaron, but for all our
- 9:58Speaker 2: individual players, I think we've all got half the team available.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Awesome to get Gay Night recognition, their recognition on the
- 10:05Speaker 2: socials and all that kind of stuff. So if anyone,
- 10:07Speaker 2: let's get behind are these ladies and their individual sponsorship,
- 10:10Speaker 2: we'd love that.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Mom, Dan, I'm just going to association Mix one O
- 10:19Speaker 1: four nine's on boarders and sponsor this year, and clearly
- 10:21Speaker 1: the Crocodile is excited about that. Now.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Thank you both so very.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Much for coming into the studio this morning. I'm looking
- 10:28Speaker 1: forward to coming and watching a game. It's wonderful and yeah,
- 10:31Speaker 1: really good to have you on the studio today.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Thanks appreciate it.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Thank you.
