- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Brian Medour. RNC in Cornerbrook on the hunt for
- 0:08Speaker 2: a man wanted on a number of charges related to
- 0:11Speaker 2: dangerous driving. Officers tried to pull over a vehicle with
- 0:15Speaker 2: a broken windshield on the Trans-Canada near Cornerbrook last Friday evening.
- 0:20Speaker 2: The driver didn't stop, instead hit the gas, pulled away
- 0:23Speaker 2: from officers at speeds as high as 185 kilometers an hour.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Police say attempts to locate 39-year-old Todd White have been unsuccessful.
- 0:32Speaker 2: They're concerned, given his escalating disregard for public safety. White
- 0:38Speaker 2: is wanted on charges of flight from police, dangerous driving,
- 0:41Speaker 2: and driving while suspended. He's 5 feet 8 inches tall,
- 0:45Speaker 2: weighs 150 pounds, has grey hair and blue eyes. Anybody
- 0:50Speaker 2: with info on his whereabouts asked to contact Cornerbrook RNC.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Provincial government moving ahead with a commitment to lower energy
- 0:58Speaker 2: costs for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians with a previously announced 15%
- 1:03Speaker 2: discount on electricity bills associated with Churchill Falls. Premier Wakeham
- 1:08Speaker 2: says government understands. People need help now.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Rather than waiting until the final agreement is completed, beginning
- 1:16Speaker 3: in January 2027, residential customers will see a 15% reduction
- 1:22Speaker 3: in their Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro electricity bills.
- 1:27Speaker 3: This means lower monthly power bills for hundreds of thousands
- 1:31Speaker 3: of households across Newfoundland and Labrador.
- 1:34Speaker 2: In the meantime, government is doubling the home heating supplement
- 1:38Speaker 2: to $ 1, 000 from $ 500 for eligible residents who heat their
- 1:42Speaker 2: homes with oil. Finance Minister Craig Pardee says those who've
- 1:46Speaker 2: already applied need not reapply to get the added support.
- 1:51Speaker 4: As the Premier said, together these initiatives will return approximately
- 1:57Speaker 4: $ 54 million directly back to the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador.
- 2:04Speaker 2: NDP leader Jim Dinh says he would have preferred to
- 2:07Speaker 2: see the elimination of the HST from all forms of
- 2:10Speaker 2: home heat. He says their plan would have helped more people.
- 2:15Speaker 1: But what I heard is that they're going to increase
- 2:17Speaker 1: the home heating supplement for eligible residents, and that sounds good.
- 2:22Speaker 1: but I'll give you anywhere from 500 to 1,000, so
- 2:25Speaker 1: it's a sliding scale. Whereas if they had reduced the HST,
- 2:30Speaker 1: which is what we're calling for from all forms of
- 2:32Speaker 1: home heating.
- 2:34Speaker 2: A resident of Horizons 106 says people still living at
- 2:38Speaker 2: the facility are being left in the dark as the
- 2:41Speaker 2: closure of the program nears. Gracie Smith, who's been living
- 2:45Speaker 2: in the former hotel near the airport for the last
- 2:47Speaker 2: two years, told VOCM Open Line with Brian Callahan that
- 2:51Speaker 2: residents are getting next to no information about what's next.
- 2:55Speaker 2: She says residents dread heading back into the shelter system.
- 2:59Speaker 2: I have no clue where I was living.
- 3:01Speaker 4: I've been trying to get a meeting with NL Housing,
- 3:03Speaker 4: who are supposed to be in the building at least
- 3:04Speaker 4: once a week, which they haven't been.
- 3:06Speaker 2: That's your news. I'm Brian Medour.
