- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talkin' Tech Podcast.
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: My name is Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: Tristan, how are you doing on this fine Monday afternoon?
- 0:51SPEAKER_04: Uh great.
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: I just really, really dislike the school.
- 0:54SPEAKER_04: That is Baylor.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't like them either.
- 0:57SPEAKER_04: I'm not a big fan.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: They're trash and I hate them.
- 1:00SPEAKER_04: Indeed.
- 1:01SPEAKER_04: So I don't like that they're good at basketball.
- 1:05SPEAKER_04: Uh that uh that offends me.
- 1:07SPEAKER_04: And so I guess the total is, I feel 50-50, I would say, as my my common usage would go.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: But the good news is we're recording another episode of the Talk and Tech podcast, and we're sipping on some beverages.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: What are you drinking?
- 1:23SPEAKER_04: I am drinking a little Kentucky bourbon here.
- 1:25SPEAKER_04: I'm working on a little Buffalo Trace, a very great bottle for the price.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: Very nice.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: That's one of the faves for deal.
- 1:34SPEAKER_04: What about you, sir?
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: I am sipping on a beer from a small little brewery out in Bulverde, Texas, uh called Five Stones Brewery.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: It is their uh Manmosa, which is a orangey wheat beer, despite the name.
- 1:51SPEAKER_04: I sound like it sounds like I would really, really like that.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: It's delicious.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: It's super citrusy, it's fantastic.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: If any of y'all are in the uh northern San Antonio Bulverde area, go check out Five Stones.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: It's a cool place.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: I didn't know the hometown grabbed a brewery.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: I didn't either until uh my girlfriend Kristen's uh dad showed it to us.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: Uh it's only about 20 minutes from their house, so it's a it's a cool spot, man, for sure.
- 2:14SPEAKER_04: That's that's awesome.
- 2:15SPEAKER_04: I'll definitely have to check it out back time back whenever I'm in the old stomping grounds.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: But let's get to Texas Tech sports.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: Enough of the small talk.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: We're gonna start with the talk and tech breakdown, which is where a little segment that we introduced last week where we give a little shout out to the smaller sports at Texas Tech.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: Um, so let's start with always with track and field, because it's the best.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: We rock at track and field.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: Uh, we signed another awesome athlete from Nigeria, Rosemary Chukwama, I believe is her name.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: She uh is the she was the world youth Olympics 100 meter dash champion and the African junior champion in the 100 meter and 200 meter.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: So we continue to get international athletes that are just insane coming to Texas Tech.
- 3:02SPEAKER_04: Holy cow, what an accomplished young woman.
- 3:05SPEAKER_04: That is insane.
- 3:06SPEAKER_04: What again?
- 3:07SPEAKER_04: I can't wait to get her to the South Plains and see what she can do.
- 3:09SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: We seem to uh get the best out of every athlete that we bring to Lubbock in the track and field world.
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: So uh shouts out Rosemary.
- 3:17SPEAKER_02: And then I guess up next for them, they have the NCAA indoor championships this weekend, March 12th and 13th.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: Uh, the last time they had the uh in 2020, they canceled the event, but in 2019, uh tech men finished sixth in that, and tech women finished 15th.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: So going for a uh another high finish.
- 3:38SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, it's all we expect from this track field team.
- 3:40SPEAKER_04: And with the the year they've had, who why would we expect any less?
- 3:43SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: So moving on to golf.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: We forgot golf last week.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: We apologize about that.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: I know our born Ludwig, we forgot him.
- 3:51SPEAKER_03: Oh boy, I know.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry, but uh Swedish fish himself.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: Swedish fish himself, but we didn't forget him this week.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: The men finished fourth out of 16 in the Cabo Collegiate uh in San Antonio, Texas.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: The women finished eighth at the icon invitational in Houston, and uh up next, the men are playing in the Texas Invitational in Austin on March 15th and 16th.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: The women are gonna play in the Mary B.
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: S.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: Kuith uh invitational in San Antonio on March 9th and 10th.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: So tomorrow and Wednesday.
- 4:24SPEAKER_04: Well, what more can you say that nothing but high expectations?
- 4:27SPEAKER_04: Once again, the Swedish fish himself better be swimming.
- 4:30SPEAKER_04: I I hope he wrecks it.
- 4:32SPEAKER_04: And I I I just I thought I heard you right.
- 4:34SPEAKER_04: Did you say the Cabo invitational in San Antonio, Texas?
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: Yes, uh the Cabo Collegiate in San Antonio in the very beachy tropical uh city known as San Antonio.
- 4:44SPEAKER_04: The out the Alamo City, you know, beaches, palm trees, it all goes together, right?
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: That's what the tourists come for, I'm telling you.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: But moving on, let's go to softball.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: They go three and one at the Texas Tech Invitational, two and oh against ACU, and then they split the series with uh University of Missouri, Kansas City, bringing the overall record to above 500.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: We are now nine and eight on the season.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, in one of those games, Zoe Jones hit a uh single to middle to drive Heaven Burton in for the winning run for a walk-off in the second game against uh Missouri Kansas City.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: So we beat the Kangaroos in walk-off fashion.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: Shout out to softball.
- 5:24SPEAKER_04: Wait, wait a smack the kangaroos, you know.
- 5:26SPEAKER_04: Very very storied program up there in KC.
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: Um they're actually, I think they're they're actually very good.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: Uh city, I think they're like 10 and 2 or something on the ears.
- 5:36SPEAKER_04: My ignorance is showing, and I apologize to the kangaroos, but I mean I'm glad that our ladies have clawed back to above 500.
- 5:43SPEAKER_04: Dope mascot, a very cool mascot.
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, anything that's fun like that, like the like the team in Louisiana, the okra, the fight.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, fighting okra, dude.
- 5:53SPEAKER_04: Even the raging cajuns rocks, you know, like stuff like that is awesome.
- 5:57SPEAKER_02: Anything different, man.
- 5:58SPEAKER_02: I'm all for.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: But uh up next, we got a three-game series against New Mexico starting Friday, March 12th, and going into a double header on Saturday, March 13th.
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: So let's go beat New Mexico.
- 6:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, the battle for the South Plains there.
- 6:14SPEAKER_04: So let's let's get going.
- 6:15SPEAKER_04: A little cross-state rivalry going.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: So going to tennis, men's tennis.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: We beat uh UT Arlington and Tulane to go two and oh on the week, move the overall record to six and two.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: Up next, we got San Diego on March 12th, and then OU on uh March 14th.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: So the women's tennis did not have the best week, uh, going 0-2 on the week, losing at Baylor and at OU.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: Uh so their overall record now is 7-3.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: Up next, we got a four-game homestand starting with Kansas State on the 12th, and then a double header on the 14th against Kansas and Tarleton State, and then we finish with SMU on the 16th.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: So we got some uh some Kansas showdowns and some uh in-state rivals.
- 6:59SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 6:59SPEAKER_04: It kind of seems a bit to be dropping those games before, you know, with the way the lady started, but you know, with this home stretch, I'm sure they can get it back and going again.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, both of those games or both of those matches were away.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: So, you know, I'm kind of gonna chalk it up to some of that.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: So hopefully the homestand will bring us back to uh what we were doing before.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: So moving on, women's basketball.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: We have the Big 12 tournament uh this coming week, starting on Thursday.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: Uh, Texas Tech will be playing.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure they're either playing Kansas State or Kansas.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: It seems I'm I'm getting mixed uh messages from the old Google on this, but uh both team, both Kansas and Kansas State.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: One of them is gonna be the 10th seed.
- 7:37SPEAKER_02: So we play the 10th seed, the worst team in the Big 12 in the first round, because we are the seventh seed.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: So uh all I can say is the winner of that game will go on to play number two West Virginia.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: West Virginia is a very good team.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: So uh you never know, man.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: Maybe the ladies are gonna you know make some noise in this Big 12 tournament.
- 7:55SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 7:55SPEAKER_04: Weird things can happen in tournaments.
- 7:57SPEAKER_04: So I'm glad that we get the start with a uh the the to be number two 10 team to get it going.
- 8:02SPEAKER_04: So hopefully we can build some momentum from there and and rock it.
- 8:05SPEAKER_04: So let's just do something crazy.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Volleyball did not play this week.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: Next up, they play at Tarleton State on uh Thursday, the 11th, and then finishing off this segment with Texas Tech Soccer, they win their first game of the spring in a dominant 7-0 victory over Southwest.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: Uh Kirsten Davis led the way, two goals and two assists.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: She was the girl that just got drafted uh into the pros.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: So she rocks.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, she's keeping up uh what she started back in fall.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: Um, and then next up we have Alabama, the Crimson Tide in Bozier City, Louisiana.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: A little uh a little neutral site game going on.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: Alabama is 4-0 in the spring with wins over Columbus State, the Raging Cajuns of Louisiana, Montevallo, and Lipscomb.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: And uh three of those schools, not really, I haven't really heard of.
- 8:53SPEAKER_04: I actually have a good buddy that went to Montebalo.
- 8:56SPEAKER_04: That's that's yeah, that's one of those it's in Alabama.
- 8:59SPEAKER_04: Um but uh it's you know, we we expect a lot of our uh soccer team, so I'm glad to see that they're off to a dominant start.
- 9:05SPEAKER_04: And heck, I like seeing Dust test the metal early, you know, why not go play a team like Alabama?
- 9:10SPEAKER_04: So let's let's see what our ladies are at, you know, kind of do a uh measuring stick and and see what's going on.
- 9:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man, take advantage of this spring schedule.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: It's only got five games on it, so you know, take advantage.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: And and the thing about soccer is we were really covet-ridden in the fall.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: We did I didn't realize how covet ridden we were.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: Um, and so that kind of led to our uh our pretty bad record, but you know, uh whatever time to pick it up is is a good time.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: So uh keep on going.
- 9:34SPEAKER_02: By the way, I just want to mention we've mentioned the raging cajuns twice.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: I love how they have just taken on the mantra of being Louisiana and taking over the state.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 9:45SPEAKER_04: Big moves only, yeah.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: Big moves.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: They like LSU is obviously the dominant program of Louisiana, but for the Raging Cages just to say, yeah, you can just call us Louisiana, you know, we're Louisiana, yeah, absolutely.
- 9:57SPEAKER_04: You know, there was it was up for grabs.
- 9:59SPEAKER_04: Why the heck not?
- 10:00SPEAKER_04: It's kind of like the it's kind of like a Texas state situation, you know?
- 10:03SPEAKER_04: Why not just grab a good sounding name if it's out there in the open?
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: They are the team of Louisiana, we've all known it.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: Raging Cajuns.
- 10:11SPEAKER_04: It's Louisiana is a raging Cajun state.
- 10:15SPEAKER_04: It goes Saints, Raging Cajuns, Munro Warhawks, okay, Tulane Waves.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: I think the green wave need to be higher.
- 10:27SPEAKER_04: You're right.
- 10:27SPEAKER_04: All right, let's move them up the Warhawks, and and and then Warhawks, and then the fighting okra of I think it's like yeah, and um Northwestern State, uh, the blue devils there.
- 10:38SPEAKER_04: Grambling, the Grambling Gramblers, the Ramblers there, yeah um, and I I don't think we're missing any, so yeah, yeah.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: Not at all, not that not the team that just won the 20 night 2020 or 2019 uh football championship, whatever.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: Uh, we don't want to talk about them.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: I hear about them too much over here in Baton Rouge.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: So uh moving on from Louisiana, that was our segment for uh the talking tech breakdown.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Shout out smaller sports.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: Let's have another good week, but let's go to baseball, man.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: Uh moving up to number nine in the nation according to D1 baseball.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: I think we should just you know kind of stick to D1 baseball's rankings and not go all over the place with all these other ones.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: Um, and we moved up, so shout out D1 baseball.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: Uh we we just got our eighth straight win, man.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: We're rolling.
- 11:22SPEAKER_04: Heck yeah.
- 11:22SPEAKER_04: I mean, like like we said in that first weekend skid, we said nobody freak out.
- 11:28SPEAKER_04: This is weekend number one.
- 11:29SPEAKER_04: Those were awesome teams.
- 11:30SPEAKER_04: We're an awesome team too, but we obviously just had a bit of learning to do, and we got it, we got home and are just pounding away.
- 11:38SPEAKER_04: So I'm really excited to see the shape that this baby baseball team has built themselves up into.
- 11:42SPEAKER_04: And I think we could still expect big things coming.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: We have gone three and oh this past week in the Shriner College Classic adminute made stadium in Houston where the cheating Astros play.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, we beat Texas State, Sam Houston State, and Texas AM Corpus in this little mini tournament.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, and the thing I think to highlight here, we beat Sam Houston State pretty good.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: I think we beat them like eight-nothing.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: And Sam Houston State ended up beating TCU in the same Houston State's a pretty decent baseball program, I think.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: They are, they're a very good baseball program.
- 12:14SPEAKER_04: So they actually uh they broke our uh our hearts one year, actually.
- 12:17SPEAKER_04: They're the ones that uh a couple years ago.
- 12:19SPEAKER_04: I can't remember the exact year, but they knocked us out of the playoffs for the Omaha.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we don't like to talk about that.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: And uh actually Kristen uh went to Sam Houston State for her undergrad, and I I remember that fondly because I was wearing my tech stuff being like, yeah, our baseball team's gonna wreck yours, like no, no chance, you know, and then they won.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: And then you know, they talk to us the whole time.
- 12:39SPEAKER_04: But and and I I I see you still have to take a dig at Houston Sports any chance you can.
- 12:43SPEAKER_04: I see.
- 12:44SPEAKER_02: Always, always.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: There's not a moment in time where I will I will if I if the if the opportunity presents itself, I'm going to make fun of Houston Sports.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: I apologize to all the Houston sports fans listening, but all your teams stink.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: So there you go.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: Um, also, by the way, with baseball, Jace Young named Big 12 player of the week.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: Patrick Monteverdi wins the Big 12 newcomer of the week.
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: So here we go.
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: Just continue on rolling with the young family.
- 13:12SPEAKER_04: Uh, keep on going, baby.
- 13:13SPEAKER_04: Let's skyrocket, man.
- 13:15SPEAKER_04: Tim Tadlock, take us to the promised land.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: Always.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: You know, Jace hitting the ball well.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: We're uh 1-8 straight, but you know, long season ahead.
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: If yeah, if this is an inside, this is a running inside joke between me and Tristan.
- 13:32SPEAKER_02: We always Tim Tadlock has this just all boy West Texas accent, and it's great.
- 13:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he's he's he has he's the living embodiment of Texas tech culture, like blown up.
- 13:45SPEAKER_04: You know, he's he's the full blown, he's like a walking West Texas stereotype in a in a good way.
- 13:51SPEAKER_04: I don't mean that as an insult, yeah.
- 13:53SPEAKER_04: So I love it, yeah.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: So to finish up on baseball, we got 12 straight games at home, uh, starting with a two-game series against Gonzaga and then a four-game series against Yukon.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: Uh the Yukon game, I believe the Gonzaga game is here on um, I think tomorrow and Wednesday.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: Um, but then the uh Yukon game is on March 12th through the 15th, so Friday through Monday.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: So uh got some uh out of state, uh out of state teams that we probably don't normally play.
- 14:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's always fun to seeing these mix up in the matchups.
- 14:23SPEAKER_04: So I'm excited to see us, you know, take on with what is hopefully maybe stronger competition, you know, it's kind of kind of build up the snowball a bit, you know, take take some punches out a little stronger teams, but uh just keep on strolling, man.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man, for sure.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: So all right, baseball's done.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: Let's go to the main topic.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: It is that time of year.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: We need to talk about the basketball team.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, let's go, let's start with kind of how tech ended.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: Um, we'll talk about the Iowa State and Baylor games, but tech finishes sixth in the Big 12 with a 17-9 overall record and nine and eight conference record.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: Um, I I I think that's a disappointment um from what we were talking about earlier, you know, talking about preseason, uh, how this team was gonna do.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, but you know, the Big 12 is a freaking hell of a conference, man, and it is a gauntlet, like we keep saying.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: And so uh finishing with an above 500 record uh with all these great teams, I mean, it's it I think it's a win.
- 15:22SPEAKER_04: So you you you think it's a disappointment.
- 15:25SPEAKER_04: Is are you just kind of voicing what you think the fans feel like, or is that Steven's answer?
- 15:29SPEAKER_04: What does Steven the basketball man think about the season?
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: It's like looking at it from what my expectations were, they're they finished worse than what I expected.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: But after watching this whole entire season how it unfolded, I'm not disappointed.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: I am just, you know, it it is what it is.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: You know, one of the teams was gonna be nine and eight, and and actually two of the teams finished nine and eight, and uh OU actually finished below us, and they're a great team.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, at six in the Big 12, not necessarily what you want to see, but it's also not as bad as it seems.
- 16:04SPEAKER_04: Right, right.
- 16:05SPEAKER_04: Uh, I it just it kind of stinks looking at that spot when we came into the season thinking that there was a chance that we can go, you know, maybe first, maybe second, third.
- 16:15SPEAKER_04: Um you just finish finishing bottom half just doesn't taste good no matter what.
- 16:22SPEAKER_04: And you I get it, you know, the gauntlet, the Big 12 is a total gauntlet, but I think also it's kind of kind of can bum out the fan base a little bit about that.
- 16:29SPEAKER_04: Is you know, like last year wasn't that awesome either.
- 16:32SPEAKER_04: So we're hoping for a big bounce back, but obviously there's still a lot that can happen this year to be uh to kind of turn it around and to make us think that you know, wow, this team really was built for a march run rather than just running through the season, you know what I mean?
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: And I think a lot of people will agree that last year, if we kept going, if we played that Big 12 tournament and if we win to the NCAA tournament, we probably still would have gone pretty far with that team.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: So um I think this year's team is better than last year's team.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's just the record isn't really gonna show that.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, watching this team and how we're kind of rolling now, minus the Baylor game, uh, you know, I I think it's good going into the postseason.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: So we'll see how it goes.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: But uh Big 12 awards were announced just a few hours ago.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: Uh Mac McClung wins the newcomer of the year award for the Big 12.
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: That is the first time a tech player has ever won that award, which is really cool to see.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, Mac came in and and made an immediate impact right away.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, he keeps defying odds and keeps proving people wrong.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: And uh it's just it's just awesome for him.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: The mackerel.
- 17:35SPEAKER_04: He comes just swimming and flopping around on the Texas Tech court.
- 17:39SPEAKER_04: Uh, so I it sounds like you really enjoyed adding him to the team.
- 17:43SPEAKER_04: Uh so I guess a big question around the mackerel.
- 17:45SPEAKER_04: Congrats on that awesome award is what happens next for him?
- 17:48SPEAKER_04: Does he hang around for another year?
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: I think I think he's gone after this year.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: Uh, we'll see how things work out in the tournament.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: You never know when it, I mean, he's only a junior, so he's got a year, I think a year or two left of eligibility.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: Um, but um, yeah, it's it's just gonna depend.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: If say we go out in the tournament in a in a bad way and he feels like he needs to come back and finish the job or something like that.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: I can see that.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: But from before he even went to Texas Tech, he went through the NBA draft process.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: So we know that's his goal, we know that's his end game here.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: So um I I I think uh the more the more interesting guy to talk about is Terrence Shannon.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: I think he's getting some first round, second, like early second round love in in some of these NBA mock drafts.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: So I think he's for sure gonna be gone.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: Um, Mac, I think is kind of a wild card right now.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: Uh, so we'll see.
- 18:37SPEAKER_04: Well, either way, it's really exciting to talk about Texas Tech players uh in their draft stock.
- 18:41SPEAKER_04: It's just something that we're new to as fans.
- 18:44SPEAKER_04: Um uh as a fan, what do you want to see?
- 18:48SPEAKER_04: Do you want to see these players come back, or would you rather see them maybe uh become stars in the NBA?
- 18:54SPEAKER_04: Well, what do you want to see?
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: I think we got a couple we we have a bright future with some of these guys that are on the bench, uh you know, guys like Micah PV, who's only going to improve from here on out.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, Agbo and uh Nadolmy and all those guys.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: I I have full faith in those guys.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: Uh I think Kyler will be back for his senior year next year.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: And then we have an awesome freshman coming in and Jalen Tyson.
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, I I want these guys to succeed just like every other fan does.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: And uh I if you're getting first round grades, uh you better go.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: So uh Mac, I think could be uh a really awesome returner and and potentially be you know uh a candidate for a Naismith player of the year if he comes back next year.
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: Um, but we'll see, man.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: We'll see.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: I I just wish success for both of those guys.
- 19:37SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 19:37SPEAKER_04: And like you said before we really got into this conversation that Mac came here to uh maybe restree try his draft his draft stock.
- 19:44SPEAKER_04: So yeah, uh maybe he's thinking this was all or nothing this year.
- 19:47SPEAKER_04: So um we'll see once again, really exciting.
- 19:50SPEAKER_04: So I'm sure you have more people to talk about though with this to work.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, no doubt.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: Well, continuing with Mac, he also got second team all Big 12, which was the highest of any of our players.
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: Uh Terrence Shannon got third team all Big 12.
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: A little weird that he didn't get the uh sixth man of the year, uh, considering he was probably the best best play bench player in college basketball, uh maybe in college basketball.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: Um came off the bench and he was our second leading scorer.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: He was awesome all year.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: Uh, but besides the point, Kyler Edwards and Kevin McCullough also got honorable mentions.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: So uh this is the second straight year.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: We haven't had a player make the all Big 12 first team.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: Uh Jared Culver did in 2019, and we haven't we didn't have any last year, we don't have any this year.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, I I think we just didn't have that guy that really just went over the top and and you know, I some would argue Mac, but I think the I think the voting did did pretty good.
- 20:38SPEAKER_04: Two points there.
- 20:39SPEAKER_04: You left off the part that Jared Culver got Big 12 player of the year that year.
- 20:44SPEAKER_04: That is um and and second point, do you think Chris Beard teams are built to kind of put that player into that echelon?
- 20:52SPEAKER_04: Or do you think perhaps his his his uh format as a coach just doesn't really lend to that?
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: I think, yeah, I think his coaching style doesn't lead to one guy really just taking over and being you know a uh player of the year candidate.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: So what that just makes what Jared Culver did in 2019 that much more impressive.
- 21:11SPEAKER_04: But Jared Culver is just the ultimate catalyst of everything you would have ever wanted in a Texas Tech basketball prover player.
- 21:18SPEAKER_04: Not to cut you off, just just whenever we're bragging about that.
- 21:21SPEAKER_04: So just for sure.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: I mean, that team was special, man.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: That and we'll go back on it forever for the rest of our because seeing that team seeing how everybody just flowed and came together as a team while having all that talent.
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, Tariq Owens and Matt Mooney are playing in G League right now, Moretti's overseas doing awesome.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: Odiace is also overseas playing.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: Jared Culver, obviously number six pick in the draft, playing with the Timberwolves right now, coming off a couple injuries.
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: So he hasn't really had uh the start to his NBA career that he wanted, but he's still a fantastic player.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: He'll make it.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: Uh, I just think he's gonna get off the Timberwolves.
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: Uh just a terrible, terrible organization, terrible program.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Over there.
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, man, I I just I to your fur to your point earlier, I just I just don't think that a lot of Texas Tech players are gonna be player of the year unless we get that one guy who just goes, you know, nuts like Jared Colver and was a true leader like he was that year.
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: But uh, you know, we'll see, we'll see.
- 22:19SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 22:20SPEAKER_04: Um, so who who did win the Big 12 player of the year then?
- 22:23SPEAKER_04: Cade Cunningham from Odyssey.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, I think it was between him and Jared Butler, but I think COVID, the little COVID break that Baylor took, just kind of pushed Butler out of it.
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: And you know, Cade Cunningham had he had the uh narrative too, and that's a big part of uh of these kind of voting, you know, player of the year things.
- 22:41SPEAKER_02: It's it's big time narrative, and you know, he's gonna be the number one pick, and he had that 40-point game towards the end of the year, so of course, kind of like a Zion Williams, uh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: Exactly like the Zion Williamson sort of thing.
- 22:54SPEAKER_02: So uh yeah, and he deserved it.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm not saying I I probably would have if I had a vote, which I never will, but if I had a vote, I would vote Jared Butler.
- 23:02SPEAKER_04: But you know, Cade Cunningham is more than deserving of it for sure, and uh, reluctant props to uh the Oklahoma State Cowboys this year.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: They stole all of our stuff, indeed.
- 23:12SPEAKER_04: Xerox you.
- 23:13SPEAKER_04: That's why I said reluctant props.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: Trash.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: But let's move on.
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: Latest bracketology puts tech at a five seed, uh, so we don't move up or move down after killing Iowa State and getting beat down pretty good by Baylor.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, I I think really we're gonna stay at a five seed, even if we lose this game against UT.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: Um, I think if anything, we'll move up to potentially a four seed if we can even win this tournament or uh you know go win a couple games in it.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: So um the thing is with this Big 12 tournament, so we're a six seed.
- 23:46SPEAKER_02: We are gonna play Texas, who is the three seed.
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: Uh that is 8 30 p.m.
- 23:50SPEAKER_02: on either main ESPN or ESPN two.
- 23:52SPEAKER_02: We don't really know yet.
- 23:54SPEAKER_02: But if we beat Texas, which we have twice this season, it is very hard to win three in a row in one season against a team.
- 24:01SPEAKER_02: Those odds are not great, but um, you know, we seem to add Texas's number.
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: The winner of that game will play the winner of Kansas and probably Oklahoma.
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: Oklahoma plays Iowa State in the first round, so they're probably gonna win.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: Uh Iowa State's terrible.
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: So they're the winner of Texas Tech and Texas will play the winner of Kansas and Oklahoma, most likely.
- 24:22SPEAKER_02: Um, and then the winner of that will go on to probably play Baylor or West Virginia on the other side of the bracket.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: So I'm cool, I'm happy that we didn't get West Virginia or Baylor on our side of the bracket early because those teams seem to have our numbers.
- 24:35SPEAKER_02: Kansas also played very well against us, but I I think of those three, I'd rather play Kansas.
- 24:39SPEAKER_04: For sure, but it's still a tough running, like against all three of those teams, without question.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: You gotta beat you gotta beat two or three really good teams.
- 24:49SPEAKER_04: And let's let's talk about um our our UT game.
- 24:52SPEAKER_04: Talk about deja vu, you know, the the COVID outbreak and in particular how it relates to sports kind of happened in our game, like sports wide, like universally, not just college, but like whenever they pulled us right off the carp court before the game started, that was like the start of all COVID versus sports, yeah.
- 25:14SPEAKER_04: So kind of a strange moment going on in their Kansas City.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man.
- 25:19SPEAKER_02: I think it was March 11th or 13th last year, sometime.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: Whenever Rudy Gobert from the Jazz got COVID and was like the first like major athlete to get it, that was when everything just took a turn and they started canceling everything.
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: And and I think we were a day or two after he tested positive, and so you know, the NCAA was going insane.
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: We were wondering if we were gonna have some weird tournament with no fans, whether we were gonna even, you know, have a tournament at all.
- 25:45SPEAKER_02: We ended up not, obviously.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: So uh, but yeah, it is it is weird because we were gonna play Texas in that game last year at this time.
- 25:51SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, uh just just a weird turn of events, man.
- 25:55SPEAKER_04: This whole past year has been weird, a weird moment, but maybe kind of like uh symbolic, you know, like that here we are doing a rematch because uh we're we're at the light at the end of the tunnel, it appears.
- 26:05SPEAKER_04: You know, things are getting uh we got to play a whole season of basketball nearly.
- 26:09SPEAKER_04: Um, so it's it's it's gonna be cool to see us finally get the best time of year with sports, man.
- 26:15SPEAKER_04: So it's March.
- 26:16SPEAKER_04: It's it's time to to get hyped as heck for everybody watching.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: And instead of things trending downward, things are trending upward in terms of COVID this year.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, we're gonna have an NCA tournament, we're gonna have the Pig 12 tournament.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: I'm just super excited to actually be able to play and watch tech in this stuff.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: So everybody should, all fans should just be happy.
- 26:36SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 26:37SPEAKER_04: No matter if your team's in the March Madness or not, this is the best time of year.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: But I have to bring your mood down a little bit because I'll do that.
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: I know, but I have to mention it because it's pretty relevant.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech hasn't been historically bad in this Big 12 tournament.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: Uh, we have first off, we've never won it.
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: Second off, we are 14 and 23 all time in this tournament.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: Um, and the last five years been disappointing.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: It has trended upward, I will say.
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: This shows, I'm gonna name off the last five tournaments and how we've gotten better uh in each tournament as we've gone through.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: But 2015, 16, and 17, we all lost in round one, two of those against 10 seeds, which weren't great.
- 27:15SPEAKER_02: Um, 2018 lost in the third round, so the game before the championship to number three seed West Virginia, and then we lost in the second round in 2019.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: Of all that was weird because that was, I mean, that was a team that made the final four.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, we lost in the semifinals against 10 seed West Virginia.
- 27:34SPEAKER_02: So the last seed in the conference we lost in this tournament.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: So I don't know if there's just some weird juju going on or whatever, but uh we have not done well.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: So hopefully we change that narrative, man.
- 27:45SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 27:45SPEAKER_04: If if anything, then maybe like you were talking about earlier, maybe to boost our our uh March Madness stock.
- 27:51SPEAKER_02: So yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:52SPEAKER_04: Because obviously it's gonna be really tough to get past some of these teams that are just waiting to grab the trophy like Ba Baylor or West Virginia.
- 28:00SPEAKER_04: Um, I'm not saying that this team can't do that, but it's it's it's a obviously the we have weird juju going up against us here, and uh it it's just you know it's it's it's just a tough sledding right now.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: And the big tall tournament's always tough, it's in a different place, what you know, yada yada yada, we can go on about it, but um, yeah, the good news, I think, and and I've already said this, the good news is even if we lose to UT, I don't think our seeding in the tournament goes down at all.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: I think we kind of stick in that five range.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: We may only go up.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: I think we can only go up.
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: We may fall to a six seed.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, none of these, even the Lenardi bracket isn't perfect, so uh we don't really know uh how how we're gonna be seeded, whether it's five or six or nine.
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: I don't think we'll get up to four unless we win a few games in this in this tournament.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: So um, but we'll see how it all plays out, man.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: It all starts with UT on Thursday.
- 28:54SPEAKER_04: Let's get a three-o against the horns, man.
- 28:56SPEAKER_04: That would be sick.
- 28:57SPEAKER_04: That would be sick.
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, go and beat, go and beat the horns and then beat one of Kansas or OU and then potentially a West Virginia or a Baylor in the championship.
- 29:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, that would just be sweet, but for sure.
- 29:08SPEAKER_04: And I know we haven't gotten the trophy in this tournament, but it's not even close to a regular season trophy.
- 29:13SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 29:14SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, no doubt.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: The regular season trophy matters no matter what the the cyclone fans say.
- 29:18SPEAKER_04: This is kind of just a bonus, it's kind of like extra points at the end of it, you know.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: It is, and it gives a shot to the teams that have no chance of making this tournament.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: So, hey, watch, you know, watch TCU go and win the thing.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
- 29:30SPEAKER_04: And then put eight freaking Big 12 teams in the tournament.
- 29:33SPEAKER_04: God, that would be ridiculous.
- 29:35SPEAKER_04: That'd be insanity.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: By the way, all seven Big 12 tourney teams that are projected to make the tournament are uh ranked in the top 25.
- 29:43SPEAKER_04: So that's insane.
- 29:45SPEAKER_04: This this conference is unbelievable in basketball.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: 70% of this conference is ranked in the top 25 right now.
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: That's stupid.
- 29:54SPEAKER_04: I know I know there's there's there's a lot of love towards the conference in basketball, but I mean overall this this conference is rock solid in football and baseball as well.
- 30:01SPEAKER_04: So I don't know.
- 30:02SPEAKER_04: I I get so tired of the Big 12-8 uh overall.
- 30:05SPEAKER_02: So yeah, no doubt.
- 30:07SPEAKER_04: This conference is in really good health and people don't really realize it.
- 30:10SPEAKER_02: For sure, for sure.
- 30:10SPEAKER_02: I agree with you.
- 30:11SPEAKER_02: I think I think the Big 12 gets a ton of hate, especially in football.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: Uh, basketball, we're pretty well regarded.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: I mean for sure.
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: A lot of people, you know, some people are big East guys, some people are ACC or Big Ten or whatever, but uh, you know, we're always in the conversation of having some of the best teams.
- 30:26SPEAKER_02: So absolutely you know, basketball doesn't have an issue.
- 30:29SPEAKER_02: Football, we got to change that.
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: Um, but that's besides the point.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: Let's talk about Iowa State and and Baylor uh here because Iowa State we win in Lubbock uh earlier in the week 81 to 54.
- 30:41SPEAKER_02: So uh our our podcast curse did uh did not work, which is good.
- 30:46SPEAKER_02: We said we recorded before the Iowa State game, knowing it was gonna come out after the Iowa State game, and we just expected it to be a win.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: So I was I was sweating a little in that first half when we didn't start off great, but uh we we dominated that second half.
- 31:00SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 31:01SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm so glad what was supposed to happen happened, you know.
- 31:05SPEAKER_04: With the way this season has gone, you know, it's it's been kind of sweaty when it really shouldn't have to be, you know.
- 31:12SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I'm glad that Travis's, you know, this would be the worst loss in Texas Tech history, didn't come to some cursed reality.
- 31:22SPEAKER_04: Thank God.
- 31:23SPEAKER_04: Thank God.
- 31:24SPEAKER_04: Um, but I'm glad our boys did what they were supposed to do.
- 31:27SPEAKER_04: Iowa State's so bad.
- 31:29SPEAKER_04: There would have been zero excuse.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if they don't fire their coach, I don't know.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: I the Iowa State fans are gonna riot.
- 31:35SPEAKER_02: But uh in this game, five players scoring in double figures.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: Uh, a strong Santos Silva game.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: He was six of eight from the field, 14 and 7 on the game.
- 31:45SPEAKER_02: Uh another good rebounding day for him.
- 31:47SPEAKER_02: Uh the Kyler Edwards hot shooting continues.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: He was, I think, four of five in this game, three of three from downtown.
- 31:53SPEAKER_02: Uh, but the real story of this game was the Ty Larson charge.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: The student manager gets in the game, it was all over Sports Center, it's all over ESPN.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, the man has been here, I think, four or five years, and uh he just uh you know, Chris Beard got him approved to put on a jersey and actually be eligible for the game earlier in that day.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, and he comes in and of all the Texas Tech things, he goes and takes a charge in that minute that he's in, and uh the crowd goes nuts.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: It was awesome, dude.
- 32:22SPEAKER_04: This I love seeing weird, wacky stuff happen like that.
- 32:26SPEAKER_04: It's it's hilarious.
- 32:27SPEAKER_04: It just it's extra great because Chris Beard's such a meme coach, you know.
- 32:32SPEAKER_04: So he just builds on his legend.
- 32:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he does.
- 32:36SPEAKER_02: He does.
- 32:36SPEAKER_02: So shout out Ty Larson.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: Uh put his name, put his jersey up in the rafters.
- 32:41SPEAKER_04: Retire the number, retire number 30.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: But um, okay, let's go to Baylor.
- 32:48SPEAKER_02: Baylor was tough.
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, lose in Waco 8873.
- 32:53SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, this was a back and forth for the first half, and then the second half, Baylor just shot the lights out of the building.
- 33:02SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, tech Twitter was cancerous after, like always, uh, with this game.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: Uh a lot of people uh, you know, associated this loss with luck that uh Baylor just you know shot unbelievable and uh they you know they're not gonna shoot like this all the time, which is true to some point, you know, but uh just just blaming it on luck is is lame in my opinion.
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: Um Baylor shot the crap out of the ball, but a lot of those shots were lightly contested to uncontested.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, I I think tech as a team uh did not play great defense.
- 33:37SPEAKER_02: Uh they they had a stretch there in the in the first half, the kind of the latter end of the first half where we played great defense, got some turnovers, uh, got some easy buckets from those turnovers.
- 33:48SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, I I think this is more about tech playing bad defense than Baylor shooting unbelievable, you know.
- 33:54SPEAKER_04: I mean, people contributing it to luck.
- 33:56SPEAKER_04: We've had issues at the perimeter defense-wise, all season.
- 34:00SPEAKER_04: All season.
- 34:00SPEAKER_04: Every everyone has been shooting a pretty dang good game at the three all season against us.
- 34:05SPEAKER_04: I've been complaining about this every single game, I feel like, is geez, every three goes in against us, and obviously a lot of that has to do with defense.
- 34:12SPEAKER_04: And you know, yeah, like you said, I don't think you could ever put like a loss like that on luck.
- 34:16SPEAKER_04: They they pounded us.
- 34:18SPEAKER_04: You don't lose a lucky win, it's like a very close one, you know.
- 34:23SPEAKER_04: Like they had a lucky call go their way or like a lucky tip, like a lucky bounce.
- 34:27SPEAKER_04: You know, those happen, I get it, but with a score like that, no way.
- 34:31SPEAKER_02: This is the classic situation where multiple things can be true.
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: Like, yes, Baylor probably they shot above what they normally shoot, even for being a great three-point shooting team, but shooting 63% from three as a team is unacceptable in every way, shape, and form.
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: Uh, letting a guy make 10 three-pointer, one single player, Massio Teague, make 10 three-pointers, go 10 of 12 shooting from three-point range.
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: Uh, a lot of those came in the second half, too, where you know he's shooting well.
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: He was like five of five at halftime.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: Maybe get on the guy, maybe.
- 35:08SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, he had like two or three wide open threes in that second half, and it's like, okay, so we're just we're just not gonna change the game plan at all.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: So that was disappointing.
- 35:17SPEAKER_02: Uh Davion Mitchell also went three for three from downtown, and Jared Butler went two of four.
- 35:22SPEAKER_02: So, you know, they're three main three-point shooters, they're three guards and forwards.
- 35:25SPEAKER_02: Uh, we just let them beat us from downtown.
- 35:27SPEAKER_02: And uh at that point, you got to change up your defense a little bit.
- 35:30SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: It's you can't there's there's too many good shooters this day and age, like with the you know, emergence of the three-point line in the sport of basketball in the last you know five to ten years, you really have to guard that guard that spot and focus on that spot first.
- 35:49SPEAKER_02: Um with a lot of these teams.
- 35:51SPEAKER_02: You know, the two games against West Virginia, they shot lights out from three, two.
- 35:55SPEAKER_02: So um I'm I'm worried that we're playing the top dogs in this conference not very well.
- 36:00SPEAKER_02: Uh what both West Virginia and Baylor are great three-point shooting teams, and we need to recognize that and guard the perimeter more heavily and stop over, you know, overreaching and and all this kind of stuff to leave these guys open.
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: Um uh and maybe play a little man defense.
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: I would have liked to see that this game.
- 36:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, I know we play kind of a switch man zone hybrid sometimes.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: So uh it would have been nice just to go straight up man and just trust your dudes to to make them make tough shots on the inside and force them off the perimeter.
- 36:30SPEAKER_02: But you you know, it it comes and goes.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: These guys shot lights out, and it's just a game you move on from.
- 36:35SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 36:36SPEAKER_04: I think I think you nailed it.
- 36:37SPEAKER_04: And something kind of off topic towards that is it kind of hurt to be that team, you know, it was senior night for them, and they got everybody in the score on us.
- 36:44SPEAKER_04: And it's like guy, I it just kind of like we're way too good for that to happen.
- 36:48SPEAKER_04: It kind of feels like I don't know if maybe that's just uh a salty rant that I just did, but and I mean a rant, but it's just it really I was kind of my blood was boiling a bit watching them throw all of their bench warmers in to get a get some points on us, a ranked team, a good team with a lot of hype around us, just because they're winning by that much, and it was our senior night.
- 37:09SPEAKER_04: And I was just like, gosh, that feels like that should not be happening.
- 37:12SPEAKER_04: I don't know why that that really stuck with me after the game.
- 37:14SPEAKER_04: I was like, I was really pissed off.
- 37:16SPEAKER_02: You hate to be the team that that happens to.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: Um, it like I don't, you know, my mindset hasn't changed on the team because we got blown out by the number two team in the nation, uh, that has only lost one game this year.
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: But uh to get out hustled too.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: I mean, it wasn't just the three-point shooting that mattered, it was the hustle.
- 37:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, and and shout out to Mark Vital because and and I'm so happy that dude is not gonna be playing against us ever again uh beside after this year.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: Uh him and Messi OT are both done after this year, which is fantastic news.
- 37:48SPEAKER_02: Um, but uh that dude hustles his freaking butt off.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: I mean, he's one of the he's one of my favorite players that doesn't play for tech in college basketball.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: And I hate Baylor does not deserve him because this dude is one of my one of the best guys that you want on your team.
- 38:03SPEAKER_02: He hustles after everything, he grits and grinds and grabs rebounds.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: He's like six foot five, so he's undersized for a big guy, but he just out muscles you and he knows he's smart, he knows where to be on the floor at all times.
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: And there was like three or four 50-50 balls where it just came down to him, uh, just being who he is and and out hustling our entire team.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: And so uh Baylor deserved that game in every way.
- 38:25SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, we had a lot of guys that didn't play great offensively.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: Kevin McCullough and and San Osilva really had poor games um offensive on the offensive side.
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: Uh Kyler had a great first half, uh, kept us into the game and brought us back after Baylor started 16 to 3, uh leading.
- 38:42SPEAKER_02: Uh Kyler Edwards just brought us back.
- 38:44SPEAKER_02: And um uh, you know, it second half was tough to watch, but uh I don't think it's really anything to worry about in the grand scheme.
- 38:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, not how you want to end a see a regular season at all, but it you know, the the important stuff is coming up, you know.
- 38:58SPEAKER_04: It's I like the way we responded after our last losing skid, you know, but and after this last loss, I feel like we can bounce back, especially go up and go up against UT.
- 39:07SPEAKER_04: It's a good good projection on how we're feeling after that loss for sure.
- 39:11SPEAKER_04: Yep, yeah.
- 39:12SPEAKER_04: So um, hey, it's Baylor's awesome, and it sucks that we have to say that about Baylor.
- 39:18SPEAKER_04: Uh, and I really do hope they'll go out in the first round in March Madness.
- 39:21SPEAKER_04: But um, I it it kind of sucks to see us kind of crumble against really great teams because if we want something to happen here in a few weeks, you're gonna be playing really great teams, yeah.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: So especially when you're coming to Sweet 16 Elite Eight level.
- 39:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, all those teams are gonna be good.
- 39:36SPEAKER_04: So absolutely it kind of double hurts because you already saw that team you got crushed by before, and then you go and get annihilated.
- 39:43SPEAKER_04: I mean, it just yeah, we played better the first time, you know.
- 39:46SPEAKER_02: It's a yeah, that's a tough pill to swallow is you played them better the first time, and yeah, second time, you know, they just made the adjustments and and stopped them.
- 39:54SPEAKER_02: But uh I guess we didn't.
- 39:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and and the last thing I'll say about this game is is Baylor really they run they won the rebounding battle.
- 40:01SPEAKER_02: They uh they won it 40 to 27, so a 13 uh rebounding advantage for Baylor.
- 40:07SPEAKER_02: Uh that's unacceptable.
- 40:08SPEAKER_02: You can't have that.
- 40:09SPEAKER_02: A lot of that's effort, a lot of that is Mark Vital or you know, somebody not boxing out somebody, somebody missing an assignment uh to where Baylor got some second chance opportunities.
- 40:18SPEAKER_02: Uh and the thing is Baylor caused only seven tech turnovers, and we caused uh 12 Baylor turnovers, but we but they scored 15 points off of our seven turnovers, and we only scored 13 points off of their 12 turnovers.
- 40:35SPEAKER_02: So that's something we need to work on.
- 40:37SPEAKER_02: Taking advantage of those opportunities when you have them.
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: Uh that's a lot of fast breaks.
- 40:41SPEAKER_02: That's just you know, uh us just have to be better and take advantage of our opportunities where you play great defense and you don't execute on the offensive end.
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: That's something you got to work on.
- 40:49SPEAKER_04: So fast breaks have been an issue all season.
- 40:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:52SPEAKER_02: And and Baylor just but Baylor's a really good team, so you know, not much more we can say.
- 40:57SPEAKER_04: Let's put it to bed, never think about it again.
- 41:00SPEAKER_02: Let's do it, let's move on.
- 41:01SPEAKER_02: Big 12 tournament against Texas.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: Let's go and beat the Longhorns uh three and oh.
- 41:05SPEAKER_02: That would be sick.
- 41:06SPEAKER_04: That'd be awesome.
- 41:07SPEAKER_04: Horns down.
- 41:07SPEAKER_04: I guess there's really no preview you can do at this point after we've done twice, right?
- 41:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're they're a big, I mean, they're a big team.
- 41:14SPEAKER_02: We got Marcus.
- 41:15SPEAKER_02: Marcus is gonna have to have another good rebounding game.
- 41:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, Kevin McCullough.
- 41:19SPEAKER_02: We're all gonna have to work on the glass, you know, guys like Mac and and Edwards and McCullough and uh, you know, Shannon, all the all everybody gonna have to be working at the rack uh to stop Jericho Sims and Greg Brown and all those guys.
- 41:30SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 41:30SPEAKER_04: Let's trigger the hell out of the uh Texas fans because losing the tech, they hate that shit so much.
- 41:35SPEAKER_02: And to go 0-3.
- 41:37SPEAKER_02: Oh, that would be a good thing.
- 41:38SPEAKER_04: Why have we hired Chris Beard yet?
- 41:42SPEAKER_04: Okay, all right.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: It's the it's it's become an annual holiday of this is the time Texas fans turn on Shaka.
- 41:49SPEAKER_02: And then they turn around and then they look at how big his buyout is, and they're like, uh I guess we gotta give him again, and then you have the same disappointing year.
- 41:58SPEAKER_02: So, but they finished in three C they didn't have a disappointing year by the other.
- 42:02SPEAKER_04: I mean, yeah, I just hate losing to us.
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they do, they do.
- 42:06SPEAKER_02: So uh shout out, Texas fans, for being ass.
- 42:12SPEAKER_02: But I have nothing else.
- 42:14SPEAKER_02: I have a couple shout-outs.
- 42:15SPEAKER_02: Did you have anything?
- 42:16SPEAKER_04: Uh no, dude.
- 42:17SPEAKER_04: I I'm good for the week.
- 42:18SPEAKER_02: Okay, right on.
- 42:19SPEAKER_02: Well, my shout-outs, I'm gonna start with uh the Cowboys paying Dak Prescott.
- 42:23SPEAKER_02: They did it, they finally did it after two, three, four years, whatever, however long this whole saga has been.
- 42:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, Dak gets a four-year 160 million dollar deal with a record 126 million guaranteed.
- 42:38SPEAKER_02: So the Cowboys finally caved, they gave him the biggest guaranteed money in NFL history.
- 42:43SPEAKER_02: So uh I you know, a shout out Dak Prescott.
- 42:46SPEAKER_04: Do you think that's like do you think that was a a team move or a fan move?
- 42:51SPEAKER_02: I don't know, man.
- 42:52SPEAKER_02: At this point, the saga was so long.
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: Like, I think I think Dak was really just going for his guaranteed money, and um I I could talk about how the Cowboys have messed up with their past signings a ton.
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: Uh, but you know, Dak the way he was playing before his injury, he was unbelievable.
- 43:10SPEAKER_02: He was throwing, you know, insane amount of yards and insane touchdowns.
- 43:15SPEAKER_02: He looked great.
- 43:16SPEAKER_02: Uh, but coming back from an injury like that, you never really know how they're gonna respond.
- 43:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, some guys have looked awesome, like Paul George had that horrible, you know, leg injury, and he came back and he's been you know all-star level.
- 43:28SPEAKER_02: He was just named an all-star.
- 43:30SPEAKER_02: So um uh and and you know, other guys have made recoveries, you know, pretty awesome recoveries from stuff like that.
- 43:36SPEAKER_02: So it's just kind of a wait and see thing.
- 43:38SPEAKER_02: I think you know, they they would have really had to gone after somebody different, they couldn't have gone the rookie route because Zeke and Amari Cooper and those guys just aren't getting you know any younger.
- 43:48SPEAKER_02: So uh there was there was talk about Russell Wilson.
- 43:51SPEAKER_02: I know he put the the Cowboys as like one of his four teams or whatever.
- 43:55SPEAKER_02: I didn't think that was gonna happen.
- 43:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, so I think they just kind of caved and said, you know what, we'll just roll.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: the dice with Dak the next four years and just go with it.
- 44:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 44:03SPEAKER_04: I I I think it was this was kind of gonna happen no matter what.
- 44:07SPEAKER_04: I really didn't see the the Cowboys going anyway but Dak honestly.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: I don't know man.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: The Cowboys are pretty stupid.
- 44:13SPEAKER_02: So I could I could have seen them just you know cutting Dak and just going Andy Dalton full time.
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: But really it's just like the fan pressure seemed immense.
- 44:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah so it was it was stupid especially with how good Dak was playing and then he got the the sympathy thing with his injury so um yeah I think Jerry finally caved um and and just said hey we're gonna pay the guy so shout out Dak Prescott uh cool cool that he's gonna stay in Texas he's a good he's a great quarterback so yeah now's talking cowboys that was talking cowboys here on talking tech so one one more shout out uh rest in peace to uh uh dub malays and I apologize if I butchered that name uh ages he died at the age of 76 he was a uh former Texas Tech or he was a ring of honor member at Texas Tech former basketball player from 1963 to six nineteen sixty six uh passed away at the age of 76.
